5 Alternative Uses of Microsoft PowerPoint (Because it’s Not Just for Presentations!)

When you hear the word PowerPoint , you likely think of one thing: presentations. Yep, the tool is most commonly used for giving an audience something to fix their eyeballs on (in hopes that your slides distract them from the fact that you’re sweating profusely).

But, throw everything you thought you knew about PowerPoint out the window. Believe it or not, it can be used for far more than just bullet points, stock photos, and sending your words whooshing across the screen.

In fact, there are plenty of non-presentation-related things that you can create using PowerPoint. Like what? Well, here are a few ideas for inspiration.

1. Infographics

Infographics are a great way to share a bunch of information in a really digestible format. Plus, they’re just plain cool to look at.

If you don’t have a single design bone in your body, you might think that pulling together your own infographic just isn’t in your cards. But, using PowerPoint’s SmartArt feature , this task really isn’t all that challenging. Believe it or not, this interactive infographic was created entirely in PowerPoint (although, fair warning, something this advanced will take a little more elbow grease!).

You’ll want to start by resizing your slide. Head to the “Design” tab and click on “Slide Size.” Choose the custom option, and then enter your desired dimensions.

Next, click “Insert” and “SmartArt.” From pyramids to hierarchies, you’ll be presented with a bunch of different layouts you could use for your infographic. Select the one that works best for you, and then start creating and customizing!

Everybody loves a good GIF. But, they aren’t just for funny clips from your favorite reality shows. By using a series of slides to create your own custom GIF, they can also serve a purpose in business.

So, how can you create a GIF yourself using your PowerPoint slides?

To start, you need to convert your PowerPoint slides to a Graphics Interchange Format (that’s what GIF stands for—thank me when you ace your next trivia night!). Don’t worry, it’s not complicated. You just need to follow these simple instructions .

Once all of your slides are converted, you’re ready to start creating your own GIF using your separate slides as the images. Fortunately, there are plenty of websites that make this easy, including:

  • makeagif.com
  • recordIt.co  (Great for creating screencasts if necessary!)
  • gifmaker.me

Follow the instructions on the website to use your individual slides to create your GIF, and you’ll have your own custom one in no time!

3. Engaging overviews

Have you heard of Prezi? It’s a tool that offers a really engaging way to provide an overview of a topic, as you’re able to start with a big picture and then zoom in and out on select pieces to get more specific information. It looks a little something like this:

But, guess what? If you have a newer version of PowerPoint, you can do this very same thing within that tool!

With PowerPoint’s new Morph feature , you can create similar animations that make it much easier to break down complex topics (anything from new employee onboarding training to a sales presentation!) into smaller pieces. To use this, you simply need to duplicate a slide, move objects to their next position, and then select the Morph animation. PowerPoint will automatically fill in the frames and make you look like a straight up pro!

4. Photo albums

Whether you want to showcase pictures of your dog (guilty as charged) or pull together a collection of product photos to share with your company’s clients, PowerPoint makes it easy to put together a photo album.

Don’t believe me? Here’s a glimpse at a simple one that I created for my dog (don’t judge me) with almost no effort:

The exact method you use to do this will vary based on your specific version of PowerPoint. In older versions, you just click “Insert” and then “Photo Album.” In others, you can select “File” and then “ New From Template .” In the template chooser, search for the term “photo album”, select the layout you like best, and then start inserting your images!

When you’re done, save it in your desired format—or even print your slides on photo paper!—and you’ll have a professional looking photo album to use to showcase whatever you need to (or, you know, to forever cherish your dog).

Want something extra creative and engaging? Why not create a quiz in PowerPoint? It’s way easier than you think! As a matter of fact, I did this simple one myself in about two minutes:

So, how do you do it?

You just need two text boxes: One for your question, and one for your answer. When you have both written on your slide, click the text box that contains your answer. With that text box selected, visit the “Animations” tab and then select “Appear Animation”. From there you can adjust how you’d like your animation to appear—which I did using a click trigger.

That way, when your slide pops up, only the question will be visible until you click to make the answer appear!

Of course, this is a basic example. But, after you play around for some time and get comfortable, you’ll have the know-how to build even more complex quizzes to keep people engaged.

Out with the bullets, in with the awesome

Think PowerPoint is just for straightforward presentations? Think again. As it turns out, there are plenty of alternative and creative uses for that handy tool.

Play around with these options and see what you come up with. Chances are, you’ll end up with a lot more than just boring ol’ bullets and clip art.

We believe that it’s always important to show the good examples out there and follow their lead. We admit it, it was pretty hard to dig out the good PowerPoint presentation examples from the mass. We’ve added our opinion on each piece and why we believe it’s worthy of being included in this collection. Let’s begin!

