What is an Instagram caption?

An Instagram caption is a written description or explanation about an Instagram photo to provide more context. Instagram captions can include emojis, hashtags, and tags. Here’s an example of a caption on Instagram:

Anna Kendrick posted a photo of her with a cute animal. Her Instagram caption reads “He followed me home ma! Can I keep him??” In this case, her caption helps give context as to why she took a picture with this animal. She told a one sentence story about how he followed her home, but likely took the photo because she thought he was cute (just look at her face!) and wanted to keep him.

What makes a good instagram caption?

A good Instagram caption doesn’t just accompany a photo; it enhances it, engages the audience, and sparks conversations. Below are strategies to master the art of writing captivating Instagram captions:

1. Engage your audience by asking questions

Posts with the most engagement tend to have Instagram captions that ask for something.

You might ask for friend tags such as “Tag a friend who’d love this t-shirt.” You could also use your Instagram caption to ask a question such as “What do you think of this look?” And of course, you can ask for a purchase by asking people to click the link in the bio.

By asking for something, you engage your audience and strengthen your relationship with them. All good Instagram captions get people talking, sharing, or buying.

2. Stay within the character limit for a balanced expression

The Instagram caption character limit is 2,200 characters. How many words are 2,200 characters? About 330 words, give or take.

Take advantage of this character limit every now and then. Some days you might choose to write an Instagram caption with a string of emojis, but other days you might decide to share a story. 2,200 characters are enough to clearly communicate the context of your post.

Use a character count tool to keep track of the number of characters that you’ve created for your caption. It’ll make it easy for you to stay within the mentioned character limit.

3. Add emojis as Easter eggs

If you’ve got a sizable and loyal audience, you can use emojis to leave Easter eggs in your Instagram captions. What’s an Easter egg? They’re little hints that send a message across without explicitly saying anything.

Let’s say a celebrity chef is launching a vegan menu. He posts a picture of a covered dish. The caption reads, “Big reveal soon! 🌿🍽️🤫.” The leaf emoji hints at something plant-based. The plate emoji points to a food announcement. The shushing face adds secrecy.

Together, these emojis encourage followers to guess the surprise without giving it away.

4. Brainstorm multiple captions to find the perfect fit

Have you ever thought of something really witty to say after posting on Instagram?

Bleh, sucks. The secret to coming up with the perfect Instagram caption is to write a bunch of captions first before choosing one. You can create a short list of ideas, browse hashtags for inspiration , or look up puns for your keyword.

Ultimately, you need to pre-decide what tone you want for your caption first. Do you want to share a heartfelt story or make someone laugh? Once you know the tone you want, you can come up with caption ideas to see what works best for your photo.

Summary: The best Instagram captions in 2024

You may have noticed that the recurring theme with these Instagram captions is confidence, self-love, and attitude.

Whether you use one of the Instagram captions from this article or create your own, the best captions on Instagram come from an appreciation of your self-worth.

If you’re creating funny captions, feel free to use puns to add a sense of playfulness to your post. Make your caption tell the untold story behind the photo and it’s sure to be a success!

Features of Good Instagram Captions

Want to write a caption from scratch? I totally get it. If you're anything like me, you take about four minutes choosing a filter for your Instagram photo, and about four hours deciding on a caption.

Worst of all, after much creative effort and advice from friends, I'm usually barely able to write a caption that goes beyond, "Had a fun day with friends!" And I’m a writer — go figure.

The point is, writing a good caption is hard. Whether you create one from scratch or choose a pre-written one, it should fulfill a few requirements.

1. Your caption is on-brand.

on-brand instagram caption: "here are some things I've thought about recently"

Whether your Instagram page is personal or for your business, your captions should be on-brand, or reflective of your brand identity .

This encapsulates the nature of your Instagram's branding and tone of voice. For example, if your page is based on self-love, you should use captions that are friendly in tone, and use inclusive language to make people feel good when they scroll through your Instagram profile.

2. Your caption is simple.

Instagram captions can fit up to 2,200 characters, but you don't have to use all of them for your caption to be considered a good one. You ideally want to keep your captions clear, short, and simple for easy readability. You also want to keep your audience's attention enough to read it to finish.

The exception to this is if you're making posts that champion storytelling or other lengthy formats. Ultimately, it comes down to what your audience is looking for.

3. Your caption is memorable.

While your Instagram caption doesn't have to be a profound piece of literature, you can make it memorable in a number of ways. Depending on the type of post you're sharing, you can make it hilarious, thought-provoking, inspiring, or anything you want it to be.

Want more inspiration? Check out our Instagram page to see how we incorporate fun, witty, and engaging captions into our social media content. The captions often complement the post itself and prompt engagement from users. Instagram Insights metrics such as comments, likes, and saves show you how well you’re engaging users and whether your captions are effective in prompting likes and comments.

Here’s one example from HubSpot with the caption “You can’t spell ‘CRM’ without ‘R’” :

business instagram caption example: hubspot

Don’t underestimate the power of a good caption. They can help you generate more engagement and turn your followers into customers.

How to Make Engaging IG Captions

Instagram captions can actually be used strategically, and in many cases help personal or business pages to increase engagement on the platform — and here’s how.

1. Ask your followers questions.

If you’re looking to entice your followers to interact or like your posts more, you could ask them for their opinion, recommendations, or even personal stories to make your page more interactive.

For example, if you’re running an Instagram page for fashion, ask your followers to comment under your newest post about their favorite designers, collections, or trends buzzing in the industry.

Or if you’re promoting a product or service, ask your followers to chime in on what they’d like to see, a problem they need solved, or even ask for a product review or testimonial on how your business has positively impacted them.

2. Add a CTA.

If you advertise your business, product, or free resource, add a clear and enticing call to action.

It doesn’t have to be the entire IG caption, but including it on the tail end of your post’s description can lead your followers from simply liking your post to visiting your online storefront or website.

3. Incorporate relevant hashtags.

instagram caption with hashtag: "momsofinstagram"

You can use up to a maximum of 30 hashtags on a typical Instagram post, these give you a lot of possibilities to attract viewers based on your topic, location, industry, product, or service. Though, you shouldn’t feel pressured to use that many, just choose the ones you find essential, or even come up with your own personally branded one.

Capture the Feeling with an Instagram Caption

Even though an image is worth 1,000 words, a well-written caption couldn’t hurt. These days, the caption can make just as much of a statement as the image! For all of the occasions that are worthy of a post to your feed, use one of the quotes from this list and customize it to make it your own.

what_to_post_on_instagram_1.2

This means engagement potential on Instagram is through the ROOF!

Use these 30 Instagram post ideas to get a piece of that “engagement pie.”

1. Your business’s products in use

IMG-0366-1-1

Post photos or videos of your product used in the real world.

This helps viewers imagine themselves using your product in action.

The same thing goes for a service. You can show what your company does step-by-step to deliver on what your customers pay for!

When showing your product in use, remember not to overdo it (you want to sprinkle this type of post every now and again).

2. Behind-the-scenes

More & more businesses are sharing photos taken behind the scenes .

These images work great for providing an authentic voice for your brand.

Here are some examples of behind-the-scenes content:

  • A project you're working on (video, eBook, course)
  • A company meeting
  • Your work set-up
  • Things going on before an interview

Here's an example from online business coach Louise Henry:

IMG-0365

If it's a feed post, don't forget to add the best Instagram hashtags for your industry !

Behind-the-scenes posts are all about authenticity and are a fantastic way to show a different side of your brand.

IMG-0367

Selfies are all over social media, and for a good reason!

Many of us believe in something that's bigger than ourselves.

When it comes to social causes, sharing them with your audience is a fantastic way to show your business is involved with a positive change.

IMG-0368

Social media is a fast-paced medium.

Video is treated differently depending on which social media platform you're on.

But Instagram only allows 3-60-second videos.

Let's say your video is 30 seconds.

video

In that timeframe, you need to capture attention, keep attention, and find a way to elicit engagement.

  • “Grabbing attention” is when you have a “scroll stopper” in the first 3-seconds of your video.
  • “Keeping attention” is when you have video cuts, subtitles, and interesting content your average follower will LOVE.
  • “Elicit engagement” is when an Instagram caption asks for engagement or the content has a “wow” factor that invites it.

7. Hyperlapse content

The Instagram Hyperlapse app lets you capture impressive, time-lapse videos with just the push of a button.

  • Photography

And these are just to name a few! Be sure to get creative in YOUR industry.

8. Throwback Thursday or #TBT (only on Thursdays!)

Thursdays are when Instagram users share images from the past.

They could be photos from when your company was just starting out or images from fun company parties of yesteryear.

Don’t forget to use the hashtag #TBT or its variations:

  • #Throwbackthursday
  • #Throwbackthursdays
  • #Throwbackthursdayy

This way, your post shows up on the hashtag page!

9. Funny Photos/Videos & Memes

Some of the BIGGEST influencers and companies use memes to get some laughs out.

IMG-0372

Let's face it:

When you think of "businesses," you don't always think of "comedy."

So, adding comedy is the PERFECT way to stand out!

Your Instagram account will feel fun & light-hearted when you also sprinkle in a few memes .

Consider creating a meme about your business, product, or industry.

Content Studio for memes

You can use Post Planner's Content Studio to create your own memes!

Be on the lookout for trendy meme images by browsing your Instagram discovery feed.

10. A sneak-peek

Sneak Peak

Releasing a new product or feature soon?

Tease your audience with it!

Let's face it: Movie trailers get us excited, and the anticipation makes us want to TELL our friends.

Your sneak-peek can be a short video or an image that says a little about the new product or feature.

Having a date for when it’ll be released is a great way to gain awareness and even get pre-orders.

11. Do a monthly challenge

Think of doing something different EACH day.

Maybe like a 30-day photography challenge!

For example, if you were a fitness influencer, you could do a 30-day diet challenge where you post your progress and how you're feeling on your Stories.

Here's an example of a monthly challenge, a clean eating one:

IMG-0373

12. T utorials and how-to's

If you're in business, it means you have expertise in something.

If you know something well, someone else probably doesn't know it as well as you do.

Tutorials are a great way to share value with audience members.

Not to mention, it attracts steady engagement - like people asking questions and tagging their friends.

For example, if you’re a fitness trainer, you could post videos of how to properly do certain exercises.

Remember to break it down step-by-step to keep it simple.

13. Do a trend

Social media is DRIVEN by trends.

Every month...scratch that.. .EVERY WEEK, something big is trending.

When you leverage trends, it can be the perfect VIRAL hit your Instagram page needs.

Trends can be:

So using UGC opens the door to impactful posts.

Here's a UGC example from Starbucks:

15. Instagram Reels

Instagram Reels was rolled out in the summer of 2020 to compete with TikTok.

This feature is an even SHORTER way to share videos, lasting from 15 to 90 seconds.

Reels let you:

  • Record short videos
  • Speed up or slow down your clips
  • Add music from Instagram's music library
  • Apply other trendy edits

Why use Reels?

They're an even quicker way for your business to share information while entertaining your audience.

Not to mention, they're also versatile.

Reels are in the "Reels” section of your Instagram page but can also be posted to your Stories AND feed.

Here are other benefits of Instagram Reels:

  • Reels reach a wider audience since users are shown Reels from accounts they don't even follow.
  • They’re very easy to repurpose and share on other platforms like TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube Shorts.

