Stray Kids, Case 143: the English lyrics & the meaning

what is case 143 mean

Case 143 is the single extracted from the mini-album Maxident , released by the South-Korean band Stray Kids in October 2022. The song became immediately viral because of the peculiar music video. The lyrics could require a little explanation because it’s not always clear what case 143 is. In this article, we will explore the English translation of the lines and explain their meaning. You will also find the complete English lyrics at the end.

You can find the official video of Case 143 below.

Stray Kids "CASE 143" M/V

Case 143 : the English lyrics and their meaning

Case 143 is a song about being in love . The peculiarity of its lyrics is that love is presented as a case submitted to the object of their love, and that matches the scenes of the music video, where police deal with an investigation on a case.

Why precisely Case 143? It’s a code that refers to the words “I Love You,” counting the number of letters on each word: I (1), Love (4), You (3). There are two lines in the song confirming this:

I wanna send my code to you Eight letters is all it takes

The code is the eight letters composing the sentence “I love you.” Stray Kids are making an official request to the person they love, like submitting a case, formally asking if they can be their boyfriend.

A new case, an unforgettable case I’m falling for your fatal attraction You, who keeps setting me on fire Are a question with an unknown source, homework that needs to be done Can I be your boyfriend? I’ve never faked my attitude towards you, no cap

On their side, they’ve always been open and sincere about their feelings. On the opposite side, it seems that the feelings are not returned naturally, and that’s why the singers are losing patience. That’s confirmed by the lyrics on another popular song of the album, Taste , where they mention “the dark and think thorns hidden on a rose.”

You got me losing patience The uncontrollable emotion You’re on my mind, I never feel alright

The way Stray Kids describe it, love is a force that cannot be tamed, and it drags them toward the person they love. It’s unavoidable. Stray Kids wonder why they feel this way and why, from time to time, they have doubts, but ultimately they cannot resist this feeling.

Why do I keep getting attracted? I’m drawn to you like a magnet (Oh) I cannot explain this reaction The only thing I can say is one-four-three

Can I be your boyfriend? I’ve never faked my attitude towards you, no cap It’s full of stuff I want to tell you, my case There are no words that describe the perfection

That’s the real meaning of the lyrics inside Case 143 : I’m in love with you, totally dragged by this feeling. I officially submit my request to be your boyfriend and demand a formal case about it . I cannot explain why you so much attract me, but after all, it doesn’t matter. I want to be your boyfriend.

The original lyrics are in Korean, but the English translation of the lyrics is available on Genius . You can find it below.

A new case, an unforgettable case I’m falling for your fatal attraction You, who keeps setting me on fire Are a question with an unknown source, homework that needs to be done Can I be your boyfriend? You got me losing patience The uncontrollable emotion You’re on my mind, I never feel alright Numerous emotions collide, what’s going on Rolling in the deep inside my head You got me bad Letting my guard down Swiftly moving towards you, on my way (Oh)

Why do I keep getting attracted? I’m drawn to you like a magnet (Oh) I cannot explain this reaction The only thing I can say is one-four-three Why do I keep getting attracted? Only you’re on my mind (Oh) I cannot explain this emotion One-four-three, I love you

A-B-C-D-E-F-G I wanna send my code to you Eight letters is all it takes And I’m gonna let you know, oh Stacked high for everyone except you, my barricade (Barricade) You can call me anything, code name (Call me, baby) Even if I’m greedy, I want to be your soulmate (Woo) My feelings are growing, upgrade ’cause

Heartbeat, all my Conditions are in crisis (Crisis) The way you look ain’t no false My inner feelings again repeat (Repeat)

Walking next to you but I’m falling I’m falling deeper, I’m drawn to you You’re pulling me deeper and deeper I try to get out but I can’t stop Can I be the one? Yeah, I’ll be the one I recklessly dare to use cringy expressions My head is numb, cut away the emotionless thoughts Moving, I’m on my way

Why do I keep getting attracted Only you’re on my mind (Oh) I cannot explain this emotion One-four-three, I love you Why do I keep getting attracted? I’m drawn to you like a magnet (Oh) I cannot explain this reaction (The only thing I can say is)

I’m gonna let you know (Know) That I’m just gonna go (Go) And hold you so I’m never letting go I’m gonna let you know (Know) That I’m just gonna go (Just go) Yeah, I’m heading towards you right now, like I’m

Never letting go, oh I cannot explain this emotion One-four-three, I love you

Case 143 by Stray Kids

what is case 143 mean

Songfacts®:

  • Stray Kids is an eight-member South Korean boy band comprising Bang Chan, Lee Know, Changbin, Hyunjin, Han, Felix, Seungmin, and I.N. JYP Entertainment formed them through the 2017 reality show of the same name. "Case 143" is the lead single from their mini-album Maxident .
  • "Case 143" is a pop and electro-hop track where Stray Kids are smitten with a girl. Sung and rapped in a mixture of South Korean and English, the boys cannot explain why they can't resist their feelings. The Stray Kids liken their confusion about their emotions to an unresolved case – case 143.
  • Why case 143? It's a numeric code based on how many letters there are in each word of "I Love You": I (1), Love (4), You (3). The term "143" for "I love you" was popularized back in the late 1980s and early 1990s when pagers were widely used. Because the devices had limited space for messages and not all supported text, couples used 143 to express their feelings for each other. Musiq Soulchild recorded a song about the love code titled "143" for his 2000 debut album Aijuswanaseing .
  • Stray Kids' Bang Chan, Changbin and Han wrote "Case 143" with the song's producers Raphael, Daviid and Yosia. "We deliver our messages very directly," said Changbin. "I think it's really fresh for us to express love for the first time. The lyrics are direct. They're really clear. I think the song's charm is that we don't beat around the bush in our expression of love."
  • Maxident topped the charts in South Korea and the United States. It marked Stray Kids' second record to reach #1 in the US as their mini-album Oddinary reached the summit in April.
  • Directed by 725 of SL8, the peculiar music video follows a police investigation into why the Stray Kids have transformed into fuzzy heart-shaped monsters. When the cops, who are also Stray Kids, examine the crime scene, they try to arrest both the troublemaking monsters and monster-inflected band members.

The Meaning Behind The Song: CASE 143 by Stray Kids

song-meanings

Introduction

As a Music Therapist, I have come across numerous songs that have touched the hearts of many individuals. One such song that has left a lasting impact on me is “CASE 143” by Stray Kids. I first heard this song on a rainy day, as I was browsing through a playlist curated by a friend. Little did I know, this song would captivate me from the very first note and stay with me ever since.

Table of Contents

The Uncontrollable Feeling of Attraction

The lyrics of “CASE 143,” penned by Stray Kids’ production team, 3RACHA, beautifully express the overwhelming and uncontrollable feeling of attraction towards someone. The members of Stray Kids convey their emotions through their signature dynamic electronic dance pop-style. They describe the allure and charm of an individual that leaves them spellbound, unable to forget the impact they have had on their lives.

The opening lines of the song paint a vivid picture of a memorable event and the magnetic pull that this person exerts on the members of Stray Kids. The lyrics urge the listener to be their boyfriend and assure them of the sincerity and honesty in their approach. The line, “완벽함 앞에 어떤 말로도 부족해” (Translation: “No words are enough in the face of perfection”), further emphasizes the depth of their attraction and admiration.

Using Numeric Code to Express Feelings

Instead of straightforwardly expressing their love, Stray Kids creatively incorporate a numeric code – “143.” This code, which originated in the 1990s when pagers were popular, represents the three words “I love you.” By using this code, the members of Stray Kids add depth and significance to their lyrics. It serves as a unique way to convey their affection without explicitly stating the words “I love you,” making the song more relatable to listeners who may struggle with expressing their emotions.

