How To Add Or Update Your Resume On LinkedIn

Have it ready to go, just in case

LinkedIn is one of the largest professional networks and one of the best job search sites . While its main purpose is connecting recruiters and people searching for jobs, you can also use it to track someone down or to find out who’s looking for you online .

If you’re using this network to find a new job, you might run across some issues, like how to add or update your resume on LinkedIn. Although, the question you should ask yourself first is whether you should be uploading your resume on LinkedIn at all.

How To Add Or Update Your Resume On LinkedIn image 1

Should You Add Your Resume To LinkedIn?

At first, the answer seems obvious – of course, you should attach your resume to your LinkedIn profile. The sole purpose of your profile on the network is to land you a job .

Adding your resume to LinkedIn can help in more ways than one:

  • Your future employer doesn’t need to scroll through your LinkedIn profile to find the information they’re after. It’s all condensed in a one-page summary that is your resume.
  • It gives the employer quick access to your contact details. If they’re interested, they can contact you directly avoiding long conversations on the network.
  • Your LinkedIn profile is probably rather broad, displaying all your past professional skills and experience in different work spheres. But your resume can be a narrowed-down version of that, tailored to the job you’re searching for.
  • Finally, you already put so much effort into creating an attractive resume that speaks about your talents and accomplishments. Why not show it off to your potential future employers?

However, there can be some downsides to attaching your resume to your LinkedIn profile that you shouldn’t ignore.

The biggest one of them is risking your personal data being shared publicly online. Once you upload your resume, you will no longer have any control over who downloads it and gets access to your private information, like your email address, phone number, maybe even your physical address. It also means that everyone on LinkedIn can now download, copy, and use your resume as they wish.

One more thing you should consider before you add your resume to LinkedIn is what it will look like to your current employer if you have one. When you upload your resume, your job search status on LinkedIn becomes active. That may send the wrong message to your colleagues at your current place of employment.

All in all, once you upload your resume, it sends a message that you’re actively looking for a job. Some recruiters might find it handy (that you have your resume right on your LinkedIn page), while others might find it desperate. In the end of the day, it’s up to you what you think works best for building your LinkedIn presence.

How To Add Your Resume To LinkedIn

If, after you consider all the pros and cons of adding your resume to your LinkedIn profile, you still want to do it, here is how to upload your resume.

Before, you used to be able to add your resume to the summary section of your LinkedIn profile. Now the layout has changed, and you have to add your resume to the Featured section to have it displayed on your profile.

  • On your profile, either scroll down to the Featured section or tap the Add profile section button.

  • From the pop-up menu, choose Media .

  • Find your latest resume on your computer, and select Open . Make sure your document has a clear name like your name + resume .
  • After you click save, your resume will be featured on your LinkedIn profile.

How To Upload Your Resume For Easy Apply Applications

LinkedIn offers a second (and less obvious) option for adding your resume to your profile. You can save up to three different resumes when applying for jobs on LinkedIn using the Easy Apply function.

To save your resume when applying for a job on LinkedIn, follow the steps:

How To Add Or Update Your Resume On LinkedIn image 6

  • From LinkedIn’s navigation bar, select Jobs .

  • From the positions offered, find one that has the Easy Apply icon on it. Those are the jobs that you can quickly apply to using a saved resume on LinkedIn.

  • When prompted, click Upload Resume and attach your latest resume to the application. If you’re using different resumes for different positions, make sure to use distinctive names for each of your saved resumes.

How To Update Your Resume On LinkedIn

One thing you want to look out for when having your resume on your LinkedIn profile is making sure it’s always up to date. You don’t want to seem sloppy to your future employers with a resume that’s a few years (or few jobs) old.

How To Add Or Update Your Resume On LinkedIn image 9

To update your resume on LinkedIn, you’ll have to delete your old one and upload a new document. Once you have your updated resume ready, go to the Featured section of your profile.

How To Add Or Update Your Resume On LinkedIn image 10

Click on the resume you’d like to replace, and select Delete . Once you delete the item, follow the steps described under the How To Upload Your Resume On LinkedIn section of this article.

To avoid any confusion from potential recruiters, keep an eye on your resume on LinkedIn and make sure it’s always fresh and up to date.

Build Up Your LinkedIn Profile

LinkedIn is a great network for anyone looking to further their career. Even the basic free version allows you to showcase your professional skills and accomplishments, paint the best picture of yourself for any potential employers, and apply for as many positions as you like. That of course though takes time and effort.

If you’re looking to jump over a few steps straight to the top of the career ladder, consider investing in LinkedIn Premium . The Career tier comes with a lot of useful perks like applicant statistics and visibility insights that will help you upgrade your LinkedIn profile.

