How To Reach a Human at Experian, TransUnion or Equifax

From time to time, you may need to get in touch with the three major credit bureaus – Experian , TransUnion and Equifax – for various reasons, including freezing your credit , which money expert Clark Howard believes is the best way to protect your identity.

One issue you may run into when contacting the credit bureaus is reaching a real person.

In this article, I’m going to share with you the steps you can take to reach human beings at the three major credit bureaus.

At Clark.com, we call each of them periodically to stay current on their processes for reaching a real person.

In January 2023, I documented the steps as well as the wait times it took for me to talk to a real person at the following credit bureaus:

Wait times may be longer if you call during peak hours, so try to call early in the day. Also, note that each of the credit bureaus has several phone numbers, each for different issues. What I’ve detailed below is the quickest way I was able to reach a real person .

All the credit bureaus route callers to self-service options. Even after reaching a real person , he or she may have to put you on hold to get you to the department you need.

How to reach Experian customer service phone number

  • Experian phone number : Experian’s official customer service number is: 1-888-EXPERIAN (1-888-397-3742). But I called 888-888-8553 to talk to a human.
  • How to reach a real person : Bypass the prompts that try to route you to the website or automated self-serve by choosing the “other questions” option.
  • Total wait time : Less than 5 minutes

Detailed steps on how to reach a live person at Experian : Enter your Social Security number to confirm your identity.

You’ll be asked, “Would you like to remove the freeze on your credit file now?” If you say yes, you’ll be routed to a self-serve process. I said no.

The automated voice will say: “In a few words, why are you calling today?” It gave me the option to press 9 to hear my choices and that’s what I did. At the end of the prompt, it will say, “For other questions, 6.” I pressed 6.

It will give you a choice to choose credit questions or membership questions. Listen to the list of prompts and soon it will say, “For other membership questions, press 6.” I pressed 6 again.

After that, I was briefly put on hold and then connected to a real person at Experian in just a few minutes.

How to reach a live person at Experian, TransUnion and Equifax

  • TransUnion phone number: The official customer care number for TransUnion is 1-800-916-8800, and that’s the number I called to get to a real person.
  • How to reach a real person: Answer the voice prompts and wait to be connected.
  • Total wait time: Less than 3 minutes

Details on how to reach a live person at TransUnion: To speak to a human at TransUnion, I had to speak to an automated voice, but first I had to enter my mailing ZIP Code.

After answering those questions to verify my identity, I was prompted to state the purpose of my call. A few times I called, I said “Dispute” and was connected to a real person. A couple of times after that, I said “Agent” and was also connected to a human.

  • Equifax Phone number : While Equifax’s official customer service phone number is 1-800-846-5279, I found the easiest path to reach a real human is to call this number: 1-866-640-2273 .
  • How to reach a real person : Press 4, then press 1.
  • Total wait time : 4 minutes

Details on how to reach a live person at Equifax : The call will start with some introductory promotions. You’ll hear a menu with five options. You’ll be prompted to:

  • Press 1 to speak to an automated voice about online assistance with changing or disputing your Equifax credit report, placing or removing a security freeze or information regarding your free credit report.
  • Press 2 for login help
  • Press 3 to cancel a product
  • Press 4 to speak to a product specialist
  • Press 5 if you’re having trouble enrolling for a product

If you don’t press anything, it may connect you to a real person in a few second s. If not, here’s what to do: Press 4: You’ll be forwarded to an agent shortly.

After calling multiple times, I found that pressing 4 was the quickest way to reach a human. I also reached a live person by pressing 1, but it took longer.

You may also get the following option: “If you’d like to receive a callback rather than wait on hold, press 1 now. You will not lose your place in line.”

How to Talk to a Live Human at the Credit Bureaus

To speak with a real human operator at each of the three main credit bureaus for help with general credit questions, you can call the following phone numbers along with their respective phone prompts.

Following each of those prompts, your call will be transferred then you’ll have to wait on hold until a customer service representative is available.

It’s helpful to understand your rights under the Fair Credit Reporting Act when you call the credit bureaus to discuss your concerns. Below you will find a summary of the common reason people call along with links to articles and other resources that help you gain the knowledge you need to resolve your issues as quickly and conveniently as possible. One important note – the credit bureaus are obligated by law to assist you with many of these services for free, but your credit score is not something they are required to provide you at no cost.

