We had no capital and almost no experience, but after each small step we took, the next small step became obvious. Book Review Art Based Group Therapy: Theory and Practice, 2nd Edition by Bruce Moon, PhD, HLM, ATR-BC A Book, pp. 118-120. Review by Claire Polansky, Edited by Roselle O'Brien.

The majority of Jungian depth psychological analysis of kundalini has been hermeneutical in nature. Both C.G. Jung and James Hillman suggested that kundalini as an aspect of Eastern spiritual practice was not appropriate for Westerners. Yet experiences of kundalini appear to be occurring with increasing frequency for Westerners. This research explores how experiences of kundalini impacted five people in the United States, including the researcher herself. Using the methodology of Organic Inquiry the research provides stories from interviews, art and writing resulting from embodied active imagination work, and dreams recorded during the interview process. Specific areas of focus also included tracking synchronicities, and noting emotional and psychological challenges and reactions to experiences of kundalini. The research was conducted with the intention of answering the questions: In what ways might depth psychology be complementary to or supportive in understanding and integrating a kundalini experience? How might kundalini further inform depth psychology’s understanding about the effects of numinous experience on the personality? The findings showed that kundalini frequently brought psychological complexes to conscious awareness. Kundalini often acted as a transcendent function and synchronicities increased. It also appeared that for people with early childhood trauma, the psyche might initially experience kundalini as a threat. As an eros rather than logos way of knowing, kundalini offers depth psychologists a phenomenological perspective into how psyche may grapple with and be transformed by numinous experiences.

This is a lecture on using yoga to alleviate stress and achieve success. It has been given at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point.

Dissertation, University of British Columbia

Nané Jordan

This doctoral dissertation represents a qualitative inquiry into the lived experiences and practices of seven faculty and student alumni, the author included, within an accredited Women’s Spirituality Master of Arts (WSMA) degree program, located in the San Francisco Bay area. This graduate course of study originates from the grassroots North American women’s movement, and prepares women for leadership in the pluralistic global culture of the 21st Century. The woman-centred curriculum re-claims women’s history, pre-history, spiritual experience, social contributions and creative expressions by integrating scholarly research, feminist perspectives and analysis, goddesses, activism, ritual, spiritual practices, and the arts. Through individual and collective processes of self-inquiry, healing and transformation, faculty and students contribute to new knowledge and social practices that can holistically address local and global challenges of gender, social and ecological justice. This dissertation artfully illuminates intersections of spirituality and feminism in education that remain little known or understood. The study responds to calls made by North American scholars for inspiriting the academy by attending to the spiritual dimensions of human experience. The author posits the WSMA as being an exemplar of innovations of spirituality in higher education. Stories and practices woven into this dissertation document, communicate, and commune-with, faculty and students’ experiences of self- formation and authorization, search for meaning and understanding, gender, social, and ecological justice work, and the relational embodiment of spirit- and heart- centred learning and renewal. Throughout this text, the author navigates the complexity of her ongoing path as a scholar who claims Women’s Spirituality as a site of learning and research. Stories and practices are woven through the life-based, artistic material metaphor and gesture of “red thread” into themes of “Beginnings,” “Gifts,” and “New Philosophies.” The author engages narrative, auto/biographic, and arts-based research methodologies through life writing and oral history stories, her mixed-media textiles and performance art practice, and the research persona of the philosopher-midwife, drawn from her working background in lay midwifery of being with-woman. She weaves, performs, translates and transmits co-participants’ stories and practices of living Women’s Spirituality, and that of herself, as being the central bodies/body of this research text.

Book review and summary of “The creative visualization workbook: a practical exercise manual”

Introduction.

Shakti Gawain explains that this handbook of practical exercises complements her theoretical book entitled “Creative visualization techniques”. She recommends that we read it to understand some of the concepts. However, she tells us that the handbook can be read and used effectively on its own. There are also 2 audio recordings in English entitled: Creative visualization.

This practical exercise manual allows us to take our first steps in creative visualization in a straightforward, fun, and productive way.

There are various techniques to integrate creative visualization into everyday life so that it becomes second nature.

