Does your school have a newspaper? If not, you could be responsible for creating one. Forming a new club will look great on your resume. You will also gain invaluable experience writing and editing, and may make new friends. To start a newspaper, form a game plan. Recruit a staff and figure out your newspaper's goals and missions. From there, work on getting funding for your paper. Assign articles so you can write, design, and print your first paper.

Creating a Solid Foundation

Step 1 Recruit a staff.

  • Think about the various rolls you need to fill. In addition to writers, you need people to take pictures, design the layout, and help with advertising your paper.
  • Look for people who enjoy writing. Ask in an AP English class, for example. You should also look for people with technical skills. If there's a computer club in your school, see if anyone would be interested in working on the paper.

Step 2 Decide how you'll print your paper.

  • You can publish a paper online. As more and more people are turning to the Internet for their reading, this may be a good option. You can use a site like WordPress to start a blog.
  • If you're attached to the idea of a print publication, think about how you'll go about this. How many pages will your paper be? What size paper will you use? Do you have the resources to print multiple copies of a paper?
  • Figure out where you can find a printer equipped to print out a paper. You can ask a local newspaper if you can use their printer. You can also stop by a local print shop, such as a FedEx, and see how much they charge.

Step 3 Think about your content.

  • It's important to know what's important to other students in the school—this can give you some material to use for your newspaper.
  • Think about what genres of writing you will include. What kind of news stories would you want to tackle for your feature articles? Do you want to stick to unbiased reporting, or include some editorials as well? Should you just include the basic news or look for interesting or controversial stories?
  • Think about lighter subjects you wish to include. Will you have someone to cover sports? Entertainment? School events? Will these be on the front page of your paper, or kept in a separate section?
  • Write up a mission statement. It can begin with something like, "The goal of our paper is to provide students a unique voice and report on issues relevant to our school."

Step 4 Find a meeting space.

  • Make sure you get a room with the right resources. If you're doing a digital paper, for example, you probably want a room with computers.
  • You should also think about space. How many people are on staff? Make sure you have a room that accommodates everyone.
  • A whiteboard or chalkboard may be necessary to jot down notes as the meeting progresses. If you plan on giving a presentation overviewing the plans for the paper, you may want a room with a projector.

Gaining the Funds

Step 1 Create a budget.

  • If you're printing your paper, figure out how much printing will cost. Are you printing at your school or at a print shop? Do you have to pay for paper? How much paper will you use? Figure out the total number of pages you're printing and how much it will cost.
  • You will also need other supplies. You may need pens and pencils for editing. You may need to pay for some graphic design software for the technical side. Figure out the costs of these expenses as well.

Step 2 Think about selling ads.

  • Go to businesses trying to attract a teenage audience. The grocery store where your mom shops may not benefit from advertising in a student newspaper. However, the coffee shop that high school students frequent may be interested in ad space.
  • Approach managers politely. Explain to them you're starting a newspaper and need funds for printing and other costs. Give them specific details about ads. How big will the ad space be? Where in the paper will the ads appear?

Step 3 Talk to your school board or student council.

  • How you request money will vary by school. Ask someone on student council or the school board about the formal requirements for requesting money. In some cases, you may have to register your club with the school before requesting funds.
  • You will probably have to explain your plan for the paper. You also may have to explain how it benefits the school. A newspaper can be a great way to teach students about reading, writing, and journalism. It can also help the student body stay informed about current events. These are things worth mentioning when requesting funds.

Step 4 Do some fundraising.

  • Try planning an event like a bake sale, car wash, or talent show. You can sell tickets or goods and services for money.
  • Ask a local business if they'll work with you on fundraising. You could, for example, bag groceries at a local supermarket for a day for tips.
  • Try an online fundraiser. Sites like GoFundMe can be used to ask for money for a variety of projects.

Writing Your First Paper

Step 1 Assign articles.

  • Pick articles that match each writer's skills. A student that tends to be the class clown my be best suited to write a comedic article. A politically inclined student could write an op-ed about current events.
  • Make sure you're covering everything you want to cover. You cannot give everyone their first choice article. Some news stories may not be interesting, but remind your staff there are no small parts. Everyone makes a valuable contribution to the paper, and there's always the next issue to get a better article.

Step 2 Figure out the layout.

  • Think about where you want to place stories. Which stories will be on the front page? Will you have separate sections for things like sports, politics, arts, and entertainment?
  • Are you going to print in color? Are photographs included? How will these be integrated into the articles?

Step 3 Create content besides writing.

  • You should include photos. A photographer can add a visual element to articles.
  • Do you have anyone who likes to draw? Including some cartoons can help.
  • Think about including things like puzzles. A crossword puzzle or word scramble can be a fun addition to your paper.

Step 4 Edit your paper.

  • It's not unusual for people to miss their own errors when reading their work. Therefore, it may make sense to have students swap articles with one another. [6] X Research source

Step 5 Market your paper.

  • You can hand out flyers at the beginning your classes. You can also put posters up around the school.
  • If you're doing an online paper, see if you can send your school a mass email the day your paper comes out.

Student Objectives

Hold up a sample front page from a selected newspaper. Ask students what they notice about the format that is different from other texts they read (e.g., black and white ink, graphics, headline, column format). Divide the students into groups of three to four members. Explain to the students that they will explore a newspaper, paying attention to the layout and format. Instruct students to study the front page first and discuss what different parts they notice. Ask each group to report back to the whole class what members noticed was contained on the front page. Make a list of parts on the board. (e.g., title, headlines, pictures or graphics, captions, date, subtitles, table of contents/index, etc.). Students should notice similarities between different newspapers. Discuss with the class how newspapers use a standard format. In their groups, have students continue to explore copies of newspapers. What kinds of things do they notice? Students should begin to identify sections and features that are specific to newspapers. Have the groups again report to the whole class what types of items they noticed in their paper. Continue keeping the list of items on the board. (Additional items may include: editorials, cartoons, horoscope, local news, weddings, classifieds, advertising, etc.) Explain to the class that people read newspapers differently than other types of texts. Discuss how people read newspapers. Reading a newspaper matches people's interests in certain things. They scan headlines, subtitles, and images to see if the story interests them or not. Read some sample headlines from newspapers. Ask, "How many of you would be interested in reading this story?" For homework, have students ask their family members what newspapers they read regularly and what sections they read most often. Give an example of your own newspaper reading habits. (For example, "First I check the weather to help me decide what to wear to school. Then I go to the local news to see what is happening in my town. Finally, I scan the headlines to see what is happening in the world. If I have time, I start the crossword puzzle.")

Ask the students to report about their family's newspaper reading habits. Make a list of newspapers that are read and determine which are the most common. List the words who, what, where, when, and why on the board, overhead, or chart paper. Answer each of the five W questions using the popular rhyme "Jack & Jill." Example:

  • Who? Jack and Jill
  • What? Fell down and broke crown
  • Where? On the hill
  • When? Sometime in the past
  • Why? Trying to fetch water

Read "Bad Fall Injures Children" article from page 4 of the Grandview Newspaper lesson plan . Students clarify their previous responses to the five W s according to the article. Explain how these five questions help to summarize a news story. Put students in groups of three to four members. Ask the students to choose another famous rhyme or fairy tale and answer the five W questions. Have each group read just the answers to their questions, and then have the class try to guess what fairy tale or rhyme it is. Explain that these five W s help with the organization of a news story and that they make up the most important details of the story. Demonstrate to the class the organization of a good news story using the Inverted Pyramid Format overhead. Use a sample newspaper story to illustrate an example of this format For homework, ask students to select a newspaper article that they are interested in reading and bring it to school the next day.

Give students time to read the newspaper article they brought from home. Hand out the Newspaper Story Format sheet. Students should then complete the sheet using details from their particular article and share the summary of their newspaper article. Ask the students to rewrite the newspaper article in their own words as if they were a reporter for their local newspaper. What changes would they make and why? Have the students share their stories with a classmate using the following questions to guide their discussion:

  • Were changes made to the lead? Why?
  • Were changes made to the five W s? Why?
  • Were changes made to the details? Why?

As a class, discuss fact versus opinion. Explain that news articles do not include the reporter's opinion. Have students go back and see if the changes that were made to their articles were strictly factual. Refer to original articles as needed for examples of fact-based stories.

Read-aloud to the class from one or more of the suggested titles:

Have students brainstorm the types of articles they would like to write and list them on the board. Look at the list and ask students if the articles could be grouped into categories or "newspaper sections." Use the Reporting Tips overhead to present how to make newspaper articles more interesting. Go over each point and clarify any questions that students may raise. Group students based on interests to form an "editorial staff" for each newspaper section. Have the groups meet to decide who will write which stories. Students can use the Reporter's Guide handout as a guideline. When they have finished, students can begin collecting facts for their stories.

