Interesting Things to Write About

If you’re alive and not learning things, something is wrong.

Chances are, you’ve learned things from your adventures in adulting that would benefit others.

If you’ve learned a lesson that changed everything for you, write about that.

Then give yourself a chance to think about who might be interested in applying what you’ve learned. Who could use what you’ve learned to get something they want?

Everyone is good at something. Think about the last time someone said, “I wish I could ____ as well as you,” or “I’d love to know how you managed to _____.”

Or think of something you know how to do well now that you couldn’t do before. Do you know anyone who would be interested in learning how to do ____ or how to do it as well as you?

Do you have any advice for making the learning process easier and more enjoyable — or ensuring the best results?

Nobody is happy with just “getting by.” You’re no doubt working to improve your writing skills and knowledge in areas that matter to you, so how could you help someone else do _____ to get exceptional results?

Think of someone you admire — maybe someone who has accomplished a goal (or several goals) that you have.

If this is a family member or close friend, a Google search may not yield much, but that’s okay. If something about this person’s life has made a lasting impact on you, chances are, it will do the same for your readers.

Personal and inspiring stories make for great stuff to write about.

This could be a reaction to the status quo or to a decision made by your country’s government. It could be about your dissatisfaction with your own life or with the use you’ve made so far of your gifts.

It could be about education, about world events, or about something else that keeps you up at night.

Maybe you just want to spell out how “life should be more than this!”

Whatever it is that makes you want to crawl out of your own skin, write about it.

“You’re so ignorant!”

Hurtful. But, generally speaking, it’s true. It’s also probably one of the things that keep you going. There’s always more to learn, and what we know is tiny compared to what we don’t.

So, why not be grateful when you’re reminded of your ignorance, because it gives you the perfect excuse to keep learning?

If you’ve ever experienced the thrill of taking an insult or a long-held assumption and turning it on its head to reveal something exciting, you might enjoy writing a book about how a different way of looking at something can change your reader’s life.

Whether you’re talking about book marketing or interior decorating, change happens. New marketing tricks and designer trends come onto the scene.

Those who keep up with the trends and know how to make the most of them are in the best position to teach others about them.

Maybe you’ve picked up some tricks on growing heirloom tomatoes year-round, and you want to write a book about culinary window gardening for apartment dwellers.

Or maybe you’re a resourceful budget-hound with genius hacks for repurposing old socks.

Think about the short-cuts and MacGyver-level workarounds you’ve learned when desperation juiced up your brain for a glorious thirty seconds or so. That might be just the thing for an Amazon “Short Read.”

Writing topics that will help your reader improve the quality of their lives are good things to write about.

What if you knew that a certain style of shoe was ruining the health of the people wearing them? Or that your friend’s diet was aging his brain prematurely? Or that making one small adjustment in someone’s nighttime routine could result in at least a $12,000 a year increase in income?

Are enough people curious about the subject to justify writing a book about it? Try Googling phrases like “killer shoes” or “toxic food additives” — or something else that jumps to mind.

Maybe you’ve tried talking to people about it before only to see their eyes glaze over — but your online connections and email subscribers show far more interest. It still makes sense to make sure the interest is genuine and strong enough to justify the time spent researching, writing, polishing, and marketing a book .

Don’t be afraid to poke around and see what people think of the idea. Who knows what it might lead to?

Whether you’re helping readers find resources for living off the land or paying markets for poetry , a short but well-researched nonfiction ebook could be just what they need.

The information for a book like this is likely to be time-sensitive, so if you’re looking for a nonfiction book idea that will still be useful five years from now, this may not be the best option.

On the other hand, precisely because information like this changes so quickly, the demand for up-to-date information on finding things people need or want is likely to be high — at least for the year in which you write it.

If you want to keep it on the market, you can update it each year or create updated editions with the current year in the title.

Inspiring Things to Write About

A hybrid of how to and self-help, this book aims to help your readers improve their lives in some measurable (or at least observable) way.

man thinking, things to write about

It’s a step-by-step call to action as well as a chance to go deeper on writing topics most people only skim. Once you look beyond the easy takeaways, the implied challenge to make a change is harder to ignore.

Your job is to explain the two options your reader faces and to do so in a way that makes the more challenging option sound better.

What do you want to become? Have you become something you weren’t before? Can you help your readers do the same?

Whether that something is a superhero, a movie extra, the owner of a successful business, or something else, what if someone were to ask you, “How did you get to be a _____?” How would you answer?

You could say, “Now, that’s a great question. It just so happens I’m writing a book about that.”

Have you ever stopped what you were doing to marvel at the power of something most people overlook or take for granted?

  • Childhood memories
  • Comfortable shoes

Whatever you’re thinking of, there might be a book in it.

The trick is to focus on something that gets people’s attention (hopefully because there aren’t already dozens of books written about it) and shows them how they can use the power of that thing to get something they want.

You know how it is. You’re in the market for a new laptop to replace the one you ruined when you spilled coffee on it. It happens. And it usually happens right after your warranty coverage runs out. Typical.

So, while you’re shopping for laptops, you look at the features and think, “Wow! Laptops have come a long way since I bought my last one. But with all these options, how do I choose?”

This is where you might check out ConsumerReports.com or buy a few computer mags to read up on the best machines out there — even for frugal folks. But this could also be a good idea for a nonfiction ebook.

The more expensive the item, the more buyers are likely to be interested in a short book that helps them quickly narrow down their options.

It doesn’t have to be about consumer products, though. You could also write a book about how to choose the best job, the best neighborhood, or the best education for your kids.

People make choices every day. When the stakes are high, they’re more likely to pay for help in making the right ones.

Do you know the meaning of life, the universe, and everything? Or are you more interested in the meaning of your dreams — and those of other people?

Maybe you’re still working out what your friend really means when she says, “I’m fine” or “Sure, go ahead.”

You’re not the only one who wants to find meaning in the things you do, the things other people say, and the things that happen to you or to someone else. And if you can answer someone else’s burning question on the meaning of something, you may have a book idea worth exploring.

As changes go, the dramatic ones are usually the kind nobody wants. They may want the thing that brings change (like a wedding or the birth of a new family member), but even when something makes those changes worthwhile, adapting to them can still be difficult.

And not all changes come with something to soften the blow.

  • Foreclosure or eviction and relocation
  • Job loss (layoff or termination)
  • Death of a loved one

If you’ve been through a difficult change, and you’ve helped others get through the same ordeals, you may want to write a book about that process.

Random Things to Write About

If you love traveling and want to encourage your readers to go to a country you’ve explored, why not write a book about it? You can even find and interview others who’ve traveled to the same places.

Social media may be the easiest way to find them. You could ask if anyone would like to swap interviews — for a book or a blog post .

If you’re planning a trip of your own, and you’re thinking, “I could write a book about it afterward,” plan ahead to take plenty of pictures — including some of the foods you and your companions eat while you’re there.

When you choose a travel niche for your books, you will have endless fun things to write about and share your amazing experiences with other eager travelers.

You could also write a book to convince more people to try something that changed your life for the better.

Maybe you’ve discovered NLP and your small circle of acquaintances is getting tired of hearing you rave about it — but you know there are millions out there who’ve yet to discover its benefits.

Or maybe you’re a huge advocate for homeschooling, and you want to write a book that will help older kids design their own reading programs.

It’s not that you think everyone should be like you; you just want more people to benefit from the same things that have made your life richer and more fun.

Fear is a powerful emotion. Most of us are afraid of something.

Check out some of the possibilities:

  • Uncertainty
  • Being alone
  • The Instant Pot (I still haven’t used mine)

Fear can influence our decision-making even while we’re book shopping. If you can help your reader face and overcome a fear — especially one that affects their quality of life — you have a book idea worth developing.

Fun Things to Write About

Who doesn’t love to read harrowing accounts of other people’s embarrassing mistakes? Think of embarrassing moments you turned into entertaining stories for friends and family. Rack up enough of those, and you have a book!

Don’t be stingy with the mortifying details, either. Readers want it all. And sure, you can tell them what you learned from those mistakes, but they’ll probably figure that out on their own. Focus on painting vivid pictures they won’t soon forget.

You could also write a book about moments when someone caught you in the act of doing something you knew you shouldn’t have been doing. How did they catch you? What happened next?

Think of all that goes into renovating your home or workspace. Make a list of the things someone could change to make their home more relaxing, more modern, or better suited to their personality or specific needs.

Or focus on a specific approach to home improvement — like feng shui or minimalist. Maybe you know someone who redecorated their home with antique furnishings or who had to replace everything in the house after a flood.

What DIY resources would you recommend to someone who needs to replace their flooring or paint their walls before selling?

This could be your motivation to finally call your favorite experts on ______, so you can pick their brains for valuable insider information and then share it with your readers.

Depending on your book’s subject matter, you might not be able to disclose your interviewees names.

  • Interviews with Secret Service agents
  • Interviews with housekeepers for the rich and famous
  • “My pet saved my life” interviews.

Think of the possibilities! Brainstorm a list of fascinating information you could get from private interviews, and go with something that makes you think, “Oh, I would love to learn more about that!”

Preface this with a goal you have (or have had) that might seem impossible but that motivates you to keep reaching higher and higher. Which BHAGs have you met, and how has that changed the way you set goals for yourself?

What you’ve learned can help your reader. Have you revised any past BHAGs or broken them down into smaller, more easily attainable goals? Write about what that looked like, and how did it help? Did it renew your enthusiasm or slow you down?

Have you ever adopted someone else’s BHAG, only to find it wasn’t a good fit for you? And what did you do instead?

If you’ve ever smirked at titles like “The Engineer’s Book of Humor,” you know some jokes get a better response in some circles than others.

What kind of humor do you appreciate? And who else do you know who enjoys the same? When was the last time you had a good belly laugh, and what gave it to you?

  • Political humor?
  • A so-bad-it’s-funny dad joke?
  • A joke related to your work?

If you can fill the blank in the title with something, and ideas start to flood your mind, this could be a really fun book to write and to share.

You have a collection of letters you wrote to the editor of your local newspaper. Or you’ve written several personal essays you can easily tie together. Maybe you’ve written a few on the year 2020, for example, because you know this year will live on in people’s memory.

Collect those related personal essays into a book? Choose a title that captures the main idea tying them all together, and write more essays to fill in the gaps. You can even collaborate with other authors to write a series of essays on a popular subject.

Reading other essay collections can help you decide what to focus on.

Writing ideas are everywhere, and you could do worse than to check out Amazon’s bestseller lists — particularly for nonfiction books.

Take a look through your own library, too, to see if the books you already have given you some ideas for books you’d love to write.

Is there a book you’ve looked for but haven’t found?

Did you find the answers you were looking for, and could you include those in a book that would help your readers get closer to one of their goals or find something they want?

The best idea for your next book is closer than you think. Before you go to sleep tonight, make the intention (written, spoken, or both) of choosing the best book idea to explore the next day, and give your subconscious mind a chance to work on it while you sleep.

Keep a notebook or journal and pen close to your bed in case you wake up with an idea (or in case one hits you before you fall asleep). And when you’ve woken, give yourself some quiet time to reflect on your intention. Then write down whatever comes to mind.

And when you finish writing that new book , let us know!

What Were the Best and Worst Things About 2022 for You?

