Explore the different creative writing courses you can take while studying abroad.
1. Literature and Creative Writing: How to Read Like a Writer
An interesting approach to this literature course requires students to develop skills for reading literature with an intent to improve their own writing. As both a reading and writing-intensive course, you will get to explore many literary works while practicing your own unique writing style and implementing new skills.
The "How to Read Like a Writer” course is perfect for you as you begin your journey in creative writing. You will get to focus on the reading of the literature not just as an audience member, but as a fellow writer. Examine these beautiful literary works from the view of the practice of fiction writing, and use their literary cues and techniques to foster your fiction writing skills.
This course will help you utilize literary works to improve your own writing as you study in Italy
2. Creative Writing Workshop: Mixed Genre
The Creative Writing Mixed Genre course ( CW 205 ) at John Cabot University provides an introduction to the main elements of creative writing. Taking this course while you study English in Rome will allow you to practice writing fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and stage/screenwriting. Whether or not you are majoring in English Literature , you will gain valuable insight into the historic origins of writing techniques while in the historic setting of Rome.
This JCU course dives deep into the major issues of literary aesthetics. Every piece of literature uses literary techniques to achieve a unique writing aesthetic that draws from different philosophical ideas. Breaking down pieces of literature to probe into these major issues creates a deeper understanding of the work, as well as a new appreciation for your own creative writing style and what may influence your own work. Getting your feet wet in a number of creative writing styles allows you to pinpoint which ones you enjoy most and are the most comfortable with.
3. Creative Writing Workshop: Writing the Eternal City While You Study in Italy
The “Writing the Eternal City” course is an interdisciplinary writing workshop that uses the city of Rome as its muse while instructors offer guidance in several genres of creative writing. You will examine a number of works inspired by the Eternal City while learning how to evaluate literature in the light of a historic precedent.
While paying due attention to Rome’s beauty, the workshop will also have you explore the ancient city’s contemporary contradictions that writers draw upon for their pieces. You will have the opportunity to identify where these writers both perpetuate and dismantle certain myths about Rome while you study in Italy . Your final portfolio from this workshop will be filled with written interpretations in response to everything you’ve read and learned about the Eternal City.

Creative Writing in Tuscany
This program will transport a traditional creative writing fiction workshop and seminar examining the literature of Italy to the setting of Tuscany. Students will become better acquainted with the internal workings of storytelling and the vast array of tools available to them as a writer of fiction. You will look closely at language, sentences, narrative voice, point of view, character, detail and structure in the workshop course, and will pay particular attention to the role of setting, through a series of place-based writing exercises, inspired by the sights of Siena as well. You will also have the opportunity to explore how new surroundings can lead to fresh insights into one’s creative work.
With readings ranging across time from Ovid’s Metamorphoses to Hisham Matar’s recent memoir about writing (and living) in Italy, our goal is to place ourselves in that long line of artistic seekers, creating new work out of our Italian encounters, while also submitting ourselves to the knowledge and vision of the people who call Italy home.
The program will take place in the beautiful city of Siena, with excursions to Florence and the Medieval towns of San Gimignano and Montepulciano. You will be able to visit the Uffizi Gallery and other cultural landmarks, incorporating the art of the Italian masters into your writing.

