A good school trip report should always include some diary-style entries. If it was a day trip, write up what your students did in the morning and afternoon. If you enjoyed a longer visit, you can separate out the activities from each day. 

However, rather than simply writing down the itinerary, make sure you explain how students felt, and what they learned. Adding little details like what the weather was like, and all the sights and sounds you noticed, can really help to bring your experience to life.

During the ride, our tutor explained to us what a field trip was and why it was conducted. We went to a zoological park. It was a different experience from classroom learning. We students grasped the concept much faster. The method of learning through experience was different. We could learn things outside textbooks.

This is done so that students can look into a particular topic from all possible perspectives enabling them to learn everything. It has also been proved that field trips are an excellent way for incorporating knowledge into young minds. This also helps students to learn and understand topics on their own without further explanations.

They help indirect learning and help students in finding things by themselves which is better than spoon-feeding information. This experience helps students to retain in their memories what they have learnt for a much longer period. 

Field Trip To A Butterfly Garden

They were also taught the importance of trees in nature. They pledged that they would not hurt mother nature and will prevent unnecessary cutting of trees. Thus, the field trip was successful.

Field Trip To A Cow Farm

One could see the huge machines used for milking the cows. The farm had a large number of workers. There was a veterinarian for weekly checkups.

There were employees cleaning the farms. There were separate employees for each pair of cows. Cows at this farm were given high-protein foods. The sheds were cleaned regularly to control diseases that might affect the cows. One could see the care given to the cows by looking at them. After the milking process, they are sent to a nearby plant for pasteurization and packaging.

There are special sheds for pregnant cows so as to give them special care. The calves are very well taken care of. The students could understand the importance of cleanliness and regular checkups. This experience made the students realise something new and made them learn new things.

How to Write a Visit Report

Whether you’re a student or a professional, a visit report helps you document the procedures and processes at an industrial or corporate location. These reports are fairly straightforward. Describe the site first and explain what you did while you were there. If required, reflect on what you learned during your visit. No additional research or information is needed.

Things You Should Know

  • Check the report requirements before writing down general information about the visit. Explain the site’s purpose, operations, and what happened during the visit.
  • Identify the site’s strengths and weaknesses. Add recommendations for improvement and describe what you learned there if you’re a student.
  • Give your report a title page, write clearly and objectively, and include relevant pictures in the report. Proofread it carefully before submitting it.

Describing the Site

Step 1 Look over the requirements of your visit report.

  • Reports are usually only 2-3 pages long, but in some cases, these reports may be much longer.
  • In some cases, you may be asked to give recommendations or opinions about the site. In other cases, you will be asked only to describe the site.
  • Ask your boss or instructor for models of other visit reports. If you can't get a model, look up samples online.

Step 2 Start the paper with general information about the visit.

  • If you visited a factory, explain what it is producing and what equipment it uses.
  • If you visited a construction site, describe what is being constructed and how far along the construction is. You should also describe the terrain of the site and the layout.
  • If you’re visiting a business, describe what the business does. State which department or part of the business you visited.
  • If you’re visiting a school, identify which grades they teach. Note how many students attend the school. Name the teachers whose classes you observed.

Step 4 Explain what happened during the visit in chronological order.

  • Who did you talk to? What did they tell you?
  • What did you see at the site?
  • What events took place? Did you attend a seminar, Q&A session, or interview?
  • Did you see any demonstrations of equipment or techniques?

Step 5 Summarize the operations at the site.

  • For example, at a car factory, describe whether the cars are made by robots or humans. Describe each step of the assembly line.
  • If you're visiting a business, talk about different departments within the business. Describe their corporate structure and identify what programs they use to conduct their business.

Reflecting on Your Visit

Step 1 Describe what you learned at the site if you’re a student.

  • Is there something you didn’t realize before that you learned while at the site?
  • Who at the site provided helpful information?
  • What was your favorite part of the visit and why?

Step 2 Identify the strengths and weaknesses of the site.

  • For example, you might state that the factory uses the latest technology but point out that employees need more training to work with the new equipment.
  • If there was anything important left out of the visit, state what it was. For example, maybe you were hoping to see the main factory floor or to talk to the manager.

Step 3 Provide recommendations for improvement if required.

