Letters to the Editor
Subscriber only, letters to the editor | letters: the office isn’t the only way to make strong relationships and a good career.
There’s more than one way to make work work
I read Jenny Alvermann’s column ( “Confessions of a former remote worker,” Feb. 9) and I was once again puzzled at the insistence that going into the office is key to “strong relationships, promotes clear communication, and creates opportunities for professional growth.” My experience is quite different.
I have worked remotely for 21 years. I will grant that my roles in that span (project manager and program manager in IT infrastructure and software spaces) have lent themselves more to remote work than in-person collaboration. However, my career has progressed nicely in that same span. In fact, my previous and current roles were advertised as 100% remote.
I am an extreme introvert who, it is claimed, “holds meetings for a living.” There is a certain amount of truth to that, but doing my job surrounded by dozens or hundreds of coworkers would wear me out daily in a way that extroverts do not understand.
I engage fully with my colleagues throughout our entire hierarchy and with my counterparts at customers and vendors, all without setting foot in an on-site office or conference room.
There are jobs that cannot be 100% remote and there are people who cannot thrive in a fully remote situation. However, one’s success should never depend on one’s willingness to endure a rush-hour drive to and from work just to be surrounded by coworkers.
Steve Kopischke, Cottage Grove
I even like Taylor Swift, but …
It was another Super Bowl and another great win for Kansas City. I really like Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes, because his father was a pitcher for the Minnesota Twins. I even like Taylor Swift.
But I do not like the Kansas City football team for two reasons. First they beat the Vikings in the Super Bowl, but the second and worst is that they still have a racist nickname, have arrowheads on their helmets, uniforms, and their fans yell American Indian war chants. It is a slam to our Indigenous People. It needs to be changed, like the Washington football and Cleveland baseball teams did. The Atlanta baseball team also must change their nickname.
Gary Thompson, St. Paul
Rich guy gets a pass
The 2024 Super Bowl was a fun game to watch, until one event. As a past educator, I worked tirelessly to end bullying. Imagine my dismay when Travis Kelce , a strong, fierce man, shoved and yelled at an older man — his coach, Andy Reid — enough to make Andy close his eyes and wobble off-balance. Worse, the next day Kelce offered jokes about it, as did Reid. But how could Reid take on Kelce? After all, Kelce is profit for the NFL and himself, in part because of his relationship with Taylor Swift and endorsements.
When society allows people of money and power to escape accountability for acts of bullying, violence, threats, intimidation and lies, we all suffer. Currently politicians and people of wealth and power are often given passes for behavior that we wouldn’t want our children to copy. What if Andy Reid was your father? How would you feel about Kelce then?
Geoffrey Saign, St. Paul
While there is endless debate about what should be done about it, no one can deny that we have a problem with gun violence in our country. With upward of 40,000 deaths/year attributed to firearms, with easy access to weapons of war, with gun ownership totaling 125 guns for every 100 of our citizens, and with mass shootings becoming all-too regular events in our news cycles it is clear that reasonable people and their leaders need to thoughtfully consider what means we have to address this issue.
That is why I find it reprehensible that citizen Donald Trump, in addressing last week’s meeting of the NRA , would find it cause for celebration to say, “In my four years as president, nothing happened … we did nothing.” (Cut to the scene of Nero fiddling while Rome burned.) It is one thing to fail, but quite another to boast about it, and just another reason among many to reject his current bid for power.
John W. Wheeler, Maplewood
There’s no ‘free’ care
A DFL legislator will introduce a bill to ban hospitals from adding interest to delinquent bills. Furthermore, the new law, if passed, would mandate that hospitals provide “free” care for those who cannot pay. Wow. This sounds great.
The DFL solution for unaffordable hospital care, it seems, is to force providers to do the same or more but for less money, as they do with Medicare and Medicaid patients. There is no “free” care or “reduced rate” care, in reality.
The shortfall in hospital revenue is cost-shifted to those of us with private health insurance, or who must pay our own way — or a combination of those two (high deductibles and out-of-pocket expenses).
Neither the DFL nor the GOP are providing solutions that reduce the cost of care for everyone, while maintaining quality of care and access to it. Those solutions exist, but Big Health does not like them.
