How to recycle books in 2024: a complete guide.

paper books old

If you’ve recently cleaned out your closets and bookshelves and have found yourself with some stacks of old textbooks, novels, and other old reads, you may be tempted to throw your old books in the trash.  But not so fast. There are lots of eco-friendly ways to recycle or upcycle your old reading material to breathe new life into old pages and to keep paper waste out of landfills.

From the best places to resell books ( how to find the value of your old books) to the top tips for recycling textbooks and more, read on for a complete guide on the best ways to recycle books in 2024 .  It may help you make a little extra spending cash, and you can rest easy in the knowledge that your old books will be put to good use.

Why Recycle Books?

Sell your books, donate your old books, give them away, upcycle books, recycle your old books, can you recycle books, how do you recycle paperback books, can hardcover books be recycled, can textbooks be recycled, why can’t wet books be recycled.

Recycling your books has so many benefits.  It reduces landfill waste, helps to conserve natural resources and can even earn you a bit of money too.

paper books old

That’s a lot of benefits!

What’s more, recycled paper reduces the need to cut down more trees for wood pulp.  Today, it’s estimated that only 33% of paper pulp is sourced from recycled paper.  However, by increasing the number of books that get recycled, you’ll also boost the amount of recycled paper pulp that can be used to create new paper goods.

Beyond that, recycling books can also be used to raise money for important causes.  And, if you hate waste, it can be helpful to know that your old books will be put to good use.

How to Recycle Books in 2024

Recycling rules may change occasionally, and the best sites to donate books may vary too. We’ve compiled the following list to help you find the most up-to-date information about how to recycle books in 2024; this way, you won’t have to throw away books. From where to recycle books to the best places to sell them, you’ll find everything you need right here to get rid of thousands of books.

sell back your books for more

One easy way to declutter your bookshelf and make a bit of extra cash is to sell your books on websites like BookScouter .  Simply look up your book’s ISBN number into the helpful search bar, and you’ll receive a list of online vendors who are willing to pay the top dollar for your used books.  After that, all that’s left to do is print out your prepaid shipping label, mail your books to the vendor of your choosing and wait to receive your payment.

While BookScouter is a wonderful resource for newer books and textbooks, if you have older antique or vintage books without ISBN numbers , you may want to try eBay or AbeBooks instead.  These websites specialize in older and out of print books, so they are a great resource for anyone with an older library collection.

Depending on how old your textbooks are, you may also be able to sell them back to your local college campus bookstore.  That means that, if you’re a current student, you can dramatically reduce the costs of your textbooks by selling your books back at the end of the semester.

Once you’ve read an old book, there’s no need to throw it out.  Instead, put it to good use by donating it to a charity of your choice.

One of the best places to donate books is a thrift store. Goodwill , Salvation Army , BetterWorldBooks and small local thrift stores are usually more than happy to accept gently used books and the proceeds from reselling them will help to support the charity.  To find a local charity in your area, try out this locator .

Books and some educational magazines can also be donated to your local public school or library ; however, it can help to call ahead and ask if they’re actively accepting donations.  Some libraries hold annual book sales to raise funds for library programs and only accept book donations at particular times of the year.

Small local coffee shops and senior centers will often accept book donations.  Organizations, like the AAUW , will often hold book sales to raise donations too.  And, if you just need to get rid of a few books, you can always look for the nearest Little Free Library .

paper books old

While donating books to your local charity is one option, depending on where you live and your transportation options, you may have better luck giving your books away for free.  Placing an ad on websites like Craigslist.com , Bunz.com , LetGo.com or Freecycle.org will usually generate a lot of interest.  Listing your old books for free in local Facebook groups can help too.

If you live in an area with lots of foot traffic, you can also simply place your books on your front stoop or at the base of your driveway on a sunny afternoon.  Add a “Free” sign to your setup and your neighbors will usually stop by to browse.

