As a social media professional, presentations are an inevitable part of your job and a vital part of your career growth . If that gives you nervous butterflies, not to worry! Honing your presentation skills takes time, patience and practice.

Presentations can be a challenge, but they’re also an opportunity. Whether you’re presenting a new social strategy , proving the ROI of a campaign or pitching business to a new client, the basics of successful presentation are the same. Follow these tips (and use this template ) to create a compelling social media presentation that keeps your audience engaged from start to finish. 

Do your research

The first and most important part of any presentation is research. It’s the backbone of the story you’ll be telling. Rather than heading to Google and scouring the web blindly, use these questions to guide your research:

What’s your focus and objective?

You don’t usually just give a social media presentation for kicks and giggles. Perhaps you’re trying to get executive buy-in for a new social tool, or you want to pitch a new strategy to your social team. Whatever your focus may be, your presentation should be mission-driven, intentional and working toward a solution. 

Some of that research may come from digging into your previous social efforts. Find concrete examples of social posts that worked in the past to support future goals and projects. Uncover content gaps and growth opportunities by listening to your audience. Hone in on your KPIs and look for markers of social proof and ways to assign value to your insights. 

Pulling in proof-points and data to support your thesis is important but don’t lose your focus. Use your research to narrow in on two to three key takeaways that will ground your presentation. 

Who is your audience? 

Research for your presentation shouldn’t be limited to your topic. You’ll need to do a bit of research on your audience as well. Who you’re speaking to should inform why and how you’re speaking to them. 

If you work in-house and represent a single brand, chances are you’ll be presenting internally to peers and leaders that know you, your work and background on your topic. But social media marketers that work in an agency have different challenges that likely require a bit more research. 

If you’re pitching a social media plan to a new client, a deep understanding of their brand, industry and business needs is crucial. Beyond their brand background, you’ll need to narrow in on the client’s pain-points, who their competitors are, their current social strategy and more.

Create your deck

Just as social media connects us to a wider world, so do stories. Great storytelling in your presentation will help keep your audience captivated from start to finish.

The “deck” you’ll be presenting acts as the outline for your story arc and your slides are your illustrations. Use this free, customizable social media presentation template to create a polished slide deck.

Introduce yourself and your agenda

There’s a common piece of advice for speakers that goes, “Tell them what you’re going to tell them. Tell them. Then, tell them what you told them.” Following this framework will help set expectations with your audience and make sure you start and finish with impact. 

At the beginning of your presentation, add a slide introducing yourself and any presenting partners. After that, include an agenda slide that gives a high-level overview of your presentation. 

Consider also sharing your agenda ahead of time. This gives stakeholders an opportunity to respond with preliminary notes that could help you tweak your presentation so that it’s aligned with their expectations. This also gives your audience time to prepare questions ahead of time. 

Start with a hook

Engaging your audience early on in your presentation will help hold their attention throughout. With a good hook, you’ll lure people in and intrigue them from the get-go. A few of the most popular examples include shocking statistics, rhetorical questions, an interesting anecdote and inspirational quotes. 

Make slides succinct

Each slide you present should be simple, focused and void of unnecessary distractions. According to Paul Jurczynski, a TED Talk coach and cofounder of Improve Presentation, “The golden rule is to have one claim or idea per slide. If you have more to say, put it on the next slide.”

Use colors with a purpose in mind

In many cases, your presentation should incorporate the color schemes found within your agency or brand style guide . For example, let’s say you’re giving a social media presentation to a new customer or client on behalf of an agency. The audience may not know you as an individual, but they have an existing relationship with your brand. Colors and fonts are a simple way to set off those brand recognition triggers and remind your audience that you’re a subject matter expert. 

If you’re going to branch out, your colors need purpose. Consider the emotions associated with colors . For instance, people associate yellow with warmth and energy, whereas red is often associated with excitement and passion. No matter what color scheme you choose, it should be consistent throughout your presentation. 

Incorporate data visualization

Social media marketing presentations often come down to proving ROI for stakeholders. Data visualization like graphs and charts are a compelling way to make your case.  

In data journalist David McCandless’s TED talk , he explains that the beauty of data visualization is that “ that we can see the patterns and connections that matter and design that information so it makes more sense, it tells a story, or allows us to focus only on the information that’s important.”

Don’t get bogged down in mapping out every single data point you uncover during your research. The best graphs are simple graphs with takeaways that are easy to spot. Try highlighting key numbers or data points by using color, bolding or another visual treatment that makes them pop, like the example above from the Sprout Social Index . 

Show your work

It’s a social media marketing presentation, so naturally, you should share examples of your work on social media. Pull in screenshots of successful social posts to show how your tactics have worked for the brand(s) you represent. 

Wrap it up with a call-to-action

A powerful CTA always ties back to your original goal and encourages an action your audience can take once your presentation is over. Essentially, it’s your way to serve up a final take away and leave the ball in your audience’s court.