Session 5 and 6

Take students to the computer lab and have them write their first draft. They should not worry about font, size, or columns at this point. Be sure that they save their work and print a hard copy of their article for editing. Students' stories should then be self-edited and edited by two other members of their editorial staff (using the Story Feedback Form ). Students should make necessary revisions to their stories based on the comments from the Story Feedback Form.

In the computer lab, have students access the Internet Public Library website and explore newspapers from around the world. They should pay particular attention to the design and layout elements. For example, some articles may include graphics (e.g., photos, charts, graphs). Discuss what patterns of layout design the students noticed. As a whole class, discuss newspaper layout, addressing the following points:

  • Headline News: Top priority articles are near the front (1-2 pages). These are typically of high interest to your entire audience of readers (e.g., town news such as a new park or community center). Long front-page articles can be continued on an inside page to provide room for other headline news.
  • Feature Articles: Stories about topics or events that are of interest to a certain group of readers (e.g., sports, animal stories, academic topics, interviews with school staff, book reviews). These are typically grouped into sections.
  • Pictures or graphics: The image should always appear with the story. A caption can be included. The size usually depends on how much space is available in the layout.

Give students the opportunity to explore these layout items in newspapers in the classroom and online. Students should look at the Junior Seahawk Newsletter to get ideas for their own layout.

Session 8 and 9

In the computer lab, students should complete final story revisions. They may then begin the newspaper layout using appropriate software. The ReadWriteThink Printing Press includes an option for creating a newspaper. Each editorial staff works together to complete their newspaper section. Note: 8 ½ X 11 size pages are optimal. They can be printed and copied back to back on 11 X 17 paper that can be folded like a real newspaper. The completed paper must have an even number of pages for this format. Pictures can be drawn or pasted into the layout. Depending on the available resources, pictures can also be scanned or downloaded from a digital camera. Tell students to play around with fonts and columns. They should experiment and be creative! Once pages are completed, they should be printed. The editorial staff should do a final reading for errors. Pages are then submitted to the teacher for publishing.

Distribute the class newspaper to the students and allow them time to read it. When they have finished, hand out the Newspaper Writing Assessment sheet and ask them to fill it out.

The ultimate guide for your school newspaper

Schools newspapers are a great way to inform and entertain highschool and college communities, but they are often not taken seriously. Perhaps the reason for that is the fact that some school newspapers are indeed amateurish. But they shouldn’t be. With the right team and with the right tools, it’s possible to produce a highly professional school paper.

It can be a daunting task, at first. There are so many things that you need to do, from team management and training to article writing , photojournalism, design, production and online student publishing. You might need a little help. We are here to provide that. This article is named “the ultimate guide for your school newspaper” because we have covered all the aspects of producing a student newspaper and managing the editorial team.

We simply want you to be a little less stressed, while producing a quality student paper.

This article is for everybody who is involved in the newspaper production, regardless of the role. You’ll find some valuable tips for running and contributing to your school newspaper.

Let’s talk about the structure of the student newspaper team. What roles must be present in your team? How should you structure it? How many people should be part of the team?

There are many different ways to organize the staff, but you’ll likely end up with a team that is more or less similar to traditional newspaper team structure, with the addition of the faculty advisor.

Let’s take a look at the typical roles in a newspaper team:

  • Faculty advisor – gives the final approval to the school paper, is responsible for reading all articles and notifying the staff if a piece is not yet ready for press or if it doesn’t meet the newspaper’s standards
  • Reporters (news, sports, photo, opinion, tech) – responsible for staying up to date with the latest and upcoming events happening in school. They should also stay informed on politics, sports, technology or culture according to the department they are in
  • Editor / Department editors – editors plan and cover articles, proofread and edit reporter submissions. Department editors are responsible for all the articles that belong in their section and they work closely with the editors and reporters that are in their sections. They should be more experienced than editors, so the department editor role shouldn’t be assigned to a junior student
  • Designers + Art director – The design/ art team is in charge of the visual aspect of the newspaper, including layouts, illustrations and everything that is related with the visual aspects. The art director oversees the entire design process, so he works closely with the designers
  • Photo reporters + photo editor – in smaller teams the role of the photo editor is not necessarily required, because his responsibilities can be covered by the art director
  • Production manager – responsible of setting the production schedule and making sure the all departments are meeting deadlines for copy, design, editing, proofreading and so on. He communicates directly with the printing house and with the technical department
  • Technical staff – the technical department publishes the newspaper on the website. The online version of your newspaper can be an identical copy of the printed one, or you can decide to publish the articles on your website in a different format
  • Business / Advertising – if you run ads in your school paper, you will need someone to mediate your relationship with advertisers and establish new business connections to grow the advertiser network

If there’s currently no structure in place or you have a very small team, you can start small. Baby steps.

You don’t necessarily need an entire department to cover a role. Sometimes a single student is enough, especially if your school newspaper isn’t long (eg. hire just one designer instead of an entire team + art director). You can also have students take on multiple roles (eg: a student can be both editor and production manager). In some cases the faculty advisor becomes so involved in the production that he acts as a production manager.

Make sure each one of these roles is covered, and start from there. As your team grows you will need more structure and clearly defined roles.

Write clear job descriptions for each role

This way each student will understand his place and purpose in the team, will know exactly who he has to report to, what is expected, duties and responsibilities.

Even though job descriptions are not a standard practice in school newsrooms, writing them will be very rewarding. Yes, it will take some time, but it will not be wasted time, for sure. These job descriptions will help students perform better, and it will make the manager’s role so much easier.

Hiring for school newspapers

Some colleges offer paid positions for the newspaper staff, but most high schools and colleges do not. However, there should still be a “hiring” or selection process in place.

Many students are interested in becoming involved in the production of the school newspaper, for various reasons: it’s fun, it’s a great learning experience, it looks good on college or job applications. That’s what it’s like to work on a college newspaper!

These are all valid reasons to join the school newspaper crew, but not everybody gets to be a part of it, if there are too many people interested in a position.

The best way to figure out if a student is a great candidate for a job is by interviewing him. These interviews usually take place in the first months of the first semester. After you finish all the interviews select the best candidates and let them know they’ve been selected.

When you’re a part of a student newspaper team, you know that you’ll be there for limited amount of time. The team will change every single year: the most experienced student journalists will graduate and leave the school, and a new of inexperienced juniors will need onboarding. This is why training and onboarding is a never ending process in the school newsroom. It’s a fact of life, and it’s definitely a challenge, but it can be dealt with.

Encourage the more experienced team members to train and coach the new hires. But oftentime, that won’t be enough, because not everyone is willing to take on this responsibility. Sometimes, they might need a little push. You might need to assign a trainer for each new person that joins the team.

You can also invest time in creating a coaching manual for trainers and guideline manuals for trainees. It will simplify the onboarding process and reduce the hours spent coaching new colleagues.

Ground rules

College newspapers function under the protection of the First Amendment, so students can truly express themselves and their opinions, even when their views are contradictory to those of the school. Yet, that doesn’t mean that the school has no control whatsoever over what gets to be published. The faculty advisor has the legal right to impose certain rules and standards, if the purpose is educating students.

If the faculty advisor isn’t happy with the quality of an article he may suggest edits or reject it altogether. This doesn’t mean that he’s censoring free speech.

There should also be some ground rules regarding copyrights, plagiarism, subjectivism and other sensitive issues such as violence and profanity.

School newspapers and regular newspapers are structured in a similar manner, even though the topics are tailored to the audience. If you need some ideas for articles, take a look at the article types below. It will help you get organized and produce a well rounded newspaper.

School news

News articles should cover various events, policies and other school news that are interesting for students. These news don’t have to be limited to your high school or college. You can write about national and even worldwide news, but only if they provide useful information.

For example, a worldwide student art competition could be the subject of a newspaper article. National laws and legislation regarding schools and education should also be covered in news articles, because they concern all students and will impact their lives. School news should be presented in an objective manner, presenting facts, not rumors or assumptions. They should be based on research and present different points of views.

Feature story

(over 1000 words) Each newspaper edition is likely to have a feature story. It’s the longest article in the paper, and the most in-depth. Feature stories revolve around facts, but they take a story to the next level by presenting context, quotes, reasons why it happened, ramifications of the story and implications. The article shouldn’t involve personal bias. It should be based on an elaborate investigation made by the journalist, interviewing multiple accounts. However, the feature isn’t limited to facts, it gives the journalist a little room for interpretation and embedding his opinion in the piece, in a subtle way.

The topic varies. It could be some big news, an in-depth analysis of a social school phenomenon, a new policy or something else.

(under 500 words)

Unlike the previous 2 types of articles, the editorial is an opinion piece. Still, the writer shouldn’t express his own views, but the opinion of the entire editorial staff.

