3. File your EI reports

Question & Answer

Every 2 weeks you need to file a report to get your EI benefits.

Shortly after you apply for EI, you will receive a letter with a 4-digit code you can use to file your report online.

If you don't have access to the internet, you can call 1-800-531-7555 to file your reports over the phone. You can also fill out a paper report and mail it into Service Canada

In these reports you must say if you:

  • worked and, if so, how much you earned
  • received any other money
  • were sick or injured
  • were available for work each weekday

For example, you need to set out any work or training you did and any other reasons that you might be unavailable for work. You must report any work you do and any money that you earn. Report any work you do in the week you worked, even if you have not yet been paid.

You can be fined for knowingly giving false information to Service Canada staff or knowingly hiding information, so make sure your reports are complete and accurate.

You will not get any benefits unless you file these reports.

Special benefits

When you apply for special benefits, you can choose to not send in reports every two weeks. If you choose not to send reports, you must agree to tell Service Canada staff if you:

  • do any work,
  • earn any money, or
  • have any reason why you should not keep getting benefits.

EI Reporting: What Is It and How To Fill Out Your Report?

' src=

Are you a Canadian citizen who has recently started working? If so, you’ll need to know how to fill out your EI report. EI reporting is required bi-weekly and it’s how you can tell Service Canada the number of benefits you should receive. But filling out your report can be tricky, so I’ll walk you through the process and provide some tips to make everything easier.

Without further ado, let’s get right to it!

What Is an EI Report in Canada

What Is an EI Report in Canada?

An Employment Insurance (EI) report is a bi-weekly report that you’re required to submit to Service Canada and the Government of Canada. The purpose of Canada’s EI reporting is for employed, self-employed, and unemployed residents to provide information about their work and earnings. Then, they will use these details to determine whether you’re eligible for benefits.

The EI provides relief and is a viable replacement for primary income for several categories of workers, such as:

  • People who can’t work due to pregnancy or sickness
  • People who took leave to care for a newborn or adopted child
  • People with a critical illness or injury
  • People who are a caregiver for a critically ill family member
  • People who were employed in insurable employment
  • People who lost their jobs because of COVID-19 or natural disasters
  • People who haven’t had a salary for 7 consecutive days in the last 52 weeks
  • People who are capable of working every day
  • People who can prove they’ve been actively seeking work

Therefore, if you’re receiving benefits, you need to send a report every two weeks to prove that you’re still eligible for the next round of payments. You can do this in three ways:

  • By using EI online reporting through the reporting portal website which you can access via your My Service Canada Account
  • By using the Telephone Reporting Service and calling the EI reporting number (1-800-531-7555)
  • By sending it in the mail

Unsurprisingly, the fastest and most efficient way of sending in your report is by using EI Internet reporting. But before you start filling out your statements, you’ll need to keep a few things in handy, like:

  • Your Social Insurance Number (SIN)
  • A stable internet connection
  • Your residential address and postal code
  • Your banking credentials
  • Your employer’s name, address, and phone number
  • Your salary before tax for the last week you worked
  • Your Access code you received via mail

So what exactly should you write on your bi-weekly EI online report? Well, it should contain the following information:

  • Dates and hours you’ve worked
  • Your earnings before any deductions
  • Hours you’ve spent at school or training
  • Any training allowance you’ve received or have yet to receive
  • Whether you were available for work
  • Other money you’ve received or have yet to receive

How To Fill Out Your EI Report in Canada?

Now for the juicy details, how should you fill out your report? I’ve broken up the process into nine simple steps to ensure easy comprehension and a smooth procedure.

Step 1: Enter the reporting portal

The first thing you’ll need to do is enter the internet reporting service for your EI. An alternative to googling the portal is using your My Service Canada login. It will take you to a page that allows you to submit your online report by providing your SIN, access code, and province. You can also do an EI status check through the same app.

Step 2: Read everything carefully

Next, you’ll be greeted with a page that offers relevant information about the EI report. Make sure to read everything carefully and familiarize yourself with the instructions before proceeding. Consequently, this will help ensure that you complete the report accurately.

Step 3: Provide your postage information

On the next page, you’ll be asked whether you’ve changed your mailing address or banking information for Direct Deposit purposes. You can click either “No” or “Yes” depending on your circumstance. If you have changed your information, you’ll need to provide your new details to ensure EI reporting services can send you your payment.

Step 4: State whether you’ve left the country

Now, you’ll be asked whether you’ve left the country during the last two weeks. You must tell the government which days you didn’t work to avoid overpayment you’ll need to repay. Accordingly, you can select “No” or “Yes.” If you did leave Canada, you’ll need to provide the relevant information, such as how many days you were away.

Step 5: Indicate whether you’re self-employed and state your income

The next page will ask you whether you’re self-employed. If yes, you will need to provide your work and income details. Additionally, you’ll see another question on the same page, asking you whether you’ve worked or received any earnings during the period of the EI report, including unpaid work, farming, etc.

Step 6: Indicate whether you’re at school or training

Here, you’ll need to fill in details regarding any schooling or training you’ve undertaken during the week and note the amount of allowance you received. This is also a “Yes” or “No” question, so you should answer accordingly and follow further instructions.

Step 7: State your work availability

This section of the report requires you to indicate whether you’ve been available to work during your EI weekly report and were just unable to find a job. Therefore, if you were sick or taking care of someone ill, you’ll need to mention that here.

Step 8: State whether you have other money

Finally, the last section will present you with a “Yes” or “No” question, asking you if there’s any other money you haven’t already reported. This payment can be related to employment or anything else you might have missed, like wage-loss insurance and worker’s compensation benefits.

