Does The Longmire Series Follow The Books?

From the A&E network to Netflix, Longmire book series fans have had the pleasure of watching the live version of Sheriff Walt Longmire on the TV series, Longmire, which premiered on June 3, 2012. The TV series is based on the books by Craig Johnson with Robert Taylor depicting the lead role of Sheriff Walter Longmire. The Wyoming-native is supported by other characters portrayed by the likes of Katee Sackhoff, Lou Diamond Phillips, Bailey Chase, Adam Bartley, A Martinez, Zahn McClarnon, and John Bishop.

Filmed in Mexico, the TV show was first aired by A&E as the network’s number-one original series with an impressive viewership of 4.1 million. Following the cancelation of the show by A&E, Netflix picked it up from season four with the sixth season, which is the last, released in 2017. All episodes of the Longmire mystery series are available on Netflix . The shows span from June 3, 2012, to November 17, 2017.

Meanwhile, some discrepancies exist between the book and the televised version of the Longmire series. One of such anomalies is where the late wife of the sheriff was said to have died of cancer in the book while the TV series suggests she was murdered while suffering from the deadly disease.

Is Craig Johnson Still Writing Longmire Books?

Going by the list above, Johnson’s novel, Next To Last Stand , which was released on September 22, 2020, will be succeeded by Daugther Of The Morning Star which is expected to hit the book stand on September 21, 2021, exactly one year after the last one. For now, Johnson doesn’t look like he is ready to drop the pen and he has not announced his retirement yet. So, until he makes it official that he’s retiring, we can only expect more books in the Longmire book series.

Craig Johnson Books In Order

Publication order of walt longmire books, publication order of walt longmire short stories/novellas, publication order of walt longmire collections, publication order of anthologies.

His novels are western style mysteries and have garnered him much critical acclaim and some awards as well. He continues to write Longmire mysteries, usually set in with the beautiful Wyoming nature as a backdrop.

Longmire, Path to Success

Walt Longmire is a sheriff in Wyoming’s Absaroka county. A sparsely populated area in Wyoming, where everybody knows everybody else. The Sheriff has been widowed for a few years and lives in neglected squalor, alone. He is a fair, if flawed character who has the backing of the entire county. People here like Walt and he wants to protect them to the best of his ability.

Craig Johnson has created a believable character who comes off the pages as being a person that you would like to get to know yourself and who you could trust. This makes the novels all the more true as you can easily see yourself accepting and supporting Longmire as the law in your town.

Auspicious Beginnings

The Longmire adventures began in 2005 with the release of The Cold Dish. The novel was received with great critical praise and it became apparent to any reader that Craig Johnson had a definite talent for the written word. He has a way of making the reader jump right into the story and quickly become immersed in Longmire’s world and hope to solve the mystery along side the Sheriff. In the first story we meet Walt Longmire who is faced with the toughest case of his career.

Not particularly pleasant for a man who is waiting to finish off his tenure in peace. The plot of the story revolves around the seeming murder of a young man named Cody. The murder weapon was a rare Sharps riffle and the only possible motive is that the boy was involved in the rape of a Cheyenne girl named Melissa Real Bird who suffered from Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

This is not what Longmire was hoping to find when called to the scene. The plot line is interesting enough, but the cast of characters that are woven into the story are both memorable and real. Longmire’s life long friend Henry Standing Bear and the Deputy Victoria Moretti a tough ex-philadelphia cop whose mouth is as foul as any street thug, add to the texture of the novel.

The plot thickens as two of the other boys involved in the rape are found dead. This is definitely not the relaxing quiet end to a career that Longmire had wanted. The mystery deepens as it is discovered that several of the townspeople, with more than adequate motive, own Sharps riffles.

It takes cunning and tried and true police work to get to the bottom of the mystery, which Longmire has in spades. Craig Johnson won the 2006 Dilys award for the novel. Not only was the story great but the fact that Johnson was a patrolman himself brings a great dose of realism to the novel.

Death Without Company (2006)

The second installment in the Walt Longmire series takes a different path. This piece deals much more with character interaction. The Basics of the story is that Mari Baroja, a basque women is found dead at the Durant Home for Assisted Living. Everyone assumes that she had died of natural causes, after all this is a home for the elderly.

Lucian Connally, however sees thing differently, Longmire puts stock into that which Connally says as he was the Sheriff who hired Longmire in the first place. Connally surprises Longmire by admitting that he had actually been married to Mari from a few hours many years before. The marriage ended when Mari’s uncles and father hunted them down and gave Lucian a beating.

The autopsy reveals that she has indeed been poisoned, moreover a rash of crimes that would rival any major city center begins to plague the small Wyoming area. Craig Johnson has created a completely different type of story with this second installment, yet it remains as poignant and entertaining as the first.