The Music Video and Mysterious Investigation

Accompanying the song is a visually captivating music video that follows a mysterious investigation. Stray Kids take on the roles of detectives determined to catch their doppelgängers, who transform into fluffy heart monsters. Fans have affectionately named the largest heart monster “Pipi.” The music video perfectly complements the theme of attraction and the search for answers, allowing viewers to immerse themselves in the storyline.

Personal Reflection and Therapeutic Impact

As a Music Therapist, I often witness the therapeutic impact of music on individuals. “CASE 143” by Stray Kids has touched the hearts of many, including myself, through its relatable lyrics and captivating melody. The song beautifully encapsulates the feeling of being deeply attracted to someone, yet struggling to find the right words to express that attraction. It serves as a reminder that emotions are complex and sometimes hard to put into words. The use of the numeric code adds depth and relatability to the song, allowing listeners to connect with their own experiences of attraction and love.

In my therapy sessions, I have used “CASE 143” as a tool to explore clients’ feelings and emotions towards someone they are attracted to. The lyrics provide a safe space for clients to express their desires, challenges, and insecurities surrounding romantic relationships. The song can act as a catalyst for deeper discussions about self-expression, communication, and vulnerability in relationships.

Stray Kids’ “CASE 143” is more than just a catchy song; it carries a meaningful message about attraction and the struggle to express emotions. With its relatable lyrics and dynamic sound, the song has resonated with fans around the world. As a Music Therapist, I have witnessed its therapeutic impact firsthand, using it as a tool to explore and discuss emotions in a safe and supportive environment. “CASE 143” is a testament to the power of music in connecting us to our deepest emotions and experiences.

what is case 143 mean

143  is based on the number of letters in each word of the phrase: I (1), love (4), you (3).

The shorthand, as the story goes, dates back to the early 1900s from Minot’s Ledge lighthouse off the coast of Cohasset, Massachusetts. The story begins in 1895, when the lighthouse changed its flash pattern after a recommendation that all lighthouses have numerical flash sequences. The order, one quick flash, four flashes, then three flashes, was apparently chosen at random.

In 1915, a new assistant lighthouse keeper, Winfield Scott Thompson, came to the Minot’s Ledge lighthouse. His family lived on a neighboring island and could see the flash of the lighthouse at night. According to legend, Mary Thompson, Winfield’s wife told their children that it was the I Love You  flash, their father’s way of telling them how much he loved them from across the water. Each flash corresponded to the number of letters in each word of the phrase: I love you . This tale proved popular, so much so that the Minot’s Ledge lighthouse is nicknamed the I Love You  lighthouse.

Who uses 143?

Thanks to developments in digital technology, 143 has largely dropped out of popular slang use, though some texters or internet users may drop a 143 for nostalgic or old-school charm.

Remember when 143 meant “I love you” and not “the age I felt just now when I told my 24-year-old coworker about pager message codes and she looked at me blankly”? — The Volatile Mermaid (@OhNoSheTwitnt) March 19, 2018

Still, it sees some life in hip-hop, soul, and R&B music. In 2000, R&B artist Musiq Soulchild released a song called “143” in which he sings to his would-be love: “There aren’t many more ways in words that I can say / so I’ll just say numerically / from my heart to you—143.”

In 2010, hip-hop artist Bobby Brackins recorded a song called “143” with a sexier take on the numbers: “143 I’ll make you yell it when we sexin’.”

143 sees some popularity in India, featured in pop music there as well as 2011 film called 143 – I Love You .

143 Meaning

What does 143 mean.

143 is a slang term used to express love, typically used in digital communications like text messages, chats, and social media posts. The number 143 represents the number of letters in each word of the phrase “ I love you .”

If someone sends you the number 143 in a message, it’s their way of expressing their love for you. A possible response could be to simply say “I love you too” or to send a heart emoji.

It’s important to note that while 143 is a widely recognized term, it’s not the only way to express love. There are many other ways to say “I love you” that are just as meaningful. Don’t be afraid to get creative and come up with your own unique way of expressing your love for someone.

Origins of 143 Slang

If you’ve ever received a text message with the numbers “143,” you might be wondering what it means. The answer is simple: “143” is a code for “I love you.” This slang term has been around for decades, and it’s still used today in digital communications.

The origins of 143 slang can be traced back to the early days of pagers. Pagers were popular in the 1990s, and they were used to send short messages to other people. Because pagers had limited space for messages, people came up with codes to convey their messages more efficiently.

The code “143” was one of the most popular codes used on pagers. It was a quick and easy way to say “I love you” without using up too much space. Each number in “143” represents the number of letters in each word of the phrase “I love you.” The “1” represents “I,” the “4” represents “love,” and the “3” represents “you.”

Today, “143” is still used in digital communications, such as text messages, chats, and social media posts. It’s a shorthand way to express affection or love for someone without having to type out the entire phrase.

If you receive a message with “143” in it, it’s usually a sign that the person sending the message cares about you deeply. You can respond with “143” to show that you feel the same way, or you can simply say “I love you” in response.

143 in Example Conversations

When you want to express your love for someone, using the phrase “I love you” can be a bit too formal or even awkward in certain situations. This is where the number 143 comes in handy as a code for expressing your feelings. Here are a few examples of how you can use 143 in conversation:

Example 1:

  • Tom: “Hey, I just wanted to say 143.”
  • Anna: “Aww, that’s so sweet! I love you too.”
  • Jim: “I’m going to send 143 to my crush on Valentine’s Day.”
  • Sun: “Good idea! It’s a cute way to show your feelings without being too forward.”
  • Jenny: “I just got a text from my friend that said 143. What does that mean?”
  • Lucy: “It means ‘I love you’. It’s a secret code some people use to express their affection.”
  • Oliver: “I’m so nervous to tell my partner how I feel.”
  • Hana: “Why don’t you send them a message with 143? It’s a subtle way to let them know without feeling too vulnerable.”

143 in Digital Communication

In the digital world, communication has become faster, easier, and more convenient. People use various platforms to send messages to their loved ones, friends, and colleagues. One of the most popular ways to express affection in digital communication is by using the code 143.

143 is a numerical expression that means “I love you.” It is widely used in text messages, social media posts, and other forms of digital communication. This code is especially popular among the younger generation and has become a part of their everyday language.

The origin of 143 dates back to the 90s when pagers were widely used. People used to send numeric codes to convey messages quickly and discreetly. 143 became a popular code for expressing love because each number represents the number of letters in each word of the phrase “I love you.”

Here are some examples of how 143 can be used in digital communication:

  • “Hey, just wanted to say goodnight and 143.”
  • “Missing you already. 143.”
  • “Thanks for being there for me always. 143.”

As you can see, people use 143 to express their love and affection towards someone. It is a quick and easy way to convey a heartfelt message without using too many words.

143 in Popular Culture

143 has become a popular slang term in recent years, especially among teenagers and young adults. It has been used in various forms of media, including movies, TV shows, and music. Here are a few examples:

  • In the hit TV show “How I Met Your Mother,” the character Marshall uses 143 to secretly communicate with his wife, Lily, that he loves her. He uses it to leave her voice messages and text messages.
  • The song “143” by Musiq Soulchild is a love song that uses the term to express the singer’s feelings towards his significant other.
  • The movie “The Fault in Our Stars” features a scene where the two main characters, Hazel and Gus, use 143 to express their love for each other.

Aside from media, 143 has also become popular in everyday conversations, especially in digital communications. It is commonly used in text messages, social media posts, and chats to express affection towards someone.

  • “I know we’ve only been dating for a few weeks, but I already feel like I’m falling for you. 143.”

Variations of 143 Slang

When it comes to expressing love or affection, 143 is not the only slang term you can use. Here are some variations of 143 that you might come across:

  • 831 : This is another code for “I love you”. The numbers represent the number of letters in each word of the phrase “8 letters, 3 words, 1 meaning”.
  • 459 : If you see this number, it means “I love you” in Chinese. The pronunciation of the numbers “four”, “five”, and “nine” in Chinese sounds similar to the words “I”, “love”, and “you”.
  • <3 : This is a popular symbol for a heart, which is often used to express love or affection in text messages or social media posts.
  • ILYSM : This stands for “I love you so much” and is often used to express strong feelings of love or affection.
  • <333 : This is an exaggerated version of the <3 symbol, which is often used to express extreme love or affection.

