A happiness jar is a lovely way to bring some positivity and light into your otherwise mundane day. This post outlines 50 inspirational happiness jar quotes so that you can make your own DIY happiness jar to use every day of the year!

What is a Happiness Jar

If you’re unfamiliar, a happiness jar is basically a jar filled with cut-up pieces of paper that have inspirational, happy quotes written on them.

The point of a happy jar is to be able to pull a little bit of inspiration any time you might need an instant pick-me-up.

Is a Happiness Jar a Good Idea for Your Mental Health?

A happiness jar is a great idea if you are  struggling with your mental health  or if you just want a little boost of positive thoughts throughout the day!

I’d say a happiness jar is a wonderful tool for  mental health support . Inside the jar, you’ll find little bits of motivation to help you see the day in a happier light which can directly correlate with your mood.

A motivational quote jar can be a great tool for hard times when you aren’t able to see things clearly. For example, on a hard day, you might pull one of the happy messages for a bit of a  mood boost .

They can also serve as a great way to  support daily mental health ! Incorporate the happiness jar into your daily routine for a little boost of positivity every morning before you get going with your day.

How to Use a Happiness Jar of Quotes

My favorite way to utilize a happiness jar of quotes is to incorporate it into my daily routine. I have a jar of happy quotes near my coffee maker and have a routine where I pull a quote while my morning coffee is brewing.

Another way to use a kindness jar is to use it during difficult times. Keep the happiness quote jar somewhere easily accessible. Then on hard days, pull one or as many as you need to start to feel a bit better.

After pulling the happy quotes, I suggest sticking them back into the jar to pull a different day.

“Happiness depends upon ourselves.” – Aristotle

“Happiness is not something ready-made. It comes from your own actions.” – Dalai Lama

“There is one thought that I feel can be helpful to grown-ups and children alike: Sadness isn’t forever. I’m not suggesting that we remind ourselves of this in order to lessen our grief. On the contrary. The knowledge that time does bring relief from sadness and that sooner or later there will be days when we are happy again may allow us to grieve more fully and deeply when we need to.” – Alan Cohen

“Be happy with what you have. Be excited about what you want.” – Fred Rogers

“If someone bases his/her happiness on major events like a great job, huge amounts of money, a flawlessly happy marriage or a trip to Paris, that person isn’t going to be happy much of the time. If, on the other hand, happiness depends on a good breakfast, flowers in the yard, a drink or a nap, then we are more likely to live with quite a bit of happiness.” – Andy Rooney

“Let us be grateful to the people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.” – Marcel Proust

“Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.” – Abraham Lincoln

“The good news is that every morning we have the choice; not to be controlled by circumstances nor our past but by purposely designing our day, hence our lives better. Not to react to life but to respond with love.” – Bernard Kelvin Clive

“Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace, and gratitude” – Denis Waitley

“‎The desire to reach the stars is ambitious. The desire to reach hearts is wise and most possible.”

Elizabeth Gilbert Happy Jar Quotes

“In my experience, this is the hardest lesson of them all. After a certain age, we are all walking around this world in bodies made of secrets and shame and sorrow and old, unhealed injuries. Our hearts grow sore and misshapen around all this pain – yet somehow, still, we carry on.”

“Embrace the glorious mess that you are.”

“Happiness is the consequence of personal effort. You fight for it, strive for it, insist upon it, and sometimes even travel around the world looking for it. You have to participate relentlessly in the manifestations of your own blessings. And once you have achieved a state of happiness, you must never become lax about maintaining it. You must make a mighty effort to keep swimming upward into that happiness forever, to stay afloat on top of it.”

“Sometimes it’s just true that other people have better ideas for your life than you do.”

“It all goes away. Eventually, everything goes away.”

“At some point in a woman’s life, she just gets tired of being ashamed all the time. After that, she is free to become whoever she truly is.”

“When you’re lost in those woods, it sometimes takes you a while to realize that you are lost. For the longest time, you can convince yourself that you’ve just wandered off the path, that you’ll find your way back to the trailhead any moment now. Then night falls again and again, and you still have no idea where you are, and it’s time to admit that you have bewildered yourself so far off the path that you don’t even know from which direction the sun rises anymore.”

“You were given life; it is your duty (and also your entitlement as a human being) to find something beautiful within life, no matter how slight.”

positivity jar ideas

You know that feeling of opening a fortune cookie and reading something that is not only good, but also eerily accurate with what’s going on in your life?

Now, how about that feeling you get when a stranger randomly gives you a compliment? Or that feeling when a friend sends you a sweet text out of nowhere?

What if I told you that you could literally bottle up those good feelings and enjoy them whenever you like?

It’s possible with a positivity jar.

Let me explain…

What Exactly Is a Positivity Jar?

Also known as a Happy or Happiness Jar , a positivity jar is almost exactly what it sounds like- a jar full of positive thoughts and notes!

You fill it yourself with things that bring you joy. That can include joyful moments you’d like to remember, heartwarming quotes, powerful affirmations, motivating mantras, sweet compliments, things that make you feel hopeful and even your favorite pictures!

Then, when you are feeling down, hopeless or discouraged, you select a note from the jar and relive those small pieces of everyday magic that you’ve stashed away.

A positivity jar is a wonderful tool to add to your self care kit .

