Introducing the New 'New Warriors'

The classic team reunites to mentor a new generation of heroes.

When Kamala’s Law goes into effect in the highly anticipated one-shot, OUTLAWED , super heroics will be left to the adults and underage heroes will be banned unless they have official government assigned mentors. That’s where THE NEW WARRIORS come in.

New Warriors

Former teen vigilantes Night Thrasher, Firestar, Rage, Speedball, Namorita, and Silhouette step up to impart their wisdom to a batch of promising young kids, teaching them the ins and outs of surviving as a hero in the Marvel Universe. But will they be able to bridge the generation gap?

New Warriors

This group of all-new characters were created by Emmy-nominated writer Daniel Kibblesmith ( The Late Show With Stephen Colbert ) and rising superstar artist Luciano Vecchio (IRONHEART).

Check out Vecchio’s designs below along with Kibblesmith’s inspirations behind this one-of-a-kind team of young heroes!

Screentime

A Meme-Obsessed super teen whose brain became connected to the internet after becoming exposed to his grandfather’s “experimental internet gas.” Now he can see augmented reality and real-time maps, and can instantly Google any fact. Does this make him effectively a genius? He sure acts like it does.

"I wanted to have teen characters who felt as "now" as the New Warriors did in 1990,” explains Kibblesmith. “The New Warriors have been zeitgeist characters from the beginning, you get edgy skateboarding Night Thrasher in the '90s and the Reality TV team in the 2000s, and now in 2020, we have New Warriors who have never grown up without the Internet, and one character who appears to essentially live inside it.

“The word ’screen time’ is only ever used in a sort of restrictive sense, and because we’re doing a story about teenage rebels, a lot of the names are about teens fighting against labels that are put on them. So with Screentime, we liked the idea that he has infinite screen time.”

SNOWFLAKE AND SAFESPACE

SNOWFLAKE AND SAFESPACE

Psychic Twins. “All twins are psychic, but we’re psychic-er.” Snowflake, a cryokinetic, can materialize snowflake-shaped shuriken projectiles for throwing. Safespace can materialize pink forcefields, but he can’t inhabit them himself, the reflex only works if he’s protecting others. They’re hyper aware of modern culture and optics, and they see their Super Heroics as “a post-ironic meditation on using violence to combat bullying.” They're probably streaming this.

"Snowflake and Safespace are the twins," the writer says, "and their names are very similar to Screentime; it's this idea that these are terms that get thrown around on the internet that they don't see as derogatory. [They] take those words and kind of wear them as badges of honor.

"Safespace is a big, burly, sort of stereotypical jock. He can create forcefields, but he can only trigger them if he's protecting somebody else. Snowflake is non-binary and goes by they/them, and has the power to generate individual crystalized snowflake-shaped shurikens. The connotations of the word 'snowflake' in our culture right now are something fragile, and this is a character who is turning it into something sharp.

"Snowflake is the person who has the more offensive power, and Safespace is the person who has the more defensive power. The idea is that they would mirror each other and complement each other."

B-NEGATIVE

A teen “living vampire” exposed to Michael Morbius’s blood as a child in a rogue, but life-saving medical procedure. He still ages like a regular kid, but has all the abilities of Morbius. He’s also obsessed with all the music and attitude of a “classic” long-past decades like the '90s, and the '00s. “The world is a vampire…and so am I.”

"B-Negative is the goth kid. When he was a baby he got a rogue lifesaving blood transfusion, we assume, from Michael Morbius. And now he has a very similar look, and very similar vampire powers," shares Kibblesmith. “B-Negative ages like a regular person (or does he?) and he definitely drinks blood (or does he?), but designer/artist Luciano Vecchio took brilliant inspiration from the '90s Spider-Man cartoon and gave B-Negative the 'leech suckers' that the animated version of Morbius had on his palms.”

TRAILBLAZER

TRAILBLAZER

A regular kid scooped up into the world of teenage Super Heroing. Her “magic backpack” is actually a pocket dimension with seemingly infinite space, from which she can pull out useful or random objects—it’s not always under her control. She claims to get her power from god, but “not the god you’re thinking of.”

"She's a group home and foster kid who is volunteering at a senior center when this mysterious threat shows up and Night Thrasher runs to the rescue," the scribe adds. "And because she helps him, she ends up in the crosshairs of this new 'Outlawed' law...

