How to Pass the CSCS Exam

How to study effectively.

Your success on CSCS test day depends not only on how many hours you put into preparing but also on whether you prepared the right way. It’s good to check along the way to see whether your studying is paying off. One of the most effective ways to do this is by taking CSCS practice tests to evaluate your progress. Practice tests are useful because they show exactly where you need to improve. Every time you take a free CSCS exam practice test, pay special attention to these three groups of questions:

  • The questions you got wrong
  • The ones you had to guess on, even if you guessed right
  • The ones you found difficult or slow to work through

This will show you exactly what your weak areas are and where you need to devote more study time. Ask yourself why each of these questions gave you trouble. Was it because you didn’t understand the material? Was it because you didn’t remember the vocabulary? Do you need more repetitions on this type of question to build speed and confidence? Dig into those questions and figure out how you can strengthen your weak areas as you go back to review the material.

Answer Explanations

Additionally, many CSCS practice tests have a section explaining the answer choices. It can be tempting to read the explanation and think that you now have a good understanding of the concept. However, an explanation likely only covers part of the question’s broader context. Even if the explanation makes sense, go back and investigate every concept related to the question until you’re positive you have a thorough understanding.

Comprehend Each Topic

As you go along, keep in mind that the CSCS practice test is just that: practice. Memorizing these questions and answers will not be very helpful on the actual test because it is unlikely to have any of the same exact questions. If you only know the right answers to the sample questions, you won’t be prepared for the real thing. Study the concepts until you understand them fully, and then you’ll be able to answer any question that shows up on the test.

Strategy for CSCS Practice

When you’re ready to start taking practice tests, follow this strategy:

  • Remove Limitations. Take the first test with no time constraints and with your notes and CSCS study guide handy. Take your time and focus on applying the strategies you’ve learned.
  • Time Yourself. Take the second practice test “open book” as well, but set a timer and practice pacing yourself to finish in time.
  • Simulate Test Day. Take any other practice tests as if it were test day. Set a timer and put away your study materials. Sit at a table or desk in a quiet room, imagine yourself at the testing center, and answer questions as quickly and accurately as possible.
  • Keep Practicing. Keep taking practice tests on a regular basis until you run out of practice tests or it’s time for the actual test. Your mind will be ready for the schedule and stress of test day, and you’ll be able to focus on recalling the material you’ve learned.

How hard is the CSCS exam?

The exam is considered to be moderately difficult, with a pass rate of 57%.

How long is the CSCS exam?

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is the cscs exam hard.

While the CSCS online course is no walk in the park, the CSCS can be quite a challenging test as well. Its pass rate is right around 56%, so you are almost as likely to pass your first test as you are to fail. The percentage needed to pass is 70%, which is generally considered generous as far as certifications go. The CSCS test questions are known to be more challenging than simply defining what something is or simple true and false questions. So, the CSCS is considered to be a long and challenging test, so you will need to pay attention.

How many questions are there in the CSCS exams, and what is a passing grade?

The CSCS exam is split into two sections. Section one has 80 scored questions and 15 questions that are not scored. The second section of the test is made up of 110 scored questions and 15 non-scored questions. The total number of CSCS questions is 220, and these are all multiple-choice questions. A passing score on the exam is a 70%. It is a good idea to take CSCS mock tests and really examine the CSCS practice questions test.

Where can you take the CSCS exam?

You can take the mock test CSCS and the regular test at the nearest Pearson VUE testing center. There are several of these centers throughout the nation. Make sure to look into the Pearson site to find the closest one to you, and check the calendar for CSCS test dates. There will be many CSCS exam dates to choose from, so be sure it fits in your schedule and that you are ready to test.

What happens if you fail the CSCS exam?

You have a slightly higher chance of passing than failing, but still, it is a high chance of not passing. For this, consider the option of a retake. To qualify for a retake, you have to wait 90 days to retake the exam since the last time it was taken. You can register for a retake 5 days after a failed exam. The option to take the exam again is unlimited. You will only need to resubmit the AED/CPR information if it has expired. One really good thing is, if you only fail one of the sections, you will only need to retake it, not the other one, so it is important to note that.

How long after the exam will I receive the certificate?

After the NSCA CSCS exam has been completed and passed, you will receive the certification package in 6 – 8 working weeks. The certificate is not available in any form online.

How long is the certification valid?

The certification is good for 3 whole years from the date of passing the CSCS exam. The exam will need to be retaken before this certification expires. If the certification has expired, you may petition for being reinstated as long as you have all of the CEU during the normal period of 3 years, you submitted proof of them being earned, you have a verified and current AED/CPR certification, and you have paid the reinstatement and recertification fees in the right time frame.

How much does the CSCS exam cost?

