The story opens over summer vacation. Harry Potter has spent the whole summer at his Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon’s house listening to the news, seeking signs of attacks or disturbances committed by Voldemort or his loyal followers. One evening, Harry and his cousin Dudley are attacked by Dementors. Harry uses magic—a Patronus charm—to fight them off, landing him in deep trouble with the Ministry of Magic. He is threatened with expulsion from Hogwarts, but after a hearing at the Ministry of Magic, Harry is allowed to remain in school.

Harry is met by a group of wizards led by Mad-Eye Moody, Professor Lupin, Nymphadora Tonks, and Kingsley Shacklebolt and taken to Sirius Black’s childhood home. Harry’s friends, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley , are there. They explain to Harry that the house is the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix, a secret organization of wizards dedicated to battling Voldemort and his Death Eaters. The Order has learned that Voldemort is seeking an object, possibly a weapon. Fearing the panic the knowledge would cause, the Ministry of Magic, led by Cornelius Fudge, refuses to admit that Voldemort has returned and thus is doing nothing to combat him.

At school, Harry meets the new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, Dolores Umbridge . Umbridge refuses to teach any actual defense spells, claiming they are unnecessary, and she and Harry clash. When Umbridge is named High Inquisitor, giving her the authority to evaluate all faculty members and allowing her to monitor all communication in and out of the school, Harry, Hermione, and Ron form their own Defense Against the Dark Arts group, calling themselves Dumbledore’s Army after the school’s headmaster, Albus Dumbledore . Dozens of other students join them to train in defensive spells.

Harry has a recurring dream that he is walking down a hallway in the Ministry of Magic. He has a vivid vision where he is a snake attacking Ron’s father. When he wakes up, he is taken to Dumbledore. A snake did attack Mr. Weasley, but Mr. Weasley was rescued in time, thanks to Harry’s dream. Harry learns that the dreams indicate he has access to Voldemort’s mind. Dumbledore orders Occlumency lessons so Harry can learn to resist any attempt by Voldemort to penetrate Harry’s mind. However, Harry has difficulty with this new training, as it is taught by Professor Snape, who dislikes Harry intensely. Harry continues to share Voldemort’s extreme emotions.

Umbridge discovers Dumbledore’s Army. Dumbledore takes the blame to save the children from expulsion and then leaves the castle. Umbridge is named headmistress. As the students finish up their O.W.L. examinations, Harry has another dream. This time, he sees his godfather, Sirius Black , being tortured. Hermione is concerned that Voldemort is using these dreams to lure Harry into a trap, but Harry is determined to save Sirius. Harry sneaks into Umbridge’s office to use her fireplace to communicate with those in Sirius’s house. Kreacher, the house elf, confirms that Sirius is at the Ministry of Magic.

Umbridge catches Harry and his friends in her office. They trick her, telling her they are hiding a weapon in the forest for Dumbledore. She accompanies them into the forest, where centaurs stop them. Umbridge insults the centaurs with species slurs. Outraged, they carry her off. Harry, Hermione, Ron, and their friends Ginny Weasley (Ron’s sister), Luna Lovegood, and Neville Longbottom mount Thestrals and fly to the Ministry of Magic.

At the Ministry, Sirius is nowhere to be found. Harry locates the room he has been dreaming of and finds that one of the glass spheres has his name and Voldemort’s on it. The Death Eaters attack. Harry and his friends have some initial success defending themselves, surprising the Death Eaters with their skills, but begin to lose ground until members of the Order of the Phoenix arrive, turning the tide. During the battle, Harry passes the sphere to Neville, whose pocket rips, causing the glass sphere to shatter. Sirius is killed by his cousin Bellatrix Lestrange. Dumbledore arrives, rounding up and binding the Death Eaters.

Harry chases after Bellatrix. Voldemort arrives. As he attacks Harry, Dumbledore comes to Harry’s rescue, dueling with Voldemort. Voldemort and Bellatrix escape. Back at Hogwarts, Dumbledore explains to Harry that the sphere was a prophecy telling of a power Harry possesses unknown to Voldemort: love. The prophecy states that Harry will either kill Voldemort or be killed by him—“Neither can live while the other survives.” Dumbledore explains that this is why Harry must spend his summers with his Aunt Petunia—his mother’s love protects him, and he must maintain the blood link to that love by living in his aunt’s house. Knowing the summer will be miserable, Harry accepts his fate and returns to his aunt’s house, where he will spend another summer listening to the news and waiting for something terrible to happen.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is the fifth book in J. K. Rowling 's Harry Potter book series . It was one of the most widely-anticipated books of the series, since there was a wait of three years between it and the previous book, Goblet of Fire . At 38 chapters, it is also the longest book in the series, having jokingly been labelled as heavier than a refrigerator (by Stephen Fry at the Royal Albert Hall event) and used as a benchmark for the size of the next two books.

" Harry Potter is in his fifth year at Hogwarts School as the adventures continue. There is a door at the end of a silent corridor. And it's haunting Harry Potter's dreams. Why else would he be waking in the middle of the night, screaming in terror? Harry has a lot on his mind for this, his fifth year at Hogwarts: a Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher with a personality like poisoned honey; a big surprise on the Gryffindor Quidditch team; and the looming terror of the Ordinary Wizarding Level exams.

But all these things pale next to the growing threat of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, one that neither the magical government nor the authorities at Hogwarts can stop. As the grasp of darkness tightens, Harry must discover the true depth and strength of his friends, the importance of boundless loyalty, and the shocking price of unbearable sacrifice. His fate depends on them all.

The book that took the world by storm. In his fifth year at Hogwarts, Harry faces challenges at every turn, from the dark threat of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named and the unreliability of the government of the magical world to the rise of Ron Weasley as the Keeper of the Gryffindor Quidditch Team. Along the way he learns about the strength of his friends, the fierceness of his enemies, and the meaning of sacrifice."

Chapter 1: Dudley Demented [ ]

On the hottest day of summer so far, Harry Potter remains at his house, 4 Privet Drive , living with his Muggle aunt, uncle and cousin and severely cut off from the rest of the wizarding world. The neighbourhood is suffering from an exhausting heat wave and due to this, Harry spends the majority of his summer out of the house, going on walks and trying to avoid his aunt and uncle as much as possible because the paranoid pair won't stop badgering him over his interest in the news. He is constantly rummaging through bins for old newspapers, searching for front-page news about the return of Lord Voldemort in the Daily Prophet . However, nothing unusual is reported, so Harry assumes that the Minister for Magic , Cornelius Fudge is still as oblivious and in denial of Lord Voldemort 's return as he was before .

Harry trying to hear news about Voldemort's return

After running into his cousin, Dudley Dursley and his street gang on a walk, Harry confronts Dudley after his gang leaves which turns into an argument, where Dudley mocks Harry about Cedric 's death, having heard Harry use that name in his sleep. Harry immediately denies it and when Harry takes out his wand and pretends to curse Dudley with it; a cold chill comes onto the duo and Harry and Dudley are then attacked by Dementors . Harry attempts the Patronus Charm three times and is successful on the last try, and is surprised to find Mrs Figg , his old, cat -loving neighbour, storming up the road towards the two teenagers. He tries to hide his wand, but she tells him to keep it out in case more of them show up. She is furious about Mundungus Fletcher , who was supposed to be watching Harry for the Order of the Phoenix but had Disapparated from the front of 4 Privet Drive only moments earlier.

Petunia receives a Howler

While angry over the situation, Mrs Figg explains to a surprised Harry she is actually a Squib . The two take a Demented Dudley back to Privet Drive, where Mrs Figg mentions she was sent by Dumbledore to watch over Harry and also kept his visits to her house boring so the Dursleys would not send Harry elsewhere if he were happy. After Mundungus Fletcher shows up, Mrs Figg scolds him for his foolish actions before sending him to inform Dumbledore of this situation so he can act quickly. Just before they part, Harry learns that Dumbledore has been keeping him under observation in order to protect him after what had happened with Voldemort last month. When Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon notice Dudley in his sickly state they fawn over him and Harry attempts to slip away, but Dudley speaks and assumes that Harry attacked him with some sort of spell since Muggles cannot see Dementors.

Before Harry can explain himself, the Ministry of Magic sends Harry a letter telling him that he's been expelled from Hogwarts for underage magic . Before Harry attempts to run away before Ministry officials would come by to destroy his wand, another letter from Arthur Weasley arrives telling Harry that Dumbledore is trying to sort this out and to stay put in his house, not surrender his wand, and not to perform any more magic. As Harry is explaining that the Dementors are responsible, Petunia surprisingly shows she has some knowledge of the Dementors. A second letter from the Ministry arrives stating that Dumbledore has convinced them to set up a hearing on 12 August to decide whether or not to break Harry's wand and Harry is being placed on suspension instead of being expelled.

After Harry explains to the Dursleys about the Dementor's abilities, Vernon is ready to throw Harry out, as he has always yearned to do so since receiving Harry, when Petunia receives a Howler . Before she has an opportunity to open the letter, it bursts into flames and a menacing voice says, "Remember my last, Petunia". Petunia then immediately convinces her husband to let Harry remain at Privet Drive and tells Harry that he needs to stay in his room. Harry has no idea of what's going on.

The Advance Guard

Harry immediately writes letters to Sirius, Hermione, and Ron . After four days of being locked in his room, while dealing with his anger from the lack of response, Uncle Vernon, Aunt Petunia, and Dudley leave to attend an award ceremony for the best kept suburban lawn in England (which was a hoax set up by Tonks to lure the Dursleys away from their house) and a number of witches and wizards (auto denominated the " Advance Guard ") come to rescue Harry from the Dursleys' home. They are members of the Order of the Phoenix , an elite group whose members fight Lord Voldemort and the Death Eaters. Among them were the real Mad-Eye Moody and Remus Lupin , along with some newcomers such as Nymphadora Tonks and Kingsley Shacklebolt . Lupin reveals that their destination is a hidden place that is much safer than the Burrow . Lupin leaves a note for the Dursleys , then the entire group begins a long flight on broomsticks. After flying through the cold night, they land at their destination and Moody gives Harry a piece of parchment that mentions their headquarters, 12 Grimmauld Place .

Shrunken house-elves' heads

They bring Harry to their headquarters, 12 Grimmauld Place ( London ). The Weasleys , Hermione Granger , and Harry’s godfather Sirius Black are there. While the Order of the Phoenix are having a meeting, Mrs Weasley takes Harry to the room where Ron and Hermione are before heading back. Harry converses with Hermione and Ron and learns to his ire that Dumbledore was the reason he had no contact from his friends all summer, though Ron and Hermione were uncomfortable with this, knowing how Harry would feel. They comfort Harry by explaining that they haven't been let in on everything that has been going on either since they are too young and have mostly been working on cleaning up the house as no one has lived there for years. Fred and George then appear magically through Apparition , revealing to Harry they passed their test, followed by Ginny walking into the room and tells the twins it is now pointless for them to spy on the meetings any more. The Weasley children reveal that—besides Severus Snape who has joined the Order—Bill and Charlie have also joined. Also that Bill has moved back to England to be closer to the family and has been teaching the former Triwizard champion Fleur Delacour who has also been working at Gringotts in order to improve her English, while Charlie has been given the task of recruiting foreign wizards to their cause.

As for Percy, the Weasley children sadly reveal he has deserted their family after he and Arthur had a fight over Percy's recent promotion to Cornelius Fudge's Junior Assistant. Having denied his father's claims that Fudge is using him, with his unwavering loyalty to the Ministry, Percy has moved away, breaking off contact in the process, even after a depressed Molly Weasley tried to straighten things out. Harry also learns that the Ministry has been using the Daily Prophet to build on what Rita Skeeter started and is portraying Harry as some "attention-seeking liar". Hermione also reveals there have been no articles on the Dementor attack or Harry's hearing, since the Ministry is likely waiting until the hearing is over before reporting on the likelihood of Harry being expelled. After being called down for dinner, Tonks accidentally trips on an umbrella stand, which causes too much noise, and the portrait of a woman responds with strong cursing. While helping on closing the curtains, Sirius shows up and reveals the woman in the portrait is his mother .

Dinner is served at Order's Headquarters

Sirius explains to Harry that Number 12, Grimmauld Place is the Black family 's ancestral home and that he inherited it upon his mother's death. While they are setting up for dinner, Sirius reveals that compared to Harry, he has been confined in the house for a month since he is still a wanted criminal and that Voldemort and the Death Eaters would know he is an Animagus by now due to Wormtail informing them, which makes him almost useless to the Order. Fred and George almost stab Sirius' hand when they send a cauldron of stew, an iron flagon of butterbeer and a breadboard with a knife to the table and the knife slips off, which infuriates their parents, as they have been using their magic irresponsibly ever since they came of age . They then have dinner, and numerous conversations go around, with Bill mentioning to his father and Lupin that the goblins won't join their side due to what happened with Ludo Bagman , and Mundungus Fletcher mentioning his business dealings before Molly asks him to stop. After dinner, Sirius tries to tell Harry about the latest events and about their plans, but Molly keeps saying that Harry is too young and that Dumbledore told them not to tell Harry "more than he needs to know". After the two argue about it, Molly reluctantly allows Harry and everyone else but Ginny to stay and listen.

