How Much Do Professional SEO Services and Web Content Writing Cost?

Judging by the popularity of our blog post about how much social media marketing costs, people are very interested in how much agencies and freelancers charge to manage social media.

In fact, that post is currently ranking #1 in Google's search engine results pages (SERPs) for a variety of keywords associated with that phrase.

So we decided to write a post about how much professional web content writing costs.

This pricing guide has been updated for 2018, and will tell you how much it costs to outsource landing pages, blog posts, press releases and other web content — both for our agency and in general. We did quite a bit of research, so you won't have to!

How Much Does Web Content Writing Cost?

How much do landing pages cost, how much do seo blog posts cost, how much do link bait articles cost, how much does content strategy cost, does your site need technical seo fixes, how much does technical seo cost, how much does seo keyword research and competitive analysis cost, how much do other writing services cost, how much does online seo training cost, web content writing and seo pricing table.

There are many different types of web content writing, each with different price points. Most of our web content writing services involve one of the following:

1. Landing pages  involve writing content like you see on our home, about and services pages.

They should have distinct calls to action, include the SEO keywords you're trying to target and be somewhere in the range of 250-450 words long (depending on the design of the site). The purpose of landing pages is to convert browsers to buyers, and having amazing content can make a huge difference in your conversion rates.

Poorly written content can seriously affect your sales. Landing pages are the most difficult to write out of all the web content, which is why they're so expensive.

2. SEO blog posts  are one of the easiest ways to increase your website traffic.

They drive SEO, fuel social media marketing campaigns and are a good way to introduce people to your brand. Blog posts give people a reason to visit your website, and once readers are there they tend to click around a little. In a directly indirect way, blog posts drive sales — or at least, they do when they're written correctly.

How to Write a Blog Post That Converts — AND Brings in SEO Traffic [Checklist + Complete Guide]

To see what it takes to write a blog post that ranks in SERPs and converts site visitors into buyers, read our guide to writing blog posts that convert .

3. Mini blog posts  – like regular blog posts, only e-mailed to the client as a Word file.

Most of our clients have us post the posts directly to their websites (we include relevant tags/categorization, social bookmarking and other extras), which saves them time and costs them more money. Choosing the mini blog post option takes the client a little more time, but saves them some cash. Toe- may -toe, toe- mah -toe.

4. Link bait and "in-depth" articles  – like standard SEO blog posts, only twice the length and hyped up on awesome.

Designed to go viral, link bait articles tend to be provocative in one way or another. There's a huge amount of effort and talent involved in writing link bait articles, but the traffic payoff is often worth the per-word rate.

So, how much does all this web content writing cost? It's hard to say, because most companies don't advertise their prices. Here's what we were able to find out, though:

Landing page content is where you want to drop your money, since it acts as your website's silent salesman.

If your web content is coming off like a sweaty and desperate used car salesman, it's not going to convert and your sales are going to suffer. Who cares if you're getting a ton of traffic if none of it is converting into actual sales? With that said, how many Benjamins should you expect to throw at your website copy?

"Your website #copy can be your best #sales asset, but not if it sounds like a sketchy used car salesman." - The Content Factory

It's difficult to tell what companies really charge for landing pages, because there are different packages to consider:

https://www.freepik.com/free-photo/product-design-drawing-website-graphic_12189388.htm#query=Content&position=3&from_view=search&track=sph

  • Do you only need landing page copy, or do you need design and development, as well?
  • Are you updating an existing website, or building a new one? In that case, do you already have a custom domain or WordPress themes, or will you (or your agency) include that in the invoice?
  • Does your landing page copywriting include SEO services?

For example, at The Content Factory, we offer both website content writing services on their own, or include them as part of a website design and rebranding package. That way, you get just the copywriting services you need, and don't end up paying more for what you don't need.

Many web design businesses roll the cost of the content writing into their design fees, and then scratch together the content themselves. This is why so many websites have such crappy landing page copy.

How much do writers charge for landing page copy?

There was a really interesting forum discussion about how much to charge for website copywriting — and some professional landing page writers quoted $1,500-$25,000 per page of content. Here's how they responded to somebody who said that landing pages cost ~$100 per:

"The missing part of that sentence '...and earns about that much per month.'... And that's because the clueless know the price of everything and the value of nothing. So they think low price equals a good bet the way a lotto player with a flimsy grasp of odds does. You have about the same chances of winning either way."
"I like your thinking. A landing page for under $100 — that's a fantastic idea. Hey, while we're at it, cars take a lot of effort to build and provide a lot of value — lets start selling those for $500. You're sure to get a reliable vehicle for that price! Another day as a copywriter, and yet another unrealistic pricing expectation from a potential client..."
"I'd have to agree with John. If your client is serious about a landing page that converts and makes money, you'd be looking at $3000 to $4000 all up. There's a huge amount of time involved in creating a successful landing page."

– Plainwords

Now, I'm not going to argue that there isn't a ton of time and skilled labor involved with creating landing pages that convert. But $3,000-$4,000 per page still seems a bit excessive .

When you consider that you're looking at five or more pages per website, the actual cost of content comes to $15,000-$20,000 — about the cost of a new compact car .

Here's the argument these and other people use to justify such expensive fees : if you pay more for content, you'll get a better conversion rate and the extra sales will make up for the obscene per-piece rate.

That may hold true for a luxury car dealership, plastic surgeon's office or home remodeling company, but only because they make so much money on each transaction — and the truth of the matter is that most businesses don't.

The majority of the people who come to us for web content writing services make less than $500 profit on each sale, or are fresh startups that don't have that kind of capital. For them, that argument just doesn't work (especially not in the short term).

At The Content Factory, we bill for landing pages by the word — $1 per, with a project minimum of $1,000.

On rare cases it may cost slightly more, depending on the complexity of the subject and research involved. Our landing pages are usually around 250-500 words and most clients need five pages of content written, which means that the average 5-7 page website content project costs around $2,000 - $4,000, including all edits.

For that price, you get pretty sweet copy — the copy on our site features a certain tone that we find preferable, but when we write for clients we do so with their preferred tone. We've written content for large law firms, real estate agents, adult e-tail sites, startups and everything in between. Everyone wants something a little different, and we can modify our writing style to deliver exactly what the client wants.

For our regular SEO blog posts, we charge between $80 and $950 each.

How much you pay depends on the length and how many you want (we give bulk discounts). If you want a 2,000+ word in-depth article that features interviews from industry experts and thought leaders, it's going to be on the higher end of the spectrum. Our WordPress blogging rates include posting the content to your website, using proper tags/categories, formatting, etc.

If we have access to your analytics, we'll even target our topics based on the popularity of past posts. If you're looking to save some money and know how to publish the blogs yourself, we'll e-mail the Word docs and let you take care of the posting and promotion. We call these "mini blogs" and charge $60 per . Plus, we give bulk discounts for orders of 10 or more.

Link bait blog posts take much more time and talent to write than a standard blog post, although some of our posts turn out to be link bait anyway (we can't help it, sometimes our writers submit incredible work). The whole point of writing link bait articles is to get as many sites to link back to you as possible, which boils down to getting more site traffic.

Link bait takes a lot of time to write and even more time to edit — but it won't cost you as much as a new Honda Civic. We weren't really able to find too many prices for link bait articles, but Christopher Angus says they cost $2,000 each.

Our link bait costs around $750 per post .

Do we guarantee that each one will get you hundreds of backlinks? No...but nobody else can, either. What we can do is employ content strategies that we know work well, such as quoting experts and linking back to their sites in the articles. More often than not, the experts share the content that you feature them in, which can be a great way to leverage larger networks to increase the size of your own.

Another thing that isn't really outlined is the most important: content strategy. Before you can execute a successful content marketing plan, you need to know:

  • Everything about your target audience
  • Which keywords to target, to target the target audience (is that enough targeting?)
  • How difficult the keywords will be to rank for
  • Which keywords your site currently ranking for
  • Which keywords the competition is ranking for
  • Which keywords are more likely to convert
  • If your site needs any technical SEO fixes

Your site needs a strong technical SEO foundation for your content to perform well. That means that there should be no issues in the actual source code, or the way your website is structured, that makes it difficult for Google and other search engines to crawl and index your content.

You can get a free, high-level overview of your site's technical SEO health by completing the form below.

Technical SEO prices are hard to pin down, because there are so many variables. According to Moz , agency SEO rates fall into three basic categories:

Average Cost of SEO Services

As you can see, there's a pretty wide range of prices even within the same pricing model, and there's a good reason for that. Technical SEO requires a diverse range of skillsets, including:

  • SEO writing : Meta descriptions are the first thing people see when they search a keyword and find your content. In 155 characters or fewer, an SEO must captivate your audience enough to win their clicks over your competition, while accurately summarizing the web page and incorporating keywords.
  • Web development : Optimizing your website for speed and performance, implementing accurate Schema markup  and even simple tasks like setting canonical tags require a comfortable grasp of HTML, CSS, JavaScript and JSON.
  • Link building and digital PR : There's a right way and a wrong way to go about link building , and just submitting content to a bunch of directories won't cut it. Successfully pitching media outlets  takes finesse and patience, as many reporters regard their inboxes with a "Thar be dragons" approach from too many spammy link builders.

You also have to take the quality of the agency into consideration. More experience and proof of results can come with a higher price tag, but cheap services from fly-by-night SEO shops may not give you the marketing results you need — worse still, some agencies still resort to black hat SEO tactics that result in manual penalties from Google, which can take countless hours and thousands of dollars to fix.

Which SEO Pricing Model Makes The Most Sense?

There are benefits and drawbacks to each technical SEO pricing approach.

  • Monthly retainers make your SEO budget more predictable, but even if you don't need technical SEO services one month, you still have to pay.
  • Per-project pricing  is the  most popular SEO pricing model, according to Moz . Project costs may also seem predictable, but some agencies can be more change order-happy than others.
  • Hourly SEO rates  are the least predictable, and you could be paying more than you bargained for if you hire a less-than-speedy consultant.

At TCF, we take a hybrid approach between per-project and per-hour pricing. There is no standard technical SEO project, as every website has different needs and different problems. A 25-page website with relatively minor structural problems will cost less to fix than a 1,000-page website with hundreds of 404 errors, a botched https migration and no image alt text to speak of.

Our technical SEO services cost $175 per hour, and you get a detailed project estimate before kick-off.

We provide conservative estimates for each technical SEO project, so you don't get hit with an invoice that costs more than you were expecting, and we have wicked-fast workflows to speed up and automate the remediation process.

In just a few weeks, our technical SEO geek was able to take our site audit score from 66% to 95%. After completion of the project, contentfac.com ranked for 20 new #1 keywords, and the organic traffic TCF received from new and improved keyword rankings in one month was worth $29,650 .

Check out our comprehensive how-to guide for SEO keyword research , if you want to see what it takes to DIY. This all requires quite a bit of time, knowledge and experience — along with a dash of A/B testing. The guide to SEO keyword research we wrote is over 4,000 words and covers a half dozen very important SEO tools. Take a gander at it, and you'll see that this SEO research and writing stuff is neither fast nor easy.

https://www.freepik.com/free-photo/business-documents-office-table-graph-business-with-social-network-diagram-man-working-background_1203641.htm#query=laptop%20spreadsheet&position=2&from_view=search&track=sph

Many SEO agencies are tight-lipped about their keyword research report prices, which makes sense if you know the industry — while SEOs tend to use a similar marketing stack of keyword research tools (you got your Ahrefs, you got your SEMrush, you got your Serpstats, etc.), the methods we use to categorize keywords by search intent, volume, priority, etc. can vary greatly from agency to agency.

It's not like the secret Coca-Cola recipe, but SEOs like to keep some things proprietary.

What do you get with an SEO keyword research analysis?

This can also vary from agency to agency, so it's important to ask the following questions:

  • How many keywords do you provide with your report?
  • Do you conduct competitive analysis, and how many competitors do you compare?
  • Do you include a content strategy with your report?
  • Do you provide content ideas?
  • What data do you provide with the keywords (e.g., volume, competition, search intent, etc.)?
  • Will you break out my keywords by category (e.g., audience verticals, products/services, etc.)?

We've seen SEOs charge as low as $400 for a basic keyword list with no content strategy, and as high as $47/keyword (don't spend all your keywords in one place, I guess!).

At TCF, we complete comprehensive keyword research and competitive analysis for $3,500 .

https://www.freepik.com/free-vector/business-background-design_1072818.htm#query=idea&position=1&from_view=search&track=sph

This includes:

  • Your monthly search volume and competitive ranking
  • The PPC value of your search traffic
  • A full list of the keywords you already rank for, including the corresponding pages on your site that draw the search traffic
  • A full review of your existing keywords
  • Identifying which pages on your site should be updated to move up SERPs for specific keyword searches
  • A list of any additional keywords worth targeting
  • A full analysis of how you rank for keywords, compared to your competition
  • A technical SEO analysis of your site, along with recommended fixes
  • 12 content topic suggestions based on keywords, including descriptions of the suggested posts
  • How much your top two competitors spend on AdWords campaigns per month
  • Which keywords your competitors for, and the corresponding pages on their site that draw the search traffic
  • Which of their keywords overlap with yours (and where you stand)
  • Which sites link to theirs (where they're getting media coverage/backlinks from)
  • Graphic representations of both their organic search traffic and their AdWords spend

We provide hundreds of keywords and a content strategy to target those keywords, while also appealing to your target audience in a way that gets them to convert into paying clients or customers. It's something we've done with great success for our website, and we've helped clients achieve similar goals.

There are a couple of other writing assignments that we get in on a regular basis:

  • Press releases  – A professional press release writer knows how to format the damn thing correctly, which is the hardest part. Well, at least the second hardest part, since coming up with a catchy headline isn't as easy as you'd think. Press releases should be written from a semi-objective viewpoint, so that journalists can copy/paste it into their articles and blogs.

How to Write a Press Release Like a PR Pro (With Free Template!)

Writing a press release that media outlets want to pick up is an art and a science. Read this guide to learn how TCF PR pros write press releases that outlets like Forbes and The Wall Street Journal feature in their coverage. You'll also get a our downloadable press release template — free!

  • Email newsletters  – A good email newsletter writer knows how to create subject lines that boost open rates. Once the readers are in, it's up to the writer to hold their attention and get them to click through to the website (or some other action). The ROI of email marketing is insane, returning $38 for every $1 invested, but great email newsletters are hard to come by — which is why so many end up in the spam folder.

There are all kinds of BS prices listed online for e-mail newsletter and press release writing.

How much does press release writing cost?

You can find somebody on Craigslist to write either for less than $15, or you could pay $2,500 with a fancy online PR agency. Obviously, we're somewhere in the middle.

We charge a flat rate of $1,500 per press release , which includes writing, editing, distribution and promotion.

Our clients have been featured in places like the Wall Street Journal, CNN and the Today show, to name a few. Meanwhile, TCF writers have been quoted everywhere from the New York Times and Forbes to PRDaily and Social Media Today).

You can write the best press release in the world, but there's no guarantee top journalists are going to see it. Our press releases include reaching out to reporters directly, because over the years we've developed a network of connections and tools that give us the direct contact info of just about any journalist, producer and editor you can think of. We've built relationships and earned trust, and it hasn't come easily or quickly.

"You can probably pay someone on Craigslist $15 to write your press release, but you'd be better off spending that $15 on fancy coffee. #PR" - The Content Factory

Website content can be fairly tricky to write and format in a way that resonates with both readers and search engines. Chances are, if you're reading this right now it's because you found us via search engine — this wasn't by accident on our part. It was by hard work.

