Defining And Measuring Academic Performance of Hei Students-A Critical Review

2021, Turkish Journal of Computer and Mathematics Education

The significance accorded to the amorphous concept of Academic Performance of students is immense, owing to the mere reason that better performances academically set the prospect for the better future of any nation. Likewise, understanding the integrities of the concept holds a great connotation. The current paper aims to present a review of the various definitions of "academic performance" along with the factors perceived to have an effect on the academic performance of students belonging to Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Additionally, an effort has also been made to gain an insight into the reliability of "Grade Point Average" (GPA) as a method for measuring academic performance.

In this paper, the PLS-PM model has been estimated as to directly and indirectly identify factors that influence academic performance of the first year students at NUL. Sample used to utilise the task was 46. The estimated PLS-PM model was found stable and satisfying the SEM conditions. Several measure were established and found that 63% of variation of OWM is been explained by all those factors that are found to be significant. Also, seven factors were retained with factor loadings in the range of 0.4 to 0.81. Furthermore, the results of the discriminant analysis revealed that, 54% of female students are enrolled to the university while only 46% is for male students each year. 1. Introduction In all countries of the world, education is the most important sector of living; hence the major resources are plunged into it as an investment to human resource and the development of the country. The educational performance is influenced by various components including admission points, socio economic status and school foundation. Acato (2006) [1] ; Geiser and Santelices (2007) [18] all contend that admission points which are a reflection of the past performance has some impact on future performance of students. Tertiary institutions in Austria have found that a selection rank based on a student's overall performance is a predictor of success for most courses. As documented by Berthelot, Ross, and Tremblay (2001) [5] , the study agrees with the literature that admission points really distress the performance of university students and that is why the basic university entry admission points is a diploma points or mature age points. However, Berg (2012) [4] defines education as the conveyance of learning, aptitudes and information from teachers to students is lacking to capture what is truly vital about being and getting to be educated. Learning is taken to mean any change in behavior, knowledge, understanding, skills or capabilities which the greenhorn retains which cannot be ascribed simply to the physical growth or to the development of inherited behavior patterns. In the current study, two techniques are used to check two different issues. The first technique is the use of the structural equation model (SEM) through employment of the Partial Least Square Path Model (PLS-PM) to identify the factors that influences the academic performance of first year students at the National University of Lesotho (NUL) directly and indirectly. And lastly, in assessing the enrollment rate at the university, the K th nearest neighbor discriminant analysis with the discriminating factor as the sex structure of the student is engaged.

The main objective of this study is to identify factors affecting the academic performance of undergraduate students of Raya University (RU), Maichew, Ethiopia. In order to achieve the stated objectives of the research a stratified sampling was used to select 146 students from 17 departments of the university. To analyze the collected data and to investigate factors affecting the academic performance of undergraduate students the ordinary list square (OLS) and Tobit regression methods were used. The findings reviled the existence of significance relationship between the student’s university cumulative grade point average (UCGPA) and preparatory CGPA, gender deference, place of origin, college of the student, mismatch between teaching and learning style and student’s expectation about their future job opportunity. The above independent variables are statistically significant and they are the major determinants of students’ academic performance. However, variables like, age, study hour, entrance exam result, participation in cooperative learning program, mother’s educational level and department choice were insignificant. Finally, the study recommends that Raya University, the Ethiopian ministry of education, students and students’ families, policy makers and other concerned body should work hard towards improving students’ academic performance, by considering aforementioned determinant factors.

Ranking tertiary institutions provides a good motivation, since it engenders healthy competition among stakeholders to strive for excellence. The issue of concern now might be finding a fair measure of the various criteria for this purpose. When institutions are endowed differently, then one fair criterion of assessing them would be to find an algorithm to measure their academic impart on the students by the level of output during the tertiary education. At the moment, there is the GPA which measures the output of the students during this period. What remains is to find a similar measure – a default estimate of students’ output, using their in-take grades, so that the difference between the CGPA and the in-take grade index (SIGI) will provide some measure of the level of impact. A departure, positively or negatively, from the SIGI will determine how well the student was affected, giving the prevailing conditions specific to the institution. This is the objective of the study. The study proposed an algorithm using the procedures of performing principal component factor analysis to obtained weights specific to the six subject areas used to admit students into tertiary institutions, by subjecting the entire data of a group of students to factor analysis procedures. These weights are subsequently used in the final formula to compute the SIGI, after testing and ascertaining the fitness of the factor model. To test the algorithm, records of some 618 past students of Ho Polytechnic, taken randomly from the past three academic years, were used. It was revealed that the level of output during tertiary education has dropped or increased marginally than those who had the same increased tremendously. The model could be of great help to regulatory authorities in assessing tertiary institutions, so that appropriate intervention could be made for better academic performance. It could also be used as admission criteria when the grades of group of students are analysed to determine who to admit. Also, after studying the trend for some time within an institution, certain class of students could be given the chance if there is evidence from the model that they can do better when admitted. The model is hereby recommended to stakeholders in the educational front. The focus of subsequent studies would be to apply similar robust methods, used here, to diagnose the current GPA system as a measure of the student’s academic performance in terms of its robustness, validity, fairness and accuracy. This is in line with proposing an alternate grading system which satisfies the criteria of robustness, validity, fairness and accuracy. The acquisition of numeracy and literacy skills is a condition for better life and an important indicator to human development index. However where society academic performance outcomes becomes unsatisfactory, parents becomes disoriented and hence it becomes a concern. The study focused on rate and trends of academic performance index at secondary level. The descriptive and causal comparative designs were used in this study. The sample of the study comprised 85 head teachers’, 765 teachers’, 3349 students and one DEO. Questionnaires’ and interview guides were used. The study showed that trend of academic performance index was fluctuating while for any academic year only a paltry 5 percent gained direct entry to university, 30 percent had to look for options in parallel programs while majority relied on other options to further their studies. Further observation indicate that mathematics had very unsatisfactory outcomes, sciences and languages had unsatisfactory performance while art...

Academic performance has always been associated to the evaluation tests results , which are those corresponding to student's IQ, and leaving aside other personal characteristics. Among such characteristics, the importance of emotional intelligence is worth highlighting (management, facilitation, understanding and perception), dimensions associated to personality traits (emotional impulsiveness, respect for others, sociability, negotiating skills, openness to experience, self-confidence) and, of course, the meaning of life, since the creation of meaning is related to each person's individual development, in hand with other processes such as identity, relationships and life goals. The objective of this project is to study the role of these dimensions in the learning process and development of students, which may predict future performance. To do so, we have conducted an observational study with 217 psychology students at the Francisco de Vitoria University, which identifies the importance of each characteristic relative to academic performance. The results show that the aforementioned theoretical models are isolated, making it necessary to include other variables, such as the meaning of life and emotional intelligence to explain academic performance.
