The best free stock video sites to use in 2024
Finding the best free video clips
Using free stock videos in the right places of projects can really bring projects to life, regardless of whether they're for presentations, websites or your own home-made videos.
But finding the right video clips can be tricky, as many stock video sites charge a subscription fee for their best content. Thankfully, there are also places where you can download high quality video clips completely free of charge for both personal and commercial use, with no royalties or strings attached.
We've put the best free stock photo sites under the microscope and picked those that offer the best combination of video quality, variety of clips, and flexible licensing. And to finish your project, check out our guide to the best video editing software and the best free video editing software . There's something for everyone, regardless of experience.
- Here's our pick of the best free stock photo sites
The best stock video site overall is: Shutterstock For professional and commercial work, it's hard to beat the quality and sheer variety of stock video available on Shutterstock. It's not free, but with over 17 million clips available (including 4K and HD footage), you're almost guaranteed to find something suitable for your project.
Reasons to buy
Reasons to avoid.
There are some truly spectacular free stock videos videos available on Pexels – all under a Creative Commons 0 (ie public domain) license, which means you’re free to use them for personal or commercial projects without attribution.
The time-lapse stock videos are particularly lovely, and there are plenty of fun clips from GoPro-wearing divers and climbers. Pexels also include a handy ‘mockup’ category for footage of mobile devices with green screens that can be easily replaced via chroma keying.
Search results include premium videos from Shutterstock, but unlike most stock video sites, Pexels displays these at the bottom so you’re unlikely to mistake them for free clips.
Free stock videos are provided in MP4 format in HD. The only drawback is the lack of clips in 4K , but if Full HD is enough for your project, Pexels should be your first stop.
If you need stock photos, Pexels also offers a great selection of premium-quality stills under the same license.
2. Stock Footage for Free
Stock Footage for Free feels like the video equivalent of free stock photo site Unsplash , focusing on quality rather than quantity. The footage is extremely impressive; we particularly like the selection of landscapes and looping backgrounds.
You’re given a detailed description of the video so you can be sure it’s the right one before downloading it. This is a sensible decision; downloads can take a while because of the large file sizes. The site’s HD videos are provided in MOV format, but there aren’t currently any 4K clips available.
Free stock video clips are free for personal and commercial use, unless it’s a seriously high-budget production. Stock Footage for Free provides a detailed license agreement that makes explicit all the intellectual property information you’re likely to need.
Before you can download files you’ll need to sign up for a free account or log in using Facebook. At the time of writing, an error meant that we were unable to log in using an email address, though the Facebook option worked fine. We’ve reached out to the company to find out if this is an issue that can be resolved.
Pixabay is best known as a resource for free stock photos , but is also has a great selection of free stock video clips available to download and use, no strings attached.
The videos are all submitted by Pixabay’s community of users, and are generally under a minute in length. The site is a good option for abstract images like clouds, as well as somewhat niche clips (the video of a man preparing pieces of beef is a particularly odd example).
There’s a small selection of 4K video too, motion graphics, and some infinitely looping clips that are handy for websites.
All clips are provided free for personal or commercial use, with no attribution necessary. The files are provided in MP4 format, in a choice of resolutions.
4. Clipstill
Clipstill is dedicated to cinemagraphs – still photos containing a small repeated animation that plays on a loop. The effect is hypnotic, and a great way to grab viewers' attention. There's only a small selection of cinemagraphs available free (most of the videos on the site are premium content), but they're high quality and change each month, so it's well worth keeping Clipstill bookmarked.
Clipstill's cinemagraphs are available to download as small video files, and are particularly well suited to web design.
It's not essential to provide credit when using Clipstill's videos, but a link back is appreciated. You're free to use cinemagraphs in your own projects unless you're making a commercial product in which it's the main attraction, such as a greetings card or website template ( see the licensing page for full details)
Footage from Videezy is royalty free for personal and commercial use, but users are asked to credit ‘Videezy.com’ in their projects.