And now, our site works for us – we receive around $250k per year in organic search traffic alone (via SEMrush ). Our website is one of our highest producing employees, and that's how it should be !

"#SEO turns your website into your most productive #marketing employee." - The Content Factory

We've been able to achieve similar results for clients, which is something you should always check for when looking at agencies or freelancers you may want to outsource your content writing to. The web content writing cost isn't the only thing you should be considering when it comes to outsourcing, you also want to consider the previous record of success that the agency or freelancer has been able to deliver in the past.

Or, if you'd prefer to go the DIY route, we offer online SEO and content writing training.

We'll show you everything from how to run an SEO audit and research keywords to advanced web content writing techniques and link building. For an idea of what it's like, check out our free webinar: 9 Expensive SEO Mistakes You're (Probably) Making .

We've seen other companies charge anywhere from $1,100 to $8,500 for SEO training . Some of the upcharges don't make a ton of sense — for example, in-person, on-site SEO training often adds bulk to your invoice, even though you spend most of your classroom time in front of the computer. This is the 21st century, and there's no reason you shouldn't be able to learn search engine optimization in your pajamas.

Thanks for the feedback — let us know if you need any help with writing!

I just wanted to comment and say that I really enjoyed reading your blog post here. It was very informative and I also digg the way you write! Keep it up and I’ll be back to read more in the future

Interesting information. Some are getting rich as mentors/experts in creating landing pages… a single page brings them more income than others earn in an entire year!

I am not exaggerating but this article may be a turning point for me. In my freelance writing career of 2 years, the client always appreciated me but sadly I was not aware of the actual price I can quote. I charged drastically lower rates and I believe that the quality was never low (none complained till date). Really thanks a lot for this valuable article…

Anjit, I am also a victim of the same.

I used and still charge less for a good quality write-up; however, I believe its time to speak out loud. Anyway, what according to you would be a better quote for a 500 word write up?

I completely agree with you Anjith and Irfan. Although it’s quite late now, I at least know what I should actually be charging for my articles. I had no idea and the clients are the last people who you can trust to help you with these as they will try to reduce the costs for themselves. In India especially, I’ve noticed this trend of cheating freelancers out of a good pay and might even resell your articles without your permission (even when there is no agreement or contract stating that they can).

This is very interesting. Pricing for SEO content writing and blog writing does vary quite a bit across the board.

I think it’s a good idea to always ask for a writing sample, just to ensure the writer can really write. Numbers and numbers– but only the right words justify the accuracy of those numbers :)!

Typo; sorry. “Numbers are numbers”

I think the cost varied depending on both the writer’s expertise and the budget of the client. But, the more money the client intends to pay, the better the contents are supposed to be.

I think the cost varies depending on both the writer’s expertise and the budget of the client. But, the more money the client intends to pay, the better the contents are supposed to be.

I think, the sector average prices are too high. That’s insane. I would rather hire a in-house journalist than outsource at this high prices. Thanks for insides!

Very interesting, thank you. I’m a ghostwriter who has been asked to write a website and was looking for an idea of what to quote, this really helps – I’ll be coming back to this site!

Thank you for this post. I’ve been doing research to determine my own pricing; and I wasn’t actually finding much despite my excellent Google-do ninja skills. This helped me immensely in making my decisions. Thank you.

Mostly it is all based on quality of the content. So getting web content writing services is little bit difficult because it is our responsible to check whether it has good quality or not. In my opinion they may offer up to $25.

How do you charger someone? I mean what are the steps and how do you get money into your account? I mean for example, your a freelance coder and you offer your services to change their website, what information do you need to access the website and change things and how do you assure you get paid. I know aboutsoluetly nothing of this so anyone help please?

PayPal is a good place to start for payment options! It sounds like you need more background info that we’ve given in this blog – maybe a book would give you a better overview. We recommend Freelancing for Dummies.

A lot of people here are getting the wrong idea about this information. It’s great to be motivated to write great content, and it’s certainly wonderful to be able to charge a lot for the work that you do, but make no mistake, people will pay what you are worth. If you provide excellent content you will get paid more. If you are a generic freelance content writer with sub par skills and little knowledge of what you are doing except “writing and making some cash”, you aren’t worth nearly as much as these folks are writing about here. 5 star, top notch content writers are worth 1$ per word. Most of the people I see clamoring for all this money are really only worth 5-6 per 500 word article.

This is a great information piece from some wonderful writers, but this isn’t at all a gauge to what you all should be charging for your content. Or you might find yourself sitting around a lot with very little work to do and a whole lot of free time.

As a freelance writer, I've found that many clients can't tell the difference between the kind of writing that's worth 2¢ to 3¢ a word and the kind of writing that's worth 8¢, 10¢ or yes, $1 per word. If you're working with an educated person who can produce readable, error-free blog posts, then you should never be paying $5 per post, which amounts to 1¢ per word. A simple 500 word article takes at least an hour to research, write and edit, on average, and that's below minimum wage for an hour's work in every major English-speaking country.

Sorry, but NOBODY who's smart enough and well enough educated to write competantly is worth less than minimum wage. Anybody who's working for that is either horribly desperate or living in a developing country. In the first instance, you're taking advantage of someone and in the second, you're probably getting low quality work.

People who insist on underpaying writers usually get what they deserve: poor quality content that won't do much to boost search engine rankings and that will turn off any potential customer who's a native English speaker.

I agree that $1 per word is a rate that only a very experienced, knowledgable and skilled content writer can get away with charging, but less experienced, less knowledgeable writers are not worth $5 per post. There's a vast middle ground between casual but competant freelancers and expert copywriters, but the minimum you should be paying per post is around $20. Anything less than that isn't worth a competant writer's time.

Well said Dee Miller!!

I really hope you have not used the words “competantly” and “competant” in your work product… quite ironic given the point you’re trying to make AND the fact that this website offers spellcheck during the comment writing process… or is it “commant”?

I beg to differ.

If you think that each client will know the exact value of what he's getting in terms of content writing, as well as being willing to pay the same value, you're awfully mistaken.

Generally, the market defines the price for value, and if you take the global market, the pricing changes country to country, and it's hard to see what the actual price should be.

Not to mention, as Dee said, not all people see the difference in value of one article to another. Couple that with an exponential rise of pricing compared with quality, you have a true forest of prices and qualities…

Popularity and authority are vital as well. You can have the same value in terms of content, and different prices for each. And if the more expensive one has a name to him or herself, you'd see them get more work for the higher price, but still the same output quality…

Of course, if your output is shitty, and you put a high price tag to it, you won't get anywhere.

But assuming you'll get the price for your exact value, and that's all to it, that the world just works like that, is plain wrong.

I am not sure by any means people pay $1500 per press release. Suppose, a press release has 2000 words, still, it does not make sense to pay this much.

If peopel are paying you, I believe you are creating magic for them. I am from developing country, and you know in Pakistan, $1500 can feed a family of 10 people for 5 months.

Not sure what to say.

$1500 doesn’t exactly have the same affect in the US these days (not even close in fact), but you are right, we are indeed creating magic for our clients at this rate.

What Michael said – also, $1500 is what my husband and I used to pay in monthly rent for our small, one bedroom apartment in Toronto. Just to clarify for people who don't live in the US, UK, Canada or Australia: $1500 is around a week's wages for a native English speaker with a mid-range income. It's a lot for a single press release (completely worth it when a network of journalists is coming into play, IMHO), but it's not crazy.

Because they're charging for distrubution as well. You're not just paying for the words, you're paying for getting your story placed, too. That's specialized work.

Absolutely Michael. Thanks for the comment!

I work for a US marketing firm with all American employees. We charge about $150 to write a press release and the same amount to distribute it through a service like PR Leap. No wonder why we're so busy… I can't believe people charge $1500 for a single press release.

Glad to hear you guys are busy! Most of the media coverage we generate is not through a press release distribution service (like PRWeb), but through our own reporter and editor contacts – this is primarily what our clients pay for, besides the strategy and writing of the release itself.

Generally speaking, our clients think that $1500 per press release is a good value for what they receive in return (our releases have led to coverage by CBS Evening News, the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, the Today show, etc.), otherwise they wouldn’t consistently pay for them – we’re also pretty busy these days. If we don’t think we’ll be able to generate at least $1500 in value from a press release for a client, we try to encourage them to look at other options.

I’d be curious to see what a $150 press release reads like. Thanks for your comment!

Useful info for those of us just starting to venture into content production for others. I have previously worked for businesses that told me what I'd be paid, but it's much nicer telling someone else to pay me what I'm worth! 🙂

I love it when a company trying to sell content has links in their article that are broken.   Shows me I am in the wrong place….

Thanks for bringing it to our attention, albeit in a passive aggressive way. We fixed the broken link 🙂

Nice clear article. Very helpful for those in our field – and great patience by Kari, given some of the comments.

Thanks for the postive feedback, David. Glad you found the post helpful…and noticed my restraint, haha.

Very informative article about outsourcing. Very useful, now i know how much do I have to charge my clients! Haha! Thanks for this! 😀

Great and  a very useful blog for me. Keep sharing.

For someone who's being outsourced, these rates are way too high! But I'd agree, if clients do get what they're paying for, then there's no question about it. Small business owners might prefer lower rates and get poorly written articles. For big companies, however, there's a high chance that they'd opt for a $500 article. But if someone from my place would receive such rate, that would already be a month's salary for someone working for around 5 years. 🙂

Thanks for your comment! One thing I’m hung up on: a month’s salary for $500?! If that’s what the company is paying employees, they’re probably not going to want to pay a digital PR firm $500 per blog post. And that’s okay – we’re not for everyone.

The cost seems like a bit too high but I guess you'd see the real worth if you see the website's rank getting better and better, the content is, for me, the biggest key to achieve that.

I want to do the job of content writer. I have experience. I am skilled in writing articles and reports as a graduate of science. I am interested in writing articles. Please help me finding a job of content writer online that is reliable.

I so adore your blog. it is simply insighful, thought provoking and highly informative. As someone who works for a Recruitment Agency that specializes in getting the best talents for clients all over the globe, i have to admit that copywriting is indeed a job that needs to be well-thought of as this is a way to generate sales for many companies. thank you so much for sharing this ariticle. I have to admit that i am a fan of your blog. Cheers!

Reading this post now in 2015 and wondering how much your prices have changed since the posting? More importantly, I'd like to know about email newsletters- industry as well as your prices, and what all is included (only the content or managing the campaign, i.e., sending out the mails as well)?

It's a great post BTW, so thank you!

We try keep this blog post updated with our latest pricing for copywriting (we circle back every six months or so), but you’re free to email Karilee(at)contentfac(dot)com to get the latest pricing info. The link at the top of the article, to our generic proposal, is always up to date.

Hey Plz tell me, that how much I should charge for below requirement:

1.       The content should be unique.

2.       Min. 20 pages for each topic with minimum 500 words each. The content should also contains pictures / coding /etc where ever it is necessary for better understanding of the topics.

3.       Idea here is visitor coming to the site can learn for it and get fair idea about the technology.

4.       Each technology content should have interview questions asked in the industry with 50 questions

How much you charge for website content (including your rates for blog content) is up to you. We’ve developed our rate structure over the last five years, and we’re able to charge more now than we were at the beginning because we’ve built up case studies and our own internal sets of best practices to help clients achieve the SEO and conversion successes that they’re looking for.

What you charge for online content writing is largely dependent on your skill, past successes, client testimonials, turnaround time, etc. There’s a lot that goes into it — and unfortunately, that means that i’m not able to advise what your rates should be.

Great info, very specific.Freelance is awful. $30 an hour or less for projects and they allot little time. 200 for a landing page, 200 for a print ad, 200 for an E-mail– before taxes. I really wish I had been a plumber.

I agree Daniel. I am shocked that some of the people who post projects on Freelancer start the range of payments from $10 onwards for work that actually should go into intellectual property! It is totally unfair and unsuitable for professional and experienced writers! Yes there are times when we actually end up thinking doing something else would be more worthwhile…

Writing an article requires lots of creativity and patience. Its the game of words and if You like juggling with words, Freelance writing is a great career for You. but because of my busy schedule there is some one that has being helping me.

This is great information on the costs of blogging. I wanted to know the estimates and you clearly stated them. Thanks a lot.

Not only the content prices but SEO and web design and development costs are decreasing now  days. This is because of the high amount of man power available in the field. Till the time we are not going to respect our own work than how others will do the same. Stop working on low prices. If you are good at anything .. charge accordingly.

Having quality content stand out and makes your website and product to rank high on Google. My website ranked on Google fist page from an article that was professionally written for me.

My company definitely needed this article!

Glad to hear we could help!

Great…..Very helpful blog….I am a freelancer since 1 year and working for a top freelance website but I seriously don’t know the actually market price of writing. It helps me to improve my writing and approach to writing.

I just happened upon your site and read your article. You gave a ton of great info. I will continue to follow as I too, am a writer and can use as much advice and education I can get. My website thewriter-robertagriffin.com (I know very original right?) I am currently constructing my site so there is nothing to see just yet. I guess I have to say, it was fortuitous for me that I found you.

Again, thank you for the great information.

Roberta Griffin

Hi Roberta,

Thanks for the great feedback! Make sure you sign up for our newsletter, we share a ton of great tips and tricks for content, PR, SEO and social media marketing. We’re also starting a mastermind group and class series soon, which will start with keyword research and go all the way through marketing your content after you’ve published it.

Hello, thank you for such an informative article. My friend and I had been freelancing for middleman clients for quite a long time. My friend writes really amazing and I do it like so-so. We were paid $2 and even $1 for a 500-word article. It is really great to have known the actual cost. Would you, please tell how to contact/reach clients directly to get paid this much?

I was trying to find out how much I should pay for a guest article. “For our regular SEO blog posts, we charge between $80 and $950 each…” I didn’t expect it to be this much! I am actually happy too see that the prices are in that range.

Good read, thanks Kari

I do wish more firms, like yours, understood the amount of good will they generate when they don’t “hold back” on pricing information that 1) helps so many others – even competitors and 2) helps to strengthen the industry as a whole and raise the perception of writers as the same time.

Publishing this kind of “bedroom” information (in a well-considered, detailed manner) brings everyone closer and positions THE CONTENT FACTORY as a credible industry leader and, as an organization where “knowledge resides openly” – two big gains in my book. Thank you for your awareness and contextualizing what you’ve shared in a way that truly makes it worthwhile. Please don’t stop.

Far too many independent consultants and/or freelancers lack sounding boards with any kind of deserved authority. Many business owners fail to recognize that “friendly expert advice” is more a contradiction in oxymorons, than a worthwhile source of feedback. It’s not unlike saying, “Upon hearing Mr. Trump conclude his finely-honed remarks with such an elegant flourish, the fat chicks in attendance enthusiastically nodded their chubby heads as well as their oversized yabbbo’s.”

Chris Traynor, Knowledge Scout WHIP-SMART CONSULTING “Making Business Brilliant” [email protected]

Does The Content Factory ever use freelance writers? Because, compared to the other rates for content, $60 to $80 seems awfully low – at least, assuming posts of 500 words. Although, it may just be that my assumptions are off. I always thought that agencies charged clients twice as much as writers were paid for a post, but I can’t remember where I got that idea. Still, at this level, I would expect those prices to be the starting rates for what the writers are actually being paid for SEO posts.

