An Honest Review of Short Story, the Personal Styling Service for Short People, by a Short Woman

' src=

If you’re below 5’4”, then you’re considered a shortie. As you probably already know, like most things, there are pros and cons to being of small stature . One of the cons being that clothes tend to fit weirdly on our short bods, whether they’re too long, too baggy, or overall ill-fitting. And if you’re plus size and short, shopping can be even more annoying. I’m on the higher-end of straight sizing and border on plus at a size 14. Every pair of jeans I’ve owned have always been comically too long, resulting in saggy ankles or me resorting to cuffing them so I look like a dude from The Outsiders  (IYKYK).

Over the past couple of years, I tried buying bellbottoms three times and they were all way too long for me. Heartbreaking for my ‘70s style goals! Dresses are much easier to wear, but there is a magic length holy grail that I have to search for when it comes to minis since a lot of skirts tend to rise higher in the back because of my booty. And if a dress is too long past the knee, I feel frumpy. I’ve learned to love maxi dresses, but I often have to get them hemmed or wear four-inch platform heels so I don’t look like a ghost floating around the halls.

All of these reasons are why I was so excited to learn about  Short Story , which is a subscription styling service that helps us shorties find cute clothes that actually fit. The founder and CEO, Isabella Sun, knows firsthand the struggle of being petite, as she’s 5’1” herself. “I’ve struggled my entire life to find clothing that fits, and intimately know the challenges of shopping as a petite person,” she tells Well+Good.

{{post.sponsorText}}

“For women of shorter stature, shopping can really suck. Finding clothing that actually fits our frames can be exceptionally hard because most clothing is designed for women who are much taller, and often fitted on 5’9” fit models.” After learning that nearly 50 percent of women in the U.S. were considered petite and had the same frustrating experiences, Sun decided to leave her corporate job as a financial trader and start Short Story. “I wanted to create a better shopping experience that actually inspired confidence in petite women by helping them dress in perfectly fitting clothes,” she says.

While Short Story carries classic and up–and-coming brands, they also develop their own line of clothing, which is based on real feedback from a whopping 100,000+ respondents. “From this data we’re able to identify crucial ‘patterns’ in everything from silhouette and color preferences, to sizing dimensions that allows us to create clothing that directly addresses all of this,” says Sun.

Strangely enough, I’ve never really considered shopping in the petite section because I always thought of it as not just for short people, but for tiny, size 0 types, so I wanted to make sure that Short Story had my size, which they did. (They currently carry sizes 00 to 18P and have plans to expand their size range.) As far as what items they offer, it’s everything from tops, jackets, dresses, pants, jeans, and more.

How Short Story works

First, you take a quiz that asks you about the items that you usually shop for, things you wouldn’t wear, your opinion of a few of their clothing and styling examples, what your budget looks like, plus basic questions about weight, height, and age. They’ll also ask for your Instagram handle so they can get an even better sense of your style. After that, you order your Short Story Box , which can be sent monthly or every few months, and they’ll match you with a stylist who uses your responses to curate your box just for you. The styling fee is $25 per box, and that money goes towards any items you decide to keep. You can cancel your subscription at any time, and shipping and returns are always free.

short story

When you receive the box, you’ll get a small pamphlet with information about each of the five pieces of clothing they sent, as well as tips on how to style them, which I find super useful. Then you just try everything on and keep your favorites. Everything else can be easily returned via the prepaid label and shipping bag that is included. You just have to return your items within five days to avoid being charged.

My honest thoughts on the Short Story box

marie lodi

This dress couldn’t have been more me. I loved the neon pink color and it was the perfect length—not too short and not too long, so I didn't feel like I was drowning in it. I can see myself wearing this to everything—date night, parties, work events, vacation. It was a dream to wear.

Black short sleeve bodysuit

I appreciated that they included a black bodysuit, which is a great basic piece for building a year-round capsule wardrobe. Even better, it was comfortable to wear! Sometimes bodysuits can be too long in the torso, or too tight if you’re closer to plus size, causing the bust area to be pulled down and your bra to show. This didn’t do any of that, thankfully, and gave me the perfect amount of cleavage. Overall, it just felt really good to wear.

Pink printed skirt

The color and print of this skirt was also another “perfect Marie” pick. I can see myself packing this skirt (along with the bodysuit) on a trip. That sexy thigh slit just screams vacation, baby!

Velvet floral print robe

robe short story

Robes are one of my all-time favorite pieces of clothing. They instantly make me feel like a glamorous eccentric aunt (which I am, actually). They’re also super versatile because you can wear one over a slip dress, lounge around the house in one (with some cha-cha heels), and even pair them with jeans or trousers. I loved the velvet, and the rose pattern is always a win for me.

Black jeans (by 1822 Denim)

black jeans short story

I had to save the best for last—the jeans! Like I mentioned, jeans are a sore spot for me when it comes to shopping. They’re usually way too long, and instead of getting them hemmed, I just deal with it. I was absolutely shocked when these fit me perfectly just putting them on. The only thing is I wish these had pockets. Otherwise, they were perfect.

