How To Make Kraft Mac & Cheese Better (8 Easy Tricks)
Wondering how to make Kraft Mac & Cheese better ? I have all the hot tips and tricks!
I grew up on Kraft mac and cheese, after all. So not to toot my own horn, but I’m a bit of an expert.
How to Improve Kraft Mac & Cheese
Kraft Mac & Cheese is a timeless family classic. Kids love it and parents can make it in a snap.
Sometimes, though, you want a little more oomph. So I’m letting you in on my Kraft Mac & Cheese upgrades.
With just a few simple tweaks and additions, you can elevate that box.
So get ready to take your mac and cheese experience up a notch.
You’re about to learn the best ways to make Kraft Mac & Cheese better than just store-bought.
1. Salt the Water
Have you been adding salt to your Kraft Mac & Cheese? If not, it’s time to start!
Salting pasta water is like second nature. We do it every time we make pasta without thinking twice.
But somehow, it’s often overlooked with store-bought Kraft.
I’m guessing it’s because the directions leave this step out. And yet, all other pasta dishes we make get a little pinch.
Some argue it helps speed up the cooking. Really, it’s about the flavor.
Adding salt to the cooking water seasons the pasta inside out.
That means it’s not just sprinkled on top. It’s infused into the macaroni.
This results in an overall better flavor. Just remember, a small pinch goes a long way.
2. Slightly Undercook the Pasta
Nobody likes a bowl of mushy pasta! It’s the easiest way to ruin the whole experience.
If you find your mac and cheese is constantly overcooked, try making it al dente.
I’m sure you’ve seen this phrase on pasta packaging a time or two. In Italian, al dente means “to the tooth.”
It’s a way of describing slightly undercooked pasta. Or for others, cooked to perfection!
It’s tender, chewy, and still a little firm.
For al dente, cook the macaroni a minute or two less than what the directions state.
It’s a simple way to add more texture. Plus, it helps the macaroni hold up better when you smother it with cheesy goodness.
3. Make It Extra Creamy
How do you turn store-bought mac and cheese into a decadent feast?
It’s super simple. Just add cream.
Kraft Mac & Cheese calls for a quarter cup of milk. This could be nonfat milk, 2 percent milk, whole milk, or even non-dairy milk.
But when you add cream, it changes everything. It’s like the difference between a skinny latte and a breve.
Kraft with cream has a luxurious mouthfeel and flavor.
Yet the creamy options don’t stop there. Instead of cream, you can use half-n-half, butter, Greek yogurt, or even sour cream.
Play around with the ratios and see what combination you like. Any of these are guaranteed to give that box a richer flavor.
4. Make It Cheesier
When in doubt, double up on the cheese!
I’m the sort of person that believes the cheesier the better.
If you are too, give the sauce a boost with more cheese.
You can sprinkle grated parmesan or gruyere on top for a garnish.
Or make it extra creamy by melding the pasta with cream cheese or brie.
Sharp cheddar cheese gives the pasta a nice bite. Pepper Jack also adds a little spice.
But if you want a guilt-riddled bowl of homestyle comfort food , go with Velveeta.
It maxes out the cheese factor for one sinfully delicious meal. It’s so creamy, indulgent, and cheesy that it’s irresistible!
No matter which cheese you choose, just be sure it’s a melty type.
You don’t want to bite into a hunk of semi-melted cheese.
Speaking of which, melt the cheese with the sauce on the stove before adding it to the pasta.
It’s the best way to fully incorporate it.
Likewise, you can skip the included powdered cheese packet entirely for fresh cheese.
The grating will take more work on your part. But sometimes, it’s just what the doctor ordered.
5. Brown the Butter
Brown butter is a quick Kraft Mac & Cheese fix.
You can use it just like you would regular butter. And it’s super easy.
In a pan, add the desired amount of butter and cook it on low. As it cooks, the butter will start to bubble and darken.
Be sure to swirl the pan and keep a watchful eye. You want it to brown, not burn.
Then, mix it with the sauce like you would with regular butter.
It makes the mac and cheese more complex and rich. And it’s so simple!
It only takes you a handful of minutes. So it’s not a ton of extra effort.
Not to mention, you’ll love how it tastes.
6. Add Protein
Need to make your mac and cheese more filling? Add protein.
Protein is a simple solution to make Kraft Mac & Cheese more satiating.
Savory meats like chicken, ground beef, sausage, and ham work great. I find it’s particularly good with leftover rotisserie chicken .
Although, the barbecue lover in me loves to load up on pulled pork. And don’t get me started on brisket!
For the little tykes, hot dog slices do the trick. Sometimes, nostalgia strikes and I make mine that way too.
Of course, there’s no denying the power of bacon! Fry up a few slices and chop them up.
Bits of fatty, salty pork with creamy macaroni and cheese is like heaven in a bowl.
And don’t worry seafood lovers, I didn’t forget about you. Add lobster to it for the ultimate mac and cheese.
Don’t eat meat? That’s fine too. White beans are a simple, quick, and affordable protein fix.
7. Add Spices
Hands down, spices are the easiest way to spruce up Kraft Mac & Cheese.
You don’t have to chop, cook, blend, or crush any additional ingredients. And, you don’t have to dirty any extra dishes.
Just head to the spice cabinet and get creative with it.
Cayenne adds a nice fiery kick. Curry powder gives it a warming spicy touch.
Then there’s garlic powder for the win!
I also like to reach for regional spices for a fun twist.
Taco seasoning has a ton of flavor. Creole seasoning adds a bit of pizzazz.
Start with just a pinch and season to taste. It’s the best way to avoid overdoing it.
You can also bust out your favorite bottle of hot sauce. Cholula, Louisiana, Tapatio, Crystal, or anything else you fancy.
While it might not exactly be a spice, it certainly is spicy!
8. Top It With Crushed Crackers or Breadcrumbs
Want more texture? Add crackers and breadcrumbs.
The crunchy texture pairs beautifully with the tender creamy pasta.
To max out the crispy factor, pour the cooked mac and cheese into a baking dish.
Then, sprinkle crushed crackers or breadcrumbs on top.
After a minute or two under the broiler, it develops a nice crispy coating.
You can tell it’s done when it starts to brown. Give it a minute to cool and dig in.
For crackers, Ritz has a nice buttery flavor. Club crackers do, too.
In terms of breadcrumbs, panko is my favorite. I love the texture.
If you want a little extra flavor, go with Italian breadcrumbs.
Either way, it makes a store-bought box of Kraft taste homemade.
Mac & Cheese Recipes to Try
With so many tips, where do you begin? Well, my upgraded Kraft mac and cheese recipe is super cheesy, rich, and it has the best crunch.
Plus, you just need six ingredients.
You cook the mac and cheese as usual. Then, pile it into a casserole dish and bake.
About 25 minutes later, your meal is ready.
But I have a bunch of other tasty mac and cheese recipes:
- Velveeta mac and cheese maxes out the cheesy and creamy factor by a thousand.
- From the flavor to the texture, it tastes like it came right out of grandma’s kitchen.
- If you’ve had it, you know exactly what I mean. If you haven’t, you’re truly missing out!
- For potlucks, holidays, or game days, it’s absolutely perfect.
For more mac and cheese topping inspiration , try cauliflower, corn, or jalapenos. Or go wild with crushed Cheetos.

