LIMCA BOOK OF RECORDS RULES AND GUIDELINES

about india book of records

Limca Book of Record s ( 'LBR' ) as a record-keeping publication, has been compiling records since 1987 and has seen over 30 editions. It is India's first and longest continuously published book of records.

It is, however, a private book, run and managed by a private organization with no public funding whatsoever. The retail price is also subsidized by the owner Coca-Cola India Private Limited (‘CCIPL'). The LBR also accepts absolutely no funding or payment or any other charges from record applicants or record holders for entries or for processing or for publication acceptance.

Consequently, it is important to understand that all decisions are taken by applying a set of standards that are specific and stringent, but equally are subjective, and based on what the editors and staff of LBR and Consultants (' LBR Team') think are most suitable for the book. And that decision is solely LBR 's and not answerable to or affected by any other individual, entity or by what another entity may do or accept.

I. INTRODUCTION:

LBR is a catalogue of achievements made by Indians. It catalogues unique milestones and landmarks including, but not limited to, firsts, bests, mosts, inventions, discoveries, and honours and awards received, by Indians at home or abroad in all fields – both human and natural – that can be qualified in superlatives and that conform to the prevailing editorial policy in force during any year.

While this is primarily a catalogue of superlatives and achievements, it is also a book of records, and a work of reference, and therefore in the spirit of empirical record-keeping, will record other milestones that may be negative or not celebratory or laudatory but are notable, such as 'longest trial in a court of law' or records pertaining to disasters or crime. Any such record is a statement of fact on record, and is not meant to downplay any entity nor encourage anyone to attempt to beat such records.

LBR encompasses an extensive range of information and is thus divided into several chapters and record categories. Prospective entries under these chapters and categories may include, but are not limited to, any of the following headings – a record, a quantifiable skill, a superlative or historical landmark/phenomenon/man-made or natural event/process/structure considered as remarkable as a record by the LBR Team.

Anyone with a reasonable claim for a record may write to LBR for possible inclusion (subject to acceptance by LBR criteria).

Entry into LBR and attempt of any record are subject to compliance with the general Terms and Conditions (the 'Terms') as well as the specific rules and guidelines applicable to each type of record attempt or claim (the 'Attempt'). Where pre-existing terms do not exist to cover a particular record or Claim, a relevant policy shall be decided by the LBR Team and that shall be binding. Earlier policies and parameters go under continuous review and modifications, and the LBR Team is not bound to any previously existing parameters.

Individuals or groups interested in attempting to set or break a record must understand and accept general policy and study the Terms and the specific rules and guidelines applicable to the Attempt, and sign the Disclaimer and Indemnity Form (available before the commencement of any Attempt) in order to be considered for inclusion in LBR . Records already set and sent for inclusion post-facto are also bound by all the rules and guidelines; and acceptance of all Terms and Conditions is a necessary qualifier to any record being accepted.

All Terms, rules and guidelines apply to a person/persons making a record Attempt ('Applicant'/'Applicants') who sends an Application to LBR as well as any and every person/persons ('Participant'/'Participants') part of such an Attempt (for example, in an Attempt by a group or organization).

LBR is owned by CCIPL, which reserves the right to modify these Terms and any other rules and guidelines established in relation to an Attempt or general policy. CCIPL does not implement or involve itself in editorial policy and does not process submissions. LBR is collated and published by publishers Hachette Book Publishing India Pvt Ltd/Hachette India who will process the entries, make all decisions on acceptance and inclusion, and publish the book autonomously as is required for an independent book of records. Publication dates and content design are decided and implemented in conjunction with CCIPL.

All such modificationsof Terms and Conditions and policy will be updated on the website: https://www.coca-colaindia.com/limca-book-of-records and anyone attempting to enter their record in LBR must review the Terms and the corresponding rules for each Attempt regularly to remain informed of any changes or modifications therein.

LBR and its representatives do NOT charge any fee or accept any money for the application, review, processing or acceptance of records [please see clauses 111(17) and 111(18) of 'General Guidelines' pertaining to certificates and discount on sale of copies to Applicants].

II. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

  • The Applicant should be a resident Indian or NRI/OCI, and must submit ID and residence proofs and other documents as required by law to establish this.
  • The Applicant must have read and consented to the Terms, the specific rules and guidelines applicable to the Attempt, and must have signed and submitted the Disclaimer and Indemnity Form before undertaking the Attempt.
  • LBR does not accept applications of children below 13 years except in certain memory-related categories, select skill and art-based categories, and those under certain national and international Sports categories as decided by the LBR Team, and as per certification by relevant national and international sports organizations and authorities. The Applicant must fall in one of the two age groups, as specified below, and must adhere to the eligibility criteria of that age group.
  • Age Group I – Between 13 years and up to 18 years
  • Age Group II – Above 18 years

Age Group I:

  • An Applicant undertaking an Attempt under this age group must be older than thirteen (13) years and younger than or up to eighteen (18) years at the time of the Attempt.
  • Consent from a parent or legal guardian must be submitted, after such parent or legal guardian has read the Terms as provided and consented to the same. The parent or legal guardian is also required to have read and consented to the Disclaimer and Indemnity Form, and provided a Certificate of Medical Fitness, signed and stamped by a certified doctor, in certain Attempts as decided and indicated by the LBR Team, and any other rules specified in relation to the category of the Attempt, before undertaking the Attempt.
  • Certain categories of records may not be permitted for Applicants from this age group, as may be notified by CCIPL and/or LBR from time to time. Any record in this age group must be cleared with LBR before it occurs to see if it will be considered suitable as a record entry and LBR 's decision shall be final regarding its own criteria for inclusion and safety.
  • Attempts that are detrimental to the health of such persons, or that are potentially dangerous, or that are in violation of any law in force, will not be accepted for entry in LBR .
  • Any Attempt by minors beyond 15 minutes will be considered as endurance and would lead to the rejection of the claim. Any record attempt below that time duration (or even if the activity is strenuous within that time frame) that the LBR Team deems as stressful or strenuous for a minor, or as dangerous, harmful or injurious in any other way, may also be rejected at the discretion of the LBR Team.
  • Guardians/parents must sign a Disclaimer and Indemnity Form assuring against any exertion, stress or harm caused to the minor record applicant and indemnifying LBR and CCIPL against any such occurrence.
  • Memory records are available to this age group and subject to the decision of the LBR Team and representatives of LBR .
  • Certain records, such as the lightest/heaviest baby born or a medical feat performed on a child below 13 years may be accepted at the discretion of the LBR Team under the Medical Sciences chapter, wherein the child/baby itself is not an active actor in the record.

Age Group II:

  • The Applicant must be above eighteen (18) years of age.
  • The Applicant must have carefully read and consented to the Terms, and the specific rules and guidelines set down for the Attempt, and submitted the Disclaimer and Indemnity Form before engaging in the Attempt as well as a Certificate of Medical Fitness (with the medical practitioner's registration number mentioned on it) to attempt any physical feat or one involving mental exertion, or one deemed so by the LBR Team.