For that reason, the editorial is usually not signed. It’s a piece of commentary that appears to be written by an entire team. That’s why the writer/ editor shouldn’t talk about himself using the singular form of the first person: I, me, myself.

The editorial should be entertaining or argumentative. In order to achieve that you can start by making a claim that could be controversial, then proceed by explaining your reasons and clarifying your claim. This flow will keep readers engaged. Some of them will agree with your point of view. Others won’t, but that’s alright. The purpose is to challenge readers.

Topics: school rules, policies, teaching methods, advice, announcements, school news

Just like editorials, columns are opinion-based articles. The content and topics are very much like an editorial. But the main difference between an editorial piece and a column is the signature. The editorial goes unsigned because it represents the collective views of editorial staff, but the columnist will publish his piece under his name. That’s why columnists can write about their opinions using the singular form of the first person. Sometimes an editor will publish a series of articles on the same topic/ similar topics, through several issues.

All of the big newspapers publish reviews because they help the general public make decisions. There’s no reason why school newspaper shouldn’t publish review articles on various topics: school textbooks, movies, books, or even classes.

Start by writing a short description of the thing that you are reviewing. Then add details about your personal experience. Include details about pros, cons, value for the money, performance mentions of other reviews, comparison to similar products. Try to be as objective and unbiased as possible.

Don’t forget to write a conclusion in which you summarize the review and give a verdict: whether you would recommend the product or not.

Promotional pieces

Companies pay money to have advertorials inserted in newspapers. The school context is different, but you will still need to include some promotional articles every once in a while. It may be for the school’s art or sports club, for a conference organized by the school or for a different event.

Your article should offer useful details about the event/ club that is promoted and it should also present the benefits it offers for students in order to encourage them to participate / join a program / buy a ticket.

Educational articles

This category includes tutorials and how-to articles with useful tips. Topics vary, but they should be school related, at least slightly. The first paragraph which contains the most important details is “the lead”. The lead contains a very short and concise summary of the story. They should make sure that the first paragraph provides answers to the “5 Ws”:

A well written headline is acts as a hook that makes readers want to read the entire piece. There are different types of headlines: humourous, mysterious, informative. There’s a lot of work that goes into an article. Sometimes the journalist has to gather all the information himself. In other cases, it involves interviewing witnesses or experts. There’s also that scenario in which the student will do research and find useful information in books, websites or other publications.

Regardless of how you collect data, you should always cite your source. It will add credibility to your story. It goes without saying that all journalists, including students, should check the reliability of their sources. Don’t just pick up information from dubious online sites.

In some cases your sources will ask you to protect their identity. It will probably not happen very often in the school context, but if they do, you must respect their wish.

Editing and proofreading

Make sure that the most experienced editors are reviewing and editing every article before publication. Obviously, the writer should be the first person to edit and check for spelling & grammar mistakes. But that’s not enough, not if you have high standards for your school’s paper (which… you should).

Submit each piece for peer review. The reviewer should analyze grammar, spelling, tone and voice, as well as other standards imposed by the production manager. Encourage students to provide useful, objective feedback. Don’t get offended if they make a lot of comments and suggestions. Writing for a school newspaper is a learning experience. You can’t get better if you don’t learn from your mistakes.

How to Write a News Article That's Effective

Techniques for writing a news article differ from those needed for academic papers. Whether you're interested in writing for a school newspaper, fulfilling a requirement for a class, or seeking a writing job in journalism, you'll need to know the difference. To write like a real reporter, consider this guide for how to write a news article.

Choose Your Topic

First, you must decide what to write about. Sometimes an editor or instructor will give you assignments, but you’ll often have to find your own topics to cover.

If you get to choose your topic, you might be able to pick a subject related to your personal experience or family history, which would give you a strong framework and a dose of perspective. However, this route means you must work to avoid bias—you may have strong opinions that could affect your conclusions. You also could pick a topic that revolves around a personal interest, such as your favorite sport.

Research for Your News Article

Even if you end up with a topic close to your heart, you should begin with research, using books and articles that will give you a full understanding of the subject. Go to the library and find background information about people, organizations, and events you intend to cover.

Next, interview a few people to collect more information and quotes that give perspective on the topic. Don't be intimidated by the idea of interviewing important or newsworthy people—an interview can be as formal or informal as you want to make it, so relax and have fun with it. Find people with backgrounds in the topic and strong opinions, and carefully write down or record their responses for accuracy. Let the interviewees know that you will be quoting them.

Parts of a News Article

Before you write your first draft, you should be aware of the parts that make up a news story:

Headline or title

The headline  of your article should be catchy and to the point. You should punctuate your title using Associated Press style guidelines unless your publication specifies something else. Other members of the publication staff frequently write the headlines, but this will help focus your thoughts and maybe save those other staffers some time.

  • "Lost dog finds his way home"
  • "Debate tonight in Jasper Hall"
  • "Panel chooses 3 essay winners"

The byline is the name of the writer—your name, in this case.

Lead (sometimes written "lede")

The lead is the first sentence or paragraph, written to provide a preview of the entire article. It summarizes the story and includes many of the basic facts. The lead will help readers decide if they want to read the rest of the news article or if they are satisfied knowing these details.

Once you’ve set the stage with a good lead, follow up with a well-written story that contains facts from your research and quotes from people you’ve interviewed. The article should not contain your opinions. Detail any events in chronological order. Use the active voice —not passive voice —when possible, and write in clear, short, direct sentences.

In a news article, you should use the inverted pyramid format—putting the most critical information in the early paragraphs and following with supporting information. This ensures that the reader sees the important details first. Hopefully they'll be intrigued enough to continue to the end.

The sources

Include your sources in the body with the information and quotes they provide. This is different from academic papers, where you would add these at the end of the piece.

Your conclusion can be your last bit of information, a summary, or a carefully chosen quote to leave the reader with a strong sense of your story.

Conducting Interviews and Research

Step 1 Contact sources for the article.

  • Your sources should be experts in the field your article is focusing on, such as a certified professional, a professor, or an academic. You can use sources that have extensive experience or background in a field that relates to your article.
  • Sources like a witness to an event can also be useful, especially if they have first-hand experience of the topic you are covering.

Step 2 Conduct interviews with your sources.

  • You may need to conduct more than 1 interview with your sources, especially if they are a major source for the article. You can also send follow-up questions to your sources as needed.
  • You will need to transcribe your interviews by typing them up to ensure you quote your sources correctly. Having transcriptions will also make fact checking your article and backing up your sources much easier.

Step 3 Look up public information on the topic at your local library and online.

  • Make sure you cite the information properly in your article by noting the name or organization that provided the information. You should have credible sources to back up any claims or arguments made in the article.

Step 4 Fact check any statistics or numbers before you use them in the article.

  • If you are writing the newspaper article for an editor, they may require you to provide a list of your sources for the article to show you have fact checked your work.

Structuring the Article

Step 1 Create an engaging, informative headline.

  • For example, you may create a headline like, “Teen Girl Missing in Okotoks” or “Congress Stalls on Family Planning Bill.”
  • In some cases, it may be easier to save the headline for last, after you have written the article, so you know what the focus of the article is and can sum it up clearly.

Step 2 Open the article with a “lead” first sentence.

  • For example, you may write a lead like, "An outbreak of flu in San Francisco has led to 3 elementary school closings this week, according to school officials." Or, "A missing girl originally from Okotoks was found Monday in an abandoned cabin in the Minnetonka area, according to local police."

Step 3 Place information chronologically, starting with the most current, important details.

  • For example, you may write, “10-12 students have been diagnosed with the flu and health officials fear it could continue to spread if it is not contained.”

Step 4 Expand on key details in the rest of the article.

  • For example, you may write, “The teen girl was reported missing on Friday afternoon by her mother after she did not come home from a study date at a friend’s house. She is the second girl to be reported missing in the past 2 weeks from the Okotoks area.”

Step 5 Include at least 2-3 supporting quotations from sources.

  • For example, you may write, “‘The girl is shaken, but does not appear to have any serious injuries,’ stated local Police Chief Wilborn.” Or you may write, “According to a statement by school officials, ‘The shutdown will prevent the flu from spreading further and ensure the safety of our students.’”
  • Avoid using long quotes or more than 4 quotes in the article, as the reader may get confused or lost if there are too many quotations.

Step 6 End with an informative quote or a link to more information.

  • For example, you may write, “The girl’s mother expressed relief for her daughter and concern about her community, noting, ‘I just hope no other girls go missing in this area.’”
  • Or you may write, “Local health officials are urging parents to check the municipal health and wellness website, www.hw.org, for updates on when schools are able to reopen.”

Creating the Appropriate Voice and Tone

Step 1 Use specific, clear language that is easy to follow.

  • For example, rather than write, “The missing girl’s mother thought it had to do with school,” you may write, “The missing girl’s mother thought bullying at school may have caused her daughter’s absences.”

