5 Best Tools to Annotate and Highlight Web Pages for Research and Study

These free tools let you annotate or highlight any part of a web page to share it with others or use as reference for your research.

When you share a link with someone, the relevant part is just a tiny snippet or two. Use these free tools to annotate or highlight the important part to draw attention to it.

All the apps in the article have a highlight marker (often with different colors) and a way to write sticky notes or comments anywhere on the page. Both features are excellent when you want to add notes for research and study, whether for your personal needs or friends. Beyond that, a few small features make each tool better for different needs.

1. Diigo (Chrome, Bookmarklet, Android, iOS): Annotations, Highlights, Comments on Any Web Page

Diigo is a simple highlighting tool for web pages that also lets you add comments and share with friends

Diigo is one of the oldest and most popular online annotation tools. Of course, it has changed a lot over the years, but it is a simple and reliable app to add highlights and comments to any web page at its core.

Available as a Chrome extension or a bookmarklet for other browsers, Diigo is intuitive to use. Select any text on any article, and you can highlight it in one of four colors. You can also add a small note to the highlight or a floating note anywhere on the page. You can also share notes with collaborators, and you can change their colors too. As Diigo says in its help section, you might want to mentally assign a specific purpose to each color, thus keeping your highlights organized for your eyes.

All annotations on a page can be seen quickly through the extension shortcut. You can also view and organize annotations in the web dashboard for Diigo. You can create groups in Diigo and share annotations and highlights with them and as PDFs.

Diigo is also a bookmark app, saving each page and its annotations to your account and syncing it across devices. On phones, Diigo is available as a standalone browser with many of the same features.

2. Smort (Web): Annotate and Edit Articles to Share With Friends

Smort is a no-installation annotation tool to highlight text or fully edit and change the text in online articles before sharing with friends

Most annotation apps will only let you add highlights, sticky notes, and comments to the article. Smort enables you to change the article contents itself, remove entire paragraphs or images, add text, etc. And you don't need to install anything to do this either.

When you want to share any article, add "smort.io" before the URL and press Enter to open it in the Smort editor. Here, you can edit the article as you see fit, with a simple Markdown editor to change text and text formatting. Smort also supports highlights of four different colors, so you can add a note at the top of the article about what each color means. There are handy Undo and Redo buttons at the top if you make any mistakes.

Smort auto-generates a table of contents for each article to make navigation easier. As the editor, you can also switch between four different font types and a dark or light mode for easier reading. Once you've finished editing, click the Share button to generate a unique link that lasts for seven days from creation. After that, if you make further edits, you'll need to regenerate a new link and reshare.

3. Spade (Chrome): Privately Annotate and Highlight Web Pages

Spade is a fast and slick app to privately write annotations and notes on any web page

Spade is an excellent free tool to aid your research for essays and papers while keeping it private. It's a Chrome browser extension with annotation and highlighting abilities and a few other neat tricks like citations and machine-learning analysis.

Once you install the extension, Spade appears as a little button in one of the four corners of every web page (customizable by you). Click the button to expand a toolbar that has an annotation pen to draw or scribble anywhere and a highlight marker. You can control the point size for each and choose from seven different colors. Spade also lets you form a text box anywhere on the page to write notes and has a simple eraser to take it all away. All these highlights are shared and synced to your Spade web account so that you can access them anywhere.

In our tests, sharing a page made in Spade didn't show the annotations or highlights to the recipient. Nonetheless, you can export any annotated page as a PDF file with all notes intact.

Apart from these annotation features, Spade includes a built-in citation tool for research papers that automatically cites pages in leading journals. It also uses machine learning to rate a web page's credibility and summarizes large text into precis.

4. Hypothes.is (Web, Chrome): Collaborative Annotations and Highlights on the Web

Hypothes.is is the best free app to annotate and highlight web pages collaborating with friends, and even writing comments and notes

If you're working with a study group or a team on a research project that needs to share links with annotations, Hypothesis is as good as it gets. This Chrome extension is much lighter than others and focuses on the ability to collaborate. Plus, it's ad-free and has no hidden costs or restrictions.