“Trailblazer wants to help people, but she doesn't think of herself as a Super Hero (yet!),” Kibblesmith concludes. “The Marvel Universe is a reflection of our own, and when a new law gets put into place, it affects people in unforeseen ways.”

Warriors logo2

Warriors is a series of several books, organized into multiple arcs, featuring the adventures of feral cats living in self-supporting groups called Clans in the forest — ThunderClan , ShadowClan , RiverClan , and WindClan . Later, the fifth Clan, SkyClan , is introduced. The Clan cats mark their borders , defend their land from enemy cats, adhere to the warrior code —a set of rules each Clan cat must follow—and train their young to survive in the forest. They believe the spirits of their dead reside in StarClan , who send prophecies and signs to guide their living descendants. Each series follows one to four point of view characters as they struggle to grow up and survive the dangers that threaten their Clan, both outside of their borders and within.

Warriors series

The Warriors series features groups of spiritual cats called "Clans" living in the wild, following the warrior code, and honoring their ancestors.

The series was first released in 2003 and is created by Working Partners and Coolabi [1] and is published by HarperCollins [2] under the pen name Erin Hunter . Kate Cary [3] and Cherith Baldry [4] are the primary ghost writers, with Victoria Holmes formerly editing the overarching plot, and she, [5] Tui Sutherland , [6] Clarissa Hutton , [7] and Dan Jolley [8] working on supplementary material.

Depending on how you count the books (as the novellas are comprised of three short stories), the series is comprised of 96 to 110 to 117 published books . [9] The series also includes several short stories and plays , official essays , a Roblox game , a Warriors Adventure Game , an official website , and an animation production in development. As of 2024 , the series has sold over 70 million copies and has been translated into 38 languages, [10] including Arabic, Brazilian Portuguese, Catalan, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian, Israeli, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Persian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese, [11] and Original and Unified English Braille. [12] The series is also a New York Times Bestseller, with The Silent Thaw , River , and Sky notably recent books hitting that list. [13] [14] [15]

List of books by chronology and release [ ]

List of upcoming books by release [ ], list of cancelled titles [ ].

  • According to Vicky, this book was slated to be about "the tangled romantic, political and platonic relationships in the Clans’ history" set to be released in 2011 . [31] She wasn't sure exactly why it was canceled, but suspected that "HarperCollins didn’t feel there was enough extra material to fill an entire book." [32]
  • The working title of The New Prophecy series was Warriors: The Next Generation , a nod to Star Trek: The Next Generation . [33]
  • Vicky once thought that there could be more Field Guides [34] but has since changed her mind. [35]
  • Vicky has announced on her Facebook wall that a film studio called Alibaba Pictures has bought the right to make a film for Warriors . [36] They have teamed up with producer David Heyman. [37] However, the film was canceled in 2024 , [38] though an animation series by Tencent Video is currently in production. [39]

After #342: Captain America (1968) #395 (flashback under voice-over)

Silhouette   (abbreviated “Si” for guest appearances)

Silhouette has no appearances prior to New Warriors

Speedball   ( alt ) / Penance   (abbreviated “SpB” for guest appearances)

Speedball’s debut is a little tricky. By release, his first appearance was Marvel Age (1983) Annual 4 (2nd story). However, since Marvel Age was mostly a magazine and not a comic, his debut is widely considered to be Amazing Spider-Man (1963) Annual 22, released around the same time. To make things even more confusing, in story order his first chronological appearance as a hero is Speedball (1988) #1 – which closely followed on the heels of the other two books!

Pre-Debut Flashbacks: Civil War: Front Line (2006) #7 (2nd story)

Speedball (1988) #1-10: Speedball Classic: The Complete Collection Collects Speedball (1988) #1-10 and material from Amazing Spider-Man (193) Annual 22, Marvel Age Annual 4, Marvel Comics Presents (1988) #14 & #56, and Marvel Super-Heroes (1990) #1-2 & #5-6. Warriors Books Series in Order by Erin Hunter

S tep into a world where the forest is alive with whispers of prophecies, fierce battles, and the untamed spirits of clans of wild cats. Welcome to the enthralling universe of Erin Hunter's Warriors series, where the clash between loyalty and ambition, bravery and treachery, creates a mesmerizing tapestry across multiple generations of feline protagonists.

In this blog post, we'll embark on a journey through the sprawling landscape of the Warriors books, exploring the intricate chronicles, their order, and the captivating stories that have enamored readers worldwide. From the debut of Rusty, a housecat turned warrior named Firepaw, to the gripping adventures of clans facing perilous challenges, this series has captured the hearts and imaginations of both young and adult readers alike.