In the first part, we will look at the basic techniques.

Second part, we will learn to set clear and concise objectives.

Third part, we will understand how to realize and cleanse our negative thoughts.

Fourth part, we will be able to use the basic techniques for all areas of life.

Fifth part, we will see how to connect with her intuition, creativity, and positivity .

Together let’s discover these techniques that I have used unwaveringly. Each day they lead me to a more fulfilled life , of my choice.

Basic techniques of creative visualization

Creative visualization is how to imagine, as clearly and precisely as possible, what we want to achieve in our lives and how we want it to happen, in order to get a sense of how life would be if it were so.

This visualization can be done at any time of the day and can become a means to create positivity in all aspects of life.

Here are the 4 basic exercises , which are easy and effective and can be put into practice immediately:

The pink bubble technique

Sit or lie down, relax and imagine that what you want in your life has already happened, visualize it clearly and the feelings associated with it.

Then place this image in a pink bubble , the color associated with the heart, and let the bubble escape and float in the universe. It symbolizes that you have let go and have confidence in the opportunities that life offers.

This can be done once or daily with the same image.

Written statement

Write a positive statement about yourself and express it in the present as: “I complete the exercises in the practical exercise handbook”.

By writing this statement, be aware of the meaning of each word. Rewrite it several times a day.

If there are fears, doubts or negativity in your mind when you do this, write them all down and create positive statements to overcome them.

Here is an example of fear:

“ I’m afraid I don’t have the time .”

And here is an example to neutralize this fear:

“ I will make the time to complete the exercises in the practical exercise manual .”

This exercise can be done several times a day over a few days until negative thoughts are erased.

The ideal picture

©coco – Fotolia

Choose a major goal , short or long term.

On a piece of paper, write an “ideal scenario” with a very detailed description , as if you were in the process of experiencing it.

At the bottom of this page, include and say the following statement:

“This dream of mine, or something even better, is now fulfilled in the best possible way and everyone will benefit.”

You can then look at this ideal scenario, read it again, and think about it regularly.

Sometimes people even forget about their ideal scenario before they realise that it has actually come true!

Treasure map

Similar to a blueprint, draw or paste images that fit your objective.

Each objective or sphere of life can have a different treasure map or you can put all of it on the same treasure map.

To give it even more impact, you can add a photo or drawing of yourself.

The images must be accurate, in order to properly reflect the dreams.

Put this treasure map where you will often see it.

Don’t worry about the logistics or how you get things done, it’s the final goal that must be portrayed in a way that is both achievable and positive.

A symbol of the power of the universe, such as a sun, a Buddha or a God, can be put on the map.

Underneath your treasure map, also include and say this statement:

At the end of this first part, there are blank pages provided for the following exercises:

  • Describe “your ideal scenario”.
  • Make “your treasure map”
  • Write “your statements”.
  • Cleanse “your negative thoughts”

This chapter of The Creative Visualisation Workbook invites us to reflect upon our short and long-term objectives and to assess them.

We all have objectives, goals, ambitions, and dreams. Even if our goal is not specific or simply to live life in the present moment, it is still a goal.

If you are inclined to want to control everything, just try to relax and go with the flow.

If you are prone to disorganization, set priorities in your objectives and act on them.

What you need to know about, when you develop objectives :

  • For short-term objectives: be realistic , i.e. define objectives that are easily achievable in order to build self-confidence.
  • For long-term goals: be optimistic , think big and let your imagination run wild.
  • Think about the ultimate goal : not the steps in-between.
  • Be relaxed and let go , let things develop at their own pace.

Bear in mind that some of your goals and aspirations may change, so be flexible.

To achieve these goals, the most important thing is to try different things , have faith in your imagination and your ability to be creative.

As with the written statements, write them in the present.

Short-term objectives:

  • I open a savings account and pay 100 euros into it.
  • I walk outside for 1 hour a day and it relaxes me.
  • And, I feel more in touch with my feelings and I can express my emotions.

Long-term objectives:

  • I take the trip of my dreams to Latin America.
  • I buy a house with a large garden and an open fire, not far from my work.

