Michael Connelly is a best selling American author of crime fiction and detective books. His novels have been translated into 36 languages. He was born and is the second oldest child of a property developer and a homemaker. His mother was interested in crime fiction and introduced Michael to the genre. Michael moved from Philadelphia to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Connelly’s interest in crime escalated when one day he saw a mysterious man throw something into the hedge.

He retrieved the object and it turned out to be a gun wrapped in a shirt. He went home and told his father. Connelly was introduced to and impressed by the world of police investigation. He graduated from Saint Thomas Equinas High School and majored in building trade at the University of Florida. With less than adequate grades, he went to see The Long Goodbye, based on Raymond Chandler’s book. The experience further inspired Connelly to be a writer. He read all of Chandler’s works then decided to change his educational focus to education and minor in creative writing. Connelly graduated from the University of Florida in 1980.

He began writing on crime in the Daytona Beach News Journal. He then got a job at the Fort Lauderdale News and Sun-Sentinel. He covered the rampant violence and chaos of the south Florida cocaine wars. In 1984 he married Linda McCaleb, whom he met in college. Connelly was placed as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize interviewing survivors of the plane crash of Delta Flight 191 in 1986. This led to him landing a job at the Los Angeles Times and moved to California in 1987.

Connelly visited the apartments featured in The Long Goodbye with Phillip Marlowe. Eventually he rented an apartment when they became available to write in. In 1992 Connelly sold his first novel The Black Echo to Little, Brown. It features one of Connelly’s recurring characters, Hieronymous Harry Bosch, Los Angeles Police Department Detective. Bosch became an orphan at age 11 when his mother, a prostitute was murdered. Connelly wrote three more novels in the Bosch series while still a reporter.

After completing The Black Ice, The Concrete Blonde, and The Last Coyote, Connelly chose to write full time and quit his day job. Connelly wrote The Poet featuring a different main character in 1996. The main character was Jack McEvoy, a journalist. In 1998, he published Blood Work, a story about Terry McCaleb, an FBI Agent. It was made into a Hollywood movie directed by and starring Clint Eastwood as McEvoy in 2002. It costars Jeff Daniels as Buddy Noone and Anjelica Huston as Dr. Bonnie Fox.

Connelly also wrote the Mickey Haller series. Three of the books also feature Jack McEvoy, with one featuring Rachel Walling. The first book in the series, The Lincoln Lawyer, was published in 2005. It follows Mickey Haller, the half brother of Harry Bosch, who is a Los Angeles lawyer. Haller operates in LA, driven around in a Lincoln Towncar by a client paying off dues. Meanwhile, a wealthy real estate agent is accused of attempted murder and assault.

The plot heats up as an innocent jailed man weaves his way into the mystery whose freedom is staked on the detectives solving the case. The Lincoln Lawyer has been nominated for numerous awards. It was adapted into a 2011 film starring Matthew McConaughey and Marisa Tomei. Mickey Haller returns in the 2008 novel The Brass Verdict. Mickey has been healing since the events of the last book and has developed an addiction to painkillers.

He enters the world of law once more when an old associate is murdered. Haller gets all of his acquaintance’s workload, including an alleged double homicide done by Walter Elliott, a mogul. While Haller works on strategy, Walter admits to him that he is connected to the mob and believes they may be responsible both for the murders he is accused of but also killing Mickey’s associate Vincent. As Haller works through the clues, unexpected people come out from the woodwork.

When Walter is found dead, Haller must put the pieces together and solve a crime that won’t quit. Connelly also wrote two episodes of the science fiction drama Level 9. It aired on UPN and was broadcast in 2000. The show dealt with a secret government agency. The series aired thirteen total episodes that were sixty minutes each. Sci Fi Channel later acquired the rerun rights and aired three final episodes that had never been before shown.

A famous moment in Connelly’s career was when Bill Clinton was seen with a copy of his book The Concrete Blonde. Clinton was a big fan and it was arranged for the President and the author to meet in an airport. In 2001 Connelly left California and moved to Tampa Bay, Florida with his wife and daughter. In 2003 another Harry Bosch centric novel called Lost Light. An accompanying cd called Dark Sacred Night: The Music of Harry Bosch with jazz-themed music that the character was said to listen to.

In 2004 The Narrows was published. The Narrows coincided with a dvd release: “Blue Neon Light: Michael Connelly’s Los Angeles”. In addition to novels, Michael Connelly has published multiple short stories. He has written three collections of short stories: Angle of Investigation, Suicide Run, and Mulholland Drive. Michael wrote one non fiction book in 2006 called Crime Beat. It collected journalism from his work at the Los Angeles Times and the Sun-Sentinel.

Michael Connelly appears from time to time on the prime time detective drama Castle, starring Nathan Fillion. He plays one of Fillion’s poker buddies along with James Patterson, Stephen J. Cannell, and Dennis Lehane. From Harry Bosch to Jack McEvoy to Mickey Haller, Connelly has not tired of writing suspenseful, surprising thrillers nor exhausted his interest in crime fiction. His most recent novel has been The Gods of Guilt, the latest in the Mickey Haller series.

