Data Analyst Cover Letter: 2024 Sample and Guide

Write a winning cover letter to help you get those data analyst job interviews.

[Featured image] A woman sits on a couch, holding a white mug, as she types a data analyst cover letter on her laptop.

Your cover letter often serves as your introduction to a potential employer. While not all recruiters or hiring managers will take the time to read your letter, a well-written cover letter could mean the difference between a hiring manager looking at your resume and considering an interview or moving on to the next candidate for those who do. For a role you’re passionate about, it’s worth the extra effort.

If you’re looking for your first job as a data analyst, whether you’re just out of school or switching careers, you may be wondering what to include in your cover letter. Even if you don’t have previous experience in a data analyst role, you likely still bring transferable skills that can benefit you (and your employer) in your work as a data analyst.

In this article, we'll walk through a sample cover letter for an entry-level data analyst job, then go step by step through what you should include in each paragraph of your own cover letter. We’ll wrap up with some tips and best practices to make your cover letter stand out.

Entry-level data analyst cover letter sample

Before we get into the specifics of what to include in your cover letter, it may be helpful to look at an example. Feel free to use this sample cover letter as a template to customize your own version.

Sample Data Analyst Cover Letter

[Today’s date]

[Hiring manager’s name]

[Company address]

[Company phone number]

[Hiring manager email]

Dear Ms./Mr. [Manager’s name] ,

My name is Cindy Liu, and I’m a tech-savvy manager looking to flex my talents to identify new growth strategies for Corelight as a Junior Data Analyst. I’ve always been fascinated by numbers, and working in data analytics has been a long-term goal of mine. My career in the restaurant business has taught me to think strategically about problems and identify solutions. I believe this experience has prepared me for Corelight’s Junior Data Analyst role.

Your job posting mentioned that you’re looking for an analyst with experience in SQL, proficiency in a statistical programming language, and strong time management skills. During my previous role as a restaurant manager, I had to multitask to balance the needs of the company (revenue) and the customer (service and quality standard). I’ve also been pursuing my passion for data, both at work and in my spare time. Over the past year, I’ve been able to achieve the following:

Automated repetitive restaurant payroll and accounting tasks with Python, freeing up three hours per week

Completed a case study using point-of-sales data from the restaurant to optimize our menu and pricing, leading to a revenue increase of 10 percent

Completed the Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate, which included extensive coursework in both SQL and R

I’m thrilled at the opportunity to use these experiences to fuel data-driven decisions at Corelight, and I’m keen to continue developing my skill set on the job. I am available for a Zoom call or in-person meeting to discuss how I can help Corelight with improving market product performance through data.

Thank you for your consideration,

Cindy Liu, Data Analyst

What to include in a data analyst cover letter

Now that you’ve seen an example of what a data analyst cover letter might look like, let’s take a closer look at what to include in your own cover letter. Cover letters should typically fit on a single page and include three key paragraphs.

TIP: Complement your resume with additional information.

Resist the temptation to rehash the same bullet list of accomplishments. Instead, use this as an opportunity to highlight what the reader should look for in your resume. If your resume lists Python as a skill, your cover letter is your chance to tell a story about how you’ve applied it to solve a problem.

First paragraph: Introduce yourself

Begin your letter by addressing the hiring manager by name if you have that information. Your first paragraph is your opportunity to introduce yourself and introduce the value you can bring to the company. In this paragraph, be sure to state clearly:

Who you are

What position you’re applying for

What company you’re applying to

Why you’re a great fit for this specific role

This is also an excellent place to point out your enthusiasm for the company, highlight a mutual connection you have, express your passion for data, and explain why you’re interested in a career change.

TIP: Focus on the positive.

Don’t apologize for your lack of job experience. Highlight the skills and talents you do have, and express your enthusiasm for learning and growing.

Second paragraph: Relevant skills and achievements

The second paragraph is typically the most important part of your letter. This is where you connect the requirements from the job description to your skill set and unique experiences.

Take a look at the job listing and pick out three to four skills or requirements that you feel you can best highlight. Think about a specific accomplishment or experience that demonstrates each skill. These could be academic accomplishments or achievements from a previous job, even if it’s unrelated to data analysis.

For example, strong communication skills are often required for data analysts, who are tasked with presenting their findings to management and stakeholders. If you’ve given presentations as part of a university class or in a previous role, call out this experience. How many people attended? What were the results of the presentation?