Step 2 Write in the active, third person voice.

  • For example, rather than write, “A press conference will be held by local police tomorrow to address the missing girls and the public’s concerns,” you may write, “Local police will address the missing girls and the public’s concerns in a press conference tomorrow.”

Step 3 Maintain an objective, informative tone in the article.

  • For example, if you're writing about two political candidates running against each other in an election, present both candidates in an equal light, rather than giving extra details about 1 candidate.
  • If you're writing an op-ed piece, it's okay to mix some of your opinions with the facts.

Polishing the Article

Step 1 Read the article aloud.

  • Reading the article aloud can also help you catch any spelling, grammar, or punctuation errors.

Step 2 Show the article to others for critique and feedback.

  • For example, you may ask others questions like, “Were you able to understand what happened, based on the information in the article?” “Was the language clear and easy to follow?” “Was the article well supported with sources and quotes?”

Step 3 Revise the article for voice, tone, and length.

  • If you are writing the newspaper article for a class, make sure it falls within the prescribed word limit for the assignment.

Starting a school newspaper is a mix of headache and opportunity. There’s so much for you to decide. From getting the right team to organizing distribution, there’s lots to do.

A successful school newspaper shouldn’t be a significant increase to your teacher workload, although it will take lots of organising at the start. Done right, you’ll be able to facilitate with a light touch, rather than feel you’ve been lumbered with an unwanted second career.

So where to start? This simple guide shares seven essentials you need to get your school newspaper up and running.

Tip 1: Find Your Team

Tip 2: get the organization right, tip 3: plan regular meetings, tip 4: teach your students essential writing skills, tip 5: create a shared code of values, tip 6: show your students writing role models, tip 7: promote your school newspaper, moving forward.

Being in the newspaper team should be a privilege, not a punishment.

Avoid making it a compulsory club, something for students to stick on their CV, or a project a year group must complete.

Send out an advert asking for specific applications for each individual role. Share a simple job description so students with different interests will see the potential options. Offer interviews, just as you would with an actual job.

When you’re recruiting, watch out for these three types of students you want on your team:

The Writers

Ask any teacher in your school, and they’ll name a handful of budding writers in their class. These keen students will form the lifeblood of your newspaper and relish the freedom to write for a real purpose. Invite them to interview for a role.

Make sure some students aren’t put off by their low literacy skills. Newspapers aren’t full of flowery prose, which will suit many less confident writers.

The Inspiration

A newspaper is much more than just good writing, although this is essential. Look for students with a keen interest in improving the school. The ones that volunteer to be in a student council, or to be prefects.

They will enjoy making a difference through raising topical issues and pushing for positive change. Just make sure they’re not over-stretching themselves by volunteering for everything.

The Organisers

Don’t forget that a newspaper takes a lot of organizing. You don’t want to spend your evenings doing all the work.

Students with good organisation and leadership skills are great for editor and subeditor roles. They can commission the work and chase late submissions to reduce last minute panic before publication.

Now you’ve handpicked the perfect team, let them decide the name of the newspaper. From the start, you want them to have as much ownership as possible. Let the age of the students determine how much involvement you must have.

Help them plan how they will run the newspaper. They will need to consider:

  • Whether it will it be a print paper, digital, or a mixture of both
  • How often it will be published
  • Who is in charge of each area/ section
  • Who has overall responsibility for each edition (you could use a rota)

Choose the style elements everyone will use (called a style guide ) to avoid students wasting lots of time playing with fonts and formatting. This means all articles will feel like they are part of the same newspaper.

It’s a good idea to join your students for their meetings to oversee what they plan to include in each edition. They’ll need support to agree details like deadlines for submission and who is responsible for what. Offer to take the minutes for them so they have a record of their final decisions.

Use social media to find journalists with an interest in promoting young talent. Keep your school library well-stocked with newspapers written for children. Many offer resources to use in school that will help improve the quality of your newspaper.

Once you’re ready to publish the newspaper, think about how you can distribute it to the widest audience. Could you share it on the school website or through social media? Will copies be sent home for parents and added to the school library?

Make your school newspaper important to everyone. Every class could have a set time to read it together. Mention it in assemblies and give copies out to prospective parents and visitors. The more the students see that staff value your newspaper, the higher profile it will have.

At the end of each year, you know some of your students will leave. Don’t make any one person indispensable. You can plan for understudies to shadow key roles to train them up in plenty of time. Recruit new talent each year and host regular events to make them feel like a team.

Not only do we put students under pressure to master the inconsistent spelling patterns and complex grammar of the English language, but we require them to know how to write for a variety of purposes in both fiction and nonfiction genres.

On top of this, writing is just one aspect of one subject among many.

The best way to help our students to overcome the challenge of writing in any genre is to help them to break things down into their component parts and give them a basic formula to follow.

In this article, we will break article writing down into its components and present a formulaic approach that will provide a basic structure for our students to follow.

Once this structure is mastered, students can, of course, begin to play with things.

But, until then, there is plenty of room within the discipline of the basic structure for students to express themselves in the article form.

The Cambridge Dictionary defines an article as, “a piece of writing on a particular subject in a newspaper or magazine, or on the internet.”

An article’s shape and structure will vary depending on whether it’s intended for publication in a newspaper, magazine, or online.

Each of these media has its own requirements. For example, a magazine feature article may go into great depth on a topic, allowing for long, evocative paragraphs of exposition, while an online blog article may be full of lots of short paragraphs that get to the point without too much fanfare.

Each of these forms makes different demands on the writer, and it’s for this reason that most newspapers, magazines, and big websites provide writers with specific submission guidelines.

So, with such diverse demands placed on article writers, how do we go about teaching the diverse skill required to our students?

Luckily, we can break most types of articles down into some common key features.

Below we’ll take a look at the most important of these, along with an activity to get your students practicing each aspect right away.

Finally, we’ll take a look at a few general tips on article writing.

KEY WRITTEN FEATURES OF AN ARTICLE

The headline.

The purpose of the headline is to capture the reader’s attention and let them know what the article is about. All of this in usually no more than 4 or 5 words!

There is an art to good headline writing and all sorts of literary devices (e.g alliteration and metaphor) can be used to create an eye-catching and intriguing headline.

The best way for students to learn how headlines work is to view some historical samples.

Newspaper headlines especially are known for being short and pithy. Here are just a few examples to whet the appetite:

  • Hitler Is Dead
  • Lincoln Shot
  • Men Walk On The Moon
  • Berlin Wall Crumbles

You could encourage students to find some pithy examples of their own. It’s amazing how much information can be condensed into so few words – this is the essence of good headline writing.

Headlines Practice Activity:

Give students opportunities to practice headline writing in isolation from article writing itself. For example, take sample stories from newspapers and magazines and challenge students to write new headlines for them. Set a word limit appropriate to the skills and age of the students. For example, younger, more inexperienced students might write 9-word headlines, while older, more skilled students might thrive with the challenge of a 4-word limit.

THE SUBHEADING

Subheadings give the reader more information on what the article is about. For this reason, they’re often a little longer than headlines and use a smaller font, though still larger (or in bold) than the font used in the body of the text.

Subheadings provide a little more of the necessary detail to inform readers what’s going on. If a headline is a jab, the subheading is the cross.

In magazines and online articles especially, there are often subheadings throughout the article. In this context, they let the reader know what each paragraph/section is about.

Subheadings also help the reader’s eye to scan the article and quickly get a sense of the story, for the writer they help immensely to organize the structure of the story.

Practice Activity:

One way to help organize paragraphs in an article is to use parallel structure.

Parallel structure is when we use similar words, phrases, and grammar structures. We might see this being used in a series of subheadings in a ‘How to’ article where the subheadings all start with an imperative such as choose , attach , cut , etc.

Have you noticed how all the sections in this ‘Key Features’ part of this article start simply with the word ‘The’? This is another example of a parallel structure.

Yet another example of parallel structure is when all the subheadings appear in the form of a question.

Whichever type of parallel structure students use, they need to be sure that they all in some way relate to the original title of the article.

To give students a chance to practice writing subheadings using parallel structure, instruct them to write subheadings for a piece of text that doesn’t already have them.

THE BODY PARAGRAPHS

Writing good, solid paragraphs is an art in itself. Luckily, you’ll find comprehensive guidance on this aspect of writing articles elsewhere on this site.

But, for now, let’s take a look at some general considerations for students when writing articles.

The length of the paragraphs will depend on the medium. For example, for online articles paragraphs are generally brief and to the point. Usually no more than a sentence or two and rarely more than five.

This style is often replicated in newspapers and magazines of a more tabloid nature.

Short paragraphs allow for more white space on the page or screen. This is much less daunting for the reader and makes it easier for them to focus their attention on what’s being said – a crucial advantage in these attention-hungry times.