Half brother Harry Bosch is rumored to be making an appearance in this novel as well as Harry’s daughter, Maddie. Michael Connelly has sold over 50 million books worldwide and continues to write. He currently lives with his family in Florida.

Love watching all the series about Harry Bosch ( dvds) just been watching Bosch Legacy series 1@2 .Can’t wait to get more in series 3 when it comes out .Bloody good Det show @ best that I’ve seen . Now in my 80th year .Any idea when series 3 is coming out here to Australia?

Season 3 hasn’t been made yet although it was renewed. So it could be either later this year, or next year. There are also two spinoffs being created one with J. Edgar and one with Renee Ballard so not sure if they will air those first before Bosch Legacy.

Just finished Resurrection Walk. Couldn’t put it down; LATE night reading. . . .

It left me wondering – Is this book Connelly’s own resurrection walk?

If it is, he is retiring with a bang, not a whimper. GET IT WHILE IT’S HOT ! ! !

Void moon… shouldn’t this be included in the Bosch reading lists? It intersects on several topics… the hotel in Vegas… the probation officer… etc

Yep we have that one listed as part of the Bosch Universe.

Thank you for giving us (me) so many great stories. I am quite old and love to spend my time being entertained by the thinking and activities of the many characters in Connelly’s 30+ books…Easy to reread…Thanks

I just reread “The Law of Innocence.” What a wonderful and interesting story. I hope to see more of Mickey Haller in the future.

Thank you, Steve Cone

I fear we are saying goodbye to Bosch. I was very sad to read Desert Star. He has been a constant through the years. What a wonderful character! Thank you Michael Connelly!!!!

Maybe Bosch can beat that cancer with one more book. He’s certainly my favorite detective.

I hope Bosch can beat this. He is definitely my fav. I can’t wait for a new book.

Re-discivered your stories . I am in the process of visiting books that i have read ,and am happy to report that Mr. Bosch is high on the list of enjoyable re-reads. looking forward to new adventures. thank you. Robert

LOVE YOUR WRITING !!! Please don’t ever stop writing about Harry Bosch, Mickey Haller, Renee’ Ballard or Jack McEvoy. Can’t get enough. Don’t worry about Bosch getting so old he has to die, he could always come back as Maddie’s spiritual mentor during stressful times.

Really gripping books, cannot put down it holds you tight.Have got all the “Harry Bosch” books and never get fed up of reading them. I love crime books, but Michael Connelly is buy far the best. Leaves James. Patterson,Lee child’s and others standing.

Don’t kill off Harry Bosch. We followed him through the years and at 70+ he still is active and has a detectives mind and has his own way of solving crimes. We need Harry Bosch.

Great author bio! Thanks.

The problem with the new series female lead, is that she’s not the female lead we were always promised as his fans. He was supposed to promote Maddie to the lead.

This is three years later, and you don’t seem to understand that Connelly has a logistics problem that he has no choice about working around. Namely that Bosch is 70 years old, and no longer part of any police force; ergo, he can’t carry the series by himself anymore since he’s now relegated to being a sort-of consultant on Renee’s cases.

Meanwhile, Maddie is in college in pursuit of a psychology degree. If we go by the timeline of her being born sometime after Angels Flight in 1999, that means she’s now no more than 21 y/o, and thus not yet ready to join the LAPD because she still has at least another year of college before she would join the force.

There’s a hitch though, with that: Maddie is moving away from being a cop like her dad to becoming a counselor of some kind. If she wants to do that for the LAPD, she will need a PhD, and that means another 5 years of grad school. I don’t know if Connelly will go there, but it depends on where he’s taking her as a character.

Either way, Connelly has needed a character who’s on the LAPD force right now to help transition from Harry to Maddie joining the force. Hence, Renee Ballard. She’ll fill in the gap until Maddie is ready to take over.

I agree, and I’m also getting the sense that Maddie’s told is going to be from another POV of the criminal justice system. You’ve got Bosch and Ballard on the LEO side, Haller on he defense attorney side, as I think Maddie is going to expand the characters to having a POV from that of a prosecutor and we will see her climb the ranks of the DA office maybe even working along side Haller’s daughter Haylee (whose mom was a prosecutor or Maddie and Haylee could be on opposite sides of Haylee ends up on the defense side like her dad. Now matter what, I can’t wait to see how their characters develop and the paths they take. My biggest fear is when Bosch (who is 70+ yrs old now) eventually kicks the bucket and no longer a character 🙁

You really need to proof this document! Too many mistakes for a writer’s site.

Harry Bosch is an LAPD homicide detective who keeps appearing in many of Connelly’s books. The very first novel, The Black Echo, was released in 1992 and was also the first novel Connelly had published.

In the first story of the series, a body is discovered dumped inside Mulholland Dam, and the detective realizes that this isn’t a random killing.

The reason behind this is that the victim was a man who had fought alongside Bosch in a terrifying underground war, and the detective must now relive the horrors of his past.

He is made to encounter several dangerous elements, ranging from a heist in the dark corners of the city to bleak alleys that no one dares to step foot in. Bosch realizes that he has enemies within his workplace and that he must make the difficult choice between revenge and justice.