How to Make a DIY Positivity Jar

Positivity jar instructions are easy as 1-2-3.

diy happiness jar and notes

Here’s what you need to do-

  • Find a clear jar or container . ** make it extra special by picking a meaningful container with memories attached to it
  • Color & cut out your favorite quotes and affirmations from my free printable [get it below] .
  • Write your own positive words and happy memories on blank slips of paper .
  • Fold or roll up each piece of paper and add them to the jar .
  • Continue adding to the jar over time .
  • Whenever you are feeling sad, discouraged, low in motivation or negative, pick a positive note from the jar, read it and smile . ** another strategy is to select one note daily to start or end each day on a positive note

Tips byDeze

  • Decorate your jar to make it extra special.
  • Stuck for time or inspiration? Put positive words in a jar whenever you make a gratitude list or write in your gratitude journal.
  • Make this a fun family activity by having every one contribute to one big household jar (each family member can be assigned a different color of paper and any notes written to them can be written on that color paper) .

Simply looking at the fullness of the jar will make you feel good. And reading the notes will make you feel even better!

Things to Put in Your Positive Thoughts Jar

Your options for things to write in a happy jar are pretty endless, but I’d like to give some examples to spark your imagination.

I’m a words of affirmation kind of gal. So, I really like the idea of creating a positive affirmation jar; one where you can select and read a different affirmation every day.

There are so many different types of affirmations to choose from (most of which you can find on this site)! Check out the following lists of affirmations, write your favorite ones on slips of paper and stick them in the jar.

  • Self Love affirmations
  • Abundance affirmations
  • Confidence affirmations
  • Christian affirmations
  • Fertility affirmations
  • Beauty affirmations

Happy Quotes

Positivity jar quotes are any sayings by someone else that bring a smile to your face, a pep to your step and a sense of confidence and encouragement to your heart. Here are some ideas-

  • Song lyrics
  • Book excerpts
  • Encouraging quotes for when you feel down
  • Confident woman quotes
  • Quotes about living in the moment

encouraging notes to put in the encouragement box

Fond Memories

Make this a true jar of smiles by reminding yourself of good times that already made you smile. Including some of the following items will keep the moments you never want to forget alive:

  • Funny or cute things that your kid(s) say
  • Milestones for your family
  • Compliments that people have given you in the past
  • Raving performance reviews from work
  • Reminders from a fun trip
  • Greeting cards that you’ve been given
  • Funny memes
  • Something beautiful that you noticed on a walk

Notes to Your Future Self

Your positivity jar notes can even be addressed to your future self.

This works well if you plan to stockpile notes over the course of a month or year and then open them on a set date. It also works well if you’re into future self journaling.

Some ideas for what to put in this kind of positive word jar are:

  • New things that you don’t want to forget about (new foods you’ve discovered…new songs…new people you’ve met)
  • Advice to yourself
  • Fears you’ve conquered
  • Habits you want to keep working on (use it somewhat like a habit tracker )
  • Things to add to next year’s bucket list
  • Goals you want to focus on in the future

Include all of the categories above into your jar, with each category written on a differently colored paper.

Why a Gratitude Jar Is All You Need To Be Happy {+ Printables}

This is how I decided to create my Gratitude Jar of Happiness today.

I woke up at half past three this morning. Thoughts running through my head like unsupervised children packed with four candies and cups of hot chocolate. My body needs sleep , but my mind wants to think and think and think some more… Ugh!

I’ve got an important health-related procedure coming up in a month or so. Panicking from now won’t make things easier, if not the opposite.

So I spent the hour and a half between waking up and the alarm at 5 a.m . contemplating how to bring more peace to my heart and soul. I need them so desperately right now.

I came up with three options – all tested and proven to work for the last 6-7 years.

Walks , meditation , and gratitude – the three ways I know my body and mind love to be nurtured. And while I wait for England to defrost so I can walk longer than half an hour before I turn into an icy popsicle, meditation, and gratitude are my go-to.

I am not an expert when it comes to meditating. I would either find my favorite Youtuber and choose one of her guided meditations or sit in silence and try to breathe through the darkness.

However, gratitude is something I’ve mastered. Let’s talk about it.

What is Gratitude?

Thankfulness, gratitude, and appreciation are all deeply connected, expressing the pleasant feeling of being thankful and appreciative for something one has received. The word gratitude comes from the Latin word gratus, which means “grateful, pleasant”.

The Benefits of Gratitude

Allow me to list just a few of the benefits of gratitude below:

  • It makes you more positive ;
  • Improves your sleep;
  • Improves your physical health: lowers blood pressure, reduces symptoms of illness, and more.
  • Improves psychological health;
  • Increases your overall happiness;
  • Reduces aggression;
  • Improves personal and social relationships;
  • Enhances self-confidence and self-esteem;
  • Promotes acts of self-love ;
  • Boosts empathy;
  • Reduces anxiety and depression (which was my case above);
  • Promotes self-satisfaction and feeling of enough;
  • It makes you more resilient;
  • It helps you forgive and let go easier (mainly to yourself, which is something many of us struggle with).

Finding Gratitude in Hard Times

Let’s agree that expressing gratitude is natural when things are going great, and we rarely need reminders.

But what if there is a tiny worm of anxiety and worry that digs through our mind, disturbs our sleep, and makes food taste like black sand?

What about the moments when you ‘ know ‘ you should be grateful, yet feel everything else but…?