Longmire on A&E

On June 3rd 2012, the Longmire television show premiered on A&E. The series received both critical and popular praise. In fact it was the all time top rated original series for a A&E. The television series is filmed in New Mexico rather than Wyoming,

There are other differences between the books and the television series, most specifically the lack of a Philadelphia connection in the television series. In the novels, Walt’s daughter, Cady, lives in Philly which is also where Vic Moretti comes from. This has allowed for a few stories to be moved to Philadelphia and add a different layer to the novels.

Craig Johnson also adds an element of the spiritual in his novels, often helping Longmire advance in his cases.. This element is all but absent in the television series. Nonetheless the series is very popular and has been renewed for another year. The series has also been exported and is now available in both the U.K. and in Australia. Craig Allen Johnson has created a wonderful set of characters set against a surreal natural backdrop.

Even though it would seem rather impossible for all of these mysterious crimes to occur in such a remote and sparsely populated area, the stories are too wonderful to ignore. This is actually the only part of the stories that demands a suspension of belief. Everything is so real, the characters jump off the page and you would swear you know someone exactly like that person in your everyday life.

With the advent of a television show and the popularity of the novels on the rise with the new fans brought in via this medium, we will be allowed to continue visiting Absaroka county for a long time. Craig Johnson is a master of his craft and must be read to truly appreciate the richness of his characters, the realism with which they are portrayed and the depth of his stories. Westerns may not be your style but these are more than worth the read.

I really like the books by Craig Johnson and the main characters are very likable. The stories are interesting and good reading. However the tv series is very disappointing because the personalities of the main character are very different from those in the books. They aren’t very likeable or attractive. It’s so disappointing that I’ve quit watching; I really enjoy the books and continue to read them.

I still miss Walt Longmire! Will we ever get another book?

We don’t have cable so i just discovered the Longmire tv series on an “air tv” channel a couple of weeks ago and was hooked. However ran across the audio book on my Libby app and am enjoying it a whole lot more. They replotted the TV series and to the detriment of the book series, IMHO. While listening to Craig Johnson’s first book in the series I was able to follow each character as clearly as I was watching them, also I caught myself laughing out loud throughout each chapter. Keep up the great writing, I’ve already ordered the book in the series, can hardly wait until it arrives.

As a Canadian knowing about how Natives have been treated in Canada and the U.S. it is wonderful that Walt seems to show an understanding and sympathy for most natives.

My husband lost his sight 2 years ago. He is able to listen to your books through v the Library for the Blind. It has bee a great thing for him. He loves your books.

I was introduced to you books at a lecture you gave in Spokane, WA. Very interesting. I LOVE Walt Longmire. I have listened to some of the books 3 times and have watched the series on Netflix twice. I’m a fan. Hope you come back again soon.

REALLY Happy to find.. BookSeriesInOrder.com

Wow, I just finished audio of, “Next to last Stand”. Things set up for many changes to come. Love Vic and crew.

They don’t have Dog in the tv series – too bad, I like him.

The character in The Cold Dish is Melissa Little Bird.

All 20+ Walt Longmire Books in Order by Craig Johnson | Ultimate Guide

The Walt Longmire books are mystery crime thrillers that take place in the fictional Absaroka County in Wyoming. Whether you’ve been a fan since the first book or are eager to start reading the series that inspired the hit show Longmire, this article will be your ultimate guide on how to read the Walt Longmire books in order.

The series follows the titular character, Sheriff Walt Longmire, as he solves crimes within his jurisdiction and beyond.

Walt Longmire Books in Order

Who is Craig Johnson?

The author of this popular mystery series is Craig Johnson. While he grew up in a family of storytellers, Johnson held many different jobs before he became an author, including police officer, cowboy, educator, and longshoreman. Johnson and his wife currently live in Ucross, Wyoming, which has a population of 25.

The New York Times bestselling author says that he is the worst storyteller in his family, and he often admired his mother’s ability with the craft. He decided that if he couldn’t tell stories, maybe he could write them down. Once he purchased his piece of land in Ucross and built the first part of his ranch, he sat down to get writing.

Thus began his Walt Longmire series. It’s safe to say it’s worked out pretty well for him. Since the publication of the first novel in 2004, Johnson has published short stories, novellas, and 17 full-length novels with another scheduled for publication in the fall of 2022.

The popular book series is also the inspiration for a TV show adaptation, which had more than four million viewers for its first season in 2012. The Longmire books and show have also inspired a multi-day festival in Buffalo, Wyoming. Longmire Days features appearances by Johnson himself and cast members from the show.

As a child Johnson was influenced by the writing of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Alexandre Dumas, Robert Louis Stevenson, Mark Twain, Louis L’Amour, Jack London, and Rudyard Kipling. He also credits his father as an inspirational influence.

Johnson has since won multiple awards for his writing, including the Western Writers of America Spur Award for fiction, the Mountains and Plains Booksellers Award for fiction, the Nouvel Observateur Prix du Roman Noir, and the Prix SNCF du Polar.

