Who’s Xavi?: The Mexican-American Artist Triumphing with ‘La Diabla’

The songwriter is rising to the top of the global charts with his 'tumbado' music.

Facebook

Just a year ago, very few people worldwide knew about Mexican ‘corridos tumbados’ music . But everything changed when Peso Pluma and Eslabón Armando’s hit song «Ella baila sola» took the global stage, winning over audiences everywhere. This song marked a turning point, propelling the genre into the mainstream as one of today’s hottest music trends .

Recently, Xavi made an impressive debut in Spotify’s Global Top Charts with his song «La Diabla.» What’s remarkable is that he achieved this just a week after Christmas, following Mariah Carey’s tradition of keeping «All I Want For Christmas» locked away until November 2024.

«La Diabla,» with a daily streaming count of four million plays, even outperformed Tate McRae’s «Greedy.» And Xavi didn’t stop there; he also introduced the song «La Víctima» to a wider audience. But what does «La Diabla» sound like?

«La Diabla «: A Love-Struck ‘ Tumbado’

«La Diabla» is a track Xavi released last November, telling the story of falling for someone with a darker side. In his lyrics, he says, “I’m the bad influence, and that’s what you liked. You’re a troublemaker, it’s evident, my love. You’re a devil, see how you dance. On a scale of one to ten, you’re a million.”

The song comes with a music video showing Xavi enjoying a college house party, where he meets the woman he affectionately calls «La Diabla.» This song is also gaining traction on YouTube’s global charts , confirming its status as a bona fide hit.

Who is Xavi, And What’s His Musical Journey?

Joshua Xavier Gutiérrez, a 19-year-old Mexican-American singer-songwriter, is making a name for himself in the music industry thanks to the success of «La Diabla» and «La Víctima.»   When he broke into Billboard’s global top charts in December, Xavi couldn’t believe his luck : “Seeing the artists and songs in the top 10 is an incredible honor. I’m profoundly grateful to my team and all the fans who have supported this song. I genuinely feel blessed.”

Currently signed with Interscope, one of the world’s most prominent music labels , there’s no doubt that Xavi is on the path to becoming a genuine star. Notably, among his Instagram followers are artists like Karol G .

The Mexican-American artist started his musical journey as a teenager, releasing his debut single «Vete Ya» in 2020 at the tender age of 16. This track blended reggaeton with pop elements. Without a doubt, we’ll be closely following Xavi’s promising career.

N ot many players can boast of being physical embodiments of a football style, but Xavi Hernandez is certainly one of them, but on the same time heir to players such as Josep Samitier and Pep Guardiola. With his tremendous vision, superb technical skills, and perfect passing game, Xavi was the ideal match for the passing-focused tiki-taka. He’s one of the most decorated Spanish players of all time, having won eight La Liga titles, four Champions Leagues, two European Championships, and one World Cup.

Basic facts

Birth: 1980 Country: Spain Position: Midfielder

Barcelona (1997-2015) Al Sadd (2015-2019)

Club football: 505 matches, 58 goals National team: 133 matches, 13 goals

The kid from La Masia

At the age of 11, Xavi joined Barcelona’s youth academy called La Masia. This was the first and one of the most important steps in his career, as he was able to learn Barcelona’s team-first philosophy from the get-go. In the following years, he slowly advanced through the club’s youth teams until he arrived at Barcelona B in 1997. He soon became a key member of the squad, helping them secure a promotion to the Second Division.

His first-team debut arrived in 1998, in a Copa Catalunya match against Lleida. A few months later, he scored his first goal in the Super Cup final against Mallorca. Though he was initially featured for both the senior and reserve team, a streak of impressive performances led to him becoming a full-part first-team member. In 1999, he helped Barcelona win a La Liga title and was named Breakthrough Player of the Year.

Top of the world

With Pep Guardiola’s injury and subsequent departure, Xavi established himself as the team’s number one playmaker. However, the first few years of the new century were tough on Barcelona, as the team struggled with serious financial issues. The new president Joan Laporta brought the club back to its feet by hiring a new manager -- Frank Rijkaard -- and international stars such as Ronaldinho, Deco, and Samuel Eto’o.

By this point, Xavi was ready to be a key player of the new, potent offense that saw Barcelona win two consecutive La Liga titles in 2005 and 2006. The following year, they also reached the Champions League final, where they came back from behind to triumph 2-1 over Arsenal. The next two seasons were disappointing for both Xavi and Barcelona, as a string of freak injuries and a lack of form led to failing to win any major trophies.