In this second part, blank pages are provided for the following exercises:

I am more in touch with my feelings and can express my emotions.

Define “your future goals”:

  • 1-month objectives
  • 6-month objectives
  • 1-year objectives
  • 2-year objectives
  • 5-year objective
  • 10-year objectives
  • Life objectives

Cleansing yourself

What is cleansing?

One of the cornerstones of creative visualization is that the more positive our beliefs, emotions and attitudes , the closer we come to our inner self, or our true mind and soul, and the more the creative energy of the universe enables us to achieve them.

Therefore, it’s essential to purge our negative thoughts, which means you have to be aware of them, eliminate them, and turn them into positive thoughts.

©Photo-K – Fotolia

Cleansing can be done on a physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual level.

There are different ways to do this. The different forms of psychotherapy, body therapies, such as yoga, massage, and many other forms of therapy, are all ways to purify ourselves from our negativity.

The important thing is to be fully aware of negative thoughts , in order to be able to free ourselves from them and to turn them into positive ones.

Basic cleansing method

  • When I feel that a goal is difficult to achieve, I write the goal as a positive statement , in the present, as if it had already been achieved.
  • I am aware of all the negative elements and thoughts that stand in the way of achieving this goal and I take note of them.
  • I make positive statements called “clarifying statements” that neutralize these negative thoughts.
  • And, I regularly revisit, focus, and/or meditate on these positive statements until I cleanse negative thoughts.

In this section, pages are provided for the following exercises:

  • What stops me from achieving what I want
  • Clarifying statement : positive statements that counteract negative thoughts

Forgiveness and freedom

Forgive and free others

It is important to forgive others, in order to free oneself from anger, grudges, and/or resentment.

Shakti Gawain suggests that, at some point, we make a list of the people who hurt us and imagine a conversation with them, to explain how we feel, and then tell them that we forgive them.

  • For each person, say:

“I forgive you and set you free. Go and be happy. ”

Forgive yourself and free yourself

  • To free yourself from guilt, you have to forgive yourself.
  • The author suggests that we make a list of the people we have hurt and imagine that we ask them for forgiveness for what we have done.
  • “I forgive myself and absolve myself of all guilt, here, now and forever! “

In this section, blank pages are provided for the following exercises:

  • The people who have hurt you in your life
  • Forgive yourself and free yourself

Negative thought patterns

Now that we know how to create a positive state of mind  with the use of positive thoughts, there is now a desire to cleanse our negative thoughts.

However, it is important to understand that we should not suppress them, but be conscious of them in order to be able to purify them more easily.

Some negative thoughts are harder to identify. For example, there are prejudices, preconceptions or things that are just part of everyday life.

There are lots of negative thoughts in all cultures.

Shakti Gawain lists the 6 most common negative thoughts that we can change by the creation of our own written positive statements:

“I have no power. “

It’s common to feel victimized by the events of life and this is linked to the notion that we have no power over our lives. In this situation, it’s important to accept the responsibility that we create our lives.

“I don’t have enough.”

Many people believe that they will not have enough time, love, money, vitality, etc. The very thought that you don’t have enough will lead you to not have enough. Therefore, it’s necessary to affirm that we have more than enough.

“Life is a struggle. “

When we think that life is difficult, that everything is complicated and that we must earn everything we get, our thoughts become reality and lead to an unhappy life. Therefore we have to declare that we have the right to be happy , cheerful and to have a good life.

“I don’t deserve it. “

If we think that we are not intelligent, appreciative, and gifted enough and that we do not deserve to be loved, appreciated and happy, it will cause us to not love ourselves and not be loved. Therefore we need to declare that we love ourselves, are talented and that we deserve the happiness of lov e and being loved.

“I’m afraid of failure, of power. “

The fear of success is as common as the fear of failure . In both cases, we are afraid of rejection by others or not able to accept success or failure.

Therefore we need to state the fact that we have the right to be ourselves without fear of judgment by others.