Wondering how to make Kraft Mac and Cheese better? I’ve got four simple tricks that will make boxed mac and cheese creamy and delicious! In fact, two of them are so basic I can’t believe they’re not in the instructions on the box.
How much do I love Kraft Mac and Cheese?
I love Kraft Mac and Cheese (or Kraft Dinner, as my Canadian friends call it). I will eat it hot, cold, leftover, for breakfast, and even massively expired, apparently:
And although it will taste fine if you just follow the instructions on the blue box, I always use four simple tricks to make it so much creamier and even more delicious! Trust me, once I show you how to make box Mac and Cheese better, you won’t want to go back to the box instructions.
How to make box mac and cheese better
There are four easy things you can do to make box mac and cheese better: salt the water, cook the pasta for less time than the directions say, replace half of the butter with American cheese, and make the sauce in a separate pan.
Salt the water
My first trick is to add salt to the water before cooking the pasta. I can’t believe that Kraft doesn’t tell you to do this. Adding salt to pasta water should just be automatic, no matter what you’re making. This is your only chance to season the macaroni itself (the rest of the flavor will be on the outside of the pasta), so go ahead and put a spoonful of kosher or table salt in there.
Now, I add the salt as soon as I put the water in, because otherwise I forget, every time. But if you’re using a pot with a non-stick bottom, you may want to wait and add the salt after the water comes to a boil, because supposedly the undissolved salt sitting on the bottom of the pan as the water heats up can make marks on the non-stick surface.
This could be an old wives’ tale, I have no idea—it’s never happened to me, and I boil long pasta in this awesome pasta pot all the time . But I mention it because I don’t want to be responsible for ruining your non-stick cookware.
Don’t over-cook the pasta
My second trick is to cook the elbow macaroni a minute or two less than the package says, otherwise the pasta will be mushy. The instructions say to boil the pasta for seven or eight minutes “or until tender,” but tender is overdone, and seven or eight minutes is way too far!
Start tasting it after five minutes, and drain it as soon as it’s al dente (just a hair short of soft), because it’s going to keep cooking while it sits.
And remember, don’t ever rinse cooked pasta, unless you’re making the rare recipe that specifically calls for it (some cold pasta salads, for example).
Replace half of the butter with American Cheese
My third trick is to replace half of the butter with two or three slices of American cheese. The difference is incredible!
The instructions say to use four tablespoons of butter (or margarine, but don’t do that). We’re only going to use two, plus some American cheese.
I get my American cheese sliced really thick, so two of my slices would be equal to about three slices of packaged stuff. But hey, go ahead and throw in a fourth if you want. It will just be even creamier and cheesier!
Can you use all of the butter the instructions call for, plus the American cheese? Sure, but I actually like it better this way. It gets a little too greasy with all that butter added to the extra cheese.
Make the sauce separately
My fourth trick is to never, ever try to make the sauce while the elbow macaroni is in the pot. The macaroni gets totally beaten up during this process, and it’s almost impossible to get rid of every little bit of powder, leaving the mac and cheese gritty.
Instead, set the drained macaroni aside in a bowl (hey, you can use that bowl to serve it in, instead of the pot—fancy!), adding a tablespoon of the butter and giving it a gentle stir, so that the pasta doesn’t stick together as it sits.
Then, over low heat, stir the remaining tablespoon of butter with the quarter cup of milk, the packet of cheese powder, and the two or three slices of American cheese.
Now, if you absolutely don’t want to use another dish and just want to serve the mac and cheese in the pot, I get you. At the end of the day, one more bowl for each thing you cooked adds up. In that case, just let the pasta sit in the strainer or colander you used to drain it, and don’t add the tablespoon of butter to it (add it to the sauce, instead).
You just have to be extra careful when it’s time to add the pasta to the sauce, because it will tend to fall out of the strainer in one big clump, and that could make a big mess (I speak from experience, and yes, hot cheese sauce burns like a mofo). And you’ll have to do a bit of extra stirring to get the pasta separated again.
That’s it! Easy tips to upgrade your boxed mac and cheese from good to delicious!

And here I was thinking I was so smart for swapping butter and milk for heavy cream.
Monday 28th of February 2022
That's sounds delicious too, I've never tried that! Although I do sometimes use heavy cream for scrambled eggs, which make them taste like velvet.

I stop eating Kraft Mac & cheese bc my daughter loves it and always wanted it when she was little, I just got sick of it. It's been years now and I want to like it again. I made this and followed it to a T. Gave some to my 14 year old son and 8 year old daughter and myself. None of us were wowed. My son said he'll eat it but it's not something he will ask for. This is the first time my daughter hasn't asked for seconds of Kraft Mac and cheese. That stinks I was hoping it would improve it to the point of me wanting it often.

Sounds like it's just not a flavor you guys dig! I like to compare it to instant mashed potatoes. I would never ever mistake instant mashed for "real" mashed, the tastes and textures are TOTALLY different. And yet, sometimes, I crave instant mashed potatoes! Just like I don't think Kraft Mac & Cheese tastes anything like the "real" Mac & Cheese recipes I make, which use better cheese, more butter, etc. But sometimes I just crave that particular Kraft Mac & Cheese flavor. It's unique, but totally not for everybody.

Wow! I was raised only eating Velveeta so I always thought Kraft was gross. My grandma made it once and added shredded cheese and that was the only time I liked it. I have a 2 year old now and he loves this brand so I had a box in the cupboard and found this recipe. You nailed it. That is so good. I'm adding hamburger meat and broccoli and calling it dinner for tomorrow. Thank you!

Great recipe Amy! Worked perfectly. I added about 10-12 oz. of thick salsa at the end to spice it up! Will definitely do this again!
@Dan Masterson, I was thinking about adding diced tomatoes but I like your idea!

I also use Heavy cream instead of milk. The difference just doing that is like…. Crazy awesome