  • Tailor your recommendations to the organization or institution that owns the site. What is practical and reasonable for them to do to improve their site?
  • Be specific. Don’t just say they need to improve infrastructure. State what type of equipment they need or give advice on how to improve employee morale.

Formatting Your Report

Step 1 Add a title page to the beginning of your report.

  • If you are following a certain style guideline, like APA or Chicago style, make sure to format the title page according to the rules of the handbook.

Step 2 Write in clear and objective language.

  • Don’t just say “the visit was interesting” or “I was bored.” Be specific when describing what you learned or saw.

Step 3 Include any relevant pictures if desired.

You might take notes during your trip, so you can come up with an interesting thesis for your assigned field trip report. For example, you might write about a shuttle launching or an unusual creature who lives in the wetlands. Field trip reports should include a compelling introduction, a well-structured body and a strong conclusion. Discuss your favorite elements of the trip, so your assignment reads like a personal observation report or narrative essay.

Lead with Interesting Introduction

Start your introduction with information that leads up to your thesis statement, which is usually the last sentence of your introduction. You might focus on an interesting anecdote from your trip or discuss particular features that made an impression on you. Use these tidbits to develop your thesis. For example, you might create a three-point thesis, such as "The wetlands in Florida have vulnerable ecosystems, experience climate changes and endure seasonal flooding." If your teacher wants a technical field trip report, start with an abstract -- a brief summary paragraph -- that clearly explains where you went and what you learned during the field trip. Use research or literature to support your statements in your field trip report. For example, if you visited a local arboretum, you might use information from display placards to describe your favorite types of foliage and their seasonal life cycles.

Provide Facility Details

Discuss the field trip location by describing the facilities and explaining what you saw or experienced. For example, if you visited an astronomy observatory, discuss viewing areas and the telescopes you used. Explain in your field trip report any new information or details that took you by surprise and include statistical data to support your findings. For example, if you visited an underground cave, you might discuss a particular type of bat or an unusual plant that grows in the cave. Use outside research or information from the tour guide to support your data, and cite your references clearly, so your teacher knows where you got the information. When possible, use academic journals or magazines to support details in your observation report of the field visit.

End with Compelling Conclusion

Conclude your field trip report with a summary of your overall experience, including reasons why others might want to visit the location. You might include a brief summary of a personal discussion you had with the tour guide or field trip facilitator or cite a distinguishable fact from your research. If you participated in any hands-on activities or your class was allowed to see behind the scenes, you might end your paper by discussing those highlights. For example, if you visited a science center, you might discuss fossils you examined, electricity experiments you participated in, or hands-on experiments with wind tunnels that allowed you to examine weather patterns.

How do you write a really good excursion report? Report, that sounds so down-to-earth. But a report doesn't have to be sober and dry. It is not about a summary or summing up of your excursion. Instead, there is room for all the questionable incidents, funny moments, shared experiences, the trip ... simply everything that makes your excursion special.   • Make a list of the real highlights of the excursion.
  • Collect the funniest experiences.

  According to Francis Bacon, travelling is a part of education. An excursion is not just a pleasure trip; it enhances the knowledge of the students beyond the four walls of the classroom. To provide such an enriching experience to students, ___ School Name _____ organise excursions to famous place every year.

Educational tours are part and parcel of the life of students. Students need rest and entertainment after working hard for many days. Excursions can provide them solace and help them form an escape route from the tedium of their nerve-wrecking hectic schedule of activities.

Their visit to Bhagshunag temple, waterfall, Tibetan Monastery and Tibetan Head Quarters were enjoyed by them. Students were mesmerised by the panoramic views of Triund Peaks and Mcleodganj.

Students of classes VII and XII developed love for nature and got real happiness when they got a chance to visit ‘Nainital and Jim Corbett National Park. The Nature walk along the river Kosi and bird watching session were something new for the students. The jeep safari into the Jim Corbett Park, visit to Naina Devi temple, Cave Garden, snow view point were savoured by them which paved the way to the repository of their memories. In the scorching heat of summers, when the continues stream of sweat drops roll down the temples, torturing the spirit, the students of classes VIII and IX picked up their rucksacks to head for an adventure camp at Sadulpul, looking forward to soak themselves in the nector of nature. They enriched their knowledge about flora and fauna, herbal plants and sought geographical information. Apart from it, the activities like trekking, river rafting rejuvenated their frayed spirits.