Here are some examples of how these slang terms might be used in conversations:

  • “I just wanted to text you and say 831, you mean the world to me.”
  • “I know we don’t speak Chinese, but 459 is still a way to say I love you.”
  • “I can’t wait to see you tonight <3.”
  • “ILYSM, you’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”
  • “I miss you so much <333.”

As you can see, there are many different ways to express love or affection in slang. While 143 may be the most well-known code for “I love you”, it’s always good to have a few different options in your back pocket.

Understanding Context for 143 Usage

If you’re new to the world of texting and online slang, you may have come across the term “143” and wondered what it means. As we saw in the previous section, 143 is a code for “I love you,” and it’s often used in text messages, emails, and social media posts.

However, it’s important to understand that the context in which 143 is used can vary. Here are a few examples:

  • Romantic relationships: When someone sends you 143 in a romantic context, it’s likely that they’re expressing their love for you. They may be saying “I love you” for the first time, or simply reminding you of their feelings.
  • Platonic relationships: 143 can also be used between friends or family members to express affection. In this case, it may not carry the same weight as it does in a romantic context, but it still conveys a sense of caring.
  • Professional settings: While 143 is generally considered a casual term, it’s important to be mindful of the context in which you use it. Sending 143 to a colleague or supervisor could be seen as unprofessional or inappropriate.

It’s also worth noting that 143 isn’t the only code for “I love you” out there. Some people may use alternative codes such as 831 (which stands for “I love you” in terms of letters: 8 letters in “I love,” 3 letters in “you”) or 459 (which stands for “I love you” in terms of numbers on a phone keypad: 4 = I, 5 = love, 9 = you).

Common Misunderstandings with 143

When it comes to slang, there are always misunderstandings and misinterpretations. 143 is no exception, and it’s important to understand what it really means to avoid confusion.

143 is not a code for anything else

Some people may think that 143 is a code for something else, such as a drug or a sexual act. However, this is not the case. 143 simply means “I love you,” and there is no hidden meaning behind it.

143 is not just for romantic love

While 143 is often used to express romantic love, it can also be used to express love for friends and family. It’s important to understand the context in which 143 is being used to fully understand its meaning.

143 is not just for text messages

While 143 is commonly used in text messages, it can also be used in other forms of communication, such as emails or social media posts. The meaning of 143 remains the same, regardless of the medium used to express it.

143 should not be used as a substitute for real communication

While 143 can be a quick and easy way to express love, it should not be used as a substitute for real communication. It’s important to have open and honest conversations with the people you love, rather than relying solely on shorthand expressions like 143.

In conclusion, 143 is a simple and meaningful way to express love, but it’s important to understand its true meaning and context to avoid misunderstandings.

The Impact of 143 on Modern Slang

If you’ve spent any time texting, chatting, or using social media, you’ve probably come across the term “143” at some point. This numeric symbol has become a staple of modern slang, particularly in digital communications. But what impact has it had on the way we communicate?

First and foremost, 143 has helped to simplify the expression of love and affection. Instead of typing out “I love you,” which can be time-consuming and cumbersome, you can simply type “143” and convey the same sentiment. This has made it easier for people to express their feelings quickly and efficiently, without sacrificing the emotional impact of the message.

Another key impact of 143 has been its ability to transcend language barriers. Because it is a numeric symbol, it can be understood by people of all languages and cultures. This has made it a truly universal expression of love, one that can be used by people all over the world to connect and share their feelings.

In addition to its practical benefits, 143 has also had a profound cultural impact. It has become a symbol of modern romance, appearing in countless movies, TV shows, and songs. It has also spawned countless memes and social media trends, further solidifying its place in modern slang.

CASE 143 English Translation

  • SIDE-BY-SIDE

A new case, an unforgettable case I’m falling for your fatal attraction You, who keeps setting me on fire are a question with an unknown source, homework that needs to be done

Can I be your boyfriend? I’ve never faked my attitude towards you, no cap It’s full of stuff I want to tell you, my case There are no words that describe the perfection

You got me losing patience The uncontrollable emotion You’re on my mind, I never feel alright Numerous emotions collide, what’s going on

Rolling in the deep inside my head You got me bad Letting my guard down Swiftly moving towards you, on my way

Why do I keep getting attracted I’m drawn to you like a magnet I cannot explain this reaction The only thing I can say is 143

Why do I keep getting attracted Only you’re on my mind I cannot explain this emotion 143 I LOVE YOU

A B C D E F G I Wanna send my code to you 8 letters is all it takes And I’m gonna let you know oh

Stacked high for everyone except you, my barricade (barricade) You can call me anything, code name (call me baby) Even if I’m greedy, I want to be your soulmate (whoo) My feelings are growing, upgrade ’cause

Rolling in the deep inside my head You got me bad Letting my guard down Swiftly moving to you, on my way

Heartbeat, all my conditions are in crisis (crisis) The way you look ain’t no “false” My inner feelings again repeat (repeat)

Walking next to you but I’m falling I’m falling deeper I’m drawn to you You’re pulling me deeper and deeper I try to get out but I can’t stop

Can I be the one? Yeah I’ll be the one I recklessly dare to use cringy expressions My head is numb, cut away the emotionless thoughts Moving, I’m on my way

Why do I keep getting attracted I’m drawn to you like a magnet I cannot explain this reaction (The only thing I can say is)

I’m gonna let you know (know) That I’m just gonna go (go) And hold you so I’m never letting go

I’m gonna let you know (know) That I’m just gonna go (just go) Yeah I’m heading towards you right now, like I’m

Never letting go oh I cannot explain this emotion 143 I LOVE YOU

Meaning of CASE 143 by Stray Kids

what is case 143 mean

"Case 143" by Stray Kids is a song about the feeling of being attracted to someone, to the point where you can't help but be drawn to them. The lyrics describe the narrator falling in love with someone despite the fact that all logic and reason seems to be telling them to stay away. The chorus of the song features the phrase "one-four-three," which is a reference to the "143" in the song title. This number can be seen as a code for "I Love You," which is a strong representation of the emotional intensity of the song. The song is ultimately about finding support and strength in love, and showing the courage to take a risk and pursue a relationship despite obstacles.

The Bias List // K-Pop Reviews & Discussion

K-pop reviews and discussion with just a hint of bias…, song review: stray kids – case 143.

Stray Kids - Case 143

Those adjectives perfect describe Case 143 – the group’s freewheeling return to a bright concept. Like March’s Maniac , the track melds hip-hop verses to a rhythmic hook fueled by electronic undertones. The contrast feels less jarring here, but I’m not sure it’s any more successful.

This is very much a personal pet peeve (don’t kill me, fans…), but I’ve always had a hard time with content that feels overly pleased with its own cleverness. This has become a big part of Stray Kids’ appeal (ie: their “idea bank”), but I find it kind of exhausting. My brain wants the music to breathe and grow and lean into its strengths. Instead, it feels like they’re constantly waving things in my face. “Look at this!” “And this!” “Isn’t this cool?”

Stray Kids are cool. There’s no doubt about that. And, Case 143 has some standout moments. But, it’s not until the last few seconds when the song really comes together. The staccato nature of its chorus works well as a response to a contrasting melody line. On its own, it becomes repetitive very quickly. Paired with the throw-everything-and-the-kitchen-sink percussion that underpins much of the verses, Case 143 is a prickly beast. I’m not sure it’s for me – even if that descending hook is already lodged in my memory.

I watched the teasers and wasn’t expecting to like it, but based on my first listen, I think it’s pretty darn fun. There are so many little catchy parts that make the song so satisfying. Though I do prefer choruses with solid melodies and amazing harmonies, I’m pretty happy with this. I’m really excited to listen to the rest of the album too!

