Why a Cosmetology professional needs a cover letter

A cover letter is a critical document in any job search, and this is especially true for cosmetologists. A cover letter is more than only a formality; it provides an opportunity for you to introduce yourself and make your qualifications stand out from the competition. It’s also your chance to explain why you’re passionate about the job and why you’re the perfect fit.

Cosmetology is a highly competitive and rapidly changing industry, and employers look for candidates with the skills, experience, and aptitude to stay ahead of the curve. Your cover letter should demonstrate your knowledge of the industry, your qualifications, and why you’re the perfect candidate for the job.

Your cover letter should address the qualifications listed in the job description and show the employer why you’re the right person for the job. You should also highlight your qualifications that make you stand out from the competition. For example, you can talk about your experience in different areas of cosmetology, such as hair styling, make- up artistry, and spa treatments. You can also discuss your certifications and any specialized training you’ve taken to stay up to date in the industry.

Finally, your cover letter should demonstrate your enthusiasm and passion for the job. Explain why you’re passionate about cosmetology, what you hope to bring to the job, and how you plan to contribute to the employer’s success.

In short, a cover letter is essential for any cosmetologist who wants to stand out from the competition. A well- written cover letter can make all the difference in a job search and help you get noticed by employers.

Writing the Perfect Cosmetology Cover Letter

When you are applying for a job in the field of cosmetology, it’s important to make sure you stand out from the competition. One way to do this is through a well- written, professional cover letter. Writing the perfect cosmetology cover letter is not only a great way to increase your chances of landing an interview, but also allows you to showcase your skills and qualifications in a concise and compelling way.

When crafting your cover letter, it’s important to keep in mind the unique nature of cosmetology jobs. Your letter should be tailored to the specific job you’re applying for, so make sure you are familiar with the position’s qualifications and responsibilities before you begin writing.

Start your cover letter by introducing yourself and expressing why you are the best candidate for the position. Showcase your relevant qualifications and experience that make you a great match for the job. Provide concrete examples of how you have used your skills to create successful results. If you have any awards, certifications or special training that make you stand out from other applicants, make sure to mention them here.

Next, explain why you are interested in the specific job opportunity. Discuss how your experience and qualifications make you a great fit for the position and how you can add value to the company. Make sure to demonstrate your passion for the field of cosmetology and explain what makes you excited about the job.

Finally, express appreciation for being considered for the position and provide a way for the employer to contact you with further questions.

Your cover letter should be concise, clear and professional. Avoid using overly technical language or clichés, and make sure your letter is free from typos and grammatical errors. With careful preparation and attention to detail, you can create a compelling cosmetology cover letter that will help you secure the job you desire.

What should be included in a Cosmetology cover letter

A cosmetology cover letter should serve as an introduction to yourself and your qualifications to the hiring manager. It should demonstrate your knowledge and skills in the cosmetology field and highlight why you would be an ideal candidate for the position.

Specifically, a cosmetology cover letter should include:

  • A brief introduction that explains your interest in the job and why you would be an ideal candidate for it.
  • A section about your qualifications and experience in the cosmetology field.
  • A section about your knowledge of the techniques and tools of the trade, such as hair cutting, coloring, and styling.
  • Any additional skills or certifications that you possess, such as knowledge of customer service, esthetician services, or management and business experience.
  • A closing paragraph that thanks the hiring manager for their time and includes your contact information.

How to format a Cosmetology cover letter

Introduction.

When applying for a job in the cosmetology field, an effective cover letter is an essential part of the process. It should be a concise, well- written document that is tailored to the specific job you are applying for and should outline your qualifications. The cover letter should demonstrate why you are the ideal candidate for the job, and should be formatted in a professional and engaging way that catches the reader’s attention.

Professional Experience

When detailing your professional experience in your cover letter, start by mentioning the name of the salon or spa where you worked, then provide some details about your role and responsibilities. Explain how the position has prepared you for the job you are applying for, and provide specific examples of the skills you have acquired. These skills could include hair styling, nail care, makeup application, facial treatments, waxing, etc. Be sure to emphasize any client service skills you have acquired as a cosmetologist, such as problem- solving, customer service, and working as a team.

Show the hiring manager

Common mistakes to avoid when creating a Cosmetology cover letter

  • Not Tailoring Your Message: It is important to tailor your message in the cover letter to the specific employer’s needs and to the job you are applying for. A generic cover letter won’t show the employer that you have taken the time to research the company and the job.

