CDC report finds teens use drugs — often alone — to ease stress and anxiety

Teenagers with suspected substance use problems say they turn to drugs because of a crushing need to relax and escape worries, according to research published Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The new findings follow reports of rising anxiety and depression among the nation's youth, including unprecedented levels of hopelessness .

Because those conditions are often linked to substance use in adolescence, said Sarah Connolly, lead author of the new report and an epidemic intelligence service officer within the CDC's Division of Overdose Prevention, "it might make sense that teens are looking for ways to reduce stress and anxiety."

Connolly's study, the first of its kind, expands on limited research previously done on why kids use drugs. It is based on data from the National Addictions Vigilance Intervention and Prevention Program . It includes self-assessments from 15,963 teenagers, ages 13 to 18, who answered questions online about their motivations for drug and alcohol use from 2014 through 2022.

The findings do not reflect why teenagers might experiment with drugs for the first time; all were flagged for substance use disorder and subsequent treatment.

Nearly three-quarters — 73% — said they used "to feel mellow, calm or relaxed." Forty-four percent used drugs, such as marijuana, as sleep aides.

The same percentage cited drug use as a way to "stop worrying about a problem or forget bad memories." And 40% said they used to cope with depression or anxiety.

Dr. Leslie Walker-Harding, chief academic officer and senior vice president at Seattle Children's Hospital, said that 75% of young people with a substance use disorder also have a mental health condition.

"We know that the two go together," she said. "If you have a kid who you think might not be using very much, but say they're using to feel less depressed or to stop worrying, that's a really big warning sign" that they need help.

The findings are consistent with previous research and point to an ongoing need for mental health services that target kids.

It's important to understand why teens use or misuse drugs, so the right resources and education can help them, Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, wrote in an email.

"Early prevention interventions are crucial to support teens who may turn to drug use to cope with stress, anxiety or depression," Volkow said. Neither Volkow nor Walker-Harding were involved with the new research.

The majority — 84% — used a form of marijuana. This comes amid growing evidence linking cannabis use and psychotic disorders .

Less than half (49%) said they drank alcohol and 19% of surveyed teens reported misusing prescription drugs like pain relievers and sedatives.

"We worry about kids using cannabis, alcohol and nicotine because we know long term, it's going to take a toll on their mental health and their physical health," said Dr. Sharon Levy, chief of the Division of Addiction Medicine at Boston Children's Hospital. "What's really scary is the opioids, because the consequences of opioid use are immediate and can be fatal." Levy was not involved with the CDC report.

Half of the teens said they did drugs by themselves, without anyone else around — greatly increasing their risk for deadly overdoses , "especially given the proliferation of counterfeit pills resembling prescription drugs and containing illegal drugs," the study authors wrote.

"Parents need to know this," Walker-Harding said. "A lot of kids, when they die and overdose in their home, they're in their room and nobody saw it happening."

Addiction experts, including those at the CDC , urge parents and caregivers to educate kids about the risks of using drugs alone. That includes providing naloxone to reverse opioid overdoses.

"Sometimes people perceive that this is a hard conversation. It's only hard because of our own internal difficulty with it," Walker-Harding said. "Kids will talk if they think somebody's willing to listen."

Levy advised examining the culture of drugs and alcohol in the U.S.: "If you're happy, drink to celebrate. If you're stressed, drink to relax. Oh my gosh, this candidate that I don't like is winning. I better go have a drink."

"You hear that all the time. This is the soup kids are swimming in," she said. "Parents are one of the very few potential places for counterbalance."

Hyderabad: ‘Report drug abuse; we’ll help, not arrest’

H YDERABAD: “Have you watched Arjun Reddy?” “Yes!” screamed a gathering of over 2,500 students from more than 12 colleges loudly in response to psychiatrist Dr Divya Devulapally’s simple question. The psychologist was just getting started with her presentation on teenage drug abuse and how to deal with it during the Anti-Drug Abuse Summit at BITS Pilani, Hyderabad campus, on Saturday afternoon.

“Be it this recent film or the much older film, Devdas, there are popular film references to show how youngsters take to drugs to deal with their overwhelming emotions. The response to the ‘glamourisation’ of drugs is more when they demonise drugs,” she pointed out.

However, what starts as a habit to reduce anxiety, messes with the dopamine production in the long run and gets a person hooked to drugs for a very long time, explained Dr Ramya, a consultant psychiatrist at AIG Hospitals.

“The earlier one starts consuming drugs, the easier it is for them to get hooked to drugs and fall prey to dependence and addiction,” said Dr Ramya. “This is what we call the ‘age of first use’. Someone who starts consuming substances at 13 years is likely to get addicted to drugs quicker than one who starts at 18 years of age,” she elaborated.

Initially, drugs would give the user a ‘high’ so much so that if they do not consume the substance, they start feeling displeasure and then they start abusing drugs to compensate for the lack of pleasure, the experts highlighted.

