apa 6 newspaper article

To cite a newspaper article in APA format, you should have the following information:

  • (Year, Month day).
  • Article title (in sentence case).
  • Newspaper Name.

Solution #1: What to include in the citation information

  • You do not need to include retrieval information (e.g., date of access) in APA citations for electronic resources.
  • If you found a newspaper article through an online database (e.g., EBSCO’s Academic Search Complete), you do not need to include that information in the citation, either.
  • If a URL runs across multiple lines of text in the citation, break the URL off before punctuation (e.g., periods, forward slashes) – except https://.

Solution #2: Online newspaper article vs. Online news site article

If you’re citing an online article, first determine if you are citing an article from a newspaper OR an article from a news site. APA style has a slightly different format for each.

  • YES –> Cite it as a newspaper article.
  • NO –> Cite it as a web page or a news site article .
  • NO –> Cite it as a web page or news site article .

The rest of this guide gives reference structures and examples for newspaper articles.

To cite a newspaper in APA style, you need to have basic information including the author name, article title, newspaper title, date of publication, and page numbers. The templates for in-text citation and reference list entry of a newspaper and examples are given below:

In-text citation template and example:

Author Surname (Publication Year, Page Number)

Canton (2021, p. A1)

Parenthetical:

(Author Surname, Publication Year, Page Number)

Reference list entry template and example:

Surname, F. M. (Date of publication). Title of the article. Title of the Newspaper , Page numbers.

Canton. N. (2021, August 5). Covid-19: India to be removed from UK ‘Red’ travel list on August 8. The Times of India , A1.

Give the exact date of publication of the news in Year, Month Day format. The newspaper title is italicized. The title of the articles is set in sentence case; however, capitalize the first word after a colon.

To cite an online newspaper in APA style, you need to have basic information including the author name, article title, newspaper title, date of publication, and URL. The templates for in-text citations and a reference list entry of an online newspaper and examples are given below:

Newspaper & Magazine Articles - Guidelines

Newspaper and Magazine article citations include many of the same elements of journals and books, including author, date, title, source, pages, etc.

Common format for newspaper articles is:

Author, A. A. (Year, Month Day). Title of article.  Title of Newpaper , pp. xx-xx

Common format for magazine articles is:

Author. A. A. (Year, Month). Title of article.  Magazine Title , Volume(Issue, if applicable), pp. xx-xx.

  • When articles are found online, include the URL in the place of the page numbers.
  • If a newspaper article appears on discontinuous pages, give all page numbers, and separate the numbers with a comma (e.g. pp. A1, A4-6).
  • Magazines often include the volume and issue number on the front cover or table of contents page.
  • APA does not require the date you retrieved an online article, nor does it require the database used to retrieve the article.

Some newspapers change the title of their articles in print and online. Make sure to cite the proper (print or electronic) version of the article.

How to Cite Print Newspaper Articles

APA reference list citation for a print newspaper article

How to Cite Online Newspaper Articles

Newspapers and magazine articles found in online databases (e.g. NexisUni), should be cited as online articles.  However , you do not need to include the database in your citation--instead, include the home page for the publication.

Author, A. A. (Year, Day). Title of the article.  Title of the Newspaper . Retrieved from Newpaper-Homepage-URL

APA reference list citation for an online newspaper article

How to Cite Print Magazine Articles

Citing a print magazine article is very similar to citing a print journal article. Sometimes it can be more difficult to find the volume and issue number. If you are having trouble, check the cover or the table of contents page.

Author, A. A. (Year, Date). Title of article.  Title of Magazine, Volume (Issue), pp. xx-xx.

APA reference list citation for a print magazine article

How to Cite Online Magazine Articles

Online magazine articles, similar to newspapers, include articles acquired from databases. Once again, include the homepage for the magazine that is cited.

Author, A. A. (Year, Date). Title of the article.  Title of the Magazine, Volume (Issue). Retrieved from Magazine-Homepage-URL

Document Example:

Proper Bibliographic Reference Format:

  • Bibliographic references are double-spaced and indented half an inch after the first line.
  • If there is no author, the article title comes first.
  • Use italics and "headline-style" capitalization for titles of newspapers .
  • Use the URL of the homepage of the newspaper to avoid non-working URLs.
  • It is no longer necessary to include the date of retrieval.

Barcelona to ban burqa in municipal buildings (2010, June 14), Gulf News . Retrieved from http://gulfnews.com

In-Text Citations:

  • Citations are placed in the context of discussion using the author’s last name and date of publication.
  • When a work has no identified author, cite in text the first few words of the article title using double quotation marks, “headline-style" capitalization, and the year.

