The Barefoot Memoirist: Ina Garten Takes Her Story to a New Publisher
Garten, the Food Network star and best-selling cookbook author, has moved her highly anticipated fall autobiography from Celadon to Crown.
- Share full article
By Alexandra Alter and Elizabeth A. Harris
In 2019, the celebrity chef Ina Garten set off a flurry of excitement among her millions of fans: Garten, a Food Network star, best-selling cookbook author and social media sensation, was writing a memoir.
The publisher behind the book, Celadon, celebrated the acquisition of what was sure to be a best seller in a news release. “Ina Garten is beloved by all, a national treasure who has become iconic beyond the food world,” Deb Futter, now the president and publisher of Celadon Books, an imprint of Macmillan, said in the release. “Her memoir will cement her legacy in the cultural landscape.”
When Garten recently updated her Instagram bio to note the book’s October release date, the revelation once again led to online chatter and a cascade of news articles.
One crucial detail was missing: The book was no longer coming from Macmillan. Instead, it will be published by Crown, an imprint of Penguin Random House.
There’s little information about the memoir online, and the change in publisher — which has not been publicly announced — will likely make little difference to readers and fans of Garten, whose cookbooks have more than 14 million copies in print. But for Macmillan, losing a blockbuster fall book — the season when most publishers release their big name authors — to a rival could be a blow.
It’s unusual, though not unheard-of, for a major author to change publishers after a contract is signed. Typically such breakups happen when a writer and publisher have irreconcilable creative differences, or sometimes when an author gets poached with a more enticing advance from a rival company. Authors usually return their advance to sever a contract.
In an interview, Futter said that there hadn’t been any disagreement about the direction of the book, but that Garten had a long history with Crown, which released 13 of her cookbooks through their Clarkson Potter imprint.
“Ina and I worked really well together, and I’m really proud of the work I did on the book,” Futter said. “I want it to get a great reception.”
In a statement, David Drake, the president of Crown Publishing Group, declined to comment on the memoir moving from Celadon to Crown, but said the company was “thrilled to be reunited with her for the publication of her entertaining and revealing memoir,” which he described as her “inspiring and instructive life story.”
Garten did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The market for celebrity memoirs — which have long been reliable best sellers for publishers — has gotten even more heated in recent years, with publishers offering multimillion dollar advances. Some of last year’s top-selling books were tell-alls by big names like Prince Harry and Britney Spears.
Garten, one of the food world’s biggest stars, has built a massive social media following. She has 4.3 million followers on Instagram, where she endears herself to fans with her down-to-earth demeanor, forgiving attitude toward novice home cooks (“store bought is fine!” is one of her catchphrases) and her love of indulgences like giant daytime cocktails.
She also had an unusual path to stardom. She worked for Presidents Ford and Carter as a budget analyst for nuclear policy at the Office of Management and Budget before pivoting to food and opening her store in the Hamptons, Barefoot Contessa. From there, she created a food empire, with best-selling cookbooks that she released at a steady clip, and a popular, long-running show on the Food Network.
So far, she has revealed little about the content of her memoir, but that hasn’t stopped her passionate followers from speculating that it will be dishy: “Spill the tea, Ina!” one of her fans wrote on Instagram.
Julia Moskin contributed reporting.

Microsoft Publisher will no longer be supported after October 2026
At Microsoft, we are dedicated to providing our customers with the tools they need to achieve what matters, in their work and life. In order to focus on new benefits, we occasionally remove features and products.
In October 2026, Microsoft Publisher will reach its end of life. After that time, it will no longer be included in Microsoft 365 and existing on-premises suites will no longer be supported. Until then, support for Publisher will continue and users can expect the same experience as today.
Many common Publisher scenarios including the creation of professionally branded templates, envelope and label printing, and producing customized calendars, business cards, and programs are already available in other Microsoft 365 apps such as Word and PowerPoint. You can find a wide array of customizable templates at Microsoft Create .
As we look ahead to the retirement of Microsoft Publisher, we are exploring modern ways to achieve common Publisher scenarios across applications like Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Designer. We will update as we have more to share.
How will this affect you:
You can continue to use Publisher with its current functionality until October 2026.
Support for the perpetual version of Publisher will end in October 2026, when Office LTSC 2021 reaches end of support. Microsoft 365 customers will not be able to access Publisher from that date forward.
We will provide updates as the date approaches.

