Your website history is stored in most web browsers, letting you go back to see which sites you visited and what you searched for on search engines. You can also delete your search history to clean it up or to prevent others from seeing websites you visited. Viewing and deleting search history is straightforward in all web browsers.

How to View, Search and Delete History in Chrome

Use Ctrl+H to go to your history in Chrome. The history appears on a full page in a new tab, organized by time. Mobile users should tap the three-button menu and choose History .

You can browse search history in Chrome with the search box at the top of the History page. Just start typing, and your search history will become filtered automatically to show only the items that match your search.

If you're using the Chrome mobile app, tap the search icon at the top to find the search box.

If you find part of your Chrome search history that you want to keep but decide that there's something particular you want to remove, press the three-dotted button next to that specific item, and then choose Remove from history .

Mobile users can erase a single website from their history by tapping the small x off to the right.

Another way to erase your Chrome search history is to delete it all in one action.

Stay on the History tab.

Select Clear browsing data to open a new window, and choose Browsing history .

You can change the Time range value to whatever works for you, and then press Clear data to delete your browsing history and search history.

The Chrome app for mobile devices works the same way: use the Clear browsing data link on the History page to see the same screen shown above.

How to View, Search and Delete History in Microsoft Edge

The Ctrl+H shortcut opens your history in Edge. The items show up on the right side of the screen sorted by date. For the mobile app, tap the three-dotted menu button at the bottom and then choose History.

There's an x next to each item in your Edge history that you can press to remove them from the History page immediately. If you're on the mobile app, press-and-hold an item to find the Delete option.

Alternatively, you can delete your entire search history in one action.

On the left menu of Edge's list of your search history, select Clear browsing data .

Ensure that Browsing history is one of the chosen items.

Select Clear now .

On the Edge mobile app, from the History page, select the trash icon at the top and then choose Clear . Select Browsing history before deleting.

How to View, Search and Delete History in Firefox

Enter Ctrl+H from your keyboard to see all your Firefox search and web history. The History panel opens on the left side of Firefox, organized by day by default, but can be customized to show the history by site and frequency of use. For the Firefox mobile app, tap the three-button menu and choose History .

Type something into the search box above the Firefox history list to instantly search through your search history and the websites you've visited.

Erasing a single web page or search item from your history in Firefox is as easy as right-clicking it and choosing Delete Page . If you're using the mobile app, press-and-hold and then select Remove .

Firefox lets you erase all your history through the Clear All History menu.

Get there with the Ctrl+Shift+Del keyboard shortcut.

Make sure Browsing & Download History and Form & Search History is chosen from the list, and then press Clear Now .

If you want to erase only recent history, change the Time range to clear option to something other than Everything .

The Firefox mobile app lets you clear the web search history, too, by selecting CLEAR BROWSING HISTORY on the History page.

How to View, Search and Delete History in Safari

Go to History > Show All History at the top of the browser to view your Safari history. All of your recently visited sites are listed on a single page, sorted by day. For the mobile app, tap the bookmarks icon on the bottom and then the clock icon at the top.

Look through your Safari history from the History page. Start typing into the text box at the top of the page, and the results populate instantly.

To delete single search history items from Safari, locate what you want to remove and right-click it to find the Delete option. You can delete an entire day's worth of history, too.

Mobile Safari users can selectively delete history items by swiping to the left and then tapping Delete .

To delete all search history in Safari, use the Clear History button on the History page. Choose how much to remove — the last hour , today , today and yesterday , or all history — and then choose Clear History .

The Safari app lets you delete all your history, too, via the Clear button on the bottom of the History page.

How to View, Search and Delete History in Opera

The Ctrl+H shortcut lets you view your Opera web history. The history list shows up in a new tab called History. If you're using the mobile app, tap the Opera menu icon on the bottom, and then select History .

On the History page in Opera is a search box at the top that you can use to search through old search history items and browse websites you've already opened. Just type and then wait a moment for the results to populate.

To remove particular search history items in Opera, hover your mouse over the item you want to delete and then select the x off to the right. If you're on the mobile app, press the three-dotted menu to the right of the item and then choose Delete .

You can also delete all of your Opera history from the same page, with the Clear browsing data button. From there, make sure Browsing History is selected and that the set Time range is as you want it, and then press Clear data .

The Opera app makes clearing all the history a little easier. Just select the trash icon at the top of the History page.