In this trail, a memorable trip was organised to Udaipur and Mount Abu for the students of Class X. Students got a golden opportunity to know more about rich cultural heritage of India and its past. A visit to City Palace and Museum, Maharana Pratap Memorial, Universal Palace Hall ignited their love for History as a subject. Sightseeing of Guru Shikhar Achal Garh, Delwra Jain temples, and trek up to sunset point enthralled them all to such an extent that it revived their fatigued spirits.

My class was taken on an excursion last month. A bus was arranged. We sat in it and it took us to all the places we had to see. We were all very happy. We sang on our way and the bus speeded through various towns and villages. The sound of the horn was a constant irritant but we could tolerate it because we were too busy having a good singing session in the bus.

We were going to Agra from Delhi. The bus stopped on the way at a restaurant. We all got off the bus to have some refreshment. Our teachers had to take good care of us lest anybody got lost. After half an hour we were on our way again Many of my friends started feeling a little sleepy and tired.,

Soon we reached Agra. We formed a line and entered the guest house where our stay had been arranged. We were to see Fatehpur Sikri and the Taj Mahal and leave for Delhi the following day. We left our luggage in the guest house, freshened up and were on our way to see the Taj Mahal.

When I first set my eyes on the Taj Mahal, I was speechless It is rightly called one of the wonders of the world. A white marble dream was before our eyes. Many students began to click cameras. I took a closer look at the work done on the marble Inlay work which is a special feature with the artisans of Agra was visible on the walls of the Taj Mahal.

We sat down over the grass and played some games. All this time we had the beautiful Taj in view. Time and again would look up to glance at it. I could not resist walking around it several times It took me long to thoroughly absorb the beauty of this masterpiece.

We left for Fatehpur Sikri after that, it was a great experience to see the tombs of the ancient Mughal kings and queens. History suddenly came alive. I asked my teacher several questions to satisfy my curiosity about various details.

It was a memorable trip. We drove back home but the return journey was filled with a bit of sadness, It was the end of great two days in my school life.

An educational tour was organized by our school on the occasion of world science day which comes on 10 Nov each year. Our school took us to Nehru science center which is in Mumbai to show us many things related to science and discoveries. Nehru science center is named after India’s first prime minister , Jawaharlal Nehru and was established in the year 1977. Our science teacher Mr Sandeep Singh sir introduced us telescopes and microscopes. He also explained their uses and showed us how to use it. We also visited the planetarium where we saw sky, planets and many more celestial objects which fascinated us.The most fascinating thing to me was a small rocket placed in the center which had the name PSLV- G. I asked our sir and he told me about the history of Indian researches regarding space science and our beloved sir Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. Our tour started at 7am when we boarded from our school in a bus. In the afternoon we were given lunch at 1pm after which our school took us to an amusement park. At exactly 5pm we reached our school back where our parents were waiting for us. We enjoyed the tour very much and hope to go on such tours soon to explore more about science and nature. I hope every school takes their children to educational tour as it gives us information regarding many areas and helps us bond with each other.

A School Excursion

Last Saturday was a very fine day. The sky was overcast. We did not like to read on that day. We requested our teacher to arrange and excursion on a river. He granted our request. We started on our excursion.

The river is at a distance of four kilometers from our school. Our worthy teacher decided to go on foot. We all agreed to his proposal. We started  in happy mood. We had hardly gone two kilometers when we met another school party. It was a happy union. We went further happily and merrily.

We went on shouting out of joy. Some of us were singing merrily. Both the parties enjoyed the natural sights on the way. There came upon a welcome shower on the way. It made the weather good. On our way we met trucks and buses. Thus talking , laughing and singing we reached the river. We crossed the bridge and enjoyed the sight of water flowing rapidly.

We made small boats of paper and floated them on the surface of water. Both the parties separated to enjoy themselves. My party which consisted of sixteen boys crossed the river in a large boat and reached the other bank. Other boys selected a lonely place. While we were in the boat we heard a farmer boy singing a song. We kept on wandering  for some time to  enjoy sights. After two hours we returned to join our companions.     