1. The Sketchnote Mini-Workshop by Mike Rohde

An eye-catchy PowerPoint presentation example whose content is fully hand-written. What we love about this design, is the high personalization level that is achieved via handwriting. It almost feels like the author is drawing and writing in front of the viewers’ eyes. A digital presentation that conveys a physical feeling.

2. 10 Ways to Spread The Love in The Office by Elodie A.

The following presentation is a real eye candy. We can’t help it, the cartoon style lives in our hearts. An incredibly appealing PowerPoint presentation that brings positive vibes and a good mood through vibrant cartoon illustrations. It gets bonus points for the usage of bullet points and little text.

3. The Great State of Design with CSS Grid Layout and Friends by Stacy Kvernmo

A presentation that tells a story is always a good example that everyone should follow. This PowerPoint presentation has a lot of slides that tell different mini-stories. The way they are depicted is really engaging – they almost look like a sequence of frames that make up a video. This technique really nails the viewers’ attention.

The overall feeling is of futuristic design. Moreover, they used the color of 2018 – Ultra Violet for their color scheme. Maybe, they did predict the future after all.

Who doesn’t like to see a familiar face? We know your audience does! It’s proven that if you show a familiar face to your viewers, you nail their attention and boost their engagement level. This is the technique used in the following PowePoint presentation. Moreover, the inner slides of the presentation are also cartoons with big conceptual illustrations and little text. The formula for a really good presentation.

7. How to Successfully Run a Remote Team from Weekdone.com

We haven’t really seen many PowerPoint presentation examples with top-view illustrations. The following presentation really reminded us that when presenting to an audience, you should always think: How to make your design stand out from the rest? Well, this one really caught our eye. In addition, we love the bright colors, geometric shapes, and overall flat feeling, all of which are among the graphic design trends for 2022 .

8. SXSW 2018 – Top Trends by Matteo Sarzana

People love visuals and this is an undeniable fact. The whole PowerPoint presentation is built on high-quality photos, each including a little tagline in the middle. We love the consistency, we love the factor of surprise, and we love the high engagement level this presentation creates. Just make sure to back up such presentation type with a good speech!

9. How to study effectively? by sadraus

Semi-transparent overlays, geometric shapes, a video inside… Everything about this PowerPoint presentation screams “modern”. The grayscale coloring is accompanied by a fresh green color accent. The choice of images clearly suggests that the target audience is young people. The overall feeling that we get from this PowerPoint presentation – is youthful and modern.

Time sure flies in a blink of an eye. It's been 32 years since PowerPoint came into existence after being acquired by Microsoft, and since then, it is known as the ultimate transformation tool. Before the original and the most loved Microsoft Office suite introduced this magnificent presentation tool to what is now the ‘de facto’ of the billions of presenters, curating presentations was expensive and hands down the most tedious task one can get himself into. 

In the late ’80s, PowerPoint remodeled itself. For the first time, anyone having a personal computer could get a hold of this software: crafting and curating everything under the sun! Since then, its ability to bring in captivating presentations is a life-altering skill possessed by 70% and probably more American employees. 

By the time 2000s rolled around- a promising era had begun with new kids on the presentation block, ready to dethrone the ye olde campion; PowerPoint. In response to immense opportunity and exploding market demand, Apple’s Keynote (2003) and Google Slides (2007) entered the online realm, proving themselves to be true competitors.

This is an age-old decision that every presenter, no matter his skill level, should make. To assess, let us dismantle and study each industry leader: PowerPoint vs. Google Slides vs. Keynote , piece by piece, brick by brick.

A quick overview: PowerPoint 

PowerPoint is such a ubiquitous tool that almost everybody has heard of it. From business to academics to the corporate world, it has conquered every arena, becoming the de facto leader of presentation software for decades. In fact, for many people, PowerPoint and word presentations are synonymous with each other. Its interface is so familiar that it remains a cult favorite to date. 

Additionally, PowerPoint is a part of every office product available on both IOS and Android, making it even harder to avoid it. It can be included in every other office pursuit and does everything that you would expect a presentation software to do; add text, media, add any number of slides to accompany a talk or other presentations. You name it, and PowerPoint has it! Even a novice can work with PowerPoint without any essential training as it is easy to work with. 

Overall it is hard to go wrong with and not become a firm member of the ever so popular PowerPoint clan!

A quick overview: Keynote 

Keynote is essentially the Apple version of PowerPoint, native to Apple products and users only. It is part of the iWord productivity suite enabling you to design sleek and streamlined presentations.

This is a tricky parameter to base one’s judgment. When it comes to online and offline accessibility, every software has its perks. There are so many ways to access all these software, making it confusing for the average user. 

Online Access- Google Slides, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Keynotes all the software perform well on various online platforms. Having said that, they have their own integration services to carry on the process.