Back up each accomplishment with data or metrics, when possible.

TIP: Include keywords from the job listing.

Using the exact phrasing of skills and qualifications from the job description can help applicant tracking systems identify your application as a good match. Use both long form and acronym versions where appropriate, for example Structured Query Language and SQL.

These data analyst skills , including SQL, R or Python, and machine learning, are the most in demand by Coursera’s community of 87 million global learners (as of December 2021). If you have experience with one or more of these, mention it in your cover letter, especially if they match the job description.

Third paragraph: Wrap up and call to action

The final paragraph of your cover letter should summarize why you’re the best fit for the job. More importantly, it should include a call to action. Express that you’d like to discuss the role further. Offer some availability for an interview. Ask about next steps.

The idea here is to get the hiring manager thinking about the next step in the hiring process with you as a part of it.

TIP: Proofread.

Data analytics requires attention to detail, a skill you’ll want to demonstrate in your cover letter. It’s also a good idea to verify whether your cover letter should be sent as an attachment, pasted into the body of an email, or uploaded to a website. Some companies have specific requirements for subject line formatting and attachment naming conventions—check before you send.

Analyst Cover Letter (With Examples)

When you write a cover letter for a position as a market research analyst , take advantage of the opportunity to highlight your skills, passions, and personality, as well as your accomplishments at your previous positions.

As a market research analyst , your employers care deeply about the results of your past efforts because they want to know that you’re going to be effective at your job if they hire you. It doesn’t matter if you’re good at data analytics if you can’t use them to create recommendations and improve the company’s performance.

While you likely included many examples of these on your resume , your cover letter is your opportunity to describe them in more detail so that hiring managers better understand what you’ve done in the past and what you’ll be able to do for them in the future.

In this article, you’ll learn the elements of an effective cover letter that you need to include in yours as well as a sample letter that you can use as a reference point for your own writing.

Parts of a Market Research Analyst Cover Letter

No matter what kind of job you’re applying for, your cover letter should include these elements:

Your contact information

The recipient’s information

Opening paragraph

Body paragraphs

Closing lines

You can see each of these elements in the sample cover letter included in this article. Keep reading to find out more about how to write the main paragraphs of your cover letter.

Market Research Analyst Cover Letter Opening

The opening paragraph of your cover letter is your opportunity to catch the reader ’s attention. You can do this by mentioning a statistic about your work, something you’re passionate about, or your unique combination of professional experiences.

You can make this even more effective by choosing an example or fun fact that reflects something in the job description or the company’s mission, vision, and values. If it isn’t true, don’t say it, but if, for example, the job description you’re applying for says applicants need to have “a passion for data,” and you really do have a passion for data, talk about that.

For example, you could write something like,

“As someone with five years of experience as a market research analyst and a passion for numbers and data of all kinds, I was excited to see the market research analyst job opening at Gretzky Enterprises. I believe that the combination of my experience, passion, and analysis skills make me a great candidate for this position .”

You can get more creative if you want to too, just make sure that you’re matching your tone to the company. If in doubt, err on the side of professionalism and formality.

Search For Analyst Jobs

Market research analyst cover letter body.

When you’re writing the body of your cover letter, it’s important to remember that you’re trying to sell yourself as not only a good candidate but also as a valuable addition to the organization. After all, the real point of submitting an application, resume, and cover letter is to convince the organization to hire you because you’ll help further the company’s goals.

There are a few different ways you can do this:

Detail the results of your past efforts. Since your work as a market research analyst does result in a quantifiable increase or decrease in the project’s or company’s performance, it should be easy for you to find specific examples of your work and the end result of it.

Not only that, but it’s also vital that you include these examples ( unless you don’t have relevant job experience ) since hiring managers will become doubtful of your qualifications if you have nothing to show for them. Plus, they want to hire an effective employee, so make sure you show them that you’ll create positive results for them.

Talk about how you align with the company’s values. It takes a lot of energy and resources for organizations to train new employees in the technical skills they need to be successful, but it takes even more to create workers who will further the company’s culture .

Read through the company’s values and if you see any that you align with, say so. You’ll be that much more attractive to hiring managers if they can see that you’re already on board with their mission and culture.

At the very least, though, you should talk about what piqued your interest in the job, whether that’s the chance to use a particular skill, to work at a company you’ve admired for a long time, or to grow in your professional abilities.

Share your unique combination of skills. Especially if you don’t have much work experience or are entering a new field , your cover letter is your opportunity to explain how the work experience you have can apply to this new position.

