How to automatically play, loop, or restart a slideshow in Keynote

When you’re presenting a slideshow, the last thing you need to worry about is actually playing it. That should be the easiest part. Keynote offers a few simple ways to play your slideshow automatically . You can set it to start, loop, and restart without lifting a finger. This is handy for presentations that you want to play continually in a waiting room, conference room, or trade show.

Here, we’ll show you how to set up your Keynote slideshow to do just that – automatically play, loop, and restart.

Presentation Type in Keynote on iPhone

Automatically play, loop, or restart a Keynote slideshow

You have a few different options depending on your situation and when or where you’re playing your presentation:

  • Automatically play upon opening : You can set the presentation to automatically play when you open it. This is handy if you set up the slideshow and someone else needs to start it.
  • Loop the slideshow : This is an easy way to continually replay the slideshow after it ends.
  • Restart when idle : Maybe you don’t want to loop the presentation but have it automatically restart after a set amount of inactive time.

Presentation options in Keynote

  • Open your presentation in Keynote on your Mac and then access the settings by clicking the Document button on the top right.
  • Make sure the Document tab is selected at the top of the sidebar.
  • Check the box for the action you want to use: Automatically play upon open , Loop slideshow , or Restart show if idle for [time period]. You can use more than one at a time, too, if you like.

Automatically Play Loop and Restart in Keynote on Mac

On iPhone and iPad

  • Open your presentation in Keynote on your iPhone or iPad and then access the settings by tapping the three dots at the top.
  • Select Presentation Options > Presentation Type .
  • Enable the toggles for Loop Slideshow and/or Restart Show if idle [time period]. To automatically play the show, tap Self-Playing to mark a check for that option. This is different than playing the slideshow when it opens, like on Mac. Take a look at our how-to for the self-playing option .
  • Finally, tap Done to save the changes.

How to loop slides within a keynote presentation

Apple Keynote

This is a feature that is sorely missing in Apple keynote. The ability to create a loop within Keynote. For example you may want have a loop of 4-5 slides at the start of a presentation while people are waiting, and then start the presentation without having to exit and open a new presentation.  Or you may want to have a loop in the middle of a presentation, for example some photos that rotate while someone is singing, and then continue on with the presentation when you are ready.  There is no way of doing this within Keynote itself but here is a workaround that will get you out of trouble.

The way to do this is to make 2 keynote presentations. One has the slides that you want to rotate. The other is your main one.  You need to export the rotating presentation as a QuickTime movie and then import it  into your main Keynote file and tell it to loop. Here’s how to do it step by step.

Create the looping part of the presentation and export it.

Make a  keynote with all the slides  that you want  in the repeating section. Export it as a quicktime movie.

how to loop keynote presentation

This will save the keynote presentation as a movie.  Strictly speaking, it is not a movie,  it is a collection of still images that automatically advance when you want to.  It is kind of like a self playing keynote presentation wrapped inside a QuickTime movie file.  You can import this keynote movie into another keynote presentation.

2.  Import this looping part back into your main keynote presentation.

Open a new keynote presentation that is your main keynote presentation and insert the QuickTime movie into the new keynote presentation. (You can simply drag the movie into your keynote presentation,  or you can select ‘Insert’, ‘Choose’  and then choose the movie file.)

Inserting the movie back into keynote.

3.  Tell Keynote to loop the looping part.

Click on the movie in Keynote, then in the Inspector,  in the Movie panel  under repeat select ‘Loop’.

Tell Keynote to loop the movie.

That’s it!

Your main Keynote presentation will play like a normal keynote presentation, but when you come to the movie those slides within the movie will repeat endlessly in a loop until you click.  When you click it will move on to the next slide. This is the way to make a loop of slides within a keynote presentation.

The main downside of this method is that if you want to edit one of the slides in the looped part of the presentation, you need to open the original looped Keynote file, make the changes re-export the file to a movie, and reimport it into the new presentation.

Thanks for this – first thing that came up in my search. It is dismaying that I cannot set Keynote to loop back to a prior slide at a certain point.

This solution will not work in the instance where we are creating a deck that needs to be cued live because it is for a background stage element that only changes when a speaker finishes presenting. The entire thing then needs to seamlessly loop back to the start.