16. Transformations

If your business has helped a lot of people, sharing a transformation can inspire people to work with you.

In other words, a transformation shows the RESULTS you can produce.

You might see this a lot with coaches in the fitness niche (or literally any type of coach).

Transformation

Transformations are a form of a case study.

In your caption, write about where your customer was in the beginning and the results they accomplished in the end. Also, mention what YOU did to get them there!

17. Fascinating statistics

Statistics posts are a fantastic way to engage your audience by providing them with valuable data.

People LOVE numbers and data, especially when it comes to understanding trends, behavior, and industry insights.

Statistics post-1

Plus, sharing statistics can help establish yourself as an authority and expert in your field.

Here's how to create the perfect statistics post:

  • Source data from industry reports, surveys, studies, or by collecting your own data
  • Choose a statistic that's relevant and interesting
  • Turn the statistic into a visually appealing graphic that makes the data easy to consume
  • Give your graphic a header that hooks users
  • Write a caption that gives context into why the data matters

Important note: Remember to cite your source to show your content is credible.

18. Drawings or graphics

Not everyone is an artist, but if you are... you should definitely show it on your Instagram!

Posting artwork is a way to connect with your audience on a personal level, while showcasing your creativity.

This will attract followers who appreciate your unique style.

19. Run a contest

One simple way to build hype around your brand is by running a contest and posting about it.

Contests encourage engagement AND attract new followers.

So, get your creative juices flowing and come up with a contest idea that aligns with your brand and appeals to your target audience.

Contest-1

When brainstorming contest ideas, think about:

  • What would resonate with your followers?
  • What would incentivize them to participate?
  • What would cause your contest to go VIRAL?
  • What metric do you want to improve with your contest (more followers, signups, sales, etc.)?

For example, you could do a giveaway where participants have to follow your account, like the contest post, and tag a friend for a chance to win a prize.

To promote your contest, create visually appealing graphics or videos that clearly communicate the rules and entry requirements.

Don't forget to set clear guidelines and rules for your contest to ensure fairness and transparency.

20. Post your employees

Creating posts about your employees can be a powerful way to humanize your brand.

And remember: People buy from people. Not companies.

employees

Consider highlighting your employees' unique skills, talents, achievements, and contributions to the company.

Share photos of them in action.

This could be of your employees working on a project, interacting with customers, or participating in team-building activities.

In addition to showcasing your employees' professional side, don't be afraid to show their personalities and interests outside of work.

For example, you could share photos of them enjoying hobbies, celebrating milestones, or participating in community events.

This adds a personal touch to your brand and helps create a connection with your audience beyond just the products you offer.

21. Cross-promote from your other social media accounts

Did you know you can get more reach out of the content you post on OTHER social platforms?

In fact, Instagram is PERFECT for promoting your content from other platforms like Twitter and YouTube.

cross promote

One effective way to cross-promote is by sharing snippets or teasers of your content from other platforms on your feed or Stories.

For example, if you have a YouTube channel where you create educational videos, you can post a short clip or a captivating thumbnail on Instagram, along with a call-to-action to watch the full video on YouTube.

This gives your Instagram followers a taste of what they can expect from your content and encourages them to explore your other channels.

22. Seasonal posts

Seasonal posts are a great way to keep your Instagram content fresh, relatable, and engaging.

These types of posts are about the equivalent of asking a stranger, "How about that weather today, huh?"

Literally anyone can have a conversation about the weather, right? 😂

By creating posts that align with specific seasons or holidays, you can tap into the excitement and anticipation that comes with specific times of the year.

seasonal post

Pro Tip: Plan your seasonal posts AHEAD of time. (It's easy to forget about posts that align with the seasons when you're focused on your usual content.)

23. Cover an event

How often do you attend industry events?

Attending events is a great opportunity to create engaging and exciting content for your Instagram feed — especially if they're relevant to your audience .

Events could be a lot of things...

  • Conferences
  • Trade shows
  • Local community events

Consider capturing the atmosphere and setting of the event.

Take photos or videos of the venue, the stage, or any eye-catching decorations or displays.

events

This will give your audience a sense of what it was like to be there.

In other words, you could be your audience's eyes and ears for those who couldn't attend.

Remember to respect any rules or guidelines set by the event organizers regarding photography or sharing content.

Some events may have restrictions on what can be shared, so make sure to check before posting.

24. Collab with other brands & influencers

Here's a quick way to grow your following of people in your target audience:

  • Find other brands and influencers in your industry that have a similar audience
  • Reach out to them to start a relationship
  • Pitch the idea of collaborating on content together

It's a win-win situation.

You both get content to post, and you cross-pollinate each other's followings.

Check out this example of a local photographer and local artist doing a collab post:

collab

25. Carousels

Capturing your audience's attention while they're scrolling is more important than ever.

Feeds are saturated with content, meaning you'll have to take it a step further to stand out.

One way to do this is by posting carousels!

Carousels are a post format that allows you to share multiple photos or videos in a single post.

This adds variety to your content and encourages your followers to engage with your post by swiping through the carousel to see more.

carousel-1

Consider making a carousel to:

  • Tell a story
  • Showcase a product or service
  • Share a step-by-step tutorial

Or pair this post format with any of the other ideas in this article!

26. Go Live

Go live on Instagram to connect with your audience in real-time and create an interactive experience.

Going live allows you to engage with your followers in a more personal and spontaneous way, fostering a sense of authenticity and community.

Here are some tips to make your first Instagram Live a success:

  • Plan your content and have a clear purpose for your live session. (This could be hosting a Q&A session, giving a behind-the-scenes look at your work, hosting a live tutorial, or even conducting interviews with industry experts.)
  • Promote your Live sessions with Instagram Stories, Reels, and regular posts to generate anticipation.
  • Let your followers know the date, time, and topic of your live session.
  • During your live session, engage with your viewers by responding to their comments, questions, and reactions. Encourage them to participate by asking for their input, conducting polls, or hosting giveaways.
  • Make your live session visually appealing with good lighting and a clear background.
  • Consider using props or visual aids to keep your audience engaged.
  • Use features like filters or stickers to add a touch of creativity and fun to your live session.

After your live session, save the video and share it on your Instagram feed or IGTV to reach a wider audience.

This allows those who missed the live session to catch up and provides long-term value for your content.

27. Recap your year

What have you accomplished in the past the past year?

Or maybe, what were your biggest failures and lessons learned?

As the year comes to a close, it's the perfect time to reflect on and share a recap of your year with your followers.

recap

A year-end recap post allows you to highlight your achievements, milestones, and memorable moments.

28. Share a mistake

The image most people show of themselves on social media is often their best picture, with perfect lighting, at the perfect time of them doing something really interesting.

This is flat-out not realistic.

Even the most aesthetic Instagrammers are doing very unaesthetic things throughout the day.

Which includes making mistakes in their life.

And that's okay.

So, if you want to come off as more real and HUMAN, consider making a post about one of your big mistakes.

Although you might not be proud of it, plenty of your followers would still appreciate learning from it!

29. Ask a question

Want to know one of the most simple YET effective ways to engage your followers?

Ask them a question!

By posing a question, you encourage engagement (which increases your reach) and gain valuable insights and feedback from your followers.

Which could be used to create even more posts in the future!

30. Share a testimonial or customer story

customer story

Your customers are the lifeblood of your business.

And if you want more Instagram followers to turn into customers, you need to give them social proof.

So, what's the best social proof you can show off on Instagram?

Customer stories!

If your followers are already interested in buying from you, a customer story will help them visualize what it's like to be your customer.

Here's how to make the perfect customer story post:

  • Hand-pick a customer that you know is very happy with your business.
  • Ask them for permission to be featured on your Instagram.
  • Interview them to learn about what their life was like before they became a customer.
  • Tell a success story about how your product solved their problems and helped them reach their dream outcome.
  • Don't forget to include a photo or video of your happy customer for proof!

The Ultimate Guide to Writing Good Instagram Captions

The Ultimate Guide to Writing Good Instagram Captions

Discover simple ways to write good Instagram captions that are creative and effective for your business.

Writing good Instagram captions can be really hard.

Should your Instagram captions be funny? Serious? Inspirational? Should you use emojis and hashtags? And what about your call-to-action?

To help you get started and create Instagram captions that are as great as your photos, we’ve put together this guide with all our top tips:

The Ultimate Guide to Writing Good Instagram Captions

Why Are Good Instagram Captions So Important?

A great Instagram caption will stop a scroller in their tracks — and the longer someone spends reading your caption and engaging with your post, the better your post will rank with the Instagram algorithm !

Captions are a powerful tool that can be used to encourage likes, comments, and even visits to your website. And if your post gets enough engagement, it might even end up on the Explore Page !

What’s more, captions are a huge opportunity to build a stronger relationship with your audience.

And while celebrities like Kylie Jenner can get away with a single moon emoji as a caption, for brands and influencers, lengthy captions that champion story-telling and authenticity are driving great results:

The “micro-blogging” caption trend is a great way to connect on a deeper level with your followers, which in turn can boost brand loyalty.

Not forgetting that a good Instagram caption with an effective call-to-action (CTA) is one of the best ways to inspire your followers to comment on your posts. And that means even more engagement on your account.

In a nutshell, you can’t afford to leave your captions as an afterthought.

While creating beautiful content for your feed is ultra important, if you want to get more engagement on your posts, and maybe even reach new audiences, writing good Instagram captions that drive engagement is a great strategy.

The good news is you can take Later’s How to Write Engaging Instagram Captions workshop with Instagram pro Elise Darma right now — it’s completely FREE, just sign up below!

How to Write Good Instagram Captions

So what does a good Instagram caption look like?

In its simplest form, a good Instagram caption is one that provides context, adds personality, and inspires your followers to take action.

But writer’s block is real, and when you’ve spent time and effort perfecting your Instagram images, crafting a caption can seem like added work you don’t have time for.

To help you start writing good Instagram captions that convert readers into loyal, engaged followers, we’re sharing our top tips!

Writing Good Instagram Captions

How to Write Good Instagram Captions Tip #1: Write a Killer First Line

Making the first part of your Instagram caption super-engaging and enticing is a sure-fire way to boost the amount of time people spend viewing your post.

The trick is to ensure that you deliver the punchy, attention-grabbing element of your first line before the caption is truncated (shortened) — so it’s visible in someone’s feed without them having to click “more”.

You could spark your followers’ curiosity with an intriguing statement, or capture their attention with hard-hitting stats, trigger an emotional response or share an exclusive offer.

Whatever tactic you choose, just remember that the goal is to pique your followers’ interest, so they’re more likely to read your full caption and engage with your post.

How to Write Good Instagram Captions Tip #2: Add a Call-to-Action

The simple act of including a call-to-action in your Instagram caption and inviting your audience to comment or like a post can go a very long way it when it comes to driving more engagement.

And the best bit — the engagement doesn’t stop with Instagram!

A good CTA can inspire your followers to engage with your business website, sign up to a newsletter or shop online!

Here’s how to nail your CTAs in your Instagram posts:

Using Call-to-Actions to Drive Engagement

If you want more engagement on your posts, all you have to do is ask!

Add a call-to-action to your Instagram captions like “double tap if you agree”, or ask a personal question to encourage more comments on your post.