Even if you have experience in the field, talk about how your different roles taught you separate skills that, when combined, give you a skill set unique from other candidates .

Here’s an example of some body paragraphs in a cover letter:

“One of my greatest accomplishments during my time as a market research analyst is when one of my projects resulted in a 10% increase in sales for the company over a two-year period. While I worked on this project, I was able to work closely with my marketing and customer service colleagues as well as a few executive leaders. This experience helped me hone my communication skills so that now I can put complex data into easy-to-understand reports and PowerPoint presentations. It also taught me how to interact and work with a team with diverse expertise to ensure we meet all of our individual goals. I thrive when I get to collect and analyze data and then apply my conclusions in order to solve a problem. When I saw that this position at Gretzky Enterprises would require a lot of that, I knew I had to apply. I’ve long admired your company and the value it puts on innovation and excellence, and I would be honored to be a part of furthering that vision.”

Market Research Analyst Cover Letter Closing Lines

When you’re wrapping up your cover letter, it’s a good idea to include a call to action for the reader. This is usually a request to discuss the position further, but you can also mention talking more about your qualifications or the company’s goals.

Whatever you choose, though, always include a note of thanks at the end of your letter. Even just a simple “ Thank you for your consideration ” will go a long way in leaving a positive impression.

Finally, wrap up with a professional “Sincerely,” followed by your full name. If you’re writing a formal business letter , sign your name and then type it beneath. If you’re writing an email, include your email address and phone number in your signature.

Here’s an example of what this could look like:

“I would love to discuss this position with you further. Please give me a call or send me an email at your earliest convenience. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, Winston McIntyre (Handwritten Signature) Winston McIntyre”

If you’re sending an email, your signature will look something like this,

“Sincerely, Winston McIntyre 345-678-9100 [email protected] ”

How to Write a Business Analyst Cover Letter

BA sits at desk with books and files with hands in the air wondering how to write a cover letter

Stay tuned as we walk you through the three steps to help you create the best cover letter for a business analyst role.

application letter of analyst

Step 1: Read the job description carefully

If you’ve prepared your resume, then you know the importance of tailoring it to the specific  business analyst job ad . This is also true for your cover letter. Research the company and the role. Use this info to ensure your cover letter addresses the unique needs mentioned in the job listing. This will benefit you when you’re facing a slew of  business analyst interview questions .

Let your research be the foundation that demonstrates your interest in the role and company. What does the job ad tell you about an initiative the role needs to handle or a gap that needs to be filled?

  • Talk about how your commitment and skills will facilitate their progress.
  • Discuss your training, background, or certifications related to business analysis and/or project management.

Take advantage of anything in the job description where you can highlight your abilities and experience for the specific business analyst role.

application letter of analyst

Step 2: Hone in on your business analyst achievements

Focus on specifics from the job listing that shows you can give the company what it needs in a business analyst. But, avoid repeating skills or experience you’ve already provided in your resume. Your cover letter should be fresh , containing additional information employers can’t glean from your resume.

Use your business analyst cover letter to share your achievements or progress, which aren’t as easily incorporated into a resume. Since a resume must be succinct and objective, you can, for instance, use your cover letter to point out something you did that may not have objective measurements.

  • The cover letter is a good place to expound on examples of your  soft skills  that are not always appropriate for a resume that demands your attention to more technical skills.
  • This also offers another opportunity to customize your letter to show your knowledge of the company and its specific needs.

Step 3: Convey the right tone

While your cover letter is a good place to describe skills and successes you might not be able to explore in-depth in a resume, do  keep your letter to less than one page. Limit it to a few of your best examples. Eliminate wordiness and keep it professional and sincere, avoiding pleasantries and brown-nosing.

Avoid clichés, colloquialisms, and filler words. This  is  a business position you’re applying for, after all. It’s okay to be somewhat conversational—maybe use a contraction here and there depending on the company—but be professional.

Avoid clichés, colloquialisms, and filler words. This  is  a business position you’re applying for, after all.

Not only do you need to revise, edit, and condense your cover letter text (keeping it to one page or less), but it’s also critical to proofread. Go a step further and invite others to review your work. Accept feedback, consider it, and make the needed edits.

Once you’ve completed the above steps, save your file with a logical and professional name (like MWatkins.AgileBA.CoverLetter.2023), and be confident that you have a solid cover letter to send to your prospective employer.