For a member of the NSCA, the exam registration fee is 340 dollars, the retake for both sections is 340 dollars, and the retake fee for just one section is 250 dollars. For someone who is not a member, the exam registration fee is 475 dollars, the retake fee for both sections is 475 dollars, and the retake fee is 385 dollars for just one section.

Where can I find more study materials and test prep for the CSCS?

CSCS online study guides are helpful for preparation. When studying for CSCS, it is important to get as many CSCS practice exam questions as you can, as the material is quite challenging. The strength and conditioning test from NSCA is challenging, and you can’t go wrong with additional study materials offered here on Trainer Academy, and also the free study materials from PTpioneer.

What other study materials can I use to prepare for the CSCS?

Studying for the CSCS NSCA offers can be challenging and requires a good amount of time to prepare. I offer some great resources here at Trainer Academy. The paid CSCS exam study guide will ensure a passing grade. We also offer support study materials such as CSCS flashcards and audio guides in the paid study systems. If you want to check out more free study items and CSCS prep, PTPioneer has excellent CSCS study materials and CSCS study questions. It is important to get as much CSCS exam prep as possible. They also have NASM materials and much more.

The last study tip I have for you for the CSCS exam is to use memorization mnemonics, which can really work wonders for difficult-to-remember topics from the textbook.

This is an excellent way for students to take the education and hammer it home with details that anyone, everyone, and all individuals and learners can utilize to ensure the CSCS training courses have the intended effect: passing the CSCS exam.

Another great technique is using spaced repetition flashcards.

These use an algorithm to learn which flashcards you already know and which flashcards you have trouble with.

Implementing these into your studies makes it easier for you to pass your final exam and earn your precious strength and conditioning cert.

If you want to become a personal trainer , then I recommend the NSCA-CPT, but also the following:

  • National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM)
  • American Council on Exercise (ACE)
  • American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)
  • International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA)

These are all rated as some of the best personal trainer certifications .

For example, take a look through some of the personal trainer certification practice preparation from NASM vs. ACE .

  • NASM study guide
  • NASM practice test
  • ACE study guide
  • ACE practice test

There are also more great materials and exam information found when exploring NASM vs. ISSA .

One good thing about exam cheat sheets is that they reduce the overall time it takes to become a personal trainer, or in this case, a strength and conditioning coach.

They are all accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), which is a non-profit organization and the gold standard accreditation in the fitness industry.

NCCA-accredited certifications also open the door to many great career opportunities.

In case you want to become a nutrition coach , there are plenty of nutrition certifications to choose from.

It’s also worth sharing that having more than just a personal trainer certification will increase your overall personal trainer salary .

Areas similar to fitness and wellness and maximizing performance is always expanding, hence why the personal trainer job outlook is expected to continue to flourish.

Even if you want to become a group exercise instructor , there are a ton of group fitness certifications up for grabs.

Just do your research.

And with the popularity of the internet, I wouldn’t be surprised if you want to become an online personal trainer .

If you put your mind to it, and you want to make money as a personal trainer, then there’s no question you’ll make it as a successful online trainer .

Overall, the NSCA CSCS is one of my all-time favorite strength and conditioning courses, and I hope my article taught you a lot more.

Behavioural Case Study Questions

As of April 2012, the CSCS Test or what’s technically known as the CITB Health Safety and Environment Test has added a new feature called behavioural case study questions . With the core components of the original CSCS card test remaining the same, this new feature will test your reaction and behaviour towards different health and safety situations as they unfold on site.

cscs case study questions 2021

As we all know, a construction site can be a very dangerous place to work, hazards can develop in a matter of seconds and the way you respond and react to certain situations could make a big difference in the outcome.

The Health Safety and Environment Test lasts for 45 minutes and consists of 50 multiple-choice questions , 38 of these questions are in a basic multiple-choice format where you’re given a question and multiple possible answers to choose from; make sure you read the question carefully as some questions will require multiple answers. The remaining 12 questions will be the behavioural case study questions.

Regardless of which type of CSCS test you’re taking, whether it’s the normal operative test, specialist test or the test for managers and professionals, you’ll need to answer the same amount of behavioural case study questions (12) and the same amount of knowledge questions (38).

Even though it’s the same amount of questions the level of difficulty will vary accordingly so make sure you get the right revision book for your test.

These 12 behavioural case study questions are focused primarily on the 10 principles discussed in the short film “ Setting Out ”. This is an 11-minute video presentation that you’ll need to watch before taking the test, it goes into detail about the safety measures your employers need to take on your behalf and it also offers valuable tips and information on how you can do your part in maintaining a safe working environment.

Tip: you should pause the video at regular intervals to take your own revision notes.