Walt Longmire Books in Order

But now let’s dive into the books. Reading the Walt Longmire books in order is pretty straightforward. This is because the publication order of the books is the recommended reading order.

Johnson writes his books with the seasons in mind, citing that January in Wyoming is much different from July in Wyoming; therefore, each full-length novel takes place in the next season, meaning four Longmire books roughly make up one calendar year.

Like with most mystery novels, there is a crime that is resolved by the conclusion of each book. This means that you could read these books in whichever order you choose. However, by reading the books in publication order you will better understand the nuance of Sheriff Walt Longmire, his connections to his community, and his relationships.

Reading the books in the order of publication is how the author intended to tell the story, so it is the recommended way to read the books. Furthermore, there are recurring themes and characters throughout the series that will make the most sense when read in publication order.

Walt Longmire TV Show Adaptation

As previously mentioned, the Walt Longmire books also are the basis for the TV show adaptation: Longmire.

The crime drama first aired in 2012 on A&E as the network’s highest-rated original drama . Unfortunately, it was then cancelled after three seasons. However, it was picked up by Netflix for an additional three seasons before its sixth and final season aired in 2017.

The show stars Robert Taylor as Walt Longmire, Lou Diamond Phillips as his good friend Henry Standing Bear, and Katee Sackhoff as Deputy Sheriff Victoria Moretti.

Fans say the show is more similar to the books in the earlier seasons, but as with any adaptation changes were made to best fit the story to the screen. One of the biggest differences between the TV show and the books is the amount of murder that takes place in Absaroka County. While in the books the county only had five murders in 24 years, the TV series more than doubled that in the first season alone.

Although the TV show has now ended, Robert Taylor has expressed interest in returning to the screen to tell more of Longmire’s story, potentially in a movie, if the opportunity presents itself.

Summary of the Walt Longmire Books in Order

Now that we’ve listed out the Walt Longmire books in order, let’s take a closer look at the books in the series.

We’ve included summaries for the first ten titles published by Craig Johnson, which does include a short story and a short story collection. If you’ve never read this series before, proceed with caution as some of the below summaries will contain spoilers for events that take place earlier within the series.

The Cold Dish Walt Longmire Books in Order

1. The Cold Dish

The body of a young man turns up in Absaroka County, Wyoming. It’s possible that Cody Pritchard is the victim of a hunting accident, but is he? After all, he was one of the four boys who lured Melissa Real Bird, a Cheyenne girl with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, into a basement and raped her.

Cody and his friends received what amounted to suspended sentences. So is someone now seeking revenge? Will the specter of race relations and lingering retribution claim more lives? Or will the only thing that stands between them and a Sharps .45-70 buffalo rifle be Sheriff Walt Longmire?

Absaroka County is located at the base of the Big Horn Mountains and next to the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. On the autumnal side of 24 years as its sheriff, Walt is looking for a quiet period to finish out his tenure. But instead he finds himself embroiled in the most volatile and challenging case of his career.

By his side is his life-long friend Henry Standing Bear and his Deputy Victoria Morretti. Together they will attempt to ensure that revenge, a dish best served cold, is never served at all.

Death Without Company Craig Johnson

2. Death Without Company

Mari Baroja is found poisoned at the Durant Home for Assisted Living. This draws Sheriff Walt Longmire into an investigation of her death that proves to be as dramatic as her life.

Baroja has connections to the Basque community, the lucrative coal-bed methane industry, as well as the personal life of the previous sheriff, Lucian Connally. All lead to a complex web of half truths and assumed allegiances.

As the specter of Mari’s abusive husband arises, Sheriff Longmire must connect the past to the present to find the killer among them. By his side is his friend Henry Standing Bear, Deputy Victoria Moretti, and newcomer Santiago Saizarbitoria.

Kindness Goes Unpunished Walt Longmire

3. Kindness Goes Unpunished

Walt Longmire has been sheriff of Wyoming’s Absaroka County for almost a quarter of a century. He metes out justice with charm and a high-powered sense of humor. But when Walt tags along with good friend Henry Standing Bear on a trip to Philadelphia, he’s in for a shock.

A vicious attack on his daughter Cady leaves her near death. Then Walt discovers that she has unwittingly become embroiled in a deadly political cover-up.

With Henry, Deputy Victoria Moretti, the entire Moretti clan of Philadelphia police officers, and Dog as backup, Sheriff Longmire intends to introduce a little western justice from his saddlebag of tricks to the City of Brotherly Love, where no act of kindness goes unpunished.

Another Man’s Moccasins Craig Johnson Books in Order

4. Another Man’s Moccasins

The body of a young Vietnamese woman is found alongside the interstate in Absaroka County. With its discovery Sheriff Walt Longmire is determined to find out the identity of the victim. But he must also confront the horrible similarities of this murder to that of his first homicide case as a Marine investigator in Vietnam.

