How to back up kindle books to a computer – step-by-step guides.

In this post, you’ll find two ways to back up Kindle books from the cloud to your computer. One requires a Kindle; the other one doesn’t.

Having Kindle books stored in the cloud is very convenient. It allows to sync reading progress between devices registered to the same account. It also is a way to back up the books you don’t currently read.

Well, sometimes it’s good to back up the books the other way round. In this post, we’ll show how to do it, using:

  • the Kindle e-reader,
  • the Kindle for Mac/PC application.

Ebookstores have much more control over Kindle users’ accounts than anyone could imagine. This e-reader privacy chart explains this in detail.

In other words, someone else has access to your Kindle library and it’s not 100% up to you what and when will change. It’s how cloud storage works, we either deny it or live with it.

While removing content from user’s account is an exception, you may see changes in books you’ve bought. It happens when a publisher updates the file associated with the book. It could be just a formatting, or it could be a new edition that differs from what you had before.

Before moving to the guides, please keep in mind that ebooks from Amazon are DRM-ed. You won’t be able to read them on any other app or device. Or, to put it differently, you will be able after you get rid of the DRM layer.

Tips shared below will let you bring the books you purchased in Amazon’s Kindle Store to you computer – just in case something wrong happens on the other side.

Back up Kindle books using Kindle e-reader

This tip works for anyone who owns a Kindle e-reader. It’s a quite useful idea to get access to the ebook library even when you don’t have access to the internet.

Also, it’s good if you want to add to your Kindle – and therefore, Kindle cloud library – the books that you acquired from other sites. We’ve got the extended list of the sites that offer  free Kindle ebooks from the public domain .

There are two steps to back up Kindle ebooks via Kindle e-reader:

  • Connect the Kindle to your computer via USB cable.
  • Find the folder containing the books and copy it to disc.

1. Connect the Kindle to your computer with a USB cable

When you connect the Kindle to your computer, either PC or Mac, it will appear as an external drive. Open the drive icon, and locate the folder named “documents”.

Back up Kindle books using Kindle e-reader

Among other files types, the folder contains files in .azw format. It’s a .mobi file, protected with Amazon’s own DRM.

2. Copy the folder to a desired destination

Drag the “documents” folder to a desired place on your disc. You can also copy it to any cloud service you use, like Dropbox or Google Drive.

These cloud services are different from the cloud served by the Amazon. The files there are yours, and no one will change or update them if you don’t allow it.

Things to remember

Please keep in mind that you’ll copy only the files that are stored on the Kindle e-reader , and not the ones archived in the cloud.

To back up all the books from your Kindle library, you’ll first need to download them to the Kindle e-reader, which may take some time.

Back up Kindle books using Kindle desktop app

Using Kindle desktop app is convenient for Kindle users who don’t own an e-reader, and use mobile apps (iOS, Android) to read the ebooks.

It’s also good for Kindle e-reader owners who keep most of their books not on the e-reader but in the cloud.

There are four steps to back up Kindle books via Kindle desktop app:

  • Download the Kindle desktop application (there are versions for PC and Mac).
  • Download the books from the cloud to the app.
  • Locate the folder with Kindle books on your computer.
  • Copy it to disc.

1. Download the Kindle desktop app

The Kindle application lets you not only manage, but also read Kindle books on the computer. It’s available for the following systems:

  • Kindle for Windows 7, XP and Vista
  • Kindle for Windows 8
  • Kindle for Mac

When you go to free Kindle apps page on Amazon and click on the Download button, the version that fits the operating system of your computer will start downloading immediately.

Back up Kindle books - download the Kindle app from Amazon

After instaling the app, open it and sign in with your Amazon credentials.

2. Download the books from the cloud

In the app, in the Library  view on the left, you’ll see how many books you have in your Kindle cloud library. There are three sections:

  • All items – how many books you have in your Kindle account in total,
  • Downloaded items – how many books you have on the disc of your PC or Mac computer,
  • Archived items – these books are stored in the Kindle cloud, and not downloaded to the computer.

Each book that’s not on your computer has a cloud icon in the bottom right corner.

Back up Kindle books - how to spot the archived books

To download the book (on Mac), either double-click on the book cover or select “Download” from a Ctrl+Click menu.

