Nick Perry

In the dead of winter when things are gloomy and slow, you can always get a vicarious thrill from the best action movies on Netflix right now. While Netflix has a great collection of action movies, scrolling through it to find something to watch is basically the opposite of an adrenaline rush. That's why we curate the collection for you with this monthly roundup!

This February, Netflix adds recent blockbusters from Steven Spielberg and Guillermo del Toro, an action-horror franchise starter, and one of the cooler World War II movies of recent years.

Max has established itself as one of the essential mainstream streaming services thanks to its impressive catalog of movies. Just as importantly, if not more so, though, is that the platform's library offers an excellent level of variety across the medium's history.

That breadth of diversity also means audiences are treated to movies spanning every genre and decade, ensuring there will be hundreds of hours worth of content to satisfy any moviegoer's tastes. Even so, it can sometimes feel intimidating to know where to start given the amount of content on hand. Thankfully, we've curated a guide to the best movies to stream on Max that is updated every month with the latest additions to the streamer's library.

When it comes to some of the best shows on television, Max, formerly HBO Max, is often at the top of that list. The streaming service not only offers its own slate of originals, but also library content from HBO. This dates all the way back to shows like Sex and the City and The Sopranos, the latter of which is celebrating 25 years since it went on the air this year. The momentum continues with shows that will likely be just as fondly remembered a quarter century from now, like The Last of Us, The White Lotus, and Succession.

If you're looking for something to watch, you'll find a show that fits on Max. There's something in every genre, for every mood, of every length and type. The best shows on Max right now are an eclectic mix, so browse this list to find the ones to watch. From new seasons of popular shows to new series, these selections will easily fill your TV schedule.

2023 movies: every release in 2023

The titles you may have missed in 2023.

Jason Momoa's Aquaman in The Lost Kingdom

For fans of costumed crime fighters, intergalactic odysseys, old school action serials, and creepy classics, it has proven to be a very important year at the cinema, with a stunning variety of 2023 movies. Admittedly, those types of stories can be found all the time (including throughout our upcoming 2024 movies schedule , as well), but they especially describe the movies coming out in this particular year.

Of course, there are more than just upcoming superhero movies (including upcoming Marvel movies ) to look forward to, as well as upcoming horror movies , too. Let's go through all of the 2023 movie releases we saw.

NOTE: Releases from previous months have been shifted to the bottom of the page.

Academy Award nominee Timothée Chalamet embodies a younger version of Roald Dahl’s famous chocolatier in Wonka , Jason Momoa reprises his water-based DC superhero role in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom , and star and director Bradley Cooper portrays Leonard Bernstein in Netflix’s Maestro . Also, check your list twice for a pair of upcoming A24 movies ( The Zone of Interest and The Iron Claw ), Yorgos Lanthimos’ bizarre satire, Poor Things , and a new musical version of The Color Purple , to name a few.

March 2023 Movie Release

March 2023 was a big month for sequels, with the knockout boxing drama, Creed III (also Michael B. November 2023 Movie Releases

Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson and Stanley Simons in "Iron Claw."

You can finally watch The Iron Claw from the comfort of your own home. The film about the legendary wrestling family was released on digital platforms on Feb. 13, but when will The Iron Claw make its streaming debut on Max?

Directed by Season Durkin, the biographical sports drama is based on the true story of the Von Erich family, the wrestling dynasty who left a significant mark on the sports world. Set in the early 1980s, Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson, and Stanley Simons star as the Von Erich brothers, who all embark on professional wrestling careers led by their father, Fritz Von Erich (Holt McCallany). Fritz was a famous wrestler in the ’60s and ’70s and was best known for his finisher called the Iron Claw.

While achieving immense fame in the wrestling industry, the Von Erich family faced a series of tragedies depicted in the film. The family became associated with these devastating personal events, which were coined as the “Von Erich curse.”

Durkin told IndieWire in December 2023 that he was drawn to telling the story of the Von Erich family after watching interviews that Kevin Von Erich (Zac Efron’s character) has done. “He spoke so openly and honestly and at length about his family’s trauma, his own personal experience, stories of his upbringing, stories of his own considered suicide,” said Durkin, who’s also behind independent films like Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011) and The Nest (2020).

The director also revealed that Efron was the first person he approached about playing Kevin, the eldest Von Erich brother. “Zac was the first person I met with. When I met him, he’s just got this kindness, this sweetness to him, that I knew Kevin needed.”

Google reveals much needed google photos upgrade but there s a catch, taylor swift fans reportedly forced travis kelce to move out of his brand new house.