I take it there is no way to set up Keynote to do this, but if you learn of any would appreciate tips, thanks!

Wait, I take that back (so go ahead and kill my comment) … I looked this up online before discovering there is a global “loop slideshow” setting under Document tab that will return it to the first slide. I feel dumb for not having checked first.

yes there is – glad you found it!

This Global “loop slideshow” still does not appear to work with mine. I imported a powerpoint presentation into Keynote, Clicked Loop slideshow, still stops at last slide. Help!!!

Great article. 15 minutes to midnight and I’m wanting to enhance a presentation for tomorrow morning. Clear instructions and it worked the first time.

Thank you so much!

Thank you! I was working entirely in PowerPoint and was able to apply parallel instructions to accomplish this in PowerPoint. It worked immediately!!

This was very helpful!

I’m using dissolves, and for some reason my final slide fades to black, and I’d prefer it faded to white. Any tips for how to solve this?

Just put a completely white slide at the end and fade to it, does that work? Make sure the ‘Master Slide’ is white not black.

I tried this, but for some reason my video will play in edit mode but when I hit play it jumps to the next slide without playing the video loop. It is set to play automatically.

This DID NOT work. :(. Going to have to move the presentation to ppt.

Thank you ! It work very well. Clear instructions and it worked the first time.

Thankyou enormously! Your advice might be 5 years old, but it came up among the first googles, and it’s saved my cardio-vascular system and sanity! (Of course, I first had to tell MacOS15 Monterey not to open the movie in TV, but in Quicktime).

Programmatically Running And Looping Keynote Presentations

These days, you can spend a lot of money buying really nice digital signage tools. And if you’re doing so, then you likely have some pretty dynamic content you’d like to load. Something that doesn’t necessarily lend itself to a dynamic content platform, but which is nice for the quick presentation that you whip up and want to use for a form of digital signage is Keynote presentations. These are inexpensive and can be played on monitors through AirPlay or directly through a Mac Mini connected to a television or big monitor. Great for a monitor in the company lobby, the hallway in the school or for subliminal messaging at the DMV to convince you that no, the guy with the forehead tat isn’t really going to shank you (srsly, metal detectors, pls).

There are a few issues there, though. First, for most uses, you need the presentation to either go on forever or need to queue up a bunch of them. Then, you need to set the presentation to automatically start when opened so that you can just open files through a script. Scripts being able to be set as login items for a default user. There are also some logistical issues with the physical hardware if it’s in public, but I’ll assume you’ve got those covered and move on to the technical details of how to do the above tasks.

To prepare a Keynote presentation, first open the Keynote, click on Inspector in the toolbar and then at the inspector click on the document icon (in the far left top corner of the inspector). Then, check the boxes for “Automatically play upon open” and “Loop slideshow”. This will automatically play the presentation and start it again when it’s done.

how to loop keynote presentation

open /Users/admin/Desktop/Presentationname.key

Then to close Keynote and run something else:

killall Keynote

To close one presentation and immediately reopen a different presentation, merge the commands into one line:

killall Keynote; open /Users/admin/Desktop/Presentationname.key

Just make sure everything’s automated or the loop won’t run. Now, to automate events within Keynote will require clicking on things from an AppleScript or Automator workflow or using the AppleScript options for Keynote. To automate just clicking to move to another slide can be done with the following AppleScript (and sent via osascript), although it’s usually best done within Keynote:

tell application “System Events” click end tell

The following are all of the Keynote-specific options from Automator:

how to loop keynote presentation

To close a single presentation, the following workflow would do the trick:

how to loop keynote presentation

One challenge is that when you loop through different Keynote presentations, you would see the desktop of OS X and the Dock while Keynote is re-opening if you kill it off first. It should take a little less than a second. Once keynote re-opens, you see the menu for keynote for about another half second while the keynote document is opening. If I don’t close Keynote and instead just open a 2nd document then I see the Keynote menu bar for a split second while the second presentation is starting and I don’t end up seeing the actual Desktop. That would be done just by opening a second presentation from the command line. The caveat is that as you toggle between them, if you don’t kill off the Keynote application, you’ll end up starting where the other left off rather than at the beginning (which might be fine in a given workflow).