Lots of white space makes articles much more readable on devices with smaller screens such as phones and tablets. Chunking information into brief paragraphs enables online readers to scan articles more quickly too, which is how much of the information on the internet is consumed – I do hope you’re not scanning this!

Conversely, articles that are written more formally, for example, academic articles, can benefit from longer paragraphs which allow for more space to provide supporting evidence for the topic sentence.

Deciding on the length of paragraphs in an article can be done by first thinking about the intended audience, the purpose of the article, as well as the nature of the information to be communicated.

A fun activity to practice paragraphing is to organize your students into groups and provide them with a copy of an article with the original paragraph breaks removed. In their groups, students read the article and decide on where they think the paragraphs should go.

To do this successfully, they’ll need to consider the type of publication they think the article is intended for, the purpose of the article, the language level, and the nature of the information.

When the groups have finished adding in their paragraph breaks they can share and compare their decisions with the other groups before you finally reveal where the breaks were in the original article.

Article Photos and Captions

Photos and captions aren’t always necessary in articles, but when they are, our students must understand how to make the most of them.

Just like the previous key features on our list, there are specific things students need to know to make the most of this specific aspect of article writing.

  The internet has given us the gift of access to innumerable copyright-free images to accompany our articles, but what criteria should students use when choosing an image?

To choose the perfect accompanying image/s for their article, students need to identify images that match the tone of their article.

Quirky or risque images won’t match the more serious tone of an academic article well, but they might work perfectly for that feature of tattoo artists.

Photos are meant to bring value to an article – they speak a thousand words after all. It’s important then that the image is of a high enough resolution that the detail of those ‘thousand words’ is clearly visible to the reader.

Just as the tone of the photo should match the tone of the article, the tone of the caption should match the tone of the photo.

Captions should be informative and engaging. Often, the first thing a reader will look at in an article is the photos and then the caption. Frequently, they’ll use the information therein to decide whether or not they’ll continue to read.

When writing captions, students must avoid redundancy. They need to add information to that which is already available to the reader by looking at the image.

There’s no point merely describing in words what the reader can clearly see with their own two eyes. Students should describe things that are not immediately obvious, such as date, location, or the name of the event.

One last point, captions should be written in the present tense. By definition, the photo will show something that has happened already. Despite this, students should write as if the action in the image is happening right now.

Remind students that their captions should be brief; they must be careful not to waste words with such a tight format.

For this fun activity, you’ll need some old magazines and newspapers. Cut some of the photos out minus their captions. All the accompanying captions should be cut out and jumbled up. It’s the students’ job to match each image with the correct accompanying caption.

Students can present their decisions and explanations when they’ve finished.

A good extension exercise would be to challenge the students to write a superior caption for each of the images they’ve worked on.

TOP 5 TIPS FOR ARTICLE WRITING

Now your students have the key features of article writing sewn up tightly, let’s take a look at a few quick and easy tips to help them polish up their general article writing skills.

1. Read Widely – Reading widely, all manner of articles, is the best way students can internalize some of the habits of good article writing. Luckily, with the internet, it’s easy to find articles on any topic of interest at the click of a mouse.

2. Choose Interesting Topics – It’s hard to engage the reader when the writer is not themselves engaged. Be sure students choose article topics that pique their own interest (as far as possible!).

3. Research and Outline – Regardless of the type of article the student is writing, some research will be required. The research will help an article take shape in the form of an outline. Without these two crucial stages, articles run the danger of wandering aimlessly and, worse still, of containing inaccurate information and details.

4. Keep Things Simple – All articles are about communicating information in one form or another. The most effective way of doing this is to keep things easily understood by the reader. This is especially true when the topic is complex.

5. Edit and Proofread – This can be said of any type of writing, but it still bears repeating. Students need to ensure they comprehensively proofread and edit their work when they’ve ‘finished’. The importance of this part of the writing process can’t be overstated.

The following is an excerpt from The Elements of News Writing by James W. Kershner (Pearson, 2009).  This book is available for checkout at Buley Library (Call number PN 4775 .K37 2009, on the 3rd floor)

1.       Select a newsworthy story. Your goal is to give a timely account of a recent, interesting, and significant event or development.

2.       Think about your goals and objectives in writing the story. What will the readers want and need to know about the subject? How can you best tell the story?

3.       Find out who can provide the most accurate information about the subject and how to contact that person. Find out what other sources you can use to obtain relevant information.

4.       Do your homework. Do research so that you have a basic understanding of the situation before interviewing anyone about it. Check clips of stories already written on the subject.

5.       Prepare a list of questions to ask about the story.

6.       Arrange to get the needed information. This may mean scheduling an interview or locating the appropriate people to interview.

7.       Interview the source and take notes. Ask your prepared questions, plus other questions that come up in the course of the conversation. Ask the source to suggest other sources. Ask if you may call the source back for further questions later.

8.       Interview second and third sources, ask follow-up questions, and do further research until you have a understanding of the story.

9.       Ask yourself, “What’s the story?” and “What’s the point?” Be sure you have a clear focus in your mind before you start writing. Rough out a lead in your head.

10.   Make a written outline or plan of your story.

11.   Write your first draft following your plan, but changing it as necessary.

12.   Read through your first draft looking for content problems, holes, or weak spots, and revise it as necessary. Delete extra words, sentences, and paragraphs. Make every word count.

13.   Read your second draft aloud, listening for problems in logic or syntax.

14.   Copyedit your story, checking carefully for spelling, punctuation, grammar, and style problems.

15.   Deliver your finished story to the editor before deadline.

Writing articles for the school paper can be fun and interesting. You can be the journalist who covers the school’s basketball game or spring concert. Maybe you will go to school board meetings and report back to your fellow students on the decisions the board made. You might interview the principal about the new classrooms being built because the school is expanding. There are all kinds of stories waiting to be told by you. But writing stories for the newspaper is not the same as writing an English paper or poetry. Journalism has its own guidelines. The following will give you the basic guidelines and some ideas on how to make your stories shine.

The first paragraph. The first paragraph is the most important paragraph in a news article for it gives the most critical information about the story. Space is limited in newspapers so news articles present the most important information first. Subsequent paragraphs contain information in order of descending importance. This allows the editor the option of shortening any story to fit the space available by cutting from the bottom.

Who, what, where, when, and, maybe, why, and how. In the first paragraph include all the basic facts of the news story. Who did what? Where did the event occur? When did it happen? Sometimes explaining why and how helps the reader understand more about the importance of the event or helps the reader connect to the story. For example, pretend you were covering your school’s basketball game last Friday night. Here is how the first paragraph of the story might appear. The comments in parentheses show the basic facts.

In a knuckle-bitingly close (how) game (what), the Cassadaga Cougars (who) topped the Independence 76ers (who) by 1 slim point last Friday night (when) on the 76ers’ home court (where). The final score was 68 to 67. Senior Langston Barnard led the scoring with 22 points.

Make the story interesting. There are several techniques you can use to make your story interesting to your reader which will be covered in the next few paragraphs. The first technique is quotes. People want to know what others have to say about the event. You can quote experts, celebrities, or the ordinary Joe. Following up on our example above, you might interview the coach, some of the players, the school principal, or people in the stands. You could also generate interest by explaining the importance of the event in relation to other things. Continuing on with our example, you could talk about where the team now stands in the rankings or how this game’s performance compared to other games this season.

After the game, Coach Humbart said, “I am proud of the way the team fought through to the very end. They just kept coming back each time the 76ers scored.” The team had struggled earlier in the season with consistency and keeping the pressure on through the entire game. The last three games have been narrow victories. The team still stands a chance to play in the county tournament if it can win three more games this season.

As an alternative you could tell the story from the point of view of a player. This alternative creates what is called a “human interest” story. People are interested in how others feel and what they do. Readers enjoy learning how someone overcame adversity to succeed or survive.

Use clean, crisp English. News writing should be short and to the point. News stories deliver the facts quickly. However, readers get bored when they see the same story with just the facts changed. Choose each word carefully and provide not only information but a sense of urgency and impact. Take another look at the first sentence in the example paragraph. In theory each time the school’s team played a game, the newspaper could use the same sentence and just change the essential facts. What if the newspaper ran a sentence like this each time the team played?

The Cassadaga Cougars played the Independence 76ers last Friday night and won 68 to 67.

Boring! Much better to run the original example sentence.

Add pictures. Find out if the school photographer will be covering the event as well. If not, take a camera with you. Take lots of pictures so your editor can choose the perfect one to accompany your story. Action pictures work best, but they need to be in focus and have good contrast between the lights and darks in the picture. If there is too much gray in a photograph, it will not print distinctly enough for your readers to tell what is happening. Get as close as you can to your subject by “zooming” the camera lens in or moving yourself. Make the subject fill the picture frame. Avoid background distractions. Take pictures in landscape format and in portrait format to allow for different layout options in the newspaper.

