How the Career Center Can Help You Find a Job

Chico State Career Center

By Jodie Rettinhouse, Career Center Advisor

We’re the Career Center. Simply put, we help students and alumni get career positions and internships. Here are a few reasons to check us out:

We do resume and cover letter reviews. Writing a quality resume is the first step in a successful job search. Our friendly career advisers will help you edit and format your resume and cover letters.

We do mock interviews—and coordinate real ones.   You can practice your interview skills by doing a pretend interview with us. And did you know that real employers come to the Career Center and conduct real interviews for real career positions and real internships? It’s true. Really ! You can find out how to sign up for these interviews at the Career Center.

We’re connected. We have an exclusive (just for Chico State students/alumni) job database we call JOBCAT, and we stay connected with students via Facebook, Twitter, and Linked-In. And next time you’re on campus, be on the lookout for the Job Mob — it’s another way we stay connected with our peeps.

We host fun, educational events. From career fairs and workshops to our very popular etiquette dinner, we host multiple events each year. And yes, students DO tell us our events are educational and fun!

We know how to help those who don’t know. Are you confused about what major and/or career path to choose? We can help! As a starting point, we may suggest our new, online career assessment , FOCUS2. It’s free!

We help with grad school applications. We know the ins and outs of the sometimes-confusing grad school app process. We can help you set a timeline and review your application materials.

We welcome students of all majors, seeking all types of occupations.   If you’ve checked out our services and don’t see programs that seem to fit your needs, stop by or give us a call. We’d love to help you with your specific career plans.

We’re easy to find. Stop by SSC 270, call us at 898-5253, e-mail us at [email protected] or check out our website: www.csuchico.edu/careers .

See you soon in the Career Center!

Writing a Curriculum Vitae

Checklist for Writing a CV (PDF) CV Tips Evaluating your CV Sample CV (PDF)

What is a Curriculum Vitae?

In the United States, a curriculum vitae, often called a CV or vitae is used when applying for academic and research positions, fellowships, and grants.

Note: The term CV is also used in many foreign countries to describe a résumé. Keep in mind, overseas employers often expect to receive personal information that would not be included on a U.S. résumé such as a photo, place of birth, nationality, gender, number of dependents, and marital status.

A CV is longer than a résumé (at least two pages) and represents your accomplishments, areas of expertise, and professional skills in a detailed and organized manner. It is best to discuss any special CV formatting your field may require with a mentor or trusted member in your department (i.e., faculty member or adviser). As with a résumé, you may need different versions of a CV for different types of positions.

Vitae Categories

A CV is a summary of your educational and academic background as well as teaching, research, and service/engagement experience, publications, presentations, honors and awards, affiliations, and other details. Include the categories below which best highlight your experience.

Application Corner: 7 MBA Resume Tips

Women Works on Resume in Cafe

An MBA resume is a lot like the document you've prepared for every job you’ve sought in your career, but that doesn't mean it's all right to submit a boilerplate document as part of your business school application. Each resume you submit should be crafted and pitched toward a specific opportunity, and MBA program admissions committees will want to see you represent yourself well in both professional and educational contexts.

Writing a resume is a unique challenge, whether it's for an MBA application or any other purpose. While it can be tricky to promote your accomplishments without sounding boastful, it's important to give yourself the credit you deserve in a concise, compact, professional format. Read our seven-step guide to creating a winning MBA resume, and consider how the right layout and content might improve your chances for admission to your target MBA program.

1. Start your layout from scratch.

Resume templates typically are a one-size-fits-all solution to developing a resume, but your document will only have impact if it stands out from the crowd. Make your first impression on your evaluators a powerful one with attention to visual detail.

A sloppy, overly busy, or bland design can be initially off-putting to your reader. A strong resume will be organized clearly with visually delineated sections; legible, modern fonts; consistent alignment; and a healthy balance between text and white space.

2. Speak to your audience.

While your experience and accomplishments may not change, the way you frame them should be different for each resume you create. Try to strike a balance between academic and professional achievements on your MBA resume. Your admissions committee will want to see that you not only have the drive to advance at work and in your career, but the aptitude and focus to succeed in the classroom. Be sure to include any academic honors you think may be most relevant in this context.