Finding gratitude in hard times is an art that requires you to be really low before mastering it. Yes, you read that correctly. It’s what happened to me over 6 years ago.

If you’re curious, maybe going over this post on finding happiness through thankfulness will shine some light on it. The short romanticized version is that I was ready to give up on life, but I managed to squeeze a page of gratitude one rainy evening, and I did the same the evening after and the evening after.

Fast forward 6 years later, I got married, adopted a dog, opened three businesses, and I do what I love every single day.

Yet, I woke up at half past 3 this morning, troubled, worried, anxious , restless, pounding heart and hands that need to scribble gratitude.

So I am ready to, once again, invite the magic of Gratitude into my life. And I will make it fun for both you and me. Ready to join me?

Let’s make a Gratitude Jar!!!

clear jar with colorful pieces of paper and label that says my gratitude jar

What is a Gratitude Jar

Grab a small piece of paper. Write a word or two of gratitude and place them in a glass jar. Now you have a gratitude jar, and it is that simple.

However, we all love complicating our lives, so let’s do that by expanding the idea of a gratitude jar creation.

How to Make a Gratitude Jar – Ideas

A glass jar and pieces of paper.

The most common way to build your gratitude jar is to grab a glass jar from your kitchen cupboards and stick a label that says ‘Gratitude Jar’ or ‘Jar of Happiness’ on it. Keep it somewhere you won’t forget about it. Leave a pen and a few pieces of paper next to it so it’s easy to scribble a few words, fold the paper, and put it in the jar.

Grab these few printable gratitude sheets if you’d like to make things pretty. All you need to do is print them, cut them, and keep them next to your gratitude jar.

Printable Gratitude Jar for Journal Junkies

If you are anything like me, and journaling is your second nature, then this idea might be better than the first one.

We keep the idea of building our own gratitude journal, but this time, instead of using the empty jar from the pickles we finished last week, we print that jar and write on it. Sounds illogical? Check the photo below.

Of course, I’ve got you covered on this one too.

I created this printable gratitude jar two years ago for my Facebook group. The FB group doesn’t exist anymore, but I still keep that printable available for purchase. It costs less than three sips of coffee (I promise), and you can print it as often as you wish (from now until eternity). You can grab it by clicking here.

How to Use a Gratitude Jar

Maybe the right question would be: ‘When to use a gratitude jar?’

You use it every day or whenever you feel like the greyish in your life is too much, so you start seeking bright colors.

You write a word, a sentence, or a paragraph, whatever feels best at that very moment. If you only have limited space but words can’t stop pouring onto the paper, keep writing in your journal or on your device. Never stop gratitude from pouring out of your heart – let it all out. It is a positive energy that seeks manifestation moment, and you must offer that.

printed gratitude jar with written gratitude notes mockup

What to write in a gratitude jar?

Here are a few great ideas on what to write in a gratitude jar:

  • Write about the best moments of your day (ex.: ‘no traffic’, ‘boss said Well done!’, first sunny day for this month’, ‘cooked awesome meal’, ‘bought a new book’ )
  • Mention the great people you met on that day.
  • Big events that happened (obviously)
  • Big decisions you took (ex.: ‘we’re trying for a baby’, ‘starting a new course’, ‘decided to stop caring what others think of me’ )
  • Manifestations – a little weird one, but so fun. Instead of expressing gratitude for what happened, write a sentence of gratitude for something you want to attract in your life, but write it like it happened already. (ex.: ‘I am grateful we just moved into our new house’, ‘I am grateful for getting an A on my exam’, ‘I am grateful for finishing my project three weeks before the due date ‘)

Whatever you decide to write to write and store in your gratitude jar, be sure it’s positive, colorful, and vibrant.

Do you want to know which type of gratitude jar I decided to use? It’s the printable one; I am keeping it in my journal, so every time I open it, I know I have to write a few extra words of thankfulness. Which gratitude jar did you choose to have?

How To Create a Happiness Jar (And Why You’d Want To)

January 1, 2019

Heather Dessinger

Happiness Jar

There’s a fresh new year ahead and not a goal in sight at my house. Instead, I’m focusing on personal experiments instead of resolutions, and finding practical ways to live one of my favorite pieces of advice:

Enjoy the little things, for one day you will look back and realize they were the big things.” – Robert Brault

Practicing gratitude is associated with many health benefits including improved mood, better sleep, more positive habits, less inflammation, and improved heart health. It’s no secret, though, that savoring the little things that make life sweet is easier said than done. One of my favorite ways to make it a practical in real life  is to keep a Happiness Jar, which was first introduced by Elizabeth Gilbert .

Basically, here’s the idea: Get some pretty paper and then everyday – or one day a week or whatever works for you – add a note to your jar that describes a moment that made you happy. The more you fill it up with happy and thankful moments, the more beautiful it becomes. Isn’t that just the perfect picture of what life is like?

Why I Decided To Create A Happiness Jar

For me, the decision to create a Happiness Jar came when I was standing at a parade wishing I’d washed my hair. You see, the year before I’d stood at the same parade, held the very same baby boy, and wished the same thing about my hair.

While it may seem on the surface that nothing had changed in those 365 days, the truth is that SO MUCH had. My baby boy went from a wee babe to a walking, talking boy in a thousand almost imperceptible steps.

He and his siblings have brought more laughter and joy than I could have imagined before becoming a parent. (And also a fair amount of frustration, but we’re focusing on the good stuff for now.)

