From the Last 8 series , Vol. 1

by Laura Pohl ‧ RELEASE DATE: March 1, 2019

A sci-fi romp with ample intergalactic twists to keep readers satisfied.

“Welcome to Area 51. Home to the Last Teenagers on Earth.”

After aliens invade Earth and wipe out humanity, Clover Martinez’s world becomes an unrelenting nightmare. Six months pass following the fateful invasion. Evading the occasional alien patrol, Clover wanders the barren landscape until she discovers fellow teen survivors at the infamous Area 51. Dubbing themselves the Last Teenagers on Earth, the motley, racially diverse group hole up at the base, led by their protective leader, Violet. With concise chapters and unadorned language, Pohl’s debut favors spectacle over depth and succeeds in providing enough intrigue to carry readers from page to page. At the novel’s center is Clover, an aromantic Mexican-American girl who prefers logic over emotion. With some difficulty, Clover convinces the reluctant group to fight back against the extraterrestrial menace. But when she unearths a spaceship hidden behind the walls of Area 51 and the group manages to capture one of the aliens, Clover starts to unravel secrets and lies that are threatening to tear down her life all over again. Surprises come in waves even though the novel’s not entirely unpredictable (at least until the curious ending). The aliens—a hodgepodge of metallic limbs and humanlike features—unnerve but don’t leave much of an impression.

THE WICKED REMAIN

IF ONLY I HAD TOLD HER

by Laura Nowlin ‧ RELEASE DATE: Feb. 6, 2024

A heavy read about the harsh realities of tragedy and their effects on those left behind.

In this companion novel to 2013’s If He Had Been With Me , three characters tell their sides of the story.

Finn’s narrative starts three days before his death. He explores the progress of his unrequited love for best friend Autumn up until the day he finally expresses his feelings. Finn’s story ends with his tragic death, which leaves his close friends devastated, unmoored, and uncertain how to go on. Jack’s section follows, offering a heartbreaking look at what it’s like to live with grief. Jack works to overcome the anger he feels toward Sylvie, the girlfriend Finn was breaking up with when he died, and Autumn, the girl he was preparing to build his life around (but whom Jack believed wasn’t good enough for Finn). But when Jack sees how Autumn’s grief matches his own, it changes their understanding of one another. Autumn’s chapters trace her life without Finn as readers follow her struggles with mental health and balancing love and loss. Those who have read the earlier book will better connect with and feel for these characters, particularly since they’ll have a more well-rounded impression of Finn. The pain and anger is well written, and the novel highlights the most troublesome aspects of young adulthood: overconfidence sprinkled with heavy insecurities, fear-fueled decisions, bad communication, and brash judgments. Characters are cued white.

DIVINE RIVALS

by Rebecca Ross ‧ RELEASE DATE: April 4, 2023

Ideal for readers seeking perspectives on war, with a heavy dash of romance and touch of fantasy.

A war between gods plays havoc with mortals and their everyday lives.

In a time of typewriters and steam engines, Iris Winnow awaits word from her older brother, who has enlisted on the side of Enva the Skyward goddess. Alcohol abuse led to her mother’s losing her job, and Iris has dropped out of school and found work utilizing her writing skills at the Oath Gazette . Hiding the stress of her home issues behind a brave face, Iris competes for valuable assignments that may one day earn her the coveted columnist position. Her rival for the job is handsome and wealthy Roman Kitt, whose prose entrances her so much she avoids reading his articles. At home, she writes cathartic letters to her brother, never posting them but instead placing them in her wardrobe, where they vanish overnight. One day Iris receives a reply, which, along with other events, pushes her to make dramatic life decisions. Magic plays a quiet role in this story, and readers may for a time forget there is anything supernatural going on. This is more of a wartime tale of broken families, inspired youths, and higher powers using people as pawns. It flirts with clichéd tropes but also takes some startling turns. Main characters are assumed White; same-sex marriages and gender equality at the warfront appear to be the norm in this world.

