How Do You Write Neatly and Fast?: 4 Key Tips

By Garrett Winn Jan 02, 2023

When trying to write fast, your handwriting ends up looking unreadable and messy. When you try to write neatly, it seems to take forever.

You may be frustrated and wondering - What is the solution? Is it really possible to write fast yet neatly? Let’s find out…

The 4 Best Tips to Achieving a Neat Handwriting When Writing Fast

How do you write neatly and fast?

Use a comfortable pen grip

Make your letters small, tall, and skinny

Maintain correct posture

Use the "arm movement method"

We'll take a closer look at each one of these key tips below!

Why Would You Need to Write Neatly and Fast?

There are some instances when you will have to write very quickly , yet legibly. Students for example often face this dilemma during lessons.

If you are studying, you will need to be able to listen and take notes at the same time. Often, the speaker will not slow down and it’s up to you to keep up.

They may also have to increase handwriting speed when answering tests or exams. With limited time, they need to record their answers as fast as possible. Being able to write quickly could be the difference between a pass and a fail.

Another instance is when you have a flash of inspiration and need to jot it down quickly.

Many creatives have this problem. They think of a brilliant idea and by the time they make a note, it’s forgotten. Quick handwriting skills would definitely come in handy in such situations.

The Role of Your Pen in Maintaining a Neat Handwriting When Writing Fast

“The pen is the tongue of the mind.” -Horace

As Horace said, no matter how technologically advanced a society is, the pen is always present. It can never be replaced.

When wondering how to write neatly and fast , you will need to find the correct equipment .

Your pen will play a big role in the speed and legibility of your handwriting as well as handwriting style.

Key features to look out for in a ‘fast pen’ include:

  • Balance - Where does the weight lie on the pen? Is it towards the tip, the back or the middle? One way to check is to lightly hold the pen in the crook of your thumb and index finger.
  • There should be no excess weight towards one end.
  • Tip friction/pressure - The point at which the pen makes contact with paper should have minimum friction . It should allow for easy, quick ink-flow.
  • Nib/writing point size - The thickness of the nib/writing point will determine speed.
  • Tips between 0.7mm - 0.9mm may be easier to use but they result in larger strokes which take more time to complete.

Use thinner tips for smaller letters (explained below) . Fine point fountain pens and rollerball pens are the best when looking for a thin-tipped pen.

  • Fit - Your pen should have no loose or ill-fitting parts . The cap should close snugly and the clip should be able to snap back when tugged slightly.

The ideal pens for ‘speed-writing’ are fountain and rollerball pens because minimal pressure is needed. The ink flow is constant and the light touch lets you write much faster.

Take a look at this comparison table for various pens and their advantages. Each one has a different impact on your handwriting style.

Choosing the right writing style to help you write neatly fast infographic

1.) Use the Most Comfortable Pen Grip

Everyone holds their pens differently and your grip is entirely personal. As long as it results in neat handwriting, no single grasp can be labeled right or wrong.

Studies show that grasp patterns do not actually play a big role in handwriting speed. Experts, however, agree on these two methods of holding a pen:

1. The pen is between the thumb and index finger and the body of the pen rests on the middle finger. The ring finger and little finger are tucked into the palm. This is the most commonly used handwriting method, known as the dynamic tripod grip .

2. The pen is between the thumb and both the index finger and the middle fingers. The body rests on the ring finger. Known as the dynamic quadrupod grip , it is also widely popular and one of the most effective.

They are accepted as a way to reduce strain on fingers and wrists and are the most popular grasp methods in handwriting techniques.

The lateral versions of these grips are also common in handwriting. The one major difference is the way the thumb crosses over the pen and touches the forefinger.

However you hold your pen, you want to make sure you hold it lightly with minimal tension to ensure you maintain a neat handwriting throughout.

A wider pen allows for a more relaxed grip so stay away from thin-barreled pens. These cause you to squeeze the pen causing unnecessary strain on fingers.

2.) Make Your Letters Small, Tall and Skinny

You can increase your writing speed by decreasing the size of your letters . The smaller each individual letter is, the less time it takes to complete it.

You do not want to decrease the letter size so much as to make your note illegible. Rather, a reduction of 10 - 15% is enough to increase your handwriting speed.

It has also been found that it is easier for us to write up and down than side-to-side. This is because our fingers only bend up and down so sideways motions are more difficult.

Making your letters taller and skinnier is a way to reduce horizontal movements.

Another simple way to improve your handwriting is to use lined paper. The lines give guidance and are a way to keep the letters neat.

3.) Posture

Your posture when writing will determine the amount of stress placed on your various muscles and thus influence the speed.

If you have incorrect posture, your muscles will cramp, and inevitably, cause you to write slower.

These tips outline what posture will help improve your handwriting.

•  Both feet are flat on the floor. •  Knees are at a 90° angle. •  Your back is straight and slightly inclined towards the desk. •  Forearms rest in the desk with elbows at 90°. •  Non-writing hand holds onto paper at a 45° angle. • Y our neck and shoulders are relaxed. •  Whole body faces the desk directly. •  Paper tilted to the right (for right-handed people). The opposite applies to left-handed people.

4.) Use the Arm Movement Method of Writing

According to the American Association for the Advancement of Science , the normal method of handwriting taught in schools often causes cramps as it uses the smaller hand muscles.

Another mode of writing known as the ‘American method’ is a movement of the full arm off the shoulder. It does however not lend itself to rapid writing due to the energy required to move such large parts.

The best method for rapid writing is the ‘ Arm Movement Method ’. Here is a breakdown of how to use this method of handwriting. (Note: This is for right-handed people. If you ’re left-handed, just reverse the instructions to fit)

•  Place the center of your forearm on the desk, with the fleshy part taking the weight. •  Extend your arm behind the elbow over the edge of the table.  •  Rest your hand on the third and fourth fingers (or preferred pen grasp). •  Use your wrist and forearm to move across the page instead of just your fingers. •  Keep your elbow at an angle of more than 90° to avoid excessive flexion.

Although there are numerous Dos and Don’ts when it comes to correct positioning, the actual arm movements are key. If you want faster writing, try to use your forearm muscles to move across the page. Avoid relying on the delicate wrist and finger muscles.

The table below highlights some techniques you can use to help you achieve neat handwriting:

Helpful . You were speaking facts 👍

This was a very helpful article! I did not know that there was so much to writing fastly and neatly. Only one thing- the explanation of the Arm Movement Method was a bit confusing for me. It would help if they had a visual presentation.

Wow I did it because of your the thing you told me how to do it 🤣👍🥳🙏😊🥰👍✍🏻💪 thank you ☺️

Very good article. Simple and actionable advices. I would just argue about 1 thing. It says ‘’it has been found that it is easier to write up and down than side-to-side’’ because fingers only bend up and down. Later, it says to use ‘’arm movement’’ for faster movement. I would argue that it is much easier to write side to side when using arm movement.

10 Easy Ways to Improve Your Handwriting

Handwriting Illustration

In this post you’re going to learn easy ways to improve your handwriting. If you follow these tips you’ll have perfect penmanship in no time.

I used these same tips to make my handwriting better in just a matter of days.

Ready to learn how to write neatly?

Let’s get started!

Use a Nice Pen

The first step in learning how to write nicely is to use a nice pen. No, it does not need to be an expensive or rare pen, just high quality.