Put anything you like on your lists, whether news, sports or cultural events — or even details from your own life.

Rosalía singing into a microphone onstage. She is wearing a modified red leather jacket and skirt, and she is surrounded by dancers in black.

By Natalie Proulx

As the new year approaches and the retrospectives for 2022 roll out, we thought we would ask you for your own lists.

What were the top five to 10 best things about this year for you? What were the top five to 10 worst things?

You can put anything you like on your lists — movies, music, television shows or books you loved or loathed; news stories, viral moments on social media or sporting events that you thought were great or terrible; notable aspects of your personal, family or academic life; or a mix of all these things.

To help you look back on the year, check out a few of the “ Best of 2022 ” lists that Times critics have written. Then create your own.

In “ Best TV Shows of 2022 ,” for example, James Poniewozik writes about “Reservation Dogs”:

Every year I do my best-TV list in alphabetical order because numbering a bunch of shows that I love for very different reasons feels arbitrary and dishonest. It still does. But it would also be dishonest not to recognize that this was by far the best thing on TV in 2022, so here it goes. In its second season, this series from Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi became weirder, funnier and more heartbreaking, as its Indigenous teens tried to grapple with loss and hang on to hope — or, if necessary, steal it.

In “ Best Songs of 2022 ,” Lindsay Zoladz writes about Beyoncé’s “Alien Superstar”:

The moon is a disco ball and it orbits around Beyoncé on this commanding dance-floor banger, a studied but lived-in ode to ball culture and Afrofuturism. Like the rest of the remarkable “Renaissance,” the song’s focus flickers constantly from the individual to the collective, as Beyoncé’s braggadocious boasts of being No. 1, the only one , share space with her exhortations to find that unicorn energy within: “Unique, that’s what you are,” she intones regally, before a transcendent finale in which the song takes flight on a Funkadelic spaceship of its own making.

And in “ Best Theater of 2022 ,” Jesse Green writes about “Into the Woods” by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine:

New York and the world have seen innumerable revivals of this careful-what-you-wish-for fairy-tale musical that opened on Broadway in 1987. Yet none of them have felt as apt as the one that opened on Broadway this summer, after a brief May run as part of the invaluable Encores! series . Apt because with the Covid pandemic still taking a toll, the show’s theme of caring about community resounded. But also because Lear DeBessonet’s marvelously cast production (and as it kept extending, recast and recast) systematically returned the familiar story to its specifics, bringing out the human comedy within the tragedy, and vice versa.

Need more inspiration? The New York Times has published its critics’ lists of the year’s best movies , art , podcasts , books , albums , comedy , classical music performances , cookbooks , book covers , poetry , actors , dance performances , photos and more .

Or look beyond The Times at honors like Time magazine’s person of the year , The Washington Post’s best video games of 2022 , ESPN’s best sports moments or The Atlantic’s top breakthroughs .

Students, scan some of the sources of inspiration we’ve included above. Then tell us:

Which articles did you choose to read? Do you agree with the reviewers’ selections? What else would you want to include on those lists? Is there anything you would eliminate? Why?

If you were making your own “Best of 2022” list, what would be on it? What art and culture did you enjoy this year? What global, national or local events fascinated or inspired you? What breakthroughs in science or technology excited you? What were the highlights of your personal life? What would be your headline for the year?

What would be on your “Worst of 2022” list? What news events would make the list? What about pop culture, sports or anything else? What happened in your own life that you are happy to leave behind?

Another option is to make a themed list, like “ 11 Ways I Escaped Reality This Year ” or “ 10 Stages and Screens Where I Saw Connection .” Did you notice a particularly strong theme or pattern in your life this year, such as “escaping reality” or “connection”? What works of art, events in the world at large or moments from your own life relate to that theme? Title your list using the formula above (“10 Ways I ____ This Year,” for example) and tell us what would be on the list.

Choose an item from one of your lists and write a detailed explanation about why it made the cut. You can model your response after the descriptions you read in The Times’s “Best of 2022” articles.

A narrative essay is a form of writing that recounts a personal experience or tells a story, often incorporating elements like characters, plot, setting, and a chronological sequence of events. The primary purpose of a narrative essay is to engage the reader emotionally and convey a specific message or insight through the retelling of a significant experience.

Students engage in writing narrative essays as part of their academic curriculum for various reasons. First and foremost, this type of essay serves as a means for personal expression, allowing students to convey their unique experiences, thoughts, and emotions creatively. Additionally, the process of crafting a narrative essay contributes to the development of essential writing skills, such as structuring ideas coherently and organizing thoughts effectively.

How to Choose Narrative Essay Topics

Selecting compelling narrative essay ideas involves considering personal experiences, interests, and the potential for engaging storytelling. Here's a guide on how to choose narrative essay topics:

  • Reflect on Personal Experiences: Identify significant experiences in your life that have had a lasting impact. Consider moments of personal growth, challenges overcome, or lessons learned.
  • Explore Interests and Passions: Choose topics related to your hobbies, interests, or areas of expertise. Writing about something you are passionate about can make the narrative more captivating.
  • Consider Audience Interest: Think about the interests and preferences of your intended audience. Choose topics that resonate with a broader audience if the essay is for a class or publication.
  • Focus on a Specific Event or Detail: Narrow down your topic to a specific event or detail to make the narrative more focused and impactful. Avoid overly broad topics that may be challenging to cover thoroughly in a short essay.
  • Look for Universal Themes: Explore themes that have universal appeal, such as love, resilience, or personal transformation. Connecting with readers on a universal level enhances the relevance of your narrative.
  • Brainstorm and Freewrite: Generate a list of potential topics through brainstorming. Freewriting, where you write without constraints for a set period, can help unearth compelling ideas.
  • Consider Narrative Techniques: Think about the storytelling techniques you want to employ (e.g., flashback, foreshadowing) and choose a topic that complements those techniques.
  • Seek Feedback: Share your ideas with friends, peers, or instructors to get feedback on the potential impact and interest of your chosen topics.
  • Evaluate Emotional Significance: Assess the emotional significance of each potential topic. Topics that evoke strong emotions, whether joy, sadness, or excitement, often make for compelling narratives.
  • Ensure Personal Connection: Select a topic that you can connect with on a personal level. Your enthusiasm and connection to the subject matter will enhance the authenticity of the narrative.

Once you've discovered a topic that aligns with your mood, engage in brainstorming. Jot down all conceivable scenarios on paper and structure them into a distinctive outline for your narrative essay. Adhere to your professor's instructions diligently, as they likely address most of your inquiries. Tax benefits are generally broken into two major categories: tax deductions and tax credits. As you examine programs that could potentially apply to you, it's a good idea to know the differences in how tax savings can work.

In short, a credit gives you a dollar-for-dollar reduction in the amount of tax you owe. A tax deduction, also sometimes called a tax write-off, provides a smaller benefit by allowing you to deduct a certain amount from your taxable income.

Another consideration with tax deductions is that they won't do you much good unless you itemize your deductions, which only makes sense for people with a considerable amount of deductible expenses.

22 popular tax deductions and tax breaks

Here are some of the most popular tax breaks for the 2024 tax filing season, and links to our other content that will help you learn more.

1. Child tax credit

The child tax credit , or CTC, is a tax break for families with children below the age of 17. To qualify, you have to meet certain income requirements as well. The 2023 child tax credit (taxes filed in 2024) could get you up to $2,000 per child, with $1,600 of the credit being potentially refundable.

Note: The Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act of 2024, currently awaiting Senate approval, seeks to increase the potentially refundable amount to $1,800 on 2023 taxes .

2. Child and dependent care credit

The child and dependent care credit , or CDCC, is meant to cover a percentage of day care and similar costs for a child under 13, a spouse or parent unable to care for themselves, or another dependent so you can work. Generally, it's up to 35% of $3,000 of expenses for one dependent or $6,000 for two or more dependents.

3. American opportunity tax credit

The American opportunity tax credit , sometimes shortened to AOC, lets you claim all of the first $2,000 you spent on tuition, books, equipment and school fees — but not living expenses or transportation — plus 25% of the next $2,000, for a total of $2,500.

4. Lifetime learning credit

The lifetime learning credit lets you claim 20% of the first $10,000 you paid toward tuition and fees, for a maximum of $2,000. Like the American opportunity tax credit, the lifetime learning credit doesn’t count living expenses or transportation as eligible expenses. You can claim books or supplies needed for coursework.

5. Student loan interest deduction

The student loan interest deduction lets borrowers write off up to $2,500 from their taxable income if they paid interest on their student loans.

6. Adoption credit

The adoption credit is a nonrefundable tax break that helps taxpayers cover a certain amount of qualified adoption costs per child. The credit begins to incrementally decrease at certain income levels and completely phases once your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) exceeds the given threshold for that tax year. For 2023 (taxes filed in 2024), the credit maxes out at $15,950. The credit is phased out at MAGI of $279,230 or more.

7. Earned income tax credit

This earned income tax credit (EITC) is a refundable tax break for low-income taxpayers with and without children. For 2023 (taxes filed in 2024), the credit ranges from $600 to $7,430, depending on how many kids you have, your marital status and how much you made.

8. Charitable donation deduction

If you itemize, you may be able to write off the value of your charitable gifts — whether they’re in cash or property, such as clothes or a car — from your taxable income. Per the IRS, you can generally deduct up to 60% of your adjusted gross income.

9. Medical expenses deduction

In general, you can write off qualified, unreimbursed medical expenses that are more than 7.5% of your adjusted gross income for the tax year.

10. Deduction for state and local taxes

You may deduct up to $10,000 ($5,000 if married filing separately) for a combination of property taxes and either state and local income taxes or sales taxes through a tax break known as the SALT deduction .

11. Mortgage interest deduction

The mortgage interest tax deduction is touted as a way to make homeownership more affordable. It cuts the federal income tax that qualifying homeowners pay by reducing their taxable income by the amount of mortgage interest they pay.

12. Gambling loss deduction

Gambling losses and expenses are deductible only to the extent of gambling winnings . So, spending $100 on lottery tickets isn’t deductible — unless you win, and report, at least $100, too. You can’t write off more than the amount you win.

13. IRA contributions deduction

You may be able to deduct contributions to a traditional IRA , though how much you can deduct depends on whether you or your spouse is covered by a retirement plan at work and how much you make.

14. 401(k) contributions deduction

The IRS doesn’t tax what you divert directly from your paycheck into a traditional 401(k) . In 2023, you could contribute a maximum of $22,500 ($30,000 if 50 or older). In 2024, that limit rises to $23,000 ($30,500 for those 50 and above).

These retirement accounts are usually sponsored by employers, although self-employed people can open their own 401(k)s .

15. Saver’s credit

The saver's credit runs 10% to 50% of up to $2,000 ($4,000 if filing jointly) in contributions to an IRA, 401(k), 403(b) or certain other retirement plans. The percentage depends on your filing status and income.

16. Health savings account contributions deduction

Contributions to HSAs are tax-deductible , and the withdrawals are tax-free, too, as long as you use them for qualified medical expenses.

17. Self-employment expenses deduction

There are many valuable self-employment tax write-offs for freelancers, contractors and other self-employed people.

