PORT ORANGE, Fla. — A framed photo of serial killer Aileen Wuornos sits on the bar at The Last Resort, the place where she had her last beer. Her photo is also on bottles of hot sauce and T-shirts sold there, while an airbrushed portrait lists the seven men she killed, along with her last words. At a nearby motel, guests often ask for the room where Wuornos stayed.

Almost 22 years after her arrest and more than 10 years since her execution, the hitchhiking prostitute depicted by Charlize Theron in the 2003 movie “Monster” continues to fascinate the public. Some sympathize with her, saying the abuse she suffered as a child and later as an adult made her snap. Others are captivated by the idea of a female serial killer. Some who stop in at The Last Resort simply want to see the bar from the movie.

Al Bulling, who’s owned the tiny brick biker bar for 33 years and who appeared in “Monster,” says he’s simply honoring her last wishes. “She wanted to be remembered and keep the memory going,” he said. “Well, we’ll keep it going for her.”

A photo of serial killer Aileen Wuoronos sits on the counter at the Last Resort Bar in Port Orange, Fla. Almost 22 years after Wuornos was arrested at The Last Resort, the curious still come to the place where she had her last drink.

Michelle Forbes of New Orleans decided to visit The Last Resort after seeing the movie. “She was always a character that really fascinated me,” said Forbes.

Forbes said the bar — covered inside and out with graffiti — “is not the kind of place I would go under most circumstances.” She waited in her car until a friend joined her, but once inside, she listened to Bulling and a bartender tell stories about Wuornos for an hour.

“They were really happy to talk about it. They were really nice. They made me feel bad for cowering in the car!” Forbes said with a laugh, adding, “I do think they were trying to keep things in her spirit. I think they were honoring her, and not just making a spectacle.”

Wuornos’ life story is as lurid as her crimes. She was raped and abused growing up in Michigan. Her father committed suicide in prison and her mother abandoned her. She began selling sex at an early age and classmates shunned her. Her grandparents kicked her out at age 15 and she hitchhiked out of Michigan, eventually ending up in Florida, where she survived selling sex on the highways. She claimed she killed her first victim in self-defense after he raped her.

A burly bartender at The Last Resort who goes only by the name of Cannonball was working there the evening of Jan. 19, 1991 when Wuornos was arrested at the bar. Cannonball, who played himself in “Monster,” has told the story countless times.

“I’ve been asked some of the stupidest questions,” he said. “‘Did she act like a serial killer?’ Well hell, I don’t know. I’ve never seen one. I don’t know what they act like. And one guy asked me, ‘Well, were you scared of her?’ I ain’t never been scared of nobody.”

Wuornos wasn’t a regular customer, just someone who came in now and then, probably while hitchhiking back to what was then called the Fairview Motel, where she shared a room with her girlfriend, Tyria Moore. Cannonball said he only knew her name because she introduced herself.

Al Bulling, the owner of The Last Resort bar in Port Orange, Fla., holds a bag containing the bra worn by serial killer Aileen Wuornos, which she hung in the bar the night before her arrest.

“When they first come in she goes ‘My name is Lee and this is my girlfriend Ty and we’re gay.’ And I’m, ‘Well my name’s Cannonball and I don’t care. Pay for what you get, don’t cause me no grief and I’ll treat you square. I don’t care what anybody is,”‘ Cannonball said.

The Last Resort is a popular biker bar even without the Wuornos connection. Hank Williams Jr. mentioned the bar in the song “Daytona Nights” and some regulars have had their ashes scattered outside, beneath a live oak with battered Japanese motorcycles hanging from the limbs.

Still, Bulling is not shy about promoting the Wuornos story. The bar’s slogan is “Home of ice cold beer and killer women,” and he sold the hot sauce on eBay until the site forced him to stop, saying he was profiting from a serial killer.

Customers like to pose with the framed photo of Wuornos on the bar, and there’s also a framed and signed “Monster” movie poster. T-shirts for sale show a picture of Wuornos being arrested, and the “Crazed Killer Hot Sauce” lists her execution date under a photo that makes her look crazy. The label reads, “WARNING!! This Hot Sauce could drive you insane, or at least off on some murderous rampage. Aileen liked it and look what it did to her.”