In The Black Ice, which is the second book in the series, Bosch is handed a case where he doesn’t just have to look for clues but also the thread that binds them together.

Haller is known as the Lincoln Lawyer because he does his work from the backseat of his Lincoln Town Car. Haller’s client list is a potpourri of surprises, including drug dealers, con artists, bikers, and drunk drivers.

Basically, the lawyer doesn’t believe much in the distinction between right and wrong and instead focuses on the manipulation and negotiation parts of his job. Justice, though, does come into the equation every now and then.

Haller secures a high-end client when a rich playboy attacks a woman he picked up from a bar and is arrested for the act. He hires Haller, and the lawyer is convinced that this case is going to be a walk in the park.

She now spends her days coming across interesting cases during the day, which she is then forced to hand over to the detectives who work during the day shift. However, she then stumbles upon two cases that she absolutely must solve.

While one case is about a prostitute who is brutally beaten up and found dead in a parking lot, the other is that of a young girl who dies during a shooting at a nightclub. Although she knows she will get into trouble, she continues to work on the case despite strict orders to do otherwise.

While her own partner wishes for her to give up on the cases, she moves forward and continues the investigation during the daytime while also attempting to keep up with her job during the night shifts.

He tries to get his life back on track. On the other hand, he can’t seem to get a mysterious message out of his head. This leads him down a rabbit hole of technology, sexual passion, escorts, and more.

Michael Connelly Harry Bosch books

After finishing high school, he enrolled at the University of Florida where he truly discovered his love of books after reading Raymond Chandler novels. This is when he decided that writing mystery books was what he wanted to pursue, so he went with a major in journalism, along with a minor in creative writing.

He graduated from college in 1980, following which he started working at various newspapers in Daytona Beach and Fort Lauderdale, Florida as a journalist, working mostly the crime beat.

During the cocaine wars, Michael wrote pieces around investigations of crimes committed, and following a major airplane crash of Delta Flight 131 in 1985, he and other two journalists investigated survivors, and once their work was done, 1986 they wrote a story for the Orlando Sun-Sentinel surrounding the crash and its survivors, which short-listed for the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing.

This very piece skyrocketed Michael Connelly’s journalism career, allowing him to get a job with the Los Angeles Times as a crime reporter at around the age of 30 in 1987. Incidentally, Los Angeles is the home of Raymond Chandler, the very classic author who started Michael Connelly on his path to becoming a prolific author.

Not only that but when Michael Connelly moved to LA, he moved to the very apartment where Philip Marlowe (as played by Elliot Gould) rented in the Altman movie. This very apartment was where Michael Connelly wrote The Lincoln Lawyer , the first in the Mickey Haller series.

Michael Connelly remained at the crime beat for a good while since he knew that learning about the very world he was writing about was important not only in his research but also in getting the people, setting, and places with the right tone and inflection.

Some three years after getting the job at the LA Times, he started working on his debut novel, which would become The Black Echo , the first book to feature our beloved Harry Bosch. The book was published in January 1992, and with this, Michael’s career as a book author began after the novel won an Edgar Award for Best First Novel, and readers and critics got a glimpse at this new work.

There were a total of four Harry Bosch books before Michael Connelly wrote The Poet, the first in the new Jack McEvoy series, who – just like Michael – was a newspaper reporter.

After that, The Trunk Music followed as another Harry Bosch book, and then, a new Michael Connelly book called Blood Work emerged as the first in a new series titled Terry McCaleb. This latest book became a popular movie featuring Clint Eastwood in 2002.

An interesting tidbit Michael Connelly revealed in an interview was that he found the location where Harry Bosch would live while Michael was investigating a murder during his time as a reporter.

Michael Connelly became a full-time writer around 2006 when he stopped working as a reporter to focus on crafting his novels. A big life goal for him was to get away from his day job, and he finally did it. Still, he feels just like a journalist when he tells the stories of people featuring in his books.

The screen rights for a Harry Bosch movie or TV show were stuck with Paramount between 1995 and 2010, during which time the author was fighting tooth and nail to release the screen rights back to him since a real development for Harry Bosch was not in sight.

Once he got back the rights to his character through the legal battle, he gave it to Amazon Studios and Fabrik Entertainment, who created the now popular TV series titled simply Bosch with Titus Welliver as the main character.

Michael Connelly must have been the very first author whose books were also filmed at real police stations, this case at three LA ones.

Although most of the Michael Connelly books focus on male main characters, his latest series is about a female protagonist, Renee Ballard who is inspired by stories from Mitzi Roberts, a female homicide detective with the LAPD who has also consulted on the Bosch TV show. Both Mitzi and Renee have worked the night shift in Hollywood.

Renee Ballard and Harry Bosch do share some common traits, both being somewhat outsiders in their own departments, both sort of loners. Both are hard-working cops who are fully committed to justice and won’t look away just to make things easier for themselves.

Also, since Harry Bosch is already retired from the LAPD, Renee keeps this particular police station alive in the Michael Connelly novels. In the meantime, Harry Bosch is now freelancing to keep himself somewhat involved in police work.

As is usual in the Michael Connelly books, the main characters tend to cross paths between series, all gravitating within what us, readers, like to call the Harry Bosch Universe.

