Why Women Won

Speaker:  Claudia Goldin - 2023 Nobel Prize in Economics Winner

Chair: Francesco Caselli

Date:  Thursday 02 May 2024  Time:  5.00pm to 6.15pm Venue: Old Theatre - Ground floor, Old Building, LSE

How, when, and why did women in the US obtain legal rights equal to men’s regarding the workplace, marriage, family, Social Security, criminal justice, credit markets, and other parts of the economy and society, decades after they gained the right to vote? The story begins with the civil rights movement and the somewhat fortuitous nature of the early and key women’s rights legislation. The women’s movement then formed to press for further rights. Of the 155 critical moments in women’s rights history from 1905 to 2023, 45% occur between 1963 and 1973. The greatly increased employment of women, the formation of women’s rights associations, and the unstinting efforts of various members of Congress were behind the advances. But women became splintered far more than did men. A substantial group of women emerged in the 1970s to oppose various rights for women, just as they did during the suffrage movement. They remain a powerful force today.

Entry requirements show, what qualifications will you need.

  • Age 17+ by 30 November in the year of registration.
  • Satisfy our General Entrance Requirements (see above)
  • Mathematics to UK GCSE Level (Grade C) or equivalent.

Even if you don’t meet the standard requirements, we will consider each application on its own merits. Our Admissions Panel will consider whether any alternative/incomplete qualifications or work experience you have are suitable for entry to the programme.

I don’t meet the entry requirements. What can I do?

If you are not eligible for this programme, you may be able to study the CertHE Social Sciences before progressing with credit. This programme must be studied at an approved local teaching centre.

Alternatively, you might be interested in our International Foundation Programme . This pre-university programme is equivalent in standard to qualifications studied in Year 13 (i.e. A levels) and must also be studied at an approved local teaching centre.

Graduate entry route

You may apply for graduate entry if you hold an acceptable undergraduate or postgraduate award. The award must be at least one year full-time in duration and considered at least comparable in level to a UK bachelor degree. Professional qualifications and memberships will be considered on an individual basis.

You must also satisfy English language and any mathematics requirements for your chosen degree.

What do I need for graduate entry?

English Language requirements

You need to demonstrate a good level of English to be admitted to our programmes. We accept a range of evidence, including proficiency test scores. If you don’t have evidence but believe you can meet the standard, we may consider your case.

Do I meet the language requirements?

We set minimum basic computer requirements because your study resources are accessed via the Student Portal and it is vital that you can access this regularly. For this degree, you will also need to be able to view video material and a media player (such as VLC) to play video files.

More about computer requirements.

Recognition of prior learning Show

If you have studied material as part of a previous qualification that is comparable in content, level and standard to our EMFSS degree modules, you may be exempted from the equivalent course of our degree. This is known as  Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)  or Exemption. You will not need to study or be assessed in the module(s) to complete your award.

Standard entry route: You may apply for RPL mapped against for up to a total of 120 UK credits (four 100/ first-year level courses or equivalent).

Graduate entry route: You may apply for RPL mapped against for up to a total of 30 UK credits (one 100 course or equivalent).

You cannot apply for RPL for 200 or 300 courses of a BSc.

To be considered for RPL you should make a formal request within your application when applying for the programme. Or, you can submit an online enquiry , if you have already applied.

You will need to have met the entrance requirements for the programme to be considered for RPL.

You must have completed the qualification/ examination(s), on which the application for RPL is based on, within the five years preceding the application.

We will not consider RPL if you have already entered for the assessment in the module concerned.

Some qualifications are  automatically  recognised as meeting the learning outcomes of our courses. If you satisfy the conditions, we will accredit your prior learning as detailed within the Qualifications for Automatic RPL table: Recognition of Prior Learning degrees In EMFSS . No fees are charged for this service.

With the exception of the qualifications noted in the automatic RPL section on our website, applications for RPL based on examinations from professional institutions or professional certificates will not normally be considered.

Discretionary RPL

Other qualifications will need to be assessed by specialist academics on a case by case basis , before we can approve RPL. A formal application is required and an RPL application fee is payable. The RPL application fee is non-refundable, even if your prior learning is not recognised.

Your qualification must be at the appropriate level (equivalent to a UK Level 4 qualification or above) to be considered.

For your discretionary RPL request to be processed, you will need to provide: a completed RPL request form, the supporting documentary evidence (normally a scanned copy of an official transcript and syllabus of your previous studies) and the discretionary RPL fee.

You should apply as early as possible to ensure we have sufficient time to review your qualifications and so you can register by the registration deadline.

Note: All discretionary RPL requests must be submitted by the dates specified in the year that you apply. We must receive all required supporting evidence by the deadline stated.

If you submit your discretionary RPL application but are too late to be considered for RPL in the current session, we will still process your application to study the programme. If you receive an offer, you can still register. If you wish to be considered for RPL in a subsequent session, then you shouldn’t register on the modules you want to apply for RPL.

How to request RPL:

Additional information about the process of applying for RPL .

Further information regarding RPL is covered in the Recognition of Prior Learning section of the appropriate  Programme Regulations and Section 3 of the General Regulations

Where to Go in London for Inspiring Talks and Lectures

Where to Go in London for Inspiring Talks and Lectures

Love This? Save and Share!

Ready to listen to some big brains and big ideas? Here’s where you can go for inspiring talks and lectures in London.