If you’ve been looking for the best way to doctor up your boxed mac and cheese, this recipe for how to make Kraft mac and cheese better is just what you need! The macaroni is creamy, cheesy, and ultra delicious!
How To Make Kraft Mac And Cheese Better
There’s so many options when it come to making the best Kraft macaroni and cheese recipe. Creamy or cheesy? Baked or made on the stove? With or without ketchup? With or without hot sauce?
I made this for my 6-year-old nephew the last time he came over. Cooper loved this recipe and said, “out of all the things you’ve made, this is for sure my favorite.”
He also said, “this mac and cheese smells different than normal, but tastes way better, and I love the new flavor.” I think it was the garlic and onion he was smelling, and I 100% agree that it levels up the flavor, because I love the addition, too!
The small extra effort to doctor up the mac and cheese sauce does make this the “best, cheesiest, tastiest mac and cheese ever!”
Compliments from kids are always my favorite, because they’re so honest. So, you can make this for your family with total confidence that everyone’s going to love it!
A quick tip: It’s so important to make the sauce in the pot on its own before you add the noodles. If you try to make the sauce while the noodles are in the pot, the sauce will get lumpy and it won’t mix together well.
Ingredients
Kraft Mac and Cheese: We’re using two boxes of Kraft mac and cheese as the base of this recipe. You could swap that for other brands that use a powder cheese for the cheese sauce if you like though.
Butter: Butter adds tons of body and flavor to the sauce. It really helps it taste extra creamy and not just cheesy.
Half and Half: Adding half and half to the macaroni does so much in amping up the creamy factor.
If you don’t have half and half, I’d recommend using whole milk. You could also use some of the pasta water if you don’t have any milk on hand.
American Cheese: Adding a few slices of American cheese makes this the ultimate cheesy mac and cheese. It adds so much flavor!
If you don’t have any American cheese, try using cream cheese instead. It will taste a little more creamy than cheesy, but it will still add tons of delicious flavor.
Spices: A little garlic powder and onion powder goes a long way in making this the best easy mac and cheese ever! Definitely don’t skimp on these.
You could also add a bit of paprika, black pepper, or even a splash of hot sauce if you want to amp up the flavor even more.
How To Make Box Mac And Cheese Better
Start by boiling the pasta according to the package instructions. Drain the pasta through a colander, and set aside. (See the recipe card below for the full printable instructions.)
Return the pot to the stove, and add in the butter. Swirl the butter until it’s melted.
Stir in the half and half. Add in the American cheese, and stir until it’s melted.
Add in the cheese packets, garlic powder, and onion powder.
Stir the sauce together until it has fully combined. Add in the cooked macaroni and gently stir until it’s evenly coated in the sauce. See the recipe card below for the full written instructions, including ingredient amounts, cooking times, and helpful tips, etc.
What Can I Add To Kraft Mac And Cheese?
There are so many things you can add to mac and cheese! My favorite add-ins to doctor up mac and cheese are:
- Shredded Rotisserie Chicken

- Browned Ground Beef
- Crumbled Sausage
- Sun-Dried Tomatoes

Those are just my favorite add-ins. If you’re talking about toppings, I also love:

This was a huge hit with dinner. An easy side with readily accessible ingredients. It amped up the cheese factor just enough to get a YUM out of the kids when they ate the first bite. I don’t make boxed mac and cheese very often, so this was an absolute treat. Thanks for sharing.
I want a box of Mac and cheese
Loved this. Learned that it really important to make sauce first and use half-n-half rather than any other dairy for the full flavor and smoothness. I also added a dollop of sour cream just because I like the tang. Thanks, I guess this old dog learned a new trick. Served on the side with baked crusted cod and roasted broccoli.
This helps so much. I ran out of cheese and wanted to make nachos… I did have some Kraft slices and boxed Mac & Cheese… so I improvised with this technique. I use heavy cream ( I’m a heathen in small doses lol). Delicious! This is a go to for sure… I never make boxed mac according to the box ( I always use about half the pasta but all the cheese and use cream) but this is an even bigger improvement.
I added cheese soup to mine easy and creamy

One-Pot Copycat Kraft Mac and Cheese
Published: Oct 22, 2022 · Modified: Apr 30, 2023 by Mollie · 8 Comments
This copycat Kraft mac and cheese is healthier and more delicious than the original. It's made in one pot and comes together in less than 20 minutes with no heavy cream, butter, or artificial ingredients. Add some protein on the side to make it a full meal, or enjoy it as a side dish. It's the perfect nostalgic comfort food.
This post and recipe was updated on October 22, 2022 to incorporate user feedback.
I grew up in the American Midwest, so it goes without saying that I ate a lot of mac and cheese growing up, usually of the Kraft or Velveeta variety, and often served with a hot dog or with some canned tuna mixed in (don't knock it 'til you've tried it). Sometimes I still go back to the blue and orange boxes at the grocery store, nostalgic for something that only makes a mess of one pot and makes me feel like a kid again. This mac and cheese tastes just as good, but without all the artificial ingredients.
You don't have to use cute animal pasta for this recipe--we tested it with normal pasta too--but it does make it a whole lot of fun, and reminded me of eating character mac and cheese out of a box. It kind of made me want to catch a Disney Channel Original Movie after dinner, too. I found some cute pasta on Amazon here .
If you're looking for other easy weeknight pasta recipes, try our sloppy joe pasta or cajun chicken pasta . If you're looking for baked mac and cheese, try our bacon cheddar baked mac and cheese .
Key Ingredients
Instructions, one-pot kraft-style mac and cheese recipe.
- Macaroni - We used animal shaped macaroni, but normal macaroni (or any other shape) should work just fine too. We haven't tested gluten-free pasta, but if you do, leave a note in the comments to let us know how it worked out.
- Milk - We used whole milk. You can use 2%, but I wouldn't try anything with less fat than that.
- Chicken broth - We cook the pasta in a combination of chicken broth and milk, which adds a lot of flavor to this recipe and forms the basis for the cheese sauce.
- Sharp cheddar cheese - Sharp cheddar is perfect for this copycat Kraft mac and cheese recipe because it has a flavor reminiscent of the orange powder that comes in those beloved blue boxes. Make sure you shred your own cheese--it melts so much better than pre-shredded and tastes better too!
- Cream cheese
- Seasonings - Salt, black pepper, mustard powder, and ground cayenne
This recipe couldn't be any easier. It's made in one pot and comes together in about 20 minutes, including prep work (which just involves shredding the cheese!).
Step 1 : Add the chicken broth, part of the milk, and pasta to a pot over medium heat. Cook until the pasta is al dente, around 10-15 minutes depending on your pasta. Stir every couple of minutes to prevent the pasta from sticking or the liquid from boiling over.
Step 2 : As the pasta cooks, the liquid should reduce in volume and thicken. This will form the basis for your sauce. Once the pasta is fully cooked, turn the heat to low and stir in the shredded cheese, cream cheese, additional milk, and spices. Once the cheese has melted, remove the pot from the heat.
The sauce should be about the same consistency as Kraft Mac and Cheese. If it's too thick, you can add more milk until it reaches your desired consistency. If it's too thin, allow it to sit for a few minutes--it thickens as it cools.
Prevent your screen from going dark!
Ingredients
16 ounces 16 elbow macaroni
2 cups 2 chicken broth
3 cups 3 whole milk, divided
12 ounces 12 sharp cheddar cheese, shredded (see note)
3 ounces 3 cream cheese
¾ teaspoons ¾ salt
1 teaspoon 1 black pepper
½ teaspoon ½ mustard powder
Dash Dash ground cayenne, to taste
- Add the chicken broth, 2 cups of the milk, and pasta to a pot over medium heat. Cook until pasta is al dente, around 10-15 minutes depending on your pasta. Stir every couple of minutes to prevent the pasta from sticking or the liquid from boiling over.
- As the pasta cooks, the liquid should reduce in volume and thicken. This will form the basis for your sauce. Once the pasta is fully cooked, turn the heat to low and stir in the shredded cheese, cream cheese, remaining cup of milk, and spices.
- Once the cheese has melted, remove the pot from the heat. The sauce consistency can vary based on your pasta shape and stove temperature. If it's too thick for your preference, you can add more milk until it reaches your desired consistency. If it's too thin, allow it to sit for a few minutes-it thickens as it cools.
- We recommend you shred your own cheese-it melts so much better than pre-shredded and tastes better too!