The latest entry in the pool of characters, Renee Ballard, has invariably been drawn into the world of Harry Bosch in  Dark Sacred Night , which is the second Renee Ballard book and the 21st Harry Bosch book, published in 2018

Over the years, Michael Connelly has received numerous awards for his internationally acclaimed books. He was awarded or received several times the Dilys Awards, the Anthony Awards, the Macavity Awards, the Dagger Awards, the Anthony Awards, the Edgar Awards, the Shamus Awards, and the Barry Awards – all which are pretty much the biggest awards authors can receive for this best books.

Harry Hieronymous Bosch got his name from a famous 15th Century Dutch painter. In many ways, is the opposite of his creator, Michael Connelly. While Michael comes from a large family, Harry Bosch is an orphan, with his mom (a prostitute in Hollywood) having been murdered while he was still young at the age of 11. He then was sent to various orphanages, from where he ran away at the age of 14 when he lived on the beach for a while during which time he learned to surf (the author has also surfed in his youth, so this was a nice touch to add to Harry Bosch’s traits).

He attended both high school and college, but he didn’t finish either. He did get a GED later though.

Harry is the half-brother of Mickey Haller (both come from the same father), who got his own book series as well.

Harry is a loner and prefers to usually work alone as a one-army-man. He has issues with authority and anger issues, most probably due to his traumatic history couples with his also traumatic experiences in Viet Nam (he was injured a few times and got the Purple Heart as a result). Not surprisingly, he has symptoms of mostly untreated PTSD. As a consequence he is not horrified by violence or crime, which he considers a sad but normal part of life.

This is not to say that he doesn’t show compassion for the victims he comes across. That’s why he’s doing his best to solve all the murder cases that come across his desk – and even some that were either taken away from him or simply are not his cases at all.

As an impatient person, he does bend the rule at times to get his results faster.

He has many skills, some shadier than others, which he uses to help in solving his cases. For example, he can pick locks, which he does all too often.

He was married once, but he always ends up single – maybe due to the job, his relationships are always quite short. He is a smoker, and he has a daughter, Madeline, who wants to be a cop as well (so hopefully in a few years we’ll see a new series featuring Bosch’s daughter as a new LAPD detective).

While it seems like an impossibility, there are still every year newcomers to the world of this author. So reading the Michael Connelly books in order should invariably start with Harry Bosch.

Of course, you could always start with the first Renee Ballard book, or with the first Mickey Haller book, or even with the first Jack McEvoy or Terry McCaleb book. However, soon you will run into the issue of meeting Harry Bosch and not knowing a darn thing about him, and that would be a pity.

Harry Bosch is much more than a person. He is an entire world worth discovering, so reading the Harry Bosch books as part of the Universe – while not strictly a must – are still recommended to understand this deep world the author has created for his readers.

Of course, now that we have also the Renee Ballard books, with the rookie cop who works tightly with Harry Bosch, these books should be read in order as well. However, they can be read as the very last books in the series, as chronologically come as last as well.

And once you start reading the books, you will be engrossed in the Los Angeles world’s stories for a long time to come since Michael Connelly has written so far well over 30 books.

The Michael Connelly Harry Bosch books have earned so much praise that an entire novella could be written by including them all. So here are a few more interesting ones.

It was only last year that Connelly introduced Ballard, a fierce and fascinating new protagonist who instantly emerged as a reader favorite. Bosch, meanwhile, is a grizzled veteran by now;  Dark Sacred Night  marks the 21st novel to center on him. But fans always finish eager to come back for more.” (David Canfield) His immaculate plotting and gift for bringing procedural intricacies to life now seem as strong as ever…he writes the best detective novels around. (Charles Finch) Connelly’s immaculate plotting and gift for bringing procedural intricacies to life now seem as strong as ever…he writes the best detective novels around. (USA Today) Bosch is one of the best detectives in crime fiction, and Connelly continues to amaze with his latest effort. (Jeff Ayers) Connelly has stepped up to the plate in the overflowing ballpark of legal thrillers and blasted a grand slam his first time at bat. (Chicago Tribune)

Lost Hills

Lost Hills is Lee Goldberg at his best. Inspired by the real-world grit and glitz of LA County crime, this book takes no prisoners. And neither does Eve Ronin. Take a ride with her and you’ll find yourself with a heroine for the ages. And you’ll be left hoping for more. – Michael Connelly

Michael Connelly is right up there alongside Patrick O’Brian’s Aubrey/Maturin series in the day of wooden ships and iron men of the Royal Navy. There are many comparisons but the best of all is the writers’ ability to create a story you can’t stop reading. And rereading.

Just finishing the re-read of the entire Bosch series, including the off-shoots. Probably the most enjoyable literary endeavor in all of my 77 years. Thanks Mr Connelly… however, it sadly seems that Bosch at 70 has met his career end with medical issues Too bad, Harry Bosch should go on forever! It is satisfying that your books will always be around!