All users will need to sign up for a Hypothesis account before installing the extension. Then, create a private group if you wish to keep your shares confidential with your friends, or use the default Public tab let anyone see the annotations.

On any web page, you can select text to turn it into a highlight or an annotation (i.e., highlight with a note). Each of these shows up in your Hypothesis sidebar in chronological order for that page. Collaborators can add comments and reply to each annotation individually. You can also add a note on any page which appears in the Notes section.

The Hypothesis web dashboard makes it easy to search through all your highlights and notes. Along with a full-text search, you can add advanced operators (like username, group name, URL, or tag) to find what you're looking for quickly.

5. LINER (Browsers, Mobile): Best Cross-Platform Highlight Tool, Also for YouTube

Liner is one of the best online annotation apps and has been for years, especially with its recent updates. Its broad support for different platforms makes it the go-to choice if you're switching between phones, tablets, and computers but need one place to collect all your highlights.

Once you create an account and log in, you can select any text to highlight it. You can also add a comment to any highlight and share this with friends and collaborators. The free basic account only lets you work with one color for the highlighter and limits you to 15 highlights per page. For more colors and unlimited highlights, you need the Premium package.

Liner also works with YouTube, which makes it stand apart. You can highlight any part of a YouTube video, much like highlighting text on a web page. This worked well for us on browsers but not on mobiles.

The app has a few other features worth checking out, like how it shows the most popular highlights by other users on any page. And the dashboard can distinguish between text and video highlights.

Use Colors as Your Own Organizing System

Whichever annotation tool you use, there's a nifty hack suggested by multiple users and app blogs. Since most of them let you use different colors for highlighting or annotation, use these colors for your own tagging or organizing system.

For example, when you highlight text in yellow, it means "worth reading," but when you highlight it in red, it means "use as-is in the research paper." Do that for all the colors. No one other than you needs to know what each color signifies, but as long as you are consistent with how you use them, it'll give you a useful system.

How-To Geek

5 great programs for editing and annotating pdfs.

Want to annotate, sign, or otherwise edit a PDF? You'll need a dedicated PDF editing program for that. Here are our favorite picks.

Read update

Checked content for accuracy. Updated PDF Architect 7 to version 8.

Quick Links

What is a pdf, what to look for in pdf editing software, best overall pdf editor: adobe acrobat pro dc, best adobe alternative: pdf architect 8, best free pdf editor: xodo, best for teams and enterprise: iskysoft pdf editor, best for annotation: pdfescape.

Creating or reading a PDF is simple enough, but if you want to edit or annotate a PDF without changing it to a different format (or disturbing its layout), you'll need to have a dedicated PDF editor on hand.

UPDATE: 9/30/21

PDF is short for Portable Document Format. The file format was created in the early 1990s by Adobe co-founder John Warnock , and was designed with two ends: to provide a standardized document type that could be read on any hardware or operating system, and to create a document type whose layout wouldn't be changed as it was viewed across these differing systems and hardware. Today, you can open and read PDFs through your browser, or by using a dedicated PDF reader or word processor, but you'll need separate software if you want to edit or annotate one.

PDF editors are a different beast than PDF readers or word processors. They're designed to handle one specific format and perform a limited number of tasks within that format. Here are the important features any good PDF editing software should have:

  • Editing Abilities:  It goes without saying that whichever program you choose should let you crack open a PDF and edit it. Whether you want to modify wording, insert and resize images, or change the order of the pages within a larger document, the best PDF editors should be able to handle whatever you throw at them.
  • Annotation Support:  The ability to allow single or collaborative annotation and markup is paramount. Good PDF editors should offer helpful annotation tools like highlighting, sticky notes, comment boxes, message stamps (like "approved" or "confidential"), or even freehand notes.
  • Security:  PDF editors should offer several security options for protecting sensitive data contained within your PDFs. In addition to simple password protection, some programs let you set access permissions, work with redaction tools, and even apply watermarks. These programs should support secure document signing as well.

Adobe Acrobat Pro DC

Since Adobe invented PDFs over 25 years ago, it stands to reason that it should also offer the best option for editing them. Adobe Acrobat Pro DC ($14.99/month) proves why it remains the industry standard for PDF management. The software is available for Windows and macOS systems, as iOS and Android apps, and as a Google Drive add-on .