You can, if you need to kill the application, launch the screen saver first:

osascript -e 'tell application id "com.apple.ScreenSaver.Engine" to launch'

Or just in bash:

open -a /System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework//Versions/A/Resources/ScreenSaverEngine.app

This just fires up the screen saver to try and hide what you’re doing in the background. You can layer the three commands we’ve looked at on top of each other as a single command from ARD:

osascript -e 'tell application id "com.apple.ScreenSaver.Engine" to launch' ; killall Keynote ; open /Users/admin/Desktop/Presentationname.key

That would effectively kick off the screen saver, kill keynote while it’s hidden and then open the new presentation. The presentation would need to be transferred to the client system first, but that’s usually the easy part. You could also sleep the commands to bring up different presentations and bolt more logic in, although much of that is best left inside of Keynote itself. If you wanted to get extra crafty, in case the desktop did ever appear, you could have a fail safe of having the screen saver appear as the desktop background, which I wrote up awhile ago here . There are also various kiosk applications that do crazy things like replace the Finder or fire up kioskish (is that a word?!?!) browsers and the such, but all will likely require a little testing and massaging to get just right.

Overall, Apple products can make for pretty good signage options given how well they typically handle various graphics and connectivity, without buying 3rd party tools. You do get what you pay for, so it might be worth looking at some of those tools. Also, it’s worth noting that Rich Trouton wrote up a nice article on using AppleTV for this type of stuff here on his site . I’ve also scripted digital content delivery to Macs using Final Cut Server, CatDV and various scripting tools such as python. We’ve even gone so far as to programatically create the actual Keynote files, but that’s probably best saved for a github gist rather than a https://krypted.com/ post…

Keynote looping

I have created a narrated slide presentation in Keynote. I want it to repeat after a few minutes and restart. I have hit the "Loop" button, "play automatically" and restart if idle after five minutes. It will NOT loop. It returns to the creation page.

Sorry the page timed out before I could send, my full reply was:

Looping does not work with Recorded Slideshows, there are three workarounds I use depending on the situation:

Do not use recorded slideshow, (clear the recording in Play > Clear Recording ) and set the slides to transition at the required time using Delay:

Select the first slide in the Navigator, go to Inspector > Animate , select a transition effect if needed,

in the Start Transition dropdown box; select Automatically

  • in the delay entry box enter a value in seconds for the amount of time the slide should display
  • repeat for the other slides
  • set the presentation to loop in Inspector > Document > Document and select Loop Slideshow in the option box

In Keynote, select Loop ( Inspector > Document > Document > Loop Slideshow ) and record the slideshow advancing through the slides until the last slide when it will loop back to the start, you can continue advancing through the slides again for a second pass, you can do this as many times as needed to obtain the required duration.

Create a Recorded Slideshow then export to Movie ( File > Export > Movie )

Open the movie file in Quicktime Player and set it to loop ( View > Loop ) it will loop continuously until closed.

Looping does not work with Recorded Slideshows, there are two workarounds I use:

Sep 16, 2018 5:36 AM in response to Gary Scotland

Thanks for the suggestions!! Will give them a try. I appreciate it!!

I am finding Apple's apps to be increasingly LESS useful. Not allowing looping with recorded slideshows is yet another example. "Workarounds" for everything might be a good signal for Apple to spend a little more time with their programs.

Sep 17, 2018 6:14 AM in response to Gary Scotland

Will try that. Thanks again!! Currently have a friend with a PC with Powerpoint willing to let me re-record directly into a PP file with my slides transferred. Both options mean more time and effort than should have been necessary, had the designers of Keynote considered someone might want a looping slideshow with sound.

Sep 16, 2018 7:33 AM in response to Gary Scotland

Maybe I'm missing something. I followed directions for "3". There is no sound, despite the original Keynote being a recorded one.

