The 13 Best Book Review Sites and Book Rating Sites

Knowing where to buy books can be challenging. So, here are the best book review sites to help you avoid buying books that you'll regret reading.

Nobody likes to spend money on a new book only to face that overwhelming feeling of disappointment when it doesn't live up to your expectations. The solution is to check out a few book review sites before you hit the shops. The greater the diversity of opinions you can gather, the more confidence you can have that you'll enjoy the title.

Which book review and book rating sites are worth considering? Here are the best ones.

1. Goodreads

goodreads

Goodreads is arguably the leading online community for book lovers. If you want some inspiration for which novel or biography to read next, this is the book review site to visit.

There's an endless number of user-generated reading lists to explore, and Goodreads itself publishes dozens of "best of" lists across a number of categories. You can do a book search by plot or subject , or join book discussions and reading groups with thousands of members.

You can participate in the community by adding your own rankings to books you've read and leaving reviews for other people to check out. Occasionally, there are even bonus events like question and answer sessions with authors.

2. LibraryThing

librarything book review

LibraryThing is the self-proclaimed largest book club in the world. It has more than 2.3 million members and is one of the best social networking platforms for book lovers .

With a free account, you can add up to 200 books to your library and share them with other users. But it's in the other areas where LibraryThing can claim to be one of the best book review sites.

Naturally, there are ratings, user reviews, and tags. But be sure to click on the Zeitgeist tab at the top of the page. It contains masses of information, including the top books by rating, by the number of reviews, by authors, and loads more.

3. Book Riot

book riot

Book Riot is a blog. It publishes listicles on dozens of different topics, many of which review the best books in a certain genre. To give you an idea, some recent articles include Keeping Hoping Alive: 11 Thrilling YA Survival Stories and The Best Historical Fiction Books You’ve Never Heard Of .

Of course, there's also plenty of non-reading list content. If you have a general affinity for literature, Book Riot is definitely worth adding to the list of websites you browse every day.

bookish

Bookish is a site that all members of book clubs should know about. It helps you prep for your next meeting with discussion guides, book quizzes, and book games. There are even food and drink suggestions, as well as playlist recommendations.

But the site is more than just book club meetings. It also offers lots of editorial content. That comes in the form of author interviews, opinion essays, book reviews and recommendations, reading challenges, and giveaways.

Be sure to look at the Must-Reads section of the site regularly to get the latest book reviews. Also, it goes without saying that the people behind Bookish are book lovers, too. To get a glimpse of what they’re reading, check out their Staff Reads articles.

5. Booklist

booklist

Booklist is a print magazine that also offers an online portal. Trusted experts from the American Library Association write all the book reviews.

You can see snippets of reviews for different books. However, to read them in full, you will need to subscribe. An annual plan for this book review site costs $184.95 per year.

6. Fantasy Book Review

fantasy book review website

Fantasy Book Review should be high on the list for anyone who is a fan of fantasy works. The book review site publishes reviews for both children's books and adults' books.

It has a section on the top fantasy books of all time and a continually updated list of must-read books for each year. You can also search through the recommended books by sub-genres such as Sword and Sorcery, Parallel Worlds, and Epic Fantasy.

7. LoveReading

lovereading

LoveReading is one of the most popular book review sites in the UK, but American audiences will find it to be equally useful.

The site is divided into fiction and non-fiction works. In each area, it publishes weekly staff picks, books of the month, debuts of the month, ebooks of the month, audiobooks of the month, and the nationwide bestsellers. Each book on every list has a full review that you can read for free.

Make sure you also check out their Highlights tab to get book reviews for selected titles of the month. In Collections , you'll also find themed reading lists such as World War One Literature and Green Reads .

kirkus

Kirkus has been involved in producing book reviews since the 1930s. This book review site looks at the week's bestselling books, and provides lengthy critiques for each one.

As you'd expect, you'll also find dozens of "best of" lists and individual book reviews across many categories and genres.

And while you're on the site, make sure you click on the Kirkus Prize section. You can look at all the past winners and finalists, complete with the accompanying reviews of their books.

reddit books

Although Reddit is a social media site, you can use it to get book reviews of famous books, or almost any other book for that matter! Reddit has a Subreddit, r/books, that is dedicated to book reviews and reading lists.

The subreddit has weekly scheduled threads about a particular topic or genre. Anyone can then chip in with their opinions about which books are recommendable. Several new threads are published every day, with people discussing their latest discovery with an accompanying book rating or review.

You'll also discover a weekly recommendation thread. Recent threads have included subjects such as Favorite Books About Climate Science , Literature of Indigenous Peoples , and Books Set in the Desert . There’s also a weekly What are you Reading? discussion and frequent AMAs.

For more social media-like platforms, check out these must-have apps for book lovers .

10. YouTube

YouTube is not the type of place that immediately springs to mind when you think of the best book review sites online.

Nonetheless, there are several engaging YouTube channels that frequently offer opinions on books they've read. You’ll easily find book reviews of famous books here.

Some of the most notable book review YouTube channels include Better Than Food: Book Reviews , Little Book Owl , PolandBananasBooks , and Rincey Reads .

man in the music book on amazon

Amazon is probably one of your go-to site when you want to buy something. If you don’t mind used copies, it’s also one of the best websites to buy second-hand books .

Now, to get book reviews, just search and click on a title, then scroll down to see the ratings and what others who have bought the book are saying. It’s a quick way to have an overview of the book’s rating. If you spot the words Look Inside above the book cover, it means you get to preview the first few pages of the book, too!

Regardless of the praises or criticisms you have heard from other book review sites, reading a sample is the most direct way to help you gauge the content’s potential and see whether the author’s writing style suits your tastes.

12. StoryGraph

storygraph

StoryGraph is another good book review site that's worth checking out. The book rating is determined by the site's large community of readers. Key in the title of a book you're interested in and click on it in StoryGraph's search results to have an overall view of its rating.