Final verdict

Overall, if you’re a short person who has had trouble finding clothes that fit, or just wants to experience a personalized shopping experience, Short Story is totally worth trying out. I loved all of my picks and found the return experience so much more simple than when I shop regularly.

Short Story Box Is A Personal Styling Box For Petite Individuals, So I Tried It Out

Did you know that standard women's clothing is designed for people who are 5'5" and taller?

Farrah Penn

BuzzFeed Staff Writer

Hi, I'm Farrah! I'm not someone you'd probably think of as "short" — I'm 5'4"! — but when it comes to shopping, I tend to fall on the petite side. So when I discovered there was a clothing subscription box tailored to petite women, I was instantly intrigued.

the author holding a dog

The subscription service is called Short Story ! I wanted to try it out for a few reasons. The biggest reason? 90% of the time, everyday tank top straps are too long on me. I'm not sure if it's my torso, shoulders, or something else, but they'll slip off my shoulders or shift into a weird position that makes the entire top look ill-fitting. They're too loose and too long, so sometimes I end up getting them tailored. (At this point I should learn how to do it myself.)

View this photo on Instagram

A few other problems I find slightly aggravating: tops that should lay more fitted on me feel oversized or awkwardly gap, pants and dresses are sometimes too long, and blouses hang too loose on my frame, which doesn't exactly make me look super put together.

the author wearing a dress with an arrow pointing to the long straps

It's hard to tell in the first picture, but those straps kept slipping and it felt a little too low cut, so I ended up tailoring the straps so it would fit better. And while I don't often have a big issue with skirts or pants, this one in particular was too long. Like, it dragged. I tried to wear it like it was high waisted, and it was not meant for that.

I've never felt like a "short girl." (I also don't think 5'4" is short.) But whenever I have shopped in the petite section at stores, it's clear that the clothing fits better. So I did a little research to find out why.

A woman wearing regular size clothing; the same woman wearing the same clothes in petite

Standard women's clothing is designed for the 5'5"-plus person. It was Hannah Troy, an influential Brooklyn-based fashion designer, who came up with petite sizing after her study concluded that most women were short-waisted . While petite clothing usually means shorter pants, skirts, dresses, and shirts, it ALSO means things like  higher armholes, narrower shoulders, shorter bodices on dresses, and shorter rises in pants . (Highly suggest checking out this whole article !)

With all this in mind, I was eager to learn more about Short Story , a subscription box and personal styling service for petite women.

Psst — if you'd like to see how the clothing in this subscription box fit women who are shorter than me, watch this video!

Here's how it works: You take a style quiz, and an expert styler curates a handpicked selection that fits your taste and lifestyle. Your box is shipped to your address along with a prepaid bag to return anything you don't want to buy/keep.

They currently carry sizes 00p–18p with plans to expand. short story's wardrobe options include tops, pants, jeans, jackets, dresses, jumpsuits, and accessories from established and up-and-coming brands..

According to Isabella Sun, Founder and CEO of Short Story Box, "While we  generally  cater to women who are 5'4" or under, some of our clients are taller and get a better fit in petites because they have a shorter torso, shorter arms or legs. Petite clothing is really about proportions and a more tailored fit —   higher waistlines, shortened sleeve lengths and hemlines. We also carry a full range of sizes in size 00P–18P."

A style fee ($25) is included with your box, but it's applied as a credit toward the pieces you decide to keep. Your stylist keeps your budget in mind when it comes to picking out pieces, sending you items based on that range. You're also able to pick out how frequently you receive a box, from every few weeks, to monthly, to every couple months.

a woman wearing a regular size dress; the same woman in a petite size of the same dress

Isabella also said that they "select pieces based on your budget, and they range in price from $38 to $150+. Many of the brands we carry are our private labels developed in house specifically for petites, like The Raconteur, which is designed for the romantic petite girl."

Here's what it looks like when you sign up ! First, you'll answer a questionnaire . It's very thorough; I was super impressed! They begin by asking what you tend to struggle with when it comes to finding clothes.

a question and multiple answer choices

They then ask you to rate certain styles of clothes to get an idea of what you personally enjoy wearing.

A picture of clothes with the question "How do you feel about this style?" and multiple answer choices

Next we get more specific, including questions that ask your age, height, and weight. I had no idea there was such an in-depth measuring guide! It also helps if you own a measuring tape, since providing accurate measurements is what will help them select the right sizing for you.

Short Story Size Guide

I live in Los Angeles , which means my go-to is usually athleisure-style clothes around my apartment. I have plenty of those options, so I decided to go with everything else!

The question "Which of the following do you want to receive in your box?" with several options

I also liked that the quiz returns with more questions to get a better feel for your style, specifically what you like wearing when it comes to certain items of clothing.

The question "What style of jeans do you like to wear" with multiple options listed

Also colors and patterns! Hate animal print? You can tell them!

The question "Are there any colors you dislike wearing?" with color choices

As you can see, this is question #24 — which gives you an idea of how thorough they are! I appreciated it because it gave me an idea of what I could expect to see in my box.

The question "How often do you want to try new trends?"