Everyone makes this critical resume mistake - Here's this LinkedIn expert's top tips to fix it

S earching for a new job can be stressful, but there’s one thing you have to do before you even start applying: build the perfect resume. LinkedIn career expert Andrew McCaskill sat down with TheStreet’s J.D. Durkin to go over the do’s and don’ts of resume building.

Full Video Transcript Below:

J.D. DURKIN: Talk to me about, you know, oftentimes before you even get into that door, it's based on what's off a piece of paper. It's based off your resume- do's and don'ts of resume building, I'd imagine avoid typos is probably somewhere on that list. But that in and of itself is a competitive field. Right? Hey, you've got your CV, I've got mine. And before they know anything else about us, it's just whatever's off the paper that shines through.

ANDREW MCCASKILL: Here's some things that I think are really important. One is the verbiage should be action oriented and results oriented. So no passive language in your resume and on your LinkedIn profile. It should be very skills first. Like these are the things that I do incredibly well. Here's how I've used those skills and here's the results that I've garnered for my company or my employer using those skills really, really well.

The other thing goes back to that thing about the whole typo thing, man, it should be easy to read, it should be easy to follow. And there are tons of tools out there from AI, tools to proofreaders and all of that thing that you should not really have any sort of typos and big mistakes in your resume. One of the things that people are fearful of, though, is that what if I have a time gap on my resume? There's not the same stigma about having taken time off from work anymore. Don't try to hide that. Be really forthcoming about it. If you've had, if you took off time off to be a caregiver or if you took time off for mental health reasons, or if you took time off just to reassess or learn a new skill or to take a break. Right it's okay to have those gaps on there. Don't fudge them, be honest about them and upfront. Move the months around, OK? And then they look really weird because then the months are wrong on your resume or when you look at your LinkedIn or you forget the dates in your head like, listen, I think that being honest and forthcoming about that in the beginning, you'll be fine.

Tips for Writing a Better LinkedIn IT Support Specialist Resume

1. Use a Professional Tone: LinkedIn is a professional social networking site. Therefore, your resume should reflect this tone. Avoid using casual language or unnecessary jargon.

2. Highlight Your Skills: Make sure to list all the relevant skills you have acquired in the IT support field such as troubleshooting, system administration, network configuration etc. This will give potential employers an idea of what you're capable of.

3. Showcase Your Experience: List all your past roles and responsibilities in detail, focusing on achievements rather than just tasks. Quantify your achievements whenever possible.

4. Include Certifications: If you have any certifications related to IT support such as CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+ etc., be sure to include them on your resume as they can significantly increase your chances of getting noticed by recruiters.

5. Use Keywords: Many companies use applicant tracking systems (ATS) to filter out resumes that don't match their criteria, so make sure you use keywords from the job description in your resume.

6. Keep It Concise: Try to keep your resume brief and concise, ideally no more than two pages long. Avoid including irrelevant information or experience.

7. Proofread: Always proofread your resume before posting it online to avoid any spelling or grammar mistakes which could create a negative impression.

8. Update Regularly: Keep updating your LinkedIn profile regularly with new skills, experiences or certifications that you acquire over time.

9. Add Recommendations and Endorsements: Recommendations from previous employers or colleagues can greatly boost your profile's credibility and visibility.

10. Personalize Your URL: Personalizing your LinkedIn URL makes it easier for people to find you and looks more professional on a resume or business card.

11. Use Action Verbs: Begin each bullet point with action verbs like 'managed,' 'developed,' 'designed,' etc., as these words are more engaging and show initiative.

12. Show Personality: While maintaining professionalism, let some of your personality shine through in the way you describe yourself and what motivates you in the work that you do.

13. Be Honest: Honesty is key; never exaggerate or lie about skills or experiences because it will harm your credibility if discovered.

14. Include Volunteer Work or Projects: If relevant, include volunteer work or personal projects that showcase additional skills not utilized in professional settings.

15.Be Specific About Your Role & Contribution : Instead of saying "worked as part of a team", specify what YOUR role was within that team and how YOU contributed to its success.

Key Skills Hiring Managers Look for on LinkedIn IT Support Specialist Resumes

Incorporating keywords from the job description in your application for an IT Support Specialist role at LinkedIn is essential due to the company's use of Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS). ATS are software tools used by many companies, including LinkedIn, to sort through hundreds of applications they receive. These systems scan resumes and cover letters for specific keywords relevant to the job posting to filter out unqualified candidates before a human ever sees the application. Therefore, if you don't include relevant keywords that match the job description—like 'IT support,' 'troubleshooting,' or specific technologies mentioned—you risk your application being automatically discarded. By tailoring your resume and cover letter with these keywords, you increase your chances of getting past these initial screening processes and securing an interview.

When applying for IT Support Specialist positions at LinkedIn, you may encounter a list of common skills and key terms.