Not only will this strengthen the sense of community on your Instagram account, but it will also provide positive indicators for the Instagram algorithm — which will lead to more exposure for your post.

Try to keep your CTAs fun and easy to do to encourage as many engagements as possible.

Another great call-to-action that will boost your post with the Instagram algorithm is to ask your followers to tag their friends in the comment section of your post.

This can be as simple as saying: “Tag a friend who needs to hear this!”, or “Tag someone that would wear this!”.

Alternatively, you could run an Instagram contest that requires users to tag a friend in the comments section in order to enter.

If you’re planning on running an Instagram contest, it’s a good idea to include “contest” or “giveaway” at the beginning of your caption to really capture your followers’ attention!

Using Call-to-Actions to Divert Traffic to Your Site

You can also use call-to-actions to encourage your audience to visit your website or purchase a product.

If you have over 10k followers on Instagram, you can add direct links to your Instagram Stories and invite viewers to “swipe up” to learn more.

But it can be a little bit trickier to direct your followers to your site from your post captions.

One way around this is to encourage your followers to click the link in your bio , or even visit a specific URL.

Instagram only gives you one hyperlink in your bio, so if you’re looking to optimize on that, think about using a tool like Linkin.bio by Later.

With Linkin.bio , you can redirect your viewers from your captions to a clickable landing page that looks exactly like your feed.

So your audience will always be able to find the link they’re looking for, and you won’t have to keep updating the link in your profile!

Want to drive more traffic to your website and convert followers into customers? Linkin.bio is available on all Later business plans.

Tease the Value of Completing a Call-to-Action

To make your call-to-actions even more effective, let your followers know what they stand to gain by doing it.

As Elise Darma mentions in our free How to Write Engaging Instagram Captions workshop, this can be as simple as adding “so that” to your captions — such as: “enter my competition so that you can win…” — or by setting out what your audience will learn by following your CTA!

Adding a simple reason for why your followers should follow your call-to-action will encourage them to do so, which will help you achieve your goals!

Make Your Call-to-Actions Stand Out

As captions get longer, it’s easier for your call-to-action to get lost amongst all of your caption copy.

To combat this, you can use a custom font to jazz up your captions and draw more attention to your call-to-action.

And creating a custom font is easy!

All you have to do is paste your call-to-action into a custom font tool, like IGfonts.io , to generate a whole range of fonts that you can simply copy and paste into your caption.

You can also use eye-catching emojis, capital letters, or symbols to make your call-to-actions extra visible!

How to Write Good Instagram Captions Tip #3: Add Line Breaks to Longer Captions

Keeping your Instagram captions short and punchy is a great way to ensure your message gets across — but what about when you’ve got lots to say?

Adding line breaks to your Instagram captions will keep them easy to digest, even when you’ve got several points to make!

This simple spacing hack is great for breaking up hefty captions, that could be a serious turn-off for your followers.

And it’s a cinch to do with Later !

Previously, you had to add individual symbols, like stars or dashes, each on a new line of text, to create line breaks in your captions.

But with Later, all you have to do is press the return key while writing your caption and you’ll have lovely, spaced out captions for your Instagram posts!

Don’t believe us? Sign up for Later if you haven’t already and give it a try — it’s free!

How to Write Good Instagram Captions Tip #4: Use a Consistent Brand Voice

Aside from the obvious tips on using proper grammar and spelling, one of the most important parts of any good Instagram caption is a consistent, and on-brand, voice.

Your Instagram captions should mirror your brand personality, and they should sound and feel like the rest of your marketing channels.

In general, it’s a good idea to take a more informal tone in your captions, as this will make your posts more personable — which is great for encouraging engagement!

A quick tip is to read your captions out loud and or dictate your caption to your phone using your voice notes. If it doesn’t sound like how you’d naturally speak, then it might be worth going back to the drawing board.

If you’re still honing your brand voice, check out these 10 brands we’re crushing on for some fresh Instagram inspo!

How to Write Good Instagram Captions Tip #5: Pick 2-3 Focal Themes

A consistent Instagram feed aesthetic is one of the best ways to grow a large and loyal following while showing off your brand’s unique style and tone — and the same applies for your Instagram captions!

Consistent Instagram captions will give your account a stronger personality and focus, reinforcing that you’re an expert in your domain — whatever that may be!

An easy way to do this is to set 2-3 themes that you can write about time and time again.

Take for example @everlane , who keep their captions centered around their products, transparency, and sustainability.

You can even assign a regular time slot to share posts related to a specific theme. For example, beauty brand @TrinnyLondon shares a “Fashion Friday” post each week — highlighting what the team is wearing.

CONTENT PLANNING TIP: Use Later’s Calendar Notes feature to reserve slots in your content planner for a specific theme — even if you don’t have a full post ready to schedule yet!

How to Write Good Instagram Captions Tip #6: Include Eye-Catching Emojis

When you aren’t using emojis to draw attention to your call-to-action, you can use them to add personality to your Instagram caption.

You can insert multiple emojis at the beginning of your caption to catch the eye of your followers with a bit of color, so they want to click to read more, or you can replace whole words with an emoji.

Even if you just add an emoji at the end of your Instagram caption, it will make your caption more inviting to your followers — and why not? Everyone loves an emoji!

How to Write Good Instagram Captions Tip #7: Disclose Sponsored Posts

With FTC regulations being tightened around sponsored posts and Instagram ads, it’s more important than ever to be transparent about your posts.

When you’re being rewarded or paid to promote a business or product — whether it’s through physical payment, affiliate links, or on a gifting basis — it needs to be correctly disclosed.

A common practice among influencers is to include a hashtag like #spon, #sponsored, #ad, #paid, or #partnership in the captions of their sponsored Instagram posts.

But that’s not enough anymore, according to the FTC .

If you want to disclose sponsored Instagram posts using a general hashtag, the only FTC-compliant ones are #sponsored or #ad.

And according to the FTC, you can’t simply hide #ad in the middle of your 29 other hashtags (especially because Instagram captions are shortened after 1-2 lines of text). The disclosure hashtag has to be easily noticed and understood by users.

That doesn’t mean you have to put #ad or #sponsored at the very beginning of your caption, but it’s obviously less likely to be seen if it’s in the middle or at the end.

The FTC also states that you can’t simply attach the word “ad” to the end of another hashtag, such as #adidasoriginalsad.

If you’re unsure, your backstop should be to over-disclose than under. Authenticity and transparency is valued on Instagram more than anything else, so it’s worth being honest with your followers.

How to Write Good Instagram Captions Tip #8: Write Your Captions in Batches

One of the biggest reasons people have trouble writing Instagram captions is because they try to do it on the fly, which definitely isn’t ideal.

How to Write Good Instagram Captions Tip #9: Use Hashtags to Boost Your Discoverability

Not only can hashtags help you gain more Instagram followers, but they’re a great way to connect with customers, find content created about you by your followers, and build long-term relationships with influential partners!

How Instagram Hashtags Work in Captions

Hashtags help organize and categorize photos and video content, which means that Instagram knows when to show your post to viewers who have searched the hashtag, or are browsing the Explore page.

For example, a food blogger could post a picture of a smoothie bowl, and then use the hashtags #superfoods , #cleaneating , and #vegansofig when it’s uploaded to Instagram.

How to Be Strategic With Hashtags

In order to be successful with hashtags, it’s important to be strategic about your hashtag usage.

The “most popular” Instagram hashtags are just simple words, and while tagging #love , #happy , and #dog may get you a few more likes, it’s not going to do much for your growth in the long run.

Instead of using the most popular Instagram hashtags, it’s better to use the top Instagram hashtags that have an engaging community behind them and are specific to your audience.

The narrower the scope of the hashtag, the more engaged the users are. You’ll be surprised by just how niche hashtags can get!

One of the best ways to stay organized with all of your community Instagram hashtags is by using Later’s Saved Captions feature .

Be Strategic With Hashtags

With Saved Captions, you can create templates to save your most commonly used hashtags.

When it’s time to schedule, simply select one of your Saved Captions to add it to your post.

And best of all? It’s free to all Later users! Learn more about Later’s Saved Captions feature in this video:

Use Branded Hashtags in Your Instagram Caption

A branded hashtag is a great way to start a conversation with your followers and increase the reach of your content.

Branded hashtags are a way for your “fans” to share with their followers how they are already engaging with your brand, and for you to inspire user-generated content (UGC). It can mean major growth for your followers and help with the overall engagement on Instagram .

Keep Your Instagram Captions Clean

Adding hashtags to your Instagram caption is a great way to make your posts more discoverable, but too many hashtags can make your captions look untidy.

Equally, adding hashtags too soon in your caption can encourage users to click away from your post — which is the opposite of what you want to achieve!

Instead, add the bulk of your hashtags to the very end of your caption, tucked away behind several line breaks!

This will keep your Instagram posts discoverable and maintain your sleek aesthetic.

How to Write Good Instagram Captions Tip #10: Create Captions for Your Instagram Stories

Adding a caption to your Instagram Stories is one of the most effective ways to capture your viewers’ attention — especially as lots of people watch stories without sound .

Your Instagram Stories captions can be informative (so it doesn’t matter if viewers’ watch without sound) or intriguing — to encourage your audience to tune in and listen!

Create Captions for Your Instagram Stories

You can also use Instagram Stories captions to drive your followers to complete a specific action. This could be as simple as encouraging them to swipe up, or click the link in your bio.

Create Captions for Your Instagram Stories

Not only do captions encourage more activity, but they’ll also make your stories more user-friendly for people with a hearing impairment.

And there’s a ton of new apps out there to help!

For live video, you can use the Clipomatic app to automatically add subtitles as you record. All you have to do is hit the record button, speak clearly, and your words will appear in a stylish caption right on your recording.

Create Captions for Your Instagram Stories

For prerecorded video, you can use the Caption This app to automate your subtitles — just upload your recorded video and wait for your captions to populate!

How to Write Good Instagram Captions Tip #11: Optimize Your IGTV Captions

ICYMI: When an IGTV preview is shared to your Instagram feed, the caption is automatically pulled from your IGTV video title and description.

With this in mind, it’s worth thinking about how your IGTV video title and description works as a feed post caption — as previews are one of the best ways to drive more views to your video content!

Equally, if your IGTV video is part of a sponsored partnership, it’s important to disclose this clearly in your feed preview caption:

Your IGTV video descriptions are also the only place where you include clickable links on Instagram (aside from your link in bio) so it’s definitely worth encouraging your audience to watch your full IGTV video in your feed preview captions!

Coming up with good Instagram captions might seem hard, but if you want to be successful on Instagram, it’s important to not let your Instagram captions become an afterthought.

Whether you’re an ecommerce brand selling products or a blogger sharing content, writing good Instagram captions can be a game-changer for your Instagram engagement !

How to Write the Perfect Instagram Caption, According to an Expert

Meghan Blalock

In the fashion community, few social media platforms are as beloved as Instagram. Whether we're sharing snaps of our latest #ootd or browsing through other fashion people's fabulous posts from runway shows, parties, and beyond, Instagram is where it's at. There's only one problem.

Posting a photo to Instagram, of course, isn't really a hard thing to do—the challenge comes in crafting the perfect caption to accompany the image. Some of our favorite It girls are really good at it— we're looking at you, Alexa Chung —and while we take inspiration from their daily musings, we thought it might be wise to pick the brain of a bona fide social media expert. And that's just what we did.

