How to solve Math Word Problems 4th Grade
Multi step word problems 4th grade - mage math, sharing buttons:.
00:00 hey there before we jump into the video
00:02 I want to tell you about our math video
00:04 game called mage math the game will help
00:06 your child feel more confident in math
00:08 and our math videos are inside the game
00:10 to really help your child succeed you
00:13 can find the game in all our videos at
00:15 mage math comm there will be a link in
00:18 the description as well hey guys I have
00:21 multiple problems I am dealing with
00:23 right now
00:23 I am lost in this place and I am also
00:26 being chased by a snake I think I lost
00:30 the snake I guess not
00:34 why don't you learn about multi-step
00:37 word problems while I solved my problems
00:39 - did you hear about my friend Tom Tom
00:44 biked 35 miles in June 73 miles in July
00:50 and 64 miles in August that's a lot of
00:54 bike riding how many miles did he bike
00:58 altogether let's use addition to
01:02 determine how many miles Tom biked in
01:04 total do you remember how we can add 35
01:08 plus 73 + 64 that's right we need to
01:15 stack our numbers lining up each place
01:18 value now we can add down in the ones
01:21 column 5 plus 3 plus 4 is 12 because we
01:28 can only write one digit below the ones
01:31 column we put a two below and we carry
01:34 the 1 to the next column
01:36 next we add down in the tens column
01:39 starting with the one that we just
01:41 carried 1 plus 3 plus 7 plus 6 is 17 we
01:50 can write 17 below just make sure the 1
01:53 is in the hundreds column altogether we
01:57 found Tom Road 172 miles have you met my
02:04 mom Lily she had 331 dollars to spend on
02:09 birthday gifts for her family Lily
02:11 bought a doll for 3
02:13 eight dollars and a tablet for $99 how
02:18 much money does she have left there's a
02:22 few different ways to solve this problem
02:23 but I want to start with figuring out
02:25 how much money she spent altogether on
02:29 the doll and tablet that means we will
02:32 add 38 plus 99 I'm going to start by
02:38 writing the addition problem vertically
02:40 and then I'll add the ones column 8 plus
02:44 9 is 17 I know I can only put one digit
02:48 below
02:48 so I'll write 7 below and carry the 1 to
02:51 the tens column now let's add in the
02:54 tens column one plus three plus nine is
03:01 Lily spent $137 total on the doll AM
03:06 tablet so how much money does she have
03:10 left if Lily started with three hundred
03:14 thirty one dollars and spent $137 we
03:20 need to subtract 331 - 137 just like an
03:27 addition we'll start by subtracting in
03:29 the ones column 1 - 7 hmm I cannot take
03:34 away 7 from 1 so we'll have to borrow
03:37 from the tens column cross out the three
03:41 write a 2 above it then we'll cross out
03:45 the 1 and write 11 this shows that we
03:48 borrowed now we can subtract 11 minus 7
03:52 which is 4 okay now we repeat the
03:57 process in the tens column we have 2
04:00 minus 300 I can't take away 3 from 2 so
04:05 we have to borrow again this time from
04:08 the hundreds column cross out the 3 and
04:11 write a 2 and now we will show our
04:15 borrowing by crossing out the 2 and
04:17 writing 12 now let's subtract 12 minus 3
04:24 great job
04:26 we're almost done now we need to
04:29 subtract in the hundreds column two
04:32 minus one is one
04:35 we found that 331 - 137 is 194 therefore
04:44 Lily has one hundred ninety-four dollars
04:47 left after she bought the doll and
04:49 tablet let's look at another problem a
04:54 soda factory can put sixteen sodas in
04:57 one box
04:58 they have already filled three boxes how
05:03 many boxes will be filled all together
05:05 if they have 78 more sodas first of all
05:09 that's a lot of soda if sixteen sodas
05:13 can fit into one box we will divide 78
05:17 by 16 to find how many boxes are needed
05:20 for those sodas notice this set up for
05:23 our division problem using the long
05:25 division sign 78 is the dividend and it
05:29 goes under the long division sign where
05:32 16 is the divisor so it goes outside and
05:36 to the left
05:37 we need to figure out how many times 16
05:41 goes into 78 hmm let's try 4 4 times 6
05:48 is 24 we will write 4 below the 8 and
05:52 carry the 2 above the 1 in 16 now
05:57 multiply 4 times 1 which is 4 but we're
06:01 gonna add to that we had carried 4 plus
06:05 2 is 6
06:07 therefore 16 times 4 is 64 next draw a
06:14 line and change the sign so we subtract
06:17 78 minus 64
06:19 we can do this in our place value
06:23 columns starting with 8 minus 4 which is
06:27 4 and 7 minus 6 which is 1 so 78 minus
06:33 64 equals 14 and since 14 is less than
06:38 our divisor 6
06:40 we're done with the long division and we
06:44 know that we have a remainder of 14
06:46 sodas so what does our answer really
06:49 mean we need four boxes to hold 64 sodas
06:55 plus one more box to hold 14 remaining
06:58 sodas in other words we need five boxes
07:03 to hold all 78 sodas let's revisit the
07:07 problem though the factory started with
07:11 three boxes and needed to add more for
07:14 the 78 sodas we just found out that we
07:17 needed five boxes to hold the 78 sodas
07:21 therefore altogether we need three plus
07:25 five equals eight boxes total to hold
07:29 all the sodas nice work
07:34 let's look at another problem the fifth
07:37 grade is taking a field trip to a local
07:39 museum they can fit eleven students in
07:43 each small bus and two buses have
07:46 already been loaded how many buses will
07:49 they take all together if they need to
07:51 load 58 more students we can use
07:56 division to find how many small buses
07:58 can hold 58 students if each bus holds
08:02 11 students we can divide 58 by 11 to
08:06 find the number of buses let's set up
08:10 our division problem 58 is the dividend
08:14 and it goes under the long division sign
08:16 and 11 is our divisor and goes out in
08:20 front of the sign how many times does 11
08:24 go into 58 without going over that's
08:27 right five times so multiply 5 times 11
08:32 which is 55 so we write that below and
08:36 then we're going to draw a line and
08:38 change the sign to subtract 58 minus 55
08:43 is 3 3 is our remainder and this means
08:48 that we have three students who will
08:51 also need an additional bus
08:53 so overall five buses will hold 55
08:58 students plus we'll need a sixth bus to
09:01 hold the last three remaining students
09:04 let's revisit the original problem the
09:08 schools already had two buses filled and
09:12 we need six more buses to hold 58 more
09:16 students altogether we need 2 plus 6
09:20 equals 8 buses nice work Shh I think I
09:29 lost the snake and found my way out I
09:33 guess not see you guys later thank you