Nice pens help improve your handwriting because they have more consistent ink flow and offer more control. However, there is not one perfect pen. You will need to experiment with a few until you find one that feels good in your hand and gives you the consistency to create identical letters every time.

Consider experimenting with ball point, fountain or fineliners at first. Each pen style will produce a different line thickness and give you a different feel.

Learn Correct Pen Grip

At this point in your life you probably don’t even give a second thought to how you hold your pen. But the experts agree that there are really only one or two correct ways to hold a pen.

The primary way is to hold the pen between your thumb and index finger with the body of the pen resting on your middle finger.

The next most common way is to hold the pen between your thumb and both the index and middle finger with the pen resting against your ring finger.

Whether you decide to change your pen grip or not, the most important thing is to hold the pen lightly. Your hand should be relaxed and comfortable with no tension.

Use Your Wrist and Arm

There are two main types of writers: those that write with their fingers and those that write with their forearm and shoulder. Your fingers should be used as a guide rather than to draw the letters.

If when you are writing for an extended period of time and your hand starts to get tired, then you know you are a “finger” writer. Using your shoulder and forearm will be much less tiring and give you a more consistent handwriting style.

To improve your handwriting focus on keeping your forearm, wrist, and fingers still and let your arm and shoulder move the pen.

As you are writing move the paper away from you as you move down the page. Do not move your hand into an uncomfortable position that will affect your handwriting.

Maintain Good Posture

When you are writing in your notebook or bullet journal it is important to be in a comfortable position and maintain good posture. Try to sit up straight and avoid hunching over your paper.

You should be able to move your arm and shoulder freely without anything on your desk getting in your way.

Having perfect posture can improve your handwriting, but staying relaxed and comfortable in your chair will yield the greatest results.

Take Your Time to Improve Penmanship

During my first year of architecture school we were required to hand draft all of our presentation drawings, or “blueprints” as some might call them. That means we were required to draw our floorplans by hand with lead holders rather than using a computer program and printer.

After we spent dozens of hours working on one drawing, the last step was to title the board.

Our professor encouraged us to just think about just one letter at a time to avoid making a critical mistake at the last minute. So if I was writing the word “FLOOR PLAN” my professor told me to say the letter “F” out loud as I was writing the first letter. Then “L,” “O,” “O,” “R,” etc.

Sure, I probably sounded ridiculous sounding my letters out loud, but this was an incredibly easy way to improve my handwriting. I suggest following a similar process if you want better handwriting as well.

As you write, think about or say each letter out loud. Focus on writing each letter as neatly as possible. Over time you will be able to write faster and still maintain your perfect handwriting. But in the beginning, taking your time will help you dramatically improve your handwriting.

Use Lined Paper

If you open a blank notebook or bullet journal and start writing, you are going to have less control over your handwriting than if you used lined paper.

Handwriting looks neat when lines of words are properly aligned and is consistent across the page. If you are trying to improve your handwriting the first step is to use lined paper.

In the event you need to write on a blank piece of paper, put a piece of notebook paper underneath to give you a guide or draw lines lightly with a pencil that can be erased when you are finished.

Use Proper Spacing to Write Neatly

What’s the difference between good handwriting and perfect penmanship?

The answer is proper letter spacing and alignment!

Each letter must be the same size and equal width apart. When writing in cursive your letters should maintain the same angle at all times.

When printing your letters respect the space above and below the letters when writing “g” or “t” or other tall letters. Do not let your letters touch the row above it and mainain a clean white space between lines.

Practice Each Letter of the Alphabet

If you want to make your handwriting better, you should practice writing each letter of the alphabet.

Yes, practicing your letters seems like something your third grade teacher might tell you. But I’m here to remind you that prefect handwriting is the result of deliberate practice.

Print out worksheets you find online or dedicate a few pages in your bullet journal just to practicing your letters.

Stick With One Style of Handwriting

One mistake I’ve made in the past when trying to improve my penmanship was constantly changing my handwriting style.

I would switch from cursive to printing and then to a lazy combination of both. It was like I was having a handwriting identity crisis.

I even experimented with different signatures!

Please don’t make this same mistake.

Pick one style of handwriting and continue to practice until it’s perfect. Then, if you are feeling abitious, you can move on to mastering calligraphy or other forms of handlettering.

Get Inspired By Pretty Handwriting

If there’s one thing I’ve learned on my journey to improve my handwriting, it’s that I’m my own worst critic. If you’re anything like me, there’s hope.

To avoid becoming discouraged with my handwriting I started looking for inspiration online. My handwriting wasn’t horrible to begin with but I knew it could be better. So I started searching for images of handwriting that I liked, but was still similar to mine.

These images gave me ideas on how to improve my current handwriting without having to change my handwriting completely. Then, I was able to focus just on improving the parts of my penmanship that were less than perfect and leave the good parts.

How to Easily Improve Your Handwriting Speed

Picture of a pen resting on a notebook.

Handwriting is one of those skills that you generally learn as a kid, and then never try to actively improve as you grow up. However, being able to write faster has some significant benefits, which are especially important for people who often need to write things by hand , such as university students. These benefits include:

  • Increased automaticity , which lessens the burden on working memory. This means that you don’t have to actively concentrate on the act of writing itself, and that you can instead focus on thinking about what to write.
  • Increased overlap  between the mental generation of output and the consequent production of text relating to that output. This means that you can write your thoughts down immediately as you are forming them, without suffering from a delay which hinders your thought process.
  • Improved performance in various academic tasks, and especially those that require a lot of handwriting under time constraints, such as taking notes during lectures or writing essays during in-class exams.

Below is a collection of tips and strategies, which can help you learn how to write faster by hand. Some of these can be implemented immediately with no effort, while others require a bit of practice.

You don’t have to do everything that’s listed here; it’s fine to pick out even just one or two things that you want to focus on while writing. Doing this will require only a minimal amount of effort on your part, and will still allow you to gain a significant improvement in your writing speed over a short period of time.

Fix your handwriting technique

Improving your handwriting technique is a good way to improve your writing speed.

  • Good handwriting technique involves using your fingers as guides, and moving the pen using your forearm and shoulder muscles. This allows you to write quickly, without tiring out or getting cramps.
  • Bad handwriting technique involves drawing the letters using your fingers, moving your wrist constantly, and repeatedly picking up your hand from the paper in order to move it across as you write. These issues slow down your writing, and cause your hand to tire out and cramp.

How to get your technique right: in order to get a sense of which muscles you should use, try holding your arm in front of you, while writing large letters in the air. Use the guidelines above in order to see which technical practices you should follow, and which you should avoid.

Once you get used to these movements , try to implement them as you write on paper, while making sure to keep the technical guidelines in mind, and to check up on your technique from time to time as you write.

Maintain good posture

Maintaining good posture is an easy way to improve your writing speed, while also helping you stay healthy and feel more comfortable while you write.

To help improve your posture , you ideally want to be seated with your feet resting flat on the floor, and with your hips and lower back supported by the chair. At the same time, your knees should be flexed to approximately 90˚, and your elbows should be slightly flexed, with your forearms resting comfortably on the desk surface.

You should avoid slouching over the paper while you write, since doing this puts unnecessary strain on your arm, which makes it more difficult to write.

