MFA Program

Stc academy.

STC Academy, in conjunction with The George Washington University, offers a Master of Fine Arts degree to develop actors for the mythic theatre.

Under the guidance of STC’s artistic team, STC Academy at The George Washington University trains up to 18 students each year. The Academy’s one-year intensive graduate program (consisting of a full 59 credit hours) focuses on the craft of acting Shakespeare and other classical texts. Training includes acting, voice, and ear-training—in particular the challenges of speaking verse—movement, mask, the Alexander Technique, text, stage combat, as well as dramatic literature and theatre history. By training under the auspices of “the nation’s foremost Shakespeare company” ( The Wall Street Journal ) and one of the nation’s finest academic institutions, Academy students receive a unique opportunity to learn and interact with members of the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s accomplished classical acting company. Training also includes performances in the Academy repertory productions in Washington, D.C. An alternative to traditional MFA acting programs, the Academy helps professional actors who want to strengthen their skills in these specific disciplines.

Master of Fine Arts in the Field of Classical Acting

The Shakespeare Theatre Company and GW join forces in an unprecedented collaboration between two leading DC institutions to create a master of fine arts program. The Shakespeare Theatre Company brings to the partnership world-class artists/teachers, a comprehensive training program, and a distinguished reputation as a nationally and internationally recognized leader in the classical repertory. GW brings to the partnership its resources and reputation as a major research university, with strong links to the Folger Shakespeare Library and the Library of Congress, as well as shared faculty and space resources.

Located in one of the most vibrant cultural centers in the nation today—considered by many to be the second most important theater center after New York—the Academy is the only MFA program in the United States dedicated solely to classical acting. Students are in class full-time, 40 or more hours per week, for approximately 44 weeks. Since 2000, the Academy has graduated 12 to 18 students annually who help transform the way classical theater is performed on Broadway, in regional theaters, and on teaching faculties around the country.

Creative Writing MFA Courses

Red Square is illuminated at night as students walk through it.

The foundation of the MFA Program has always been its writing workshops, representing two genres (poetry and prose). In their first year, students are enrolled in writing workshops each quarter. In the second year of study, graduate students may still continue taking workshop courses , but focus shifts to individual study guided by their thesis committee. This work is supplemented (and complicated) by speciality courses (English 581) focusing on specific areas of artistic concern.

MFA Acting Program

/ program of study / people / spaces / student work / how to apply /  graduate tuition & financial aid, the professional actor training program.

"I'm thrilled to be working alongside a faculty of master teachers and accomplished professional artists, and with a cohort of courageous and dedicated students. The training is grounded in tradition and deep practice, and yet pointed toward the unknown, the undiscovered, and the impossible. We graduate actors who are ready to work, and poised to shape the future of theatrical storytelling." - Jeffrey Fracé , Head of Acting

The UW Professional Actor Training Program (PATP) is a renowned three-year MFA program that has produced dynamic artists and creative leaders for over forty years. The vision for our program includes an emphasis on contemporary performance and generative work built upon the program's longstanding foundations in technical craft. Performers in our cohort will investigate the rapidly evolving role of acting, theatre, and the performing arts in a changing arts field and the larger world. What does it take to be an art-maker in the 21st century? How do actors instigate and embody critical questions for contemporary audiences? This program leads to a Master of Fine Arts in Acting, and prepares actors to embrace their potential as creative originators and collaborators, navigate their role as industry entrepreneurs, and hone their skills as critical thinkers and agents of change within their communities.

The faculty is composed of successful theatre professionals who pursue research that moves the field of theatre forward, and who teach at the highest level. We center our training in theatre, from the premise that such foundations provide a model for understanding and exploring other media as well. Actors will receive rigorous training and practice in movement and vocal techniques, explore analysis of scripts and storytelling structures, and work within studios exploring a variety of approaches, from the traditional to the experimental, including but not limited to Stanislavski, Suzuki Method, Viewpoints, Linklater, Archetypes, and Alexander Technique. Devising and project-based learning will form an important part of our new pedagogy, as we believe in the actor’s voice, agency, and power in the creative process. We also teach our actors how to teach, as we believe that the most successful artistic practice involves learning, doing, and teaching, all feeding one another.

