Change default slide layout in Powerpoint

How can I change the default layout for a new slide in Powerpoint?

When I go to View -> Slide Master , I can edit and add new layouts (sometimes I can also delete a layout, but not always, which is odd), but I don't see an option to make a particular layout the default one.

The version I am using is Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010

I've found a solution that works for me on PowerPoint 2013:

  • Go to Slide Master View . You should see a master layout and several dependent layouts (indented).
  • Find the slide layout that you want to use as default layout for new slides.
  • Move it so that it is the third item overall counting the master layout (i.e. the second indented layout underneath the master layout)
  • Close Slide Master View .
  • Try to add a new slide. It should be in the layout you need.

Please let me know if this works for you.

  • 20 This works but it is super unintuitive. Why the heck would they make it the third item? –  Andrew Mao Dec 9, 2013 at 18:12
  • 7 This works because the first is the current theme (the base for all slides), the second (which is the first in the theme) is the "Title" slide, (you can test this by deleting all slides and adding a new slide and the second in the list is the default for the first slide). This makes the third (The second in the theme) the first non-title slide. –  James Jun 29, 2015 at 14:47

  • 4 Unintuitive and illogical but also works on PowerPoint 2016 on the Mac. –  pvillela Aug 19, 2016 at 10:41
  • 1 @AndrewMao if you have to ask that, then I guess you don't use Microsoft products. You may have heard the phrase, the customer is always right, or make the customer happy. This is true for most companies, but apparently not a good strategy if you have a monopoly ( or apparent monopoly), in this case you should treat them as badly as possible. I can not remember where I read this, but it seems to be what works. –  ctrl-alt-delor May 23, 2017 at 17:19

PowerPoint has Slide Masters and Layouts.

The "default" Layout (i.e., what you get when you add a New Slide [Ctrl+M]) is set by what was taken as the layout last time. Thus to change:

  • Add a New Slide
  • Right click on the slide (in the slide outline [to the left]), select Layout>
  • Click on the Layout you want as default

When you add a new slide (Ctrl+M), it should will be in this format.

user45907's user avatar

Save the layout you want as a PP template. When you open PP you should see the template under the recent tab. Click on the pin icon to pin the template so that it will always be available as a pinned template. Click on it and it will open to your desired layout.

I could have sworn there was an easy way to do this in Powerpoint, but I don't use it anymore and Googling the issue seems to indicate that there isn't a proper in-program way to do it. This Powerpoint add-in ought to be the solution.

Note: I didn't actually test that, I run LibreOffice now. But it does appear to have a good rep on teh interwebz.

1. Document Size Specifications

To set up the Bleed: Microsoft Powerpoint does not have the ability to create a bleed, so you will have to set up a custom page size. Click the Design tab. Click Page Setup In the Width: and Height: boxes, type in your document size in inches, including bleed. The page size including bleed is the size you want, plus .25". For example: an 8.5"x11" page MUST be set up as 8.75"x11.25: Click OK To set up the Safety Zones: There is no way to set a bleed or safety zone margins in Microsoft Publisher - you will be eye-balling the measurement with the on-screen ruler. Click the View tab. Check the Ruler box (or press Shift+Alt+F9) The rulers will now be visible You'll need to stay .25" away from the edges of each page with text and images that you don't want to be cut off. Every space on the ruler is .125, so .25 is two spaces on the ruler. Note: there is no actual line or margin visible, the above is for illustration purposes

Microsoft PowerPoint does not support CMYK, and should not be used to create colorful items or photos for print. Microsoft PowerPoint only supports RGB imagery, which means they will look fine on the screen, but will not print with the same color. Only use Microsoft PowerPoint for printing basic text and simple graphics where color is not a concern.

3. Resolution

Microsoft PowerPoint will output a PDF at a barely sufficient resolution for text, but will dramatically reduce the resolution of photos, do not use Microsoft PowerPoint to create a document if photo quality is a concern in your project. PowerPoint can only output at a maximum of 220dpi, meaning that some graphics can appear pixelated on a commercial press. Only use Microsoft PowerPoint for printing basic text and simple graphics where graphical quality is not a concern.

4. Typography

Microsoft PowerPoint does not have the ability to outline type, therefore you run the risk of your fonts changing to other fonts. When a font changes, or "defaults" the size of words and items including columns, and pagination can change. This means the results when printed might not be the same as on the screen. Only use Microsoft PowerPoint if typography, pagination, word and line spacing are not a concern. Tips for text: Use 8-point and above for best results. Using fonts other than the basic fonts included on every computer is not recommended when using Microsoft PowerPoint, Use included system fonts such as:

5. Saving Your File

Save your Microsoft PowerPoint as a PDF: Do not send PowerPoint files to a commercial printer, they will not print . Click File > Save & Send Click Create PDF/XPS Document Click Create PDF In the following window, make sure "Standard" and not "Minimum size" is chosen. Click Publish. Note: Results will be unpredictable when printing from Microsoft PowerPoint.

PowerPoint 2016: Presenting Your Slide Show

Lesson 12: presenting your slide show.

/en/powerpoint2016/printing/content/

Introduction

Once your slide show is complete, you'll need to learn how to present it to an audience. PowerPoint offers several tools and features to help make your presentation smooth, engaging, and professional.

Optional: Download our practice presentation .