  • Not Proofreading: One of the biggest mistakes you can make when writing a cover letter is not proofreading it. Make sure to read through your cover letter multiple times, including out loud. Have another person read it as well to ensure there are no typos, mistakes, or grammar errors.
  • Not Demonstrating Your Skills: Your cover letter should focus on how your skills and experience make you the best candidate for the job. Talk about how you used your cosmetology skills to benefit employers in the past and how you plan to do the same for them.
  • Not Explaining Why You Are Applying: Don’t just say that you are applying for the position and leave it at that. Explain why you are applying and why you think you would be a great fit for the role. Show your enthusiasm and passion for the job.
  • Not Adding Your Contact Information: Make sure to add your contact information to the cover letter, including your phone number, email address, and website (if you have one). This will make it easier for the employer to contact you if they are interested in your application.

perfect cover letter for cosmetologist

The ideal entry-level cosmetology cover letter to your dream job!

cosmetology cover letter

  • January 5, 2024

When I finished school, it took me a while to get my first job. It wasn’t like I wasn’t trying : I was sending applications off every day.

But, no matter how many resumes I sent, I just wasn’t hearing back. Annoying, right?

Then, one day, my luck changed. You see, my friend gave me some sound advice:  ‘You never get a second chance to make a first impression.’

Cosmetology cover letter

And then I realized, that’s exactly what a cover letter is: it’s the  first impression .

It’s the first chance an employer has to get to know you .

So, instead of firing off lots of applications, I started concentrating on writing the best cover letters possible. And soon I had a job!

Why is My Cover Letter Important

You see, too often, people underestimate the importance of a good cover letter. But, that is a mistake.

A cover letter is your first opportunity to catch a recruiter’s attention.  Especially when you’re applying to work at a smaller business, like a salon. And that means that it’s the first step towards landing an interview and getting your dream job .

But where do you start? How exactly do you write a cover letter that will make you stand out? As a newly qualified cosmetologist, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

And that’s where we come in. We’re here to help you every step of the way in your cosmetology career. So sit back, grab a notebook, and let’s look at how to write the ideal entry-level cosmetology letter to help you land your dream job!

Let’s start with the basics:

What is a cover letter?

OK, so we’ve said that a cover letter is the first impression you make on an employer, but what exactly is it?

Don’t worry, lots of people find cover letters confusing to start with. Luckily, the concept is quite straightforward…

A cover letter is a brief and professional letter of introduction. It tells the reader:

  • Who you are
  • What job you’re applying for
  • And, why they should invite you for an interview

Many people struggle to see the point of a cover letter. Won’t your resume tell your prospective employer everything they need to know?

Well, not really.

What is The Point of a Cover Letter?

Whilst your resume is designed to lay out the facts , your cover letter is more personal. It explains how you meet the requirements of the job you’re applying for, and it gives the employer a glimpse of your personality.

Plus, when you’re first starting out, your work experience can be a little thin on the ground. You don’t have years of experience in top salons to make you stand out, so you need a different way to catch the recruiter’s attention.

Think about it, your prospective employer probably has lots of applications to sort through. And they can’t invite everyone in for an interview… So, how do they choose between candidates?

Well, would you prefer to employ someone whose passion and dedication is obvious through their cover letter or someone who has just submitted a standard resume?

Right, so we’ve established that cover letters are important. What’s next?

What makes the ideal entry-level cosmetology cover letter?

The ideal entry-level cosmetology cover letter shows the employer why you’d be a great addition to their team. And, it doesn’t let a lack of professional salon experience hold the applicant back.

Instead, an ideal entry-level cosmetology cover letter:

  • Is professional and well-formatted
  • Is positive and show the employer how you meet the requirements of the role
  • And makes a fantastic first impression

So, how do I make a great first impression with my cover letter?

Cosmetology cover letter

Of course, knowing what makes an entry-level cosmetology cover letter ideal is only part of the battle. To make a fantastic first impression, you need to know how to sell yourself.

So, how do you do this?

Well, the first step is to create a new cover letter for every application. I know that this can feel like a lot of work, but a generic cover letter is unlikely to be successful… it just doesn’t stand out.

So, start by doing your research.

Read the job advert carefully, and pinpoint what they are looking for in a candidate.

If they’ve included a personal specification in their advert, this process will be fairly straightforward. Simply take each requirement individually and think about how you meet it.

But, if the advert doesn’t include a list of skills and requirements, you will need to do a little more detective work:

  • What services does the salon offer?
  • Do they serve a specific type of clientele?
  • What skills are important in every salon?

With some careful thought, you can easily tailor your cover letter to perfectly for the job you are applying for.

And don’t be put off if you have no professional experience in a salon . You will have gained lots of transferrable skills at cosmetology school and in previous jobs. And you can even draw on your personal life if necessary.

Next, think of some examples of how you’ve demonstrated the skills they are looking for.

You see, it’s not always enough to tell your potential employer that you have fantastic customer service skills: you need to show them that you understand what makes good service.