How to Convert Keynote File to Video on iPhone, iPad, and Mac

Apple Keynote is a powerful tool for creating presentations. Also, a Keynote file will only work on a Mac, iPhone, or iPad, for presentation in meetings or conferences. For better compatibility with other systems, you could convert it to a Microsoft Powerpoint file, but that’ll take off all the formatting, animations and design elements from the file.

how to loop keynote presentation

So it’s a good idea to convert the Keynote file to a video and sort all compatibility issues. We’ll show you how to convert a Keynote file into video on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Convert Keynote File to Video on iPhone

The Keynote app on your iPhone allows you to create a quick presentation on the go. It’s also a good way to review a presentation before sharing with others or in a meeting. Most of the times, the conference rooms or meeting locations might not have support for an Apple device – be it the iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Instead of dealing with dongles, you can figure out a better option – convert the file to video.

Here’s how to do it on your iPhone and the same steps apply to the iPad as well.

Step 1:  Open Keynote app on your iPhone. If you don’t have it, get it from the App Store.

Download Keynote App

Step 2:  Open your presentation file.

Step 3:  Tap on the three dots icon at the top.

Step 4: Select Export.

Step 6:  After selecting your preferences, tap on Export.

After Keynote app exports your presentation, you’ll see the share sheet for the file.

Step 7:  Scroll down and select Save Video.

Your iPhone will save your presentation as a video file in the Files app. If you convert the file on your iPad, it will be saved in the Files folder.

2. Convert Keynote File to Video on Mac

A Mac would work great to present your Keynote at a conference or meeting. But if you aren’t carrying it along or allowed to take it along, convert the Keynote file to a video. Plus, you can choose to convert every Keynote file into an MP4 file in advance to avoid any hassles at the time of presentation. To avoid any hiccups, update the Keynote app on your Mac.

Then, follow these steps.

Step 1: Launch the Keynote app on your Mac.

Step 2:  Open the presentation file that you want to convert and click on Open.

Bonus Tip: Add Voiceover

If you wish to record and add a voiceover in your presentation video to make it more insightful, follow these steps.

Step 1:  Open the Keynote presentation.

Step 2:  Click on Play and select Record Slideshow.

You can change the slides using the Left and Right arrow keys while recording the voiceover.

Step 4: Click on the record button again to stop recording.

Step 5: If you wish to record again, click on the Delete icon in the bottom-right corner to erase the previous recording.

Step 7:  After recording your voiceover, click on the X icon in the top-right corner to return to the main screen.

Step 8:  Click on File, select Export To option, and click on Movie to export your file.

Step 9:  Choose your preferences and click on Next.

Step 10:  Click on Export to save your recording.

Keynote will convert and save your video file with a voiceover into an .MP4 file.

Convert Keynote File to Video

Keynote lets you create impressive presentations with all the animations and transitions. However, it can all fall flat if you don’t have the right equipment to present it. That’s why, it’s easier to covert the Keynote file into a video and play it on m0st TVs or projectors.

Below are some of our favorites. And to easily create a professional-looking presentation , sign up for Piktochart . It’s free and it allows you to make beautiful visuals without being a graphic designer.

1. Do your slides last

While most keynote speakers will typically build their presentation around the structure of a template, Weyenberg says that “building your slides should be the tail end of developing your presentation.” Before working on your slides, you should put together your main message, structure, supporting points – then practice and time your presentation. The reason for this, he says, is that the presentation needs to be strong enough to stand on its own. Approaching a keynote like this requires a shift in thinking.

While a beautiful set of slides is imperative to your presentation, it should not be central to it.

Weyenberg said it best: “The slides are just something you layer over [the presentation] to enhance the listener experience.”

Observe these 2017 Google I/O keynotes, especially CEO Sundar Pichai’s – the role of the slides are to support what the speaker is saying – not the other way around.

2. Get creative with photos

Often times, presenters will be far too literal or cheesy with their image choice. Weyenberg suggests to use images that are simple, yet punchy – and pairs nicely with your spoken words. He says to look for photos that are:

  • Related to your keynote’s concept
  • Are not complex in terms of composition

3. Simplify charts and graphs

While most presenters will simply drop an image of their charts and graphs into their deck, Weyenberg points out that it might be a bit “unsightly.” If you need to use data to back a point that you’re making, you should make the extra effort to make it more attractive – and this can be done by recreating it in your presentation maker .

There are a couple benefits to doing this:

  • It will make your presentation seem consistent and well-thought out
  • You’ll have control over colors, typography, and more.