The former High School Musical star told Deadline that it was an opportunity he’d been waiting for. “I’ve always wanted, and I feel like maybe this is it, just the opportunity through a movie to leave something of value for the audience,” Efron said. “This experience and hearing people’s words on the movie, it just means everything, man. It’s hard to put into words.”

To prepare for his role in The Iron Claw , Efron worked out multiple hours a day, beginning with volume training to gain 15 pounds of muscle. “That necessity to be perfect — it became an obsession,” Zac admitted to Variety . “It was a singular focus for months. And your life goes out the window during prep.” He continued, “Then I was able to incorporate old-school body-building and Olympic lifting and really achieved that specific look of pro wrestlers, which was really hard.”

Meanwhile, Efron’s co-star Jeremy Allen White didn’t believe it was “physically possible” to transform into his character Kerry Von Erich. “I knew I couldn’t get as big as Kerry. I just don’t think it was physically possible for me,” White told IndieWire . “I’m a pretty little guy, but I tried. I don’t think it’s possible for any human on the planet.”

White revealed that he had to commit to a “gross” high-protein diet. “[I was] eating all the time. Like, never stopping,” White added. “In the morning, I would have waffles, almond butter. In the middle of the day, I was eating turkey patties and avocado all the time. It’s really just gross. You’re trying to consume as much as you possibly can, and, to be honest, you don’t feel great. I was training as well, but, I don’t know, trying to get that big, it’s no way to live.”

How To Watch The Iron Claw

Zac Efron in "Iron Claw."

The Iron Claw is available to buy digitally for $19.99 on video-on-demand platforms like Amazon Prime Video , Apple TV , and Vudu as of Feb. 13, 2024. The Iron Claw is still playing in select theaters.

When Is The Iron Claw Coming To Streaming?

The Iron Claw will eventually be available to stream Max, but the release date has yet to be announced. The wrestling film will likely make its way to the streamer sometime in April or May.

The film’s production company, A24, signed a deal with Warner Bros. Discovery in December 2023 to bring its theatrical films — including The Iron Claw, Priscilla, Dicks: The Musical , and more — to their streaming site in 2024. Stay tuned to learn exactly when The Iron Claw will arrive on Max.

The past couple of years have been unusual, to say the least, and like most other industries, Hollywood has had to make a number of adjustments. We saw Warner Bros. commit to streaming all of their major 2021 releases simultaneously on HBO Max, with mixed results, while other studios incorporated some combination of theatrical and digital strategies. That has changed a bit so far in 2023, as we’ve seen studios release some big box office winners through July. Read on for the Most Anticipated Movies of 2023, and as more titles are announced and information is released, we will continue to update this page, so check back often!

Dicks: The Musical (2023)

Larry Charles, the man who worked with Sacha Baron Cohen to bring us movies like  Borat ,  Bruno , and The Dictator , sets his sights on the big screen musical in this not-so-subtle twist on  The Parent Trap . Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp — the creators of the play upon which the film is based — play a pair of competing businessmen who discover they’re long-lost identical twins and decide to swap identities in order to bring their divorced parents back together.

The Exorcist: Believer (2023)

After capping off his trio of Halloween films, director David Gordon Green jumps right into another beloved horror franchise. As with his tackling of the Michael Myers story, The Exorcist is a follow-up to the original — and the 1973 original only — and will reportedly unfold as the first of a trilogy, with Ellen Burstyn set to reprise her starring turn.

If you missed out on seeing Taylor Swift in person during her Eras tour — and a lot of people did — then you’re in luck. You can see her in all her glory on the big screen in this concert film that weaves together some of the best moments from the tour.

Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)

Based on David Grann’s broadly lauded best-selling book, Killers of the Flower Moon  is a sobering appraisal of America’s relationship with Indigenous peoples and yet another artistic zenith for Martin Scorsese and his collaborators.

Pain Hustlers (2023)

Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts director David Yates delves into decidedly less fantastical territory with this based-on-true-events crime drama that centers on a woman who takes a job at a pharmaceutical start-up in Florida and finds herself at the center of a criminal conspiracy. The film stars Emily Blunt, Chris Evans, and Andy Garcia, among others.

Priscilla (2023)

Last year we got Elvis , and this year we get Priscilla . Sofia Coppola’s latest film is an adaptation of Priscilla Presley’s memoir and something of a passion project for Coppola. The film, which largely charts Presley’s relationship with Elvis, premiered at the Venice Film Festival to rave reviews and looks to be another Awards contender.