Most free stock videos are provided in HD resolution, but there’s also a good selection of 4K clips – mostly landscape scenes and abstract clips rendered using Adobe After Effects.
The quality is mixed, but generally high. We particularly like the selection of aerial drone footage
All videos are supplied in MP4 format, and you can see the resolution below the preview on the download page.
Keep an eye out for search results marked with a green 'Pro' tag; these are premium clips only available using paid-for credits. The first two rows of search results are also sponsored videos from Shutterstock, which also require a paid membership to download.
Videvo offers thousands of free stock videos contributed by its community of users. Quality is variable (a few clips have clearly been shot without a tripod) but they’re generally good, and there’s a huge selection to choose from so it’s highly likely you’ll find something suitable – even if it takes a little while.
If you'd like to contribute your own videos for others to download, you can do so after signing up for a free account.
Videos on Videvo fall under one of three licenses, so be sure to check which one applies to your chosen clip before you start working: Videvo Standard License, which lets you use the clips in your own work without attribution, provided you don’t redistribute the footage; Videvo Attribution License, which is the same as the Standard License, but requires you to credit the clip’s creator; and Creative Commons 3.0 Unported , which lets you share and adapt the clip, but requires you to credit the creator and indicate if you’ve made any changes.
Clips marked ‘Editorial use only’ can’t be used commercially, but those labelled ‘All projects and media’ can.
As with many free stock video sites, the top row of search results are actually premium samples from an advertiser (in this case Shutterstock). Scroll past these for Videovo’s own clips.
Some clips are provided as MP4 files, while others are delivered in QuickTime format. There’s a small selection of 4K clips, but half of these are Christmas-themed motion graphics. If you’re specifically looking for 4K video, you’re better off looking at one of the sites listed above.

We’ve rounded up a list of resources where you can get free stock videos to use in your marketing content.
Free stock video sites
People watch more than a billion hours of video on YouTube every day. Over on TikTok, more than a billion individual videos are viewed daily.
Even Instagram — the world’s most popular photo-sharing app — has announced that it’s shifting its focus to video … probably because Instagram videos get twice the engagement of Instagram photos.
Overall, the average person spends about 100 minutes a day watching online videos.
The bottom line? Internet-using humans are obsessed with videos.
Which means that video should be a vital part of your marketing or social campaign . (Wait, should this have been a video instead of an article? Excuse us while we have a quick spiral.)
But you don’t need a professional videographer to create professional-grade video content for your marketing or social media accounts. You just need a good list of free stock video resources.
Which is exactly what we’ve got for you here. Read on for a list of websites for stock footage you can repurpose, remix or reimagine, without any stress about copyright infringement .
(Looking for great stock photo options, too? We’ve got you covered there, too, with our list of free stock photo websites .)
So grab the clips you need, and then add text, graphics or music to create highly watchable videos for your next marketing campaign… all for a sweet, sweet budget of zero dollars.
Let’s get to movie-making, shall we?

The clips you download from Videvo will be licensed in a variety of different ways: some you may not be able to use for specific types of projects. There’s a complete breakdown here of all the difference license types , but here’s a quick summary:
- Videvo Attribution License allows you to use a clip for free, but you have to credit the original author.
- Clips with a Creative Commons 3.0 can also be used for free, with credit, and may be remixed or adapted.
- Public Domain licenses mean that they’re yours to do with as you wish!
Check out the individual usage rights for each video for more details.
Pexels began as a free photo site, but has since added a large library of free HD and 4K stock videos.
With Pexels’ license, all photos and videos can be used for free, and without attribution (though giving credit to the videographer is certainly appreciated). Videos are OK to be edited and modified however you like.
Explore their daily “trending free stock videos” to find the most in-demand stock videos… like this soothing footage of hair being braided.
Videezy has a large collection of video clips that are royalty-free for personal and commercial use, but always make sure to check each clip’s specific licensing info to make sure your favorite footage is available to use.