At about 12 o’ clock we had our lunch with a great joy. We stole some fruits and vegetable from the fields and enjoyed them. In the evening both the parties played a Kabaddi match. When the match was going on, one of our companions entered the water to bath. As he went further, the waves swept him away. He cried for help. I , being a good swimmer, at once jumped into the  river and brought him to the bank. When he regained his senses, we were very happy.

Soon it was the time to return. We were again on the road for home. The sun in the west had grown more pleasant. So the return journey was more enjoyable. We came back talking and walking leisurely. It was quite dark when we were again in the school compound.

From school we started for our homes all glad at having a good excursion.

Death of Nex Benedict did not result from trauma, police say; many questions remain

As police continued Thursday to probe the death of an Oklahoma teen who died a day after being involved in a fight that broke out in a high school bathroom, authorities announced a preliminary autopsy showed the student's death was not the result of "trauma."

The death of Nex Benedict, 16, has prompted widespread attention and nationwide calls for schools to better protect students who may be bullied because of their gender and sexual identities. Nex, a sophomore at Owasso High School, used they/them and he/him pronouns and identified as gender expansive, an umbrella term that describes people whose gender identity expands beyond traditional gender norms, according to the National Institutes of Health .

Nex had previously been bullied because of their gender identity, friends of Nex told an advocacy group . Authorities are investigating what led up to the fight and whether Nex was targeted because of their gender identity. A police spokesperson, Nick Boatman, told NBC News investigators have reviewed a video that shows Nex before and after the fight and will release it “at some point," the outlet reported.

While the Owasso Police Department said Wednesday that Nex's death was not the result of injuries from a fight, its statement added that the findings were preliminary and investigations by the medical examiner's office and the police department remain underway. The police statement provided no additional details but said an official autopsy would later be released.

"At this time, any further comments on the cause of death are currently pending until toxicology results and other ancillary testing results are received," the police statement said. "The official autopsy report will be available at a later date."

Nex's family says though many questions remain unanswered, the facts of the case so far are troubling. They plan to conduct an independent investigation, relatives confirmed in a statement issued Wednesday. They also urged officials to "hold those responsible to account and to ensure it never happens again."

"While at Owasso High School, Nex was attacked and assaulted in a bathroom by a group of other students," the family said in a statement issued by its attorney. "A day later, the Benedict's beautiful child lost their life."

What happened to Nex Benedict? Search warrant reveals new details

A search warrant filed in the Tulsa County courts Wednesday and obtained by the Oklahoman, part of the USA TODAY network, shed new light on Nex's death and the investigation, including that a detective asked a judge for permission to look for traces of blood and other evidence at Owasso High School.

Penny Hamrick, an Owasso Police detective, wrote in the search warrant that "officers suspect foul play involved and need to initiate an in-depth investigation into the death."

According to the warrant, police were called to an Owasso hospital shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 7 in response to a report that Nex had been injured in a fight at school. Sue Benedict, Nex's mother, wanted to report the assault and asked police to talk with school administrators about what had happened. She did not ask officers to pursue charges against the other students at that time, Hamrick wrote.

Nex was later discharged from the hospital. But shortly before 3 p.m. the next day, Benedict called 911 to report Nex was experiencing medical issues, including shallow breathing. She told the 911 operator about the altercation at school and said Nex had hit their head on the bathroom floor, Hamrick wrote.

Emergency medical crews performed CPR on Nex and drove them to a Tulsa hospital, where they were pronounced dead around 3:30 p.m.

In the search warrant, Hamrick said police may also look through school records, including photographs, documents and attendance data. Investigators have previously said they plan to spend several days interviewing students and teachers.

FBI, homeland security investigate threat against school staffer

Since Nex's death, a barrage of threats have been made against the Owasso school district and at least one credible threat is being investigated in conjunction with the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security, said Lt. Nick Boatman, a spokesman for Owasso Police.

Boatman said the message that prompted federal agencies to join the investigation included a specific threat of violence against a specific individual. Boatman declined to name the person or disclose any other details about the content of the message. 

Meanwhile, Margaret Coates, the superintendent of Owasso schools, announced in an email that all district schools will have increased security.

A news story that went viral about Nex's death included allegations that teachers failed to summon medical care for the teenager after the altercation, and that Nex was so badly injured in the fight that they could not walk on their own. Police and school officials said the claims were false.