Be accurate. A news reporter’s responsibility is to accurately report on event. Double check the spelling of names, addresses, scores, dollar figures, and other factual information you collect for your story. If you have a recording device, record interviews. Write down details on a notepad.

Be fair. Remember to cover all sides of any controversial issue. Contact people who are advocating for different solutions to an issue and give them a chance to explain their stand on the issue. When you report the issue, clearly state the differing points of view. Allow readers to come to their own conclusions about how they view the issue. Journalism is about seeking the truth and giving unbiased reports.

Spell Check. Make a diligent search for errors, including using spell check and grammar check, before sending your story to the editor.

Bylines. A byline is the acknowledgement of who wrote the story. In some newspapers, the byline is simply your name. Other newspapers allow a little more space for lauding the author of the article. Bylines give readers some insight into the article writer’s expertise. Examples are “By Kevin Block, Sports Reporter” or “By Lucy Witt, covering education issues in the Piedmont”. Ask your editor about the newspaper’s policy on bylines.

Apply these guidelines to write quality articles that grip, inform, and entertain your readers.

One Utah paper is making money with a novel idea: print

At a time when many publishers are cutting print days, the Deseret News in Utah is finding success with a new print product.

Dubbed “The Digest,” the free publication amasses the Deseret News’s best journalism from its various platforms and is delivered to 120,000 homes around Salt Lake City once a month. The Digest launched in September and has been profitable since October, publisher Burke Olsen said.

“The result has been great enthusiasm from advertisers because this is now, I think, the largest newspaper product (in Utah). It has the largest distribution of any print product in the state that I’m aware of,” Olsen said. “It reinvigorated our advertising base.”

Executives at the Deseret News took inspiration from the company’s direct-mail advertising publication, Hometown Values, which is distributed for free to half a million Utah homes. They adopted a similar approach to create The Digest, which they insert into select copies of Hometown Values. Every month, they target certain ZIP codes in counties around Salt Lake City based on the audiences their advertisers are trying to reach.

The Digest has become a “marketing product that pays for itself,” Olsen said. It helps acquaint Utah residents with the Deseret News brand by republishing stories from the company’s website, newspaper, magazine and religion-focused publication. (Deseret News is owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.)

Olsen estimated that a person who lives in one of the counties the Deseret News is targeting will receive The Digest about three times a year. The company wants The Digest to feel different from its other products, and it wants to make sure people do not receive it so often that they decide to abandon the Deseret News’ paid products.

“We tend to target established ZIP codes, more residential homes than rental areas, people who tend to have higher incomes — more disposable income — and that’s because that’s attractive to our advertising base,” Olsen said. “Over time, as we figure out on behalf of our advertisers what works and based on what kind of subscription uptick we get, we might focus on some ZIP codes more often than others.”

The Digest has nearly twice the audience as the Deseret News’ other print products — a selling point to advertisers — and the company expects to make $250,000 in profit off The Digest alone by the end of the year.

The Deseret News has already gotten phone calls from people who received The Digest and decided to subscribe to the biweekly paper, Olsen said. He speculated that a print paper taps into a certain nostalgia and its physicality lends readers a sense of accomplishment when they finish an issue.

Fifteen-year-old Adam Kunz said he discovered the benefits of physical papers when he came across a free sample from the Deseret News in the mail in November. Until then, he got most of his news through online aggregators like Google News. Newspapers were associated with “boring, old people stuff,” and Kunz hadn’t realized that the Deseret News was still printing physical copies of its paper.

He was surprised by how much he liked having a tangible paper in which stories were neatly packed. Kunz told his mother he wanted a Deseret News subscription for Christmas and that if she wouldn’t pay for it, he would buy it himself. Now, he starts and ends his days with the paper, reading a few stories at a time so that he can make the papers — which come twice a week — last.

Kunz said he especially likes following national news and political coverage, including stories about the election and bills passing through the legislature. He’s amassed a huge stack of papers in his bedroom. Though his friends and family sometimes tease him for paying for a newspaper subscription, Kunz insists they don’t understand “the experience of actually sitting down and flipping through the pages,” something he says is “awesome.”

“I think everyone has a responsibility to know what’s going on in the world.”

Before becoming publisher, Olsen worked as Deseret News’ head digital officer. “I didn’t care about our print products for a long time,” he admitted. But The Digest has made him wonder if there’s a product or marketing campaign that could slow or even reverse declines in print readership.

Though The Digest is still very new, Olsen has started to wonder if it might eventually outlive the Deseret News’ print paper. That is one of the things the company will be evaluating as The Digest moves forward.

“There may come a point at which this is no longer feasible and profitable because the cost of paper and postage continues to go up,” Olsen said. “But until it does, we ought to use as publishers, as news media, every avenue in creative ways of reaching audiences with journalism that will help them make better decisions … because they’re better informed about the world.”

Most AI text generators offer a question-answer format. To use them, simply enter a command in the prompt field and it will reply with a response. Prompts can be a question like, “What is the best way to tell someone you love them?” Or a request like, “Rank the top grossing movies of all time.”

It’s important to note that generative AI models tend to make up things it doesn’t know the answer to, rather than being non-responsive, so always ask to cite sources and be sure to check them.

There are several different types of AI generators. These include text generators, music generators , and art and image generators . But as the technology advances, many of the tools are becoming multi-modal, gaining the ability to produce anything from a 1500-word article on solar farms to a 15-minute video on the topic for YouTube.

Copilot is Microsoft’s AI tool, formerly known as Bing Chat, It’s available for free at copilot.microsoft.com . Similar to Gemini, it can create text and image content in many languages including English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Japanese, Portuguese and Dutch. Its pro version is $20/month and offers more advanced features including faster speeds.

Claude is an AI chatbot from Anthropic that Amazon and Google are investing billions of dollars in . This chatbot’s super power is its ability to summarize exceptionally long texts which enables it to forecast trends, compare and contrast documents and more, according to the company . Free at claude.ai with pro version at $20/month.

Pi is an AI chatbot from Inflection AI, a startup cofounded by LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman , who served on the boards of Microsoft and OpenAI. You can have text or voice conversations with it in the mobile app. It’s also introducing video chat. Free at pi.ai with pro version available for $9.99/month.

Canva’s design platform offers a Magic Write tool at canva.com/magic-write . Powered by OpenAI, it provides copy for a range of needs from profile bios to presentations with charts. It also has an image and video generator to create related visual content. Its pro version costs $119.99/year with additional AI tools.

Grammarly offers a variety of free AI text generators at grammarly.com/ai-writing-tools . Built on OpenAI tools, this AI writer offers assistance through a series of prompts for writing a resume, cover letter, email, blog posts, social media captions, business plans, reports and letters of resignation. Paid plans start at $12/month.

The proliferation of AI text generators is changing the way content is being created. Jobs most at risk are in media and marketing, finance and banking, and legal services where many processes are being automated.

But whether AI can completely replace human writers depends on how good its reasoning gets. AI still has a hard time conveying empathy, humor, cultural references, dialects, slang and emotional intelligence. And it only knows right from wrong based on the rules it is given, and therefore is subject to bias.

There are many pros and cons of using AI writing tools. They’re a great time saver in getting the process started, whether it’s generating an outline of what you want to write or providing research to help you dig deeper. But it cannot be relied upon for accuracy or originality as it’s only as good as the data it’s trained on.

Students in a Seattle English class were told that their love of reading and writing is a characteristic of “white supremacy,” in the latest Seattle Public Schools high school controversy. The lesson plan has one local father speaking out, calling it “educational malpractice.”

As part of the Black Lives Matter at School Week, World Literature and Composition students at Lincoln High School were given a handout with definitions of the “9 characteristics of white supremacy,” according to the father of a student. Given the subject matter of the class, the father found it odd this particular lesson was brought up.

The Seattle high schoolers were told that “Worship of the Written Word” is white supremacy because it is “an erasure of the wide range of ways we communicate with each other.” By this definition, the very subject of World Literature and Composition is racist. It also chides the idea that we hyper-value written communication because it’s a form of “honoring only what is written and even then only what is written to a narrow standard, full of misinformation and lies.” The worksheet does not provide any context for what it actually means.

“I feel bad for any students who actually internalize stuff like this as it is setting them up for failure,” the father explained to the Jason Rantz Show on KTTH.

Everything is ‘white supremacy’ at Seattle Public Schools

The father asked to remain anonymous for fear of retribution against his child by Seattle Public Schools. He said the other pieces of the worksheet were equally disturbing.

The worksheet labels “objectivity,” “individualism,” and “perfectionism” as white supremacy. If students deny their own racism — or that any of the nine characteristics are legitimately racist — is also white supremacy. Denialism or being overly defensive is a racist example of an “entitlement to name what is an [sic] isn’t racism and that those with power have a right to be shielded from the stresses of antiracist work.”