Scammers impersonate well-known companies, recruit for fake jobs on LinkedIn and other job platforms

Facebook

Scammers are lurking on LinkedIn and other job sites, posing as “recruiters” for well-known companies. But instead of looking to hire you, they’re really looking to take your money and personal information.

It starts with a direct message on a job search site like Indeed or LinkedIn. The “recruiter” says you have exactly the skill set they’re looking for. Next, they’ll email an official-looking invitation for a virtual interview along with a Job Briefing guide that gives you details about your job duties and job benefits. (Did that email come from a personal email, not a company account? That’s a red flag.) After the virtual interview, you get an official-looking offer letter, complete with the company’s name and logo.

But after they offer you the job, they’ll push for your money and personal information. You’ll get an invoice (it’s fake) for equipment like a computer they’ll order for you, but tell you to pay for — using cash, Zelle, or PayPal. They promise to reimburse you. But they won’t because it’s a scam.

Or, instead, they’ll ask for your personal information, like your driver’s license, Social Security, or bank account number, to fill out “employment paperwork.” And they want it before they’ll answer your questions about the job. But if you share it, they might steal your identity.

To spot these scams, know that honest employers will never ask you to pay upfront fees for a job or for equipment. And they won’t ask you to pay them using cash, Zelle or PayPal . Anyone who does is a scammer.

To avoid these scams, never give out personal information before doing some research. Contact the company directly using a phone number you know to be legitimate — not one you got from the “recruiter.” Or go to the company’s website. If you can’t confirm the job is real, it could be a scam.

The FTC has resources to help you spot job scams . If you spot a scam, report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov .

True but some of these scammers are VERY sneaky and good at fooling those who don't know about this yet or what to look for. You don't know what you don't know. Especially those who aren't tech-savvy enough to realize how easily and often this stuff happens. Don't victim blame please.

Maybe if a place is added to upload/add Documents/Video/ Files when Reporting Fraud, it will be of tremendous help on Reporting Frauds.

This is a good idea and there may be places but IDK for sure rn. It's been years since my last ID theft (thankfully, bc of info like this) but reporting does need to be one stop shopping so to speak in one place and super easy to do.

The was a place to add pics or documents FYI

Thank You. This is a wonderful sight, and most helpful.

I don't know how anyone is supposed to get a legit job online anymore, and thats the only way most companies advertise and hire. Many are pyramid scheme scams disguised as "insurance sales" or somesuch. My husband almost got caught by one so Thank You for continuing to spread awareness about these things. They are rampant even on legit sites like LinkedIn, Monster.com, Indeed, everywhere. I wish the sites could keep them out but they don't so who can you trust?

What did the job listing say? I'm trying to figure out if the ones I'm seeing on Zip Recruiter promising like $250k/year are real or do you have to recruit to make money

I have had problems with LinkedIn, I tried unsubscribe from their website only find out wanting you to use a password connected a search engine or company profile by scam associated through job profile link to Indeed job search engines.

This article is chalk full of great advice. The one problem with articles like these is that they shy away from the problems associated with those who are looking for a job because of a difficult situation. The ones who feel they have to take anything they get! This can lead to bad judgement and impaired risk assessment in the job search process. To avoid these kind of scams, the best way to do research is to use community resources like state labor and employment offices, secretary of state databases, chamber of commerce, and others to do some cursory filtering and assurance of the employer and their credibility.

Please look into biolife aka takeda

I reported a few scams to zip recruiter and they just ignored me. They just want the money and don't bother to protect job seekers. Very shameful.

Report the scam attempt immediately to the FBI'S Cyber Crimes Division, the US Attorney General and local Law Enforcement. Also report the scam to the site it was initially posted on like Indeed, Zip Recruiter etc.

Thanks for your post with red signals against fake job placement companies.

In fact, there are many others on LinkedIn for business tie-up, one should know him/her with reference of your known network. Else, you will lose your money. I have lost money after such tie-up with Dubai based company.

Why in the world doesn't LinkedIn do a better job of monitoring their website? I'll have to reconsider my membership and remove any and all of my personal information on the site.

I been a victim of the job scheme. They sent check supposedly for work or office equipment. Wanted me to deposited into my account and send them the money. I knew when they mention the check, SCAM!

I got scammed last week by a group of people claiming to be from the company Trip.com. They were good. They did a Zoom job interview, never asked for any personal info, no money. They had official looking uniform tops with the Trip.com logo. They asked all the right questions. I was 100% sure I had the "work from home Customer service job. They sent me a $3500 check by over night Fed ex. Said to deposit it and wait a few days for it to clear and contact them for the vendors I was to use for my equipment. I deposited it and the next day was informed my account was closed for fraud. Being investigated for criminal acts. Told First Citizens investigator I have the messages saved on my phone as well as the contact info but she didnt want them. There should be some sort of insurance for this kind of stuff. The check looked official. Everyone BEWARE

Why can real companies say they are hiring for positions through Indeed and like sites when the positions are in fact not really available? Even sending you a reply that they received your application and are reviewing it presently. I can prove this happened to me.