Above all, the PATP strives to inspire life-long exploration and inquiry into the creative spirit that informs the actor’s work.

Program of Study

The training day is from 9:30am to 5:30pm, often followed by evening and weekend rehearsals and performances. Our program is structured to immerse students in an ecosystem of craft and creativity, informed by the professional and research experiences of the faculty. While sharing certain features of an acting conservatory, in that there are classes in the fundamentals of stage craft, text analysis, voice, speech, and movement, we center theatrical research and creation, aiming to lead the field of live performance in new directions that better express our shared humanity and build the kind of communities we want to live in. Accordingly, students are exposed to collaborative and interdisciplinary practices for creating original work, and mentored through the creation of new solo and ensemble projects.

SEE A SAMPLE COURSE OF STUDY ( Update will be posted soon )

During their course of study, each student appears in at least six productions, two self-generated solo shows, and extensive scene and technique classes. While centering our training in theatre, we also provide our students with screen-acting opportunities and audition coaching. We also provide business and career coaching for the independent generative artist, such as crafting vision statements, grant writing, personal finance, and project budgeting. The third year of the program focuses on preparation for the professional industry as well as deepening investigations into the unique interests of each student.

Prominent artists in the fields of theatre, film, and interdisciplinary new media often lecture and lead workshops with our students. PATP students receive a great deal of individual mentoring and meet for feedback with the entire acting faculty at the end of each quarter.

Our acting training emphasizes physical approaches to the craft of acting. Techniques include but are not limited to Alexander Technique, Suzuki Method, Viewpoints, Michael Chekhov, and Contact Improvisation. We view speaking as a physical act as well, approaching vocal work with active and embodied techniques such as Linklater, Roy Hart, and Suzuki; we also offer two quarters of singing as a pathway to greater vocal expressiveness and enlivening the connection between presence, breath, and intention. The legacy of Stanislavski endures in the American theater, and we believe it’s valuable for actors to understand the evolution of his technique and applicability of his later work on Physical Actions. That said, we resist boilerplate acting theory – there is no one way to act – but we do work individually with each student to help them discover and refine their approach to bringing their utmost to their performances.

MFA actors appear in at least six productions during their time in the School of Drama. Productions cover a wide breadth of period, genre, and style, in order to offer our students the maximum number of opportunities to practice the skills they are gaining in their training. Productions may be from old or new plays, or they may be devised. Some are directed by the MFA directing students, some by faculty members, and some by outside professional artists.

All MFA actors during their time in the program will teach three or more quarters of undergraduate acting. “Nothing teaches like teaching,” and we remain committed to deepening the actors’ understanding of their craft by mentoring them as they learn to teach their craft. In addition to coursework in pedagogic principles, MFA actors act as teaching assistants to senior faculty members, eventually developing their own courses and running their own acting studios while in the program.

Seattle is a vibrant arts city, with numerous professional theatres and presenters showcasing everything from Broadway tours to cutting edge local as well as international performance. The UW School of Drama is connected to all of these organizations including Seattle Rep, ACT Theatre, On the Boards, Base Experimental Arts, Seattle Theatre Group, 5th Avenue Theatre, Washington Ensemble Theatre, Seattle Shakespeare Theatre, Book-It Repertory, Intiman Theatre, and Café Nordo. Independent cinema thrives here, anchored by the Seattle International Film Festival and Northwest Film Forum. The three-year M.F.A. Acting program enrolls one class every three years.

The next class enrollment is TBA.

The actor will join a company of actors, directors and playwrights in a program that emphasizes a personalized approach to developing their talent, increasing their performance experience, deepening their technique, increasing their academic knowledge of theatre history and new dramatists, beginning their utilization of a personal creative process and honoring their spiritual essence.

First year courses focus on the actor’s self awareness – on the actor’s instrument and tools: the body and voice, the senses and feelings, strengthening their confidence of impulse, sense of play and exploring personal resources through various acting approaches. Special attention is given to improvisation and contemporary material.

In the second year actors concentrate on “character”- the process of transformation and performing, with progressive emphasis on creating a world from modern and classical texts. Particular focus is put on the discovery of the play’s action, character development, language demands and analysis of more complex literary material from classic and experimental origins.