“I don’t trust myself. I don’t trust the universe. “

Sometimes it is difficult to let go, to let our intuition guide us, and to use our inner strength. Therefore we must state that we can trust ourselves and let ourselves be guided by our inner strength , in other words, our inner soul that guides us towards the discovery of the best that is in us.

The thought pattern process

Shakti Gawain invites us to work on our thoughts, either with a partner or record them so that we can listen to them.

The exercise consists of the following questions:

  • What area of your life is problematic?
  • What are the related emotions? (fear, sadness, anger, guilt)
  • What are the related physical sensations?
  • What are the associated negative thoughts? (worries, fears, etc.)
  • What would be the worst thing that could happen? And what is your biggest fear about this?
  • What would be the most beautiful thing that could happen? Your dream scenario concerning this?
  • What are the fears and the thoughts that hold you back on this subject?
  • What positive statements can overcome these negative thoughts?

Then repeat these positive statements alone, or with a partner, until the obstacles are overcome and you are confident.

Areas of expertise

Focus on specific areas of life

©Violetkaipa – Fotolia

Shakti Gawain suggests that we practice the different techniques of creative visualization in all areas of life.

She advises to start with one or two areas of life that presently seem the most important and to focus on them for a while before proceeding to the other areas.

Here is how she breaks down the areas of life:

  • The relationship I have with myself
  • The relationship I have with others
  • Work, creativity, financial prosperity
  • Home and possessions
  • Health and appearance
  • Leisure and/or travel
  • My environment

For each of these areas, she suggests that you complete the following exercises:

  • Define goals for this area
  • Imagine a dream scenario
  • Devote one page to the cleansing process : list the barriers in the way of these goals
  • Draw a treasure map
  • Write a positive statement several times and, if there are still negative thoughts, get rid of them with positive statements

She also suggests we use the power of the pink bubble to help the process succeed.

Inspiration

Specific techniques

In this last part, Shakti Gawain explains to us that it is important to feel in harmony with yourself and life. It relates to the ability to find your creative skills and share the positive energy that you have within you.

©Blinkblink – Fotolia

To achieve this, she suggests that we complete the following lists:

Self-esteem list

Recognize and appreciate all of your qualities and the positive things you possess in all areas of life.

Things I like about myself are…

List of successes

Acknowledge and appreciate all of your successes and all that you are proud of in every aspect of your life, even if it doesn’t matter to others.

Book critique of “ The Creative Visualisation workbook: A Practical Exercise Manual”

I have given myself one of the best gifts in my life, purely from my belief in and time taken to apply these exercises.

I discovered this book at a time in my life when I wanted to initiate changes, but I didn’t know exactly what they were, or how to achieve them.

Before this, I had traveled a lot and fulfilled many dreams, but I suddenly found myself in a situation where I had specific beliefs, about my new role as a mother, that conflicted with this lifestyle and other plans that I had in mind.

There were still many unfulfilled dreams in my mind, all very jumbled, which made me unsure of where to start.

I decided to buy the practical exercise manual, rather than the theoretical book about creative visualization techniques by the same author. In fact, I told myself that I wanted to start practicing immediately and that I had no need for the theory because I had already read similar books.

If you are of the same opinion, my suggestion is that you read this manual immediately, as you know that the theory book is available, should you want to refer to it.

I found it very clear and easy to put the exercises into practice to achieve my life goals.

I immediately put all of the exercises into practice, with surprising results.

Since I read this book, I have launched all my projects, big and small, with this method and I am so delighted with the results that I have given this book to everyone who has told me they want a change in their life.

The creation of my reality , through the implementation of my true desires, has totally changed my life, as it has led me to understand that I have so much more within myself and that my plans depend on me, not on others.

The key is to believe with all your heart, not to get overwhelmed by the negative thoughts of others, and to liberate yourself from the negative thoughts in your mind.

If you want to make your dreams come true, rather than just exist, Creative Visualisation Techniques is a book for you!

If you have heard that everything is possible but you still have doubts, just follow the exercises in this book and you will be on the road to the life of your dreams!