Alma College MFA in Creative Writing Program Announces Italy Residency
ALMA — In the spirit of powerful authors such as Lord Byron, Henry James and Daphne du Maurier, the Alma College Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Writing program is going to Italy.
A residency at the Veneto region of Italy, including the historic city of Venice and its surrounding countryside, is scheduled for Jan. 4-14, 2024, program director Sophfronia Scott announced this week. In Venice, Scott said, graduate student writers of poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction will learn what it means for their work to be influenced by a setting.
“I think writing about a place, which is something almost every writer does, is about more than just describing the setting,” said Scott, an award-winning author and essayist. “In order to truly write well about a place, you have to feel it. It has to get inside you. Writers tend to arrive to a point in their development where a place calls them — and not just for research, but to feel influenced by this place.
“It can take a writer to another level. So, while students in this program may not choose to write about Venice specifically, they will learn what that idea means to them, and how they can tap into that experience when they write about places.”
Venice is one of the most perfectly preserved historic cities in Europe, with a sparkling literary reputation. Among the most famous works set in Venice are du Maurier’s “Don’t Look Now,” James’s “The Aspern Papers,” and William Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Venice.” The city was extremely influential to the works of American author Ernest Hemingway and was considered his home away from home.
Students will be joined not only by Scott and the MFA program’s renowned faculty, but also by Janet Simmonds, a travel guide and art historian. They will stay at the five-star Villa Franceschi Hotel , a family-owned resort located on a waterway that flows out to the Venetian Lagoon.
“Wandering the alleys and streets of Venice is a feast for the senses,” Simmonds said. “Shouting porters, fresh-baked pizza, the salty air of the sea, jostling crowds at Rialto, the smell of fresh paint at the Biennale and more. Life is here being lived in Venice as it has been for centuries. I can’t wait for students to see it.”
The itinerary is intentionally being left flexible for now, but among the activities students can expect to take part in are hearing from Italian authors and publishers, exploring the islands surrounding Venice and visiting the small towns of Asolo, Padova and Trieste to understand how they have influenced other writers.
The deadline to register for the upcoming Winter 2023 residency, which takes place Jan. 3-13, 2023, at the Ralph A. MacMullan Center in Roscommon, Michigan, has been extended to Nov. 30. The Summer 2023 residency is scheduled to take place June 15-25 at Alma College.
Tentative plans are in place to hold a Summer 2025 residency at the University of Oxford in Oxford, England, Scott said.

The Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology’s Cheryl Omolo emerged second, while Baraton University’s Julius Musya Kilonzo and Kisii University’s Nelson Gichuki managed third, fourth and fifth respectively.
Two University of Nairobi students have emerged victorious in a creative writing competition.
Asharami Synergy Kenya and the Sahara Group Foundation in 2023 organised a creative writing competition for university students in Kenya.
This was aimed at fostering greater understanding and participation of youth in climate action, energy transition discourse and sustainability.
Christened the 'Asharami Synergy Creative Writing Competition’, the initiative received 225 submissions from university students who sent in essays, poems and plays on “creating a sustainable path for Africa’s energy transition.”
The winning entries stood out for their creativity, originality, and ability to convey compelling messages capable of facilitating the participation of young Kenyans in Africa’s March towards Energy Access and Sustainability.
“This has been mission accomplished for Sahara Group Foundation and Asharami Synergy Kenya as our focus was to get youths in Kenya involved in the conversation around climate change and energy transition in Africa, especially seeing that they will bear the brunt of decisions made today,” Sahara Group Foundation Ejiro Gray said.
Gray said the entries’ quality indicated that they were on course to prepare Kenya youths for seamless generational sustainability.
Commending Sahara Group and Asharami Synergy Kenya for the initiative, KCA University’s deputy vice-chancellor, of research, innovation and outreach Prof. Vincent Onywera said “Climate change is a matter that calls for an inclusive engagement of all stakeholders leaving no one behind, so this creative writing competition for our youths is important because we must catch them young.”
Asharami Synergy Kenya operations supervisor Lavinah Gonah said Sahara Group was happy with the competition’s success.
Gonah commended all students who participated in the competitions.
“Asharami Synergy Kenya remains committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure Kenya becomes a leading voice in driving a just energy transition for Africa,” Gonah said.
He said Asharami Synergy Kenya in collaboration with the Sahara Group Foundation and Treedom had since commenced planting of 1,100 trees in Kenya to reduce carbon emissions.
“Today, winning this award has validated me as a creative writer. I thank Asharami Synergy for allowing me and many other students to truly express ourselves and contribute to the cause of creating sustainable solutions. Winning this award allows me to tap further into my creativity and be more vocal in environmental matters that affect Africa and knowing that as a youth I am at the forefront of fulfilling this mandate,” Nabalayo said.
“I’m happy to have won this competition put together by the Sahara Group and Asharami Synergy Kenya. This is a milestone for me, I am passionate about climate justice and climate change,” Major said.
Major said the competition was a step towards developing a clean Kenya and a clean Africa.
“These are steps that will lead towards clean energy and environmental sustainability,” Major said.
Cheryl said she was happy to emerge as one of the winners.
She said she intends to continue contributing her thoughts on sustainability on many more platforms.
“I am grateful to Asharami Synergy Kenya and the Sahara Group Foundation for this laudable initiative,” she said.
In line with Sahara Group’s dedication to celebrating and rewarding excellence, the top five winners received cash prizes, plaques, and certificates for their excellent performance. The joint winners received $500 each, while the third, fourth and fifth winners received $250, $150, and $100, respectively.
Asharami Synergy Kenya Limited is a frontline downstream company that contributes to economic growth in the nation by promoting access to reliable and clean energy solutions.