Goodreads Summary:

Clover Martinez has always been a survivor, which is the only reason she isn't among the dead when aliens invade and destroy Earth as she knows it. When Clover hears an inexplicable radio message, she's shocked to learn there are other survivors—and that they're all at the former Area 51. When she arrives, she's greeted by a band of misfits who call themselves The Last Teenagers on Earth. Only they aren't the ragtag group of heroes Clover was expecting. The group seems more interested in hiding than fighting back, and Clover starts to wonder if she was better off alone. But then she finds a hidden spaceship, and she doesn't know what to believe…or who to trust.

Here is a spoiler summary of what happened in The Last 8 by Laura Pohl to help refresh your memory before you read the sequel. This recap was provided by the author herself, so thank you for helping everyone out, Laura!

Clover Martinez is a 17-year-old Mexican-American girl who dislikes people but likes planes. When the aliens invade Earth and kill everyone, Clover survives, continuing to dislike people even though there are considerably less of them now, and liking planes, even though if she tries to fly one, she’s shot down almost immediately by the invading alien forces.

After surviving on her own for six months, she hears a radio message that beckons her to go to Area 51 to meet other survivors (7 of them, aka, The Last Teenagers on Earth). The survivors aren’t interested in fighting, and Clover threatens them all until they agree. They fight, discover secrets, all of them are half-aliens, except one who’s an entire alien. It’s a whole thing.

Now that the short summary of what happened in The Last 8 is over, read on for the full thing!

Clover Martinez — bisexual & aromantic main character. Wannabe pilot. No time to die. Brooklyn Spencer — conspiracy theorist. Unable to shut up. Violet Deveraux — the Boss. Adam Foster — last of the white boys. Flint Rogers — likes rocks and Star Wars. Avani Sharma — only braincell of the group. Scientist.  Rayen Kindelay — owns 37 different knives. Takes no shit. Andy Walsh — local nerd.

what happened in The Last 8?