I feel like I missed something. I received some pasta noodles that are identical to the ones in the Kraft box so I thought I would look up a copycat recipe for them. This was in no way like the orangy cheesy boxed mac-n-cheese. I can see where it would be good for some, it was creamy and loaded with sauce, however I have to state again, nothing like the box. It is quite possible I missed something in the making of this but I followed the recipe word for word. The sauce had a slightly powdery texture and there was very little cheese taste. I don't want to rate this because so many people loved it so I don't want to be "that person." I would like to know if anyone else had the same experience as me.

Hi! Sorry you had that experience! We tried to make this similar to the boxed stuff without using any processed cheese--a "healthier" (or at least less fake) version, if you will. It's not an exact match, but we did try to mimic the texture and the easiness of the boxed stuff.

Don't get me wrong, classic mac n' cheese is always great, but it's only natural to want to mix things up now and again. Maybe you have a hot date you want to impress, or you want to show your mom that mac n' cheese CAN be dinner. Whatever the reason, here are five different ways to mix up your Kraft mac & cheese like you've never tried before.
Start with following the box instructions and cook your pasta to completion.
Is it a coincidence that great things come from little blue boxes? Then you'll end up with this glorious pot of mac and cheese. After you have your final product is when the real fun comes in.
Here's where things get interesting.
1. Bacon Mac & Cheese
The amount of diced bacon bits you put in is all preference. Personally, the more bacon the better. Put your mac & cheese in an oven safe dish. Then sprinkle a thin layer of bread crumbs on the top of the macaroni. Place the dish in the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for five minutes.
2. Spicy Garlic Mac & Cheese
For many of these recipes, amounts of ingredients should be determined by preference. Spicy garlic mac & cheese is pretty simple. All you need is to mix a dash of garlic salt and a generous sprinkle of crushed red pepper flakes.
3. Pesto Mac & Cheese
Add a dollop of fresh basil pesto in about a cup of mac and cheese and you're good to go. If you're feeling fancy AF add fresh basil leaves to your bowl.
4. Pepper Mac & Cheese
This one is for all the plain jane's out there. Scatter some crushed black pepper into your bowl then add some grated cheese.
5. Frank's (RedHot sauce) Mac & Cheese
This is my personal favorite. I add A LOT of this delicious Frank's RedHot hot sauce to my bowl of macaroni. If you can't handle the heat, just add a dash of hot sauce and you'll get the idea.

Instant Pot Easy Mac is EVEN easier thanks to the Instant Pot. That’s right. That blue box is going to change lunch time with this no drain, super easy mac and cheese that tastes like Kraft Easy Mac.
INSTANT POT MAC AND CHEESE
Now, I love homemade mac and cheese with no less than 4-5 quality cheeses and a fun, artisan noodle shape to eat. I top mine with extra sharp cheddar cheese and butter tossed panko breadcrumbs.
But if I made that for my family, Brett and the kids would not eat it. When we go out and order mac and cheese, my son literally always asks for “normal mac and cheese” if it’s not Kraft. How did we get here, son?!
My favorite boxed mac and cheese is Annie’s White Shells, but no one here will eat those either. So I’ve just grown accustomed to throwing that Costco-sized box of Kraft into my cart every other month with no shame. It took awhile for me to get over it, but I pick my battles — and I don’t think it tastes bad, either.
To save time, I make our Kraft mac and cheese in our Instant Pot ! I’ve found that making Instant Pot Kraft mac and cheese turns out the same as Kraft Easy Mac. It’s easy, it’s delicious, and my kids love it.
KRAFT MAC AND CHEESE > INSTANT POT EASY MAC
This Instant Pot Kraft dinner is one of my family’s favorites. It tastes like EASY MAC — the single-serve microwave cups — not like conventional stovetop mac and cheese. That’s because Easy Mac is made with the same concept as pressure cooking: The noodles and water start together cold, and they get microwaved until the noodles simply absorb the water.
No straining or boiling on the stove. That’s why I titled this recipe Instant Pot EASY MAC, since that’s what it tastes like.

COOKING PASTA IN AN INSTANT POT
Pasta is one of those things that can be quite controversial within the Instant Pot community — personally, I tend to prefer to cook it conventionally. However, with the Kraft mac and cheese, it works. Let me explain.
I sound like a broken record when I say this, but the Instant Pot is a shortcut . Just like the microwave, it cooks things in a fraction of the time a traditional method would take, but some things may turn out slightly different.
Have you ever made a “ baked potato ” in the microwave or Instant Pot? Sure, it gets cooked and it gets the job done — and it’s quite good.
BUT, it’s not going to be 100% the same as slathering it in olive oil with a nice coating of coarse salt and baking for an hour to get nice and fluffy inside while it gets crispy and flaky on the outside. It’s still delicious, but it’s just not quite the same.
(You can make my Instant Pot Salt Potatoes and then air fry them for a pretty dang good similar dish, though!)
Starchy noodles and pasta water
The same concept applies with pasta. The cooking chemistry is completely different for boiling a pot of noodles vs. pressure cooking a pot of noodles.
Therefore, the taste and texture is simply going to be different.
When you make noodles (or, in this case, Kraft mac and cheese with the included little elbow macaroni) in an Instant Pot, those noodles are going to retain more starch than they would have if you’d boiled them.A little starch is ok.
In fact, when I make my pasta sauces, I save a little of the starchy pasta water to add to the sauce. It’s a trick chefs use to thicken their sauces.
When you’re making boxed mac and cheese in the Instant Pot, then, that starch actually just helps to make things creamier.
NO-DRAIN PASTA RECIPE
I tested this recipe so many ways to ensure this was a one pot, NO-DRAIN recipe. Thus, I’m confident in this no-drain pasta-to-water ratio.
There are plenty of recipes out there that require you to drain the water after pressure cooking, but that idea really didn’t appeal to me. If I was going to make Kraft mac and cheese in an Instant Pot, I wanted it to be extra easy.
I think this is a good method for anyone using their Instant Pot in close quarters. Also, anyone who might be elderly or weak (from back surgery or pregnancy, for example) and can’t lift a pot of boiling water to drain in a colander would love this approach.
HOW TO MAKE INSTANT POT EASY MAC
Making Kraft mac and cheese in an Instant Pot is beautifully simple, but you won’t be completely following the Kraft mac and cheese instructions on the box.
Instead, combine the water and noodles straight into the Instant Pot, then cook on manual high pressure for 3 minutes with a 3-4 minute natural pressure release — not a quick release.
Open the lid, and give the noodles a stir. You’ll need to break up the noodles a tad and let them absorb the remaining water for a minute or two.
Add the called-for amounts of milk and butter, and you’re done!
I actually recommend using heavy cream or half and half in place of the milk for an even creamier Kraft mac and cheese made in the pressure cooker!
TIPS FOR THE BEST INSTANT POT MAC AND CHEESE
Instant Pot mac and cheese is pretty simple, but there are always kinks and questions to work through. Below, I’ve included some of the questions and concerns that I encounter most frequently, as well as some simple hacks!
DOUBLING INSTANT POT EASY MAC
Some of my readers have doubled this recipe, but I do not recommend adding more than 2 boxes. This recipe has been tested for one box of macaroni and cheese, therefore I cannot guarantee similar results for a double batch.
If you choose to double this recipe, multiply all ingredients, but keep the cook time the same! You can certainly fit two boxes of Kraft mac and cheese in the Instant Pot, if you’re using a conventional 6-quart one.
I have had good results doing this, but some readers have reported some issues. I suggest adding the noodles, stirring them so they don’t clump, and cooking them right away.
Another way to avoid issues is by preheating your Instant Pot so it’s warm before you start adding water.
HOW DO YOU REHEAT MAC AND CHEESE IN THE INSTANT POT?
If you need to reheat mac and cheese in the Instant Pot, I suggest doing so on the Saute setting.
Press the Saute button and adjust the temperature to low. I would also add a couple tablespoons of milk or cream to the pot to help rehydrate the leftovers. The warm cream will help mix into the cold noodles.
Add the mac and cheese, then stir until warmed through.
CAN I ADD ALL THE INGREDIENTS TO THE INSTANT POT AT ONCE?
I do not recommend adding all of the ingredients to the pot at once; it’s better to cook the pasta first and stir in the sauce at the end!
If you add everything at the beginning, the sauce would be diluted — and the dairy would curdle and burn.
Instant Pot Easy Mac
Ingredients.
- 1 1/2 cups water
- 1 box Kraft macaroni and cheese 1 cup of noodles
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1/4 cup milk
INSTRUCTIONS
- In the Instant Pot, combine noodles with water. Lock the lid to sealing, and cook on Manual High Pressure for 3 minutes. Allow a 3-4 minute natural pressure release (3 minutes for more bite; 4 for softer noodles).
- Release the rest of the pressure, then open the lid. Stir the noodles and break them up to absorb any additional water. Keep stirring for a minute or two until all the noodles are broken up and the noodles are cooked to your liking.
- You should not have to drain any additional liquid. If you do see more liquid, it should be very little. Set the Instant Pot on Low Saute and let the water evaporate out if needed.
- Add the cheese sauce packet, butter, and milk. Stir and serve!