Offline Access- There is no denying the fact that PowerPoint with its robust offline apps is the best software out there. Its UI is specially prepared to meet the offline requirements of the user, hence it is a go-to tool when it comes to preparing an offline presentation. While Google Slides and Keynotes are trying to catch up with this offline beast, it is very safe to say that none of them have succeeded as of now. 

Verdict- It is hard to imagine any other presentation app that is far more equipped than PowerPoint. While it may not necessarily be mobile-friendly, there is no denying that it provides a seamless experience to its users online and offline. As for the Google Slides and Keynotes, they are still grooming themselves and have a lot of catching up to do. Google Slides still lags behind in providing a reliable desktop app without getting too jittery. 

2. SPECIAL EFFECTS 

Google Slides offer pretty basic and beginner-friendly animation options which are quite less when compared to its rival PowerPoint with its cutting edge features. If creativity is what you preach then nothing can be more enchanting than the PowerPoint interface. With hundreds of options to choose from an advanced software like PowerPoint will certainly never prove to be a disappointment. Although its graphic creation is nothing in comparison to Photoshop, PowerPoint can handle basic graphic creation with aplomb. 

Additionally, one can use PowerPoint to remove the background image, crop, and reshape and even create great social media graphic content that is loved by many. 

Verdict-  PowerPoint is essentially the jack of all trades in the presentation block. It can perform some impossible actions which might seem somewhat extra, but according to us, they are liable in making your presentation noteworthy. 

3. CROSS-PLATFORM COMPATIBILITY

Compatibility is one of the major reasons why a lot of software don’t make it to the final cut. Prime examples of these are Prezi and as far as Keynote goes, it should not be even considered as Apple seems to be obsessed with the bliss of its one hardware and OS. Let see who wins this one! 

PowerPoint has apps on Windows, Android, iOS, Windows Phone, and many online accessibility options via the standard Browser. PowerPoint arguably has the worst reputation when it comes to pricing whereas Keynote and Google Slides are absolutely free of cost, making the verdict pretty straightforward. 

Final Closure- Without dwelling into the convoluted Office pricing mechanism we declare Google Slides and Keynote as winners here. However, when we look at the extensive professional gallery PowerPoint has to offer, who cares about shelling a few extra from one’s pocket right? How to Name Slides in PowerPoint [A Step-by-Step Guide!]

Giving a name to a slide in PowerPoint is one of those things that will not make or break your presentation. However, naming slides in PowerPoint can be really helpful in streamlining your process of presentation design and it will optimize things for you!

To name slides in PowerPoint, click on the “View” tab in PowerPoint. Then, click on the “Outline View” option from the ribbon. Now, in the slide preview section, click on the slide to add the name and start typing. This will add a title name to the slide.

In this article, we shall do a deep-dive in naming slides in PowerPoint. I’ll also share with you a trick wherein you can name all slides together. Plus, we shall also take a look at how naming a slide is different from naming a slide layout!

So, let’s get started!

1. Why Do You Need to Name Slides in PowerPoint?

Let’s begin with the basics. You may wonder, why do you even need to name slides in PowerPoint?

Naming slides in PowerPoint can help you structure your presentation better. It can help you re-organize your slides when using the slide sorter view . Moreover, the slide name helps you know the type of information present on the slide even without opening it.

So yes, naming slides won’t make your presentation look pretty. But, it will surely make it look more organized and help you save quite some time while designing it!

Plus, when creating a hyperlink within the presentation, it is easier to link to the specific slide when the slides have a name assigned to them.

1. How to Name a Slide in PowerPoint? 

Now that we have established that naming slides in PowerPoint can be helpful, let us take a look at the process of how to name a slide in PowerPoint.

To name a slide in PowerPoint, you have to go to the “ Outline view ” option and add the name of the slides in the slide navigation sidebar. The whole process is described in easy steps below.

Step-1: Click on the “View” tab

The first step of the process is to click on the “ View ” tab which is located in the ribbon of your PowerPoint presentation. It is the second to last tab.

Step-2: Select a Slide to Name from the “Outline view”

After you have clicked on the “ View ” tab, click on the “ Outline View ” option which is located in the “ Presentation Views ” section of the “ View ” tab.

Then, choose a slide to which you want to add a name.

Step-3: Add a name to the slide

After you select the “ Outline View ” option in the “ View ” tab, the slide navigation sidebar to the left of your screen will change and the outline of the PowerPoint presentation will appear instead.

Simply type in the name of the slide in the “ Outline view ”, and the slide will be named accordingly.

To go back to the default view of your presentation, click on the “ Normal View ” option under the “ View ” tab.

2. How to Rename a Slide in PowerPoint? 

If you want to rename a slide in PowerPoint, all you have to do is go back to the “Outline view” and change the name of the slide in the slide navigation bar as described in the previous section.