Step 9: Verify your answers

Once you have completed all the sections of the EI online report, you’ll be given a chance to review your answers. For your convenience, all your answers will be listed, so you’ll need to make sure they’re correct and you haven’t misclicked. Once you click “I Accept”, the service will submit your report and you won’t be able to change anything.

When Should You Submit Your EI Report?

As I briefly mentioned, EI reporting in Canada is done every two weeks. If this isn’t your first time filling out the report, you can check your last confirmation notice to discover the date on which you can file your next report. Processing usually occurs from Sunday to Thursday and your payment should arrive in about two or three days, provided there aren’t any holidays.

In addition, note that you can’t file your report before the date indicated on your confirmation notice. However, you can send the report within three weeks after your due date . If you miss sending it in during that time, your Employment Insurance benefits may be affected, so keep an eye out for that.

In short, EI reporting is required for anyone receiving Employment Insurance in Canada. To avoid any problems, it’s essential to fill out your report with detailed information about your employment and income and submit it when specified.

Happy filing!

If you don’t submit your EI report, you won’t receive any employment benefits.

You can find your EI report by logging into your My Service Canada Account, where you have all the details about your benefits. If you don’t have an account, you should create one and keep up-to-date on your reports.

If you filed your EI report online on a Friday or Saturday, you will generally receive the money after 2 or 3 business days, so either Monday or Tuesday. However, if you filed by mail, it might take longer for you to get paid.

Employment Insurance is considered taxable income, so you’d need to report your benefits on your tax return and might be asked to repay some of them. For example, if your income was over $70,375, you’ll have to repay 30% of your net income or the total regular benefits, depending on which one is less.

To claim EI, you will need at least 420 hours of insurable employment in the last year.

Service Canada may review your EI application for over 4 weeks, thus you will be without any income for up to a month or longer.

The most convenient way to submit your EI reports is through the  EI Internet Reporting Service . You can also use the EI Telephone Reporting Service at 1-800-531-7555 or complete a paper report.

How to Log In to EI Internet Reporting

Go directly to this Government of Canada EI internet reporting webpage and enter your Social Insurance Number (SIN) and your Access Code to log in.

Verify that you haven’t moved homes or changed your banking direct deposit information. Click No.

Answer whether you were outside Canada during the two-week period. Click No.

Note: Normally, you cannot receive EI for days you are out of the country. For example, if you took a long weekend in Florida, spending two weekdays out of Canada, you will be docked two days pay on your next EI payment. Keep in mind as well that I have heard that Service Canada works with the Canada Border Services Agency to catch cheaters.

First, answer whether you are self-employed. Click No.

Next, answer if you “worked or received any earnings during the period of this report? This includes work for which you will be paid later, unpaid work, self-employment including farming”. Click No.

Answer whether you attended school or a training course during the period of this report? Click No.

Note: You are not entitled to EI if you are in school unless you are approved an exemption (see the program here ).

Answer whether you were you ready, willing and capable of working each day? Click Yes.

Note: “ Ready, willing and capable” means you were available for work if it were offered to you. You must be “ready, willing and capable” at all times for continued EI eligibility.

Answer whether you did or will receive any other money during this period? Answer No.

Note: If you are on SUB plan with your employer, do not include those earnings as money received here.

Note: The EI regime is concerned with “earnings” and “benefits”, not simply “money;” not all “monies” are deducted from EI. (see the Employment Insurance Act here ). This question is therefore designed to catch people with “earnings” and “benefits”, not gifts and loans etc.

You will be brought to a webpage confirming every answer you provided above. After confirming each one, at the bottom right of the page, Click I Accept.

EI Online Reporting: How To Fill EI Report Online (2024)

Adeola Adegoke

The Employment Insurance (EI) benefit offers financial support to working Canadians who lose their jobs through no fault of their own for up to 52 weeks of unemployment. Once you have passed the eligibility criteria and received approval for employment insurance benefits, you must continue to submit your biweekly reports to show that you are still eligible to receive the benefits.

You can submit a paper report at any Service Canada office, use the phone reporting system, or use the employment insurance internet reporting portal. However, it’s essential to note that the eI internet reporting service is the most popular and convenient method for filing your EI report.

In this blog post, we will answer all your questions regarding the EI online reporting service and guide you through the process of completing your EI report online.

What is EI?

Employment Insurance (EI) is Canada’s biggest income replacement program that aims to help Canadians who lost their jobs because of no fault of theirs by providing them with financial support while they are out of work for up to 52 weeks.

Also known simply as employment insurance, EI provides temporary income support to those who are unemployed and actively engaged in a job search or upgrading their skills. To qualify, individuals must have paid premiums and met the required minimum insurable hours.

The disbursement and approval of these benefits are governed by the Employment Insurance Act. This Act determines the qualifying amount based on factors such as your income details, the number of insurable hours accrued, and whether you have recently received EI benefits. Your eligibility for employment insurance benefits is contingent upon these considerations.

How The Employment Insurance Canada Online Reporting Works

To access the benefits provided by the Employment Insurance Program, you may choose to apply for EI online by completing an online application through Service Canada.

This includes telling Service Canada about your employment history, training, education, and other factors that may help you qualify for EI benefits. There is a waiting period of two weeks before you can get your first benefit.

Subsequently, you need to continue filing your employment insurance report every two weeks to inform Service Canada your employment condition hasn’t changed and that you are still eligible to receive future benefits.

If you worked during the two weeks you are filling for, you must state the hours you worked and the total amount you got or would get before deductions.