- Due to inconsistent results, I do not recommend tripling this recipe. I have doubled this recipe with good results, but some readers have had trouble getting consistent results so please use your best judgment. I recommend doing two batches instead of doubling the recipe if you are worried about this.
- Try adding a splash of heavy cream or replace all the milk with half and half.

Thanks for this. I have made regular mac in the IP but I did not know how to make KD and I have some I need to use up.
Have you tried putting all the ingredients in the pot before cooking instead of adding the butter and milk afterward?
I have not. The sauce would be diluted. let me know if you try it! I also don’t pressure cook with dairy because it curdles and burns
I have added everything at the beginning if I am using a tomato sauce, but won’t if I’m using dairy…..
Although I am relatively new to my Instant Pot, I am intrigued to try doing Kraft’s Mac & Cheese and if and when I do, I am going to try what MamaDi suggested and all the ingredients aright from the beginning since that sounded like an intriguing idea to me.
So when I do, which should be in the very near future, I will let you know how it all turns out!
Please let me know how it turns out!
Can this be made in the smaller 3qt? Add same amount of water?
Yes! Same everything! I do it in my 3 quart all the time
Hi Becky, Press the Pressure Cook button on your Instant Pot Nova Plus and then just adjust the time as needed!
I think I’ll stick to the traditional cooking of mac and cheese as this really only saved about 5 minutes (it took 12 minutes to come up to pressure) and wasn’t eddible.
Hello Lisa! I’m a total Instant Pot newbie and I found this recipe from your YouTube “26 Tips” video (which was very helpful). I decided this recipe would be a great entry point with my brand new Duo, thinking failure meant I’d only be wasting a cheap box dinner.
I was making two boxes so I doubled the water to 3 cups, as suggested. I set the Duo correctly to 3 minutes using Pressure Cook, and once the cooking finished I allowed 4 minutes of Natural Release.
When I went to release the rest of the pressure a ton of water gushed out the top. I was finally able to open the lid safely and the noodles had turned into a gluey, mushy brick.
I’m not quite sure what I did wrong. I’m fairly certain I followed all directions correctly. I would love and appreciate your insight on this.
Hi, Brian! I’m sorry to hear it didn’t work for you! There shouldn’t have been too much water that came out with the quick release. The Instant Pot (for a reason I don’t know), may have taken extra long to come to pressure, overcooking the noodles. Have you done the water test with your Instant Pot yet?
I am so sorry you have to deal with me San people! I think what you do and produce is great! Keep up the good work. It’s because of you that I tried an instapot. 😊💕
Haha. Your mistake was letting your kids taste Kraft mac and cheese. It’s the yellow powder that’s addictive. I know because I have struggled with that addiction for decades myself. I have switched out the pasta for tastier and sturdier types, but I really needed that yellow stuff.
You can actually buy other powdered cheese to see if the kids like it. I’ve tried Kraft powdered cheese, which of course is just what is in the blue box. Try it on rice… But there are others.
Alas, I have to stay away from it now that I know I’m allergic to dairy. It’s hard. So I am always on the search for a vegan (non-dairy) equivalent. Problem is they try to make it too healthy. I need junky vegan food, please. Ben & Jerry managed to make junky nondairy ice cream and Go Max Go make a whole line of junky vegan candy bars (I like Jokerz and Major, an homage to respectively Snickers and Heath bars). So hope springs eternal.
Wow! Easy AND great!
So I just scrolled down to the bottom to leave this comment to thank you for wasting our time.