(“Barcelona to Ban Burqa,” 2010)

  • Alternatively, you can integrate the citation into the sentence by means of narrative.
  • There must be a total match between the reference list and the parenthetical citation, so the article title must stand in place of an author’s name in the essay.

“Barcelona to Ban Burqa” (2010) contends that the move is aimed at all dress that impedes identification.

Include the database home page  URL if the article is:

  • published in a journal which does not have its own home page
  • published in a discontinued journal
  • only available through an archival database such as JSTOR or ERIC

With doi, advance online publication

  • This article appears online before it is assigned a volume, issue or page numbers.

  • If the journal or magazine gives a season, not a month, include the season in your reference, e.g. (2008, Spring)
  • Page numbers (if shown online): Magazines - include the numbers only, no p.; Newspapers - use p. or pp.

In-text citation:

  • For more on in-text citations see the In-text Citation page.

See the DOI and URL page - link

Some business databases provide articles analysing a special industry or product. These articles often don't have authors. Use the publisher as the author, record the date of publication and name the database in the retrieval statement.

DOI = digital object identifier

  • A DOI commonly identifies a journal article but it can also be found on other publication types including books.
  • All DOIs start with 10 . and includes numbers and letters. Example: doi:10.1016/j.addbeh.2009.08.001
  • The DOI provides a permanent internet address for the item making it easy to locate.
  • You may search by DOI numbers in Library Search to locate articles.

Doi in your reference list entry:

  • Always use the DOI if available (for print or online articles and books).
  • No full stop at the end of a DOI.

A new citing format for DOI was introduced by APA in March 2017. The new format includes  https and the prefix doi.org : https://doi.org/10.1016/j.asw.2016.11.001

Articles retrieved from library databases may include ezproxy.aut.ac.nz in the DOIs. This ezproxy information should be removed.

For example:

https://doi-org. ezproxy.aut.ac.nz /10.1093/pubmed/fdv045

The correct URL for this DOI is:

https://doi.org/10.1093/pubmed/fdv045

If there is no DOI for a online journal article or an e-book, include a URL in your reference.

Use the URL of a journal home page for journal articles without DOI

  • Use the URL of the journal homepage, NOT the full URL of the article, in your reference.

Finding a journal homepage URL :

You could do a Google search for the journal title (within double quotation marks), e.g. "new zealand management magazine" to find the journal's homepage

Or, go to the Library database  Ulrichsweb , search by the journal title or the journal's ISSN to find the journal record. On the journal record page, find the journal URL for your reference.

Journals without a home page and no DOI:

This can happen to some discontinued journals, or journals archived in an archival database only.

  • Use the database home page URL in your reference. See the example in the following section.

Use a URL of a library database:

Resources retrieved from a library database, without a DOI:

If you use electronic resources without DOI, such as an ebook or a data set or a journal without a website, from a library database, You are required to include the URL of the database homepage  in your reference.

  • Do not use the full URL of the source that you retrieved from a database.

An ebook "Small town sustainability: economic, social, and environmental innovation".

The URL on the ebook page is:

https://ebookcentral-proquest-com.ezproxy.aut.ac.nz/lib/AUT/detail.action?docID=1121624

  • You should remove ezproxy and other details following it.
  • The correct URL in the reference for this book should be http://ebookcentral.proquest.com

A reference list only lists the sources you have referred to in your writing.

The purpose of the reference list is to allow your sources to be be found by your reader. It also gives credit to authors whose work and ideas you have considered.  All references cited in the text must appear in the reference list, except for personal communications (such as conversations or emails) which cannot be retrieved.

A bibliography is different from a reference list as it lists all the sources used during your research and background reading, not just the ones you refer to in your writing.

Reference list example

A secondary citation is where you are citing information or quotes the author of your reference has taken from source that you have not read.

  • Name the author of the original work in your text, cite the secondary source in in-text citation: (as cited in ..., 1993)

Reference list entry:

  • Give the secondary source in the reference list.

Note: All citations should be double spaced and have a hanging indent in a Reference List.

A "hanging indent" means that each subsequent line after the first line of your citation should be indented by 0.5 inches.

This Microsoft support page contains instructions about how to format a hanging indent in a paper.

How Do I Know If It's a Newspaper?