3. Keep it current.

MBA admissions committees are interested in who you are today, and how all your experiences and skills have helped you develop into a perfect candidate. Emphasize your current role and go into the greatest depth when discussing your current responsibilities, as well as any achievements and advancement you may have enjoyed in your present job.

Some MBA programs, such as the Online MBA program at California State University, Chico, do not require professional experience to apply . If this is the case for you—if you're applying as you complete your undergraduate studies or shortly thereafter—be sure to highlight elements of your academic achievement and course of study that indicate your drive to succeed professionally.

4. Be aware of any gaps.

Your resume reader will likely understand that sometimes life intervenes and creates some bumps in an otherwise smooth employment narrative. If this is the case, there's no need to belabor it on your resume itself, but you should be ready to discuss any gaps in your experience clearly and confidently in another context. The most likely places in which this would occur during the MBA application process would be an admissions interview or in your personal statement .

5. Emphasize applicable outside interests.

Not every notable achievement occurs in the classroom or the workplace. For example, if you take part in an activity like volunteering or community service that you believe is pertinent to your goals and emblematic of your character, don't hesitate to include it. It might be just the detail your readers need to understand who you really are.

6. Choose an appropriate length.

The standard length for a resume has long been one full page, and that generally is a good guide. However, if you have accrued enough relevant experience over the course of your academic and professional career, you can expand to two pages to paint a fuller picture on your MBA resume. Be honest, however, and don’t pad the content to expand your document’s length; your readers will see right through that.

7. Proofread carefully (and ask for assistance).

Appropriate grammar and error-free content go a long way toward framing you as a detail-oriented professional and prospective student. When you think your document is complete, read it over once again to catch any lingering issues and to ensure it is easy to read and follow. And because fresh eyes can never hurt, ask a trusted friend or colleague to give it a final proofread as well. They may provide extremely helpful feedback that you would not have thought of on your own.

Put Your Resume to Use at Chico State

By following this guide, you should be well on your way to crafting a document that will wow the readers in the College of Business at Chico State when you apply to the Online MBA program. Your tailored, unique resume will be a true asset, particularly if you intend to pursue a specialization in Enterprise Information Systems or Project Management.

Resume Tips

  • Share This: Share Resume Tips on Facebook Share Resume Tips on LinkedIn Share Resume Tips on X

Follow these tips to create an effective resume!

Tip 1: Start from a blank document – no templates!

You may be tempted to use a template since much of the formatting work is done for you. You simply need to plug in your own information into the document and, voila! , instant resume. However, templates have a few problems:

  • They are not unique.
  • They are difficult to reformat.
  • They are not tailored for your goals. A resume template may not include all the sections or be in the order that best reflects your unique experience. Consider using one of the CMC’s 15+ resume samples as a model for formatting and style!

Tip 2: Build a strong Professional Profile highlighting your most compelling, relevant qualifications.

Rather than an objective statement, use the first portion of your resume to sell your reader on how you can benefit them , by summarizing how you are qualified for the role. To create a strong profile, consider how your skills and background relate to the position. Identify 4-6 bullets that illustrate how you match the qualifications the position requires. Show your reader how you used a particular skill or achieved something, don’t just list your strengths.

Consider the difference between these two profiles, both for the same person:

resume help csu chico

Providing evidence that illustrates how you’ve successfully used a skill makes for a stronger profile and helps your reader envision how you would employ those same skills in a new role.

Tip 3: Include your CSU education first in your education section, and list it correctly.

Undergraduate:

Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO MM/20YY Bachelor of Science, Business Administration GPA 3.5 Concentration: Finance & Marketing

resume help csu chico

Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO MM/20YY Master of Business Information GPA 3.5

* Students pursuing public accounting careers have unique education section components. See the Public Accounting Sample Resume as a guide.

Tip 4: Items within each section should be listed in reverse chronological order (most recent / present experiences first).

