6 common problems with Netgear routers and how to fix them

Got yourself a Netgear router? Here are some quick troubleshooting tips.

Why shop for a specific router?

If you're using a Netgear router, then first of all, you made a good choice. While the apps you use to interact with it might not be the greatest feat of design, when it comes to performance you're being well looked after.

But, there are also some common issues you may want to address but aren't sure where to start. Here's some quick troubleshooting tips.

1. How do I interact with my Netgear router?

For all troubleshooting, Netgear uses the www.routerlogin.net web app. So you'll need to point a web browser there while connected to the network your router is broadcasting.

The default username and password should be admin to log in. If not, check the documentation that came with your router, or see if it's printed on a label somewhere on the hardware itself.

2. Changing your network name (SSID) and password

By default your network name will be something relating to the router like "NETGEAR84-5G" and the password will be completely random and printed on a label somewhere on the router. It's reasonable you want to change these.

Once logged in to the web app you'll find both of these options under wireless. Change them to something more memorable and unique, remembering to click apply before you leave.

3. Turning off your ISP supplied Wi-Fi router

The video above uses the BT Smart Hub from the UK as an example, but the basic principle is the same whichever ISP supplied Wi-Fi router you're using.

You can just plug your Netgear into the ISP router and it'll start working straight away. But, two different Wi-Fi networks running in the same home can interfere, so for the best performance, you need to turn the ISP supplied one off.

Exact steps will vary, but you'll need to login to the web app of your ISP router using the details provided either in the manual or usually on a label somewhere on the router. You need to locate the setting to either put it in modem only mode or to just turn off its wireless capabilities.

4. How do I update my router's firmware?

Just like your PC or your phone, your router will occasionally need updating. The easiest way to do it is by logging in to the web app as detailed above. If there's a new firmware, you'll have a message towards the top of the window telling you so.

You'll find the option to update in the advanced tab in the app and under the administration section. The update will be displayed with a one-click to download and install the latest firmware to keep your router running at its best.

5. My download speeds are poor, what do I do?

This one is more difficult to solve, as it might not be just down to the router. The size of the house will be one contributing factor, as will the positioning of the router. If you can't move the router to a more central location, there are some things you can do.

You could try changing the channel that your Wi-Fi signal is using. If there are other networks nearby using the same channel, it could get congested and as such your speeds may suffer. Login to the web app as above in step 2. In the wireless settings this time you're looking for channel . Pick a different one to the default and see if that helps.

One easy trick is to use the 5GHz connection if your router supports it. A lot of modern routers are dual or tri-band, offering 2.4GHz and 5GHz connections. Typically, 2.4GHz is for distance, 5GHz is for performance. On Netgear routers, you'll see the 5GHz connection as a separate Wi-Fi network in Windows. By default, it'll have 5G at the end of the SSID.

Another thing to try is enabling Netgear's Dynamic QoS (Quality of Service) feature that is supported on some routers. This will help to intelligently prioritize bandwidth to make sure that the most important and demanding tasks, like streaming video and gaming, for example, are getting the share of the bandwidth they need. When you log in to your router's web app you'll find it under the basic menu in the sidebar.

6. How do I control my kids' access to the internet?

Like everything you can enable this in the web app, but an easier solution is to download the Netgear Genie app for your smartphone. It offers basic access to a number of your router's features, including setting up and managing parental controls.

Grab it for your phone from the links below.

  • Download Netgear Genie for iOS from the App Store
  • Download Netgear Genie for Android from the Google Play Store

Netgear Router Not Working

Is your Netgear router not working?

There are various reasons why your Netgear Nighthawk router may not be working, but  the main reason typically relates to the wireless signal.

If there is  no signal from your router or internet service provider , your devices will not connect to the internet.

Other causes include  outdated firmware, loose cables, faulty devices, disabled radios , as well as invalid passwords.

Luckily, there are many  easy solutions  you can try to solve the issue of your Netgear router not working, without needing much technical knowledge.

These solutions include  resetting or restarting the router, updating the firmware, refitting or replacing cables , changing the password, or contacting customer service for professional help.

Follow our step-by-step troubleshooting guide below to quickly solve this issue.

Why Is My Nighthawk Router Not Working?

Various reasons may be preventing your Nighthawk router from working properly. They include:

  • The firmware is outdated.
  • The power supply has been interrupted.
  • The device is faulty, or the radios are disabled.
  • Loose or faulty cable connections.
  • Interferences caused by physical objects or other devices.
  • Incorrect password or the password has been changed.
  • Hardware issues like faulty capacitator or antenna.
  • Invalid IP address

How To Fix Netgear Router Not Working

Nighthawk Troubleshooting

The following are the different ways that you can troubleshoot your router to solve the connectivity problems:

1. Power Cycle or Restart Your Router and Modem

You can always fix your connectivity issues with a simple restart.