Strong Points :

  • This practical exercise manual is clear and easy to use.
  • It is not necessary to read the theoretical book although it may be helpful to some readers for whom certain concepts, such as the higher self or the power of the positive over the mind, are completely unknown.
  • There are pages provided to allow the reader to make their notes and complete the suggested exercises.

Weak Points :

  • Shakti Gawain should advise readers that although the exercises are simple, they are very helpful; some people do not use them because they think they are too obvious to be beneficial.
  • The part on thought processes seems a little simplified to me, because changing thoughts, in a way that lasts, often requires the help of a therapist who is an expert in that field.

We had no capital and almost no experi- ence, but after each small step we took, the next small step became obvious. I feel we were led into the publishing business by some higher power (or whatever you want to call it) far beyond either one of us. In 1978, Shakti wrote her first book, Creative Visualization. We initially printed two thousand copies of the book. We had to borrow money to pay the printing bill. I don’t recall that we spent anything at all on promotion; I don’t think we sent out even one review copy. But the print run sold out, quickly, purely through word of mouth. Booksellers kept telling us that people would come in, buy a copy, and return a few days later and want five or ten copies to give to their friends. The book initially sold itself — something I attribute to Shakti’s clear, beautiful writing style, as well as the solid content of the book. It was the kind of book people wanted to read and reread, the kind of book people cherished for everything it had given them. It was the rare kind of book that helped people make wonderful changes in their lives. N N N N N N N N N N N N N N N vii Creative Visualization-Front 1/23/01 5:07 PM Page vii We started to get enthusiastic letters from readers very soon after publication. One of my favorites beautifully summed up the feelings of a great many readers: “Other self-help books I’ve read have made me feel as if someone was pointing a finger at me and telling me, ‘This is how it is!’ But Shakti took me by the hand, led me into a beautiful garden, and handed me a bouquet of flowers, one at a time. Quietly, gently, and with great caring. Thank you for a beautiful book.” Creative Visualization has now sold more than three mil- lion copies in the U.S., and has been reprinted in more than twenty-five foreign editions. The book launched Shakti’s career as an internationally known and loved speaker and seminar leader, and it launched my career as a publisher as well. The book has shown us both how to visualize and create success, and I am eternally grateful that Shakti had the vision and courage to write it. It is my hope and prayer that reading Creative Visualization will help you create exactly the kind of life you want, so that you truly will be happy, fulfilled, prosperous, radiantly healthy, filled with love, joy, and creative energy. It is the promise of the book, and it has been proven, over and over, that the book delivers what it promises. Marc Allen viii CREATIVE VISUALIZATION N N N N N N N N N N N N N N N Creative Visualization-Front 1/23/01 5:07 PM Page viii ix Introduction to the Second Edition I t’s hard for me to believe that it has been so many years since Creative Visualization was first published. At the time I was thirty years old, and just in the process of discovering my life’s work. For a number of years I had been an active seeker, dedicating myself to exploring Eastern philosophy and Western psychology in an attempt to discover the deeper meaning and purpose of my life. Certain ideas and techniques I had learned were, in fact, having a profound effect on my awareness and my way of living. I’m the kind of person who, once I discover something meaningful, simply can’t help telling everyone who’s willing to listen. So I found myself beginning to counsel people and lead small groups and workshops, teaching the concepts and exer- cises that were helping me solve my personal problems and expand my awareness. It occurred to me that it might be a good idea to write these things down in a little book that I could make available to my students. As I was writing the book, I