18. Home office deduction

If you use part of your home regularly and exclusively for business-related activity, the IRS lets you write off certain home office deductions for associated rent, utilities, real estate taxes, repairs, maintenance and other related expenses.

19. Educator expenses deduction

If you’re a school teacher or other eligible educator, you can deduct up to $300 spent on classroom supplies. Spouses who are both educators and file jointly get a deduction of $300 each, making them eligible to claim up to $600 on their return.

20. Solar tax credit

The solar tax credit , also known as the "residential clean energy credit," can get you up to 30% of the installation cost of solar energy systems, including solar water heaters and solar panels.

21. Energy efficient home improvement tax credit

The energy efficient home improvement tax credit , revamped under the Inflation Reduction Act, allows homeowners who purchased qualifying home upgrades, such as energy-efficient window, doors and heat pumps, to recoup up to $3,200 on those investments when they file their tax returns.

22. Electric vehicle tax credit

The nonrefundable EV tax credit ranges from $3,750 to $7,500 for tax year 2023. Taxpayers can also get a credit of up to $4,000 for used cars. Eligibility depends on a number of rules, including income, price of the vehicle and whether the car meets IRS manufacturing guidelines for qualified EVs.

What are tax deductions?

A tax deduction or tax write-off lowers your taxable income and thus reduces your tax liability. You subtract the amount of the tax deduction from your income, making your taxable income lower. The lower your taxable income, the lower your tax bill.

The IRS allows taxpayers to lower their taxable income by choosing either the standard deduction or itemized deductions. Before that, you can also make certain adjustments to your gross income by taking above-the-line deductions in order to arrive at what's called your adjusted gross income .

Above-the-line deductions

Contributions to a retirement account, health savings account contributions or student loan interest payments are referred to as "above-the-line" deductions, but it may be easier to think of them as "adjustments" to your income. These deductions are subtracted from your gross income to determine your adjusted gross income, or AGI . If you qualify, you can take them regardless of whether you itemize or take the standard deduction. Your AGI is important because it is the starting point for calculating your tax bill and also the basis on which you might qualify for many deductions and credits.

Below-the-line deductions

Below-the-line deductions, on the other hand, are qualified expenses that are subtracted from your adjusted gross income to help determine your taxable income. The IRS lets you take either the standard deduction or itemize. There are dozens of itemized deductions available to taxpayers and all of them have different rules. Examples of itemized deductions include deductions for unreimbursed medical expenses, charitable donations, and mortgage interest. Whether you choose to itemize or take the standard deduction depends largely on which route will save you more money.

What are tax write-offs?

The IRS doesn't use the term "tax write-offs" anywhere in the Internal Revenue Code, but the phrase has gained popularity as a synonym for "tax deduction" over the years. If you hear someone talking about a tax write-off, they're probably referring to certain qualified expenses — or deductions — that itemizers can take to lower their taxable income.

A tax credit , on the other hand, is a dollar-for-dollar reduction in your actual tax bill. A few credits are refundable, which means if you owe $250 in taxes but qualify for a $1,000 credit, you’ll get a check for the difference of $750. Most tax credits, however, aren’t refundable.

A tax credit can make a much bigger dent in your tax bill than a tax deduction, and you don't have to itemize to claim a credit.

» MORE: Tax credits vs. tax deductions

How do you claim tax deductions?

Generally, there are two ways to claim tax deductions: Take the standard deduction or itemize deductions. You can’t do both.

The standard deduction is a flat-dollar, no-questions-asked reduction in your adjusted gross income . The amount you qualify for depends on your filing status. You can learn more about standard deduction amounts here. People 65 or older, or who are blind, get a bigger standard deduction.

Itemized deductions let you cut your taxable income by taking any of the hundreds of available tax deductions you qualify for. The more you can deduct, the less you’ll pay in taxes.

The standard deduction has gone up significantly in recent years, so you might find that it's the better option for you now even if you've itemized in the past. Your tax software or tax preparer can run your return both ways to see which method produces a lower tax bill.

A tax credit can make a much bigger dent in your tax bill than a tax deduction.

"Tax rebate" is another term that lacks a formal IRS definition. It generally refers to a phenomenon where a federal, state or local government decreases taxes retroactively (in other words, after the tax filing deadline for a particular year), and then refunds taxpayers the amount that they overpaid under the new rules.

Tax rebates are a bit like refundable tax credits in that they involve getting money back from the government. But a tax rebate is typically mailed to taxpayers automatically, with no action required. To claim a refundable tax credit, on the other hand, a taxpayer generally has to file a tax return, and then receive the tax credit at refund time.

That's another difference between tax rebates and tax credits — timing. Taxpayers generally only receive refundable tax credits during tax refund season, while tax rebates can happen at any time of year.

There have only been a handful of federal tax rebates in recent history, but they're a relatively common occurrence among state and local governments.

It’s again this time of the year: I have to look back and try to wrap up what happened during the past 365 days. However, this year I feel relieved. My 2022 year review won’t have the aggressiveness of my 2021 recap , nor it’ll have the thunderstruck sentiment of 2020 . Things seem to be getting better. But is it really like this?

While Covid is still around us, lockdowns aren’t. So 2022 feels like a giant leap toward normality, even though nothing is actually very normal. There’s a war in Europe, inflation is killing incomes and jobs, the virus still circulates, and most of us worry about the (near) future.

Ever since I started this blog, the “Year in review” has been my most freestyle article. And although I never look forward to writing them because we all get a year older, the annual reviews give me some freedom to express myself. So, for 2022, I chose to make this article more visual: it’s split into twelve sections , and I share impressions and images that marked each month of 2022.

So, let’s see how 2022 unfolded.

Table of Contents

The 2022 Year Review

So, here’s a selection of 2022 moments. After this section, you can also see some of my smartphone photos and a couple of videos I shot this year.

January 2022: White days and nights

It doesn’t happen that often, but this year it did. On January 24, 2022, a severe snowfall hit Athens . The Greek capital enjoys pleasant weather year-long, and sunny days are the rule even in the winter. However, on the last days of January, a cold front invaded the city, and it snowed even in the seaside suburbs.

Some meteorologists warned about the snow, but no one expected what was about to happen. In less than 24 hours, the city was covered with a thick blanket of snow that resulted in severe problems: hundreds of drivers had to be evacuated from the biggest motorway in the city, and power cuts left thousands of households without electricity and heating for one or more nights.

I didn’t have electricity for more than 24 hours, and the low voltage destroyed my laptop’s battery and damaged its screen. Seen from a distance, staying next to the fireplace all night long and looking at the silver sky sending half a meter of snow overnight can easily be romanticized. However, it was a freezing night -and the damages weren’t compensated.

It took several days for the snow to melt.

February 2022: Stop the war

I couldn’t wait for the Berlinale . I love watching films during Berlin’s dark days and cold nights every February, and returning to the cinemas after the pandemic sounded like a February 2022 highlight. And indeed, I watched movies at the 2022 Berlinale wearing my face mask uncomfortably. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the month’s highlight.

On February 24, 2022, Russia’s War against Ukraine was initiated. A war in Europe (or, a war against Europe) was unthinkable. Yet, from late February on, Ukraine was under attack.

I’ve visited Ukraine several times in the past few years. As I often said to friends (and on this blog), I found it one of the most original countries in Europe. A year before the war, I was in Kyiv ; two years before, I was in Odesa . And now the country had to suffer from an unfair war.

On February 27, a massive anti-war protest took place in Berlin . It was the biggest in Europe, and more than half a million people participated. I joined the protest, and seeing a peaceful crowd walking in the streets of Berlin was definitely a moment to remember.

March 2022: back on (solo) track

I’ve been a solo traveler for my entire adult life. However, the pandemic made me almost forget how to travel alone. But in March 2022, after a tiring winter, I decided it was time to be on the road again. But it seemed I had to learn everything from scratch .

Where did I check for tickets? How did I decide on a hotel? What did I pack the last time? Did I ever prepare myself psychologically for traveling alone? And: why on earth did I travel so much alone?

I felt I had witnessed these questions for the first time. But, the day I decided to visit Gothenburg in Sweden, all these questions didn’t matter anymore. It felt as if the mind knew from its experience how to handle everything -and the body just followed it.

Gothenburg saved me -and it saved the blog. I flew to Sweden’s second-biggest city on March 18. It was cold but extremely sunny, and I think I even got a sun tan. Walking and cycling around a foreign city reminded me of what it feels like to escape from daily life for a couple of days and call home a random hotel room.

For me, that’s the only definition of luxury.

April 2022: alive in silence

The solo traveling mindset returned for good. I was hungry to see new places, and shortly after returning from Sweden, I booked a flight to a warmer -in terms of climate- country.

In April 2022, I visited Malta for the first time. Despite being a popular destination close to Athens, I always failed to visit it. But I was sure early spring in Malta sounded like a great idea. And indeed, it proved to be fantastic.

My faith in wanderlust was restored. I walked extensively around the tiny capital, Valletta , and I tried to trace Thomas Pynchon’s “V.” locations in the city. Then, I took a ferry to Gozo and visited the Silent City another day. I shot polaroids, I drank cocktails, and I saw art.

In Malta, I felt alive again.

May 2022: pocket neighborhoods

After exploring Osnabrück and attending a fantastic exhibition called “ The Art of Replication ,” I headed to Bremen.

Despite living for over a decade in Germany, I’ve never been to Bremen. In fact, I didn’t know that many things before deciding to visit it.

The city impressed me with its calm rhythms, but this was just the surface. I explored two pocket neighborhoods in Bremen : the medieval Schnoor and the red-brick Böttcherstraße . And while Schnoor covers a few blocks, the Böttcherstraße is just a street. Nevertheless, both had their secrets, and the sunny city of Bremen proved to be a great escape.

Germany, you are so pretty when you are sunny. Please try to be bright more often.

June 2022: by the sea (& the volcano)

The summer kicked in. After a long winter, I couldn’t wait to be next to the sea.

One night, I asked Barbara: where shall we go? We both knew that parts of this question were already replied: somewhere warm, without loads of people, somewhere where the food is nice, and the sea is welcoming.

We opened an analog map, brainstormed, and we considered the options.

As it turned out, there was only one option: Greece .

On late June 2022, we landed in Kos and took the ferry to Nisyros. It was the first time for both of us in Nisyros. What an island! The vibe of the active volcano is terrific and Mandraki, the island’s main settlement, is one of the most beautiful I ever saw. Then we took the ferry to Tilos . And then back to Nisyros. And then, to Kos.

What a fantastic holiday that was.

July 2022: a night with Autechre

It’s been a while since I last went to Herodeion for a concert . But summer nights are ideal for hanging out in the city center, and when my friend John mentioned that Autechre would play at Herodeion, I knew we had to go.

Barbara was also in town, and the three of us went to the concert. But it was not just a concert. It was an experience. The legendary duo Rob Brown and Sean Booth transformed not just the iconic Herodeion in Athens but the whole city. Eerie sounds combined with electronic music created an unforgettable spectacle.

Even though the Autechre concert in Athens took place in early July 2022, it was hands down the highlight of the month.

August 2022: long, lazy summer nights

There was not a single highlight in August 2022 -and this is a highlight by itself. During the darkest winter days, one of the things I daydream about is hanging out with friends in August . The days are hot but hanging out around my neighborhood in Athens is part of relaxation.