I know theoretically that they will not always be this small, and that the daily joys they bring will someday be forgotten unless I write them down. Honestly, though, it’s a reality I find difficult to grasp. It’s so easy to take the little joys of this phase for granted, but as a gift to the future me I’m trying to be more intentional about savoring (and documenting) this time. The Happiness Jar is a visual daily reminder to do that, which helps a lot on busy days when it’s easy to let gratitude slip away.

I’d love it if you’d join me on this journey, so I wanted to share with you some of the questions I had, as well as the answers I found:

Questions #1: Is it worth it?

As a busy mama of three, I don’t typically look for MORE things to add into my routine. But because I know I’ll treasure these little scraps of paper when my kids are older, I’ve devised a way to make it practical.

As I go throughout my day, I use my phone to keep notes about moments that were particularly meaningful to me: something funny one of the kids said, a sauna conversation with my husband, receiving a message from a mama who found my post on tongue ties and finally figured out the root of her nursing issues, etc.

At dinnertime, I might ask my kids about some of their best moments from the day and include those, too. It’s pretty amazing how just a few moments of reflecting on something good can help them shift toward a more thankful perspective, too.

Question #2: What should I add to my Happiness Jar?

This is YOUR jar, so you make the rules. There are lots of things you could include depending on what seems most fitting that day:

  • Your happiest moment that day
  • Something you are grateful for
  • As suggested here , you could also include “a lucky token, ticket stub from a trip you loved or a note from a loved one.”
  • Notes from your kids about their happiest moments

Whatever it is, write it down, put a date on it, and toss it on the jar.

Question #3: When do I open my Happiness Jar?

Some people like to open it on New Years, while others prefer to pop it open on a birthday, an anniversary, or any time they need a reminder about all the good in life.

How To Make a Happiness Jar (Step-by-Step Guide)

Technically, all you need is a jar, a pen, and some paper. But if you’re like me, you may have seen these apothecary jars from Wisteria  and thought two things:

What do you mean they’re out of stock!?!?!

$49!?!?! I’ll bet I can make something similar and still have enough left over to buy a jar of coconut oil.

If that’s you, read on. I was able to make two similar jars for less than $20 each, and that’s even with leftover paint for other projects, and some lovely new stencils that I know I’ll use again. One says happiness and gratitude, and the other says dreams.

Supplies Needed

I picked up everything I needed at a local craft store, but if you can’t find things locally I’ve also linked to where they can be found online.

  • Jar ( I used one this one )
  • Water-based, non-toxic glass paint in a frost finish ( like this )
  • Stencils (I picked these up at my local craft store)
  • Inexpensive stipple brush (I bought mine along with several other tools for $1.99 at my local craft store, but you can also find them online )
  • Parchment paper, tracing paper (you could also use vellum if you have it on hand)
  • Alcohol of any kind (rubbing, vodka, etc.) to clean the glass prior to application
  • Cotton ball or soft, lint-free cloth
  • Hair dryer (optional)
  • Paper for writing down your memories. I used scrapbooking paper – one sheet will make sixteen 3 in. x 3 in. squares.

Instructions

Step 1: Dip your cotton ball/cloth in alcohol and wipe down the surface of the glass.

Step 2: Using a ruler, draw a long line on your parchment paper/tracing paper. Lay the stencil underneath the parchment paper and position it over the line. Using your pencil, fill in the letter depicted by the stencil.

how-to-make-a-happiness-jar

Step 3: Once you have the entire word traced onto your paper, tape it to your jar.

diy-happiness-jar-tutorial

Step 4: Slide the “h” stencil (or whatever letter you’re using) under the parchment paper. Match the stencil “h” with the traced ‘h,’ then tape the stencil into place.

diy-gratitude-jar

Step 5: Using your stippling brush, apply a thin layer of paint to the stencil. Rather than long strokes, just dab the paint on in a “pecking” motion. This creates the texture that makes it look sandblasted.

Wait for it to dry (or use a hairdryer on it for 30 seconds if you’re impatient like me), then apply a second layer. Dry again, then apply one last layer if needed. Complete the rest of the letters and you’re done!

Tip: If at any point you find it hard to get a stencil lined up properly, you can turn the jar around to get a different perspective.

Step 6: Start writing down what makes you happy!

How To Make a Positivity Jar To Increase Positive Thinking

A few years ago, I came home from a meeting with my mentor and immediately decided to create a positivity jar. The mentor I had at the time is a fascinating guy. He’s a NLP Practitioner. So, you could say he’s a bit of a guru.

Disclosure: If you purchase anything from links in this post or any other, I may receive some kind of affiliate commission. However, I only ever mention products I love and would recommend whether I was being compensated or not. You can read my full disclaimer here.

I remember, it was a pretty long meeting in which we talked about all manner of things, including taking the time out to rethink and renew. We also compared notes on how easy it is to get bogged down in the negative aspects of daily life - even when there are more positives to consider.

Let’s face it, most of us find it easier to focus on what we haven’t done or what’s gone wrong, opposed to what went well.  In fact, if you have 20 things on a to-do list with 15 items ticked off and 5 not touched, I wonder how likely you are to stew over the 5 items not moved. It sounds silly, but it really isn't our fault!

How to create a positivity jar

If you create a positivity jar you can celebrate ALL the good stuff in life - every single day - with just a few simple tools. This will be a huge help if you would like to rewire your brain to see positives before negatives.