Join us as we delve into the forest territories, unravel the prophecies, and discover the ideal reading order, offering insights into the best age to dive into these tales of courage, friendship, and the unyielding spirit of the warrior cat in this fantasy genre series.

The Warriors series by Erin Hunter is an expansive and immersive saga that follows the lives of feral cats living in clans within a forest. It's a captivating blend of adventure, loyalty, and the eternal struggle between good and evil, centered around the lives of various cat protagonists across generations.

The series begins with a house cat named Rusty, who joins ThunderClan and becomes Firestar, a courageous leader navigating the complex dynamics of the clans. As Firestar and his companions face challenges, battles, and prophecies, readers are drawn into a world where honor, loyalty, and the bonds of friendship are tested.

Across multiple story arcs, each with its own set of prophecies and challenges, the narrative delves into the intricate relationships between the clans, exploring themes of leadership, identity, and the balance between the warrior code and personal desires. Characters like Firestar, Graystripe, Brambleclaw, and their kin face internal and external conflicts, often grappling with their destinies while navigating intricate political landscapes within and between the clans.

Throughout the series, readers witness epic battles, forbidden romances, personal sacrifices, and the enduring resilience of these wild cats as they confront adversities both within their clans and from outside threats. Each installment adds layers to the overarching story, providing depth to the world-building and character development, making it a compelling journey for readers of all ages.

Overall, the Warriors book series offers a gripping narrative filled with action, suspense, and emotional depth, creating an enchanting world that has captivated readers with its rich storytelling and vibrant cast of feline characters.

Do I Need to Read the Warriors Book Series in Order?

Reading the Warriors series in order is highly recommended for the best understanding of the overarching storyline, character development, and the progression of the clans' world. The series is structured in arcs, each consisting of several books, and they build upon one another.  I would recommend reading

Starting from "The Prophecies Begin" series, where readers are introduced to the world of the clans, their dynamics, and the central characters, subsequent series like "The New Prophecy," "Power of Three," "Omen of the Stars," "A Vision of Shadows," and "The Broken Code" continue the narrative, introducing new challenges, prophecies, and characters while further developing the existing ones.

While each arc focuses on different characters and their journeys, there are interwoven threads, prophecies, and events that carry over from one series to the next. This continuity enhances the depth of the storyline, making it more rewarding for readers who follow the books in order with new threats and great danger for cats of the clans.

However, some readers might jump into later arcs without having read the previous ones, and while they can understand the immediate storyline, they might miss out on the broader context and connections between characters and events.

In essence, reading the Warriors series in order allows for a more comprehensive and engaging experience, enabling readers to fully appreciate the evolution of the clans, the prophecies, and the development of the characters across generations.

As I do from time to time, I often post about various characters or issue synopsis stuff I have on this site. I’d just posted about issue #44 on Twitter – or X – or whatever they call it these days.

As I stared at the cover – I got an idea. I wonder if the model for this issue would be willing to do an interview type thing for the website?

Well, this idea grew – but then, I had to locate her. So using my investigation skills – I reached out to the person I believed to be her (and ironically their picture was of them scuba diving – I mean, this almost seemed too obvious that it just had to be her?) I mean, not really, but I was kind of hoping.

I had sent her a message explaining I ran NewWarriors.com and had recently posted a link to issue #44 from the website – which made me wonder – if I had reached the right person – if she would be up for a quick Q&A session.

Much to my surprise it was her! (I guess I was right – the scuba diving was a give away!) And not only that, she was more than happy to do a Q&A session. I told her I wanted to make it easy – I’d just crank out some questions and send it her way – and she could reply at her leisure. No need to jump on Zoom or Discord or anything like that. I just wanted to make this quick (and as painless as possible!) considering she was doing me an immense favor.

new warriors books

Well. Folks, it didn’t stop there. She explained that her roommate back then, Rob Tokar had been an editor of New Warriors – and that she was good friends with him and could talk to him and see if he wanted in on this too! I was thrilled! So she spoke to Rob and he joined in – and I sent him a list of questions as well – and he said, the key player in the photoshoot was Assistant Editor Paula Foye! And he spoke with her – and she said she’d answer questions as well.