III. GENERAL GUIDELINES:

  • Standard norms and rules should be adhered to while setting national and world records. In some cases there may be additional event-specific norms that need to be observed.
  • The onus of proving a record claim rests on the Applicant. The claim, signed by the Applicant, should be backed by adequate and satisfactory documents without which it will not be accepted. Materials submitted as supporting evidence, like press clippings, audio/videotapes, flash/pen drives, CDs and photographs, become the property of the publisher Hachette Book Publishing India Pvt Ltd/ Hachette India and the Copyright Owner, but only copies should be submitted with the originals kept safe by the claimant for Life after the claim has been accepted [see also Section V (Evidence)]. Forms such as the Application Form duly signed by the Applicant and validating/witnessing authorities as indicated by the representatives of LBR and/or the rules and guidelines need to be submitted in the original (hard copy) and a copy retained by the applicant/applicants for Life after the claim has been accepted. LBR does not take any responsibility for lost material/s if the record is questioned or objected to by any person. In case of a query or objection raised, the responsibility of providing the evidence again for reverification [see also Reverification of Evidence clause V(15)] and all expenditures therein lies with the Applicant.
  • It is not necessary or binding for someone from LBR to be present at the record-making event, but proper authentication of the same must be ensured. Authentication should be by someone who is competent and in a responsible position, such as a Gazetted Officer, District Magistrate or Principal of a school/college, unless specified otherwise.
  • Update yourself with the latest record before any Attempt to break it. Potential record-breakers should inform LBR at least 30 days in advance about the record Attempt details and procedure in order to avoid disqualification on technicalities.
  • Confirmation from consultants are not to be treated as final. The final confirmations are only issued by the LBR Editorial Team. You are advised to check the existing record with the LBR Team just prior your attempt as well, so that you may be intimated of any updates.
  • While breaking an existing record, follow the rules, technical specifications and set precedents. For example, the needle-threading record specifies a no. 13 needle. Do not use any other needle.
  • Records should be absolute and not technical offshoots. For example, if one is setting a typing record, it is assumed that it is normal typing. One-finger or two-finger typing will not be registered asseparate records. Records have to be quantifiable and comparable, and overly specific variables may not be considered.
  • While LBR does accept new categories, these will have to be of high interest value and have definable and comparable parameters, and these are entirely subject to the LBR Team's decision. For example, even if no record exists, a two-hour marathon for guitar playing will not be accepted.
  • Not every record set by women is eligible for entry as the subcategory 'First woman to...'
  • Collections should have a basic 'standard'. Limited numbers of obscure articles may not be accepted unless of exceptional interest value, and that shall be decided upon by the LBR Team.
  • For distance records, only basic types of vehicles are recognized: four-wheelers and plus, two-wheelers, geared bicycles, gearless bicycles, tandem bicycles and electric vehicles. We make no differentiation between engine capacities of one kind of vehicles in speed or 'fastest' records. In terms of endurance, for instance, if the category is Four Corners of India by a two-wheeler, then motorcycles of any cc and scooters are considered under the same category. To ensure measurability, distance against time will be the criterion. Cross country or intra-country motoring/cycling or other vehicular records must get prior clearance from us for inclusion. In non-speed records, vehicles may be categorized according to engine capacity: below 60cc; 61–100cc; 101–350cc; 350–500cc and above 500cc.
  • Before attempting any driving record, Applicants have to submit a copy of the following document/documents, as applicable, attested by a Gazetted Officer, Notary Public: their valid driving licence/earlier experience certificate in case of motor sport or bicycling record; pilot's licence/aero sports course certificate/earlier experience certificate in case of aero sports record; mountaineering/mountain sports course certificate/earlier experience certificate in case of a mountain sports record; and water sports course certificate/earlier experience certificate in case of a water sports record to the LBR office for prior approval.
  • The LBR Team would like all claimants to send in supporting photographs. In physical evidence with documents or photographs, do not staple them to your entry. Use detachable clips. In cases where applicable and as indicated by the LBR Team, time- and date-stamped video recordings of the Attempt must be provided.
  • Attempts that may result in physical harm, such as 'hitting head against a wall' or mental/emotional duress for the applicant, such as 'isolating oneself for 100 days' will not be considered and are entirely the decision of the LBR Team.
  • Any record in the book may be reconsidered or dropped without prior intimation.
  • Certificates issued are valid only for the date or period specified and will be considered ended if surpassed by a new record, and/or change in criteria, measuring methods, or if disputed and found to be erroneous on reverification [see clause V(15)].
  • For reasons of space or any other reasons, a confirmed entry may be dropped at the time of going to press. The LBR Team may inform the Applicant of the change in status but is not bound to do so.
  • Record holders within India are entitled to ONE complimentary copy of their certificate and its postage, if eligible, and further copies need to be ordered by writing to the LBR Team and on payment (including GST) as indicated. Record holders outside India are entitled to ONE complimentary copy of their certificate but will need to pay courier and/or postal charges (including applicable taxes/surcharges). Requests for the reissue of older certificates issued in previous years are considered on a case-by-case basis and such certificates reissued on payment within reasonable time as per printing schedules provided the record is accessible in our archived editions.
  • Record holders are not entitled to any remuneration or free copies of Limca Book of Records . They may, however, avail a 30% discount on the cover price of the book by writing to the LBR Team and following the payment process.
  • If new record holders do not receive their certificate by two months after the release of the book, please contact the LBR office.
  • The LBR Team reserves the sole right to decide on the suitability of all records for inclusion in the book. The Team's decision on all such matters is final. Any attempt to browbeat or threaten the LBR Team or representatives shall result in instant disqualification.

ATTEMPTS BY MINORS:

  • Records that are against the law (e.g., driving at an age not qualified for licence) or those that require excessive physical exertion (like a marathon) detrimental to a minor's health will not be accepted.

OBJECTIONS/DISCREPANCIES:

  • Any typographical error or inaccuracy in the statement of a record or certificate should be pointed out by the record holder immediately.
  • Objections raised by any person regarding any published entry shall be entertained only within a period of three (3) years from the date of publication or acceptance/certification of a record/entry. However, discrepancies identified by the LBR Team syo moto shall be addressed regardless of passage of time. Applicants must note that, in accordance with the prevailing laws, there is no limitation in respect of criminal liability should it arise.