  • Clover Martinez is a 17yo Mexican-American girl who lives with her abuelos in a farm in Montana. She’s always wanted to be a pilot and dreams of an expedition to Mars. When the aliens invade, it’s Mars who come to her instead (technically not Martians, but it’s another planet. It counts).
  • Clover’s abuelo was a pilot with the Air Force and he leaves to go to the base and find out what’s happening. Clover’s stuck for a week in the farm until her ex-boyfriend, who she broke up with because she isn’t into romantic relationships, shows up half drunk and says he loves her. Clover says okay, buddy , which is slightly cruel but true.
  • Clover and Noah, the ex-boyfriend, head back to the city in the morning to get batteries for the satellite phone so Clover can talk to abuelo. When they get there, there’s a strange dust clinging to the air. They go to Noah’s house first, but it’s empty. When Clover turns around, the aliens are waiting for her.
  • The aliens kind of look like that one doll-head with metal legs from Toy Story 1. This is relevant. Kind of.
  • The aliens chase Clover and Noah down. Noah falls and they shoot at him, turning him to dust. They don’t shoot Clover. They go away.
  • Clover runs back home and doesn’t find Abuela. She gets the plane to find Abuelo, but as soon as she’s up in the air, the aliens shoot her down. She crashes into the base, which has been obliterated, and she knows everyone is dead. Clover threatens the aliens. They ignore her.
  • SIX MONTHS LATER
  • yes, indeed
  • This was not a an intended Twilight reference.
  • Clover spends the next six months surviving, still suffering obvious PTSD/depression symptoms, though she gets a Dog, which is an improvement.
  • Dog does NOT die or get harmed!!!
  • Clover and Dog find shelter and she makes questionable choices like eating peanuts when she’s mildly allergic and wearing camo, but also makes good choices, like showering.
  • In the morning, Clover encounters another alien, who still doesn’t see her. They never do.
  • Clover steals another car. She crashed the last one. And the one before that. And the one before. And the one-
  • You get the point. She flies planes, doesn’t drive.
  • Accidentally, she turns on the radio and hears a message, telling her that other survivors are in Area 51.
  • Clover crashes another car getting there. It’s not a metaphor.
  • Instead of the super warm welcome, Clover is immediately put into isolation on “Boss” orders. Clover thinks it’s an adult but spoilers: no adults left in this world. Only the 7 surviving teens left standing.
  • Clover finds out that they’re in Area 51 since the invasion, all the others died either by alien attack or the following plague. She gets closer to Brooklyn, who finally disobeys the orders and lets Clover out. They throw her a welcome party, where she tells everyone about the outside. Clover realizes they haven’t been out since the invasion and have no idea what the world looks like.
  • Clover confronts Violet, the Boss, about their plan. Violet says there is no plan to fight, unless Clover can convince her.
  • Clover stays around, gets closer to Adam, who looks a lot like her ex-boyfriend, which sends her down on a trip to guilt lane constantly.
  • Clover is still angry there is no plan to fight back, especially if they aren’t alone. She threatens everyone. They ignore her.
  • Clover steals a plane from the compound and the aliens follow her. She manages to get them off her trail. There’s a lot of plane models in this chapter, some of which the author has never seen in her entire life.
  • Adam picks Clover up after the plan, they fight. She tells him about how the aliens will always follow planes, even though they don’t care about cars. She tells this to Violet.
  • Violet decides they can fight back with a plan of capturing an alien. They start reading a lot of government files. They start talking about the alien encounters by Clover’s insistence. PLOT TWIST: they all survived because they are all invisible to the aliens.
  •  They start making the plan and still read the files. Clover discovers of a blackout, about 20 years ago, going for a full week with no information. She asks Andy about this, who knows nothing. Avani makes a machine to keep the alien sedated for when they capture it.
  • Avani tests everyone’s blood in a machine to see if there’s a reason why they can’t be seen by aliens, but the machine is broken. All the analysis show Violet’s blood.
  • Adam tries to teach her how to drive. He’s kind of flirting. Clover kind of ignores him. About flirting, but also about teaching, because she crashes right into a wall in Area 51. The wall crumbles and they find PLOT TWIST: a spaceship.
  • It isn’t a plot twist if it’s included in the synopsis, right? Still.
  • Adam and Clover decide not to tell the others about the spaceship in the basement lest Violet calls off the plan.
  • Clover convinces Adam to break into Violet’s personal files. They find a couple of files, and one dated of 20 years ago, and every page has been redacted.
  • Ah, yes, Chapter 31, the author’s personal enemy. There’s a lot of planes in this one too. I don’t know why I decided I’d write about planes.
  • They follow the plan, but it goes wrong. More aliens show up. They manage to capture an alien, Clover crashes a plane (first time!). Violet can be seen, and Adam jumps in front of her. He vanishes into dust.
  • Adam’s death takes a toll on everyone, especially Clover, who still feels guilt over her ex-boyfriend’s death. Flint and Avani dissect the alien in the lab.
  • Andy and Violet argue over the plan and Andy blames Adam’s death on Violet.
  • The alien is made up of a thousand different parts. Just like the weird baby head in Toy Story 1.
  • Flint and Clover try to use the machine to test their blood again to see if it’s still broken.
  • Rayen and Flint find out about the spaceship in the basement. Flint points out that the spaceship is different than the ones they’ve seen, which means there are 2 alien species on Earth. PLOT TWIST.
  • Violet, Brooklyn and Flint leave to get medicine. Before they leave, Avani says that the blood analysis was ready, and PLOT TWIST: the blood wasn’t human.
  • Clover goes back to the spaceship in the basement, and it finally opens. Before she can explore, Avani says that the captured alien has woken up, and its sending brain waves to his counterparts. The aliens are a hive, and they’re coming all the way to Area 51.
  • Rayen, Clover and Andy fight the invading aliens. Clover steals an alien gun which can kill the aliens. One alien seems stunned when he finds Andy, and Clover finally fits the pieces of the puzzle. PLOT TWIST: Andy is an alien.

How does The Last 8 end?

Clover and Rayen interrogate Andy to discover the truth. Andy is the last of the Universals, a powerful alien species which can bend the universe to its will. The other aliens, called Hostemn, are their enemies and they’ve engaged in an ancient war. The remaining Universals fled to Earth to hide, and the Hostemn found them. They killed all the humans to get to the Universals.

Earth tried fighting with a genetic experiment which went wrong. Only 7 survivors remained of it. PLOT TWIST: the last teenagers on earth are all human/hostemn/universal hybrids. Whew, that was the last one!