10 Ways to Make Kraft Mac and Cheese Taste Better
Hey there, fellow mac and cheese enthusiasts!
Are you tired of the same old, bland taste of Kraft mac and cheese? Well, fret no more, because I’ve got some exciting news for you.
I’m about to share with you 10 mouthwatering ways to take your Kraft mac and cheese to a whole new level of deliciousness. Get ready to unleash your culinary creativity and make every bite a flavor explosion.
Trust me, you won’t want to miss out on these irresistible hacks. Let’s dive in and transform your mac and cheese game!
Adding Extra Cheese
You can make your Kraft mac and cheese taste even better by adding extra cheese to it. Trust me, it’s a game-changer.
Once your mac and cheese is cooked and ready, simply sprinkle some shredded cheddar or mozzarella on top. Let it melt and mix it in, creating a gooey and cheesy delight.
The added cheese elevates the flavor, giving it a rich and creamy texture that is irresistible. It takes just a few extra seconds, but the taste is worth it.
The extra cheese adds a depth of flavor and makes every bite more satisfying. So next time you whip up a bowl of Kraft mac and cheese , don’t forget to sprinkle on some extra cheese for an even more decadent experience.
Incorporating Bacon Bits
To enhance the flavor, try incorporating bacon bits into your mac and cheese. Trust me, it’s a game-changer.
The smoky, savory taste of bacon adds a whole new dimension to the classic dish. Simply cook some bacon until it’s crispy, then crumble it into small bits. Sprinkle these delicious morsels over your mac and cheese, and prepare to be amazed.
As you take your first bite, the crispy bacon bits will blend with the creamy cheese sauce , creating a heavenly combination of flavors and textures. The saltiness of the bacon perfectly complements the richness of the cheese, making every mouthful a delightful experience.
So go ahead, give it a try. Bacon bits will take your mac and cheese to a whole new level of deliciousness.
Experimenting With Different Types of Pasta
When experimenting with different types of pasta , don’t be afraid to get creative and try new flavors and textures.
One of my favorite ways to elevate the classic mac and cheese is by using different types of pasta shapes. Instead of the traditional elbow macaroni , I like to use cavatappi or penne for a fun twist. These shapes provide a different mouthfeel and allow the cheese sauce to cling to every nook and cranny.
Another option is to mix in some whole wheat or gluten-free pasta for a healthier alternative. The added nuttiness and chewiness of whole wheat pasta can add depth to the dish.
Spicing It up With Hot Sauce
Adding a dash of hot sauce can give your mac and cheese a fiery kick that takes it to a whole new level of flavor. I absolutely love the combination of creamy, cheesy mac and cheese with a hint of heat. It adds an extra dimension to the dish that is irresistible.
The hot sauce not only enhances the overall taste, but it also brings out the flavors of the cheese and pasta. The spiciness cuts through the richness and adds a nice balance. I usually go for a medium-hot hot sauce, but you can adjust the heat level according to your preference.
So next time you’re making mac and cheese, don’t forget to grab that bottle of hot sauce and give it a try. You won’t be disappointed!
Mixing in Sautéed Veggies
Don’t forget, sautéed veggies are a great way to add some extra nutrients and flavor to your mac and cheese.
I love making my mac and cheese more wholesome by tossing in some sautéed vegetables . It’s super easy and adds a nice crunch and burst of freshness to the dish.
I start by heating up some olive oil in a pan and sautéing a mix of colorful veggies like bell peppers , onions, and zucchini. Once they’re cooked to perfection, I simply mix them into my mac and cheese.
The result is a delicious combination of creamy and cheesy pasta with the added goodness of vegetables . It’s a simple way to upgrade your mac and cheese and make it a bit healthier too.
Topping It off With Bread Crumbs
To give your mac and cheese an irresistible crispy texture, sprinkle some breadcrumbs on top before baking it in the oven. Trust me, it takes this classic dish to a whole new level.
I love the combination of the creamy mac and cheese with the crunchy breadcrumbs. It adds a delightful contrast in every bite.
All you need to do is cook your mac and cheese as usual, then transfer it to a baking dish. Sprinkle a generous amount of breadcrumbs over the top, making sure to cover the entire surface.
Pop it in the oven and let it bake until the breadcrumbs turn golden brown and crispy. The result is a mac and cheese that is not only cheesy and comforting but also has that extra crunch that will leave everyone asking for seconds.
Trying Different Cheese Varieties
Have you ever considered trying different cheese varieties to elevate the flavor of your mac and cheese?
I recently discovered that experimenting with different types of cheese can take this classic dish to a whole new level. Instead of relying solely on the powdered cheese packet that comes with the macaroni, I decided to get creative.
I added a combination of sharp cheddar and creamy Gruyere to my mac and cheese, and the result was absolutely delicious. The sharpness of the cheddar added a tangy kick, while the Gruyere brought a rich and nutty flavor. It was a simple switch, but it made a world of difference.
Adding a Creamy Twist With Sour Cream
If you’re looking to add a creamy twist to your mac and cheese, you might want to consider incorporating sour cream into the recipe.
Sour cream is a delicious and tangy addition that can take your mac and cheese to the next level.
When I make mac and cheese, I love adding a dollop of sour cream to the sauce. It adds a velvety smoothness and a subtle tang that complements the cheesy goodness perfectly.
Just mix in the sour cream when you’re combining the cheese sauce and noodles , and let it melt into the mixture.
The result is a rich and creamy mac and cheese that will have you coming back for seconds.
Trust me, once you try this creamy twist, you’ll never want to go back to plain mac and cheese again.
Infusing Flavors With Herbs and Spices
After exploring how adding sour cream can give a creamy twist to Kraft mac and cheese, let’s dive into another way to elevate its flavor: infusing it with herbs and spices .
Personally, I love experimenting with different seasonings to make my mac and cheese more exciting. One of my go-to combinations is adding a pinch of garlic powder and a sprinkle of paprika. The garlic powder gives it a subtle kick of flavor, while the paprika adds a hint of smokiness. If I’m feeling adventurous, I might even throw in some dried herbs like thyme or oregano for an earthy touch.
These simple additions can transform a basic bowl of mac and cheese into a flavorful and aromatic dish that will leave your taste buds wanting more.
Adding Protein With Grilled Chicken
To add some protein to your mac and cheese, try grilling some chicken and tossing it in for a delicious and satisfying twist.
I love having mac and cheese as a quick and easy meal, but sometimes I crave a little more substance. That’s when I discovered the magic of adding grilled chicken to the mix.
The smoky flavor and tender texture of the chicken complement the creamy mac and cheese perfectly. It adds a whole new dimension to the dish and makes it more filling.
To do this, simply grill some chicken breasts or thighs until they are cooked through and juicy. Then, chop them into bite-sized pieces and mix them into your mac and cheese. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed with the result.
So there you have it, 10 simple ways to take your Kraft mac and cheese to the next level.
From adding extra cheese and bacon bits to trying different pasta shapes and incorporating sautéed veggies, the possibilities are endless.
Why settle for plain mac and cheese when you can easily transform it into a flavorful and satisfying meal?
So go ahead, get creative in the kitchen and impress your taste buds.
Who knew a box of mac and cheese could be so versatile?

Healthier Kraft Mac and Cheese
September 6, 2021 28 comments.
Healthier Kraft mac and cheese is possible. I am not sure if it is advisable but you can do it.
I wrote a post about this years ago and I decided to update it because it seems to be popular. Why? I think it is because we are all looking for comfort and the bright orange and blue box for $1 is an easy source.
Since I created this recipe, Kraft has dropped artificial dyes (which is nice) but this stuff retains that bright orange color. There was a whole grain version as well, but I couldn’t find it at my store.
I did a review of macaroni and cheese boxes to see if I could find a healthier version. I didn’t like any of them. My son likes Annies as he says it tastes better than Kraft.
The only cooking skill Kraft Mac and Cheese requires to make it is boiling water. My teenage son and daughter (if I buy it) will make this every day for lunch.
I am not a fan for a couple of reasons. First - this:
Dehydrated cheese in a packet! Does this seem like real food to you? I think this belongs on the space station. Give me a real slice of cheese over this any day of the week.
Second - this:
Isn’t that interesting? If you look closely, the 260 calories is per 2.5 ounces and it is when it is “unprepared”. Who sucks down the cheese packet and crunches on the uncooked macaroni?
When you prepare it - which is 1/3 of the box (who eats 1/3 of the box?):
360 calories, 12 g fat, 4.5 g saturated fat, 49 g carbohydrates, 9 g sugar, 10 g protein, 2 g fiber, 710 mg sodium, 12 Green, 12 Blue, 12 Purple WW SmartPts
When I saw this I thought, “Hey, I can do better than that!”. I can’t reduce the sodium by much but I can figure out how to add less fat.
I decided to nix the butter or margarine (90 calories per tablespoon) and go with 1/2 cup of 2% milk fat cottage cheese. There are a bunch of choices when it comes to cottage cheese - 4%, 2%, 1% and "no fat" cottage cheese can be found in the dairy aisle.
It should taste like the original version so I went with 2%. Finally, I added 1/2 pound of fresh tomatoes for color and to bulk up the dish. Tomatoes are a good complement to the salty dried cheese.
Now, you cut the fat, added a fruit, and have MORE to eat per serving. Are you going to like this? Yes. Is it the healthiest recipe in the world? No.
Have you made healthier Kraft Mac and Cheese? What did you add?