4. One theme per slide

According to the designers of Apple presentation slides, less is certainly more. Trying to cram too many ideas on one slide can only work to your detriment. Beyond ideas, the same goes for statistics.

Let’s play a little game: For the following idea, how many slides would you use? “The developer program is incredibly vibrant. We have over six million registered developers. Demand for this show has never been greater. We sold out in just over a minute [71 seconds].”

While the average person might think that 6 million and 71 seconds would belong on the same slide and be short and sweet enough, let’s compare it with what Apple’s CEO Tim Cook did.

He only leveraged two slides: The first said “6 million,” and the second: “71 seconds. Sold out.”

how to make presentation attractive

5. Create a visual experience with data

Taking a leaf again from Apple’s presentation book, once you’ve gotten the hang of having just one stat per slide – you should also make it as visual as possible.

visual presentations

One data point per slide, combined with it being visually interesting – is sure to be memorable.

6. Practice Really Makes Perfect

Imagine the late Steve Jobs, a legendary keynote presenter, still rehearsed for months before a presentation. According to Brent Schlender , one of the co-authors behind the Steve Jobs biography “Becoming Steve Jobs,” Jobs would rehearse and prepare “exhaustively” for all of his public appearances.

Despite being a natural on the stage, Jobs never would wing it, he came to the show well prepared.

“I once spent an entire day watching him run through multiple rehearsals of a single presentation, tweaking everything from the color and angle of certain spotlights, to editing and rearranging the order of the keynote presentation slides to improve his pacing,” remembers Schlender.

While you may not be a perfectionist like Jobs, you are likely also not nearly as good of a presenter as he is – so practice really makes perfect in this case.

7. Tell A Consistent Story

Circling back to Weyenberg’s tips – he suggests that in a good slide deck, every slide should feel “like part of the same story.” Think of your deck like a story – every slide should feel cohesive to the big picture message you’re trying to communicate – as opposed to random ideas juxtaposed together.

You can do this by:

  • Using the same or similar typography, colors, and imagery across all slides
  • Using presentation templates can help with maintaining the same look and feel

8. Less is more

We explored the less is more concept earlier in the article by suggesting you keep to one idea per slide. The same can be applied to text.

When it comes to creating slides for your next keynote, the cardinal sin is a slide with ample text that is verbatim of your spoken presentation.

What this does is encourage people to keep their eyes on your slides instead of listening to you.

Weyenberg also points out that a text-heavy slide forces the brain to multitask between focusing on what it’s reading and hearing – which is quite difficult and will compromise your presentation.

bad presentation example

9. Consider topic transitions

While you want to make your slides look like a cohesive unit, you want to also keep in mind that making every slide look the same may be boring. Weyenberg suggests to:

  • Create one style for the slides that are the “meat” of the message
  • Then create another style for the slides that are transitioning between topics

For example, if your overall slides have a dark background with light text, you can use transitional slides that have a light background with dark text. This way, they’ll still feel like they’re from the same presentation family without being completely uniform.

10. Tell a captivating story

It is fitting that our final tip comes from likely the greatest keynote presenter of all time. The late and great Steve Jobs had the ability to captivate and inspire his audience with his talks, and that’s because he was a very good storyteller. And that’s the golden leaf that you can take from Jobs’ book today.

Always aim to tell a captivating story.

One example is perhaps when he introduced the iPod: “In 2001, we introduced the first iPod. It didn’t just change the way we all listen to music. It changed the entire music industry.” Listen to Steve Jobs weave a story about the digital music revolution when unveiling the iPod.

Bonus Round: Tips From Piktochart Designers

keynote slide templates

  • Always remember that your audience is sitting far away . So ensure that your title font size is large enough to be seen from a distance, and that your body text is no smaller than 20px.
  • Use only two colors for your entire presentation – a primary and secondary color. If you must use a large color palette, your maximum choice should be up to five colors.
  • Make sure that there is enough white space throughout your presentation . This will give your content room to breathe. Less is definitely more in this case.
  • Emphasize only one object per slide – whether it’s an image, statistic, quote. This will make sure your audience stays focused.