In a statement on Facebook, the Owasso Police Department said each student involved in the fight "walked under their own power to the assistant principal’s office and nurse’s office" after it was broken up. A registered nurse at the school then assessed the health of each student involved in the fight, according to police. Though she determined that "ambulance service was not required," the nurse recommended that Nex "visit a medical facility for further examination," the statement said. Nex was taken to the hospital that afternoon.

Nex Benedict was a 'wonderful child,' sister says

Questions and grief over Nex’s death – at a time when debates over gender and sexuality are becoming increasingly common at school board meetings and legislative hearings nationwide – have spread far beyond the state of Oklahoma. 

On Wednesday, U.S. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said on X that he was devastated to hear of Nex's death and said more must be done to ensure "transgender and nonbinary students feel safe in schools and in our communities"

“Violence has no place in our school,” Cardona said. “It is our responsibility to protect all students by creating spaces where they feel safe to be their true selves.”

Nex loved to draw, read and play the video games Ark: Survival Evolved and Minecraft, according to their obituary.

“They were a wonderful child, and they were important to us in ways that are really difficult to articulate at this time,” said Malia Pila, the teen’s sister, in a brief conversation with The Oklahoman, part of the USA TODAY network . “They were really great, and we are incredibly sad.”

Nex Benedict suffered bullying, friends tell advocacy group

Nicole McAfee, who leads Freedom Oklahoma, said the organization has been working with some of Nex’s friends and others in Owasso as they process their grief over Nex’s death. The group is focused on making Oklahoma a safer place for people of all genders and sexualities.

McAfee said none of Nex’s friends currently felt comfortable being quoted directly in news stories but that they reported to Freedom Oklahoma that “Nex had been bullied for their gender identity for well over a year."

Jordan Korphage, a spokesman for the school district, did not respond to questions about whether the school had received prior reports of bullying involving Nex. He also would not say what grade Nex was enrolled in or whether the school had any groups aimed at supporting students of various gender and sexual identities.

State superintendent sued over student gender change restrictions

Ryan Walters, the state's superintendent who has come under fire for his efforts to prevent students from changing their gender in school records, addressed Benedict's death at a board meeting of the Oklahoma State Board of Education.

" We've had a lot of folks that have rushed to have an opinion and judgment there in the wake of the tragedy," Walters said. "There's little information available, and there will be more that comes out over the next few weeks as law enforcement is doing their investigations."

" We need to wait for those things to be done before we pass judgment," he said.

A student filed a lawsuit against Walters and the board in December over a rule barring students in the school district from changing their recorded gender without the board's authorization.

The board temporarily approved the rule in September. A month after the lawsuit was filed, it voted to make the rule permanent . In October, Walters dismissed court ordered requests from two school districts to change the gender on students' records.

This week, attorneys for the student asked a judge to move the suit from federal to state court, where it was originally filed.

In January, Walters appointed Chaya Raichik , the controversial conservative social media personality behind the "Libs of TikTok" account on X, to a library review committee. The account often stokes online right-wing outrage through videos and content criticizing or deriding LGBTQ+ and trans people.

The education board told the Oklahoman that the committee's purpose is to remove "pornographic or sexualized content from public schools in the State of Oklahoma."

FACT SHEET: President   Biden Cancels Student Debt for more than 150,000 Student Loan Borrowers Ahead of   Schedule

Today, President Biden announced the approval of $1.2 billion in student debt cancellation for almost 153,000 borrowers currently enrolled in the Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) repayment plan. The Biden-Harris Administration has now approved nearly $138 billion in student debt cancellation for almost 3.9 million borrowers through more than two dozen executive actions. The borrowers receiving relief are the first to benefit from a SAVE plan policy that provides debt forgiveness to borrowers who have been in repayment after as little as 10 years and took out $12,000 or less in student loans. Originally planned for July, the Biden-Harris Administration implemented this provision of SAVE and is providing relief to borrowers nearly six months ahead of schedule.

From Day One of his Administration, President Biden vowed to fix the student loan system and make sure higher education is a pathway to the middle class – not a barrier to opportunity. Already, the President has cancelled more student debt than any President in history – delivering lifechanging relief to students and families – and has created the most affordable student loan repayment plan ever: the SAVE plan. While Republicans in Congress and their allies try to block President Biden every step of the way, the Biden-Harris Administration continues to cancel student debt for millions of borrowers, and is leaving no stone unturned in the fight to give more borrowers breathing room on their student loans.