I work during the day, but at night there’s only one thing to do: go out, stroll around, have a drink, and cycle back home early in the morning.

And that’s exactly what I did. No highlights and no traveling. Just long, lazy summer nights.

September 2022: the return to paradise

Once again, Barbara and I returned to Anafi . That beloved September ritual is the time to visit Anafi and have vacations.

The warm days, the hike to Kalamiotissa Monastery , the delicious food, and seeing friends on the island. No, it didn’t last all September long, but it was a marvelous ten days vacation.

It was the first time I didn’t write anything new about Anafi. I just shot a POV video from the hike to the so-called Upper Monastery (you can watch it in the video section of this article). It was all about the sea and enjoying the priceless time on that return to paradise.

October 2022: we are back home

No, I’m not talking about returning home to Athens or Berlin. Instead, October 2022 was about an uprooted football team, AEK Athens , returning home after almost 20 years.

The 1999 earthquake severely damaged the home ground of AEK, and after countless adventures, the new stadium was inaugurated in September 2022. However, the first match took place on October 3, 2022, and this was a long-awaited moment. It wasn’t easy to find tickets, but no one could imagine being absent.

We arrived late at the stadium and entered something that felt like a dream. The pyro smoke had made everything invisible, and we tried to navigate through that artificial fog. Then, slowly, everything became clear, and the match started. Since then, we are back home.

November 2022: cold cats on the roof

The first part of November was mild. I kept cycling daily in Berlin, and one could easily sit outside for lunch without a jacket. But then, the temperature dropped around mid-November, and the days never returned to their previous warm status.

It was around the days of the first cold that I decided to visit Riga . I haven’t been to Latvia for more than 15 years. The timing was far from perfect: it was freezing in Riga. In Latvia’s capital, I also saw the first snowflakes this winter -but gladly, they didn’t stick.

I spent the days in Riga exploring its neighborhoods, the House of the Black Heads , and its fantastic art nouveau architecture. However, the cold was so severe that I returned to the hotel straight after sunset and spent two hours beneath the duvet. And yet, this wasn’t enough to get warm.

While I had a great November in Berlin, the days in Riga were the month’s highlight. And I crossed several times that famous house with the sculpted cats on the roof -I plan to write about it soon. I could only imagine how cold it was up there.

December 2022: new polaroid zines

I love creating polaroid zines . But during 2022, there wasn’t enough time to make new ones. Although I shot loads of polaroid films, I never had enough time to sit down and design new editions.

Gladly, I decided to make two new volumes on the cold December days in Berlin. I promised myself that the moment I’d step foot in Athens for Xmas, I should have the zines ready and go to the print shop first thing in the morning.

But since I watched several matches of the football World Cup, it meant that I should actually invent time for the zines. I ended up working on them always past midnight and before going to bed. And I managed to make them and print them when I got back to Athens.

I’m delighted that Polacosmic now has five editions. So, in December 2022, I added to the catalog the zines “ Divided Berlin Reunited ” and “ Greek antiquity .”

I’m proud of these zines. You can see all five editions here .

The 2022 Year Review: smartphone photography

I rarely shoot photos for the blog with my smartphone. I don’t think I shared more than 3-4 mobile photos over the years here. However, since the annual reviews always give me artistic and blogging freedom, I thought of adding some images this year. These are all taken with my old Huawei P20 Pro smartphone, and the photos below are post-processed in the smartphone.

Sharing them here makes me feel uncomfortable. But I think it’s nice to show some photos I don’t share on Instagram or elsewhere.

So, here’s the 2022 smartphone diary (click to enlarge them).

The 2022 Year Review: Videos

My 2022 year review wouldn’t be complete without some videos. While I wasn’t that productive in 2022 in videography, I shot some footage and made videos for my YouTube channel . So, if you are more of a visual person and prefer videos over text, here’s your chance to see some of the places I visited.

A video from the 2022 snow in Athens

My video from Gothenburg Sweden

My Malta 2022 video

Hiking in Anafi, Greece

The KGB Building in Riga, Latvia

Here’s to a great 2023!

I hope that you enjoyed reading my 2022 year review . I’d like to thank you for following my journeys and my blog over time. It doesn’t matter if you are a new or a veteran reader of the Letters to Barbara . What matters to me the most is that you embraced this blog and encouraged me to continue writing it.

I’m thankful for your e-mails, comments, appreciation for the shop’s products, the social media follows, and everything you do to support the Letters to Barbara . I wish you a happy 2023!

Looking for freelance work in 2022?

A lot has changed for writers since the rise of the freelance economy, the global pandemic, and an insatiable demand for social media content.

If you’re a freelance writer just starting out, or you’ve been at it a while, chances are pretty good you’re wondering what the future holds for freelance work this year.

What’s keeping you awake at night?

The usual suspects include things like:

  • Finding clients
  • Charging pro rates or raising your rates
  • Improving your craft
  • Breaking into a new niche
  • Making enough money from freelancing to quit your day job
  • Overcoming imposter syndrome
  • Self-publishing and book and marketing it
  • And much more

There’s certainly some things to be worried about in 2022. Some types of freelance work aren’t in demand any more. And rates for some types of projects continue to decline.

But the future for freelance work is far from dismal.

In fact, there’s a lot to be excited about. The year 2022 can certainly be your year to move up and earn more as a freelance writer.

We asked 10 experts on freelance writing, content marketing, and copywriting TWO questions about freelance work in 2022:

  • What are you most worried about?
  • What are you most excited about?

What’s the future look like for freelance work in 2022? Check out the predictions:

Founder of Hub + Company

Andrea Hubbert: Freelance Work Predictions

Andrea Hubbert

I’m very concerned that the musicians and other creators I passionately and purposefully provide services to are crippled with so much uncertainty that it’s a constant struggle to see light at the end of the tunnel… much less the need for copywriting services.

The same can be said for other markets where freelance writers may have spent years building a name and reputation for themselves. Poof, it could all be gone in a flash.

The good news…

It’s been great to speak with prospective clients whose businesses are growing.

It’s refreshing how many of them are ready to fully lean into their personalities and market their offerings with intention…to connect in ways that feel natural and true to them.

Thankfully, the days of empty platitudes and regurgitation from “gurus” seem to be fading fast. The conversations I’m having are around ways to embrace their own unique voices, and have it showcased in their copy – with panache!

Founder of Make a Living Writing

Carol Tice: Freelance Work Predictions

I’m most worried about the continued unpredictability of COVID and how it will affect writer opportunities. Everyone will need to market more than usual to have options if clients pause things.

I’m most excited about the growth of interest in longform writing! 2022 looks like the year for ghostwriting books, ebooks and special reports. I took three prospect meetings in the last 2 weeks of the year alone-ton of pent up demand.

In an uncertain world, the one thing thought leaders and companies looking to stand out can do is create their manifesto and get it out there.

Carol Tice is a ghostwriter, freelance writing coach, and the founder of Make a Living Writing .

Founder of Self-Publishing School

Chandler Bolt: Freelance Work Predictions

Chandler Bolt

I’m most excited about the trend that more people and companies are open to hiring freelancers and people from home than ever.

I’m worried about the effect of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the freelance industry. Have you seen the type of content some AI-software can create? There’s potential for AI to take away some writing jobs from the market and drive costs for freelance work down.

Chandler Bolt is the founder of Self-Publishing School and author of the book: Published.: The Proven Path From Blank Page To 10,000 Copies Sold.

New York Times best-selling author of the Left Behind series & online writing coach

Jerry Jenkins: Freelance Work Predictions

Jerry Jenkins

I’m not worried abou t anything in 2022. I’m not a worrier by nature.

I’m most excited about the future of my son’s TV series The Chosen and my novels accompanying each season: I Have Called You By Name and Come and See. ”

Jerry Jenkins is a 21-time New York Time bestselling author of the Left Behind series and an online writing coach.

Freelance writer and author of five outdoor books

John Soares: Freelance Work Predictions

Many of us are psychologically weary from all the adjustments and, for some of us, the deaths of people we love. I urge you all to be kinder to yourselves and to others, to try to improve your resilience, and to adjust your expectations of what you can realistically accomplish in 2022.

Regarding the latter, I’m just now finishing an excellent book about changing how we view and use time: Four Thousand Weeks by Oliver Burkeman. It’s a much-needed corrective to the “go-go-go, get-it-all-done-now” approach to time management that pervades much of modern society.

Key opportunities for writers in 2022

Freelance writers who specialize in one or more niches and excel at marketing will earn excellent pay in 2022, as they have always done.

Unless your plate is overflowing with high-paying projects, start expanding into new niches, either ones closely related to your current niches, or to niches that match your interest and expertise.

Self-publishing books is also a good option

I’ve been taking advantage of the pent-up demand for travel and outdoor exploration by publishing books on boondocking, hiking, and walking through Amazon.

It’s easier and cheaper than ever to turn your knowledge into a lucrative income stream. Numerous free resources online explain how to do it, and there are helpful groups on Facebook and elsewhere that will answer your specific questions.

John Soares is the author of four Northern California hiking guidebooks published by Mountaineers Books (Seattle), and several other books.

Editor-in-Chief at Smart Blogger

Kevin Duncan: Freelance Work Predictions

Kevin Duncan

With artificial intelligence software for content creation continuing to grow in popularity, I worry that too many good, talented people will give up on their dreams of writing for a living.

There are good, talented people who will look at the popularity of AI and choose to be greedy when others are fearful. These are people who see opportunity where others see chaos.

People who see other writers and freelancers throwing in the towel and think to themselves, “If you’re good at what you do, you’ll always be in demand.”

These are going to be great writers, and I’m excited about the prospect of discovering them, helping them on their journey, and seeing the amazing content they create.

Kevin J. Duncan is the Editor-in-Chief for Jon Morrow’s Smart Blogger , one of the world’s largest websites dedicated to writing, blogging, and helping people earn a living by working remotely.

Author, entrepreneur, & publisher

Matt Stone: Freelance Work Predictions

In 2022 my biggest worry is that the march towards consolidation of books, blogs, and information of all kinds into narrower and narrower channels will continue to proceed.

Search engines, Amazon, and social media sites are all continuing to favor “approved” works from their cronies rather than provide an even playing field to all writers and authors.

Big corporate interests continue to gain more and more influence over who is allowed to compete in the information and entertainment space that writers occupy, and no one has figured out how to effectively resist it.

In 2022 I’m most excited about children’s books! I believe that 2022 will be the year that Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP)…

  • Takes their hardcover beta out of beta
  • Makes typical children’s book trim sizes available in hardcover
  • And allows us to publish quality print-on-demand hardcovers in full color at a reasonable price per copy

This will be a gamechanger, allowing self-published authors to better be able to compete in one of the most lucrative publishing niches.

Matt Stone (also known as Buck Flogging) has been in the publishing industry for over 20 years; writing, publishing, and serving the indie author community with a variety of high-quality, affordable services, such as 100 Covers , 1000 Storybooks , Buck Books , BookAds , and others.

Copywriter, coach, & founder of the B2B Writing Institute

Sarah Greesonbach: Freelance Work Predictions

Sarah Greesonbach

Most worried about: I’m seeing data that indicates a surge in demand for freelance writing. And that companies increasingly view external contractors as part of their team.