Each book review provides information on the moods and pacing of the story. It also indicates whether the tale is plot or character-driven, what readers feel about the extent of character development, how lovable the characters generally are, and the diversity of the cast.

13. London Review of Books

london review of books

The London Review of Books is a magazine that covers a range of subjects such as culture, literature, and philosophy. Part of its content includes amazingly detailed book reviews. If you feel that most modern book reviews are too brief for your liking, the London Review of Books should suit you best.

You'll gain insight into the flow and themes of the story, as well as a more thorough picture of the events taking place in the book.

Read Book Reviews Before You Buy

The book review sites we've discussed will appeal to different types of readers. Some people will be more comfortable with the easy-to-interpret book rating systems; others will prefer extensive reviews written by experienced professionals.

Although it’s easy to be tempted by a gorgeous book cover, it’s always best to have a quick look at the book reviews before actually buying a copy. This way, you can save your money and spend it on the books that you’ll be proud to display on your shelves for a long time. And check out recommendations, as well, to help you find what's worth reading.

About AbeBooks

AbeBooks Review

Since the mid-90s, AbeBooks have offered booksellers and buyers a platform to find one another and connect globally.

They have a Facebook following of about 113k and close to 150k views on their YouTube Channel. They have sellers in more than 50 countries and also offer textbooks , collectibles , and art .

In this AbeBooks review, I aim to take an in-depth look at this platform to see if they are worth your money. I’ll do this by checking out their products, promotions, and customer reviews.

Overview Of AbeBooks

AbeBooks Review

In 1996 , when the internet was young, AbeBooks came into being as a platform for booksellers to list their products online.

They came out of British Columbia, Canada but were available for sellers and buyers around the world. Starting mainly with books – rare, new, used, and bestsellers – they now offer collectibles and art.

In 2008, Amazon bought AbeBooks from Rick and Vivian Pura and Keith and Cathy Watersand.

The company continues to operate out of their headquarters in Victoria, BC, and now has six international sites, with sellers from more than 50 countries worldwide.

Before I check out some of the products found at this established platform in this AbeBooks review, let’s take a glance at some of their highlights.

AbeBooks Review

  • Offers a place to find any book, new and used
  • Discounted prices
  • Sellers from around the world
  • Rare books available
  • Sells art and collectibles as well

AbeBooks Books Review

AbeBooks are a platform that connects sellers and buyers in four categories – new and used books , rare books , art & collectibles , and textbooks .

As any student knows, textbooks are really expensive and you only tend to need them for one scholastic year. AbeBooks allows students to find new and used textbooks for less.

AbeBooks used books give avid readers the chance to buy books in all sorts of conditions at huge discounts.

They also have new ones and best sellers for those who still prefer the feel of paper to an ebook. Book collectors can find rare books, while comics or movie memorabilia collectors can get all kinds of paraphernalia and rare editions.

While some products like lithographs and best sellers are available in large quantities, many are one-offs like rare editions. In this AbeBooks review, I’ll look at a few of their products so you can get an idea of what they have to offer.

AbeBooks The Exorcist Original Poster Maquette for the 1973 Film Review

AbeBooks The Exorcist Original Poster Maquette for the 1973 Film

AbeBooks The Exorcist Original Poster Maquette for the 1973 Film is a great example of what you can find in the rare movie memorabilia section of the collectibles.

With a haunting image of a priest standing in the light coming from a window, any Exorcist fan will get chills up their spine. This one-of-a-kind item is priced at $8,500 .

AbeBooks The Lord of the Rings First Edition Set Review

AbeBooks The Lord of the Rings First Edition Set

Look up AbeBooks The Lord of the Rings First Edition Set and you get four options, depending on how much you want to spend.

A paperback boxed set in good condition with just a bit of damage is $22 , while a hardcover, with dust covers, of the 1954 original print is almost $52,000 . This addition to my AbeBooks review is only for the most hardcore Tolkien fans.

AbeBooks Pablo Picasso Etude de Personnages Lithograph Review

AbeBooks Pablo Picasso Etude de Personnages Lithograph

Along with books and collectibles, this platform offer artworks, like the AbeBooks Pablo Picasso Etude de Personnages Lithograph .

This replication of the artist’s 1899 painting was produced between 1979-82 by the family of Picasso. It sells for $850 .

AbeBooks DC Super Heroes Poster Book Review

AbeBooks DC Super Heroes Poster Book

What DC Comics fan wouldn’t love an AbeBooks DC Super Heroes Poster Book from 1978? The cover has everyone running somewhat towards you.

Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman are most prominent with other lesser characters like Robin, The Joker, Bat Girl, Aquaman, and the Flash behind them. The posters are all there and in good condition.

This poster book has three retailers and sells between $150 and $320 .

Who Is AbeBooks For?

AbeBooks Review

From all that I’ve shown in this AbeBooks review, I feel that this platform is for anyone looking for books, artwork, and/or collectibles .

In a day and age when e-readers are popular, those who enjoy holding paper books find it more difficult to buy them, especially if they aren’t new titles. AbeBooks let people find books – new, used, and rare – in one place, from many vendors.

Folks into collectibles such as movie memorabilia or old comics/graphic novels, you can find items from retailers worldwide.

AbeBooks Reviews: What Do Customers Think?

AbeBooks Review

On to my favorite part of this article: what the AbeBooks reviews from their customer tell us about the brand.

Let’s start with TrustPilot where they have 4 reviews and a  5/5-star rating. Here is quite the explanatory customer testimonial:

“The books offered range from almost new in higher prices to those from libraries for which you pay only for shipping. It’s easy to find ten books for less than $100 … I’ve compared with Amazon and returned to Abes. You won’t be sorry.”

So, that customer uses AbeBooks for used books at an exceptional price. If you aren’t bothered by some damage and don’t plan to collect the books, this is ideal for you.