Also, shout out to the director! That music video is so entertaining and cool.

we can’t expect them to keep the same sound. if you enjoy songs like miroh and district9 than you can always listen to them. Skz always changes their sound, and a true fan will adapt.

Like Liked by 1 person

the commenter didn’t really say anything about that though..? also idk if it was intentional but the “true fan” thing irks me a bit, not everyone has to like everything a group puts out. someone can be a superfan and still not have to “adapt” to a sound if they don’t like it. it’s ok to not adore a song, doesn’t mean you’re less of a fan for it

Like Liked by 3 people

the commenter never really said anything about that though…? i’m guessing you meant to comment on the main post itself. also the “true fan” thing irks me a bit, idk if this was the intention, but this comes off like “you’re only a true fan if you like every release” which just isn’t true (and isn’t realistic). like you said yourself, skz experiments a lot, which inevitably means that there’ll be cbs that aren’t every superfan’s cup of tea. you’re not less of a fan if you don’t adore the latest cb.

(ah sorry for replying twice, thought the first one didn’t get sent!)

I thought the chorus was going to be the snippet in the 2nd MV teaser, and I was pretty happy with that, but then the Tiktok snippets released and the most annoying line in the MV teaser (“I cannot explain this emotion”) became a whole segment…and I was like please don’t be the whole chorus LOL

Well here we are and it is in fact the chorus. I don’t know what happened but it’s already grown on me, maybe it’s just too catchy, I don’t even know. Still wish Chan’s line near the end was the actual chorus, but I think I like this one! I also find the MV adorable so maybe that’s bias trickling in but we’ll see haha

Haven’t checked out the album yet but just from the track teasers I’m excited for Give Me Your TMI…👀

“overly pleased with its own cleverness” is a harsh but fair assessment of stray kids’ output as of late. and this is a group i absolutely adore – i actually first found out about them through this blog and have loved them ever since they topped your year-end list wit “miroh”. but their singles in the past couple of years have often felt like an attempt to live up to fans’ expectations of whatever qualifies as “weird” or “new” or “cool” or “edgy” in k-pop. That has occasionally produced some hits for me personally (i still love circus for reasons that are inexplicable to me, and thunderous went from a huge disappointment to a playlist mainstay in the span of a couple days). But I worry about their long-term trajectory a bit.

That being said, I’m sure this will grow on me with a few listens – it seems like no matter what they do, that’s the case. As of now, it feels a bit disorganized.

Yeah, I also agree that it’s unfortunately a good way of summing up Stray Kids over the past couple of years. After God’s Menu blew up it feels like they’ve been stuck doing all these weird gimmicks in their title tracks to try and shake things up, but it ends feeling like they’re trying too hard to do something different instead of actually experimenting or making an actual song lol. Their bsides have been more successful as actual songs for me at this point.

I wonder how many 神메뉴-dynasty-songs have left on Bang Chan’s laptop. As if it could be more than ten…(so scary)

JYP Ent now is milking them in many ways, thus I’m so worried about how they’ll have the right amount of time and enough distant environment to reform their thoughts strongly, in order to completely change their opinions on making music. They’re subtly being manipulated by their own success. And looking at the achievement of Maxident, it’s tough for them to let the God’s Menu fortune go.

Not only their after 2020 title tracks but also their most recent b-sides are 神메뉴 legacies. Give me your TMI from Maxident as they say it was done a long time ago (before 2020 for sure) is what I’m longing for.

They stick with the idea of showing multiple elements in an around 3 minutes song sounds so crazy but in fact, they’re out of control to cohere them as a whole.

Yes, at the pace they’re going they don’t have a chance to rest and really take the time to focus on their music. And unfortunately they’re making JYP so much money that it only encourages JYP to schedule comebacks more and more quickly. I’m hoping it doesn’t end the same as with Twice, where some of their members had to go on hiatus for a few months, but at the rate they’re going I don’t see it ending well for either the members’ health or artistic output.

I just really dislike the instrumental in parts of the song. I had a similar feeling about Maniac and that song never grew on me. Expecting the same with this song.

Off topic, but I just want say I love The Boyz’s new song. Idk if you’ll make a review of it since I couldn’t find a review for Runner by Baekhyun even though I thought you did. Anyways, definitely my favorite tbz song since Drink It.

nearly bust a gut laughing when i first heard that chorus and I love how aggressive it is for a love song. there’s a lot of great moments in the track outside of the chorus (especially at the end) but IMO i find Maniac a much more coherently built and catchy track. some parts of 143 just feel a bit overcooked to me

Overall didn’t impress anything with the whole song. It’s a cake with too many layers that they don’t fit together perfectly. The song keeps pulling me into a tunnel with no way out. The line “Why do I keep getting attracted” is so obnoxious even though it could stick well like bad words have unpredictable superpowers. When the TikTok challenge came out and I horribly knew that it was the actual chorus, I begged it to grow gracefully like New Jeans’s Attention but it was a real disaster.

Didn’t get along with all songs of Oddinary but for Maxident I can jam to some songs at least. Wish Super Board would not be so repetitive and burst into a bigger hook, 2/3 of the unit songs are not my cup of tea.

Have to accept the fact that they would never gift me another Miroh. Since 2020!

Imma need Stray Kids to lose their signature post-God’s Menu sound and ACTUALLY offer us something new. Their music has been super predictable as of late, and that’s really alarming for a group branded as “being different”.

Case 143 and Maniac are extremely sonically different from Gods Menu, Thunderous and Back Door. I think y’all either don’t understand music or are prejudiced. It’s ok to say its not your taste but to say CASE 143 was predictable is simply false. Even the fans weren’t expecting it.

I don’t think it is like God’s Menu and it was definitely not predictable as it was a totally different concept they were trying and everyone was worried that how will it sound even the fans especially after seeing the 2nd teaser. It kinda gives Maniac and Circus vibe, I didn’t like Maniac but Case 143 works for me.

Well, as a stay I am totally ultimately biased so I can’t blame them for trying to sound new. SKZ were a new group with a cool new sound, now they are an established group that has to always be as good as before. They don’t have to put out a good song, but a song that’s better or at least as good as Miroh or the Go live album. And that quite a feast, so I always expect to be a bit disappointed by skz comebacks. I thought I wouldn’t like the song on first listen, but it is stuck in my head now (Thunderous was also an unexpected grower). The whole mini is amazing. The songs are great overall, it’s like they encapsulate a lot of influences while still having a unity because of skz distinctive style. Give me your TMI is the highlight for me since the trailer, but Chill, Taste, and Seugmin and IN’s song were a pleasant surprise. Chill has Han’s signature all over it, and I just love his style. Taste goes somewhere interesting in some places. And Seugmin and In song is like the ultimate homage to indie Jpop (Necrytalkie anyone?) and Day6. (On a side note, through Chill lyrics we finally know what conversation went down before Day6 Shoot me…)

Theme-wise, overall, this is quite a bizarre, patched-up take on love, alternating between violence, excitement and sweetness, and Stray kids still manage to make it work.

Well, sorry for the overly passionate personal review, I’m just gonna go relisten to the mini and go stan in peace!

I’m curious about your thoughts on the album. Although I haven’t listened to the album yet, from the teasers I think “Give Me Your TMI” will be your buried treasure because it calls back to their EDM phase a few years ago, which you loved.

Yeah it’s my favourite track from the album too! And it’s written a couple of years ago, which tracks with their output from those eras

I’m here for this one, actually — at least for now! Didn’t even know they were having a comeback. It’s super goofy and there’s way more English than I’d prefer, but the last Stray Kids song (not just title) I liked was Back Door way back in 2020. The fact that I hit replay on the MV at all is pretty exciting.

i somewhat like it but not sure how well it will age. however, some of the other songs on the album are very nice like the obviously day6 inspired can’t stop. seungmin my man, knew i could trust him lol.