How To Submit Your Report

During your application for EI benefits, Service Canada mailed you a benefit statement with a 4-digit access code. You will submit reports using this code and your Social Insurance Number (SIN).

You can submit your reports by Internet or telephone. Internet Reporting Service is faster, simpler, more convenient, and more secure.

However, if you don’t have access to the internet, you can use the Telephone Reporting Service. Call 1-800-531-7555 to process your report.

Also, if you cannot submit your report online or by telephone, you can mail a paper report to Service Canada.

If you made a mistake on a report you have already submitted, you could quickly modify your report before submitting it when you send it by telephone or the Internet. Contact Service Canada as soon as possible so you don’t risk being overpaid and having to repay benefits.

Before You Submit Your Report

Before you start filling your report with the EI internet reporting service, it’s crucial to take note of these cautions:

  • Incomplete Reports: If you disconnect or exit the report prematurely, your information won’t be saved, requiring you to start over.
  • Missing Information: Reports with missing information cannot be processed. Ensure all necessary details are at your fingertips before commencing your report.
  • Session Duration: To avoid disconnection, refrain from staying on one page for over 10 minutes. Never leave your computer unattended while logged in to your online report.
  • Ending Your Session: Click “Log Out” to conclude your session once you’ve finished your report.
  • Browser Cache: Remember that your browser automatically saves visited web pages. Safeguard your account information by clearing your browser’s cache after each session.
  • Troubleshooting “Error 404”: If you encounter an “error 404” message during login, troubleshoot by clearing your browser’s cache, deleting cookies, or trying another browser. For Internet Explorer users, ensure ‘Compatibility View’ is turned off by checking the Tools menu on the Login page. If it’s on, click to remove the check mark and turn it off.

How To Access The EI Report Online

After applying for benefits, you’ll receive an EI benefit statement by mail. This statement contains your access code (a 4-digit number located in the shaded area at the top of the statement). To submit reports and access information about your claim, you’ll need both the access code and your Social Insurance Number (SIN).

You must keep your access code secure and store it separately from your SIN. By providing and submitting your SIN and access code, your online report will be considered signed.

What You Need To Report

For each report, you must indicate the following:

Work and Earnings

If you are currently employed or earning income while on EI, you are still eligible to collect benefits; however, it is imperative to report this information. The required details for your EI report include:

  • The days you worked
  • The number of hours worked
  • Phone numbers for employers
  • Total earnings before deductions for each reporting week

Always report your actual earnings before any deductions. Failure to do so may result in the need to repay some or all of the funds received. Additionally, report earnings during the specific week(s) in which they were earned.

For instance, if you worked during a particular week but will receive payment later, report the hours worked during that specific week, not when you receive the payment. Reporting earnings should be based on each calendar week (Sunday to Saturday).

  • Round earnings to the nearest dollar (e.g., $125.49 becomes $125, while $125.50 becomes $126).
  • Only report full hours worked during each calendar week (Sunday to Saturday). For instance, if you worked 38 hours and 45 minutes, enter 38 hours.
  • If you commence full-time work, specify the start date. Report all employment, whether it is for someone else or self-employment.

Note: There is a reporting calendar that can help you keep track of hours and earnings to make it easier to fill your report. You must report hours and earnings from any job, including self-employment.

If you attended school or training, please report the number of hours spent in training and the amount of any training allowance received. Exclude allowances related to living away from home, commuting, travel, or dependent care.

Availability

You will encounter the following question: “Were you ready, willing, and capable of working each day, Monday through Friday, during each week of this report?”

If, for any reason (e.g., illness, injury, vacation), you were not available for work or not actively seeking employment, respond with a “no.” Specify the days you were unavailable. Additionally, report any instances of leaving Canada during the reporting period.

How to Fill Your EI Report Online (A Step-by-Step Guide)

If you are an employment insurance claimant, you must complete an EI report every two weeks. The report confirms your job search for the past two weeks. The reports are used to calculate how much money you will receive every two weeks.

Filing your EI report online is relatively straightforward if you have all the necessary information. The following steps will guide you through the process:

Step 1: Signup or Login to the EI Internet Reporting Portal

EI Online Reporting Step 1

To file your EI report online, you must first sign up or log into the EI Internet reporting portal .

The reporting portal is a web-based application that allows you to complete, submit and view the result of your EI report online.

You’ll need to enter your SIN, access code, and the province of residence; then, you go ahead and log in.

Step 2: Go Through The Acceptance Statement

EI Online Reporting Step2

After logging in, you’ll be taken to a page with all the information you need to complete the report.

Analyze the data, double-check the dates and frequency of filing, and then click the “I accept” option.

Before continuing, it is essential that you read over all of the information presented.

Step 3: Update The Postal and Direct Deposit Information

EI Online Reporting Step3

The postage and direct deposit page will open after clicking the ‘I accept’ button. Remember that choosing direct deposit is the right choice, as you will get your funds within two business days after the mandatory waiting period of 2 weeks.

Click No or Yes as it applies to you concerning your address. Click “No” if you’ve not changed your address and kept the direct deposit details they used to pay you the last payment. Click “Yes” to enter your new address.

You must always update your account and supply Service Canada with the most up-to-date information to ensure your next EI payment arrives promptly.

Before proceeding to the next step, you must confirm your decision by clicking “I Accept.”

Step 4: Provide Information About You Leaving The Country

EI Online Reporting Step4

This page will ask you to provide information about your leave of absence from the country.

If you leave the country during the period you are entitled to benefits, the government will not pay for those days.