We sat down to chat with Michael Kwolek, the director of research at social media consultancy firm Room 214 . We asked him to share his learnings on the types of Instagram captions that work—the ones that increase engagement, are prone to getting you more likes, and generally make people like you more on the platform—and, of course, the types of captions that  don't work.

What he had to say really surprised us. Keep scrolling for an expert's tips on how to write the perfect cute Instagram caption.

"Brevity is so important," Kwolek tells us. "I like when people just use a caption like 'This.' [to go along with their image]. That’s always a good go-to. Something super brief. It should be shorter than a tweet."

It's true: All those people you follow who like to #hashtag #every #word #in #their #Instagram #posts — they're doing it wrong.

" Do not hashtag every word in your caption!" Kwolek emphasizes. "That’s a definite no-no. Hashtags should be relevant; for example, #ootd is still super relevant. When you use it, you feel like you’re part of a bigger conversation, like you’re actually part of something. It’s distracting if you put a hashtag that has no relevance, if there's no reason to click on it, just something you made up on the spot—it’s a dying joke, and it just makes it harder for people to read your caption. If it’s relevant and it’s worth searching inside Instagram, that’s cool."

Gasp.  According to Kwolek, if your Instagram caption is borderline illegible, that's a bad thing. (Though you'd probably never know it from taking a quick scroll through your feed.)

"Proper spelling, capitalization, grammar: Those are still important to people," he says. "If you want someone to read what you’re saying, you have to make it legible. It’s such a basic thing, but it’s so important. There’s a lot of funny and interesting slang that’s happening out there, which is totally fine and relevant, but when you’re abbreviating every word you use and there’s no correct grammar,  people see that, and they’re like, 'I can’t even understand this, and I’m moving on.'"

"Add value to the image with the caption," Kwolek recommends. "When I scroll through Instagram, I don’t necessarily even read the captions. If you want to have a caption that people are actually going to want to read, you kind of have to build that up with the image first. You want people to say, 'I’m going to look at this image, but hey, I’m going to read this caption too.'"

And how do you do that?

" I think it’s about having a really strong point of view about something," he says. "Y ou really want to hear a person's personality through their Instagram feed. When someone gets too pretentious on Instagram, it can be a turnoff."

For all the blushing brides out there, this one's for you: Event-specific hashtags are lame, according to Kwolek.

"When people come up with hashtags for their vacation or their wedding, that kills me a little bit," he admits. "It’s definitely not my vibe—it just feels a little pretentious to me. You’re not that special that you’re going to start some trending hashtag because of your vacation to Florida. Plus, it adds visual clutter where there shouldn’t be any—we should be letting the images speak for themselves more. Just show me something beautiful."

Yes, à la Beyoncé , Instagram photos without captions reign supreme.

"That’s actually not done enough," Kwolek says. "When you hashtag something, you’re just basically saying to the Internet, 'Please, I hope other people see this.' When you don’t hashtag it, it’s like you're saying, 'I’m letting this image speak for itself, and whoever sees it sees it.' Beyoncé doesn't use Instagram captions, because she doesn't need to. We can all only aspire to be more like Beyoncé."

The Ultimate Guide to Writing Instagram Captions in 2022

What does an instagram caption do for your brand.

  • Guide to Writing Instagram Captions

Key Takeaways

Conclusion .

Instagram is primarily a visual platform packed with lifestyle shots of the rich and famous, endearing pictures of pets, culinary adventures, or beautiful landscapes. Well, not always. You have a priceless business tool in your hands with an Instagram account. With real thought and strategy, you could persuade your reader to like, share, and comment on your post; it could even lead them to visit your website.

Though Instagram is a visual treat for a user, a post is not complete without a caption to go with it. For example, a woman sipping water wearing gym clothes of a particular brand could look like a candid photograph taken by anybody. Without a caption, the purpose is lost. Thus, you must come up with good Instagram caption ideas.

Good captions can convert readers into followers. They are a sure-fire way to engage your readers for a longer time. And if your post gets ample engagement, it could end up on the Explore page! According to research by Fohr , the average Instagram caption length has more than doubled since 2016. In 2022, it is predicted that people will use much longer caption lengths – much like a mini-blog.

Instagram algorithms determine which posts come on a user’s feed. This is based on relevance, and the engagement on that particular post determines relevancy. Here are some tips on how to write Instagram captions.

  • Adds value to the image
  • Makes conversation with your reader
  • Influences the reader to respond to your post
  • Builds a relationship with your reader
  • Displays the brand’s tone of voice
  • Captures a particular audience

Well-written captions paired with compelling images and videos give you a larger engaged audience. Here is a guide to writing Instagram captions that will help you take your Insta business account to another level.

Attractive first liners

An appealing element in the first line of your Instagram caption will ensure that the reader does not move away from your post. If you make sure that the line visible at first look is punchy and captivating, you can stop your scrollers in their tracks. They do not have to click “more” to learn more about your post. You must place the most relevant information at the beginning of your caption. If you can draw in your audience there, then you’ve nailed it.

Length of the caption

According to a Semrush blog, the human attention span is thought to have shrunk from 12 to 8 seconds, which means you need to focus on high-quality short captions. The Instagram team recommends keeping your captions under 125 characters. This will ensure that your entire caption becomes visible in your Instagram feed.

It has been observed that brand with less than 1 million followers has the most interaction on posts with caption within 50 characters.

Having said that, long-form content is now gaining more popularity – much like a mini-blog.

Strategy for creating Instagram captions

  • Put the important information first. Keep it short and simple.
  • Weave a story.
  • Ask your readers some interesting questions.
  • It is the age of hashtags. Include them.
  • Give structure to the content.
  • Always have a call to action.

Establish your brand voice

Establishing your brand voice takes work. Your language, style of posting, tone, everything has to be unique to your brand. Identify with your audience. For this, you need to know your audience very closely and connect with them emotionally.

Motivate your readers to get involved with your brand. Determine your brand voice. Your brand personality must shine through every post you make. Whatever your brand’s tone, whether humorous, informative, informal, etc., it must be consistent and clear. Your reader will identify your brand from your tone and style. For example, if you have quotes placed below or above your visuals, your readers will begin to look out for your posts and even share them, thus increasing your reach.

Link your imagery with your caption

Add value to your post. Do not just write an Instagram caption, but share information that complements your visual. For example, you could mention how to use your product or where it is available. Also, some kind of engagement will make the reader come back to your page.

Call-to-action

Not everyone who sees your post is following you. Your caption space is where you engage your audience. Here is your opportunity to get them to respond to you. You can build a rapport with your reader by responding to their comment feed, and your followers will be happy that you took the time to respond to them. This will widen the reach of your brand. You can also get insight into your customers’ likes and dislikes, which will consequently shape your Instagram strategy and marketing tactics.

Some examples of call-to-action words are:

  • Tag us in your photos!
  • Like us to agree
  • Don’t forget to comment below about your favorite (product)
  • Visit us at (website) to order right away!

Promote your brand

Contest ideas are a great way to promote your brand. A competition made specifically for your followers will create curiosity around your product. It will give exposure to your brand and generate engagement. Entice your followers to participate in the competition by having attractive giveaways or prizes. The caption can mention entry instructions, prize descriptions, etc. It is good to spend quality time brainstorming ideas and researching previous campaigns. Remember to proofread and edit your content well before sharing.

Use hashtags

If you cannot find the right hashtags to include in your Instagram captions, many internet sites can help you. You can also find them in Instagram’s search field, which gives you a list of hashtags you can use. Hashtags are important to increase engagement. It is still a sure-shot way to get seen by new audiences. Hashtags are best when used at the end of your captions. Use the ones that go with your visual and caption, but make sure they are unique. You can even create a hashtag that will go well with your brand and use them in all your posts. Hashtags will also be shared by other users. Here are some hashtag tips for you:

  • Use relevant hashtags.
  • Put hashtags at the bottom of your caption.
  • Use not more than five hashtags per caption.

Emojis are the way to go!

Make your posts more personal by adding emojis to your captions. It will augment the copy making it more fun. Lately, more serious brands have also used them. Remember that where emojis are concerned, “less is more.” An emoji can emphasize the words you use. They can be used to highlight or organize a list of things. It is an excellent way to give breaks between texts.

Use mentions

Build your online community by calling out to your customers, friends, well-wishers, or brand collaborators. It draws attention to your Instagram profile. This is a way to build trust among your followers. The others who have been seeing your posts will also respond and engage with your brand.

For example, you must have heard of influencers. As soon as you use the @mentions (the influencer’s name) in your Instagram captions, a notification is sent to them. When they share the post or comment, your brand pops up in all the feeds the influencer reaches. These are shares you would not have got otherwise. Even though we cannot get influencers to engage with any post, you can tag them using content related to them. This will increase your reach to a great extent.

Match the timing

The caption is done, and hashtags are relevant; you are sure that your content will increase sales and create brand awareness. But are you posting it at the right time?

Post content when your audience is most likely to see it. Only then will they interact with your post. Every brand caters to a distinctive audience with different behavior patterns on social media. Certain practices are to be followed when posting on Instagram. Posting when your followers are online is key because the Instagram algorithm prioritizes recency. This means that, if all else is equal, a newer post will show up higher on the newsfeed than an older one.

  • According to research by Fohr , the average Instagram caption length has more than doubled since 2016. In 2022, it is predicted that people will use much longer caption lengths – much like a mini-blog.
  • Well-written captions paired with compelling images and videos give you a larger engaged audience.
  • You must place the most relevant information at the beginning of your caption. If you can draw in your audience there, then you’ve nailed it.
  • According to a Semrush blog, the human attention span is thought to have shrunk from 12 to 8 seconds, which means you need to focus on high-quality short captions.
  • Do not just write an Instagram caption, but share information that complements your visual
  • You can build a rapport with your reader by responding to their comment feed, and your followers will be happy that you took the time to respond to them.
  • Make your posts more personal by adding emojis to your captions. It will augment the copy making it more fun.
  • Post content when your audience is most likely to see it. Only then will they interact with your post.

Instagram captions are on the upward trend. It has been for a while now. Your success on Instagram depends largely on the captions you provide and subsequent engagements you get for your visual posts. Frequent self-evaluation is extremely important.

Not everybody can turn on audio at all times. This is where captions save the day. Get the right hashtags, follow your competitors’ posts, educate yourself on what is most popular, and know what is trending.

Another fundamental strategy is using user-generated content. Create conversations with your readers by asking them to post their pictures using your products, and there, you have a story to tell, proving the credibility of your product! This guide to writing Instagram captions will take you a long way in your journey with the social media platform.

15 Ways to Add Text to Your Instagram Photos

things to write under instagram pictures

Instagram captions are powerful, what with their hashtags and their high character limits and the ability to tag people. However, captions need the user to click through to the image itself to read. If you want your text to be seen by everyone, you need text to be on the images themselves. Now, I’m not going to go deep into the marketing techniques behind using text, or the limitations on text on social media images. Those are topics for another time. Instead, I’m just going to focus on the apps and programs you can use to add text to images, regardless of the platform you’re using.

I’ve broken this post up into three main categories. The first category is app tools , mobile apps you can use on a phone or tablet to add text to images. The second set of tools are desktop tools you can use for the same purpose. The third category is the more robust, professional-level image editing tools. There should be something for everyone here.