Third year actors focus on scenes from living playwrights, dialect work, commedia, a monograph performance, audition techniques and studying theatre as a business. In the third year, actors will be eligible to audition for professional opportunities in the DC theatre community depending on university casting and/or assistantships. Actors prepare scenes and monologues for their final graduating acting project: a Washington, D.C. first look showcase that helps transition into their professional careers.

Actors are required to audition for and play as cast in all department productions and are required to serve on one production crew as well as an artistic practicum that supports the directors and playwrights.

Apply to STC Academy

Applying to our mfa program is straightforward and relatively painless. here's an overview..

Find out about STC Academy. Browse our site, review our curriculum , and look at some of our production photos . If you have a question, email or call us!

Begin your application.

Begin your application online at GWU. Sign up for an account, and have a look around. You can always save your application and resume it later. You'll want to gather your official undergraduate transcripts and two letters of recommendation, start your personal essay, and think about audition pieces.

Schedule an audition.

We prefer to meet you in person if we can! We’ll have local auditions on November 4th, 2023 and February 3rd, 2024 in Washington DC. Regional audition dates to be announced soon! Most candidates audition with two contrasting verse monologues - but if you feel better represented by other material, do that instead. If you'd like to submit a video audition, that's great too. When you schedule your audition, we'll set up an interview so we can get to know you a little better.

Application Materials Due.

Be sure to get all of your material in by our due date! We know that you might be waiting on materials from other people, like transcripts or letters of recommendation. If so, let us know we can keep your application open.

The Details

Answers to (almost) all admission-related questions. Remember, you can always email or call us if you don't find what you're looking for here.

Do I have to have an undergraduate degree to attend the Academy?

Yes. And . . . no. If you want to earn your MFA, you must have a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Many of our students have undergrad degrees in Acting; many have degrees in other disciplines too! Actors without an undergraduate degree may still attend the Academy and receive the same training and opportunities. These students earn a Certificate rather than a degree.

When are auditions?

We’re seeing Academy auditions in various cities this year:

Washington, DC : November 4, 2023 & February 3, 2024 New York : January 13, 2024 Philadelphia : January 20, 2024 Chicago : January 28, 2024

What should I do for the audition?

We generally like to see two contrasting classical monologues – Shakespeare’s a great choice, but other verse plays are good too! If you’re not feeling confident about your classical pieces, bring whatever two pieces you believe best represent you. Any text that you consider heightened, or poetic, would be a good choice here. Each monologue should run for about two minutes (four minutes or so of monologues total).

Who will be seeing my audition?

The Director of STC Academy, Alec Wild , and Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Head of Voice and Text, Lisa Beley .

What are you looking for in the audition?

We’re looking for actors with a facility for language, a solid vocal instrument, a connection to physicality, instincts toward action and objective rather than behavior, and an appetite for the big questions. In the interview, we hope to get a sense of your commitment to the acting profession, your work ethic, and get a sense of what sort of growth you hope to see in yourself.

If I'm sending a self tape, what guidelines should I follow?

Any camera that records video and good audio will be fine – most people use their smartphones. Stand back from the camera so that we can see as much of your physicality as possible. Make sure you are well-lit, and that the space allows for good capture of sound (not too echo-y or noisy). Please don’t look directly into the camera – rather, imagine your scene partner just off camera, and speak to that imaginary partner. You may also use an off-camera friend to play to.

What should I write about in the personal essay?

This is where you can express your personality, individuality, and goals. Anything goes here, but we’re most excited by the essays that feel honest, authentic, and don’t have boilerplate language (as in, “I believe [insert school name here] is the best place for me to pursue my artistic goals.”) By all means tell us why you’re interested in this school, and why at this time in your life. Why is it a good fit? What will you bring to the school that no one else can? How do you see your path after graduation?

Most of all, we want to get to know the real you. So be brave in your essay.

Who should write my recommendations?

We’d like to hear from people who know your work deeply, and who can assess your potential for growth. Directors, mentors, professors, or other colleagues are all great places to start.

What is the average age of the actors at the Academy?

Every class is different, but generally we admit actors who have been out of college for a few years. But don’t let your age (younger or older) stop you from applying! We’ve had actors as young as twenty-one, and as old as sixty in the program. The most important thing is your talent, commitment, and desire to grow and change your work.