CHAPTERS AND CATEGORIES:

LBR reserves the right to include or exclude any chapter or category, or section or record category as otherwise listed below and is under no obligation to publish all or any of the listed chapters or categories in LBR or any of its publications.

The list provided here is only for illustrative and explanatory reasons, and for the clarity of persons seeking to engage in an Attempt. Further, the following list only consists of chapters and categories that have been published in previous editions and is non-exhaustive. LBR may, at its sole discretion, include additional chapters or categories, delete a chapter or category, or even merge two or more chapters or categories as the LBR Team deems appropriate. Any such addition, deletion or merging of chapters or categories creates no obligation on the LBR Team's and/or CCIPL's part to inform any person making an Attempt of such addition, deletion or merger. Records after acceptance may also be changed or deleted if suitable circumstances warrant it, and this also shall be the sole decision of the LBR Team.

THE HUMAN STORY

  • Records involving alcohol consumption as an event or performance measure will not be considered.
  • Yoga or endurance, or speed or strength records are only for Age Group II unless specifically permitted otherwise in writing.
  • Applicants from Age Group I can perform for a maximum of 15 minutes in mass participation records involving strength, speed or performance. Any Attempt longer than that is be considered endurance on the part of minors and rejected. In such records attempting mosts in terms of numbers, minors will not be counted, such as in a two-hour-long dance performance. The allowance may depend upon the nature of the Attempt. For example – minor Applicants/Participants might participate in an Attempt involving reading for more than 15 minutes but will not be allowed at any mass physical feat claim for more than that time period - such as most Participants performing the plank together. Such applications, if accepted by the LBR Team, will need a Medical Fitness Certificate confirming that no harm will be caused to the Applicant/Participant by such an Attempt.
  • A new section for virtual records has been added from this edition onwards. The current categories are for single sessions conducted on a single platform.
  • We do not have categories related to religious traditions and ceremonies, unless they form general records.
  • Records indicating or involving harm to physical or mental health will not be considered, such as 'most blood donated in a day'.
  • There are no set parameters of the claim regarding fastest construction as each construction would have multiple aspects of difference and the LBR Team does not wish to encourage the fastest construction of public services or private buildings.

MEDIA AND COMMUNICATIONS

Agriculture, science and technology, visual arts.

  • The film should have been cleared by the Central Board for Film Certification (CBFC) and given a censor certificate.
  • Certification requirements for OTT content/films/drama series will be decided on a case-by-case basis and as per the laws of the land and relevant authorities/organizations.
  • The film should be screened at film festivals or at public theatres/auditoriums.
  • No miniature paintings in any medium are considered in this chapter currently. They may be eligible for entry in the Human Story chapter depending on parameters.
  • All rangoli, alpana and kolam records have been categorized under one category of 'Traditional floor art'.
  • Considering that art is a subjective concept, the LBR Team reserves the final decision regarding the artwork so produced. Random repetition of patterns, block colour patches, strokes of paint, or smearing paint randomly on the canvas would lead to the rejection of the claim. Similarly, geometric shapes, haphazard lines and arbitrary usage of colour would also lead to rejection. The artwork so produced should have a coherent sense of pattern, colour and tone. It should depict a certain level of skill and creation of aesthetics. For photography claims, repetitive, fragmented and haphazard images would not be considered. The images should have a coherent sense of posture, alignment and lighting.
  • The largest art competition would be a single-day category following the rules of continuous events and being a maximum of 12 hours.
  • Portrait categories: A portrait should have only a single person in the painting/mosaic. A portrait is considered to be a drawing/painting of the head and shoulder of a person for the purposes of record claims.
  • Largest origami mosaic - solo/ group
  • Single-item origami (single sheet, single item)> A)Tallest/Longest; B) Widest
  • Multiple-item origami (multiple sheets, multiple items)> A) Tallest - solo/group; B) Widest - solo/ group
  • Marathon origami (single day, single venue) - solo
  • Most towel origami made - solo/group - in 1 hour
  • Largest collection of carved pencils
  • Most pencil carvings done – single day
  • Most pencil carvings done – 1 hour
  • Smallest pencil carving