So, instead of writing:

‘I have good customer service skills’

Say something like:

‘I have fantastic customer service skills which I was able to demonstrate during my time at school.  For example, as part of my program, we had the opportunity to style real clients’ hair. When I was with a client, I was friendly, professional, and ensured that they were comfortable at all times. Because of this, I regularly received positive feedback from both clients and my supervisor.’

Remember to be positive:

If you don’t sound confident in your abilities, your prospective employer is unlikely to be impressed.

Why should they believe in you, if you don’t believe in yourself?

It’s hard, I get it. This is your first job out of school… But don’t downplay your talents. Tell the recruiter what you do well, and don’t dwell on areas that you’re less confident in.

Remember, there will be lots of time to develop once you’re in your dream job.

Include any details specifically asked for in the job advert:

Sometimes, employers will ask you to state your availability or confirm the dates you are available for interview in your cover letter.

If you forget to do this, it shows the employer that you’re not great at following instructions. So, double-check that you have answered any questions, and included any requested details before you submit your application.

And don’t forget to proofread!

Typos are annoying. You think you’ve written something great, but when you read back through your work, you notice lots of little mistakes.

To avoid embarrassment, take the time to proofread your work.

But proofreading our own writing isn’t always enough. So, to catch any mistakes you might not have noticed, have a friend or family member do a final check before you hit send.

How do you format the ideal entry-level cover letter?

OK, so you know what you need to include in your cover letter. And you know how to sell yourself.

But, not everyone knows how to format a cover letter. That’s OK, it’s easy once you get the hang of it!

So, the first thing to remember is that a cover letter is a professional letter.

That means that you should start by putting your contact details in the top right corner like this:

A. Cosmo Tologist

44 Awesome Street

Salon town, XX 44444

Then, you should list the date and the salon’s address below on the left:

Today’s date

Employer’s name

Employer’s title

Salon’s name

Salon’s address

Now it’s time for the greeting. Keep it professional with:

 ‘Dear Mr/Mrs/Ms’ and their surname.

But, make sure you get the pronoun right! You don’t want to inadvertently offend anyone. So, if you aren’t sure whether your prospective employer identifies as male or female, stay safe by writing:

Dear ‘First Name’ ‘Last Name’ ,

Now it’s time to introduce yourself and tell the reader what position you are applying for. For example:

I am writing in response to the advert placed in (insert job board here). As a fully qualified and passionate cosmetologist, I believe I will be a great fit for your team.

Next, briefly tell the employer why you would like to work in their salon. For example, you could write:

When researching (salon name), I was incredibly impressed by your (insert something you like about their work), and I believe that my values align well with your own.

Next, it’s time for a paragraph or two about you. What relevant experience do you have, and how do you meet the requirements for the role?

For example, you could write something like:

I recently graduated from (insert your school), where I trained in (list accomplishments here). If successful, I believe that these skills will be incredibly useful whilst working at (insert salon name). During my studies, I regularly received positive feedback about my (insert specific skills here).

And don’t forget to include examples of how you’ve demonstrated the skills they’re looking for!

Then, answer any questions asked in the job advert:

I am available every day, except on Mondays.

Next, include a call for action:

Thank you for taking the time to consider my application. I have enclosed my resume and look forward to hearing from you soon.

And finally, sign off professionally:

Sincerely, Your full name

So, there you have it. You’re all set to write the ideal entry-level cosmetology cover letter.

How to Write a Perfect Cosmetology Resume (Examples Included)

cosmetologist-resume

someone once said “the clothes make the man,” but whoever that person was, he or she must not have had a great haircut. or facial. if you have had such an experience, then you know how much better and more confident you feel after a good appointment with your friendly local cosmetologist, who can help you make exactly the tweaks you need to make yourself shine. if you’re one of these skilled professionals yourself, think of your resume revamp as a makeover: taking what you’ve already got, and putting some gel and maybe a good moisturizer on it to take it to the next level.

if you’re an aspiring cosmetologist or one who already knows the ropes, the key to your next great opportunity is your resume. as you start to think about how to construct your best resume, let’s look at three cosmetologists on slightly different paths: one just starting out, one hair stylist, and an esthetician.

first up is ginny, who’s just starting out in the cosmetology field.

cosmetologist-resume-entry-level

until recently, ginny was a student, gathering experience while she completed her certificate and got her cosmetology license. so while she hasn’t been a full-fledged stylist yet, she works the experience she does have. it’s likely that life as a salon assistant and an apprentice stylist involved a lot of learning-the-ropes work, but ginny is careful to emphasize the skills and qualities she knows will benefit her as a full-time stylist. she also leads with the version of herself that she wants the reader to see: that she’s licensed, that she’s focused on customer service, and that she’s a good hairstylist.