And if you're like, "I have WAY too many coats," you can let them know that's not exactly what you're looking for with your order.

The question "Are there any pieces you do not want to receive in your box?"

One of the last sections of the quiz is budget and prices, and the questionnaire asks what you usually prefer to spend on different articles of clothing.

pricing options for tops

Finally, you can send a little note to your stylist to let them know what you're hoping to receive! Here's what I wrote:

The question "Are there any items you're currently searching for?" and a space to respond

This is totally optional, but you can send your stylist a Pinterest board of outfits that fit your taste. You can also send them your Instagram page (if public) so they can get an idea of how you dress.

Just like that, your stylist receives your order!

The confirmation response

My box came within the week that I ordered it! Inside was a welcome guide, a measuring tape (hell yeah!), the clothes, and a free small gift — which was a satin scrunchie I LOVE and have been using every day since the box arrived.

the author's first Short Story box

I loved that they included a measuring tape and guide on how to take your measurements. You can tell they really care about getting your size correct. Once you do this, you can update your personal information on the website in order to receive clothes that best match your proportions.

instructions on how to measure yourself

The box also comes with a prepaid envelope so you can send back any items you don't want to keep! It's super simple.

The presentation of the box was cute, too! I was shocked they were able to fit five pieces of clothing in this box.

a wrapped bundle of clothes

Now what you've all been waiting for: the haul! At first glance, I was impressed. My eyes immediately went to the dress, which felt very me. My stylist had written that upon looking over my Instagram, she thought this matched my taste. I think she nailed it! I also was drawn to the blazer. I mentioned I was looking for more professional clothes, and they really delivered.

a dress, blazer, camisole, sweater, and jeans

Here are the prices for each piece: The Harley Asymmetric Cutout Top ($48), The Zayd Slim Straight Jean ($59), The Nora Knit Blazer ($72), The Leyla Satin Cowl Neck Cami ($42), and The Palermo Printed Midi Dress ($68).

This pamphlet included a guide from my stylist! I'd sent her a Pinterest board of photos that felt like my style. She chose this collection based on that. I also liked that it showed all the fits on the models.

A pamphlet explaining the choices

Now for the try-on haul. I started with the dress and immediately noticed the fantastic quality. The great thing about this piece was that the straps tied, so I was able to adjust it to my liking. That meant I didn't struggle with strap slip! I never really buy long dresses, but I loved the length of this one. 10/10.

the author in the dress

Next, I decided to pair the blue silk tank top with the gray blazer. And y'all, this blazer is SO SOFT. It's extremely comfortable. AND! It fit me so well! Oftentimes, jackets and blazers look oversized on me. This one seems to be tailored perfectly to my frame. I really loved how chic this outfit looked.

the author in a blazer and cami

Here's a full-length shot. Pairing it with tall heels made me feel powerful.

the author's full outfit

Here's the downside of this beautiful blue silk top. The straps were a little too long, and I had no way of adjusting them! I've worn tops like these in the past, and they oftentimes don't lay on my frame very well. (Maybe I don't have the boobs to support it!!) It bunched and gaped in the front. I think this could be prevented with fashion tape, but I'd rather not have to do that.

the cami bunching in the front

I took the blazer off so that you could see how it fit. I think I would keep this top only because it looks so good with the blazer, but I'd have to pin or fix the straps in order for it to fit me better. If you scroll up, you can see that it looks so good on the model!

the author wearing the cami without the blazer

Next was this black, long-sleeved top. This isn't something I would have normally picked out for myself, so I was excited to try it on. However, I don't think the style was for me. But the material was REALLY soft and lovely. And it fit flawlessly! But...I just didn't feel very cute in it. Maybe if I styled it differently?

the author wearing the asymmetrical top

Next up, we have the jeans! I wish you could feel how soft these are. Since you can't, you're going to have to trust me when I tell you they are very comfortable. And, once again, the quality is there. I've never worn jeans that hit above the ankle, so my first thought was... Does it look like I'm wearing pants that are too short for me? Or is this simply A Look? The photo in the pamphlet made it hard to tell where it should hit!

the author wearing the jeans

Finally, because I was looking for more business casual outfits, Short Story separately sent me "The Veronica Pants" in latte! I absolutely love these pants. They're professional and sophisticated yet so comfortable. Perfect for those who have to return to office and miss the comfort of stay-at-home-sweatpants.

Here's my official rating for Short Story Box :

Style: 8/10

Comfort: 10/10

Service:  10/10

I would absolutely use this service again, especially if I was on the hunt for a specific article of clothing. I have a feeling the pieces in my next box will fit better once I update my exact measurements on my profile. What really impressed me was the quality of the clothes and the customized experience. For all my petite people out there: Would you try something like this? Let me know!

BuzzFeed was sent this box for free for review, but was under no obligation to give a positive review.

  • Short Story is a subscription service that helps women find petite-sized clothing.
  • Stylists use a questionnaire to personalize your box and continue to learn your style over time.
  • After giving the service a try for myself, I can't stop recommending it to my friends.