It’s time to admit that genes are not the blueprint for life

How Life Works: A User’s Guide to the New Biology Philip Ball Pan Macmillan (2024)
For too long, scientists have been content in espousing the lazy metaphor of living systems operating simply like machines, says science writer Philip Ball in How Life Works . Yet, it’s important to be open about the complexity of biology — including what we don’t know — because public understanding affects policy, health care and trust in science. “So long as we insist that cells are computers and genes are their code,” writes Ball, life might as well be “sprinkled with invisible magic”. But, reality “is far more interesting and wonderful”, as he explains in this must-read user’s guide for biologists and non-biologists alike.
When the human genome was sequenced in 2001, many thought that it would prove to be an ‘instruction manual’ for life. But the genome turned out to be no blueprint. In fact, most genes don’t have a pre-set function that can be determined from their DNA sequence.
Instead, genes’ activity — whether they are expressed or not, for instance, or the length of protein that they encode — depends on myriad external factors, from the diet to the environment in which the organism develops. And each trait can be influenced by many genes. For example, mutations in almost 300 genes have been identified as indicating a risk that a person will develop schizophrenia.
A tour of the evolution of minds
It’s therefore a huge oversimplification, notes Ball, to say that genes cause this trait or that disease. The reality is that organisms are extremely robust, and a particular function can often be performed even when key genes are removed. For instance, although the HCN4 gene encodes a protein that acts as the heart’s primary pacemaker, the heart retains its rhythm even if the gene is mutated 1 .
Another metaphor that Ball criticizes is that of a protein with a fixed shape binding to its target being similar to how a key fits into a lock. Many proteins, he points out, have disordered domains — sections whose shape is not fixed, but changes constantly.
This “fuzziness and imprecision” is not sloppy design, but an essential feature of protein interactions. Being disordered makes proteins “versatile communicators”, able to respond rapidly to changes in the cell, binding to different partners and transmitting different signals depending on the circumstance. For example, the protein aconitase can switch from metabolizing sugar to promoting iron intake to red blood cells when iron is scarce. Almost 70% of protein domains might be disordered.
Classic views of evolution should also be questioned. Evolution is often regarded as “a slow affair of letting random mutations change one amino acid for another and seeing what effect it produces”. But in fact, proteins are typically made up of several sections called modules — reshuffling, duplicating and tinkering with these modules is a common way to produce a useful new protein.
DNA alone cannot reveal how life works. Credit: Philippe Plailly/SPL
Later in the book, Ball grapples with the philosophical question of what makes an organism alive. Agency — the ability of an organism to bring about change to itself or its environment to achieve a goal — is the author’s central focus. Such agency, he argues, is attributable to whole organisms, not just to their genomes. Genes, proteins and processes such as evolution don’t have goals, but a person certainly does. So, too, do plants and bacteria, on more-simple levels — a bacterium might avoid some stimuli and be drawn to others, for instance. Dethroning the genome in this way contests the current standard thinking about biology, and I think that such a challenge is sorely needed.
Neuroscience needs some new ideas
Ball is not alone in calling for a drastic rethink of how scientists discuss biology. There has been a flurry of publications in this vein in the past year, written by me and others 2 – 4 . All outline reasons to redefine what genes do. All highlight the physiological processes by which organisms control their genomes. And all argue that agency and purpose are definitive characteristics of life that have been overlooked in conventional, gene-centric views of biology.
This burst of activity represents a frustrated thought that “it is time to become impatient with the old view”, as Ball says. Genetics alone cannot help us to understand and treat many of the diseases that cause the biggest health-care burdens, such as schizophrenia, cardiovascular diseases and cancer. These conditions are physiological at their core, the author points out — despite having genetic components, they are nonetheless caused by cellular processes going awry. Those holistic processes are what we must understand, if we are to find cures.
Ultimately, Ball concludes that “we are at the beginning of a profound rethinking of how life works”. In my view, beginning is the key word here. Scientists must take care not to substitute an old set of dogmas with a new one. It’s time to stop pretending that, give or take a few bits and pieces, we know how life works. Instead, we must let our ideas evolve as more discoveries are made in the coming decades. Sitting in uncertainty, while working to make those discoveries, will be biology’s great task for the twenty-first century.

Nonfiction book publishing is dominated by men. A new prize hopes to help change that
FILE - Naomi Klein arrives for a news conference at the Vatican on July 1, 2015. Klein is among 16 contenders announced Thursday for the first Women’s Prize for Nonfiction. The winner will be announced June 13 and will receive 30,000 pounds ($38,000). (AP Photo/Andrew Medichini, File)