Mobile Tools

This first section, as mentioned above, is dedicated to mobile apps. There are five here, and I’ve tried to add apps for both iOS and Android. In general, these apps are focused on simple image editing for Instagram specifically. Adding text is one major feature, but they also have elements like color filters, cropping, collage-making and so on. They’re still limited in what they can do, but that’s fine. If all you’re doing is taking a snapshot with your phone camera, sprucing it up a bit on the fly is all you really need.

1. WordSwag

Word Swag

WordSwag is an app for both iOS and Android that allows you to create quote images, which are images largely focused on the quote, where the photo itself tends to take a back seat. It’s one of the more robust editors for this specific purpose, with two major features. The first is the vast array of various fonts and text styles you can use. The second is a library of inspirational quotes, jokes, and shower thoughts, so you don’t even need to come up with the text for your photos. The only downside is that the app is so widely-used you’ll start to recognize other quote images using it, and it might make you feel a little less special.

2. ImageQuote (iOS)

ImageQuote

ImageQuote is an iOS-specific app that works similar to WordSwag. You can write your own quotes on background stock images they provide, or you can use your own images. Unlike Swag above, you’re not given a library of quotes to use, so you’ll have to come up with your own sayings. On the other hand, they still have a fairly good library of fonts, and they have easy buttons to use to share the completed post to Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and other apps you choose to integrate. They also have a paid version for $3, but I’m not actually sure what it adds. Probably more fonts and more possible stock backgrounds, would be my guess.

PicLab

Another cross-platform photo app, this one has a text tool, but has a more robust selection of additional features. You can add clip art or stickers to your images, you can create collages or magazine pages, you can add overlays, and you can put filters and make minor color/alignment/adjustments to the images before and after you add your text.

The same developers have three other tools you might be interested in, all specifically for iOS. One is PicLab Studio, a pro-level tool with a lot more features. The other two are GifLab and VidLab, both focused on making animated content out of your camera videos, with one obvious difference between them.

Phonto App

Another cross-platform app. This one is solely focused on adding text to images, and doesn’t have much in the way of additional features. They have over 200 fonts on offer, and you can change font colors for whole words or individual letters at a time. You can also add text effects, like backgrounds, drop shadows, and strike-throughs. It’s very simple to use, but it’s also pretty limited in what it can do. As a free app, it has ads and in-app purchases, though they aren’t very intrusive at all.

5. Over (iOS)

Over iOS

Over is a quite robust app with a fairly large content library with thousands of templates and tens of thousands of clip art and graphics, along with a huge library of free stock photos you can use. It has a surprisingly useful array of individual tools to help with the little details of individual images, like layering elements properly. On top of all of that, it has a selection of template options to resize and adjust the same image for ideal display across half a dozen different social networks at the same time. They don’t have an Android app yet, but they’re actively developing it, so stay tuned if you’re interested.

Desktop Tools

These tools are a mixture of web apps (graphic design as a service) and software you download to use. In general, they’re a bit more robust than the image editing apps for mobile devices. The benefit of using a mouse and keyboard for your editing is greater precision, though the increased array of tools and options can be daunting for newcomers. On the other hand, they tend to be potentially more expensive. Everything has its cost, right?

Canva Homepage

Canva is one of my favorite graphics design apps. It’s a web app primarily aimed at a desktop browser. They have a wide array of templates ranging from Facebook profile pictures to blog images and book covers. The main power behind the app is their huge library of stock images and elements, which you can take individually or in pre-generated templates to edit. Many of their elements require you to pay a small fee to use, with a one-month license for each element you use, though some are free. This means some images will be free to create, while others might end up costing a few bucks a piece. It’s well worth signing up for free and taking a look at what they have on offer.

7. PicMonkey

PicMonkey

Another web app, PicMonkey is a lot more like a fully robust image editing suite provided as a web service rather than as a downloadable piece of software. With it, you can do robust photo editing, individual element touch-up, and template-based designs. Novices can use basic tools, while more experienced graphic designers can dig into all of the deeper options and advanced tools. The only downside is that it isn’t free. The basic version is $6-8 per month , while the Pro version is $10-13 per month , depending on monthly or annual billing. If you like their tools, they have a limited free app for both mobile platforms as well.

BeHappy Desktop App

BeHappy is a very simple and quite limited web app. The generator is designed as more of a free tool to entice you to use their main service, which is to create and print larger posters. As a print-on-demand service, it’s fine, though not exactly top of the line. The same can be said of the generator. They have a small selection of symbols, a dozen different fonts, and a simple selection of backgrounds, and that’s about it. You’re not even able to upload a custom background. It’s made to generate very simple text block images and nothing more. Sometimes, though, that’s all you really need.

Stencil Homepage

Billed as a Canva alternative, Stencil is a similarly marketing-focused image editor app for desktop. They have access to a huge creative commons stock library with hundreds of available templates and a library of quotes you can use. You’re also able to use any of the 2,300 fonts in the Google font library, and can even upload your own font if you have a custom font made for your brand. In addition, you can access your content library and do basic image editing on the fly using browser extensions for Chrome, Safari, and Firefox. Their free version is limited to 10 images per month with limited stock photos and icons available. The Pro version is $10 per month and gives you almost unlimited access and up to 50 images per month, and the Unlimited version is $12 monthly and gives you unlimited images.

10. DesignBold

DesignBold App

Another Canva alternative, DesignBold has a few elements that set it apart from their more well-known cousin. For one thing, their stock photo library is frankly almost unwieldy in how huge it is. They made a deal with DepositPhotos to make all their images available. Their free plan is great, though it has a few limitations. The pro plan is one of the more expensive available, at $20 per month, but given the access it gives you, that’s not all that bad.

Professional Tools

Professional-grade tools are the more robust, all-encompassing photo editing apps. You can use them to add text to images, but you can also use them for literally anything else. Artists can draw, designers can make wireframes, and so on. They are almost infinitely robust, but they require more knowledge, learning, and to some extent talent to make full use of them. I generally wouldn’t recommend these to someone who just wants to add text to an image, but if you have graphic design experience, these are definitely tools you can check out.

11. Photoshop

Photoshop CC

Adobe’s Photoshop is the top of the line professional tool widely regarded as probably the best image editing program in the world. In the past, it was firmly a professional tool, and their price point well north of $500 solidified that impression. These days, you can no longer buy the program outright, but have to subscribe to part of the Adobe Creative Cloud. Photoshop alone will run you $32 per month, or $240 per year prepaid annually. You can also add on subscriptions to their other apps, like Lightroom, along with cloud storage and stock photo access. It can be expensive, but it’s a professional-level tool, so it makes sense.

Gimp Software

GIMP is the Gnu Image Manipulation Program. GNU is an open-source Linux-like operating system, GNU standing for “GNU’s Not Unix”, in a weird computer science in-joke stretching back decades. The GNU Public License is an open-source software license used by a lot of free apps, and GIMP is one of those free apps. No, you don’t need to use GNU’s operating system to use GIMP, it has a Windows and OSX version. It’s completely free and is comparable to Photoshop, though with fewer of the hugely advanced tools like content-aware fill and the hyper-advanced brushes.

13. Paint.net

Paint.net

Sometimes you want a robust graphic design tool that doesn’t have all of the complexity and excessive feature creep of Photoshop. For those needs, something like Paint.net is ideal. Paint.net is made as a more robust alternative to the Windows default MSPaint, and it has more advanced tools, plugins, and features than Paint, while still being free. There’s a paid version available through the Windows 10 App Store, but the only feature it adds is automatic updates. It’s otherwise fully featured.

14. Photo Pos Pro

Photo Pos Pro

Photo Pos Pro has a free version and a paid license. The free version is comparable to a pared-down Photoshop, with a lot of different tools and fill layer and layer mask support. It also has a variety of extensions to add to functionality quite a bit. It even has a “novice mode” that hides some of the more complex tools to make it easier to grasp and use. It does have one drawback, however, which is a limit to the size of files it can save.

Pixlr App

This app has both a web version and a mobile version. So why is it under the professional-level tools? It’s made by Autodesk, makers of other pro tools like AutoCAD, Maya, and 3DS Max. As you might expect, it’s fully-featured with a ton of advanced capability. Being a cloud service simply helps offload the processing power you would undoubtedly need otherwise. They have an express version, a normal free version, and a pro version all available.

Instagram content idea #1: A tutorial

What could you teach your audience in a snapshot?

For example, are you a Beauty Blogger? Eyebrows are life! Ask any girl who isn’t blessed with perfectly neat yet bushy brows and you’ll know how important mastering the art of brow makeup is. Share your tips on how to use your favourite products, whatever they may be, to engage with your audience on a helpful level.

Instagram content idea #2: Inspire your followers to get outside and get moving

Did you know that exercise can have a massive effect on our brains? Just 30 mins a day can improve cognitive function, lower anxiety levels, increase memory capability AND boost your mood, yeow!

Technology is fast becoming a huge part of our lives, and for most people, it means more time spent in front of a screen. Set a great example and motivate others to make it part of a daily routine.

Instagram content idea #3: Your favorite holiday

Re-live your favorite holiday experience next time you’re not sure what to post on Instagram and share a series of snaps of your most inspiring place to visit. It’s a great way to re-use content you already have (and a great reason to revisit your holiday snaps!).

Instagram is primarily about a lifestyle so choose a location that made you happy.

Haven’t been on a trip lately? ROADTRIP!

What about planning a trip to the beach – there’s always something about the ocean that makes people happy! ( Ocean images are renown for being popular for engagement! )

Instagram content idea #4: Flatlay what’s in your bag

Also known as ‘The Bag-Spill’, a neatly (or messy if that’s your style!) arranged view of what’s in your bag gives great insight into your personality, your must-haves and your life in general.

To prompt your imagination, we’re thinking: your work bag, gym bag, handbag, clutch, artist bag, makeup bag or even what’s in your new shopping bag! Flatlays are an easy and effective ‘go to’ on Instagram.

Instagram content idea #5: Your morning routine

Self-care is an area many people know they need to prioritize more –  and when they see others making time for themselves they’ll feel empowered to follow your example.

Do you get up and have some ‘me time?’, or do you jump straight onto your phone to check your Instagram DM’s? Tell your audience how you set your intention for the day – you’ll either inspire them or if you’re work-o-holics like us, perhaps give insight into what you are planning to change.

Great for building a stronger community.

Instagram content idea #6: What you had for breakfast

Breakfast foods aren’t just delicious to eat, they’re also delicious to look at, especially if you take a photo of it like a pro! Great styling, composition, and lighting is the key to this shot, and if you can manage to get your hands in the frame too, we’ve learned they get more engagement – the power of human connection!

Taking a photo from a bird’s eye view is a pro tip, so get ready to climb up on that chair safely, of course!!

Instagram content idea #7: Your work-from-home situation

Try a photograph of your desk with a positive caption could help your followers hate Mondays a little less.

Instagram content idea #8: Your outfit

When we need to go full office/business chic, we head straight to Instagram and search for #chicoutfits. If your office outfit game is strong, do Instagram a little favor — pose, and post your OOTD!