Depends on the content and the number of words. I use a website – they charge about $60 for a 1500 word article, very good price for the quality of the articles, unlike those other garbage I’ve had other people work on. For web content and landing pages, about a $150. They are not the cheapest if you’re used to odesk and guru writers, but hey, quality trumps price. So far, all articles have been superb. 🙂

We are consuming about 100 articles a day from different levels of writers (for SEO, guest posting, putting on our own blogs and highly researched product review articles).

Few insights as a client –

1. When we pay per word, there is certain lack of accountability in the content and more often would seem like the words were put together just for the sake of meeting the content word count.

2. When we pay per article, we sometimes feel like the content could have been explained a bit better but since it was per article project it was cut short. .

After dealing with the confusion for few months here is what we came up with –

Pay per article, where the price depends on the range of words.

Lets say from 750-1000 words $XX , from 1000-1500 words XX and so on.

This way, the writer doesn’t stuff words and have room for putting only the words needed while still getting fairly paid for the effort and the quality is maintained for the sake of long term relationships and bulk work.

How much does correct content writing can grow your ROI? – I think it’s even better title for that article. Great overview, thanks.

And content writing is correct when every article is in TOP Google, isn’t it? That’s why importance of using long tail keywords grow every day.

I am new to content writing but not new to writing. I’ve written for a community newspaper and I maintain a blog of my own. I have been offered a content writing opportunity writing content for websites to build business. But when I do the math, I’m inclined to say no. 50 articles at 500 words to be produced in two week and paid a total of $400. That is $8.00 and article and less than a penny per word. What I’m understanding is that $20 per article may be a good starting point?

I think it’s a good move to pass on the gig that pays less than a penny per word. Writing website content (e.g.: home page, about us, etc.) is a lot more time and labor intensive than writing blog content, and you could almost certainly do better. $20/500 words could be a good place to start, depending on your experience. I’d go through Craigslist (here’s a great guide outlining how to find freelance work ), and apply for writing gigs on an ongoing basis until you can build your portfolio and increase your rates to be commensurate with your experience and the ROI you provide to clients.

I want to know how much i will charge for an article to publish on my website if the article is of 350words and m not professional , i m writing post on my website from 4months.

This is great! It is such a lovely article. It’s just amazing how you put all these together on “How Much Does Professional Web Content Writing Cost” with such great tips! Looking forward to more of these.

excellent post, very informative. I wonder why the other specialists of this sector don’t understand this. You must continue your writing. I’m confident, you have a great readers’ base already!

Basically it’s all on the quality of the content, how much fresh content? Thank You so much.

You want to update your site at least once a month, but it’s more important to post the right kind of content (long-form, keyword-targeted) than it is to just constantly post fresh content that isn’t designed to rank well in SERPs.

Very informative and well-written article. I just loved it. Thank you for sharing this info.

SEO service is the most convenient way of reaching thousands of new customers every day. Web content is a boon to brand your business to the potential audience. Very informative post.

The answer to the question is: It depends…there are so many factors involved to answer this question. To look for a baseline is ludicrous. Sadly, now that you’ve outlined your fee structure, you’ve commoditized your brand… just like tomatoes.

It’s not sad at all – we put our rates out on front street to save everyone time, and there is some fluctuation depending on the industry and difficulty of work involved. Don’t have the $ to pay us to manage SEO for you? Our trainings are probably the way to go.

Maybe focus on your brand, and not ours 😉

Thanks for the article to know about the SEO Serice and Web Content Writing cost and its a motivation for the other writers to make the money. Thank you for the information.

How Much Do Content Writing Services Cost In 2022?

content writing for website charges

Figuring out how much you should be paying for freelance writers to create your content can be challenging – since writers price their services differently depending on the kind of content you’re ordering (and how much of it you need).

In this article, we’ll go over the average content writer prices and discuss what you might expect while looking for a freelancer to work with.

Content Writer Prices (In A Nutshell)

How much a freelancer will charge depends a lot on the specific circumstances of both the writer and the job you want them to do. But to give you a quick idea of what you might expect when scoping out a freelancer for your next project, here’s a look at the current industry averages.

Typically, average freelance writer rates can range anywhere from $.05 per word for a writer who is just starting out in the industry, to over $1 per word for the most experienced writers with years of experience. If you work with a freelancer who charges by the hour, you could be looking at an hourly rate that falls anywhere between $16 and over $100 per hour.

These numbers and the numbers you’ll see in the rest of the article are industry averages, and not what we charge at The Content Panel. You’ll find that our freelancers have much clearer rates, and our pricing is much cheaper than what you’ll find in this article.

Why Such a Huge Discrepancy with Content Pricing?

We’ve provided you with a vast pricing window that may be hard to make sense of. What makes some writers worth 20 times as much as other writers? The massive range in content writer cost comes down to several factors, including:

Experience.

New writers with less than a year’s worth of experience will charge the lowest rates. As writers get more experience, they start upping their rates, sometimes coming in at a dollar or more per word. But experience isn’t always just about how much time a writer has spent in their profession.

How long a freelancer has been specializing in a specific type of writing, how much time they’ve spent in a specific industry, and how much experience they have with getting proven results for their clients are equally important. These factors all go into the formula for deciding a writer’s experience level that will affect their freelance copywriter rate.

Thoroughness.

A writer getting paid a small fee per job will try to get each task done as quickly as possible. To make a decent wage off $20 blog posts, you have to write a lot of them. For this reason, writers who charge the lowest rates are the most likely to find corners to cut, like proofreading and research.

On the other hand, higher-paid writers will feel comfortable taking their time and paying attention to detail while working on a piece. Higher paid writers are more likely to give you a finished product that requires minimal edits or amendments.

Type Of Writing.

Some writing takes a lot more time and skill to write than others, and the pricing of these projects will reflect that. We’ll go further into detail about the several types of content later in the article.

Complexity And Technicality Of The Subject.

If your business is in a complicated or technical industry, you will need to find a writer with experience in the industry. You might be able to find a writer with less knowledge but who is capable of putting in the research needed to learn the subject well enough to write about it, but you may be required to pay for their research time.

Less technical subjects like video games or food will naturally be easier – and cheaper – to write about than healthcare or coding. If the content you want to be written requires interviews, quotes, or graphic design, your content writer cost is likely to be greater, too.

Location Of The Freelance Writer.

American and British freelance writers tend to cost the most to hire. Writers from other countries are likely to charge a lower rate that will reflect the local cost of living.

The Audience For Your Content.

If you want content geared toward a general audience or people who might not have a lot of knowledge on your topic, your rates will be lower than if you have a topic geared for an expert audience. This is because the more your audience knows, the more your freelance writer needs to know. And as mentioned above, more experience means a higher fee.

Content Writer Costs Depends on the Type of Content

“Content” is an incredibly broad term, and not all content is equal when it comes to difficulty and the amount of skill required to write it. A blog will be a lot cheaper than a whitepaper because to write a white paper, your freelancer will need a certain level of expertise in your industry and will have to do an extensive amount of research. But a generalist would be able to write a great blog post for you without nearly as much research. There’s an extensive list of types of writing you can hire a freelancer to do:

  • Social media content
  • Linkbait articles
  • Landing Pages
  • Whitepapers
  • Video and webinar scripts
  • Sales letters
  • Press releases

All these content types come with different price points because they require varying levels of experience and research. If your freelance writer is providing extra services, you’ll need to account for those while budgeting for the content you want to buy. Some additional services a freelance writer might offer are:

  • SEO keyword research and competitive analysis to help you beat the competition.
  • Technical SEO fixes for your existing website to make it better optimized.
  • Web development to optimize your website for performance and speed. Freelance writers who offer this service must be comfortable with CSS, HTML, JSON, and JavaScript.
  • Link building and digital PR to get your website more backlinks and build your presence on the web.

The way freelance writers charge for these services can be as variable as the services themselves. A basic keyword list might come in as low as $400, or as high as charging nearly $50 per keyword. Meanwhile, comprehensive keyword research and competitive analysis might cost you around $3,500! These services are not always necessary for content writing and depending on your goals, you might not have to plan for them in your budget.

Keep in mind that these numbers are industry averages, and not what we charge. Our pricing is cheaper than you’ll find on this list and the freelancers who work for us have set-in-stone rates per word so you never have to guess how much you’ll be paying.

  • Upcharge for rushed delivery: an additional 10% to 25%
  • Upcharge for keyword optimization: an additional 10%
  • Down payment: 10% to 25% of the total price of the project
  • Monthly retainers: varies based on the volume of anticipated work per month

Which Type of Pricing Strategy is Best?

There are pros and cons to working with freelance writers who use each of the above methods to determine their freelance writer rates. Writers who charge by the word can be trusted not to waste your money. Since their pay is based on their output, you know exactly what you can expect from them and you won’t have to worry about any surprises on your bill. The potential downside to this type of rate is that a writer who charges by the word might focus more on quantity rather than quality.

Most freelance writers tend to charge per project. They’ll give you a fixed cost for the content they’re writing for you that won’t change based on the length of the content. The upside of this pricing strategy is that you know exactly what to expect in terms of pricing. The downside is that you might not know exactly what your writer is doing for that fee, and you can be overcharged without realizing it.

Charging by the hour is a less common approach to pricing by freelancers, but it’s still not uncommon to see. With this fee strategy, you pay your writer based on how long they work on your project. The hourly rate includes the time they spend researching the project before they even start writing. If you know your writer is efficient, this can be a good rate style to agree to. But if you don’t trust your freelance writer to work effectively on your project, they may take longer than they need to and end up overcharging you for the work.

In general, you might not have very much control over how the freelance writers you hire choose to charge you. But at The Content Panel, we charge by the word so you know exactly what you’re getting for your money every time.

Client Relationships Can Affect Freelance Writer Costs

When looking for freelance writers for hire , there are two types of client-freelancer relationships you might have with your content writer.

  • Direct client-freelancer relationships are ones where there are no intermediaries. You will find your freelancer and contact them directly to establish a working relationship. The benefit of this relationship is that there is no “middleman” between you and your freelancer and no additional fee that needs to be paid to a service that you used to find your writer. The downside to this approach is that you have to put in all the leg work to find and vet your content writer, which might be more time-consuming than you think.
  • Indirect client-freelancer relationships use an intermediary, like us! The upside of having an indirect relationship with your freelancer is that you don’t have to put in the work to find the perfect freelancer. The service that you pay to act as intermediary deals with matching you with a writer, which allows you to focus on other aspects of your business. The downside of this kind of relationship is that direct contact with your freelancer might be limited depending on the intermediary you choose.

What to Expect from a Freelance Writer Based on Your Budget

Now that you know what the average content writer’s price range is, it’s time for you to decide how much you want to pay for the content you want based on your budget.

If you have a smaller budget and you’re looking to hire a writer on the lower end of the fee scale, you should expect to work with someone newer in the copywriting industry who will have less experience. That doesn’t mean they won’t be a fantastic writer, but they will lack the type of industry knowledge that comes with years of working in the job. You should expect to spend a bit more time working with them before they get everything exactly right. This might mean guiding them with specific instructions, giving them more time to research, and doing more edits.

If you would rather save more time and effort, but don’t want to spend a ton of money, you’ll be looking at a freelancer in the middle range for pricing. This type of writer will have a few years of experience working as a content writer and will know a decent amount, but not everything. They’ll be a bit more expensive for their experience, but you’ll be able to spend less time working with them overall because they will mostly be able to manage on their own.

If you want to work with a writer on the higher end of the price range, you’ll be getting a writer with several years of experience. This writer has developed a process for doing high-quality work and getting their writing submitted on time. They will give you a product that is finished, or close to finished with minimal edits required. They will probably have some name recognition that will give you a boost by being associated with your brand, and they will have a thorough understanding of the industry you do business in as well as the specific type of writing you need to have done.

Adding content to your website is a key factor in attracting people to your business, but it can be hard to figure out how much you should be paying for content when there’s such a huge range of prices out there. The world of content writing is an expansive one with a seemingly infinite number of types of content and highly variable pricing. What you’ll end up paying for content will depend on what you want your freelance writer to write for you, and how much experience you want them to have before you work with them.

What’s Your Rate? How to Charge for Web Content Writing

by Elise | Running Your Business

When I first started out in this business, I didn’t think that much about freelance writing rates or how much to charge for web content writing.

I just wanted to get work and get paid , so I’d take anything I thought I could.

I remember landing a gig with good old Demand Media back in the content mill days and I think I was getting $25 per 500-word article.

I thought I hit the jackpot!

I thought, if I could write and submit one article in 30 minutes, I’d be making $50 an hour.

This was amazing to me when I thought about it in theory, but realistically, it didn’t work out as well as I had thought.

Table of Contents

Why It’s So Confusing to Figure Out How Much to Charge for Web Content Writing

If you’re as confused as ever about how much to charge for web content writing, don’t worry, because you’re definitely not the only one.

I’ve been doing this for almost a decade and I still find it confusing sometimes.

It’s extra confusing as a beginner, but you may not be fully aware why.

Let’s discuss some of the biggest contributors to this confusion.

There are tons of low-value writers on freelance marketplaces.

Freelancer marketplaces like Upwork and Elance are where the cheapest writers thrive.

Many of these writers can set their rates extremely low because they live in parts of the world where the cost of living is quite low (and as expected, many don’t speak English as their first language).

Makes sense, right?

I mean, if you can crank out loads of mediocre articles for $10 to $15, have no problem getting clients for that kind of work, and be able to afford all your lifestyle amenities, then why not take advantage of it?

A lot of beginner freelance writers turn to these platforms, see how low the competition has set their rates, and then assume that they should follow suit by doing the same so they have a shot at getting hired.

But if you live in a wealthier part of the world like the US, Canada, the UK, or Australia where the cost of living is a lot higher, then running your freelancing business and competing against all the cheap writers on those platforms just isn’t sustainable over the long run.

Freelance marketplaces can be useful for getting some initial experience if you’re a total newbie, but beyond that, they’re not going to help you make a living from your writing.

There’s no market rate for written content.

Some writers charge as little as $0.2 to $0.5 a word.

Elite writers can get paid between $1 to $3 to word (or alternatively just a nice flat fee that translates to around that amount).

In other words, there’s an enormous range between the cheapest writer rates and the most expensive writer rates.

Most writers who take their businesses seriously typically assume they should set their rate somewhere in the middle—maybe somewhere between $0.10 and $0.50 a word — but even that’s considered a significant range.

After all, there’s a big difference between charging $50 versus $250 per 500-word article.

Charge lower and you might have an easier time getting gigs, but you might not get the client of your dreams and you’ll probably end up working more.

Charge higher and you might maximize your hourly rate, however there’s always a risk of scaring away clients who aren’t convinced that it’s worth paying that much for content.

There are lots of factors that can influence your rate.

Every writing project different.

This is one of the main reasons why the most experienced writers don’t publish their rates on their writer websites.

The more details they can get about the project and the client, the more they can tailor their pricing and maximize their hourly rate.

Here are some of the most obvious contributing factors that can drastically influence how to set your web content writing rate:

  • The niche you’re writing for (including industry, content format, and client type)
  • The length and scope of the project
  • Your current level of knowledge/experience
  • Your current online reputation (including portfolio samples )
  • Any credentials you may have
  • How fast you can type/write/work
  • How much research you have to do
  • Add-on work like outline creation, interviewing, image sourcing, formatting, publishing, social media
  • Revisions ( editing and proofreading)
  • How much time you intend spending writing versus doing everything else (marketing, administrative tasks, etc.)

And the list goes on.

There’s a lot that goes into a writing project.

Luckily, as you gain more experience, you learn how to price your projects more effectively.