experienced alternating waves of creative enthusiasm and self-doubt, thinking, “Who am I to write a book telling people how to find greater happiness and fulfillment in life? I’m certainly no expert. My life isn’t perfect.” My friend Marc Allen helped me get through the rough spots, encouraging me to stop worrying about it and just focus N N N N N N N N N N N N N N N Creative Visualization-Front 1/23/01 5:07 PM Page ix on my creative process. We decided to publish the book our- selves, even though we had very little knowledge of publishing and even less money. Somehow we managed to get the book out there in a few bookstores. The rest is history. People seemed to love the book, and it sold by word of mouth. Gradually over the next few years it became a bestseller, and continues to be very popular to this day, all over the world. I think one reason for its popularity is that it is short, simple, practical, and has techniques that read- ers can begin using immediately and effectively. It has been extremely satisfying to receive thousands of let- ters telling me how much this book has helped people with spe- cific and sometimes serious problems. I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to contribute in this way. My work has blossomed right along with the book. For many years I have been leading workshops all over the world, and I have written and published several other books. Creative Visualiza- tion helped me find my path in life, just as it has helped others. The time has come for a revised edition. I have made rela- tively few changes, simply trying to clarify certain points, deep- en certain concepts, and generally update it. If you are already familiar with the first edition, I hope you enjoy the changes. If this is your first experience with Creative Visualization, may it help you create all that your heart and soul desire. Shakti Gawain x CREATIVE VISUALIZATION N N N N N N N N N N N N N N N Creative Visualization-Front 1/23/01 5:07 PM Page x xi Acknowledgments T hank you Marc Allen and Dean Campbell for your love and support in writing this book and in all other ways. Thank you Rainbow Canyon for your beautiful friendship. And special thanks to my mother, Elizabeth, for all your love, wisdom, and encouragement. I’d also like to thank all the incredible teachers who have contributed so much to my life and happiness, as well as to the understanding that has been channeled into this book. Some of you I have known as gurus, some I have known as personal friends and lovers, and others of you have come to me in the form of books. To all of you I send my love and deep apprecia- tion. Last but not least, I’d like to acknowledge and thank my own inner guide who keeps showing me the way . . . reminding me how beautiful life really is ... and who actually is responsi- ble for writing this book. N N N N N N N N N N N N N N N Creative Visualization-Front 1/23/01 5:07 PM Page xi A Letter to My Readers ear Friends, I decided to write this book because it seemed like the best way I could think of to share with others the many wonderful things I have learned which have so deepened and expanded my experience and enjoyment of life. I do not consider myself by any means an expert on the art of creative visualization. I am a student of the subject, and the more I study and use creative visualization myself, the more I discover how vast and deep its potential is . . . truly it is as infi- nitely creative as your own imagination. This book is meant as an introduction and workbook for learning and using creative visualization. Very little of the mate- rial is original to me; it is a synthesis of the most practical and useful ideas and techniques that I’ve learned in my personal study. My sources are many. I’ve included at the end a list of rec- ommended resources that I think you will find interesting and helpful. This book contains many different techniques. You will probably find that it works best not to try to absorb them all at once, but more gradually. I suggest that you read the book slow- ly, trying some of the exercises as you go along, and giving your- self the chance to absorb them deeply. Or you might want to N N N N N N N N N N N N N N N D xii Creative Visualization-Front 1/23/01 5:07 PM Page xii read it once through, then reread it more slowly. The Underappreciated Man Behind the “Best Graphic Ever Produced”