How the behavioural case study questions work

In total there are 12 behavioural case study questions which are divided into 3 case studies, each case study consists of 4 multiple-choice questions. For each question you’ll have to follow along a fictional character as he/she encounters different safety-critical situations onsite, every time a situation arises you’ll have to choose the best possible answer then move forward; every answer you give will determine the next question or situation you face. Once you’ve selected an answer there’s no going back so make sure you’re completely satisfied with your answer before moving on.

Here’s a behavioural case study example (it’s not an actual question from the test, just an example of what a question will look like)

Mark’s about to start his first day on the job, when he arrives the site is completely empty. He should:

a. Start walking around the site and familiarize himself with what’s going on.

b. Wait for a member of management to arrive and give him an induction.

c. Start tidying up what others left behind the previous day.

d. Commence working to get an early start.

Correct Answer: B

When management finally arrives they inform Mark that work on this project is way behind schedule and assigns him to his area immediately. He should:

a. Proceed to his designated area and start working immediately.

b. Ask a colleague if there’s any hazard he should be aware of.

c. Request a site induction as he’ll need some basic information to carry out his work safely.

d. Visit different parts of the site on his own to familiarize himself with the different areas.

Correct Answer: C

During the site induction, Mark is given some notes regarding health and safety procedures onsite, there’s one particular part of the procedure he doesn’t understand. He should:

a. Worry about it later as they’re already running behind schedule.

b. Ask a fellow colleague to explain it in detail.

c. Return at the end of the day for further explanation.

d. Immediately request further clarification.

Correct Answer: D

After completing the induction, Mark is given a task that requires him to wear a dust mask but he can’t find one. He should:

a. Carry on without it.

b. Inform his supervisor

c. Use a colleague’s even though it is much bigger than what he needs.

d. Use a wet towel and cover his nose and mouth

I hope this brief explanation of the behavioural case study questions has shed some light on what you can expect from these 12 questions. Please use the example question above to familiarize yourself with the structure of these case study questions and keep practicing with our other CSCS mock test questions .

CITB Behavioural Case Study Practice Test

The CITB behavioural case study practice test below is an example of what you will face when taking your real CSCS test.

If you’re taking the test for the first time or if you’ve taken it before April 2012 then this section will be new to you and you should definitely practice with these case study example questions.

The behavioural case study section of the test consists of 12 multiple choice questions (3 scenarios with 4 questions each) which are aimed at testing your reaction to health and safety situations as they unfold on-site, you will need to put yourself in the shoes of the person in the question and choose what he/she should do every time a new situation arises.

Here’s a quick behavioural case study practice test

1. John turns up for work on his first day; he is running a bit late and rushes into the office where his supervisor is waiting to give him his site induction. During his site induction the supervisor explains where the fire assembly point is located but John seems confused and can’t quite figure out where he should go if there’s a fire evacuation. What should John do?

2. After completing his induction, John is taken to his work area, he’s given ear defenders because he will be working in a hearing protection zone. John puts on the ear defenders but he notices that one pad in missing. What should John do?

3. John completes his task in the hearing protection zone and he’s heading to the canteen for his break. On his way there he notices a loose panel hanging from the ceiling which no one else seems to notice. What should John do?

4. After returning from his break, John is given a task which requires him to wear a full body harness but he’s never worn one before. What should John do?

My Experience helping students pass the CSCS exam

The National Strength and Conditioning Association Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (NSCA CSCS) is the most reputable strength and conditioning certification in the United States and is a requirement for most collegiate, high school, and general strength and conditioning.

This article provides a comprehensive practice CSCS exam based on my experience helping thousands of students become NSCA CSCS-certified. It covers virtually everything you need to effectively prepare for your CSCS final test.

What is the CSCS exam?

The CSCS exam is the final hurdle to becoming certified as strength and conditioning specialist and kicking off your athletic performance coaching career. The test itself is incredibly rigorous. It is NCCA-accredited to ensure it meets the highest standards of skills and knowledge. However, the test goes above and beyond virtually any other NCCA-accredited exam in terms of its difficulty and preparation requirements.

Understanding the CSCS Exam

Cscs exam info table.

CSCS exam info table

CSCS Exam Career Impact

When it comes to your strength and conditioning coach career, there is no greater certification that can impact your career compared to the NSCA CSCS. Regardless of what level of athlete you want to coach or your long term strength and conditioning coach career aspirations, you absolutely need to get your CSCS certification.

CSCS Exam Breakdown

The CSCS exam covers a total of seven different domains of knowledge in two different test sections. You can retake test sections individually if you fail one or the other, but you need to get a passing score of 70% or more on every subsection, independent of your total final score.