If you lie, you may face criminal charges, so be honest about where you were. Be sure to click ‘continue’ after filling out this information.

Step 5: Update Work and Wages Information If You Are Self-Employed

EI Online Reporting Step5

On this page, you will be required to answer these two questions:

  • Do you have your own business?
  • During the reporting period, did you work or earn any income? This covers paid and unpaid labour and self-employment, such as farming.

Click “Yes” or “No” as it applies to you.

In the case of self-employment, you will have to provide relevant payment and work details. Income from self-employment, including home-based gigs , part-time work , and side hustles , will impact your benefits.

When reporting income, it’s critical to remember to include the pre-tax earnings approximated to the latest dollar number.

If you’ve just started a new job and haven’t yet been paid, add your hourly rate to your total hours.

Step 6: Provide Information On School or Training Attendance

EI Online Reporting Step6

On this page, you will be required to provide two pieces of information:

Please click “Yes” if you attended or completed a school, trade school, or training program to provide the following information:

  • The number of hours you spent training or attending school
  • Your compensation, excluding commute costs, relocation expenses, and dependent allowances

Step 7: Demonstrate Your Availability To Work

EI Online Reporting Step7

The government will only pay you for a legitimate cause. You must demonstrate you are willing, competent, and available to work but cannot find employment.

By selecting ‘Yes,’ you assure the government that you were ready to work throughout the reporting period. That proves you weren’t at fault for being unemployed.

Also, you should update the availability tab of your schedule if you were not available during a working day because of caregiving or illness.

Step 8: Declaration of Monies from Other Sources

EI Online Reporting Step8

Please be truthful with the government about any additional money you received during the reporting period.

If you received any additional money throughout the week that is relevant to your job and you forgot or neglected to indicate it earlier, you must include it here.

These earnings may include Group wage-loss insurance,   social income assistance , and worker’s compensation benefits .

You can choose “No” and continue if you haven’t received any qualifying income. If you have, you must supply information about the income, including the sum, the payer, and the kind of payment.

Step 9: Final Confirmation Statement

reporting services ei

Once you have answered this question, you will have the opportunity to review all your answers before clicking ‘I accept’ to confirm they are accurate.

When you click “I accept,” you won’t be able to change anything once your report has been submitted, so please take your time on this page.

Then once you accept, you’ll receive an email confirming your report and the date of your subsequent reporting.

When To Submit Your Next Report

When you submit your report, you will immediately be given the date for your next report. Mark this date on your calendar.

You cannot submit your report before this due date, but you have three weeks from this due date to submit your next report.

Ask For An Exemption From Reporting

As an EI beneficiary, you can choose to be exempted from reporting if you meet certain conditions. You can request an exemption at any time during your benefit period or cancel it at any time.

During the benefits application process, you can agree to this exemption. You can choose to be exempted if:

  • you are enrolled in a training program for apprentices
  • paternal, maternity, or caregiver benefits are being paid to you
  • a work-sharing contract applies to you

However, if you’re exempt and your circumstances change, you must immediately inform the EI program by completing the report.

If you don’t report, you may not receive your benefits until a review is done. This means there will be a delay before you receive your money again.

If a review shows that you were not eligible to be exempt, you may have to repay some of the benefits you received.

What You Need to Apply for Employment Insurance Online

To fill out your EI report online, you will need the following:

  • a reliable internet connection
  • your Social Insurance Number (SIN)
  • Your access code . You will need to get your Access code via mail, not online. If you lose your access code, you will need to contact Service Canada at 1-800-206-7218 or visit one of its offices
  • your province of residence information
  • your banking information if you elect to receive your benefits through direct deposit
  • your address and your postal code if it has changed since the last report
  • details of extra allowances, tips, commissions, and income
  • you may also register for your My Service Canada Account

How Long After EI Report Do You Get Paid?

Once you have successfully completed your Employment Insurance (EI) report, the processing time for payment largely depends on the method you have chosen for receiving your funds.

Typically, individuals who have chosen direct deposit can expect their EI payments to be deposited into their bank accounts within 2 to 3 business days after the completion of the report.

How Do I Check My EI Status?

Checking the status of your Employment Insurance (EI) application is a straightforward process through the My Service Canada Account (MSCA).

Once you have applied for EI benefits, Visit the My Service Canada Account portal and log in using your credentials. Once logged in, select the option that says “View my claim status and message.”

In the designated section, you’ll find details such as your EI claim status, specifics about your claim, and any messages you may have received from the authorities.

Is EI Paid Weekly or Biweekly?

Once you’ve received your initial Employment Insurance (EI) payment, subsequent payments are made on a biweekly basis. You can choose to receive your payments either through direct deposit or by mail cheque.

For those utilizing direct deposit, payments are typically deposited into your bank account every two weeks.

If you opt for receiving payments by mail cheque instead of direct deposit, it’s important to note that this method may result in slightly longer processing times. In such cases, additional days, ranging from a few days to a week, may be needed for postal delivery, potentially causing a delay in receiving your EI payment.

How Long Does It Take EI To Make A Decision?

The timeframe for Employment Insurance (EI) to reach a decision on your application is generally around 28 days from the date of your application submission. This applies if you meet the eligibility criteria and have furnished all the necessary information. Upon a positive decision, you can expect to receive your initial payment within this period.

Why Is My EI Payment Late?

There could be a few reasons why your EI payments may be delayed, and here are some common ones to consider:

  • If you haven’t submitted all the necessary documents, it might be causing a delay in processing your EI payment.
  • You might not be eligible for EI benefits, leading to a delay in payment. It’s crucial to ensure you meet all the eligibility criteria.
  • Problems with your bank account, such as incorrect details or issues on the bank’s end, could contribute to a delay in receiving your EI payment.
  • If you receive your payments by mail, issues with postal services or incorrect mailing information may be causing the delay.