Play a movie or audio across slides in Keynote on iPhone, iPad, or Mac

Add a movie or an audio file to multiple slides and have the movie or audio file keep playing as slides advance — even during transitions between slides.

To play a movie or audio across slides, add the same file to consecutive slides . You can then adjust settings for the file to change how the movie or audio looks and sounds from one slide to the next.

For example, you can  set the volume of the file on each slide independently , or have a movie change position on the slide while still playing through. Animation steps for other objects on the slide like Build In, Action, and Build Out continue to function while a movie plays.

Add a movie or audio file to slides

To play movies or audio across slides, add the file to consecutive slides in your presentation.

Add a movie or audio file to a slide on iPhone or iPad

  • Select the slide that you want the movie or audio file to start playing from.

how to loop keynote presentation

  • To add a movie from your photo library, tap Photo or Video, locate the file, then tap it.
  • To add a movie or an audio file located in iCloud Drive or another location, tap “Insert from,” locate the file, select it, then tap Open.
  • Place the file where you want it to appear on the slide and resize it as necessary.
  • Add the file to each consecutive slide that you want the movie or audio to play across.

how to loop keynote presentation

  • Turn off Play Across Slides for the last slide that you want to play the file across.

When you turn on Play Across Slides on a slide, the movie or audio will play across the next slide, even if you turned the setting off on the next slide. For example, if you want to play a movie across five slides but don't want it to play over the sixth slide, make sure to turn on Play Across Slides on the first four slides. Then turn the setting off on the fifth slide. The movie will play across the fifth slide and will stop when you advance to the sixth slide.

Add a movie or audio file to a slide on Mac

Use movies and audio files that are in a format that QuickTime supports on your Mac. If you can’t add or play a movie or audio file, try using iMovie, QuickTime Player, or Compressor to convert the file to an MPEG-4 file (with an .m4a extension) for audio, or a QuickTime file (with a .mov extension) for a movie.

  • To add a file from your photo library or a song from your music library, click the Media button in the toolbar, click Movies or Music, then drag the file onto the slide.
  • To add a file from iCloud Drive or another location, click Choose, locate the file, then click Insert.
  • Add the file to each consecutive slide you want the movie or audio to play across.
  • On each slide, click the file to select it, click the Format button, click Movie, then turn on “Play movie (audio) across slides.”
  • Turn off “Play movie (audio) across slides” for the last slide you want to play the file across.

When you turn on “Play movie (audio) across slides” on a slide, the movie or audio will play across the next slide, even if you turned the setting off on the next slide. For example, if you want to play a movie across five slides but don't want it to play over the sixth slide, make sure to turn “Play movie across slides” on the first four slides. Then, turn the setting off on the fifth slide. The movie will play across the fifth slide and will stop when you advance to the sixth slide.

Use slide layouts

You can also add movie or audio files to a slide layout, then apply that slide layout to other slides. Movie or audio files will play across any consecutive slides that use the same slide layout. This way, you can create motion backgrounds, and guarantee seamless playback and perfect alignment from slide to slide.

Adjust the volume of the movie or audio file for each slide

You can set the volume of a movie or audio file on each slide independently on Mac, or an audio file on iPhone or iPad. For example, you might want to lower the volume on a slide you're speaking over, then raise it for a slide where you're not speaking.

Adjust the volume of an audio file on iPhone or iPad

  • On the slide you want to adjust, tap the audio file.

how to loop keynote presentation

Adjust the volume of a movie or audio file on Mac

how to loop keynote presentation

  • Drag the Volume control.

Adjust other settings and use transitions when playing movie across slides

You can adjust the position, size, and rotation of the movie from one slide to the next. And, if you're using other transitions, the movie will continue to play on both the outgoing and incoming instances of the transition.

Some animations create interesting effects when playing a movie across slides. When you use Magic Move as a transition animation, the movie continues to play and expands to fill the entire slide as the presentation progresses from the one slide to the next.

If your movie or audio won't play across slides, make sure certain settings match on each slide .

Play across slides when you have long presenter notes

Playing a movie across slides can be useful when you have long presenter notes that won't fit in the Presenter Display. By duplicating a slide with a movie several times and splitting the presenter notes across these slides, you can click to show the next segment of notes while the movie continues to play seamlessly, no matter what transition is used.