Back up Kindle books using Kindle desktop app

There is no option to download the Kindle books in bulk. You’ll have to do it title by title, but with the double-click, it’s pretty fast.

Please have in mind that just like with Kindle e-reader, you’ll have to download all the books from the archive to the Kindle app, if you want to back up all of them.

3. Locate the folder with downloaded books

During installation, Kindle desktop app creates a folder where all future downloads will be stored.

Below there are paths to find that folder:

  • Mac ⇢ ~/Library/Containers/com.amazon.Kindle/Data/Library/Application Support/Kindle/My Kindle Content
  • Windows 7, XP, Vista  ⇢ C: / Users / Your User ID / Documents / My Kindle Content
  • Windows 8  ⇢ C: / Users / Your User ID / AppData / Local / Amazon / Kindle / application / content

I tested the directory on the Mac computer. For details on Windows, please read this Kindle forum .

Big magic: creative living beyond fear.

by ELIZABETH GILBERT

Once upon a time, there was a man named Jack Gilbert, who was not related to me – unfortunately for me.

Jack Gilbert was a great poet, but if you’ve never heard of him, don’t worry about it. It’s not your fault. He never much cared about being known. But I knew about him, and I loved him dearly from a respectful distance, so let me tell you about him.

Jack Gilbert was born in Pittsburgh in 1925 and grew up in the midst of that city’s smoke, noise, and industry. He worked in factories and steel mills as a young man, but was called from an early age to write poetry. He answered the call without hesitation. He became a poet the way other men become monks: as a devotional practice, as an act of love, and as a lifelong commitment to the search for grace and transcendence. I think this is probably a very good way to become a poet. Or to become anything, really, that calls to your heart and brings you to life.

How to Transfer Books from Kindle to Computer? [And Back!]

Disclosure: This post may contain affiliate links. – meaning I may get a commission if you decide to purchase through my links, at no additional cost to you.

Let’s face it! At some point, there comes a time when we feel the need to connect our Kindle to a computer; either to back up the existing collection of books or to transfer books!

Irrespective of whether you plan to purchase a new Kindle and transfer books to it, or whether you want to have a copy of all your books on your computer, one thing that we definitely need to know is – how to transfer books from Kindle to a computer?

The easiest way to transfer books from your Kindle to a computer is to use a USB cable. Connect your Kindle to a computer. Open the “Kindle” drive on your computer. Then, open the “documents” folder, and copy the books from this folder to your computer.

This article will help you understand how to connect your Kindle to a PC or a Mac. You’ll also get to learn what is the best way to transfer books to your computer. Plus, in the end, we will talk about how to transfer books back to a Kindle irrespective of which model you have!

So, let’s get started!

Can Kindle Books be Transferred?

Well, by now you probably would have guessed that you can transfer Kindle books from one device to another .

In fact, there are several ways in which you can do that. In my other article on how to transfer Kindle books , I’ve talked about all the different methods. Plus, I’ve also shared the best method specifically for each device (Android, iPad, iPhone, etc)!

So, make sure to check out the other article for complete details!

For this article, we are going to focus on how to transfer books from a Kindle to a computer and vice-versa.

How to Connect Kindle to a Computer?

In order to transfer books from a Kindle to a computer, one of the first things that we need to know is how to connect a Kindle to a computer.

To connect a Kindle to a computer, you will need a micro-USB to USB cable. Connect the micro-USB (smaller port) part of the cable to your Kindle, and the other end to a USB port of your computer. When connected, your Kindle will display the message “Your Kindle is in USB drive mode”.

It is rather odd, but Kindle still works on fairly old technology when it comes to cables. I mean, who has a micro-USB cable lying around in the house anymore! Good thing is, you can easily get a micro-USB to USB-A cable for PC for quite cheap on Amazon!

If you are a Mac user, you will find this extremely frustrating as not only is it difficult to find a cable with a micro-USB port, but when you do find one, you realize that your Mac only uses USB-C ports! I’d recommend getting a micro-USB to USB-C cable for Mac from Amazon (which is also thankfully quite inexpensive!)

download kindle books to pc

Once you have the required cable with you, connect it the way it is shown in the image above. Make sure that you connect the smaller micro-USB port of the cable at the bottom of your Kindle next to the power button (the same port that is used for charging the Kindle).