Clover tells the others and they’re devastated. Violet questions Andy about her powers, but Andy says she can’t access them unless she’s subject to an extreme emotion, and that it’s against the rules to use them. They come up with a new plan, and Brooklyn throws a party before the world ends.

The Last Teenagers on Earth head to the mother spaceship to blow it up. They’re all captured while Clover sets up a bomb, and the alien queen waits for Andy, who won’t use her powers. Violet sacrifices herself, and Andy, coming through grief, uses her powers to obliterate the alien species and bring Violet back from the dead. Together, all of them head into space to explore new worlds, to boldly go where no man (or Dog) has gone before.

anything else

Hostemn — ancient and evil alien species who invaded Earth and killed everyone. Universals — the Hostem’s enemies, capable of bending the universe to their will, changing history and events. Arc — Universal spaceship. Sputnik — Dog.

Is Justin Hartley’s CBS Series ‘Tracker’ Based on a Book?

CBS's answer to ‘Reacher’ is already a huge hit.

The Big Picture

  • The CBS series Tracker is based on Jeffery Deaver's Colter Shaw book series, starting with The Never Game .
  • While Tracker follows an episodic procedural format like other CBS shows, it incorporates elements from Deaver's novels.
  • Jeffery Deaver's previous works, such as The Bone Collector , have been successfully adapted for film and television.

With the release of the new CBS series Tracker , Justin Hartley has moved on from his previous work on the hit drama This Is Us and has found something more akin to his previous work on Smallville . While Hartley isn't playing a superhero this time around, his latest character, Colter Shaw, acts almost as if he is one. The titular tracker is a reward-seeker (though he prefers the term "rewardist") with a penchant for finding what people are looking for. The only thing he can't seem to find is what he is looking for. But before the next episode of the CBS drama, there's another question we need to address: Is Tracker based on a book?

Tracker TV Show Poster

Colter Shaw travels the country in his old-school RV to help police and private citizens solve crimes and locate missing persons until his latest case changes everything.

CBS's 'Tracker' Is Based on Jeffery Deaver's Thriller

Almost everything that gets greenlit in Hollywood these days is based on some already pre-existing material , and Tracker is no different. Though this CBS drama has the look and feel of a completely original concept, Tracker is actually based on the Colter Shaw series of novels by Jeffery Deaver , though only the first novel in the series, The Never Game , is credited. In fact, when Justin Hartley's latest television project was first announced, the original title was The Never Game , not Tracker . But, likely after the success of similar one-word title shows like Reacher or Walker , CBS opted to retool their series to fit the current trend of "er"-themed action shows. Tracker certainly fits the bill.

The original Jeffery Deaver novel follows Colter Shaw as he arrives in Silicon Valley to find a missing girl named Sophie , who he believes is likely already dead. But as he hunts for Sophie, another victim is taken, an LGBT activist named Henry Thompson. It turns out, there's actually a third victim too, and with this seemingly never-ending cycle of kidnappings, Colter is possibly in over his head. We won't spoil the ending of The Never Game here, especially if it fits into the Tracker narrative down the road, but let's just say that this action-packed suspense thriller is the perfect starting point for fans of the Colter Shaw character.

Justin Hartley, who also serves as an executive producer on the series, is thrilled to be a part of it. "I've never seen a show like this, but I read the book," he revealed to IGN ahead of the show's premiere. "[Executive Producer] Ken Olin gave me [ The Never Game ], and we looked at each other and said, 'We have to do this. We have to figure this out.' It's an actor's dream really to play a unique character." It's no wonder he was cast as Colter Shaw, because he effortlessly steals every scene he's in.

'Tracker' Has the TV Procedural Formula

Justin Hartley as Colter Shaw, holding a notecard in Tracker

But how closely does Tracker follow the original Jeffery Deaver book series? Well, unlike Reacher, which adapts a Lee Child novel every season , Tracker has taken a different approach. Though the overarching mythology behind the series has been lifted from Deaver's original novels (particularly the stories concerning the Shaw family and Colter's upbringing), the overall tone of the series is very much that of your standard CBS procedural . But that might not be a bad thing. By giving Colter a different assignment every week, the series has the opportunity to explore a plethora of different environments, groups, and types of mysteries that will put Tracker up there with all your other favorite case-of-the-week shows.