Final Thoughts on EI Online Reporting

You must complete your report for each benefit period as quickly as possible. When you complete a report, the system will tell you when to submit the next one.

If you forget to complete and submit your EI report form on time, it’s essential that you file it as soon as possible.

You may not receive payment for a reporting period if you miss the deadline to submit your report. To check the status of your claim, you can log in to your Service Canada Account.

What Should I Do if the EI Internet Reporting System is Down?

Use the EI reporting phone number: 1-800-531-7555.

The EI Online Reporting website is available 24 hours, seven days a week. However, routine maintenance may cause the system to go down occasionally. You can check the EI website or the @CitImmCanada on Twitter for notices and updates on when the system will be inaccessible.

You can also try to log into the EI Internet Reporting System at a different time to determine if it is an intermittent problem with your internet connection.

Can I Be Denied EI Benefit After I Was Approved?

Yes! You may be denied EI benefit even though you may have been initially approved and made a claim successfully in the past few weeks.

EI Eligibility is reassessed continually, and you must always demonstrate your eligibility before you can benefit from the EI program.

One of the reasons you may be denied EI is if it can be proven that you are not actively seeking employment or if you left your part-time employment for no good reason.

You may also be denied EI if you made much money from your side gigs or hustles. However, this may be temporary since side gig earnings are not permanent in nature. So, you may have a successful claim in the coming weeks.

Ei Reporting Online

Employment Insurance (EI) Reporting is a crucial process in Canada, allowing employers to fulfill their obligations and employees to claim benefits when needed. In recent years, the transition to online EI reporting has brought significant advantages in terms of efficiency and accessibility.

Ei Reporting Online

Benefits of Online EI Reporting

The shift to EI reporting online has revolutionized the way employers and employees interact with the system. Here are some key benefits:

  • Efficiency : Online reporting streamlines the process, reducing paperwork and administrative burden for both employers and employees.
  • Accessibility : Access to the EI dashboard from anywhere with an internet connection has made it easier for users to submit EI reports and access their EI data .
  • Accuracy : The online system helps minimize reporting errors, ensuring that employees receive their EI benefits promptly.

How to File EI Reports in Canada

Filing EI reports in Canada is a fundamental responsibility for both employers and employees. These reports are categorized into three main types: weekly reports , quarterly reports , and annual reports . Each serves a specific purpose and should be submitted in a timely manner.

How to Set Up Online EI Reporting

To access the advantages of online EI reporting , employers need to set up their accounts on the Employment Insurance website . This process involves providing necessary EI compliance information, such as business details and employee data.

Types of EI Reports

  • Weekly Reports : Submitted by employees to declare their work and earnings for each week they claim benefits.
  • Quarterly Reports : Filed by employers to report their employees’ insurable earnings and remit the required premiums.
  • Annual Reports : An overview of the previous year’s employment information, used to determine future premium rates.

EI Reporting Deadlines in Canada

Meeting EI reporting deadlines is crucial to ensure uninterrupted benefits for employees and avoid penalties for employers. Deadlines vary depending on the type of report being submitted.

  • Weekly reports : Generally due within 3 weeks after the end of the week being reported.
  • Quarterly reports : Due by the last day of the month following the end of the quarter.
  • Annual reports : Typically due by the end of February.

How to Analyze EI Reports

Proper analysis of EI reports is essential for employers to understand their workforce and compliance. Utilizing the data available on the EI dashboard , employers can assess trends, track insurable earnings, and make informed decisions about their workforce.

Common EI Reporting Errors

Despite the advantages of online reporting, EI reporting errors can still occur. These errors may include inaccuracies in earnings reporting, data entry mistakes, or missed deadlines.

How to Correct EI Reporting Errors

When errors are identified, it’s important to rectify them promptly. The process for correcting EI reporting errors involves revising the inaccurate data and resubmitting the corrected report through the online system.

Online EI reporting in Canada has brought about significant improvements in terms of efficiency, accuracy, and accessibility. Employers and employees must familiarize themselves with the various types of reports and deadlines to ensure compliance with the system. Proper analysis of EI data and quick correction of errors are essential for a smooth experience and the timely receipt of EI benefits .

How to Fill Out Your EI Report Online in Canada: 12 Complete Steps (2024)

Photo of author

Want to learn how to fill out your EI Report online? You’ve come to the right place.

About two in every three Canadians have just enough money in their savings to help them through three months of living expenses in case they lose their primary income source.

It’s not just an alarming stat for one-third of Canadians; even people with emergency funds might have trouble sustaining themselves for very long. This is why programs like Employment Insurance (EI) are so crucial.

EI acts as a viable replacement for your primary income. If you are receiving it, you need to fill your EI report online or via phone regularly to continue receiving your benefits.