Attach the other end of the cable to the computer. Once this is done, you will notice that the screen on your Kindle changes and give a message stating that “Your Kindle is in USB drive mode”.

How to Transfer Kindle Books to a Computer?

There are actually a couple of different methods you can use to transfer Kindle books to your computer.

We’ll take a look at both methods one by one.

Method 1 – Transfer Kindle Books to a Computer via USB?

Perhaps the fastest method of transferring books from your Kindle to a computer is by using a USB cable.

I’d recommend using the Calibre app to transfer books to your computer. Calibre is open-source software and completely free to use. It allows you to maintain the book library, push books to your device easily, edit metadata, book cover, book ratings, and much more!

Using the calibre book management app is a topic for another article. I’ll try to write the detailed steps and link it back to this article! If you don’t see the link, use the search function on this site to see if the article exists.

Meanwhile, let us understand how to transfer Kindle books to a computer. Depending on whether you are using a PC or a Mac, the steps for transferring books to your computer may vary. Rest assured, I’ll cover the steps for both PC and Mac in this article.

Transfer Kindle Books to a PC via USB

Once you’ve connected your Kindle to the PC using a USB cable (as per the steps mentioned earlier in the article), you can now begin transferring the files. Here’s what you need to do –

Step 1 – Open the Kindle Drive

download kindle books to pc

You’ll see a “Kindle Drive” show up on your computer just like “C” or “D” drive on your computer. Simply double-click on it to show its contents.

Once the Kindle drive is open, locate the “ documents ” folder on it. This folder contains all the books visible on your Kindle device.

Step 2 – Locate and Copy Your Kindle Books

Now, select all the books that you wish to transfer from the Kindle to your computer. If you wish to transfer all the books, click on any one book and press “Ctrl+A”. This will select all the books.

You can also select the books individually by holding the “Ctrl” key on your keyboard and clicking on the book.

Once you’ve chosen the books, copy the books. You can either press “Ctrl+C” to copy the selected books. Alternatively, right-click on the selected books, and from the options click on “ copy “.

Step 3 – Paste the Books on Your Computer

Now, navigate to the folder on your computer or create a new folder. Once the folder is open, simply paste the books that you just copied. You can either right-click and select the “ Paste ” option. Alternatively, you can use the keyword combination “Ctrl+V” to paste the books.

Step 4 – Safely Eject Your Kindle Device

Once you’re done transferring the books, make sure that you eject the Kindle drive properly. This will prevent your files on Kindle from getting corrupted.

Right-click on the “Kindle” drive once again. From the options that appear, click on “ Eject “.

Transfer Kindle Books to a Mac via USB

Transferring books from your Kindle to a Mac via a USB drive works in a similar fashion. However, since the interface is different from that of Windows, it is easy to get confused. Nevertheless, we’ll cover the steps in detail below –

download kindle books to pc

Once you’ve connected the Kindle to your Mac, you will see a new drive appear on your desktop as shown at the top-right corner of the screen in the image above (drive can also be accessed using the “Finder”).

Once you open the “Kindle” drive, locate the “ documents ” folder and open it by double-clicking on it.

Step 2 – Locate and Copy the Kindle Books

Now select all the books that you wish to transfer. You can hold down the “Command” key on your keyboard and individually click on the book that you wish to transfer.

Once you have the books selected, right-click on any one of them and from the options click on “ Copy “.

You can also use the “Cmd+C” shortcut to copy the books.

Step 3 – Paste the Books on Your Mac

Now open a new folder on your Mac. Right-click on the folder and from the options that appear, click on “ Paste “. Alternatively, you can press the “Cmd+V” keys to paste.

Step 4 – Eject the Kindle Device

Once the transfer of books is complete, right-click on the Kindle drive, and from the options, click on “ Eject “.

This will safely eject your Kindle from the computer and prevent the loss of any data.

Method 2 – Download Books from Your Amazon Content Library

If you don’t have access to a USB cable, or you don’t wish to go through the hassle of connecting your Kindle to a computer, or perhaps your computer just refuses to detect your Kindle device, there is another way to transfer books from your Kindle to your computer.

You can also transfer books to your computer from your Amazon account.

Here’s how to do that –

Step 1 – Open the “Manage Your Content & Devices” Section on Amazon

download kindle books to pc

Firstly, log in to your Amazon account that is associated with your Kindle device. Then, hover over your account name, and click on the “ Content & Devices ” link (as shown in the image above).