How to address a cover letter for a business analyst

Your contact info: When using a template, carefully fill in the letterhead to match the job role. Don’t miss revisions to any of the generic text or forget to include your contact information (like your name, email, and phone number).

  • Formatting:  Creating a letter from scratch? Including your address is acceptable and typical. Many cover letter templates will prominently display your name on the letterhead; however, a basic but professional block letter should omit your name as it’ll be obvious on the signature line.

Date:  Hopefully you’re writing your cover letter well in advance of submitting it, but don’t forget to edit the date to reflect when you actually send the letter.

  • Formatting:  Use the full date, e.g. January 13, 2023.

Inside address:   If at all possible , use the name of a specific person. Include their title, full company name, and mailing address for the person/company.

  • Formatting:  Each part of the address should be on a new line. Double space between the inside address and greeting.

Kenneth Heaps Chief Information Officer Latham & Watkins LLP 1271 W 50th Street New York, NY 10020

Greeting:  Start on the right foot with your new employer, so avoid a generic greeting (AKA a salutation) like:

  • Dear Manager,
  • Dear Hiring Department,
  • To Whom it May Concern:

It’s often a challenge to sleuth out the name of the hiring manager for many jobs. Many companies use staffing agencies or their HR departments.

Do some detective work, look at the company website, and see if you can find the department you’re applying to, or, better yet, if you can figure out who the hiring manager is. A specific name leaves an impression (a positive one). The extra time you spend hunting down a name does make a difference:

  • Dear Mr. Heaps:
  • Dear Mr. Hawkinson:
  • Formatting:  Use formal letter etiquette by using a colon at the end of the greeting. Comma usage is most likely too casual for a BA, but it truly depends on the company’s culture.

How to write a cover letter for the business analyst job

Body:  Your business analyst cover letter should have three to four short paragraphs showing your interest in the position, demonstrating your business analysis skills, and conveying enthusiasm to discuss the role. Let’s explore this in detail:

  • Formatting:  For the best presentation, use single-spacing for all lines with double-spacing between paragraphs in the body of your cover letter.

Opening paragraph:  The objective of the first paragraph is simple. Speak to your interest in the job and your experience at a high level (years of experience, profession, certifications, education, etc.) leveraging what’s relevant to the role and company.

It’s common to see opening sentences like this one:

I saw your need for a business analyst on Indeed, and I believe I’d be a good fit.

Does that grab your attention, though? It makes us yawn.

Stating where you saw the job listing for the business analyst role is unnecessary. They know where they posted the job, and they certainly know what the job is for, so consider something like this:

Eczema is a condition I am all too familiar with, and I would love to dedicate my career to fighting chronic illness at TrialSpark. Not only will I bring my passion for the company mission, but I believe my experience aligns perfectly with what you need in an Agile business analyst.

This makes a strong statement and clearly demonstrates that you’ve done your homework and researched the company and its industry. You also display interest in the role and offer valuable experience. Tying a personal connection to business objectives shows that you’re serious about the job and confident in your expertise.

Paragraphs 2-3:  Strive to make the content in your cover letter different from your resume. Focus each paragraph on a single achievement. Include short (two to three sentences), detailed, and quantifiable (if at all possible) descriptions of how you benefited past employers.

Take advantage of the third paragraph if you can as it will give you another chance to impress upon the reader how valuable your business analyst skills will be to the company. Use factual evidence of your credentials and achievements.

Closing paragraph:  This is your final opportunity to leave a great impression on your potential employer and land an interview. Avoid clichés, trite phrases, or something like this:

I feel I am the best candidate for this business analyst position, and I look forward to speaking with you soon.

Nope. Boring and indistinguishable from hundreds of other cover letters. If you use something similar, they’ll suspect you’re using a form letter or don’t care.

Be creative and original. Give employers something unique that shows how your values and qualifications align with the organization’s needs. Leverage your enclosures to save space and give them additional information. Convince employers you’re not merely looking for a job (even if you are).

Use your last sentence or two as a call to action. Indicate your anticipation of a follow-up or interview. For example:

My keen attention to detail, in-depth understanding of enterprise systems, Agile expertise, and passion for creating innovative solutions will equip me to help TrialSpark perform more clinical trials and, ultimately, improve the quality of life for those with chronic illnesses. It would be an honor to grow with TrialSpark, and I’m eager to discuss the next steps with you at your earliest convenience. Thank you for your consideration.