How to View, Search and Delete History in Yandex

Like most browsers, your Yandex search history is accessible from the Ctrl+H shortcut.

After opening the search history in Yandex, locate the search box at the upper-right corner of the page. You might have to scroll if your browser window is too small to see it. Type the search term and press Enter to view the search history that matches.

Yandex is like Chrome when it comes to deleting a specific page from your history: hover your mouse over the item that needs to be deleted, press the small arrow, and then choose Remove from history .

Use the Clear history link to the right of your history items to open a new prompt where you can delete all the history in Yandex. Choose how far back to remove the search history and then select Views . Select Clear to erase it all.

Removing the Yandex browsing and search history on the mobile app is done through the menus. Tap the menu bottom on the bottom and choose Settings , and then Clear data . Select History before tapping Clear data .

To delete your browsing or search history on your iPhone , open Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data . Alternately, open Safari and select Bookmarks > History > Clear > All time . Note that this process only applies to your iPhone's built-in Safari web browser and other browsers may require different steps.

To clear your search history in YouTube , sign into the site via a web browser and select History > Search History > Clear All Search History . Or if you use the YouTube app, select your profile icon on iOS (or the Menu icon on Android) > Settings > Clear search history > OK .

Clearing your Google search history on mobile requires using the Chrome app. On Android, select the three dots > History > Clear Browsing Data > All time > Clear data . On iOS, select the three dots > History > Clear Browsing Data > All Time > make sure Browsing History is checked > select Clear Browsing Data twice.

Your web browser history is a peek into your inner world, motivations and behaviors. And as such, you might not want your Google digital diary shouting its contents to anyone who peeks over your shoulder at just the wrong moment.

You can manage this sensitive history no matter which browser you use, from Chrome, to Firefox, to Apple's Safari, but the steps are all a little different. And keep in mind that if you have multiple devices — and more than one browser on each device — that you may have to repeat some of these processes so that your main squeeze doesn't know that you've been, for example, searching for an engagement ring online.

Here's how to view and delete your history in various browsers. We'll start with Chrome, which is made by Google. Google is now such a ubiquitous and powerful search engine that the company's products, such as its Chrome browser , log your previous searches by syncing them between your various devices (laptop, tablet smartphone). However, once you delete your history in one device, it will remove it from all devices. These steps will remove searches using other search engines as well.

  • In Google Chrome

In Google Chrome:

  • Click or tap the menu icon with three dots on the upper-right side of the browser window.
  • Click or tap History > History (CTRL+H).

  • If you want to completely clear out your history, also click the boxes for cookies and other site data and cached images and files. Then click Clear Data . That'll clear out your previous searches.
  • You may also want to prevent Chrome from auto-completing searches in the future. In Settings , (also found by tapping on the three dots on the upper-right of your browser) click Sync and Google services , and scroll to Other Google Services . Under Other Google Services, find Autocomplete searches and URLs and toggle this switch off (to the left).
  • If you need to clear your mobile history, tap on the three dots, then on History . Click on Clear Browsing Data , then tap Clear Data .

For Firefox:

  • Click or tap the menu icon with three lines on the upper-right side of the browser. window.
  • Click on the Library icon from the drop-down menu.
  • Click on the History icon that comes up in the drop-down menu inside the Library tab.

  • Right-click on the option you want and press Delete .

  • By adjusting your Google account settings, you can control the data Google keeps in the first place.

When you delete your Google search history, you remove all sorts of information that could be used by shady characters. Beyond the funny videos, news stories, trivia, and other content, think of how many times you have searched for an address, a phone number, information about an employer, and other data that could help a hacker steal your identity, find you in person, or produce other unwanted outcomes.

How and why you should delete your browser history

Your  browser history  isn’t just a list of the sites you’ve visited recently. It also encompasses passwords and personal information, website cookies, and saved data in your browser cache.

Clearing this data on a regular basis can not only improve the performance of your device and your browser, but it can also protect your privacy. Learn how to clear your browser history beyond your search data and recent websites.

What’s in your browser history?