Step 2 – Select the Books and Download

download kindle books to pc

The page should open the content library by default. If not, make sure that you click on the “Content” section from the top bar.

Then, select the book that you wish to transfer to your computer. Next, click on the “ More Actions ” button. From the dropdown that appears, click on the “ Download & transfer via USB “.

The book will get downloaded to your computer!

The only drawback with this process is that you will only be able to download books that you have purchased using your Amazon account. You won’t be able to access the books that you bought from other platforms.

How to Transfer Books to Your Kindle from a Computer?

If you have books that you wish to read on your Kindle but they are currently on your computer, there are ways you can transfer them to your device.

There are actually two methods that you can use. Let me share both methods with you below –

Method 1 – Transfer Books to Kindle from Computer via USB

The first obvious method is to transfer the books to your Kindle using a USB cable.

The overall process is similar to that of transferring books from your Kindle to a computer. Just that, you will now be copying the files from your Kindle instead of your computer.

Nevertheless, here is the step-by-step process to transfer books to your Kindle from your computer via USB –

  • Connect your Kindle to a computer – make sure you have the correct cable and follow the steps that I’ve mentioned earlier in the article.
  • Open the folder that contains the books that you wish to transfer to your Kindle
  • Copy the books that you wish to transfer
  • Open the Kindle drive on your computer and navigate to the “documents” folder
  • Paste the books to the documents folder on your Kindle
  • Once the transfer is complete, right-click on the “Kindle” drive, and select the “Eject” option.

In case you need any visual references, I’d request that you go through the previous section once again.

Method 2 – Transfer Books to a Kindle From a Computer Wirelessly

If you don’t have access to a USB cable, you can also send the books to a Kindle from your computer. This method applies to both your Kindle books as well as other books that you may not have purchased from Amazon. But, it is predominantly used for the latter.

You will need to use the Send-to-Kindle email address for this process. I’ve written a detailed guide on how to identify your Send-to-Kindle email address and send the books via email . Make sure you check out that article for a step-by-step process with images.

Here’s what you need to do to transfer books to a Kindle from your computer wirelessly –

  • Identify your Send-to-Kindle email adress
  • Add your email address to the “Approved” email list from Amazon
  • Compose a new email. Enter your send-to-Kindle email address in the recipient field.
  • Attach books to your email
  • Send the email

The books will be delivered to your respective device shortly. If, for some reason, the process doesn’t work, here’s a troubleshooting guide on how to identify the issues and fix them when the send-to-kindle email is not working.

How to Transfer Books From Kindle Fire to a Computer?

To transfer books from your Kindle Fire, connect it to a computer using a USB cable. On the device, give permission to access the storage of your Kindle Fire. Then, open the Kindle drive from the “My Computer” section. Open the “Internal Storage” folder and then “Books” to access your books.

The Kindle drive will appear usually where other USB drives appear on your computer. It can normally be seen under the “Computer” or “My Computer” section.

Sometimes, you may be asked to enter the password of your device to provide access to the Kindle drive once it is connected to the computer.

How to Transfer Books to a Kindle Fire from Mac?

To transfer books from your Kindle Fire to a Mac (or reverse), you will need to first download the “Android File Transfer” software on your Mac. Then, connect the Kindle Fire to your Mac using a USB cable, locate the “Books” folder inside the “Internal Storage” folder, and transfer the books.

The Android File Transfer utility app can be easily installed on your Mac. It is completely free to use and is necessary to transfer any files from or to your device from a Mac.

Once you install the app on your Mac, the folder will automatically open the internal storage of your Kindle once it is connected using a compatible USB cable.

If you are still unsure of how to transfer files from Kindle Fire, check out this video from Amazon that guides you through the process.

This wikiHow teaches you how to access your library of Kindle books using the Kindle Cloud Reader and the Kindle Desktop App. The Cloud Reader allows you to read books from any device with an internet connection, and also gives you the option to download books for offline use. If you prefer installing an app, you can download Kindle's Desktop app and use it to download and read any book in your library. You'll need an active Amazon account and at least one Kindle book linked to your account to use either version of the Reader.

Using Kindle Cloud Reader

Step 1 Go to https://read.amazon.com...