Credit Report

Having access to your credit report and score is an important part of being financially fit. Your credit report provides detailed information about your financial track record, including current and past credit accounts, such as credit cards, loans, mortgages, and other debts.

Credit entries in your credit report also contain information about your balances, both past and present, your payment history, creditor inquiries into your credit, and any negative marks, like bankruptcy, foreclosure, collections accounts, or court judgment against you. Knowing what’s included in your credit report helps you better understand how to improve your credit if needed, and it allows you to spot fraudulent or inaccurate activity related to your financial accounts.

Each of the three credit bureaus is required to provide you with a free copy of your credit report each year . You have this right once every 12 months through Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. The credit bureaus have made the process relatively simple, creating an online platform to obtain your annual credit report for free. You can visit AnnualCreditReport.com to retrieve your credit report for one or all of the credit bureaus when you are ready.

If you don’t want to go through the process of requesting your credit reports online, you also have the option to call 1-877-322-8228 to request it over the phone. The caveat is that you don’t get continuous access to your credit report and won’t receive your credit score through AnnualCreditReport.com. It is a one-time credit report-only service that could be out of date by the time you receive it if you receive your report by mail.

Credit Score

Your credit score is a three-digit number that acts as a gauge of how financially responsible you have been in the past, letting creditors know quickly if you are a good candidate for a new credit account. Having a high credit score means you are likely a low-risk borrower while having a low credit score means you raise some red flags with potential new creditors. Keeping your credit score in good shape is also a necessary part of financial stability, but it can be challenging to know how to accomplish that task. It helps to start with an understanding of how credit scores are calculated.

Your credit score is based on the information found in your credit report, with the following categories contributing to your FICO score calculation :

  • Payment history – 35% of your score calculation
  • Balances owed versus available credit – 30%
  • Length of credit history – 15%
  • New credit – 10%
  • Types of credit accounts used – 10%

Currently, the most common types of credit scores used in evaluating your credit risk include VantageScore and FICO Score . VantageScore is used by many different free credit score providers, such as some banks, credit unions, and credit card issuers, but it is gaining popularity among lenders as well. Your VantageScore credit score may be different from the more widely used FICO score, but the factors that determine the calculation are very similar.

Your FICO credit score is derived from the same information found in your credit reports, but the company behind this scoring method is the Fair Isaac Corporation. This credit score is the one used by the majority of lenders to evaluate your level of risk as a borrower or new account holder.

The credit bureaus are not obligated to provide you access to your credit scores – only your credit reports. However, you can view your credit scores from each of the three bureaus by requesting them directly through Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion. You may also have access to a free credit score (typically VantageScore) through your credit card company or bank. Other services also offer access to your credit score for free after you sign up for an account online.

There are also credit scores for businesses , commonly accessed through Nav.com .

Credit Lock

The credit bureaus also must provide certain tools for you to better manage your identity and credit profiles over time, although these tools do not have to be offered at no cost. A credit lock is one method to help safeguard your credit report and ultimately, your credit score.

Through a credit lock, you can quickly lock down your credit information with a specific credit bureau, either through a simple online website or mobile app request or swipe. Taking this simple step means that creditors cannot access your credit information with that credit bureau, which helps stop new accounts from being established. If you need to unlock your credit, you can do that with a quick swipe or online click too.

Credit locks are offered by the three major credit bureaus. Equifax and TransUnion offer the credit lock option at no cost; however, they both have built this feature into a bundle of products that range in price and include other services like creditor monitoring and access to your credit score.

Experian is the only credit bureau that charges for a credit lock. The cost of $4.99 for the first month, and then $24.99 each month after that. If you want to fully lock your credit you will have to lock it with each credit bureau individually.

Credit Freeze

A credit freeze is another option you can use to protect your credit report. Like a credit lock, it shuts down access to your credit information so that new potential creditors cannot check your report or open new accounts.

However, a credit freeze is governed by federal law, giving you more protection than a credit lock. If an account is established in your name or another identity theft activity takes place, you have certain rights under the law not provided by a credit lock. Also, all credit bureaus are required to offer a credit freeze at no cost to consumers.

The process of establishing a credit freeze is done through each of the credit bureaus independently, either by mail, over the phone, or online. When creating a credit freeze, you will be required to establish a secure account, either with a password, a personal identification number, or both.

The security credit freeze is in place until you “thaw” it, which is done by contacting the credit bureaus and providing your password and/or PIN. Thawing a credit freeze can be more cumbersome than a credit lock, but again, the process offers more protection to you as the consumer.