Most require that you credit Videezy.com when using their footage. However, you can also buy credits that will allow you to use footage without attribution.
There’s a wide variety of high-quality video clips to choose from, in both HD and 4K resolution. When searching for videos, any results marked with “Pro” are premium clips that are only available by paying with credits.
Life of Vids
Life of Vids is a collection of free stock videos, clips, and loops from Leeroy, an advertising agency in Montreal, Canada. There are no copyright restrictions, but redistribution on other sites is limited to 10 videos. (If you feel so inclined, they welcome you to buy them a beer or give them a shoutout on your website.)
New videos are added weekly, and they’ve got a beautiful collection of free stock images you can check out as well.
Started by entrepreneurs and filmmakers who needed good-looking video for their products, Coverr is intended to fill that same need for other up-and-coming brands: a little gift to the world, if you will.
Now, it has thousands of free videos, which have been downloaded more than five million times. All the videos are in HD, and available to download in MP4 format.
No sign-up needed, no attribution required, just instant downloads of free video footage. Use these sweet clips in commercial video projects or personal ones, and copy or modify them to your heart’s content.
Splitshire was created by web designer Daniel Nanescu, who wanted to offer his photos and videos free for personal and commercial use. The fact that these photos and videos were all created by one person makes them more unique than content from other stock sites.
The videos are primarily drone footage of beautiful outdoor scenes, and you can download them by clicking on the title below each video. You’re free to use them across all your social media channels, but you can’t sell them or use them in projects with inappropriate content such as violence, racism, or discrimination.
Each month, Clipstill makes a handful of its web-quality “cinemagraphs” available for free download, so it’s worth checking out and stocking up for future use. You never know when you’re going to need some footage of a hot air balloon down the road, right?
If you don’t want to wait around for just the right footage to come along (and have a few bucks to spare), you can also sign up for unlimited downloads for a one-time $49 fee.
Okay, it’s not a collection of thousands or millions of clips, but maybe there’s something among the hundreds of open-source 4K royalty-free stock video clips here that will tickle your fancy.
Formerly known as Stock Footage for Free, Dareful provides stock footage that’s licensed under Creative Commons 4.0 , which means you’re free to share and adapt as long as you give appropriate credit and indicate if any changes were made.
It’s all shot by a videographer named Joel Holland. Why’s he giving it all away? We may never know, but we can watch this time-lapse footage of ominous clouds as we ponder.
There are new videos added every few weeks to the Vidsplay collection, which makes it a great resource for keeping your social video content fresh. And since it’s been around since 2010, there’s a huge backlog of older content to pursue, too.
You can download and use any video without paying royalties, although you do need to provide attribution.
What can you stock your content coffers with over at Mixkit? We’re talking stock video clips, sound effects, music and even video templates. It’s a library of resources provided by a company called Envato, a subscription service for creative assets, but this batch is free, free, free, with new content being added every week, with no attribution required.
Mazwai describes its free stock footage and moving images as “hand-picked,” though it doesn’t really specify by who. But whatever mysterious forces are choosing the videos that wind up here for download, you’re going to get high-definition content that’s either licensed under the Creative Commons 3.0 license (use for whatever, just make sure to credit the author) or under the Mazwai License (use for whatever, no credit required).

Video Tutorial: How to Connect a Shotgun Microphone to a PC
The shotgun microphone is an essential filmmaking tool, but how can you connect one directly to a PC? The shotgun microphone is a staple of the filmmaking, television, and sports industries. They are easily distinguished by their elongated, tubular design. If you ever see a sound recordist holding a boom pole with a sound blimp on the end of it, you can be almost certain it’s holding a shotgun microphone. Shotgun microphones offer unique advantages, particularly their exceptional directionality and off-axis sound rejection. This feature allows for placing the mic further from the source while still capturing clear, rich audio…
How to Create Subtitles in Adobe Premiere Pro
In this video tutorial, we’ll cover how to add subtitles to your project in Adobe Premiere Pro. In today’s social media landscape, ensuring your video contains proper and legible subtitles is a must in order to retain viewers. Let’s walk through the steps on how you can simply add subtitles to your video edit in Adobe Premiere Pro. What Are Subtitles? Subtitles are a form of text on screen that helps the viewer read what is being said, rather than solely listening to the dialogue. Subtitles usually transcribe what the subjects on screen are saying, word for word, and sometimes…
Has RunwayML’s Motion Brush Killed After Effects?