  • If it's your first time signing in, you'll be prompted to set up Kindle Cloud Reader for offline reading. If you want to be able to read books without internet access, click Get Started Now to set this up.

Step 3 Click a book in your library.

  • If you want to be able to download books to your computer and were not prompted to set up offline reading, click the Downloaded tab at the top-center part of the screen, and then follow the on-screen instructions.
  • To download a book to your computer, right-click its title and select Download & Pin Book . Downloaded books are saved to the Downloaded section.

Step 4 Use the arrows to page through the book.

  • If you want to move to rapidly move to a different location in the book, move the mouse cursor up to the top of the page to bring up the progress bar at the bottom, and then drag the slider to the desired page.
  • You can also browse the book's contents and sections by hovering the mouse cursor over the top of the page and clicking the open book button.
  • To search for something in the book, type your term(s) into the "Search" bar at the top-right corner of the page—if you don't see it, move the mouse cursor to the top of the page to make it appear.

Step 5 Click the Aa button to change the book's appearance.

  • Click the bookmark icon on the toolbar to bookmark the current page.
  • To highlight or word or set of words, select the words with the mouse, and then click the Highlight option that appears.
  • To add a notation, highlight the appropriate words and click the Note option that appears. Type the text of your note and select Save .

Step 7 Click the synchronize button when you're finished reading.

Step 4 Right-click a book and select Download.

  • Look at the "Library" panel on the left of your screen. Any books you download to the computer will be accessible in the Downloaded section of this panel.

Step 5 Double-click a downloaded book to open it.

  • The first time you open the book, you'll be prompted to do a quick tutorial. Click Show Me to check it out.

Step 6 Use the arrows to page through the book.

  • To page quickly through the book, drag the slider at the bottom of the screen forward or backward.
  • To go to a specific page or section, click the Go to menu in the toolbar, and then make your selection.

Step 7 Click the expand button to toggle-on full-screen mode.

  • To exit full screen, press the F11 key, the Esc key, or click the X at the bottom-center part of the page.

Step 8 Click the Aa icon to change the appearance of the book.

  • To highlight a word or set of words, select the words, and then click one of the colored circles at the top of the context menu that appears.

You don't need an Amazon Kindle to read Kindle books. With the Kindle app for Windows, you can enjoy the latest bestsellers and literary classics on your laptop or desktop computer. Here's how to read Kindle books on a PC.

What is the Kindle App for PC?

Kindle for PC comes with the same features as Amazon's popular e-book reader. You can place bookmarks, highlight text, and add notes. You can also adjust the text size and page formatting to your liking. Plus, Kindle for PC is compatible with most versions of Windows, including Windows 7 through 10, Windows 2000, Windows Me, Windows XP, and Windows 98.

There is an older version of the Kindle reader app called Kindle for Windows 8, but it's no longer supported. You can use it, but consider upgrading to Kindle for PC to enjoy new features and updates.

How to Create an Amazon Account

If you don't have one, create an Amazon account to purchase and read Kindle books.

Visit amazon.com .

Move your mouse cursor over Accounts & Lists in the upper-right corner of the page, but do not select it.

Select Start Here from the drop-down menu, located below the Sign In button.

Fill out the registration form. You must provide your name, an email address, and a password for your account. When finished, select Create Your Amazon Account .

You're redirected to the Amazon home page. Select Accounts & Lists to be taken to your account page.

You can now download free Kindle books. If you want to purchase books, set up a payment method. Select Payment Options on your account page and provide the requested information to make purchases on Amazon.

How to Download Amazon Kindle for Windows

No matter which version of Windows you have, the steps for setting up the Kindle for PC app are the same:

Visit the Kindle for PC download page and select Add to Cart .

Choose your payment method and select Proceed to Checkout .

Select Place Your Order .

On the next page, select Your Digital Items .

Next to Kindle for PC , select Download .

Open the file when it finishes downloading. Kindle for PC should install automatically.

Kindle for PC appears on the desktop or in the apps list inside the Amazon folder. When you open it, you're prompted to provide the email address and password for your Amazon account.

How to Read Kindle Books on Your PC

If you have a Kindle, or if you have the Kindle app installed on another device, you can download any books you purchased. Your bookmarks, notes, and progress should all transfer over. Select All under the Library options, then select the cover of the book you would like to read on your PC.