Fraud Alert

Another way the credit bureaus offer protection to you is through a fraud alert . Typically, a fraud alert is something you place on your credit reports with each of the credit bureaus if you have been the victim of identity theft. If your wallet, your credit card, or other personal and financial information is compromised, a fraud alert makes it more difficult for another person to establish a new account in your name.

Placing a fraud alert on your credit report is done by contacting one of the three credit bureaus. It is free, and the bureau you contact must inform the other two about the alert. Businesses are required to then take extra steps to verify your identity when you want to open a new account. A fraud alert stays on your account for one year, making it less of a protection than a credit lock or a credit freeze.

Disputing Items

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, the three credit bureaus are required to provide an avenue for correcting inaccurate information found in your credit report. There are cases when lenders and other creditors get information wrong, alongside instances of the credit bureaus making a mistake. When this happens, the only way for you to know is by checking your credit reports. Once an error is found, you have remedies for getting it corrected directly through each credit bureau.

Disputing a credit report entry can be frustrating, but it is necessary to keep your credit in good standing. Your first step is to report the incorrect information to each credit bureau, in writing, along with documentation of why the information is wrong. You can submit credit report disputes online with each of the three credit bureaus, and they have 30 days to investigate. If they find that the data you provided is accurate, the entry is corrected or removed. The results of your dispute must be provided in writing once complete.

Identity Theft

Each year, millions of Americans experience a compromise of their personal and financial data, and in some cases, this compromise leads to identity theft. When you are the victim of identity theft, it is necessary to take certain steps to protect your credit information from being further damaged. You will need to contact the three credit bureaus to report your identity theft and follow the steps mentioned above to place a credit freeze, a credit lock, or a fraud alert on your reports.

To help prevent identity theft, you can utilize identity theft protection services . These types of services provide a constant review of your credit reports and other sensitive data to determine if and when your identity is at risk. You receive real-time alerts when there may be an issue with your personal information, and you can then take the appropriate steps to stop it or reduce the damage that may come from it.

Credit Repair

Having access to your credit report along with options for protecting your identity are key components of your financial life. However, there are situations where your credit takes a hit. Missed payments, bankruptcy, court judgments, liens, or overspending through credit cards and loans can create a negative credit profile in a hurry. If you’re struggling to manage your credit and get it back on the right path, the credit bureaus won’t do much for you above and beyond correcting legitimate errors. When you need extra help, credit repair may be a viable solution.

Credit repair companies offer services to help you improve your credit over time. Instead of having to deal with the credit bureaus alone as it relates to negative entries, credit repair companies take on the work for you. In exchange for a monthly fee, a credit repair company will fight on your behalf to get negative items removed, helping improve your credit.

If someone stole your daughter’s don’t worry about it; you have already notified the credit reporting agencies as it is proof here. The first thing she should do is call the Police and get a police report and “get that report number” so you have “reference proof” then call your credit card company and they will cancel all cards and send you another in the mail. An ID or License can always be replaced and IF THEY TRY TO USE YOUR ID, IT WILL BE FLAGGED AS STOLEN and all places ask ID if the card does not fit the signature. WHAT EVER HAPPEN TO TALKING TO A LIVE PERSON ON THE PHONE. Not someone on live chat. Tried to do a transaction on the phone but made an error. Tried to correct the problem but it would not let me. So tried several numbers so I could speak to someone who could help me correct it .BUT GUESS WHAT KEPT GETTING THE SAME RECORDING. I paid my credit of Truworths Account and Mr Price Account in full last months. The balance owing is R0.00 to both of them. But when I visited the bank to get credit. They said I still have credit that I did not paid in Credit Bureau. When I contact credit I found out that a credit flag for the Truworths and Mr Price. I contact the two shops for settlement letter. they said they will not give me settlement letter. But they will send Credit Bureau to clear the credit off. But it disadvantages myself cause I have to wait for them to clear on their time. Without concern about me cause I am in need of urgent loan at the bank.

Hi Mary, I’m really sorry for the inconvenience. Unfortunately, a lot of numbers have been changing due to COVID-19 and companies changing the way they do business. I have updated them with verified fax numbers; however, they were very difficult to locate as the credit bureaus have been shying away from using fax machines for consumer services. It is recommended you do not send unsolicited information to them via facsimile as they keep making it harder too.

Those fax numbers listed above aren’t correct. I just spent 20 minutes trying to fax those numbers and none of them are fax numbers.