I found a MC novel left behind in a magazine rack in a Starbucks Coffee shop in Belfast (Botanic Ave.) it was the City of Bones I started reading and discovered the world or Bosch for this I am truly thankful as it restored my faith in human nature. I have bought a number or his other novels since but to my dismay I am not reading them in the order of being published, but I don’t care, as they intrigue me into the middle of the night. Michael Connelly Synopses: Void Moon is a standalone novel by Michael Connelly. In Los Angeles, Cassie Black is another beautiful woman in a Porsche: except Cassie just did six years behind bars and still has “outlaw juice” flowing through her. Now Cassie is going back to her old job, taking down a money man in Vegas. But the perfect heist ends up not being so perfect, and suddenly Cassie is on the run – with a near-psychotic Vegas “fixer” killing everyone who knew about the job. Between Cassie and the man hunting her are a few last secrets: such as who actually set up the job, why Cassie had to take the change, and how, in the end, it might all be a matter of the moon…

Chasing the Dime by Michael Connelly is a standalone title. Henry Price has a whole new life, which includes new digs, a new telephone, and new telephone number. But when he first checks his messages, he realizes someone had the number before him. The messages on his line are for a woman named Lilly, and she is in danger. Price is inexorably drawn into Lilly’s world, and it’s unlike any world he’s ever known. It is a world of escort services, websites, sex, and secret identities. Price tumbles through a hole, giving up the order in his life for a frantic race to save the life of a woman he has never met. Price’s computer skills allow him to learn about Lilly’s last days with some accuracy. But every step into Lilly’s past takes Price deeper into a web of inescapable intricacy – and a decision that could cost him everything he owns and holds dear.

Blood Work is the first Terry McCaleb novel by Michael Connelly. When Graciella Rivers steps onto his boat, ex-FBI agent Terry McCaleb has no idea he’s about to come out of retirement. He’s only recently had a heart transplant and is avoiding stress at all costs. But when Graciella tells him the way her sister, Gloria, was murdered, Terry realizes he has no choice. Now the man with the new heart vows to take down a predator without a soul. For Gloria’s killer shatters every rule that McCaleb ever learned in his years with the FBI – as McCaleb gets no more second chances at life… and only one shot at the truth.

Is it best to read the Bosch Universe Books in order listed or read the McEvoy together and the McCaleb together and the Haller together and the Ballard together?

I read in the “Bosch Universe” order and MUCH preferred it that way. As the characters all make cameos etc and refer to things that happened in the previous books so yeah I’d 100% recommend it that way.

Michael Connelly is one of the best. Never read a bad book by him. He’s on my personal top ten authors list.

Just finished Chasing the Dime. Hard to put down. All of Michael Connelly books are well worth the read.

All 60+ Michael Connelly Books in Order [Ultimate Guide]

Are you a fan of legal mystery and wondering how to read Michael Connelly books in order? Here is a list to help you read the entire series.

Michael Connelly is popularly known for his Harry Bosch Universe thrillers that are popular with many readers. But did you know Connelly has other books besides the Harry Bosch series, such as the Mickey Haller , Jack McEvoy , Renée Billard and Terry McCaleb series?

Each series is standalone from the rest, but many of the characters from one series feature in other parts of different books.

If you want to read Michael Connelly books in order, you have come to the right place.

Who is Michael Connelly?

Michael Connelly is a #1 New York Times bestselling author, but he hadn’t always planned on a writing career. Initially, Connelly was planning to work in construction, but while attending university he switched paths. That’s because he watched Robert Altman’s 1973 adaptation of Raymond Chandler’s book The Long Goodbye and he was inspired to write crime fiction.

He then started studying journalism at university and became a journalist after graduation. Connelly worked at newspapers in Florida on the crime beat before moving to Los Angeles as a crime reporter. He started writing while he was still working as a journalist and it wasn’t until the success of his third novel that he quit his day job.

Connelly has since written 36 novels and one non-fiction book. Collectively, his works have sold more than 80 million copies and been translated into 45 languages.

How to Read Michael Connelly Books in Order

While it seems impossible to read all these books in any order, it is possible. Start by reading Henry Bosch books, and you will love the flow. Some people swear by starting anywhere, maybe begin with Renée Ballard’s book or the Mickey Haller.

However, you will soon run into the character Harry Bosch who you know nothing about. It will be hard to enjoy the book as you would if you had started right from the beginning with Harry Bosch.

Harry Bosch is not just a character in Michael Connelly books; he is an entire world worth discovering. So reading Michael Connelly books in order is highly recommended.

Let’s dive right in!

Book to Screen Adaptations

The first Michael Connelly adaptation was the 2002 movie Blood Work . It starred Clint Eastwood as the main character Terry McCaleb alongside Jeff Daniels and Anjelica Huston. Eastwood was also the director for the production.

This was the last time Eastwood starred in an action film, and unfortunately it was not well-received . Following its poor critical and financial reception, Eastwood shifted more towards director roles and the next Connelly adaptation had to shift gears.

The next adaptation was another movie, but this time adapting the first book in the Lincoln Lawyer series: The Lincoln Lawyer . It stars Matthew McConaughey as the main character Mick Haller alongside Marisa Tomei and Ryan Phillipe.

This did not spin into a film franchise, however, there has been a reboot of The Lincoln Lawyer with a 2022 television show. It stars Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as Mickey Haller and Neve Campbell as Maggie McPherson. The Lincoln Lawyer was renewed for a second season just one month after the first season premiered, but no release date has been made official.