Use the drop-down menu in the upper-left corner of the app window to sort your books by title or author, or enter a title into the search bar.

How to Purchase Kindle Books for Your PC

Follow these steps to buy a new Kindle book on your PC.

While connected to the internet, select Kindle Store in the upper-right corner of the app window.

You're taken to the Amazon website in your default browser, where you can browse thousands of titles.

The Kindle Store has plenty of free books. Check out the Amazon Cheap Reads for Kindle list.

On the product page, select Buy Now with 1-Click to deliver the title you want to all your devices.

Here are a few tips to help you become proficient with the Kindle for PC app:

  • Turn pages by selecting or swiping the right or left side of the screen. Alternatively, use the left and right arrow keys on the keyboard.
  • To adjust the font and page layout, select Aa near the top of the app window.
  • To set a bookmark, select or tap the upper-right corner of the page. A blue symbol appears, indicating the bookmark was successfully placed.
  • To make a note, right-click anywhere on the page, or press and hold if using a tablet. Select the index card symbol in the left pane to create flashcards.
  • To view your bookmarks, highlights, flashcards, and notes, select Show Notebook in the upper-right corner.

There's a similar Kindle App for Mac and a Kindle app for Chrome that lets you read books in a browser. See the Kindle apps help page for more details about how to access your books on any device.

Left your Kindle reader behind? Not a problem---you can still read your e-books on a nice big screen, without losing out on features like notes, bookmarks, and highlights . Here's how to read Kindle books on any Windows 10 PC, Mac, or desktop web browser.

First, let's talk about Kindle Cloud Reader. This is Amazon's online e-book reader that gives you access to all the books that you have bought using your Amazon Kindle account.

To get started, visit the Kindle Cloud Reader website in a desktop browser on your Windows, Mac, or Linux computer. Here, log in with your Amazon account.

Sign in to Kindle Cloud Reader

Instantly, you will see all the e-books from your Kindle Library (except for the documents uploaded to your Kindle account).

Now, just click on an e-book to instantly open it in the browser. If you were already reading this book on another device, Kindle Cloud Reader will pick up from where you left off.

Open a Book in Kindle Cloud Reader

You'll see a toolbar at the top with options to add bookmarks and notes. You can also view the table of contents from here.

Kindle Cloud Reader With UI

The entire book-reading interface is customizable. Click the "Aa" button to change the font, font size, background, spacing, and more.

Kindle Cloud Reader is great when you're in a pinch. But if you plan to read books regularly on your computer, it's best to download the dedicated Kindle app for Windows or Mac.

First, open the Kindle Apps page and click the "Download for PC & Mac" button to download the app.

Change Page Width in Kindle App

New to Amazon?

How to Download Free Amazon Kindle eBooks to Your PC

Even if you don't have a Kindle, you can still download free Kindle ebooks to read on your PC. This article eases you through the process.

The Kindle is a fantastic platform for book lovers, even if you prefer physical copies . For around $100, you get a device that lets you read at night, lets you purchase books instantly, and lasts for weeks on a single charge.

Although there are several Kindle models to fit any budget , perhaps you want to experience an eBook before buying or don't have the money to purchase a device now . You'll be pleased to know that Amazon provides a free Kindle app for Windows and Mac that lets you read right from your PC.

Let's work through the process of using this software and finding some free books you can enjoy...

1. Download the Kindle App and Sign In

First, you'll need to install a free copy of the Kindle app for Windows or Mac. Head to the Kindle app page , click Download for PC & Mac , and the site will automatically grab the right version for your operating system. You can also use the Android or iOS apps if you prefer. Once it's installed, open the file and wait for it to load up.

Next you'll need to enter your Amazon account credentials. Note that if you use two-factor authentication (2FA) on your account , the app won't let you sign in and you'll continually be asked to solve a CAPTCHA . To fix this, enter your password immediately followed by your current 2FA code in the password field. This isn't explained anywhere in the app, but it works. If you don't have an Amazon account, you can create one here.

2. Find Some Free Books

If you own any books on Amazon , you'll find them in the All section of your library. When you want to start reading these, double-click one to open it. You can also right-click a book and choose Download to save it on your device for offline reading .

kindle-windows-app

Assuming you don't have any books yet, let's go looking for some. You can click the Kindle Store link at the top-right of the window to open the Kindle book storefront in your default browser.

