Just a Thought

Aaron M. Rosenberg’s puzzle is royally fun.

WEDNESDAY PUZZLE — Congratulations to Aaron M. Rosenberg, who is making his third appearance in the New York Times Crossword.

Solvers with an interest in crossword construction should take a look at Mr. Rosenberg’s constructor notes, which provide valuable insight into theme creation. Sometimes, just a thought is all it takes to set off the creative process! Constructors with coding chops, like Mr. Rosenberg, can turn that spark of inspiration into a fully formed theme in no time.

We’ll get into Mr. Rosenberg’s hilarious theme in a moment, but first, let’s look at some of the clues that stood out in today’s puzzle.

Tricky Clues

1A. I was immediately hooked by the clue “Like some plants that don’t need watering.” I am developing my green thumb, and I would love to have a plant or two that doesn’t need watering. Of course, that was before I realized that the answer was FAKE. (Raise your hand if you ever watered a fake plant for months before you realized it was fake. Just me? Ah, well.)

20A. The “Apt recourse for a deal gone sour?” is a LEMON LAW , which may cover you if you purchase a faulty car.

34A. “___ Day (Down Under holiday)” is the clue for ANZAC, an acronym for the “Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.” I had never heard of ANZAC Day, which commemorates the day that Australian and New Zealand forces landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula in what is now Turkey on April 25, 1915, during World War I. The day later broadened to honor the lives of all Australians and New Zealanders who died in service.

63A. NEON is an “Element of the Vegas strip?” The Vegas strip is famously bedecked in NEON lights.

6D. One “Experimental-but-accessible music genre” is AVANT-POP. I appreciate that each element of the answer is inferable from the clue: “Experimental” gives us the AVANT bit, while “accessible” points to POP.

11D. I enjoyed this interview with Ted CHIANG (“Award-winning science fiction writer Ted”), so I thought I’d share that with you here.

37D. We see a lot of French in crossword puzzles, but this is the first time we’ve ever seen PAPILLON clued with “French for ‘butterfly’” instead of the dog breed in the New York Times Crossword.

55D. “It’s just a thought” is the clue for IDEA. In this case, the “it” in the clue refers to the entry — an IDEA is just a thought.

Today’s Theme

This puzzle features four common phrases ending in KING that have been reparsed to be about four very silly monarchs. Each of the KINGs has a very particular quirk, which is described in detail in extra-long, extra-absurd clues.

First is the PERSONAL BAN KING (“ Hark! And hear of the vengeful ruler who took great pleasure in expelling disloyal subjects, for he was the … ”). Of course, “personal banking” is a coherent concept that is in-the-language, but PERSONAL BAN KING is so much funnier. I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to use an A.T.M. or deposit a check through my phone without thinking about this petty ruler.

The next ridiculous monarch is the CHERRY PIC KING (“ Listen now! And I shall relate the story of the curious sovereign who adorned his castle with images of red fruit, for he was the … ”). His castle, adorned with CHERRY PICs, sounds lovely.

Our third peculiar potentate is the DOUBLE PAR KING (“ Lend me your ear! And I will speak of the clumsy monarch who took twice as many golf strokes as his opponents, for he was the … ”). As a poor golfer myself, I most relate to the DOUBLE PAR KING.

Finally, and perhaps most absurdly, we have the BACKWARD LOO KING (“ Give heed! And listen to my tale of the mad tyrant who decreed that all toilets in his realm be installed the wrong way, for he was the … ”). I laughed out loud at this one, and then had a fun time trying to imagine how one would use a BACKWARD LOO.

This is a ridiculous, hilarious theme, and I immensely enjoyed solving it. Let’s hear from Mr. Rosenberg about his (incredibly speedy) experience constructing it.

Constructor Notes

The inspiration for this puzzle came from Carl Larson’s “ Queen ” puzzle from 2021. I solved it just after 10 p.m. the night it came out and recall thinKING that I might be able to develop a theme around a different sort of monarch. I wrote a Python script to find words ending in KING that become nouns if you remove KING and sifted through the stems to search for viable entries. By 11 p.m., I had nailed down the theme set you see in today’s crossword. Why did this one come together so quickly? Frankly, there weren’t that many other options to choose from. If you have suggestions on how you would have clued MOUNTAIN BI KING, feel free to DM me on Twitter .