Instagram content idea #9: Your flavor of the month

Are you obsessing over a new piece of camera equipment, your newest Pottery Barn home decor purchase or you’ve scored 3 pairs of Bonds socks for less than $3? Woo! Share what product is getting you so excited.

Instagram content idea #10:  Design a cocktail that your brand would drink

Would you like a Plannocolada? Design a cocktail (or drink!) and give it a fun name that suits your personality (or your brand’s personality!). Cocktails are a fun way to talk about the end of the week – however, they’re usually taken in dark lighting with very warm tones (slightly orange-y) that don’t perform as well as we’d hope. Always check your lighting when taking indoor shots.

(Psst, not the right fit for your Instagram feed? What about a boomerang announcing the end of week celebrations. Extra points if it’s on brand!)

Need some help with Instagram’s newer features? Here’s what you should be posting to your Instagram Stories !

Instagram content idea #11: Flowers

Instagram content idea #11 Flowers

Our go-to for when we’re not sure what to post on Instagram – blooming yes! Flowers are known to freshen up any feed, grab a posy, hold it against a backdrop and get snapping. See if you can find you’re ‘on brand’ blooms! Play with nail color, arm, and hand accessories and break through your roadblock with a bit of creativity.

Instagram content idea #12: Latest apps you’ve found

Spread the word about apps, new software or new tools that you’ve found helpful, or fun! Found something that’s useful and think more people could benefit from knowing about it? Don’t keep it a secret, share it with your audience! The creators of the product may even get in touch to offer you something to say thanks – hint hint

(If you’d like to share how helpful Plann, our visual social media planning app is, we’re happy for you to use any of the images on our website or IG feed! Tag us with @plannthat so we can take part in your conversation!)

Instagram content idea #13: Something that inspires you

Showcase someone who you admire, post an image of their work and describe why they light you up from the inside!

Talk about how they motivate you, and why you’re so inspired and look up to them. Although you might not have met in person, this is a great way to acknowledge someone’s direct influence in your life.

Great for building strong relationships or getting in front of new people.

Instagram content idea #14: Your DIY projects

Trawling Pinterest and been inspired to make something yourself? (You might need to give yourself a Pinterest curfew for this one otherwise you could keep scrolling all day!)

Whether it’s a DIY floating bookshelf or a mason jar vase, see how you can tie it into your Instagram theme.

Instagram content idea #15: Inspiring quote

Inspirational quotes are a great way to show what you’re working towards, but how about creating your own?

Is there a quote you always say? Or something you imagine your company’s voice would say? Pull out the pens and paper, or jump onto Canva (you can do this without even leaving the Plann app thanks to our integration!) and create your own graphic to share.

Instagram content idea #16: Your Sunday morning

How do you start your Sunday? Do you sleep in until 11 AM? Do you get up early for a jog at 6? Or do you wake up at 7 but stay in bed reading or catching up with your favorite Netflix series while drinking coffee? Give your followers a glimpse of how your Sunday mornings are every now and then.

#sundaystyleloves is a good hashtag to use for this!

Instagram content idea #17: Sneak peek

Have you got a project bubbling away in the background, but not ready to do a ‘full reveal’ just yet? Post a little snippet of what’s going on and create some mystery, one of our favorite things when we’re thinking about what to post on Instagram!

This could be handwriting your to-do list or using a couple of your materials, or even a map with a few areas circled if you’re planning a new adventure!

Instagram content idea #18: Ask a question

Engage with your audience by asking them a quirky question. It could be anything at all and designed as a fun way to strike up a conversation (and lift your engagement rate).

Instagram content idea #19: Hold an impromptu giveaway!

There’s nothing better than scrolling through Instagram to find a bit of afternoon delight, in the form of a snap giveaway.

If you’re feeling a little flat, nothing will lift your mood faster than by making someone else’s day and giving something away.

Instagram content idea #20: Deconstruct your equipment and design a flatlay!

Collect the equipment or items you love to use daily and lay them all out to create your own flatlay. Describe why these things are all so important to you – an interesting way to show what your life is like behind-the-scenes!

Free Storytelling Guide: 30 Questions To Help You Tell Your Brand Story

Instagram content idea #22: Create white space

Is your Instagram feed looking a little busy lately? Lots of busy photographs making your feed feel a little crowded?

Sometimes busy feed = busy brain, and no space to think of what to post on Instagram!

Step back and take a look at your Instagram gallery, does it need a little white space?

Take a photo of something plain (but still in your color scheme), whether it’s a textured wall, a scene from inside your favorite cafe or the water at the beach or in a pool.

There’s even a hashtag for these types of shots called #photosinbetween

Instagram content idea #23: Sunrise or sunset

There’s always something special about the dawn of a new morning. Team it up with your own thoughts on goal-setting or reflect on your own milestones

Instagram content idea #24: Find an ‘Instagrammable wall’

You’ve seen them all over Instagram, some of your favorite people are standing (or jumping!) in front of colorful walls. Why can’t this be you too? Grab a friend for a coffee and head out to explore – once you get busy snapping you’ll find you’ll leave with many more shots to spread out over the months when you get stuck again!

Pro Tip: We recommend taking a few different shirts, hats or sunnies so you’re prepared for any color combo!

Want some Inspiration? Our favorite hashtag to follow for these is #walltraveled

  • You know who your real friends are when you pull away from them and see who wonders why you are pulling away.
  • Some people talk to you in their free time and some people free their time to talk to you.

  • You’ll know the people who feed your soul because you’ll feel good after spending time with them.
  • As we grow up, we realize it’s less important to have a ton of friends and more important to have real ones.

  • The only people I owe my loyalty to are those who never made me question theirs.
  • You should never have to think twice about who your real friends are.
  • Fake friends believe in rumors; real friends believe in you.

  • A friend is someone who can see the truth and pain in you, even when you’re fooling everyone else.
  • Friends don’t leave their friends for other people.
  • No matter how big the crowd, I’ll always be able to find you.
  • Real friends don’t tell you pretty lies. They tell you the ugly truth.
  • Side by side or miles apart, real friends are always close to the heart.

10 Instagram Bio Ideas [FREE BIO GENERATOR + TEMPLATES]

Your Instagram bio gives you 150 characters to explain who you are, what you offer, and why people should follow you.

cover image

As far as history goes, we’re living in charmed times — but Shakespeare never had to write an Instagram bio (and let’s face it, the man wasn’t known for being concise). Typing those fateful words into your profile is stressful, and for good reason: your Instagram bio is often the first place other users will look when they’re deciding whether or not to follow you.

Here’s everything you need to know about Instagram bios, and how to write one worthy of a three-act play. Wherefore art thou bio?

Table of Contents

Bonus: Unlock 28 inspiring social media bio templates to create your own in seconds and stand out from the crowd.

What is an Instagram bio?

A bio on Instagram is a description of your account that can be up to 150 characters long and sits at the very top of your profile page, next to your profile picture. It’s a snapshot of your Instagram account and a quick way to show users who you are and what you’re about.

Because of the limited character count, an Instagram bio needs to be concise, easy to read and informative… but don’t be afraid to have fun with it. Emojis and jokes are fair game, even for professionals using the platform. After reading your bio, people should understand what you do and why they should follow you.

Create. Schedule. Publish. Engage. Measure. Win.

What makes a good bio for Instagram?

A good Instagram bio is a bio that users can’t resist interacting with, whether it’s by slamming that “follow” button, scrolling through (and liking and commenting on) your content, watching your story highlights or sending your Instagram profile to friends. The best Instagram bios are short and sweet, and genuinely convey your personality as a creator or brand.

For more details, watch our video on making the PERFECT Instagram bio:

When you’re dreaming up your bio, try asking yourself these questions — especially if you’re using Instagram for business :

  • What is your brand promise?
  • How about your brand personality: Funny? Serious? Informative? Playful?
  • What are your special skills?
  • Are you a local business? National? Global?
  • What makes your product or service unique?
  • What is the first thing you want people to do after they visit your profile?

On that last point: All good marketing materials should include a clear and compelling call to action . Good Insta bios are no exception. Give visitors clear direction if you want them to click the link in your bio, follow your account or take a different specific action.

You might want to add a link to your bio to send people to a page where they can buy your products, or you might have a different conversion goal in mind. Maybe you want people to Like your Facebook page , follow you on TikTok or sign up for your newsletter.

If your goal is to build an Instagram following , your call to action might be simply to ask visitors to press that follow button, or to share their photos with a branded hashtag .

This Instagram bio generator is a web-based tool that takes a bit of information and transforms it into the perfect one-liner for your Instagram profile. It uses ChatGPT. But, like all good robots, it still needs a little human intervention to really knock it out of the park. So make sure to fill out all the inputs with as much detail as possible to get the best results. Like the list of ideas below, it’s a great tool to get inspiration for your final draft.

10 Instagram bio ideas

Want to write your Instagram bio from scratch but feeling a little stuck? Have no fear — there are literally 1.22 billion Instagram users you can get inspiration from. Here are a few bio ideas for Instagram to get you started.

1. Funny Instagram bios

Unfortunately, there’s nothing less funny than trying to be funny. The key to a comedic Instagram bio is keeping honest, like this one from a drink brand.

Innocent Instagram bio

Playing to your audience — and embracing how they see your brand — is another way to get laughs.

Bugles Instagram Bio

And when all else fails, being quippy and somewhat vague is also a good source of comedy. If chaos is your brand, embrace it.

2. Instagram bio quotes

Using Instagram bio quotes can be a great way to express an idea or create a feeling of connection.

You could use a saying, a line from a poem or song, or any phrase that will mean something to potential followers. Just make sure to give credit where credit is due if you use someone else’s words.

The Quotations Page is a good place to start your search for good Instagram bio quotes.

Here are 15 quote ideas you can copy and paste directly into your Instagram bio.

  • Happiness depends upon ourselves – Aristotle
  • We’re all born naked and the rest is drag – RuPaul
  • Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time – Barack Obama
  • I’d rather regret the things I’ve done than regret the things I haven’t done – Lucille Ball
  • Imagination is more important than knowledge – Albert Einstein
  • You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take – Wayne Gretzky
  • Cherish forever what makes you unique, cuz you’re really a yawn if it goes – Bette Midler
  • If you don’t like the road you’re walking, start paving another one – Dolly Parton
  • Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game – Babe Ruth
  • I am a rich man – Cher
  • You can be the lead in your own life – Kerry Washington
  • When the whole world is silent, even one voice becomes powerful – Malala Yousafzai

3. Creative Instagram bios

A bio may only be 150 characters, but that’s more than enough to stretch that creative muscle. During the launch of Netflix’s Heartstopper , the company changed their bio to an invite for the main actors to start a band.

This bio from Crocs is so creative, it takes a second to understand — we’ll let you read it before spoiling.

Crocs Instagram Bio

Source: @crocs

Did you get it? It’s “If you ain’t Croc-ing, you ain’t rocking.”

If you can’t make up your mind, do it all. Insta-famous Italian greyhound Tika has emojis, a quote from Lizzo, “Fashion Model” and “Gay Icon” status, and a link to her book in her bio. Impressive (but not as impressive as a dog writing a book).

Tika the iggy instagram bio

4. Cool Instagram bios

“All your friends are so cool, you go out every night” — Olivia Rodrigo. Who is pretty cool herself: this short, informative and rhyming bio says it all.

