Nets promote Kevin Ollie to interim head coach after firing Jacque Vaughn, per report
Kevin ollie reportedly is in the running to take over in brooklyn.
The Brooklyn Nets have fired head coach Jacque Vaughn, the team announced Monday morning. Kevin Ollie is set to be named the interim head coach in Brooklyn, per ESPN . The Nets, now 21-33, have fallen out of the top 10 in the Eastern Conference and made a change over the NBA All-Star break with 28 games left on their regular-season schedule. Ollie's first game will come Thursday night against the Raptors.
Ollie, previously the head coach at the University of Connecticut and the head of coaching and player development at Overtime Elite, joined Vaughn's staff ahead of the 2023-24 season. Ollie spent 13 seasons in the NBA as a player, and he helped guide UConn to a national championship in 2014. He was a candidate for the Detroit Pistons head coaching job last summer before the team hired Monty Williams.
Vaughn took over the Nets under less than ideal circumstances. After serving as interim coach in 2020 after the firing of Kenny Atkinson, he remained on the staff under new coach Steve Nash. When Nash got fired early last season, Vaughn was again tapped as the interim replacement.
That interim tag was removed following a hot start, but things fell apart in the middle of the season when extension talks with Kyrie Irving broke down and he sought a trade. The Nets sent him to Dallas and followed that move up by dealing Kevin Durant to the Phoenix Suns . With a suddenly rebuilding roster, the Nets declined. They fell to the No. 6 seed in last year's postseason, and now, at 21-33, they sit in 11th place in the Eastern Conference this year. They have gone 8-23 since their impressive 13-10 start.
The Nets are now somewhat stuck between eras. They lack the star power of the Durant-Irving years, but with the Houston Rockets owning so many of their first-round picks from the James Harden trade, they aren't in an ideal position to rebuild either. They've accumulated plenty of picks from other teams in recent trades, and those picks could potentially help them land a new star to pair with Mikal Bridges . Of course, maintaining a winning culture in between those two eras would go a long way in recruiting such a player. Vaughn hasn't done so, and now the Nets are moving on.
Vaughn is the third Eastern Conference coach to get fired this season. The Washington Wizards made a coaching change from Wes Unseld Jr. to Brian Keefe while the Milwaukee Bucks replaced Adrian Griffin with Doc Rivers. That means that 20% of the Eastern Conference has already made coaching changes this season, and when the offseason arrives, more could easily come.

As credit report errors climb, advocates urge consumers to conduct "credit checkups"
By Megan Cerullo
Edited By Anne Marie Lee
February 15, 2024 / 6:00 AM EST / CBS News
As complaints of errors on credit reports surge, two consumer advocacy groups have teamed up to encourage Americans to conduct regular "credit checkups" by accessing their free credit reports as often as once a week.
Complaints to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) related to credit report errors have more than doubled since 2021, according to a new Consumer Reports analysis. Last year, consumers submitted nearly 645,000 such complaints, compared to roughly 308,000 in 2021.
Such mistakes can hurt an individual's ability to lead a financially healthy life, given that one's credit report can affect one's access to housing and job opportunities.
Consumer Reports and WorkMoney, a nonprofit that helps raise incomes and lower costs for everyday Americans, are announcing a "Credit Checkup" project to encourage consumers to stay on top of their credit reports, mine them for errors and report any mistakes they identify to the CFPB.
"We are trying to cut down on the number of errors people are experiencing, because a credit report is so key to a person's financial future," Ryan Reynolds, a policy analyst for the Consumer Reports financial fairness team told CBS MoneyWatch. "It determines whether or not you'll get a loan, what the loan's interest rate is and whether or not you'll get a job or apartment."
The uptick in errors could simply be the result of people checking their credit reports more frequently, or the automated systems that credit reporting agencies rely upon to resolve disputes.
The three major agencies — Equifax, Experience and TransUnion — since the COVID-19 pandemic, have allowed consumers to check their reports once weekly without being dinged by visiting AnnualCreditReport.com.
The two groups are encouraging consumers to check their reports for errors and submit feedback on how accurate their reports were, and how easy or hard it was to resolve disputes at cr.org/creditcheckup.
Common credit report errors include inaccurate personal information like one's name or address, or incorrect reporting of debts on a loan you've taken out.
WorkMoney's chief advocacy officer Anjali Sakaria underscored the importance of maintaining an accurate credit report.
"Credit reports and scores have a real and direct impact on everyday life, and we want them to accurately reflect the financial health of everyday Americans," she told CBS MoneyWatch. "Whether you get access to credit, or what interest rate you pay on loans — that's directly related to your credit report. And a higher interest rate translates into extra dollars every month that could otherwise be spent on food or gas or put into savings."
Here's what to do if your report contains errors
- File a dispute with each major credit reporting bureau
- Include documentation like statements or payment records when filing a dispute about a debt you've paid that appears on a report
- Writer a letter to explain the problem
- Make copies of the materials so you have a record, and send them by certified mail
- If your dispute is not resolved, file a complaint with the CFPB
- Consider seeking an attorney's services to sue over credit report errors

Joe Manchin announces he will not run for president
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., announced Friday that he is not running for president after spending months mulling a bid that would have shaken up the 2024 campaign.
"I will not be seeking a third-party run. I will not be involved in a presidential run," Manchin said during a speech. "I will be involved in making sure that we secure a president that has the knowledge and has the passion and has the ability to bring this country together."
Manchin said that a third party could be viable down the road, but that a bid this year would have been “very challenging.” He added that he didn't want to be a "deal-breaker" or a "spoiler."
"I just don’t think it’s the right time," Manchin said. "We’re on a real teetering situation here that could go either way. Democracy is at stake right now."
Manchin, 76, had said last November that he would not seek re-election to his Senate seat this year, leading to speculation that he would run for the White House as an independent or as a third-party candidate.
Democrats feared a Manchin candidacy would have pulled votes away from President Joe Biden and boost former President Donald Trump, the 2024 Republican frontrunner, in a general election.
Manchin told reporters after his speech Friday that he spoke with Biden before he made his announcement, calling their conversation "very, very respectful."
The centrist senator had been publicly refusing to rule out a White House bid as recently as Thursday, when floated Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, and former Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, as potential running mates .
Manchin also appeared at events over the past few months hosted by No Labels, the political group trying to mount a bipartisan, third-party presidential campaign. He told reporters that he wished the group well, but that he didn't think joining their ticket was the "proper course" for him.
In a statement following Manchin's announcement, former Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, former North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory and civil rights leader Benjamin Chavis Jr., the national co-chairs of No Labels, said they were speaking with "several exceptional leaders" about a possible presidential ticket.
Manchin said he planned to eventually endorse a candidate for president. He also didn't rule out leaving the Democratic Party, but said he wants to try to fix it first.
"I would like to think you can save your family," Manchin said. "Or you can save your party that you were raised in."
As a Democrat representing a red state, Manchin has long been vocally critical of both major parties and the political system as a whole, a note he struck once again during his speech to about 80 attendees on Friday.
"I am convinced you can’t fix it from Washington. I’ve tried for 14 years and I saw break last week,” Manchin said, referring the the failed bipartisan border bill.
CORRECTION (Feb. 16, 2024, 7:34 p.m. ET): A previous version of this article misspelled the last name of a national co-chair of No Labels. He is Joe Lieberman, not Liberman.