Adobe makes it easy to create, edit, and sign PDFs (and track their activity) with its modern, intuitive interface. The software lets you compare two versions to spot differences, convert a PDF into several other formats, turn scanned documents into editable and searchable PDFs, and even edit on the fly on your smartphone.

The software can handle more advanced tasks, like adding watermarks, bookmarks, and headers; redacting or removing hidden sensitive information; and adding audio and video. And signing a PDF? No problem. Get real-time status updates when collecting legally binding signatures, and get certificate signatures. Adobe also handles simultaneous live collaboration for editing and annotating, stamps with messages, and comment exporting to Microsoft Word. Overall, if there's something you need to do to a PDF (and if you want to look right and stay secure), Adobe Acrobat is your best choice.

PDF Architect 8 with features

If you want a PDF editor that looks and works similar to Adobe without the Adobe price tag, check out PDFForge's PDF Architect 8 (Free, with paid options). With the app, you can open and read any PDF file, view two documents simultaneously for comparison, create PDFs from Microsoft documents or by scanning a document, and reorder, delete, or move pages within your PDF.

If you need more functionality than that, however, you'll need to upgrade to one of Architect's paid plans, which start at $69/year. In addition to the features of the free plan, paid plans give you additional functionality, like splitting PDFs into multiple documents, editing and moving text, changing font style and size, inserting page numbers and headers, inserting and editing media, adding watermarks, and converting your PDF to a variety of other formats. The biggest potential downside is that PDF Architect is only available in your browser and doesn't have companion mobile apps.

Xodo PDF Editor

Xodo (Free) is a great option for those who need to edit a PDF but don't have the budget (or the desire to shell out) for a premium PDF editor. Despite being free, Xodo still packs a punch with its robust features and beautiful, modern interface (which is available online, and as iOS and Android apps). Xodo focuses on giving you a simple, clean functionality, instead of burying your document in a complicated and cluttered interface as many other editors do.

Xodo is a great option for signing documents, as it lets you create a signature with a stylus or your finger, and you can save it to use on additional future documents. Filling in forms is also a piece of cake---all you have to do is tap the field and type in your information. Want to annotate a PDF? Xodo's ample tools let you highlight and strike out passages, add sticky notes, underline for emphasis, and make freehand drawings. It even creates a summary list of annotations, which you can jump to simply by tapping on one.

If you need to have a real-time, collaborative workspace, it supports that as well, letting anyone with access jump into work and even chat. Once you've created your document, you can sync it with Dropbox or Google Drive, ensuring you're always working with the latest version. Easy and beautiful.

iSkysoft PDF Editor

iSkySoft PDF Editor (starts at $69/year) is a solid PDF editor for individuals and it offers support for businesses as well. It has competitive pricing options for small businesses, starting at $109 per user per year, which it backs with team management. iSkySoft's enterprise tier offers custom pricing for groups over 20, and it comes with dedicated tech support, user licensing management, on-demand development, and flexible deployment.

The PDF editor is available to both Windows and macOS users (but not as a mobile app), and it works in nine languages. Its rich interface gives you a Microsoft Word-like experience for easy annotating and editing. It lets you convert PDFs from or to other formats; create forms; edit the layout and text of your PDF; add, remove, and manipulate images; insert, remove, or flip pages within it, and lock them down with passwords, redaction tools, and permissions.

Should you want to annotate a PDF, you can enjoy doing so with drawing features, sticky notes, stamps, and comments at your fingertips, plus iSkySoft supports multi-user collaboration. One of iSkySoft's most impressive features is its optical character recognition technology, which identifies scanned text from another document and then turns it into an editable and searchable image-based PDF.

PDFescape

For those who will primarily be annotating PDFs rather than creating or otherwise editing them, PDFescape (Free) is a terrific program for doing so. Although its interface is far more dated than the other options, it's still fairly easy to navigate and it has all of the basic tools you'll need for annotating and lightly editing/adjusting a PDF. You can add text and images, freehand draw, whiteout or highlight existing text, add sticky notes, and add in links. It also lets you add lines, arrows, circles, rectangles, checkmarks, and strikeout text.