To complicate matters they find Virgil White Buffalo, a Crow Indian, living in a nearby culvert. In his possession is the young woman’s purse.

There are only two problems with what appears to be an open-and-shut case. Firstly, the sheriff doesn’t think Virgil White Buffalo — a Vietnam vet with a troubling past — is a murderer. And secondly, the photo in the woman’s purse looks hauntingly familiar to Walt.

The Dark Horse Walt Longmire Books in Order

5. The Dark Horse

Wade Barsad is a man with a dubious past. Apparently he locked his wife Mary’s horses in their barn and then burned it down. In return she shot him in the head six times — or so the story goes.

Sheriff Walt Longmire doesn’t believe that Mary’s confession is the truth, and he’s determined to dig deeper. Posing as an insurance claims investigator, Walt goes undercover.

He soon discovers that the population of an entire town might have wanted Wade dead. Including a beautiful Guatemalan bartender and a rancher with a taste for liquor, but not so much for honesty.

It’s an unfriendly place — something that’s fine with Longmire, who is looking for the truth, not friends.

Junkyard Dog Craig Johnson

6. Junkyard Dog

Wyoming Sheriff Walt Longmire finds himself in the throes of a modern day range war. Unfortunately, missing body parts and dead developers are only the beginning.

It’s a volatile new economy in Durant when the owners of a multi-million dollar development of ranchettes want to get rid of the adjacent Stewart junkyard. The notorious Stewart clan is an adventure unto itself. When conflicts erupt, Walt, Dog, life-long friend Henry Standing Bear, and deputies Santiago Saizarbitoria and Victoria Moretti find themselves in a small town that feels more and more like a high plains pressure cooker.

To complicate matters is an unlikely romance between junkyard patriarch Geo Stewart and a woman with a socially elite background. As well, the outlaw behavior of Geo’s grandson Duane and young wife Gina makes for one of the more hilarious entries in the Absaroka County saga.

Hell Is Empty Walt Longmire

7. Hell Is Empty

Well-read and world-weary, Sheriff Walt Longmire has been maintaining order in Wyoming’s Absaroka County for more than thirty years. But now he is pushed to his limits.

Raynaud Shade is an adopted Crow Indian. He has also just confessed to murdering a boy twenty years ago and burying him deep within the Bighorn Mountains.

Walt transports Shade and a group of other convicted murderers through a snowstorm. Then the FBI tells him that the dead body is in his jurisdiction. And the victim’s name is White Buffalo.

Guided only by Indian mysticism and a battered paperback of Dante’s Inferno, Walt pursues Shade and his fellow escapees into the icy hell of the Cloud Peak Wilderness Area. He cheats death to ensure that justice — both civil and spiritual — is served.

As the Crow Flies Craig Johnson

8. As the Crow Flies

In this installment, Wyoming Sheriff Walt Longmire has a more important matter on his mind than cowboys and criminals. Namely that his daughter, Cady, is getting married to the brother of his undersheriff, Victoria Moretti.

Walt and old friend Henry Standing Bear are the de facto wedding planners. Both fear Cady’s wrath when the wedding locale arrangements go up in smoke only two weeks before the big event.

The pair set out to find a new site for the nuptials on the Cheyenne Reservation. But their scouting expedition ends in horror as they witness a young Crow woman plummeting from Painted Warrior’s majestic cliffs.

It’s not Walt’s turf, but the newly appointed tribal police chief and Iraqi war veteran, the beautiful Lolo Long, tricks him into helping with the investigation. Walt is stretched thin as he mentors Lolo, attempts to catch the bad guys, and performs his role as father of the bride.

A Serpent's Tooth Walt Longmire Books in Order

9. A Serpent’s Tooth

It’s homecoming for the Durant Dogies when Cord Lynear, a Mormon “lost boy” forced off his compound for rebellious behavior, shows up in Absaroka County.

Without much guidance, divine or otherwise, Sheriff Walt Longmire, Victoria Moretti, and Henry Standing Bear search for the boy’s mother and find themselves on a high-plains scavenger hunt that ends at the barbed-wire doorstep of an interstate polygamy group.

Run by four-hundred-pound Roy Lynear, Cord’s father, the group is frighteningly well armed and very good at keeping secrets.

Walt’s got Cord locked up for his own good, but the Absaroka County jailhouse is getting crowded since the arrival of the boy’s self-appointed bodyguard, a dangerously spry old man who claims to be blessed by Joseph Smith himself.

As Walt, Vic, and Henry butt heads with the Lynears, they hear whispers of Big Oil and the CIA and fear they might be dealing with a lot more than they bargained for.