The next AbeBooks review is from Influenster where the brand has amassed a score of 4.3/5 stars from 373 reviews. I just had to include this review for its positivity:

“Abebooks is an excellent place to find pretty much any book you’re looking for, even the really hard-to-find ones. My dad uses this site a lot to buy rare books for his collection of boxing books, and I use it when a book I want can’t be found anywhere else .”

This platform helps families like theirs find hard-to-find and rare books for any interest. The next AbeBooks review from the brand’s website uses it for finding college textbooks at a cheaper price. They say:

“I use this site to buy textbooks for college. It has never let me down yet . Love that they offer prices that are sometimes cheaper than prices on Amazon. I would totally recommend this site . Definitely won’t stop using it :)”

So, these AbeBooks reviews show that people can anything that they are looking for through the retailers on this platform. But how easy is it to navigate?

The next customer left this review on Reviewopedia – which has 5/5 stars based on 2 reviews – that answers that very question. They say:

“Go Here First. This is the best place to find almost any book available with the default order of results being lowest price first. You can search according to hardcover, paperback, first edition, etc. and you can make your search very specific. This site is like stepping into a huge second-hand bookstore where you can browse and find hidden treasures .”

After seeing these great reviews, I should also make note of a few bad reviews on Sitejabber and some complaints on the Better Business Bureau website.

The issues tend to be about the delivery process, with some items never arriving. Since AbeBooks is made up of many vendors, some aren’t as diligent as others but that’s a risk well worth taking.

AbeBooks reimburse you for any such issues. They also have a 5-star rating system that is based on the percentage of sales a vendor completes that don’t get refunded or canceled. I suggest checking those ratings before purchasing from any vendor.

Is AbeBooks Legit?

AbeBooks Review

There are complaints out there of delivery issues where often orders weren’t received.

However, AbeBooks responded to the Better Business Bureau complaints to the satisfaction of their customers, leading me to think that this brand is indeed legit .

Is AbeBooks Worth It?

AbeBooks Review

So, to the crux of the matter – is AbeBooks worth your money? Yes, absolutely , but I do suggest doing your due diligence as to the seller ratings.

As an online mall with vendors from all over the globe, AbeBooks is the best place to find any books – new, used, rare, and text. They are also a great place to find art and collectibles.

AbeBooks Promotions & Discounts

AbeBooks Review

For this AbeBooks review, I was unable to find any AbeBooks coupon codes or any other promotions. This is because the brand is an online platform or mall, so it is the shops that are responsible for any discounts and promotions.

Where To Buy AbeBooks

AbeBooks Review

As an online platform, the only place to get AbeBooks is on their website at abebooks.com .

AbeBooks Review

Who owns AbeBooks?

AbeBooks has been owned by Amazon since 2008 .

Does AbeBooks ship internationally?

Yes, AbeBooks ships internationally as their sellers are located across the globe.

What is AbeBooks’ Shipping Policy?

Since AbeBooks are a platform with many vendors, each seller determines their own shipping costs and times depending on where they, and you, are located. Books are usually shipped out within two business days .

What is AbeBooks’ Return Policy?

AbeBooks has a 30-day money-back guarantee if you are unhappy with your purchase because the seller misrepresented it or it never arrived.

For any other issues, you need to contact the seller directly.

How To Contact AbeBooks

If you have any questions that I didn’t answer in this AbeBooks review, you can contact their customer service through their Contact US page .

If you’re tight on cash and the book you want isn’t available at your local library, thrift books are a good option to consider. Finding cheap books online is easy and convenient for those who don’t want to shop in-store. If you want cheap new books, book subscription services offer competitive prices on the latest titles. You can also find highly discounted books online at several bookselling websites such as Book Outlet and Thriftbooks. Find the best one for your needs by reviewing our favorites below!

Book of the Month Club

Book of the Month Club is a book subscription service offering cheap new books. Their service gives you five options each month and you can choose one and add another for an additional fee. It’s easy to skip a month if their book choices don’t interest you. Their five selections are often new releases by debut authors, so it’s a convenient service for those who want to stay up-to-date on the latest voices in literature. The first month is only $9.99, and after that, the service is $14.99. Given that most new hardbacks range anywhere from $15 to $30 at your local bookstore, BOTMC offers a steep discount on new books. You can also gift the service to a friend or family member for three months, six months, or 12 months.

Bookroo is the kid-friendly equivalent of Book of the Month Club. It serves children from ages 0 to 10. The first tier is for children ages 0–3, which offers three board books per month. The second sends two picture books each month, and the third tier sends two chapter books targeted toward children ages 7–10. Bookroo makes buying books fun. The colorful wrapping paper that each new book arrives wrapped in adds to the excitement of receiving them. This service is a favorite among parents who don’t have time to research books for their kids. If you’ve been searching for cheap books for kids, Bookroo will appeal to you. The monthly service takes 50% off the retail price, and you can cancel whenever you want.

Better World Books

Better World Books is a cheap book online retailer on a mission to spread literacy to those in need. When you buy a book on their site, they will donate another book to a child in need. They offer new and used books, but their biggest selling point is their large selection of cheap used books. Most of their used books sell for under four dollars, so you don’t have to worry about spending a lot of money if you want to support their mission.

Powell’s Books

Powell’s Books is a well-known Portland-based bookstore that sells many different genres of new and used books. PB is a good option if you’re looking for cheap textbooks for college as well, as you can sell your books back to them at the end of the semester. They are more selective about which books they will buy from customers than other used book retailers, but it benefits buyers like you because you’ll get like-new quality on most used books they sell.

Thriftbooks

Thriftbooks is the Half Price Books of the internet. They sell both new and used books, along with CDs, DVDs, and records. The Thriftbooks app makes buying books more convenient, and their point system allows buyers to earn a free book once they reach a certain number of points. Most books on their site range from $3 to $5, so if you want to find cheap books online, Thriftbooks is the place to go.