PERFORMING ARTS

  • For all Ironman triathlon related claims, we refer to the International Triathlon Union and the Indian Triathlon Federation.
  • For swimming records, only solo as well as up to 3-person relay crossings (each covering at least 10 km) are considered. For marathon swimming – with permitted breaks, breaks of only 1.5 minutes will be allowed for each completed hour. Exceptions may be made for para swimmers or extremely remarkable records, subject to the discretion and decision of the LBR Team and Consultants.
  • A minimum altitude of 6,000 m is required to review any mountaineering claim. Claims regarding Mt Kilimanjaro (5,895 m) will not be considered in accordance with the same. All mountaineering claims must be verified by the Indian Mountaineering Foundation or a similar credible international body.
  • For road expeditions, there are separate categories for women in solo attempts and group attempts where Applicants and, if present, Participants are women.
  • A detailed logbook must be maintained with entries in chronological order. All entries in this logbook must be witnessed and authenticated by reputed individuals/competent authorities (a Gazetted Officer, District Magistrate or Principal of a school/college, unless specified otherwise). A sample sheet will be given by the LBR Team on request. Emphasis will be on events that highlight special skills.
  • In cases where applicable and as indicated by the LBR Team, time- and date-stamped videos of the Attempt must be provided.
  • Marathon (non-stop): A five-minute break for rest after every completed hour is allowed as per prevailing international norms. These breaks may be accumulated (e.g., a 15-minute break may be taken after 3 hours of non-stop action) but not added to the tally. The logbook must clearly indicate the rest breaks.
  • Virtually non-stop: Minimal breaks permitted for medical/toilet purposes but no rest breaks. Breaks are to be indicated in the logbook.
  • Continuous: Performed on a rotating or relay basis.
  • Normal: Breaks permitted as and when necessary.
  • Absolute non-stop: No breaks at all.
  • Attempts jeopardizing individual or public safety and public property are not encouraged.
  • All adventure feats/stunts/sports, etc. require prior written approval from concerned authorities.

MEDICAL SCIENCES

This chapter contains records and information from the field of medical sciences such as medical breakthroughs, medical camps, firsts and mosts in selective medical procedures, mass participations, medical tests, medical devices and equipment. Claims are acceptable only from registered medical practitioners and related to government approved medical practices and institutions, such as those affiliated to the Indian Medical Association, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and any others as deemed eligible by the LBR Team.

The LBR Team will reject any Attempts that may potentially orotherwise harm or endanger persons/patients, e.g., 'speed' related records such as 'most kidneys transplanted in a day' or 'most LASIK surgeries performed in a day' whether at a medical centre or in camps, charitable or otherwise.

Ravichandran Ashwin On Verge Of Surpassing Anil Kumble To Achieve Sensational Test Record

Ravichandran ashwin is on the verge of surpassing legendary indian cricket team spinner anil kumble to claim a sensational record..

about india book of records

Ravichandran Ashwin is on the verge of surpassing legendary Indian cricket team spinner Anil Kumble to claim a sensational record in the third Test match against England in Rajkot starting Thursday. The veteran cricketer is just five wickets away from becoming the Indian bowler with the highest Test wickets at home. Kumble currently holds the record with 350 wickets from 63 matches while Ashwin has taken 346 wickets from 57 matches. Overall, Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan holds the record with 493 wickets from 73 matches with the help of 45 five-wicket hauls and 15 ten-wicket hauls.

Meanwhile, Ashwin is just one wicket away from claiming 500 wickets in Test cricket and 3 wickets away from becoming the first Indian ever to take 100 wickets in Tests against England.

An injury-hit India could well go into the third Test against England with two debutants in domestic run-machine Sarfaraz Khan and hard-hitting keeper-batter Dhruv Chand Jurel on a track that will be quite similar to the first two Test matches.

However last match's centurion Shubman Gill however did not attend the optional training on Tuesday.

It must be noted that Gill had hurt his right index finger while fielding in the second Test in Visakhapatnam. He didn't field during the England second innings and also said that the injury isn't too serious.

With Shreyas Iyer being dropped and KL Rahul yet to recover, doors have opened for Sarfaraz, who has been one of the most prolific performers in Ranji Trophy.

In case of Jurel, it is his superior batting quality that could get him the nod ahead of Kona Bharat, who has failed to score a single half-century in seven successive Tests.

With Rajat Patidar , Sarfaraz and Jurel batting between No 4 to 7, three of the four middle order players (other being Ravindra Jadeja ) will go into the Test match with a collective experience of solitary game. Patidar made his debut in Visakhapatnam.