You’re confusing it with a real job.

Now I want to really hone in on that last bullet point mentioned above.

How much time you intend to spending writing vs doing everything else has a very important impact on your rates.

A lot of new freelancers mistakenly charge with the idea in mind that their hourly rate should be right on par with a typical job.

While someone with a regular job might be thrilled to be paid $30 for an hour, it’s not the same for freelancers.

Freelancers have to charge more to account for all the time they’re working, but not actually writing.

For instance, let’s say that you agree to write a 500-word article for $50 and you finish it in an hour.

Now let’s say that you spend another five hours of your day pitching, answering emails, having a Skype meeting, reaching out to new connections on LinkedIn, and updating your portfolio .

You didn’t make $50 an hour for a whole day of work—you made $50 for one hour and nothing else for the rest of the day.

If you were an employee with a real job, you’d be paid $50 an hour for those five extra hours of work, but you’re not—you’re a freelancer.

It’s normal to have an imbalance in the beginning when you’re just starting out , but as you build your business and become more experienced, you should be working toward setting your rates so that they cover all the business-related tasks that you inevitably must do.

Become a Well-Paid Freelance Writer in Just 10 Days

The reality of figuring out how much to charge for web content writing.

You probably want me to throw out a number to consider as your starting point and then tell you how to go from there, right?

I wish I could, but unfortunately it’s not that simple.

I can, however, give you some extremely general guidelines to give you some ideas about how to go about setting your own rates.

We’re specifically talking about how to charge for web content writing in this post, so I’m going to focus on three of the most common types of web content: blog posts , website pages, and email series messages.

  • An average 500-word website page, such as an About Us page, should take about two to three hours to write up.
  • An average email series message should take about one to two hours to write up.
  • An average 500-word blog post should take about one to two hours to write up.

Note that all of the above are considered “average,” meaning there should be no need for extensive research, interviewing, technical stuff, or add-on work (like image sourcing).

These estimated timeframes also don’t include the emails and/or meetings you have with client about the project, any outlines you need to create, or any revisions you might need to make.

In the freelancing world, a general rule is to never make less than $50 an hour.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen this stated online. If there’s any rate that all freelancers seem to agree on, its the $50-an-hour minimum rule.

Of course, higher is preferred.

In fact, it’s not uncommon for beginners to be making as much as $60 to $100 an hour.

So, for an average 500-word website page, you probably need to charge a minimum of $150 plus more for all the extra stuff to be hitting your minimum of $50 an hour.

For an email series message or a 500-word blog post, you’d have to charge at least $50 to $100 plus more.

Remember that these are just extremely general guidelines for average web content types.

Something as simple as the type of client could mean the difference between charging hundreds more, or hundreds less.

(Hint: You can charge more from bigger, more reputable clients.)

How to Calculate Your Rate for Your Average Freelance Writing Project

Before I show you how to do the calculation to determine your own rate, you need to know the three different ways you can go about pricing a project:

  • Per project

Charging Per Word

This is a pretty standard way for freelance writers to charge, and it’s favourited by many.

It’s very popular for blog content.

The great thing about charging per word is that you get to make more money if you can write faster and work more efficiently.

Charging Per Hour

Many freelancers frown upon charging by the hour, myself included, but it can definitely work for some.

The most obvious downside is that whether you work faster or slower, you still make the same hourly rate.

Charging Per Project

This is preferred for big projects that are lengthy, require lots of extra work other than writing, and are typically completed over a longer period of time.

By pricing per project, you can work every component of the project into your price and avoid any extra, surprise charges for the client later on.

How Should You Charge?

I recommend charging per word for simple/straightforward projects.

You can also charge by batches of words as long as it comes out to a good per-word rate—like $100 for 500 to 750 words, $150 for 750 to 1,000 words, and $200 for 1,000 to 1,250 words.

The benefit of charging by batches of words is that you get to earn a little more per word if the word count is on the lower end ($0.20 per word for a 500-word article versus $0.13 per 750-word article).

It all comes down to personal preference and how you work best.

Eventually, as you move into bigger and lengthier projects with lots of extra work in addition to writing, you might want to look into charging per project.

Now let’s take a look at a standard example calculation for how to charge for web content writing.

There are a few variables you need to estimate to be able to do this:

  • The annual salary you’d like to make
  • How much time you’ll take off per year
  • How many hours per week you’ll spend writing
  • How many words you can write in an hour

Note: Four hours of writing per day might not sound like a lot, but for a beginner, it actually is a lot.

Keep in mind that you’ll likely be spending another four hours (or more) marketing your services, creating quotes , sending/answering emails, bookkeeping, talking to clients on the phone, creating/sending invoices, and performing other necessary administrative tasks.

I’m going to use an example to determine an appropriate per-word rate, which you can use yourself by plugging in your own numbers.

Let’s say, as a beginner, you’re aiming to make $65,000 this year —a nice starting salary.

You plan on taking two weeks vacation, so you’ll work 50 weeks out of the year.

You also plan on spending four hours a day, five days a week actually writing—so that’s 20 hours per week .

And finally, let’s say you can write and edit a 400-word article in an hour .

$65,000 divided by 50 working weeks is $1,300 that you need to make per week .

$1,300 divided by 20 hours per week is $65 that you need to make per hour .

$65 divided by 400 words you can write per hour comes to about $0.16.

Your starting rate would be $0.16 per word.

Want to do this calculation for yourself with your own numbers?

I’ve created a calculator for you below, so you can try out different numbers to see how they change.

Just enter your numbers in the given fields and the final three fields will show what you need to earn per week, what you need to earn per hour, and what you need to charge per word .

Extra Things to Consider When Calculating Your Rate

I know that your above calculation can look pretty good if you put all your ideal numbers in and came out with a reasonable rate, but truth be told, it can still be off.

The reason?

Real life can’t always be worked into an equation.

To get as accurate as possible, you should try to account for all those extra unplanned but necessary things that can affect how much time you need to spend writing and how much you need to charge.

Some of these things might include:

  • Sick days (for yourself and for your kids if you have them)
  • Long weekends you want to take
  • Weekly errands that cut into working time
  • Extra expenses (personal expenses like vacations, professional expenses like software)
  • Education (reading, taking online courses)

You can’t make an exact estimate for these types of things, but you can certainly ballpark them.

Lastly, you need to be prepared to raise your rates periodically.

Raising your rates is key to growing your business successfully and eventually earning a really good living from it.

It also reminds your clients that your value is increasing over time.

I plan to do a whole other blog post specifically on this topic because I know that many freelancers are terrified of scaring their clients away by announcing higher rates.

Another benefit of charging per word over per hour is that it’s easier to keep clients happy.

A client probably isn’t going to protest a $0.02 per-word increase compared to a $15 per-hour increase, even if it works out to be around the same amount.

But that’s for another blog post.

What other tips do you have for figuring out how to charge for web content writing?

Mustafa Omer

Hi Elise, I have been working at a digital marketing agency in pakistan for more than 6 months. I work as a blog writer there. I mainly write marketing content for USA small businesses.

My question is that as a content writer i only write offsite seo blog posts. My article has following qualities. -Maximum plagiarism of upto 5%. -No readability issues. -Proper usage of keywords including in meta title and meta description. -Image creation and video content.

Other than that i also write Youtube blogs of 200 words.

However i have no experience in web content for landing pages and 5 page websites.

Therefore i want to ask if i move abroad to Canada will i get a job? Moreover how much will they pay me for my worth?

Sarah Floyd

I think this blog post is great! Good information and good jumping off point for many who are looking to foray into freelance writing. I do think it might be interesting to include for readers the reminder to calculate taxes into one’s starting rate. When thinking of your desired yearly income, it is imperative to take social security and income taxes into consideration. These taxes apply to everyone and freelancers who are self-employed under a 1099 schedule-C, should be aware that these taxes, which are typically paid by an employer, will be personal responsibility. Therefore, when calculating one’s rate, know which tax brackets apply and calculate one’s desired net rate in order to determine the gross rate one should charge.

How Much Should You Expect To Pay For Website Copywriting?

copywriting rates how much should I pay for website copywriting

As a business leader, you know that you and your team face unprecedented challenges in today’s fast-paced business landscape. Digitization, evolving consumer behaviors, and global economic uncertainties are transforming markets.

Staying competitive requires adaptability, innovative strategies, and a deep understanding of these dynamic trends, making running a business more complex.

Your business needs change throughout the year, and as a business leader, you know that you have to adjust to the needs of your clients and your business. One item you must address is copywriting projects, and this means you need to hire a freelance copywriter .

How do you know one writer is better, and how can you evaluate past work to ensure you get the best value for your investment?

This blog post will help you understand what factors to consider when hiring a content writer. As you compare copywriting services, you will need to compare copywriting costs at some point.

  • Website copywriting rates for different copywriting services

Just like when you buy a car, the amount you pay for website content will vary based on different factors.

Let’s take a quick look at what you should expect to pay for different types of content to determine how to get the highest return on your web copywriting investment. Remember, you need to look for the best freelancers who know how to write good copy while also providing other skills to support your business like good communication skills.

1. Blog posts

A blog post is an educational piece of content you publish on your site to answer questions and provide insights to your ideal customers. This content is a great way to build your authority in the industry, improve your visibility in search engines, and drive qualified traffic to your site.

If you want to outsource your blog copywriting to a freelancer, you need to find a writer who will research, write, and optimize your content. Hiring a low-quality blog writer can waste a lot of money because you will pay for content that doesn’t support your business goals or even get found in search engines.

What to consider

Website copywriting prices for blog writing services are everywhere. On the one hand, you can work with a content farm that only writes content, or you can use a white-glove content agency that handles the strategy, defines topics, and optimizes each blog post.

When choosing a blog writer, you should look at several factors that determine how much to pay for a blog post . Here are a few specific factors you should check when comparing different blog writing rates:

  • Experience level : A novice writer might charge less than a seasoned professional with more years of experience. However, more experienced writers will likely produce higher-quality work and require less editing and oversight. Investing in a writer with relevant experience could yield better results if your business requires complex, industry-specific content.
  • Specialization : Some writers specialize in specific industries or types of content. These writers may charge more for those types of content, but their specialized knowledge can lead to more accurate and compelling blog posts. For instance, a writer specializing in medical content may charge more than a generalist, but their expertise could produce more effective content for healthcare businesses.
  • Turnaround time : Faster turnaround times often come at a premium. If you need content urgently, you may need to pay more.
  • Research intensity : The depth of research required for a blog post can significantly impact the cost of content writing. A post that requires extensive technical research or interviews will typically cost more than a straightforward opinion piece or summary of existing information.

2. website content copywriting.

Professional copywriting services provide the expertise to craft persuasive and SEO-optimized copy for key website pages. They can create a captivating homepage that makes a strong first impression, an About page that effectively communicates your brand story and values, and Service pages that clearly outline your offerings and their benefits.

By ensuring your website content aligns with your brand and resonates with your target audience, these services can bo your online presence and drive business growth.

Writing a homepage, services page, or about page are key elements of any copywriting project. Here are some factors to consider as you look for a copywriter to help you write content for your website pages.

  • SEO skills : A writer with solid SEO skills might charge more, but their content is more likely to rank highly in search engine results, driving more traffic to your site. This is particularly important if your goal is to attract new customers or readers through organic search.
  • Understanding of persuasive techniques : A good website content copywriter uses persuasive techniques, such as social proof, scarcity, and authority, to convince readers to take action. This skill can add value to the copy and influence the writer’s rate.
  • Experience and expertise : Consider the copywriter’s experience level and area of expertise. If they have a proven track record in your industry or in creating website pages like a homepage or other core pages, this will likely result in more effective copy.
  • Understanding of the target audience : A copywriter needs to understand your audience and needs to create compelling lead generation content. They should be adept at researching and incorporating this understanding into the content. For instance, if you’re a SaaS company targeting small businesses, the copywriter should be able to speak to the specific pain points of small business owners.

Typical website content copywriting rates

3. long-form sales copy.

Long-form sales copy is a type of content designed to convince readers to make a purchase or take a specific action. This copy often includes detailed product descriptions, white papers, and case studies.

You will use this content to help your customers move toward sales. Working with a professional to outsource copywriting content can help B2B companies move potential customers toward a sale.

Long-form sales content like case studies and white papers can have a big impact on lead generation and sales for your business. However, writing this content can be difficult and requires a writer who understands the process so your business can publish this content as efficiently as possible.

Long-form sales content is not something you want to farm out to the lowest bidder, because the project fee for this type of content can indicate if a content writer knows how to gather the right information about your business and produce great content that helps drive sales.

Here is a list of factors you should consider when comparing website copywriting rates for long-form sales content.

  • Industry expertise : Long-form sales copy requires an experienced outsourced content copywriter with a deep understanding of the industry, product, or service it’s promoting. A copywriter with specific expertise in your industry may charge more, but their knowledge can result in a more persuasive and accurate copy. For instance, a copywriter specializing in software-as-a-service (SaaS) products may be better suited for creating long-form sales pages for a SaaS business.
  • Experience with long-form sales copy : Writing effective long-form copy is a specific skill. Writers experienced in this area may charge higher rates but are likely to produce more compelling content that drives conversions.
  • Research skills : Detailed product knowledge is key in long-form sales copy. The writer needs to conduct in-depth research about your product or service, your target audience, and your competitors. This may impact their rate.
  • Knowledge of Conversion Rate Optimization : Understanding the principles of Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO) can help the copywriter design a long-form sales page that reads well and effectively converts visitors into customers. Writers with these skills might command higher rates but could provide a higher return on investment.

Typical long-form sales copywriting writing rates

4. landing page copy.

A landing page is a dedicated web page designed to convert visitors into leads or customers. These pages often include persuasive copy and a clear call to action, guiding visitors toward a specific outcome, such as signing up for a newsletter, purchasing a product, or booking a consultation.

You will need to hire a landing page copywriter if you need to beef up your existing website or if you need landing pages to support a Google Ads or Facebook Ads campaign.

Building a landing page is not as simple as just building and publishing a page. You will need to work with a designer to create the visual layout of the page, a developer to help build the page, and a copywriter to write engaging content that fits the format and layout of your page.

Here are a few factors to consider as you look for a website copywriter and compare website copywriting rates for a landing page project.

  • Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO) experience : Creating persuasive copy that encourages visitors to take action is a key skill for landing page copywriting. A copywriter with CRO experience will know how to structure the page and use persuasive techniques to guide visitors toward the desired action, whether signing up for a newsletter or purchasing. They’ll understand how to create a compelling value proposition, use psychological triggers, and build trust with testimonials or social proof.
  • Portfolio and writing style : A copywriter’s portfolio can give you a clear idea of their writing style and the quality of their work. Look for copywriters who create compelling headlines, persuasive body copy, and effective calls to action. For instance, if you’re selling high-end products, you may want a copywriter who can write sophisticated and elegant copy that matches your brand’s tone.
  • SEO knowledge : Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is essential for your landing page to be discovered organically on search engines. A copywriter with strong SEO skills will know how to incorporate relevant keywords naturally into the content, optimize meta tags, and create SEO-friendly URL structures. This expertise can help your landing pages rank higher in search results, potentially driving more traffic to your site.
  • Communication and collaboration : Good communication is crucial when working with a trusted freelance content writer . They should be open to feedback and willing to make revisions as needed. They should also be able to collaborate effectively with your design and marketing teams to ensure the copy aligns with the overall design and marketing strategy. For example, if you’re planning a seasonal campaign, the copywriter should work closely with the design team to ensure the copy and visuals create a cohesive message.