So allow me to begin with introducing you to Martrese Beck! First and foremost, a thousand thanks to Martrese for the time taken to answer these! And bring in Rob! Who then brought in Paula! And then all the cool stuff you were able to scan (which I will include!) OK – I am trying to remain calm. Trying , I said.

OK. Regaining my composure. Ahem.

Q. First, I am curious – had you done any modeling prior to doing your work for New Warriors #44? If I did my homework correctly – you had worked at Estee Lauder and then became a Graphic Designer?

new warriors books

A: I’d never done modeling. I was on a one-year break from NYC when Rob and I did this project. See my answer to the next question re: career path.

Q. Well, for someone who hadn’t done any modeling, you nailed it as Kymera! Just going to get that out of the way, now. So tell us a little bit about your career?

A: My career began in the Public Relations department at Estée Lauder’s corporate office in NYC, then a one-year stint in equine veterinary care in PA, then back to Estée Lauder (in their packaging design department this time, where they paid for my graphic design degree from Parsons). The only correlation between my “day job” and doing the cover shoot would be that both involved cosmetics, though no pointy ears or scowling at Estée Lauder.

new warriors books

Q. After the time you spent getting those pointy ears set – you could have been an expert at Estée Lauder!

How had you been selected to model as Namorita/Kymera for New Warriors #44?

A: Rob Tokar and I met while attending La Salle University in Philly, and we’ve been very close friends ever since. SOOO many fun college memories with him! We were roommates in Brooklyn after we graduated—he was an editor at Marvel, I was in the PR department at Estée Lauder, and our third roommate was a freelance comic illustrator, James Fry . Rob came up with the idea to feature a photograph on the cover of #44. I suppose he asked me to model because of our friendship and my affinity for being in the water. I love SCUBA diving, snorkeling, swimming in general. I was probably a good fit for Namorita/Kymaera’s character.

new warriors books

Q. I do love the fact – that when I thought I’d found you – your profile picture was of you scuba diving! That struck me as funny when you confirmed you were you! And somehow very fitting, more so now, that you portrayed Namorita/Kymera on the cover! Speaking of that, I understand that Kate Wadsworth was brought on – to paint the skin blue, apply the pointed ears and make them look real – and even give you “Atlantean” eyebrows – was there ever a moment, since I heard this all took quite a bit of time – that you wondered, “What have I gotten myself into?”

new warriors books

A: No, I’m always game for fun, new adventures, especially when Rob is involved. He and I were Communications majors at La Salle, and we were always helping each other on film projects, broadcasting projects, theatrical productions, etc. When Rob says, “Hey! I’ve got an idea. . .” ALWAYS say “yes.”

Q. There’s two things I am loving more and more about this! I love how close you and Rob are! (And clearly still are since you are still in contact with him!) And I love how you’re like, “Paint me blue? Put stuff on my face and paint eye brows? Go outside? In the dark? Into questionable areas sometimes, dressed like this? Sure!” That’s such a magnificent attitude. I already thought you were cool for having done the cover – but seeing this answers, just seals the fact! But back to the questions! I need to stop side tracking myself! What was it like having to be ‘colored’ blue? And did you know that when you accepted the job that you would be colored blue?

new warriors books

A: Though time-consuming, the process of being transformed into this character was a blast. I did a lot of theater in high school and college, so “playing dress-up” was normal for me, and I enjoyed it immensely. I knew what the process would involve ahead of time. Remember, this was THIRTY (ohmigod) years ago, and special effects were done mostly manually back then. Not everyone had access to Photoshop and AI.

Q. Please do not remind me of how long ago it was! I understand Rob, who was the editor of New Warriors at the time, was your roommate. Were you familiar with the character (or the comics) and were there any challenges during the photoshoot to capture the ‘right feel’ of Namorita?

new warriors books

A: I wasn’t very familiar with comic characters, just picking up small details from living with two guys who worked in the industry, and I’d been to Marvel’s Park Avenue office a few times (which was very cool). But my lack of knowledge didn’t hinder my work that day. Just like any acting/modeling job, you get briefed on the character, and you bring it to life as you see fit.

Q. During the photoshoot did you get to meet any of the folks writing/drawing the New Warriors at the time (such as Fabian Nicieza or Darick Robertson)?

new warriors books

A: Not during the shoot, no. I may have met them during one of my visits to Marvel’s office, but I don’t recall. Rob might recall if he introduced me to them.