Here’s a quick summary of the steps to fill out your EI report online, which I break down in more detail below:

  • Visit the Service Canada website: Go to the CRA site here.
  • Sign in to your account: Click on “Sign in” and choose either “Sign in with your online banking login” (Sign-In Partner) or “Sign in with your GCKey.” If you don’t have an account, you’ll need to register for one.
  • Access your EI account: After signing in, navigate to the “Employment Insurance (EI)” section and click on “Access My Service Canada Account.”
  • Locate your EI claim: In your Service Canada Account, find the “Employment Insurance (EI)” section and click on “View my Employment Insurance (EI) information.” This will take you to a page displaying your active EI claim.
  • Begin your report: Find the “Internet Reporting Service” section and click on “Complete your EI report” to start the process.
  • Read the instructions: Carefully read the provided instructions and click “Continue” to proceed.
  • Enter your Social Insurance Number (SIN) and access code: Input your 9-digit SIN and your 4-digit access code (found on the benefit statement mailed to you) to log in to the Internet Reporting Service.
  • Review and confirm your personal information: Ensure that your personal information is accurate and up-to-date.
  • Whether you were available for work during the reporting period
  • Whether you started or stopped working during the reporting period
  • Whether you received any earnings during the reporting period
  • Whether you attended school or training during the reporting period
  • Review your answers: Before submitting your report, double-check your answers to ensure accuracy.
  • Submit your report: Click “Submit” to complete your EI report. You’ll receive a confirmation number, which you should keep for your records.
  • Monitor your account: Regularly check your Service Canada Account for updates on your EI claim and any additional instructions.

What You Will Need to Fill Out Your EI Report Online

EI Report Online infographic

There are a few things you will need to fill out your EI report online. You need to keep them handy when you are about to submit your report:

  • Access to a stable internet connection;
  • A device to access the internet and fill out the report (ideally, a computer or laptop, but you can also do it on your phone);
  • Your Social Insurance Number (SIN) to help you log on to the portal;
  • Your Access code, which you can get via mail (hardcopy), not online. If you have lost your access code, you must visit a Service Canada office or call them at 1-800-206-7218. You cannot fill your EI report online without your access code; and
  • The phone numbers of your employers if you’ve worked during the two weeks.

EI Report Online

If you are receiving Employment Insurance (EI) benefit payments, you need to file a report every two weeks to inform Service Canada that you are still eligible for the next round of benefit payments.

The most efficient way of doing it is by filling out your Service Canada EI report online.  You can find the CRA link for this here.

If you’ve worked during the two weeks you are reporting for (even if you didn’t get paid yet), you must write the exact number of hours you’ve worked and the full amount you have received or will receive before deductions.

You can also fill out your EI report via phone, where you will have to provide the relevant details to the system from the other end of your phone call. However, this is only applicable to people who don’t have access to the internet.

How to Fill Your EI Report Online (Step-by-Step Guide)

Filling out your EI report online is relatively easy if you have all the requisite information at hand. All you have to do is to follow these simple steps:

Step 1: Enter the Reporting Portal

You can access the reporting portal via your My Service Canada Account , or you can search for “Internet Reporting Service EI” and click on the following result:

reporting services ei

Once you do, it will take you to a page where you can submit your EI report online.

reporting services ei

After providing the three requisites—your SIN, access code, and province—you can now move to the next step.

Step 2: Acknowledgement

The next page offers essential, relevant information about the EI report you are about to fill, including the frequency of filing your report and payment dates .

It’s highly recommended that you go through the information provided before moving forward. You will have to acknowledge that you have gone through the information by clicking “I Accept”.

reporting services ei

Step 3: Address and Direct Deposit Information

Here, you have two options:

reporting services ei

  • If you haven’t changed your address but instead retained the same direct deposit information that they used to send you the last payment, click “No” and proceed to the next step.
  • If you have, you will need to update your account and provide Service Canada with the latest information so that the next EI payment reaches you without any complications.

You need to reconfirm your choice by clicking “I Accept” before moving on to the next step.

Step 4: Did You Leave the Country?

The government needs to know whether you were in the country for the working days that it’s paying you EI for.

If you left the country for any number of days during the week you are reporting for, you won’t get paid for those days.

Be truthful in your reporting, as a few days of docked pay is a minor issue compared to the consequences of deceiving the government about your presence in the country.

reporting services ei

If you didn’t leave the country during the week, click “No” and continue.

If you left the country, provide the relevant information. Take note that the days are most important.

Confirm your answer by clicking “I Accept” in the acknowledgment step to move ahead.

Step 5: Self-Employment Income

Just like regular wages, the self-employment income you’ve earned in the week may impact the benefit payment you receive.

reporting services ei

  • Click “Yes” or “No” based on your self-employment status. If you were self-employed, you would need to provide relevant work and payment details.
  • Click “Yes” or “No” depending on whether you worked or received any other payment during the period. If you worked during the week for which you will be paid at the end of the month, you need to mention it. You can’t click “No” simply because you haven’t been paid yet.

It’s important to note that if you are reporting your earnings, you must write the pre-tax earnings, rounded to the full dollar amount. If you have joined a proper job for which you haven’t been paid yet, multiply your hourly wage by the number of hours you have worked.

Step 6: Training

If you were in school, trade school, or any training program, you need to click “Yes” to provide information about two things:

  • The total training or schooling hours you attended during the week, and
  • The amount of allowance you received, excluding commute, relocation, and dependent allowance.

Step 7: Availability

The government needs to ensure that it’s paying you for a valid reason, i.e., that you can’t find a job even though you are willing , capable , and available to work.

If you weren’t available on any of the working days because you were taking care of someone or weren’t capable of working because you were sick, you need to report it on your availability tab.

reporting services ei

Step 8: Other Money

Any other money received during the week needs to be mentioned if: 1) it’s related to employment and 2) you forgot or missed to mention it in the self-employment income question.

These earnings may include:

  • Group wage-loss insurance, and
  • Worker’s compensation benefits.

However, payments like:

  • Lottery winnings
  • Inheritance assets

reporting services ei

If you haven’t received any eligible income, you can click “No” and proceed further. If you have, you will need to provide income details, including the amount, the payer, and the nature of the payment.