5. lead generation content.

Lead generation content is critical to any website as it helps attract and convert potential customers.

It typically includes downloadable guides, ebooks, and other content to capture visitors’ interest and persuade them to give you their email addresses in return for the desired content.

It is not cheap or easy to build downloadable lead generation content, so you must choose a freelance copywriter with skills and experience in creating this type of content. Here are some factors to consider as you choose between different writers for this need.

  • Experience with long-form content : Writing ebooks and downloadable guides requires creating engaging, comprehensive long-form content. Freelancers with experience in this area can structure such content effectively, maintain reader interest throughout, and embed the right calls to action.
  • SEO skills : Lead generation content should be SEO-optimized to attract organic traffic from search engines. Freelancers should know how to research keywords, use keywords naturally, and follow other SEO best practices.
  • Design collaboration : Ebooks and guides often involve design elements, so a copywriter who can work effectively with designers or has design skills can be a plus. For example, they might have experience providing infographics direction or using design software to create visually appealing layouts.
  • Ability to write persuasively : The ultimate goal of lead generation content is to convince readers to take action, such as providing their email addresses for a download. A copywriter needs persuasive writing skills to motivate these actions. They might demonstrate this ability through previous work on sales pages, fundraising campaigns, or similar projects.

  • How are website copywriting rates structured?

Freelancers in website copywriting typically structure their rates in three ways: cost per word, hourly, or project-based pricing. These models allow copywriters to account for the breadth of their skills and the complexity of the task.

Each pricing model has pros and cons, and different pricing models are more conducive to different projects. Let’s look at the main pricing models you will encounter when you look for different website copywriting rates for your projects.

1. Cost-per-word website copywriting rate

The cost-per-word pricing model is commonly employed by freelance copywriters, particularly for large-scale content creation projects. In this model, the copywriter charges a specific rate for each word written.

For example, a rate could range from $0.10 to $1.00 per word, depending on factors such as the writer’s experience, the content’s complexity, and the required level of research.

This pricing model provides a transparent and straightforward way to estimate costs, but it’s essential to remember that quality and effectiveness should not be sacrificed for the sake of volume. Ultimately, impactful and engaging content is what drives value in copywriting.

Pros of cost-per-word website copywriting rates

The cost-per-word model provides clarity and predictability, making budgeting straightforward for clients. It also allows easy comparison of rates between different copywriters.

This model rewards efficiency and can incentivize the writer to deliver high-quality work quickly to maximize their income.

Cons of cost-per-word website copywriting rates

This model can inadvertently encourage verbosity over substance, as a higher word count leads to higher earnings. It may also devalue the time spent on research, brainstorming, and revisions, which aren’t directly reflected in the final word count.

Furthermore, it can undervalue content that is brief but requires high expertise or creativity.

2. Hourly website copywriting rate

The hourly pricing model is another common method that freelance copywriters use to set their rates. This model is based on the time the copywriter expects to spend on a project, including tasks like research, writing, editing, and client communication.

Rates can vary widely based on the freelancer’s experience, expertise, and efficiency. This model provides fair compensation for the freelancer’s time and effort, but it requires high trust between the client and the freelancer. It’s important for a freelancer to track their time accurately and for the client to understand that quality work can take time.

Pros of hourly website copywriting rates

The hourly model ensures fair compensation for all the time the freelancer invests, including research and editing. It’s flexible for projects where the scope may change or needs to be clarified at the outset, reducing the risk of underquoting.

Cons of hourly website copywriting rates

This model can lead to unpredictability in total project cost, which can be challenging for client budgeting. It also requires trust in the freelancer’s time estimates and efficiency, as a slower writer could end up costing more for the same output.

3. Project-based website copywriting rate

The project-based pricing model involves charging a fixed rate for an entire project, regardless of the hours invested or the number of words written.

This model is popular for larger, well-defined projects such as creating an entire website’s content, writing an eBook or crafting a series of blog posts.

The rate is typically calculated based on the complexity of the project, the freelancer’s experience, and the estimated time investment. This approach lets both parties understand the total cost upfront, providing financial security and facilitating budget planning.

It also encourages efficiency and focuses on the result rather than the time spent.

Pros of project-based website copywriting rates

This model offers clear budgeting as the total cost is known upfront. It focuses on the value of the end product, not the time spent, promoting efficiency. This can be beneficial for complex projects where the scope is well-defined, and revisions are limited.

Cons of project-based website copywriting rates

If the project scope isn’t well-defined, it may lead to disagreements or unexpected additional work. There’s a risk of underestimating the time or effort required, potentially resulting in a lower effective hourly rate for the freelancer. This model might not be suitable for ongoing or open-ended projects.

  • 5 Factors that Influence the Rates of Website Copywriting Projects

Choosing a digital copywriter for your copywriting projects can be challenging. Not only are many copywriters fighting for your attention, but you may also need help understanding the variables and nuances that determine the best writer for your needs.

Many business leaders don’t know what they need to consider when choosing a writer, so they naturally decide based on the rate that a writer will charge them. This is a perfectly understandable way to decide because you can’t factor variables into your decision-making process that you don’t know or understand.

It’s like when you move to a new apartment and must choose a new Internet Service Provider. If you don’t know what bandwidth or upload speeds are, then you don’t know how to evaluate the quality of service. In these cases, you would typically choose an internet service with the lowest price.

Here are a few factors to help you choose a writer and determine the value you will receive from a copywriter you are looking to hire. It’s essential to consider these variables and their rate to choose the best writer for your needs.

1. Writer’s expertise

A writer’s expertise in a specific subject matter significantly impacts their copywriting rates, as deep knowledge can enhance the quality and relevance of the content. Expert writers understand the industry’s nuances, terminology, and audience, enabling them to create compelling, targeted copy that resonates with readers and drives desired outcomes.

They can often produce work more efficiently, reducing the time spent on research. While their rates may be higher, the potential return on investment in engagement, conversion, and customer retention can justify the additional cost.

Therefore, when budgeting for copywriting services, business owners should consider the value of subject matter expertise.

2. Required services

The range of services a writer requires can greatly influence their copywriting rates. Beyond simply writing, tasks may include research, SEO optimization, keyword integration, editing, proofreading, and content strategy development.

If a project involves complex topics, extensive interviews, or the creation of graphics and multimedia content. This is due to the additional time, effort, and skills needed to perform these tasks.

Therefore, when business owners plan to hire a freelance writer, they should clearly define their requirements and understand that the breadth and depth of services required will directly impact the writer’s rates.

3. Project scope

The scope of a project significantly impacts a freelancer’s copywriting rates. The project’s size, complexity, and duration are all factors to consider. A single blog post or product description will cost less than a comprehensive website rewrite or a series of long-form articles.

Additionally, if the project requires a quick turnaround or involves ongoing work, such as weekly blog posts, the cost may be higher due to the commitment and time pressure involved.

Therefore, business owners should clearly understand their project’s scope when hiring a freelancer , as it will significantly determine the writer’s rates.

4. Turnaround time

The turnaround time is another critical factor influencing a freelancer’s copywriting rates. If a business owner needs content quickly, they should expect to pay a premium for expedited delivery.

This is because a tight deadline often requires the writer to prioritize this project over others, work extra hours, or even during weekends or holidays to meet the deadline. The urgency also limits the time for extensive research or revisions, increasing the challenge of the project.

Therefore, business owners planning to hire a freelance writer should remember that requiring a fast turnaround time can significantly affect the copywriting rates.

5. Industry knowledge

A writer’s industry knowledge significantly impacts their copywriting rates, particularly in specialized industries such as technology, healthcare, finance, or the law. Freelance writers with a deep understanding of these fields can command higher rates because they bring the expertise and insight that generalist writers may need to possess.

Their familiarity with industry jargon, understanding of complex concepts, and awareness of the target audience’s needs and concerns add immense value to the content. They can craft compelling, engaging, and accurate copy that rates may be higher, resonates with readers, and drives conversions, which is ultimately the goal of copywriting.

For instance, a technology company may need a copywriter with a solid understanding of software development, while a healthcare organization might require someone familiar with medical terminology and regulations. Similarly, a law firm would benefit from a writer who understands legal terms and can write persuasively for potential clients.

Therefore, business owners should consider the industry-specific expertise of a freelance writer when assessing copywriting rates, as it can significantly enhance the effectiveness of their content.

  • Still on the fence about hiring a copywriter?

Understanding the factors affecting copywriting rates is crucial for businesses planning to invest in quality content. Rates will vary based on a writer’s expertise, required services, project scope, turnaround time, and industry knowledge. By considering these elements, you can make informed decisions and get the best value for your investment.

What factors should I consider when comparing website copywriting rates?

When comparing rates, consider factors like the writer’s experience, portfolio, turnaround time, project scope, revisions included, and the level of research or SEO expertise required.

Is it better to choose a website copywriter with the lowest rates?

While cost is a factor, quality and expertise should also be prioritized. A skilled copywriter may charge higher rates but can deliver more effective and engaging content, leading to better results.

Can I negotiate website copywriting rates with a freelancer or agency?

It’s worth discussing rates, especially for larger projects. However, be mindful that professional copywriters have set rates based on their expertise and value they provide.

This is a fantastic perspective on freelance pricing! As a freelance copywriter myself, I find that business owners often cringe at the prices because they’re looking at the dollar amount vs. the value. A $500 blog can draw thousands of new visitors and millions in sales. Thank you for making it so digestible.

Now, you know the estimated cost of content writing in 2023 but do you know which factors come together to determine the cost? Let’s learn about factors that determine the cost of content writing across the world.

Content creation in 2023: Cost factors

Experience .

Experience brings expertise and expertise comes at a price. Bigger the experience of the content creator in question, the higher the content creation price will be. Hiring less experienced content creators will help you save some bucks but it will also bring down the quality.

Upreports always recommend hiring experienced professionals in 2023 since they have a deep understanding of best practices in content creation.

Content size & time

Want to create a 3-minute corporate video or a blog of 2000 words? Be prepared to shell out more. Content creators charge according to the length of content in question and how many hours will go into creating it. If your content piece will require a lot of research time, the cost will go up.

A 60-90 second video will be perfect to attract & engage customers. When it comes to A blog, something around 1200 words will be great.

content creation services prices

Content creator type

Content creators work alone, in-house, and in teams. Those who work alone are called freelancers. While it is quite difficult to find the right freelancer, businesses hire them because they charge less.

Content agencies (like us) are home to content creators who work together to help businesses with everything content. The best part of hiring agencies for content creation is that they bring professionalism to the table by charging a little extra in terms of cost.

Some businesses choose to hire an in-house content team but this is an expensive affair.

content creation services prices

Content-type

One of the major factors that determine the cost of content creation is which type of content you want. Here are the most popular content types:

  • Creative
  • Promotional
  • Informative

Creative content is the most expensive since it requires a lot of time in conceptualization, planning, and creation. Promotional content is comparatively cheaper unless it’s in video format.

Talent location

If you hire a team or freelancer from developed countries like the USA and UK, then, be prepared to pay more in compensation. That’s because the cost of living and overhead costs in such countries are higher. The same seeps into your pricing.

If you hire a content team from developing countries like India, they will charge you less in comparison. The location-based cost gap is usually around 40% and a major reason why businesses hire favor offshore content creation services.

Phew.

We are almost done with our content creation cost list and guide. Let’s wrap up by sharing a tip to save big on content.

Saving with package content deal

Understanding the Factors That Determine Website content writing Charges

Website content writing is a critical aspect of establishing an online presence. IT not only provides valuable information to visitors but also helps in improving search engine rankings. Many businesses and individuals hire professional content writers to create engaging and high-quality content for their websites.

However, Website content writing charges vary depending on various factors. IT is essential to understand these factors and their influence on the pricing structure to make an informed decision while hiring a content writer.

1. Complexity of the content

The complexity of the content plays a significant role in determining the charges. Some topics require extensive research, specialized knowledge, and technical expertise. Such content usually involves a higher level of effort, which translates into higher charges. On the other hand, generic and straightforward topics may be priced comparatively lower.

For example, writing a technical whitepaper or an in-depth analysis about a complex subject would command a higher cost compared to a blog post discussing general tips or common topics.

2. Length of the content

The length of the content is another crucial factor in determining the charges. content writers usually charge on a per word or per hour basis. Longer articles or pages will require more effort and time to write, resulting in higher charges.

However, IT is important to maintain a balance between quantity and quality. Longer content may not always guarantee better engagement if the quality is compromised. Hiring an experienced content writer who can create relevant and concise content while maintaining the length can be a cost-effective choice.

3. Required Expertise

The level of expertise and experience required for writing the content also influences the charges. Writers with specialized knowledge or expertise in a particular field may charge more. For instance, creating content related to medical or legal topics requires a deep understanding and expertise in those fields, therefore commanding higher rates.

On the other hand, general topics that do not require specific expertise can be handled by content writers who charge comparatively lower rates. In such cases, the focus is more on effective writing skills rather than subject matter expertise.

4. Research and Preparation

Before writing any content , research and preparation are crucial. This process involves gathering relevant information, understanding the target audience, and aligning the content with the Website ‘s goals and objectives. The effort and time spent in research and preparation are key factors in determining the charges.

A well-prepared content writer will invest time in understanding the target audience, conducting keyword research, analyzing competitors, and ensuring that the content aligns with the client’s requirements. Charges may vary depending on the extent of research and preparation required for a particular project.

5. content Type and Format

The type and format of the content also influence the charges. writing content for different formats such as blogs, web pages, press releases, product descriptions, or social media posts require different skills and approaches. Moreover, incorporating elements like SEO optimization, engaging headlines, and meta description adds complexity to the task.

content writers who specialize in specific formats or offer additional services like SEO optimization may charge higher rates. The content type and format should align with the goals of the Website and its target audience, ensuring maximum impact and engagement.

Understanding the factors that determine Website content writing charges is essential to make informed decisions while hiring a content writer. Factors such as complexity of the content , length of the content , required expertise, research and preparation, and content type and format play significant roles in influencing the pricing structure.

IT is crucial to strike a balance between quality and budget while selecting a content writer. Considering the specific requirements of your Website and target audience will help you make the right choice and ensure that you receive high-quality content that fulfills your objectives.

Q1. How much should I expect to pay for Website content writing ?

The pricing for Website content writing varies depending on several factors such as complexity, length, expertise required, research, and content type. IT is best to discuss your specific requirements with content writers and request quotes to get an idea of the charges.

Q2. Are higher-priced content writers always better?

Higher pricing doesn’t always guarantee better content . IT is essential to evaluate the content writer’s portfolio and expertise to ensure a good fit for your requirements. Independent content writers or agencies that offer competitive prices without compromising on quality can be a valuable choice.

Q3. Should I hire a content writer with specialized knowledge?

Hiring a content writer with specialized knowledge may be necessary for certain topics or industries. However, for general content or topics, writers with excellent writing skills and an understanding of effective content creation can also deliver high-quality content at affordable prices.

Q4. How can I ensure that the content meets my requirements?

Communicating your requirements clearly to the content writer is crucial. Provide detailed guidelines, examples, and any specific instructions to ensure the content meets your expectations. Regular communication and feedback during the content creation process can also help align the content with your requirements.

Remember, investing in high-quality Website content is an investment in the success of your online presence. The content should be engaging, informative, and optimized for search engines, making IT worth considering professional Website content writing services.

Website Copywriting Rates: How Much Should You Pay?

You have several website copywriting proposals sitting in your inbox. Each proposal comes with an important figure:

The website copywriting rate.