Thanks to the Biden-Harris Administration’s SAVE plan, starting today, the Administration will be cancelling debt for borrowers who are enrolled in the SAVE plan, have been in repayment for at least 10 years and took out $12,000 or less in loans for college. For every additional $1,000 a borrower initially borrowed, they will receive relief after an additional year of payments. For example, a borrower enrolled in SAVE who took out $14,000 or less in federal loans to earn an associate’s degree in biotechnology would receive full debt relief starting this week if they have been in repayment for 12 years. The U.S. Department of Education (Department) identified nearly 153,000 borrowers who are enrolled in SAVE plan who will have their debt cancelled starting this week, and those borrowers will receive an email today from President Biden informing them of their imminent relief. Next week, the Department of Education will also be reaching out directly to borrowers who are eligible for early relief but not currently enrolled in the SAVE Plan to encourage them to enroll as soon as possible. This shortened time to forgiveness will particularly help community college and other borrowers with smaller loans and put many on track to being free of student debt faster than ever before. Under the Biden-Harris Administration’s SAVE plan, 85 percent of future community college borrowers will be debt free within 10 years. The Department will continue to regularly identify and discharge other borrowers eligible for relief under this provision on SAVE. Over four million borrowers have a $0 monthly payment under the SAVE Plan Last year, President Biden launched the SAVE plan – the most affordable repayment plan ever. Under the SAVE plan, monthly payments are based on a borrower’s income and family size, not their loan balance. The SAVE plan ensures that if borrowers are making their monthly payments, their balances cannot grow because of unpaid interest. And, starting in July, undergraduate loan payments will be cut in half, capping a borrower’s loan payment at 5% of their discretionary income. Already, 7.5 million borrowers are enrolled in the SAVE Plan, and 4.3 million borrowers have a $0 monthly payment.  

Today, the White House Council of Economic Advisers released an issue brief highlighting how low and middle-income borrowers enrolled in SAVE could see significant saving in terms of interest saved over time and principal forgiven as a result of SAVE’s early forgiveness provisions.

President Biden’s Administration has approved student debt relief for nearly 3.9 million Americans through various actions

Today’s announcement builds on the Biden-Harris Administration’s track record of taking historic action to cancel student debt for millions of borrowers. Since taking office, the Biden-Harris Administration has approved debt cancellation for nearly 3.9 million Americans, totaling almost $138 billion in debt relief through various actions. This relief has given borrowers critical breathing room in their daily lives, allowing them to afford other expenses, buy homes, start businesses, or pursue dreams they had to put on hold because of the burden of student loan debt. President Biden remains committed to providing debt relief to as many borrowers as possible, and won’t stop fighting to deliver relief to more Americans.

The Biden-Harris Administration has also taken historic steps to improve the student loan program and make higher education more affordable for more Americans, including:

  • Achieving the largest increases in Pell Grants in over a decade to help families who earn less than $60,000 a year achieve their higher-education goals.
  • Fixing the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program so that borrowers who go into public service get the debt relief they’re entitled to under the law. Before President Biden took office, only 7,000 people ever received debt relief through PSLF. After fixing the program, the Biden-Harris Administration has now cancelled student loan debt for nearly 800,000 public service workers.
  • Cancelling student loan debt for more than 930,000 borrowers who have been in repayment for over 20 years but never got the relief they earned because of administrative failures with Income-Driven Repayment Plans.
  • Pursuing an alternative path to deliver student debt relief to as many borrowers as possible in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision striking down the Administration’s original debt relief plan. Last week, the Department of Education released proposed regulatory text to cancel student debt for borrowers who are experiencing hardship paying back their student loans, and late last year released proposals to cancel student debt for borrowers who: owe more than they borrowed, first entered repayment 20 or 25 years ago, attended low quality programs, and who would be eligible for loan forgiveness through income-driven repayment programs like SAVE but have not applied.
  • Holding colleges accountable for leaving students with unaffordable debts.

It’s time to change the way we write report cards to young students, as early as kindergarten. Instead of writing about them, we educators should write to them.