Hi Peter, you can get your TransUnion and Equifax VantageScore credit scores for free through Credit Karma and your Experian FICO credit score for free through Experian’s website . Or you can get all three scores through Identity Guard which frequently offers discounts on three credit bureau monitoring.

Hi Nena, you can’t stop people from trying to apply for credit in your husbands name, but you can tell each of the credit bureaus he is deceased . In this case it sounds like Experian is already aware of that and denied them credit – exactly how it’s supposed to work! 🙂

How do I take care of an issue where someone has tried to use my deceased’s husband credit rating to open a “Jared The Galleria of Jewelry” credit card? I received a letter from the jewelry store stating that the request couldn’t be process because the credit reporting agency EXPERIAN indicated the person making the request was deceased. Hi Ava, If it was a chapter 7 bankruptcy, it should fall off some time this year – 10 years after it was discharged.

My have paid in full effective my Gisela grunwald attorneys on 14/01/2019 and I have the letter from magistrate court for the district ,specifically indicating I have fully paid why is it still on my credit report as active.

Hi Michelle, Depending how it is reported on your credit report there isn’t likely anything you can do. You will have to wait until it falls off after 7 years following the filing date.

I have recently had a dismissal of a garnishment. The problem is it still on my credit reports.I have mail in all court papers that shows this dismissal. What is the next step to get this remove. Talking to the creditor is not an option.

Why can’t I contract Transunion and Experian directly to fix my credit, (only one small thing is jeopardizing my credit. Hi Maggie, I’m sorry to hear that. At bare minimum I’d create a fraud alert, but may want to take addition steps such as freezing your child’s credit, and filing an identity theft report with the FTC. This article will help with all of those steps.

I was trying to get the address to all three bureaus to send them a payoff letter or warrent of cancellation letter, Euifax answered and gave me their address but the other two kept me on hold I had to hangup after 30 minutes. Hi Carolyn, I’m sorry to hear that. The credit bureaus won’t necessarily tell you why you were turned down, they just provide you with a copy of your credit report. If it’s been more than a year you can request a fresh credit report from all three credit bureaus, but if less than a year you’ll only be entitled to a free credit report from the credit bureau that was used by the lender. Also, that is the only credit bureau you’ll get a free credit “score” from as well. By law, the lender is obligated to provide you with the main reasons why your loan was denied and credit score used, if you ask within 60 days.

I’m not sure there’s anything you can do to rush them other than pay for your credit report and score through one of their credit monitoring offers. I haven’t read all the comments yet so I don’t know if this has ever come up. One of the credit reporting agencies has mixed up my husband and our older son, who both have similar names but not absolutely identical IE son has a middle initial but husband doesn’t. My husband has been impacted by two major credit hacking incidents in the past threes years and got compiled credit reports for a year, which is how we found out that ALL of the agencies now have the same incorrect info. Hi John, I’m sorry I’ve never been asked that question before. I’m going to say there’s probably not a difference in the eyes of the credit bureaus. Just to be safe I’d close it myself….if you’re that worried about it. At this point will they let you keep it if you start using it? Why not just buy something every so often and pay it off each time before it incurs interest? That’s what I do, unless it’s a really bad card.

I have what I thought was a fairly simple question but I can’t seem to get a consistent, straight answer from any of the credit bureaus. Perhaps someone here knows the answer or can point me in the right direction: I have a very high credit score and I have a number of credit cards that I dont use. I received a letter from one of the banks informing me that they were going to be closing one of my cards due to inactivity. From what I’ve read, closing credit card accounts can lower your credit score. What I’m wondering is, does it make any difference whether the bank closes the account (credit report would show something like “account closed by credit issuer” or if I close the account first (credit report would show something like “account closed by customer” I realize that my score will go down either way, but I’m concerned that if the bank closes my account, it might reflect badly on my credit report.

I needed to talk to a real person. I was able to reach a person at Transunion but he was extremely difficult to understand, but I was able to have my questions answered. Experian by far had the BEST support and was the most helpful. Equifax was no help at all. I was never able to reach a real person and still have questions and do not know where to turn. However, you should probably listen too and follow the appropriate prompts at those three numbers first. If you aren’t satisfied and weren’t able to speak to a live customer service representative, try by calling back and pressing the buttons I mentioned above.

Hi Chris, have you tried calling them? Otherwise, you’ll probably have the most luck mailing them explaining your situation. I would send them everything required to lift a credit freeze normally, and explain why you don’t have a PIN. We’ve outlined the steps for lifting a security freeze here .