In 2008, Barcelona brought this bad streak to an end by appointing Pep Guardiola as coach. One of the first things Guardiola did was to convince Xavi that he was too important to leave the club. Under the new coach, Xavi became the fulcrum of the tiki-taka philosophy that saw the club claim three straight La Liga titles and two Champions League trophies from 2009 to 2011. During this period, Xavi was La Liga’s top assist provider on two separate occasions.

International trifecta

The tiki-taka style carried over to the Spanish national team, with Xavi having an identical role as in Barcelona. In 2008, he was pivotal to Spain winning the European Championship , their first major tournament in 44 years. In addition to dominating the midfield, he put Spain on the scoresheet in the semi-finals against Russia and assisted Torres for the winning goal in the final against Germany. For his performances, he was named Player of the Tournament.

Two years later, Xavi helped Spain win its first-ever World Cup. Despite a surprising loss in the tournament opener against Switzerland, Spain recovered in time and proceeded to win throughout the rest of the competition. Xavi started every game and recorded the most (599) successful passes at the tournament. He provided two key passes for Spain’s goal winners in the round of 16 against Portugal and the semi-finals against Germany.

In 2012, Xavi broke the European Championship record for most passes in a single match, recording 127 passes in a 4-0 drubbing of Northern Ireland. Spain went on to claim its third consecutive major tournament, with Xavi mostly providing support to his natural successor Andres Iniesta. Still, he produced two assists in a 4-0 victory against Italy in the final, cementing his place in another Team of the Tournament.

Later career

Following these international exploits, Xavi started to focus on club competitions in order to preserve his body towards the end of his career. He was instrumental in Barcelona winning two more La Liga titles in 2013 and 2015, as well as the Champions League in 2015. The same year, he finished his career at Barcelona as the most capped player in the history of the club, having played 767 games in all competitions and scoring 85 goals.

He went on to play four more seasons at the Qatari club Al-Saad, helping the team win the Qatar Stars League in 2019. He retired from professional football at the end of that season but decided to stay in Qatar to pursue a coaching career. That summer, he signed his first managerial contract and took over as the coach of Al-Saad.

00_XAVI_HERNANDEZ

Born in Terrassa on 25 January 1980, Xavi Hernández became first team manager in November 2021. Thus began his second spell at FC Barcelona. His first era at the club was a huge success and lasted 24 years; he started as an U12 and progressed all the way up to the first team. He then left Barça for Al Sadd in Qatar and with that experienced learned, he is coming back home.

It all started in 1991/92. He tried different positions before settling for midfield, where he’d gain a place of honour in FC Barcelona history. Since making his first team debut in 1998 under coach Louis van Gaal, Xavi was a regular starter for 17 seasons, always performing brilliantly and helping the side to 25 titles.

After displaying such a footballing brain in the middle of the park, with the ball almost sewn to his foot, the Barça captain departed for Doha. After playing for Al Sadd, he then became the coach and in two and half season he led the team to success and further success – seven trophies in all.

Aside from the material success in the form of silverware, more importantly, he was able to deploy the famous Barça system in the midst of Qatari football. It was all about building up plays from the back, putting together combinations of passes and placing the perfect through balls to the forwards. And whenever the team lost the ball, immediately smothering them to get it back as quickly as possible. He managed to convey all of his Barça DNA to those players, and now looks forward to doing the same as it his beloved lifetime club, FC Barcelona.

Arriving in November 2021, Xavi helped the blaugranes to runners up in the league in 2021/22. In his first full season in charge the coach led Barça to the La Liga and Spanish Super Cup double, claiming the league title for the first time since 2018/19.

In September 2023 the coach signed a contract extension until June 2025 with the option of an additional year.

Recognizing his son’s potential, Regillio Simons enrolled him at CD Thader in 2008. However, after two years, Xavi’s progress wasn’t in line with his father’s expectations.

Subsequently, in 2010, he joined the youth academy of Barcelona, where he trained at La Masia, the same prestigious academy that has produced football legends like Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi .

Xavi Simons Bio – Formative Years in Football:

In no time, the young prodigy showcased remarkable development. He swiftly rose to prominence as a crucial member of Barcelona’s youth lineup.

His playstyle was robust, shining both in attacking and defensive roles.

Simons, along with contemporaries like Pablo Gavi from the same academy, exhibited immense discipline and poise on the field. His leadership qualities didn’t go unnoticed, eventually earning him the captain’s armband. Predictably, under his leadership, the team clinched numerous victories in key tournaments.

His prowess on the pitch caught the attention of elite clubs, including Real Madrid and Chelsea.