Businesses have learned that performance reviews are most effective when  written in the second person rather than the third person—to you rather than about you. This is a seemingly small linguistic shift. Ozlum Ayduk and Ethan Kross, professors of psychology, found that in the context of self-talk, it’s powerful to use someone’s name. But this understanding has not yet trickled down to report cards, our earliest forms of assessment and feedback.

Let’s imagine a second grader who just completed their first term at a new school. The teacher writes in the report card, “Bonnie is distracted and drawn to talking with friends frequently during math class.” Another section reads, “Bonnie calls out frequently during read-alouds, and while I appreciate her ideas, raising a quiet hand is the expectation in class.”

Perhaps these excerpts remind you of your own childhood report cards? They reminded me of my own. This language, which I modeled after countless elementary report card narratives, is ineffective and unconstructive.

Here is what second-grade Bonnie’s feedback could sound like: “Bonnie, I notice that you are eager to talk with friends during math class, and I am worried that you miss a lot of our lessons. I am wondering how we can assure you focus. We tried a new seating arrangement, but I’d like you to work with me on additional solutions.”

In this example, the teacher has respectfully addressed the student directly. The teacher empathizes and acknowledges efforts already made, and includes the student in finding solutions. While certainly not foolproof, this strategy, which honors the child’s perspective and role in their own learning, is sure to land differently with both student and guardian.

Researchers in the field argue that feedback to students from teachers is crucial to motivation and learning. But that feedback, when written exclusively in the third person, soars past students to guardians.

As a former elementary school teacher, I turned to my community for their perspective on the matter. Most shared that they had never heard of reports being written to students, rather than about them. Those who have seen a second-person model of feedback teach secondary grades (sixth grade and higher), and two of those teachers said they ask students to self-assess and collaborate on their scores.

All but one of the elementary (K–5) teachers I surveyed said their reports were written in the third person.

A teacher-authored article titled “Why I Don’t Let My Kids Read Their Report Cards” from the website Today’s Parent shares the opposing point of view: “I spend a lot of time writing report cards to give families a clear picture of how their child is progressing. But those comments are written for parents. Younger kids won’t fully understand what the comments mean and will often stop at the letter grades—which means they miss out on the important context of how that grade was achieved.”

While it’s true that for many teachers, the report card comments are written for guardians—that’s what schools mandate—it baffles me that we don’t interrogate this process. If it’s context that’s lacking, let’s give students the context. Let’s construct our feedback for them, in addition to their guardians. With sufficient professional development and feedback on language, this shift could improve student motivation and concepts of self-growth.

Asked about the idea of second-person report card narratives, Dr. Rebecca Silverman, an associate professor at Stanford’s Graduate School of Education and a mother of three, said, “Even young children appreciate when teachers acknowledge their growth, especially when they put in a lot of effort to learn something new or be able to do something that was initially hard for them.”

It’s true that families still need to hear from teachers about their children’s progress via report cards. But their young age shouldn’t exclude children from hearing directly from their teachers as well. Dr. Meryl Lipton, a behavioral pediatric neurologist, commented, “Students as young as kindergartners would benefit from refocusing the audience of report cards. This creates important opportunities for self-growth and furthers communication between student and teacher.” If report cards are our earliest performance reviews, then let’s shift our perspective to include students in their own feedback.

I don't have a question, this is just an overall review of my trip with the intention to help other travelers and maybe answer some of their questions. I went with my husband in December/2016.

- As it usually happens, prettier in person than in pictures. The red Square is truly stunning! And the city REALLY dresses up for the New Years. The decorations were all over the place and were an attraction worth seeing themselves, along with the many, many, MANY Christmas markets.

- The metro has to be the most efficient I've been so far( I've ridden the metro in New York, London , Vienna , Prague, Paris , Montreal, and Barcelona). The wait was around 30 seconds! And many of the metro stations are gorgeous and worth a visit! A lot of the ones I thought were the most beautiful are on the brown, 5 line. My favorites overall were Komsolmolskaya and Mayakovskaya stations.

- It is very easy to ride the metro, even though just a few of them have the announcements in English. We just had to be a little more attentive. It cost 50 rubles one way. You can also download their metro app, which helps you figure out which lines to take once you put in the "from" and "to" places. They have it in English. The app is called yandex metro

- I found the city to be very clean in spite of the fact that there were not many trash cans around.