Wuornos’ childhood friend, Dawn Botkins, who exchanged thousands of letters with Wuornos while she was on death row, is upset by all this. She says Bulling “is just using the situation that Aileen just happened to be there and all of a sudden he’s on TV saying, ‘Yup, this was her hang out.’ No it wasn’t. She just happened to be there that night.”

Botkins said she stopped by the bar with her husband Dave and told Wuornos about it during a prison visit. “I said to Dave, ‘Oh my God! He really is using and abusing her,”‘ Botkins recalled. “So I went to my next visit with Aileen and said, ‘I’m telling you, he’s got T-shirts and everything’ and she said, ‘I can’t believe that. He don’t even know me.”‘

But Bulling insists he’s not exploiting her and talks about Wuornos with respect. He said many who come by, especially women, are sympathetic toward her. “I have not had one woman in here yet, I don’t care if they were 9 or 90, that said she got what she deserved. Every woman felt sorry for her in one way or another,” Bulling said.

CHARLIZE THERON WILL EXECUTIVE-PRODUCE ‘THE CLAN’

The bar was featured in several scenes in “Monster” and prominently in the DVD special features, including a clip of Theron signing her name on the ceiling. Cannonball and Bulling are also interviewed in the DVD featurette on the making of the movie.

Bulling’s Wuornos collection includes a large, locked briefcase of court documents, police records, transcripts, photos, articles and films about Wuornos’ life, along with copies of her letters to Botkin and a sealed plastic bag containing a bra that Wuornos wore. In one of her letters, she described hanging the bra on The Last Resort ceiling the night before her arrest.

An image of serial killer Aileen Wuronos is seen on the side of a hot sauce bottle at The Last Resort bar in Port Orange, Fla.

At the motel where Wuornos often stayed, now called the Scoot Inn, owners Mike and Dawn Bock said they didn’t know about the connection until just before they signed the papers to buy it.

“It didn’t so much bother me because Aileen Wuornos didn’t do any of the killing here,” Bock said during an interview in the room Wuornos used. But he said his wife has pointed out that “there was probably some evidence at some point in time that got washed down that shower in there.”

Aside from a small photo of Wuornos on a bulletin board behind their office desk, the Bocks don’t publicize the infamous story. But when they took over, the local newspaper published an article about the new owners and the motel’s past. That day, there was a constant stream of cars pulling up in the parking lot to see it, with many people getting out to take photos.

“I personally don’t broadcast anything about it,” Bock said. “But I’m certainly not ashamed of it. If somebody brings it up and says, ‘Hey, is this the Aileen Wuornos motel?’ Then sure, then I’ll talk about it.”

Customers often ask for Wuornos’ room. It was No. 8, but the rooms have since been renumbered and it is now No. 7. Others just want photos.

“I had somebody who takes photographs of bathrooms, oddly enough, of people who were mass murderers and infamous people,” Bock said. “She didn’t take any pictures of the bedroom, she just went straight to the bathroom and started taking pictures of that.”

Last Resort bar: Aileen Wuornos arrest location

This is the bar where female serial killer Aileen Wuornos was arrested.

It is called the Last Resort bar, and it is situated at 5812 South Ridgewood Avenue in Port Orange, Florida.

Wuornos shot and killed seven men in Florida between 1989 and 1990.

Although she originally claimed that the men in question had attempted to rape her, authorities found this difficult to believe. Instead, they suspected that the true motive behind the murders was robbery, as she had pawned many of her victims' belongings.

Over the years, Wuornos changed her story a number of times. On one occasion, she said that she robbed her victims and then shot them to avoid leaving any witnesses behind.

In January 1992, she was convicted of the murder of Richard Charles Mallory and sentenced to death. In the months that followed, she also received death sentences for the other killings.

On October 9th, 2002, Wuornos was executed by lethal injection.

Aileen Wuornos' arrest

On January 9th, 1991, the police apprehended Aileen Wuornos outside of the Last Resort bar in Port Orange, Florida.

Before detectives swooped in, an undercover agent spent time with Wuornos inside the bar. While he was speaking with her, officers listened in on their conversation and videotaped the bar from across the street.

At one point, Wuornos suggested to the undercover agent that they should go out together that night. She also advised him to bring all of his money.

Realizing that he was in danger of becoming her next victim, the officer went to the restroom and told his backup team to make the arrest.