The router works in tandem with the modem by continuously sending and receiving data.

After a period of uninterrupted use, sometimes the router or modem encounters bugs or interferences which cause poor performance. Often these can be corrected through a system restart or power cycle.

Follow the steps below to restart your router:

  • Find the power button on the router and modem then turn it off.
  • Give the devices a few minutes to rest.
  • Then turn the devices back on and wait for the status lights to become stable.

Below are the steps to power cycle the router and the modem:

  • Turn off the power button on the router and modem.
  • Unplug all the power cords that connect the router and modem, including all Ethernet/Coax cables connecting the modem to the router and the wall outlet.
  • Give the router and modem 10 minutes to rest.
  • Connect the modem to the wall outlet using the cable.
  • Turn on the modem after plugging the power cord in.
  • Give time for the modem to initialize and the lights to be stable.
  • Now connect the router to the wall outlet using the power cord.
  • Use the Ethernet cable to connect the router and the modem.
  • Turn on the router and wait for a few minutes for the lights to turn on.
  • Check whether your router is connected to the internet.

If your router is not working, you should check the cables for any damage.

2. Check for Damaged or Loose Connections

Your internet connectivity can be affected if there is any damage to the cords and cables. A clear sign of weak or no connectivity is that there will be no lights on your router or a red light will appear.

The splitter can also be at fault if you are using bundled services, so it should also be checked.

Below are the steps to check whether your cables are damaged or loose:

  • Check the power cord connected to the router and modem.
  • Check for any fluctuations in power.
  • Check the quality of the coax cable that is connecting the wall outlet and the modem.
  • Inspect the ethernet cable connecting the router and the modem.
  • If there are any damages, you should replace the older ethernet/coax cables with new ones.

If your Netgear router is still not working even if the cables are not damaged, you should check if there is a firmware update that you need to do.

3. Update Router Firmware

If your router is connected to the internet but cannot access it, it may be operating on outdated firmware. Your router must run on the latest firmware.

Below are the steps to update your router’s firmware using the Netgear App:

  • If you do not have the Netgear Nighthawk App, download it from Play Store and then install it.
  • Make sure that your phone is connected to the WiFi Network.
  • Use the admin credentials to log in to the App.
  • Then tap on the router image in the App and you will be directed to the settings.
  • Scroll down and select the ‘Check for Updates’ option.
  • A screen will appear with information about the firmware.
  • Tap on the update.

To update the firmware using Netgear Website, follow the steps below:

  • Log in to the Netgear Website and check whether there is any latest firmware available for your router.
  • Download the firmware manually and store it on your computer/laptop.
  • Then go to the admin portal of Netgear.
  • Under the advanced settings, select Administration and then click on router update.
  • Click on browse and this will map the downloaded file.
  • Click on upload and the firmware update will begin.
  • Ensure that the router is powered to keep the process uninterrupted.

4. Factory Reset Netgear Router

If updating the firmware does not solve the issue, doing a factory reset on your router can reverse any problems caused by conflicting settings by restoring to default settings. The following are the steps to factory reset your router:

  • Find the reset button which is located at the back of the router.
  • Hold and press the button for 30 seconds while the router is on using a pin or paper clip.
  • Take the paperclip or pin out when you see flashing lights.
  • Wait for about 10 to 15 minutes for the factory reset to happen.
  • Once the process is done, you need to enter the username and password.

5. Change Your WiFi Password or Network Name

When you input an invalid password or username, you won’t be able to access the internet via a Netgear router. To resolve this issue, you can change the router’s network name or password using the following guide.

  • To begin, launch the web browser on your device and go to the website routerlogin.net .
  • Once you have accessed the router’s login page, enter your username and password.
  • Navigate to the “Wireless” section on the home page and locate the “Name (SSID)” field. Then input the new network name that you want to use for your router’s wireless network.
  • Find the “Password (Network Key)” field and type in the new password that you want to set for your router’s wireless network. Then, click on the “Apply” button to save and apply the changes you have made.

6. Turn On the Netgear Router’s Wireless Radios

If you can connect to the internet through an Ethernet cable but not through the wireless network, it means that your router is not emitting a signal that is strong enough.

In this case, you can fix the problem by pressing and holding the WiFi On/Off button on the router for around 2 seconds. After this, the LED on the active antenna should be illuminated.

This will hopefully reactivate the antenna to improve the wireless signal.

7. Try Cloning The Current MAC Address

Another solution to troubleshoot your Nighthawk router is to clone the MAC address.

Often, home or workplace network setups have a specific number of MAC addresses that are approved, causing your device to have connectivity issues.

Cloning circumvents these issues by copying the MAC address from an approved device to the device having issues.

The cloning process is straightforward, you’ll need to have your old and new router available.

First, find the IP address for your old router and enter it into a web browser, it may resemble something like 192.168.1.1.