Yet, the young star chose Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in 2019 after Barcelona couldn’t meet his contractual expectations .

Xavi Simons Bio – Ascend to Stardom:

After joining PSG, national selectors took notice. Simons was soon donning the Dutch colours in international fixtures, playing for the U16, U17, and U19 squads from 2019 to 2021.

His dedication and hard work at PSG bore fruit two years later when he made his Ligue 1 debut. He kicked off his senior professional journey impressively.

Observations suggest that Simons is poised to be a pivotal figure in Mauricio Pochettino’s plans, although some media sources hint at him experiencing challenges similar to Neymar .

Xavi Simons Bio – Touchstone of Triumph:

Following his taste of top-tier league matches, Simons returned to train with the PSG U19 team, hinting that PSG might be grooming him to be the successor to talents like Julian Draxler.

By the time of this profile’s compilation, Simons was highlighted in the Guardian’s Next Generation 2020.

Further elevating his young career, Simons clinched his inaugural professional accolade, the Coupe de France, with PSG in May 2021.

Xavi made waves in the accomplished team of Ruud van Nistelrooy’s PSV alongside renowned players like Cody Gakpo and Noni Madueke . He and notables like Moussa Diaby and Alexander Isak are on the fast-rising lane. Xavi remains one of the youngsters to watch in the 2023/2024 season. The rest, as we say, is history.

Xavi Simons’ Personal Life:

Given his footballing prowess and appeal, many of his admirers are curious about his romantic engagements. But their quests often return empty-handed, with scant information on his dating life.

Undoubtedly, his charisma might pique the interest of many, yet Simons appears more engrossed in honing his craft than in romantic escapades. At the moment of this write-up, Simons remains unattached.

Xavi Simons’ Off-Pitch Persona:

Delving beyond the football field, what truly drives this Dutch prodigy? Remarkably, he’s crafted a charismatic aura that’s significantly elevated his stature, especially on social platforms. At the time of penning this account, Xavi Simons boasts an impressive three million-strong following on Instagram.

When not dazzling on the football pitch, he’s often spotted wielding a tennis racket, reflecting his passion for lawn tennis. A snapshot captures his finesse on the tennis court.

While he’s naturally amiable, Simons is discerning about the boundaries he establishes. Moments find him retreating to serene spaces, basking in the tranquillity of nature, evident from certain photographs.

Xavi Simons’ Way of Life:

The young talent seems to be gradually embracing a lavish lifestyle reminiscent of stars like Kylian Mbappe . With a budding career, Simons commands an annual pay of €1 million, impressive for his age.

He’s occasionally shared glimpses of his opulent abode on social media. Further, he’s treated himself to an array of luxury vehicles, underscoring his rising stature.

It’s worth noting his partnership with global sportswear giant, Nike. An advertisement showcasing him endorsing Airmax270 offers a sneak peek into this association.

Dynamics of Xavi Simons’ Family:

The football universe owes a chunk of its exhilaration to the support system behind this rising star. Indeed, Simons is nurtured by a family deeply rooted in football, prioritizing collective achievement.

Their unwavering backing has catapulted him into the spotlight. Here, we delve into fascinating details about his close-knit family.

Regarding Xavi Simons’ Father:

The linchpin, Regillio Simons, is Xavi’s paternal anchor. Once a stalwart in elite Dutch leagues, post-retirement he pursued and secured the UEFA Pro Licence.

Embarking on his managerial journey in 2005, Regillio has helmed several outfits, notably one of Ajax’s illustrious youth setups.

Regillio remains a beacon for his offspring. Predictably, he’s an omnipresent figure in pivotal milestones of their journey. His principled approach has indubitably moulded his sons into commendable individuals.

Insights into Xavi Simons’ Mother:

Influenced by his endearing character, it’s evident that Xavi received a bounty of love and care from his mother. Named Peggy Simons, she adeptly bridges the communication between Xavi and his father. From his tender years, Peggy discerned her son’s budding talent on the football pitch.

Always standing firmly behind his endeavours, Peggy undoubtedly is Xavi’s staunchest supporter.

Dynamics of Xavi Simons’ Siblings:

During his formative years, solitude was a stranger to Xavi. He was frequently in the delightful company of his elder brother, Faustino. Intriguingly, the brothers share the same birthdate, and their shared journey has only bolstered the bond between them. They’ve consistently been pillars of support for one another’s pursuits.

A Glimpse into Xavi Simons’ Extended Family:

Beyond his immediate family, Xavi cherishes the bond he shares with his cousins, namely Ojani, Codylian, and Tyrese Simons. Of them, his camaraderie with Ojani stands out the most. At the moment, there isn’t much documented about his grandparents or any details about his aunts and uncles.