Plan your delivery

You’ve done your research, you’ve created your deck, now it’s time to plan your delivery. With the right approach, tone, prompts and pacing, your presentation could be about “nothing” and still be compelling. Just watch as Will Stephens does this masterfully.

Generate emotional responses 

As the great Maya Angelou once said, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Data points and numbers are great but hitting points that generate an emotional response is even better. 

For example, if you’re pitching to new clients about growing their social communities and you’ve grown a social audience by say, 50% in the last six months, that’s incredible! Don’t be afraid to share your excitement. 

Not every point of your story is going to be exciting. Decide what emotions you want to tap into ahead of time. Are you trying to inspire, inform, engage or entertain your audience? The best presentations combine a little bit of each. 

Pump the brakes

While you may feel the need to get through everything as quickly as possible, don’t be afraid to pump the brakes. A lot of people tend to speed up when they’re nervous. Nerves are normal, just remember to slow down, enunciate and take deep breaths.  

Take a few moments throughout your presentation to check in with your audience throughout the presentation so they can ask questions or have a point clarified if necessary. If the people you’re presenting to aren’t familiar with an industry term or social media metric, they may need a bit more explanation. 

Work out the kinks ahead of time

Practice, practice, practice. Don’t just skim through your deck. Treat your practice runs like they’re the real thing. If possible, present to a friend or coworker you trust to give honest, constructive feedback. The more you rehearse, the more confident and comfortable you’ll feel. 

You’ve finished your presentation, but you’re not finished yet. After you present, send your audience and any stakeholders the final deck, remind them about next steps and action items that came out of the presentation, and finally, thank them for their time.

With such outreach of social media, it is no surprise that businesses as well as individuals are leveraging every aspect of platforms like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter to make themselves heard. Facebook, for instance, is among the most used social media platforms with its 2.6 billion user base ranging from preteen kids using stories to update their friends about their best buy, to older individuals wanting to know what is happening around the world as they scroll down on their screens over a cup of tea.

Metrics like number of followers and likes are inconsequential as far as e-commerce and brand influence is concerned. Chasing these metrics, many companies just tend to be on every social media channel without knowing the purpose of that channel. As a result, the mission just gets lost in digits showing on a website profile bio. To overcome that, you have to choose the right social media channel to market your business. Here, the right channel is the one where you have your target audience. For example, if you are into a technology business providing networking solutions, a creative Instagram page full of stock technology pictures may not be the right channel to grow your brand. Instead, you can try LinkedIn, possibly the most diverse and well-connected platform for professionals and businesses alike. This instead rests on how well you know your target audience. #3 Set quantifiable goals

Even If Social Media Is Hurting Kids, Regulating It Won’t Be Easy

Warning: The surgeon general has determined that social media is harmful to your mental health, at least if you’re a teen.

Ordinarily, a sentence like that, which isn’t an unfair summary of US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy’s recent report on social media and youth mental health, would strike terror in the heart of the industry targeted by the advisory. Society typically outlaws minors from using products deemed unhealthy, such as cigarettes and alcohol.

When it comes to social media, however, the regulatory response to the surgeon general’s report will have to be tempered in an entirely different way. That’s because of a little thing called the First Amendment. The use of social media falls almost entirely into the category of expressive speech — which makes bans (like Montana’s prohibition on TikTok) and age limits (like the one proposed by a bipartisan group of senators) much tougher to pass.

Before I analyze the legal difficulties associated with regulating teen use of social media, let me make my regular disclosure that I advise social media companies like TikTok and Meta on issues related to free speech. I’m also a constitutional law professor. And under existing constitutional doctrine, the government can’t outlaw speech acts, even for teens, without going through a rigorous process of justification.

The courts apply what is called strict scrutiny to any governmental regulation of speech. In practice, that means the government must show that it has a compelling interest — a valid reason — to restrict speech and also that the regulation adopted is narrowly tailored to achieve that goal. Put another way, the government must adopt the least restrictive means of achieving its compelling interest.

That means that if Congress or a regulatory agency or a state wanted to limit teens’ access to social media, the first step would be to assert the existence of a compelling interest. And sure enough, protecting the mental health of young people is a compelling interest. As the parent of teens, I can hardly think of a more important one.

But the simple assertion of the interest is only the beginning of applying strict scrutiny. Under the First Amendment, it’s not enough for the government to claim that regulating social media would help teens’ mental well-being. The government would have to convince the Supreme Court that there is a narrow fit between the objective, namely protecting mental health, and the means adopted, namely a regulation of social media use.

The surgeon general’s report highlights the difficulty of proving a close fit. As the report makes clear, the evidence collected so far points to a correlation between some kinds of online experiences, such as being harassed and bullied, and bad outcomes like depression and anxiety. A review of several studies also suggests a correlation relationship between social media use and body image-related disorders.