You will be charged a $25 styling fee per box, and the 5-6 clothing items that are included in your box start at $32.

Shopping for clothes that fit right on the first try is a tall order when you're petite. Unless I shop the junior section, blouses, jackets, bottoms, and especially one-and-done outfits like dresses and jumpsuits nearly always require some form of tailoring or tucking in.

I realize the obvious answer is to shop in the petite section, but oftentimes that inventory is limited, so I'm left searching for an alternative. When I came across Short Story , a personal styling service created by petite women, for petite women, I knew I had to give it a try.

What is Short Story and how much does it cost?

Short Story was founded by Isabella Sun back in 2019, with the intention of putting an end to the inevitable "ugh" that transpires when petite sizes shop for clothes. Currently, the service caters to women 5'4" and under, with sizes ranging from 00P-18P. Short Story carries its own exclusive clothing lines but also collaborates with brands like Vince Camuto, Vero Moda, and Liverpool, among others.

Subscribers can receive stylist-curated boxes every few weeks, monthly, every few months, etc., depending on their preference and the total cost of each box varies by budget. You will be charged a $25 styling fee per box, and the 5-6 clothing items that are included in your box start at $32.

How it works

One of the best parts of Short Story's service is how easy the process is from start to finish. First, you'll take the style quiz . Questions range from which items you have the most trouble shopping for, to how you feel about specific styles, your sizes, and budget preferences.

Once you've completed the questionnaire, you fill out your shipping and payment information. When your order is processed, a stylist will use your response to personalize your box.

You have five days from the time you receive your box to try everything on and decide what you love, and what you don't. Shipping is free, as are returns and exchanges.

My overall impression

I was impressed with Short Story from the very beginning. I found the service questionnaire to be thorough and thoughtful and received my box within two weeks of ordering.

Inside my box were six items: A leather jacket, a maxi dress, a jumpsuit, a pair of black denim pants, a button-down shirt, and a gold paperclip chain necklace.

The stylist assigned to my box did an excellent job choosing pieces that filled a gap in my wardrobe. Usually, I have a lot of trouble finding dresses, jumpsuits, and bottoms that fit me well and complement my petite shape and frame, but every article of clothing I received fits like a glove.

It may take some time for Short Story to learn your style

While all of the pieces included in my box fit nicely, there were one or two items that didn't quite align with my personal style. That said, this was my first time working with Short Story. It's highly possible that over time, Short Story stylists get a better understanding of the type of clothing you love and don't love based on what you keep versus what you return.

The bottom line

I would (and have already started to) recommend Short Story to any petite woman tired of sifting through countless clothing items only to come out empty-handed, or scheduling an appointment with their tailor. The clothing is high quality, and comfortable, and the stylists behind the site are experts in the space who curate a selection of items you'll not only want to wear but that you love to wear.

This feels a bit like a failed…

This feels a bit like a failed experiment. I was specific about my clothing and style preferences (especially the colors and types of fabrics I like to wear) and it seems like whoever styled my box just ignored all of it. I said I like to wear natural fabrics and don’t want athletic wear. Everything I received was polyester except a pair of gym shorts. The clothing ultimately was cheap looking, and cheap feeling- the kind of stuff that you buy at Forever21 and ends up in a landfill in a year (100% polyester pants with no pockets… really?). I REALLY wanted to like this service because I love supporting fellow short girls, but it’s a huge miss for me.

I have been pleased with Short Story

I have been pleased with Short Story. They have been easy to work with, including when I needed to lengthen my try-on time due to illness. The only reason I'm giving 4 and not a 5 is their limited plus size options. I'm shaped like a friendly basketball so more options for the rounder among us would be helpful.

Short Story Box Review from a Real Customer

short story subscription box review by wardrobe oxygen

There were so many folks in emails, Instagram DMs, and especially in the Wardrobe Oxygen community on Facebook who were curious about Short Story Box , a subscription service dedicated to petite women 5'4″ and under, I asked if a member of the community who tried it would write a Short Story Box review for the rest of us to know more about this new service. Mary Moore, a reader of Wardrobe Oxygen is a paying customer of Short Story and offered to share her honest thoughts with us.

Short Story Box Review

Did you know that half of the women in the United States are under 5'4″ tall ? Yep, half of us are petite yet you wouldn't know it by shopping the mall or your favorite online retailer. With most brands offering inseams of 31″ to 32″ in length and rarely offering petite cuts, you would think we were a country of leggy ladies (or women who have a passion for platform heels).

But needing petite fashion goes beyond the inseam of a pair of trousers. We shorter folk need shorter rises in our trousers, shorter torsos in our blazers, blouses, and dresses, and even narrower shoulders. Short lengths don't cut it; petite women need a completely different fit model for their fashion.

On top of that, while there are many retailers these days that carry petite fashion, there are few that offer petite fashion over a size 10 . I was intrigued that Short Story currently offers sizes 00P-20P and is in the works of extending that size range further. Mary is a size 16/XL and below shares her experience with what she received in her size from Short Story.