It appears that streaming services are the sweet spot for Connelly adaptations as there are also potentially four projects from his Bosch universe coming from Amazon Studios. The first was Bosch , which ran for seven seasons starring Titus Welliver as Bosch. It also inspired the spin-off Bosch: Legacy which is about to launch its second season starring Welliver and Jamie Hector as Jerry Edgar.

Then there are two more spin-offs in the works; one starring Connelly’s Jerry Edgar in the leading role and the other starring Renée Ballard.

Summary of the Renée Ballard Books in Order

The Late Show Michael Connelly Books in Order

1. The Late Show

Renée Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing none as each morning she turns her cases over to day shift detectives. A once up-and-coming detective, she’s been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor.

But one night she catches two cases she doesn’t want to part with: The brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting. Ballard is determined not to give up at dawn.

Against orders and her own partner’s wishes, she works both cases by day while maintaining her shift by night. As the cases entwine they pull her closer to her own demons and the reason she won’t give up her job no matter what the department throws at her.

Dark Sacred Night Renee Ballard

2. Dark Sacred Night

Renée Ballard is working the night beat again, and returns to Hollywood Station in the early hours only to find a stranger rifling through old file cabinets. The intruder is retired detective Harry Bosch, working a cold case that has gotten under his skin. Ballard kicks him out, but then checks into the case herself and it brings a deep tug of empathy and anger.

Bosch is investigating the death of fifteen-year-old Daisy Clayton, a runaway on the streets of Hollywood who was brutally murdered and her body left in a dumpster like so much trash. Now, Ballard joins forces with Bosch to find out what happened to Daisy and finally bring her killer to justice.

3. The Night Fire

Back when Harry Bosch was just a rookie homicide detective, he had an inspiring mentor who taught him to take the work personally and light the fire of relentlessness for every case. Now that mentor, John Jack Thompson, is dead, but after his funeral his widow hands Bosch a murder book that Thompson took with him when he left the LAPD 20 years before: The unsolved killing of a troubled young man in an alley used for drug deals.

Bosch brings the murder book to Renée Ballard and asks her to help him find what about the case lit Thompson’s fire all those years ago. That will be their starting point.

The bond between Bosch and Ballard tightens as they become a formidable investigation team. And they soon arrive at a worrying question: Did Thompson steal the murder book to work the case in retirement, or to make sure it never got solved?

The Dark Hours Renee Ballard Books in Order

4. The Dark Hours

There’s chaos in Hollywood on New Year’s Eve. Working her graveyard shift, LAPD Detective Renée Ballard seeks shelter at the end of the countdown to wait out the traditional rain of lead as hundreds of revelers shoot their guns into the air. As reports start to roll in of shattered windshields and other damage, Ballard is called to a scene where a hardworking auto shop owner has been fatally hit by a bullet in the middle of a crowded street party.

It doesn’t take long for Ballard to determine that the deadly bullet could not have fallen from the sky. Ballard’s investigation leads her to look into another unsolved murder — a case at one time worked by Detective Harry Bosch.

Ballard and Bosch team up once again to find out where the old and new cases intersect. All the while they must look over their shoulders. The killer who has stayed undetected for so long knows they are coming after him.

Desert Star Michael Connelly

5. Desert Star

LAPD detective Renée Ballard and Harry Bosch work together to hunt the killer who is Bosch’s “white whale”—a man responsible for the murder of an entire family.

A year has passed since LAPD detective Renée Ballard quit the force in the face of misogyny, demoralization, and endless red tape. Yet, after the chief of police himself tells her she can write her ticket within the department, Ballard takes back her badge, leaving “the Late Show” to rebuild the cold case unit at the elite Robbery-Homicide Division.

For years, Harry Bosch has been working a case that haunts him but that he hasn’t been able to crack—the murder of an entire family by a psychopath who still walks free. Ballard makes Bosch an offer: come work with her as a volunteer investigator in the new Open-Unsolved Unit, and he can pursue his “white whale” with the resources of the LAPD behind him.

The two must put aside old resentments to work together again and close in on a dangerous killer.

Summary of the Jack McEvoy Books in Order

The Poet Michael Connelly Books in Order

1. The Poet

Denver crime-beat reporter Jack McEvoy specializes in violent death. So when his homicide detective brother kills himself, McEvoy copes in the only way he knows how. He decides to write the story.

But his research leads him to suspect a serial killer is at work — a devious murderer who’s killing cops and leaving a trail of poetic clues. It’s the news story of a lifetime, if he can get the story without losing his life.

The Scarecrow Jack McEvoy

2. The Scarecrow

Jack McEvoy is at the end of the line as a crime reporter. Forced to take a buy-out from the Los Angeles Times as the newspaper grapples with dwindling revenues, he’s got only a few days left on the job. His last assignment? Training his replacement, a low-cost reporter just out of journalism school.

But Jack has other plans for his exit. He is going to go out with a bang — a final story that will win the newspaper journalism’s highest honor — a Pulitzer prize.