How do drugs affect the teenage brain?

The two doctors explained how prolonged substance use inadvertently affects the youngsters’ brain. “Substance use commonly affects four neurotransmitters - dopamine, acetylcholine, GABA and serotonin - which ultimately hinders muscle coordination, memory ability and mood regulation,” said Dr Ramya.

Dr Ramya said, “Alcohol slows one’s reaction time and leads to memory lapses whereas marijuana results in significant decline of an individual’s IQ,” she said. What’s common is that all substances affect the overall health of an individual.

We are here to help: Sandeep Shandilya

Speaking earlier at the summit, director of Telangana State Anti-Narcotics Bureau (TSNAB) Sandeep Shandilya recalled how his childhood friend got introduced to drugs during his teenage years.

“In the 1970s, my friend captained the Indian Kabaddi team at age of 16. During an international match, he was introduced to substances. From there on, till he died, at the age of 45, he was abusing drugs on a daily basis,” Shandilya said.

The TSNAB director narrated how after a point, the boy’s parents had to give him `100 a day so that he can consume drugs and not lose control of himself or indulge in any untoward incident. “Think of how much pain it would have caused the parents? They were taking care of a dying child,” Shandilya questioned rhetorically.

Shandilya insisted that parents play a vital role in identifying drug abuse among their children and facilitating them in seeking help. Adding that friends also have a significant role, he said, “If your friend is consuming substances, please report it to us at the earliest. We will not arrest them. We are here to help them,” Shandilya said, reiterating that the goal was to find the main chain of suppliers and end the drug menace in the state.

Drug Abuse The Truth About Drugs

Before We Get Started… • I am here to EDUCATE you and provide you with true, FACTUAL information (not my opinion) • Life is all about choices; I cannot make these choices for you. What I can do is provide you with factual information so that you have the ability to make informed decisions. • Knowledge = Power (sounds cheesy, but it’s true!) • http://www.drugfreeworld.org/#/documentaries/truth-about-drugs-documentary-intro (8min)

Statistics • Alcohol isthemostcommonlyused and abuseddrugoverall (otherthancaffeine) • Alcohol-relatedincidents (car accidents, alcohol poisoning, etc.) are the 2nd leading cause of teendeath in the US. 1st cause= car accident • Legal drinkingage: 21 • Marijuanaisthemostcommonlyusedillegaldrug

Why do people take drugs? • To fit in • To escape or relax • To relieve boredom • To seem grown up • To rebel • To experiment • What else? People believe drugs are the solution. But eventually, drugs become the problem.

Misuse vs. Abuse • Drug Misuse- taking or using medicine in a way that is not intended. • Ex: taking 4 Tylenol for a headache instead of the recommended 1-2 • Drug Abuse- intentionally using drugs in a way that is unhealthy or illegal. • Ex: taking a prescription medicine that is not prescribed to you • Ex: taking a prescription medicine as it was not intended (taking a pain killer to achieve a “high” and not to relieve pain) Which is worse?

Addiction • Despite knowing how horrible, dangerous, and expensive addiction is, people still try drugs every day. Why? They think that they are different—that they will not get addicted. • Addiction does not discriminate— rich, poor, urban, rural, good family life, bad family life, educated, illiterate, young or old. • NO ONE is invincible.

How Do Drugs Work? • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5f1nmqiHIII

Vocabulary • Synthetic- man-made • Gateway- leading to other drugs • Tolerance- when a person’s body becomes used to a drug or medicine and needs greater and greater amounts of it to feel the same effect -Does this cause the gateway effect?? • Potency- strength of drug • Carcinogen- cancer-causing chemicals

Vocabulary, cont. • Euphoria- intense feelings of wellbeing, happiness, excitement, and joy; drug users feel this during a “high” • Illicit- illegal • Rehabilitation- the process of medical and psychological treatment for dependence on drugs or alcohol (helps people recover from addiction)

Consequences of Drug Use • Teens who use illegal drugs may stop pursuing their interests and goals • May lead to other risky behaviors (such as?) • Drug use is a leading factor in teen depression and suicide • Drug use is directly related to violence • Drug use puts a burden on family and friends.