Short Story Box Pros

Short Story is a personal styling service for petite women 5'4″ or under. Think clothing subscription programs like Stitch Fix, Short Story has you complete a style quiz and with that and your feedback, the style experts will curate a box of apparel that you receive a box on a schedule that fits your needs.

This is awesome as it is hard to find stylish petite apparel. Many retailer do not carry petite fashion, or think that “short” options will suffice. Short Story Box curates a selection of petite-cut apparel in sizes 00p-20P.

Short Story Box Cons

I have shared before my frustrations with subscription box programs for apparel . I know not every program is problematic, but I am skeptical of any subscription program like this. While I know Short Story Box says they are looking to extend their size range, I really wish that they already offered more than just sizes 00-20 petite.

How Short Story Box Works

I'll break down below how Short Story Box works so you can determine if this subscription box program is a good idea for you prior to reading Mary's personal experience below.

How Selections for Your Short Story Box are Made

Once you complete the style quiz, Short Story will match you with one of its stylists who will handpick pieces that fit your taste, needs, and budget—and mail your picks to your door. Each box contains a curated selection of 5-6 pieces of clothing and accessories for you to try on at home.

How long do you have to try your Short Story Box?

You have 5 days from the date of delivery to decide what to keep. Then,  checkout online  and mail back anything you want to return. You will only be charged for what you keep. Shipping and returns are always free.

How Much Does Short Story Cost?

Each Short Story subscription box costs $25 and is charged when your stylist curates your box of clothing items. After you receive your box with the items that the stylist pick for you, you only pay for pieces you decide to keep, and that $25 styling fee is credited towards anything you keep from that box. That means if you buy a $100 garment, you will only pay $75 additional.

The styling fee can only be applied to purchases from your current order. It cannot be rolled over to your next curation and is non-refundable. This means if you do not keep anything from your Short Story box, you will still pay the $25 styling fee.

The pieces Short Story offers in the curated boxes in the price range from $35 to over $150. When you fill out your style quiz, you share with Short Story your budget so your stylist will send you items based on that range.

Can You Customize a Short Story Subscription?

Just as with other subscription programs, the default delivery schedule for Short Story is monthly. However, Short Story lets you customize your delivery schedule so you can get boxes more or less often. Also like other subscription boxes, you have the ability to communicate with your stylist, providing feedback, requesting specific items, etc.

How Do You Cancel a Short Story Subscription?

Unlike some subscription programs that require you to jump through hoops to pause or cancel the service, Short Story keeps it relatively simple. To cancel, log into your profile and go to the Settings tab in the top right corner. Then click  stop receiving automatic shipments   and select “Let me schedule my own boxes”. This means you won't receive another Short Story subscription box until you request one.

Short Story Box Brands

Short Story has petite tops, pants, pairs of jeans, jackets, dresses, jumpsuits, and accessories in a variety of styles and price points. You will find clothing brands like:

  • Joe's Jeans
  • Vince Camuto
  • Good American
  • Short Story's in-house brand Petite Principle.

Short Story Box vs. Stitch Fix

I think most think of Stitch Fix when thinking of a clothing subscription box, and I know many of you have tried this service over the years to mixed results. Some of you love Stitch Fix, some of you have been underwhelmed. Since my Stitch Fix review , Stitch Fix has increased their selection and size range. Stitch Fix carries petites in sizes 0-16P and you can complete your style guide to reflect your needs for petite apparel. Short Story Box has a more extensive petite size range.

Short Story Box says they have clothing that goes up to $150+ in price; Stitch Fix states they offer apparel up to $500+. If you are looking to stay on budget, Short Story Box may be a better choice for you. If you are looking for more elevated apparel, Stitch Fix may have the options you desire.

Stitch Fix charges $20 for their styling fee, Short Story Box charges $25. Both companies use that styling fee towards the cost of what you choose to keep, and both charge you the styling fee if you do not keep anything in your delivery. Stitch Fix offers a discount on your order if you keep everything sent to you; Short Story does not.

The biggest difference I think that matters to those considering Short Story Box is that the company's stylists are focused on petite customers and only petite customers. Stitch Fix offers fashion for women, men, children, and those who are pregnant. With Short Story Box being so specific, I can only imagine petite individuals will have a better chance finding clothing that actually fits their body and their tastes and finding a favorite item (or more) for their wardrobes.

Before I pass the baton on to Mary, I want you to know that Mary has been paid a fair rate by me in thanks for this Short Story Subscription Box review, but she paid for the subscription herself. Short Story is not aware of this review at the time of publishing as I wanted this to remain honest and unbiased.

Embracing Change with a Short Story Subscription: A Confidence-Boosting Wardrobe Experience by Mary Moore

From virtual work and time alone to reflect on what truly matters, the past few years have been a whirlwind that was challenging and transformational. Now I find myself embarking on a new journey, including a move to a new part of my state and leaving a great career at a community college. This also means a new job search. As a 61-year-old with a newly-embraced grey hair and a pandemic pudge, I really needed a wardrobe makeover that would boost my confidence during interviews and reflect my style.