Amazon offers daily book deals on physical and Kindle books. Titles range from children’s books to adult romances, crime, and mystery novels. Their bargain books change every day so keep an eye out for titles on your TBR. You can also browse some of the best free Kindle books available on Amazon.

Websites to Buy Cheap Books

If you are an avid reader, buying books can cost you a fortune. Luckily, you don’t have to buy all books brand-new (unless you do so on principle). Nowadays, there are plenty of ways to buy books on a budget. One of them is buying used books from various online sellers. In this article, we’ve prepared a list of the best online resources where you can buy books cheaply in 2024.

1. BookScouter

bookscouter logo

We’ll put eBay second on our list of top websites to buy cheap books in 2024 because it’s where you can find an avalanche of cheap books. Besides, you can either buy them for a fixed price or participate in an auction. The latter feature is not an advantage for a bookseller. However, if you are a buyer looking for cheap used books, this may be your catch, as auctions for more or less popular books often start from $1 or even less . By bidding at the lowest possible price, you can sometimes get a great book almost for nothing. However, keep in mind that you will have to pay for shipping, and the shipping rates may be higher than the price of the book itself. eBay is also one of the best places to search for rare collectibles. Such books won’t cost you a few bucks; however, you can come across a rare book and, if you are lucky, buy it for an affordable price.

The Final Thoughts

Nowadays, there are many places where one can find used books at low prices; however, we recommend doing it online. For one thing, it’s faster and more convenient; for another, you can check all the available bookseller options just in a few clicks and get your order delivered to your doorstep in a few days. We’ve researched the most popular online booksellers in 2024, and the 12 websites we’ve described in this article appeared to be the best, according to many book lover reviews.

We hope that this list will be helpful in your book search. And a friendly reminder: you can always check price comparison websites like BookScouter before going to a bookseller directly to see the entire price landscape at once and choose the best possible offer.

Scam!!! Do not book with bookcheaptrip.com

I book 3 tickets via bookcheaptrip.com on Friday 28th July and received an email with booking numbers and confirmation. The email also indicated that a separate email will be sent with the e-tickets once the payment has been deducted. I received no email but i tried several times to reach them by telephone since their customer service email came back that the address did not exist. Each time you go into their site, it is a different contact number, however i eventually got an answer only to be told that the booking was not confirmed and the cost of the ticket was 3 times the price they had it for. Poor poor poor... Scam!!!

We have to buy another ticket to come back to Baltimore. They are scamers, please don't book nothing with this company. when I called spirit it was another name that they used to get the money back on their card including the money I paid for my suitcases, they took all my money and when my bank called them , they said that I used the service , but they canceled my return. they are scamers

SCAM SCAM SCAM

be carful of this people, you book your flight and you pay . they don't send any confirmation , when you call they give you excuse ,in my case was a website mistake , promotion ended , like they end the promotion manually as a flyer , instead he proposed another price higher than the market price. scam scam scam

SCAM!!!!!!! DO NOT BOOK THROUGH THEM!!

Well you pay just for holding your seat…

Well you pay just for holding your seat at the price they offer. Once you are trying to confirm they offer you a discount give or take 100 to 200 dollars off the regular booking site, like Delta or Southwest. So basically you are getting a discount give or take 100 to 200 dollars off orginally price. Its NOT the price when you first book it!!! Then when you try to cancel within 24 hours, they can ONLY give you credit to the airline, and not refund your credit card back. Even though there was no booking for the airline. SCAM

Fake reviews, fake bookings...

Booked a reservation at a great price. Site says I have until 11:45pm that day to cancel for free. Then I get spammed with calls - wary of other reviews, I'm not interested in negotiating the price, so I did not pick up. By the time it was too late to cancel, the tickets had still not been issued yet! It was just a "booking request". The next day I got an email that the booking was cancelled, no reason given. I'm worried that this company will hold on to my personal details...

Date of experience : November 30, 2022

I kept trying to purchase a flight from minneapolis to Denver and every time I would click submit through other websites the price would update and it ended up being $300 more than I have originally agreed to. I googled something along the lines of "cheapest flight websites" and found this website. I found TWO round trip flights for $100 TOTAL and was so excited I quick purchased before the rates went up. After I purchased I got a bad feeling and thought damn maybe that was too good to be true. I googled to see if this website was a scam and saw mixed reviews. I thought I messed up. I tried to email the customer service email they have listed but it is not legit, was even more nervous. Then I called the phone number and left a voicemail, someone by the name Angela called me back the next day and sent me an email with the confirmation code for my flights. I went to Fronteirs website and plugged in the confirmation code and sure enough there they were!!! I'm so happy, definitely worth the risk! This website is definitely sketchy but not a scam!!

Defiantly not a scam company

Defiantly not a scam company. They were able to get me Delta flight that was going for 2k for $750 a person. It did take a little time to have them process but after 2 days I had my tickets. I due recommend them. But I also recommend calling and not using the website to book your tickets. Website is not up to date and gives you not realistic prices. I had a very nice sales person Dean Smith. He helped my family and 4 more families of my friends with the same flights. Now we all can travel together.

What is The Book Bundler? Common Q/A

We save used books from landfills and paper recyclers through our exclusive partnerships. We are the last chance for books before they are shredded or permanently destroyed.

We have a custom sorting process that took us years to build, sorting through truckloads of used books, and pulling out only the highest quality books for our bundles.

Save Save Save

The books we save are bundled together, by type, genre, series or any of our 270+ categories.

Because we bundle in bulk, our prices are the lowest you can find on the internet. Typically between $1-2 per BOOK.

How does it work?

You don't get to pick your exact titles, but you can pick your age ranges, book types, genres, series or any of our countless options to customize the library or book box of your dreams.