How to close a cover letter for a business analyst

Signature:  Don’t forget to say “thank you” if you haven’t already done so in your closing paragraph. Always use a professional closing with your formal (legal) name.

  • Formatting:  If you print hard copies of your business analyst cover letter, quadruple space in this section to have room to sign your name. Use blue or black ink.

Thank you for your time and consideration,

Bailey Hough

Enclosure(s):  It’s important to include this line because it indicates that more follows your letter. Typical things to include are your current  business analyst resume , application form, technical certifications, and possibly a reference letter, depending on the requirements in the  business analyst job listing .

  • Formatting:  Use the singular or plural form of “enclosure” depending on how many things you’re enclosing.

Agile Business Analyst Resume

Need a resume to pair with your agile business analyst cover letter?

Expanding on the achievements you listed in your business analyst resume is a great idea, but your cover letter should offer a fresh perspective. Talk about the aspects of your achievements that were difficult to quantify, forcing you to omit them from your resume. For instance, if you’ve refined your talent for resolving conflicts between stakeholders and getting them on the same page, dive into the details of your impact.

The “right” tone is something that varies for every business, so for each business analyst role you apply to, try and get a read on how laid back the company culture is and match it. As a general rule of thumb, though, try to be succinct and maintain a tone of professionalism while keeping it conversational enough that it doesn’t come across as stiff or like a legal document.

Show that you’ve taken this application seriously by mentioning the company’s core mission, values, and products and how they resonate with your skills and experience. If being data-driven is one of the core values of a company you’re applying to, highlight how this has been one of the driving forces of your career, and cite examples where you’ve waited for the data to support your decisions before making them.

The best way to start a Financial Analyst cover letter is by grabbing the reader's attention with a strong introduction. Begin by stating your name and the position you're applying for. Then, briefly mention your current role, your relevant qualifications, and a key achievement that demonstrates your capabilities as a Financial Analyst. This not only shows your qualifications but also your ability to deliver results. For example: "As a dedicated Financial Analyst with over five years of experience in driving profitable business decisions at XYZ Corp, I have consistently exceeded performance expectations and I am now eager to bring my skills to ABC Company."

Financial Analysts should end a cover letter by summarizing their interest in the role, restating their qualifications, and expressing enthusiasm for the potential opportunity to contribute to the company. It's important to keep the ending professional and concise. Here's an example: "In closing, I am excited about the possibility of bringing my unique blend of skills and experience to your team. I am confident that my analytical abilities and passion for financial strategy would make a significant contribution to your organization. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss how I can add value to your team. Thank you for considering my application." Always remember to include a professional sign-off like "Sincerely" or "Best regards," followed by your name. This ending reinforces your interest, highlights your suitability, and leaves the door open for further discussion, which is key to landing an interview.

A Financial Analyst's cover letter should ideally be about one page long. This length is sufficient to introduce yourself, explain why you're interested in the role, and highlight your most relevant skills and experiences without overwhelming the reader. Remember, hiring managers often have to go through numerous applications, so it's important to keep your cover letter concise and to the point. Be sure to focus on quality over quantity, emphasizing your most relevant achievements and skills that make you a strong fit for the role of a Financial Analyst.

Writing a cover letter with no direct experience as a Financial Analyst can seem challenging, but there are ways to showcase your relevant skills and enthusiasm for the role. Here's how: 1. Research: Understand the role of a Financial Analyst and the skills required. This will help you identify transferable skills from your past experiences. 2. Start Strong: Begin your cover letter with a strong introduction. Express your interest in the role and the company. Mention where you found the job posting. 3. Highlight Transferable Skills: Even if you don't have direct experience, you may have transferable skills from your education or previous jobs. Highlight your analytical skills, attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and proficiency in financial software or Excel. 4. Use Examples: Provide examples of when you've used these skills. This could be during your studies, internships, or any other work experience. Be specific about what you did and the impact it had. 5. Show Enthusiasm: Show your passion for finance and your willingness to learn. Employers value candidates who are eager to grow and adapt. 6. Education and Certifications: If you have a degree in finance, economics, or a related field, or if you have relevant certifications, be sure to mention them. 7. Conclude Professionally: Conclude your letter by expressing your interest in the opportunity to discuss your qualifications further in an interview. Thank the hiring manager for considering your application. 8. Proofread: Make sure your cover letter is free of errors. This shows your attention to detail, a crucial skill for a Financial Analyst. Remember, the goal of the cover letter is to get the hiring manager interested in you as a potential candidate, even without direct experience. Show them that you have the skills and the drive to succeed in the role.