The basic plan gets you free online PDF annotation abilities and basic editing, as well as the ability to create forms and share your PDF documents. If you need more functionality, consider upgrading to the PDF Premium plan, which is fairly inexpensive at $5.99/month (or $2.99/month if you opt for an annual plan). This plan gives you far more editing features, if you need those in addition to annotation tools. If you want to edit existing text, download the desktop version .

25 Best Annotation Software Tools (Free & Paid Apps)

In this post, we will dive into the 25 best annotation software tools that you can use for your specific personal and business needs.

đź’ˇ KEY INSIGHTS

  • Flexibility in annotation tools is crucial for adapting to various data types and annotation needs.
  • Advanced annotation tools significantly reduce the time required for data labeling through automation features.
  • Ensuring data privacy and security is a paramount consideration when choosing annotation tools for sensitive projects.
  • After evaluating numerous options, we selected the top 25 annotation tools, with PDF Reader Pro ranking as #1 for its comprehensive features.
Each tool comes with its pros and cons and there is a tool suited for every need.

There are advanced online annotation tools that exist to make our lives easier , from editing notes to summarizing important information, keeping track of to-do lists, all the way to editing images and video.

We use these tools every single day and all of which have their own unique features and can help us accomplish our everyday tasks with ease.

So, What Are Annotation Tools?

3 things to consider when choosing an annotation tool, 25 best annotation tools (free and paid).

Important disclosure: we're proud affiliates of some tools mentioned in this guide. If you click an affiliate link and subsequently make a purchase, we will earn a small commission at no additional cost to you (you pay nothing extra).

Simply put, they are text or drawing tools that help us add information to text, video, or image documents and various content pieces.

They can also be used in many different types of databases, such as Scale and Doccano.

There are countless tools out there and our job is to make the search easier for you.

Each tool has its particular uses , depending on your annotation goals, there will be different options for every need.

👉🏼 There are countless paid and free apps that are available on the market today.

One of the first things to consider when deciding which is best for you is the price (or perhaps no price at all).

Whether your choice is free or paid, consider the features that come with both versions, you may be getting a great deal with the paid versions that allow you to use all the features within the app at a low cost.

On the flip side, a free tool may be best if you are using the basic features on the app and see no reason to pay for extra features. It all depends on what you plan to use the app for.

2. The Functionality

This is probably one of the most important points to consider.

Ask yourself

  • What will I be doing with this tool?
  • Why am I using this tool?
  • What can this tool do for me to make my life easier?
To make this decision simple, the tool should have the functionality you are looking for.
  • Will you be using the tool for studies and taking down notes ?
  • Will you be editing documents on a large scale and need fast and accurate software that saves you time?

Each tool possesses its own set of functional features and suits every person's specific needs.

3. Quality And Efficiency

This point all comes down to how well does the app run and how well it performs the tasks it needs to.

Many free tools may not always detect every error that needs correcting or a phrase that can be worded differently.

This is usually a consequence of insufficient QA (Quality Assurance) from the software itself.

👉🏼 Paid versions of some tools provide a more trustworthy base for picking up on errors .

However, the price may not always be worth the extra efficiency that the tool provides and there are still some effective free tools on the market, just with fewer features.

Now that you have a foundation to build upon, here are 25 tools that have made the list, both free and paid versions.

We will dive into each one's pros and cons so that you can make the best decision for your annotation wants and needs.

About Annotation app

Annotations allow users to collaborate, review documents, and add information according to context. They enable reviewers to offer feedback, editors to propose changes, and collaborators to communicate without modifying the original text.

Different file types allow users to annotate text. But processing files of a particular kind often requires specialized software that takes up a lot of space and sometimes is not free. However, you will not install a software package that is ten gigabytes or more and even pay for it to view one file. Also, you can get the file on your mobile phone, but many software packages still need mobile versions. Of course, you can get to the computer, but sometimes it takes time, and the computer may not have the necessary software.