Harry learns that Voldemort is keeping a low profile and is building an army. Though Harry managed to escape during Voldemort's rebirth , allowing Dumbledore to reactivate the Order of the Phoenix, it is difficult for them to convince as many people what has happened because of the Ministry and Fudge's position, since Fudge believes that Dumbledore is after his job; his fears make it easier for him to believe that, rather than admit Voldemort is back, which would end the last fourteen years of peace. Another reason the Order is having trouble with finding allies is the issue of their credibility. Sirius is a wanted murderer, Lupin is a werewolf, and the members that work for the Ministry would lose their jobs since Fudge is willing to sack anyone just for disagreeing with him. Fudge has also been trying to discredit Dumbledore's reputation to prevent him from spreading the information, and is having the Daily Prophet cover up any news related to this. Sirius attempts to mention that Voldemort is trying to retrieve a "weapon...something he didn't have last time", before Molly and Lupin ask him to stop, and they then send the kids off to bed.

Chapter 6: The Noble and Most Ancient House of Black [ ]

Books chapterart ootp 06

After Harry and Ron head into their room, Fred and George Apparate inside, where the four briefly discuss their speculation on what Voldemort might be seeking before their mother's footsteps convince the twins they have to get back to their own room. The next day while helping with the cleaning of the house with Mrs Weasley and the other children, Harry talks in secret with Fred and George and learns their joke shop plans are booming thanks to the money he gave them though they haven't got premises yet and their mother remains unaware of it due to the fact she had cancelled their subscription to the Daily Prophet out of disgust. While Molly is busy arguing with Mundungus Fletcher in another room, Harry meets Kreacher , the domestic-elf of the House of Black. He is always cursing and muttering bad words, on occasion calling Hermione a mudblood and then insulting Sirius for betraying his mother's trust after Sirius arrives before Kreacher heads to another room. Harry notices an old tapestry, that Sirius sarcastically explains is the family tree of the "Noble and Most Ancient House of Black". Sirius reveals that he was disowned by his family at the age of sixteen and lived with Harry's father James and his parents before his uncle , who was disowned as well, left Sirius some money to live on his own.

Sirius mentions to Harry that his younger brother Regulus Black , who was more obedient to their parents' wishes, had been a Death Eater . Sirius explains that his family was all for the purification of the wizarding race, getting rid of Muggle-borns and having pure-bloods in charge , and while not all of them were Death Eaters, they agreed with Voldemort's ideals. Sirius mentions that his brother was killed, presumably for attempting to abandon the Death Eaters. After Molly calls them down for lunch, Harry stays with Sirius and Sirius explains more about his family. Harry is then surprised to learn that Sirius is related to the Malfoys through Lucius 's wife Narcissa . He also learns that Tonks' mother Andromeda is Sirius's cousin, and that she was also disowned. Both she and Narcissa had a sister, Bellatrix , who was sent to Azkaban . She is the woman Harry saw in Dumbledore's Pensieve during Barty Crouch Jnr 's trial .

Sirius then mentions his parents' home is only being used as the Order of the Phoenix's headquarters due to the protective enchantments his father put on it years ago and the additional security measures that Dumbledore set up, which is why he had to put up with moving back in. After several more days of cleaning, on the night before Harry's hearing, Molly mentions that Arthur will be escorting him to the Ministry on his way to work.

Chapter 7: The Ministry of Magic [ ]

The next day, Harry heads down to breakfast and learns that Amelia Bones will be in charge of his hearing, and Tonks assures him that she is fair. Sirius reminds Harry not to lose his temper during the hearing. Harry is nervous over the possibility of being expelled from Hogwarts, but Lupin assures Harry that underage wizards are allowed to use magic in life-threatening situations. Arthur Weasley then escorts Harry to the Ministry for his disciplinary hearing using the train in the London Underground to get there (since Harry can't Apparate). They access the Ministry through a dilapidated telephone booth. In the Atrium , Harry sees a fountain with statues of wizards, witches and magical creatures and several fireplaces where workers Apparate and Disapparate. After spending time on the lift getting to the Department of Magical Law Enforcement and then putting on an act with Kingsley about Sirius Black (due to the need to keep their affiliation secret), they arrive in Mr Weasley's office. Mr Weasley's co-worker, Perkins , runs in announcing that the hearing's time and location has been changed, and Harry is already late. The new location is in old Courtroom Ten in the Ministry's basement. Since the lift does not descend that far, Harry and Mr Weasley race down the stairs the rest of the way after getting off. Just outside the courtroom, Mr Weasley stops, telling Harry that he must face the hearing alone.

Harry at his disciplinary hearing

Chapter 8: The Hearing [ ]

Harry recognises the courtroom is the same one he saw in Dumbledore's Pensieve during his last school year. Cornelius Fudge is acting as the head of the Wizengamot , and Harry is also surprised to see Percy Weasley acting as scribe, although Percy refuses to look at Harry. After Dumbledore arrives, Fudge starts the trial without giving Harry a chance to defend himself. Once Harry gets the chance to explain about the Dementors, Fudge labels his statement a convenient lie, but Dumbledore is able to produce a reliable witness: Mrs Figg, whom Percy brings in. Mrs Figg is able to describe the attack and confirms that the Dementors attacked Harry and Dudley .

When Fudge points out the unlikelihood of Dementors in Little Whinging, Dumbledore suggests that someone within the Ministry ordered them there. Fudge, however, refuses to accept any of this as evidence and while Dumbledore reminds him that magic can be used in these extraordinary circumstances. Fudge dismisses this, given Harry's past issues, reminding them of the illegal use of a Hover Charm three years ago. While this was Dobby 's fault, Fudge refuses Dumbledore's suggestion to bring him in and also brings up the fact that Harry inflated his aunt a year later, even though no charges were pressed.

Fudge also tries to bring up Harry's rule-breaking at Hogwarts, but Dumbledore reminds Fudge that the Ministry does not have the authority to punish students for what they do at school. He points out the irregularity of the hastiness for this trial and attempt to destroy Harry's wand without successfully proving these charges, and also the use of the full Wizengamot for a simple case of under-age magic. When the Wizengamot takes a vote, Harry is cleared of all charges with more than half of the Wizengamot raising their hands to clear him, though Fudge is slightly angry when he casts the verdict. Dumbledore leaves before Harry can thank him.

Chapter 9: The Woes of Mrs Weasley [ ]

Harry is puzzled by Dumbledore's actions before he leaves the courtroom and tells Mr Weasley, who was waiting outside, that he had been cleared of all charges. Mr Weasley is surprised that Harry was tried before the entire Wizengamot, as they are also leaving the courtroom, with some showing them recognition, while others, like Fudge and Percy, completely ignore them. Arthur decides to take Harry back to Grimmauld Place before he heads out on an assignment. On their way they see Fudge meeting with Lucius Malfoy . While Harry believes that Fudge may have been put under the Imperius Curse , Mr Weasley states that Dumbledore has doubted this, believing Fudge is acting of his own accord. Back at Grimmauld Place, everybody celebrates Harry's acquittal.

A few days later, on the last day of the holidays, the children receive their Hogwarts letters and Ron and Hermione are named prefects . Molly Weasley is so pleased with Ron's appointment as a prefect that she agrees to Ron's request to get a new broomstick (though an inexpensive one) when she goes to Diagon Alley to pick up their new books. Harry feels some resentment that Ron was chosen over him as prefect, given all he has done at Hogwarts over the years. Later that night, Mrs Weasley prepares a dinner party for the new prefects. During the party, Harry feels better when he learns from Sirius that he and Harry's father James were not made prefects either during their fifth year at Hogwarts, since Lupin was selected for that position instead.

After the party, Mrs Weasley goes upstairs to get rid of the Boggart Alastor Moody identified for her earlier. Moody shows Harry an old photograph of the original Order of the Phoenix and identifies the people in the photograph, though hearing Moody describe the terrible fates of some of the members in the photograph makes Harry feel uncomfortable. After going upstairs, Harry finds that the sight of her worst fears (all her family members and Harry dead) was too much for Mrs Weasley; she started to cry before Lupin gets rid of the Boggart after arriving upstairs with Sirius and Moody. As they help calm her down, Mrs Weasley wonders about the future of her loved ones.

Luna Lovegood reading The Quibbler

On the day of departure to Platform Nine and Three-Quarters , the group is rushing to get ready as the children will be taken there under guard per Moody's recommendation. Mrs Weasley is angry with Fred and George for bewitching their trunks instead of trying to carry them downstairs and knocking Ginny off-balance. Harry is assigned to go with Molly and Tonks. Sirius accompanies them in his Animagus form. After the Hogwarts Express departs, with Ron and Hermione having to go to the prefects' carriage, Harry shares a compartment with Ginny, Neville Longbottom , and a girl from Ginny's year named Luna Lovegood , who is a Ravenclaw student. Later Ron and Hermione show up and tell them who the new prefects are for the other houses, including Draco Malfoy and Pansy Parkinson for Slytherin . Luna is reading a tabloid magazine called The Quibbler , of which, she tells them, her father is the editor, after Hermione makes an insensitive comment towards the magazine.

Draco and his cronies then show up briefly and Draco makes fun of the fact that Ron was chosen over Harry for the position of prefect and his comment "dogging around" causes Harry to worry that Draco might know now that Sirius is an Animagus. After arriving at Hogsmeade station Harry notices that instead of Hagrid, Professor Grubbly-Plank , who previously substituted for Hagrid during their last school year, is there to direct the first years to their boats. When boarding their carriage Harry notices that the carriages are being pulled by some sort of winged horses . He points them out to Ron and Hermione, but they cannot see them, and act worried when he insists that they are right there. Luna says that she can see them, and in fact could see them ever since she first came to Hogwarts. Harry is mystified, since he couldn't see them when he first came, but he can see them now.

Chapter 11: The Sorting Hat 's New Song [ ]

The group arrives at the school , but not before Harry wonders about the winged horses, as well as Hagrid's whereabouts. Ron gets into an argument with Luna over Hagrid's disappearance. At the Start-of-Term Feast , the Sorting Hat gives a warning in its new song. After their meal, the students are surprised to hear that Dolores Umbridge , Senior Undersecretary to the Minister (who had been present at Harry's hearing) is the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher (besides the announcement that Grubbly-Plank is once again taking over Hagrid's teaching duties). Umbridge rudely interrupts Dumbledore's start-of-term notices and gives a speech which easily dulls the audience and Hermione realises through the hidden messages within the speech that the Ministry intends to meddle at Hogwarts. After the feast, Harry goes to Gryffindor Tower with Neville (who knew the new password) and when he goes to his dormitory, learns that not everyone believes that Voldemort is back. He argues with Seamus Finnigan and insults Seamus's mother for believing in the Daily Prophet , before Ron arrives and breaks it up. Afterwards, Dean Thomas reveals his mother doesn't get the Prophet since she's a Muggle, while Neville reveals that he and his grandmother cancelled their subscription since they support Harry and Dumbledore. Before going to sleep, Harry wonders how many fights he will have to have before people realise that Voldemort is truly back.

Chapter 12: Professor Umbridge [ ]

The next morning the trio meet in the common room and, after taking down one of Fred and George's advertising posters, Hermione learns of the argument with Seamus and reveals that she was having the same problem with Lavender Brown about whether Harry was telling the truth about Voldemort's return. That morning at breakfast, Harry learns from Angelina Johnson that she has replaced Oliver Wood as the captain for their Quidditch team and will be holding tryouts on Friday to recruit a new player to fill Oliver's old position as Keeper. Harry reveals that he has cancelled his subscription to the Daily Prophet out of disgust. The trio then meet with Fred and George and Hermione insists they cannot advertise to test their joke products on students. The twins bring up the fact that this year is important for the three of them since they will be taking their O.W.L.s. When the twins reveal they weren't sure if they wanted to attend their seventh year for their N.E.W.T.s, George almost lets it slip on why they don't need to take them, though they and Harry cover this up as the twins leave.

Ron then remembers that besides their O.W.L.s, they will also have Career Advice sessions to help determine what classes they'll need to take next year for their N.E.W.T.s on what career they'll pursue. After going through most of their classes and getting a lot of homework, as well as Harry briefly meeting up with Cho Chang , they head to their first Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson. There they discover that Umbridge refuses to teach real defence methods and that they will not be performing any spells, only learning Ministry-approved theory (learning in a "risk-free way"). When various students start raising questions regarding this, Umbridge immediately contradicts them and also criticises the teachings of their previous two teachers, including identifying Lupin as a "dangerous half-breed".

Harry disagrees with Umbridge about Voldemort, costing Gryffindor house points and getting him a detention. Harry then has an outburst after she rebuts his attempts to convince her that this is not a lie and sends Harry to McGonagall's office with a note. Upon learning what happened, McGonagall urges Harry to keep his temper under control because he could end up in even worse trouble due to Umbridge's position. McGonagall then reveals the note Umbridge sent to her states that Umbridge has assigned him detention for a week.

Chapter 13: Detention with Dolores [ ]

Word quickly spreads amongst the students about Harry's behaviour in Umbridge's class that night at dinner, creating more snide remarks. After they leave the Great Hall, Hermione explains to an irritated Harry that despite Dumbledore's speech at the end of the last school term about Voldemort's return, the Ministry's interference over the last two months prevented the truth from sinking in. When they return to their common room, the trio talk about Umbridge and her class. Hermione points out Umbridge was obviously sent by Fudge as a spy. When the other students return from dinner, Hermione catches Fred and George once again testing their joke products on first year students. Though Fred and George mean no harm, as they tested their products on themselves first, Hermione threatens to write to their mother if they continue to test them on first years. Hermione then goes to bed and also mentions the woolly hats she brought are for the house-elves, confirming she is still doing her S.P.E.W. work.

