Case Study Research and Applications: Design and Methods
2023, Beyond Words
This recently published book might add to our understanding of conducting case study research and eventually writing a high-quality case study paper. In general, chapter one defines a case study and when and why a researcher needs to conduct that study. Chapter two suggests ways to formulate a research question, select a case, and ensure rigor for the research. Chapters three and four similarly discuss various data collection procedures and why those procedures need to be done. Chapter five presents practical strategies to do quality data analysis. The last chapter is about tips to report a case study research. Readable vocabulary and supporting figures should help readers (e.g., novice researchers, college or graduate students, and teachers) easily comprehend the persuasive information presented in those six chapters.

This qualitative study delves closely into students' challenges of writing specific sections (i.e., introduction, literature review, and method) of their research proposal and coping strategies to deal with those challenges, specifically in online learning environments amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. Data were garnered from six Indonesian EFL undergraduates taking a research design course at a private university in Central Java, Indonesia. Selected based on the intensity sampling technique, these students were involved in an in-depth semi-structured interview session with the researcher to share their voices on the writing challenges and coping strategies as well as parts of the course they found useful and practical suggestions for class improvement. The data analysis results indicated that writing a good research proposal might be challenging for the research participants, considering the various challenges they experienced when writing sections of their research proposal. Different coping strategies to deal with those challenges, useful parts of the course and suggestions for class improvement were presented and discussed in the discourse of the reviewed literature. The paper ends with some directions for future research.

To date, there have been very few studies that map the major research trends in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts, such as those in Indonesia. To address that gap and to benefit undergraduate and graduate students, EFL researchers, or practitioners looking for a current research topic and theories to frame their studies, this paper reviews the past research studies (n=53) published in four Indonesian national journals to explore Indonesia's EFL research trends in 2020, including research topics, theoretical frameworks, and research methods. The journals were selected because of their focus and scope related to English language teaching and education as well as their rank in Sinta 1 and Sinta 2 (two of the highest levels out of six Sinta levels) of the Indonesian web-based research information system. Based on a holistic review of the articles checked by the peer-debriefing strategy to ensure the review's credibility, the analysis results show that the previous studies mainly explore English teaching strategy and education technology research areas and use fairly old theories as their theoretical framework. As for the research method, most of the studies use a qualitative research method, take place in university settings, and involve university students as their research subjects. The meanings of the analysis results, teaching implications for a research class, and directions for further research are presented.
Journal of Foreign Language Teaching and Learning
The literature has overwhelmingly explained challenges in writing the undergraduate thesis from students' perspectives. Yet, there is a scarcity of research that presents the perspectives of thesis supervisors about the challenges experienced by their EFL students and, at the same time, on possible solutions to solve them. This qualitative study presented two English as a Foreign Language (EFL) lecturers' narratives on challenges EFL students experienced when writing their undergraduate thesis and on solutions to deal with those challenges. The research data was collected through a reflective essay written by the lecturers, who then met in an online synchronous meeting to discuss what they wrote in the essay. While the data analysis communicated various things, the students' challenges in writing their undergraduate thesis were commonly about finding a research topic, writing the literature review, and using various academic vocabulary. In light of the results, possible solutions to solve the challenges, practical recommendations for EFL thesis writing and teaching activities, and guiding questions for further research were presented. This study should benefit EFL thesis supervisors to reflect on their own experiences, find areas for improvement and enhance their thesis supervisory practices. This study also hopes to benefit EFL students who wish to learn practical strategies to progress with their undergraduate thesis.