What do you need for a positive thoughts jar

A positivity jar is basically a happiness journal in a jar. That's all it is. Although, the entries might be a little shorter - you don't really want to be cramming reams of paper into a jar. Instead, here's what you need:

An open mind

You need the openness to be able to see the positives in every day. Some days will be harder than others and you may need to dig around your brain for a while. It will get easier though

A jar of any shape or size. If you plan on taking your positivity jar seriously, I recommend buying (or making) a jar that you really love. This is the one I use

Some scraps of paper. You might like to get some beautiful paper especially for your jar. I use rainbow paper and I love it! Origami paper like this works super well

How to make a positivity jar to increase positive thinking

The point is to fill your jar with scraps of paper: simple, right? On a scrap of paper, you write anything positive that’s happened, you’ve done, heard, seen, or experienced.

If you do this with an open mind and love for yourself, by the end of the year your jar should be crammed full of lovely little gems of happiness. It might seem hard to start with because, often, when people try to think of positives, they desperately search for big sparkly things that have happened.

The things you write down don’t need to be big nor sparkly.

What do you put in a positivity jar?

  • Nailed it! Moments
  • A treat you got yourself
  • New music discoveries
  • Wrote a poem (put it in the jar)
  • A to-do list entirely ticked off
  • Mark your progress in a challenge
  • A quote you’ve heard or read
  • Something your child said
  • A great book you’ve read
  • Something simple that made you laugh or smile
  • A goal achieved
  • A fantastic meal

The list really is endless. If you want more, detailed, ideas for what to include in your positivity jar, 25 Awesome Happy Jar Ideas You Will LOVE . You call it a positivity jar, I call it a happy jar... we're still friends though, right?

The key is to make it an enjoyable process. It helps to get a jar that you like - I use this Kilner Jar - and use paper that you like. If you love beautiful paper, use beautiful paper.

If you love rainbow colours, like me, then this Origami paper is perfect for a positive thoughts jar!

How to make a positivity jar to increase positive thinking

Try and put at least one note in the positivity jar a day. If you can do more than one a day, amazing!

You could even have a positivity jar at work and get all your colleagues to join in. If I worked in an office I'd totally be on board with that.

At the end of the year. You get to crack open the positivity jar and start reading all the things you’ve noted down throughout the year. THAT will be awesome!!

What Is a Happiness Jar? Find Out What Therapists Have to Say About This Trend

It takes less than two minutes to do.

It’s easy to fixate on the “bad” moments of everyday life, whether you got a flat tire on the way to work or burned your leftovers for dinner. If that sounds familiar, then you might want to consider adding a gratitude practice to your daily routine. One way to do this is by creating a happiness jar.

“By writing the happiest moment of our day onto a piece of paper daily and putting it into a jar, we’re training our brains to scan our environment for the positive and to become a ‘blessing detector,’” says Jeffrey Froh , professor of psychology at Hofstra University and author of Thrive: 10 Commandments for 20-Somethings to Live the Best-Life-Possible.

Now that we’ve got you hooked on happiness, keep reading to find out how to make your own happiness jar and the benefits of gratitude on mental health, according to professionals.

How to make a happiness jar

There’s no right or wrong way to make a happiness jar. In a blog post on her website, Gilbert encourages people to put whatever they’d like into the jar. There aren't any specific quotes or messages you must include. All you need is some paper, a pen, and a jar. Gilbert notes that the jar could even be a tissue box because at the end of the day “the vessel is just the vessel” where the information is stored. What’s more important is that it’s kept somewhere safe where you can refer back to it when you want to reflect on moments of joy throughout the years. You can even make a happiness jar for a friend to relish over the good memories and happy times you've had together—it can be whatever you want it to be.

Gilbert recommends dating the pieces of paper so you can know when these moments took place, similar to a diary entry. You can make it more visually appealing by using colored paper and pens, but that’s not necessary to reap the benefits.

Nina Vasan , MD, chief medical officer at Real , says that a physical happiness jar isn’t even necessary for some people. “For some, writing a note on their phone or writing in a journal is preferred. However, it is less about the format their gratitude practice takes and much more about the act of the practice.”

Now that you know how to make a happiness jar, here are some benefits of gratitude you may feel as a result of this self-care practice.

Benefits of a happiness jar on mental health

  • Gratitude can improve overall mental and physical health

If you’re looking for an easy and quick way to improve your overall health, then you might want to consider creating a happiness jar.

“Grateful people tend to be less stressed, anxious, and depressed. Some research even suggests that grateful people are less likely to have suicidal thoughts,” says Froh. “They also tend to be more alert and happy, and they have improved heart rate variability (i.e., an indicator of good heart health).”

That’s not to say that writing down what you’re grateful for will make you a superhuman, but it can help improve your mental and physical health.

2. Gratitude can improve relationships

As humans, we are wired for connections with other people, and practicing gratitude can help with that. “Gratitude is an important component of forming new relationships, which means a gratitude practice can open you up to new friendships and relationships,” says Vasan. “It is also critical to strengthening important existing relationships and can contribute to higher levels of satisfaction within the relationship and improved happiness.”

3. Gratitude can help shift a negative mindset

For people who struggle with depression, it can be difficult to find little pockets of joy in everyday life. Looking for moments to be grateful for doesn’t negate the suffering or negative emotions one experiences but can be a helpful tool toward rewiring the brain to look for more positives.