for her experience, ginny provides quick summaries of each to provide context for her work, and lets the reader know how it relates to the job she wants. ginny has the option of including all jobs she’s had, to show a work history, but in this resume she really wants to focus on her salon-based qualifications and training. if she were to include, say, her job at the gap or her summer serving burgers, it’s important to make sure that the bullets shown are skills that the reader could associate with the job description.

ginny has done a good job in tailoring her resume specifically for the open position at fab cuts, so it’s important to make sure that focus keeps up throughout the resume. (and it’s doubly important to double-check your resume to make sure you’re not sending the fab cuts objective to super styles job opening as well. as always, proofread the heck out of any resume you send!)

next up is michael, who’s a hairstylist like ginny, but is considerably further down the path.

cosmetology-resume-experienced-hair-stylist

the first word you see in the body of michael’s resume is “experienced.” that’s the note he wants to hit most with his resume, so the more traditional reverse-chronological format works well for him. he also has an element of “show, don’t tell” going on here: he gives an instagram address that shows off his repertoire of styles, and in his headline summary statement he mentions specific feedback on yelp, which the reader can then verify. if you’re going to include social media on your resume, make sure you do it in a very controlled, relevant way. here, it works because michael is trying to show the visual component of the creativity and style he tries to emphasize throughout. ideally, he’s curated his instagram account so that it’s a consistent, professional account of his achievements.

he also emphasizes his customer focus, so he makes sure that bullets under each of his jobs talk about his experience talking with clients about what they want and need in a hairstyle.

next we have Janine, who’s taken a different path in the cosmetology field: rather than a hair stylist, she’s an esthetician.

cosmetology-resume-esthetician

like michael, janine is experienced in her field, and wants her resume to reflect that. but before she jumps into her experience, janine has a robust professional summary that offers detailed bullets that frame her narrative. this sets the tone for the points she wants to hit in the rest of her resume, such as her focus on client needs and health. this is a theme that carries through each of her jobs and their respective bullet points. janine keeps that narrative theme going by offering brief one-liner about each of her jobs. if you opt to do this, you’re giving a little more context to your bullet points. for example, if you worked in a small mom-and-pop operation, you can emphasize that you worked in an independent salon. if you worked in a hectic place with lots of traffic, that’s the kind of information you can put in these statements as well—just remember to keep it brief…and professional!

You’re up to date with the latest style trends. You’re the person your friends seek out to help decide if a new hairstyle will work for them.

You’re a talented cosmetologist, so you shouldn’t also need to be an expert at  writing resumes . It can sometimes be tricky to talk about your experience in a way that demonstrates all you know.

These cosmetology resume examples use best resume practices and  have been used in the real world to land jobs at top salons in 2024.

Why this resume works

  • A quick way to do this is to include the name of the company you’re applying to.
  • It also helps to read the job description and list any important keywords.
  • Nearly all cosmetologists need a license. Licenses are generally valid within a single state, so list the state where you’re certified.
  • Beauty schools offer various programs (like cosmetology, nail technician, and makeup) with select requirements. Generally, programs last for one year of full-time training, about 1,000 hours.

Cosmetology Instructor Resume

  • If you don’t have direct experience, mention any past instances when you guided your team or increased customer satisfaction with personalized service. However, if you have any experience interacting with students and improving their learning progress, don’t let it go unnoticed!

Cosmetology Student Resume

Cosmetology student resume example with 2+ years of training experience

  • Be sure to include only relevant activities and those related to your profession (like volunteering at Wigs for Kids) or those that demonstrate leadership.
  • You could also be hired as a cosmetologist after certification if you work hard.
  • Early in your career, it’s okay to mention roles outside of cosmetology in your “Work Experience” section.

Lash Tech Resume

Lash tech resume example with 9 years of experience

  • List as many extensions as you’ve completed in the past for customers to showcase your abilities in the field. Also, adding extra skills like creating bookings, using the best products, and providing personalized services will boost your chances of getting hired!

Hairstylist Resume

Hairstylist resume example with 3+ years of experience

  • Start each bullet point with a strong action word (like “Operated” and “Developed”).
  • Use numbers to quantify your impact. For example, tying the cancellation follow-up program to a hard number of new customers each month immediately shows a positive monetary impact on the salon.
  • If you have expertise in a certain line of styling products, mention that. This is usually optional, but if the job description you’re applying to mentions a specific product you have experience with, you should include it.