However, since we're looking for free books , you should visit the Cheap Reads for Kindle page first. Here, Amazon gathers the most popular free books in several categories. You'll find classic reads that are out of copyright from authors like Charles Dickens and Jules Verne, but there are plenty of science fiction, romance, and thriller books on this page as well.

If you'd like to narrow your search, go ahead and select a category, like Computers & Technology , on the left-hand side of the Kindle books homepage. Scroll down past the featured best-sellers, and look for the Sort by: drop-down box a bit down the page.

Change it from Featured to Price: Low to High to show all free books in that genre first. We found some well-rated books on JavaScript, information security, and Java programming for free in our testing.

Once you've found a book that takes your fancy, click Buy now with 1-Click to claim it. If you have multiple devices, you can choose which one you'd like it sent to. No matter which one you pick, though, the book should show up in your Library on the Kindle app moments later. You can click the Refresh button next to Library to manually sync if the new book doesn't show up.

Amazon notes that free books may vary in quality and Kindle formatting, so don't surprised if the formatting looks a little off.

3. Read Your Books!

Double-click the new book in your Library to open it. The interface is similar to a PDF reader , with several shortcuts that help you customize your reading view. Use the left and right arrow keys to move between pages, and click the Full Screen button to maximize screen real estate for reading.

kindle-book-example

The Text Options button lets you adjust the font, font size, words per line, brightness, and color modes. If you prefer two-column reading, click the Columns button next to this. Go to is a shortcut tool that lets you instantly skip to any page. You can bookmark a page for later by clicking the Bookmark button in the top-right.

A couple of extra features round off the Kindle app's bag of tricks. On the left sidebar, you'll find buttons for Table of Contents , Search , Notebook , and Flashcards . The Notebook holds your bookmarks, and you can even create some flash cards from your bookmarks. You can also double-click any word to see its definition , color-code it for later, or add a note to it.

Do You Like Reading on Your PC?

Within just a few minutes, anyone can start enjoying free books on their computer. While you probably won't find your favorite books in the free section, there's a chance you'll dig up a hidden treasure. If you're never read books digitally before, this is a risk-free way to give it a shot. It doesn't paint a perfect picture of the Kindle experience, however. There are pros and cons to using the app on your phone or computer, so bigtime readers will probably prefer a real Kindle.

Now that you have access to the Kindle ecosystem, check out how to find unlimited content for it !

What do you think of reading books on your computer? Does using the Kindle app make you want to own a real Kindle? Please let us know what free books you're reading through the Kindle app down in the comments!

A Kindle is a great device for avid readers, especially those who do a lot of traveling or don’t want to go out and buy physical books. But even if you don’t have a Kindle, you can still read Kindle books with one of the Kindle apps available on your personal computer or smartphone. Here, we’ll show you how to read Kindle books on a PC.

Key Takeaways:

  • There’s no Kindle device required to read e-books purchased with your Amazon account.
  • You can access books from your Kindle library through the Kindle for PC app, the Kindle Cloud Reader or other third-party reader apps.
  • In addition to the Kindle app for PC, there’s also one available for Mac as well as an iOS and Android app.

Although reading Kindle books on your PC is simple, the reading experience can’t compare to an actual Kindle. If you’re thinking of getting one, you can head over to our Kindle model comparison to untangle the confusing pricing scheme and figure out which one suits you the best.

How to Read Kindle Books on PC With the Kindle App

The first and best way to read Kindle books on PC is to use the Kindle for PC app. In addition to allowing for offline reading, it also has all the key features of an actual Kindle. This includes the ability to highlight text, add notes, change font size, add bookmarks and read in full-screen mode.

Follow the steps below to install the application and connect it to your Amazon account. Although we’re using Windows as the example here, the instructions are almost identical on Mac.

Use a web browser to go to the Kindle app download page , select the Windows version and follow the on-screen instructions during installation.

Once installed, the app should open automatically and prompt you for your email address and password. Enter the information and click “sign-in.”

pc app login

Now that the app is installed and configured, you can read books on your computer.

How to Read Kindle Books With the Kindle Cloud Reader

If you don’t want to or can’t install the dedicated Windows PC app, then you can also use the Cloud Reader through any major web browser such as Internet Explorer and Firefox. As with the last section, these instructions are platform-agnostic and will work just as well on a Linux or Mac system.