We do the heavy lifting and save you the most valuable resource there is.....TIME(and money) by picking the titles for you.

What if I get a duplicate?

What if I get a duplicate book!? What if I get a book I don't like?! We've heard it all. That's why we have our Replacement Guarantee . We will replace any book that doesn't meet your standards, fast and free of charge.

But don't take our word for it! Read our reviews, browse our customer submitted photos and when you're ready Start Bundling

Is this a subscription service?

No, buy our books, boxes and bundles as you need them. No reoccurring or surprise charges.

Where do you get your books?

From other books sellers and paper recycling facilities.

Most booksellers are only interested in selling valuable books like textbooks or rare out of print books. They often discard/destroy the kids books and adult bestsellers even if they are in amazing condition just because they can't sell them for enough.

That's where we step in and BUNDLE them.

So fun and exciting to open and see what I got and they were all in really good shape! I ordered a different bundle right after!

My 2 year old granddaughter loves them!

Books were as described. A nice variety and decent quality.

Holy cow this was a great buy. I expected a few but got 3 big boxes full! It was enough to fill out my bookshelf and my brother took some home for his library even. everything was in great shape too!

The 25 Best Places to Find Free Ebooks in 2023

In recent years, the ebook format has exploded in popularity. Today, it only takes a few clicks to find the ebook version of almost any title. And while you can always save money on discount ebooks, doesn’t the idea of free ebooks sound pretty sweet?

Luckily, there are tons of different ebook platforms that offer exactly that. Here you'll find 25 places to get free ebooks, from mainstream ebook retailers to digital libraries that fill in the gaps! We’ll start with the former, but if you can’t find that elusive ebook in these first few stores, fear not: you have plenty of other options.

If you're feeling overwhelmed by the number of great books out there, you can also take our 30-second quiz below to narrow it down quickly and get a personalized book recommendation 😉

Which book should you read next?

Takes 30 seconds!

1. Amazon Kindle Store

If you’re seeking free Kindle books , you’re in luck! The Amazon Kindle Store has two sections dedicated to just that: its Free Popular Classics page and its list of Top 100 Free Best Sellers . For those who enjoy indie books, Kindle Unlimited could also be a good investment — it’s $9.99/month, so not quite free, but you’ll gain access to over a million titles and there’s no cap on how many books you can read per month.

2. Apple Book Store

The Apple Books Store is another big-name ebook retailer with a nice selection of free titles. You’ll find them divided by category under the Free Books tab in the sidebar: Newly Added, First in a Series, Try Something New, and many more. Though its range isn’t as extensive as Amazon’s, the Apple Book Store is a solid choice if you’re looking for free fiction, especially if you like gripping suspense books and/or speculative fiction.

3. Google Play Bookstore

books cheap reviews

Google Play makes it easy to find free books on its digital store — unlike on other sites, you can simply enter “free ebooks” into the search bar (makes sense for a search engine, right?). You’ll be directed to this page of freebies, and can click “See more” to explore. There aren’t many big-name titles available for free on the Google Play Store, but if you’re interested in nonfiction (especially test prep and self-help books ), it’s definitely worth scoping out.

4. Barnes & Noble Online

books cheap reviews

Despite originating as a brick-and-mortar bookstore, the Barnes & Noble digital shop is stocked with plenty of free and discount books. It also retains a reassuring element of human curation, with “Staff Picks” at the top of B&N’s Free eBooks page , as well as an eye-catching section of free magazines below. Readers should note that some free titles can only be read on B&N’s NOOK Reading App; it’s free to download, but does add an extra step to the process.

5. Kobo Bookstore

books cheap reviews

Kobo is the last major player in the literary e-tailer game, with a huge digital store and its own brand of e-readers. To find Kobo’s free ebook section, hover over the “eBooks” tab at the top of the page and click Free eBooks on the right. Even seasoned readers will be impressed by the selection, as Kobo offers a number of free titles you won’t see anywhere else, particularly in the romance and thriller genres — and also features a list of #ownvoices authors for those craving more diverse reads.

6. Free-Ebooks.net

books cheap reviews

Needless to say, if you’re looking for free ebooks, Free-Ebooks.net is a fine place to start. With thousands of ebooks available to download, you’ll never run out of reading material… however, you’ll be hard-pressed to find works by well-known authors. Forge ahead if you’re intrigued by a vast landscape of free indie ebooks — or check out Free-Ebooks’ extensive classics package for some more recognizable titles.

7. Project Gutenberg

books cheap reviews

If you’ve ever Googled any variation of “[iconic classic novel] read online”, you’re probably already familiar with Project Gutenberg . This tremendous digital archive was founded all the way back in 1971, and today hosts over 60,000 documents and books, all of which are free to access. For those in search of plain-text, easily searchable, copy-and-pastable versions of Jane Austen and Charles Dickens books , look no further: Project Gutenberg has you covered.

8. Open Culture

books cheap reviews

Open Culture is another great place to find classic novels by authors like F. Scott Fitzgerald and Virginia Woolf, and even the massive tomes of Proust and Tolstoy. Take note that Open Culture doesn’t host ebooks, instead serving as a hub for all manner of free online resources. However, you can find its impressive master list of 800 free books right here , with multiple links to download these texts or read them online, depending on which file format you prefer.

9. Freebooksy

books cheap reviews

Freebooksy, a popular book promotion site , is also a hub rather than a host site, linking out to free books on various retailers. What sets Freebooksy apart as a platform is that it only features ebooks that are free that day, so get ’em while they’re hot! You can browse each day’s selections right there on the homepage , or subscribe to the Freebooksy newsletter to receive them in your inbox.