Jack-Reacher-Books

The Best 'Jack Reacher' Books, Ranked

Of course, just because Tracker isn't directly adapting The Never Game doesn't mean that the Colter Shaw books might not factor into the plot in the future . "Character-wise, there are a lot of similarities," Hartley noted about Tracker 's commitment to The Never Game and its sequels. "Story-wise, we have our own stories going on. We have sort of a case of the week kind of thing, and then laced in there are a bunch of clues as to what might've happened to Colter's family. He’s trying to sort through that and figure out who might've been involved. Maybe family was involved. Maybe the dad wasn't crazy, maybe he was onto something." However, that ends up playing out on screen, it'll no doubt be inspired by Jeffery Deaver's plot from the original novels.

Speaking of the books, thus far, Deaver has published three other novels in addition to The Never Game . The Goodbye Man , The Final Twist , and Hunting Time all continue Colter's literary journey past his 2019 debut, with a handful of companion short stories set within that same world. It's unclear if Hartley, Olin, and series creator Ben H. Winters plan on ever diving into the books for more case inspiration, but whether they do or not, Tracker is aiming to be an enjoyable weekly adventure.

'Tracker' Isn't the First Jeffery Deaver Adaptation

If Jeffery Deaver sounds familiar to you, it may be because you've seen his work on the screen before. Well, you've seen it adapted to the screen before. Deaver himself is a prolific author with an impressive catalog of novels and short stories under his belt, but in addition to The Never Game inspiring the CBS series Tracker , Deaver's work has been the basis for a handful of other film and television projects . The most famous of these might be the Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie film, The Bone Collector , which was adapted from Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme novel of the same name. In fact, The Bone Collector was adapted again in 2020 for the short-lived NBC series Lincoln Rhyme: Hunt for the Bone Collector , which starred Russell Hornsby (who had previously worked with Denzel Washington on Fences ) in the titular role.

In addition to The Bone Collector , Deaver's A Maiden's Grave was the basis for the HBO film Dead Silence , which starred James Garner as FBI Special Agent John Potter. In 2010, The Devil's Teardrop was also adapted into a made-for-TV feature for Lifetime. While The Bone Collector might be among Deaver's most notable works due to the popular film adaptation, there's no denying that Colter Shaw is one of his greatest protagonists . Who knows, maybe one day Jeffrey Deaver's most recent protagonist will become a household name. The Super Bowl sure helped the series to kick off with an impressive 18 million viewers , and here's hoping most of them stick around.

Tracker airs on Thursdays on CBS and can be streamed exclusively on Paramount+.

'the taste of things' is a sizzling romance and foodie feast — but don't go in hungry.

Juliette Binoche prepares one elaborate dish after another in The Taste of Things. Stéphanie Branchu/IFC Films Release hide caption

Juliette Binoche prepares one elaborate dish after another in The Taste of Things.

I first saw The Taste of Things at 8:30 in the morning at a Cannes Film Festival press screening last year. Like a lot of other journalists, I walked in jet-lagged, bleary-eyed — and hopeful that what I was about to see would, at the very least, keep me awake. It did, and then some.

In the opening moments, as I watched Juliette Binoche putter about a rustic 19th-century French kitchen, whipping eggs for an omelet, my stomach began to rumble, and I wished I'd had more for breakfast than an espresso. In time I was not only fully alert but held rapt as Binoche prepared one elaborate, mouth-watering dish after another: a roasted veal loin, a milk-poached turbot, a shimmering baked Alaska.

For about 40 minutes, she cooks and cooks and cooks in a gorgeously directed sequence that plays out with very few words and no music — just the sounds of sizzling butter, bubbling broth and utensils scraping against crockery.

George RR Martin asked to finish book series as he says three 'Game of Thrones'-based animated projects are in development

S ANTA FE, NEW MEXICO: George RR Martin, the mastermind behind the iconic book series, 'A Song of Ice and Fire', has stirred buzz among 'Game of Thrones' enthusiasts as he shared updates about three animated series to be based on the fantasy universe.

Among other things, the author made headlines for being part of a group of prominent writers who filed a lawsuit against Open AI , alleging that its success and profitability hinge on widespread copyright infringement without obtaining permission or providing compensation to the rightful owners.