The next day, teachers brief their fifth year students about their upcoming Ordinary Wizarding Level exams and give them a lot of homework. Hagrid is still missing, and his class is taken over by Professor Grubbly-Plank . During Care of Magical Creatures, Harry has difficulty keeping his temper under control when he hears Draco Malfoy make some rude comments about Hagrid, including that it is likely that Hagrid will be sacked even if he did return to Hogwarts based on what his father told him. Once he returns to Hogwarts Castle, Angelina Johnson mentions to Harry that she is unhappy that Harry's detention on Friday will prevent from attending the tryouts for their Quidditch team, as she wanted the whole team to be there.

Due to Harry's telling the truth about Lord Voldemort's return in Professor Umbridge's first Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson, she gives him detention every day for a week. Umbridge refuses Harry's suggestion to modify the punishment so he could attend Quidditch tryouts on Friday, believing it is the most effective punishment to make him miss out on something he likes. She makes him write out "I must not tell lies" many times in his own blood , though Harry makes sure to keep his temper under control to avoid another outburst in front of Umbridge. With Umbridge's detentions and his busy schedule, Harry has difficulty with keeping up on his homework. Ron is busy with something, causing him to also fall behind in his homework. He later mentions to Harry that he wants to try out for the Quidditch team now that he has a decent broom. Ron becomes concerned when he learns about Harry's detentions, but Harry refuses to go to McGonagall or Dumbledore, knowing there is nothing they can do.

After Harry's final detention on Friday, he learns that Ron was chosen as their team's new Keeper. Angelina Johnson also apologises for the cold way she criticised Harry earlier, due to the pressure of having to lead their Quidditch team. He then meets with Hermione who is exhausted after making more hats for the house-elves. When Harry mentions his scar recently hurting again, he refuses her advice to see Dumbledore. Harry decides to immediately write to Sirius, but Hermione talks him out of it by pointing out the chances his letter could be intercepted.

Sirius appears in Gryffindor's fireplace

On Saturday morning, despite Hermione's warning, Harry decides to write a letter to Sirius . Harry writes about his detention and asks about Hagrid's whereabouts, though he carefully codes the words and phrases in case the letter is intercepted. After sending Hedwig with the letter, Harry notices the same mysterious winged horses he saw before outside. Cho Chang arrives and praises Harry for standing up to Umbridge in her class, before Argus Filch arrives. He claims that he heard from a source that Harry was sending an order for Dungbombs , but Harry states that he already sent his letter, which Cho confirms. After Harry arrives at breakfast, Hermione reads through the Daily Prophet . She discovers that the Ministry has received a tip that Sirius Black is hiding in London. Harry worries that Lucius Malfoy may be the source, as he may have recognised Sirius in his Animagus form at King's Cross Station .

Harry also notices an article saying that Sturgis Podmore , secretly a member of the Order of the Phoenix, has been arrested for breaking into a top secret room at the Ministry. This causes some concern, as Harry recalls that Podmore did not show up for guard duty on the day they left for Platform Nine and Three-Quarters . Harry then helps Ron practise before their actual Quidditch training session begins. During the training session, Draco and his gang are there to insult the members of the Gryffindor team, and a nervous Ron isn't able to play at his best. When an accident Ron caused injures Katie Bell 's nose, which Fred unintentionally makes worse, Katie has to be taken to the Hospital Wing . The remainder of the training session is then called off. After he and Harry spend the next day trying to catch up on homework, on Sunday evening, Ron receives a letter from Percy .

His brother congratulates him on becoming a prefect and urges him to stop associating with Harry, who he feels is a bad influence, as well as believing that his family would one day realise their mistake for believing Dumbledore and apologise to him. He also mentions an important article is being released in the Daily Prophet tomorrow. Ron finds the letter extremely offensive, tears it up and throws it into the fire. After reading the letter, Harry thought he had never felt more like his godfather Sirius Black, whom the wizarding world at large still considered a mass murderer. Hermione then agrees to help Harry and Ron catch up on their homework. After midnight, they and Crookshanks are the only ones left in the Common Room. Sirius contacts them through the Floo Network , as he wishes to respond to Harry's letter this way in case his response was intercepted and the code was broken. After talking about Harry's scar, Sirius mentions that while Umbridge is no Death Eater, she possesses a strong racial hatred for half-breeds . Sirius reveals she is the reason why Lupin cannot find a job due to anti-werewolf legislation she proposed in the Ministry.

Once the trio mentions Umbridge's classes only allow defensive theory and textbook reading, Sirius explains based on their information, Fudge does not want them trained in combat. Fudge believes Dumbledore intends to use the Defence Against the Dark Arts class to raise the students as an army to take on the Ministry, and wants to prevent this possibility with the new curriculum. Sirius knows that with Fudge's growing paranoia, it is only a matter of time before he finds an excuse to arrest Dumbledore. Sirius then asks Harry not to worry about Hagrid. Sirius reveals while Olympe Maxime mentioned in her message they got separated on the way home, he knows Hagrid's tough and asks Harry not to raise too many questions about Hagrid, or they will attract the Ministry's attention. When Sirius suggests about meeting them in disguise at their next Hogsmeade trip, Harry advises him not to, given the Daily Prophet article and that Draco might recognise him if Sirius were to show up. Sirius then leaves, but mentions he will send a letter when he feels it is safe to communicate by the Floo Network again.

The Hogwarts High Inquisitor

Chapter 15: The Hogwarts High Inquisitor [ ]

It becomes clear Umbridge is really there to spy on and take control of the school, and is soon appointed High Inquisitor , arbitrarily imposing rules and regulations (known as " Educational Decrees "). She also harbours racial hatred for "half-breeds", such as centaurs , werewolves , merpeople and similar creatures. Umbridge starts to observe the professors in class, where she apparently intends to evaluate all teachers.

During lunch, Fred , George , and Lee Jordan discuss Ordinary Wizarding Level grades with Hermione and how Flitwick treated Umbridge like a guest while she inspected their class . In Divination , Harry finds Umbridge inspecting Trelawney , who is nervous while being done so. Umbridge demands that Trelawney make a prediction and is unimpressed with the result. In Defence Against the Dark Arts , Umbridge claims Quirinus Quirrell would've been the only D.A.D.A. teacher to pass a Ministry inspection, which Harry retorts saying that Quirrell had Voldemort on the back of his head, resulting in Umbridge giving him another week's worth of detentions.

Angelina Johnson berates Harry for earning himself another week of detentions and Minerva McGonagall penalises Harry five house points for not heeding her warning about Umbridge. Later, in Transfiguration , McGonagall ignores Umbridge throughout the class' inspection and expresses her obvious disdain toward her when being questioned. Umbridge, however, is delighted and impressed with Wilhelmina Grubbly-Plank 's teaching of Care of Magical Creatures . Harry loses his temper when Draco Malfoy mentions being injured by a Hippogriff during Rubeus Hagrid 's class, earning himself another night of detention with Umbridge.

After Harry's final detention, Hermione convinces Harry to secretly teach students Defence Against the Dark Arts based on all his past accomplishments , including escaping Voldemort. Though at first reluctant, Harry finally considers the proposition.

Chapter 17: Educational Decree Number Twenty-Four [ ]

After hearing about the defensive magic organisation, Dolores Umbridge uses her power as Hogwarts High Inquisitor to pass the Educational Decree, which immediately disbands all existing clubs, teams, societies and groups and forbids further groups (defined as 'the regular meeting of three or more students') without the High Inquisitor's consent. Any student found to be in noncompliance of the Decree is to be expelled immediately. Harry worries that someone from the Hog's Head group might have betrayed them, but Hermione informs him that she enchanted the parchment they all signed to inform her if someone did . Harry also learns from Angelina that the Quidditch teams have also been disbanded under the new decree (although Umbridge unsurprisingly immediately gives the Slytherin team permission to reform) and asks Harry to promise her not to provoke Umbridge again out of fear she might not reinstate the Gryffindor team.

During History of Magic , Hedwig turns up and appears injured while delivering a letter from Sirius . Harry leaves the class to have Grubbly-Plank tend to her while Professor McGonagall warns Harry that the Floo Network and Owl Postal Service are being closely monitored at Hogwarts. Before Potions , Draco Malfoy makes fun of people who go to St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries , which leads to Neville Longbottom trying to attack him, but is held back by Harry and Ron. During the class, Umbridge inspects Snape, which Harry becomes so interested in watching, that he gets extra homework on writing an essay on Strengthening Solution after messing up his potion. In Divination , Harry learns that Trelawney has been put on probation , based on her temperamental mood after getting the results of her inspection from Umbridge.

That night, in the Gryffindor common room , the trio chat with Sirius through the Floo Network, who finds out about the defence organisation, agrees it's an excellent idea, and encourages them to continue on with it. Their reunion is cut off when Sirius disappears from the fire and Umbridge's hand appears in the flames, groping to catch hold of Sirius.

The trio goes to visit Hagrid in his cabin . They are shocked to find Hagrid dishevelled and badly injured, regularly applying a piece of dragon meat over some of his wounds to alleviate his pain. Hagrid, however, gives evasive answers when they ask what happened to him. When Ron asks if his injuries are related to giants , Hagrid explains he was in an expedition with Olympe Maxime to the last giant colony in the world, located in an isolated location in Eastern Europe, where they tried to recruit the powerful giants to Dumbledore's side.

Hagrid recounts that, although they were initially successful, managing to impress Karkus , the giant Gurg (leader of the tribe), luck suddenly turned against them when Karkus was murdered by another giant, Golgomath , who became the new Gurg and was allied with Death Eaters . Hagrid and Maxime then almost managed to recruit some dissident giants exiled from Golgomath's rule in nearby caves, but this group was attacked as well, so they had to finally give up, thus their mission to convince the giants to help the Order was ultimately unsuccessful.

When Hagrid mentions that they will be studying an interesting creature in Care of Magical Creatures without naming it, the trio tries to discourage him from bringing dangerous creatures to his classes, fearing that Umbridge will sack him, but Hagrid guarantees that the creature they are going to see is harmless.

Chapter 27: The Centaur and the Sneak [ ]

Harry and his friends have their first Divination class with Firenze, whose teaching methods are based on centaur wisdom and therefore very different from Trelawney's. For example, centaurs believe that Astrology may predict events that are significant to mankind, but not trivial events of human lives. The room in which Firenze gives his class was bewitched to resemble his natural habitat in the Forbidden Forest . When asked why he does not teach in the Forest itself, Firenze explains that he was banned from his colony because he agreed to teach at Hogwarts, which the centaurs consider treason because they do not wish to share their wisdom with humans.

During another D.A. meeting where Harry is teaching the Patronus Charm , a desperate Dobby tells Harry that Umbridge has found out about the group. Harry immediately calls the meeting off and most members manage to escape, but he gets caught by Draco and turned over to Umbridge. Umbridge takes Harry with her to the Headmaster's office , where Dumbledore and McGonagall are with Fudge, who is accompanied by Aurors John Dawlish and Kingsley Shacklebolt , and Percy Weasley . Harry learns that the group was betrayed by Marietta Edgecombe , a friend of Cho Chang , but that the only information she gave so far was that a meeting was taking place at the Room of Requirement . However, Umbridge is unable to get more information from her because, due to a jinx , Marietta's face is covered in pimples forming the world "SNEAK", so she is too ashamed to speak, and her covering her face with her hands muffles her voice. Umbridge suggests that Marietta communicate only by nodding, but before she can begin, Kingsley (who is secretly loyal to Dumbledore and not to the Ministry) discreetly puts a charm on Marietta that prevents her from further incriminating the D.A. However, Umbridge produces the parchment containing the names of all involved students under the name "Dumbledore's Army". Dumbledore takes the blame on himself and claims that he was the one behind the group, citing its name as evidence, and that he planned to train students as his soldiers, to Umbridge's and Fudge's surprise. Dumbledore explaining the Prophecy to Harry

In Dumbledore's office, Harry is furious at Dumbledore for his apparent insensitivity to Sirius's death. Later, Dumbledore apologises to Harry for withholding information over the past year and explains everything else to him: Why he was distant with him, why he arranged Occlumency with Snape and that he was trying to keep Sirius alive with him shut up inside his house. He also explains that when Harry spoke to Kreacher in the fire, Kreacher lied to him and that Sirius was upstairs tending to Buckbeak whom Kreacher had injured after being encouraged to do so by Narcissa Malfoy and Bellatrix Lestrange.

He reveals the lost prophecy, for it was to him that it was first told:

The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches ... born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies ... and the Dark Lord will mark him as equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not ... and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives ... the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies ...

Dumbledore also reveals that, due to when the boy was predicted to be born, Neville Longbottom could also have been the child in the prophecy. Dumbledore believes Voldemort chose to attack Harry because he is a half-blood like himself; Neville is a pureblood. In doing so, the Dark Lord marked Harry as his equal; therefore, there is no doubt that the prophecy relates to anyone but Harry. Dumbledore also reveals to Harry that he never chose him as a prefect because Dumbledore thought that Harry "had enough responsibility to be going on with."