10. BookBub

books cheap reviews

BookBub is another excellent promotional tool for authors and a quality source of free and discount books for readers. To access BookBub’s current freebies, just click Free Ebooks under the “Readers” tab at the bottom of the page. Here you’ll find abundant free titles with links to download them on Amazon and more. Also, if you’d like to see deals in a specific genre or for a certain retailer, you can select it on the left — though you’ll have to sort through these, as BookBub’s category pages mix both 100% free and discount promotions.

11. ManyBooks

books cheap reviews

The ManyBooks premise is simple: “Lots of ebooks. 100% free.” Select a genre, scroll through “Today’s Free Ebooks and Deals”, or check out the “Editor’s Choice” recs to see what’s worth your while. Indeed, ManyBooks offers a great deal in the way of quality control, from the ability to sort books by average rating to its own book review blog . If you’re looking for ebooks endorsed by real people, ManyBooks is the site for you.

12. OverDrive

books cheap reviews

Used by over 43,000 libraries and schools worldwide, OverDrive allows anyone with a library card to pull ebooks, audiobooks, and magazines from its digital bookshelves. Though there can  be long waiting lists for popular books (just like a real library — quaint, no?), borrowing them on OverDrive is a much better alternative than scouring the Internet in vain. Browse its featured collections, or search by title or author to locate the book you have in mind. And if you’d rather read on your phone, be sure to download OverDrive’s mobile app, Libby .

13. Open Library

books cheap reviews

Coming in hot with another virtual library, we have Open Library , a division of the long-running Internet Archive. This site is convenient because you don’t have to deal with multiple libraries;  any ebook on Open Library can be borrowed with a single click. Keep in mind that the site has a narrower selection as a result, and most recent releases aren’t available. But if you’re content to read books that came out a few years ago, Open Library won’t let you down.

14. Get Free Ebooks

books cheap reviews

Pivoting back to non-library sites, you’ll find plenty of ebooks on none other than Get Free Ebooks — though again, this one isn’t an ebook hosting platform, but a site that links out to other sources. However, if you’re seeking helpful literary lists divided by genre and subject, this is the place to be. Check out their top compilations of ebooks for tons of interesting titles, or select a genre under the “Top Categories” list at the bottom of the page.

15. Ebooks.com

books cheap reviews

A reliable source for all things ebook-related, Ebooks.com offers up a fairly large collection of free books , with a focus on the classics. Its online e-reader runs pretty smoothly and is nice for readers who like to mark up their texts, with options to highlight passages and leave notes. However, those looking to download their ebooks should be aware that Ebooks.com requires you to install Adobe Digital Editions first (it’s a free program, but may still be a drawback for readers hoping to conserve storage space).

16. Reedsy Discovery

books cheap reviews

For those who like to properly digest their free ebooks and then share your thoughts with an audience, consider becoming a reviewer on Reedsy Discovery! You’ll receive a free ebook copy of every title you pick up for review, plus you’ll gain followers and can even get tipped for your work. If that’s not a great bargain, we don’t know what is.

17. Planet Ebook

books cheap reviews

If the refreshingly minimalist design of Planet Ebook doesn’t instantly convince you of its merits, its sizable catalogue of public domain books certainly will. And because it’s based in Australia, Planet Ebook pulls from a wider public domain than in the US, so you may be able to find titles on there that you couldn’t find elsewhere. To survey its full list of books, click here .

18. Standard Ebooks

books cheap reviews

Standard Ebooks is another site that’s easy on the eyes, mainly for the beautiful book covers that accompany each title in its library — perfectly in line with the project’s mission to provide free ebooks that “meet or exceed the quality of commercially produced ebooks.” Indeed, here are 500+ books that aren’t just “standard,” but exceptionally formatted. Readers in constant search of nice-looking classics, make sure to bookmark this site.

19. Feedbooks

books cheap reviews

On Feedbooks, a site that hosts vast quantities of ebooks to purchase, you can also find free public domain ebooks and free original books . The latter should appeal to readers who have gotten their fill of the public domain, especially as Feedbooks offers some books to download that mainstream retailers do not. However, be prepared to sift carefully through its offerings, as the free offerings can get mixed up with priced ebooks on its featured pages — you may have to search “free” in the upper righthand corner to get what you came for.

20. Book Cave

books cheap reviews

Book Cave has a pretty compelling headline: “Free ebooks you’ll actually want to read.” You’ll find the aforementioned ebooks right here , with sophisticated filters attached. Not only can you divide these books up by genre, but also by maturity level and even sensitive content, if you wish to exclude violence, profanity, etc. With nearly 2,000 free books available and all these ways to filter them, Book Cave really does help readers find precisely what they want.

21. Smashwords

books cheap reviews

Since so many authors use Smashwords as an aggregator to distribute their ebooks , the Smashwords store ends up hosting quite a few books itself — and according to its stat counter, a whopping 86,000+ of those books are available for free. You can browse through them all here , though you’ll probably want to select a category in the sidebar to narrow it down.

22. BookRix

books cheap reviews

Another popular self-publishing platform, BookRix hosts thousands of freebies in its online library , most of which are original stories from brand-new authors. Indeed, BookRix is more Wattpad than Amazon KDP , since ebooks can be of any length and fanfiction is allowed. For readers looking to expand their horizons or just have fun, BookRix is definitely worth a shot.

23. Baen Books

books cheap reviews

And for readers who adore science fiction and fantasy , Baen Books could be your new favorite corner of the Internet. This publisher, founded by celebrated SFF editor Jim Baen, has grown into a wonderful hub for SFF readers and writers alike — complete with plenty of Baen ebooks in its Free Library . Many are actually the first in a series, so if you’re looking for a new fantastical world in which to immerse yourself, Baen Books should be your first stop.

24. BookBoon

books cheap reviews

We also can’t leave out BookBoon , a site that provides free e-textbooks, making it an incredibly valuable resource for students and autodidacts alike. If you’re in school or know someone else who is, this site needs to be on your radar: under their free “Student” plan, BookBoon offers 1,000+ full-length textbooks, on subjects ranging from chemistry to communications. Go get your Good Will Hunting on!