The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore how the use of learning rounds as a collective practice enhanced professional learning at the district and individual school level as perceived by administrators, principals, and teachers in one low-income rural K-12 public school district located in the eastern United States. The overarching research question in this study asked, how do administrators, principals, and teachers perceive the use of the learning rounds model has improved teaching and learning at the district and individual school level in one rural district located in the eastern United States? The use of organizational learning, adult learning, and communities of practice theories were used as the study’s theoretical foundation. The conceptual framework focused on organizational, learning, and culture-building dimensions as supported in the literature. A purposive sampling involved a maximum variation of administrators, principals, and teachers as part of the study’s sample of participants. The main findings were derived from face-to-face semi-structured interviews, obtained direct observations, and archival data. This case study used Yin’s Five Phase Cycle of Analysis as its primary approach for data analysis. The thematic findings in this study supported crossing boundaries, collaboration as a district-level practice, professional collaboration among and across schools, as well as the benefits and challenges associated with learning rounds. The results obtained in this study showed how K-12 educators may implement learning rounds to advance organizational, learning, and culture-building capacities to improve teaching and learning. Keywords: Adult learning, building trust, boundary spanning, collaborative learning cultures, communities of practice networks, learning rounds, shared and common language, and evidence-based learning.

Automated Writing Evaluation (AWE) programs have emerged as the latest trend in EFL writing classes. AWE programs act as a supplementary to teacher feedback and offer automated suggestions and corrections to students' linguistic errors such as grammar, vocabulary, or mechanics. As there is a need for better recognition of different AWE brands utilized for different levels of students, this research sheds light on identifying six university students’ views of an AWE program, namely ProWritingAid (PWA). The six students are categorized as having high or low writing achievement. This descriptive study delineates the students’ perceptions qualitatively. A semi-structured interview was used to collect the data. The findings suggest the students’ positive views of PWA because it could make class time more effective; it had useful feedback on grammar, vocabulary choices, and mechanics; and it built students‘ self-confidence over their compositions. In addition, for different reasons, t...

This chapter explores fan fiction, defined as stories that reimagine or reinterpret existing stories, characters and universes found in other texts and media, and the informal language learning that reading and writing fan fiction supports. It begins with an overview of fans, fandom, and various fan practices found in online affinity spaces, including fan practices that primarily celebrate media (e.g. fan website design), fan practices that analyze media (e.g. fan publications, online discussions, spoiling), and fan practices that transform or critique media (e.g. fan translation, fanart, fan fiction ).While many of these fan practices have also been found to support informal language learning or the development of other skills and knowledge, it is fan fiction that has received the greatest attention both in popular culture and in educational research. This chapter then offers a crash course overview of different genres of fan fiction and before examining and discussing research which has looked at the informal language learning that occurs through the reading and writing of fan fiction.

The title of Robert Yin’s (2016) book, Qualitative Research from Start to Finish, second edition, aptly summarizes what he intended to accomplish and did. The author’s writing and organizational style made for an enjoyable and engaging read given the subject matter. For the student, teacher, or researcher seeking an in-depth understanding of the entire research process, this book covers it all, including an exhaustive reference list on qualitative studies in varied disciplines. In keeping with his training as a social scientist, Yin incorporated his global research experience and understanding of human behavior to produce a book with something to offer researchers at various levels. I integrated my perspective as a doctorate student with intermediate experience in qualitative and quantitative research, highlighting what I found most useful.

TITLE: Can Learning about History of Science and Nature of Science in a Student-Centred Classroom Change Science Students’ Conception of Science?
KEYWORDS: Nature of Science , History of Science , Philosophy of Science , Reflective Writing , Course Dossier
JOURNAL NAME: Creative Education , Vol.9 No.15 , November 22, 2018
ABSTRACT: Nature of Science (NOS) covers the aim, development, criticism and explanation of science. This study examines the impact that studying philosophy and history of science has on undergraduate students’ views about the NOS. Studying the NOS helps students to understand what science is, how to characterize the nature of its practitioners’ activities, and what is the significance of the whole enterprise. It is shown that having students study scientific concepts through the eyes of philosophers and historical scientists, actively engages them in the process of inquiry and challenges them to increase their understanding of the NOS. This study showed that studying philosophy and history of science in a student-centered classroom had a strong influence on students’ views about the NOS in that many students changed their views about the NOS. Students who did not change their over-all perception gave much clearer expositions of their views.