Jack focuses on Alonzo Winslow, a 16-year-old drug dealer from the projects who has confessed to police that he brutally raped and strangled one of his crack clients. Jack convinces Alonzo’s mother to cooperate with his investigation into the possibility of her son’s innocence.

But she has fallen for the oldest reporter’s trick in the book. Jack’s real intention is to use his access to report and write a story that explains how societal dysfunction and neglect created a 16-year-old killer. But as Jack delves into the story he soon realizes that Alonzo’s so-called confession is bogus, and Jack is soon off and running on the biggest story he’s had since The Poet crossed his path years before.

He reunites with FBI Agent Rachel Walling to go after a killer who has worked completely below police and FBI radar — and with perfect knowledge of any move against him. What Jack doesn’t know is that his investigation has inadvertently set off a digital tripwire. The killer knows Jack is coming — and he’s ready.

Fair Warning Michael Connelly

3. Fair Warning

Veteran reporter Jack McEvoy has taken down killers before, but when a woman he had a one-night stand with is murdered in a particularly brutal way, McEvoy realizes he might be facing a criminal mind unlike any he’s ever encountered.

McEvoy investigates — against the warnings of the police and his own editor — and makes a shocking discovery that connects the crime to other mysterious deaths across the country. But his inquiry hits a snag when he himself becomes a suspect.

As he races to clear his name, McEvoy’s findings point to a serial killer working under the radar of law enforcement for years, and using personal data shared by the victims themselves to select and hunt his targets.

A Harry Bosch Book Summary

The Narrows Terry McCaleb Books in Order

1. The Narrows

FBI agent Rachel Walling finally gets the call she’s dreaded for years, the one that tells her the Poet has surfaced. She has never forgotten the serial killer who wove lines of poetry in his hideous crimes — and apparently he has not forgotten her.

Former LAPD detective Harry Bosch gets a call, too — from the widow of an old friend. Her husband’s death seems natural, but his ties to the hunt for the Poet make Bosch dig deep.

Arriving at a derelict spot in the California desert where the feds are unearthing bodies, Bosch joins forces with Rachel. Now the two are at odds with the FBI and squarely in the path of the Poet, who will lead them on a wicked ride out of the heat, through the narrows of evil, and into a darkness all his own.

Summary of the Terry McCaleb Books in Order

Blood Work Terry McCaleb

1. Blood Work

When Graciella Rivers steps onto his boat, ex-FBI agent Terrell McCaleb has no idea he’s about to come out of retirement. He’s recuperating from a heart transplant and avoiding anything stressful. But when Graciella tells him the way her sister Gloria was murdered, it leaves Terry no choice.

Now the man with the new heart vows to take down a predator without a soul. For Gloria’s killer shatters every rule that McCaleb ever learned in his years with the Bureau. McCaleb gets no more second chances at life…and just one shot at the truth.

A Darkness More Than Night Michael Connelly Books in Order

2. A Darkness More Than Night

Terry McCaleb, retired FBI agent, is asked by the LAPD to help them investigate a series of murders that have them baffled. They are the kind of ritualized killings McCaleb specialized in solving with the FBI, and he is reluctantly drawn from his peaceful new life back into the horror and excitement of tracking down a terrifying homicidal maniac.

More horrifying still, the suspect who seems to fit the profile that McCaleb develops is someone he has known and worked with in the past: LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch.

At the beginning of  The Last Coyote , things aren’t going so well for Harry Bosch. He’s single, has lost his home, and is drowning in the bottle. To top it off, he has also been suspended from the force indefinitely. He doesn’t want to get the psychiatric evaluation the LAPD requires. But when he gives in, he realizes that it was the right thing to do. There’s something at the heart of his problems that he has to deal with: the murder of his mother. He reopens the cold case from thirty years ago and begins investigating what happened—and how her case was mishandled.

Trunk Music

Trunk Music

The first case Bosch handles after his suspension appears to be a mafia hit. The victim was a Hollywood producer found in the trunk of a car. As Bosch looks into the case, he finds himself in Las Vegas with the crime looking more and more like it was indeed done by the mafia. The deeper he digs, the more he thinks things aren’t quite what they seem. Just when he thinks he has a handle on the case, something else comes up. Soon, his investigation takes a turn that puts him at odds with his superiors and in danger.

Angels Flight

Angels Flight

When the body of Howard Elias is found, every police officer hopes they don’t get put on the case. Why? Because Elias was a high-profile black lawyer specializing in cases of racism and police brutality. He was murdered right before he was to go to trial, suing the LAPD on behalf of Michael Harris. Harris was charged and acquitted of crimes against a child, but many in the LAPD think he’s guilty. With these circumstances surrounding Elias’s death, pretty much everyone in the LAPD is a suspect. And, of course, Harry Bosch is given the lead in this minefield of a murder case.

Lost Light

Harry Bosch is fed up. The LAPD isn’t quite the bastion of justice he thought it was. He retires but doesn’t seem to be able to hack civilian life. When he left the force, he didn’t leave empty-handed—he brought a case file with him. Four years ago, a production assistant was murdered on set during a robbery. After the onset of the war on terror, the LAPD is more concerned with where the money went—was it used to fund terrorist operations? Bosch can’t give it up though. He wants to get justice for the forgotten murder victim whether he’s a detective or not. Bosch’s unofficial investigation puts him at odds with law enforcement, but he’s determined to solve the case.