Biden-Harris Administration Releases New Medicaid and CHIP Renewal Data Showing the Role State Policy Choices Play in Keeping Kids Covered

Sec. Becerra Calls on Nine States with the Highest Child Disenrollments to Immediately Take Up Proven Federal Flexibilities to Protect Children and Families; Biden-Harris Administration Extends Federal Flexibilities to States Until End of 2024

Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released new data on state Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) enrollment changes among children and youth since full eligibility renewals for these programs restarted earlier this year. The data released today make it clear that state policy choices have real consequences for children and families during Medicaid and CHIP renewals. States that take up proven flexibilities and strategies from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) are better able to protect kids’ coverage – especially when the state has also expanded Medicaid.

According to the data:

  • States that have taken up more of the federal strategies provided by CMS and prioritized auto-renewals ( ex parte) to reduce red tape for families have helped more eligible children renew Medicaid and CHIP coverage. Many of CMS’ flexibilities make it easier for states to renew eligible children’s coverage by using data the state already has available.
  • Barriers to coverage, such as a failure to expand Medicaid, are leading children and youth to fall through the cracks. For example, the 10 states that have not expanded Medicaid – Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Wisconsin, and Wyoming – have disenrolled more children than those that have expanded combined. In non-expansion states, youth who turned 19 while the continuous enrollment condition was in place are at risk of falling in the coverage gap and becoming uninsured; these youth on average account for 27.6% of disenrollments among children in non-expansion states since March 2023, compared to 12.1% of disenrollments in states that have expanded.
  • More than 88 million people, including nearly 40 million children and youth, were enrolled in Medicaid and CHIP coverage as of September 2023. Before the pandemic, in February 2020, about 71 million people were enrolled in Medicaid and CHIP, including about 35 million children.

In light of this data, CMS released new comprehensive guidance to states on strategies to protect Medicaid and CHIP coverage for children during this return to regular Medicaid and CHIP renewals. The guidance also announced an extension of these federal strategies for states through the end of 2024.

Secretary Becerra also sent letters  to the governors of nine states with the highest child disenrollment rates by number and percentage, urging them to adopt additional federal strategies and flexibilities to help prevent children and their families from losing coverage due to red tape. Those states include Arkansas *, Florida *, Georgia *, Idaho *, Montana *, New Hampshire *, Ohio *, South Dakota *, and Texas *. These nine states account for about 60% of the decline in children’s Medicaid and CHIP enrollment from March through September 2023, as indicated in the data release today. This is especially important for children and families of color who are likely disproportionately impacted.

“I urge you to ensure that no eligible child in your state loses their health insurance due to ‘red tape’ or other bureaucratic barriers during the Medicaid enrollment process,” said Secretary Becerra.

Because children’s eligibility thresholds are generally higher than those for adults, many children who have been disenrolled may still meet substantive Medicaid or CHIP eligibility requirements – underscoring the need for states to take further action to prevent eligible children from falling through the cracks. In his letter, Secretary Becerra called on these governors to:

  • Adopt the dozens of federal flexibilities and strategies developed to make renewals easier for children and families, including by leveraging guidance and tools published by CMS today;
  • Remove barriers, like CHIP enrollment fees and premiums, that make it harder for children to transition to CHIP coverage if they are no longer eligible for Medicaid;
  • Reach additional families by reducing call center wait times and partnering with pediatric providers, managed care plans, schools, and community organizations; and
  • Expand their Medicaid programs, if states have not done so already, to ensure that young adults over the age of 18 have affordable coverage options and do not fall in the coverage gap.

The actions taken today reflect HHS’ continued commitment to helping people access comprehensive, high-quality health coverage, whether through Medicaid, CHIP, the Health Insurance Marketplaces, Medicare, or an employer. To date, HHS, through CMS, has issued extensive guidance to states on federal Medicaid and CHIP renewal requirements, approved nearly 400 flexibilities for states to make renewals easier for people, made a special enrollment period available on HealthCare.gov to help individuals no longer eligible for Medicaid transition to Marketplace coverage, engaged with stakeholders across the public and private sectors, and conducted extensive outreach and advertising efforts to improve awareness about the return to regular Medicaid and CHIP renewals. HHS will continue to closely monitor states’ renewal efforts to ensure their compliance with federal Medicaid renewal requirements and will not hesitate to take action where it identifies issues of non-compliance.