Q. What are some of the particular memories that stick out to you about the photoshoot?

A: I recall it taking a VERY long time to do the makeup, including the ears. We took photos in the studio, but we also wanted to get images outside, and we were starting to lose light. We quickly went to a nearby vacant lot in Alphabet City (East Village in NYC) where there were a lot of metal objects arranged on a chain-link fence (hubcaps, etc.), and we did some shots with the metal textures behind me. But as you can see from the finished cover, the image was extremely close-cropped, so the background really didn’t matter.

new warriors books

Q. When I first approached you to ask if you’d be willing – you mentioned you had some memorabilia from the photoshoot? What kind of memorabilia did you end up with?

A: I still have the contact sheets (from using 35mm film – SO old-school!), and some behind-the-scenes photos. I regret getting rid of the blue-sequined bathing suit I wore that day (that was my personal property). I loved that suit, and even though it wouldn’t fit me now, I should’ve kept it for posterity.

Q. As a graphics designer now is there anything you have taken as lessons from the photoshoot that carried over into being a graphic designer?

A: Not so much lessons, but it’s fun to think back on how far the graphics industry has come in thirty years. I use Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign every day, and especially with AI, the current tools make work SO much faster and easier. There was a LOT of hands-on labor that went into that cover—today, we could do a lot of it digitally. Same with photography. We shot on 35mm film—mainstream digital photography was in its infancy in 1993. Ah, progress!

new warriors books

Q. I remember bringing film in that you’d need to get developed. It could takes days before you got the pictures back. Indeed, progress! It’s been 20 years since –

A: Actually, it’s been thirty years! We shot this cover in October, 1993, for the February, 1994, issue.

Q. Listen, I refuse to believe that much time has gone by! Clearly math is not one of my strengths! You’re right – it’s been THIRTY years since the photoshoot – what have you been doing lately?

A. I’ve worked in various graphic design jobs since 1994, and I’ve enjoyed my career path immensely. I moved from NYC to Oregon in 2008, and I currently live with my scruffy dog and sometimes-scruffy partner in a suburb of Portland, working from home since the pandemic, enjoying all the fabulous things Oregon has to offer.

Night Thrasher news.

new warriors books

The folks at ComicBook.com landed a quick interview with J. Holtham (who will be writing the upcoming Night Thrasher mini series).

J. Holtham mentioned his editor, Martin Biro, had approached him about doing the limited series, and J. Holtham jumped at the chance to tell the story.

He also shared, “ Thrash died tragically, kicking off a terrible chain of events. And then he was brought back to life. I’m starting from what that must be like for a person, particularly a person as driven and focused as Dwayne is. At the start of the series, he’s been doing some soul-searching and finds himself at a crossroads about his future. “

new warriors books

He added, “ There was no way I was gonna do a Night Thrasher series and not include Silhouette. Their relationship is core to his story and she’s also someone we haven’t seen enough of lately. So she has to be by his side, working with him, even though they have their own issues. “

When he was asked about Night Thrasher’s costume, he said, “ Alan Quah, our cover artist, did amazing work on the new costume and on creating the look for THE O.G. It was a dream working with him (as well as Nelson Daniel, the interiors artist) to craft these looks. And yes, there’s a story reason for the costume change. The 90s were awesome (I’m from the 90s), but times have changed and Thrash’s look needed a bit of an update. We made sure to keep the spirit of his old costume, the general feel of it, while adding some new touches and surprises. “

6 New Paperbacks to Read This Week

Shreya Chattopadhyay

Ready for your next book? Check out these newly released paperbacks, from Ralph Ellison’s selected letters to Emily Henry’s newest novel, a history of two abolitionist sisters and more.

Here are six paperbacks we recommend →

This novel, one of our Notable Books of 2023, follows a Korean American woman whose life is upended when she becomes obsessed with a K-pop band member. As Alexandra Jacobs wrote in her review, “Y/N” plumbs “the precarity of love, and how the modern self is forged less in community than mass consumption.”

In the 1800s, Angelina and Sarah Grimke left their slaveholding family in the South and gained fame as abolitionists. Outlining their lives and those of their Black relatives, this history takes the sisters “off their pedestal so that we understand them as pieces of a tapestry that could only be sewn in America,” our reviewer wrote.

Henry’s novel traces the stories we tell — both to others and to ourselves. Harriet and Wyn, along with their college friends, convene yearly for a vacation in Maine. This year’s no different, except for one thing: After a decade together, they’ve broken up — but can’t find the right way to let the group know.