Olivia Rodrigo Instagram Bio

Source: @oliviarodrigo

Another way to up the cool factor: commit an ultimate branding faux pas and don’t introduce yourself in an easily identifiable way. For example, most folks would identify Serena Williams as a tennis superstar. In her Instagram bio, she’s simply “Olympia’s mom.” It feels very true to her, and that’s cool.

Serena Williams Instagram Bio

Source: @serenawilliams

There’s a pattern here — ”cool” and “short” go hand-in-hand. If you want a cool bio for Instagram, being too wordy won’t help. If that’s what you’re going for, try and be as concise as possible. Like Lizzo.

5. Short Instagram bios

Speaking of short — if you don’t need 150 characters, don’t use them. Dating app Bumble’s bio simply prompts folks to make the first move.

Bumble Instagram bio

Fewer words makes the words you do use more powerful, and really makes a statement.

Bob the Drag Queen Instagram Bio

Or, you can go in a totally opposite direction and write a short bio that few, if any, will understand. You do you.

Kirsten Titus Instagram Bio

6. Clever Instagram bios

A clever Instagram bio will score a chuckle (and hopefully a follow) from users. Stay self aware and lighthearted, and the cleverness will come. Old Spice’s bio is a play on the bizarre masculinity that’s present in men’s deodorant branding.

Tiffany Haddish hypes herself, but stays humble in her Instagram bio.

And sometimes, the cleverest route is the simplest: in a world of people trying to be as cool as possible, artist Allie Brosh just tells it like it is, and really stands out.

7. Instagram bios with emojis

Emojis are like cheating (the good kind). When words fail, emojis are there. Designers Josh and Matt describe their relationship, career, home base and pets all in a single line of emojis.

You can also use emojis like bullet points for a super-aesthetic look.

Or, go with the classic (if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it) and substitute emojis for the words they represent — hearts for love, etc.

8. Instagram business bios

If you’re using Instagram for business, a bio can be a great place to introduce yourself (more and more folks are using social media to research brands ). Kraft peanut butter has a great example of a succinct bio that describes their company.

Businesses can also use their bio to describe their brand ethos, and what makes them different from others in the industry.

If you’re doing affiliate marketing or partnering with other businesses, a bio is a good place to put discount codes or promotions related to those affiliations.

9. Instagram bios with links

Your link in bio is a rich place for users to gain more resources and information about your brand. Make sure your audience sees it by pointing to it. Yeah, we mean literally. Clothing brand Free Label uses their bio to identify what the link is (in this case, a path to their latest launch).

Source: @free.label

In a similar fashion, artist Zoe Si uses her bio to point to her latest book, which is accessible through her link in bio.

10. Informative Instagram bios

Sometimes, you just want the facts. Having the answer to your most frequently asked questions — in the example below, that’s probably “When are you open?” — can pay off. It might not be fun, but it’s simple and clear.

13 Instagram bio tricks you may not know about

Hungry for more? We got you. Here are some tips to make sure you have the best bio for Instagram.

1. Use fancy Instagram bio fonts

Technically, you can only use one “font” in your Instagram bio. But there are tools out there that will help you create the look of a custom font by mapping your text to existing special characters.

Here’s an example of what Hootsuite writer Christine’s bio looks like in a few different fonts, as created using the tool Instagram Fonts .

Instagram bio fonts

That third one is a little bonkers, but you could pick and choose a few words to incorporate strategically for visual appeal. In general, it’s a good idea to use this trick sparingly, for emphasis, rather than dressing your entire bio up in fancy fonts.

Once you find a font style you like, just copy and paste it into your Instagram bio.

2. Use Instagram bio symbols

We’ve already talked about using emojis. But you can also go old-school and use special text symbols to break ★ up ★ your ★ bio. (Remember Wingdings and Webdings? How very 1990s.)

This trick uses the same principle as the tip above, but instead of using symbols to create the look of a custom font, you can use them as retro emojis or unique bullet points:

Blogger unique bullet points

Source: @blogger

The easiest way to find your special character is to open a new Google Doc, then click Insert and choose Special characters.

Insert special characters

You can scroll through the available options, search by keyword, or even draw a shape to find a similar character. Then, just copy and paste into your Instagram bio.

3. Add a location

This is particularly useful for businesses: customers will want to know who (and where) they’re buying from. Marking your location can also help your brand be more searchable.

When you add your address to your Instagram business profile, it also appears below your bio but does not use up any of your bio character count. This is another great way to free up space for more compelling bio information. Be warned, your address only shows up on mobile.

4. Add contact buttons

Business profiles can include contact information in the form of buttons that allow people to phone you, email you, or get directions to your business directly from Instagram. This is another one that only shows up on mobile.

5. Add a call to action button

Another mobile-only feature: You can encourage people to take action straight from your Instagram bio with CTA buttons. These allow your followers to take direct actions like ordering food from your restaurant, or buying tickets for your event.

Maenam Instagram Bio

You’ll find these options under Action Buttons when editing your business profile.

6. Add a link in bio

You get one clickable link in your Instagram bio. Since you can’t use clickable links in Instagram feed posts (unless you’re using Instagram ads or Instagram Shopping ), your bio link is valuable real estate.

You can change the URL as often as you like. You might want to link to your newest or most important content (like your latest blog post or video), a special campaign, or a landing page specifically for visitors coming from Instagram .

You can also use Instagram tools like Hootbio to set up a mobile landing page with multiple links. That way, you don’t have to keep updating the link in your Instagram bio, which can lead to outdated “link in bio” statements on older posts.

To get started with Hootbio, sign in to your Hootsuite account and navigate to the Create section of the dashboard. There, select Hootbio from the menu.

Note: Hootbio is available to Team, Business, and Enterprise plan Hootsuite users. If you are a Professional plan user, upgrade now to access this feature.

Navigating to the Hootbio section in the Hootsuite dashboard

To build your Hootbio page, start with basic profile information:

  • Profile name. This will show up as the heading at the top of your page.
  • Profile description. This is the subtitle text located below your profile name.
  • Profile picture. We recommend using an image aligned with the branding of your Instagram account to keep the look of your bio page familiar and on-brand.
  • Your website. This is where you create a URL for your link in bio page. We will let you know if a URL has already been claimed by someone else.

Then, add your links. Every link has to include a URL and text that will be displayed on the button. You can also add images to links, but this feature is optional.

To change the order of links on your page, simply drag and drop them using the triple bar icon.

When you’re done, click Update in the top right corner of the page.

You can also direct followers to your other social accounts — or your email inbox — using dedicated buttons.

Head to the Social section of the menu to set up links for Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, Messenger, and email .

To save your changes, click Update in the top right corner of the dashboard.

In the Design section, you can customize the design of your Hootbio page. Pick one of the recommended color themes, or customize your font, button, and background colors to make the page truly yours.

When you’re done — you guessed it — click Update in the top right corner of your screen.

That’s it! Your Hootbio page is ready. To start using it, copy the link displayed in the top right corner of the dashboard, and paste it into your Instagram and TikTok bios. You can update your bio whenever you need, but note that URL edits are restricted to once every six months.

7. Use your bio to direct traffic to another platform or website

If your primary social media is on a different platform and you consider Instagram a necessary evil, that’s okay — you can use your bio as a way to direct other users to that platform.

Comedian Ziwe Fumudoh rarely posts on Instagram, but is very active on TikTok, so she uses her bio to steer audiences towards that app.

Lush, weirdly, “departed” from social media but still has an active Instagram and uses their link in bio to explain why they’re not online.

8. Use line breaks

People don’t tend to read information online. Instead, they scan for bite-sized chunks of information.

Make that information easy to identify using line breaks.

Okoko Cosmetiques uses a combination of emojis and line breaks to create this cute Instagram bio:

It’s really easy to add line breaks using the Instagram web interface. Simply space your bio as you would like it to appear.

On mobile, your best bet is to create your bio with the spacing you want using a notes app. Then, copy and paste it into your Instagram bio field. Or, use one of the Instagram bio templates below.

9. Share your pronouns

If you want to, it’s great to share your pronouns on Instagram. Since the option was first added in May 2021 , it’s become customary on the app to add your pronouns to your bio, whether you’re cisgender, transgender or nonbinary. Displaying your pronouns means your followers will know how to properly address you, and normalizing the practice helps make everyone feels more comfortable on the platform.

10. Use Hashtags

Hashtags in your Instagram bio are clickable links. Keep in mind, though, that Instagram bios do not appear in hashtag search results. Adding Instagram hashtags to your bio won’t make it more discoverable.

That means you should not include hashtags unless they are directly related to your business, because each one represents an opportunity for potential followers to click away.

However, adding a branded hashtag to your bio is a great way to promote and collect user-generated content.

This is one of the best ways for businesses to use hashtags in their bio. When a user clicks on the hashtag, they will see all the content your fans and followers have posted, which creates excellent social proof for your business .

Branded hashtags are also a great way to get more content: you can reshare follower’s posts that use the hashtag. In fact, some users build their entire following off of user-submitted posts.

11. Use your bio to link to other accounts

If you have a personal and a business account, or you’re involved in a cool project that has its own handle, you can tag that account in your bio. This can help people identify you (Oh, THAT’S where I know Zendaya from) but be careful using them, as they may encourage audiences to navigate away from your page. (This is something Zendaya likely does not care about).

12. Add a category

If you have a business profile on Instagram , you can choose a category for your business. This appears under your name and can help people see what you do at a glance.

Elmo Instagram Bio

Source: @elmo

Elmo, for example, is a public figure.

Using a category for your business can free up space in your Instagram bio, since you don’t need to repeat this information. However, it only appears in the mobile view, so you can’t assume everyone will see it.

13. Announce news

As long as you remember to update your bio regularly, you can use it to announce news about new products and updates for your brand. If you’re going to put a date in your bio, though, mark your calendar or set a reminder to change it. If you have an old date in your bio, it makes your account look like it’s not being monitored closely.

36 Great Notes to Write on Polaroid Pictures

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. But we still look through old pictures and can’t remember exactly where they were taken or what was going on.

So, while pictures are great visual memories, writing a few well-chosen words beneath them can make them even more special.

You might be posting your newly minted Polaroid photos on Instagram and need a caption.

Or maybe you are hanging them on your wall and want to jot down a special note under each one.

Captions for Polaroid pictures on Instagram

Most of us are familiar with Polaroid pictures. They are taken by a camera that produces a finished print almost immediately.

They have a signature white border that is perfect for jotting down the date and place the photo was taken or for writing a special note.

Polaroid cameras have a unique filter that makes them the perfect way to give your memories a vibey VSCO aesthetic.

To get the best of both the digital and analog worlds, take candid Polaroids and then take a picture of your prints for Instagram.

If you are drawing a blank when it comes to writing something to accompany a post of your prints, check out this list of Instagram-worthy captions.

1. Memories in the making

Memories-in-the-Making-Polaroid-Caption

This is a classic caption, but it is particularly appropriate for Polaroids.

No matter how advanced our smartphone cameras get, there will be something special about the candid snaps of an analog camera.

If you are handing a Polaroid camera around at a party, you are literally asking your friends to freeze memories in time.

That makes this the ideal caption to post on the gram when you share your latest batch of Polaroids.

WordMe

2. Me and you, captured on film, 2 December 2022.

This makes a great caption for a Polaroid of you and your other half. Adding the date to an Instagram caption for a Polaroid is always a nice idea.