This is fantastic news for finding work and building long-term client relationships. But it comes with a risk of being priced as an employee.

Freelancers must understand their earning potential and the real value (and cost) of being a free agent to make sure they price themselves competitively.

When you’re not a full-time employee, you need to be earning 2-3X a “normal” salary to make up for the:

  • And profits you’re missing out on

Anything less, and you’re likely taking on too much risk to make this worth it in the long run.

Most excited about: The other side of the “demand” coin is that clients are realizing how valuable freelancers are!

If you take the time and push through the awkwardness of writing your clips, gaining practice, and finding niches that excite you… the sky’s the limit for your writing income and the number of marketing managers and businesses that want your help.

I’ve said it before: no one’s going to pay a writer $200k. But I can find 20 companies that need $10,000 of writing work done in a year. That’s why freelancing is the future.

Sarah Greesonbach is a copywriter, coach and founder of the B2B Writing Institute .

Copywriter & founder of Be a Freelance Writer

Sophie Lizard: Freelance Work Predictions

Sophie Lizard

My biggest worry for freelance writers in 2022 is health and wellbeing.

I’m deeply concerned that far too few writers are taking time out to look after themselves — and with the obvious health concerns of COVID-19 hanging over all of us, we need to make staying well our highest priority.

Successful writer friends of mine have been cutting down their work hours to make more time for self-care, but many newer freelance writers are coming in with a “hustle” mindset that pushes them to work until they drop.

So here’s my PSA for 2022: It’s much harder to write well or earn well if you aren’t well!

The thing I’m most excited about for 2022 are the surprises we’re going to encounter this year.

Even in a “normal” year, we can’t predict some of the things that might happen — and right now things are not normal yet, so one thing we *can* expect is extra disruption.

Change creates opportunity, so it’s part of our work as business owners to make sure we’re in a good position to take advantage of great opportunities when they open up.

That means setting up your back-office systems to get shit done smoothly with minimal effort, and building your professional presence and reputation so that you’re confident to step up to the best opportunities you find.

Freelance writer & journalist

Williesha Morris: Freelance Work Predictions

Williesha Morris

I’m most worried that people still haven’t taken COVID seriously enough and that it will continue to affect every aspect of our daily lives for years to come.

So even though hybrid or online writing workshops are a welcome change, we won’t be doing in-person events any time soon.

This also hampers writers who spend a lot of their time doing interviews and prefer in-person ones. This will be another year of Zoom.

I’m also concerned the momentum behind the PRO Act is still leaving freelancers behind and, once passed, the confusing language will give the go ahead to companies to use us less frequently.

The good news… I’ve noticed editors and companies who have contacted me are more open to working together and negotiate when it comes to rates. This is a sign that quality writers are still very much in demand and that we should be demanding higher rates accordingly.

Williesha Morris is freelance writer and journalist based in Alabama.

There’s a lot happening in the freelance economy in 2022. But the future is bright. There’s lots of opportunities for freelance writers to move up and earn more. And there’s plenty of well-paying clients out there that need your help. NOW is always the perfect time to get started.

I had a wonderful inspiration from prompt number 49 “On Shaky Ground,” although it’s not exactly about an earthquake. I wanted to share it on here, so I hope you enjoy it!

Title: “Shaking Ground”

The ground’s shaking My heart’s aching I’m getting dizzy My mind’s crazy

On shaking ground It’s like I’m on a battleground We’re all fighting for love Dirtying our white glove

The ground’s shaking My body’s quaking Love is so cruel Making me a fool

On shaking ground We are all love-bound Stuck in a crate Nobody can avoid this fate

The ground’s shaking We are all waking Opening our eyes Everyone dies

On shaking ground Our love is profound Although we are separate Better places await

The ground’s shaking Death’s overtaking Heaven is descending The world’s ending

On shaking ground In love we are drowned

Awesome interpretation Amanda! Thanks for sharing!

heyyy, I have written something regarding prompt 27 and 96 The Night Charms.

Do you dread the dark; Or do you adore the stars? Do you really think the fire place is that warm; Or you just envy the night charms? The skyline tries to match the stars’ sparkle, The sky gets dark, the vicinity gets darker. The “sun” has set for the day being loyal; These are now the lamps burning the midnight oil. The Eve so busy, that everyone forgets to praise its beauty. The sun has set without anyone bidding him an adieu, Failed to demonstrate its scintillating view. The moon being the epitome of perfection, Has the black spots, Depicting an episode of it’s dark past.

And I sit; I sit and wonder till the dawn. What a peaceful time it is, To have a small world of your own. Away from the chaos, I found a soul that was lost. So tired, yet radiant, Trying to be someone she’s not in the end. That bewitching smile held my hand, Carried me back to shore, letting me feel my feet in the sand. The waves moved to and fro, Whispering to me as they go, “Oh girl, my girl This is the soul you have within you, Never let it vanish, For it alters you into something good and something new, Don’t let the cruel world decide, Don’t let anyone kill that merry vibe.”

Then I saw my own soul fade, Fly into my heart, For what it was made. Oh dear lord, The night’s silence became my solace, My life lessons were made by the waves. Who am I? What have I done to myself? Many questions were answered in self reproach, The answers were still unspoken with no depth. Oh dear night, What have you done to me? Or should I thank you for putting a soul that I see. The nights spent later were now spectacular, My darkness somehow added some light to my life, Making it fuller… Everyday after a day, walking through the scorching lawns, I wait for the the dusk to arrive, and then explore myself till the dawn.

This is so amazing I ran out of words. Very lit thoughts beautifully penned. Keep writing like this dude.❤🌻

That is beautiful, it inspired me to write about my fears, thank you!!

Thank you for the inspiration! 😀 This was based of 21 and 77 (I think those were the numbers lol)

Goodbye to the days when we played together in the sun Goodbye to the smile on your face and to all of the fun I look at you, so dull and blue How long before I can say hello to the real you You are worth more than you think At the very least, you are to me Though there are greater things that wait for you than the least You are worthy of the most, the greatest of things If only goodbye could be ‘see you later’ I want to see the real you again To your suffering I don’t want to be just a spectator I want it all to end Goodbye to my only friend I want to heal you but I don’t know how I wish I had this all figured out Please come back to me I just want you to be free

Thank u so much im more inspired after seeing these creative ideas. 🤗

Glad they inspired you!

Thanks for sharing Amanda!

That was beautiful! I am a writer too! I actually just finished writing one but, it wasn’t from this website, just kind of something that’s been on my head for a while you know? Anyways, again, that was awesome! I am a Christian, and I love seeing people write about that kind of stuff! 🙂

I am jim from Oregon. I am also a writer, not very good but active. I am a Christian as well as you are. Sometimes it is hard to come up with something to write about.

All of a sudden, I have started to write poetry. Do you like all forms of writing? I would enjoy reading some of you work if you would you would like to s if you would like to send me some.

i have written one about frozen time:

my brother will be drawing, his pencil wont leave the sheet, my mother hearing the radio, today’s news on repeat. my sister, in fact, is making her bed, she’ll be making it still, till the last bug is dead. me, on the other hand, i’ll be visiting you, i’ll see you in action, doing the things that you do, i’ll be happy to see you, just a last time, i’ll kiss your still lips, and hold for a while. then i’ll take a plane to saudi, where i’ll see my dad, he’ll be swimming with turtles, he will not seem sad. i have lived on this earth, for 15 whole years, time for goodbye, with not a single tear.

hey beautifully expressed…!!!

Beautifully penned 🌼

I love it I tried one out myself as well Change

She sat looking out the window. The sound of the piano’s cheerful tune ringing out throughout the room. The sweet smell of burnt pine emanating from her fireplace. The sky is blue and the sun shines bright. She closes her eyes for a second. She opens them again. The window is broken and scattered on the ground. The piano sits covered in ashes, every symphony played now just a distant memory replaced with a discordant melody. The room smells of smoke and ash. The sky is dark and rain falls on the remnants of her home. Not a living thing in sight, not even her.

Nice one Amanda. kind of tells me the chronology of love and its eventualities.

such a dilightful poem, thanks for the word that made the day for me. you are such a good poet.

Omg! What!! This is amazing! I’d love to feature this piece on my blog monasteryjm.com. I also love this blog post by thinkwritten.com, planning on putting the link in my next blog post so others can come over here to check it out! So helpful!

this is so great! I’ve been needing inspiration. this might work

Thank you so much for this article! I love the profundity and open-endedness of the prompts. Here is a poem I wrote, drawing inspiration from #56, “No One Understands.” I wrote this from the perspective of a psychic Arcturian Starseed in her teenage years and how the world perceives her spiritual connection; while at the same time hinting at the true meaning of her various baffling actions. Enjoy 🙂

Starseed – a poem on perspective

In the snow She stands alone Wrapped in shrouds of mystery Her gentle hand gloved with giving Caressing A violet stone

Math class is dismissed But there still she sits Speaking to the ceiling in tender tones A soft and healing resonance Murmuring sweetly of ascension to Another, dearer dimension

In homeroom Her classmate weeps Of missed planes and shattered dreams Quietly She strokes the hand of the suffering And whispers then of channeling Some celestial utopia called Arcturus Where she claims to have been.

Please feel free to let me know where I need to improve! I’m fourteen years old and only an amateur, so a few suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, love and light 🙂

#79 I don’t know why he was so mad Did he not get his mail Was he already mad Or did he only get bills

He swung his arm with force He caused a loud bang He hurt his own hand He left with some blood

He is the man that punched the mailbox His hand dripped blood on it He left it with a dent He left it alone after that

That’s great Michael, thank you for sharing your response to one of the prompts!

Awesome! That was simple and yet creative

Interesting tips and keywords for boosting inspiration. I’ve found some good topic for start writing. Thanks

sleepless nights (#96)

it’s never a strangled cry that drags me from my dreams, but a gentle whisper, there to nudge the socks off my feet, and settle me back into the sheets. i seem to wake before i’ve had a chance to fall to rest.

why is it that i can never sleep, but always dream?

sleepless nights rule my life and drag me by my toes, throwing me into a sky of black and blue. not a single star can break through this spillage. and i sit and wonder in a sea of sheets, rippling around me, why my mind can swim these dark, tangling waters and i never need to take a breath.

have you ever noticed how static-filled the dark is? because when i lay buried under these burdens and blankets, the world seems ready to crumble under my grasp.

i can’t sleep, but i can dream, of days when i wasn’t pulled struggling from bed but awoken into the light. i wonder how i ever survived the grainy sky’s midnight troubles, the oil spill of its thunderclouds, the sandpaper raspiness of the three a.m. earth against my throat.

oh, how i can never sleep in a world that threatens to fall apart.

this is amazing! i hope i can be this good one day

once again beautiful <3

Thank you so much for these prompts! They’re so thought-provoking.

You’re welcome! Glad you enjoy them!

Take me back to those days, When I was allowed to dream, Where no one use to scream. Take me back to those days, When I was a child, Where I never use to find reasons to smile. Take me Take back to those days, When I never used to lie, Where I never used to shy. Take me back those carefreee days, When I was far away from school days. Take me back to those days , where every one used to prase, no matter how foolish i behave. Take me back to those days, when i wasn’t stuck between fake people. Take me back to the day I was born, So that I could live those days again………….

so mine is basically a mix between 76 and 77… I made it for my literature club i recently began trying to make.