The mind of the musician turned writer renowned for his classic novel “Invisible Man” is made visible in his own words in these collected letters, from notes to family in Oklahoma City to correspondences with writers like Richard Wright and Saul Bellow.

In mountainous rural Tennessee, Stella comes from a line of women who worship a monstrous cave-dwelling God. Her communions with him go deep, so deep that she must flee. Returning years later, Stella contends with both her past and her power in this work of gothic fiction that our former horror columnist called “a thing of beauty, brutal in the vein of Cormac McCarthy.”

Christiane Desroches-Noblecourt was a Louvre curator, a member of the anti-Nazi underground and an archaeologist who prevented the destruction of Egyptian artifacts while breaking into a male-dominated field. This Editors’ Choice pick animates her action-packed life.

Netflix’s Live-Action ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Is a Beautifully Crafted Disappointment: TV Review

Avatar: The Last Airbender. (L to R) Ian Ousley as Sokka, Kiawentiio as Katara, Gordon Cormier as Aang in season 1 of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Cr. Courtesy of Netflix © 2024

Ever since its premiere nearly two decades ago, “ Avatar: The Last Airbender ” has been a fan favorite animated franchise. Co-created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the original series garnered critical acclaim and spawned an extended universe. That’s why there was much to anticipate when Netflix announced a “reimagined” live-action “Avatar” television series, helmed by DiMartino and Konietzko as co-showrunners and executive producers. Unfortunately, that euphoria was short-lived, as the pair left the project over what was described as “creative differences.”

Tasked with adapting the animated series’ first season of 20 episodes into just eight hours, the live-action “Avatar” starts promisingly enough. After living in harmony for millennia, the power-crazed Fire Nation, led by Fire Lord Sozin (Hiro Kanagawa), rises against the world’s other three nations — the Water Tribes, the Earth Kingdom and Air Nomads — in a ploy for domination. Using stunning CGI and special effects, the series’ prologue is recounted in majestic color, explaining the history of the war and precocious Airbender Aang’s (Gordon Cormier) life before he goes missing. It’s a dynamic entry-point for lifelong “Avatar” enthusiasts and newcomers, who can quickly orient themselves in the days before Aang, who learns he is the Avatar (the master of all four elements), is frozen in the ice for 100 years. The Avatar’s absence allows the Fire Nation’s comet-fueled war to rage on, obliterating the Air Nomads and wreaking havoc on the Water Tribes and the Earth Kingdom.

Twenty minutes into the first chapter, “Avatar” flashes forward a century. Katara (Kiawentiio), the sole water bender of the Southern Water Tribe, and her over-protective brother Sokka (Ian Ousley) stumble upon Aang’s resting place, inadvertently awakening him. Though initially apprehensive, the pair embrace Aang as their friend and join him on his quest to master the other elements, end the Fire Nation’s war and restore balance to the world.

As with many live-action films and television adaptations from written or animated sources, Kim and his writers’ room conflated and combined several pivotal narrative beats. However, entwining Jet’s (Sebastian Amoruso) story of freedom fighting with the Earth Kingdom’s sparkling city Omashu and the tale of King Bumi (Utkarsh Ambudkar) feel rushed and overly convenient – especially for those who know the original series well. Moreover, stripping Sokka of the comic relief that enriched the animated version of his character is hugely disappointing and makes for a more one-note depiction.

Despite these missteps, there are a few standout moments in the series. “Avatar’s” opener and its second episode, “Warriors,” remain the two strongest installments of the show, while the penultimate episode (“The North”) injects a vital intenseness and a gorgeous display of water bending needed to reinvigorate the series in its final hours. And despite many of the series’ lackluster performances, Elizabeth Yu’s turn as the cunning and volatile Princess Azula — who is desperate to impress her father, the sadistic Fire Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim), and outsmart her exiled older brother Prince Zuko (Dallas Liu) — is by far one of the most powerful showcases of the series. Also, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee’s role as Uncle Iroh tempers the tone of many scenes that bend toward melodrama in the hands of more novice actors.

Looking back on the original, animated “Avatar,” it’s clear that DiMartino and Konietzko had a distinct vision for Aang and this universe. Without their careful guidance, the live-action series loses the elements that made the animated work unique and refined. Ultimately, “Avatar: The Last Airbender” feels like it’s putting on a show, instead of meticulously immersing the audience in this stunningly crafted world.

“Avatar: The Last Airbender” premieres Feb. 22 on Netflix .