Frustrated when I was continually directed to contact 3 different #’s (888-397-3742, 877-222-0011, 877-322-8228) ALL of these numbers failed to let me speak to an actual person. Hi Rommel, it really depends on the type of debt. Are they past-due accounts? Collections? Or simply balances on good debt that you’ve paid down to zero?

In general, your creditors should notify the credit bureaus within 30 days that the debt has been paid and your score should change within 60 days.

Unless you are filing a dispute, the credit bureaus will most likely just wait for the creditors to report that the balance has been paid.

Companies do not share that information, they each use thier own either from answers you’ve given in the past or based off your credit report. So it really depends on who you’re trying to contact.

It also depends on which chapter of bankruptcy you filed. You really should contact them directly to discuss your particular situation. Each credit bureau made need different information from you. It really depends on what your inquiry is regarding. For most services, they only allow existing customers to contact a representative. If you’re an existing customer with a credit report, please check your credit report for their consumer services number or log in to your account for additional contact information.

Otherwise, they do allow you to use their automated system, chat with them online or message them via their email form.

I have always been told that you can get a FREE credit report at least once a year, (I was told every 6 month’s) I can not get one. Does any one know how I can get one at NO COST!!! I am just not some one that lies! Since these two major thing’s have happened in our 33 year’s of paying taxes, we did fall behind, and our credit now stinks. We are just now starting to get on our feet, we are so far behind in EVERY THING just trying to catch up on property taxes is hard but we are working on it every month. Our basement flooded and now I do not even know who we owe and I know some of the things on our report are wrong or not been taken off, but even trying to get some one that the gov. is suppose to offer for FREE ends up costing. our credit went from the 800’s to 578. we can not even get a credit card or lower our mortgage due to this which would cut our house payment almost in 1/2 because we are paying 6% intrest when we could be paying 3 or 4 THIS IS NOT FAIR OR RIGHT!!! we want to get back to where we use to be, but thing’s in life do happen that we have no control of and when you try to fix thing’s and try to get thing’s back on track, no one want’s to help you at all. I use to believe in AMERICA and be PROUD to live here, but since this has happened, and we have went through every single dime we had to try to just stay afloat, no one will even offer us help to get back on track. I do not know where to start! or even where to begin! if ANYONE has any ideas I would be SO GRATEFUL TO YOU!!! talking to these credit bureaus is a JOKE, ALL you get is recording’s. I want to put ALL our bill’s in to one and pay them off with one monthly payment which I THINK we may be able to do IF I could find this so called FREE GOV. COUNSELING HELP, THEY ARE SO CALLED OFFERING, WHICH I CAN NOT DO. THANK’S FOR LISTING, AND ANY HELP FROM ANY ONE, I COULD NOT TELL YOU HOW GRATEFUL I WOULD BE. i reported via a phone conversation with experian nearly a year ago that while applying for a visa card all three agencies report me as deceased. i obviously am alive or i wouldn’t be typing this. the experian person i talked to said the matter would be investigated (in a heavily foreign voice) and i would be notified of the results. nearly a year later i am still listed as deeceased in their reports. any suggestions??

It is very deceiving when you list phone numbers for a credit bureau and what you get when you call is “The Fair Credit Bureau” who wants to sell you some fraud protection for all three agencies before you even know if you need it. This is what happened when calling the first number you have listed for Experian. My general question was never answered. People should know who they are calling!

These websites are not helpful for someone who need to talk to a person. My daughter is in New York with on phone, her wallet was stolen and I need her credit alert on. No help!

How to dispute the information in your report

If you find information in your consumer report that you believe is inaccurate or incomplete, you have the legal right to dispute the report’s content with the consumer reporting company and the company that shared the information to the reporting company, such as your lender. Under the FCRA, companies must conduct – free of charge – a reasonable investigation of your dispute. The company that has provided the incorrect information must correct the error, and notify all of the consumer reporting companies to whom it provided the inaccurate information.

While contacting a company is usually a straightforward process, reaching Experian can actually be kind of tricky. None of the numbers they list on the main website lead to one-on-one assistance, although they can be quite helpful if you’re simply looking for some general information. To get personal help, you can call Experian’s corporate office and then wait for the automated menu to redirect you. You can also reach out to Experian through email or social media. Keep in mind that you cannot receive your credit scores by contacting Experian directly. All requests for a credit score update must be made through their website or in the mail.