Step 9: Final Confirmation Statement

Once you’ve answered the final question, you will need to go through all the answers you have given and verify that they are correct.

It’s advisable to take your time on this page because once you click “I Accept,” your report will be submitted, and you won’t be able to change anything.

10: Review and Complete Report

Once you’ve completed your report, you will receive a confirmation notice and the date on which you can file your next report. Make sure to stick to that if you want to keep receiving your EI benefits.

11. Monitor your account

Check your Service Canada Account for updates on your EI claim every day, and see if there is any additional instructions or information you need to send to them.

Eligibility Criteria for EI

To be eligible for Employment Insurance (EI) benefits in Canada, you must meet certain criteria. Here are the key eligibility requirements:

Employment and Work

You must have worked for a certain number of hours in the past year to qualify for EI benefits. The number of hours you need depends on where you live and the unemployment rate in your area. You can find out how many hours you need by using the  EI Economic Region Finder  on the Service Canada website.

Hours and Earnings

When you apply for EI benefits, you must have lost your job through no fault of your own and be available and able to work. You must also have worked enough hours in the past year and have earned enough money to qualify for benefits. You will need to provide information about your hours and earnings when you fill out your EI report online.

Self-Employed and Leave

If you are self-employed, you may be eligible for EI special benefits, such as maternity, parental, sickness, or compassionate care benefits. You must have registered for EI special benefits and have paid premiums in the past year to qualify. If you are taking leave from work to care for a newborn or adopted child, you may also be eligible for EI parental benefits.

Unemployed and Dismissed

If you have been dismissed from your job, you may still be eligible for EI benefits if your employer did not have just cause for dismissing you. If you quit your job, you may still be eligible for benefits if you had a good reason for leaving, such as harassment or a serious illness in your family.

Full-Time and Part-Time

You can receive EI benefits if you are working part-time, but your benefits will be reduced based on how much you earn. If you are working full-time, you may still be eligible for benefits if you have experienced a reduction in your hours or earnings. You will need to provide information about your work and earnings when you fill out your EI report online.

How to Apply for EI

To apply for EI benefits, you need to follow a few simple steps.

First, you need to register for a My Service Canada Account. This account will allow you to apply for EI benefits online and manage your account information. To register for a My Service Canada Account, you will need your Social Insurance Number (SIN) and some personal information.

Once you have registered for a My Service Canada Account, you can apply for EI benefits online. To apply, you will need to provide information about your employment history, training, education, and other factors that may help you qualify for EI benefits. You will also need to provide your contact information and the province of your residence.

When you apply for EI benefits, you will receive a benefit statement and access code by mail. You will need to use this access code to complete your EI reports and receive your benefits.

Receiving Your EI Benefits

Once you have completed and submitted your EI report online, you can expect to receive your benefits within a few business days. If you have signed up for direct deposit, your payments will be deposited directly into your bank account. If you have not signed up for direct deposit, a cheque will be mailed to you.

Your benefit statement will show how much you could receive and when you will receive it. You can view your benefit statement through your Service Canada account.

Maintaining Your EI Benefits

To maintain your Employment Insurance (EI) benefits, you need to complete a report every two weeks. This report shows that you are eligible and continues your benefits. Here are some tips to help you maintain your EI benefits:

Keep Records of Employment

When you apply for EI, your employer will provide you with a Record of Employment (ROE). This document contains important information such as your employment history, earnings, and reason for separation.

Report Any Income

You must report any income you earn while receiving EI benefits. This includes earnings from self-employment, part-time work, and casual work. You must report your income for the week it was earned, not the week you received payment.

Keep Your Mailing Address Up-to-Date

It’s important to keep your mailing address up-to-date with Service Canada. This ensures that you receive important correspondence related to your EI claim, such as your access code for online reporting. You can update your mailing address online or by contacting a Service Canada centre.

Report Changes to Your Employment Status

If you find a job while receiving EI benefits, you must report it to Service Canada. This includes part-time, full-time, temporary, or contract work. You must also report any changes to your employment status, such as a change in hours or pay.

IR-2024-36, Feb. 8, 2024

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service and Security Summit partners today alerted tax professionals of a scam email impersonating various software companies in an attempt to steal Electronic Filing Identification Numbers (EFINs).

The IRS warned that scammers are posing as tax software providers and requesting EFIN documents from tax professionals under the guise of a required verification to transmit tax returns. These thieves attempt to steal client data and tax preparers' identities, creating the potential for them to file fraudulent tax returns for refunds.

To help protect tax professionals against this emerging scam, the IRS is hosting a special series of educational webinars aimed at the tax community. The sessions will begin Feb. 12 and run each day next week.

"With filing season underway, scammers use this time of year to target tax professionals as well as taxpayers in hopes of stealing information that can be used to try filing fraudulent tax returns,” said IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel. “The IRS and the Security Summit partners have noticed a new surge of an EFIN scam email that targets professionals. This scam serves as a powerful reminder that tax professionals should ensure strong security at their practices, including reminding employees to be careful with any emails coming in that could be posing as an official communication. A little extra caution can mean a world of difference for tax professionals during this busy period."

The IRS has already received dozens of reports of the scam targeting tax professionals. They should be alert for a scam email that includes a U.S.-based area code for faxing EFIN documents and also provides instructions on obtaining EFIN documentation from the IRS e-Services site if unavailable. Scam variations being seen use different fax numbers for software vendors. Other warning signs of a scam include inconsistencies in the email wording and a German footer in the email.