The father argues the concepts are “incoherent and cannot stand any sort of reasoned analysis.” And he notes that it’s set up to ensure students accept every concept without ever questioning the claims.

“How is a 15-year-old kid supposed to object in class when ‘denial and defensiveness’ is itself a characteristic of white supremacy? This is truly educational malpractice.”

White students told to apologize in yet another Seattle high school controversy

Another aspect of the white supremacy lesson at this Seattle school involved a video titled “Getting Called Out: How to Apologize” by Franchesca Ramsey. It’s reportedly presented in the context of white students expressing what the teacher views as “white supremacy.”

“Getting called out, in this context of this video, is when you say or do something that upholds the oppression of a marginalized group of people,” Ramsey says.

Ramsey says her advice is about becoming an ally and “doing the right thing.” She explains you shouldn’t “get defensive” by denying you’re oppressing marginalized people, even if you’re not actually oppressing marginalized people.

“What you really need to do is listen because this is where the other person is hopefully going to explain to you what you did wrong and how you can explain it,” she says.

In the context of the worksheet on white supremacy, it seems clear that students must merely accept that they are upholding oppression. Using the worksheet, if a student defends independence or a love of reading and writing, that student is supposed to accept that it’s white supremacist thinking and stop acting independently or loving to read and write.

Father says Seattle Public Schools isn’t serving students

The father says he taught his son to be on the lookout for this kind of Radical Left indoctrination. It’s why his son flagged the worksheets to him. But he notes that the curriculum doesn’t exactly help his kid on the subject he’s supposed to be learning.

“My problem with this curriculum is that this is supposed to be a writing and literature class and lessons like these do nothing to help my kid become a better writer,” the father explained. “I’m sure Lincoln administration will point to the high ELA proficiency scores but the high proportion of HCC [highly capable] kids (40% of the student body) is a big factor. With so many smart, hard working kids (white supremacists) it’s easy to support these luxury beliefs but system-wide only 63% of kids are proficient in English. Is this really the best use of class time? ”

The father also wonders how many students will fall for this toxic thinking across Seattle schools where concepts around white supremacy are so clearly partisan.

“I feel bad for any students who actually internalize stuff like this as it is setting them up for failure,” he said.

Seattle Public Schools spokespeople provided their normal response to requests for comment: none.

Western Australia has introduced a limit on ham in school canteens. Parents are reportedly confused and frustrated . So what has changed and what evidence is it based on?

Reclassifying processed meats

The WA Department of Health has reconfigured its system for classifying food and drink in public schools. It uses a traffic light approach, allocating green, amber or red colours to foods and drinks.

Ham and other processed red meats have been moved from an “amber” label to a “red” label.

Each colour is associated with restrictions on how food and drinks can be sold:

  • green items must account for at least 60% of items on a menu
  • amber items must account for less than 40% of items on a menu
  • red items cannot be on the menu.

There’s one catch. The new guidelines allow ham to be sold as if it is an amber item, only two days per week, if ham was already on a canteen’s menu prior to the reconfiguration.

Why restrict ham?

Singling out nutrients or foods as “good” or “bad” can lead to confusion and polarised views on diet. Rather than focusing on individual foods, long-term health outcomes are more closely linked to overall dietary patterns .

Ham itself is not inherently considered junk food. It’s a source of protein and many other nutrients.

However, certain types of ham products – especially highly processed or cured hams – are less healthy options for several reasons:

High sodium content

Many commercially available hams, especially highly processed and cured varieties, can be high in sodium , which is salt.

Excessive sodium intake is associated with health issues such as high blood pressure and can increase the risk of heart disease and strokes.

On average, Australian children consume more sodium than the recommended upper limit : 600 mg a day for children aged four to eight and 800 mg a day for those aged nine to 13.

The World Health Organization says reducing sodium is one of the most cost-effective ways nations can improve the health of their populations.

Some processed hams may contain additives , preservatives and flavour-enhancers we should limit.

Saturated fat

While ham is a good source of protein, certain cuts can be higher in saturated fat.

Any ham sold in canteens under the new rules (where ham is treated as an “amber” food until the canteen menu changes) must have less than 3g of saturated fat per 100g .

Diets high in saturated fat are linked to an increased risk of heart disease . However, not all research supports this claim .

Processing methods

The methods to process and cure ham may involve smoking, which can produce compounds such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. In large quantities, these may cause health concerns , including increasing the risk of bowel cancer.

What are some ham alternatives?

Lean, minimally processed ham, prepared without excessive sodium or additives, can potentially be a part of a healthy overall diet. And parents in WA can continue packing ham in their child’s lunchbox.

When choosing ham, read the labels and select products with a lower sodium content, minimal additives and healthier preparation methods.

When looking for low-salt alternatives to ham, there are several options to consider:

turkey breast . Turkey is a lean meat and can be a good substitute for ham. Look for low-sodium or no-salt-added varieties

chicken breast . Skinless, boneless chicken breast is a versatile and low-sodium option. Grilling, baking or roasting can add flavour without relying on salt

smoked salmon . While salmon naturally contains some sodium, smoked salmon tends to be lower in sodium than cured ham. Choose varieties with little or no added salt

roast beef . Choose lean cuts of roast beef and consider seasoning with herbs and spices instead of relying on salt for flavour

homemade roasts . Prepare your own roasts using lean meats such as pork loin, beef sirloin or lamb. This way, you have more control over the ingredients and can minimise added salt

grilled vegetables . These can be a tasty alternative to meat. Eggplant, zucchini, capsicum and portobello mushrooms have a satisfying texture and flavour

beans and legumes . Beans, lentils and chickpeas can be used as alternatives in various dishes. They are naturally low in sodium and high in protein and fibre.

What are some other lunchbox tips?

Packing lunchboxes can be challenging and frustrating for parents.

Consider planning ahead, involving your kids, reducing pre-packaged foods, balancing cost and convenience, and giving your kids lunchbox accountability.

6 years after Parkland shooting, school librarian works hard to make her space the safest

Six years since the day everything changed, the library at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School brims with resources to promote mental health. There’s a “Zen den” for resting and decompressing, a therapy dog named River, yoga equipment, a button-making station and smartboards that display videos of crochet lessons.

Librarian Diana Haneski, River’s owner, puts a lot of thought into what to include in – and exclude from – the library’s collections. She opted to remove a Civil War-themed book with a rifle on its cover, for example, and to avoid other materials with imagery that could be upsetting. And she has made sure to include a range of literature that offers students an escape from daily life, including sci-fi novels and youth-oriented magazines.

Haneski, 63, a winner of this year's national “I Love My Librarian” award for her public service, sees such escapism and mental support as essential for herself and her students.

“People need a place to chill and relax and reduce their anxiety,” she said. It’s a conscious act on her part to help make that happen. “This is how we’re feeling better.”

The high schoolers who survived the shooting at the Parkland, Florida, campus six years ago, on Valentine’s Day 2018, have graduated . But Haneski and about half the people on staff during the massacre remain, along with the children who were in middle and elementary school when a former student opened fire , killing 17 and injuring 17 others.

The building where the killing happened is scheduled for demolition this summer . A nearby structure that houses the library, a softly lit second-floor room with views of trees, will remain intact. The library has undergone updates since becoming a sanctuary for the campus as it heals, reflects and fortifies itself for the future. 

Haneski – who was barricaded inside the library with dozens of others that awful day – and other veteran staffers still carry their trauma, relying on the library when they need help coping. Florida officials restricted what books can be on the shelves and what mental health lessons can be taught in classrooms in recent years, yet Haneski remains undeterred in her quest to keep minds and doors open. She believes a school library should be a place for joy that helps students and educators deal with the pain of those memories.  

That’s a core lesson she took from the tragedy.

“Some good came from the horror,” Haneski said. “It’s OK to have some joy – to seek it, to recognize it, to be open to it.”

Different in the worst way

Haneski has been a librarian for 26 years, the past nine at Stoneman, and says it’s “the best job I’ve ever had,” in part “because it’s different every single day.”

Valentine’s Day 2018 was different in the worst way.

The campus was busy with lots of meetings and a fire drill. Students and teachers were conversing more than usual.

“And then, all of a sudden, they’re gone. Like they were there, we talked to them,” she said. “It’s unbelievable.”

Hours before the shooting, staff joked that Chris Hixon, the mustachioed athletic director and wrestling coach, had probably been a good husband on that romantic holiday. Hixon, who always helped the students during lunchtime, was just “such a nice guy,” Haneski said. The 49-year-old U.S. Navy reservist was shot as he sped toward the gunfire , trying to stop the assailant.

Haneski credits her survival that day to the advice of a friend who was the librarian at Sandy Hook Elementary on the day a former student opened fire at the school in Newtown, Connecticut.