Dave Racer, Woodbury
Hated too long by too many
I appreciated the article about Egyptian officials saying no to Palestinians . I will say, up front, my allegiance is to Israel because Jewish people have been in my life since the beginning (I am 75 years old). What upsets me about the current war is that at no time have the people in Gaza or their supporters around the world condemned Hamas out loud. Nor have the Palestinians in Gaza turned in the terrorists that belong to Hamas; nor have they offered to aid the Jewish military in digging out the tunnels to help cripple Hamas and perhaps find the innocent Israeli civilians who were kidnapped.
The Palestinian people are surrounded with Arab nations and yet, as Egypt has clearly stated, they are not being encouraged to move into safe places in those countries. Egypt was brave enough to admit they do not want the radical, terrorist Hamas and its followers to bring their beliefs and actions into Egypt. For decades, Israel has been surrounded by people who would prefer all Jewish people be eliminated from the face of the Earth. On Oct. 7, Israel was invaded, their citizens were killed, raped and taken as hostages. I do not like/admire/respect Netanyahu, but my heart and prayers are with the Jewish people who for too long have been hated by too many.

Berkeley Social Sciences launches comprehensive internship program to prepare students for meaningful careers
Berkeley Social Sciences launched a new program recently to better equip students for successful careers by giving them real-world experiences. The Social Sciences Career Readiness Internship Program (SSCRIP) prepares students for a variety of professions by offering skills workshops, personalized coaching, internship placement assistance, and stipends for unpaid and low-paid internships. "Our responsibility towards the many students who come to Berkeley Social Sciences does not simply end with their graduation,” said Raka Ray, dean of Berkeley Social Sciences. “We want to help them find what they love to do and make a career of it. The Career Readiness Internship Program equips our students with hands-on experience, significantly boosting their job prospects and readiness to tackle real-world challenges even as they find their passion." The program starts with a series of workshops that cover practical topics such as job applications, résumés, cover letters and interviews. Students will hear from Social Sciences leaders and gain insights from alumni panels; they will also have the opportunity to schedule individual coaching sessions through Berkeley Career Engagement.
Program origins
The idea for the Career Readiness Internship Program began in 2017 when anthropology alumnus Eddie Ring visited UC Berkeley to speak to a group of 35 students. As founder and CEO of a real estate firm, and as someone who had managed several career transitions, Ring wanted to help current students understand the full range of opportunities ahead of them — and how they could best position themselves for success. Over time, more Berkeley Social Sciences departments began to bring their alumni back so they could engage with students around career development. Seven years later, the Career Readiness Internship Program was born when donor funds were brought in under one umbrella to support Social Science students in the Division’s 15 departments and programs. The program’s goal is to deliver a student-focused curriculum, with the essential resources for counseling and mentorship.

Vision and mission
New graduates with internship experience have an advantage in a competitive job market, but some Berkeley students, especially those who are first in their families to attend college, are unable to take advantage of these opportunities during college because their financial challenges prevent them from accepting unpaid and underpaid positions. The Career Readiness Internship Program is designed to level the playing field in a competitive job market that prizes not just academic success but also internships. It will cover the cost of housing, local transportation and airfare for international internships, and ensure students with internships in the U.S. earn at least minimum wage. For students like global studies major Katherine Rodriguez, the Career Readiness Internship Program was a game-changer . She was preparing to embark on a transformative internship with the CalEPA’s Department of Toxic Substances Control, but a sudden change in her financial situation left her scrambling to cover her expenses. The program removed her financial barriers, allowing her to participate in Cal-in-Sacramento, one of the University of California’s largest public service internship programs. “This was a great exposure to public policy, and I would definitely pursue a life in public service after graduation,” said Rodriguez. “Everyone seems so sure that they can go far in graduate school and their careers, and that's just beginning for me. Being a part of this program helped me see myself on that same level.” Khatharya Um, the Berkeley Social Sciences associate dean for DEIBJ and an ethnic studies professor, who leads the Career Readiness Internship Program, said Social Sciences developed the program to prepare and empower students to succeed on their own terms. "The program will offer the necessary preparation and critical funding support for a diverse group of students beginning their careers in the public and private sectors,” Um said. “We are dedicated to building more pathways to connect our students with careers they are passionate about, and that will allow them to contribute to bringing about a more just and inclusive society and a better world.” The program aims to have an outsized impact training tomorrow’s leaders, continuing a long tradition at Berkeley Social Sciences. The Division’s top-ranked departments and programs produce savvy alums who leave indelible marks on society as renowned economists, psychologists, sociologists, entrepreneurs and a myriad of professions that advance society.