Sigh, I tend to think those "MADE WITH WHOLE GRAIN" claims are marketing whooey -- and I'm in the PR industry! Do you have any tips for figuring out which "whole grain" products are actually worth it, and which are mostly hype?
Stephanie G
The cottage cheese replaces the butter AND the milk? Interesting idea. If it smooths out/melts that works. Just hope removing the fat doesn't completely make it lose any staying power (not like the original had much, but I'd have been adding to it somehow I think). There's already a lot of carbs and feeling hungry after an hour kind of ruins the point of making something lower calorie. I've always added tuna and peas, and I'm now contemplating how to work a little (good) olive oil in there. hmm.
What are the calories and points in the original version per serving? Thanks
Sounds really good,I'm with the others on the "whole grain" claim. I also usually add a most(tuna, chicken and a veggie to mine. Salsa and tuna are yummy together too). My biggest question is the texture issue of cottage cheese...does it melt?
The cottage cheese does melt - there are some curds left (see photo) but you don't notice them. It is less runny than the original version. When dealing with whole grain - you need to look at the grams of fiber per serving - and if it is above 4 g - you are getting the benefit of whole grain. Otherwise, it is just marketing. The original is 390 calories and I will look up the PP value and get back to you.
If you must eat mac 'n cheese from a box, Annie's is a good option. They have a whole wheat with white cheddar variety. I agree with the commenter above, and you can't always trust the 'whole grain' label. Annie's has real ingredients that you can read and understand.
Cristina @ An Organic Wife
Way better eating it your way than with the powederd stuff. Someone toldme once that the blue box goes right to your thighs and ever since then I haven't had it! :)
Jennifer @ Peanut Butter and Peppers
Thanks for posting this. My niece starts college in the fall and I'm making a recipe book for her. I really wanted to add a healthy mac and cheese recipe, but I know she won't go for it. I think this is a great option for her.
We eat a lot of Annie's mac & cheese, and we always add peas. I think my 3.5 year old son thinks that mac & cheese equals Annies with peas... he won't even eat orange colored ones when offered them at other peoples' houses. In college I always made Annies with peas and tuna... it's a pretty decent meal!
The 'made with whole grains' is hype. the way to tell is by checking the ingredient list to see if the first ingredient is whole wheat. SG - thanks for the tip on cottage cheese, I am going to try that tonight!
Thanks :). I havnt read the lable on this box, but I was thinking what the commenter above said-that if the 1st ingrediant isnt whole grain then you arnt getting whole grain, they can add fiber back with more additives. Either way its still a great option for a quick and cheep meal. Thanks for the tip Snack Girl!
When I was younger and not so health conscious, I would add sliced up hot dogs to my Kraft mac n cheese. The thought absolutely disgusts me now! I usually buy Annie's in the purple box. My DD is a picky eater but will eat any mac n cheese, so I figure Annie's is the best. On the evenings when mac n cheese is also my dinner (because I'm too tired/lazy to cook something for myself) I will add veggies to my bowl, usually peas. My DD wants nothing to do with peas and asks that I remove the foul green orbs from her bowl (ok, she doesn't use those exact words, it's more or less just "ick")
My favorite mac and cheese trick is pureed butternut squash or pumpkin. Makes it more creamy (and orange), and as long as you err on the side of caution, undetectable.
The whole grain thing IS hype... Bran cereals have LESS whole grain than ones that have "whole grain" claims up the wazoo because they have more fiber ingredients like bran. I'd much rather have 13 grams of "whole grain" in a cereal with 10 grams of fiber than a cereal that's almost 100% "whole grain" with very little fiber. "Whole grain" does not equal fiber necessarily--think about brown rice which adds a gram of fiber or 2 to the white rice. Not that it's not significant--there are nutrients in the outer layer. But this whole "whole grains" thing that includes pepperidge farm goldfish is so hokey.
Hi-A girl at the checkout gave me this addition. It's great-Just add a can of Rotel to Mac N Cheese.
Karen Miller
There's also the blue box with CAULIFLOWER added to the noodles. I've tried them and those are pretty good, too. When i was in college one of our staple recipes in an apartment of 4 girls was a box of mac n cheese + a can or two of tuna + a can of green peas. It's awesome and requires no chopping, one pan, and only 1 bowl to eat it! I love the idea of adding tomatoes. Blue box mac n' cheese is still a staple at my house because of my DH - he loves the stuff. Cracks me up! He's a kid at heart. I make it healthier by stirring in the powder right after I drain the pasta to evenly coat the noodles, then add a smidge of butter and a splash of milk and stir until it gets creamy. You need about 1/4th of what it calls for to make it work. Then I just add more milk later if i reheat it to add back in liquid. Much healthier than the box recommends. Still not great, but better. I love the idea of cottage cheese. I might even try greek yogurt!? Hmmmmm....
love the idea of using cottage cheese instead of butter/milk and adding in chopped tomatoes. I think I'll give the cottage cheese a whir in the blender so it's nice a smooth! Thanks for a great quick and easy idea.
Martha@ Simple-Nourished Living
I usually use plain 0% greek yogurt when I make boxed mac and cheese to replace the fat and most of the milk. It works perfectly, tastes creamy and delicious, and ups the protein content! All you need is about 2 heaping tablespoons.
Amazing! I just made this and it tasted 99% the same as the original prep.
For years I made it by HALVING the amount of butter (stopped using margarine decades ago) and DOUBLING (or more) the amount of milk (skim). Still healthier. But now I'm experimenting with yogurt; the tangy taste works well with the tang of "cheddar-ish powder." I'll still try a bit of butter ) one teaspoon) or a bit of extra virgin olive oil (not quite as good; and don't use regular; the flavor is too strong). I've found that if you slowly warm the yogurt up first you'll get less problems with it melting quickly and evenly. After doing some (very) rough math using the nutrition info panels on all the ingredients, the yogurt version is BY FAR healthier and lower calorie; not so much by what it adds, but for the "less-than-good-for-you-stuff" it leaves out. WARNING: This is STILL NOT health food :) Also, if you are looking to add some good fiber to any white pasta (which is WAY cheaper than whole grain pasta), try mixing in some cooked lentils into your cooked pasta. Simmering the lentils in chicken or vegetable broth (with no draining) and you might be surprised. It works exceptionally well with more rustic Italian red sauces. Not so much with plain mac n cheese, but if you're doing another variation using salsa/tomatoes, lentils are okay.