Little-known Aspects of Xavi Simons:

To offer a comprehensive view of this budding football sensation, here are some lesser-known tidbits to complete the picture.

The Backstory behind Simons’ Name:

Xavi’s mother was enamoured with the Barcelona legend, Xavi Hernandez. Inspired by her admiration, she wished to christen her son “Xavi”.

While his father initially had reservations, she managed to sway him. Interestingly, despite being named after Hernandez, Xavi’s idol in football is not Kevin de Bruyne  but turned out to be Iniesta.

Financial Overview and Salary Details:

As mentioned before, the young footballer has been commanding an impressive paycheck at Paris Saint-Germain.

As per the data available at the time of writing this profile, Simons has an annual remuneration of €1 million.

From the figures, his estimated net worth stands at a substantial €4 million. An intriguing comparison: the typical Dutch individual would need to work for two years to accumulate what Simons bags in just one month.

Let’s take a real-time look at his earnings, analyzing how much he’s accumulated since you started reading this.

What is Xavi Simons’ Religion?

The rising star is openly devoted to his faith. Brought up in a Christian household, he has developed a deep respect and affinity for Christianity.

A highlight of his year is undoubtedly the Christmas festivities spent surrounded by family. The joy of the season, amplified by the gifts and the festivities, is evident. Just take a look at the sheer joy radiating from him in the picture beside the Christmas tree.

FIFA Statistics:

A glance at his current stats and it’s evident that Simons (who is on a similar level to Morgan Gibbs-White) has some distance to cover before reaching the likes of Ilkay Gundogan and Nicolo Barella .

However, with dedication and persistent effort, he has the potential to even outshine players like Donny van de Beek and Frenkie de Jong.

For that ascent, focusing on improving his strength and endurance will be key. With continued hard work, his overall ratings will only soar higher.

Final Thoughts:

A significant catalyst in Simons’ ascent to prominence was undoubtedly his father, Regillio. But it was Xavi’s relentless commitment and passion that saw him being recognized by PSG’s elite squad.

While his parents laid the foundational pathway to success, Xavi faced numerous challenges, navigating them mostly on his own.

With unwavering guidance from his coaches and the undying support of his family, the thought of abandoning his football dreams never found a place in Simons’ heart.

It’s the collective hope of many that he sees more action on the field in the near future. We appreciate you delving into the journey and story of Xavi Simons with us.

Xavi Hernandez Biography – Relationship Life:

A recent online report in Peru’s Libero claims that Barcelona and Spain teammates Xavi Hernandez and Carles Puyol were in love with the same girl.

She is the fashion journalist Nuria Cunillera. Both fought over her back in 2012.

Once upon a time, Xavi and Puyol were in love with the same girl.

The Libero report says that both players had ended their relationships with their respective girlfriends at the time and fell in love with hottie Cunillera thereafter.

Puyol probably knew that Cunillera could love Xavi more. Yet, he pursued his interest in the lady.

The situation threatened to boil over when the two players confronted each other and nearly came to blows over Cunillera. Thankfully, things did not go out of hand.

However,  the two players have not been on the best of terms ever since the ugly incident occurred.

It was Xavi who later went on to quickly ask Nuria Cunillera’s hands in marriage. Both celebrated their marriage in 2013. It was a ceremony that was attended by the majority of his Barca teammates.

Nuria Cunillera and Xavi, on their wedding day.

The ceremony was attended by most of Xavi’s Barcelona teammates, including Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta , Cesc Fabregas , Jordi Alba, Victor Valdes, Javier Mascherano and Pedro Rodriguez .

However, Puyol did not attend the function. I am guessing you know why. Their daughter, Asia, was born on January 3, 2016.

The player admitted in the press conference that it was the right time to leave. “I had to wait until things went better to leave through the big door”.  Xavi shed some tears after saying his final goodbyes.

Xavi Hernandez Biography – What we will remember him for:

  • For being one of the best central midfielders of all time

Napoli visit begins Xavi's final chance of Barca pride

Xavi Hernandez left Barcelona in 2015 after lifting a glorious treble, but his hopes of a second triumphant farewell as coach have been whittled away.

The former midfield great's last real chance of silverware this season is in the Champions League, with the Catalans visiting Napoli in a last 16 first leg clash Wednesday.

After his team were thrashed by Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final and knocked out of the Copa del Rey, Xavi said he would leave his job at the end of the season.