Hong Kong customs arrests 7 in a $1.8 billion money laundering case linked to transnational crime

HONG KONG — Hong Kong customs officials have arrested seven people linked to the territory’s largest ever money laundering case, involving about 14 billion Hong Kong dollars ($1.8 billion) some of it linked to a scam case in India.

The seven local residents, aged between 23 and 74, were part of a large-scale transnational syndicate that used various shell companies and bank accounts to transfer large sums from overseas to the city under the guise of running international trading businesses, customs officials said Friday.

One account once received as much as 100 million Hong Kong dollars ($12.8 million) on a single day, they said.

Ip Tung-ching, the head of customs financial investigation bureau, said 2.9 billion Hong Kong dollars ($371 million) of the total was suspected to be linked to a scam case involving a mobile application in India. But she did not say which application it was.

Some of those arrested were non-Chinese residents of Hong Kong, she said without giving details.

Authorities believe the syndicate received remittances from India in name of exporting electronic devices, diamonds, gems and precious metals, Ip said. Proceeds were then transferred to bank accounts in Hong Kong for money laundering.

“These acts of money laundering provide protective umbrellas for the illegal profits of criminals,” she said.

Law enforcement in Hong Kong, India and elsewhere cooperated in carrying out the operation, enabling its success, Ip said.

Yu Yiu-wing, the bureau’s divisional commander, said officers exchanged intelligence with Indian authorities and found some of the money came from two jewelry companies that Indian authorities said were connected to the scam.

A 34-year-old Hong Kong resident arrested in late January is suspected to be the syndicate’s mastermind, she said.

Officials have confiscated electronic devices, documents, and over 8,000 carats of suspected synthetic gem stones apparently meant for export to India.

The investigation was continuing.

The previous record money laundering case involved about 6 billion Hong Kong dollars ($767 million) and arrests of nine people in January 2023.

  • Sarfaraz Khan blasted seven fours and a six to reach his 50 in 48 balls
  • Sarfaraz Khan equalled Hardik Pandya's India record with 48-ball 50

Sarfaraz Khan shone on his Test debut with a blazing fifty on Day 1 of the third Test against England in Rajkot on Wednesday. The 26-year-old batter from Mumbai showcased an aggressive brand of cricket that left spectators and commentators alike in awe. With a flurry of boundaries, including a six, Sarfaraz raced to his maiden fifty in just 48 balls, tying the record for the joint-fastest fifty by an Indian batter on debut in Test cricket since World War II.

Rajkot Test, Day 1 Scorecard

Facing the pace of Mark Wood, Sarfaraz initially had to navigate a challenging start, but once the spinners came on, his dominance was evident. England's captain Ben Stokes' decision to keep an attacking field worked in Sarfaraz's favor, allowing him to confidently execute his shots over the fielders. With precise timing and a fearless approach, Sarfaraz accumulated seven boundaries and dispatched a beautifully struck six straight down the ground. This rapid fifty not only brought excitement to the spectators but also propelled India past the 300-run mark with only four wickets down.

Kansas City Chiefs parade shooting stemmed from personal dispute, police say: Live updates

A personal dispute between several people erupted in gunfire at a packed celebration of the Kansas City Chiefs' Super Bowl victory, injuring over 20 people and killing a mother of two, authorities said Thursday.

Nearly 1 million people were estimated to have been in downtown Kansas City on Wednesday when gunshots sent scores of people running for cover around 2 p.m. outside Union Station, a historic depot. Twenty-two people ages 8-47 were wounded by gunfire, said Kansas City, Missouri, Police Chief Stacey Graves at a news conference. About half of the victims are under the age of 16, Graves said.

Kansas City police officer Alayna Gonzalez told USA TODAY that officers detained three juveniles but have released one who they determined wasn’t involved. Officers are working with juvenile prosecutors to “review investigative findings and determine applicable charges," Gonzalez said.

One of the three people who was questioned by law enforcement was tackled by bystanders before being detained, Gonzalez said. More than 800 officers were providing security for the event. Graves noted several firearms were recovered from the scene.

Investigators were working to determine "the involvement of others," Graves said, adding that "there was no nexus to terrorism or home-grown violent extremism."

Lisa Lopez-Galvan , a mother of two and a beloved host of "Taste of Tejano," was killed in the shooting, radio station KKFI confirmed. “This senseless act has taken a beautiful person from her family and this KC Community," the station said in a statement.