Table of Contents
How to Make Kraft Easy Mac Macaroni?
Making Kraft Easy Mac is a quick and easy meal you can make in minutes. All you need is your mac and cheese cup, water, and a microwave. Here’s how to do it:
- Open the film cover of your mac and cheese cup.
- Find the fill line printed on the inside of the cup and pour water until it hits the fill line. Give it a stir to make sure everything is evenly distributed.
- Place your cup in the microwave and cook for 3 and a half minutes.
- Once your macaroni is done cooking, remove it carefully from the microwave. Add the powdered cheese packet and mix everything together.
- Enjoy your delicious Kraft Easy Mac!
Adding milk to your mac n cheese is an easy way to kick it up a notch. By adding milk, you make the cheese sauce creamy and smooth. Adding butter also helps give extra flavor and creaminess as well, so use whichever suits your preference! If you want a healthier option, you can always opt for milk substitutes like almond milk or butter alternatives like olive oil instead.
Make It Cheesier
You can never go wrong with adding more cheese! Kraft Mac and Cheese cups are already cheesy, but you can always add more for an extra boost. To make it even better, switch up the type of cheese you use. If you already have cheddar on hand, try adding some Parmesan cheese or Monterey Jack for a different flavor.
Add Breadcrumbs
Breadcrumbs provide an extra crunchy texture to your microwave macaroni and cheese cups. You could use actual bread, saltines, or even those soup crackers you steal from the dining hall. Simply sprinkle as many crumbs as your carb-loving heart desires on top after you finish making your macaroni.
Spice It Up
Spices will give your easy mac and cheese a richer flavor and make it all the tastier. I recommend using garlic powder, paprika, cayenne pepper , or even cinnamon. A pinch of any of these spices will instantly upgrade your mac and cheese cups.
Add Hot Sauce
Hot sauce is a great way to give your Kraft Mac and Cheese cups an extra punch of flavor. Whether you prefer a classic like Tabasco or Cholula or want to get creative with something like sriracha or Chipotle pepper sauce, adding a few dashes of your favorite hot sauce will give your kraft mac the extra flavor it needs.
Add Veggies
It’s extra ingredients like vegetables that really add dimension to your Kraft Mac and Cheese. To make it healthier, try adding broccoli or peas to the mac and cheese cups. You can also add finely chopped onion, carrots, or peppers for a unique flavor. Not only do these vegetables improve the taste, but they also add a nutritional boost to your meal!
Like vegetables, adding meat to your Kraft Mac and Cheese Cups will make them much more flavorful. Think about adding some cooked diced chicken, ground beef, crumbled sausage, or bacon bits — it’ll add a delicious and savory element to your mac and cheese.
Jalapeño Popper Mac
Turn your easy mac into a well-rounded dish with this jalapeño popper mac hack! To make this recipe, add a few pickled jalapeño slices to your mac and cheese cups, along with some cream cheese for extra creaminess and crunchy croutons for texture. Yum!
You might not think curry and mac and cheese go together, but this variation is sure to surprise you! For a truly delicious mac and cheese cup, try substituting coconut milk for the water in the Kraft mac and cheese cups. Then, stir in a teaspoon of curry powder to give it an unexpected flavor punch.
Chicken Ranch Mac
Another great variation is a delicious chicken ranch mac! Stir in some ranch dressing and cooked chicken to your Kraft Mac and Cheese Cups for an easy and tasty upgrade. The ranch dressing will add a nice tangy flavor to the mac, while the chicken gives it some added protein and substance.
How to Make Kraft Mac and Cheese Cups Taste Better – FAQs
What are the white flakes in Kraft Mac and Cheese cups?
There’s no need to fear the white powder found in your Kraft Mac and Cheese cups as it’s only modified food starch. This is used as a thickening agent for the water as it cooks in the microwave. It also keeps the water from boiling and making a big mess!
Can you use milk instead of water for Kraft Mac and Cheese cups?
Of course! It’s actually encouraged, as it’ll give you that creamy texture of macaroni pasta without having to make it all yourself.
How do you use Kraft Mac and Cheese cups without a microwave?
If you’d rather not use a microwave to make your delicious quick mac, you can easily just transfer them to a bowl and pour boiling water over the noodles. Then just let it sit for 8-10 minutes until the macaroni is cooked. Add your cheese powder, and stir!
Bland Kraft Mac? We Got Your Back

How To Make The ULTIMATE Mac 'N' Cheese
Posted: July 28, 2023 | Last updated: July 28, 2023
Cheesy does it
A bit about mac 'n' cheese
Also known as macaroni cheese, macaroni pie and cheesy pasta, it may surprise you to know mac 'n' cheese has been a favorite comfort food for around 800 years. While it's Italian in origin, versions featured in the English cookbook, Forme of Curry , date as far back as the 14th century. Recipes continued to appear in 18th- and 19th-century cookbooks. The Victorian writer Mrs Beeton advocated "tender but perfectly firm" pasta and it’s still cooked al dente today. In the US, third president Thomas Jefferson is credited with introducing the dish to the States.

For an even more indulgent dish, incorporate ham, lardons, bacon or pancetta into the mix. If you’re feeling really decadent, grate truffle over the top or add luxurious seafood, like lobster tails, crayfish or crab.

Another option is to combine cauliflower cheese with mac 'n' cheese to make cauliflower mac 'n' cheese. You could also incorporate peas, potatoes, carrot or broccoli.

There’s no need to give up this dish if you’re vegan or lactose intolerant. This vegan recipe uses nutritional yeast to create a cheesy tang. While pickled cabbage seems an unusual ingredient to add, it adds a subtle lactic quality to this version.

But recently there have been a few hacks popping up that seem to not only make prepping mac and cheese look easier, but also make the final dish even more delicious.
Drain the macaroni and put into a bowl with 1 tablespoon of the salted butter, stirring gently to incorporate the butter; set aside while you make the sauce. Return the empty pot to low heat and stir together the remaining tablespoon of butter, the milk, the American cheese, and the cheese powder from the box.
Instead of using milk in your cheese sauce, use half and half or heavy cream and triple the amount the instructions call for. 1. Bacon Mac & Cheese Olivia Buckley The amount of diced bacon bits you put in is all preference. Personally, the more bacon the better. Put your mac & cheese in an oven safe dish. Then sprinkle a thin layer of bread crumbs on the top of the macaroni. Place the dish in the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for five minutes. 2.
2. Add Eggs. Eggs can be a great addition to boxed mac and cheese. Crack two eggs into a bowl and stir the cheese mixture that comes in the mac and cheese box into them along with a little bit of milk. Once it's completely combined pour it over the al dente pasta and it can be a little carbonara.
Cook pasta to al dente. Drain. Set aside. Heat cream in same pasta pot over medium low heat. Remove plastic wrap from cheese and add to pot. Stir. Add remaining cheese and stir until melted. Taste for desired cheesiness. If not cheesy enough, add another slice or two of American cheese.