In the portal, locate the status page where the MAC address should appear. Copy this address and shut down your old router.

Next, load the portal using the IP address of your new router. Then, find the network settings page and enter the MAC address of your old router into the address field and save the settings. This completes the cloning process.

8. Contact Customer Support

If the above steps fail to resolve the internet access problem, it is recommended that you seek assistance from a trained professional. Therefore, you should call Netgear’s customer care or chat with them online.

A professional will walk you through some of the solutions and if they don’t work, they will send a technician to your home to inspect the router. They will then advise you on the best steps to take depending on the cause of the issue.

9. Repair or Replace the Router

If the above steps do not solve the problem, maybe it is time to repair or replace your router. In this case, you should contact your internet service provider to help you with the process.

What does Internet orange light on Netgear mean?

On your Netgear Nighthawk router, each LED has a specific function.

Your wireless router's LED should be green if everything is in order.

If your device's LED is blinking red, the wall outlet is not providing enough power, which indicates a problem.

But in case of the orange lights on Netgear Nighthawk, you're going to have some major network and connectivity issues.

netgear nighthawk problem solving

Verify the power supply

It's likely that the wall socket, into which your Netgear extension is inserted, is defective.

Use one of these two methods to troubleshoot the problem:

Fix the wall outlet.

Connect your device to another wall outlet.

netgear nighthawk problem solving

Verify the power supply to fix router issue

When connected into a wall socket without power strips, extension cables, surge protectors, or uninterruptible power supply, powerline items perform better.

If you relocate a powerline unit or disconnect the connections, your network devices may need to refresh their information about the Powerline's current condition for roughly 5 minutes.

Avoid signal interference

Interference happens when unwanted radio frequency transmissions prevent you from using your cordless phone, radio, or television.

Interference may completely block reception, merely result in a short loss of a signal, or may have an impact on the caliber of the sound or your equipment produces.

Keep WiFi interference to a minimum as another solution to the Netgear extender orange light problem.

netgear nighthawk problem solving

Make sure the following objects are located far from your wireless range extender:

Cordless telephones.

Laundry equipment.

Babies' monitors.

Bluetooth audio devices.

Televisions.

Microwaves.

Refrigerators.

Cement walls.

Furthermore, keep your Netgear extender away from anything that contains water.

Check Ethernet cable

Over time, the cable could come undone, resulting in a continual orange light till you take a look at the issue.

Make sure your Lan wire is firmly connected to both the router and the device at both ends.

How should it be wired?

Your router's blue input should receive the Internet cable (black).

The Ethernet cable (while, gray, yellow) should be plugged into one of the router's four yellow inputs.

Your computer or other device's LAN input should be where the other end of the Ethernet cable is inserted.

Note: It is advised to disconnect and replug ALL wires throughout the troubleshooting.

netgear nighthawk problem solving

Last but not least, look for visible damage; if there is none, move on to the next stage.

Check for overheating

Overheating is another factor that might cause the Netgear router to start blinking orange.

This typically happens when there is a lot of dust present or when it is extremely hot outside, which causes your router to overheat.

netgear nighthawk problem solving

This may cause your router to sometimes overheat since it works hard to connect your network to the Internet.

Therefore, you must make sure the router is placed in a location that is well-ventilated and free from any kind of risk of overheating.

Not only will you avoid the orange light, but this will also considerably benefit the hardware of your router.

Tip: Use a vacuum cleaner to remove as much dust as you can if you see that the router panel is getting really hot.

Factory reset your router

It is possible to reset every router setting by default.

In most cases, this will take care of any Internet problems, but we've kept it as a last option as it will permanently delete ALL router settings.

In that case, we advise making a backup of your WiFi settings so you can simply restore them.

The Netgear router can be factory reset by following these steps:

Open the Netgear application.

Select Advanced Settings.

Pick Reset.

Choose Reset All Settings.

While the reset procedure could take some time, after it is complete you will be able to see if the yellow light is still on.

In that case, there is still something you can do.

Troubleshoot IP conflict

You'll want an Ethernet cable to connect your router to a computer or laptop in order to do a troubleshooting scan.

A Windows-powered computer is also required because Microsoft can do an Internet check and identify an IP conflict that will be immediately resolved.

netgear nighthawk problem solving

A troubleshooting scan can be performed as follows:

At the bottom right of the screen, click and hold the Network symbol.

Select Diagnose network problems.

Watch for the scan to finish.

Select My Issue Is Not Resolved if no problems are detected.

Wait for the follow-up inspection.

If an issue is found once the scan is finished, it will be detailed for you, along with hopefully the solution.

Once the router is installed, setup and powered on, it should be showing (a) Internet connection to ISP, (b) Wi-Fi (if activated), (c) Active Ethernet (RJ-45) ports and (d) Wi-Fi Security (if available). If there are any active cable ports or Wi-Fi, their LED’s would normally be flashing