How much does it cost?

George Washington University tuition is normally in the $80,000.00 range. Steep, we know. And the cost reflects the excellence of the institution and its reputation. We’re proud to offer every Academy student a 42% tuition reduction scholarship , which considerably lessens the student tuition obligation, and makes the full program tuition $48,000 . (Specific tuition each year can be found here ). We also have limited scholarship funds available (see next section), to lessen the burden for students who might otherwise have difficulty attending.

Because our program is an intensive one year, rather than two or three, the overall cost for your MFA is considerably lower than at other major universities. It’s why we conceived the program in the first place!

Is there financial aid available?

Yes! The program is run by Shakespeare Theatre Company, which is a not-for-profit organization, which means that our scholarships are funded by our generous donors and the hard work of our development and fundraising team . Though we cannot offer “full ride” scholarships, we do have significant tuition-reduction awards to offer students most in need. Our students are also eligible for federal assistance through the Federal Student Aid program. You can apply for aid at the FAFSA website .

How does housing work?

George Washington University does not provide housing to graduate students. Our students generally rent apartments in Washington, D.C. and the surrounding areas. Often, students connect before the program begins, in order to share a flat. Check in with our Program Coordinator about connecting with fellow Academy actors!

What do Academy graduates do? Where do they go after graduation?

We’re proud that most of our graduates have made lives in the theatre, and are working on stage, film and television all over the world. Some have started their own theatre companies (we love that); some have become master acting teachers at other institutions; and some have simply worked as actors – on Broadway,  and in regional and international theatre.

About a third of our graduates remain in D.C. after graduation – at least for a while. It’s a wonderful town to work in, with more than fifty AEA theaters and a vibrant artistic community. Roughly another third go to New York; and the last third go to other cities and countries. Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Toronto, Vancouver, Beijing, Warsaw, and London are a few of the places recent grads have landed.

Ready to jump in?

It’s all done online, and uploadable. Just click on “Sign Up” to make an application account, and start submitting your stuff! You’ll need your official transcripts from your previous college/university experience, your essay, and your recommendation letters. Then email (or better, call us ) to set up an audition appointment. We look forward to meeting you and getting to see your work!

How to Become a Writer in the District of Columbia (DC) with a BFA, MFA or Similar Creative Writing Degree

mfa programs washington dc

Created by CreativeWritingEDU.org Contributor

library of congress building in washington dc

With many preserved historic areas there’s a good chance you can take a walking tour past the original homes of some of your favorite authors right here in the District.

Walt Whitman is one example. He called DC home for a decade in the 1860s. The person behind such works as Leaves of Grass , his style was unique and forever changed poetry. Not surprisingly his innovation to abandon the then-popular structure for meter and rhyme was scorned by his contemporaries. Whitman’s time in DC gave him unique experiences that would show up in his writing ever after.

Fast forward to the 21 st century and DC’s own Jonathan Safran Foer is the most recent proof that a writer from the capital can succeed in the world of words. Everything Is Illuminated was his first novel and was made into an award-winning film with major Hollywood star power. The novel itself was also highly acclaimed, winning several prominent national awards and appearing on the New York Times bestseller list.

Safran Foer has since followed upon his initial success with more memorable work, and now he’s also a creative writing teacher at New York University.

In fact, it was at a university, when Safran Foer was a freshman, that he first caught the writing bug when he took an introductory fiction writing class taught by none other than Joyce Carol Oates. He found he liked writing so much that he continued in the academic pursuit, and his thesis under Oates turned into the first draft of Everything Is Illuminated .

Safran Foer discovered in college what other successful writers have too: uniquely talented and inspiring writing professors who make a profound and early difference.

Speaking of Oates’ guidance as a writing professor, Safran Foer says…

“…she was the first person ever to make me think I should try to write in any sort of serious way. And my life really changed after that.” ~ Jonathan Safran Foer on his writing professor Joyce Carol Oates

Safran Foer earned an undergraduate degree and that was all he needed to launch his successful career. A BA or Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) is great for laying a solid foundation in the literary arts.

While a bachelor’s was enough for Safran Foer, for us mere mortals, an MA or Master of Fine Arts (MFA) can take things to the next level and get you ready for both the artistic and business side of getting published, going beyond coffee shop writing groups and amateur criticism.