Calling Experian to Talk to a Person

Step 1 Dial 1-714-830-7000 to call the Experian corporate office.

  • The automated system will fail to find your information even when you enter it correctly, so don’t hang up or get frustrated if the menu prompts fail to identify you.
  • This number will help you reach someone to assist you with your questions or concerns, but it is advertised on their corporate website as their office number.
  • The corporate office is available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PST.

Step 2 Press 1 on your keypad if you’re a consumer; press 2 if you’re a client or business.

Tip: If you press 2, you are immediately redirected to a support specialist that services businesses and clients.

Step 3 Enter a social security number and ZIP code if you pressed 1.

  • It may ask you to enter the numeric portion of your street address. To do this, simply press the numbers that correspond with your street. For example, if you live on 2000 Main Street, type 2000 on your keypad.

Step 4 Wait for the menu to redirect you to talk to a consumer support specialist.

  • The support specialist will be able to answer questions or concerns that you may have about your credit score. They may not be able to release certain information over the phone though.

Calling Another Number to Get Automated Assistance

Step 1 Dial 1-888-397-3742 to use Experian’s victim assistance system.

  • If you think you might be a victim of identity theft, you should contact Equifax and TransUnion as well. Call 1-800-525-6285 to reach Equifax’s fraud division, and call 1-800-680-7289 to reach TransUnion’s fraud division.
  • If you have been the victim of identity theft, contact the police immediately.

Warning: If you try to get a credit report through this number, it will play an announcement asking you to write a letter to the Experian headquarters with your personal information and a written request for your credit score. There is no way to check your credit by calling Experian.

Step 2 Call 1-877-284-7942 to use Experian’s consumer care system.

  • You can get information on how to change your membership information through this system if you have moved or changed your name.
  • The automated menu in the customer care system will only redirect you to victim assistance system if it can’t find your information.
  • If you select the fraud reporting option, you will be redirected to the victim assistance system.

Step 3 Dial 1-224-698-5600 if you aren’t sure which automated menu you need.

  • Unlike the other numbers, this automated menu will start by asking if you want information regarding your credit score or to speak with an operator. The operator option will only lead to the automated menus though.
  • Their main corporate office will redirect you to one-on-one live support. This corporate office will not.

Reaching out on Social Media or Email

Step 1 Email support@experiandirect.com for general inquiries.

  • Experian will not respond to inquiries regarding a specific individual’s credit score through email.
  • Keep in mind that even though email is casual if you use it in a business situation, you should follow the format of a formal written letter.
  • If you send an attachment, see if it is correct before sending.

Step 2 Comment on an Experian Facebook post to get assistance.

  • Experian’s Facebook page is much more active than their Twitter profile, so try using Facebook first before jumping over to Twitter.

Step 3 Tweet or send direct messages to @Experian on Twitter.

Tip: The posts on Experian’s Facebook page and their Twitter profile are different, which means they may have different teams of employees running them. If you don’t get a response on one platform, you may have better luck on the other.

Credit Report Error Complaints Surge. Here’s Why You Should Check Yours.

These mistakes are the leading cause of complaints to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Here’s how to check your report and fix mistakes if you find them.

After the shock of losing her job, Lisa Hill-Green of Richmond, Va., struggled to pay her bills. In an effort to bring down her costs, she went to her mortgage lender for a loan modification. But then she faced a second shock: The bank denied the request, according to a lawsuit she later filed, saying her Experian credit report showed that her home was being used not as a primary residence but as a commercial mailing and marketing business. The problem: It wasn’t true. 

Hill-Green filed a dispute with Experian to get the inaccurate information removed from her credit report. But according to the lawsuit, which was a class action on behalf of herself and the approximately 10 million other consumers affected by the same problem, Experian refused to fully investigate why the incorrect information was on her report to begin with, and then failed to remove it. This was the case even after Hill-Green demonstrated that the business had been operated by someone else at her address before she purchased the home and was legally no longer in operation.

The company settled for a reported $22.5 million in 2023. As part of the settlement, Experian denied any wrongdoing, and said it was one of the largest class action settlements for credit reporting errors it had ever paid.

Hill-Green is one of hundreds of thousands of consumers each year who struggle to get errors removed from their credit reports. In fact, for the past three years, having incorrect information on a report has been the No. 1 complaint made to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, according to CFPB data compiled by Consumer Reports. What’s more, the number of complaints about credit report errors more than doubled in recent years, from 165,129 in 2021 to 443,321 in 2023, according to CR’s figures. 