Mad-Eye Moody, Tonks and Lupin waiting for Harry at King's Cross

Chapter 38: The Second War Begins [ ]

Ron and Hermione recover from their injuries after the battle at the Ministry. Fudge publicly admits Voldemort's return while Harry's interview with Rita Skeeter is reprinted in the Daily Prophet . McGonagall makes a full recovery and returns from St Mungo's. After briefly visiting Hagrid, Harry sits by the edge of the lake and mourns for Sirius.

The day before term ends, Umbridge is removed from Hogwarts. While packing, Harry sees the two-way mirror that Sirius gave him, and tries to call his godfather, but he sees nothing. Then suddenly he has the idea to talk to Nearly Headless Nick , and ask him if Sirius could come back as a ghost . Nick says that Sirius is not the kind of wizard who would do that, which leaves Harry disappointed and sad. Running into Luna Lovegood , and remembering she can see Thestrals , Harry asks her if she had known anyone that died. Luna mentions her mother had died when she was nine and mentions that Harry had heard voices behind the Veil at the Ministry, and reassures him that the closest people they lose haven't truly left them for good. This cheers Harry up a bit.

After boarding the Hogwarts Express, Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle attempted to ambush him, but members of Dumbledore's Army intervene using jinxes until Malfoy, Crabbe and Goyle resemble nothing more than slugs forced into Hogwarts robes. Harry learns from Hermione that Cho Chang is now dating Michael Corner after Ginny had ditched him due to Michael being upset that Gryffindor had beat Ravenclaw and went to comfort Cho. Ginny explains she's now going out with Dean Thomas .

Later, at King's Cross Station , Harry is surprised to find that Mad-Eye Moody , Tonks and Lupin are there to greet him and to ask the Dursleys to treat him better this summer. Ron and Hermione say goodbye to Harry with the promise that they will meet very soon.

Behind the scenes [ ]

  • In Chapter 1, Harry hears about a high profile celebrity divorce. Based on timing it may be the divorce of Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson, who divorced in 1995 after Branagh cheated on Thompson with Helena Bonham Carter. All three appear in the film series as Gilderoy Lockhart, Sybil Trelawney, and Bellatrix Lestrange, respectively.
  • The phone number to get into the Ministry of Magic is 62442, which can be used to spell "magic" on a telephone keypad.
  • When the group of students arrive at the Hog's Head for the first D.A. meeting, Fred and George Weasley arrive last, but then Fred jumps to the front of the group to reach the barman first.
  • When Umbridge is inspecting Snape and Harry's potion is ruined, Snape gives him a zero and an essay to write on what he did wrong. Harry then says that he has Quidditch practice; but just that morning, Educational Decree Number Twenty-Four had been enforced and the Gryffindor Quidditch team had not been approved yet, although he hadn't realised that Quidditch teams were included in the Decree too.
  • It is the first book in the series to be released while the movies were being produced.
  • This is the biggest book in the series, being over 700 pages in the UK edition and over 800 pages in the US edition.

dek

What happens in the book: Before his fifth year at Hogwarts, Harry gets an official letter stating that he is expelled for performing magic outside the school. He is ordered to appear at a hearing at the Ministry of Magic. Pleading self-defense, Harry is cleared of the charges against him. The Ministry of Magic refuses to acknowledge that Voldemort has returned.

Meanwhile, a secret society, the Order of the Phoenix, has been formed to combat Voldemort, who is rumored to be rebuilding his army of Death Eaters. At Hogwarts, Dolores Umbridge is appointed the new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, but she is also spying on the school for the Ministry. Because they are not learning anything under Umbridge's tutelage, Harry, Hermione and Ron form a student group, Dumbledore's Army, to prepare for the return of Voldemort.

Haunted by strange visions, Harry discovers that he and Voldemort can read each other's thoughts. Professor Snape gives Harry lessons in Occlumency to block Voldemort's intrusion into his mind, but because of their mutual disdain, Harry learns little.

Harry has a vision that Sirius is in danger and heads to the Department of Mysteries, but it turns out to be a trap set by Voldemort. The Dark Lord is looking for a prophecy in a glass sphere that only Harry can retrieve. Dumbledore's Army fights the Death Eaters until the Order of the Phoenix arrives. Sirius dies at the hands of his cousin, Bellatrix; the Death Eaters are captured; and Voldemort disappears after dueling with Dumbledore.

The Ministry finally admits that Voldemort has returned. Dumbledore reveals the chilling prophecy: Harry must kill Voldemort or be murdered by him. Harry returns to the Dursleys, depressed by the loss of his godfather Sirius.

Deeper secrets

Harry Potter is frustrated. Isolated from the wizarding world at his summer residence with his non-magical aunt, uncle and cousin, he hides in flowerbeds so he can listen to the evening news and steals newspapers from trash bins, hoping for some sign of activity from Lord Voldemort. He barely has had contact with his best friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger.

A dementor attack, a cryptic Howler, and a rescue brigade bring Harry back to the magical world, to a place where a group of wizards has assembled with the mission to stop Voldemort. To Harry's disgust, no one wants to tell him anything regarding the mission, not even when he begins to dream of a snake and a door at the end of a long, dark hallway that he recognizes as part of the Ministry of Magic. Things aren't much better at Hogwarts, where his dreams turn into visions of Voldemort's power, anger, and desire for domination.

Darker powers

Daily Prophet , and the only people who believe him are the ones the Ministry would discredit. According to the Ministry, Albus Dumbledore is a dangerous fool, and anyone who follows him is not to be trusted. Co-workers, friends, and even families begin to divide according to whom they support. Spies and secrets feed a new era in wizarding history and lead to changes at Hogwarts, not all of them good. The students are as divided as the adults, and discord haunts the corridors.

Stronger magic

Fifth year is the time for Ordinary Wizarding Level exams, or O.W.L.s, and Harry and the rest of the fifth-years find themselves working harder than ever to achieve top test results, which then dictate their careers. Spells are more complex, there's more homework, and the students have to work twice as hard as they did in previous years just to keep up. The only class that differs from this pattern is Defense Against the Dark Arts, taught by the deceptively sweet Dolores Umbridge, formerly Senior Undersecretary to Cornelius Fudge, the Minister of Magic. Umbridge's lesson plans leave Harry and his friends worried and wanting more from their education.

Harry is also asked by Professor Dumbledore to study privately with Professor Snape, the hook-nosed, greasy-haired Potions professor who has done nothing but make Harry's Potions classes miserable since the day Harry first came to Hogwarts. In order to succeed and even survive, Harry must put his trust in those who hide the truth from him.

Intricate plots, maturing characters, and fast-paced action paint a picture of a magical world with a new veil of darkness. As Harry and his friends grow, they must face more adult issues and deal not only with a changing world, but also with their changing selves. Characters who have only served in the background of previous books become more important, and some of Harry's favorite people, like Remus Lupin, return. Never content to sit back and watch things happen, Harry and his friends take dangerous matters into their own hands, confronting evil and working as a team to stop it.

From page one, where we see more complex sentences and an angrier, damaged Harry, this book's tone is completely different from the previous four: deeper and richer, with less humor and more detail. Rowling's tactics of inspiring fear are different in this installation, too. The horror is psychological rather than physical, and there is less Quidditch and more magic. Harry is achingly perfect and emotionally real as a typical teenage boy, confused and defiant about everything from girls to his friendships to his magical education. He has come to trust very few people, but those he takes into his confidence, like Ron and Hermione, complement him very well.

Patience is recommended while reading, because the pacing lags in some places while rushing in others, and the multiple plot lines take a while to mesh. Rather than take us through a mostly linear tale with a twist at the end, as seen in THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS and THE GOBLET OF FIRE, the plotline here is built of many small incidents that come together to form the whole of the story. This new approach shows a shift in the atmosphere and targeted audience of the Harry Potter series. As Harry matures, so does Rowling's writing style, coloring the events of the past and linking them to the present. HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX gives many answers and raises even more questions, setting up an excellent path for the final two books in the series.

The main Harry Potter books in order

1. harry potter and the sorcerer’s stone.

summary of book 5 harry potter

In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone , the book that started it all (understatement of the century), Harry Potter discovers his true identity in the wee hours of his eleventh birthday: he is a wizard, famous in the magical world for having vanquished the evil Lord Voldemort when he was only a baby. This revelation, delivered by a gruff, hairy giant named Hagrid, sets Harry on a fantastical (if also often frightening) journey of a lifetime.

He meets bosom buddies Ron and Hermione aboard the Hogwarts Express, and is soon sorted with them into Gryffindor: the house of the intrepid and brave. However, Harry also makes plenty of enemies at Hogwarts, most notably the arrogant Draco Malfoy and the nasty potions master, Snape (both affiliated with Slytherin house). And from battling a troll on Halloween to his first exhilarating Quidditch match — not to mention the novel’s climax , in which Harry goes up against Voldemort for the second time in his young life — there’s never a dull moment in the first year of his new adventure.

Sorcerer’s Stone (or Philosopher’s Stone , as it’s titled outside of the US) also perfectly balances exciting action with touching emotion, as Harry finds a true family in Ron and Hermione after years of misery with the Dursleys. Indeed, the book’s small, moving moments — such as Harry being floored by a gift from Ron’s mother, or Hermione’s tearful declaration at the end about “books and cleverness” — are just as magical as the spells themselves.

2. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

summary of book 5 harry potter

In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets , Harry and friends return to Hogwarts with a bang — the bang of a flying Ford Anglia as it crashes into the Whomping Willow, that is. After being spotted by Muggles and narrowly avoiding expulsion, you’d think that the rest of Harry’s second year would be smooth sailing in comparison… right?

Wrong. When the school caretaker’s cat is found petrified (essentially paralyzed and comatose, but technically still alive) along with a bone-chilling message that “the Chamber of Secrets has been opened,” fear and suspicions start to arise — and of course, only worsen when students start getting petrified too. Nobody can figure out who the culprit is, only that he refers to himself as “the Heir” and seems to be on the warpath.

But as our young heroes know well by now, if you want a mystery solved right, you have to do it yourself. Which they do — through a combination of Polyjuice potion brewing, mysterious flashbacks provided by a sentient journal, and a truly horrific excursion to see a giant spider called Aragog. The book culminates in a visit to the titular chamber, which lies underneath Hogwarts and contains yet another deadly threat that Harry must face.

But of course, this being an early Potter book, it’s not all din and danger. Comic relief comes in the form of moronic, egocentric professor Gilderoy Lockhart, and toilet ghost Moaning Myrtle — who, in true Rowling fashion, ends up being key to the central plot twist of the story.

3. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

summary of book 5 harry potter

The third book in the series introduces Sirius Black, a deranged mass murderer who’s just escaped from the wizard prison of Azkaban. As a result, swarms of Dementors — dark, faceless beings that “suck the soul” out of their victims and serve as the guards of Azkaban — infiltrate Hogwarts to patrol for Black, who’s supposedly after Harry next. To make matters worse, our normally steadfast hero has a bad reaction to the Dementors, which cause him to faint on a train and even lose a critical Quidditch match.

Again, though, it’s not all doom and gloom. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban also features Professor Remus Lupin, the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher and a school friend of Harry’s late father. Lupin and Harry quickly forge a father-son-like relationship themselves, and Lupin teaches Harry the Patronus Charm (powered by one’s happiest memories) to protect himself from Dementors.

Meanwhile, Ron and Hermione are squabbling even more than usual over their respective pets, Crookshanks the cat and Scabbers the rat. But what seems like a lighthearted subplot turns out to be a major factor in one of the biggest twists of the series , revealed in the last few chapters… and which naturally involves Black and Lupin as well. Oh, and hippogriffs and time traveling, in case that wasn’t enough to sell you on it.

Besides the sheer brilliance of plotting in this book, Rowling also presents some interesting commentary with the Dementors, which symbolize depression and force Harry to grapple with his past trauma. Indeed, though Goblet of Fire is widely identified as the “transition point” into the darker themes of the series’ latter half, Prisoner of Azkaban is definitely where those themes begin to take root.

4. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

summary of book 5 harry potter

There’s quite a bit to unpack in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire , so we’ll dive right in: after attending an eventful Quidditch World Cup with Hermione and the Weasley family, Harry returns to Hogwarts for his fourth year of school. It’s bound to be an exciting one, as Hogwarts is hosting the Triwizard Tournament, in which students from three major wizarding academies will compete. However, only students aged seventeen or older are eligible for the competition, which means Harry is safe for once… or so he thinks, until the ceremonial Goblet of Fire selects him as the fourth Triwizard Champion for no discernible reason.

What follows is a nonstop sequence of thrills, landmarked by the challenges of the tournament — in which the contestants must tackle menacing dragons, malevolent mermaids , and a maze full of potentially fatal tricks and traps. But even between the challenges themselves is plenty of riveting drama, especially with Rita Skeeter (a slimy reporter trying defame Harry and friends), Mad-Eye Moody (the kids’ new D.A.D.A. teacher), and Hermione’s most recent social justice cause (rights for house elves, naturally). And as anyone who’s read it will know, the GoF finale is unprecedented in terms of dark, difficult material, signaling a definitive shift for the series in a more mature direction.

Indeed, for all those wondering whether Rowling could change gears from the relatively lighthearted adventures of the previous three books into a darker and even more elaborate fantasy-thriller, this book proved her undeniably capable. But once again, GoF is not devoid of laughs and simple charm. The Yule Ball is a hilarious glimpse into the all-too-familiar teenage angst of dating and school dances, and the subplot with Ron being jealous of Harry’s constant spotlight is particularly well done. Yes, even in all the grandeur, Rowling never loses sight of what’s true to life — Goblet of Fire demonstrates this most aptly.

5. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

summary of book 5 harry potter

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix gets political in big way: despite Voldemort’s revival at the end of GoF , the Ministry of Magic continues to deny all rumors and refuse to take action, worried that they’ll upset the public. This means the real adults have to take a leaf out of Harry, Ron, and Hermione’s book and start fighting him themselves, through an underground vigilante group called the Order of the Phoenix.

But the Order can’t do much about Dolores Umbridge, the newly instated and highly sadistic Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts, who perpetuates the Ministry’s lies about Voldemort. When Harry openly defies her in class, she retaliates by giving him chronic detention — during which he must write lines with a “blood quill” that carves the words into the back of his hand. Despite this torment, he and the rest of the class do not acquiesce to Umbridge, and establish a secret defense organization for themselves called “Dumbledore’s Army.”

On top of all that, Harry keeps having frequent, harrowing visions of Voldemort when he’s asleep, and must take Occlumency lessons with Professor Snape to prevent them. This is a different kind of torture, with Snape forcing entry into Harry’s private memories at every lesson and relishing the opportunity to cause him pain. Of course, Snape’s own twisted motivations are revealed when Harry gains access to his memories — one of which is a bitter altercation with Harry’s father.

Even the most diehard HP fan will admit that Order of the Phoenix is a hard one to get through. From watching Harry suffer in such a myriad of ways, to that devastating climax in which he loses one of the few people he’s come to love and trust, OotP is no walk in the park. Yet it’s this strife and despair that makes it such an authentic, powerful narrative — and, trite as it sounds, Harry’s pain ultimately makes him stronger and more determined to defeat Voldemort than ever.

6. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

summary of book 5 harry potter

Things take a turn for the expository in this penultimate installment, which sees Harry learn all about Voldemort’s family and “origin story,” so to speak. Dumbledore gives Harry these lessons to prepare him for a grand future battle with Voldemort, presumably in the vein of keeping his enemies closer. What Harry doesn’t know is that Dumbledore is planning something even bigger — a plan that he, Harry, becomes more inexorably entangled in with each passing day.

At the same time, Harry suspects Malfoy (always a nefarious character) to be colluding with Voldemort, and begins obsessively tracking him on the Marauder’s Map. But each new lead just seems to be a wrong turn, and Harry grows increasingly frustrated with the lack of evidence when he knows that Malfoy is guilty. His only good luck, funnily enough, is in potions class. After receiving a secondhand textbook filled with tips and tricks from the mysterious “Half-Blood Prince,” Harry shines under the tutelage of their new potions professor Slughorn. Hermione, meanwhile, is jealous of Harry’s newfound academic success, and attempts to uncover the Prince’s identity to prove he’s crooked.

Speaking of petty drama, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince also gives the fun, silly sixteen-year-old stuff its due. Ron and Hermione’s chemistry amps up to eleven, with constant bickering over their respective romances. (Ron memorably snogs Lavender Brown with such gusto that it “looks like he’s eating her face.”) Meanwhile Harry’s falling for Ginny, Ron’s sister, and battling his inner demons about whether to ask her out. All this falls to the wayside after yet another epic finale, but it’s another nice reminder of how human and relatable the characters are .

7. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

summary of book 5 harry potter

To be fair, the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows aren’t as quotidianly miserable as the events of OotP — at least we know the characters are suffering for a greater purpose. But that doesn’t stop this from being, as you might expect, the darkest book in the series. From the corrupting influence of a locket that causes Ron to abandon his friends, to the tragic prophecy that Harry uncovers through more of Snape’s past memories, this book truly tests the reader’s tolerance for beloved characters in distress. (Don’t even get us started on the Battle of Hogwarts bloodbath .)

But Deathly Hallows is also a masterpiece, wrapping up thousands of pages’ worth of deeply intricate story plotting, character development, and booming thematic resonance in a satisfying manner. Indeed, J.K. Rowling has said she wrote the last pages of Deathly Hallows before Sorcerer’s Stone was even completed — evidence of just how carefully the series was planned.

8. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

summary of book 5 harry potter

While not part of the original seven-book series, Cursed Child and the accompanying stage play have become a generally accepted addition to the Harry Potter canon. This 336-page text picks up where the Deathly Hallows epilogue left off, with Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Malfoy sending their unfortunately named kids off to Hogwarts — Harry’s son Albus and Malfoy’s son Scorpius serve as our protagonists this time around. Upon arrival at Hogwarts, the boys are both sorted into Slytherin and forge an unlikely friendship, which naturally causes tension between Albus and Harry over the next few years.

After a fight with his father, Albus overhears Cedric Diggory’s father Amos asking Harry to use a more powerful version of a Time Turner (which features prominently in PoA ) to go back in time and rescue his son. When Harry refuses, Albus enlists Scorpius to help him save Cedric, with the aid of Diggory’s niece Delphi. However, as anyone who’s seen Back to the Future can attest, messing with timelines is never a good idea… especially in the wizarding world. Things are further complicated by the fact that Delphi is not who she says she is, and may have sinister ulterior motives when it comes to rewriting history.

Between the multiple timelines and various versions of the same characters, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child can definitely be a bit confusing at times — and its somewhat far-fetched plot twists and questionable consistency with Rowling’s established world have led some Potter fans to decry it. But at the end of the day, it’s still another piece of the magical puzzle that we’ve all enjoyed putting together so much: this once-in-a-lifetime literary experience that transcends culture and generations.

The “Hogwarts library” texts

Fantastic beasts and where to find them.

Can't get enough of the fantastical creatures that fill Harry Potter 's pages? You're in luck. As detailed by J.K. Rowling (who writes as famed Magizoologist Newt Scamander), Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is the definitive compendium to the magical beasts that roam the wizarding world. You'll find some familiar companions — such as the Hippogriff, the Basilisk, the Hungarian Horntail — but you'll also discover many, many new creatures to befriend. This is the text that inspired the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them movie trilogy, so if you're looking to catch up on the source, this is where to start!

Quidditch Through the Ages

Or maybe it's J.K. Rowling's smash-hit sport, Quidditch, that tickles your fancy. Today, Quidditch is an actual sport played at over 100 colleges in the United States — such is the strength of the grip that it's exerted on our public imagination. But if you're interested in the academic side of Quidditch, Rowling's got you covered with Quidditch Through the Ages , which will tell you all that you ever wanted to know about the history and rules behind Quidditch.

The Tales of Beedle the Bard

The Tales of Beedle the Bard is a collection of five fairy wizarding tales, told by, well, Beedle the Bard! Professor Dumbledore bequeathed these age-old tales to Hermione Granger, and they (particularly "The Tale of Three Brothers") turned out to be instrumental in helping Harry Potter crack the clues given to him in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Now it's your chance to read them for yourself. Though the stories in this book all have a magical twist, the themes at their cores still resonate with what we associate with fairy tales: friendship, the everlasting strength of love, and the magic that each one of us possesses.

Hogwarts: an incomplete and unreliable guide.

Sourced from the short reads on Pottermore.com and gathered into one book for easy reading, Hogwarts: An Incomplete and Unreliable Guide gives you all of the background information that you might want to know about Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardly. Ever been curious about what the Hufflepuff common room looks like (it was never described in the books themselves)? Did you ever wonder about the origins of Platform Nine-and-Three-Quarters? Here's the book that will provide all of the answers.

Short Stories from Hogwarts of Power, Politics and Pesky Poltergeists

Not everything about Hogwarts and the Wizarding World is bright and shiny — indeed, the series has birthed some of most memorable villains in literature, from Dolores Umbridge to Lord Voldemort himself. Short Stories from Hogwarts of Power, Politics and Pesky Potergeists (also collected from JK Rowling's writings on Pottermore.com) delves deeper into this darker side of Harry's universe: in particular, it'll walk you through the politics of wizards and the backstories of Hogwart's villains, like Profess Umbridge.

Short Stories from Hogwarts of Heroism, Hardship and Dangerous Hobbies

Now let's go to the flip side and read about some of the most heroic figures who stand tall in the Wizarding World! In Short Stories from Hogwarts of Heroisim, Hardship and Dangerous Hobbies , we get the pleasure of revisiting our favorite professors (especially Minerva McGonagall and Remus Lupin) and discovering their backstories.

The Fantastic Beasts screenplays

Unless you've been living under a rock this entire time, you've probably heard of the two new Wizarding World movies that have hit Hollywood in the past few years. Led by actor Eddie Redmayne and an all-star ensemble cast, the Fantastic Beasts films tell the story of Newt Scamander, Albus Dumbledore, and the dark battle against Gellert Grindelward in the blackened days before Lord Voldemort entered the scene.

Of course, you can choose to simply watch the continuation of the Wizarding World on-screen — but reading the screenplays of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: the Original Screenplay and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald — The Original Screenplay  will undoubtedly give you that extra level of depth and insight into the characters.

So what's the recommended reading order (versus the chronological reading order)?

Fortunately, Harry Potter isn't one of those series like Star Wars has a sprawling number of canon novels, film novelizations, reference books, and comics to read. Instead, it's a finite universe — which makes catching up on it much easier. We recommend reading the main series chronologically so that you can see Harry and his friends grow up. Then — if you're still thirsting for more of the Wizarding World — you can see where your interests most strongly lie (whether it's in magizoology or Quidditch, for instance), and start again there.

If you still haven’t read Harry Potter , just know that it’s never too late to start — and even for those who have, you’re never too old to go back and relive the magic. ⚡

A quick summary of the harry potter series.

A Quick Summary Of the Harry Potter Series

In honor of Harry Potter and JK Rowling's (belated) birthday, I thought I'd do a review of the series as a whole.

Harry Potter shapes an entire generation. It has become a household name and nearly everyone knows about the boy wizard and his two best friends, Ron and Hermione. The stories span seven years, coinciding with the seven years a student spends at Hogwarts. Specifically, these book span Harry's seven years at Hogwarts.

The first book begins at the beginning of Harry's life. Harry, at 15 months old, was orphaned and left on his Aunt and Uncle's front door. We learn that Harry is indeed magical, but his new family is not. Fast forward 10 years and Harry is a small, neglected, and shy 11-year-old who lives in the cupboard under the stairs. He is told repeatedly that he is not worthy of the Dursley's (his aunt, uncle, and rotund cousin) love. Suddenly, letters begin arriving for Harry. Despite the Dursley's best attempts, he learns of Hogwarts, the magical school in the UK, and decides to attend. Harry has many adventures at his new school, meeting friend (Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley) and foe (Draco Malfoy and Professor Severus Snape) alike. The first book is amazing alone, yes, but it truly serves to set the stage for the rest of Harry's education.

The second book begins at the Dursley's again. Harry is trapped without being able to contact his friends. Ron, however, soon comes to his rescue in a flying car. Harry travels to Ron's house and meets most of his family, three of his older brothers he knew from Hogwarts, his younger sister, and his father. The two go back to Hogwarts and learn the school is under attack, and his professor is unable to stop it. Nearly single-handedly, Harry fights to save the only home he's ever known.

We meet an incredible character in the third book; one of my absolute favorites. Professor Remus John Lupin steps in to take over the Defense Against the Dark Arts classes and quickly earns the students' respect. He is extremely capable in his field and kind to the students. The story traces the path of an escaped prisoner who is (supposedly) hunting Harry down, but in the end, we learn that no one is who they seem to be.

The fourth book begins with Harry's troubling nightmares. He learns of a competition at school that could result in a competitor's death. Despite age restrictions (one must be seventeen to enter the tournament, Harry is fourteen) and his own lack of desire to participate, Harry is forced to compete. People are mysterious around every corner and all motives are questioned- even Harry's own. The book ends with a spellbinding surprise, setting the darker stage for the last few books.

Book five definitely has a more depressed, melancholic mood. The book covers now feature cool colors instead of the bright vibrant colors that we've grown used to. Harry is exiled and ridiculed throughout the school. Very few stand by him, including the clumsy Neville Longbottom, Luna "Loony" Lovegood, Ron, and Hermione. Dumbledore, the headmaster who has always stood by him, will now no longer speak or make eye contact with him. The new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, who is replaced every year, is more than willing to single him out, partially due to her boss leading the smear campaign against Harry. Events in this book bring us hope, such as the formation of the DA (you'll have to read to see!) and the Weasley twins' exit, while others, such as the death at the end, make us realize the true cost of war because yes, the Wizarding World is at war.

The penultimate book details Harry's new life; he grows obsessed with taking down Voldemort and doing anything he can to assist. He also learns to cope with typical teenage hormones because, despite everything that is going on around him, Harry is only sixteen. Harry, now knowing from the fifth book, surrounds himself with his close friends, the ones who remained at his side no matter what. He becomes accustomed to death, as his friends learn of deaths nearly every day. The sixth book shows the world at open war before the end.

The final book begins with Harry's final days at the Dursleys' home, including their final goodbye. Loss begins early in the book, with Harry's beloved pet and trusted guardian both dying within the first couple hundred pages. Within a week, the Magical Government has fallen and Voldemort has taken over. Harry, Ron, and Hermione are now on the run hunting for Horcruxes- magical items that keep Voldemort alive. The only issue with these Horcruxes? They can be anything- a football or a dolphin even. Harry faces death multiple times through the events of the book with the final time culminating in a questionable yet still explosive ending that rocks the Wizarding and Muggle world alike.