I think your pet peeve about SKZ is exactly the reason why I like them lol! 🙂 But I haven’t been around in kpop that long to feel jaded by a lot of stuff. I discovered SKZ with God’s menu, so even though I did go back to their old stuff and absolutely love them, the new stuff is also something I do connect with.

Coming to the song itself – ngl the pinks in the trailer terrified me 💀 I was praying with all my heart that this was not going to be their calling to do a Thrill Ride or Whisper like TBZ. So on that note, since it was still very SKZ and pretty fun I liked it!

The chorus is pretty catchy and I liked Bang Chan’s and Seungmin’s parts. I’m also low-key digging how after Maniac they not just realized Felix can hit the chorus bit but also that his second chorus counterpart could be Hyunjin! 😂 It’s a way lighter concept than what they had done for a while but it was pretty fun and I’m sure like most SKZ songs it will catch on after I watch them perform it.

Case 143 belongs to God’s Menu movement and shares the same shapes and shades with Christmas Evel but throws at my face more pains than pleasures.

Have no idea how the chorus was made. The jazz part that comes right after the first round is rather irrelevant and annoys me which I thought should’ve been a joyful break. The opening of the second verse is outrageous and no longer attractive. The last part seems to be overly redundant and I’m so ambivalent about it (reminds me of Christmas Evel final part constantly). Think they wanted to paint an ambitious vibrant picture with the rhythmic ups and downs brushes but sadly they made the wrong lines as well as put them in the wrong place.

I would like to put this song into the same category as Dice by the brand-mate NMIXX. They both give me the cheesy-messy vibe, that’s all~

I honestly really like the production on this and I love how creative they get with it but I don’t know if this will ever fully click with me. It’s very quirky and full of personality but it seems a bit all over the place and there isn’t any particular melody that sticks with me. It’s at a weird dichotomy for me because it is a lot of fun to listen to due to all the details and intricacies but at the same time it’s pretty hookless and nothing about it makes me want to listen to it again.

Obviously, I would rather have a strong hook and strong melodies to compliment the song but honestly if I had to choose between bland and safe and this, I’d most likely choose this.

Time will tell how this song will fair with me but I like this direction, Stray Kids, its good. Now you just need to throw some killer melodies on it and you’ll be great.

That descending line wears itself out. It starts the song, it weaves behind most of the verse, and then there it is again as the main line in the chorus repeated 8 times over. Enough already. The drop into a light latin jazz beat in the 2nd verse was refreshing, briefly. The rest of it meets boy group standards. “Maniac” will probably rank high on my year end list (ping! ping!) but this one will not. Rating is about right.

Oh, how I *despise* the ping, ping. Nearly kills the song for me, tbh.

The song tries to do way too much at once. Worse yet, the chorus is so fucking repetitive that I feel it’s gonna become grating after the second listen. I can see what Case 143 is trying to do, which is being dumb fun. Alas, it comes across as a series of catchphrases which go nowhere instead. Mid-7’s for me (8,8,7,7).

I like this a lot more than Maniac and Venom. This one’s going on my playlist for sure.

One listen will not be enough for me to understand this song – I think I listened to most of it with my head tilted in confusion. I definitely perked up around the 3 minute mark though and wondered why they hadn’t done that for all of the choruses. That bit I really liked. And there were some nice melodic things happening in the pre-chorus. The rest I’m kind of “meh” about.

The end is what people would usually expect the chorus of a generic pop song to be, and generic is the antithesis of Stray Kids.

It is very, very werid. 8 for me (8, 8, 8, 8)

I just didnt expect what I got I guess 🤣 time to Stockholm myself into loving it. The b sides fair slightly better. Especially chill and taste.

I liked this very much. It’s a crazy quilt of a journey, but the beat is the same throughout and I like how Felix’s verses kind of hold it together. I’m not a Stay, although I think the group is adorable, but I’ll add it to the three other Stray Kids songs I like, as well as the 8-bit version of Venom which is pretty great.

Interesting comment, given that 8-bit venom actually felt physically painful to my ears lol

It sounds like snakes and Kraftwerk played on a roller rink organ, that’s why I like it.

I have very mixed feelings on this. The concept is cute–a prickly, confused love song, and the MV kind of nailed it, but the verses & chorus sound like Maniac over again. I liked Maniac so I’m not complaining but SKZ are certainly inventive enough to try something different? That said, it’s catchy and punchy and the outro is the kind of awesome switch-up I want them to try out more. The concept is also pretty different for them so that’s nice to see.

We’ll see how much it grows on me, but for now I’m digging the b-sides a lot more.

I feel exhausted halfway through 😭 A few b-side songs fare better, but nothing hits me yet like the ones in noeasy

their most annoying song yet and that’s saying a lot

It’s like the Stray Kids version of Itzy’s LOCO. I dig it.

Thought the same, except I love Loco lol

I loved this the moment I heard it. It’s just so darn fun! They seem to really enjoy themselves and they communicate that well.

I thought this was pretty cute! And this is coming from someone whose taste in Stray Kids is still stuck at Hellevator.

This is my least favorite single of theirs in a while. Like I genuinely enjoy their more combative sound, even though they’ve been in a bit of a holding pattern. This one, too little was going on in the first two and a half minutes or so to really hold my attention. Mid 7s for me, sadly.

Stray Kids is so much fun. I love them. This song is really good and their choreography is always great.

“CAN I BE YOUR BOYFRIEND?!”, and I burst out laughing.

It’s fun, even if it is kinda disappointing. I guess this is Stray Kids take on a love (crush?) song. It’s just not as catchy as previous tts. With the chorus being their weakest and the verses being mostly unremarkable, Case 143 is just OK.

I’m gonna give it a 7.5.

P.S. My sister and mom (both Hyunjin biased) are scarred by that awful haircut. Meanwhile, I’m living my best life as a Lee Know stan lmao

Please, we genuinely can’t talk about that haircut here. My only solace is that for a couple of stages they’ve styled it in a way that saved the whole look. But it is one of the most violent incidents in kpop history for sure.

Congratulations though, Lino not only looks amazing this era but sounds incredible too– did you hear him on “Taste”? I had no idea he could sing like that! His acting is outstanding too in the MVs, he’s really the whole package.

Yes, Minho was really good in the MV (I also thought he was great in the Maniac MV). Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to listen to the album yet, so I’m just going to have to trust you on “Taste” lol.

I only recently got into them and rn I’m on the “Go Live” album, so I have a bit more to catch up on. It’s sad, but hopefully I’ll be caught up by the next comeback and I can fully immerse myself in the era.

P.S. The hair somehow got worse. I just watched the Studio Choom and it’s orange??? I mean, Hyunjin still looks good (how could he not, with that face) but I’m seriously wondering who thought this was a good idea lmao

Well, welcome to staydom 🙂 As a Lee Knower you are in for a treat when you finally do watch his Taste fancams… yeah… let’s just say it’s a treat.

I wouldn’t say it’s necessary to listen to an artist’s whole catalog in order but I guess it’s how you like to do things, which is fine :)… and Go Live/In Life is a really really great era, some of their best work is on that album and its repackage.

As a Hyunjinner here I’ll say I think he did this on purpose because he’s an eccentric who has sort of a complex about his looks. For example, before his Artist of the Month feature last year, he also had a big dramatic haircut, and he wore a cap that obscured part of his face for some of the video too. He said later that he used the cap because he wanted people to focus on his dancing instead of his looks.

So I think he Nerfed himself on purpose this time. Well… it wouldn’t have been my choice, but at least it’ll grow out. I’m with you on the color for CHOOM this time being atrocious, too…

I’ve given it some time, but I think the song is just a little too repetitive to be a favorite for me. I don’t think it’s bad at all, but I prefer almost every other song on the album. Maniac grew on me like Thunderous did, but I don’t think this one will. I also thought the choreo for Maniac was more engaging. For this one, I like the prechorus and Felix’s second-verse rap, but that’s not really enough to make me hit repeat. I will say that I thought Maniac was a stronger title track, but a worse album overall (I detested Lonely St). Whereas 143 itself is weaker, but Maxident as a whole is more polished.