“We don't have an accurate depiction of our starting line, or how far we've come, if we aren't able to celebrate accomplishments or acknowledge gratitude,” says Kristen Casey , PsyD, clinical psychologist and insomnia specialist. “Gratitude can also help shift our mind when we are feeling uneasy. It can also help provide us with more balance in life.”

4. Gratitude may improve self-esteem

For many individuals, self-esteem is always a work in progress. With that said, keeping a happiness jar may help to improve self-esteem and overall confidence. “Having an ongoing gratitude practice can also help you build a stronger relationship with yourself,” says Vasan. “It reduces social comparison, the act of comparing yourself or your life to others, and helps you focus on the elements of your life you’re grateful for and proud of.”

5. Gratitude can help you savor life

It’s easy to take what we have for granted, but practicing gratitude can help shift your perspective and relish in all that you do have.

“It helps us get the good from the good. Not only can this amplify your morning coffee experience, but it can also help you appreciate your ‘ratty’ clothes and ‘small’ home,” says Froh. “You’ll soon realize that relative to 90 percent—if not 95 percent!—of the world, you dress like royalty and live in a castle. This realization will make you, and your bank account, happy.”

Now that you know what a happiness jar is and how to make one, head out to your local supply store and get yourself a jar, paper, and pens and get to work. If you don't have the materials, you can start by making a happiness jar online in a blank document and then slowly transitioning to pen and paper.

Glass Jar with Lid

The 'happiness jar' wellness hack can make you happier in 2020

A simple reminder of the joys in the everyday

Simple ways to boost our mood and be more grateful for what we do have, instead of focusing on what we don't have, are always welcome – and according to researchers, starting a 'happiness jar' could be a great way to improve our wellbeing.

Put simply, a happiness jar is a glass jar in which you put a daily note of gratitude. On a piece of paper, write down one good thing that has happened or one thing you are grateful for that day, fold it up and pop it into the jar. Continue this throughout the year, and when 2021 rolls around, you'll have plenty of wonderful memories to reflect on.

It may be a simple act, but the process has been backed by doctors. "I have quite a few patients that do this," Daniel Fryer, a qualified psychotherapist and author, told Stylist .

"On New Year's Eve they get a bell jar and throughout the year every time something nice happens they write it on a post-it note. Then, in the January of the next year, they pull out a post-it note every day and remind themselves of the nice things that happened over the year – and that sails you through what is supposed to be the most depressing month of the year."

During this time of year, many Brits experience Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), so it's a brilliant way to help boost your mood and kick-start the year with gratitude.

Happy Jar  DIY tutorial

This happy jar gift DIY  tutorial was inspired by this gift that I had found while writing the article “Good morning messages.” I found the gift on Amazon. While I love the idea of the gift, the size was 4”x 6” and I felt that we could come up with a larger size that would be a fabulous happy jar gift.

1. I found these jars around the house, including the large jar I ended up using which was a Yankee Candle Jar. I cleaned out the jar and this size is great. I put the candle in a pan of hot water (on the stove on medium)  until the bottom wax could be poured out. I also filled the candle with very hot water to clean out the rest of the wax.

You can use Ball jars also, just make sure tha t the mouth is wide enough for all the notes. Many different types of jars will work, just remember that the larger the jar, the more filler will need to be used.

2. I used a 12” x 12” sheet of colored card stock that I cut into 30 equal squares to write notes on. You can find card stock at your local Michaels or A.C. Moore. The card stock is thicker and makes a nicer note.

You can also find mini colored notes with envelopes that I have found from Amazon that would be great also. They come 10 to a color. I would use 30 per gift which equals a month of notes.

The note cards can be left blank for the recipient to fill in their own memories,  or you can fill out some memories and leave the rest blank.

If you use the colored envelopes, just use 3 coordinating colors per gift. All the supplies that I used are listed below.

happy jar DIY tutorial

3. I hot glued a coordinating ribbon to the jar top and added a wax seal. You can use a cosmetic jewelry pin or a button, something that you looks nice to cover the cut end of the ribbon.

4. I printed the label with heavyweight matte Epson paper  8″x10″ .  I used the high quality printing option, to make the labels look the best. I cut the labels  and used the hot glue gun to attach to the jar.

5. I used colorful Sharpies to write the notes.  Add the filler to the jar and place the notes on top.

This happy jar gift idea is perfect for an Anniversary, Birthday, Sympathy, Wedding or Holidays . While they are all filled with either plain cards, memories or quotes, be creative! You can add a gift card or small gifts or candy to the jar.

Add things that are special to your relationships…

I designed 4 downloadable designs on a sheet for four different occasions.

Tips For Creating A Positivity Jar

  • Post author: rita

Positivity is the key to a happy and healthy life.

A positive mindset has a slew of mental and physical health benefits ; from lower levels of stress to better cardiovascular health.

And while it might seem difficult at times to achieve profound happiness, there are a ton of different ways to increase the positivity in your life.

Positivity jars, for example, are a great and simple way to remember and reflect upon the good and happy times in your life.

What Is A Positivity Jar?

A positivity jar is simply a jar filled with anything positive. This can be memories, quotes, affirmations; whatever makes you feel good.

By putting the positive memories down on paper, you will have them for reflection during times where things might not feel so positive.

If you’re looking for inspiration or a place to start, we’ve provided a few ideas below for what you can include in your positivity jar.