On the Hunt for Petite Fashion Beyond a Size 10

I was particularly anxious about finding comfortable, cute and well-fitting petite sized items in 16, or XLP, that were versatile and would fit in an education or business environment. My work requires me to wear a lot of hats: meeting with students, interdepartmental team projects, and meeting with employers and local government officials. Sometimes I am doing all three in the same work day.

Petite clothes have always been a bit of a challenge to find. When I find something I like it's rarely available in my size. If I can find it in my size, petite fashion is either frumpy or super dressy, neither which fit my style or lifestyle. I like to pair classics with casual and highlight my own jewelry work in silversmithing and bead weaving crafts. My go to brands are Coldwater Creek , Chicos , and Universal Standard , but sometimes the vibe is too casual or too dressy for my needs.

I was on a mission after applying for several job positions and spent two weekends on a hunt at local malls with very little success. I found either the size or style selection was limited. Falling back on ordering online, I had great difficulty finding petite 16 or XLP jackets and pants even from from Macy’s , Belk , and JCPenney . I was disappointed and nervous that I wouldn’t find the right items to help me feel confident in interviews.

Discovering Short Story Box

During my plan for a wardrobe refresh, I saw Short Story boxes advertised on social media and TV commercials. I was initially hesitant about styling and pricing, as previous subscription boxes for me have been hit or miss. However, I finally decided to try a Short Story Box, seeing it as an investment that could save me endless shopping trips and returns.

Completing my Short Story style quiz, my styling request focused on business formal outfits to build up an interview-ready wardrobe. I provided my sizes, color preferences, and some specifics about what I considered my casual, unique and a little funky style.

I received an email notification two days before the Short Story box arrived. The box arrival, and the unboxing experience is a much-needed self-care treat. Even the boxes are well designed, with a great brochure with images, brands, descriptions, and costs of every item in the box.

Through my Short Story subscription, I have now discovered new favorite brands like Liverpool and Margaret M, alongside the in-house brand, Petite Principle. It was lovely to realize that Petite Principle's pieces, such as a grey suit jacket, blended comfort, and style perfectly, matching my preferences for classics with a touch of casual flair.

A Transformation Thanks to my Short Story Box

The wardrobe transformation through my Short Story Subscription Box has been invigorating and empowering to me. I now have several interview outfits that make me feel confident and comfortable, seamlessly transitioning from business formal to business casual settings. The new sparkle in my eyes reflects the assurance I now feel about showcasing my skills and talents during interviews, free from concerns about my appearance.

Hits and Misses from my Short Story Box

As with any subscription box, there were some hits and misses. While I purchased around 50% of the items sent to me in my Short Story Boxes, I returned the majority of the shirts, finding them either flimsy or too trendy. I have kept two tops: a turquoise shirt with pom-poms and a plain white tank. I haven’t had any luck with dresses as they didn't fit comfortably over my chest.

Returning items not selected from a Short Story subscription box is hassle-free. Short Story gives you a five-day window to try on items and decide what you want to keep. Each delivery comes with a postage-paid envelope. I just drop in what I don't want and drop it in my mailbox. You aren't charged by Short Story until you notify them what you want by completing checkout.

A Confidence-Boosting Success

My greatest successes with Short Story are petite pants and jackets. Previously, my closet lacked interview-appropriate options, but with Short Story's assistance, I now have a versatile collection of dark maroon, dark grey, black, and navy pants that have proven comfortable and suitable for various occasions.

Most of the style of jackets in my closet all have a touch of flair, such as rhinestones, embroidery, and denim. While I enjoy wearing them, these weren’t what I needed to be interview ready. However, the Petite Principle jackets are exactly what I needed to elevate my interview outfits. The light grey jacket, in particular, had become a fast favorite.

As a petite person, I am used to alterations. So far, the only alterations I have had to make from any Short Story box purchase was with a moss green jacket sleeve length for a perfect fit.

Embracing Change and Moving Forward

Taking the plunge with Short Story was undoubtedly a great relief. The curated subscription box provided me with business wardrobe staples and adaptable pieces that fit both business formal and business casual settings. Alongside my newfound wardrobe, I also rediscovered hidden treasures in my own closet, now pairing them with Short Story's selections for a refreshed and confident style. As I continue my job search, I'm excited by the prospect of finding a new opportunity that appreciates my talents and passion for Workforce Development, with the added boost of confidence that my wardrobe refresh has given me.

Is the Short Story Box Worth It?

Is the Short Story Box Worth It?

My experience with Short Story has been a positive one. Amidst major life changes, the wardrobe refresh brought me confidence and I helped me reevaluate many pieces in my own closet. It has been worth the investment and I feel ready to take on new opportunities. Short Story's styling and selections have matched my preferences and requirements for business wear, allowing me to focus on my applications and interviews.

Now that I have great options for interviews, I changed up my Short Story Box styling requests to business casual and look forward to seeing new items and brands.  I am working to embrace change and all the adventures that lie ahead, and now feel supported by a wardrobe that reflects my unique style and personality. Wish me luck!

I want to be able to preview clothes and pick things out , I couldn’t find anything on that sight to do thst. So I might stop subscriptions. I want to see what I am getting. I am picky!!