The Killer (2023)

Following up on his Oscar-winning Mank for Netflix, David Fincher turns to something a little darker. We don’t know much about this film, except that it’s a neo-noir thriller based on a French graphic novel series, and it will star Michael Fassbender and Tilda Swinton, among others.

The Marvels (2023)

The MCU ain’t getting any smaller, as Marvel plans to release five films in 2023 alone, including this sequel to Captain Marvel , which has Nia DaCosta (2021’s Candyman ) at the helm and Brie Larson returning as Carol Danvers. The film will also be the big screen debut of Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel after her eponymous Disney+ series debuts in 2022.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023)

Franchise vet Francis Lawrence returns to direct this  Hunger Games prequel based on the novel of the same name by Suzanne Collins. The story primarily follows a young Coriolanus Snow (originally played by Donald Sutherland) and his involvement in the Hunger Games as a game-changing mentor years before the events of the original series.

Next Goal Wins (2023)

Taika Waititi takes on a decidedly more grounded film after last year’s Thor: Love and Thunder in this adaptation of the 2015 documentary of the same title. The story follows Dutch-American soccer coach Thomas Rongen (Michael Fassbender), who is hired to help turn around the American Samoa national team, which is considered one of the worst in the world.

Napoleon (2023)

Joaquin Phoenix reunites with Gladiator director Ridley Scott for this historical drama about the famous French general-turned-emperor. The film will be a chronicle of Napoleon’s rise to power, told through the lens of his volatile relationship to his wife, Josephine (Vanessa Kirby). The film is also reported to have several big battle sequences, which Scott should be able to manage with plenty of flair.

Wish (2023)

Just as the meta  Lightyear  looked at the character that inspired the character Tim Allen voices in the  Toy Story  movies,  Wish  will tell the origin story of the wishing star that factors into so many Disney fables.  Frozen’s  Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck are writing the script for the animated film while Oscar winner Ariana DeBose will star.

Not to be outdone by Taylor Swift, Beyoncé dropped an unexpected trailer for a concert film documenting her Renaissance World Tour, the highest-grossing concert tour by any woman, the day after its final performance on October 1. Let the Beyhive rejoice… and show up in theaters on December 1, when the film debuts.

The Bikeriders (2023)

Austin Butler and Jodie Comer headline an all-star ensemble cast in this drama inspired by the eponymous nonfiction photo-book, courtesy of writer-director Jeff Nichols ( Take Shelter ,  Mud ). The story traces the history of a Midwestern motorcycle club during the 1960s through the viewpoint of a woman (Jodie Comer) married to one of its members (Austin Butler).

Godzilla Minus One (2023)

The latest iteration in the Japanese Godzilla franchise comes to us courtesy of writer-director Takashi Yamazaki (he also did the visual effects!) and takes place just after the end of World War II. As Japan struggles to recover from the effects of the war, the kaiju we all know and fear suddenly appears and wreaks destruction across the land.

The Boy and the Heron (2023)

Japanese animation legend Hayao Miyazaki’s reportedly final film was famously not promoted in any way — before the first teaser dropped just days ahead of the film’s TIFF premiere, the only thing we had to go on was a poster image and the fact that it was inspired by a 1937 novel. We now also know the film’s release date, and while those looking for a description of the film can find it online easily, we’ll choose to let audiences discover the film for themselves (and you can always check out the teaser above).

Poor Things (2023)

Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail wrote, directed, and produced this thriller based on the novel of the same name about a family whose vacation at an Airbnb is interrupted by the property’s owners, who have arrived with news of a mysterious widespread blackout. The cast includes Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, and Ethan Hawke.

Leave the World Behind (2023)

Wonka (2023)

Timothée Chalamet steps into the offbeat shoes of a young Willy Wonka in this origin story, which captures the budding chocolatier as he crosses paths with the Oompa-Loompas. Olivia Colman, Sally Hawkins, Keegan Michael-Key, and Rowan Atkinson round out the grade-A cast, while Paul King, who enjoyed massive critical success with his two  Paddington films, takes the helm.

The Color Purple (2023)

The musical, which nabbed a Tony for its revival on the Great White Way in 2016, makes its way to the silver screen just in time to close out the year. Be on the lookout for R&B phenom H.E.R., who makes her screen debut in the early-1900s-set Southern epic.

Rebel Moon: Part One - A Child of Fire (2023)

After the success of  Army of the Dead , Zack Snyder’s next project for Netflix is this space epic based on an original story of Snyder’s own. The story centers on a peaceful colony who, threatened by a tyrant, send a young woman to neighboring planets to recruit an army. The film is scheduled for a limited theatrical release before it streams on Netflix, but we don’t know when that will be yet.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023)

James Wan returns to the director’s chair for another go at the world of Atlantis and the DC superhero Aquaman (Jason Momoa), who will be joined by Amber Heard (Mera), Patrick Wilson (Ocean Master), and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Black Manta).