In addition, make sure to set the height of the desk and the chair properly, in a way that encourages proper posture , based on the guidelines that we saw above. When the desk/chair combination is set with improper heights, you will find that it’s more difficult to maintain good posture, which hinders your writing.

Hold the pen whichever way feels comfortable

Research shows that your grasp (i.e. the way you hold the pen in your hand) doesn’t have much of an impact on your writing speed. Furthermore, note that when writing for extended periods of time, it’s natural to sometimes vary the way you hold the pen, so this is not necessarily indicative of a problem.

Therefore, as long as you feel comfortable while writing, you can hold the pen or pencil whichever way feels comfortable for you.

However, if the way that you naturally hold the writing utensil feels uncomfortable or causes you to cramp, and you decide that you want to improve it, it’s generally advisable to go with the commonly used dynamic tripod grip, which is shown in the image below.

grasping a pen using the dynamic tripod grip.

Using the dynamic tripod grip means the following:

  • The pen should be pinched between the thumb and index finger, slightly above the area where the sharp end of the pen meets the shaft.
  • There should be an open space between the thumb and index finger.
  • The pen should be resting against the middle finger.
  • The ring finger and little finger should be tucked into the palm.

Avoid gripping the pen too hard

People tend to grip their pen or pencil too hard, especially when trying to write quickly. The problem is that doing this slows you down, and causes your hand to tire.

The best way to avoid this is to consciously check up on yourself while you write, and make sure that you’re not gripping the pen too hard. It’s okay to hold it firmly, but you don’t want to be actively crushing it with your hands.

If you consistently correct yourself over time and avoid gripping too hard, then eventually you should be able to maintain the appropriate grip strength naturally.

Note that if you find yourself constantly gripping your pen too hard, it’s possible that you need to get a new one, that better fits your hand. You’ll read more about this in the next section.

Use a good writing implement

Using a good-quality writing implement that fits your hand properly can make a huge difference in your writing, without requiring much effort on your part. There are three main things that you should pay attention to:

  • Thickness – pick a pen that isn’t so thin that you end up having to squeeze it tightly, or so thick that it ends up being uncomfortable to hold. If necessary, you can increase the thickness of a pen by putting a small rubber grip on it. The right size for a pen depends on how big your hand is and on your personal preferences, so experiment and find out what works for you.
  • Tip size – pick a pen that has a tip size that you feel comfortable with (e.g. 0.5mm versus 0.9mm). Which one works better for you will again depend on your needs and preferences, so you should experiment and find out what works for you.
  • Quality- use a good quality pen, that doesn’t require you to press hard on the paper in order to get the ink out. This alone can make a huge difference, and a good pen doesn’t cost more than a few dollars, so there’s no reason why you shouldn’t just buy one.

Improve your handwriting style

You can increase your handwriting speed by making a few simple modifications to your handwriting style, and specifically by simplifying the way you write the letters. This means that you should try to get rid of excessive marks and styling, as long as omitting them has no impact on the legibility of your writing.

It’s also possible to modify the size of your letters, and in theory, if you decrease the size of your letters, you will need to move your arm less when you write, which should enable you to write faster.

However, this is not necessarily true in practice, and reducing the letter size might end up slowing you down, by making it more difficult for you to write the individual letters. Since this is also something that varies from person to person, you can experiment and see what works for you.

Use a shorthand writing system

A sample text written in Gregg shorthand

Shorthand writing systems use various unique symbols, which can replace letters, common letter combinations, sounds, or frequently-used words, in order to save time as you write. You can either learn an existing shorthand system, or develop your own. Commonly used shorthand variants include Gregg , Pitman , and Teeline .

One of the ways to benefit from the use of shorthand without having to put a lot of effort into learning a full shorthand writing system, is to focus only on a small number of words which appear frequently in the language, such as ‘the’ and ‘to’. It’s relatively easy to simplify these words, and doing so can lead to a significant improvement in your writing speed, while still keeping your writing fairly legible.

Examples of frequently-used words written in Pitman shorthand

Finally, keep in mind that the more you rely on shorthand, the more difficult it will be for others to decipher your notes. This can be either an advantage or a disadvantage, depending on your preferences.

Summary and conclusions

  • Improving your handwriting speed can have significant benefits, such as increased automaticity, increased overlap between mental generation of output and the consequent production of text, and improved performance in academic tasks.
  • There are a lot of things you can do in order to improve your handwriting speed, and you can pick which aspects you want to work on, as each of them will lead to notable benefits by itself.
  • In terms of writing technique, make sure to use your fingers as guides, and move the pen using the forearm and shoulder muscles, while maintaining a good posture. Avoid drawing the letters with your fingers, moving your wrist constantly, repeatedly picking your hand up from the paper, gripping the pen too hard, or slouching over the paper.
  • Make sure to get a good writing implement that is convenient for you to write with, in terms of not being too thin or too thick, and in terms of having a comfortable tip size. Furthermore, make sure that the pen is of high-quality, and that you don’t have to press too hard on the paper in order to write with it.
  • Finally, in order to increase your handwriting speed, you can also choose to simplify the way you write the letters, or use a shorthand writing system. The greatest benefits of using such systems come from simplifying frequently used words (such as ‘the’), which saves you a lot of time while requiring relatively little effort.

We’ve all been there: you’re reviewing your lecture notes but can’t seem to make out your words as they run together and tilt off the page. It would be great if you didn’t have to decode your own writing, so is there any way you can make it better? Whether you’re trying to reign in unruly letters or get back your handwriting flair from years ago, we’ll show you the techniques to use to improve your handwriting. Read on to learn how!

Things You Should Know

  • Find handwriting inspiration online to develop your handwriting style. Copy your favorite letters to incorporate them into your writing.
  • Write out the alphabet to make your letters consistent. Then, practice writing full sentences.
  • Hand write things every chance you get. Write out work to-dos, school notes, start a journal, and send letters to friends.

Step 1 Write a paragraph...

  • Look at the size of your letters in relation to each other, too. Capital letters should be larger than lowercase ones, while tall letters like “t” should extend past small letters like “a.”

Step 8 Determine the areas that you want to improve.

  • You don’t have to adopt an entirely new style or copy someone else’s word for word. Just pick and choose certain aspects of different styles to incorporate the shapes and letters into your writing and make them your own.

Step 2 Find a comfortable grip on your pen or pencil.

  • Your general posture can help improve your writing, too. Wiggle your wrist to loosen it and relax your shoulders as you write.

Step 4 Study a directional...

  • When you find the type of pen or pencil you like, experiment with different lead sizes and pen tips to find what thickness makes your handwriting pop, too.

Step 6 Practice your alphabet.

  • If writing the same phrase over again gets tiring, write down some of your favorite quotes and song lyrics, or practice your own name.

Step 8 Handwrite things whenever you can.

  • To practice your writing every day, start a journal , make your to-do lists by hand, or complete handwriting practice sheets.

8 Tips to Improve Your Handwriting (Plus a Free Worksheet) | The Postman's Knock

People often assume that calligraphy and handwriting are synonymous, but they’re not. In general, calligraphy is comprised of stylized, embellished letters — it’s more art than writing. Conversely, handwriting refers to the style and technique that you use for everyday jotting. Handwriting needs to be quicker and more casual than calligraphy. While everyone has their own personal handwriting style, there’s always room for improvement! In this article, you’ll find eight tips to help you improve your handwriting in video and written form — plus a free worksheet.