‘Listen to me’ Listen to me your words mean more than you think your opinion is worthy to be shared your songs are capable of being sung

Listen to me

your smile is bright your frown shows nothing more than you should be cared for like you care for us.

your laughter is delightful and so is everything else

dont let the past go hurt you find strength in the experience

are you listening to me?

can you here me?

because YOU matter

Nice, thank you for sharing!

Prompt #1 “Untouchable”

Grasping Reaching Searching for the untouchable The indescribable On the tip of my tongue My fingertips Close to my heart But warping my brain Yet understood in the depths of my soul Emotions undiscovered Words Unsaid Deep in the depths of my mind Hand outstretched Lingering on the edge Eyes wide open But somehow still blind Unattainable But still in the hearts of The Brave The Curious The Resilient They Seek the unseekable They pursue the unattainable Each man seeing it in a different aspect Each of their visions blurred Each distorted by Experiences Traumas Wishes Dreams Filtering what’s untouchable

Thank you, glad you enjoy it!

I had good inspiration from #51, locked in a jar. I used it more metaphorically instead of literally. So here it is: glass walls, lid screwed on tight, can’t escape, not even at night. From the inside, looking out, this is not who I’m supposed to be. I’m supposed to be bigger, I’m supposed to be free, not stuck in a jar, no room to breathe. I need to move, I need to soar, I need to be able to speak my opinions and more. So as I look down at my tiny self, in this glass jar, “let me out, I can’t take it anymore”, I say to the bigger me, the one ignoring my tiny pleas.

Just wanted to add a twist to this promt. I’m just a beginner in the art of poetry, but I tried. If anyone has any creative criticism, go ahead! #16: our of order

My brain is out of order My thoughts have filled it to the brim Of my deepest thoughts of who I am Who we are As people We are out of order Never focusing on what we want Our passions All we ever get is work on top of work Pushing us down and down Like a giant hand Squeezing us into the depths of our depressions Until We can do anything But take it Anymore

Thank you Ash for sharing your take on the prompt with us!

Thank you ASH for reminding we can do anything if we try

Was inspired by #77 listen up Listen up…….! When would you listen up! Seems! you have given up! No matter who shut you up! Stand straight and look up!

Look up don’t be discouraged Let you heart be filled with courage Listen up and be encouraged Let life be sweet as porridge

You might have been down Like you have no crown Because deep down You were shut down

There is still hope When there is life Yes! You can still cope If you can see the light Yes! Even in the night

Oh listen up! Please listen up and take charge, You are better than the best Listen up! And oh! Please listen up.

beautifully written!

I wrote a poem using prompt 21 and I’m so proud of it. Comment if you want me to post it🤓

I bet the poem you wrote about prompt 21 is really good. I would like to read it please.

Mental prison, what a way to be trapped, being hidden, being snapped,

Clear glass is all i feel, apart from people, I hope I heal, I will never be equal,

I am different I am hurt raging currents people put on high alert but no one cares

No one dreads many tears I only have so many more threads

One day I’ll be gone but no one would care I will run away from the death chair

But until then

Mental prison what a way to be trapped being hidden being snapped

One day this will all blow away someday I will be molded out of clay but until then I will be lead astray

This is so darn awesome. It’s so deep and evokes the deepest of feelings🥰

I wrote almost the same thing omg I’m turning it into a contest entry

Inspired by No. 1! I am completely new to poetry, but I love it so much already! Here it is.

Perfection is Untouchable-

Perfection waiting, out of reach

Will I never touch it?

It always remain

Untouchable

No matter how hard I try

I will never quite reach

It will always remain

Though many people have tried

And seemed to have come close

But perfection’s not the goal

‘Cause we can’t quite grasp it

Perfection will always be

For all eternity

Looks like you are off to a great start!

Of Course, Silly Billy Me

”Well shit, I guess I lost my opportunity” the youngster retort

You see, for him, it’s all about his hurt – but she’s so educated, knows more about the rules of English than the rest of us.

Thus, to me she said… You cannot use curse words in a court report… you need to paraphrase his quote.

Into her spastic face I smiled – and pled my case

If you were my English professor back in the day, I could only imagine how much further in life I would have been…

”Don’t you mean farther in life?”

Of course, silly billy me.

This poem is called Secret Keeper and was inspired by #92. I hope you like it.

Everyone has a secret, Whether it be their own, Or someone else’s, We all have one.

But what if, You met someone, Who had a secret so big, That telling anyone would lead to horrible things.

And what if, That person told someone, And what they told them, Was more horrible than anything they could have ever imagined.

What if, That person told everyone, And when the parents, Of the kid with the secret found out, They were furious.

What if, They kept doing horrible things, Even though everyone knew, Even though they knew it was wrong.

And finally, What if, No one ever helped, The little kid with the biggest secret.

On number 28 : Poision I wrote a poem for it and would like to share it. The poision of friends and love

Beaten, she lies there. For they may be mistaken. Laughter rings throughout the school halls; a pure disaster. The dissapearence of parents hast caused this yet no one stops it. “Your a disgrace!” She heard them say. While in place she cries “I don’t belong here! Perhaps im out of place..” But she is not misplaced rather.. Shes lost in space.

I miss when you called me baby And I was in your arms saftely I know we drive eachother crazy But I miss callin you my baby

Those restless nights when I couldn’t sleep You calmed me down with your technique Always reminded me I’m strong not weak If only I let you speak

My heart only beats for you My feelings for you only grew You understood what I was going through I will never regret knowing you

Your smile melted my heart I wish we could restart And I could be apart Of a man I see as a work of art!

Stary night painting poem I guess ill call it

I raised my paint brush to my canvas So I could help people understand this This feeling of emotion for this painting has spoken I see the light as opportunity As for the whole thing it symbolizes unity The swirls degnify elegance and uncertainty For this painting executes this perfectly Where as my paintings let me adress Everything I feel I need to express!

#56 WHITE NOISE Faded away In the background Unheard Not visible

Eardrums splitting from the screams Yet none seem to care Can even hear my cries for help? For I am screaming as loud as I can

Are you? For all we hear Are whispers in here

Fading away in the background Unheard, invisible Yet it’s there, not loud enough Not noticeable, but there White noise Blank and pure In the background Faded away, yet so clear.

Just need to listen So open your ears She’s screaming for help But it’s muted to your ears

So open ’em up And listen to the calls For faded away, in the background Not visible, but clear. White Noise. It’s there.

Hi guys, I’m kind of late joining in. I read the prompts and the poems posted and this community is a creative bunch. I liked #35 People You Have Known. I want to share it with you guys.

Bern, a friend from grade school was my seat mate as well Rob had always teased me so my young life was hell Neesa was pretty, she knew that she was my crush Miss Homel, our teacher was always in a rush Played ball with Buco and I got hit on my head Fell in love with Cia, dreamt of her in my bed Had a tattoo with Marcus and called it “The Day” Chub challenged me to eat two pies, I said, “No way” I had to go far away so I wrote to Charie In this new place I found a friend in Perry My Grandma Leng passed away, she was a doll My grumpy uncle, Uncle Zar was teased by all These people have touched my life for worse or better Won’t be forgotten, be remembered forever

I hope that you liked it. Thanks guys. Thanks Think Written.

#37 fix it Still new to poems, and I haven’t written one in a while. Criticism is welcome because I need some more inspiration since I haven’t been getting any.

This is the body repair shop where we fix humans that have stopped how may we help you?

the girl stumbled upon the front door and spilled her list of regrets out into the open

“we’re sorry, miss” “but i’m afraid your first kiss will just be a dear old reminisce”

“your heart is also one that cannot be mended” “for every shattered piece- their lives just simply ended” the sewing kit can’t sew the fragments of her heart back because there were way too many to backtrack

she cried her heart out and it went “plop!” her tears like a river and like a lightbulb flickering its last light she too, took her last breath and was put to death

This is the body repair shop where we fix humans that have stopped “it seems we have failed again today” “sorry we’ll just try harder again another day”

I did poetry prompt #7. I wrote about the street I grew up on. Luverne Luverne, I moved onto you at the age of three. We like to race up and down your pavement road, either biking or running. You keep safe the house that I grew up in, one that has six humans and three dogs. You shelter other houses, too, that hold family friends and best friends to last a lifetime.

Luverne, we love you.

-Margaret McMahon

I was inspired by the prompt poison. Monster Roses are beautiful and delicate, but flawed.

Every rose has thorns that cause you to bleed.

Its innocence and beauty draws you in.

Only then when you touch it, it poisons you.

Am I really such an ugly monster, that plants pain an watches it spread?

I would say no.

Wouldn’t we all?

But maybe, just maybe a rose doesn’t notice it’s thorns.

-Lilliana Pridie

You said you’re only just starting?! That was sooo good! No criticism here. 🙂

Sorry, that was meant for “Ash” but yours was amazing too! 🙂

Prompt number 8: Street signs STOP Stop look and listen Stop at the corner Stop at the red light Stop for pedestrians Stop for cyclists Stop for animals Stop doing that Stop drop and roll Stop doing something else Stop shouting Stop whispering Stop talking Stop being quiet Stop posting cute cat videos Stop forgetting your appointments Stop making plans without me Stop eating all the yummies Stop running Stop the insanity Stop shopping Stop the never-ending commentary in my head Stop stopping Stop

Thanks for making this site and all its suggestions and especially this space to post our work, available!

I wrote from prompt #72 about moonlight. Shining down like a spotlight, Illuminating everything around you. The pure white light, Paint your surroundings in a soft glow. The round ball in the sky, speckled with craters like the freckles on your face. Looking down upon the sleeping earth, A nightlight for those still awake, a nightlight for you. Guides you, pulls you, lulls you towards it. It caresses your face with the light, casting away the shadows of the night.

I liked it I just wrote a small poem dedicated to my tutor and tutor just loved it .I used 21 good bye . I liked it really.😊

I just took up writing so bear with me.

Based on #72 “Moonlight”

A full bed Just the left side filled Soft, cold, baby blue sheets wrap around bare feet

She sweetly invites herself in Dressing the dark in a blue hue through cypress filled air, like 5 A.M. drives in January on the misty Northern coast.

Damp hair dances across grey skin, Waltzing with the breeze to Radiohead’s “How to Disappear Completely”

Euphoria slow dances with Tranquility Heavy eyes give in to sleep

Ladder to the Sky I want to climb the ladder to the sky I’m sure all would be well and that I could fly The ladder would be sturdy but still give me a fright Because looking down I’ll realized I’ve climbed many heights The higher I climb the greater the fall The greater the fall, the greater the sprawl But if i ever get to the sky up high I would be sure to hug you and say “goodbye” Once I’ve climbed the ladder I’ll know Sometimes its okay to look far down below Life is full of failure but soon I’ll find Happiness is a place, and not of the mind We all have ladders to climb and lives to live We all have a little piece of us that we can give Because when we climb that ladder to the sky We should think “No, life never passed me by”

Hi Ray, I love your piece. It gives one courage to face the challenges of live and move on.