The domains on your CSCS exam are as follows, note that the percentages of questions are for each section, not the total exam:

Section One: Scientific Foundations

  • Domain 1: Exercise Science – 55%
  • Domain 2: Sport Psychology – 23.7%
  • Domain 3: Nutrition – 21.3%

Section Two: Practical/Applied

  • Domain 4: Exercise Technique – 36%

Effective CSCS Study Strategies

Based on my experience helping students pass their CSCS exam, I recommend the following tips and strategies to maximize your chances of passing on your first try:

  • Practice Exams: Be sure to take our CSCS practice exam to familiarize yourself with the format and types of questions you will encounter. This not only highlights your weak areas but also helps in honing your test-taking skills. Aim to understand the rationale behind each question instead of rote memorization.
  • Core Concepts Mastery: Make sure to grasp the key concepts and terminology specific to strength and conditioning. Reviewing textbook summaries, taking chapter quizzes, and consistently working through practice questions are effective strategies.
  • Scientific Principles and Applied Knowledge: Have a strong command of the scientific principles of strength and conditioning, such as exercise physiology, biomechanics, and nutrition. Additionally, ensure you understand practical applications like the program design, periodization models, and sport-specific training protocols.
  • Make Use of CSCS Study Aids: Take advantage of my CSCS cheat sheet , specifically designed for the CSCS exam to review important concepts quickly.
  • Supplement with Third-Party Study Resources: Consider investing in reputable third-party study materials and courses that offer structured study plans, additional practice questions, and more in-depth explanations of complex topics. My students recommend the Trainer Academy CSCS MVP Prep Course .
  • Understand the Performance Domains: Ensure that you have a thorough understanding of the CSCS performance domains—such as needs analysis, exercise technique, program design, organization and administration, and testing and evaluation.
  • Consistent Scoring on Practice Tests: Before scheduling your exam, ensure that you can consistently score well on practice tests. A good benchmark would be to consistently achieve at least a 70-75% pass rate, considering the difficulty of the CSCS exam.
  • Real-World Applications: If possible, gain practical experience by working with athletes or within a strength and conditioning setting. Hands-on experience can provide a deeper understanding of concepts and techniques that you will be tested on.
  • Stay Current on Research: The CSCS exam will test your knowledge of current practices and research in the field of strength and conditioning. Regularly reading relevant journals and articles can be very helpful.
  • Time Management: Develop effective time management skills for the exam. Practice pacing yourself with timed quizzes to ensure you can complete the exam within the allotted time.
  • Review the NSCA Guidelines: Familiarize yourself with the NSCA’s position stands and guidelines, as these often form the basis for exam questions.
  • Register for NSCA Workshops: If available, attend NSCA’s own CSCS preparation workshops for in-depth reviews and insights from qualified instructors.

CSCS Exam Tips & Tricks – How to Pass the CSCS Exam

Free CSCS Practice Tests in 2023 - Over 290+ CSCS Practice Test Questions

If you take the CSCS certification exam for the first time or retake it, everyone should be able to use the advice to help with this challenging test.

The first main tip is to use all of the CSCS mock tests, and CSCS mock questions in this article, as you want to get as much practice as possible before the CSCS examination.

Practice makes perfect, and since these tests and quizzes emulate the exact questions you will find on the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s Strength and Conditioning Specialist exam. Whether you want your own strength and conditioning business or plan to work for a gym, passing the CSCS gives you everything you need in terms of skills to kickoff your strength and conditioning career.

CSCS Practice questions help prepare for the same thinking and understanding needed when certifying.

The next major tip is to utilize other forms of study that will help with memorizing terms and topics, like flashcard studying, which we include within the main study hub. Application of various CSCS training courses helps improve your chances of successful completion and earning your CSCS certification.

Flashcard study helps create easy study habits that are consistent enough for any person to carry over in the long term.

Another great study tip would be to utilize a cheat sheet for the test as you take on some of the more challenging questions to get the right material while practicing.

The cheat sheet offered on this study hub will work perfectly and has been proven to help many learners.

The last tip is for all test-takers to get good rest and sleep before the testing day. It is crazy how much better you do on a test when you sleep 8 hours.

And make sure to check through the practice questions below to see the thought process when answering CSCS questions during the exam.

How the CSCS Exam is Scored

The CSCS exam is broken into two separate sections. The first section has 80 scored and 15 non-scored multiple-choice questions. The second section has 110 scored and 15 non-scored multiple-choice questions. This gives you a total of 220 multiple-choice questions. Within each section, there are various subdomains of knowledge.

You need to score a 70% across all subdomains to pass. You will fail the exam if your overall score is above 70% but receive less than 70% on a single subdomain.

Strategy for CSCS Practice Exam

The best strategy for the CSCS exam is to learn knowledge across all the subdomains. It is not worth mastering a single domain but having gaps in the other since you must pass across all knowledge subdomains. Setting a study schedule is a great way to set yourself up for success. Once you map out your plan, you can complete your NSCA CSCS exam registration, members’ or non-members’ pricing, and be one step closer to your career as a strength coach.