Eight points off leaders Madrid in La Liga, it seems like only a European run can bring Xavi and his beleaguered Spanish champions some respite.

However the club's travails on the continent in recent years do not bode well, with humiliating defeats -- to Roma, Liverpool, Bayern Munich -- still vivid memories.

In the past two seasons Barcelona had failed to make it out of their group.

The last time the Catalans managed to get their hands on the Champions League, back in 2015, it was Xavi lifting the trophy.

Then 35, Xavi tearfully departed after 17 seasons at the top level with Barcelona, expecting that a team powered by Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez could o on to dominate European football for years to come.

Instead, the project crumbled under the weight of mismanagement and heaving salaries and Barcelona have been sinking ever since, with Xavi called in to rescue the team as coach in November 2021.

Although he led Barcelona to La Liga last season, the football did not convince and this term the team have stalled, leading Xavi to announce his second exit.

Since his announcement, Barcelona have won three league games and drawn one, although their performances have not been impressive.

"After the decision it's been 10 points from 12, I think it's worked out well," said Xavi.

- 'Pumped up' -

Barcelona players are also conscious the Champions League offers them a chance to snatch at rapidly fading chances of glory.

"When the music rings out ... that energy, that desire, we have to go out there pumped up," defender Ronald Araujo said on YouTube this week.

"I know the importance of it, and what the Champions League represents for a player and for the club, we have responsibilities."

Striker Robert Lewandowski has found form at a crucial moment of the season, with four goals in his last three games.

"We've been working very hard this week, I think we can do better in the Champions League," said the Polish star.

"In Napoli we have to play for 90 minutes well in defence and attack."

Napoli forwards Victor Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia will relish facing a Barcelona defence which has caved in badly in this campaign, but the Italian champions are in turmoil as they too struggle badly in the league.

The Catalans may have Joao Felix available again after injury as he trained with his team-mates on Monday.

The Portuguese forward has failed to convince consistently but has shown flashes of outrageous talent which could be enough to propel Barcelona through.

"They've shown me stats ... we would be leaders based on chances created," said Xavi on Saturday, bemoaning his team's lack of finishing quality this season in La Liga.

If his team can improve their finishing, the visit to Napoli is the potential start of Barca's road towards, if not redemption, then at least some restored pride.

Xavi was also instrumental in achieving Barça’s “triplet” (which won the League, the Copa Del Rey and the Champions League in 2009) and the Spanish team’s triumph at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. That Spain was proclaimed for the first time world champion.

His father, who was a player of Sabadell, instilled his passion for football. The scouts of the Fútbol Club Barcelona followed him in several children’s parties of the city egarense at the request of the father.

Finally, at eleven years, he made a test and in July of 1991 he entered the Masia, the residence of the future stars of Barça who do not come from the City of Barcelona. Xavi immediately noticed his teacher Josep Guardiola, his current coach and key figure of the Dream Teammate the time.

Looking at himself in that mirror, his progression was so meteoric that Guardiola himself, one day watching him from the band in a youth game, predicted his teammates: “This one is going to retire us all.” More or less that way.

Xavi became the natural successor of Guardiola; despite the fact that other excellent organizers were forced to leave the ranks of the club, such as Cesc Fabregas or Vlikel Arteta, who play in the English and Scottish Premier League, respectively.

His predisposition to learn things, the maturity that radiated at such a young age and his quality of football led to the 1997-1998 season from youth to Barca B, where he immediately became the “brain” of the team.

A team in which Xavi not only commanded and organized, but scored easily thanks to his unexpected arrivals to the area and his mastery in the launching of fouls with a barrier.

Already then, despite his short stature (1.70 m) and his small build (weighs 63 kilos when he is in top form), he would be a teacher in the conduct of the ball and in the protection of it.

In the following season he alternated his performances with B and the first team, with which he debuted on August 18, 1998 with Dutch coach Louis Van Gaal in a Supercup match of Spain against Real Mallorca.

He started and scored a goal. Van Gaal made him debut in the league on October 3 of that same year at the Mestalla against Valencia, who fell defeated by 1-3. His intermittent performances with the first team gave wings to a bogus Barça that occupied the tenth position of the table.

Xavi scored a decisive goal that gave the victory to his team in the field of Valladolid, and from that victory, counting more assiduously with its presence, the azulgranas traced of so spectacular form that they would gain Liga 1998-1999. It was his second professional title.

In the season 1999-2000, due to an injury of Guardiola, Xavi consolidated in the first equipment. Convinced of his possibilities, his game matured exponentially. Meanwhile, his stellar performance in Nigeria meant that on November 15, 2000 he made his debut against the Netherlands.