Yes, there may be more to your browser history than meets the eye. Here’s what included:

  • Search history . In addition to your website browsing history, the information stored by your search engine is stored both locally on your device as well as in your account. If you recently searched for hotels for vacation, for example, or are shopping for specific products, this knowledge of your recent interests can be used to track your online presence.
  • Saved data . Password and address autofill is a convenient way to avoid retyping the same information over again, but this information can also be vulnerable to leaks and data breaches—especially if your passwords aren’t secure or are commonly used.
  • Cookies .   Tracking cookies are a necessary part of the Internet: they personalize your experience on websites and make online shopping possible. But third-party tracking cookies are used to target specific ads for you, which can seem like an invasion of privacy (especially based on your past search history). They’re also less secure than cookies from specific websites.
  • Cache .   When you visit a website, your browser automatically stores files, data, and background images to help web pages load faster and to facilitate online forms. Over time, this information can clutter up your browser’s performance.

How to clear your browser history

Modern browsers like  Microsoft Edge  make it easy to clear your stored data. Click on the three dots on the upper right side to open  Settings and more .   Then, select  Privacy , search , and services > Clear browsing data .

Here, Microsoft Edge gives you an option to clear some or all categories of data—this is useful if you want to retain your saved passwords. Select  Choose what to clear  and then tick the boxes of what you’d like to clear. Microsoft Edge will also tell you how many cookies it currently holds and how much storage has been taken up by the cache in megabytes (mb). Select  Clear now , and you’re all set.

You can also choose to have Microsoft Edge clear all or some of your browser data when you close your browser. The option  Choose what to clear every time you close the browser  will bring you to a new menu where you can toggle everything to delete when you exit out of your browser.

Clearing your browser data on a regular basis will improve the performance of your browser, as well as taking a further step toward protecting your privacy. It’s so easy, you can even have Microsoft Edge do so automatically.  Try Microsoft Edge today  to take your online security to the next level.

In the current digital era, maintaining your privacy is crucial. You can do this by following a few easy procedures that will protect your online activity and keep your identity private.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will deleting my google search history affect my browsing experience.

You won’t impact your browsing experience by clearing your search history. However, as Google does not have access to your past search history, personalised recommendations and search predictions might not be as precise.

Is it necessary to delete my search history regularly?

If privacy is a top priority for you, you should periodically clear your search history.

Can I delete specific search items instead of clearing everything?

Yes, you may choose to remove particular search results rather than all of them. Use the search bar to discover and choose particular things to remove, then proceed as in Step 3 (instead of selecting a time period).

Why Should You Delete Your Google Search History?

Let’s first discuss why it’s crucial to erase your Google search history on a PC before getting started with the procedure. The search history documents your Google searches. This covers the websites visited, the terms used, and even private data. You can remove your search history for the following:

  • Safeguard your privacy : Deleting your search history prevents Google from storing your browsing habits and personal information on its servers.
  • Maintain data security : You can clear your search history, which reduces the risk of unauthorised parties accessing your information.
  • Avoid personalised ads : Deleting your search history helps prevent Google from using your browsing habits to show you targeted advertisements.

How-To Geek

How to delete conversations in google gemini.

Want to clean up your Gemini history? Here's how.

Key Takeaways

  • Deleting a conversation on Gemini is quick and easy. Just hover over the conversation, click the dots, and choose "Delete."
  • To delete multiple or all Gemini chats at once, go to Gemini activity and select a time frame for deletion or turn off deletion altogether.
  • You can't delete your Google Gemini account directly, but deleting all chats removes your Gemini activity connected to your Google profile.

If you use Google Gemini (formerly Bard), each new conversation you start is saved in your chat history. So, if you want to clear this history, how can you do so? Moreover, what's the process of deleting your Gemini account altogether?

How to Delete a Gemini Conversation

Deleting a single conversation in the Google Gemini chatbot interface takes mere seconds. Simply hover your mouse over the conversation you want to delete, and click on the three horizontal dots that appear. Click on the "Delete" option, and confirm in the pop-up message that you wish to delete.

The Delete button for an individual chat shown in the context menu for the chat on the left-hand side of the chat view.

Now, the chat will disappear from the sidebar. That's all there is to it!

How to Delete Several or All Gemini Chats at Once

If you're looking to do a spring-clean and get rid of all your Gemini history, you'll need to first head to your Gemini activity. To do this, click on the "Activity" button at the bottom-left of the chat page.

Click the Activity button in the left-hand menu of the Gemini website.

On this page, you'll be met with a feature named "Gemini activity", which shows you how Google is currently saving your Gemini chats. This shows how long it takes for Google to delete your chats, and how far back in your chat history you wish to delete.

To delete all chats from a set period of time, head to "Delete" and choose what period of time you want to delete your chats from.

Google Bard chat deletion section on desktop.