“Credit reports are a person’s financial lifeline,” says Ryan Reynolds, financial policy analyst for Consumer Reports, who conducted the analysis. “Having incorrect information on a report, whether it’s other people’s information, lines of credit listed in duplicate, or paid-off debt appearing as unpaid, can stop a person from getting needed credit or a loan, renting an apartment, getting affordable insurance, or even landing a job.” 

Because credit reports have a growing importance in a person’s financial life, people may be checking their credit reports more often, says Chi Chi Wu, staff attorney at the National Consumer Law Center (NCLC), who specializes in credit reporting. “The stakes are a lot higher, and when that happens, people are going to be more cognizant, check their credit reports, and file complaints.”

Why Are There So Many Disputes?

Increasingly, the big three credit bureaus—Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion—use an automated decision-making process (in lieu of human employees) to screen initial consumer disputes to determine whether they meet their criteria for further investigation, according to a 2023 report by the CFPB on credit report errors. 

The problem is that automated systems may mistakenly dismiss disputes made to the credit bureaus that should in fact be investigated. According to consumer complaints made to the CFPB that were highlighted in their report, some people received automated denials of their disputes within hours.

This likely partly explains the rising number of complaints, CR’s Reynolds says, because a consumer is more likely to file a grievance after having problems getting errors fixed. 

The industry blames another factor: social media influencers and credit repair companies that tell consumers to file CFPB complaints if there is a negative item on their credit report, whether it’s in error or not, says Sheila Greenwood, spokesperson for the Consumer Data Industry Association, which represents the three big credit bureaus. 

In any event, the biggest problem is that the responsibility for ensuring the accuracy of reports falls on individual consumers, says Anjali Sakaria, chief advocacy officer at WorkMoney, a nonprofit that helps consumers with their finances. “What I don’t see happening are the credit bureaus taking responsibility to make sure that their reports are free from errors.”

Why It’s Important to Check Your Credit Report

About 13 percent of consumers have errors that affect their credit scores, the number that’s created using the information found in the report, says the NCLC’s Wu. But 5 percent have errors serious enough to cause a credit denial or raise interest rates. “That sounds like a very small number, but it equals about 10 million people.” 

One way to keep that kind of mistake from causing problems for you is to check your report every few months so you can catch it early, Wu says. The good news: The three credit bureaus announced last year that they’ll provide free weekly credit reports via AnnualCreditReport.com . 

CR has partnered with WorkMoney to launch Credit Checkup , a project designed to encourage consumers to check their reports and to provide guidance on what to do if they find mistakes. To help gather data on credit report errors, download your report, review it for errors, and tell us about your experience, Reynolds says.

If you find errors, also take steps to get them fixed and let us know how the credit bureaus responded. Data gathered from Credit Checkup participants will be analyzed for a report that will be shared with lawmakers and industry to inform their understanding of consumers’ experiences—and frustrations—Reynolds says. 

Also, take the time to “freeze” your credit, a spokesperson from the CFBP told CR. It can prevent new fraudulent accounts from being opened in your name. Do this by going to each of the three credit bureau websites, logging in to your account, and setting it to “freeze.” (Note that you’ll need to unfreeze your account if you wish to apply for a loan or credit.)

How to Fix Credit Report Errors

The Fair Credit Reporting Act gives consumers the right to review their credit report and dispute incorrect information—and even to sue credit bureaus if they refuse to remove a mistake. Once a dispute has been filed, by law, credit bureaus must respond with a decision within 30 days. Here’s how to handle the process.

File a dispute with each of the three credit bureaus. That’s because Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion don’t communicate with one another. Filing a dispute with each credit bureau, instead of the lender or bank, offers protections governing how quickly it must be handled. It also provides a legal pathway to sue the credit bureaus and creditors or collectors, if necessary. 

Include all evidence. Consider adding account statements or payment records, for example, to a dispute for debt that’s reported incorrectly. Credit bureaus can dismiss as “frivolous” claims that don’t have enough backup information. And if you try to resubmit the dispute a second time with the added information, it may be automatically denied if it’s considered too similar to a previous one.

Create a paper trail. Write a letter explaining the problem. Need some help? The Federal Trade Commission provides a free example letter . Avoid using standardized online forms provided by the credit bureaus’ websites, which might oversimplify your dispute by requiring you to choose among predetermined check boxes. Plus, by submitting your dispute online, you could unwittingly waive your right to sue as an individual or in a class action. 