Follow the steps described in the above section and rewrite the name of your preferred slide.

One thing to remember is that when you name a slide, by default a slide title will be added to the slide. You can also edit the text in the “ Slide Title ” of the slide, and it will automatically rename the name of the slide.

3. How to Name All Slides in PowerPoint?

With the help of the “ Outline view ” option in PowerPoint, you can name all the slides in PowerPoint.

In fact, you can make an entire presentation (content only) using only the slide navigation sidebar of the “ Outline view ” option!

4. How to Name a Slide Layout in PowerPoint? 

A slide layout is different from a simple slide. Slide layouts in PowerPoint are basically preformatted layouts or containers that determine the design of the slide.

Slides layouts are used to create a design template and make it easier for the user to maintain design consistency when adding content.

That said, you can always create your own slide layouts or even rename a layout at your convenience.

This section is going to focus on how to name a slide layout. If you are interested in learning more about slide layouts, check out this article that I wrote earlier.

To name a slide layout in your PowerPoint presentation, you have to go to the “ Slide Master ” view option from the “ View ” tab and change the name of the slide.

The entire process is described step-by-step below.

Step-1: Go to the “Slide Master” view

The first step of this process is to select the “ Slide Master ” view, which is located in the “ Master Views ” section of the “ View ” tab.

The “ Slide Master ” view is the first option in the “ Master Views ” section of the “ View ” tab.

Step-2: Click on the “Rename” option

In this step, select the layout that you want to rename and then click on the “ Rename ” button in the “ Edit master ” section of the “ Slide Master ” tab.

The “ Edit Master ” section is the first section of the “ Slide Master ” view.

Step-3: Give a name to the layout

After you click on the “ Rename ” button, a pop-up window called “ Rename Layout ” will appear at the center of your screen.

Simply type in the preferred name for the layout and then hit the “ Rename ” button and the layout will be named accordingly.

5. How to Display the Slide Name during Slideshow?

Unfortunately, there is no direct way to display the slide name of the slide while in the presentation mode.

However, you can use a simple VBA code to make sure all the slides are displayed with their respective slide name. The whole process is described in simple steps below.

Step-1: Place the footers in the slides

The VBA code that you will be using during this method will cycle through the entire slide and insert the name of the slide in any shape that starts with the word ‘footer’.

So, the first step of this process is to add a footer to the slides that you want the slide name to be displayed in.

Step-2: Enable the Developer Mode

As a next step, you want to make sure that you have the developer tab enabled as we will need to use the visual basic editor in the remaining steps and then run the macros.

Follow the process in that article, enable the developer tab, and come back to this article to continue with the next steps.

Step-3: Open the Visual Basic Editor in PowerPoint

Once you have enabled the developer tab, click on the “ Developer ” tab, and then click on the “Visual Basic” button.

You can also press the “ Alt+F11 ” keys simultaneously. This will open the visual basic editor window directly.

Step-4: Click on the “Module” option

From the Visual Basics Editor window, click on the “ Module ” option which is located in the “ Insert ” tab.

Step-5: Paste the Macro code

Once you’ve opened the pop-up window that appears when you click on the “ Module ” option, simply paste the code given below in that window.

Step-6: Save the presentation

After you have inserted the code for the slide name, simply save the presentation from the “ File ” tab.

Step-7: Click on the “Macros” option

After you have saved the presentation as a ‘.pptm’ file, go to the “ Developer ” tab and select the “ Macros ” option in the “ Code ” section.

Step-8: Click on the “SlideShowName” option

In the last step, all you have to do is to select the “ SlideShowName ” option in the pop-up window and then hit the “ Run ” button. After that, the slide name will be displayed during the presentation mode.

6. How to Name a PowerPoint Presentation? 

To name a PowerPoint presentation, you have to go to the “ Save as ” option in the “ File ” tab. The whole process is described in 2 easy steps below.

Step-1: Go to the “File” tab

The first step of the process is to select the “ File ” tab, which is the first tab in the ribbon of your PowerPoint presentation.

Step-2: Type in the name of the presentation

After you have clicked on the “ File ” tab, you will be taken to a new window. Click on the “ Save As ” option and type in the name of the presentation in the top dialogue box.

After that just hit the “ Save ” button to the right of the dialogue box and the name of the presentation will be saved accordingly.

7. How to Add Your Name as an Author to a PowerPoint Presentation?

Step-1: Click on the “File” Tab

The first step of the process is to go to the “ File ” tab as explained in the previous section

Step-2: Type your name in the “Author” box in the “Info” section

In the “ Info ” tab, you will find an option to the right of the screen that says “ Author ” with a box written, “ Add an author ” on it.

Simply type in your name in the “ Author ” box and hit “ Enter ” on your keyboard. After that, your name will be added as an author in that PowerPoint presentation.