After two record-setting years, Volusia tourism weathers downturn in 2023

the last resort volusia county

DAYTONA BEACH — After two record-setting years capped by two devastating storms , Volusia County's tourism industry took a downturn in 2023, but hoteliers and industry leaders are looking ahead to the coming year with resiliency and high expectations.

A little over a year after back-to-back tropical storms ravaged the Volusia County coast, ripping apart seawalls and destroying pool decks at beachside hotels and residential homes, that resiliency is obvious to visitor Jason Scharrer.

“Since the last time we were here, this past spring, we’ve noticed the improvements in cleaning up the beach area,” said Scharrer, 50, a regular visitor to Daytona Beach for years with his family from their home in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. “Things are getting picked up and reassembled. A year ago at this time, it was borderline dangerous to walk along the beach, with all the debris.”

After two record-setting years for tourism in Volusia County that reflected Florida’s status as the first domestic tourist destination to reopen as the nation emerged from the COVID-19 pandemic, the landscape has changed — and not just because of damage from tropical storms Ian and Nicole.

The world has reopened, offering travelers new options that range from cruises to trips abroad. At the same time, Ian and Nicole pounded the destination’s key beachside hotels, parks and attractions, turning “beach access” into a coveted hotel marquee sign for months along State Road A1A.

As the area’s tourism industry adapts to those factors, the destination continues to grapple with lingering obstacles to tourism growth. In Daytona Beach, that includes the less-than inviting first impression offered around the intersection of International Speedway Boulevard and State Road A1A, the gateway to the core tourist district of the World’s Most Famous Beach.

Amid all that, Volusia County’s tourist development tax collections for the fiscal year that concluded on Sept. 30 finished 3.51% below the year-end total for 2021-22, according to figures from the Volusia County Revenue Division.

In the key Halifax beachside tourism area, collections for the year were down 5.5% compared with the previous year. It’s a period that’s characterized as a “reset year” by many in the industry here.

“We’ve had a couple of spectacular years of record-setting gains in the Daytona Beach area and we’re now seeing those levels normalize,” said Lori Campbell Baker, executive director of the Daytona Beach Area Convention & Visitors Bureau.

“These trends are being seen not only in our destination, but throughout the state of Florida and even the rest of the United States. We know that some folks are venturing beyond our destination, doing bucket-list trips abroad. But the Daytona Beach area is a special place and continues to offer great experiences and value to everyone who visits.”

Orlando, other destinations also weathered declines

Indeed, other destinations also endured periods of decline this past year.

Orange County, home to Walt Disney World, experienced five months of year-over-year monthly declines in bed-tax collections until registering a 1% monthly increase in September. Even so, the county finished the fiscal year that concluded on Sept. 30 with a record collection of $359.3 million, a 6.8% increase over the previous year.

In Brevard County, bed-tax collections for the year were up 9.5% compared with 2021-22, according to Peter Cranis, executive director of the Space Coast Office of Tourism. He credited a bus schedule of Space X launches from Cape Canaveral for boosting visitor interest in the destination.

Statewide, total tourist development tax collections for the state’s 2022-23 fiscal year, which runs July 1-June 30, were $880,908,499, a 27% decline from the $1,202,280,184 collected in 2021-22, according to Florida Department of Revenue . That represents collections by 63 counties that implement the tax out of the state's total of 67 counties.

Statewide, the tourism-marketing agency Visit Florida in November estimated that 35.066 million visitors traveled to Florida during the third quarter of 2023, 1.4% more than during the same period a year ago and 7.9% above the total in pre-pandemic 2019.

The new numbers showed a rebound from a slight second-quarter dip, which industry leaders attributed to increased competition from destinations now reopened after the pandemic.

Visit Florida also stated that Florida welcomed 105.2 million visitors during the first nine months of the year, up from 104.5 million during the same period in 2022. Florida posted a full-year record of 137.4 million tourists in 2022.

In 2023, a reset year after 'grand slam' 2022

Before the storms, Volusia County also had just capped another robust year for tourism.

For the fiscal year that concluded on Sept. 30, 2022, record-high overall tourism bed-tax collections of $33.7 million countywide were more than 20% higher than the previous year, which also set a record.

The county collects a 6% tourism tax on hotels and lodges with half of the revenues going to fund the county-run Ocean Center convention complex in Daytona Beach. The other half goes to the county’s three tourism ad authorities to market their respective areas — the Daytona Beach/Halifax area, Southeast Volusia and West Volusia — as tourist and special event destinations.