A few years later he would be regularly summoned to defend the colors of Spain. From the 2000-2001 seasons, with Guardiola’s departure to Italian Calcio, Xavi became the undisputed starter with both Van Gaal and subsequent coaches: Carles Reixach, Radomir Antic and Frank Rijkaard. In the Barca, however, he would not reach his third title, the League, until May 14, 2005, after a painful march of the team and the club through a desert of nonsense.

In summer of the same year he was proclaimed champion of the Supercopa of Spain, title that would renew the following year, in which in the return match marked a decisive goal before Real Club Spanish, to which the azulgranas surpassed by 3-0.

Usually the injuries respected him, reason why always he was in form when his participation was required. It is only worth mentioning a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of the right knee during a training session at the Camp Nou in December 2005.

That mishap had a negative effect on his projection by forcing him to be absent for five months until the end of April 2006, when reappeared before the Cadiz CF That year the azulgranas got again the title of Liga and the Supercopa of Spain.

But the greatest moment of glory of that year 2006 for a team that worked like a machine (thanks to the work of Xavi and Andrés Iniesta in the core and the geniuses of Ronaldinho and Eto’oin the lead) came with the victory in the Champions League, the unfinished business of Barça, which only had in their cases the Dream Team achieved in 1992. Xavi, however, could not participate in the final against Arsenal FC due to his low form by the injury.

In 2007, in the Champions League match against Olympique Lyon, played on September 19, Xavi equaled Migueli as FC Barcelona player who played most matches in European competitions (85).

And overcame the mythical central Ceutí on October 2 of that same year in a game against VfB Stuttgart. The difference, of course, would continue to rise.

As for his matches with Barça, on 24 November 2007 and before the Spanish club de Recreativo Huelva equaled the figure of 400 official matches that Guardiola had.

But without the title of European Champion of Nations of 2008, in which Xavi exploited to the maximum qualities that did not prodigaba (pass in depth to the striker with greater advantage and kicks from outside the area), would not have occupied the first pages of the press.

In that Eurocopa, disputed in Austria and Switzerland, the azulgrana midfielder, indoctrinated by Luis Aragones, advanced its position with resounding success. He scored his first goal on June 26 against Russia.

And in the final against Germany, Xavi gave the goal pass to Fernando Torres, who scored the only goal of the match. His performance in the Eurocopa won him the prize for Best Player of the competition, a mention that usually falls on a striker.

The media, however, agreed that it was a wise choice. In addition to this greater distinction, Xavi had been awarded the best soccer player of the seasons 1998-1999 and 2004-2005 by the sports magazine Don Pelota, and already in 1999 had received the prize El País like revelation soccer player.

If with the Spanish team he had one of the best moments to win the European Championship, the 2008-2009 season still reserved a higher destination: to be an essential part, together with Iniesta, of the organization of the game of FC Barcelona in which he was without doubt the best season in the history of the club.

Barça, in fact, achieved something as unusual in world football as the “triplet”, the victory in the three tournaments in which it participated: the Spanish League, the Copa Del Rey and the Champions League.

The game exhibited by the team amazed everyone, of course it was the new coach, his admired Josep Guardiola, the main architect of that revolution, but such successes are not conceivable without organizers such as Iniesta and Xavi himself.

The 2009-2010 seasons added its fifth league title to its record, after a very intense competition in which Fútbol Club Barcelona and Real Madrid reached vertiginous records in both goals and points, winning 31 of the 38 matches played.

Barça, who also scored the Spanish Super Cup, could not however revalidate their victory in the Champions League after falling into the semi-finals.

After the season, the 2010 World Cup in South Africa would give Xavi the last title left to win. Despite the disappointing defeat against Switzerland, the Spanish team trained by Vicente Del Bosque remained faithful to his style and Xavi and his other midfielder brains (Iniesta, Xabi Alonso, and Cesc Fabregas) chained a victory behind another to defeat Germany in the semifinals and Holland in the final. For the first time, after decades “without passing quarters”, Spain was proclaimed world champion.

Rather cold player on the field, his teammates praise his integrity and his ability to trace a game that seems lost. It is not a media star, although any elite team would be delighted to have your services.

But he feels so identified with his lifelong club and his hobby that he has not heard the siren songs of other leagues and other clubs; plans to retire at Barcelona, whose coach pampers him and doses for fear of injury, lining up in key matches.

From the 2010-2011 seasons will undoubtedly remember the extraordinary goal with which Xavi opened the scoring against Mourinho’s Madrid.