How to Improve Your Handwriting: The Video

Let’s have a little chat about how to improve your handwriting! You’re invited into my snowy sunroom to talk about all the different ways you can make your penmanship a bit better:

How to Improve Your Handwriting: The Article

1. use a nice pen.

The adjective “nice” is subjective — you’ll have to hunt to find the pen that works for you! Right now, I’m loving Muji 0.38 mm pens because they’re responsive and write such a fine line. I like Sakura Gelly Roll white pens for writing on dark papers. Keep in mind that preferences change, though, and there’s always a new pen or pencil to discover.

how to write neat and fast

Handwriting purists tend to love fountain pens, and I happily agree that my Pilot Falcon is fabulous. But, don’t be fooled into thinking that a pen will magically transform your handwriting. Yes, a nice pen helps, but it’s not the be-all, end-all of pretty penmanship.

2. Maintain a Relaxed Grip

A relaxed, fairly loose grip is one of the main things that will improve your handwriting. None of the muscles in your hand should feel tense or flexed, and your fingernails shouldn’t be white from squeezing the pen’s barrel.

8 Tips to Improve Your Handwriting (Plus a Free Worksheet) | The Postman's Knock

Many people tend to clutch the pen, which will result in an achy hand and shaky writing. We often clutch without realizing we’re doing it, so try to mentally check yourself every few minutes to make sure you’re still holding the pen comfortably.

3. Improve Your Handwriting With Drills

Whether you plan on writing in cursive or print, it can be difficult to form nice letters without warming up. Doing a couple of simple drills will help you to write clear, confident characters. You can use the Drills section of the Improve Your Cursive Worksheet …

… Or you can doodle a few “telephone wires” or similar forms.

If you’re interested in additional drills, the Improve Your Handwriting Online Course features several helpful exercises! Handwriting drills tend to be simple but mighty, and the more you do them, the more of a difference you’ll notice.

4. Experiment with Paper Rotations

As children, we are generally taught to keep our paper in a vertical position in front of us. If that works for you, great! If not, feel free to experiment with different paper rotations. Keeping the paper at a certain angle can go a long way in helping you to improve your handwriting!

8 Tips to Improve Your Handwriting (Plus a Free Worksheet) | The Postman's Knock

Many right-handed people are fine with the traditional vertical paper position, but I’m not one of them. I have always found it easier to write — particularly in cursive– when my paper has a severe counterclockwise rotation. Lefties should try rotating their paper clockwise. For clarification, see my How to Improve Your Handwriting video .

5. Practice with a Worksheet

If you want a structured way to improve your handwriting, I made a free worksheet for you! It’s three pages long and focuses on cursive writing — you can download it by clicking here . Basically, the worksheet takes you through drills, capital and lowercase letters, words, and sentences.

8 Tips to Improve Your Handwriting (Plus a Free Worksheet) | The Postman's Knock

The cursive writing featured in the worksheet set isn’t any sort of formal style. Instead, it focuses on the letterforms that I, personally, use in everyday cursive handwriting. Those letters are easy to create, and they connect to each other beautifully to make for quick writing. For intensive exercises and instructions over how to write vintage-style cursive, check out TPK’s Elegant Cursive Handwriting Worksheet . It’s a fabulous investment if you want to infuse your penmanship with sophistication.

This delicately beautiful letter was written using a Pilot Falcon fountain pen and elegant cursive handwriting.

Here’s a list of all the structured handwriting worksheets and instructions that TPK has to offer:

  • Improve Your Cursive Worksheet Set – A free worksheet with helpful practice opportunities
  • Grammy’s Handwriting Exemplar – A free worksheet that offers letterforms based on my grandmother’s beautiful handwriting
  • Learn Cursive Worksheet for Kids (and Adults!) – A worksheet that teaches you how to write in cursive with the help of this free supplementary course
  • Elegant Cursive Handwriting Worksheet – A detailed worksheet set that teaches you how to write in elegant, vintage-style penmanship

6. Sneak in Practice to Improve Your Handwriting

Just like anything else, you will improve your handwriting with use. The more you write using good habits and implementing styles that appeal to you, the better your handwriting will get.

Elegant and Effective Letter Writing Tips | The Postman's Knock

You can get practice through a number of ways — for example, you might send someone a hand-written letter in place of an email or text. If you have the time and interest, you can start writing in a journal every night. Entries don’t have to be long; they can be short accounts of how your day went!

7. Write on Lined Paper or Use a Template

Writing nice, balanced words are a big shortcut to neat handwriting! If you want to write a letter to someone, you can put a piece of notebook paper under printer paper. More than likely, you’ll be able to see the notebook paper lines through the printer paper, and you can use those lines as guidelines for even writing. Or, if you don’t mind the lines, you can write someone a letter directly on notebook paper.

8 Tips to Improve Your Handwriting (Plus a Free Worksheet) | The Postman's Knock

This point reminds me of another tip: always use a “padding” piece of paper. No matter what piece of paper you’re writing on, it should always have another piece of paper under it. For some reason, the slightly cushier surface provided by two pieces of paper makes it easier for all pens to write!

8. Embrace Your Personal Style

Handwriting is a very fluid, personal thing that is always evolving. It’s not like calligraphy, where you more or less write the same every time. Instead, you’ll have neat days, and you’ll have not-so-neat days (like the notes pictured below).

8 Tips to Improve Your Handwriting (Plus a Free Worksheet) | The Postman's Knock

No matter how your handwriting looks, it is a wonderful reflection of you and your mood. That’s why people love receiving handwritten notes: they represent a piece of you! So, don’t get too hung up on a radical change: instead, focus on making clearly formed alphabet characters that are clear and legible.

How to Make a Beautiful Handwritten Note

I hope that you enjoyed this article, and that it inspires you to ditch the keyboard and write something by hand this weekend! Don’t forget that you can download the Improve Your Cursive Worksheet for free if you want a cursive refresher. It’s not a complicated little worksheet, and it should be helpful.

Thanks very, very much for reading TPK, and enjoy the rest of your day!

Are You a Slow Writer

Are you a Slow Writer? – Write Faster and Neater in 6 Simple Steps

Do you want to learn how to write faster and neater?

Imagine what it would be like to have words flowing effortlessly from your pen that are beautifully scripted and easy to read.

I know the feeling the faster I wrote, the worse my handwriting got to where it was barely legible. Something had to be done, but where to start.

After extensive research, I found the solution of how to write faster and better . If you follow the 6 steps, then you will also be able to.

Table of Contents

  • 1 Why Do You Want to Write Faster and Neater?
  • 2 Are You Using The Right Pen?
  • 3 It’s all abut the Grip
  • 4 Find Your Style
  • 5 First Steps to Improving Speed & Neatness
  • 6 Turbo Charge Your Handwriting

1. Why Do You Want to Write Faster and Neater?

Are you a slow writer whose handwriting resembles a spider crawling over the page after treading in an inkblot?

Maybe you are ashamed of your writing or can’t keep up in the classroom because as you write faster your handwriting becomes more illegible .

If this rings any bells don’t worry you are not alone and we can fix it so that your writing is quicker and neater.

First address why do you want to write faster and neater?

Improving your writing is a skill that will take time and practice to master . You need to keep motivated until you have fast, neat handwriting.