Bullets ripped through the crowd near the end of the parade, after hundreds of thousands of fans in Kansas City's red, white and gold walked several miles through the heart of the city's downtown to Union Station, where a rally was held on an outside lawn with speeches by players and coaches.

Videos from the scene showed throngs of people running as gunfire and screams could be heard in the background. One video showed two people tackle and pin another person to the ground until officers arrived and took the person into custody.

Gun violence: Kansas City parade shooting shows gun violence danger lurks wherever people gather in US

Seven child victims of shooting released from hospital

Seven children who were treated after the shooting at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City have been released, Stephanie Meyer, the hospital's chief nursing officer, said at a press briefing on Thursday.

Meyer said nine of the eleven child victims of the shooting admitted to the hospital had suffered gunshot wounds. The youngest is aged six, she said.

Doctors expect all of the three children still in treatment to fully recover, she added.

"They are stabilized. They're doing well," Meyer said. "I think prayers and hope for them is exactly what they need."

Five gunshot victims released from Kansas City hospital

Five of the eight gunshot victims of the shooting admitted to the emergency department at University Health hospital in Kansas City have been released, Dr. Mark Steele, the hospital's chief clinical officer, said at a press conference on Thursday afternoon.

Of the three remaining, one is in stable condition, Steele said. The other two "remain in critical condition in our ICU, but they both are improving, so that's good news," he said.

Dr. Dustin Neel, a trauma surgeon, said the first victim of the shooting to arrive at the hospital is still in critical condition. He said the victim, a young man likely over 18, sustained an injury that was "90% lethal."

"Had he not made it here at fast as he had, he might not be with us now," Neel said.

Neel said some patients came to the hospital with broken bones sustained from the rush to escape the gunfire.

All victims taken to children's hospital expected to recover

Nine of 12 people taken to Children’s Mercy hospital in Kansas City after the shooting have been released as of Thursday afternoon, said Lisa Augustin, a spokesperson for the hospital. Three were still being treated and are expected to recover.

Of the 12 patients, 11 were children 6 to 15. Nine of the minors had gunshot wounds.

Police have said the youngest victim of the shooting is 8 years old.

'There was a frenzy': Wichita man tackles suspected shooter

Trey Filter, a 40-year-old lifelong Chiefs fan, joined a group effort to tackle a person who may have opened fire into the crowd of fans.

“There was a frenzy,” Filter told USA TODAY. “People were freaking out.”

Filter and his family were leaving the parade for their home in Wichita when shots first broke out, scattering the crowd. When he heard a woman shout that someone had a gun, he “just went for it."

As another man tried to restrain the suspected shooter’s hands, Filter reached underneath the man but couldn’t find any gun.

“I started hitting him in the ribs,” Filter said.

He didn’t let up until police pulled him off by his feet. Meanwhile, Filter’s wife picked up a “huge assault rifle” nearby.

Once police had the situation under control, Filter and his family didn’t stick around. “Let's get the hell out of here,” he told his wife. “We didn't know if there was more drama or what was going on.”

At least two people remain in critical condition

University Health, a hospital in Kansas City, announced on Thursday that two people with gunshot wounds remain in critical condition.

The hospital received eight of the gunshot victims. As of Thursday afternoon, five have been discharged and one was in stable condition, according to an email to USA TODAY from hospital spokesperson Leslie Carto. Four people with non-gunshot injuries were sent to the hospital; three have been sent home.

FBI creates webpage for videos of shooting

The Federal Bureau of Investigation, in collaboration with Kansas City police, set up a webpage where people with videos of the deadly shooting can share it with investigators.

The website asks users to upload files along with a short description of what is shown in the recording. The FBI, in a news release, said it is looking for any videos "from the Super Bowl shooting and any video of the shooters attempting to flee the scene."

Lisa Lopez-Galvan, mother and music aficionado, remembered

Lisa Lopez-Galvan, whose DJ name was "Lisa G, " was one of the well-known hosts of a radio show that specialized in Tejano, often called Tex-Mex, a style of music known for its blend of Mexican and U.S. influences.

For years, Lopez-Galvan, 43, listened to the "Taste of Tejano" radio show while working as a private DJ, often hired to perform at local weddings, quinceañeras and an American Legion bar. After several stints volunteering for the show, she was hired as a co-host in March 2022.