Even though Instagram will keep its own record of when you posted the picture, including the actual date the photo was taken gives this caption an old-school feeling.

A vintage-inspired caption fits perfectly with the aged aesthetic of a Polaroid picture.

You could also send this message and the Polaroid in a text to cheer someone up , because it would remind them of the good times you’ve had together.

3. It’s the flash for me

If your Polaroid picture depicts a very obvious flash, you could post it on Instagram with this caption.

This is a good way to inject a bit of humor into your post.

4. Do more than just exist

If the Polaroid you’re posting shows you doing an outdoor sport or is of you in a particularly beautiful setting, you can post it alongside this caption.

If you love adventures of all kinds, then this is the caption for you.

5. Simple pleasures

Simple Pleasures Polaroid Note

This is a nice caption for a Polaroid of you enjoying a coffee, meal, or good drink.

Alternatively, it would also make a nice text to accompany a picture of a walk.

6. Only a fool for you

If you’re posting a cute Polaroid of you and your boyfriend or girlfriend goofing off together, this is the perfect caption.

It would also be well suited to a nice photo of you two looking at each other with eyes that seem to be saying, “You are beautiful.”

7. Candid moments

Candid Moments Polaroid Note

If the Polaroids you want to share with your followers aren’t posed photos, then this is a lovely, short note to caption your post with.

It is a simple, accurate description of what the Polaroids show. It also has a vibey ring to it.

8. Polaroid photo dump of the best weekend

If you’re sharing a series of Polaroids that you took on a weekend away or on a holiday, you could caption the post “Polaroid photo dump of…”

This adds an extra twist to the idea of the photo dump, which is a popular way of sharing photos on Instagram.

Photo dumps are basically just a series of photos that relate to a specific event or time period, or just that all have something in common.

A Polaroid photo dump is a cool concept that takes two popular Instagram trends and combines them.

9. Frozen in time ❤️

One of the qualities that sets film photos apart from digital ones, is that they make you feel like you have captured a fleeting moment.

Because we can always lift our smartphones back up, press delete, and re-capture a moment in a similar photo, our on-screen photos can feel like they’re a dime a dozen.

This caption for an Instagram post of a Polaroid is a nod to the unique feeling film cameras give us of having captured a moment that only existed once.

10. Lately…

Use this caption if you’re sharing a series of photos taken over a longer period of time.

For example, you can use it if you’re sharing Polaroids that you took over the course of a month.

There may not be much to tie the Polaroids together, because they might all have been taken on different days.

This caption will help your followers make sense of why you are posting them together.

They’ll understand immediately that the Polaroids you’re sharing are a kind of summary of the last little bit of your life.

Don’t be surprised if people hop into your DMs and you find yourself constantly responding to “What’s up?” if the photos you’re sharing look like you’re having a really fun life.

11. We looked better in person, I promise

A funny Instagram caption can often boost the number of likes a post gets.

If you are sharing a blooper-style Polaroid of you and a friend not looking your best, this caption will add just the right tone to the post.

Given all the posing and self-promotion that happens on social media, people always appreciate someone who isn’t afraid to laugh at themselves.

12. Smiles for miles

Smiles-for-Miles-Polaroid-Note

If you’re sharing a group photo in which everyone is smiling, this is a cute, not-too-serious caption to post alongside it.

The rhyming gives this caption a fun-loving feeling, which will perfectly complement your Polaroids.

13. Take notes…this is how it’s done

You could use this caption on a particularly cool Polaroid of you doing something difficult, such as surfing an epic wave.

Or, you could use it on a silly photo of you doing something objectively ridiculous. For example, if you were in a hot dog eating contest, you could use this caption on a picture of you with ketchup all over your face.

Okay, sure, most people reading this probably don’t enter hot dog competitions, but you get the idea!

14. The stars aligned and we captured it with a little plastic camera

If you’re sharing a Polaroid of you at a reunion with old friends, this is a lovely caption to post with it.

It is both witty and sincere, and is suited to any kind of reunion, whether that is a school reunion, a meeting with an old friend, or anything in between.

Captions for polaroid pictures for girls

While there is a lot of overlap between what a girl and guy might write on the bottom of a Polaroid, there are many caption ideas that will tend to appeal more to girls.

Get ready for a whole heap of “girly” sentiments and cute ways to describe female friendship in this next part of the list.

And don’t worry, the boys will get their turn next.

You might want to take a sharpie to your physical picture and caption it IRL. Or you might be looking for a good, girly caption for a Polaroid you’re posting online. Whatever situation you’re in, this section has you covered.

15. Our friendship is as one-of-a-kind as this polaroid

Polaroids are unique. Once they’ve been printed, you can’t reprint them.

This is a beautiful idea that you can incorporate into a caption about friendship.

If you’re creating a Polaroid wall in your bedroom and want to write something on a picture of you and your bestie, why not choose this?

16. Girls just wanna have sun

The Polaroid you’ve taken will need to feature the sun—and you and your girlfriends—if you want this caption to make much sense.

If you took Polaroids during a day out at the beach, this would be a great thing to write on one of them.

Whether you keep it in your wallet or add it to your Tumblr, these words are the perfect addition to your picture.

17. Times like these >>>

“>>>” means “greater than.” So, this text essentially means that times like the ones you’re having in the picture are the best.

This is a cute way to express a longer thought in just a few symbols, which means it will fit perfectly on the bottom of a Polaroid.

18. All my favorite women in one place

If you have a Polaroid of a group of your girlfriends, this note adds a nice touch to the photo.

Calling your friends your favorite women brings home the idea that the picture means a lot to you and has captured a very important part of your life.

19. Soul sisters

Soul-Sisters-Polaroid-Caption

These are the perfect words to write on the bottom of a Polaroid of you and your best friend.

Soul sisters are two women who connect as sisters on a spiritual level, even though they are not actually related.

So many girls and women feel this about their best friends, so writing it on a Polaroid is a nice expression of how much you care for your bestie.

20. Moments are fleeting, memories are forever

Polaroids capture fleeting moments and turn them into memories that will last forever.

That makes this the ideal thing to write on an instant picture, especially if it was taken in the middle of a fun social event or an adventure.

21. Take me back to summer

Take Me Back to Summer Polaroid Caption

If the leaves are starting to turn, you might look at a picture of you and your friends soaking up the sun and just want to be back in a bikini.

If that’s the feeling that comes over you when you look at a Polaroid, you can write “Take me back to summer” on it.

You could also include the year if you want to make sure you never forget when it was taken.

22. Salty and happy, San Diego, 12.07.23

“Salty and happy” is a classic caption for a beach photo.

Add the place and date to help you remember which beach you’re standing on when you look at your picture in a few years.

23. Pretty girls turn heads, my girls break necks

If you and your girls are all dolled up in a Polaroid, this caption is a great way to go.

If you got it, flaunt it, and if you know that you and your friends look good, don’t be afraid to own it.

24. Thanks to Polaroid for making our messiness an aesthetic xx

There is something wonderful about film photography’s ability to make “unkempt” look “vibey.” If you have a great outdoor photo of you and your friends, why not add this funny text to it.

It shows that you know you probably smelled terrible, but that Polaroid’s natural filter has somehow just made you look cool.

Captions for polaroid pictures for boys

Guys tend to share less on social media than girls, and they also tend to take fewer photos.

The upside of this though, is that the photos they do take tend to be more epic.

They will always want to capture the particularly exciting times. As soon as someone is up a rock wall, or riding the barrel of a wave, the camera seems to come out.

Guys’ photos tend to be more adventure-based, and fewer and further in between.

This means that the captions they write on Polaroids will have a different feel to the ones girls use.

If you are a guy who wants to share a Polaroid on social media, here is a list of notes you could include as captions.

You can also just write them on the bottom of your Polaroid using a sharpie and keep the photo in your wallet as a keepsake of a great time.

25. Obsessively grateful for this life

Showing gratitude for the good things in your life is a good look.

In fact, gratitude is a great thing to write about when you’re bored , because it can boost your mood and give you a new perspective on things.

You can also show it publicly by posting this caption with your Polaroid on Instagram. Or you can just keep your gratitude to yourself and write it on the bottom of the photo as a self-care exercise .

Focusing on the positives and expressing appreciation for the good things in our lives never hurts.

26. Friends like these

Friends-Like-These-Polaroid-Caption

This is a great thing to write on a picture of you with a group of friends. The idea is that you can’t find friends like yours just anywhere, and that you can’t go wrong with friends like the ones you have.

It is an affectionate thing to write on a Polaroid that depicts you and your closest frines.

27. Us doing us

Us-Doing-Us-Polaroid-Caption

Whether you’re hanging out of the side of a tractor or alley-ooping on a basketball court, caption a photo that’s characteristic of you and a friend with, “Us doing us.”

All friendships look a little different. Whatever it is that makes yours special, capture it in a Polaroid and add this text to it.

28. When the reward is worth the risk

Do you have a Polaroid of you winning a competition? Or of you injured, showing off the fish you’ve just caught?

Whatever the success you achieved was, it you captured it on camera, this should be your go-to caption.

29. The adventure crew

If you have a picture of you and the boys in full kayaking gear, riding horses, or carrying trekking backpacks, this is the text to write under it.

Especially if you’ve taken a picture of you and a group of guys that you tend to do outdoorsy group activities with, this caption is ideal.

30. The boys

The Boys Polaroid Caption

There are roughly three types of friendship : best friends, close friends, and acquaintances.

Some men spend their time with just their best bro. Others spend it with a small group of their closest buddies.

Still others tend to hang out with a big group that they would loosely define as their friends.

Whichever camp you fall into, there is surely a group that you spend time with.

If you have a Polaroid of all of you together, “The boys” makes a great caption.

31. Warriors in a world of worriers

This caption only really works if the Polaroid it is under features you and your friends doing some kind of difficult physical activity.

You might have war paint on because you’ve just finished a football game.

Or, you might be all decked out in camo because you’ve been paintballing. Let’s just say you’ll know the right picture to use this text on when you see it.

32. The food dudes

There are no ifs, ands, or buts, about it. You know this note would be perfect for a Polaroid of you and your bros sitting down for some epic chow.

Whether you’re sitting down to big burgers, a table-length pizza, or a brightly colored sushi boat, you and your friends + food = the food dudes.

33. Beasts in their natural habitat

Again, another good caption for a photo of you and your boys in the wild.

Whether you were swimming, hiking, climbing, or doing something else that justifies calling yourselves beasts, add this caption to the Polaroid you took.

34. The day we beat the crowds and got the fresh pow all to ourselves

This one’s for the ski photo. If you know, you know.

Picture fluffy white powder and evergreen trees and you and the boys all decked out in good gear.

If your polaroid looks anything like this, this is the caption for you.

35. Chasing the sun

Chasing the Sun Polaroid

This makes a great caption on a surfy photo, or on a photo of you climbing a mountain just before sunset.

Or, really, for any photo that has any sun in it.

36. Bucket list item #234 ticked off

Are you standing in front of a famous monument? Are you on top of an epic peak? Are you dressed in an elaborate costume in the middle of the Rio de Janeiro carnival?

This is the kind of caption you have to save for a special moment, but it gets across the point that what was happening was an out-of-the-ordinary, once-in-a-lifetime event.