“CMS is doing everything in our power to protect access to health coverage during the Medicaid and CHIP renewal process, especially for children,” said CMS Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure. “That’s why we’ve put forward dozens of strategies for states to protect children and families’ ability to stay covered. Many states have worked with us to adopt the strategies we’ve put on the table – and we strongly urge all states to do their part to make sure eligible children keep the coverage they need to grow and thrive.”

In addition to this data release on children and youth, CMS is releasing a CMS Informational Bulletin that highlights steps states can take to help keep eligible children enrolled in Medicaid and CHIP and announces for the first time that (e)(14) flexibilities will be available at least through the end of 2024, giving states even more opportunity to take up these strategies; new guidance to support transitions to other forms of coverage, including from Medicaid to CHIP and additional guidance to help states adopt CMS’ strategies and flexibilities to promote continuity of coverage; and data describing other enrollment trends during renewals, including trends related to Health Insurance Marketplace® enrollment.

Energy regulator rejects FortisBC's $327M application for natural gas pipeline

Fortisbc had argued that 30 km of new pipeline was needed to meet okanagan area's energy demands.

application letter of analyst

Social Sharing

The B.C. Utilities Commission (BCUC) has rejected an application from FortisBC to build a natural gas pipeline worth $327 million in the Okanagan region.

The Okanagan Capacity Upgrade (OCU) project would have seen the installation of 30 kilometres of new pipeline, running north from Penticton to Chute Lake, along with two new power stations to help regulate the pipeline's flow.

FortisBC, the main natural gas utility in the province, said the OCU project was needed to meet demand in the southern Interior over the next two decades.

It had told the BCUC that it would be unable to meet the demand for natural gas — which is primarily used to heat homes in B.C. — as early as the winter of 2026/27 with its existing pipeline infrastructure.

A red pipeline, starting from east of Penticton, B.C., goes upwards towards Chute Lake in the Okanagan.

However, the BCUC — the province's independent energy regulator — found that FortisBC did not account for a flattening, or even a downturn, of the demand for natural gas as the province moves away from fossil-fuel-based energy sources under its CleanBC plan .

"In conclusion, the panel finds that, if [FortisBC's] application is denied in whole or in part, the forecast peak demand growth … is highly unlikely to occur," a BCUC panel report released Friday stated.

The two-member panel found that the project was not "necessary for the public convenience and does not conserve the public interest" following an extensive consultation period which involved public feedback and the input of several stakeholders, including the Penticton Indian Band (PIB).

  • B.C. environment minister hails climate progress but advocates say LNG growth risks it all
  • 'Incremental action is no longer enough': Coalition pushes B.C. to move faster on climate-change mitigation

It stated that the province's environmental plan encourages electrification of heating infrastructure, in particular, with the plan encouraging new homes to install technologies like heat pumps instead of traditional natural gas heaters.

In a statement , FortisBC said they were reviewing the BCUC's decision.

"We are disappointed that our application to develop this important piece of infrastructure has been denied," the company said. "FortisBC's infrastructure is vital to the delivery of renewable and low-carbon gases, which are critical to the province's ability to meet its CleanBC targets."

Under provincial regulations , FortisBC can file a reconsideration application with the BCUC or take the regulator to court over a decision. The utility did not indicate in its statement if it was considering an appeal.

Proposal received nearly 100 letters

In total, the BCUC received 96 letters from the public commenting on the project.

The PIB, as well as five other stakeholders, served as interveners at the BCUC panel.

One of them, the industry group Commercial Energy Consumers Association of British Columbia, stated that FortisBC had demonstrated an "immediate need for capacity" and the push for more electrification would not significantly affect FortisBC's short-term future.

A woman wearing a hard hat, standing at a podium marked 'FortisBC', points to a large under-construction tower behind her.

On the other hand, climate non-profit First Things First Okanagan argued that recent climate action plans from the Okanagan cities of Vernon and Penticton recognized the need to reduce natural gas use in buildings.

The intervener argued that those plans would likely lessen natural gas demand in those areas in the years to come.

While the PIB indicated it would support the project in its final submission to the panel, an earlier report commissioned by the band stated that FortisBC had not demonstrated a clear need for it.

  • Court decisions forced a rethink of oil, gas emissions cap: Guilbeault
  • As climate summit nears end, fossil fuels — and the oilpatch — loom large over deal proposals

Ultimately, however, the PIB said its community had voted in support of FortisBC's plans.