What To Include In Your Jar

Inspirational quotes are a great change your mindset and induce more positive thinking.

This is because they allow us to step away from our own minds and see the world from the lens of others.

By simply reading words of positivity, our mindset will begin to naturally reflect those words.

Affirmations

creative things to write in a happy jar

Similar to compliments, affirmations are positive words or phrases used to uplift oneself.

For your positivity jar, you’ll want to use self-love and gratitude affirmations.

Some examples are “I am worthy of love and happiness,” or, “At this moment, I feel joy.”

Write them down at least 3 times in a row before tossing them in your jar. The more you repeat them, the more effective they will be.

One of the best ways to utilize happiness jars is through memories.

Each and every time something good happens to you, write it down and toss it in the jar.

And if you sit down to work on your jar and a specific memory from 10 years ago comes to mind, that’s cool too. As long as the memory makes you smile, write it down.

Goals are important because they give us something to strive for even when times are tough.

For the positivity jar, these goals can be as small or as big as you want.

We would, however, recommend including a few that you know you can achieve soon. This will leave room for you to feel accomplished when you go back to your jar later on.

You may also wish to write down goals you’ve already achieved.

If you meet and new and interesting person, write it down.

Include everything you liked about them and at least one interesting quality that stood out to you.

It can be as specific or as vague as you please. The important part is that you are recognizing and appreciating positive qualities in others.

You’ve probably heard the saying pictures are worth a thousand words.

When it comes to positivity jars, visuals are a great way to remember happy memories without having to write anything at all.

If you have photos of things that make you smile, or from times that made you smile, include them in your jar.

Looking at them, later on, will remind you of the happy times and subsequently bring more happiness to the present moment.

Once your jar is full, you can begin looking back on it.

Pull out a new piece each morning, or whenever you’re feeling down to remind you of the good things in life.

Positivity jars also make great gifts for others. If your friend or family member is going through a tough time, try filling up a jar with things you love about them.

You can include memories, compliments, and positive quotes that remind you of that person.

This will help them to feel thought of, cared for, and loved each and every time they reach into the jar.

  • 14 Awesome Mason Jar Gift Ideas For The Perfect Easy Gift

A couple of years ago, one of my close friends gave me a memory jar gift for Christmas. She had told me about doing it herself and it sounded like a great idea.

But, life got in the way and I never got around to actually organizing one for my own family.

I had made something similar as a Mother’s day craft where I presented my mum with a little jar filled with all the things that I loved about her.

As far as gift’s go, this is probably one of the most treasured one’s she has ever received.

I had also made a Valentine’s day love jar for my husband which I also filled with 10 things I loved about him. Once again it was a great success.

Yet, despite making these love jars for my family, I had never actually made a memory jar. I was therefore thrilled when she gave it to me, and it turned out to be the best Christmas gift.

What could be a better gift than recording and storing memories of your precious family!

Now that we have started our memory jar, we are going to keep it going year after year.

If you have been thinking about starting one, don’t delay any longer.

Start your memory jar NOW and keep those memories alive forever.

What Is A Memory Jar?

The concept of a memory jar is incredibly simple.

A memory jar is a way of recording everything that has happened for you and your family in a particular year, and keeping all those memories stored together in a sweet little jar.

I used to write things that happened in my diary.

For example, the first time my child walked, or the first word they said.

That system can however become quite messy and a memory jar is a great alternative way of keeping all those memories together.

How To Create A Memory Jar

Even though the year has started, it is not to late to start your memory jar for this year.

All you need to do is grab yourself a mason jar , some sticky notes and print off the free printable which I have designed for you.

Scroll down to the Christmas section, and you will find these printables under the title”New Years Memory Jar”.

Click on the “download” link for the PDF to open up for you.

Secure the printable of the side of the jar with double sided sticky tape and you are done!

I have designed two printable’s, so choose the one that you love the most.

Take Me To These FREE Printables NOW

Even if you don’t actually get your jar until next week, it really doesn’t matter.

The important thing is starting it, and then keeping it going for the whole year.

How Does The Memory Jar Work?

Find a simple mason jar and then use the free printable to decorate it with.

If you wish, you can add a nice ribbon around the jar, but you can make this as decorative or as simple as you wish.

Using some small sticky notes, write down memorable things as they happen during the year and then add them to the jar.

Continue recording your memories throughout the year and then on new years eve or new years day, sit down as a family and read out each of your memories one by one.

This is also a wonderful tradition to start with your family and a great way to have some quality time together at the beginning or end of a year.

It’s amazing how much you would have forgotten throughout the year, and the amount of smiles and laughs that are created when the jar contents are read is worth it’s weight in gold.

One all your memories have been read, collect them together and place them in an envelope to store away safely.  Your jar can now be used for a whole new year of memories.

I love how mason jars can be used in such awesome and different ways.

For example, a jar to give on Father’s day including lots of different activities that can be enjoyed together. This is a great way of creating memories which can then be added into a memory jar.

The options for this are endless and you are only limited by your own creativity.

What Should I Record In My Memory Jar?

Don’t get too hung up on what you should write down, because the little things are just as good as major events.

In fact, the little things are probably more important.

It is very easy to remember major events such as shows you went to see.

However will you remember the time when your two kids were playing beautifully together in their bedroom, and your daughter was practicing her hairdressing skills on her younger brother before school?