In a similar way, someone who is overweight needs to find their reasons for wanting to lose weight. This keeps them motivated and stick to the diet plan.

Studies show that having a powerful reason helps to achieve goals . By setting a goal it guides your focus, triggering new behaviors sustaining motivation.

Remember, motivation starts within. Find it, keep it, and make it work for you.

2. Are You Using The Right Pen?

Is your pen suitable for fast handwriting? The best pens have smooth writing ink with low friction between the pen’s tip and the paper’s surface.

Pen Writing Speed Comparison

Figure 1 shows rollerball and fountain pens are the fastest to write with but they also have the wettest ink. This makes them more prone to smudging; therefore a gel pen is a better option .

Check out our guides, Speed Writing Essentials: How to Choose The Perfect Pen and The 3 Best Pens For Fast Handwriting where we covered this in a lot more depth and recommend three inexpensive pens.

3. It’s all about the Grip

There are many articles on the web showing you “How to Write Faster” stressing the importance of a tripod grip.

This is totally wrong the American Journal of Occupational Therapy carried out a study into the Effect of Pencil Grasp on The Speed and Legibility of Handwriting in Children.

They concluded that

“Pencil grasp patterns did not influence handwriting speed or legibility in this sample of typically developing children. This finding adds to the mounting body of evidence that alternative grasps may be acceptable for fast and legible handwriting.”

The best grip is the one that you are most comfortable with.

4. Find Your Style

A Cursive style of writing is the fastest but takes practice to make it neater. This may not suit everyone however there are a couple of other options.

YOU MAY FIND IT QUICKER AND EASIER TO WRITE NEATLY IN ALL CAPS.

Or maybe writing in lower case is faster for you

It’s worth practicing both these methods to see which suits you best if you don’t have the time and patience to master cursive writing.

If you are considering practicing writing in lower case, copy and paste several brief paragraphs of interesting or motivational text into a word document.

Select all the text Windows users then press CTRL and A then change the font to Comic Sans Ms and print it out.

Next trace over the letters with a pen it is a proven strategy to learn a style of writing quicker than mindlessly copying out written text hundreds of times.

Occupational therapists widely use comic Sans to teach children suffering from dyslexia how to write as letters can appear less crowded.

5. First Steps to Improving Speed & Neatness

Here’s the kicker: it takes practice if you want to reach your goal of becoming a faster writer with neat and clear handwriting.

Gary Player, a famous golfer, once said “The Harder I Practice The Luckier I Get.”

The same is true for writing.

First concentrate on neatness and the speed will come with plenty of practice.

6. Turbo-Charge Your Handwriting

What’s the magic formula that will turbo-charge your handwriting enabling you to write faster and neater?

I prefer to learn in a structured format.

It helps me to focus on nailing it down and then moving on to the next part.

If you are the same as me, don’t worry.

There are two excellent books that teach a quick and neat italic style of writing.

Write Now: The Complete Programme For Better Handwriting.

Write Now Programme For Better Handwriting

Buy on Amazon

Write Now the Complete Programme For Better Handwriting written by Babara Getty and Inga Dubay.

They designed it as a self-instructional course in basic and cursive italic handwriting.

In the book, the authors state that:

“Italic provides both the young person & the adult with letterforms that are highly suited to a rapid, legible handwriting.”

Its Amazon reviews are very positive which is hardly surprising as both authors are former professors.

Barbara Getty, B.A., M.A.T. , was an adjunct professor at Portland Community College where she taught calligraphy and handwriting from 1969 to 1999.

Inga Dubay, B.A., was an adjunct professor at Oregon, College of Art and Craft in Portland, Oregon where she taught calligraphy for 25 years, and handwriting in public and private schools for thirteen years.

The Handwriting Repair Guide

The Handwriting Repair Guide

The Handwriting Repair Guide The Italic Approach by Gunnlaugur SE Briem. has easy-to-follow guidance on how to write in Italic and includes all the printable worksheets you need to practice with.

Best of all, it’s free

Simply Click Here to download with patience and practice it will amaze you at what you can achieve.

Gunnlaugur SE Briem’s introduction starts with “The faster you write, the worse it looks. The simplest way to make it better is to slow down.”

So why am I recommending a book with this introduction?

Cursive and italic writing is the fastest way to write, and this book makes it really easy to learn italic writing.

In the book, Briem says that:

“Most people can learn the movement for italic in twenty minutes. Then you add recognition points.”

And in his summary.

“Once you know what you’re doing, you can pick up speed.”

To sum up, find what motivates you, then choose the right pen. Don’t worry about how you hold the pen comfort is more important.

Next, choose which style of writing works best for you, then practice makes perfect as they say. Finally, following a course will make it easier to reach your goal of becoming a fast writer with neat handwriting.

6 Simple Steps to Improve Your Handwriting as an Adult

Improve your handwriting steps

Table of Contents

You love the idea of hand lettering and calligraphy. But if your penmanship is embarrassing, how do you improve your handwriting so that you can create hand lettering art you’re proud of?

You’re definitely not alone in the poor handwriting category. Many people struggle with their penmanship and want to improve their handwriting as an adult. The good news? You can practice and improve your handwriting quickly.

In this post, we’ll explore 6 steps to improve your handwriting as an adult, including:

  • Analyze your handwriting
  • Focus on consistency
  • Experiment with writing utensils
  • Learn traditional calligraphy
  • Practice—a LOT.

Continue reading for more details on these steps to improve your handwriting!

First Things First: Why You Might Want to Improve Your Handwriting as an Adult

Maybe you’re looking to monetize your hand lettering hobby, or maybe you just want to be able to send a handwritten thank you note that looks like it was written by an adult.

You might even be experiencing judgment from coworkers if your handwriting is illegible or looks like a 5-year old did it.

Improving your handwriting will not only make your writing legible, it will also bring about confidence in your work. As a result, you’ll also be taken more seriously.

And if you’re on this Lettering League site, chances are you might want to improve your coordination so you can use your penmanship to:

  • Create a bullet journal that is post-worthy
  • Master your hand lettering skills
  • Have more hand control when drawing

Improving your handwriting does take LOTS of practice, especially focused practice. Most importantly, you will need to slow down—even the best hand letterers and calligraphers take their time when working on their craft!

First, analyze your handwriting

Before you can improve your handwriting, you first need to do a full audit of your writing.

Write a paragraph or two on paper by copying some text out of a book or from your phone. The more you write, the more you’ll be able to see patterns (good and bad). Take your time, but also try to write at your normal pace.

Once you’re done, you can start to analyze some things about your writing that you wish to improve:

  • Spacing : Spacing between letters should be consistent, and spacing between words should also match up!
  • Slant : Does the slant of your letters match, or is it all over the place, tilting left and then tilting right?
  • Style : Are your letters formed the same, or does your style go all over the place?
  • Height of letters : The heights of the lower case letters should all match up, and same with upper case letters.
  • Consistent baseline for letters : Do your words line up on the bottom, or does it bounce around and go astray?
  • Closing counters : I’m totally guilty of this one… when rushing, do you leave your O’s and similar letters open?
  • Dotting your i’s : And cross your T’s… blah blah blah.

Once your hand recovers from writing so much (ouch!) try writing the same passage again, paying attention to what you want to improve. Here you can see improvements in my writing already. Sure, it took me longer, but the payoff is worth it!