Haneski knew to block the entrance before she hid with 54 others in a library storage room for more than two hours. She knew to wear clothes with pockets so she had her walkie-talkie, cellphone and keys handy. Inside the closet, Haneski was frozen, moving little but her eyes as she tracked the shadows creeping in through the crack beneath the door. 

She later learned Joaquin Oliver was slain while in his creative writing class. She had known the senior with almond-shaped brown eyes since he was in middle school. In one of their last conversations, Haneski told the 17-year-old sports fan she’d be clapping loudly for him at graduation. 

“I didn’t get to do that,” she said. 

She also heard about Nikolas Cruz, the man later sentenced to life in prison for carrying out the massacre. She had last seen him in the library, printing out homework. When he was younger, she remembered, “he was out of it.” But that day, “he looked like somebody who knew what he wanted and was getting it done,” Haneski said. “It looked to me like he was going to be better.”

They survived school shootings: Now their own kids are in classrooms amid rising epidemic.

Beginning to defrost

For months after the massacre, Haneski could hardly eat or focus; she couldn’t even read. She could not fathom returning to a campus where such an evil thing had happened, where so many people she knew and cared deeply about lost their lives. 

She attended some of the funerals, hearing from victims’ parents, siblings and friends. She witnessed their courage as they demanded change and attracted the attention of policymakers . 

“And I said: ‘You know what? If they have that strength, I'd better go back because I need to be there. I’m not afraid. I have to go. I am still alive,’” she said. “I’m still here – I have to do something good.”

It took time for the Stoneman library to resume being a place of serenity.

In the early days, the school received an outpouring of support. There were therapy dogs – golden retrievers, Labradors, mutts and River, a puffy mini Bernedoodle with piercing eyes and a glistening black nose who came that July as a puppy. 

There were counselors who consoled and pastors who prayed and artists who painted and sang. Volunteers and home economics students at a nearby school made blankets and pillowcases, like the vibrant quilt of pinks, oranges and purples that Haneski still keeps draped over her office chair.

Haneski was grateful but overwhelmed. She managed to return to campus, but she struggled to engage, warily watching the influx of helpers who stationed themselves in the library through a window in her office. 

Then came some folks from the Center for Mind-Body Medicine . The center trains communities around the world affected by trauma in self-care and self-awareness techniques. Experts teach the strategies to community members who then share the practices with others. The center believes the people who have dealt with the trauma firsthand are best equipped to teach such strategies.

James S. Gordon, a psychiatrist who founded and leads the center, recalls Haneski being skeptical when he began leading activities in the library. 

Haneski wasn’t sure this was for her. But once she tried the breathing exercises, the guided imagery, the mindful eating and walking, she immediately understood their power. An especially powerful activity had participants to shake their arms and legs, “sort of like a chicken dance,” she said. After she tried that – for the first time since the shooting – Haneski’s physical body started to feel better. 

She finally began to defrost. 

“I could see the change,” Gordon said. “I could see she had gone from this place of being frozen and shut down to feeling herself come alive again.” 

Social-emotional learning under fire

After the massacre, Florida officials implemented a host of reforms aimed at making communities safer: They raised the legal age to buy a gun and required a three-day waiting period. 

The state’s Republican leadership also promoted social-emotional learning, a model that includes lessons on emotional regulation, relationship skills and responsible decision-making. 

But in the years that followed, conservative leaders in Tallahassee reversed course. Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a law allowing people to carry concealed weapons without a permit, and lawmakers attempted to undo the mandatory age for buyers and the waiting period . 

DeSantis has also worked to restrict social-emotional learning in schools, saying this material is a form of indoctrination. A USA TODAY investigation last year found that the governor’s rhetoric around such learning resulted in several large districts phasing out the type of lessons that the Stoneman community had embraced after the shooting. 

It has been heartbreaking for Haneski and her colleagues to hear, with unbearable regularity, about students and teachers dying of gun violence in other communities. In 2020 and 2021, firearm injuries were the leading cause of death among children. 

“I feel like we made some progress, but then we didn’t,” Haneski said. “How could there be so many shootings after all that? It’s incredible to me.”

Haneski has also watched as libraries, those sanctuaries of good, became targets. In Florida, some school librarians have been instructed to remove books designed to be inclusive of diverse identities. 

Haneski tries not to let these controversies derail her. She focuses on what’s in front of her.

'The perfect target'?: Movement to ban books from schools brings vitriol toward librarians

Glitter and mindfulness

Haneski now serves as a facilitator with the mind-body center and credits its work, along with similar mindfulness efforts , with helping her emerge from the trauma.

That work inspired the “Zen den” – also called “the eagles’ nest,” a nod to the school’s mascot – which kids and teachers visit for a “rest in the nest,” whether they need some quiet time or a place to work through a moment of stress or sadness. 

Friends say Haneski often starts meetings and conversations with a pause and a deep breath. She carries around a water bottle filled with glitter, kind of a homemade snow globe. She offers the bottle to kids who are stressed out. They shake it, and as the glitter settles, so do they.

It helps Haneski, too.

The students are building their resilience and sharing what they've learned with the broader community.

Tai chi and paper cranes

Feb. 14 is a day of service for Stoneman, with kids engaging in an activity of their choice.

The Mind Body Club will be hosting a tai chi session. Other groups will have letter writing and bracelet stringing tables. One club will be making paper cranes for cancer patients. Some students will volunteer with a project that creates blankets for children in need. 

Haneski has tapped back into her bubbly, lighthearted nature since the tragedy, said Yvonne Cech, the former Sandy Hook librarian: "What makes Diana so special is that she turned everything into positive energy."

Cech wasn’t surprised Haneski ended up having to take her safety advice. 

"Before this, no one could've convinced me that both of us would be in this situation, but once it happens to you, your sense of what's normal is gone," Cech said. 

The coincidence has transformed both women into reluctant school safety experts and willing advocates for stronger gun control. 

"I'm glad she had that to her advantage in her situation, but nobody should have to be prepared."

Woman formerly known as Rachel Dolezal fired from teaching gig over OnlyFans account

A former NAACP leader in Washington state who was exposed for pretending to be Black in 2015 is now making headlines for a different controversy.

Rachel Dolezal, who legally changed her name to Nkechi Diallo in 2016, was fired by the Catalina Foothills Unified School District in Arizona over her OnlyFans account, NBC News confirmed.

Her account had also made headlines in 2022, when leaked photos of her posing in lingerie circulated online.

The 18-and-up platform, which hosts millions of content creators, is known primarily as a service where sex workers share explicit photos behind a monthly paywall, although creators can share anything from cooking tutorials to fitness routines. Subscribers can also pay extra fees to receive personalized pay-per-view messages from their favorite creators.

Though the controversial figure has been active on the content subscription platform for years, the district didn’t learn of Diallo’s OnlyFans posts until Tuesday afternoon, according to Julie Farbarik, a spokesperson for Catalina Foothills Unified School District.

“Her posts are contrary to our district’s ‘Use of Social Media by District Employees’ policy,” Farbarik wrote in an email. The policy states that employees should not communicate online in a manner that’s “unprofessional” or that would “significantly and adversely impact [their] work-related reputation.”

Though the images on her page are hidden for nonsubscribers, many of the captions on her posts appear sexually suggestive.

Diallo had started with the school district in August last year as a part-time afterschool instructor working with elementary school students. She was also a substitute teacher under the district’s substitute contract provider.

She did not respond to attempts to reach her for comment made via email and Instagram direct message. Two of her listed phone numbers were out of service. 

Nearly a decade ago, after a media scandal led her to confess that she was born to white parents despite identifying as a Black woman, Diallo, then Dolezal, was forced to resign as the head of her local NAACP chapter in Spokane, Washington, and was removed from a police ombudsman commission. The controversy ignited outrage and public discourse around the concept of “race faking.”

In 2019, she accepted a plea deal after being charged with welfare fraud over allegations that she failed to report tens of thousands of dollars in revenue from her 2017 memoir, “In Full Color: Finding My Place in a Black and White World,” and other income sources, in order to collect more than $8,800 in food and child care assistance from Washington state.

Diallo has been posting to her verified OnlyFans account, which offers subscriptions of $9.99 a month, since late 2021. Her bio describes her page as a place “where I post creative content and give fans a more Intimate look into my life,” and promotes a link to her Amazon wishlist — which allows people to gift her items such as handmade soap, stiletto sandals and a teacup set.

OnlyFans did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In recent years, there have been multiple instances of teachers losing their jobs over their OnlyFans side gigs, which many creators use as a way to supplement wages from other jobs. In late 2023, one teacher was fired and another resigned in St. Louis after their school district discovered their accounts. One  told NBC Los Angeles  that the financial struggle brought on by low teaching salaries left them with little choice.