Gemini lets you choose between the past hour, past day, always, or a custom time frame. If you want your chats to be deleted by default permanently, opt for "Always".

The custom time frame allows you to set a range between two specific dates, rather than choosing your own preferred duration. For example, a month, a week, and so on.

Bard activity custom timeframe settings.

Alternatively, simply click the drop-down arrow next to the "Gemini Apps Activity" and choose between turning off the deletion or turning it off and deleting your activity simultaneously.

Click the drop-down menu for Gemini App Activity to choose to turn off saving activity.

By default, Google will save your Gemini activity and permanently delete it after 18 months, but you can change this. Click on the "Deleting activity older than" option, and you'll be able to adjust this. You can choose between three, 18, and 36 months as your auto-deletion time frame, or you can simply opt out of having your data deleted automatically.

Menu for modifying the auto-delete function on Google Gemini apps.

On the main Gemini activity page, you can also see a list of your activity history, as you would a typical browser history. There's an "X" next to each saved activity that lets you delete manually and permanently.

How to Delete a Google Gemini Account

If you're not longer a fan of Gemini, or have given it a quick try and now want to delete your account, things get a little more murky. Because your Google Gemini account is directly connected to your general Google account, there's no option to delete it outright.

If you want to remove your Google Gemini account, it's just a matter of deleting all your Gemini activity. When you sign up for a Gemini account with your Google profile, you're not supplying Google with any extra information. So, once you've deleted all your chats as shown above, you're good to go.

Check out our guide on deleting your Google account if you want to wipe things entirely.

How Long Does Google Keep Your Chat Data?

As we've already discussed, you can alter how long Google saves your Gemini history for in the "Gemini activity" settings. What you choose here will determine how long Google will keep your Gemini chat history.

If you never want your chats to be deleted, you can select "Don't auto-delete history" in your Gemini activity settings.

The option to don't auto-delete activity in Gemini apps settings.

You'll find this by clicking on the arrow next to Gemini's current chat deletion time.

Make Sure Your Gemini Settings Suit You

If you're a frequent Gemini user, it's important to check your activity settings and ensure that Google isn't saving or deleting any data without you being aware of it. It only takes seconds to adjust your Gemini data settings, and this allows you to rest easy knowing your chat history is being handled as you'd like it to be.

They Know Haley’s Chances Against Trump, but They’re Voting for Her Anyway

A bus tour across South Carolina intended to evoke Nikki Haley’s political history in the state served up some reminders of how much it has changed.

  • Share full article

Nikki Haley smiles and walks after getting off her navy-blue campaign bus, left. A handful of people in shadows in the background are watching her.

By Jazmine Ulloa

Jazmine Ulloa reported from Nikki Haley bus tour stops in Newberry, Greenwood and Gilbert, S.C.

Everything about Nikki Haley’s latest barnstorm through South Carolina was intended to evoke a candidate on the upswing.

She had a sleek, new navy-blue campaign bus with her name on it. Her campaign, backed by a fresh infusion of funds , pumped $2 million more into ads, for a total $6 million buy. And she had fresh lines of attack to deploy against former President Donald J. Trump.

But the stops, carefully tailored to highlight her ties to the place she calls home and remind voters of her past political successes in the state, frequently served more as reminders of how much has changed here since her last winning bid for governor. Ms. Haley hosted fewer attendees at events in some of the more conservative strongholds crucial to a victory in the Feb. 24 primary. She drew larger, enthusiastic crowds at stops near the coast and around Charleston. Almost everywhere she went, even staunch supporters excited to see her speak conceded that her chances were slim.

“I am not a fan of Donald Trump,” said Robert Zangara, 74, a retired accountant who attended her tour stop on Sunday with his wife at a strip mall in Orangeburg and plans to vote for her next week. “But I just don’t think she’s going to be the nominee.”

Nearly one year to the date since beginning her presidential campaign, Ms. Haley is still promising she will remain in the race through Super Tuesday, on March 5, regardless of the outcome in South Carolina, where she is trailing Mr. Trump by more than 30 points in polls. She has dismissed concerns that a loss would torch her path toward the nomination , or, worse, her future political prospects, even as the momentum she enjoyed before the earlier nominating contests in January has all but disappeared.

In an interview with The New York Times in Los Angeles, she argued she was willing to be “David taking on Goliath” so that her children and everyone else’s would grow up in a better country. On Fox News on Tuesday, she was even more forceful in declaring the urgency of her quest when asked if she was worried about her career should she fail to clinch victory.