On the campus princeton student struck by train was creative writing director’s son.
Editor’s note: If you or someone you know may have suicidal thoughts, you can call the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline or chat online at 988lifeline.org .
The freshman who was struck and killed by the Dinky train on Feb. 16 is the son of Yiyun Li, according to a statement from the University . She joined the Princeton faculty in 2017 and is currently director of the Program in Creative Writing.
James Li ’27 was a Princeton High School graduate. His father is Dapeng Li, the statement said. New Jersey Transit is investigating and has not released the cause of death.
A lauded writer and novelist, Yiyun Li has written about her journey through depression and grief after her older son, Vincent Li, died by suicide when he was struck by a train in 2017. In 2022, The New York Times wrote that Yiyun Li had become “something of a beacon to those suffering beneath unbearable weight.”
James Li is the second freshman to die this academic year; Sophia Jones ’27 died by suicide on Nov. 29 . Seven Princeton students have died from various causes since May 2022.
The University statement listed resources that can help students right now, offered through Counseling and Psychological Services , the Office of Religious Life , the residential colleges, and the Graduate College. In an interview with PAW, CPS director Calvin Chin said: “I think for everyone in the University community, it’s really important right now to focus on whatever you can to take care of yourself.
“For some people it might mean reaching out to others for support. For other people it might mean distraction. For others it might mean journaling. And for still others it might mean reaching out to a professional counselor,” Chin said. “Really any means toward giving yourself some sense of peace and relief during this challenging time is absolutely appropriate and the right way to go.”
He also urged people to reach out to each other, both to get support and to offer it to others. “One thing that can be helpful when a tragedy like this happens is to just lean into the emotional support that you can get from other members of the community,” Chin said. “Finding ways to reach out to people who you either are concerned about or who you feel could benefit from a supportive talk or a supportive meeting is always a good thing.”
Students who want to talk to a professional counselor can walk into the McCosh Health Center from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, or they can call the CPS Cares Line around the clock at 609-258-3141. Faculty and staff can use Carebridge around the clock.
Chin said residential colleges and other groups on campus are planning events for people to gather and support each other, so students should watch for those announcements in their email over the coming days.
Right now, he said, “honor what it is that you need to take care of yourself, and reach out for help and resources when you need it.”

Creative Writing MFA Alumni Spotlight: Francisco Aragón ('03)
Published: February 20, 2024
Author: Paul Cunningham
"I was affiliated with [University of Notre Dame], but I wasn't teaching; I was a full-time arts administrator. I was able to cultivate more meaningful and substantive initiatives that led to a more national footprint. That was when I [and Letras Latinas] began to collaborate with the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Folger Shakespeare Library, the Poetry Society of America. I would be remiss if I didn't mention how crucial Letras Latinas' ties are with Notre Dame's Creative Writing program. We typically tap MFA students to introduce our visiting poets as well as conduct our oral history video interviews." — Francisco Aragón, Poets & Writers
"Letras Latinas' mission is to amplify and support our storytellers-poets, playwrights, fiction writers, essayists. As long as our community is producing storytellers, and as long as we live in an environment in which communities are battling being erased—think about the political climate we're currently in in the U.S., with the attempted banning of library books by LGBTQ and Black voices—I don't envision the scenario where it's 'mission accomplished'" — Francisco Aragón, Poets & Writers