Mary and Allie,

I think it would be fun if the company had a companion line they call Tall Tales for us taller people who have trouble getting pants that are long enough.

LOL love that!

Thanks for a great review of a company I didn’t know existed. The difficulty finding petites in extended sizes is hit or miss. It will be fun trying on different brands.

Great review, Mary! Your writing, wardrobe, accessories, hair and make-up lead me to think you will soon be hearing, “You’re hired”! Please keep us posted on your new journey.

Wonderfully detailed review, Mary, and those pants look fabulous on you. Love how you’ve styled them!

Thanks so much for your review Mary! You gave a great assessment of the services offered and you look great in the Short Story pieces. I’m going to keep this in mind since Petites are getting harder and harder to find.

Mary, you look terrific and ready for those interviews! I wish you the best and I hope your interviewers appreciate the experience and wisdom you have to offer.

I just wanted to add that Stitch Fix now lets you shop without a subscription. I like one of their brands, Market and Spruce, and I often find good prices on accessories, where fit is not usually a concern!

Great review and you look terrific in those clothes! I’ve tried one Short Story box so far and kept 1 out of the 5 items. I’m looking forward to seeing if my second box (due out next week) is closer to the mark on more items. One interesting thing to note is that I told them in my “what I’m looking for” description that I strongly prefer natural fabrics/natural fabric blends like cotton, silk, linen, and wool. My first stylist let me know that they don’t carry many items made mostly from natural fabrics, and my second stylist sent me a nice note today saying:

“I wanted to let you know that while we have a limited selection of products made of these fabrics but we also have other natural fabrications like modal and rayon. Modal is actually considered a more eco-friendly alternative to cotton because beech trees don’t require much water to grow and the production process uses about 10-20 times less water. Rayon is a fabric made from natural plant sources.”

They gave me the option to reply if I was ONLY open to my preferred fabrics to let them know before they proceeded pulling my pieces. However, while I strongly PREFER those fabrics I listed (find that they breathe better, hold up better over time, and crease/wrinkle/pill less), I’m fine with receiving some of their options which I hope might wow me.

Great post. I’ve been Short Story curious as well. However, petite pants cut me in the rise and give me camel toe, so I’ve been holding off. I might give them a try soon but not request pants. 😀

I should state that I’m 5’1″ and weigh 120 pounds so I’m definitely in the petite range but my bone structure is a smidge on the small side, rather than petite. And I’m well-endowed, even after a breast reduction (did not get implants).

Perhaps you could specify your maximum front rise & back rise requirements to them before ordering, then? That should help reduce the ‘bisected camel toe’ look, lol.

I have also been trying Short Story and am purchasing at about the same rate – most often I buy about 2-3 of the 5 items in the box. They are batting around 50/50 on pants, all of the tops have fit although some didn’t look good (particularly in terms of colors), jackets and dresses have been great although not always appropriate for my lifestyle.

I will say that I didn’t realize what a huge difference petite jackets or tops could make to how my outfits came together until I tried this box. I had tended to focus on pants, but a jacket cut to my height made a huge difference – it only looks oversized when it is supposed to look oversized for a change.

All the best with your new adventure, Mary – a lovely thorough review!

I am by no means petite, but I appreciate the thoroughness and authenticity with with you approach any topic in your blog. i am much your senior, but I have many of the same daily health, fashion, and life concerns. Thank you!

I love the outfit with the yellow cardigan and bag! What a great way to show your personal style while looking competent and sharp. Best of luck with your job search!

Thank you for this post, Mary! You look amazing in these outfits. I hope we get a follow-up on your job search. I am also petite and always searching for solutions.

Mary – Good luck! We are twins, the same age and body shape. I will go ahead and give it a try, and hope I am as lucky as you.

If You’re Petite, This Is For You: Short Story

February 16, 2021 •

petite-dress

A few weeks ago I was scrolling through Instagram and saw a post that drew me in. The post was from @shortstory and it talked about proper fit for petite women. Now, I’ve never considered myself to be petite-just short. But as I was looking at this post I realized that maybe I should be shopping petite sizes. The problem I have, or thought I had, was that I’m short waisted and as a result clothing wouldn’t always fit me correctly. Again, maybe I’m not short waisted, but just petite.

So what exactly does it mean to wear petite size clothing? Well, petite clothing are designed for women 5’ 4” and under. Petite sizes range from xsmall or 00 to xxlarge or 18/20, the same as standard clothing sizes, but there is a difference. For example, petite pants will have a shorter inseam, often up to 2” shorter, and a shorter rise. Dresses may have shorter hemlines and a higher waistline. Sleeves will be shorter—you get the idea. This was an eye opener for me!

Enter Short Story, personal styling for petite women. While there are many companies that have a stylist shop for you and deliver your personal box by mail, Short Story is the only such company that caters strictly to petite women. And when you have one focus you get it right!