Beautician Resume

Beautician resume example with 5 years of experience

  • If you want to work with the elderly, senior living facilities hire full-time and part-time beauticians to help their residents live in style.
  • A common question for beauticians is whether to include high school in their beautician resume “Education” section. Err on the side of having it unless you’re pressed for space (try to ensure your resume fits on a single page). Some jobs require high school or a GED, and it never hurts to remove doubt.

Nail Technician Resume

Nail technician resume example with 7 years of experience

  • For example, were you responsible for onboarding and training new hires? As you progress with your career, showing increasing responsibility is a surefire sign of growth.
  • Your  resume skills  section should include just enough to show your specific technical strengths while not looking like a laundry list of all skills under the sun. If you have experience with particular product lines, include one or two.
  • Nail technician certification is different than cosmetology certification in most states (though both are programs offered by most beauty schools), so be sure to list the exact name of the accreditation you possess.

Your Cosmetology Resume Format

Computer screen under construction depicting formatting a cosmetology resume

Writing the perfect resume takes a lot of practice. Even with ample experience and extensive qualifications, your cosmetology resume could be skipped over altogether because it wasn’t properly formatted. No matter the type of job you’re applying for, getting the resume format right is essential to ensure that your resume is readable and has a logical flow.

A few important considerations to think about when formatting your resume include:

  • Reverse-chronological format, functional format, and combination/hybrid format
  • Contact info and header
  • ATS and readability

Reverse-chronological, functional, and combination/hybrid formats

Popular resume formats for 2024

  • Reverse-chronological format : This format displays employment history beginning with your most recent job. Because your latest position is highlighted first, employers can quickly understand how your career has progressed.
  • Functional format : The functional resume format highlights transferable experience and skills instead of focusing on chronological history. If you are changing careers or have a lengthy gap in your employment history, this format may be right.
  • Combination/hybrid format : This type of resume format combines the most notable elements of a chronological and functional format to ensure that the recruiter’s attention is drawn to the relevant information in the resume. Like the functional format, skills are listed at the top of the resume. Work history is also listed in date order, the same as the chronological format.

While the three resume formats above can help you create an effective resume, the reverse-chronological format is the best option for cosmetology. There are many reasons why this type of format is ideal for a cosmetology resume. The reverse-chronological format is considered the most popular format among recruiters and employers.

The format allows you to link your employment dates effortlessly, showing employers you have a strong work ethic. The amount of experience you have will tell employers that you’re a specialist in the cosmetology field. Your latest job is displayed first because of how this format works, which highlights an upward trajectory for your career.

Your cosmetology resume contact information

The most important information to add to your cosmetology resume involves the header and contact information, which should be positioned toward the top-center or top-left areas of your resume template . Your name should have the largest font. The remainder of your contact information should have a font size of 11-12.

As for fonts, Times New Roman and Helvetica are good options when creating a resume that you want to be effective. Tahoma and Calibri are a couple of additional font styles that are perfectly readable.

At the very least, don’t use an ornate font that’s difficult to read. If your potential employer can’t read your resume because of the font style, it won’t be considered. The information that should be incorporated into a header includes your:

  • Job position
  • Email address
  • Phone number
  • Optional LinkedIn, portfolio site, etc.

Your contact information could look something like this:

There are a million ways you could format your contact info, and browsing our  resume examples  will give you some more inspiration.

Will your cosmetology resume pass through ATS?

In recent years, an increasing percentage of businesses have begun to use ATS software to collect, sort, and rank job applications and resumes. Today, nearly all Fortune 500 companies use this software to ensure their recruitment process is more streamlined and efficient.

ATS stands for applicant tracking system. This software looks for certain things when scanning through resumes, which you should know if you want your resume to be considered. The main considerations to think about when it comes to the ATS include:

  • Margins : Aim for about an inch on each side, but decrease as needed
  • Fonts : Generic fonts are best, such as Times New Roman and Arial
  • Font sizes : 10-14-point, depending on sections and body content
  • Header names : Keep it simple. Don’t rename “Skills” to “My Best Features” because ATS won’t know what that means
  • Skills : Speaking of skills, place them in short phrases, maybe even using bullet points, some of which should match job description keywords
  • Logical order : The logical order for an ATS-friendly resume is the header, contact info, objective/statement, work experience, skills, and education
  • One page : The most ATS-friendly resumes are a single full-page

If you find it difficult to understand how to format your resume, our  resume builder  will automatically ensure your cosmetology resume is formatted for success.

Writing Your Cosmetology Resume

While  writing a resume  isn’t on your top list of fun things, you can easily avoid the frustration that usually occurs when writing a cosmetology resume using our  resume-building tool . Our guide breaks it down for you into seven distinct sections, which include:

  • The mysterious objective/summary statement
  • Work experience
  • Top cosmetology skills
  • Education and certifications
  • Projects, interests, and hobbies

Customizing your cosmetology resume

  • Editing and proofreading

Do you need an objective/summary in your cosmetology resume?