But wait … why do they vary so widely? Should you go with the highest or the lowest rate? Is each copywriter offering the same thing?

All answers are provided here. Keep reading to learn:

  • What website copywriting services include
  • Why you should be wary of ‘cheap’ copywriting
  • The average website copywriting rates
  • The different elements factored into pricing
  • Whether or not you need a full copywriting service

Use this knowledge to make a wise investment that results in sensational content for your website project.

What counts as ‘website copywriting’?

Website copywriting includes:

  • Website pages
  • Landing pages
  • Product descriptions
  • Case studies
  • Testimonials
  • SEO content

Some copywriters will specialise in a certain type of content for websites, such as product descriptions or landing pages. Others will do the whole shebang.

Think carefully about what your website project needs before asking for quotes. If your copywriter has the full picture, it will help them plan and price more efficiently, saving you both time and energy.

You'll need a good brief before you can ask about the figures ( check your brief isn't missing these five things before sending ).

If you’re not sure what you need, talk it through with your copywriter. Their fresh perspective can unearth ideas you might not have considered.

Is website copywriting expensive?

Writing content for websites is a skilled job. It requires experience, creativity, research and commercial awareness to write persuasive copy.

Some companies spend tens of thousands on content for websites.Because it pays for itself (and then some).

Want high conversion rates? You need compelling words to complement your gorgeous web design. Yes, those words likely come with a higher price tag. It’s not that they’re expensive. You’re simply paying what they're worth.

Whereas ‘cheap’ copy could do more harm than good, impacting your brand image, reputation and, ultimately, your bottom line.

Truth is, the cost is subjective, dependent on the value placed on it and the return generated.

Let’s look at the average website copywriting rates to give you an idea of what’s considered ‘cheap’ and ‘expensive’.

What are the average website copywriting rates?

Some copywriters charge day rates for written website content. This covers 7-8 hours of work per day. It makes billing simple, giving the client a better grasp of their budget and projected costs.

The average day rate for website copywriting in 2020 was £379 .

Procopywriters also found that:

  • senior copywriters charge between £800 – £2000+ per day
  • junior copywriters start at around £250 per day

For comparison, the average day rate for HR consultancy is £500 .

74% of copywriters charge per project. They might calculate this using their day rate or a set fee per web page.

Or they might provide website copywriting packages, with various fixed rates depending on the service required.

Another variation of this is a retainer . The client pays a monthly sum for a pre-agreed period.

Copywriting retainers can start from anywhere between £150 to £20,000+ per month.

All website copywriting rates are subject to rise and fall depending on the copywriter’s experience, expertise, location and the type of client they’re serving (they may offer a discount for a charity or startup).

Note that landing pages can cost more than standard web pages. That’s because they tend to have higher conversion potential.

What goes into website copywriting?

Get to know all the skills, work and tools involved in website copywriting services.

You’ll be in a much stronger position when you understand the context behind the rates provided. It’ll help you choose the right copywriter and service for your website project.

Website copywriting services can include:

Research : a copywriter may spend several hours interviewing you (often known as an insight or discovery session) to understand your business, customers, brand, tone of voice and long-term goals. They may also conduct market or competitor research.

Planning and strategy : if the project lacks a structure, a copywriter may use their time to create a website content plan. They might also develop a landing page strategy to support marketing campaigns.

Tone of voice (TOV) guidelines : if a brand lacks a defined tone of voice, a copywriter may assist by creating TOV guidelines. A strong and clearly defined voice brings a brand’s personality to life, differentiating it from the crowd and giving clients, staff and stakeholders something to align to. It can make or break a project and support future copywriting endeavours.

Audience research : Talking to or researching your audience directly is key to understanding the voice of the customer - something you’ll want to reflect on your site to entice engagement.  A copywriter may also create audience personas to support more targeted website content.

Project management: from sending emails and handling revisions to liaising with website developers, most website copywriting projects require a degree of project management.

Interviews: a copywriter may interview employees, clients or other stakeholders to grasp more technical aspects of a client’s business.

Creativity: it takes brainpower and time to create compelling taglines, product names, headlines and copy.

Variants: a client may ask for two or more variations of the same page (like a homepage) for A/B testing or simply because they want more than one option.

Editing and proofreading: two or three rounds of edits are usually included in website copywriting services. A copywriter may stipulate in their contract that they will charge extra for any additional edits.

SEO : a client may ask for keyword research and/or SEO copywriting to drive traffic and boost rankings. A copywriter may also use paid tools to further optimise the website content.

This list is not exhaustive. But it highlights the many different services involved in the website copywriting process.

A copywriter should break down what services are included in their proposal. If you’re ever in doubt, give them a call.

The key to a wise copywriting investment?

Is trust and a clear brief.

Trust that the website copywriting rate you’re given reflects the services on offer. That the content provided will help you delight and dazzle your visitors so you can smash your marketing goals.

And a clear brief that defines success on terms both you and the writer understand and can achieve.

Use what you’ve learnt today to find a copywriter you can trust, who will make your business irresistible with the right words.

One final note: when searching for website copywriting services, it’s useful to see examples of a copywriter’s previous work.

Content Writing Rates in 2023 (Per Word, Per Project, Per Hour)

Are you content writing rates too low? Most writers charge too little. If you want to make more money from your writing skills, start here.

If you want to raise your content writing rates, but you are afraid that they may be too high or too low, I have good news.

In this article, you will learn:

  • The seven factors that define your content writing rates (it's not just your experience)
  • How much you could be charging (it’s probably more than you currently do)
  • How you should charge your clients (hint: it’s not per word)

Let's get started.

How to Define Your Content Writing Rates

Writing experience.

Experience, or lack thereof, plays a key role in your content writing rates. The more experienced you are, the more you can earn, and vice-versa.

This rule applies to writing as to any other skill. As  your writing skills improve , your content will improve likewise.

Salary comparison site  Payscale , shows the way rates change for US-based freelance writers according to their experience:

  • Beginners  with  less than a year  worth of experience  earn an average of $16 an hour .
  • Early-career writers with  one to four years  of experience make  $20 per hour .
  • Intermediate  writers with  five to nine years  of experience  earn, on average, $25.50 per hour .
  • Experienced  writers with  more than ten years   earn $34 per hour on average —those with  20+ years make an average of $49 per hour .

freelance-writing-rates-experience-rates.jpg

Clearvoice shows a similar relationship between experience and rates, with most beginner and intermediate writers charging between $0.01 to $0.50 per word, and “professional” and expert writers charging from $0.50 to more than $1.00.

content-writing-rates-clearvoice-experience.jpg

If you’re just starting, I recommend  starting with $0.10 per word . This is only a bare-minimum suggestion; I started charging $0.20 per word because I had experienced writing and doing marketing.

The complexity of the work required also affects your content writing rates. Some of the factors that define a work’s complexity include:

  • Research : The more research your content requires, the more time it will take you to create it.
  • Interviews : These take time, especially if you have to research the interviewee and the right questions to ask.
  • Quotes : This involves finding the right people to quote, emailing them, editing the answers, and adding them to your content.
  • Graphic design : Creating graphics is a separate skill cost more. If you have to use a tool like Adobe Photoshop or Canva, you also deserve a higher rate.

In every case, you should compute the complexity in your rate calculation and increase them accordingly.

These tasks don’t affect your rate because they require more time; that’s irrelevant to your client. What matters is that  they add value to your content . As you will see later on, you want to charge based on value, not time.

If you want to increase your rates fast, take research seriously. The more you have to do to write a piece, the more you can charge. It's a small effort that can increase your profits significantly.

Technicality

Complex content based on technical concepts and ideas—ideas that require time to explain—will increase your content writing rates.

Unlike content writing, which you can easily learn in a few months, technical writing is a skill of its own. It requires understanding complex concepts, breaking them down, and explaining them to less technically-apt crowds.

Some technical fields that affect the rates positively include:

  • Electricity

If you have technical skills, make sure to leverage them in your career.

In theory, your location shouldn’t be a factor in your content writing rates. Whether you are Malaysian, Indian, American, or Brazilian doesn’t matter; what matters is that you  write great content .

Sadly, this fact doesn’t apply for many writers, either because:

  • They think they can’t command higher rates from economically-underdeveloped countries, or because;
  • The companies that hire them think they can only pay high rates to writers from economically-developed countries.

Costs of living do affect wages. For example,  Buffer , a fully remote software company, uses location as one factor in their salary calculator.

content-writing-rates-buffer.jpg

This mostly affects writers working as employees. But when you are a freelancer, your location is secondary because your clients hire you for your services.

You can choose to let your location affect your rates, but it’s not necessary. If a client ever tries to lower your rates due to your location, consider that client gone. That should never be a topic of discussion, just as your age, gender, or skin color.

If your location or nationality ever becomes a topic of discussion, clarify that it's not. All that your client should care about is your content's quality. If you can deliver on your promise, then there's nothing to discuss. Don't let your clients bully you into lowering your costs due to it.

Content Type

There is a long list of content types writers can create:

  • Ebooks and white papers
  • Video and webinar scripts
  • Social media content
  • Sales letters

Content types like blog posts and social media content tend to be cheaper as they are less complex. They are also the farthest to the sale, which downgrades their importance.

Emails, ebooks, and sales letters, in contrast, play a greater role in sales. This increases their market value significantly.

As a rule of thumb, the more complicated the content type, and the closest it is to a sale, the higher your content writing rates.

If you are a beginner, start with blog posts, but try to move up to the other sales-focused content types as soon as possible.

Client Relationship

There are two types of client relationships you can have:

  • Direct : The client works with you without any intermediaries. They either contact you because they want to work with you, or you contacted them and hired you.
  • Indirect : The client uses an intermediary to hire you. That’s the case of freelance marketplaces, gig sites, agencies, and content mills.

The benefits of using an intermediary like Upwork or Fiverr is that a freelance content writer can focus on their work and not on client acquisition. The problem is that:

  • They take a fee, lowering your profit margins.
  • They incentivize a race to the bottom between writers—clients focus on costs and not quality—lowering your margins even further.

That’s not to say there are no benefits to these companies. New freelance writers can benefit by giving them experience and a client base quickly, but they shouldn't be part of your business strategy as they are not sustainable.

Working directly with clients allows you to command higher rates . You become an equal in the relationship with your client, even if you are the one reaching out to them. What's more, you can get repeat work and referrals, both highly profitable business tactics.

If you are starting, you can use Upwork and other freelance sites. But as soon as possible, aim to  start your writing site  and attract clients there through SEO and email outreach.

The audience to which a writer works for plays an essential role in their content writing rates. Broadly speaking, we can segment an audience into two groups:

  • Beginners : People who have little experience or knowledge for a given topic.
  • Advanced : People who have experience and knowledge.

More technical and experienced audiences require more expertise. The more expertise you have, the scarcer your skills, and thus, the higher your rates.

If all you write is “ beginner guides ” or “ 101 tutorials ,” and you wonder why you can’t make more money, it’s your audience. Aim to write for advanced audiences, and you will command higher rates.

To write for advanced audiences, specialize in one industry. The more you write, the more you will learn, and the easier it will be two cover advanced topics.

Does Gender Affect Rates?

Sexism is an ever-lasting factor in any wage-related discussion. In theory, you would expect that female freelance writers had lower rates than men as it happens in almost every industry.

As surprising as this may seem, a  ClearVoice  survey found  women charge an average of 11.7% more per word and 8.3% more per hour .

The company doesn’t explain why this happens, but it’s a shocking fact nonetheless.

How Much Can You Expect to Earn?

We could talk a lot about how much you could charge and how much you deserve to make, but that would be nothing but fluff.

Let’s look at what actual content writers make in real life and what you can expect to make.

The salaries I show below apply mostly to content writers who work as employees. Still, you can use the data in  your freelance writing business . After all, these are market-based prices.

Content Writer Salary

Payscale  shows that US-based freelance writers  make an average of $24.22 . The lowest 10% of writers charge as little as $12.02, while the highest 10% charges above $63.22.

content-writing-rates-payscale-content-writers.jpg

The average annual salary is  $39,555 . The lowest 10% generate $15,000, while the highest 10% make $76,000. Since the lowest 10% makes less than minimum wage, we can assume that these prices are for part-time workers, and vice-versa with the highest-paid writers.

Taking bonuses, profit-sharing, and commissions in place, the total pay ranges between  $24k to $117k . I have never heard of these bonuses in freelance content writing, but that can be something to consider in your calculations.

Ziprecruiter shows the  average annual salary is $63,213 , and ranges go from $25,000 (25th percentile) to $75,000 (75th percentile).

Ziprecruiter shows the average rate is 25% higher than Payscale's. However, that’s taking the average, which includes the outliers. The distribution shows a closer number to Payscale’s, with most rates being closer to the $25 per hour range.

Content Writer Hourly Rate

As a comparison,  Payscale  shows that US-based  freelance copywriters make an average of $29.29 per hour , with prices ranging between $14.57 to $72.72.

content-writing-rates-payscale-copywriters.jpg

On the other hand,  Payscale  shows that  freelance editors make an average of $25.04 per hour , with rates ranging from $12.51 to $65.64.

content-writing-rates-payscale-editors.jpg

Payscale shows little difference between freelance content writers and editors, with the former making 80 cents less than the latter.

Unsurprisingly,  copywriters make 20% more than both content writers and editors .

content-writing-rates-copywriters-earning-more.jpg

As a point of reference, Payscale data from freelance content writers from several countries, including:

  • Australia : The average hourly rate is AU$32.50 (U$S23.94).
  • Canada : The average hourly rate is C$24.63 (U$S18.79).
  • United Kingdom : The average hourly rate is £20 (U$S26.70).

This data shows that  Australian content writers make the same as their American  counterparts, while  Canadians make 22% less than Americans . On the other hand, the  British make 10% more than Americans .

writing-rates-across-countries.jpg

Ziprecruiter  shows the average hourly rate for US-based freelance content writers is  $30 per hour .

Breaking the data further, we can see:

  • 18% of writers make between $5.29 to $11.78. (The company states these writers are the exception, not the rule.)
  • 12% make between $11.78 and $18.27.
  • 16% make between $18.27 and $24.76.
  • 20% make between $24.76 and $31.25 .
  • 14% make between $31.25 and $37.74.
  • 8% make between $37.74 and $44.23. (The company states these rates and the following ones are the exceptions, not the rule.)
  • The final 8% make between $44.23 to $76.68.

What Is a Good Hourly Rate for a Freelance Writer

The question you may be asking yourself is, " what's a good hourly rate I could charge my clients? "

If you work in the US, or for US-based companies, then your rates could be anywhere from $15 to $30 per hour. Remember to adjust them based on to the factors described at the beginning. For example, if you don't have any writing experience, then this will affect your rates. The same applies to the content types you specialize in, your client relationship, and more.

If you work for companies that aren't located in any of the countries mentioned above, consider lowering or increasing your rates accordingly.

Freelance Writing Rates per Word

Clearvoice  data shows that freelance content writers make the following per word:

  • 14% of writers make between $0.01 to $0.10.
  • 18% make between $0.11 to $0.25.
  • 18% make between $0.26 to $0.50.
  • 13% make between $0.51 to $0.75.
  • 25% make between $0.76 to $1.00.

12% of writers surveyed didn’t indicate their per-word fee because they didn’t use it as a pricing method (smart people, I’d say).

clearvoice-data-freelance-writing-rates-per-word.jpg

Clearvoice data is harder to compare with the previous one as I can’t translate the per-word pricing to per-hour or yearly wages.