The IRS cautions tax professionals who receive these should not respond to the email and should not proceed with any of the steps displayed in the email. The body of the fraudulent email states:

Dear [recipient_email_address], Help us protect you. Because many Electronic Filing Identification Numbers (EFINs) are stolen each year and used to file fraudulent tax returns, the IRS has asked software vendors, such as Software A, to verify who the EFIN owner is by getting a copy of the IRS issued EFIN document(s). Our records show that we do not have a document for one or more of the EFINs that you transmit with. What this means for you: Until your EFIN is verified, you will be unable to transmit returns. Please provide a copy of your EFIN Account Summary from IRS e-Services, with a status of ‘Completed’, to Software B for verification. To send us your EFIN Summary document: Fax to Software B at 631-995-5984 PLEASE NOTE THAT YOUR PREPARER TAX IDENTIFICATION NUMBER (PTIN) APPLICATION CANNOT BE USED AS DOCUMENTATION FOR YOUR EFIN. If you do not have the above documentation you can get a copy of your IRS Application Summary from IRS e-Services by following the below steps or call the IRS e-Services helpline at 866-255-0654. 1. Sign in to your IRS e-Services account 2. Choose your organization from the list provided and click Submit 3. Click the Application link to access your existing application 4. Click the e-File Application link 5. Select the existing application link that applies to your organization 6. Click the Application Summary link for the area of the application you wish to enter 7. Click the Print Summary link at the bottom of the summary presented on the screen If you have any questions please contact the Compliance Department at xxx-xx-xxxx for assistance. Thank you for your business. We look forward to serving you this coming season. Software B (edited)

Tips to avoid and how to report potential scams

Tax-related identity theft scams consistently target tax professionals with a slew of scams and schemes that seek to gain access to sensitive taxpayer information. As these schemes continue to evolve and increase in volume, they pose a threat to both tax professionals and the clients they serve.

Earlier this year, the IRS warned tax professionals of a surge of a new client scheme , and they should continue watching for this scam.

Some phishing scams are ransomware schemes in which the thief obtains control of the tax professionals' computer systems and holds the data hostage until a ransom is paid. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has warned against paying a ransom because thieves typically leave the data encrypted.

Tax pros who receive the scam email should notify the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) to report the IRS impersonation scam. They should also save the email and send it as an attachment to [email protected] .

If there is suspicion that data theft has occurred, tax pros should report it to their local IRS Stakeholder Liaison as soon as possible. IRS Stakeholder Liaison staff will ensure all appropriate IRS offices are alerted and can take steps to block fraudulent returns in the clients' names as well as assist tax pros through the process.

Tax professionals should be attentive to other phishing scams that seek EFINs, Preparer Tax Identification Numbers (PTINs), or e-Services usernames and passwords.

For signs of cryptocurrency laundering, look closely at Moscow firms, report says

By Joe Warminsky

February 14, 2022

Moscow City

Moscow-based businesses appear to be handling much of the money laundering of cryptocurrency payments that come from global ransomware activity and other forms of cybercrime, according to a report from crypto-tracking company Chainalysis .

The analysts focused on several dozen companies with a presence in Moscow City, the Russian capital’s skyscraper-packed business district. In any given quarter, “illicit and risky” blockchain addresses account for between 29% and 48% of all funds received by those cryptocurrency businesses, the report says. That traffic, including legitimate crypto transactions, can sometimes be more than $1 billion in a quarter, Chainalysis says.

“A huge amount of cryptocurrency-based money laundering, not just of ransomware funds but of funds associated with other forms of cybercrime as well, goes through services with substantial operations in Russia,” Chainalysis says in the Monday blog post, which is based on its upcoming “2022 Crypto Crime Report.”

The company defines “risky or illicit” addresses as those “connected to entities that, while not necessarily inherently criminal, are frequently linked to criminal activity, such as high-risk exchanges and mixers,” meaning the kinds of services that try to hide the tracks of cryptocurrency payments’ origins.

The Moscow City company Garantex, for example, handled cryptocurrency worth about $2.1 billion from the beginning of 2019 until the end of 2021, and more than $645 million of that was associated with addresses Chainalysis deems illicit. Another business, Bitzlato, handled more than $2 billion in crypto overall during that period, with more than $966 million worth of it coming from illicit addresses.

Some of the companies studied “are big enough that despite receiving millions of dollars’ worth of funds from illicit addresses, those funds only represent 10% or less of all cryptocurrency they receive. Those instances could be attributed to the business’s lack of knowledge, rather than purposeful criminal activity,” Chainalysis says. “But for other Moscow City cryptocurrency businesses, illicit funds make up as much as 30% or more of all cryptocurrency received, which suggests those businesses may be making a concerted effort to serve a cybercriminal clientele.”

Chainalysis did not analyze the potential effects of Russian law enforcement’s January sting against the REvil ransomware gang , noting that analysts have said the arrests “may not indicate true commitment to fighting ransomware.” Russian agencies also have cracked down on dark web cybercrime forums recently. Those actions came against the backdrop of Russia’s troop buildup outside Ukraine, and experts have said Russia could be just trying to show that its agenda isn’t completely unaligned with Western interests.

U.S. law enforcement recently made its biggest arrest yet in a cryptocurrency money-laundering case: A New York couple, including one spouse who drew attention for her rap performances as “Razzlekhan,” were arrested last week on charges of conspiring to launder $4.5 billion in crypto stolen from the Bitfinex exchange in 2016.

Chainalysis has had contracts with several U.S. federal law enforcement agencies and financial regulators, including the FBI and the Internal Revenue Service.