I am receiving text messages almost daily from people offering me a job with starting pay at $50.85 an hour. $50 an hour???? Please. I'm not that stupid

I just received this email today at 8:31 AM, I thought it looked suspicious for obvious reasons, but I'm sure it's a scam after reading this article. Thanks for sharing this valuable information.

Our company is a recruiting company and the Scammers have been targeting job candidates using fake job postings in our names, and calling and emailng candidates on Linkedin using our recruiters LI profiles and names via Text messages. This is serious stuff and every time we thing we have shut down a fake website they have created, they do it again. Smart job candidates are going to our website inquiry form and letting us know this is happening to them but this will ultimately hurt our business and unsuspecting job candidates. NOTE that they usually advertise high paying, fully remote data entry or customer service jobs so they are praying on the hourly workforce. If anyone knows of a way to stop these crooks, please post a response here.

They insisted on meeting through Teams (Microsoft) The correspondence did not have a connection to any organization and I insisted on establishing Humanity through ZOOM. They immediately disappeared. I blocked them and informed NoxoPharm.com of this activity.

I was sent a check, it cleared but now I need to cash app funds to a third party for equipment instead of being told where to buy the equipment. Why would they not pay the vendor directly instead of sending it to me just to send it out via cashapp

There are very many scammers in Europe countries for example the prolink innovations connection, profylink all are scammers, they have cheated my €90 and diciving me that money is for application process, medical certificate, documents process but now if am to connect to them through email, they can respond to me.

I just went through this, but during the process, I had a gut feeling. I found this article and that was all the verification I needed.

These people are horrible taking advantage like this.

beware of PLAID RECRUITERS, specifically nick sullivan.

I had a "recruiter" ask for my date of birth, no year and the last 4 digits of my ssn. I've never been asked that before and I've worked with several recruiters over the years.

I was reached out by what seemed like a legit company, Crown Brand-Building Packaging in Pennsylvania by their Human Resources department, which does exist. They sent me a Screening Test/Interview Questions for a Regulatory Specialist form. After I filled it out, the rep immediately informs me I was accepted for the position. Be careful all.

How a woman landed a role at Google with the help of her viral job application video

  • Mariana Kobayashi is an account executive at Google's Dublin office.
  • After being laid off from LinkedIn, she sent a job application video to Google.
  • She missed out on the first role, but she said the video got Google's attention.

Insider Today

It's notoriously difficult to get a job at Google .

The tech giant, once famous for its lavish perks , receives millions of applications a year, with some estimating that it's nearly 10 times harder to land a job there than to get accepted to Harvard.

For Mariana Kobayashi, an account executive currently working at Google's Dublin office, it was all about standing out from the crowd.

After being laid off from LinkedIn , Kobayashi said she set her sights on Google in June last year.

But she told Business Insider that she decided to take a different approach to applying: curating a video about why she should get the role.

The video ran through her work experience and had pre-recorded references from former colleagues and friends in the industry.

The whole process took about 10 hours, she said. After it was done, Kobayashi used ContactOut, an email lookup tool, to send it directly to the hiring manager.

She also posted the video online — and it quickly went viral.

"Lots of people reached out to me offering coffee chats and letting me know about positions," she said. "Then the recruiter for the role reached out, and I had a call with her."

A 'purpose-driven' application

Kobayashi said the Google recruiter told her she was overqualified for the grad scheme she'd applied for.

However, she said she was impressed with the video and Kobayashi's LinkedIn content and promised to keep her in the pipeline for further roles.

"I followed up every two months, letting her know my progress and what I was up to. In September, I saw a position for an account executive," Kobayashi said.

Kobayashi said she was able to get a referral from a friend and applied immediately despite being slightly underqualified for the role.

The recruiter also reached out about the role, offering to connect her with the hiring manager.

"It was a very purpose-driven application, so I think that made me stand out, and then because the recruiter was already kind of on my side, that helped," she said.

Acknowledging her 'red flags'

Kobayashi said she sent out two documents after the interviews. One highlighted why a company should hire her and another detailed what she perceived as her "red flags" or employment gaps.

"It was a document saying: 'This is why you should not hire me,'" she said. "But I also included a page saying: 'This is how I'm going to turn my red flags into green flags.'"

She said she lacked sales experience and wanted to acknowledge this while showing she had a plan to address it.

A three-step interview

She said the interview involved three stages of roughly 45-minute calls, including a case study and a leadership assessment.

"After an interview, I'd send them the documents, and they loved it," she said.

After completing the interview process, she followed up with the recruiter weekly.

"I had to wait one month until I got a response telling me I was in the final pool of people," she said. "A week later, I got a job offer."