This year’s cohort
Thanks to the generous support from donors and alumni, the 2023-24 pilot year’s cohort of 25 students includes students in African-American studies, cognitive science, ethnic studies, global studies, political economy, and sociology. The Career Readiness Internship Program plans to expand the number of participants and targeted majors in future years. Students interested in the program can visit sscrip.berkeley.edu to learn more about the rules and prepare their application for next semester. Alums and donors can help the program reach scale by posting internship positions or making a gift to the Social Sciences Student Experience Fund.

Thanks to your support, we can create and augment student-facing initiatives, like those that help our students make a strong start in their professional lives. Thank you for helping students in all of the social sciences majors thrive during their time at UC Berkeley and after graduation.

Government impersonators mail fake notices to business owners
You’ve heard about scammers who pose as government workers, calling to demand your money or information. But imposters are running scams by mail too. They’re sending fake forms and letters from made-up agencies to small business owners and demanding payment ASAP. Here’s what to know and do if you get a letter like this.
The fake government letters have agency names that include words like United States , business regulation , and trademark to make them seem legitimate. The letters lie to you, saying it’s time to register or renew a business license or trademark, sending you to a website that asks for your license, Social Security, EIN, and credit card numbers. Usually, the letters warn about fines if you don’t respond fast.
If you get a letter that looks like it’s from the government and demands money or information, stop. It could be a scam. Before you do anything:
If you spot a scam like this, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov . Find out what to do if you paid someone you think is a scammer, or if you gave a scammer your personal information.

Implementing career ladders for research scientists, research engineers, and research associates
Dear research scientists, research engineers, and research associates,
As we wrote in December , MIT is completing work on an Institute-wide project to establish a laddered job structure among MIT’s research scientists, research engineers, and research associates. New job titles, conveying a job type and one of three numerical levels, will take effect March 1 in MIT human resources systems, and your manager or local HR lead should inform you of the change to your job title by the end of February.
What this means for you is that your current position will be more precisely classified within a matrix of job types and responsibilities, helping to clarify the expectations and paths to advancement for you at MIT.
In certain important ways, the nature of this change is administrative: Unlike the outward-facing position title that you might use on a business card or email signature, a job title at MIT is a classification in a back-end system that allows similar jobs to be managed and analyzed in aggregate. Until now, you and more than 600 other research scientists, research engineers, and research associates have belonged to a single, large classification of employees who “contribute significantly to the design and execution of experiments in research projects.” Such a classification does not recognize the enormous variation across these jobs. That, in turn, has made it difficult for managers to define and differentiate among jobs when hiring new staff or discussing performance and goal setting during annual reviews.
Indeed, the need to evaluate the career advancement opportunities for MIT’s research scientists was part of the charge of Institute-wide Task Force 2021 and Beyond . Building upon the work of a committee with a similar charge at the School of Science, the task force recommended that MIT “create more granular career progressions with clear responsibilities and privileges.” An implementation team then met with faculty and staff across the schools, the college, and the labs, centers, and institutes to identify a suitably versatile job structure that captures the most essential distinctions. The resulting approach has been codified in MIT Policies and Procedures 5.2.2 and is reflected in job guides that you can review (Touchstone required).
When your manager or local human resources lead informs you of your new job title in the coming weeks, we encourage you to read through the relevant job guide to understand the basis for that assignment. Your job may not necessarily fall neatly into one level or another, nor satisfy every characteristic suggested in the job guide. Nevertheless, your manager and department leadership have made an informed judgment as to the best fit, given the scope of your current responsibilities. Our hope is that this new framework and use of the Research Staff Review Form will help to guide a meaningful discussion with your manager during future performance reviews.
For additional background on this classification project, expected outcomes, and the community-wide input that has guided it, please refer to the letter we shared in June 2023 and an updated set of frequently asked questions (Touchstone required) . For questions regarding your specific job title and level, please confer with your supervisor and your local HR administrator.
We want to thank all who contributed input to this project, first through the Research Scientist Career Ladders committee at the School of Science and then through Task Force 2021 and Beyond. In your thoughtful engagement, we heard that MIT could do more to support your career development and clarify the expectations for advancement. We hope that this new approach affords greater recognition to the integral role you play in MIT research, and that it will encourage many of you to see MIT as a place where you can grow your career. We are grateful for all that you do.