I think Stray Kids would benefit creatively and mentally from a hiatus. No other artists I can think release full albums so regularly. It’s got to be burning them out. At this point they are a money making machine not a creative entity and you can feel it in their music. Sweet kids but they lost me as a fan in early 2020.

Stray Kids desperately need creative input that doesnt come from within the group, their title tracks this year have been an odd mishmash of trying to force Felix to make his voice as deep as possible to get a Tiktok sound bite and the quality has diminished accordingly. Until they learn how to properly incorporate his sometimes good sometimes extremely obnoxious vocal tone they need to stick with giving him bit parts and small sentences like they used to do before Gods Menu. His chorus and bridge on Case 143 are atrocious.

This song just has too many cooks in the kitchen, there are 8 members in the group and they’re going to make sure everybody gets the same amount of parts at the expense of the actual song. Chan’s odd mumbling in the second verse is a great example of that, he doesn’t need a vocal moment there that doesn’t fit the song and he doesnt pull it off at all but they keep it in to make sure he gets his moment. There are many parts of this song I don’t think would have been approved for release if the main producers of the song weren’t also the group members themselves.

143 is code for "I love you." The numbers 1, 4, and 3 correspond to the number of letters in each of the three words:

  • I          1 letter
  • Iove   4 letters
  • you    3 letters

What is the origin of 143?

The legend of 143 dates back to the 1890s, when a new lantern was installed at Minots Ledge Light, a lighthouse near Boston Harbor. It always flashed once, then four times, and then three times, before repeating its sequence.

Because the lighthouse's flashes corresponded to the characters in the phrase "I love you," people in the area began associating the flashes and the number 143 with the phrase. However, it's unknown exactly who originally came up with this association.

One story posits that young couples were the first to assign meaning to Minots Ledge Light's flashes. They apparently referred to the lighthouse as Lover's Light. Another story says the flashes were a message from the lighthouse keeper to his children while he was working.

Whatever the case, 143 is used in the modern era to mean "I love you" in text, chat, and social media messages.

Judge fines Donald Trump more than $350 million, bars him from running businesses in N.Y. for three years

The judge who presided over a civil business fraud trial against Donald Trump on Friday ordered the former president, his sons, business associates and company to pay more than $350 million in damages and temporarily limited their ability to do business in New York.

Judge Arthur Engoron ordered the former president and the Trump Organization to pay over $354 million in damages , and barred Trump “from serving as an officer or director of any New York corporation or other legal entity in New York for a period of three years,” including his namesake company.

New York Attorney General Letitia James, whose office brought the case, said that with pre-judgment interest, the judgment totals over $450 million, an amount “which will continue to increase every single day” until the judgment is paid.

“Donald Trump is finally facing accountability for his lying, cheating, and staggering fraud. Because no matter how big, rich, or powerful you think you are, no one is above the law,” James said in a statement, calling the ruling “a tremendous victory for this state, this nation, and for everyone who believes that we all must play by the same rules — even former presidents.”

The ruling also bars Trump and his company from applying for any bank loans for three years.

In his first public remarks after the ruling, Trump said, “We’ll appeal and we’ll be successful.”

Speaking to reporters at Mar-a-Lago on Friday night, Trump bashed the ruling as “a fine of 350 million for a doing a perfect job.” He also repeated previous attacks by calling the judge “crooked” and the attorney general “corrupt.”

Trump did not take any questions from reporters after speaking for about six minutes.

The judge’s decision is a potential blow to both Trump’s finances and persona — having built his brand on being a successful businessman that he leveraged in his first run for president. Trump is currently running for the White House for a third time. This case is just one of many he is currently facing, including four separate pending criminal trials, the first of which is scheduled to begin on March 25.

Engoron also ordered the continued “appointment of an Independent Monitor” and the “the installation of an Independent Director of Compliance” for the company.

In posts on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump called the ruling “an illegal, unAmerican judgment against me, my family, and my tremendous business.”

“This ‘decision’ is a complete and total sham,” he wrote.

During the trial, Trump and executives at his company, including his sons Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, attempted to blame exaggerated financial statements that were the heart of New York Attorney General Letitia James’ fraud case on the accountants who compiled them. Engoron disagreed.

“There is overwhelming evidence from both interested and non-interested witnesses, corroborated by documentary evidence, that the buck for being truthful in the supporting data valuations stopped with the Trump Organization, not the accountants,” he wrote.

In explaining the need for a monitor, the judge cited the lack of remorse by Trump and his executives after the fraud was discovered.

“Their complete lack of contrition and remorse borders on pathological. They are accused only of inflating asset values to make more money. The documents prove this over and over again. This is a venial sin, not a mortal sin. Defendants did not commit murder or arson. They did not rob a bank at gunpoint. Donald Trump is not Bernard Madoff. Yet, defendants are incapable of admitting the error of their ways,” Engoron wrote.

“Defendants’ refusal to admit error — indeed, to continue it, according to the Independent Monitor — constrains this Court to conclude that they will engage in it going forward unless judicially restrained,” he added.

The ruling also bars the Trump sons — who’ve been running the company since their father went to the White House — “from serving as an officer or director of any New York corporation or other legal entity in New York for a period of two years.” Both were fined over $4 million, plus interest, for their roles in the scheme.

Donald Trump Jr. posted on the social media site X that “We’ve reached the point where your political beliefs combined with what venue your case is heard are the primary determinants of the outcome; not the facts of the case! It’s truly sad what’s happened to our country.”

In a statement, Eric Trump called the judge “a cruel man.”

“He knows that every single witness testified to that fact that I had absolutely NOTHING to do with this case (as INSANE as the case truly is),” Eric Trump said.

He also attacked the ruling as “political vengeance by a judge out to get my father.”

Trump attorney Alina Habba called the verdict “a manifest injustice — plain and simple.”

“Given the grave stakes, we trust that the Appellate Division will overturn this egregious verdict and end this relentless persecution against my clients,” she said in a statement.

A spokesperson for Trump Organization called the ruling “a gross miscarriage of justice. The Trump Organization has never missed any loan payment or been in default on any loan.”

High legal costs

An appeal in the case would likely take years, but Trump could have to post a bond for the full amount if he does so.

The judgment is the second this year against Trump after he was hit last month with an $83.3 million verdict in writer E. Jean Carroll’s defamation case against him. Trump has said he plans to appeal that verdict as well, but would have to post a bond for that amount as well.

James had been seeking $370 million from Trump, his company and its top executives, alleging “repeated and persistent fraud ” that included falsifying business records and financial statements. James had argued those financial statements were at times exaggerated by as much as $2.2 billion.

James contended the defendants used the inflated financial statements to obtain bank loans and insurance policies at rates he otherwise wouldn’t have been entitled to and “reaped hundreds of millions of dollars in ill-gotten gains.”

Trump had maintained his financial statements were conservative, and has called the AG’s allegations politically motivated and a “fraud on me.”

“This is a case that should have never been brought, and I think we should be entitled to damages,” Trump told reporters when he attended closing arguments in the case on Jan. 11.

Trump testimony knocked

The monthslong civil trial included testimony from Trump and his oldest children . The former president was combative in his day on the stand, blasting James as a “hack” and calling the judge “extremely hostile.”

Trump repeatedly complained about Engoron before and throughout the trial, and the judge slapped him with a partial gag order after he started blasting the judge’s law clerk as well. Trump’s complaints led to a flood of death threats against the clerk, as well as Engoron, court officials said, and Trump was fined $15,000 for twice violating the order.

Among the examples cited as fraud by the attorney general’s office during the trial was Trump valuing his triplex home in Trump Tower in New York City at three times its actual size and value, as well as including a brand value to increase the valuation of his golf courses on the financial statements, which explicitly said brand values were not included.