The son of a former professional soccer player, Xavi demonstrated impressive athletic abilities at an early age and joined La Masia, the training academy of FC Barcelona, at age 11. A rapid rise through the academy’s ranks earned the midfielder a spot on the 1997-98 reserve team, which won its division to earn a promotion.

Since July 2013, Xavi has been married to Nuria Cunillera. Their daughter, Asia, was born on 3 January 2016.

Playing Career

At age 11 Xavi joined the youth squad of FC Barcelona, a first-division football club near his hometown. He advanced through the club’s various junior ranks before making his first-team debut in 1998. In his first season with the team, Barcelona won the 1998–99 La Liga—Spain’s top football league—championship.

He was also a member of the FIFA World Youth Championship–winning team in 1999, and earned a silver medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics.

Xavi was named the vice-captain in the 2004–05 season, in which he helped Barcelona win La Liga and the Spanish Supercup. He was named La Liga Spanish Player of the Year in 2005.

Torn knee ligaments forced Xavi to miss most of Barcelona’s La Liga–winning season and Champions League victory in 2006, though he helped the club win another Super Cup that August.

He was a main part of Barcelona’s treble and scored the fourth goal in the 4–1 win in the 2009 Copa del Rey Final against Athletic Bilbao, with a free kick. In La Liga, among many games, one of the most significant is the 6–2 El Clásico victory vs Real Madrid on 2 May.

Xavi was voted “UEFA Champions League best midfielder” for his contribution during Barcelona’s victorious 2008–09 UEFA Champions League campaign. Xavi was La Liga’s highest assisting player with 20 assists. He was also the highest assisting player in the Champions League with 7 assists. Xavi earned 29 assists overall that season.

Xavi was under contract to Barça until 2014 after extending his contract during the 2008–09 season. The new contract made him one of the club’s biggest earners, with a salary of €7.5 million a year.

On 9 June 2010, Xavi signed a new 4-year contract with the club, which may be automatically renewed up to 30 June 2016 based on number of games played.

He was one of the three finalists for the 2010 FIFA Ballon d’Or, alongside Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi and Andrés Iniesta. He finished third on the vote behind Messi and Iniesta. He narrowly defeated Messi to win Player of the Year designation from World Soccer Magazine.

On 18 December, in the 2011 FIFA Club World Cup Final in Yokohama, Japan, Barcelona won 4-0 against Santos as Xavi scored a goal and made an assist to Lionel Messi.

In June 2014, it was announced that Xavi would be leaving the club.

On 21 May 2015, Xavi announced that he would join Qatari club Al Sadd at the end of the season, on a three-year contract. In the 2016 Qatar Cup Al Sadd were knocked out by El Jaish SC in the semi final.

Xavi’s profile received a boost with his performance at the 2008 European Championship, when he scored in a semifinal victory over Russia and assisted on the lone goal in the final vs. Germany to earn Player of the Tournament honors. It was the start of an amazing stretch for the outstanding midfielder and his Barcelona teammates, who went on to win a staggering six titles in 2009. Afterward, Xavi finished third in voting for the Ballon d’Or award for the first of three consecutive years.

Spain claimed its first FIFA World Cup championship in 2010, with Xavi earning a well-deserved spot on the tournament All-Star team. Two years later, he again earned all-tournament honours at the European Championship as Spain became the first country to win three successive major international events.

With so much success under his belt, it was only a matter of time before the playmaker secured the top spot in the record books of his club and his country. In January 2011, he set a record with his 550th career appearance for Barcelona. A victory in the 2013 Super Cup gave Xavi 25 career titles, tops among Spanish players, though he undoubtedly hopes to add to that number before his superb career is finished.

On 5 August 2014, following the 2014 FIFA World Cup where Spain were eliminated at the group stage, Xavi announced his retirement from international football having made 133 appearances for the national side in a 14-year period.

The claim that Xavi is one of the best central midfielders of all-time relies largely on his ability to find and exploit space as a playmaker.

Xavi’s vision, pinpoint accurate passing and world class ball control allowed him to dictate the flow of play while rarely relinquishing possession, most notably displayed during Spain’s 2010 World Cup victory where he had a 91% passing success rate for the tournament. His ability to control some matches has earned him the sobriquet, “The Puppet Master”.

Early Life and Childhood: Xavier “Xavi” Hernandez Creus was born on January 25, 1980, in Terrassa, Barcelona, Spain. Raised in a football-loving family, Xavi developed a passion for the sport from an early age. His father, Joaquim Hernandez, was a former professional footballer, and Xavi’s football journey began in the youth ranks of local club FC Barcelona.