Still, it shows that a quarter of writers charge high rates, and another quarter charge from low to medium rates.

Overall, Clearvoice differs the most from the other two sites but offers interesting data.

How to Charge: Per Word, Per Project, or Per Hour?

So far, we covered the factors that affect your rates and the market values for your writing services. The last point we need to discuss is the way you can charge your clients.

There are three ways freelancers can charge their clients:

  • Per project

Each of these three methods has its advantages and disadvantages, which deserve a discussion of their own.

Let’s take a look at each of these three pricing methods so we can then define which one is the best for you.

There are other pricing methods, like retainers, value-based, and profit-sharing, but these are more advanced and don't even apply for writers and these three methods.

Charge Per Word

  • Ideal for beginners  who want a simple pricing method. At an early stage, your clients may not trust you due to your small or nonexistent writing portfolio. By charging per word, you promise the client that you charge by performance.
  • Your clients get a clear cost-benefit relationship . They can lower their costs by reducing your word volume, and they will not get any surprises in their bill.
  • Your clients can easily compare you  and make a cost-based decision. If your price is low or competitive for your quality, they will make an easy decision.
  • There’s a blurred line between cost and benefit . What’s the difference between a $0.20-per-word writer and a $0.30-per-word one? Some factors correlate with higher fees, as shown before, but none explain causation. Consequently, with per-word pricing, you can end up undercharging your clients.
  • The more edits, research, interviews  you have to do,  the less you earn . You can override this issue by increasing your price per word accordingly.
  • You focus on words, not output —that is, quality content.

Conclusion : Per-word pricing is ideal for a new freelance content writer. It’s what I used, and it helped me get started.

As you progress in your career, you want to switch to any of the other two methods. Remember: your clients want quality content and results, not words on a page.

Charge Per Project

Per-project pricing means you charge a flat fee for a predefined type of content—something that’s called the “ scope ” of the project. For example, my per-project fee starts at $500 per article for 1,500 words. That's the scope of my services for articles; more complex projects cost more.

  • You focus on the output , not on the words you write.
  • Ideal if you offer more than content . For example, you could add promotional, editing, or design services to your services and increase your average sale value.
  • The client can’t see what they get clearly . They may discuss the reason why you charge what you charge. They may also want changes in your offer to lower their costs.
  • Scope creep . You can end up offering more than you get paid for either because you didn't think your offer well or because your client pushed you to add more services to it.

Conclusion : Per-project pricing is what I and most  professional content creators  use. Once you know the time it takes you to create content, you can define a project fee that guarantees a healthy margin and a high hourly rate.

Charge Per Hour

  • You maximize your value per hour , if you are efficient. You can use a  calculator  to find your ideal hourly rate.
  • Clients may worry you will overcharge them . They will discuss and negotiate every little task you do to minimize their  content marketing costs . If you can’t explain the time you spend creating your content, you can get in trouble with your client.
  • You must be efficient ; otherwise, you risk hurting your client relationship.

Conclusion : Hourly rates aren’t standard among freelance content writers as most spend a similar amount of time per content.

After a while, you get a feeling of the time it takes you to create, say, an article, ebook, or email sequence and use a per-project fee based on your hourly rate.

Hourly rates are better suited when you offer a monthly retainer. Since I don’t cover this one, then I’d steer away from hourly rates.

Define Your Content Writing Rates

If you are looking to define your content writing rates, then here’s what you need to know:

  • The more experienced you are, the more you focus on content close to sales (like copywriting and ebooks), and the more complex the project, the more you can charge.
  • Aim to work outside freelance marketplaces; develop your writing site, and attract clients there. Focus on building relationships with your clients so you can get repeat and referral work.
  • Per-project fees are better than per-word. Per-hour pricing isn’t common, although you can use it to base your project fees.
  • English Native speakers from countries like the US and Australia make an average of $25 per hour, while Canadians make 22% less than them, and British writers make 10% more. If you live outside these countries, you can adapt your fees accordingly. But remember, your location shouldn't be the only factor you take in your calculations. What matters is your content quality, not where you live.

These writing rates are only a point of reference. If you can develop your brand and provide a unique, high-value service to your clients, you can charge as much as you want.

Social and digital marketing offers significant opportunities to businesses with lower costs, improved brand awareness and increased sales.

“Good first impressions… are good for business.”

When you search LinkedIn for “content writers,” you’re bound to come across a wide range of professionals.

Some content writers, for example, write social networking sites copy for small businesses, while many others write press resources for insurance companies.

Some content writers also write a long-form editorial for glamorous magazines, whereas others write screenplays for their own content marketing, such as a podcast or videos.

So, what exactly is going on here…? Are among them telling the truth? They are, in fact, all speaking the truth. Content creation can take many forms, but it all boils down to content creation for digital files — and, in our case, for marketing.

Here, we’ll look at what content writing is (hint, hint… I’m doing it right now) and how to take your own content to the next level. In addition, we’ll look at examples of incredible, elevated content writing.

But first, what exactly is content writing?

What exactly is content writing?

The process of creating, editing, and publishing digital content is known as content writing.

Blog ARTICLES, video or podcast scripts, electronic books or research papers, media releases, product category representations, business website or social media copy… and more can be included.

Simply put, content creators are the brand’s storytellers. They convey meaningful, useful, and insightful messages in order to inspire and keep moving an audience to engage, which is usually a final sale.

Content creation is now an essential component of most businesses marketing strategies; in fact, as of TODAY, 70% of advertising agencies actively invest in digital marketing.

This means that the position of a content writer is in greater competition than ever before. However, the role depends largely on the industry and the needs of the business.

Some businesses, for example, may invest significantly in a social media strategy, whereas others prefer to create content in the form of blog posts or e-books.

A content writer is essential in creating high-quality content that symbolizes and strengthens a brand’s voice while trying to attract, engage, and take pleasure in the right audience, regardless of format.

When done correctly, content writing can convert readers into opportunities, and prospects into legitimate clients. So it’s essential, especially for your company’s bottom line that you can consistently produce useful, engaging content.

However, this is harder than it sounds. Let’s look at some of my favorite content writing tips to help you take your content to the next level Write original and unique content that goes above and beyond what you can find online.

However, if you simply copy-and-paste data that already exists online, your piece will never rank — and even if it does, when your audiences catch on (and they will), they will lose brand recognition as an industry authority.

Once I’ve completed my brief summary (which will include roughly 60% of the information I discovered through online research), I’ll fill in the remaining 40% with exceptional, original insights. If I am personally knowledgeable about a topic (as I am about “content writing” because I am a content writer myself), I will fill in the outline with authentic narratives, tips, or subjective examples.

What Factors Impact Content Writing Prices in India?

Nowadays written content has become an essential part of each and every marketing campaign in India. However, the content writing price in India is comparatively less expensive than in the U.K. and the U.S.

In India, there are several elements that affect the charges one has to pay for a piece of content. Let’s look at them one at a time:

1. Word Count

When a business is looking to order some content they must keep word count in mind. The number of words to write is the primary unit that determines the content creation charges.

For example, at Das Writing Services our minimum charge is ₹2.4 per word and the maximum is ₹3.36 per word.

In simple words, the length of the content has an influence on the price of the content in India.

number of words as one of the parameters of content writing price

2. Order Type

It is what it’s like in every business: the more voluminous the order the less you have to pay per word. For example, at Das Writing Services, we charge our clients ₹2.4 per word only if the order is more than 1 lakh words per month; the charges increase to ₹2.64 per word when the order is up to 1 lakh words per month; and ₹3.36 per word when the order is below 10 thousand per month.

3. Content-Type

The digital marketing scenario consists of various types of content, like ranges in a mechanic’s toolbox, which serve various purposes. For example, the most common types of content that marketers use in their digital marketing strategy are blog posts, videos, social media posts, podcasts, infographics, user-generated content, case studies, eBooks, etc.

different content writing services provided by Das Writing Services

Among these, only the user-generated content does not involve cost per se. Otherwise, the cost per content depends on the type as the type dictates the amount of attention it can grab and leave an impact or influence.

Moreover, if a piece of content is written with a specific intention in mind (let’s say you want to increase the conversion rate through blogging) the costs will rise.

4. Experience in the Business

According to Google’s updated search rater guidelines, a search result in the SERP should be according to EEAT standards . The latest addition in the update is the first E in the EEAT. It stands for first-hand “Experience”. Google will prefer creative content more when the topic is written by someone who has first-hand experience on a given subject.

EEAT guidelines to be followed to write rank-worthy website content

Businesses that do not have the expertise to craft compelling content have to hire professional content writing agencies for the job. It is clear that a content writing company that does not have sufficient experience in the field cannot emulate its client’s first-hand experience. They may not help your brand get a high ranking on the SERP.

5. Subject-Matter Experts

Subject Matter Experts have a revered place in the content writing industry. This is due to their ability to create high-quality content that ranks high on the SERP . They support facts and information written within the content with accurate data. It guarantees the engagement of content and the establishment of authoritativeness.

Why subject matter experts charges higher for content writing

How Much is the Freelance Content Writing Charges in India?

First of all, let us face the truth that there is no official source that defines content writing price per word in India. Freelancers charge based on some similar elements discussed before. For example, the charge will go up if the writer is comparatively more experienced or the content has some difficult targets to meet.

Businesses find freelancers from websites like Freelancers.com, Upwork, Fiver, etc. However, you must know how to find the best professional content writers for your business.

How Much is the Content Writing Prices of an Agency in India?

Among numerous content agencies in India, only a few deliver content that actually generates significant ROI for their clients.

If you can connect with a content writing agency you can craft a batch of content at a lower rate compared to an “Expert” freelancer. Moreover, if you can crack a deal with a writing agency that has been operating in this industry for a long time, you can expect serious positive changes in your ROI.

For example, at Das Writing Services, we go the extra mile in each aspect of content creation – starting from competitor research to writing and delivery of content. Das Writing Services not only takes the order and delivers it, but we actually look for what your business needs and suggest the best modification to the order.

For example, content length, on-page and off-page optimisation, technical SEO, etc., need to be done differently to rank for “best tourist agency in Mumbai” and “best tourist agency in Jawahar”. However, this is a simple situation. Our expert content creators can suggest the best course of action depending on the purpose.

We have categorised the average content writing prices that agencies charge in India.

1. Content Writing Charges of Agencies for Blog Posts

2. content writing charges of agencies for website content, 3. content writing charges of agencies for ads.

At Das Writing Prices, our content writing charges per word depending on the volume of the project as mentioned earlier. If you want to dive deeper, do visit the home page. There you can also get a free sample for your business-specific projects. Judge the quality first and then make a decision.

How Much Content Costs In India

How much should you be paying for business content creation?

How much do content writers charge per word in India?

Should you hire freelancers or outsource to a content service-providing company?

Which is the best and most affordable option for your business?

Today, we will answer all these questions for you.

But before we get into that, we have something to share with you –

The total content market size is going to skyrocket up to USD 269.24 billion in the years 2020-2024. Yeah, you read it right. It’s a B for Billion. Converting into INR, this amounts to 1,96,68,92,43,40,000.00.

What does this prove?

This proves that content is the need of the hour for every single business out there. It’s the heart and soul of any marketing campaign .

But not every content is the same:

  • Content for a website home page requires different research and execution than creating a blog content
  • Writing emails requires a whole unique skill set than writing an ebook.
  • Writing content for sales letters requires different copywriting skills than writing for social media

Just like the purpose of different content formats is different, so are the prices to create them.

As Indian marketing is fairly inexpensive compared to the western world, content prices in India are lower compared to the US or the UK. But all business owners, just like you, aren’t aware of this. Most business owners get tricked and end up paying high-end prices for content formats that require less effort.

So what are the most accurate content writing rates in India?

How much does content costs in India?

Don’t get fooled by absurd content costs. Know the legit charges before you actually hire or outsource your content-related work.

Content Writing charges in India depending upon multiple factors might vary from 10 Paise/Word to even 50 Rupees/word from some professional and leading content writers. To help you with choosing the right one, we have written this article.

With a combined experience of over 8 years in the writing industry, we, at Apna Writer, have worked with content writers across the nation.

This has helped us learn a lot about content writing charges in India.

But before we jump onto the money aspect of it, let’s discuss all the factors that affect writing charges in India.

content writing for website charges

Table of Contents

Factors Affecting Content Writing Charges In India

Out of the many factors that might affect the content writing salary in India, we’ve listed the most important ones we have experienced during our stay in this industry:

Is In-Depth Research Required

Sometimes creating a content piece requires rigorous research, just like this article.

A well-researched article can bring you more backlinks, position you as a credible source of information, and can help build your authority in your industry .

If you want to avail the benefits of well-researched content and win over your competition, prices can increase up to 50% than the base price.

Additional Services Along With Creating Content

If you ask your writers to do separate keyword research, complete competitor analysis, creating blog images, etc, you’ll obviously have to pay more.

Untimely Guidelines

Sometimes you may skip some important points that you want your writers to keep a note off.

If you suddenly update your guidelines, it will be an additional task for the writers to go back and include them in their work.

You might have to pay for this as well. So try to be clear with your content goals prior to giving the content order.

Repetitive Revisions

Be clear at the very first meeting about the cost of revisions, as some content service providers will charge you for over 1 or 2 revisions.

Now that you know about the most important factors that affect your content creation costs, let’s answer the next question about freelance writers.

Different Types of Content

As we have shared above, different types of content would have a different cost attached to them. For example, if you will go through our website to check content writing charges for a website, you will find it different from the charges that we take for blog articles.

And, this is the case with the whole industry and different content types require different tones, approaches, experiences, and testing. So, make sure to be ready with all your requirements before you start looking for writers as the cost can vary a lot based on your requirements.

How Freelancing Charges In India Are Defined?

There is no official source defining content writing rates in India. Since freelancing is not a government authorized industry, the rates vary.

Freelancers charge according to their experience and based on the purpose and type of your content requirement.

Based on our experience and many associations with freelancers throughout India, we have created an average chart for content writing prices (per word) in India that freelancers charged in 2020 and they are still charging in 2021:

charges per word in India for freelancers

*The values are based on price per word (in INR)

Here’s why we have defined the prices on a per word basis:

Some writers also charge based on the number of hours it took them to complete the assignment. But that isn’t a favorable option for obvious reasons. You would never know how much time they actually took to complete it.

You can check and analyze various freelance writers, and the prices they charge on websites like Upwork, Freelancer.com, Fiver, among others.

But freelancing comes with its own set of drawbacks. Check out the problems when you hire a freelancer:

  • Lack of commitment: Some freelancers handling your project might not deliver the required content within the promised time. This can delay your schedule, and sometimes it might cause losses.
  • The incapability of handling extensive projects: If you have a huge requirement of blog articles, freelancers might not be capable of fulfilling the volume. Only a well-established content writing company can handle the content of that stature.
  • Compromise on quality: Sometimes freelancers (even the experienced ones) can compromise on the quality of your project. Because of the overload of work, they can hurry the completion process, which results in an inferior quality content piece. This can negatively affect your business brand.

So what is the alternative?

To eradicate these drawbacks and to get top-notch quality content at affordable prices, associate with any of the top content writing companies in India .

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do content writers charge for website content.

The content writers charge bracket depends upon the quality of content you want for your website. From entry-level to expert level, the price bracket for website content varies.

For example, the average price per word charged by content writers in India for entry-level is 0.5 to 0.75 Paisa; it rises to 1.5 to 3.5 Rupees for the intermediate level. For expert-level, it is from 4 to 7 Rupees onwards.

How much does a 500-word article cost in India?