25. The Online Books Page

books cheap reviews

Speaking of academic resources, the University of Pennsylvania’s Online Books Page is a clean, accessible hub for over three million ebooks and digitized papers — some originally published more than two centuries ago. For the historically inclined, this site (which also has a pretty good search engine) is a veritable fountain of knowledge.

Is Booksi A Scam? The Truth Behind The Cheap Vacation Deals

Is Booksi a Scam?

If you love traveling and saving money, you might have come across Booksi, a website that claims to offer amazing hotel and all-inclusive deals for up to 83% off.

But is Booksi a scam or a legit way to book your dream vacation?

In this article, we will reveal the truth behind Booksi and its offers, and help you decide if it’s worth your time and money.

Is Booksi A Scam?Courtesy:Booksi

What is Booksi?

Booksi is an online platform that sells discounted vacation packages to various destinations around the world.

It works with Monster Reservations Group, a travel agency that negotiates with hotels and resorts to get exclusive rates for its customers.

Booksi claims to have over 1 million members and over 3600 verified reviews on Sitejabber .

How Does Booksi Work?

Booksi offers two types of vacation packages: hotel-only and all-inclusive.

Hotel-only packages include accommodation for a certain number of nights at a selected hotel, while all-inclusive packages include accommodation, meals, drinks, entertainment, and activities at a selected resort.

Booksi also offers optional add-ons such as airport transfers, car rentals, excursions, and travel insurance.

To book a vacation package with Booksi, you need to follow these steps:

  • Browse the available offers on Booksi.com and choose the one that suits your preferences and budget.
  • Pay a deposit fee (usually $99) to secure your reservation. The deposit fee is refundable within 7 days of purchase.
  • Call Booksi’s customer service within 15 minutes of booking to verify your information and eligibility. You will also receive an email confirmation with your reservation number and details.
  • Choose your travel dates within 18 months of booking. You can change your dates up to 3 times without any fees, subject to availability.
  • Pay the remaining balance of your package at least 45 days before your departure date. You can pay by credit card, debit card, or PayPal.
  • Receive your travel documents by email and enjoy your vacation.

What are the Pros and Cons of Booksi?

Booksi has some advantages and disadvantages that you should consider before booking with them. Here are some of them:

  • Booksi offers very low prices for hotel and all-inclusive packages compared to other travel websites.
  • Booksi has a wide range of destinations and properties to choose from, including popular places like Cancun, Orlando, Las Vegas, Punta Cana, and more.
  • Booksi allows you to book your vacation up to 18 months in advance, giving you plenty of time to plan and save for your trip.
  • Booksi has a 7-day refund policy and a flexible date change policy, in case you change your mind or need to reschedule your trip.
  • Booksi has a customer support team that is available 24/7 by phone, email, or chat.
  • Booksi requires you to attend a resort preview presentation (also known as a timeshare presentation) as part of the deal. The presentation can last up to 120 minutes and can be high-pressure and sales-oriented. If you fail to attend the presentation or meet the eligibility criteria, you may lose your package or pay a penalty fee.
  • Booksi does not include airfare or transportation in its packages, so you need to arrange your own flights and transfers to and from your destination.
  • Booksi has some restrictions and limitations on its packages, such as minimum income requirements, age requirements, marital status requirements, occupancy limits, blackout dates, advance booking notice, etc. You need to read the terms and conditions carefully before booking to make sure you qualify for the offer.

Kelly link's debut novel 'the book of love' is magical, confusing, heartfelt, strange.

Gabino Iglesias

Cover of The Book of Love

For years, fans of Kelly Link, one of the finest purveyors of contemporary short fiction, have wondered what the author would be able to do with a full novel — and have eagerly waited for her to deliver one.

That wait ends now with the release of The Book of Love , Link's debut novel. And the author has embraced the freedom granted by a longer format, delivering a 600-page behemoth of a novel that shatters reality while pulling readers into the lives of several characters and obliterating any perceived dividing line between speculative fiction and literary fiction.

As an avid reader and book reviewer, I'm looking forward to seeing how other reviewers tackle a synopsis of this novel. The narrative starts late one night when Laura, Daniel, and Mo find themselves in a classroom with their music teacher and a strange entity. The youngsters are dead, but they're not. They disappeared a year ago from their hometown of Lovesend, Massachusetts. They were presumed dead, and they are, but now that they're back, their teacher, who possesses magical powers, alters reality. Instead of dead, they're all coming back from a long trip to study in Ireland. Their teacher knows what happened...maybe.

With their story in their heads and their new reality in place. the teenagers are sent back to their previous lives, where they must cope with everything that happened during their absence while simultaneously trying to figure out what will happen next. Also, there was a cryptic message for them on the blackboard of the room where they appeared: "2 RETURN/2 REMAIN." What does it mean? How does that math affect the outcome of their return? Their life as the undead is already complicated enough, but their bizarre revivification has brought something other than the teenagers from the other side; supernatural entities that have their own agendas. As Laura, Daniel, and Mo navigate their new situation and adapt to their new realities, they must also crack the mystery of their return, and more than their own resurrection hangs in the balance.

That's a lengthy synopsis, but it barely scratches the surface of The Book of Love , which also delves into the complications of love and friendship, family drama, grief, resilience, and the unlimited power of adaptability while delivering a tale of supernatural menace that also explores what it truly means to be alive. After years of award-winning short stories in some great venues and a few outstanding short story collections like Get in Trouble , which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, and White Cat, Black Dog , this novel is proof that Link can be as strange, entertaining, and witty in novel form as she is when writing short stories.