7 Categories of Drugs • Depressants- Slow down activity in the brain and body; decrease heart rate and blood pressure • Stimulants- Speed up activity in the brain and body; increase heart rate and blood pressure • Hallucinogens- Cause user to perceive things differently than they actually are; user may see things that are not really there

Categories of Drugs Cont. • Pain Killer/Dissociative Anesthetics- inhibit pain by cutting off the brain’s perception of pain • Pain Killer/Narcotic Analgesics- relieve pain and induce euphoria; create mood changes in the user • Inhalants- Breathable substances that produce mind-altering results and effects. • Cannabis- Marijuana • Active ingredient that causes high= tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) • WAY more THC in today’s marijuana than in the 60s/70s- more dangerous and addictive

Alcohol • Depressant • Short-term effects- impaired judgment, coordination, slurred speech, memory loss • Long-term effects- liver damage, increased risk of heart disease, decreased brain function, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (pregnant motherchild) • Binge Drinking (5+ drinks in a short period of time) can lead to alcoholism. What’s a “drink”? • It is illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to buy, possess, or consume alcohol. • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQ7oqmikZDQ • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHVd_ydoG8s • http://www.snagfilms.com/films/title/haze_abridged 36min

Marijuana • Cannabis. Slang terms? • Short-term effects- Memory problems, distorted perceptions (sights, sounds, time, touch), trouble thinking and problem-solving, loss of coordination, increase heart rate, and anxiety. • Long-term effects- Can cause psychotic symptoms, depression, damage to heart and lungs, weakens immune system and affects hormones.

Marijuana • Vs. Cigarettes • marijuana still has carcinogens, just like ciggs • 5 joints=full pack of cigarettes (more smoke, deeper inhalation, etc) Medical use? • For the average, healthy person, marijuana has NO health benefits (see above) • The only time marijuana is helpful medically is when a person is extremely sick. For example, cancer patients may need it in order to have an appetite/be able to eat. Would you want to get chemo as a healthy person? • Gateway or Stepping Stone Drug? http://www.mtv.com/shows/truelife/true-life-im-addicted-to-marijuana/1687401/playlist/#id=1687401

Heroin • Pain killer; extremely addictive • Short-term effects- Clouded thinking, nausea and vomiting, heart functions and breathing severely slowed; user can become addicted after just one use • Long-term effects- Collapsed veins, soft-tissue infections, liver and kidney damage, diseases from injection (HIV/AIDS) and death from overdose

Prescription Drugs • Must be prescribed by a medical professional • OxyContin- painkiller just as addictive and potent as heroin • Vicodin- painkiller • Valium- depressant Prescription pills are responsible for more overdose deaths in the US than cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine and amphetamines combined.

Pain Killers • Pain Killers only mask the pain for which they are taken and do not “cure” anything. • Short-term effects- physical dependence with severe withdrawal symptoms ; severe pain until next dose is taken • Long-term effects- Liver damage, mood changes, and death from overdose. • One of the hardest addictions to ‘kick’

Inhalants • Inhalant category– obviously  • Short-term effects- slurred speech, impaired judgment, nausea, coughing, nosebleeds, fatigue, and lack of coordination; death by heart attack or suffocation; Starves body of oxygen. • Long-term effects- Lose sense of smell, nausea and nosebleeds, may develop liver, lung and kidney problems. Loss of muscle mass, tone and strength.

Ecstasy • Hallucinogen; synthetic drug made in laboratory • Also known as MDMA, Molly, etc. • Mixing Ecstasy & alcohol is extremely dangerous • Short-term effects- Impaired judgment, confusion, depression, anxiety, paranoia, teeth clenching, sweating, and severe dehydration which can lead to death after first use • Long-term effects- Permanent brain damage affecting the person’s judgment and thinking ability.

Methamphetamines(Crystal Meth) • Stimulant; synthetic • Short-term effects- aggression, irritability, anxiety, hyperactivity, delusions of power, hallucinations, paranoia and convulsions resulting in death. • Long-term effects- Increased heart rate and blood pressure, damage to blood vessels in brain leading to strokes or irregular heartbeat and death. Liver, kidney and lung damage. Brain damage including memory and inability to grasp thoughts. Severe mood swings.

Crystal Meth Ingredients • Acetone • Anhydrous Ammonia • Battery Acid • Chloroform • Drain Cleaner • Freon • Rubbing Alcohol • Iodine One of the hardest addictions to break http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/meth/body/faces.html

Cocaine • Stimulant • Short-term effects- can’t sleep or eat properly. Increased heart rate, muscle spasms and seizures. Paranoia, anger, anxiety. Heart attack and stroke that can cause immediate death. • Long-term effects- Irritability, mood disturbances, hallucinations, paranoia, depression

Crack • Stimulant; most potent form of cocaine • Short-term effects- same as cocaine • Long-term effects- damage to heart, liver and kidneys. Sleep deprivation and malnutrition. Extreme tolerance build up

LSD and PCP • Hallucinogens- derived from an extremely poisonous fungus plant • Short-term effects- High body temperature, increase heart rate and blood pressure, loss of appetite, tremors (intense body shaking). Severe, terrifying thoughts and feelings, fear of losing control, fear of insanity and death, and feelings of despair. May commit suicide due to a bad “trip” • Long-term effects- Flashbacks, long lasting psychosis (basically being out of touch with reality, not being able to communicate clearly; a permanent feeling of being “out of it”)

Drugs are NOT cool. The kids your age who THINK they are cool are going to be living in their parents’ basement at age 30 and will be total LOSERS…. Trust me. If you mess around with drugs, assume you will become an addict, or worse…

Officials hear opioid settlement funds update.