Another example pointed to by the attorney general clearly got under his skin — a dispute over the value of Mar-a-Lago, his social club and residence in Florida. Trump’s financial statements from 2011 to 2021 valued Mar-a-Lago at $426 million to $612 million, while the Palm Beach County assessor appraised the property’s market value to be $18 million to $27 million during the same time frame. Trump had also fraudulently puffed up the value of the property by saying it was a private residence, despite having signed an agreement that it could only be used as a social club to lower his tax burden.

Trump maintained during the trial the property was worth much, much more .

“The judge had it at $18 million, and it is worth, say, I say from 50 to 100 times more than that. So I don’t know how you got those numbers,” Trump testified, adding later that he thinks it’s actually worth “between a billion and a billion five.”

In his ruling Friday, Engoron said he didn’t find Trump to be a credible witness.

“Overall, Donald Trump rarely responded to the questions asked, and he frequently interjected long, irrelevant speeches on issues far beyond the scope of the trial. His refusal to answer the questions directly, or in some cases, at all, severely compromised his credibility,” the judge wrote.

Michael Cohen testimony ‘credible’

James’ investigation into the former president’s business began in 2019 as a result of congressional testimony from his former personal lawyer Michael Cohen , who told the House Oversight Committee that Trump would improperly expand and shrink values to fit whatever his business needs were.

Cohen testified during the trial about his role in the scheme, and said while Trump didn’t explicitly tell him and then-Chief Financial Officer Allen Weisselberg to inflate the numbers in the financial statement, he was like a “mob boss” who tells you what he wants without directly telling you.

Trump claimed Cohen’s testimony exonerated him while also painting him as an untrustworthy liar because he admitted having previously lied under oath.

In his ruling, Engoron called Cohen an “important witness” and said he found his testimony “credible.” “This factfinder does not believe that pleading guilty to perjury means that you can never tell the truth. Michael Cohen told the truth,” the judge wrote.

Former CFO ‘evasive’

Engoron was less forgiving about former Trump CFO Weisselberg, who previously pleaded guilty to carrying out tax fraud at the company.

Weisselberg’s “testimony in this trial was intentionally evasive, with large gaps of ‘I don’t remember.’”

“There is overwhelming evidence that Allen Weisselberg intentionally falsified hundreds of business records during his tenure” at the company, the judge wrote. “Weisselberg understood that his assignment from Donald Trump was to have his reported assets increase every year irrespective of their actual values. The examples of Weisselberg’s intent to falsify business records are too numerous to itemize,” he added.

The judge permanently barred Weisselberg “from serving in the financial control function of any New York corporation or similar business entity operating in New York State,” and ordered him to pay the $1 million he’s already received from his $2 million separation agreement from the company as “ill-gotten gains.”

AG initially sought less

James filed her suit seeking $250 million in damages from Trump in 2022, and the judge appointed a monitor to oversee the company’s finances that November.

In a summary judgment  ruling the week before the trial started, Engoron found Trump and his executives had repeatedly engaged in fraud. The “documents here clearly contain fraudulent valuations that defendants used in business, satisfying [the attorney general’s] burden to establish liability as a matter of law against defendants,” the judge wrote, while denying Trump’s bid to dismiss the case.

Engoron summarized the Trump defense as “the documents do not say what they say; that there is no such thing as ‘objective’ value; and that, essentially, the Court should not believe its own eyes.”

The order, which Trump appealed, held that Trump’s business certificates in New York should be canceled, which could have wreaked havoc on Trump’s company and forced the sell-off of some assets.

Engoron backed off of that decision in his ruling Friday, saying the addition of the “two-tiered oversight” of the monitor and the compliance director makes that move “no longer necessary.”

Trump had complained about the summary judgment ruling while he was on the witness stand. “He said I was a fraud before he knew anything about me, nothing about me,” Trump said. “It’s a terrible thing you did.”

NEW YORK (AP) — Former President Donald Trump is expected in court Thursday for an important hearing in his New York hush-money criminal case , which now appears increasingly likely to go to trial next month.

Judge Juan Manuel Merchan is set to rule on key pretrial issues and say for certain if the trial will begin as scheduled on March 25. If that happens, the New York case will be the first of Trump’s four criminal indictments to go to trial.

Trump’s lawyers have asked Merchan to dismiss the case entirely . The judge’s recent activities suggest that’s unlikely to happen. In recent weeks, court records show, Merchan has been communicating with defense lawyers and Manhattan prosecutors to plan jury selection for a March trial.

A delay might cause conflicts in Trump’s crowded legal calendar .

Trump, the Republican front-runner in his quest to return to the White House, has not been in court for the New York case since his arraignment last April , though he did appear by video for a hearing in May where the judge warned him against posting evidence to social media or using it to attack witnesses.

Here’s a refresher on where the case stands.

WHAT IS THIS CASE ABOUT?

Trump’s New York case involves an alleged scheme to prevent potentially damaging stories about his personal life from becoming public during his 2016 presidential campaign.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg charged Trump last year with falsifying internal records kept by his company, the Trump Organization , to hide the true nature of payments made to his then-lawyer Michael Cohen, for helping bury stories alleging Trump had extramarital sexual encounters.

The case centers on payoffs to two women, porn actor Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal , as well as to a Trump Tower doorman who claimed to have a story about Trump having a child out of wedlock. Trump says he didn’t have any of the alleged sexual encounters.

Cohen paid Daniels $130,000 and arranged for the publisher of the National Enquirer supermarket tabloid to pay McDougal $150,000 in a practice known as “catch-and-kill.”

The Trump Organization then reimbursed Cohen at an amount far more than what he’d spent, prosecutors said. The company logged the payments — delivered in monthly installments and a year-end bonus check — as legal expenses, prosecutors said. Over several months, Cohen said he got $420,000.

The records at issue include general ledger entries, invoices and checks that prosecutors say were falsified.

WHAT IS TRUMP CHARGED WITH?

Trump is charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records . The charge is a Class E felony in New York, the lowest tier of felony charges in the state. It is punishable by up to four years in prison, though there is no guarantee that a conviction would result in jail time.

Because it is a state case, Trump would not be able to pardon himself if he were to become president again. Presidential pardons only apply to federal crimes.

To convict Trump of a felony, prosecutors must show he not only falsified or caused business records to be entered falsely, which would be a misdemeanor, but that he did so to conceal another crime .

Prosecutors did not specify the other crime in Trump’s indictment, but have since said that evidence shows his actions were meant to conceal campaign finance crimes.

The payments to Daniels and McDougal violated federal restrictions on corporate and individual campaign contributions, prosecutors said, and were meant to “conceal damaging information from the voting public.”

Prosecutors also said that characterizing the payments to Cohen as income rather than a reimbursement amounted to a tax crime, even if it didn’t result in the government getting cheated out of taxes.

Cohen pleaded guilty to a campaign finance crime for his role in the alleged hush-money scheme . The publisher of the National Enquirer signed a non-prosecution agreement with federal prosecutors, who considered the payment to McDougal an illegal corporate contribution to Trump’s campaign.

WHAT DO TRUMP AND HIS LAWYERS SAY?

Trump has denied any wrongdoing and pleaded not guilty. He has repeatedly assailed the hush-money investigation and indictment as “political persecution.” His lawyers argue the payments to Cohen were legitimate legal expenses and not part of any cover-up.

In their request to have the case thrown out , which Merchan is to decide at Thursday’s hearing, Trump’s lawyers accused Bragg, a Democrat, of reviving a so-called “zombie case” to interfere with the Republican front-runner’s chances of retaking the White House.

Bragg’s predecessor, Cyrus Vance Jr., declined to pursue a case on the same allegations .