FC Barcelona Youth Academy – La Masia: Xavi joined the prestigious La Masia youth academy at FC Barcelona, the same renowned institution that produced many legendary players. Under the guidance of coaches at La Masia, including Johan Cruyff, Xavi honed his skills as a midfielder known for his precise passing, vision, and understanding of the game.

FC Barcelona Debut: Xavi made his first-team debut for FC Barcelona in 1998 under manager Louis van Gaal. However, it was under the subsequent management of Frank Rijkaard and, later, Pep Guardiola that Xavi truly flourished. His partnership with Andrés Iniesta in the midfield became the heartbeat of Barcelona’s success.

Guardiola Era – Tiki-Taka and Domination: Under Pep Guardiola’s management, FC Barcelona implemented the famous “Tiki-Taka” style of play, characterized by quick, short passes and maintaining possession. Xavi’s ability to dictate the rhythm of the game and control the midfield played a pivotal role in Barcelona’s unprecedented success during this era. The team won multiple La Liga titles, UEFA Champions League trophies, and FIFA Club World Cups.

Spain National Team – Euro 2008, 2010 World Cup, and Euro 2012: Xavi was a key figure in the Spanish national team during a period of historic success. He played an instrumental role in Spain winning their first major international trophy at UEFA Euro 2008. The success continued with the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, where Xavi’s midfield mastery guided Spain to their first-ever World Cup title. Xavi’s influence extended to Euro 2012, where Spain secured another European Championship.

Individual Awards and Continued Success: Xavi’s exceptional performances earned him individual accolades, including multiple nominations for the FIFA Ballon d’Or. His consistency as a world-class midfielder was evident throughout his career at Barcelona.

Later Career – Al-Sadd and Qatar: In 2015, after a distinguished career at Barcelona, Xavi moved to Qatari club Al-Sadd. Despite being in the latter stages of his career, he continued to showcase his football intelligence and leadership on the field. Xavi also ventured into coaching during his time in Qatar.

Return to FC Barcelona – Coaching Role: In January 2020, Xavi returned to FC Barcelona, not as a player but in a coaching role. However, due to various reasons, including the COVID-19 pandemic, he did not take up the managerial position.

Off the Pitch and Personal Life: Off the pitch, Xavi is known for his humility, professionalism, and dedication to the sport. He has been involved in philanthropy and charity work, including initiatives related to education.

In terms of personal life, Xavi is married to Nuria Cunillera, and they have two children together.

Legacy: Xavi Hernandez’s legacy is that of a midfield maestro and one of the greatest playmakers in football history. His vision, passing accuracy, and ability to control the tempo of the game set him apart. Xavi’s impact on FC Barcelona’s golden era and Spain’s international triumphs make him an icon of the beautiful game. His influence extends beyond his playing days, as he continues to contribute to the sport in a coaching capacity, further solidifying his place in football history.

Barca boss Xavi wary of Napoli under new coach

B arcelona coach Xavi Hernandez says preparing for Wednesday's Champions League last 16 tie against Napoli has proved tricky with the Italians now under new management.

Struggling Napoli sacked Walter Mazzarri and brought in Slovakia coach Francesco Calzona on Monday, 48 hours before they host Barcelona.

"Napoli changed their coach in a surprising way, they have their reasons, but it's not an easy match to prepare for, as we don't know what to expect," Xavi told the eve-of-match press conference on Tuesday.

He added: "The new manager knows the team well. I have no idea what tactical system he's going to use.

"What's important is to focus on our style of play and what we want to do, on our ambitions which are to reach the quarter-finals.

"What is certain is that we will have to defend well up against their very strong attacking trio.

"(Victor) Osimhen, (Khvicha) Kvaratskhelia and (Matteo) Politano can turn a game."

Napoli, last season's Serie A champions under Luciano Spalletti who is now with the Italian national team, are once again trying to start afresh after sacking their second manager of a disastrous season - Spalletti's replacement Rudi Garcia was axed in November.

Despite the state of flux at Napoli, Xavi denied his side were favourites going into the tie.

"It's 50-50, we'll see tomorrow who is favourite at the end of the game," added Xavi who has announced he is stepping down as Barca boss at the end of the season.

"It doesn't change anything for me nor for my team. I'm motivated, and want to pass that motivation onto the team.

"When you are a player or manager at Barcelona the pressure is always the same and it's very strong."

Barcelona, five time title-holders, failed to make it out of the group stage of the Champions League in the past two seasons, and were knocked out by Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16 in 2021.