Top 10 reasons my school rocks, why i chose a small school over a big university..

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin ." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.

1. My school is incredibly unique.

There are so many different kinds of people that each bring something really special to contribute to the school which makes it so unique.

2. I am not just a number at my school.

I am a student that my professors know about and I like knowing that my professors can watch my progress.

3. I feel like I am contributing something to the community.

I like feeling like I can make a difference on my campus.

4. I really do feel like it is my home away from home.

It isn't just my school. It is absolutely my home away from home. I feel so comfortable there and it was as hard of an adjustment as I had thought it would be.

5. My professors know me and I feel that I can easily communicate with them.

I feel like they will do anything to help students succeed. I can always go to my professors. I like knowing that I have someone looking out for me.

6. The incredible people I've met

The people I have met at my school, even after my first year, have made such a huge impact on me. I know that these are people that I will stay friends with long after college is done.

7. Opportunities

My school offers so many different opportunities to get involved in things around campus. Even writing for the Odyssey was an opportunity offered to me by my school and I decided to challenge myself by writing an article. Turns out, I really enjoy writing. I might not have had this opportunity at a bigger school.

8. Students want to learn

I feel as though I am not just learning inside the classroom at my school. I am learning outside the classroom to from my fellow classmates who want to engage about the things we have learned.

9. Ability to join a sorority and have a house full of people I know I can talk to anytime I need to

I wasn't sure if being in a sorority was something I was interested in but when I met the amazing people in the sorority and how inclusive it was, I knew that it was going to be a good thing for me. The people I've met in my sorority have been so amazing.

10. I have figured out how I learn best because my school offers so many different ways of learning.

Because of the smaller class sizes, there is more flexibility in the way the class is taught. This was helpful because I was able to try out different ways of learning and figure out which way I learn best.

7 New Year Clichés: Break Free, Embrace Change!

Those that everyone know.

It's 2024! You drank champagne, you wore funny glasses, and you watched the ball drop as you sang the night away with your best friends and family . What comes next you may ask? Sadly you will have to return to the real world full of work and school and paying bills. "Ah! But I have my New Year's Resolutions!"- you may say. But most of them are 100% complete cliches that you won't hold on to. Here is a list of those things you hear all around the world.

1. "I will be serious about working out"

Are you? Odds are you will get that gym membership, go for a few weeks, and completely forget about it. You will realize that autopay is taking $80 out of your account and you either need to cancel or start going again. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be in better shape, but do it at a pace that is right for you. Don't let the change in year dictate it.

2. "New year new me!"

This cliche is the most over used and most underdone. Every year we hear "New Year New Me!!", and the most that comes out of it is someone dyes their hair or gets a tattoo . Yes, these are life changing attributes to a person, and everyone should be commended for trying new things, but don't try to change you just because its a new year. Stay true to yourself.

3. "I'm going to be more outgoing!"

Being adventurous is always a great thing! Stepping out of your comfort zone is always exhilarating, but don't force yourself to do things that make you feel uncomfortable. So are you really going to go out, or will you continue to watch Netflix and go to the same restaurants. The choice is yours!

4. "I'm going to get more organized "

Trying to get organized is a great feat few of us can manage. It's always good to do a big spring cleaning, but trying to completely organize everything is trying to change how you live. I know when I try to do something like get a new planner, I either stick to it or I forget about it.

5. "I'm leaving my bad relationships in the past!"

Bad influences won't go away in your life if you wish them to stay in another year. Work hard at this one if you are going to make it one of your New Years cliches. Toxic relationships should stay in the past, but it is up to you to keep them out of your life.

6. "I'm going to party less"

Party as much as you want. There is nothing wrong of going out and having fun as long as you are safe doing it. If partying is what you enjoy doing, then that is okay. Not everyone conforms to that lifestyle, but if that is your thing there is no shame in that! Don't leave it in another year because you think you have to.

7. "I'm going to get more serious about my career/schooling"

This is the cliche that you should stick to. It's never a bad thing to be more focused on your career and school, as long as you don't lose sight of the important things. If you get serious, make sure you make time for your family, friends, and most importantly, yourself.

The Ultimate Birthday: Unveiling the Perfect Day to Celebrate!

Let's be real, the day your birthday falls on could really make or break it..

You heard it here first: birthdays in college are some of the best days of your four years. For one day annually, you get to forget about your identity as a stressed, broke, and overworked student, and take the time to celebrate. You can throw your responsibilities for a day, use your one skip in that class you hate, receive kind cards and gifts from loved ones and just enjoy yourself.

Having just celebrated my birthday this past Thursday, the most common question I received from people all day and night was, “Is your birthday actually today?” I realized that, for many, they have the misfortune of either having a birthday in the summer , or on a day that wasn’t ideal for them to celebrate on.

Your birthday celebration is a special day, and it is important to make the most out of it. I decided to take the initiative and make a definitive list that will show you the best day to have a birthday, in descending order according to their rank:

If your birthday falls on a Monday, it just might be an unlucky year for you. Monday is, hands down, the worst day to have a birthday. Everyone else is focused on how stressful the week ahead of them will be, and are still recovering from the weekend. If you celebrate the weekend before, that’s too far in advance, and celebrating the weekend after feels too far away. It’s a lose/lose, unfortunately.

While not as unlucky as a Monday, a Tuesday is in a similar situation. Most are still feeling down as so much of the week lies ahead, and often, big assignments are due on Wednesday. Of course, a Tequila and TacoTuesday could be an option (for those turning 21 or older, of course), but that’s about the most you can do.

Taking the fifth spot is Sunday. By the time Sunday comes around, everyone’s pretty exhausted. However, it still is a very relaxing day, that would make for a pretty good birthday. You have the entire day to spend how you want, no class, few commitments, if any. Plus, you can always celebrate the night before. Your birthday technically starts at midnight, right?

4. Wednesday

Honestly, the most I can say about this is Wine Wednesday. The week is still young, though. Hopefully you have an easy Thursday and Friday ahead of you, however, if not, the birthday could go south. Either way, it’s definitely right in the middle in terms of the best day of the week to have a birthday on.

3. Thursday

I can speak from personal experience, this is a pretty great day to have a birthday. My 11 a.m. French exam the next morning wasn’t ideal, however, there’s nothing better than a Thirsty Thursday (again, 21 and up only). It gives you the whole weekend ahead of you. However, it’s right at the beginning of the weekend, and not everyone has the ability to celebrate on Thursday, as it is still a weeknight.

2. Saturday

Saturdays are special because a Saturday birthday is an all day affair. You celebrate from first thing in the morning, all the way through the night. You can grab a dinner with friends, the whole day is yours for the taking. The only downside is that it doesn’t lay right in the middle of the weekend, it’s on the last day.

The final consensus is that Friday is, in fact, the best day for your birthday to fall on. Right in the center of the weekend, you can really make anything you want out of your birthday. You’ve claimed the right to an entire weekend, and all of your week’s responsibilities come to a close at the end of your Friday school day. You can even skip that class you hate so much. Those who have a Friday birthday this year: consider yourself blessed.

In the end, a birthday is a birthday. No matter what day yours falls on, you have every right to live it up, and have yourself a day!

Unleash Inspiration: 15 Relatable Disney Lyrics!

Leave it to disney to write lyrics that kids of all ages can relate to..

Disney songs are some of the most relatable and inspiring songs not only because of the lovable characters who sing them, but also because of their well-written song lyrics . While some lyrics make more sense with knowledge of the movie's story line that they were written for, other Disney lyrics are very relatable and inspiring for any listener.

1. "I would go most anywhere to feel like I belong."

Hercules: "I Can Go the Distance"

Anyone can relate to feeling like you don't belong. From being picked last in gym class to not being as popular as another classmate, you probably understand, to some degree, what it's like to feel out of place. You would do anything to find a group of people or an activity where you feel like you belong and have a purpose.

2. "Tranquil as a forest, but on fire within."

Mulan: "I'll Make a Man out of You."

If people consider you to be very mellow, odds are you are just waiting to let it all out, especially if you are short. Never underestimate the power of a shorty.

3. "If you walk the footsteps of a stranger, you'll learn things you never knew you never knew."

Pocahontas: "Colors of the Wind"

The best way to understand other people better is to look at things through their eyes.

4. "I know we're different but deep inside us, we're not that different at all."

Tarzan: "You'll be in my Heart "

I think we all need this line after this last election. No matter who you or your neighbor voted for, remember that we are all humans and we should treat each other with love and respect.

5. "These guys don't appreciate I'm broke."

Aladdin: "One Jump Ahead"

This lyric never resonated with me until I came to college. I need all of these textbooks? What is that $20 fee even for? I'm broke guys.

6. "When will my life begin?"

Tangled: "When will my Life Begin?"

When I was in middle school, I thought I would experience the best time of my life in high school . When I got to high school, I just wanted to get to college to experience life on my own. Now that I am in college, I am still dependent on my parents for almost everything, because I can't afford anything even with a part-time job. I would just like to know when my life, a life where I can support myself, really will begin.

7. "That perfect girl is gone."

Frozen: "Let it Go"

I spent my entire life trying to be the perfect daughter, the perfect student, the perfect Christian and the perfect person. I realize now that perfection does not exist. I can only aim to be the best version of me I can be. I became much more content with myself once I let the perfect version of myself go. That perfect girl is gone.

8. "Barely even friends, then somebody bends unexpectedly."

Beauty and the Beast: "Beauty and the Beast"

Many high school sweethearts know what it's like to have an acquaintance turn into a friend and then into a lover.

9. "I will ride, I will fly. Chase the wind and touch the sky."

Brave "Touch the sky"

A great song to get inspired, keep going, and work hard to achieve your dreams. Everything is possible if you are determined to make it happen.

10. "The men up there don't like a lot of blabber, they think a girl who gossips is a bore."

The Little Mermaid : "Poor Unfortunate Souls"

I had to make at least one of these lyrics sarcastic. Men, I know not all of you fall into this category, but a whole lot of you don't like long, deep conversations and you don't pay very much attention when it's not a subject you're interested in, like sports . Am I right, ladies?

11. "Forget about your worries and your strife."

The Jungle Book: "Bare Necessities"

This lyric is more inspiring than relatable. However, it does serve as a little reminder to stop worrying about things you cannot change.

12."If you keep on believing, the dream that you wish will come true."

Cinderella: "A Dream is a Wish your Heart Makes"

Never give up on your dreams. If a dream is easy to achieve, it is not a dream. It is a goal. If you give up on a dream, it was never a dream in the first place. It was a desire. If you work hard enough toward a dream, you can make it a reality.

13. "Anywhere I go, I'm home, if you are there beside me."

The Lion King 2: "Love Will Find a Way"

This song is probably not as well-known as the others on this list, however, The Lion King 2 is one of my favorite Disney movies. We all have someone in our lives that make even the worst places feel like home whenever he or she is around.

14. "Up on the shore they work all day, out in the sun they slave away."

The Little Mermaid: "Under the Sea"

You got that right, Sebastian.

15. "When you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are, anything your heart desires will come to you."

Pinocchio: "When You Wish upon a Star"

This is probably the most well-known Disney lyric of all time. It was so inspiring and the music was so beautiful that Disney decided to use it at the beginning of all Disney movies. Disney was built on following your dreams. If there is one message that Disney communicates in every single Disney movie from Pinocchio to The Little Mermaid, it is "Follow your dreams."

How Does Mad-Eye Moody's Magical Eye Work in Harry Potter?

Mad-Eye Moody's magical eye is puzzling. How did he get it, and how does it work?

Quick Links

Who is mad-eye moody, how does mad-eye moody's eye work.

It's important to remember the ongoing controversial statements by the creator of the Harry Potter franchise. CBR supports the hard work of industry professionals on properties fans know and love, and the wider world of Harry Potter that fans have adopted as their own. You can find CBR's continuing coverage on Rowling here .

  • Mad-Eye Moody's magical eye granted him unique abilities, like seeing through virtually anything.
  • Mad-Eye Moody tragically dies during the Battle of the Seven Potters due to Mundungus Fletcher's betrayal.
  • After Moody's death, Harry buries his magical eye in the forest where the 1994 Quidditch World Cup was held.

The Harry Potter franchise has no shortage of intriguing and complex characters and magical items. From Albus Dumbledore and his mesmerizing Pensieve to Harry Potter himself and his one-of-a-kind Cloak of Invisibility, magical items are just as important and captivating as the characters themselves. One such magical item that is as puzzling and intriguing as the owner himself is Mad-Eye Moody's magical eye.

Mad-Eye Moody plays a big role in the Harry Potter franchise, first introduced as Harry Potter's Professor of Defense Against the Dark Arts in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire . However, not much is known about his character, and the Harry Potter movie adaptations reduced his role in the saga quite significantly. Yet, every fan will know that one of Mad-Eye Moody's most defining characteristics was his magical eye, which gave him better sight than any normal eye could, thanks to its magical abilities. But who exactly is Mad-Eye Moody, and how does Mad-Eye Moody's eye work?

  • In the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire movie adaptation, Mad-Eye Moody credits Evan Rosier with the loss of his eye. In the book, however, Moody says Rosier only took a piece of his nose during a fight that ended in Rosier's death.
  • Igor Karkaroff stood trial for his role as a Death Eater. He was sent to Azkaban but later set free after his testimony helped capture other unknown Death Eaters.

How Do Wands Work in Harry Potter?

Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody could be considered a celebrity among the magical community, as he was one of the most famous Aurors of all time. Mad-Eye Moody was one of the most important members of the Order of the Phoenix, both in the first and second Wizarding Wars. He was responsible for fighting and capturing several Death Eaters , including Evan Rosier and Igor Karkaroff, who later became the Headmaster of Durmstrang Institute.

Mad-Eye was first introduced in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire as a legendary Auror who now lives in retirement. Many believe Moody lost his mind and began suspecting even his own shadow after so many years fighting Death Eaters, and his reputation within the wizarding community had suffered for it. Moody agrees to take the Professor of Defense Against the Dark Arts post at Dumbledore's request after Professor Lupin leaves the school following the events of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban . However, as many fans will know, Mad-Eye Moody never managed to teach at Hogwarts. Before the school year began, Alastor Moody was attacked and kidnapped by Barty Crouch Jr., who then took his place at Hogwarts using Polyjuice Potion.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Is the Best Book With the Worst Legacy

During his time as an Auror, Mad-Eye Moody was one of the most feared and respected. He never stopped working against Voldemort and even returned to the Order of the Phoenix for a second time during the Second Wizarding War. Mad-Eye Moody single-handedly filled most of Azkaban's cells, but his reputation as one of the best Aurors also earned Moody quite a few enemies along the way. During the First Wizarding War, Alastor Moody lost one of his legs, part of his nose and one of his eyes in battle. By the time Moody made his first appearance in the Harry Potter franchise, his leg had been replaced with a wooden leg, his face featured many battle scars, and his eye had been replaced with a magical one that prompted the now iconic nickname "Mad-Eye." Moody's replacement for his eye was not a normal glass eye, as it is often the norm. Instead, it was an extremely rare magical item that gave Moody some unique abilities. But how does Mad-Eye Moody's eye work?

  • In the films, Mad-Eye Moody's magical eye replaced his left eye. In the books, however, it replaced Moody's right eye.
  • While the movie depicted Moody's eye as similar to an eye patch, the book description simply states the magical glass eye was inserted directly into his empty eye socket.
  • Alastor Moody was wearing his magical eye when Harry witnessed Igor Karkaroff's trial inside Dumbledore's Pensieve. However, in the Goblet of Fire book, Moody still had both eyes during this time.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Made a Major Change to Its Harrowing Finale

As an Auror, Alastor Moody had an incredible assortment of magical items, from Invisibility Cloaks to a Foe-Glass and Sneakoscope. However, his most powerful and unique magical item was undoubtedly his magical eye. Mad-Eye Moody's magical eye gave him many magical abilities, like being able to look behind his back through his own skull or even looking through Harry's Invisibility Cloak . Moody's magical eye can rotate 360 degrees in his head and allows him to see through virtually anything.

While not specifically stated, Mad-Eye Moody's eye could've been made particularly for him. Moody himself complains that the eye started to malfunction after Barty Crouch Jr. used him when Barty took Moody's place at Hogwarts . However, little is known about when Moody lost his own eye and replaced it with the magical one, as well as how he lost his eye in the first place. While the Harry Potter films mention Rosier was the one who took Mad-Eye Moody's eye during battle, this is not the case in the books. And as Moody wasn't present during the trial against Barty Crouch Jr. and the Lestranges for the attack against Frank and Alice Longbottom, it's possible he was one of the Aurors responsible for their capture and lost an eye in the process.

The Wizarding World’s Most Important Parents Weren’t Harry Potter’s

Mad-Eye Moody tragically dies during the Battle of the Seven Potters as he and other members of the Order of the Phoenix are trying to transport Harry from 4 Privet Drive to the Burrow. Moody was traveling on a broomstick with Mundungus Fletcher, who looked like Harry thanks to the Polyjuice Potion. But once Mundungus saw Voldemort and the rest of the Death Eaters chasing them, he Disapparated and left Mad-Eye Moody alone. A killing curse took Moody's life, and the Death Eaters retrieved his body before the Order of the Phoenix could. After some time, when Harry, Ron and Hermione break into the Ministry of Magic, Harry finds out Moody's magical eye is in possession of one of his most disliked ex-Professors, Dolores Umbridge . Harry eventually retrieves the eye from Umbridge's office at the Ministry, raising an alarm and forcing Harry, Ron and Hermione to flee the Ministry. Harry eventually buries Alastor Moody's eye in the forest where the 1994 Quidditch World Cup was held, the only type of proper burial Moody could get.

Mad-Eye Moody's magical eye was truly one of a kind. It could see through almost anything and move inside Moody's head at will, granting a 360-degree range of eyesight for Moody, something extremely valuable for an Auror. The eye was also able to see through Harry Potter's Invisibility Cloak, which was one of the Deathly Hallows and could grant the wearer "true invisibility," according to the legend. This made Moody's magical eye one of the strongest magical items in the Harry Potter franchise. While it made sense for Harry to bury the eye out of respect for Mad-Eye's memory after his death, it is still a shame that such a powerful magical item could now be lost forever.

Fantastic beasts 4: will it happen franchise future & everything we know.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore certainly sets up a sequel - but will there be a Fantastic Beasts 4? Here's everything we know so far.

Quick Links

The latest fantastic beasts 4 news, fantastic beasts 4 hasn't been confirmed, fantastic beasts 4 cast, fantastic beasts 4 story, what hbo's harry potter reboot means for fantastic beasts.

  • Fantastic Beasts 4: Further News & Info
  • Fantastic Beasts 4 's future is uncertain due to various factors, such as the controversy surrounding J.K. Rowling and WarnerMedia's expansion of the Wizarding World with a Harry Potter reboot TV series.
  • Warner Bros. has not officially confirmed the development of Fantastic Beasts 4 , and director David Yates has stated that the franchise has been "parked," suggesting it may not move forward.

Fantastic Beasts 4 is the anticipated sequel to 2022's Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore , though Newt Scamander's return for another feature-length Wizarding World movie is far from certain. The Fantastic Beasts franchise, a prequel series set decades before the Harry Potter films, has not had the smoothest journey. Between the release of the second and third films, the role of Grindelwald was recast — with Mads Mikkelsen replacing Johnny Depp — and J.K. Rowling at the center of controversy. The Secrets of Dumbledore is the third installment, following Albus Dumbledore, Newt Scamander, and their allies as they aim to stop Gellert Grindelwald taking over the Wizarding World.

The future of Fantastic Beasts could depend on a lot of factors, especially now that HBO is officially expanding the Wizarding World franchise with a Harry Potter reboot television series.

The third film certainly leaves room for more of Grindelwald and Dumbledore’s story to be told in Fantastic Beasts 4 . Before the release of The Secrets of Dumbledore , it seemed rather clear there would be a fourth installment of the franchise. However, the future of Fantastic Beasts could depend on a lot of factors, especially now that HBO is officially expanding the Wizarding World franchise with a Harry Potter reboot television series . With WarnerMedia merging with Discovery too it seems likely that the Fantastic Beasts franchise may forever be a trilogy with no Fantastic Beasts 4 release date in sight.

Eddie Redmayne As Newt Scamander From The Fantastic Beasts Franchise-1

Forget Fantastic Beasts 4 - Newt Scamander Can Return In Harry Potter's Reboot Thanks To 20-Year-Old Easter Egg

Warner bros. has parked fantastic beasts 4.

The most recent Fantastic Beasts 4 news came on October 26, 2023, and could be the final nail in the coffin for the struggling Harry Potter prequel franchise. As reported by Deadline , filmmaker David Yates has confirmed that the Fantastic Beasts franchise has been parked and development isn't continuing. While WB. themselves have yet to give an official statement confirming Fantastic Beasts filmmaker Yates's comments, the studio hasn't denied them either, and his remarks align with previous responses from the cast and crew of the prequel franchise about the status of Fantastic Beasts 4.

"With Beasts, it’s all just parked. We made those three movies, the last one through a pandemic, and it was enormous fun, but it was tough," Yates explained in an interview while promoting his Netflix movie Pain Hustlers, "We’re all so proud of [Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore]. When it went out into the world, we just needed to sort of stop and pause, and take it easy.” While it was teased when the first movie arrived that Fantastic Beasts would be a 5-movie franchise, it seems that events in the years since have ensured it will end as a trilogy with no Fantastic Beasts 4 in sight.

Development On The Next Fantastic Beasts Movie Hasn't Moved Forward

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore was initially envisioned to be the third in a five-part pentalogy of Fantastic Beasts movies. However, there's still no word on whether Fantastic Beasts 4 has been confirmed as of late 2023. Comments like those from star Eddie Redmayne and the new Harry Potter TV series aren't exactly promising. Redmayne revealed in a December 2022 interview (via IndieWire ) that he's heard neither hide nor hair about plans for Fantastic Beasts 4 . With the Harry Potter reboot television show now at the forefront of the goings-on in the Wizarding World franchise, it looks like WB will focus all its efforts there rather than a Fantastic Beasts movie.

Which Characters Can Return For Fantastic Beasts 4?

Since Fantastic Beasts 4 hasn't been confirmed yet, there is no cast to report. That being said, on the slim chance that the movie is still happening, it's best to look back at previous installments to see who would carry over. Rowling doesn't look like she's giving Ezra Miller (The Flash) the boot just yet, and he'd likely return as a dying Credence. Presumably, Mads Mikkelsen (Doctor Strange) would stay in the role of Grindelwald, as Johnny Depp most certainly won't return, and Jude Law (A.I.) would remain as Dumbledore.

Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl) hasn't heard anything about Fantastic Beasts 4 going by his previous comments, but he'd definitely come back as Newt if the opportunity arises, and the same goes for Dan Fogler's (Balls of Fury) Jacob Kowalski. As for Queenie, Tina, and the rest of the gang, their lack of presence in Secrets of Dumbledore makes their futures less certain (particularly Tina).

How Secrets of Dumbledore Sets Up Fantastic Beasts 4

The plot of Fantastic Beasts 4 was teased by the ending of the third movie. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore ends with Aurelius being taken by Aberforth Dumbledore, who is revealed as Aurelius’ father. After losing the elections to lead the International Confederation of Wizards (ICW), Grindelwald and Dumbledore are now able to duel each other after the latter aims to defend Aurelius’ life from the former’s wrath. The breaking of the blood pact is crucial to how the franchise moves forward.

Dumbledore is no longer hindered by it and can finally engage with his ex-lover in a way he couldn’t for years. More importantly, the ending of The Secrets of Dumbledore reveals Grindelwald’s bad intentions to the entirety of the Wizarding World, who was watching the events of the election unfold. That could mean Grindelwald remains in hiding for most of Fantastic Beasts 4 , building his army behind the scenes before returning to the public eye.

The Wizarding World Reboot Isn't Good For Newt Scamander

Harry Potter next to Newt Scamander

The latest creative direction from WB. for the Wizarding World franchise is a Harry Potter reboot television series, which is officially making its way to HBO Max — and the news doesn't bode well for Fantastic Beasts 4 . After Fantastic Beasts 3 's poor foray at the box office, the fate of the Wizarding World hung uncertainly in the balance. Warner Bros. doubled down on its commitment to the Wizarding World franchise, despite its recent failures, as other products outside of Fantastic Beasts , such as the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child stage play and the Hogwarts Legacy video game, performed exceptionally well.

While Warner Bros. hasn't officially canceled the film, director David Yates has stated that the franchise is "on hold," suggesting that the film may not be produced.

While the announcement of a Harry Potter reboot television show being officially in the works at HBO Max is exciting news for HP fans, it seems like the final nail in the coffin for Fantastic Beasts 4 . With star Eddie Redmayne's admission that he's heard no news of the sequel, David Yates' full schedule, and now the announcement of a new Harry Potter project officially in development, Fantastic Beasts 4 seems to have been pushed to the wayside in pursuit of bigger and better things. Either way, Warner Bros. new focus could also end the possibility of a Fantastic Beasts 4.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Summary

Spoiler Alert: Important details of the novel are revealed below

‘ Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban ‘ begins with Harry’s vacation at Privet Drive, where he awaits his next year at Hogwarts more than anything. He is already bored of staying at Privet Drive and isn’t looking forward to meeting Aunt Marge, who is always rude and insulting. When she arrives, she makes fun of him and deliberately berates his parents. Enraged, he subconsciously uses magic and bloats Aunt Marge like a balloon. He then storms out of the house with his luggage. He finds the Knight Bus and is led into it by Stan Shunpike, its conductor. He then gets down at the Leaky Cauldron, where Cornelius Fudge warns him about Sirius Black and tells him to be to keep an out wherever he goes.

Harry eventually meets Hermione and then Ron and his family, who have just been on a trip to Egypt. There, Mr. Weasley further cautions Harry about Sirius Black and tells him to be careful at Hogwarts. They all go to King’s Cross by Ministry cars, which are eventually found to be kept for Harry’s safety.

They all board the Hogwarts Express and come across a compartment with only a professor named R J Lupin, looking disheveled and fast asleep. After a while, the train suddenly stops, and a black hooded figure with slits for eyes and a mouth enters, and Harry is suddenly reminded of an old memory of his mother screaming during her death, which results in Harry fainting. When he wakes up, Professor Lupin gives him a bar of chocolate and says that these creatures are dementors who are guards at Azkaban and were searching for Sirius Black.