It didn’t take long for the impact of the storms to be reflected, with monthly bed tax collections for November 2022, in the wake of the storms, down 15.6% countywide compared with the same month a year earlier. In the coastal districts of Halifax and Southeast Volusia, collections for the month were down 16.5% and 22.8%, respectively.

This past summer also saw year-over-year monthly declines, with collections down 11.5% in June, part of a collective 1.76% drop for the first nine months of the 2022-23 fiscal year. More recently, the opening month of fiscal 2023-24, in October, also saw monthly numbers down by 9.7%, according to partial totals collected through mid-November, the latest figures available.

In case you missed it: In Daytona Beach, summer tourism cools compared with red-hot 2022. Why?

Although that’s not encouraging news, many hoteliers also characterize the declines as part of an expected trend as the world has reopened for travelers in the wake of the pandemic.

“We have been preparing for this leveling off as we began feeling and seeing these demand metrics,” said Jim Berkley, general manager of the 744-room Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort, the area’s largest hotel. “It’s all been expected and, frankly, many would tell you — including myself — that the correction was less painful than we had anticipated.”

That opinion was echoed by Bob Davis, president and CEO of the Lodging & Hospitality Association of Volusia County, who has watched seasons come and go for six decades as a leader of Daytona Beach’s tourism industry.

“Last year was a great grand slam,” Davis said, “but this year was better than most. I predict that next year will be better than this year, with more meetings, more conventions and a slight increase in leisure travel as people are watching their budgets.”

Group business expected to thrive in 2024

For Davis, that optimism is fueled by the arrival of a new director for the county-run Ocean Center convention center.

Lynn Flanders, who started in mid-November at an annual salary of $172,620, previously worked as assistant general manager of the Cobb-Marietta Coliseum & Exhibit Hall Authority in Atlanta. A premier meeting facility, it includes a 144,000-square-foot exhibit hall, 25,000-square-foot ballroom, a 5,500-square-foot special event space, 20 meeting rooms, and four executive board rooms.

With a range of experience that includes a familiarity with sports venues and events, Flanders is poised to elevate the destination’s appeal to event planners, Davis said.

“Put on your seat belts,” Davis told members of the Tourist Development Council, an appointed board that advises the County Council on tourism matters, “because she’s going to take you for a ride to the next level.”

Berkley, of the Hilton, also is optimistic about the prospects for group business in the coming year.

“We will be up significantly in our group business (at the Hilton) in 2024 based on our (booking) pace,” Berkley said. “Group travel has rebounded tremendously and Daytona Beach continues to be a very viable meetings and event destination, especially for the associations, sports and youth markets.”

That prediction dovetails with the broader travel industry outlook, said Scott Smith, hospitality professor and director of graduate studies at the University of South Carolina in Columbia.

Although the advent of virtual meetings has impacted corporate travel planning, the appeal of in-person gatherings has started to re-emerge as COVID fades into the rearview, Smith said.

“People now long for the days of face-to-face interaction,” said Smith, who worked as director of convention services in the early 1990s at the Daytona Marriott, the hotel that is now the 744-room beachfront Hilton.

“So even though a lot of meetings have transitioned to virtual, companies also have realized that they are not accomplishing their goals the way they would if they met in person.”

At the 212-room Shores Resort & Spa in Daytona Beach Shores, the prospect of an uptick in group business has softened the impact of a dip in leisure bookings, said Rob Burnetti, general manager.

“The group picture is more optimistic than the leisure side,” Burnetti said. “You see the demand, the phone calls coming in for group business. I think there’s a little backlog of groups that were not meeting during the pandemic.”

Daytona Aquarium among reasons for optimism in 2024

Looking ahead, tourism leaders also are optimistic about the prospect of new attractions and hotels expected to debut in the coming year.

The Daytona Aquarium & Rainforest Adventure , set to open in early 2024 in the former site of the Burlington Coat Factory store at the corner of International Speedway Boulevard and Nova Road, will feature a 110,000-gallon shark tank and 40 additional tanks with other marine life, as well as alligator, crocodile and snake habitats amid an indoor rainforest with plants and land animals.

“New exciting places to visit within the destination are always a plus for growth and developing more visitors,” said Berkley, of the Hilton.