So how does it work? To get started you take an online quiz and create your style profile. Here you let the stylist know what types of clothing and accessories you’re looking for based on your likes, needs, sizes, and budget. Each box charges a $25 styling fee, but this charge will be credited towards your purchase. Once the box arrives you can try on all five pieces in the comfort of your own home. What’s nice about this is that you can style your pieces with what you already own to make sure they’ll really work for you! You have five days to return your purchase (you can keep as much or as little as you’d like) in the envelope Short Story provides along with a prepaid label. Shipping and returns are free! When you checkout online you can leave feedback for your stylist about each item. I love this because I feel like they’ll get more of a feel for your likes/dislikes and fit as they read your comments.

I also love to get packages so it’s always exciting when I know my Short Story Box is coming. You can check online when your package is due to ship and you’ll receive an email once it’s shipped and when it has been delivered. Another aspect I like about Short Story is that you can decide how often you want to receive a box from every 2-3 weeks, once a month, once every 2 months, 3 months, or 4 months-your choice depending upon your needs and budget.

I was so excited to get my box and when I opened it, I was not disappointed. A little disclaimer here-I actually cheated a little. When I saw that my box had been sent I went to the checkout link and saw what was being sent. I know, I have no patience! Seeing the photos made me so excited that I immediately went to my closet to start looking at how I was going to style each piece! If you’re like me, I know you just want to see them already so here’s what I received!

petite-jumpsuit

This wrap jumpsuit is so cute. Granted I do have a good number of black jumpsuits, (I don’t think anyone can have too many black jumpsuits) but the fit of this one is new for me. The waist hit me at the perfect spot and the pants were not dragging on the floor. An eye opener for someone who has never shopped petite clothing before! I paired this jumpsuit with a duster from my wardrobe and I love how it looks-and feels. The length was perfect with a pair of kitten heels. This Boden jumpsuit comes with a belt but looks great with or without it. I’ll also wear it with a long sleeve shirt underneath, add a jean or leather jacket, or wear it as it is. Adding sneakers, booties, flats, or sandals, this jumpsuit is such a versatile piece.

Short-Story-Box-jumpsuit

A summer dress is always a yes for me! I love this dress with a jean jacket and sneakers. It has an open back, which is not my style (and something I’ll let the stylist know about when I check out online), but wearing a jacket or sweater over it is perfect. This will also look really cute with a pair of sandals. While I’m not keeping this Illa Illa dress, I wish I could because from the front it’s just adorable.

Illa-Illa-petite-dress

This Petite Principle crewneck sweater can be worn in so many different ways. For a little dressier look, I chose a pair of lace pants, heels, and a cute bag. Then I decided to try jeans and booties, which I also loved. This sweater will look great with flats or sneakers, with a skirt or over a dress. So many options!

Petite-Principle

I’m pretty conservative when it comes to showing skin, but shoulders are one area that I think are sexy and always look good. And this gorgeous Line + Dot cold shoulder top proves just that! I felt incredible when I put it on-sexy and beautiful. Paired with a pair of leather pants or jeans, this will be a perfect date night outfit. I loved this top, not only because of how pretty and sexy it is, but also because it is fully lined and has adjustable straps. While I wore it with a partial tuck, being a petite size it’s a shorter length and so it can be worn untucked and look great. I’m really experiencing a whole new world with petite sizes! Thank you Short Story!

Line-Dot

And for my favorite piece, this Lily Aldridge for Velvet utility jacket! Oh. My. Goodness. I am going to be living in this jacket. It’s just perfect and hits me at all the right places. I paired the jacket with a slip dress and combat boots, but it will be equally as cute with jeans, a t-shirt, and sneakers. This will definitely be worn on repeat.

Lily-Aldridge

As you already know, I love fashion and I love to shop. Shopping in a store is always great, but if you are 5’4” and under, you’re really busy and don’t have time, if you’re staying home because we’re in a pandemic, or if you like receiving packages in the mail (me me me!), Short Story is for you. The fit will be spot on, you’ll learn about new brands, and you’ll be shopping in the comfort of your own home! What could be better? Oh wait-this can-use this code to get the styling fee waived off your first box shortstorybox.com/referral/MicheleLee

Happy Shopping!

This sounds like such a great company to work with and I love the unfits you are highlighting, especially the jumpsuit and that bag:) I love ‘cold-shoulder’ tops and the one you are wearing is perfect. I’m 5’6″ and although I don’t qualify for ‘petite’ sizes, I do find in certain stores, I can easily wear a med in petite when I would usually be a small in a regular size, also the length sometimes works better for me. Thank you for sharing, great read!

All of these looks are beautiful on yoU! I especially love the off the shoulder top and the black pants. I love to pair dressy with casual, feminine with masculine, high end with less expensive, mix prints-you get the idea. Here I’m wearing a cute, but inexpensive skirt and top from @foxs I’ve gotten so many great pieces from Fox’s and the price point is really good as is the quality of what I’ve purchased. I decided I didn’t want to be dressy, although this is an easy outfit to dress up, so I’m wearing my trusty @birkenstocks To keep it more casual I added a beaded necklace that I made (I used to make jewelry and lately I’ve been playing again!) To finish my look I chose a white @chanel bag and I’m ready to head out! How do you mix up your outfits?