Thanks for sharing the prompts Chelle Stein. I wrote this sometimes ago before coming to this site and I believed prompts #1 and #88 inspired my writing it. kindly help me vet it and give your criticism and recommendation. It is titled “SHADOW”.

My shadow your shadow My reflection your reflection My acts your acts

No one sees me,no one sees you Programmed by the Ubiquitous, To act as our bystander in realism

Virtuous iniquitous rises on that day To vindicate to incriminate My deeds your deeds.

Thanks for the seemingly endless amounts of writing prompts. I’ve been working on a poem, but it isn’t much.

She’s got my head spinning, Around and around; She’s all I think about, I can’t help but wondering, Does she feel the same?

Of course not, I’m just a fool; I’m nothing special, Just another person; Bland and dull.

How could a girl like her, love a guy like me? But the way she looks at me, Her smile, I can’t help but to feel flustered; Is this just my imagination?

It must be.

Wow! That’s exactly how I feel! Amazing poem!

Thanks so much, I’m glad you like it. 🙂

A massive thank you to thinkwritten.com for these amazing prompts. Some of these prompts have now formed the basis of my upcoming poetry collection (Never Marry a Writer) scheduled for release on January 1 2021. I will also be leaving a “Thank you” message for this website in the acknowledgements section. You have inspired a whole poetry collection out of nowhere which is highly commendable. So booktiful that!

That is wonderful news!

So I didn’t use any of the prompts but I wanted some feedback on this; it’s not great but I’m working on improving my writing skills

I am a girl who is broken easily and loves music I wonder if things will ever be normal again I hear light screaming through the darkness I want freedom from the chains trapping me in my fear I am a girl who is broken easily and loves music

I pretend to float in the ocean, letting the waves carry me away from reality I feel a presence of hope like a flame on my bare skin I touch the eye of a storm, grasping the stillness it brings I worry about wars that a spreading like wildfires I cry when I’m not with the people I love I am a girl who is broken easily and loves music

I understand feeling hopeless when you have no control over what is happening I say our differences make us special I dream to be a nurse, to help others when they can’t help themselves I try to do my best in everything I hope that all mankind will stop fighting and live in peace I am a girl who is broken easily and loves music

HELLO EVERYONE.. THIS SITE IS JUST WOW, AS AND WHEN I WAS OUT OF TOPICS OR WAS NOT ABLE TO THINK UPON IT ..IT HELPED ME A LOT WITH HINTS TO BEGIN WITH MY ANOTHER POEM .. I M NOT A PROFESSIONAL WRITER BUT JUST A STARTER AND A STUDENT OF 12TH DIVISION.. I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE ONE OF MY SPECIAL CREATION , ALTHOUGH NOT FROM THIS SITE. HOPE YOU ALL WILL LIKE IT.

AU REVOIR GOODBYE UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN, I BID U FAREWELL UNTIL WE TIE AGAIN, SEE YOU SOON , SEE YOU AGAIN, LETS SAY GOODBYE FOR A BETTER DAY.

THE FIRE THAT BURNS IN OUR HEART , THE MEMORIES THAT PRESERVES OUR PAST. ITS NOT THE GOODBYE THAT WRENCH THE HEART , BUT THE FLASHBACKS THAT HAVE PASSED.

I RECOLLECT AND RECOUNT , MOMENTS THAT ARE HALF FADED AND RENOWNED, I ALWAYS FEEL SO CHARMED, THAT I HAVE SOMETHING, WHICH MAKES ME SAYING GOODBYE SO DAMN HARD.

TAKE A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE, WALK ON THE STREETS WITH GOLDEN TRAILS. FOR I M NOT GONNA WAIL, BECAUSE I KNOW I WILL MEET YOU SOON ON THE FORTHCOMING DAY.

I wrote a poem based on #101.

Thank you so much for the inspiration!!

And then it was there. What I had been missing. What is it? You may ask. Well, it’s quite simple actually. It’s the joy of music. It’s the joy of sitting down and making music. It’s the joy you feel when you look up at people admiring you. The joy you see in peoples’ eyes. I don’t know why I ever stopped that. The piano sat on the stage. Dusty and untouched. It’d been decades since I’ve seen it. I haven’t come to this stage since I lost her. After the concert. The last time I ever heard her voice. And yet here I am years and years later. Knowing why I haven’t been happy in so long. Of course pain is always gonna be there, But as I played a soft note on the piano, All of it seemed to disappear. It was as if all the weight on my shoulders got lifted. The melodious notes resonated around the hall. And for a few moments, I forgot about all the pain. I forgot about the tears. I forgot about the heartache. And as the last notes echoed around the hall, I was truly happy.

Prompt #92: Coming home with secrets

My mother’s radio sits in the balcony And it greets me with electric static Coming to this sheltering home is somewhat problematic Cause the walls are too thin, and it’s back to reality. Back to the running water that conceals the noise of cracks Crumbling behind my peeling mask, holding my face with wax An unraveled thread masking the makeup smile of a wakeup call That runs down to my chin and I keep under wraps. I take invitations to the mall, yet the space around me seems so small Nevertheless, I show my teeth with a big, shiny grin And suck a trembling breath through their thin slit Happy to wear tight jeans, to stop me from an embarrassing fall. The bath hurts on my skin, but even more to protect screams from the halls My head floats in the water, but feels trapped in its walls It cracks my head open with all these secrets inside me Before a blink of an eye, to my room I’d already flee. Not to the radio playing static or streets that won’t let me be But to under the blankets, where no one can really see The struggle to be a walking, talking, breathing secret That was thrown to the ocean in a bottle, wishing to be free. However, the words untold keep coming like ever so frequent Like adrenalized filled cops in pursue of an escapee delinquent All the more, my doppelganger and I have come to an agreement To take these secrets to our grave, that we nowadays call home.

Recipe for Happiness

Start with friendship, Then add time, A dash of humor, And forgotten binds. Mix it up, Till blended well, And make sure, To remember the smell. Put that bowl, To the side, Grab a new one, Add grateful sighs. Then add family, And a smile, Then sit back, And mix awhile. To that bowl, Add a laugh, A cheerful cry, And blissful past. Whip until, There’s heavy peaks, Then pour in, What we all seek. Combine the two, Then mix it well, Spray the pan, And pour it out. Cherish the memory, The beautiful scent, Of unity, And happiness.

My mother died when I was younger so this poem is about me sitting on the lawn at night shortly after she passed away. I was imagining better times, which is why in my poem I talk about how the girl is imagining ‘walking on the moon’ and she is gripping the grass tight and trying to remember the warmth of her mothers palms.

Sitting in the blue black grass She’s walking on the moon Watching specks of silver dance To the mellow tune Her fingers gripping the grass so tight She can almost feel The warmth of her mothers palms

The winds cold fingers

The winds cold fingers Tousle with my hair Loosening the soil My sobs are carried away on the wind

I would love to share this list (credited to you) with students participating in a virtual library program on poetry. Would that be possible/acceptable? These are great!

Wow! Thank you so much for all these awesome prompts! I’ve written two poems already!

D It was then I heard flapping G which sounded like clapping A my first ever round of D applause

D It stayed with the beat G while tapping my feet A I kept playing despite all my D flaws

D I took early retirement G though not a requirement A “Bad Buskers” all get D menopause

D I’m strumming the strings G and the echo it rings A but no jingling of coins as they D fall

Finn Mac Eoin

23rd July 2022

I love this Finn, where can we listen to your song?

Hello I wrote this in remberence of 9/11. Its now sitting in ground zero. A ordinary day to start  Same as any other Dad goes off to work again, Child goes with their mother. Vibrant busy city,  busses, cars galore Workers in the offices, from bottom to top floor. Throughout our life situations Hard times often do arise, Unfortunatly we never think of saying last goodbyes. That’s exactly what happened on September 11th 2001 A day that turned the world so cold When tragedy begun. Twin towers has exploded Co ordinate attacks, Al-Qaeda behind the planes That seemed to be hijacked. Thousands were killed instantly Some lives hang by a thread, Calls were made to loved ones Onlookers face of dread. Fears & screams while running As smoke fills up the air, News reports on live tv Helplessly they stare. On the news we hear the voices of all who are caught inside, Lying next to injured ones Or sadly ones who died. One man makes a phone call My darling wife it’s me, I’m sorry that I upset you And that we disagreed. My offices have been attacked they’re crumbling to the ground, A massive explosion hit our floor then instantly no sound. If I do not make it I’m stating from the heart, I love you darling, & in your life I’m glad to play a part. Tell the kids daddy loves them Continue well at school, Stand up for all your beliefs Don’t be taken for a fool. The wife is crying down the line Darling please don’t go, I love you darling so so much I’ve always told you so. He replied my darling im feeling really kind of weak, Breathlessly he’s coughing, he can hardly speak. If you ever need me just look up to the stars, I will hear your voices And heal up any scars. Suddenly all was quiet The wife screams down the fone, Darling can you hear me, don’t leave me here alone. The towers live on tv start to crumble to the ground, Clouds of smoke then fill the air The world in shock no sound. Crying at the images of all who has lost their lives , Mums, dad’s , Nan’s & grandads, husbands & wives. Rescue teams included and all those left behind To All who were among them,  all who did survive, All who were injured All who sadly died. Never in this lifetime that day will be the same For ground zero holds the memories Of every single name.

Those hero’s on that awful day who never thought about their life Who fought to save the innocent To keep each sole alive Those who were pulled to safety Those we lost in vein, Never be forgotten The pain will still remain We will never forget that tragedy For the days will never be the same. But may I say with all my heart In God we put our faith United we stand For eternity were safe Amen

This is a beautifully sad poem. You really wrote your way into my heart. <3

I wrote a poem inspired by number 72. Not really sticking to what it said but thought this was kinda close to what it said…

After dusk, the almost eternal night. The dark, winter sky, full of millions of tiny stars. The sky, a color of blue that seems darker than black.

Sunset, full of an array of colors. Purple, orange, pink, and yellow. Nearly all dark blue.

Right as dawn appears, practically the same sunset hours later. Light wispy clouds fill the sky. Orange, pink, and light blue diffuse in the sky as the sun awakens

Wrote one based off the recipe one (I don’t remember which number)

From the Kitchen of: any teenager ever For: Disaster Ingredients: Social anxiety Existential dread A crush Zero sense of self worth A single class together And no social cues

Steps: (Warning: Do NOT do this if your crush is not single) You’re going to try to talk to your crush. Just say hi. If that doesn’t work, don’t go forward with the rest of these steps. Once you’ve talked to your crush, overthink every single thing you said to them. Do it. Then you’re going to decide you’re stupid for overthinking it. Next, you’re going to wait until they begin speaking to you on their own accord. If they don’t, overthink some more. One day you will think your crush is waving to you in the hallway. They won’t be. They’ll be waving to their friends behind you. Play it cool and pretend you’re doing the exact same thing. Run into the bathroom and cringe at yourself. Keep talking to them and try to partner up with them for a project. If they say no, don’t continue further; you’ll only embarrass yourself. If they say yes, say you need their number for the project. Call them “about the project” and eventually segway into other topics. Continue doing this until you guys eventually call all the time for no reason. Ask them out. If they say no, do not, I repeat, do not act like it was a dare or a joke. It ruins everything. Say “oh okay. Well, can we still be friends?” and continue from that point. If they say yes, go on a date with them outside of school before asking them to be your partner. Eventually break up and either get your heartbroken or break someone else’s heart.