LONDON (AP) — Go into many bookstores, and the nonfiction shelves will be dominated by men.
The Women’s Prize for Nonfiction hopes to change that.
“Nonfiction is still perceived to some extent as a man’s game,” said British historian Suzannah Lipscomb, who is chairing the judging panel for the inaugural edition of the U.K.-based prize. The judges announced a list of 16 contenders for the 30,000 pound ($38,000) award on Thursday.
An offshoot of the 28-year-old Women’s Prize for Fiction , whose past winners include Zadie Smith, Tayari Jones and Barbara Kingsolver , the new prize is open to female English-language writers from any country in any nonfiction genre.
Lipscomb noted that in 2022, only 26.5% of nonfiction books reviewed in Britain’s newspapers were by women, and male writers dominated established nonfiction writing prizes.
“In all the ways that we recognize expertise and authority — giving it exposure, giving it attention, sales, money earned by the authors — women were not featuring as highly as their male counterparts,” she said. “So I think that we do still need to close what (journalist) Mary Ann Sieghart called the authority gap. And that’s why this prize is needed.”
The company Nielsen Book Research found in 2019 that women bought 59% of all the books sold in the U.K., but men accounted for just over half of adult nonfiction purchases.
Authors from the United States, Australia, Canada, India, Jamaica, the Philippines and the U.K. are on the prize longlist, chosen from 120 books submitted by publishers.
They include author-activist Naomi Klein ’s plunge into online misinformation, “Doppleganger,” and journalist Patricia Evangelista’s “Some People Need Killing,” a searing investigation of the Philippines’ drug war.
There are works by leading academics and books on science and technology, including Cat Bohannon’s “Eve: How the Female Body Drove 200 Million Years of Human Evolution” and Madhumita Murgia’s “Code-Dependent: Living in the Shadow of AI.”
The list spans genres including travelogue (Alice Albinia’s “The Britannias: An Island Quest”), history (Leah Redmond Chang’s Renaissance study “Young Queens”), biography (Anna Funder’s “Wifedom: Mrs. Orwell’s Invisible Life”) and autobiography (Safiya Sinclair’s “How to Say Babylon: A Jamaican Memoir”).
Asked what unites the disparate roster, Lipscomb quotes a line from Funder’s book: “The project of good writing is to reveal to us the world we thought we knew.”
“There is a trend towards redressing wrongs, telling untold stories, exposing truths, revealing hypocrisies,” she said. “That sense of making good comes out of them.”
Six finalists for the nonfiction award will be announced on March 27, and the winner will be unveiled at a ceremony in London on June 13.
BookTok trend and 'publishing phenomenon' Sarah J Maas sends Bloomsbury profits soaring
The company, which is perhaps best known for publishing the Harry Potter series, said it had been boosted by strong demand for fantasy and sci-fi books.
By Daniel Binns, business reporter
Wednesday 14 February 2024 15:12, UK
Bloomsbury Publishing has said its profits for the last 12 months are set to be "significantly" ahead of previous expectations thanks to fantasy author Sarah J Maas and the so-called BookTok social media trend.
The company said Maas's novel House Of Flame And Shadow, which topped book charts in the UK and around the world following its release last month, had been a major factor in its "exceptional growth".
The American author signed with the publisher 13 years ago and her popularity has soared in recent years with reported sales of more than 38 million books worldwide.
Bloomsbury said Maas's latest release - which tells the story of a half-fairy, half-human woman - had also driven demand for her 15 previous works.
It plans to publish a further six titles as part of its contract with her.
Money latest: Mortgage rates up; broadband and mobile providers in 8.8% hikes
The rise of the BookTok trend on TikTok - in which users upload videos of themselves talking about books - had also helped to fuel sales, Bloomsbury said.
Analysts previously forecast the firm would have sales of £291m and profit of £37m for the year ending 29 February 2024. Its preliminary results will be announced in May.
In the 2023 fiscal year it reported revenue of £264m and £25m profit.
Bloomsbury, which is perhaps best known for publishing the Harry Potter series, said bumper sales of Maas's books reflected a broader trend of growing demand for fantasy fiction and sci-fi.
It pointed to figures by Nielsen Bookscan, which said the genre had grown by more than 50% in the last five years in the UK.
The company also publishes hit Chinese fantasy writer Cixin Liu, and is set for a further boost next month when a Netflix adaptation of his popular Three Body Problem trilogy is released.
However, the firm said other bestsellers had also helped its fortunes, including Pub Kitchen by Tom Kerridge and award-winning children's novel Impossible Creatures by Katherine Rundell.

Bloomsbury chief executive Nigel Newton: "I am overjoyed to report an exceptionally strong period of trading, principally driven by the increasing demand for fantasy fiction.
"Sarah J Maas is a publishing phenomenon and we are very fortunate to have signed her up with her first book 13 years ago.
"Her books have a huge audience which continues to grow, backed by major Bloomsbury promotional campaigns, driving strong word of mouth recommendation, particularly through TikTok and Instagram channels."
The publisher's shares rose more than 9% on Wednesday following its trading update.

Dynamic video recognition for cell encapsulated microfluidic droplets
Droplet microfluidics is a highly sensitive and high-throughput technology extensively utilized in biomedical applications, such as single-cell sequencing and cell screening. However, its performance is highly influenced by droplet size and single-cell encapsulation rate (following random distribution), thereby creating an urgent need for quality control. Machine learning has potential to revolutionize droplet microfluidics, but it requires tedious pixel-level annotation for network training. This paper investigates an application software of the weakly supervised cell-counting network (WSCApp) for video recognition of microdroplets. We demonstrated its real-time performance on video processing of microfluidic droplets and further identified the locations of droplets and encapsulated cells. We verified our methods on droplets encapsulating six types of cells/beads, which were collected from various microfluidic structures. Quantitative experimental results showed that our approach can not only accurately distinguish droplet encapsulations (micro-F1 score > 0.94) but also locate each cell without any supervised location information. Furthermore, fine-tuning transfer learning on the pre-trained model also significantly reduced (>80%) annotation. This software provides a user-friendly and assistive annotation platform for the quantitative assessment of cell encapsulated microfluidic droplets.