Also keenly awaited is the grand opening of the beachfront Renaissance by Marriott Daytona Beach Oceanfront by Ormond Beach-based Premier Resorts & Management in the first quarter of 2024.

The new hotel will offer 190 guestrooms and suites, elevated dining, a pool, fitness center and over 8,000 square feet of meeting space. It represents a $45 million investment by the company to build a highly anticipated four-star resort on the site of the former Ocean Breeze Club at 640 N. Atlantic Ave. in the core tourist district.

“Daytona Beach is poised to increase room demand as the destination is upgrading its facilities and renovating its existing facilities,” said Domien Takx, Premier’s vice president of operations.

In addition to opening the new hotel, Premier is planning complete room renovations at its Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites Daytona Beach Oceanfront and Holiday Inn Express & Suites Daytona Beach Shores properties in late 2024, Takx said.

The latter hotel is still at work on pool deck repairs of damage received from Ian and Nicole, a process that has taken longer than anticipated due to factors that include environmental requirements related to turtle nesting season, Takx said.

Even so, the effects of the storms are no longer on the minds of guests arriving at the company’s hotels, he said.

“I would offer that very few travelers are avoiding our destination” due to storm-related issues, he said.

Challenge to improve core beachside tourist hub remains

As the area’s beaches rebound, the challenge to improve the experience for visitors in Daytona Beach’s core tourist hub around the Ocean Center continues to be a priority.

The destination needs to find a way to overcome its “reputation of being a low budget, economy, tired, abused town with little magnetisms outside of the newer Speedway activity,” said longtime hotelier Manoj Bhoola, president and CEO of Ormond Beach-based Elite Hospitality Inc.

Elite’s roster of area hotels includes the Ormond Beach Best Western Castillo Del Sol; the Best Western Plus International Speedway; Hampton Inn by Hilton Daytona Speedway Airport; and the Hilton Garden Inn at Daytona Beach International Airport.

This past spring, work began on a $30 million, 17-month makeover of the East ISB gateway from the Halifax River to A1A. A $9.2 million improvement project for A1A north of the ISB intersection also is funded for a projected starting date next year, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.

That work can’t be completed soon enough, said Berkley, of the Hilton.

At a recent meeting of the county’s Tourist Development Council, he said that hopes of future hotel development, new restaurants and businesses that could invigorate the core beachside area hinges on improving its appeal now to potential investors.

“The modernization of the optics of the destination is going to have to happen before anyone gets serious,” he said. “The arrival portal in our city looks worse than it has since I first started coming to Daytona in 1981. We need to stop trying to fool ourselves into thinking that’s OK.”

On a recent afternoon, several clusters of homeless people populated the Daytona Beach Bandshell behind the Ocean Walk Shoppes, where longtime anchor restaurant Sloppy Joe’s recently closed its doors after 13 years.

Hoteliers report that the homeless presence has increased since August when a U.S. District judge issued a preliminary injunction that temporarily blocked enforcement of Daytona Beach's panhandling ordinance that's been in place for four and a half years on First Amendment grounds.

Otherwise, the retail center was a virtual ghost town that afternoon, with only a handful of tourists browsing darkened windows of many closed businesses.

“They’ve got to fill the stores,” said Pat Kennell, 68, a retired police officer vacationing next door at the Wyndham Ocean Walk Resort. “Too many stores are empty. You’ve got to have places that are open.”

Generating genuine positive word-of-mouth about the destination’s appeal would amplify an effective “Beach On” marketing campaign being executed by the Daytona Beach CVB, said Rob Burnetti, general manager of The Shores Resort & Spa in Daytona Beach Shores.

“My personal feeling is that we in Daytona feel it has gotten better, but I don’t feel that message has fully reached the traveling public yet,” he said. “We’re doing what we can to get that message across, but it just hasn’t settled in to where people see that much difference in the destination.”

Local News | A year later, Volusia rebuilds but still shows scars from hurricanes Ian, Nicole

WILBUR-BY-THE-SEA — Ken Meister isn’t giving up on coastal living as work continues on his oceanfront home heavily damaged by hurricanes Ian and Nicole a year ago.

Meister is building back stronger, securing his home with 30-foot pilings and a 12-foot-high seawall. “It’s taking a lot longer than expected or we hoped, but it’s getting done,” he said.