After its consultation process, the BCUC panel said that there was no certainty that the full scope of the project was required.

It has directed Fortis to examine other short-term solutions for anticipated natural gas demand and file a mitigation plan by the end of July 2024.

National Signing Day: LSU football inks 27 commits from Class of 2024

Colin Hurley

LSU made quick work with National Signing Day on Wednesday.

The early signing period opened the door to 27 new players from the Class of 2024 as the Tigers signed all of their verbal commits from the recruiting cycle. Before 8 a.m., letters of intent started rolling in as four-star defensive end Gabriel Reliford , a former Texas A&M pledge, kicked things off.

The Tigers inked 11 offensive players, 15 defensive players and one special teamer in kicker Aeron Burrell , who will enroll at LSU in the summer. There's also a contingent of recruits committed to finishing out their respective basketball careers in Kylan Billiot and Ory Williams . Brian Kelly said Wednesday that 15 signees will enroll in January.

Trey'Dez Green , the highest-rated recruit signed by LSU from the Class of 2024, ranked the No. 1 player in Louisiana and at the tight end position in Rivals.com's Dec. 6 update. Along with Billiot, Davhon Keys and Kolaj Cobbins, Green is playing in the All-American Bowl next month.

LSU signed one junior college transfer: defensive tackle Shone Washington . The former Georgia lineman pledged to the Tigers on Nov. 27, following a visit for the Texas A&M game. Washington, a New Orleans product, held a commitment to LSU in the Class of 2022.

Colin Hurley was the lone quarterback signed Wednesday. The four-star pro style recruit reclassified to the Class of 2024, moving down to a four-star rating in the process. Fresh off the U.S. Army Bowl on Monday, Hurley will enroll at LSU in January.

The NCAA Dead Period started Monday, meaning coaches are prohibited from having face-to-face contact with high school recruits. Coaches are still allowed to extend offers and communicate with recruits over the phone. The period concludes Jan. 11.

Russia establishes special site to fabricate fuel for China’s CFR-600

!{Model.Description}

A special production site to fabricate fuel for China’s CFR-600 fast reactor under construction has been established at Russia’s Mashinostroitelny Zavod (MSZ - Machine-Building Plant) in Elektrostal (Moscow region), part of Rosatom’s TVEL Fuel Company.

As part of the project, MSZ had upgraded existing facilities fo the production of fuel for fast reactors, TVEL said on 3 March. Unique equipment has been created and installed, and dummy CFR-600 fuel assemblies have already been manufactured for testing.

The new production site was set up to service an export contract between TVEL and the Chinese company CNLY (part of China National Nuclear Corporation - CNNC) for the supply of uranium fuel for CFR-600 reactors. Construction of the first CFR-600 unit started in Xiapu County, in China's Fujian province in late 2017 followed by the second unit in December 2020. The contract is for the start-up fuel load, as well as refuelling for the first seven years. The start of deliveries is scheduled for 2023.

“The Russian nuclear industry has a unique 40 years of experience in operating fast reactors, as well as in the production of fuel for such facilities,” said TVEL President Natalya Nikipelova. “The Fuel Division of Rosatom is fulfilling its obligations within the framework of Russian-Chinese cooperation in the development of fast reactor technologies. These are unique projects when foreign design fuel is produced in Russia. Since 2010, the first Chinese fast neutron reactor CEFR has been operating on fuel manufactured at the Machine-Building Plant, and for the supply of CFR-600 fuel, a team of specialists from MSZ and TVEL has successfully completed a complex high-tech project to modernise production,” she explained.

A special feature of the new section is its versatility: this equipment will be used to produce fuel intended for both the Chinese CFR-600 and CEFR reactors and the Russian BN-600 reactor of the Beloyarsk NPP. In the near future, the production of standard products for the BN-600 will begin.

The contract for the supply of fuel for the CFR-600 was signed in December 2018 as part of a governmental agreement between Russia and China on cooperation in the construction and operation of a demonstration fast neutron reactor in China. This is part of a wider comprehensive programme of cooperation in the nuclear energy sector over the coming decades. This includes serial construction of the latest Russian NPP power units with generation 3+ VVER-1200 reactors at two sites in China (Tianwan and Xudabao NPPs). A package of intergovernmental documents and framework contracts for these projects was signed in 2018 during a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