Use a web browser to go to read.amazon.com , enter your account credentials and click “sign-in.”

Once you’re logged in to the Kindle Cloud Reader, all that remains is for you to start reading books. Simply double-tap or double-click any of them to start.

It’s worth bearing in mind that since it’s a web-based solution, you’ll only be able to use the Cloud Reader to read Kindle books when you’re online.

How to Download Books From Your Kindle Library

Finally, Amazon also lets you download Kindle books directly, provided you actually bought them and they weren’t borrowed through Kindle Unlimited or Prime Reading (check out our Prime Reading vs Kindle Unlimited comparison). This allows you to take the files, convert them, remove the DRM if needed and read the books with any third-party software such as the Calibre app.

Use a web browser to go to www.amazon.com and click the button in the top-right corner that says “hello, sign in.” Enter your Amazon account information to log in.

convert kindle login

Hover over the button you just used to log in that now shows your name, and select “content & devices” from the dropdown menu. Here, you should see a list of all the books you own through Amazon.

Find the book you want to download, click on “more actions” on the right-hand side and select “download & transfer via USB.” If the book has DRM, a pop-up will appear where you can select which Kindle or device it’s going to. Select one and click “download.”

Now that you have the file, you might have to strip the Kindle DRM. You can check out our Kindle DRM guide for instructions on how to remove DRM from files and our eBook format guide to convert them to other ebook formats such as EPUB or PDF files.

Final Thoughts

That’s it for our guide on how to read Amazon Kindle books on a Windows system. Although the Cloud Reader is certainly convenient, with the Kindle app installed you’ll be able to enjoy both online and offline reading without having to worry about staying connected to the internet.

What did you think of our guide? Do you now feel like you understand how to read e-books online or on your Windows or Mac computer without an Amazon Kindle device? Did we miss an alternative approach, or were there any steps that you thought were unclear? Let us know in the comments below. Thank you for reading.

Yes, you can read e-books using the Kindle desktop app, the web-based Cloud Reader or third-party e-reading software. However, the latter requires you to manually download the e-book files from Amazon.

Yes, you can still use the Kindle Cloud Reader which is accessible through a web browser. If you’ve purchased the book you want to read, then you can also download the e-book file and load it into any third-party e-reading software.

You can read your Kindle e-books in any web browser by following the steps below for logging in to your Amazon account and accessing the Kindle Cloud Reader.

This article does not mention that books published in 2023 onward are not downloadable on older versions of Kindle for PC and what version Kindle for PC must be in order to download books from Amazon.

My old Kindle for PC was disabled by Amazon, I was pushed to download the new Kindle version for PC. When that was installed, it overhauled my complete Kindle library, adding weird extensions to my book files and practically removed every book file and replaced them with links. I too had thousands of books, but now I only have links. Even Calibre can’t do anything with links. It needs a file to convert to epub, html or even to remove DRM. How am I supposed to read my books now? I don’t have an actual kindle. I have a Kobo who only reads epubs. So I used calibre to convert all Amazon’s azw files. Now I can’t do that anymore. I bought several ebooks on amazon in 2023, but I don’t have the files anymore, just links.

I just want to change the VISA card I use to charge new kindle books to read.

I have the kindle for PC app but the file isn’t on it. I tried “Deliver to Device”. It said “sent” but it wasn’t. I tried “Download and transfer via USB.” IT tells you there’s no device OR “get the Kindle for PC app” – which I have! Utterly useless.

My Kindle seems to be getting worn out after a lot of use. Thought I’d investigate reading on my laptop as a tempory measure. Good grief, after reading these comments I’m not going to even go there!

I have purchased and received 3 kindle books in my kindle library. However, I cannot acces one of them, “The Missing Sister.” It refers me to the library repeatedly.

From the comments I’ve read here, I’m afraid to go to WIN-11 and I’m truly surprised at how reluctant Amazon is to create a solution that everyone can utilize. It seems that no matter which way you turn there is an issue resulting from half-thought solutions to a problem on someone else’s device type. This is totally reminiscent of the 1960’s. I don’t mind showing my age, but it sure pains me to see the same problems we had 50 years ago remain unsolved.