Not sure whether your article is from a newspaper? Look for these characteristics:

  • Main purpose is to provide readers with a brief account of current events locally, nationally or internationally.
  • Can be published daily, semiweekly or weekly.
  • Articles are usually written by journalists who may or may not have subject expertise.
  • Written for the general public, readers don't need any previous subject knowledge.
  • Little, if any, information about other sources is provided.

Articles may also come from journals or magazines.

If an item has no author, start the citation with the article title.

If, and only if, the article is signed "Anonymous", put the word Anonymous where you would normally place the author's name.

Cite author names in the order in which they appear on the source, not in alphabetical order.

Italicize titles of journals, magazines and newspapers. Do not italicize or use quotation marks for the titles of articles.

Capitalize only the first letter of the first word of the article title. If there is a colon in the article title, also capitalize the first letter of the first word after the colon.

If an item has no date, use the short form n.d. where you would normally put the date.

If an original publication date and a last updated date are provided, use the last updated date. If the more current date is "last reviewed" instead of "last updated," use the original publication date (since the review may not have changed the content).

Retrieval Dates

Most articles will not need these in the citation. Only use them for online articles from places where content may change often, like a free website or a wiki.

Page Numbers

If an article has no page numbers provided, leave that part of the citation out in the References List.

If an article doesn't appear on continuous pages, list all the page numbers the article is on, separated by commas. For example (4, 6, 12-14)

In the Body of a Paper

Books, Journals, Reports, Webpages, etc.: When you refer to titles of a “stand-alone work,” as the APA calls them on their APA Style website, such as books, journals, reports, and webpages, you should italicize them. Capitalize words as you would for an article title in a reference, e.g., In the book Crying in H Mart: A memoir , author Michelle Zauner (2021) describes her biracial origin and its impact on her identity.

Article or Chapter: When you refer to the title of a part of a work, such as an article or a chapter, put quotation marks around the title and capitalize it as you would for a journal title in a reference, e.g., In the chapter “Where’s the Wine,” Zauner (2021) describes how she decided to become a musician.

The APA Sample Paper below has more information about formatting your paper.

Delegate Math and the Futility of Haley’s Challenge to Trump

It’s not the final vote count in South Carolina that explains why the race might end so quickly. It’s the delegate count.

  • Share full article

Nate Cohn

By Nate Cohn

apa 6 newspaper article

If there had been any doubt about whether the Republican presidential primary was heading toward an early conclusion, it was put to rest Saturday night by the voters of South Carolina.

Donald J. Trump defeated Nikki Haley by around 20 percentage points, reaching around 60 percent of the vote with nearly all the vote counted.

It’s not a staggering landslide. In fact, Mr. Trump slightly underperformed the final polls, thanks to a vigorous turnout for Ms. Haley in Democratic-leaning metropolitan areas. Her strength may even be attributable to voters who intend to back President Biden in the general election, as anyone could vote in the South Carolina primary, regardless of party.

But this isn’t just any South Carolina primary: This is Ms. Haley’s home state. Even losing candidates have usually managed to win their home states. Ted Cruz and John Kasich did so against Mr. Trump in 2016. John McCain (2000), Howard Dean (2004), John Edwards (2004), Newt Gingrich (2012) and others all pulled off home state wins. For many of these candidates, their home state win was their only win. On Saturday, Ms. Haley didn’t come close.

A decisive home-state loss says everything you need to know (and you probably knew already). It confirms that she trails Mr. Trump by a huge margin nationwide — the kind of margin that made a home state win impossible. It throws cold water on any notion that greater name recognition would overcome her deficit in the polls. And it deprived her of the last, best chance to claim even a hint of momentum ahead of Super Tuesday, when nearly half of the delegates to the Republican convention will be awarded.

As a consequence, this race is poised to come to an end — and soon. Oddly, it’s not the final vote count in South Carolina that explains why the race might end so quickly. It’s the delegate count: Trump 44, Haley 0, with six more still uncalled.

You read that right: Mr. Trump won nearly all of the delegates from South Carolina with just 60 percent of the vote. That’s because Republican primary rules allow states to award most or even all of their delegates to the winner. And in South Carolina he was able to win nearly every delegate by winning the state and five of its seven congressional districts — with the final two still outstanding at this hour. (To my eye, it looks as if Mr. Trump and Ms. Haley will each win one, yielding a 3-3 split among those six outstanding delegates.)