Any Other Name Craig Johnson

10. Any Other Name

Walt is sinking into high-plains winter discontent when his former boss, Lucian Conally, asks him to take on a mercy case in an adjacent county. Detective Gerald Holman is dead and Lucian wants to know what drove his old friend to take his own life.

With the clock ticking on the birth of his first grandchild, Walt learns that the by-the-book detective might have suppressed evidence concerning three missing women.

Digging deeper, Walt uncovers an incriminating secret so dark that it threatens to claim other lives even before the sheriff can serve justice—Wyoming style.

I just finished reading “Steamboat”, one of the most exciting and moving stories I have ever read, along with “Daughter of the morning star”. I have enjoyed all of your books, Craig. You are truly an outstanding writer!

I think I watched the series on TV first and have tried to keep up with the books. I grew up in Idaho and love the western life and to me there is just enough western vibes for me to get by if I also read C.J. Box! It is so fun to identify with the characters and I love how your mind works, Mr. Johnson. Thank you for your contribution to our nation’s literary world.

I love the narrations. George Guidell is fabulous! However, I cannot find the mp3 version of Divorce Horse. Even my library can’t find it. Any clues, anyone?

Love this series! I’ve read the first 14 books and stories in chronological order. My favorite so far is Spirit of Steamboat. Fabulous! Thanks you Craig.

I love these characters-Walt, Henry, Vic, Lucian and of course, Dog.

I didn’t read this author for a really long time because I thought it would be too western. Happy to say, it is more about personal relationships and mystery.

Craig was 3/4 of the way through his newest Longmire novel back in May. Can’t wait for what comes after DRY BONES. Also can’t wait to see if Walt will ever “grow a pair” and get serious about Vic Moretti.

Love these books.

Wyoming Author Craig Johnson To Release New Longmire Book On September 6

Wyoming Author Craig Johnson will be releasing his 18th book featuring Absaroka County Sheriff Walt Longmire on September 6.

August 31, 2022 6 min read

Collage Maker 31 Aug 2022 02 26 PM

Fans of Craig Johnson’s popular book series set in northeast Wyoming have seen the title character, Walt Longmire, travel the world. From Vietnam (in “Another Man’s Moccasins”) to Mexico (in “Depth of Winter”), Johnson has sent his popular Wyoming sheriff on adventures far from his home in “Durant.”

But in his 18th novel, which will be released on September 6, Johnson sends Walt even further from home – to “Hell and Back.”

The author told Cowboy State Daily that ghosts and spirits don’t seem to faze his title character.

“Walt’s kind of famous for jumping in where angels fear to tread,” Johnson said.

Tough Topics

The book picks up where the previous novel, “Daughter Of the Morning Star,” left off, with Longmire trying to solve the mystery of a woman who disappeared off the Crow Reservation, vanishing, seemingly, without a trace.

Johnson said that the inspiration for that book, which was released in 2021, came from a tattered flyer in the entryway of a library in Hardin, Montana.

“The sun had come across that bulletin board, and the sun had faded away half that young woman’s face,” he said. “And it was just gut wrenching. And I thought, wouldn’t it be one of the worst things that could ever possibly have happened to you, that somebody you cared about, someone that you loved, just disappeared?”

Johnson said the subject of murdered and missing Indigenous women had captured his attention before it became a mainstream topic – as did the related issue of American Indian residential schools, where it has recently been revealed that thousands of Native children perished while under the care of government school administrators.

Fort Pratt, Montana, is the setting for much of “Hell and Back,” a real place, where real tragedy occurred at the residential school there.

“(Civil War veteran Lt. Col.) Henry Pratt developed the boarding school system for the United States like that was basically a form of genocide, in many ways,” Johnson said.

He pointed out, though, that he began researching the topic before the public was made aware of the tens of thousands of Native American children who had died in those residential schools.

“My wife is like, ‘You know, every time you bring up an issue, it suddenly comes to light,’” Johnson said. “It’s really kind of pretty good timing. Because I was doing research (for this book) two years ago, and I think it was in the last year, they discovered all those mass graves up in Canada, and we’re discovering a lot of them here in the U.S., too.”

Walt Longmire, Mystic

There’s a spiritual, mystic thread that runs through Johnson’s books – recurring characters that exist on the edge of reality. Characters such as the vigilante “Hector” and the spiritual guide “Virgil White Buffalo” show up in many of Walt Longmire’s adventures.

Johnson said his friendship with tribal elders, his willingness to listen and ask questions, inspired much of the spiritual direction of both “Daughter Of the Morning Star” and “Hell and Back.”

“A good friend of mine, Charles Whiteman, who was a tribal elder from Northern Cheyenne – one time I remember sitting on his porch, talking with him, and his grandkids were out running around out there in the pasture,” Johnson said. “And he yelled at them using a term that I’d never heard before, which was ‘Eveohtse-heomese.’”