- We did not feel unsafe. And we found that people in Moscow are very friendly and always try to help when we asked.

- In Moscow, they do not smile much but they always did smile when we said "spasibo"( thank you in Russian). It never failed! :)

- Besides riding the metro, we also used an app similar to Uber there that was ridiculously cheap called yandex.taxi

- The food was very good in general and the restaurant Pushkin was our favorite!

- I would recommend buying the tickets for the Kremlin there, at the ticket machines and not with a cashier. The reason for this is: 1) while we were there, there was a terrorist threat that closed the Kremlin and the Red Square . If you buy your tickets in advance, you might not be able to go on the date you chose if something like this happens and if you don't speak Russian, good luck trying to exchange it to another day. I'm not even sure they would. 2) we were in line to buy the tickets with the cashier. She did not speak English that well but did say the price in English and it would be about $100 dollars each!! I repeated the price she had just told me hoping she'd said "thousand" instead of "hundred" by mistake, but she still repeated it the same way she said it the first time. We said "no, thank you" and proceeded to buy the tickets at the ticket machine, by the cashier, for $16,00 each with no problem and no lines. We had not realized there were ticket machines until after we got out of the cashier's line. I don't think many people do since EVERYONE else was in line!

- Plan to be in line for a very long time to get into the Armoury museum. They have scanners in a lot of places in Russia( malls, stores, supermarkets, etc.) and of course they have one here. Just ONE. One person at a time at a very slow pace. We also went on a Monday and there were many school excursions there. Not sure if it was just that day, but I had to mention it here, just in case.

I think this is all I can think of right now. I'll add something if I think of something else. Overall, I really enjoyed my time there and liked it a lot.( I loved Saint Petersburg more, but still liked Moscow). I'll post a St.Petersburg trip report at the St.Petersburg forum.

Yes, re smiles, Russians think we are silly, and so their lack of constant smiles mistakenly makes us feel like they are somehow either unfriendly or sad...as for Metro, it is way better to get a card with N rides...or even a refillable card. One can get the price down to 35 rubles or so...a very good deal indeed...also, some cards will work on all forms of transport...Metro, bus, trolley, etc,

What terrorist threat? On what date exactly? Did someone in line tell you that?

I don't believe there was a threat in December that shut down the Kremlin with a couple of American tourists the only people in Moscow who would know about it.

Totally ungrounded speculation. What is much more likely is that you come there and find out all Armoury slots sold out for today and tomorrow.

Or, if you value your time more than a saved quarter and have a paypass/paywave card, don't buy any ticket at all and just pay with your card at the turnstile. Ironically you save this way too, as the paypass fare is 40 rubles per ride (as of mid-January 2017).

Speaking of, does anyone happen to know if features like GoogleWallet (swiping your NFC-enabled phone over the turnstile terminal) would work?

I distinctly remember trying it out a couple of years ago but, much to my chagrin, have absolutely no recollection of whether it actually worked...:-(

Never tried it myself but according to the news on the net it's supposed to be working since fall 2015. One caveat is that the news explicitly mention the three major Russian cell operators for this to work, it might not work if you still have your foreign SIM card in your phone.

1) Why in hell would I make this up? How would this help anyone?? You obviously were not there on that day; otherwise you would have seen it! So please, don't try to invalidate what I said based on thinking you know everything. No one in line told me that. There wasn't even a line to begin with. I actually was trying to visit the Kremlin and we couldn't get close to the red square or the ticket places for the Kremlin because there were barricades and police all over just signaling for us to go away and not letting anyone through. Of course I didn't know what it was right away but I saw it on the news later that it was a terrorist threat( not russian news, on the internet.Sorry you missed it!)

and before you say "the threats were on the stations..." yes! That's what I read as well on that day and of course , it's only common sense that they would close the red square and the Kremlin as they did. I know! Contrary to you, I WAS THERE! And I saw the police sending us away, not letting us through and the barricades.

Now, I will not keep going back and forth with this. I'm not on the internet to prove anything to anybody, to argue, to fight...I think this is ridiculous. I just thought of writing a helpful report. In the world of a know-it-all there's no opening for other opinions or experiences, only their own. So there's no point in arguing. Specially when the person obviously wasn't there. You should know this...you know EVERYTHING!!! Have a nice life!