Improve your handwriting by writing more

As a digital society, we tend to stick to our computers and phones when writing notes and emails. Our hand muscles for writing and drawing are going unused! Muscle memory is important for anything we do, even writing with pen and paper. If you don’t have regular practice, you’re going to have a harder time writing neatly.

Taking 10-15 minutes each day to write neatly and slowly  can vastly improve your handwriting. Schedule time into your calendar to write a page or two (like right after a meal or when you wake up). Write as neatly as you can, about anything. Maybe even kill two birds with one stone by keeping a daily handwritten journal.

I personally have managed to vastly improve my handwriting as an adult by journaling and taking notes on my iPad Pro .

Focus on Consistency to Improve Your Handwriting

Consistency is key. No matter what style you practice of your own handwriting, whether it’s cursive or not, you want to find a set of letter styles that you like to write and that look good together.

Practice with varying slopes and angles, heights of your letters, roundness of letters, etc. Once you start to see a style pattern in your handwriting, practice the same letter over and over again (literally fill one page with a’s and then the next with b’s) until you start to feel comfortable.

For slants, you can even create your own angled calligraphy guide and place it under your paper to practice.

Experiment with Pens and Writing Utensils to Maximize Your Handwriting Improvement

There are seemingly countless brands and types of pens and writing utensils available. It’s up to you to find the style of pen that works best for the level of control, line thickness, pressure, and preference you prefer.

For example, some gel pens are too slippery and move too fast. A super fine pen may not work for someone with a heavy hand. Cheaper ballpoint pens may be clumpy and messy.

For basic handwriting, I prefer fine felt tip markers over any other type of writing utensil, because they provide more friction on the paper and help me slow down. You can even practice with an old fashioned #2 pencil in order to help you slow down to improve your handwriting.

Recently, my favorite pens for beautiful handwriting include:

  • The Pilot G2 for faster writing on more textured paper
  • The Zebra F301 for slower writing on smoother paper

Learn Traditional Calligraphy to Improve Your Handwriting Skills

I know this seems counter-intuitive. It’s like I’m telling you to run before you can walk. However, I saw vast improvements with my hand lettering after I studied calligraphy. Learning how to form letters traditionally can help you understand consistency and anatomy.

My recommendation: learn basic strokes of brush calligraphy .

Grab a calligraphy book that isn’t for pointed-pen calligraphy (I recommend Calligraphy for Dummies ) and a $1 grid composition book or cheap graph paper. Studying this book helped me slow down (super important!!) and focus on consistent letterforms.

Finally, Practice. Practice. Practice.

I can’t stress how important regular practice is! If improving your handwriting sounds like a chore to you, try to make it fun:

  • Journal daily—with pen and paper.
  • Write letters to your friends (because really, everyone would love to receive a handwritten letter!).
  • Write out your grocery list as neatly as possible.
  • Leave handwritten notes in your kids’ lunches.
  • Take notes—even sketchnotes—when listening to a podcast or watching an educational YouTube video.
  • Start a bullet journal.

Even if you can’t dedicate time to daily practice, make it a point to write neatly for everything  you write down—notes at work or school, filling out forms, etc.

All in all, slow down, pay attention, and work to find the handwriting style that is best for you, along with your preferred pen type and paper combination.

What are some ways you’re going to try to improve your handwriting?

How To Write Faster and Send More Work Out Into The World

Our guide offers a list of 18  practical tips  that will help you learn how to write faster and press publish more often.

Do you want to learn how to write faster?

Years ago, I was frustrated with my  writing time . It took me days to complete basic  writing projects  like  blogging  articles or even  rough drafts . I couldn’t beat  writer’s block , let alone meet a  word count  or submit articles on time. My freelance writing business suffered, and I didn’t hit my yearly  writing goals  for a long time.

I eventually realized I needed to  tweak  my process if I wanted to improve my  writing skills .

Using the  writing tips  I’ve listed below, I improved my  writing speed  and submitted and published more work on time. I also used some of these strategies to write books.

Dragon offers professional-grade speech to text with near 95% accuracy. It's available on iOS and Android.

Dragon Anywhere

1. Outline Your Work In Advance

2. prepare your writing the night before, 3. ensure correct ergonomics, 4. eliminate all distractions, 5. practice your typing skills, 6. write the way you speak.

  • 7. Use Dictation Or Transcription Software

8. Write Now, Edit Later

9. use placeholder words, 10. separate writing from proofreading.

  • 11. Use Editing Software To Fix Typos

12. Balance Quality With Quantity

13. keep a writing routine, 14. write every day, 15. stick to what you know, 16. use a timer.

  • 17. Avoid Perfectionism

18. Set Two Deadlines

How to write fast: the final word, how come i do not catch all of my mistakes when i proofread, is it a good idea for me to use dictation programs to write faster, what’s the fastest way to write, how do you write neatly and fast, voice dictation resources.

How to write fast

Writing quickly is much simpler when you’ve worked out what you’re going to say. Before you  start  writing  your  first draft , create a simple bullet-point outline. Tools like  Dynalist  or even index cards are good for this.

Start by answering these questions:

  • What is the article about?
  • What are the key ideas for each section?
  • What takeaways do you have for the reader?

Sum it all up in five to ten bullet points. Lay the ideas out in your writing app . Then, organize them. It’s easier to edit and rearrange bullet points than hundreds of words of text.

Laying out your notes, ideas, and research the night before offers two benefits:

One, you can sit down at your desk and  start writing  a  great article  immediately the following morning.

Two, it triggers your brain to work on the piece or idea subconsciously, meaning you’ll find it easier and faster to express yourself once you do sit down to write.

Think about your posture

Consider the ergonomics of your work desk; you need to clearly see the words as they go up on the page. Think about the contrast on your computer screen. How bright is the computer? Is it causing a lot of eye strain?

You may want to consider inverting the color scheme on your computer–this means that you can make the background of the page black and the text white. Depending on the light level in the room, this could be more comfortable for your eyes and reduce strain.

While writing, get as comfortable as possible. You might want to invest in a good  writing desk  or chair that takes the pressure off your back. Make sure your keyboard is at an appropriate height as well. If you have the room and the budget, a  standing desk  is an even better choice.

You should also make sure the screen is at an appropriate level for your eyes. If it’s too far up, you’ll get eye strain, and if it’s too far down, you’ll get neck strain.

Once you are comfortable while writing, you can focus on your ideas instead of on any discomfort you’re experiencing.

If you want to write faster, eliminate distractions for your working area. There are several common distractions that can make it difficult to focus during the  act of writing . These include:

  • A TV on in the background
  • Music with lyrics
  • Social media  notifications
  • A noisy phone

If you’re facing lots of distractions, you’ll have a hard time concentrating. Personally, I love sports. It is tempting to put ESPN on in the background while I work, but I’ve learned the hard way that it is a terrible idea for me.

Unfortunately, I know if ESPN is on the TV, I’m unlikely to write fast. In order to eliminate this distraction, I have to move to a room that does not have a TV in it, so there is no chance I can put on ESPN.

If you enjoy music but find that songs with lyrics distract you, try finding playlists of instrumental music. Not all instrumental is elevator music! There’s some great electronic, acoustic, and even hard rock that has no distracting voices.

Try searching for playlists on apps like Spotify with names like ‘study music’ or “focus music’. These tend to be at least an hour-long and contain mellow background music that won’t distract you while you work.