The dead man, you see, had ties to The Poet investigation. Bosch and Walling work together to catch a devious serial killer. Even if it puts them in danger and in conflict with the FBI.

Back when Harry Bosch was just a rookie homicide detective, he had an inspiring mentor who taught him to take the work personally and light the fire of relentlessness for every case. Now that mentor, John Jack Thompson, is dead, and his widow gives Bosch a murder book, one that Thompson took with him when he left the LAPD twenty years before—the unsolved killing of a troubled young man. Bosch takes the murder book to Detective Renée Ballard and asks her to help him discover what about this crime lit Thompson’s fire all those years ago. As she begins her inquiries—while still working her own cases on the midnight shift—Ballad finds aspects of the initial investigation that just don’t add up. The bond between Bosch and Ballard tightens as they become a formidable investigation team. And they soon arrive at a disturbing question: Did Thompson steal the murder book to work the case in retirement, or to make sure it never got solved?

The Lincoln Lawyer Season 3 begins production (which Mickey Haller book is it based on?)

The Lincoln Lawyer is starting production on Season 3, but which of the novels by Michael Connelly will the new year be based on? Find out here!

Previously adapted into a big-screen movie starring Matthew McConaughey, The Lincoln Lawyer is based on the novels by Michael Connelly (author of the Harry Bosch novels). Mickey Haller (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) is a lawyer who earned his nickname by doing a lot of business out of his Lincoln town car.

The first season was based on The Brass Verdict, which was actually the second Haller novel. Season 2 took inspiration from the fourth novel, The Fifth Witness.

The Season 2 finale had Mickey managing to get lover Lisa Trammell acquitted of killing magnate Mitchell Bondurant after convincing the jury that businessman Alex Grant was behind it.

But in a twist, Mickey realized that while Lisa may not have killed Bondurant, she did murder her husband years before and buried the body in her backyard. He dropped the dime to the cops to arrest her.

Mickey saw his ex-wife Lorna get married to investigator Cisco. He was worried when he was nearly hit by a car and wondered if Grant was coming after him.

Mickey then got a call from a man in jail accused of murder and begged Mickey to help. Confused as to how the guy knew him, Mickey learned the murder victim was sex worker Gloria, who'd been involved in an earlier case.

That was a cliffhanger to lead into Season 3, so which book is it based on?

Which book is The Lincoln Lawyer Season 3 based on?

Speaking on his Twitter feed, Michael Connelly confirmed that Season 3 will be based on the 2013 novel The Gods of Guilt (which he calls a favorite of his).

The book directly addresses the show's cliffhanger as Mickey has to defend Andre La Crosse of murdering Gloria. But, as often happens, Mickey discovers his client has his share of secrets, and there's more to the murder than there seems.

It's unsure if Grant will play a role in this novel as the focus will be on the main case. It's also not sure yet when the new season gets filming as it was among the projects delayed by the strikes hitting Hollywood.

But fans now know which of the books The Lincoln Lawyer will tackle next, and Season 3 will continue the daring drama the show is known for.

The Lincoln Lawyer is available to stream on Netflix.

Lincoln Lawyer Mickey Haller enlists the help of his half-brother, Harry Bosch, to prove the innocence of a woman convicted of killing her ex-husband.

Defense attorney Mickey Haller is back, taking the long shot cases, where the chances of winning are one in a million. After getting a wrongfully convicted man out of prison, he is inundated with pleas from incarcerated people claiming innocence. He enlists his half-brother, retired LAPD Detective Harry Bosch, to weed through the letters, knowing most claims will be false.   Bosch pulls a needle from the haystack: a woman in prison for killing her ex-husband, a sheriff’s deputy, but who still maintains her innocence. Bosch reviews the case and sees elements that don’t add up, and a sheriff’s department intent on bringing quick justice in the killing of one of its own.   Now Haller has an uphill battle in court, a David fighting Goliaths to vindicate his client. The path for both lawyer and investigator is fraught with danger from those who don’t want the case reopened and will stop at nothing to keep the Haller-Bosch dream team from finding the truth.

Resurrection Walk is available in print, eBook, and audiobook in the USA, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. The Italian, Spanish, and Dutch translations are available now, as well. The audiobook is read by Peter Giles (Mickey Haller) and Titus Welliver (Harry Bosch).

Princess Michael’s Russian tycoon friend shot dead in Moscow

Princess Michael: "... a very good friendship..."

A wealthy Russian businessman who became friends with Princess Michael of Kent has been murdered in an apparent contract killing.

Mikhail Kravchenko, who owned a large chain of furniture stores, was shot at least six times in the chest and head when his car was ambushed yards from his home in the village of Peredelkino, just outside Moscow. Police are investigating whether he could have been the victim of a business dispute with rivals.

Mr Kravchenko, 46, was returning to his house in the early hours of Sunday morning when his Mercedes was overtaken by another vehicle, which then blocked the road in front of him. Police said that two men with handguns opened fire on his car.