There will be plenty more opportunities for Mr. Trump to win all or nearly all of the delegates of a state. California is one of those opportunities. Anything over 50 percent of the vote would give him every one of the state’s 169 delegates . Not every state has rules so favorable toward the winner, but with Mr. Trump faring so well nationwide — he leads the polling by around 60 percentage points — no set of rules would preclude Mr. Trump from obtaining the preponderance of the available delegates.

Together, Mr. Trump could easily win more than 90 percent of the delegates at stake on Super Tuesday on March 5, when nearly half of all delegates to the Republican convention will be awarded. That would put him just a hair short of winning the nomination and poised to clinch the nomination over the following week or two — before his first criminal trial, in New York, is set to begin.

An earlier version of this article misstated Wesley Clark’s home state. It’s Arkansas, not Oklahoma.

News and Analysis

President Biden is planning to make a rare visit to the southern border  on the same day as former President Donald Trump. The plans underscore the urgency now propelling Biden and his team on immigration.

Ronna McDaniel, the chairwoman of the Republican National Committee, said that she would step down on March 8 , as Trump seeks to install a new handpicked leader for the national party ahead of the general election this fall.

Americans for Prosperity Action, the political network created by the billionaire industrialist Koch brothers, announced that it was suspending its support for Nikki Haley  in the Republican primary after her latest defeat in South Carolina .

Pressure Builds in the West Wing: The presidency has always been a pressure cooker, but some in the Biden administration see wars, age, family stress and another race against Trump combining with unusual force .

Trump’s March to the Nomination: After his overwhelming victory in South Carolina, Trump shows no sign of being shaken from his controlling position in the Republican Party  — not in 2024, and not in the foreseeable future.

Gretchen Whitmer’s Electoral Test: The Michigan governor, who has taken a prominent role in President Biden’s re-election campaign, is popular in her state. But will that be enough for her to deliver Michigan for Biden?

The Rise of ‘Ambivalent Voters’: The 2024 presidential election could be decided by the Americans who vacillate between voting and not voting. What do we know about them?

2 officers shot and killed a man who discharged a shotgun, police say

  • Copy Link copied

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Two officers in New York shot and killed a man over the weekend, prompting authorities to launch an investigation and his family to demand answers.

Edward Holmes, 58, was fatally shot Saturday morning in Buffalo after police say he discharged his shotgun and officers returned fire.

Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said officers responded to a report of a man with a gun and encountered Holmes holding a shotgun in the middle of a residential street.

He said Saturday that officers told Holmes numerous times to drop his weapon, but he fired it instead.

The yacht "Simplicity", that officials say was hijacked by three escaped prisoners with two people aboard, is docked at the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Coastguard Service Calliaqua Base, in Calliaqua, St. Vincent, Friday, Feb. 23, 2024. Authorities in the eastern Caribbean said they were trying to locate two people believed to be U.S. citizens who were aboard the yacht that was hijacked by the three escaped prisoners from Grenada. (AP Photo/Kenton X. Chance)

Gramaglia said the two officers who fired their weapons have been placed on administrative leave and New York Attorney General Letitia James’ office is investigating, both of which are standard protocol in police shootings.

Police have not identified the officers but have said they’ll release body camera footage from the officers in the coming days.

Friends and family of Holmes, meanwhile, held a vigil Sunday evening outside Holmes’ home. They questioned why officers had not tried more to deescalate the situation.

They noted that police have said the 911 call appears to have come from Holmes’ number.

A complete guide to APA in-text citation (6th edition)

Published on November 4, 2020 by Raimo Streefkerk . Revised on May 19, 2022.

An APA in-text citation consists of the author’s last name and year of publication, for example: (Smith, 2020). When quoting , also include page numbers, for example (Smith, 2020, p.170).

Here’s what an in-text citation looks like in a sentence:

  • The author claims that “plagiarism is becoming a bigger problem” (Smith, 2014, p. 170) .
  • As Smith (2014) has shown, plagiarism is a serious issue for universities.
  • In 2014 , Smith found that plagiarism is becoming increasingly widespread.

Table of contents, apa in-text citations with multiple authors, in-text citations explained in under 4 minutes, punctuation in apa in-text citations, when to include page numbers, apa in-text citations with lists, exceptions and missing information.

Multiple author names are separated using a comma. Only the final name in the list is preceded by an ampersand (“&”), for example: (Taylor, Johnson, & Parker, 2019) . Use “ et al .” to shorten in-text citations of sources with 6+ authors (first in-text citations) and 3+ authors (subsequent in-text citations), for example: (Taylor et al., 2019) .