Another school year begins in Hogwarts. They have a lot more classes than their first two years and extra subjects like Divination, Care of Magical Creatures, Arithmancy , and Ancient Runes. Hermione is adamant to take every class despite some of them being offered at simultaneous times.

In the first class of Divination, Professor Trelawney foresees grave danger in Harry’s future due to the Grim , an ominous symbol that resembles a black dog, spotted in Harry’s teacup. In the Care of Magical Creatures class with Hagrid, Harry is the first student to befriend a Hippogriff , Buckbeak , and sit on it and ride around in the sky. However, Draco Malfoy insults it despite warnings and eventually gets wounded by its claws. He complains to his father about it, and eventually, Hagrid is forced to face an inquiry in the Ministry about this.

In the Defense Against the Dark Arts Class, Professor Lupin gets a Boggart , a creature that changes its form based on the deepest fear of who is standing in front of it. The Boggart turns into a lot of different things before. Eventually, Professor Lupin stops the class when it is Harry’s turn to face Boggart. Harry isn’t able to visit Hogsmeade because his uncle didn’t sign the permission forms. He spends some time with Professor Lupin, who tells Harry that he didn’t let Harry face the Boggart because he was scared that it would take the form of Lord Voldemort .

Sirius Black is spotted in Hogwarts castle, and he tears apart the portrait of the Fat Lady to gain access to the Gryffindor dormitory. The students are all made to sleep in the Great Hall as the castle is searched, and nothing is found eventually.

In the first Quidditch match, Harry spots a large black dog during the game and eventually faces a group of Dementors in mid-air. He faints and falls down, only waking up later in the Hospital wing. He realizes that his Nimbus 2000, the Quidditch broomstick, was shattered by the Whomping Willow.

On their second visit to Hogsmeade, George and Fred give Harry a magical map called the Marauders’ Map, which helps Harry secretly go to Hogsmeade. Soon after, strangely, he receives a Firebolt broomstick as a gift for Christmas and is elated. However, Hermione tells Professor McGonagall about its arrival under strange circumstances, and they have an argument resulting in Harry and Ron becoming angry with Hermione.

Harry eventually learns how to fight dementors off with Professor Lupin’s help. Buckbeak the Hippogriff is sentenced to death despite the help that Hermione gave to prepare a strong case for the hearing. Eventually, the three reconcile, become friends again, and the exams come closer.

Harry, Ron, and Hermione go to see Buckbeak before his death but eventually end up leaving early from Hagrid’s as the executioner, minister, and Professor Dumbledore visit. Eventually, when they are about to leave for the castle, a large black dog appears suddenly and takes Ron by the leg, and drags him into the Shrieking Shack. Harry and Hermione follow in hot pursuit, only to realize that the black dog is Sirius Black. Professor Lupin enters after a while, and it turns out that he and Sirius Black are friends. Hermione is angry and reveals to everybody that Lupin is a werewolf. Eventually, Black and Lupin try explaining to the trio that it was Peter Pettigrew who betrayed Harry’s parents to Voldemort and is in the form of a rat hiding in plain sight. It is found out that Ron’s pet rat Scabbers , is, in fact, Peter in disguise. Professor Snape enters soon and disarms both Lupin and Black. Harry eventually disarms Snape, and he faints.

They then take Peter Pettigrew to the castle but have to stop when Professor Lupin transforms into his werewolf form, as it is a full moon day. Sirius Black transforms into his dog form to protect the trio from the wolf. However, a bunch of dementors swarms around Sirius near the lake. Harry tries to save him but to no avail. Finally, he sees someone else casting a Patronus and driving away from the dementors.

Harry wakes up in the hospital wing. Eventually, Dumbledore comes in and advises Hermione to use her time turner, a time-traveling device she has been using to attend simultaneously scheduled classes. They both go back in time, save Buckbeak from getting killed, take him to the top of the tower where Sirius is held captive, and save the day. It is found in the course of this adventure that it was Harry himself who cast the strong and powerful Patronus to save Sirius from the dementors.

Who gifted the Firebolt to Harry?

It was Sirius Black who gifted the Firebolt to Harry. Sirius realized that Harry’s previous broomstick, the Nimbus 2000, was reduced to dust when it fell over the Whomping Willow. Therefore, Sirius, being Harry’s Godfather, went ahead and bought him a brand new Firebolt.

What is Moony Wormtail Padfoot Prongs?

Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs are the nicknames of the four friends who together created the Marauders’ Map. Moony is Remus Lupin, the name owing to his being a Werewolf. Wormtail is a reference to Peter Pettigrew’s Animagus form of a rat. Padfoot is a reference to Sirius’ dog form, and Prongs is the name for James Potter’s Stag form.

What is a Time Turner?

A Time Turner is a time-traveling device in the Harry Potter universe. It is usually worn around the neck as a necklace. The Time Turner used by Hermione in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban required rotations to be made for each hour one decides to go back in time. However, in the narrative of this book, it is shown that time turners don’t change the past. They only allow one to go to the past and do anything that matches the continuity of the real world without any time paradoxes.

Harry Potter TV Series Sets 2026 Release Date on Max

Warner Bros. Television President David Zaslav revealed the premiere date for the new Harry Potter TV series on an earnings call this morning.

  • Fans can anticipate a new Harry Potter series in 2026, spanning all seven novels with a fresh cast and exciting stories.
  • Production of the Harry Potter series for Max is in the early stages, including selecting a showrunner and handling the challenge of casting younger actors for the initial books.
  • The highly anticipated new Harry Potter series is set to be a grand spectacle, with a budget potentially surpassing that of Game of Thrones spin-off, House of the Dragon .

It's no secret that Harry Potter is set to return to the small screen with a new series produced by Warner Bros. Television for its Max streaming service, but until now there has been no official confirmation on a timetable for its release. Fans of The Boy Who Lived can now look forward to a 2026 release date, which has been confirmed by David Zaslav, President of Warner Bros. Discovery.

As per Variety , speaking on the WBD Q4 earnings call this morning, Zaslav not only confirmed the date, but reiterated everyone’s excitement for the new Harry Potter series, which will see all seven of J.K. Rowling’s beloved novels adapted for television.

“We’ve not been shy about our excitement around Harry Potter.”

The series is expected to span at least a decade, and feature an all-new cast that differs from the film versions that ended 13 years ago. Zaslav spoke on the earnings call about how he and others from Max and Warner Bros. were in London a few weeks ago to meet with J.K. Rowling , and commented that it was a great experience. He would go on to mention how everyone is excited to be “reigniting” the franchise.

"We spent some real time with J.K. and her team. Both sides are just thrilled to be reigniting this franchise. Our conversations were great, and we couldn’t be more excited about what’s ahead. We can’t wait to share a decade of new stories with fans around the world on Max."

Production Has Yet to Begin on Max's Harry Potter Series

While producer David Heyman has promised viewers a more faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling's novels than was seen in their big screen counterparts, production on the new Harry Potter series has yet to begin. This includes casting, and writing, as producers are still trying to nail down a showrunner who will be able to tackle such an extensive project. Channing Dungey, chairperson of Warner Bros. Television, commented to Variety recently on the progress the series is making , and noted the particular challenges its facing, especially when it comes to casting its young stars.

"We’re in conversations with a number of different writers to figure out who’s going to be the person to lead that franchise for us. The first step for us is figuring out who this showrunner is going to be and once we get that locked down, then we can start having those [casting] conversations. The tricky part is the first two books, where the kids are on the younger end, around 11 or 12."

Most Unforgettable Plot Twists From the Harry Potter Movies

Are We Ready for a Harry Potter Reboot?

Fan reactions to the new Harry Potter series were mixed at the time of its announcement , and certainly not one that Warner Bros. Discovery hoped for, but as time has progressed, the reality of the situation has sunk in, and now conversations have turned to what fans want to see in the new series, and who should be cast. It's been reported that the series' budget will either equal, or surpass, the $125 million dollars per season given to House of the Dragon , the first spin-off from Game of Thrones which debuted in 2022, thus paving the way for a truly amazing spectacle that will be sure to rival the films.

All the Harry Potter movies are available to stream on Max.

Important Book Storylines That Were Cut from the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Movies

T rying to turn hundreds of pages into just a few hours of moving images can be a tricky task and one that can often result in entire storylines being cut . This doesn't usually change the outcome of the movie, nor does it drastically alter the journey taken to get there, but it can sometimes introduce plotholes or unanswered questions for those who never read the books.

Harry Potter: The Darkest Things To Ever Happen In Hogwarts

Despite being split into two separate two-and-a-half-hour movies, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows suffered this fate, with numerous plot lines and story beats never making it into the big screen adaptations. Many of these omissions were fairly minor in the grand scheme of things, but there were a handful of important storylines that really should have been included in the Harry Potter movies in some capacity.

Dudley's Redemption

Following his encounter with the Dementors at the beginning of The Half-Blood Prince , Dudley's attitude toward Harry changes quite a bit . Initially, Harry wonders whether his cousin might just be messing with him when he starts leaving cups of tea outside his bedroom door, but it soon becomes clear that this isn't the case.

As the Dursleys prepare to leave number four Privet Drive ahead of Harry's seventeenth birthday, Dudley shows genuine concern for Harry's safety. Some will perhaps argue that a few cold cups of tea and a moment of compassion don't come close to making up for almost two decades of torture , but others will feel as though the movies did Dudley dirty in this regard.

Kreacher's Redemption

Dudley wasn't the only character whose redemption arc never made it into the movies. In fact, his wasn't even the most significant. Kreacher's about turn and eventual acceptance of Harry as his new master was significant not only to his own personal development, but also to Harry's, who, in the books, at least, was able to forgive Kreacher for the role that he played in Sirius' death (a storyline which was also cut from the movies).

Kreacher's redemption arc also ties in with another cut storyline that sees Hermione form an organization to promote the rights of house elves known as SPEW . The bitter little house elf's change of heart proves that Hermione was right all along and raises the question as to whether Kreacher would have betrayed Sirius in the first place had he treated the house elf with just a modicum of respect.

Snape's Secret

One character whose redemption arc does make it into the movies is that of Severus Snape, though, in the movies, Voldemort never finds out where Snape's loyalties truly lie before his eventual death. In fact, Snape's secret very nearly dies with Harry, who wanders off into the woods to die without telling a soul about the countless sacrifices made by the former Potions Master.

Harry Potter: The 12 Most Powerful Characters In The Lore

In the book, Harry tells Ron and Hermione what he saw in the Pensieve after Voldemort has been defeated, but this conversation didn't make it into the movies. Harry also fails to tell Neville to kill Nagini before confronting Voldemort in the Forbidden Forest. He does so in the book on the logic that three people will still be aware of Voldemort's secret even after his death.

Phineas Black's Portrait

Phineas Nigellus Black was a former Hogwarts Headmaster with portraits at both the iconic wizarding school and number 12 Grimmauld Place. In the book, Hermione takes the portrait from the latter and places it in her bag so that she can continue to seek Black's advice whenever needed. As a result, he ends up playing a key role in proceedings.

As book readers will already know, Black hears Hermione mention to Harry and Ron that they're in the Forest of Dean and relays this information to Snape via his portrait in the headmaster's office. This is how Snape is able to find Harry and deliver the Sword of Gryffindor, yet, in the movies, it's never explained how Snape knows where to look. As far as Harry Potter plotholes go, this is a pretty big one, but it's not quite the biggest.

Sirius' Two-Way Mirror

In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix , Sirius gives Harry a two-way mirror that allows the pair to communicate over long distances. For whatever reason, this mirror was cut from the movie adaptation, but a broken shard of it does make it into both Deathly Hallows flicks, with Harry seen looking into the mirror multiple times throughout the course of the two movies.

Harry Potter: The 7 Saddest Deaths in the Franchise, Ranked

Were it not for this mirror, Aberforth would never have known that Harry and his friends were trapped inside Malfoy Manor and would thus have never sent Dobby to rescue them . As such, the decision not to explain how Harry came to be in possession of the mirror in the movies seems like a bit of a strange one given that he and his friends would almost certainly have died without it.

The Fate of the Elder Wand

At the end of the second Deathly Hallows movie, Harry Snaps the Elder Wand in half . In the books though, Harry decides to return the wand to Dumbledore's tomb, working on the logic that when he dies a natural death, the wand's power will die with him. Ultimately, the fate of the Elder Wand remains the same, but there is one key difference that the movies completely gloss over.

In the book, Harry uses the Elder Wand to repair his original wand, which makes the decision to get rid of the Elder Wand considerably easier. However, as this little detail was cut from the movie, he presumably ends up wandless, as it is impossible to repair a broken wand by any other means. Ollivander certainly seems to think so anyway, and with the only other known wand maker (Gregorovitch) slain by Voldemort, it's difficult to see how else Harry could ever hope to repair his broken wand.

Dumbledore's Dark Past

Despite his death at the end of the sixth movie, Dumbledore still plays an important role in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows , albeit, indirectly. He helps Harry and his friends learn the truth about the titular artifacts and shows up to greet Harry after the piece of Voldemort's soul that had once lived within him is destroyed. However, in the book, he plays a much larger role.

Despite being touched upon at Bill and Fleur's wedding , Rita Skita's expose of Dumbledore is never really explored in either of the movies. In the book though, it causes Harry to question whether he really knew Dumbledore at all, while also painting the former headmaster in a not-so-flattering light. It explores the fate of Dumbledore's sister Ariana too, a character who shows up in the second Deathly Hallows movie without ever being properly introduced.