The Book of Love is a narrative about love — and death and resurrection and kissing people and growing up and sibling rivalry and horror. This is a story about stories that even touches on writing. Mo's grandmother, Maryanne, who passed away while Mo was away, was a prolific writer who wrote 73 books in 42 years. Writing allowed her to build a good life and to take care of Mo after his mother passed away. She was also a Black woman. Little details like that open the door to new things, so while Link is telling us about Mo, she also gives us Maryanne's biography while also discussing publishing and the intricacies of a Black woman writing a very popular series about a white woman. Stories within stories, narratives that delve into memories, and expansive passages what go deep into the psychological and emotional inner worlds of the characters are common. In fact, this book will be too much for some readers. This is an entertaining novel, but it's also a barrage of ideas and minutiae, a veritable onslaught of language and narratives that deviate from the core of the story.

This is a long book that's simultaneously dazzling and dizzying. Some lines cut with their clarity and sincerity while some plot elements are puzzling. Link is a wizard writing spells that obey a dream logic only she fully understands. At once a book for adults that's full of elements that make it feel like a fantasy YA novel, a story about survival and danger that starts with a group of dead kids and only gets weirder from there, and a narrative that shows a mighty writer with a unique voice at the height of her powers, The Book of Love is, simply put, a magical, confusing, heartfelt, strange, wonderfully written novel that delivers everything fans of Link's short fiction expected while also packing a few surprises.

Kelly Link Returns with a Dreamlike, Profoundly Beautiful Novel

In “The Book of Love,” the Pulitzer finalist and master of short stories pushes our understanding of what a fantasy novel can be.

  • Share full article

An illustration of a young woman walking amid a blue haze, with two other figures in the background.

By Amal El-Mohtar

Amal El-Mohtar is the Book Review’s science fiction and fantasy columnist, a Hugo Award-winning writer and the co-author, with Max Gladstone, of “This Is How You Lose the Time War.”

THE BOOK OF LOVE , by Kelly Link

A certain weight of expectation accrues on writers of short fiction who haven’t produced a novel, as if the short story were merely the larval stage of longer work. No matter how celebrated the author and her stories, how garlanded with prizes and grants, the sense persists: She will eventually graduate from the short form to the long. After an adolescence spent munching milkweed in increments of 10,000 words or less, she will come to her senses and build the chrysalis required for a novel to emerge, winged and tender, from within.

Now Kelly Link — an editor and publisher, a recipient of a MacArthur “genius grant” and the author of five story collections, one of which was a Pulitzer Prize finalist — has produced a novel. Seven years in the making, “The Book of Love” — long, but never boring — enacts a transformation of a different kind: It is our world that must expand to accommodate it, we who must evolve our understanding of what a fantasy novel can be.

Reviewing “The Book of Love” feels like trying to describe a dream. It’s profoundly beautiful, provokes intense emotion, offers up what feel like rooted, incontrovertible truths — but as soon as one tries to repeat them, all that’s left are shapes and textures, the faint outlines of shifting terrain.

Still, here goes: Set in 2014, in a small Massachusetts town called Lovesend, “The Book of Love” is the story of three local teenagers (and one stowaway) who return from the dead and must compete for the prize of remaining alive by completing a series of magical tasks.

It’s the story of the parents, siblings and lovers of those teenagers, the people who mourned them for the year they were gone and now, magically, have had those memories of grief replaced: The teens were never dead, they were only studying abroad.

It’s the story of the wizard-priests who guard either side of the door to the world of the dead; one of them is the teens’ high school music teacher, who must now instruct them in magic if they’re to survive.

It’s the story of a fey, cruel moon goddess who’s lost the key to her larder of souls, and the young man, now hundreds of years old, who bound himself to her service in exchange for a promise of revenge.

It’s the story of two sisters, one of whom is part of the undead trio, who can’t speak without hurting or irritating each other, but who also need each other, are lost without each other.

“The Book of Love” is made up of smaller books: Each character perspective is presented as “The Book of [character name],” with surprising detours into the interiority of objects or concepts. This might suggest discrete accounts with clear divisions between them, but the reality is more complex: These books are in conversation with one another, their lives interleaved.

Susanna and Laura Hand, the sisters, are in a band with Daniel Knowe, who’s been secretly dating Susanna but is opaquely detested by Mo Gorch, who is close friends with the girl Laura has a deep crush on — the girl Susanna kissed out of spite. They’ve all known one another since childhood, and they’re all on the cusp of adulthood. Tugging the story forward through these relationships are the questions of how Laura, Daniel and Mo died, why they came back, who or what slipped out of death alongside them, and what they all have to do to stay on this side of the grave.

It’s common to read a book with a strong sense of place and say that the setting is a character in the story. But in “The Book of Love,” it’s more correct to say that characters provide the story’s setting: Each “Book” is a dwelling place to experience a life, and taken together, the result is immense. As C.S. Lewis wrote of heaven and John Crowley wrote of fairyland, the further in you go, the bigger it gets — an experience that recalls the process of getting to know a person.

So much of Link’s work steps lightly, a tempering of the commonplace with vivid, delicate surprise. In a 2023 profile for Vulture , Link observed: “The novel hardens as you go on. … At a certain point the ambitions, even the shape, begin to feel inevitable. The short story stays fluid.” I kept waiting for the novel to harden as it went on, but it never did; every sentence remained a springboard for new sound, piano keys rising and falling in new variations. In one chapter, a man summons his lover by playing wrong notes in an old song; Link’s project here sometimes feels like that, resisting an expected shape by leaning out of resolving cadences and into bumps, splinters, question marks.

“Don’t be ashamed of the things that you unabashedly love in narrative,” Link said in a 2019 speech. “Investigate them with a loving heart.” Investigating romance novels, small towns, families, the friends and music you make in high school, fairy villains and fairy lovers, with fascinated tenderness and deep familiarity, “The Book of Love” does justice to its name. Its composition, its copiousness, suggests that love, in the end, contains all — that frustration, rage, vulnerability, loss and grief are love’s constituent parts, bound by and into it.