But some of his neighbors   are selling their oceanfront properties in the wake of damage that Volusia County officials estimate at more than $850 million.

A year later, the hurricanes’ wrath is still evident in Volusia, particularly along the hard-hit stretch of sand from Daytona Beach Shores to Wilbur-by-the-Sea, an unincorporated community of about 2,000 people.

Some damaged properties look much as they did a year ago when the back-to-back storms pummeled the coastline and sent homes tumbling into the surf. One near a beach-access ramp remains split in half with its contents still exposed. A couch is perched on the second floor, while a mattress rests in a pile of debris below.

Insurance denials left many residents with huge out-of-pocket repair costs, said A.J. Rockwell, owner of Sea Level Development in New Smyrna Beach.

“It is very, very slow progress,” said Rockwell, a contractor who has been helping with the rebuilding effort. “Nobody got any insurance or any assistance. Everybody is out of pocket for all the repairs, and it is pretty substantial and unexpected.”

Storm victims throughout Florida have complained of denied insurance payouts. Roughly a third of Hurricane Ian-related claims have been rejected or remain in limbo without payment, according to a June report from the state’s Office of Insurance Regulation .

Exclusions in policies for erosion-related damage presented problems for Wilbur residents filing claims, Rockwell said.

Repairs aren’t cheap. A single dump-truck load of beach-quality sand runs about $600, Meister said.

Kate Rose grew up on Wilbur’s beaches. Facing a repair bill in excess of $500,000, she decided to put her family’s home up for sale. The house is now perched on the edge of a cliff with a steep drop.

“Our property looks very much like it did the day of the storm,” Rose said. “We haven’t been able to do anything.”

Meister hopes to have his home rebuilt by next year. Last year’s storms sent half of the house crashing into the sea. This week, workers put the finishing touches on the new seawall.

He expects the next step will be tearing down the remaining part of his house and building a new one with deep pilings to provide additional protection during future storms.

Wilbur-by-the-Sea is a slice of Old Florida along a coastline increasingly dominated by high-rise condos and hotels. Beachfront lots still command a high price, despite the hurricane risk and damaged homes still lining the beach.

One lot with a newly reinforced seawall and new septic tank is listed for $1.5 million. A 5,386-square-foot Nantucket-style oceanfront home, built in 1920, is for sale for nearly $5 million.

Progress also has been made in nearby Daytona Beach Shores, where 29 condos and hotels were declared unsafe after the back-to-back storms. Police went door to door warning residents that their tower could collapse.

Fortunately, residents and guests were cleared to return to 27 buildings within a month after Nicole, said Mayor Nancy Miller.

The two vacant buildings are the Beach Quarters, which is undergoing a major renovation, and the Lexington Inn & Suites, which is in bankruptcy, Miller said.

Much like Wilbur, some condo buildings are moving headlong into recovery, while others appear frozen in time. A year after the storm, beeping trucks and buzzing construction drills mixed with the sound of the rolling surf.

The concrete chunks that once littered the shore have been cleared, and beachgoers have returned to the sand.

While substantial progress has been made on many repairs, about half a dozen properties have been issued notices of violation because of inaction, Miller said.

“There is a great deal of improvement,” she said. “We still have a ways to go, but we’re organizing together to get that beach back to the beauty that it was previously.”

Condo dwellers have been hit with special assessments to repair their damaged seawalls, which can span from $800,000 to more than $2 million, Miller said. Those assessments are on top of rising property insurance premiums and can mean thousands of dollars in unexpected costs for residents.

Even a year after the storm, about 110 people in Volusia County are still in temporary housing, according to the Florida Division of Emergency Management.

At least 7,000 homes in Volusia County suffered flood damage, according to county officials. About 1,650 buildings sustained structural damage with 40 entirely destroyed.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency provided $103 million directly to Volusia residents for home repairs, rental assistance and other needs, along with nearly $9 million to help local governments and nonprofit organizations responding to Ian and Nicole.

The state offered more than $37 million to help Volusia County rebuild its battered beaches. State lawmakers also approved a $50 million program that will reimburse eligible property owners $150,000 for hurricane restoration projects, such as seawalls, sand placement and coastal armoring.

Some environmental advocates, though, have been critical of that program , arguing seawalls accelerate beach erosion and shouldn’t be subsidized by taxpayers.