Watch the video below to learn more about presenting your slide show.

Presenting a slide show

Before you present your slide show, you'll need to think about the type of equipment that will be available for your presentation. Many presenters use projectors during presentations, so you might want to consider using one as well. This allows you to control and preview slides on one monitor while presenting them to an audience on another screen.

To start a slide show:

There are several ways you can begin your presentation:

clicking the Start From Beginning command on the Quick Access Toolbar

To advance and reverse slides:

You can advance to the next slide by clicking your mouse or pressing the spacebar on your keyboard. Alternatively, you can use or arrow keys on your keyboard to move forward or backward through the presentation.

You can also hover your mouse over the bottom-left and click the arrows to move forward or backward.

hovering the mouse to access navigation buttons in Slide Show view

To stop a slide show:

You can exit presentation mode by pressing the Esc key on your keyboard. Alternatively, you can click the Slide Show Options button in the bottom-left and select End Show .

ending a slide show

The presentation will also end after the last slide . You can click the mouse or press the spacebar to return to Normal view.

Presentation tools and features

PowerPoint provides convenient tools you can use while presenting your slide show. For example, you can change your mouse pointer to a pen or highlighter to draw attention to items in your slides. In addition, you can jump around to slides in your presentation or access other programs from your taskbar if needed.

To show the taskbar:

Sometimes you may need to access the Internet or other files and programs on your computer during your presentation. PowerPoint allows you to access your taskbar without ending the presentation.

  • Locate and select the Slide Options button in the bottom-left corner.

showing the Taskbar

Slide options

You can also access any of the menu items above by right-clicking anywhere on the screen during your slide show.

opening the Slide options menu

To skip to a nonadjacent slide:

You can jump to slides out of order if needed.

clicking the See All Slides button

  • The selected slide will appear.

To access drawing tools:

Your mouse pointer can act as pen or highlighter to draw attention to items in your slides.

  • Locate and select the Pen Tools button in the bottom-left corner.

selecting the Pen tool

You can also use the laser pointer feature to draw attention to certain parts of your slide. Unlike the pen and highlighter, the laser pointer will not leave markings on your slides. To use the laser pointer, select it from Pen Tools, or press and hold the Ctrl key and the left mouse button.

selecting the Laser Pointer

To erase ink markings:

Presenter view

If you're presenting your slide show with a second display—like a projector—you can use Presenter view . Presenter view gives you access to a special set of controls on your screen that the audience won't see, allowing you to easily reference slide notes , preview the upcoming slide , and much more.

To access Presenter view:

Start your slide show as you normally would, then click the Slide Options button and select Presenter View . Alternatively, you can press Alt+F5 on your keyboard to start the slide show in Presenter view.

Where is Page Setup in Powerpoint 2013?

if you are a longtime user of Powerpoint, then you have probably come to rely on the Page Setup menu that allows you to change the size or orientation of your slide.

This menu is also part of several other Microsoft Office products and contains many helpful settings.

But if you are using Powerpoint 2013 and looking for the Page Setup menu in that program, then you may be having some difficulty.

Microsoft replaced the Page Setup menu in Powerpoint 2013 with a new menu called Custom Slide Size.

This new menu contains all of the options that were previously part of the Page Setup menu in Powerpoint 2013; it just has a new name now.

Our guide below will show you where to find this menu so that you can make the changes to your slideshow.

Locating the Page Setup Options in Powerpoint 2013

The steps in this guide are going to help you find the menu that contains important information regarding the page attributes for your slideshow.

This includes the size of the page, its orientation, the notes, handouts and outline orientations, and the manner in which Powerpoint starts page numbering.

Step 2: Click the Design tab at the top of the window.

open the powerpoint 2013 design tab

Step 3: Click the Slide Size button in the Customize section of the ribbon, then click the Custom Slide Size button.

Important note: Microsoft PowerPoint 2016 is no longer available

The Download button for this program will redirect you to the latest PowerPoint version. Also you can find the Premium version and create your best work with Office 365 .

Presentation software gets an update with Microsoft PowerPoint 2016

Microsoft PowerPoint 2016 adds a range of new feature to the most popular presentation software on the market. A variety of new features make design and presentation recording easier (although some of these are available only to Office 365 subscribers). Like the other Microsoft Office apps, PowerPoint has also had its Help feature significantly upgraded -- finding out how to achieve a particular task is much simpler than in previous versions .

More of the same with a few tweaks

If you've used PowerPoint 2013 , you won't see a lot of changes in Microsoft PowerPoint 2016. The interface is essentially the same, with the only changes being a few small additions such as the Help menu. Some design processes are now streamlined or automated : for instance, if you start entering a list of bullet points, PowerPoint will now offer to turn your list into an eye-catching SmartArt graphic. If you want to make your slides the old-fashioned way, of course, that's still possible.

Still the standard for presentation design

Microsoft PowerPoint 2016 is essentially a slightly improved version of its predecessor, with a few new features and some overall improvements in Office 2016 . If you need to create presentations for work or school, it remains the go-to tool. If you didn't like the old version, however, there isn't a lot here to change your mind. In case you are looking for free alternatives, you may want to download Prezi or Free Slideshow Maker . If you need help, on the Microsoft Support website you will find support and tutorials.

  • Improved help menu
  • New design features
  • Simple, easy-to-use basic tools