DC – Birthplace of the Harlem Renaissance

logan circle in dc

In fact, some argue that this African American intellectual and cultural revival in the 1920s and 30s got its start in the nation’s capital before moving to NYC.

Langston Hughes, who was influenced by Whitman, authored dozens upon dozens of short stories, novels, poetry collections, children’s books, and plays. While working as a busboy in a DC hotel, Hughes happened by one of the most popular poets in the nation at the time, Vachel Lindsay. Hughes put some of his poems next to Lindsay’s plate, and the next day national newspapers were talking about Hughes’ poems. From there he would go on to be a leading figure in the Harlem Renaissance.

Husband-and-wife duo Paul Laurence Dunbar and Alice Dunbar-Nelson lived in LeDroit Park. Paul wrote 17 books and was one of the first African American writers to gain national prominence, even though he died at the young age of 33. Alice was an outstanding poet in her own right with her own style, and this plus her literary reviews of prominent Harlem Renaissance writers shaped the trajectory of the movement.

One of the most important sites associated with the Harlem Renaissance is writer Georgia Douglas Johnson’s old house, today a few blocks away from the U Street Corridor, then-known as the S Street Salon. Every Saturday night she would host a local writers’ party where up-and-coming African American writers in DC could mingle with their older more experienced counterparts.

Johnson herself was an accomplished playwright and poet, and she also penned a weekly newspaper column. Her plays include Blue Blood and Plumes .

Zora Neale Hurston was one of those young up-and-coming DC writers who attended Johnson’s S Street Salon soirées. In fact she moved in with Johnson for a while, and was published for the first time while living in DC. In addition to her involvement in the Harlem Renaissance, Hurston went on to become an anthropologist and ethnographer of Black folklore, as well as the author of four novels including Their Eyes Were Watching God .

DC has been the birthplace of many important literary movements in the past, and will undoubtedly continue its tradition of leadership and creativity going into the future. You’re in the right place at the right time. All you need now is the creative writing chops to add your name to the list of great writers from DC.

District of Columbia’s Creative Writing Classes, Courses, and Workshops Can Prepare You for a Creative Writing Degree

As with any creative endeavor, your progress as a literary arts wordsmith improves with practice and experience.

Because Washington DC attracts some of the nation’s brightest it should come as no surprise that the city hosts plenty of opportunities for practice that will stimulate your talent.

Capitol Hill Writers Group welcomes aspirants in all genres of fiction, whether you have several books published or none at all. Membership is free and allows you to take advantage of regular meetings complete with Clarion-Method constructive criticism.

If you’re looking for a community, check out the DC Writers’ Salon. It has groups that meet anywhere from daily to monthly. In a unique approach, instead of groups focused on a particular genre, this salon has groups focused on specific tasks.

One group is dedicated to getting you out of bed and meets every morning at 8:30. One group is focused on holding writers accountable. Another group features writers talking about their craft. And of course, one group is dedicated to socializing where local writers can get to know each other.

The spoken word can be a powerful medium, a fact that’s made reality at The Inner Loop. This organization celebrates writers who want to read their work out loud with a monthly gathering plus additional programming that supports the goal of vocalizing authors like retreats, radio programs, and residencies.

Writers’ conferences are a great place to meet people like yourself in addition to publishers who are fishing for new talent. Each year DC’s historic Eastern Market is graced by the Literary Hill Bookfest, a celebration of the district’s authors and the books they write. Children’s authors provide entertainment for the kids while the adults attend author talks throughout the day on a range of literary topics.

When it comes to publishing, Literary and Creative Artists is one DC-based lit agency with more than 80 clients who include everyone from first-time to best-selling authors. They accept submissions in fiction and non-fiction.

Writing Colleges in DC Offering Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Creative Writing Provide a Path to Becoming a Writer

Writing is a craft that’s honed over generations and passed down. Degree programs in English and creative writing are designed to facilitate this generational fostering of artistic talent.

Jonathan Safran Foer launched his career thanks to his inspirational writing professor, and he himself is now passing on the literary arts to his creative writing students.

When you’re ready to get serious about supporting yourself as a writer and honing your skills to the professional level, that’s when you know it’s time to earn a creative writing degree.