“That’s the problem with politics,” she said. “Donald Trump’s worried about his image. Joe Biden’s worried about his image. I’m not worried about mine.”

Ms. Haley named her bus tour the “Beast of the Southeast,” after the phrase an industry magazine used to describe South Carolina’s ferocious economic development under Ms. Haley’s leadership. Her first stop was at an opera house in Newberry, S.C., a small rural town in the Midlands, where Ms. Haley, then an underdog candidate for governor, had one of her first big breakout moments on a debate stage in 2010.

Wearing “Trump is too chicken to debate” stickers, Mike and Susan Strouse, Republicans who count themselves as die-hard Haley supporters, said they had been following her rise since those days. They had voted for Mr. Trump twice but did not believe him to be a viable choice for president after his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

“I just feel in my heart that she is the best,” Mr. Strouse said.

Introducing Ms. Haley earlier, Mayor Foster Senn of Newberry recalled that in 2010, just like now, Ms. Haley took on the establishment, challenging rivals no one thought she could beat. The state’s current establishment, including the governor and its two U.S. senators, has backed Mr. Trump over her. But while the opera house has a capacity of more than 1,000, Ms. Haley spoke outside, to an audience of about 150. On Monday, at a Harley-Davidson dealership in Elgin, S.C. , she addressed around 50 people, and some chairs that had been set up went unfilled.

Her other visits included Bamberg, her rural hometown near Columbia, which drew people who said they knew and liked Ms. Haley and her family growing up. The town’s mayor, who recalled stories of Ms. Haley from childhood, would not commit to voting for her .

All the while, her regular boasts about South Carolina’s economy under her leadership, her personal story and her calls to imagine a different country “where there wasn’t so much anger and division” took a back seat to her fervent attacks on Mr. Trump.

In the last few weeks, she has reframed her stump speech to attack the former president over his mental acuity, legal issues and his role in the collapse of a Republican-led deal in Congress to address the arrival of migrants at the southern border. She has sought to brand Mr. Trump and President Biden as “ grumpy old men .” She has chastised fellow members of her party for feeding into Mr. Trump’s “chaos.”

More recently, she and her allies have spent days pummeling Mr. Trump over his disparaging comments about her husband , Maj. Michael Haley, a National Guardsman, and for suggesting he would encourage Russian aggression against U.S. allies in Europe.

The sharp turn against Mr. Trump is one that many Republicans looking for an anti-Trump alternative had long hoped she would take, though it comes after Mr. Trump has already won Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada — and surveys suggest his lead in South Carolina is only widening.

An aggressive approach toward Mr. Trump didn’t work for a one-time presidential rival, Chris Christie, a former governor of New Jersey. Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, who like Ms. Haley refrained from forcefully attacking Mr. Trump until the waning days of earlier contests, has already dropped out.

Scott H. Huffmon, the director of the statewide Winthrop Poll, one of the few regular surveys of voter attitudes in South Carolina, said the pivot most likely won’t help in a state where Mr. Trump is so popular with the Republican base. And her politicking and entreaties into more conservative areas might not move the needle, either.

“She’s doing what the textbook of the past says she should do to expand the base but this is absolutely a new era with Donald Trump in the race,” Mr. Huffmon said.

Longtime political strategists in the state expect her to do well in the major metro areas like Columbia and Charleston, where she drew an energetic crowd of 1,200 people this month, and along the coast. More challenging will be areas like the more conservative Upstate, around Greenville.

Her most enthusiastic supporters at nearly all her events were members of her colorfully attired “Women for Nikki” coalition, who helped hype up her audiences by ringing tiny cowbells. But many had traveled in from out of state, and at a Saturday stop that drew only about 150 people in Gilbert, S.C., some 20 union protesters used hot pink swag to blend in only to interrupt Ms. Haley later with questions about what she planned to do for workers.

“How many of you are going to be disrupters like this? Go ahead and raise your hand,” Ms. Haley said after a third interruption.

Outside a market in Greenwood, S.C., Travis South, 47, a Republican and setup technician who programs robotics machines to make auto parts, said he had lost a close friend who backs Mr. Trump after he put up yard signs in support of Ms. Haley. He recalled her tenure as governor and admired her for her courage and character, he said, yet he still doubted her chances.

“The reality of it is, he is probably going to get it for four more years,” he said, predicting Mr. Trump would win the nomination and the White House. “But hopefully, she will be able to come back.”