Send all materials by certified mail. Keep copies for yourself. This makes it easier to confirm that the credit bureaus follow the lawful timelines. Credit bureaus have five days to get the disputed information to the financial institution or debt collector that supplied the information. If that company doesn’t investigate and respond to the dispute in time, the credit bureaus are legally required to delete the information. And you should learn the result within 30 days of filing.

If Your Dispute Is Denied

File a complaint with the CFPB. Fill out the CFPB form and explain your situation, and attach all correspondence and financial documentation you have to support your dispute. The CFPB says they get most companies to respond by about 15 days, although they have 30 days.

Consider working with an experienced attorney. You have the right, by law, to sue a credit bureau or financial institution over credit report errors, Sakaria says. Find an attorney through the National Association of Consumer Advocates .

Add a note to your credit report file. Although it won’t change any incorrect information still found in your report, or improve your credit score, doing so can provide some additional context for anyone who views your file, says Bruce McClary, spokesman for the National Foundation for Credit Counseling. Some lenders may read those comments and realize you’re attempting to correct the errors, which could improve how the potential lender, employer, or landlord views your financial situation.

You can request your credit reports from all three major credit bureaus using a single source: AnnualCreditReport.com . But if you find an error in any of your reports — for example, an incorrect account number or a payment mistakenly marked late — you need to deal with the bureau that issued it.

Each credit bureau assembles your report from information sent to it by lenders, credit card issuers, public agencies and sometimes landlords. Errors in reporting can cost you credit score points, so it's worth taking the time to clean up your credit reports.

What should I check on my Experian credit report?

Rod Griffin, Experian’s senior director of public education and advocacy, advises checking all identifying information to start. Errors here won’t affect your credit scores, but they could indicate that someone else’s information has gotten mixed with yours. Worse, they could mean you’ve fallen victim to identity theft . Check your:

Social Security number.

Name, including variations under which you’ve applied for credit.

Current and past addresses.

Next, check for errors that could affect your credit scores:

Accounts listed that aren't yours, especially if you have a common name or use a generational suffix.

Amounts that don’t match your billing statements.

Payments reported late when they were not.

Public records, such as bankruptcies, that aren't yours.

Negative information that’s correct but is too old to be listed on reports.

If you see mistakes, gather documentation supporting your case and file a dispute with Experian. The bureau has 30 business days to respond. Griffin said most disputes are resolved within 10 to 14 days, and many even sooner than that.

How to dispute Experian reports online

Griffin says going online is the simplest way to file a dispute, and that’s how most customers do it. Experian’s initial dispute portal looks like this:

If you haven't already registered with Experian, you'll do that first in order to access the dispute center. Once in, you can select items to dispute and indicate the reason. Griffin said there's no limit on the number of items you may challenge. You’ll have a chance to review your entries and upload copies of any supporting documents requested, such as a canceled check or a billing statement.

Expect emails when you file the dispute and when Experian has results available. You may also get emails with updates during the process, or you can log in to your Experian account to check the status.

How to dispute Experian reports by mail

You can print out Experian's dispute-by-mail instructions and form , or simply write a letter that includes:

Your full name, including your middle initial and any suffix, such as Jr., III, etc.

Your birthdate and Social Security number.

Addresses where you've lived during the past two years.

A copy of an identification card issued by the government, typically a driver’s license, state identification card or passport.

A copy of a utility bill, bank or insurance statement sent to your address and bearing your name.

In your letter, explain which item(s) you think are incorrect and why. If you're disputing an account, include the account number. Send copies, not originals, of documents because they will not be returned. The bureau will respond by mail.

Can I dispute by phone?

Because documents are often required, you might not be able to complete a dispute by phone. However, you can start the process by phone by requesting a copy of your report. The number is 866-200-6020.

What happens next?

If Experian agrees with you, it will change or delete the information in question on your credit report. It’s smart to check your credit report again to verify the changes were made. Your response from the bureau will contain a link to the corrected report, or it will mail you a corrected copy.

However, if Experian confirms that it's reporting the information given to it correctly, you might need to talk to the creditor or other source that's sending in the data. Ask that source to correct the information it’s reporting to Experian, then contact Experian to confirm.

You may also need to file a dispute with TransUnion and a separate dispute with Equifax , if the incorrect information also appears on your reports at those bureaus.