(Guess what was happening in our house this morning, and now has it’s little memory stored away nicely in a jar!).

Those are the moments that you easily forget in the hustle or life, and those are the moments that you want to record.

But in case you need a few tips, here are some great ideas for memories that you might like to record.

  • Daily blessings
  • Achievements in school, kindy, after school activities
  • Big moments such as the first tooth lost, first step etc
  • Things that made you laugh
  • The best thing that happened at school today (in your kids perspective)
  • Something you found beautiful in nature
  • A surprise gift
  • Compliments you received
  • A new joke that made you laugh!
  • Something that happened unexpectedly and made you smile

A Few Tips For Making Your Memory Jar Successful

  • Let your kids be involved –  Don’t stress out about trying to make this neat! If your kids want to write down a memory in their writing, which might not be spelt correctly, then let them. Their writing is a memory in itself!
  • Keep the jar in view at all times – Remember the saying “out of sight, out of mind”? Well this is especially true with a memory jar. If you place it tucked away in a cupboard, that is exactly where it will stay until the end of the year. You need to keep your memory jar in view, so that you don’t actually have to ‘think’ about going to grab it.
  • Keep a pen and notes next to the jar – If you don’t have these easily accessible, guess what will happen?  Nothing! It might seem like a silly thing, but if you don’t have them handy right away, the effort to go and find a pen will stop that memory right there. Keep the pen in the jar if you wish.
  • Write a date on the memory – When you add the memory, place a date on it too. This will help with remembering when certain things happened, especially when it might be as important as something like a first tooth lost!

Give A Memory Jar Gift

Do you love the idea of giving your memory jar as a gift?

I have made that super easy for you, and I have included a memory jar instruction sheet for you to print.

If you would like to pass on a memory jar gift, simply print off the instruction sheet and hand it over with the jar. Maybe tie a pretty ribbon around the instruction sheet and pop it in the jar.

It would also be a lovely idea to include a nice pen and a stack of mini notes to help them get started.

This is a great way of helping your friends and family share a wonderful experience together.

Have you ever completed a memory jar?

What types of memories did you record?

Hi Maria. Sorry to hear you are having trouble with this.

When you click on the link to download the printable, it will take you to a subscribers page. From here you should see everything that is in the free printable library. At this point you will want to scroll down the page until you reach “Christmas Printable’s”

The memory jar printable’s are on the second row under the Christmas Printable’s title, 3rd from the left. You should then see a picture of the memory jar and underneath you will see “view post” and “download”.

Clicking on “view post” will bring you back to this page.

Clicking on “Download” will open up the PDF in a new tab and you can save and print directly from there.

As you are now on the subscriber’s page, you can download ANY of the printable’s you see here. Everything has been placed under titled section to help you navigate what you are looking for.

I hope this helps.

If you are still having trouble or you do not see what I am describing, please shoot me an email at [email protected]

I hate to sound stupid and I read all the comments that had to do with the Memory Jar. I am a subscriber and I do not see a box where it says download here. Or anything else. How do I get the free printables?

November 22, 2018 at 11:08 pm

No question is a stupid one!

As a subscriber you should be able to see all the free printables available on this page: https://smartpartyplanning.com/subscribers-free-printables/ Is this opening up for you?

If you scroll down to “Christmas Printables” you will see a picture of the memory jar in the second row. Underneath the picture you will see the words “Download”. If you click on that, the PDF will open up in a new window for you.

If you are still not having any luck, please email me at [email protected]

JAR IDEA FOR OTHER RELATIONSHIPS

(Extra tips for sharing your clear intentions)

  • The most common love on earth is between a mother and child. Full disclosure, I have never received a MOTHER-CHILD JAR and haven't gifted my children with one either. This is the perfect reason for me (and you) to make a love jar for the next time there is a celebration.
  • Surprise an incredibly special person in your life with words to describe your specific kind of love.
  • Make valentine's day gifts jars for friends and family.
  • Write good things you Mom has taught you and share it with her on Mother's Day .
  • Share positive energy in your workplace and thank a co-worker with a list of what-we-like-about-You's.
  • Cast effective love spells on yours and make a new pot with your own name on it . Jot down milestones, happy happenings, and the most beautiful things you are grateful for!
  • Another great idea is to make a travel jar with copies of photos and notes to remember good times.

HOW TO MAKE THE HEART LOVE NOTES:

This is an easy DIY project that won't break the bank either.

  • Create heart shaped paper cut-outs with your punch, or
  • if you don't have any of the supplies, just cut heart shapes with your scissors.
  • Who says it should be heart shapes...you can even cut out some letters from a magazine or something!
  • Cut an old T-shirt in strips and wind it around the lid - with a rose from the garden maybe...

IF YOU ARE REALLY NEW TO THIS - THIS IS WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

Cardstock , cut-outs, or a plain piece of paper, like  here

Sharpie pens  (the fine tips work better) or any  decorative pens

Heart Shape Punch

Double-sided tape

Ribbon / Twine

Scraps of fabric or Felt

White string if this is a peace offering !

Pretty jar - you may not take on a too big a jar...because you will end up with 1001 notes (hint-hint)!

in conclusion

To Love and be Loved is one of the great commandments and most enjoyable experiences in life.

It is demanding work though.

The secret is to never give up.

Love with all your heart!

Remember, the best thing about life is that big things happen when you are having fun!