Correlation, however, is not necessarily causation. And the report, in a section labeled “known evidence gaps,” says that “the relationship between social media and youth mental health is complex and potentially bidirectional,” meaning that the direction of causation can be difficult to ascertain. In plain language, depressed or anxious teens, or teens struggling with body image, might be more likely to spend time on social media.

To be clear, nowhere in the Supreme Court’s case law is it written that convincing scientific proof of causation is required to satisfy strict scrutiny.  The constitutional standard and the scientific standard are far from identical.

But the two different standards do overlap, conceptually speaking. When a court thinks that the government is regulating speech over inclusively or under inclusively, it strikes down the regulation. That conclusion maps, more or less, onto the court’s understanding that the means adopted don’t fit the objective — because the means aren’t targeting the cause of the problem with enough specificity.

The upshot is not that teens’ access to social media can’t be regulated but that the constitutional burden for doing so is much higher than it is for cigarettes or alcohol. The First Amendment protects speech; there is no fundamental constitutional right to smoke or drink.

The more evidence that public health experts can gather to ascertain the causal relationship between social media use and mental health, the stronger the case for regulation will become. But that will be an uphill battle without clear and convincing evidence that social media is what’s behind the rise in kids’ mental health problems.

Right now, the surgeon general’s argument that social media is behind teen anxiety and depression feels powerfully intuitive. Yet it is important to remember, too, that in the past, broad swaths of the public found it intuitively convincing that sexually suggestive films or comic books or rock music caused negative outcomes for kids. No doubt social media, with its ubiquity, plays a meaningful role in shaping teens’ experiences. At the same time, it is also worth contemplating the still-darker, hard-to-accept possibility that other ills in our society contribute significantly to the current mental health epidemic. Fixing those will take more than restricting teens’ access to social media.

Social security payments could be delayed due to debt ceiling impasse.

If the US is not able to pay all its bills for the first time ever, senior citizens could quickly feel the pain.

Unless President Joe Biden and House Republicans hammer out a deal to address the debt ceiling soon, the Treasury Department may not have enough funds to fully satisfy all of the nation’s obligations as soon as June 1 .

The first batch of Social Security payments – roughly $25 billion’s worth – are scheduled to be sent out on June 2. They mainly go to many of the oldest and most vulnerable of the roughly 66 million retirees, disabled workers and others in the entitlement program, those who started receiving their checks before May 1997.

Payments to more recent enrollees are set to go out on June 14, June 21 and June 28, depending on the day of the month one was born. The amounts are also about $25 billion each week.

More on the debt ceiling

But if the debt ceiling impasse is not resolved, those benefits could be delayed, along with paychecks to federal workers and the military , payments to Medicare providers, and federal grants to states and municipalities for Medicaid, highways, education and more.

Many senior citizens are already growing worried , especially in the past week or so as the deadline grows closer, advocates say.

Almost two-thirds of beneficiaries rely on Social Security for half of their income, and for 40% of recipients, the payments constitute at least 90% of their income, according to the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare. The average benefit for retired workers is $1,827 a month in 2023.

Max Richtman, the committee’s CEO, has been telling members to try to set aside some money to have a little cushion if their June benefits don’t arrive on time. But that’s not possible for many recipients.

“A lot of people in Washington are not that in tune with what this could mean,” he said. “If you depend on your Social Security for most of your living expenses, you’re not going to be able to pay your rent, buy your food, pay your utilities, the basics … pay out-of-pocket health care costs that may come up.”

He has tried to reassure folks that they will receive their full benefits eventually.

Older Americans are more aware of the debt ceiling battle – and the potential delay in payments – this time than they were during the last major standoff in 2011, thanks to the internet, said Mary Johnson, Social Security and Medicare policy analyst for The Senior Citizens League. Many are not only concerned about their benefits, but also that a potential stock market drop triggered by a default could decimate their retirement savings.

“I am very, very concerned about what this will do to our financial industry, as well as to our benefits,” she said.

It is possible that Social Security beneficiaries could be shielded somewhat from the full impact of the US defaulting on its obligations. Though it’s not known exactly how the Treasury Department will handle making payments with the funds it has on hand, the agency may ultimately decide to prioritize Social Security benefits – though likely after it has paid interest and principal on the nation’s debt.

Also, it’s possible the Treasury Department could continue making on-time payments because of the entitlement program’s trust fund, said Shai Akabas, director of economic policy at the Bipartisan Policy Center.

Since the US takes in less revenue than it needs to pay its bills, Treasury must borrow to cover all its obligations. But since the nation hit its $31.4 trillion debt ceiling , it cannot add to its borrowing until Congress addresses the cap.

When it comes to Social Security, Treasury obtains cash to pay benefits by borrowing from the public. But the payments reduce the balance in the trust fund, which consists of Treasury securities, according to the Congressional Budget Office. Because of that reduction in what’s known as “intragovernmental debt,” the payments have little net effect on the total amount of debt subject to the limit.