No. You really don’t! Not what you thought we were gonna say? Stick with us because we’ll show you why you might want to include one and when you should forget about it. First, you should understand the difference between an objective and a summary.

As for a summary, this is—well, a summary—that discusses your qualifications and why you believe you’d be a good fit for the position based on your experience and skills. An objective is a short statement that describes your career goals. Even though these statements shouldn’t be incorporated into every resume, you could think about using them when:

Objective statement : You can use an objective statement in your resume when your long-term career goals correlate with the cosmetology position you seek. Suppose you’ve spent your life as a nurse, for example, but decide to transition into cutting hair. In that case, the objective is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate why you’re still qualified for the position.

Summary : Write a summary to display your value as an employer, emphasize core strengths, and tie together your years of experience in different roles.

There are also times when you should leave these statements out altogether. Likely, the objective or summary will repeat what’s already clear in your resume. If you don’t believe your objective or summary is specific and adds value to your resume, cut it.

Additionally, summaries shouldn’t be used if you don’t already have a substantial amount of experience. Let’s look at a few examples to help you determine whether your objective or summary is hindering or helping you.

Poor Examples

Objective: To earn a position as a cosmetologist with a high salary.

Summary: Skilled professional with more than 10 years as a cosmetologist, where I have served many happy customers over the years.

The above objective is bad because it’s vague and isn’t necessarily an inspiring goal to work toward, especially not in the eyes of a recruiter. The point of an objective is to show employers you have a vision for your career (beyond profit).

As for the summary, it doesn’t work because that information could easily be understood from a simple glance through the resume. You should also be more descriptive when writing a summary.

Better Examples

Objective: Customer-focused cosmetologist who wants to help customers feel their best while growing the clientele base at Scissors Salon. Motivated to improve my styling skills and learn more about the cosmetology industry from seasoned stylists.

Summary:  Licensed cosmetologist with over 10 years of experience in styling, makeup application, and cutting. Have maintained a customer satisfaction rate of just over 98% with a loyal customer base of more than 300. Ready to be part of a thriving cosmetology practice at Styled Locks, bringing my customer base and building new relationships and trust with luxe clients.

The above example of the  objective statement and resume summary  succeed because they’re direct, to the point, and relevant. The objective statement tells the employer what you want to achieve by working at their salon. The summary focuses on your skills and highlights your experience.

Writing your cosmetology work experience

Your work experience is the most important information you’ll need to include in your cosmetology resume. The ideal number of job experiences to fit in a cosmetology resume is around two to four.

If you’ve had eight jobs since you were 16 years old, you don’t need to include information about the earliest ones. When you have substantial amounts of experience, include the most relevant jobs to the position to which you’re applying.

Cometology work experience bullet points

Every job experience you include should be written in short yet descriptive bullet points. Ensure you have active verbs and language in your bullet points, which will help you avoid writing vague sentences that don’t get your point across. Examples of active verbs include:

  • Administered

You should also avoid personal pronouns like “I” and “me.” Use standard sentence punctuation at the end of each bullet point OR leave periods out altogether. Either or is fine; just be consistent. These are poor bullet points we don’t want to see on your cosmetology resume:

  • I worked at a hair salon
  • Received calls from customers
  • Styled and cut hair.

These bullet points are far too short and vague while not providing enough details about your work experience. They also do not demonstrate consistency with punctuation. Three examples of strong bullet points for a cosmetology resume include:

  • Performed cosmetic services like pedicures, manicures, skincare, and hairstyling for 10+ clients per day
  • Performed over 12 chemical hair treatments each week, and documented client preferences to refer to for repeat customers
  • Maintained product inventory and ordered supply refreshes at the salon bi-weekly

These bullet points succeed because they include consistent punctuation and offer rich details about your work experience. Based on these bullet points, potential employers can better understand what kind of employee you’d be.

Numbers speak louder than words on your cosmetology resume

Your resume must stand out when a recruiter looks through a stack of potential candidates. A simple and effective way to enhance your work experience bullet points is by quantifying the impact you’ve had at previous jobs.

In today’s job market, it’s not enough to list your experience if the information can’t be measured. Metrics provide employers with data to determine how valuable you’d be as an employee. Let these job description bullet points serve as a starting place for your unique accomplishments as a cosmetologist:

Best cosmetology skills to include

Even though your work experience is the most important element of a resume, the skills you choose to highlight can also pay dividends when applying for a cosmetology job. When you’re trying to identify the most important skills to write down, keep in mind that there are  hard skills and soft skills  to consider.