And that is how you make an average teenage disaster. Enjoy!

23 Sad Things To Write About (2022)

If you are looking for something to write about that will get your readers in a funk, well (unfortunately) this list is for you.

This list of sad and depressing topics is perfect for essays or stories that you want to make your readers feel down. From death and loss, to addiction and mental illness, these topics will leave your readers feeling sad and despondent.

If you’re all set to depress your audience, I don’t know what to tell you (in all seriousness: there is hope!), but you can use one of these topics in your next writing project, poem, song, or art.

What are sad things to write about?

  • Loss of a loved one
  • Being hurt by a friend
  • Drug addiction
  • Mental illness
  • Childhood abuse or neglect
  • Natural disasters
  • Terminal illness
  • Homelessness
  • Poverty and a dearth of resources
  • Lack of clean water
  • Lack of access to healthcare
  • Broken family relationships
  • The effects of classism
  • The effects of slavery on the U.S.
  • Lack of adequate nutrition
  • Jealousy and hurtful relationships
  • Gang violence
  • Intentionally or unintentionally hurting a friend
  • The effects of social media on personal self-esteem

All of these topics are incredibly sad and will leave your readers feeling depressed. Be sure to use them sparingly in your writing, as too much sadness can be overwhelming for your readers. But if you’re writing fiction, these topics can provide motivation to a character, provide an interesting angle for backstory, or create an interpersonal conflict.

If you’re writing about these from a personal angle, writing can help in the healing process–along with prayer and encouragement from friends. Please seek assistance when necessary.

Andrew Curran works to create an inclusive space for drag queens in Easthampton

MassLive recently asked readers to identify people who are leaders from the LGBTQ+ community throughout the state, working to make a difference in their own area of interest, be it politics, education, business or the arts.

Profiles of these leaders will be published through the rest of February. These are people our readers have identified as inspirational, who may be doing good acts for their communities. They are being recognized for their accomplishments, leadership and commitment to inspire change.

Andrew Curran as Magnolia Masquerade

Community: Northampton and Easthampton

His story: Andrew Curran writes, produces and hosts a monthly theatrical drag show at the Marigold Theater in Easthampton, called “The Muses of the Marigold Theater.” As the host, Curran takes the audience through a plot that revolves around his poltergeist, Magnolia Masquerade, and “whatever escapade she’s on or situation she’s in,” he told MassLive. The details of the plot, according to Curran, depend on the theme of the month.

“This work is important because it’s a meeting ground,” Curran told MassLive. “From young queer people to any Easthampton local, my work on the stage bridges the divide between many communities so that we all exist together in a harmonious way – we don’t always get to see that.”

“The only way to learn about each other in an authentic way is to be with each other, and with the current attacks on queer people in this country, it’s heartwarming to see so many people in and out of the queer community supporting the queer art we put on at my show,” Curran continued.

LGBTQ Leader Profiles

  • Worcester LGBTQ+ educator Stacy Lord promotes inclusivity in the arts
  • Cannabis entrepreneur Ture Turnbull is building ‘greener’ dispensaries, ‘brick by brick’
  • Nuri Sherif supports LGBTQ+ renters in Western Mass.
  • Modesto Montero leads with passion for education and encourages change
  • Discrimination only fueled Judge Mark Mason’s will to pursue justice

Both seasoned drag performers and new performers have found a home with The Muses of the Marigold Theater, Curran told MassLive.

Storytelling is the root of Curran’s work at the Marigold and the theater has built a “perfect pedestal” for queer art, they said.

“I always knew I would be famous, but I didn’t always know how. I’m not a singer, dancer, or actor. However, I still like performing and can perform!” Curran told MassLive.

After high school, Curran found a passion for writing and went to school for creative writing and english literature. But later on, in college and during the COVID lockdown, his passion for writing expanded to storytelling after watching “RuPaul’s Drag Race.”

“I was seeing the possibilities that drag could offer me for the first time. I don’t have to be a singer, dancer, or actor but can still do all of these things in a new way! My creative world was opening up beyond writing, I could embrace performing again too,” Curran told MassLive.

Curran started making lipsync videos which combined writing and performing. On April 27, 2020, Curran said he promised himself that if he ever fully did drag, his name would be something like “Masquerade.”

He didn’t start doing full drag until the Marigold Theater opened. He was asked to host a drag show there by someone who admired the lipsync videos he made during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I saw a golden opportunity to combine all of my storytelling skills onto a stage from writing to performing. And exactly two years later, April 27, 2022, Magnolia Masquerade possessed my body for the first time and my vision of fame finally formed,” Curran said.

In his words: “I would advise listening to Mariah Carey’s song, ‘Make It Happen.’ You have to take the initiative yourself to get your creative work done. We tragically live in a world where art is not always appreciated even if it is fundamental to us. So you have to find your voice, and find the motivation to make it happen, and make it appreciated.”

A History Of GRRM's Updates On The Winds Of Winter: 10 Key Things He's Said Since Game Of Thrones Started

  • The release of George R.R. Martin's novel, "The Winds of Winter," has been highly anticipated since the airing of Game of Thrones in 2011, with fans eagerly awaiting any news on its release.
  • Martin has faced immense pressure to finish the novel and provide source material for the TV series adaptation, but the book's delay ultimately led to an oversimplified ending for Game of Thrones.
  • Despite multiple updates and estimates from Martin, including progress updates during the COVID-19 pandemic, "The Winds of Winter" is still not finished, disappointing fans who continue to eagerly await its release.

Since Game of Thrones aired in 2011, book readers have eagerly waited for the next novel in George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, and he's made several comments regarding the anticipated release since. As Martin expanded his universe, the time between novels continuously grew. The previous novel, A Dance with Dragons , was released on July 12, 2011, six years after A Feast For Crows . But with over twelve years of waiting, The Winds of Winter is infamously late.

Game of Thrones was a cultural phenomenon, launching George R.R. Martin from a successful author to one of the world's most famous and prolific storytellers. With that notoriety came excruciating pressure to release his novel to provide the series with the source material to adapt. That ship sailed, and the series was left to resolve without his work. Martin's novels are in such high demand that anything he says about The Winds of Winter is a news story, as readers crave any nugget of hope for its release.

Every Game Of Thrones Character Killed Too Soon

"i’m not going to say", july 22, 2011.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly , George R.R. Martin spoke about The Winds of the Winter for the first time doing press for A Dance with Dragons . When asked about the sixth book, he responded, ”I’m not going to say. I’ve gotten in constant trouble for that. There’s an element of fans who don’t seem to realize I’m making estimates. I’ve repeatedly been guilty of an excess of optimism.” The statement, which he would later contradict by providing estimates, should have been the first sign of a long wait. A Dance with Dragons only grew his world, and more narratives to tie together make for a more challenging conclusion.

Who Wrote The Pink Letter? 6 The Winds Of Winter Theories That Will Decide Winterfell's Future

"i really look forward to publishing it in 2014", december 7, 2012.

In 2012, George R.R. Martin spoke with the Spanish blog Adria’s News , where he gave some brief updates on the novel: "I've already written 400 pages of my sixth book and I really look forward to publishing it in 2014, but I am really bad for predictions.” At the time, HBO was preparing for the release of Game of Thrones season 3, meaning he was already behind schedule if he wanted to stay ahead of the adaptation. The Winds of Winter is meant to be roughly 1,600 pages, meaning he was a quarter finished in 2012 , not accounting for the immense re-writes he described.

"I Still Have A Lot Of Pages To Write"

March 27, 2015.

2014 came and went without The Winds of Winter , and in 2015, it seemed increasingly likely that Game of Thrones would pass up the novels. In an interview with Access , he mentioned progress toward writing season 6, saying, "I still have a lot of pages to write, but I also have a lot of pages that are already written." Sadly, the lack of source material led to the downfall of Game of Thrones , which suffered from an oversimplified ending in the absence of Martin's structure.

10 The Winds of Winter Theories That Might Actually Be True

"anything i can do to clear my decks and get this done", april 3, 2015.

Shortly after the previous interview, Martin was asked by Entertainment Weekly about whether the novel could be published before Game of Thrones season 6 was set to air in the spring. In response: "Maybe I’m being overly optimistic about how quickly I can finish. But I canceled two convention appearances, I’m turning down a lot more interviews—anything I can do to clear my decks and get this done." The message got hopes up for a 2016 release date, and while season 6 made for one of the best Game of Thrones seasons , the book didn't arrive.

"But The Book's Not Done"

January 2, 2016.

George R.R. Martin's active engagement with fans via his blog is a blessing, and unfortunately, he's had to utilize it to deliver some disappointing news. In early 2016, Martin broke the news on his blog that he wouldn't be done by Game of Thrones season 6 and was done setting deadlines. He said: " But when delivery will be, I can't say. I am not going to set another deadline for myself to trip over. The deadlines just stress me out."

"I Think It Will Be Out This Year"

January 10, 2017.

Responding to a comment on his blog in January 2017, George gave an update on the novel, saying, "Not done yet, but I've made progress. But not as much as I hoped a year ago, when I thought to be done by now. I think it will be out this year." His comment clearly noted that while he saw it as a possibility, he could never say so with absolute certainty. And, of course, 2017 wasn't the year after all.

"I Do Think You Will Have A Westeros Book From Me In 2018"

July 22, 2017.

After the January comment, George R.R. Martin wasn't done in 2017. He returned to his blog to explain the concept of Fire & Blood , the prequel history book about the Targaryen Dynasty. At the end, he added a tease suggesting that readers would have something in 2018, saying, "I do think you will have a Westeros book from me in 2018... and who knows, maybe two. A boy can dream..." He was partially correct, as Fire & Blood was released in 2018 , tiding readers over in preparation for House of the Dragon .

"I Still Have A Long Way To Go"

June 23, 2020.

The COVID-19 Pandemic seemed like the perfect time for Martin to make some headway on The Winds of Winter . An Esquire article described a since-deleted blog post from the author, which quotes him saying, "I am spending long hours every day on The Winds of Winter, and making steady progress. I finished a new chapter yesterday, another one three days ago, another one the previous week. But no, this does not mean that the book will be finished tomorrow or published next week. It’s going to be a huge book, and I still have a long way to go." Not the most promising update.

"Three-Quarters Of The Way Done"

October 25, 2022.

In late 2022, George R.R. Martin provided an update on a live stream , claiming to be three-quarters done with the novel. Given that it'd already been over a decade since the novel was announced, and still having a quarter to go was daunting. After the Game of Thrones ending , The Winds of Winter became far more important, as lovers of his series eagerly await a proper ending.

"I Have About 1,100 Pages Written"

November 6, 2023.

George R.R. Martin's most recent update on The Winds of Winter has been one of the most disappointing. In an interview on Bangcast , Martin said: "I have about 1,100 pages written but still have hundreds more pages to go. It's a big mother of a book for whatever reason. Maybe I should've started writing smaller books when I began this but it's tough. That's the main thing that dominates most of my working life." 1,100 pages seems like significant progress, but on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in December 2022, he mentioned that he had roughly the same amount, meaning the past year had been primarily re-writes .