A 500-word article cost depends upon the quality you want from the writers. If you require a basic level article, it will cost you around 250 to 300 Indian Rupees.

If you wish professionalism to reflect in the article, the price will be around 300 to 750 Indian Rupees. But if you want a highly researched and expert level article, the cost can range from 1000 to 2500 Indian Rupees.

Per Word Charges Vs. Per Project Charges

The price range from per word charge and project charge differs drastically. It’s like going to a retail shop and a wholesale shop. If you have a small content requirement, you should opt for a per word option, and it will cost you more than the per-project charge.

But suppose you have a content requirement for the next six to twelve months and want a regular content delivery. In that case, negotiating a comparatively low price per content piece is the ideal option.

Outsourcing Content Vs. Hiring a Team of Writers

There’s a lot of debate about whether a business should hire a team of in-house writers or opt for outsourcing content. The right way to approach this situation is to figure out your budget, content requirement, and resources. Hiring a team requires a good amount of funding and resources for training writers to deliver content tailored to your business.

On the other hand, outsourcing helps you get your desired content without investing a lot of your time and energy most inexpensively.

How much budget should be there for content creation?

The content creation budget depends upon your content marketing plan. If you have a content calendar scheduled for the next six to twelve months, you need to set a higher budget. But if you only want limited content for your business, then a small budget would do great for you.

There should be no specific limit to your content creation budget; If your investment delivers your desired conversions, you would continuously want to invest in high-quality, rewarding content.

How much do content writers charge per month?

An average content writer would charge you around 15,000 to 20,000, but if we increase the experience level and the expertise, the price may vary from 30,000 to 75,000. It all depends on the writer you want for your content and how much work it requires to deliver your desired content.

If you find it costly, you always have the inexpensive way to outsource your content needs to a third-party content writing service provider.

Very Informative article

' src=

This is useful information for content writers. However, in India, sadly people want cheap work and rarely pay us what we deserve.

' src=

That’s largely correct. In India, there is a general lack of awareness about the importance of content in the marketing mix. However, even in the west, there are content writers complaining about low-paying clients. Many western writers seem to be willing to work for low pays on the jobsites like upwork, fiverr, etc. They also seem to complain about writers from our part of the world to be the reason for diminishing their market value.

Only thing is, in the west, since their economy is better and literacy is higher, the problems are not as drastic as in ours. So maybe, its our job to stick to our guns while pricing for our services and not succumb to those ignorant clients who are willing to pay only peanuts for premium content.

Creating effective technical documentation

Author avatar

Effective feature documentation is important in enhancing a user's experience with the feature. Good documentation is like a piece of the puzzle that makes everything click — the key for encouraging feature adoption.

To support you in creating effective technical documentation, this article provides an overview of the core principles of technical writing. It also highlights the best practices for creating clear and accessible documentation. Applying these technical writing principles helps us maintain the high quality of content on MDN. Whether you're documenting your own project or product or contributing to technical content in various settings, you can improve the quality of your work by following these best practices.

Adopt clarity, conciseness, and consistency

These three Cs form the core principles of technical writing. They can take you a long way in producing quality documentation.

For achieving clarity in your writing, apply the following guidelines:

  • Use simple words and clear language. Keep in mind the audience, especially if it includes non-native English speakers.
  • Be clear about who needs to perform the action. Writing in active voice is not strictly required. However, you should use it when you want to be clear about who needs to perform the action. For example, clarify whether a function is triggered by an event or if the user needs to explicitly call the function.
  • Clearly introduce and explain new terms. This helps to lay the foundation for concepts that are covered later in the documentation.
Tip : Replace "it", "this", and "these" with proper nouns if they can refer to more than one thing in the given context.
  • Aim for one idea per sentence to improve readability.
  • Stick to one main idea per paragraph. Each sentence in a paragraph should logically connect to the one before it. Imagine if each sentence in a paragraph was a link in a chain. If you pick up the first link, the other links in the chain should follow, forming a continuous sequence. This is how the sentences should connect to each other, ensuring a seamless flow of a single idea.

Conciseness

Keep sentences short. This automatically increases the readability and clarity of your document. It also helps in quick comprehension. Long sentences can be more challenging to understand quickly due to their complex structures.

Tip : Based on common readability standards, aim for 15-20 words per sentence.

For additional insights on sentence length and readability strategies, see Simple sentences (on https://readabilityguidelines.co.uk ) and Popular readability formulas , including the Flesch-Kincaid index, on Wikipedia.

Consistency

Use the same terminology throughout your documentation to ensure a seamless reader experience. For example, if you start referring to "user agents" as browsers, stick with that term consistently. This avoids confusion that can arise from using words interchangeably, even when they share the same meaning.

Additionally, maintain consistent word casing and follow a uniform formatting style throughout your documentation. These practices not only enhance readability but also contribute to a professional presentation of your documentation.

Organize your content for maximum impact

Apply the same principles for organizing your content as you would for organizing your code: spend some time setting a clear goal and thinking about the desired structure for your documentation. Ensure that each subsection contributes to this goal incrementally.

Start with an introduction

In the introduction, first describe the feature you're documenting. Next, set the context by explaining why learning about the feature would be beneficial to the readers. This can include describing real-life scenarios where the feature can be useful. The more relevance you add to the topic, the easier it will be for readers to understand and engage with the content.

Progress logically

The following questions can help you ensure that your content is progressing logically:

  • Is your document structured to guide readers from foundational concepts to more advanced ones? Are there sections to introduce the " what " to establish a base before delving into the " why " and " how "? Consider whether the document structure mirrors the natural learning path for the topic. Aligning the document's structure with the natural progression of learning helps readers build their knowledge step-by-step and also enhances the overall learning experience.
  • Are there sufficient how-to guides or examples following the conceptual sections?
  • Consider the flow of the content. Is it following a logical sequence — from one sentence to the next, from one paragraph to the next, and from one section to the next? Does each section logically build on the information presented previously, avoiding abrupt jumps or gaps in the content?

Additionally, as you work on the draft, always ask yourself:

  • What reader questions am I addressing with this sentence?
  • Can I add a simplistic or real-life use case to explain this concept?

Include examples

Imagine sitting next to someone as you explain the concepts to them. Preempt their questions and address them in your writing. Use this approach to add as many relevant examples as possible.

When adding examples, don't restrict yourself to only code; include non-code scenarios to demonstrate a feature's utility. This helps readers understand the concepts better and also caters to different learning styles. Consider providing real-world scenarios or use cases to illustrate how the feature or concept applies in practical situations.

Optimize the document structure and length

Evaluate your documentation's structure to ensure it maintains a logical and balanced hierarchy.

  • Ensure that each section and subsection has a clear purpose and sufficient content.
  • Look for instances where a main section contains only one subsection (orphan), such as a single H3 section under an H2 section. This indicates that you need to reorganize your content or make some additions.
  • Check if there are lower-level headings such as H4 . Too many subsections can be overwhelming for readers, making it difficult for them to grasp the information. In such cases, consider presenting the content as a bulleted list instead to help readers retain the key points more effectively. This approach helps to simplify the hierarchy and also contributes to easier navigation.
  • While there should be sufficient content for each section, pay attention to the overall length. If any section becomes too extensive, it can be overwhelming for readers. Split large sections into multiple logical subsections or restructure the content into new sections and subsections. Grouping content into digestible pieces helps maintain focus and improve navigation for readers.

Proofread your writing

One aspect that cannot be stressed enough is the importance of self-reviewing and proofreading what you've written. Whether you're creating a large document or a short paragraph, this step is crucial.

Taking the time to fully review your work will help you identify sections that don't flow well or can be improved for clarity. During self-review, aim to spot and remove redundancy (repetition of ideas without adding value) and repetitiveness (overuse of words or phrases). These refinements will ensure your documentation is clear and coherent and conveys your ideas as intended.

Proofread and then take a break before you review again. Only then submit your work. While spell checkers can flag spelling errors, they might not flag incorrect use of words, such as an unintended use of "he" instead of "the". It's best to take a break and return with fresh eyes to catch any errors you might have missed. Pay close attention to identify inconsistencies in tone, style, tense, or formatting and make the necessary adjustments.

Additional tips

To improve the clarity and accessibility of your documentation, also keep the following guidelines and tips in mind. To go in-depth into any of the topics, feel free to consult our Writing style guide .

  • Bulleted vs numbered lists : Lists, in general, make documentation easier to scan. Use bulleted lists when there is no specific order of the items. Use numbered lists when the steps need to be followed in the specific order. Always include a lead-sentence before beginning a list to provide context.
  • Commas : Use a comma after an introductory clause to improve readability and to clarify the sentence structure. Use a comma to separate items in a list to ensure clarity.
  • Alt text : Always provide an alternative text for the images you add to content. This makes your documentation accessible to people using screen readers. In addition to images, ensure that video and audio files have accompanying descriptive texts.
  • Descriptive link text : Make sure each link text is clear even out of context and clearly indicates where the link leads. Descriptive link texts also help people using screen readers understand the destination of links. For example, use "Read our writing style guide to learn more" instead of "Click here to learn more".
  • Inclusive language : Make your documentation welcoming to everyone. Strive to use words that respect and acknowledge the diversity of your audience.

That's it for this article. I hope you found these tips helpful as a quick refresher on technical writing best practices. Remember that learning how to create effective and easy-to-use documentation is an ongoing process. It starts with understanding your audience and the goals of your documentation. By applying these technical writing principles and tips, you'll certainly be able to enhance the clarity and overall quality of your documentation.

Let me know if you learned something new or if there's any idea that resonated with you. I'd also like to hear if there are any best practices you use in your technical documentation workflow. Share with us on Mastodon or Discord .

Michigan woman accused of stealing $800K in luxury items from rental sites to resell them online

A Michigan woman was arrested on multiple fraud charges in connection with a scheme to steal more than $800,000 in luxury clothing and goods from rental websites, the Justice Department announced Wednesday .

The Justice Department alleged that Brandalene Horn, 42, opened hundreds of accounts on websites designed for women to rent clothing and accessories and then stole items to resell them later on an e-commerce marketplace, defrauding the clothing rental companies.

She stole more than 1,000 items valued at over $823,000 and sold more than $750,000 worth of the stolen items, federal prosecutors allege.

Horn was arrested Wednesday morning in Freeland, Michigan, and charged with one count each of mail fraud, wire fraud and interstate transportation of stolen property, the Justice Department said.

No lawyer for Horn was listed. The U.S. attorney’s office in the Southern District of New York did not immediately reply to a call to inquire about Horn's representation Wednesday evening.

Horn engaged in the scheme for nearly two years, from at least April 2022 to February 2024, the Justice Department said in its release.

During that time, she opened hundreds of accounts across at least three companies that offer subscription-based clothing rental services, according to the Justice Department. Subscribers to those sites can rent and return clothing and accessories, including luxury and designer items.

Instead of returning the rented items, though, Horn kept them and resold them on an e-commerce marketplace, using item photos and descriptions that "substantially matched" those of the companies, the Justice Department alleged. Some of the items were pieces worth thousands of dollars.

When the companies began charging Horn for the stolen items, she disputed credit card charges and canceled her credit and debit card accounts altogether, the Justice Department said.

Thats prompted the companies to flag or close her accounts, but she responded by making even more accounts to continue the scheme, the Justice Department said.

"As alleged, Brandalene Horn perpetrated a lucrative scheme in which she defrauded at least three victim companies, stole hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of luxury and designer items, and then sold those stolen items online," U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said in a statement.

If convicted, Horn could spend up to 50 years in federal prison, according to the Justice Department: 20 years maximum for the mail fraud charge, 20 years maximum for the wire fraud charge and 10 years maximum for the charge of interstate transportation of stolen property.

Adair Police Chief Convicted for Fraud, False Statements, and Firearms Charges

DES MOINES, Iowa – On February 14, 2024, a federal jury in Des Moines convicted Bradley Eugene Wendt, 47, of conspiring to make false statements to the ATF, making false statements to the ATF, and illegal possession of a machine gun.

Since July 2018, Wendt has been the Chief of Police for Adair, Iowa.  He is also the owner of BW Outfitters, a federal firearms licensee in Denison, Iowa. Evidence at trial showed that, between July 2018 and August 2022, Wendt used his position as Chief of Police to obtain machine guns for his own personal use and profit, including to buy machine guns for his own store.

Generally, machine guns made after May 1986 are illegal to transfer and possess.  But, law enforcement agencies can buy machine guns for their official use and authorized dealer can get machine guns to demonstrate to a police department for the department’s future possible purchase.  If a police department wants to purchase or receive a demonstration of a machine gun, it can submit a letter to ATF, referred to as a “law letter,” expressing its need for and interest in the machine gun.

Between July 2018 and August 2022, Wendt wrote nearly 40 law letters, requesting the purchase or demonstration of 90 machine guns for the Adair Police Department.  In the law letters to purchase machine guns for his two-man department, Wendt said he was buying the machine guns for the official use of his department and was not getting the machine guns for resale.  In the law letters requesting demonstrations of machine guns, Wendt said the Adair Police Department wanted a demonstration for the department’s future possible purchase of the requested machine guns.

A jury found that Wendt made false statements in several of these letters, convicting him of conspiracy to make false statements to the ATF and eight counts of making a false statement to the ATF.  Evidence at trial showed that Wendt purchased machine guns for the Adair Police Department, but later resold those machine guns at a personal profit of nearly $80,000.  The evidence also showed Wendt used demonstration law letters to purchase machine guns for his own gun store, BW Outfitters, including a .50 caliber machine gun called a “Ma Deuce,” which he immediately mounted to his personally owned armored Humvee.

Wendt was also convicted of illegal possession of a machine gun, based on his personal possession of a belt-fed, M60 machine gun registered to the Adair Police Department.  Wendt, along with his gun store BW Outfitters, hosted a machine gun shoot in April 2022, where he charged the public to shoot machine guns, including several registered to the Adair Police Department.  The jury found Wendt was not acting within the scope of his official duties when he possessed the M60 machine gun.

Wendt faces up to five years’ prison on the conspiracy count, five years’ prison for each false statement charge, and up to ten years’ prison for illegal possession of a machine gun. Sentencing is scheduled for June 14, 2024, at the United States Courthouse in Des Moines.  A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the United States sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors.

FBI Omaha Special Agent in Charge Eugene Kowel said “In a stark abuse of the position of trust he held, Brad Wendt exploited his position as chief of police to unlawfully obtain and sell guns for his own personal profit. When so many law enforcement officers in our country are working to protect our communities and uphold the law, Brad Wendt did exactly the opposite. The FBI is committed to working with our law enforcement partners to investigate and hold accountable those who violate their oath of office to enrich themselves.”

Kansas City Field Division Special Agent in Charge Bernard Hansen stated “Mr. Wendt was in a position of trust and his egregious behavior betrayed his community he was entrusted to protect.  Wendt was sworn to uphold the law, but instead he abused his authority as the Chief of Police for his own personal benefit.”

United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) made the announcement. “No one relishes seeking criminal prosecution of a law enforcement officer,” stated U.S. Attorney Richard Westphal, “however, with the oath of public service, comes the accountability of putting the public trust at the forefront of this duty. An oath that most officers zealously pursue every day with honor. If an individual law enforcement officer is the exception to this rule, then we should not shirk from holding them accountable. Our thanks to the dedicated work of the investigative ATF and FBI agents, and our hard working trial team.” This case was investigated by ATF and FBI, and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Mikaela Shotwell, Ryan Leemkuil, and Shai Gonzales.