Volusia County will receive nearly $329 million through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to assist with long-term recovery in low- and moderate-income communities.

Those funds will be used to address unmet housing needs, infrastructure projects and mitigation projects to protect against future storms, said Dona Butler, Volusia County’s new director of recovery and resiliency.

County officials estimate the area’s unmet needs exceed $804 million, but they say they will try to spend the money available as effectively as possible to cover as much of the problems as they can.

Rose won’t forget Ian and Nicole. It’s a memory that will be locked in her mind whenever a storm is menacing the coast.

“It changes the people who have been through it,” said Rose, who now lives in the Bradenton area. “I think it changes them forever.”

Last Resort Bar

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

We stopped here traveling through because I am a follower of the history of Aileen Wournos. It was not a disappointment! Along with some history I pretty much made a new family to go back and visit. I had a great time with some cool... people, and I also got some souvenirs. More

Not for everyone but an awesome dive bar. First bartender was out of her mind high on something but harmless and very nice. Its that kind of place. Outside bars with bikers who are all decent people just out for fun. Very cool place.

We stopped during Bike Week, had the usual vendors out back but we missed the creamed corn wrestling...darn it! Has a bit of history with the movie Monster, that was interesting. Glad we stopped to see the hanging tree with the foreign motorcycles. Very cool!

It is still an "iconic" Daytona biker bar for tourists who come for bikeweek and biketoberfest, I suppose it should still be considered a stop to say you have been there. I wish they would clean it up just a bit, you can still keep... the old character but still be clean. I see less and less people stopping in during events and even less when it isn't bike week as I am a local and pass by often. They used to have a bunch of vendors and events during bike week but that has also declined. I hope they consider sprucing it up soon to continue the nostalgia that it once had. More

Sometimes what a local thinks is a "must do" is, in reality a "why waste your time" Think of a really dirty bar set in a junk yard and you've got "The Last Resort"

I have been riding bikes for a lot of years and have been to "Biker Bars" all over the US. Never have I been to a tiny filthy dump like this place. Their moniker is that crazy girl who killed a bunch of horny old... men. "A Killer Bar with Killer Women" 20 years ago I would have said it was a cool bar. Now, not so much. I find it to be dirty with nothing special to offer its patrons. More

Visit the best dive bar near Daytona Beach and be sure to look at the Japanese bike hanging tree in the back.

This is a historic, run down, hole in the wall, charmer. The scene of the arrest of Aileen Wournos who was the only female mass murderer I can think of. Watch the movie Monster (with Charlize Theron) then stop in to see some of the... actual places from the real story and the movie. Just a hole in the wall biker bar, that's worth stopping through for an hour and a couple beers. No food and cash only. But an interesting place. More

I always try to find an unusual place to visit on trips. Last Resort Bar is just that place. A very small biker type bar relating to Aileen Wuornos, serial killer, who was arrested at this bar. She is featured in the movie "Monster". We... wandered out back to see the "Bike tree" where they hang rusted old bikes from. There is a stage for music. A pretty creepy place. Graffiti inside and out, so of course we added our name to it. Inside was a nifty little bar where we had a beer and chat with some patrons who knew Aileen. A place you just have to stop at to see. We loved it. A great experience P.S. don't use the bathrooms. More

My wife and I have been coming to Daytona Bike Week for over 30 years. The Last Resort is a must stop at least once probably more during the week. It is truly a Daytona Biker Bar (not a restaurant). It is old and crude,... not your Yuppie biker bar. It has everything a real Biker Bar needs, cold beer, strong drinks, and cool atmosphere. Be sure to visit the vendors out back, especially "Doobie" and get one of his one of a kind ink drawings depicting the Last Resort Bike Week history for the year. More

Cool place to stop during bike week. A lot of history. Cold beer and friendly people. Make sure to go out back. Cool t-shirts as well. Got to meet a cool guy from Buffalo Ny that had an old Shovel head bike. Just a great... time. More

Awesome biker bar. Al is awesome and they filmed some of the movie Monster here with Charlize Theron and Christina Ricci.

A bike week favorite, worth a visit, although a smaller venue compered to the cabbage patch or iron horse

If you like Harley Davidsons and are into Motorcycle's and the lifestyle. This is the place you want to be.

Even though the weather has been bad the first part of bike week everyone has been happy Great service and cold beer. You must stop by the Last Resort Bar