LEWISTOWN — Mifflin County Commissioners heard a presentation Thursday addressing opioid addiction in the community.

The highlight of the board’s meeting was an informative presentation by Micaela Mills, fiscal officer for the Juniata Valley Tri-County Drug & Alcohol Abuse Commission.

Mills provided an overview of the current drug and alcohol services in Mifflin, Juniata and Huntingdon counties and outlined how the opioid settlement funds have been instrumental in expanding treatment and remediation efforts for Opioid Use Disorder.

“My office is responsible for funding and supporting drug and alcohol treatment, prevention, intervention and case management services to the residents of our communities,” Mills stated, emphasizing the comprehensive approach taken by her office in tackling substance abuse issues.

The Opioid Settlement funds, awarded to Mifflin County and other jurisdictions as part of nationwide settlements with opioid manufacturers, distributors, and pharmacies, have been a game-changer for local opioid remediation efforts.

According to Mills, Mifflin County entered into a Memorandum of Understanding in 2022 with the Juniata Valley Tri-County Drug & Alcohol Abuse Commission to establish and expand opioid remediation programs previously hindered by financial constraints or sustainability issues.

Mills highlighted that a two-county advisory council was formed. It consists of key figures from Mifflin and Juniata Counties, including County Commissioners and leaders of partner agencies. The council is responsible for overseeing and evaluating the programming.

To date, Mifflin County has received $203,912.96 in opioid settlement funding, which has been allocated to the Tri-County Drug & Alcohol Commission as per the terms of the memorandum.

Mills outlined several key initiatives that have been implemented or expanded with the aid of these funds, including the integration of drug and alcohol support services into the existing mental health crisis line, medication assisted treatment within the Mifflin County Correctional Facility, and extensive re-entry and recovery support services for individuals transitioning from incarceration.

The funds have facilitated the expansion of prevention, intervention, and treatment services, such as school-based programs, Naloxone distribution, and medication take-back initiatives. Efforts to reduce the stigma surrounding addiction and opioid disorders have also been amplified, along with training and education opportunities for staff within the addiction field.

Mills concluded her speech by reiterating the commission’s commitment to continuing the expansion of effective programming and introducing new initiatives to meet the needs of residents affected by addiction.

For more information about drug or alcohol services, contact the Tri-County office at (717) 242-1446 or visit juniatavalleydrugandalcohol.com.

In other matters, Commissioners adopted a resolution that aligns with broader state-level priorities set forth by the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania for the year 2024.

These priorities, selected by Pennsylvania counties, reflect a proactive legislative agenda aimed at addressing some of the most pressing issues faced by counties across the Commonwealth.

The resolution underscored the paramount importance of securing additional funding for 911 operations, emphasizing the current funding levels have not kept pace with the increasing costs necessary for quick and efficient emergency response services. This issue was designated as the top priority for Pennsylvania counties in 2024.

Furthermore, the resolution highlighted the urgent need for an increase in county mental health base funding. The aim is to ensure that residents can access a broad spectrum of community-based mental health services, including residential programs, family-based support, outpatient care, and crisis intervention. Such services are deemed critical for the well-being of constituents and the overall health of communities.

Addressing the challenges faced by county inmates with mental health issues was identified as the third priority. The resolution calls for better approaches to serve incarcerated individuals experiencing severe mental illnesses, reflecting a commitment to both public safety and humane treatment.

The resolution also called for an increase in the state prevailing wage threshold, which has remained unchanged since 1961, and outlined the necessity for Right-to-Know Law reforms to manage the increasing volume and complexity of record requests effectively.

Vote-by-mail reforms, including clarifications surrounding drop boxes, ballot curing, expanded pre-canvassing time, and adjustments to the mail-in ballot application deadline, were identified as the sixth priority, aiming to streamline and secure the voting process.

Broadband access and development were highlighted as the seventh priority, acknowledging the critical need to expand access to enhance economic vitality and improve the quality of life for residents.

Finally, the resolution addressed the juvenile detention capacity crisis as the eighth priority, advocating for timely community-based services for justice-involved youth and ensuring their safety, as well as that of the community.

The resolution concluded with a commitment from Mifflin County to collaborate with the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania and other counties throughout the Commonwealth in support of these priorities.

The resolution aims to improve stewardship of taxpayer dollars, reduce costs, increase local flexibility, and ensure the quality of services provided by Mifflin County and other counties.

In other news, the Commissioners:

• Amended the action taken on Jan. 4, to exonerate Menno Township Tax Collector Cynthia Clever from collecting 2023 per capita tax bills to 15 total;