If your movie or audio won't play across slides

If your movie or audio won't play across slides, check these settings for each slide you want the file to play across:

  • The Repeat setting (None, Loop, and Loop Back and Forth) for the movie or audio file must be the same on each slide.
  • The trim setting must be the same on each slide (Mac only).
  • If you have a build out on one slide and a build in on the next slide, the movie or audio file won't play across slides.

How To Loop a PowerPoint Presentation

A visually striking PowerPoint presentation can go a long way toward grabbing and keeping people’s attention, whether they’re guests at a wedding or visitors at a museum exhibition. It doesn’t matter whether you want to help the audience retain information or build an emotional connection. Playing the presentation repeatedly in the background can significantly benefit your goal.

How To Loop a PowerPoint Presentation

If you’re unsure how to keep the presentation going without having to restart it manually, you’ve come to the right place. Keep reading to learn how to loop a PowerPoint presentation.

How to Loop a PowerPoint Presentation on a PC

After designing the perfect Microsoft PowerPoint presentation for your event, you can easily tweak the settings to make it loop instead of ending after a single viewing.

  • Open the presentation you want to loop in PowerPoint.

how to loop keynote presentation

If you were to leave it at that, the presentation would loop after finishing, but you would still have to click between the slides to keep it going. So, this option only works if a speaker is present at all times, which is highly unlikely and inconvenient.

Let’s set up an automatic slide transition so the presentation does all the work from beginning to end.

how to loop keynote presentation

The next step is to deal with the “If present” portion of the checkbox. Follow these steps to set up timing for the automatic slide transition.

how to loop keynote presentation

The duration of the slides depends on the content of your presentation. You can move it along a bit faster if it’s an all-picture display. That way, the audience won’t have to stare at a static screen for too long. Otherwise, make sure to leave enough time for people to read the text on each slide, especially if your goal is to inform them about a service or product.

With everything set up, the presentation will reach the last slide on its own. From there, it will automatically loop back to the beginning.

If the presentation is set up where it can’t be monitored at all times, visitors might get impatient and switch the slides manually. Such interference would disable the automatic slide progression. To avoid this, you should change one more setting in your presentation.

The Forward and Back keys will be locked with this show type enabled. No one will be able to disrupt the presentation’s progress. You can hit the Esc button to exit the slideshow when the event has finished.

Before your presentation has its big day, you should ensure everything is set up correctly. To preview your presentation, do the following.

Sit through your presentation and check that it repeats from the beginning once it reaches the final slide. When you’re confident the looping is enabled, press the Esc key and save your work.

How to Loop a PowerPoint Presentation on a TV

While this process is pretty simple, it will only work if your TV supports the PPT format and thus can play a PowerPoint presentation. Not all TVs have this option.

You can use some methods to loop a PowerPoint presentation on a TV that doesn’t support this format.

Connect a Laptop

The simplest solution to your problem is connecting a laptop to your TV using an HDMI cable.

how to loop keynote presentation

Now you can play the looped presentation on your laptop, which will keep going on your TV until you manually stop it.

Use a PowerPoint TV Player

You’ll need an alternative solution if you can’t leave your laptop connected to the TV for a prolonged period. Another great way to play a self-running presentation on your TV is to use a PowerPoint player called PowerPlayer . This product supports the native PNG format; you can simply plug it into any TV you’d like.

Can You Loop a PowerPoint Presentation on an iPad? Not Directly

Although available on iPad, the PowerPoint app doesn’t offer the same auto-play functionality as the PC version. You can always loop your presentation on a computer and play it on your iPad. However, if you’d like to loop the presentation directly on the device, you’ll have to open it using Apple’s native presentation app, Keynote .

Now that your presentation is set to advance automatically, the only thing left is to arrange the looping.

Keep Everyone in the Loop

After spending a lot of time making your PowerPoint presentation informative and aesthetically pleasing, you’ll want to display it proudly for the world to see. Playing it once is certainly not enough, so you’ll want to loop your presentation and ensure everyone gets the chance to see it. While creating the perfect presentation can be time-consuming, looping it is a simple process that will take you no more than a few minutes.