That term, which means, in essence, the “Wandering Without,” sparked something in Johnson, and inspired the mystic bent of both of his recent novels.

“I don’t like to go full blown Stephen King, you know,” he said. “But I’m also a big believer that there’s a lot more going on in the world around us than maybe we’re aware of.”

In this new book, Longmire finds himself face to face with those spirits. At the end of “Daughter of the Morning Star,” Longmire has headed north to Fort Pratt, Montana, where a fire at the American Indian residential school took the life of 31 children in 1896.

“He wakes up in the middle of the street covered in snow, with a silver dollar over both of his eyes,” Johnson said. “He looks around, he doesn’t recognize where he is – and for the first time in 18 books, Walt Longmire is unaware of who he is or where he is or why he is. And it does nothing but become more worrisome as the book goes on, because it seems like all the people Walt meets in this town of Fort Pratt are dead.”

“Hell and Back” Tour

As with his other books, Johnson is going on the road to promote his new book.

“It’s about a three week international tour,” he said, “pretty much going all over the country.”

And although he’ll be gone from his home in Ucross for lengthy periods of time, Johnson said he truly enjoys meeting readers, and supporting local bookstores.

“I have a good time doing the events,” he said. “I laugh about it, because I spend almost as much time with my readers as I do with my family.”

But while he’s preparing for this book tour, Johnson is wrapping up work on the next Longmire adventure.

“It’s kind of psychotic, isn’t it?” Johnson said. “Because you’ll be out promoting a book that you wrote last year, but people want to know about the book that you just finished, and it’ll be out next year. But then you’ve already started the book that’s coming out in two years.”

He pointed out that the popularity of the Longmire books transcends just the Rocky Mountain West, where the majority of the novels are set.

“The books are translated into 27 languages, in 27 countries, and with a TV show,” Johnson said. “It’s kind of amazing to see how far and how broad the audience is.”

“Hell and Back” will be available in bookstores and on audiobook on September 6th.

Famed author Craig Johnson talks new book ‘The Longmire Defense’ at Northwest Passages

Best-selling author Craig Johnson didn’t expect to rattle off two dozen Longmire books.

“I didn’t know I could write a second one or not,” the 61-year-old Johnson told a Spokane crowd Wednesday night.

But, 19 books, several collections of short stories and a popular A&E drama series later, Johnson did more than he could have ever dreamed.

Johnson returned to Spokane for the second year in a row to discuss his new book, “The Longmire Defense,” in front of a large crowd at the Bing Crosby Theater in downtown Spokane. The discussion, moderated by Spokesman-Review editor Rob Curley, was part of the newspaper’s book club event, Northwest Passages.

With a Rainier (Johnson’s favorite beer) ice chest between Johnson and Curley, Johnson talked about the plot twists of the new book, its various characters and some of his favorite authors, Westerns and cowboys of all time.

Johnson said Victoria “Vic” Moretti is his favorite character to write.

Johnson bases many characters off people he knows, weaving certain facets of them into his books.

“She bears a lot of the weight of a lot of the characters,” said Johnson, who lives on a ranch in Wyoming.

Johnson said his wife enjoys his female characters as well.

“So I’m not, like, sleeping in the barn or anything,” he said.

The series follows the popular and clever sheriff Walt Longmire of the fictional Wyoming county of Absaroka.

Johnson described Longmire as a “pretty good detective,” “naive” and someone who believes people are good and do the right thing.

When asked by an audience member whether Johnson was ever going to let Longmire grow up, Johnson said, “No, no, I like him the way he is.”

Johnson said his favorite Longmire book is the one he’s writing now because it’s requiring all his attention.

“That’s the one that you’re buried in right now,” he said.

Johnson’s success as an author translated to the screen with the television series “Longmire.”

The series debuted in 2012 and became the highest-rated original drama series on A&E, where it ran for three seasons. Netflix picked up the series after A&E failed to renew “Longmire.”

Three more seasons ran, as the series concluded in 2017.

Now Is the Time for a 'Longmire' Reunion

There's never been a better time for Walt Longmire to get back in the saddle.

The Big Picture

  • Longmire , A&E's highest-rated original drama series of all time, found new life on Netflix after being canceled in 2014.
  • While Yellowstone dominates the Western TV space, Longmire is the superior series, offering mystery, a talented cast, and a likable protagonist.
  • Longmire remains popular on Netflix, still ranking as the third most popular Western series, and there's potential for a triumphant return with new story arcs.

It's not often that the highest-rated series on a specific network gets canceled, but that's exactly what happened to Longmire back in 2014 after airing faithfully on A&E for three seasons. This Western mystery show, which appealed generally to older demographics, was deemed "A&E’s highest-rated original drama series of all time," and promptly found new life on Netflix. The show ran for three more seasons before ending again in 2017, and we haven't quite gotten over it. But now is the perfect time for Robert Taylor to return as the hardened, well-read sheriff of Absaroka County , and it's been a long time coming.