“After a five-year meandering, halting, and roving investigation that entailed inexplicable and unconstitutional delay, the District Attorney’s Office filed a discombobulated package of politically motivated charges marred by legal defects,” Trump lawyers Todd Blanche and Susan Necheles argued in their 57-page motion to dismiss the case.

WHAT DOES THE CASE MEAN FOR TRUMP?

The New York indictment , filed on March 30, 2023, made Trump the first former U.S. president ever to face criminal charges. Trump was subsequently indicted in Georgia and Washington, D.C. on charges that he plotted to overturn his 2020 election loss, and in Florida for hoarding classified documents.

Despite the sting to Trump’s reputation and the spectacle of his historic arraignment last April, the New York case is arguably the least perilous of Trump’s four indictments . While a guilty verdict would give him another historic moniker as the first ex-president convicted of a crime, it’s unlikely Trump would be sentenced to significant prison time.

New York court records and newspaper archives show defendants convicted of felony falsifying business records are seldom sentenced to prison for that offense alone. Often, the charge is coupled with more serious felonies like grand larceny.

In contrast, the most serious charges in Trump’s Washington, D.C. and Georgia election cases carry maximum 20-year sentences. Each of the more than 30 willful retention counts in his Florida classified documents case carries a maximum 10-year sentence.

WHAT’S AT STAKE AT THURSDAY’S HEARING?

Merchan is slated to rule on various requests from Trump’s lawyers and prosecutors, including the defense’s motion to dismiss the case entirely .

If Merchan were to grant the motion, the charges would be dropped and there would be no trial. If he denies it, Trump’s lawyers have asked for hearings to explore Constitutional and procedural issues they say “provide alternative basis” for throwing out the charges.

Those issues include claims that Trump was a target of selective prosecution, that the yearslong delay in bringing charges violated his legal rights, and that purported leaks of information about the grand jury investigation created ”political pressure on the prosecutors and grand jurors to indict him.”

Prosecutors, in their reply to the defense’s motion , said the evidence “more than supports” the charges. They contend that Trump is seeking special treatment and attempting to “evade criminal responsibility” because he’s a current presidential candidate.

Prosecutors have accused Trump’s lawyers of ignoring deadlines to turn over evidence and engaging in potential witness intimidation by sending Cohen a subpoena in October that sought a wide array of documents.

WHAT ELSE HAS HAPPENED?

Two big developments: Trump’s lawyers asked Merchan to step aside from the case and they tried to get it moved from state court to federal court . Both failed.

In August, Merchan rejected Trump’s demand that he recuse himself , denying defense claims that he’s biased because he’s given cash to Democrats and his daughter is a Democratic political consultant. The judge did acknowledge making several small donations to Democratic causes during the 2020 campaign, including $15 to Trump’s rival Joe Biden. But, he said he is certain of his “ability to be fair and impartial.”

In July, a federal judge rejected Trump’s bid to move the case to federal court. Trump’s lawyers had argued that he couldn’t be tried in state court because the alleged conduct occurred while he was president. U.S. District Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein ruled that the hush-money case involved a personal matter, not official presidential duties.

What the Civil Fraud Ruling Means for Trump’s Finances and His Empire

Justice Arthur F. Engoron’s decision could drain all of former President Donald J. Trump’s cash, and will set his family business reeling.

Donald Trump, in a dark suit and long blue tie, gestures behind a barricade.

By Jonah E. Bromwich and Ben Protess

Donald J. Trump lost his civil fraud trial on Friday , as a judge found him liable for violating state laws and penalized him nearly $355 million plus interest. In total, Mr. Trump is expected to have to pay more than $450 million.

The judge, Arthur F. Engoron, did not stop there. Along with other punishments, he also barred the former president from leading any company in the state, including portions of Mr. Trump’s family business, for three years. In doing so, he granted requests from the New York attorney general, who brought the case, accusing Mr. Trump of violating state laws by inflating his net worth in documents submitted to lenders.

Mr. Trump will appeal, and the case could take months if not years to resolve.

The Civil Fraud Ruling on Donald Trump, Annotated

Former President Donald J. Trump was penalized $355 million plus interest and banned for three years from serving in any top roles at a New York company, including his own, in a ruling on Friday by Justice Arthur F. Engoron.

But Justice Engoron’s decision could inflict immediate pain, threatening the former president’s finances and his influence over the Trump family business, known as the Trump Organization. The threat is not existential — the judge did not dissolve the company, and Mr. Trump is not at risk of bankruptcy — but the decision dealt him a serious financial blow, along with a symbolic swipe at his billionaire image.

The attorney general, Letitia James, said in a news conference Friday evening that “when the powerful break the law and take more than their fair share, there are fewer resources available for working people, small businesses and families.”

She added: “There cannot be different rules for different people in this country, and former presidents are no exception.”

Here’s what we know about how the ruling affects Mr. Trump and his empire:

How will he pay the $450 million?

Mr. Trump has 30 days to come up with the money or secure a bond.

A company providing a bond will essentially assure the State of New York that Mr. Trump has the money to pay the judgments. The bond will prevent authorities from collecting while his appeals are heard.

However, Mr. Trump must find a company willing to write the bond as he faces a wide range of legal problems, including a separate $83.3 million judgment in a recent defamation case. A bonding company will charge a premium and could demand that Mr. Trump pledge cash and other liquid assets as collateral.

In recent years, Mr. Trump has amassed a stockpile of cash, but the judge’s ruling puts that at risk. Between the defamation case judgment and the $450 million he owes after Justice Engoron’s ruling, Mr. Trump might run out of cash.

That does not mean he will run out of money. He can sell one of his properties or seek a new mortgage to raise cash.

How did the judge calculate the penalty?

Ms. James sued Mr. Trump using a powerful law that allows her to recover funds that she says were obtained through fraud.

In court papers, Ms. James cited one of her expert witnesses from the trial, who calculated that amount as about $370 million, plus interest. She argued that Mr. Trump and the other defendants had not provided a specific response to the expert’s calculations.

The judge agreed, penalizing Mr. Trump for his profit on the recent sale of two properties, as well as the interest he saved by receiving favorable loans.

What is the immediate effect on the Trump Organization?

Mr. Trump’s business could reel.

The judge barred Mr. Trump from serving as an officer or director of a New York company for three years, and his adult sons for two. One of them, Eric Trump, is the Trump Organization’s de facto chief executive, and the ruling places the leadership of the business in uncertain territory.

Justice Engoron also prohibited Mr. Trump and his company from applying for loans with banks registered in New York for three years.

And he strengthened the hand of Barbara Jones, an independent monitor he has assigned to oversee the Trump Organization, extending her appointment for three years with new authority. She has been a thorn in the side of the company and Mr. Trump’s lawyers have railed against her, saying that her work has already cost them more than $2.5 million.

The judge asked Ms. Jones to appoint an independent director of compliance as her eyes and ears, reporting to her from within the company’s ranks.

What happened to Trump’s sons?

During closing arguments last month, Justice Engoron made a comment that suggested he might spare Mr. Trump’s adult sons.

“What evidence do you have — and I just haven’t seen it — that they knew that there was fraud?” the judge asked then.

Apparently, at some point in the past few weeks he saw it. On Friday, he found that they had violated several laws while conspiring to overvalue their assets.

He wrote in his ruling that there was “sufficient evidence” that Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump had intentionally falsified business records, noting that Eric Trump provided the company’s former controller “with knowingly false and inflated valuations” for one property.

Each is on the hook for about $4 million.

What comes next?

As punishing as the judge’s ruling on Friday may have been, it was just a prelude.

On Thursday, a judge scheduled the first of Mr. Trump’s criminal trials for March 25. The Manhattan district attorney’s office has charged Mr. Trump with 34 felonies, accusing him of covering up a sex scandal that could have hurt his chances in the 2016 presidential election.

If convicted, the former president could be sentenced to up to four years in prison. And because the case was brought by state prosecutors, Mr. Trump could not pardon himself if he were to be re-elected.

Claire Fahy contributed reporting.