Hard skills are measurable skills that are easy to define and highly specific to the position to which you’re applying. Soft skills are inherently more difficult to measure and can be readily applied to almost any role in the job market. Examples of hard skills that are specific to cosmetology include:

  • Hair coloring
  • Hairstyling
  • Chemical relaxing
  • Tinting and dyeing

Some soft skills you can add to your cosmetology resume include:

  • Decision-making and problem-solving
  • Communication
  • Punctuality
  • Adaptability
  • Attention to detail

Make sure you search for keywords in the job description you’re looking at. A standard cosmetologist job ad could include keywords like “hairstyling,” “facial treatments,” and “anticipating needs.”

Some of the skills you have should correlate with the keywords you identify. You can include around 5-10 skills in a basic cosmetology resume, but make sure you honestly portray yourself.

Education and certifications for a cosmetologist

Obtaining a job in the cosmetology industry requires education and training. Along with a high school diploma or GED, you should also look into earning a cosmetology training certificate or an associate’s degree in cosmetology. An associate’s degree or equivalent program takes around two full years.

The required number of years in the workforce depends on the position to which you’re applying. While entry-level positions can be obtained without any experience in the industry, unique roles like skincare specialists may require two or more years of experience in a spa or salon.

perfect cover letter for cosmetologist

Should I add projects, interests, or hobbies to my cosmetologist resume?

Even though most resumes don’t include projects, interests, or hobbies , some situations call for these additions. Depending on the company and your experience level, these additions could strengthen your resume. For instance, projects are great for college and high school students and anyone applying for an entry-level position.

It can be difficult to fill out a resume if you’re fresh out of high school or college and don’t yet have cosmetology experience. Including projects, interests, and hobbies can bolster your resume with relevant information about yourself that the employer could find useful. A couple of examples of interests and hobbies could be:

  • Community service
  • Graphic design

Two examples of projects you could incorporate into your cosmetology resume include:

  • Maintained a blog
  • Designed an eCommerce website with JavaScript and Python that averages 2,000 hits per month

If you choose to include projects or interests, be sure to think about how you can discuss its relevance to cosmetology in an interview. For instance, if you’ve designed a website with JavaScript for the first time, you can discuss how that experience has taught you patience through the process, a skill you’ll need when dealing with people day in and day out.

perfect cover letter for cosmetologist

Before sending out resumes and getting excited about your next cosmetology position, don’t forget to tailor your resume. Don’t make the mistake of sending the same resume to every recruiter. Employers know whether they’re looking at a specified, custom document or a generic piece of paper.

If you want a prospective employer to believe you’re serious about your application, include position-specific information within the objective/summary, skills, and bullet point sections.

perfect cover letter for cosmetologist

Edit and proofread your cosmetology resume

Even though this should be the easiest aspect of  writing a resume , it’s also the most overlooked. If you don’t correct typos, poor punctuation, and bad grammar in your resume, your prospective employer will almost certainly believe you’re inattentive and don’t care about the job. You’ll essentially be providing employers with a bad first impression.

Along with proofreading your resume on your own, have your friends or family members take a look at your work. Take advantage of our  free resume checker  to check for consistency, active voice, active verbs, metrics, and more.

Resume Objective & Resume Summary

If you think there is no real difference between a cosmetologist resume objective and summary (or don’t know what those are at all), you definitely need us. Those are one of the first things a recruiter sees on cosmetology resumes. So it’s important that you know how to communicate that you have the required certification, possess all important cosmetologist skills, and are ready to cater to every customer. It’s the first step toward your job search success!

Resume Summary [Examples]

If you leaf through a few resume examples for cosmetologist, you’ll see that some of them include a short intro that summarizes the work the applicant has done so far, their beauty experience, and key job accomplishments. Follow our right resume sample for the resume summary section. It’ll help you find success in the job market!

A passionate skilled cosmetologist with professional experience and accolades. This one’s way way too vague.

A licensed cosmetologist with 5+ years of professional experience performing the entire spectrum of cosmetic procedures, hair treatment and styling, and makeup application. A CSAT score of 93%.

Resume Objectives [Examples]

Some people who apply for jobs prefer to follow a resume example with an objective at the beginning. Instead of summarizing our experience the way a resume summary does, a cosmetologist resume objective communicates what your professional goal is. Show interview-winning confidence!

To obtain a position as a skincare consultant.

Seeking to take on the role of a full-time skincare consultant at a licensed salon to use my professional cosmetology and hair treatment experience and skills to increase customer loyalty and contribute to the success of my employer.

Resume Examples [Experience]

No sample resumes for cosmetologist would be complete without the experience section. It is supposed to highlight your duties in previous relevant positions and show that your professional background matches the job requirements. It’s perhaps the most important part of any beauty industry resume, which is why we encourage you to follow our well-written cosmetologist sample resume for advice on the experience section.