"For Lisa music is life and a source of happiness," a biography of Lopez-Galvan on the KKFI website .

Rosa Izurieta and Martha Ramirez, two childhood friends who worked with her at a staffing company, told the Associated Press Lopez-Galvan’s family is active in the Latino community and her father founded the city’s first mariachi group, Mariachi Mexico, in the 1980s.

Manny Abarca, a Jackson County legislator who knew Lopez-Galvan for over a decade, said among the things he'll remember most clearly about Lopez-Galvan is her smile.

"I have witnessed that smile across DJ equipment, and on the stage of our largest Fiesta in #KansasCity," he wrote on X . "I will not let her death go in (vain). I will legislate, I will fight and I WILL do everything in my power to change this State and City for the better."

Mental health resources

As families across Kansas City cope with the aftermath of Wednesday's shooting, local officials and groups are offering mental health resources to help the community heal.

Children's Mercy Hospital launched a guide for parents and children on mental health resources, including how to talk to kids about a traumatic event and when to seek help.

The Jackson County prosecutor's office arranged free counseling sessions and a hotline , and Kansas City has a general list of mental health resources for residents.

The American Counseling Association offers some tips for people coping in the aftermath of a shooting, including attending to self-care, keeping in touch with loved ones and maintaining practices that bring emotional relief.

Gun safety advocates push for legislative action

Gun safety advocates in Missouri are once again pressuring lawmakers to act.

Alison Shih, senior counsel at Everytown for Gun Safety, said people have become energized in the past day in calling for more gun control in Missouri. But she doesn’t have high hopes for the state Legislature to act in what she said are residents’ best interests.

“My instinct is that it's unlikely to happen unless the makeup changes, but I hope they hear the rallying cry of our people,” Shih said. “But this year is an election year and I hope Missourians can vote out politicians who aren't protecting them or acting in their best interest.”

Kansas City Police Department spokesperson Alayna Gonzalez said the city had a record-high of 182 homicides in 2023. According to the police department's daily homicide analysis , the city has had 12 homicides less than two months into 2024, which doesn't include Wednesday's shooting. This time last year, police tracked 17 homicides in Kansas City.

“We have to do something to address gun violence in this country and this state with Kansas City and St. Louis having high gun rates,” said Gwen Grant, president and CEO of the Urban League of Kansas City.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas increased the number of police officers, according to his 2024 State of the City address , which Grant said isn’t a viable solution, noting the shooting on Wednesday unfolded despite a heavy law enforcement presence.

Lucas’s office didn’t immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment.

“If we want to ensure or prevent or decrease the level of violent crime, we have to make a commitment to address the problem in a very comprehensive and systemic manner,” Grant said.

Chiefs players react to deadly shooting

Multiple Kansas City Chiefs players , some of whom spoke to the massive crowd shortly before shots were fired, took to social media to ask for prayers for the victims, thank first responders and demand gun reform.

Quarterback Patrick  Mahomes said  on X he is "praying for Kansas City" in the wake of the shooting.

"I am heartbroken over the tragedy that took place today," wrote Travis Kelce , the Chiefs' tight end. "My heart is with all who came out to celebrate with us and have been affected. KC, you mean the world to me."

Austin Reiter, the Chiefs offensive lineman said, "We are still struggling to make sense of the tragedy that happened today. Our hearts are with the victims and all those traumatized by this experience. Thank you to the police, first responders, and all those who worked together to get people out of harms way."

Charles Omenihu, defensive end, asked "When are we going to fix these gun laws? How many more people have to die to say enough is enough?" He added that "It’s too easy for the wrong people to obtain guns in America and that’s a FACT."

'Nervous, scared': People recount chaos when gunfire broke out

Kevin Sanders, 53, of Lenexa, Kansas, said he heard what sounded like firecrackers and then saw people running. After that initial flurry, calm returned, and he didn’t think much of it. But he said 10 minutes later, ambulances started showing up.

“It sucks that someone had to ruin the celebration, but we are in a big city,” Sanders said.

Ofilio Martinez, 48, said he heard shots fired a couple blocks away about 10 or 15 minutes before the gunfire near the Union Station rally.

“This is making me nervous, scared,” he said.

Gunfire broke out less than half an hour after Chiefs fans concluded their parade in celebration of their Super Bowl victory.

Crowdfunding platform GoFundMe has a page on its website of verified fundraisers to support victims of the shooting.