Alina Habba’s Career at Risk Due to Weisselberg Perjury Accusations, Says Legal Expert
Posted: February 14, 2024 | Last updated: February 15, 2024
MSNBC legal analyst Lisa Rubin asserts that attorney Alina Habba’s unusual reaction to Judge Arthur Engoron’s query regarding perjury charges against Allen Weisselberg, former CFO of the Trump Organization, is quite noteworthy.
Questionable Response
Rubin highlights the fact that Habba, a controversial figure who represents Donald Trump and also defended Weisselberg – who admitted guilt to 15 charges including grand larceny, falsifying business records, and tax fraud – replied in an interesting manner.
High-Profile Legal Battle
Judge Engoron, leading the trial on Trump’s financial fraud, earlier sought clarity from Trump’s lawyers following a New York Times article suggesting Weisselberg committed perjury.
Rubin, however, finds Habba’s answer to this request peculiar.
Habba’s Letter
Habba wrote in her letter, “We do not represent him [Weisselberg] in connection with any criminal matters. I have not spoken with the New York District Attorney’s Office (DANY) about any of the matters discussed in the New York Times article.”
Cautionary Approach
She added, “Further, in an abundance of caution, I have conferred with my ethics counsel and have been advised that I am constrained by my professional ethical obligations from providing any further detail.”
What’s Not Being Said
Lisa Rubin observes that Habba notably doesn’t deny discussing plea negotiations with Weisselberg or his criminal defense attorney.
She also doesn’t refute that some of his testimony might have been knowingly false.
Ethical Dilemmas
Rubin suggests this could imply that Habba is potentially breaching Rule 3.3 regarding her ethical duties to all clients, not just Trump.
Judge’s Stern Warning
Rubin argues, “For now, it’s not clear what ethical obligations she’s referring to. After all, Engoron — in an emailed response to counsel Thursday — reaffirmed Habba’s duties under Rule 3.3. And he ended with a stern warning: ‘[I]f someone pleads guilty to committing perjury in a case over which I am presiding, I want to know about it.'”
Weisselberg’s Case
Rubin goes on to say, “But while l’affaire Weisselberg ultimately may not prevent Engoron from ruling soon, the episode — and not her actual courtroom antics — could be what causes the greatest harm yet to Alina Habba’s standing as a lawyer. Watch this space.”
Weighing the Consequences
She implies that this matter could become problematic for Habba, especially as Judge Engoron deliberates over the substantial financial penalties proposed by New York Attorney General Letitia James in her civil lawsuit.
A Figure of Interest
Rubin points out that Weisselberg, who has served the Trump family for almost 50 years, has always been a figure of interest and allegedly a collaborator in Trump’s fraud activities.
Behind the Scenes
His deep-rooted loyalty to Trump is undeniable. After admitting to felony tax fraud in the Manhattan DA’s case against him and the Trump Organization in 2022, Weisselberg was compelled to testify in court, yet he firmly refrained from betraying the former president.
“And he appears to have been rewarded for his ‘service,’” Rubin remarks.
$2 Million Severance Deal
The day before his five-month sentence to Rikers Island, Weisselberg inked a $2 million severance deal. Rubin has previously raised doubts about this agreement’s authenticity, particularly because, as part of the deal to receive the $2 million in eight payments over two years, Weisselberg must not assist any parties, including law enforcement or prosecutors, with claims against the Company or its associates.
In essence, unless legally compelled, Weisselberg is barred from aiding those seeking accountability from Trump.
Legal Ties Examined
Rubin’s analysis returns to Habba’s role in the ongoing civil fraud trial presided over by Judge Arthur Engoron, who is soon expected to decide on damages. Both Trump and Weisselberg are defendants in this case, and like Trump, Weisselberg was subpoenaed to testify.
Allegations of Lying Under Oath
Rubin notes that Weisselberg is reportedly discussing another plea deal with the Manhattan DA, as reported by The New York Times, for allegedly lying under oath during his testimony at this trial.
Judge’s Questions
Engoron, tasked with assessing witness credibility for his ruling, has understandably asked both parties to reveal what they know about Weisselberg’s purported readiness to confess to perjury.
The judge also instructed them to express their opinions on how these alleged plea talks might affect his decision-making timeline.
Rubin observes, “Nothing in the responses suggests that Engoron should delay his decision, but that’s where they diverge.”