If you need help eliminating digital distractions like  social media , remember to leave your phone in another room from where you write. You can also use apps like Rescue Time and Freedom App to block internet access for predetermined periods.

YouTube video

Typing speed  matters if you want to master  writing fast . You can use  Typing.com  or purchase software from  Amazon  to improve the speed and accuracy of your typing.

Instead of spending a  lot of time  hunting and pecking at the keyboard, you can focus on your narrative while maintaining a smooth  writing flow . A good  keyboard for writing  can also dramatically reduce  typos . If you suffer from RSI, consider buying a good  mouse for carpal tunnel syndrome .

Dragon Dictate

If you’re encountering  writer’s block , write like you are talking to a good friend. Visualize carrying on a conversation with the reader if you have to! Sometimes writing as if to a friend helps you say more in  less time . Your outline serves as speaking notes for this conversation. You can always tidy up and edit for clarity later.

This tip works well as you can write while out for a walk, and walking breeds creativity. You can easily dictate on the go using a voice recorder or an app like Dragon Anywhere or Otter.ai.

7. Use  Dictation  Or Transcription Software

This is another one of those  great tips  that people often don’t know about–Take advantage of  dictation  and transcription software programs!

If you are exploring speech-to-text software programs for the first time, check out Otter.AI, Dragon Anywhere or  Google Docs .

As long as your computer has a microphone, you can speak to your computer instead of typing. This method for  writing fast  will reduce errors, increase your speed, and prevent wrist injuries.

Dragon  learns the intricacies of your particular voice, improving accuracy the longer you use it. It’s a great program to use if you want to get more value from your  dictation .

You can also explore human transcription services like Rev for increasing your writing speed while guaranteeing accuracy. That said, you’ll need a bigger budget. It costs $1.25 per minute.

If you use transcription software, edit your work at the end, not as you go. If you try to edit your work and dictate it you won’t get the benefit of the speed it offers. Continually stopping to correct small mistakes will slow your  writing process  way down.

Furthermore, you’ll overlook a lot of transcription mistakes. You will probably see what you intended to write, not what is actually there.

Instead, wait until you get to the end of your  rough draft . Then, edit it from start to finish.

If you need help, check out our  self-editing checklist .

A placeholder word stands in for some research or a gap in your work. They enable you to keep writing without stopping to go down a research or Google  rabbit hole .

The most usable placeholder word or phrase is “TK”. It stands for “to come”. No words in the English language begin with this phrase, and you’ll spot it quickly in your work while self-editing. It also won’t screw up  formatting  during the editing process.

Even though proofreading is a critical part of the  writing process , you need to separate these two tasks. You can’t write and edit at the same time.

When I was trying to write quickly, I edited as I wrote my assignments. Like many beginning writers, I thought this would save me a  lot of time . It turned out to be the opposite–it slowed me way down!

Unfortunately, far too many errors fell through the cracks. A lot of clients were unhappy with my work. Fortunately, my clients gave me another chance, and I changed how I proofread my work. Both my writing and speed improved immediately.

If you are using  dictation  software, proofread carefully. Leave this until the end of the assignment. Then, read over everything one more time, and try to catch your mistakes.

11. Use Editing Software To Fix  Typos

It is impossible to catch every  typo . Delegate some of these  writing tasks  to advanced programs; the  best grammar checker software  will help you find and fix  typos  faster.

Even though  perfectionism  is the bane of many writers, you can shorten the  amount of time  you spend proofreading if you use a program you trust to catch these mistakes as you write.

These programs won’t catch everything, but they can help you eliminate  writing mistakes  that can hurt your reputation. These programs can also catch stylistic mistakes, particularly if you are producing  non-fiction  work.

It’s frustrating to find you’re not writing as many words per minute or per hour as you’d like. Instead of focusing on writing as many words as possible, make every  word count . Concision breeds clarity.

Fortunately, you don’t have to sacrifice the quality of your writing just because you would like to write faster. You simply have to use your time wisely.

If you take advantage of advanced software programs such as the  Hemingway  App  and plan out your work accordingly, you can get the most out of every word you put on the page while still meeting your deadlines.

To write faster and to keep a regular  writing habit , you need a set schedule. That way, you can get in the right frame of mind more easily. Think carefully about personal obligations you have to take care of. Then, plan out how you can schedule undisturbed  writing time  around your personal obligations.

Again, I am someone who loves sports. If I want to watch the football game during the weekend, I know I have to get my writing work done. I take a look at how many projects I have, calculate the number of words I have to write, and think about how long this is going to take me.

Then, I look for a block of time in my schedule when I can sit down and knock everything out. That way, I allow enough time to work, give myself a few minutes to get in the right frame of mind and make sure I keep my personal obligations as well.

Writing is like exercising a muscle–the more you do it, the better, faster, and stronger you’ll get. Your writing will become lean and efficient, saying a lot in a few words and becoming clear and precise.

This only works if you commit to writing on a constant, daily basis. If you only write occasionally and spend most of your time doing all the other parts of running a writing business, you won’t get that practice in.

Try doing free-writing exercises if you need to exercise your writing muscle or you have trouble starting for the day. First, start a timer for 5 or 10 minutes. Then, open up a document or a notepad, and write whatever comes into your head.

Don’t stop for anything until the timer goes off! You’re not trying to be clear or have perfect grammar. You’re just trying to warm up your writing muscles, the way athletes stretch their muscles before a race.

If you’re an aspiring freelancer, you’ll probably take on lots of projects. After all, the more work you have, the more you can earn. When I first tried to  become a writer , I picked up freelance  writing projects  I didn’t know anything about.

For example, if you pick up a project on computer coding, you better be familiar with python, C#, or whatever the writing assignment is about. Otherwise, you are going to make a bad impression on the client and spend hours frantically researching down rabbit holes about a subject that can take years to master.

Even though the writing is an opportunity to learn about new topics, you do need to be careful with what you pick up. Think of every assignment as an audition. If you make a good impression on the client, they are going to request more work from you.

If you try to write about something you know nothing about, it is going to take you an inordinate  amount of time . Furthermore, the client will probably be unhappy with the work.

This doesn’t mean that you can only write about things you’re an expert on. General subjects are easier to research, while the more specific a topic is, the more you should know about the subject before taking it on.

The  Pomodoro Technique for writers  can help you produce more words in  less time . Essentially, set a timer for 25-30 minutes and write without interruption until the buzzer sounds. Then,  Stop writing .

Stop  mid-sentence  if you have to! Take a short break and repeat. After three to four sessions take a longer break. Eat. Nap. Go for a walk. Then get back to it for your next session.

This technique works well as it forces you to write faster and allows time for your mind and self-discipline muscles to recharge. It can also wire your brain to focus more heavily on your work for longer bursts of time, improving your deep focus.

17. Avoid  Perfectionism

Understand when enough is enough. Pursuing  perfectionism  is physically and mentally demanding. There’s nothing worse than staring at a  blank page  and being scared to put anything down because you worry it’ll sound cringeworthy or dumb.

If you try to write when you are tired, unmotivated, or disinterested, your writing quality will suffer tremendously. This will lead to confused readers and unhappy clients, so it’s important to stick to your schedule.