RunwayML’s Motion Brush is a fantastic AI animation tool. Here’s how it works. Several months ago, we produced a tutorial on how you could generate an image like you might get from Midjourney or Dall-E and then use After Effects to animate the image as if we have a living and breathing scene. The results were pretty great. Now, in true AI fashion, RunWay ML, which we have featured on the channel many times, has a new feature called Motion Brush, which, by all accounts, allows us to animate similar properties that we introduced within After Effects. So, let’s see…
Videvo was created with one simple mission: to make stock footage more affordable, and in doing so empower creators worldwide to produce awesome visual content. Originally started as a free stock footage service, we've added sound effects and music tracks into the mix too, as well as an extended collection of 1.5M+ premium stock assets.
We only work with a select number of trusted providers for our premium content, and we give each a bigger cut of the pie, so that earnings are not diluted across thousands of contributors. By working with fewer, more well established contributors, we can also be sure that the content has been sourced responsibly and is safe to use. Furthermore, our content is provided in 1080p HD minimum resolution, and most of our content is now provided in 4K.

Stock videos and stock animations can be used creatively in every commercial or personal video production / audiovisual project. Stock videos can be easily spliced and added to the main content seamlessly with most good video-editing/-compositing softwares in the market such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, iMovie, DaVinci Resolve.
Stock animations are pre-animated video clips that come with a license that gives the buyer permission to use them. These animations can be graphic animations, animated backgrounds and video loops.
As animation projects are usually tedious and effortful to create, stock animations help creators save time and hassle with pre-made video clips that can be added into the timeline easily.
Model and property releases are signed documents which inform that the people or property (trademarks, brands, works of art or buildings) featured in the stock image or video clip are safe to use. To use a stock image / stock video in your commercial project all you need to know is that a release has been signed - the actual copy of the release is not required.
Stock content with signed model release and property release are marked accordingly on the product page description.
Royalty-free describes intellectual property that can be used without having to pay royalties. Once a one-time fee is paid for a royalty-free license, the buyer is free to use it without having to pay recurring fees to the intellectual property owner.
While a royalty-free license gives a person the right to use it, the intellectual property still belongs to the original owner. Anyone who buys a royalty-free license is entitled to use the same content. In other words, royalty-free content is not exclusive.
However, there are many perks of using royalty-free content. A buyer does not need to attribute the owner and each content can be used as many times as desired in as many projects as possible.
Stock videos, also known as b-rolls, are professionally shot footage that come with a license that gives the buyer permission to use them. Video creators often use stock videos as they save time and effort required in shooting original content.
To find the most suitable stock video footage, search from a wide variety of 4K videos, green screen footage, pre-keyed footage, and various special effects clips on our site.

Sora: OpenAI launches tool that instantly creates video from text
Model from ChatGPT maker ‘simulates physical world in motion’ up to a minute long based on users’ subject and style instructions
OpenAI revealed a tool on Thursday that can generate videos from text prompts.
The new model, nicknamed Sora after the Japanese word for “sky”, can produce realistic footage up to a minute long that adheres to a user’s instructions on both subject matter and style. According to a company blogpost, the model is also able to create a video based on a still image or extend existing footage with new material.
“We’re teaching AI to understand and simulate the physical world in motion, with the goal of training models that help people solve problems that require real-world interaction,” the blogpost reads.
One video included among several initial examples from the company was based on the prompt: “A movie trailer featuring the adventures of the 30-year-old space man wearing a red wool knitted motorcycle helmet, blue sky, salt desert, cinematic style, shot on 35mm film, vivid colors.”