This free online application based on the GroupDocs.Annotation API annotates files on your device. We value your privacy, so the file is visible to you only. The application works on any device, including smartphones.

Title: label-efficient model selection for text generation.

Abstract: Model selection for a given target task can be costly, as it may entail extensive annotation of the quality of outputs of different models. We introduce DiffUse, an efficient method to make an informed decision between candidate text generation models. DiffUse reduces the required amount of preference annotations, thus saving valuable time and resources in performing evaluation. DiffUse intelligently selects instances by clustering embeddings that represent the semantic differences between model outputs. Thus, it is able to identify a subset of examples that are more informative for preference decisions. Our method is model-agnostic, and can be applied to any text generation model. Moreover, we propose a practical iterative approach for dynamically determining how many instances to annotate. In a series of experiments over hundreds of model pairs, we demonstrate that DiffUse can dramatically reduce the required number of annotations -- by up to 75% -- while maintaining high evaluation reliability.

ICSE Exams 2024: Check Preparation Strategy For Chemistry Paper

Consistent effort, strategic preparation and effective time management are crucial for performing well in the chemistry exam..

ICSE Exams 2024: Check Preparation Strategy For Chemistry Paper

Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) will soon conduct the board exams for the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) or Class 10 and Indian School Certificate (ISC) Class 12 exams. The written examination of ICSE Class 10 will begin from February 21, 2024 and will conclude by March 28, 2024. While the board exam for ISC Class 12 will begin from February 12, 2024 and end on April 3, 2024.

Preparation tips for ICSE Chemistry paper Class 10 The Chemistry paper for ICSE has two sections. Section A comprises of 40 marks, which includes objective type, case study-based and short answer questions. While, Section B has 6 questions from which students can choose 4.

Highlighting on the preparation strategy, Vibha Gupta, principal, Orchids The International School, says, "The first 15 minutes of the paper need to be most effectively used, where students must read the paper critically. This time should be utilised to decide the four questions out of the total six that the students would want to attempt from Section B."

Promoted Listen to the latest songs, only on JioSaavn.com

The students must memorise important chemical reactions, equations and formulae, adds Ms Gupta. "This includes understanding reaction mechanisms, chemical equations and balancing reactions, which are crucial for both theoretical understanding and practical application. Solving sample papers and past papers is important for students to familiarise themselves with the exam pattern, question types, and time management. They must analyse their  performance, identify weak areas, and work on improving them."

The students must allocate time wisely during the exam, notes MS Gupta. "The time should be divided effectively between different sections and questions based on their marks and complexity. They must prioritise questions that they are confident about to maximise their score, adds Ms Gupta. "All the questions and subquestions from one section should be attempted together. The students must consolidate their understanding of key concepts, reactions, and theories through thorough revision sessions. Remember, consistent effort, strategic preparation, and effective time management are key to performing well in the chemistry exam," she adds.

Piracy app Kimi overtook Netflix on the App Store before Apple removed it

Earlier this week, a vision-testing app shot up the charts on the iOS App Store. Kimi claimed to be an app iPhone owners could use to test their eyesight, but after downloading it, those users were instead presented with a sizable collection of pirated movies and TV shows. Apple finally removed the app on Tuesday, but not before Kimi made waves on the App Store.

While Kimi’s rise to power was short-lived, the app had been available on the iOS, iPadOS, and macOS App Stores since September 2023. It’s unclear how or why it remained on the App Store for so long without being noticed, but Appfigures says downloads of the app spiked this Sunday and Monday. 65,000 downloads in two days undoubtedly put Kimi in Apple’s crosshairs, and the company quickly killed it over a multitude of App Store rule violations.

Kimi’s sudden popularity and inevitable axing call to mind the Popcorn Time era , another movie piracy app that flourished on a variety of platforms in the late 2010s.

Illegal and malicious apps occasionally sneak their way through the cracks on both Google Play and the App Store, but Apple has been on a somewhat inauspicious streak in recent weeks. Just days before Kimi’s ascent, the makers of the LastPass app published a blog post warning users about a fraudulent app called “LassPass” masquerading as their app on the App Store. The fake app was promptly removed, but how did it get through in the first place?