The information you put about your professional experience should be short yet specific. If you’ve only had one or two employers so far, no problem! But describe your work responsibilities and achievements in a way that puts you in the best light. Use bullet points and list your past jobs, starting from the most recent ones.

Entry Level Cosmetologist Resume [Experience]

If you have virtually no professional experiences so far, don’t worry! There are a lot of cosmetologist resume samples just out of school. As long as they highlight your knowledge of the job responsibilities and list your achievements (even education-related ones), you’re good.

If you look at cosmetology resume samples for entry-level positions, you’ll see that there’s a way to appear competent even with no or almost no work experience. Focus on the projects you’ve completed during your training, list your skills—and you’re all set.

Entry Level Cosmetologist [Sample]

For a recruiter to meet your beginner cosmetology resume with acceptance and open job opportunities to you, follow our guidelines for an entry-level resume cosmetologist experience section.

Skills on a Resume for a Cosmetologist

The cosmetologist resume skills section is one of the most crucial parts of your resume. It should include not only the competencies in your career field (meaning cosmetologist skills) and accomplishments in beauty treatments but also relevant interpersonal and business skills.

Here are a few cosmetologist skills that individuals looking to hire you expect to see on your beauty industry resume:

How to Make Recruiters Notice Your Resume

One of the cosmetologist resume sections that job seekers often forget about is “Other.” But it’s actually among the resume sections that help your resume stand out. Here, you should list your extra skills and competencies that make you better than other candidates. For example, if you have extensive knowledge of acne treatments or even aromatherapy, make sure to write about it. As long as these competencies are at least somewhat relevant for a cosmetologist, they might convince your dream employer to invite you for an interview and, hopefully, recruit you.

Cosmetologist Resume Examples [Other Sections]

Even the “Other” section on a professional cosmetologist resume should be relevant and show that no one can work like you. Otherwise, we wouldn’t even include it in our cosmetology resume samples. The right “Other” section can even affect your future salary, so don’t treat it as an afterthought.

  • A responsible dog owner and experienced groomer
  • Ability to format and scan documentation
  • Knowledge of massage techniques, including head massage for hair growth
  • Certification in music therapy and the ability to use the knowledge gained to create the perfect ambiance in the beauty salon

Cosmetologist Resume Keywords

Consciously or unconsciously, most recruiters and hiring managers react positively to action words on a cosmetologist resume (or a resume for any other career field). These verbs communicate that you’re a doer and are ready to complete all the tasks given to you. Also, they sometimes help resumes pass applicant tracking systems (ATS), which is very important, considering what a big role technology plays in recruitment these days.

Communicate

Those are some of the key action verbs to put on a resume for beautician if you want your dream employer to hire you. Don’t forget about them—they can boost your career! Everyone is looking for a doer, so show recruiters that you’re one.

Key Things to Remember

A former Amazon recruiter says one of the biggest mistakes job seekers make is putting Miss America-style statements in résumés

  • An ex-Amazon recruiter says a key mistake job candidates make is writing vague statements in résumés.
  • She compares these to "Miss America answers" that don't highlight specific achievements.
  • It's best to quantify your achievements, she said.

Insider Today

A former Amazon recruiter says there’s one mistake that she keeps seeing both junior and senior employees making in their résumés: writing vague statements.

Lindsay Mustain — a former Comcast and Amazon recruiter and now CEO of Talent Paradigm — compared these statements to what she’d imagine hearing at a Miss America pageant in a recent interview with CNBC Make It .

It’s a simple response describing what you do in your role without highlighting your accomplishments, she said — using: "I had stakeholder meetings with people," as an example.

Mustain says those types of answers make a résumé look "like a glorified job description," adding that it’s not just junior employees but C-suite execs who are also guilty of this.

Instead, she suggests quantifying your accomplishments, so you have numbers to back up how you helped a company move forward.

The "more metrics and analytics you can add to your résumé, the more impressive," she said.

Recruiters often deal with tens of thousands of applicants, so a results-based résumé is more effective as the reviewers quickly get a sense of how much value you added to a role, she said.

Eugene Hayden, who has worked at companies like Google, KPMG, and the Boston Consulting Group, previously reviewed over 800 résumés to help people in his network who were negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The most common mistake he found in the résumés he reviewed was a lack of quantifiable achievements, with 86% of résumés having this issue, he said.

"Hiring managers and recruiters are looking for people who perfectly fit the role and are able to achieve goals and evaluate their personal impact.

The best résumé is the one that shows how you are perfectly qualified for the job to which you are applying,” he previously wrote for Business Insider.