'Longmire' Can Fill the Void Left by 'Yellowstone'

Ever since Longmire ended, the Taylor Sheridan -helmed Yellowstone has dominated the Western TV space. While not a mystery series like Longmire , the Paramount Network original scratches many of the neo-Western itches left behind by Walt and his friends. With Kevin Costner front and center and Longmire co-creator John Covney named a producer in the show's early years, Yellowstone has become nothing short of a television empire in a short time, producing two prequels, multiple in-development spin-offs , and plenty of derivative works that ride off Sheridan and Costner's success. But the one thing Yellowstone doesn't have is Sheriff Walt Longmire , and that's only one of the many reasons Longmire is the superior series.

But with the flagship Yellowstone series wrapping up in 2024 and Costner departing the franchise in favor of his upcoming multipart epic, Horizon: An American Saga , now seems like the right time for Longmire to reclaim its Western throne . In many ways, Yellowstone thrives because of its gorgeous landscapes, talented cast, and dark material, but these are all things that Longmire has going for it as well. To make things even more interesting, Longmire also has the mystery factor that keeps audiences on the edge of their seat. While the Paramount series is slowing down to a crawl, Longmire never once felt like a chore to watch, even in its final season.

Paramount has proven that Western-themed material can go a long way these days, especially on streaming. Likewise, Prime Video's Jack Ryan , The Terminal List , and Reacher have reminded us that action and mystery novel adaptations do just as well, maybe even better in some cases. Well, Longmire has all of these things, and with the plethora of Craig Johnson 's original Walt Longmire books behind it, could easily return as if it never left. While it's not likely that Longmire will ever return for good, we'll take anything we can get. Even if it's a 90-minute Netflix Original or a six-episode limited series, Walt Longmire has been missed, and it's time that he, and in turn we , return to Absaroka.

Walt Longmire Is the Thoughtful Western Hero We Need More of Today

Walt Longmire (Robert Taylor) in his sheriff's uniform, looking at something off-camera in Longmire

Perhaps the biggest reason Walt Longmire is missed these days is due to the serious lack of complicated and learned Western heroes. The Duttons on Yellowstone are complicated , sure, but not exactly heroic. Michael Dorman 's Joe Pickett from the Paramount mystery series of the same name is heroic and complicated, but not exactly the smartest tool in the shed (a Longmire/Pickett crossover would be a dream come true, though). But Walt Longmire is all of these things. Though he doesn't always get it right, Walt is a master of deduction from the Sherlock Holmes school of thought and can put together just about any mystery you throw at him. But more than that, he's a likable guy who grew a lot over the six years we followed him.

While there are some differences between the book and TV versions of Walt Longmire, Robert Taylor plays the character perfectly . His unique, gruffish charm and rustic take on the character make audiences wish that we could "Vote Longmire" every time. His use of books like Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and John Steinbeck 's Of Mice and Men as the basis for his unique brand of law enforcement is both admirable and interesting, and his attempts to get his deputies to read the same sorts of stories, while often futile, is endearing. Walt is a complex man who isn't afraid to get his hands dirty or tackle hard issues that aren't easily solved , but even when he does so, he doesn't cross certain lines. An honorable and consistent lawman, Walt Longmire is the type of protagonist you rarely see much of these days, including in the contemporary Western genre .

Of course, Robert Taylor deserves a lot of praise for how well Walt Longmire was received . The Australian actor––who thrived in the role and hasn't quite found the same sort of success on American television since––embodies the character perfectly and has often interacted with fans, particularly at the annual "Longmire Days" celebration in Buffalo, Wyoming. (Yes, there is a "Longmire Days" festival every year in Wyoming, which celebrates the character, which may be enough proof of why we need more Longmire sooner rather than later.)

'Longmire' Is Still as Popular as Ever, and There's a Good Reason for That

Katee Sackhoff as Victoria 'Vic' Moretti and Robert Taylor as Walt Longmire, standing outside by a truck and looking dismayed in Longmire

Although it's been nearly a decade since Longmire last dropped an episode, the show has retained a consistently faithful audience on streaming ever since. Walt Longmire author Craig Johnson noted on his Facebook on February 1, 2024, that Longmire is still scoring as #3 in Westerns on Netflix . No wonder it shows up so consistently on our list of Best Westerns to watch on the streamer , it really is that good. With six seasons and 63 episodes, Longmire is one of those shows that's easy to revisit and harder to walk away from. Its impressive cast, which includes Katee Sackhoff , Lou Diamond Phillips , and Bailey Chase , is always a blast to watch on screen and is just as notable as Robert Taylor's Walt. The friendship between Walt and his best friend Henry Standing Bear (Phillips) could easily carry the series on its own.