Consider creating a “Related Experience” section, which would allow you to combine relevant experiences from multiple areas of your resume (e.g., internships, volunteering, projects, etc.) into one, highly targeted section!

resume help csu chico

Helpful Hint: Limited Work Experience ?

Haven’t had a formal job yet? That’s okay! Try to think about experience more broadly than just as paid, formal work. Maybe you worked odd-jobs in your community—that’s experience! Maybe you helped with a family business, volunteered, were a student athlete—that’s all experience! Paid or unpaid, whatever experiences you’ve had that allowed you to demonstrate or hone skills and knowledge, that is the kind of content you can include on your resume.

Tip 5: What to include in your experience section

Include basic details of all employment/internships:

  • Company name
  • Location (city and state)
  • Dates of employment (Month Year—Month Year / Present)
  • Describe the relevant details of your experience in bulleted statements (See Tip 6!)

Tip 6 : Write Strong Bulleted Statements

Beyond listing the basics of your work experiences, describe what you did in each role. You’ll do this by writing bulleted statements (2-6 per experience). To start, generate a list of your duties, as well as moments of pride. From there, see how you can transform your list into persuasive and descriptive statements, showcasing your relevant skills and accomplishments . A “formula” you can reference to help you craft strong bullet statements is:

resume help csu chico

Action Verb + Task / Skill + Result / Purpose

resume help csu chico

Using this formula can help you migrate simple statements like “operated a cash register” or “provided customer service”, to:

  • Managed daily reporting for a busy department store to ensure adherence to procedure for accurate handling of funds
  • Outperformed monthly quota for warranty sales 11 out of 12 months
  • Communicated promotions and answered all questions for customers to secure return visits

Focus on what you uniquely brought to the role, based on your skill set. Think about what you accomplished and how you achieved those outcomes. When possible, quantify information to help illustrate your impact and abilities. As you’re writing, remember to omit first-person pronouns (e.g., I, me), vary your word choice , and be specific!

Tip 7: Round out your resume by incorporating additional experiences and sections.

You’ve probably done a lot, in addition to school and work—and those extracurricular experiences can also be included on your resume! Provide context and details here, as it makes sense, just as you’ve done in your experience section and bullet statements. Possible other section headers and content you might include on your resume are:

resume help csu chico

Tip 8: Do not include references’ information or “References Available Upon Request”.

References are professional contacts who can serve to provide credibility for your work ethic, strength of character, people skills, and various achievements. Even with a limited scope of employment, you can request references from any number of people, even if you have not worked for them in an employer-employee relationship. Potential references can be faculty members that have worked closely with you, leaders from volunteer experiences, supervisors from a summer job, or anyone in a leadership role from a club / organization you’ve been a part of.

Tips to ensure quality references:

  • Only send references when you’re prompted for them; follow the specific application instructions closely.
  • Create a separate document for your references using the same header and font as your resume.
  • Always ask your references if they are willing to serve as a reference for you as well as for their current and preferred contact information. The chances of getting a good reference are higher when the person has time to prepare what they will say about you!
  • Make sure your references are in a position to provide you with a strong, positive reference.
  • Assist your reference by sharing your resume, cover letter, and the job description. It is okay to give them some prompting that expresses what you hope they might say!
  • Ensure that you inquire early in the process about what type of reference the employer is seeking. Typically, employers will either request a name of someone to speak with or a formal letter of recommendation. ( In case of a letter of recommendation, it helps your reference if you give them at least one month’s notice ahead of the application deadline. )
  • Be sure to follow-up to thank your references and keep them updated on your progress!

Tip 9: Target your resume

Resumes are self-marketing tools; they market the product ( YOU! ) to the target audience ( the role / organization you’re seeking ). You must know your audience and customize your resume to your reader to be effective . To help you understand the required qualifications, what keywords to infuse, and which experiences and knowledge to focus on:

resume help csu chico

Target your resume toward your goal by only including the most relevant information. This may mean omitting parts of your background. This may mean creating multiple versions of your resume. And this definitely means reviewing your resume and making updates, rearranging sections, and/or modifying language and keywords before applying to each and every position!