George RR Martin unveils plans for animated series based on GOT universe

According to a report from Variety , Martin recently expressed his admiration for Netflix's animated series 'Blue Eye Samurai' after attending a screening. In a blog post, he commended the work of Amber Noizumi and Michael Green and shared exciting updates about his ventures into animation.

Delving into his projects, Martin revealed, "As it happens, HBO and I have our own animated projects, set in the world of 'A Song Of Ice & Fire.' None of them have been greenlit yet, but I think we are getting close to taking the next step with a couple of them."

Variety reported that the author disclosed the existence of several writers' rooms, scripts, and outlines for the animated projects. Unfortunately, two out of the four projects were "shelved," as explained by Martin.

Undeterred, he continues to work on the remaining two animated projects.

In a surprising turn, Martin announced, "We have moved ‘Nine Voyages,' our series about the legendary voyages of the Sea Snake, over from live action to animation."

He added, "A move I support fully. Budgetary constraints would likely have made a live-action version prohibitively expensive, what with half the show taking place at sea, and the necessity of creating a different port every week, from Driftmark to Lys to the Basilisk Isles to Volantis to Qarth to… well, on and on and on."

Martin shared his support for the shift to animation, stating, "There's a whole world out there. And we have a lot better chance of showing it all with animation. So we now have three animated projects underway."

Fans ask George RR Martin to finish his book series as he announces animated projects

Soon after Martin's announcement regarding the animated series based on 'A Song Of Ice & Fire' came to light, fans of 'Game of Thrones' asked him to finish the book series as two more are yet to be published.

One wrote, "Finish the damn books," while another added, "This is why we shouldn't give authors TV series until they finish the actual books."

A person remarked, "He's never finishing the books," with someone saying, "Could he not just go away at this point? I'm sick to death of hearing about all of his projects except the one that his fans want him to finish the most."

Cormoran Strike: when will book eight be released?

Find out everything to know about the return to jk rowling's cormoran strike.

Holliday and Tom in Strike

JK Rowling is currently working on the eighth novel of the Strike novels - but when can we expect it to be released? Find out everything we know so far about book number eight…

The author, whose pen name for the novel series is Robert Galbraith, recently released the series’ widely praised seventh novel, The Running Grave, in September 2023. Despite this very recent publication, she has confirmed that she was working on book eight in early 2023. Following the last novel’s publication, a fan asked about progress on the new one, to which she replied on Twitter/X: “I've been working on it this afternoon!” In May 2023, she also answered a fan who enjoyed the books, writing: "That's a very lovely thing read after six hours solid work on Strike 8!"

Joanne also confirmed that things were “getting on very well” after revealing a script read for the BBC adaptation of the series in January 2024. She also revealed a hint about the book while recently sharing fan art, writing: “Indeed, happy birthday Strike. He's just turned 42 in book eight, where I'm currently working.

Robin and Cormoran have a 'will-they-won't-they' relationship

“The fan art here is fantastic and very close to the Strike I have in my head, but this is not to say I don't love Tom Burke in the role, because I very much do!”

So when will we be seeing the book on our shelves? Although there is no publication date just yet, taking a look back at the show’s previous publication dates could give us an indication of when to expect it.

Are you ready for book number 8?

The Cuckoo’s Calling, The Silkworm and Career of Evil were all released one year apart, before a longer break between the third novel and Lethal White, which came out three years later in 2018. The books then had a two-year gap with Troubled Blood being published in 2020 and The Ink Black Heart in 2022, while The Running Grave was released just one year later in 2023. In short, we think it’s reasonable to predict that the book could be published anywhere between late 2024 to 2026.

The Running Grave was released in September 2023

Joanne has revealed that she plans to write “at least” ten novels in the series, which follows private detectives Cormoran Strike and Robin Ellacott as they solve crimes in London. Speaking to the BBC about her plans, she explained: “The first time I met Tom [Burke, who plays Strike], I said, ‘Well I hope to God you do enjoy playing this character because I think I’ve got at least another 10 books in me, so you could be locked in for quite a few years her.’"

The sixth season of the hit show will be based on The Ink Black Heart, and is currently in production.