“Intellectual growth should commence at birth and cease only at death.” – Albert Einstein

The big man said it, now y’all hear it. There’s so much to learn, and so much of it right here in your city.

It seems like every major institution has some ideas they want to share. Open your mind – it’s time to book some of the best talks and lectures in the city.

The Best Places for Talks & Lectures in London

Intelligence squared.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Intelligence Squared (@intelligencesquared)

London born Intelligence Squared is now a world-wide (and world-renowned) forum for discussion and the sharing of ideas that shape the future.

But they haven’t forgotten their roots, and still gather the world’s best and brightest for regular talks in London.

The topics are as broad and varied as the mosaic of life would have them be. You might recognise some of the speakers from the telly, but let’s be real – if you’re reading this you’re probably more of a book person.

One scroll through their upcoming events has our brains fizzing like Einstein’s hairdo. See you there, notebook in hand.

Gresham College

Holborn

Gresham College

Gresham College has been providing free, public lectures in London since 1597 and have done some pretty admirable things in those 400-odd years.

They were the first higher education institution in London, and aimed to provide free education to its citizens. They did it in English back when the cool thing was for universities to teach in Latin.

Gresham College also taught the weird subjects that weren’t taught elsewhere like astronomy and geometry. The list goes on, but their educational accolades are nothing short of incredible, like, yep, these guys founded the Royal Society.

400 years later and they’re still at it, doing free talks on so much interesting stuff it’s impossible to mention it all here. You’ll just have to find out for yourself.

The British Museum

View this post on Instagram A post shared by British Museum (@britishmuseum)

Looking for history lectures in London? Look no further than the British Museum. Their regularly filled calendar is never lacking for interesting historical topics.

The British Museums talks often riff off stuff from their collections, which as you already know never lacks the interesting.

Think talks on Roman London , the beauty of Japanese art or the realities of ancient Egyptian mummification.

The speakers: only the sharpest minds in their chosen fields. Check out the upcoming schedule here.

The School of Life

Multiple locations

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The School of Life (@theschooloflifelondon)

Our absolute favourite on this list has to be The School of Life. Founded by a group of very smart people including author, philosopher and all round good egg Alain de Botton, the school of life has one goal: teaching people how to live.

And don’t worry, it doesn’t involve any sanctimonious finger-wagging. They are trying to answer a question that has troubled the greatest minds in philosophy since, well, forever.

They offer talks on everything from deepening self-knowledge to being, building lasting love, and even how to fail. Check out their full events calendar here .

The V&A

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Victoria and Albert Museum (@vamuseum)

Founded way back when (1852) with the purpose of educating the British public on cultures from around the world, as well as bits of history that have shaped the collective imagination, the V&A stays true to its nearly 200 year-old goal with some of the best free lectures in London.

The constantly changing topics cover everything from climate change to musicals and regularly focus on the museum’s genuinely incredible collections.

If you’re looking for a little stimulation, you can find their upcoming events program here.

They’re V&A-mazing! (Sorry).

The Royal Institute of Philosophy

Here’s one for you thinkers out there. The Royal Institute of Philosophy holds regular free talks and lectures in London.

As you guessed, topics can get pretty heady, but there’s usually something there for everyone.

Talks swing from discussions on society, race, and political correctness to stuff as left-field as ancient Chinese theory of Language.

We’re talking about some real deep thinkers, folks. If you reckon you’re one of them, take a look at the upcoming events.

The Design Museum

Holland Park

View this post on Instagram A post shared by the Design Museum (@designmuseum)

Home of all things sleek and chic, and the ideas behind them, the Design Museum holds regular talks on all aspects of the design world.

That means stuff like fashion, sustainability, architecture, and all that other good stuff that needs designing.

Oh and seeing as design is kinda a hands-on thing, they also offer workshops for people of all ages where you can get stuck in with the fun part of actually building and making stuff.

If that sounds like your cup of tea then the full events list is right here.

The National Gallery

Westminster

View this post on Instagram A post shared by National Gallery (@nationalgallery)

Ever wondered what made Van Gogh tick? Or what Lucian Freud wrote in his letters?

The National Gallery has all the answers. They’ll also share them with you through the medium of public lecture, expert panel discussion, and after-hours museum tours.

Although some of the talks are paid, most are free. And there’s plenty for the artistically inclined to get excited about.

So whether you’re after some painterly instruction, or just want to brush up on some art history (see what we did there?) this is the one for you.

The British Library

King’s Cross

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The British Library (@british_library_london)

The British Library has plenty you’ll want to book (OK, we’ll stop).

For real, if literature is your thing then this is where you’ll wanna be keeping your eye on their events calendar .

They hold regular talks highlighting writing by underrepresented minorities, as well as stuff on the literary giants of the past, and everything in the middle.

And the talks don’t stop at things written, but the ideas behind them. Expect to catch lectures on the foundation of our myths, the derogation of words and even the occasional film screening.

The Royal Society

St James’s

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Royal Society (@theroyalsociety)

Founded by one of the other great British institutions on this list (were you paying attention?) The Royal Society holds regular talks on the subject it does best: science.

The topics often weave themselves nicely into contemporary issues, or are simply things that pique our curiosity. Like…what’s laughing actually all about?

Gene editing. You know they can actually do that now? No, not at the Royal Academy, but they will explain all about it.