When you feel your mind starting to go, it is time to step away for the day. Even though it will take you longer to finish your work, you will keep the quality of your writing high if you put your work to the side and come back tomorrow. That way, you can write quickly without sacrificing quality.

Parkinson’s law states:

Work expands to fill the time allotted.

This law applies to most  writing projects . Give yourself a month and it’ll take a month. If this happens to you, remember deadlines have a way of focusing the mind.

Use them.

I recommend creating two deadlines. The first deadline is one based on your client’s needs of requirements. The second deadline is ideally earlier than the first deadline, so you’ve extra time when life intervenes.

Your work might not be perfect but it’s much easier to get feedback from a client or your readers if you ship it or submit it early.

Whether you’re a  blogger  or an author, learning how to write fast takes practice. But like a weightlifter in the gym, you can build writing muscles and produce more each week.

Get comfortable and create an outline before you  start writing . Take advantage of advanced  dictation  software, and place quality over quantity. Track your progress and maintain your focus on shipping.

FAQs About How To Write Fast

If you try to proofread your work as you go, your eyes often see what you intended to write instead of what is actually on the page. That is why you should take a break when you reach the end of a draft, let the work set for a little while, and then proofread it.

Try setting it aside overnight, if possible. Otherwise, a couple of hours away from it will give you a fresh perspective.

Dictation  programs can increase the speed you write at while also preventing your wrists from developing carpal tunnel. Remember to proofread carefully and eliminate  dictation  mistakes after you are finished with your draft.

To make quick  writing sessions  into an unbreakable habit, you need to develop a process. Try some of the suggestions above. Take the ones that work best for you and turn them into a step-by-step routine that you follow for every assignment. This is your personal  writing process .

Having a clear process will allow you to stop your  writing sessions  at any point and be able to pick right back up again where you left off without floundering around, trying to figure out where you were when you stopped.

Improving your handwriting uses a different set of skills than writing on a computer, but they coincide with the above advice, and with some practice, you can visibly improve your penmanship!

1. Practice writing using your forearm and shoulder muscles. Not only will you have more control of your pen, but your wrist and hand also won’t get strained or cramp up, allowing you to write at a steady rate for a longer time.

2. Pay attention to your posture as you write. Sit with your back straight and your feet evenly on the floor. Flex your elbows slightly and let your arms rest comfortably on the desk or table.

3. The way you hold a pen doesn’t really affect  writing speed  and neatness. Hold it the way you feel most comfortable, and don’t grip it too hard. This can tire out your hand muscles fast.

4. Practice writing every day. Start slowly, focusing on the individual letters, carefully and neatly writing each one. Eventually, this will become more automatic, and you’ll be able to speed up while still producing clear, neat handwriting that anybody can read.

How to Write Neatly and Fast?

Handwriting is crucial in conveying thoughts and important ideas. But in most cases, such very purpose of handwriting often sabotaged by the quality and neatness.

In some instances, time is the worst enemy. This happens when you are jotting something very important in a quick fashion. Writing fast deteriorates clarity and neatness of the handwriting.

So, how to write neatly and fast? There is no single rule here. But there are techniques you can use to write neatly and fast. In most cases, the techniques involve choosing the right pen, proper handling, and a lot of practice.

You can tell that improving handwriting speed and neatness takes a lot of practice. Using the perfect writing tool can also make a difference.

A perfect pen differs from person to another. We all have different preferences as far as choosing the best writing tool goes.

As a pen user, it is your job to find a pen that works well in your writing task. This is the first step to develop better handwriting.

In this post, we’ll be sharing with you some of the basic and helpful techniques on how to write neatly and fast.

Let’s dive into the strategies…

Step #1: Choose the Right Pen

As mentioned, the pen you’re using will heavily impact the handwriting. The features of the pens such as the nib size, the grip, length, weight, etc. affect the quality of the handwriting.

What we found is that writing with a pen that provides smoothness on paper when writing really helps. We like the pens that literally just glide on paper and thus creates no friction during those longhand writing sessions.

This feature of a pen can be found in pens that do not skip. One of the signs of a smooth pen is a consistent ink flow.

Pens that skip could scratch the surface of the paper, therefore, creating inconsistent and poor quality handwriting.

Another thing to consider when choosing the pen for handwriting is the hand size. If you have a smaller hand, try to choose the smaller pen. This will allow your hand to hold and manipulate the pen during fast writing.

The last thing that you should consider when choosing the pen to use is the dominant hand you’re using when writing. This is because the pen’s performance may depend on the hand you use in writing.

Left-handed writers, for instance, need pens that have ink that dries quickly. This is because they write from the left to the right side of the paper. So, if a left-handed person uses a pen that takes time to dry its ink, the ink will be distorted as the left-hand touches the newly written surface.

If you are a left-handed person, make sure that you pick a pen with a fast-drying ink. This will help you achieve neater handwriting.

Step #2: Hold the Pen Properly

Now that you have the right pen that writes neatly and fast, the next thing you need to focus on is the proper execution. What we mean by this is the correct handling of the pen when writing.

The perfect way to do this is by holding the pen with just a fair amount of force. This is because if you hold the pen too tight or too loosely, you won’t be able to control the pen.

The “fair amount of force” is subjective. In fact, some people could write well if they tightly hold their pens.

But we do not recommend it if you want to be able to write fast. If you tightly hold your pen, your hand and finger won’t freely move and therefore the movement is constrained.

What we suggest is to hold the pen in such a way that you can easily move your fingers when writing. This will help you write fast and neatly.

Step #3: Find the Right Angle

What we mean by this is that many people find it effective when writing on a paper at 90 degrees angle. These people produce vertical handwriting. The writing is clear and readable.

But for some people, the position of the paper matters during the handwriting process. Some people position the paper at 45 degrees angle. This paper position creates slanted handwriting.

Both writing styles work. There is no right or wrong way to write. As long as you capture or deliver important ideas, you’ll be okay.

What handwriting style should you use? Well, this depends on your preference. There is no rule with regard to this. Find the best angle that works well for you.

Step #4: Practice, Practice, and a Lot of Practice

Now that you already have found your best pen, learned to hold the pen correctly, and found the perfect paper angle, it is time to practice.

Learning how to write neatly and fast takes a lot of practice. All the types of pens and the strategies you learn from here are useless unless you put them in action.

We recommend that you learn how to write fast first. To do this, you can listen to a recorded class discussion (or any type of recording) and try to jot down the information down on the notes.

You can actually do this during a class discussion. Try to capture all your teacher is saying. Do it until your hand and finger get used to fast handwriting strokes.

Then, slowly, begin to work on the clarity of your handwriting. Try to write the letters as neatly and clear as you can.

This sounds easy. But when you put yourself in the actual process, you’ll see the challenge. Your finger and the whole hand will feel the pain as you force them to move faster.

If you do that for a thousand times, you have a better chance to develop a skill that will allow you to write neatly and fast.

Thoughts on How to Write Neatly and Fast

Learning how to write neatly and fast needs a perfect writing tool, strategy and a lot of practice. The combination of these factors will help you a lot in achieving your ultimate handwriting goal.

You have to remember though that there is no general rule as to how to write neatly and fast. That said, you may or may not find these tips helpful. That’s totally fine.

The truth is that it’s only you who can develop a writing strategy that works for you perfectly. But we hope that, through these simple tips, you’ll have an idea of how to achieve your goal.