He’s known for his acclaimed depiction of Napoleon’s ill-fated invasion of Russia. But Charles Minard was full of innovative visualizations.

Charles Joseph Minard’s name is synonymous with an outstanding 1869 graphic depicting the horrific loss of life that Napoleon’s army suffered in 1812 and 1813, during its invasion of Russia and subsequent retreat. The graphic (below), which is often referred to simply as “Napoleon’s March” or “the Minard graphic,” rose to its prominent position in the pantheon of data visualizations largely thanks to praise from one of the field’s modern giants, Edward Tufte . In his 1983 classic text, “The Visual Display of Quantitative Information,” Tufte declared that Napoleon’s March “may well be the best statistical graphic ever produced.”

Today Minard is revered in the data-visualization world, commonly mentioned alongside other greats such as John Snow , Florence Nightingale , and William Playfair . But Minard’s legacy has been almost completely dominated by his best-known work. In fact, it may be more accurate to say that Napoleon’s March is his only widely known work. Many fans of the March have likely never even seen the graphic that Minard originally paired it with: a visualization of Hannibal’s famous military campaign in 218 BC, as seen in the image below.

On its face, it may not seem remarkable that Minard is remembered for this one piece of work; after all, many people owe their fame to a single great achievement, and the Napoleon graphic is certainly worthy of its reputation. But Minard was most definitely not a one-hit wonder.

Minard made scores of other graphics and charts, as well as nearly 50 maps. He pioneered several important thematic mapping techniques and perfected others, such as using flow lines on a map. A great example of this is the trio of maps in the graphic at the top of the post, which depict cotton imports to Europe.

It wasn’t until I met R.J. Andrews, the visual storyteller behind the website Infowetrust.com , that I learned about Minard’s prolific career. Andrews has been studying the history of data visualization and writing a series of posts about some of the field’s “sacred cows.” When he started looking into Minard, he found a trove of his work in the digital archives of the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées (National School of Bridges and Roads), where Minard was an instructor.

Minard made some of his charts and maps during his engineering career, which culminated in his appointment as inspector general of the school. But it was after he retired, at age 70, that he really poured himself into crafting his “graphic tables and figurative maps,” as he called them. The Napoleon and Hannibal graphics were among the very last he made, at age 88.

Minard wasn’t the first to put flow lines on a map , but he really raised the bar for doing so. The maps are all designed to tell a story—to “speak to they eyes,” in Minard’s words.* He mapped the flow of everything from coal and wine to people and languages. He always prioritized the data, often distorting the underlying geography to accommodate it.

In some cases, such as the cotton import maps, he charted the same data over time. In the video above, Andrews explains how the cotton maps tell the story of an emerging global economy and the impacts of civil war.

The invention of the pie chart is credited to Playfair, but again Minard took an existing idea and vastly improved it. He was the first to use pie charts on a map, and he added his own innovation: turning the pie charts into proportional symbols.

One of his first pie-chart maps shows the origin of butcher’s meats supplied to Paris markets in 1858 from each of the country’s departments. The size of the pies indicates how much total meat came from each location. The colors indicate which type of meat: black for beef, red for veal, green for mutton. All the departments in yellow contributed some meat, and the meatless areas are tan colored. A century and a half later, cartographers are still using the technique .

Andrews also discovered that, unlike now, Minard’s work was widely known and appreciated in his day, at least among government officials. Buried in a 15-year-old scholarly paper, Andrews found an intriguing passage of Minard’s obituary translated from the original French. It said that from around 1850 to 1860, all the ministers of public works in France made a point of having their portraits painted with one of Minard’s charts in the background. This sent Andrews down a rabbit hole in search of those portraits. You can read Andrews’ account of the hunt and what he found out.

Penthouse in the city center, Moscow, Russia by AIYA bureau

creative visualisation book

AIYA bureau : Stylish penthouse full of art and designer furniture. The 190 m² penthouse on the 41st floor with panoramic windows offers 360-degree views of Moscow cityscape.

The key point is impossibly high ceilings make the space very airy. Housing a huge living room with a kitchen and dining zone, a master-suite, two kids rooms, a cabinet, three bathrooms and a laundry, the space has soaring ceilings that let the light in and windows that allow the owner to take in the views of Moscow City, the Moscow River, Vorobyovy Hills and beyond. The core of this design project is dark monochrome finishes that would be great for furniture in neutral colors and sophisticated shapes. The design process was a bit complicated because of angle-shaped panoramic windows. We chose a curvy sofa by Edra and armchairs by Moroso to accentuate the extraordinary shape of the space.

Designing an interior of a luxury property requires a balance. How do you fulfill your client’s brief while creating something worthy?

This penthouse was created not for specific customers, but for demonstration and future sales, that's why before starting the design concept we imagined the portrait of the future owner. Will it be a single businessman, or a couple of celebrities, or a family with kids? We decided to show how this penthouse could be planned for a modern family with kids or planning to have them. We settled on a contemporary concept with designer furniture and a lot of art to ensure the space felt warm and welcoming while retaining a gallery-like ambience.

This penthouse must be a comfortable home for its owners and at the same time an impressive place to entertain guests, as a place that wows them the moment they step inside. We should also combine everyday life comfort and wow-effect, and make the space with 5,2 m high ceilings comfortable to live in.