China Box Office Preview: Can 8 Films Deliver a $1 Billion Lunar New Year Sequel?

Zhang Yimou, Han Han, Jia Ling and Ning Hao all compete for eyeballs in a crowded holiday season

Chinese New Year film posters

Eight Chinese-language films release simultaneously this weekend in mainland China and will vie for a slice of the Lunar New Year holiday box office business.

The week-long nationwide holiday period has in recent years become the most lucrative season for cinemas, and key films stake out their slot in the release calendar months or years in advance.

The new Chinese films all debut on Saturday (Friday is the normal day for releases in China) and should have an unchallenged two weeks on screen. But if the new Chinese films don’t perform well, there is already a string of new Hollywood releases queuing up for screen time, starting with “Argylle” on Feb. 23.

Commentators are divided as to whether the 2024 season will be bigger than last year, when tickets worth $1 billion were sold in what may have been a frenzy of “revenge spending” following a miserable COVID-hit 2022.

Zhang Tong, senior analyst at China’s Maoyan Research Institute, estimates that the 2024 figure could come in at RMB 7-8 billion or $975 million to $1.1 billion. But comparisons may not be on equal footing as the extra dates make this “the longest Spring Holiday ever.”

“Current feedback shows that audiences are relatively positive about the Spring Festival movies this year and we are optimistic about the box office,” Zhang told Variety .

Last year’s top titles were Zhang Yimou ’s period comedy drama “Full River Red,” which earned a career total of RMB4.55 billion ($633 million), and blockbuster sci-fi sequel “The Wandering Earth II,” which pulled in RMB4.03 billion ($561 million).

In 2024, both macro and micro conditions may weigh against box office records. At the macro level, China’s economy failed to rebound as strongly as had been hoped after COVID and is beset by a string of problems including the housing sector crisis (which weighs on saving and sentiment), high youth unemployment and strains on international trade. Other commentators point to weather and transport problems as possibly delaying or reducing cinema attendance.

Pre-sales ticketing data suggests that the two theatrical frontrunners are: “Pegasus 2,” a car-racing comedy sequel to director and former racing driver Han Han’s 2019 hit of the same title, which pulled in $255 million; and “YOLO,” a warm-hearted comedy about appreciating oneself, reportedly adapted from the Japanese film “100 Yen Love.” “YOLO” is the second film by Jia Ling, the newcomer who touched millions of hearts with her time-travel tearjerker “Hi, Mom” at Chinese New Year in 2021. It earned a stunning RMB5.41 billion ($752 million).

Currently tracking in third place is “Article 20,” a light drama from Zhang Yimou that takes its title from the concept of justifiable defense in Chinese criminal law.

Tracking fourth, for now, is “ The Movie Emperor ,” a satirical comedy in which Hong Kong superstar Andy Lau allows himself to be humiliated and pilloried in a dissection of celebrity in the digital age. Classily directed by reliable hitmaker Ning Hao (“Crazy Racer,” “Crazy Racer”), the film premiered last fall in Toronto and was the closing film of the Busan Festival. But it pushed back its commercial release date and is gambling on China’s upcoming holiday season instead.

“Vida La Vida,” which sees two sick youngsters on a healing journey, is one of the few new-release titles that is not a comedy.

The session will also feature a trio of animation titles – the annual “Boonie Bears” franchise title, this one called “Time Twist” – and “Ba Jie,” directed by He Ranhao about demons, sacred artefacts and the entry to Heaven. “Huang Pi: God of Wealth Cat,” which uses motion capture for an animated tale about a multi-lingual cat who dispenses money, is also in the frame, but appears to have started its promotional campaign later than the others and early data from Maoyan shows it eighth in the pre-sales stakes.

China has the world’s largest installed base of Imax premium large format screens and the company has spent several years encouraging Chinese filmmakers to either shoot with Imax-approved technologies or to screen their finished pictures in its format. Four Chinese movies will show in Imax cinemas over the holiday season: “YOLO,” “Article 20,” “Boonie Bears: Time Twist, and “Pegasus 2.”

“The eventual Chinese New Year winner is sure to come from one of ‘YOLO,’ ‘Pegasus 2’ or ‘Article 20’,” said Maoyan’s Zhang. “Though with parent-child audiences ‘Boonie Bears’ is clearly the preferred choice.”