But according to Johnson, we may have been robbed of more Longmire . The author revealed that previously, A&E had hoped to buy Longmire from Warner Bros., but the studio wouldn't sell the brand, so the network canceled the series . A&E lost nearly a third of its audience as a result, only for Netflix to swoop in and continue the series. "[ Longmire ] quickly became one of the highest-rated, original-content shows [Netflix] ever had," Johnson explained in 2022 (via Cowboy State Daily ). "Smooth sailing for two more seasons and then guess what? Netflix wanted Warner Brothers to sell Longmire to them." No wonder Netflix too tried to buy it themselves, but knowing the gold mine they had on their hands, Warner Bros. refused to sell. At least this time, Longmire was able to conclude naturally.

"There’s a constant buzz about the return of the series, a potential Season 7 or made-for-TV movies, but nothing concrete," Johnson continued, explaining that both Warner Bros. and Netflix have noted Longmire 's success on the streaming platform even long after its cancelation. "Once again, victims of our own success," he remarked. But if Netflix and Warner Bros. were to play ball for another Walt Longmire production, they'd discover the sort of success that would make Tom Selleck 's Jesse Stone series jealous. And likely without much effort at all.

Craig Johnson's Two-Part 'Longmire' Mystery Would Be the Perfect Basis for a Return

While Longmire often diverted from the original Craig Johnson-penned source material, the show occasionally adapted elements from the books to the screen . The very first Longmire novel, The Cold Dish , for example, was directly adapted in the Season 1 episode "Unfinished Business." Likewise, elements of The Dark Horse appeared in "A Damn Shame," and Hell is Empty was loosely adapted in Season 2's "Unquiet Mind." As the show continued, Longmire borrowed less and less from the Johnson series, instead opting to develop new storylines and continue the arcs of original series characters like Jacob Nighthorse ( A Martinez ), which is understandable given how interesting Nighthorse can be.

But there's an arc from the original Walt Longmire Mysteries that would be the perfect catalyst to bring Walt back for more , despite having all but handed over his title as sheriff to his daughter Cady ( Cassidy Freeman ). In the thirteenth novel, The Western Star , Johnson weaves a tale between Walt's past and present in an homage to Agatha Christie that thrills you the whole way. The dueling narrative centers on Walt reflecting on an old mystery from his early days as a lawman on a passenger locomotive known as the Western Star. The story seamlessly weaves Walt's past (something Longmire never delved much into) with his present, and ends with a serious cliffhanger as his longtime nemesis, Tomás Bidarte, kidnaps his daughter.

Michael Landon from Bonanza, Clayton Moore from The Lone Ranger, and Burt Reynolds in Gunsmoke

This Western TV Show From the ’50s Was Way Before Its Time

A cartel man who has been called "a Moriarty to Walt’s Holmes" by some , Bidarte tragically never appeared on the Longmire show, though he would've fit in perfectly. With his television foes, Chance Gilbert ( Peter Stormare ) and Malachi Strand ( Graham Greene of Echo fame), taken care of in the show's final season, a Longmire reunion could easily return to the character's roots and pit him against his literary adversary . The second part of the narrative, Depth of Winter , takes Walt to Mexico in an admittedly controversial installment due to his separation from Wyoming. Of course, the book would likely be adapted differently for the series. Here, Walt plays the part of the traditional Western hero and manages to pull off the impossible, rescuing Cady from Bidarte and dispatching his nemesis for good. It's an excellent two-parter and one that the minds behind Longmire would do well to adapt to the Netflix series in some form.

More Walt Longmire Mysteries Are Underway, Even if the Show Never Returns

Even if we never get another live-action Walt Longmire adaptation again (and we certainly hope we do), we can rest knowing that there are plenty of Longmire adventures out there and even more still underway . Of course, we're talking about the previously mentioned Craig Johnson series of books. While they differ from the television show, the Longmire books are exciting reads that any fan of the character can enjoy. Though this author recommends starting at the beginning with The Cold Dish , plenty of new Walt Longmire mysteries have made their way into bookstores ever since the show ended in 2017. The aforementioned Depth of Winter was published in 2018 and every year since, a new Longmire novel has made it to bookshelves everywhere.

The most recent Longmire novel, The Longmire Defense , dropped in September 2023 and follows Walt as he seeks to clear his ancestor's name. The next book, First Frost , will explore Walt and Henry's past as they're drafted for the Vietnam War and the road trip across Route 66 they took together just before their deployment; it's set to be released on May 28. If reading isn't quite your thing, excellent audio productions of each of Craig Johnson's Walt Longmire novels have been made , read by George Guidall , who fits the bill perfectly. Of course, we hope that Netflix and Warner Bros. might one day work together so that Robert Taylor and company can return for more Longmire , but until then we'll just have to wonder if he ever found that buried treasure Lucian was going on about.

Longmire can be streamed exclusively on Netflix.