Using “et al.” in APA in-text citations

Sources with three, four or five authors are shortened after the first citation. From the second citation onwards, include only the first author name followed by “et al.” (“and others”). Sources with six or more authors are always shortened, including in the first citation.

  • When using the abbreviation “et al . ,” always include a period (“.”).
  • Include a comma between “et al.” and the publication date (e.g. Taylor et al., 2018).
  • There should be no punctuation between “et al.” and the author’s name preceding it.
  • The period ending the sentence always comes after the citation (even when quoting).

Never use an ampersand symbol (“&”) in the running text. Instead, use the full word “and.”

  • According to research by Taylor & Kotler … (2018).
  • Taylor and Kotler conclude … (2018).

Including the page number(s) in the in-text citation is required when quoting a source in APA . It is encouraged, but not required, when paraphrasing a source . Don’t include page numbers when referring to a work as a whole, e.g. “the study shows…”.

If the quote or paraphrase covers just one page, use “ p. 16. ” If it covers two or more pages, use a double ‘p’ followed by a page range (e.g.  pp. 16-18 ).

The in-text citation can be included in three different ways:

  • This is also confirmed by the business plan: “creating an APA Citation Generator is a lot of work but many students benefit from it” (Smith, 2014, pp. 14-15) .
  • Smith (2014) states: “making an APA Citation Generator is a lot of work but many students benefit from it” (pp. 14-15) .
  • In 2014 , Smith wrote: “making an APA Citation Generator is a lot of work but many students benefit from it” (pp. 14-15) .

Sources with no page numbers

When quoting a source that has no pages or page numbers, you can include a chapter or paragraph number instead.

If the source uses headings, cite the heading and the paragraph number following it. Long headings may be shortened, but then they should be enclosed in quotation marks.

  • (Johnson, 2019, Chapter 3)
  • (McCombes, 2016, para. 4)
  • (Smith, 2014, Conclusion, para. 2 )
  • (Streefkerk, 2019, “No Page Numbers,” para. 2)

If the cited list originates from one source, put the in-text citation after the last list item. If the list comes from several different sources, add the in-text citations after each list item.

  • Wired lifestyle
  • Time pressure
  • Risk aversion
  • Internet experience
  • Social interaction (Johnson, 2016, p. 18) .
  • Consumers experience greater risk for online purchases (Writers et al., 2016, p. 47) .
  • Young consumers experience no risk for online purchases (Porter, 2016, pp. 63-64) .

The basic APA guidelines are not applicable to every source. Information can be missing, confusing for the reader or simply different. The most common exceptions are listed below.

If the author is unknown, cite the first few words of the reference list entry instead (usually the title). Enclose the title in double quotation marks when citing an article, web page or book chapter. Italicize the title of periodicals, books, reports and brochures.

  • ( “U.S. Flood Risk Could Be Worse Than We Thought,”  2015)
  • ( Thinking, Fast and Slow , 2017)

For sources without a year of publication, use “n.d.” (no date) instead: (Johnson, n.d. ).

Multiple sources in the same parentheses

If you’re using multiple sources to support a statement, you can combine the in-text citations and separate them using semicolons. Order the sources alphabetically.

If you’re using multiple sources from the same author, you don’t have to repeat the author. Just add the other years and separate them with a comma.

Multiple publications from the same author(s) in the same year

To differentiate between two publications from the same author published in the same year, add a suffix after the publication year.

Repeated use of the same source

For citing the same source multiple times in a paragraph there are specific APA guidelines. The first mention should include the author and publication year. For subsequent mentions in the running text, you only have to include the author’s last name, not the year. However, citations in parentheses should always include the year.

Different authors with the same last name

To differentiate between two (or more) authors with the same last name, include the initials. This rule applies even if the year of publication is different.

Citing a source within a source (secondary source)

If you want to cite a source that you found in another source, you can do one of two things. First of all, you should try to find the original source ( primary source ). If you’re able to find it you can use regular APA guidelines.

If you are not able to find the primary source, you should cite it through the source that led you to it ( secondary source ). The in-text citation looks like this:

Note that you only need to include the publication year of the source you consulted (here Johnson).

Personal communication

Personal communication such as phone calls, emails and conversations are not cited in the reference list because they can’t be found anywhere. However, you should still cite them using an in-text citation.

Give the initials and the last name of the person you communicated with and provide as exact a date as possible.

Sales are declining in the second quarter  (P. G. Brown, personal communication, June 13, 2018).