The company announced it had opened access to Sora to a few researchers and video creators. The experts would “red team” the product – test it for susceptibility to skirt OpenAI’s terms of service, which prohibit “extreme violence, sexual content, hateful imagery, celebrity likeness, or the IP of others”, per the company’s blogpost. The company is only allowing limited access to researchers, visual artists and film-makers, though CEO Sam Altman responded to users’ prompts on Twitter after the announcement with video clips he said were made by Sora. The videos bear a watermark to show they were made by AI.

The company debuted the still image generator Dall-E in 2021 and generative AI chatbot ChatGPT in November 2022, which quickly accrued 100 million users. Other AI companies have debuted video generation tools, though those models have only been able to produce a few seconds of footage that often bears little relation to their prompts. Google and Meta have said they are in the process of developing generative video tools, though they have not released them to the public. On Wednesday, it announced an experiment with adding deeper memory to ChatGPT so that it could remember more of its users’ chats.
https://t.co/uCuhUPv51N pic.twitter.com/nej4TIwgaP — Sam Altman (@sama) February 15, 2024
OpenAI did not disclose how much footage was used to train Sora or where the training videos may have originated, other than telling the New York Times that the corpus contained videos that were both publicly available and licensed from copyright owners. The company has been sued multiple times for alleged copyright infringement in the training of its generative AI tools, which digest gargantuan amounts of material scraped from the internet and imitate the images or text contained in those datasets.

Depending on your product, this account can be a personal Microsoft account (such as Hotmail.com, Outlook.com, Live.com), or a work or school account assigned by someone in your organization.
Note: Some products purchased through an employee Microsoft Workplace Discount Program (formerly known as Home Use Program) benefit or volume license versions (managed by an organization's IT department) might not require an account. The information below doesn't apply to these Office versions or Microsoft 365 subscriptions.
Sign in to the dashboard for your account
Open a desktop app like Word or Excel, or go to Microsoft365.com .
Tip: You might be prompted to sign in. Make sure to sign in with the account associated with Microsoft 365 or Office. If you can’t remember which email address you associated with your subscription or Office product, see I can't remember the Microsoft account I use with Microsoft 365 .
From the header, select your Account manager .
Depending on your account type, select My Microsoft account or View account .
Your account dashboard is displayed and what you can do next depends on if you're signed in with a Microsoft account , or a work or school account .
Select the tab below for the type of account you're signed in with.
If you selected My Microsoft account , the Microsoft account dashboard will open. This is where you manage your Microsoft account and any Microsoft products associated with this account.
On the Microsoft account dashboard, select Services & subscriptions to view all Microsoft products associated with this account.
For non-subscription versions of Office (such as Office 2013 and later): Find your Office product and select Install . Follow the prompts to install or reinstall the desktop apps.
For Microsoft 365 Family or Personal subscriptions: Select Install premium Microsoft 365 apps and follow the prompts to install or reinstall the desktop apps.
On the Microsoft 365 subscription tab, select Manage . From here you can:
Renew your subscription with a prepaid code or card
Cancel a subscription
For Microsoft 365 Family subscriptions, you can start sharing your subscription, and add or remove people you're already sharing with. If you're not the subscription owner, you can see who's sharing Microsoft 365 with you, or choose to leave the subscription.
If you selected View account , the My Account dashboard for your work or school account will open. Here you can:
Install and manage your apps. On the Office apps card, select Manage , and select Install to install or reinstall the latest desktop apps, or other apps such as Project or Visio. (An install option is available as long as your admin assigned you a license and gave you permission to self-install.)
Manage your devices.
View your subscriptions, and any other licenses assigned to you.
Note: For Microsoft 365 admins only If you're the Microsoft 365 admin in your organization, you control what you want your users to have access to. Go to the Microsoft 365 Admin help center for more information about setting up users.