Crafters can find tons of inspiration with old, vintage and antique books.  Browsing websites like Pinterest can help to inspire you on how to upcycle old books.  To get you started, some popular projects to try include:

  • Create an upcycled book wreath
  • Make your own bookmarks and gift tags with book pages
  • Fold some origami paper cranes
  • Upcycle old books into homemade journals and sketchpads
  • Hide clutter behind repurposed book spines

While donating or reselling your books are greener options, if your books are not in the best condition or are quite old, you may want to consider recycling them.  However, this should be the last option you consider, as it’s always better to find new ways to reuse old items if you can.

Like catalogs and phonebooks, books fall into the recycling category of “mixed paper,” which has a lower value than other recyclable goods, such as newspapers and corrugated cardboard.  Nevertheless, most U.S. papermills will recycle old textbooks, hardcovers and softcovers.

Softcover books and magazines can generally be recycled as is without deconstructing them.  However, to be safe, it’s usually best to remove the covers of any hardcover book prior to recycling as they may contain non-paper elements.  Once you remove the binding of hardcover books and textbooks, they can simply be added to your curbside recycling bin along with any old paperbacks.

Additionally, keep in mind that any book that has gotten wet or moldy should be thrown away or burned as they have no value in the recycling market.  Likewise, particularly aged books with brown or tan pages should be tossed too as they can’t be recycled.

If you need to find a book recycling center near you, this recycling locator can help!

Frequently Asked Questions

Absolutely!  Books are usually categorized as “mixed paper” for recycling purposes.  Just remember that you may need to remove the covers of hardback books first as they may contain non-paper elements.

Paperback books and magazines are usually categorized as “mixed paper” and can be added to your curbside recycling bin whole.  If in doubt, you can always call your local recycling provider to doublecheck on specific rules in your area.

Depending on your local recycling program, hardcover books may be able to be recycled as-is; however, it’s usually best to remove the covers before placing them in your curbside bin.

Textbooks are generally treated like hardcover books during the recycling process, so it’s best to remove any hardcovers from your textbooks prior to recycling.

When books get wet it can change the paper’s fiber, making it stiffer.  Additionally, paper mills are less inclined to pay money for wet books because of the added water weight.

Used books once were frequently thrown in the trash, but times are changing and there are so many other ways to reuse your reads.  From recycling your paperbacks to donating or selling your collectible books, there are plenty of ways to declutter your book shelves and help the environment while you do so. Paper waste can clog up our landfills and lead to the needless use of valuable natural resources, like trees, water and oil.  But when we recycle books, we choose a better option that is eco-friendly and often easier on our wallets too.

While we hope you found the tips included in this guide helpful, if you’re still looking for more ways to reduce your impact, other great green solutions include borrowing books from your local library, choosing to buy only secondhand books or downloading your favorite reads on your e-reader . Or, if you want to meet other readers, try out a local or online book swap and get new books for free.

30+ Creative Uses for Old Books

Updated April 2019 with more creative uses for old books including book craft ideas, fresh photos, and lots of inspiration.

12 Amazing Book Crafts to Try | Creative uses for old books

For those of you who love the written word and want it to be part of your aesthetic too, this post is for you. Pick up a new (old) book at the thrift store and get to work on one (or more) of these creative uses for old books.

I know some of you are cringing right now– how could anyone ruin a perfectly good book? Well, some books aren’t perfectly good anymore . Some are outdated, irrelevant, or already in a condition where they can’t be read anymore. So why not honor these books by finding creative uses for them that you’ll cherish?

A while back, my sister worked on a project with a library that had old books they were no longer shelving. They had tasked her with finding creative uses for the old books  to give to the library’s donors as a thank you gift . What a perfect gift for the donors who obviously value books and reading.

The further we delved into repurposing books into new beautiful objects, the more discoveries I knew you’d want to see. You may have seen some of these beautiful book crafts before, but as a collection, they show the versatility of book crafts and the power of the written word. So let’s get creative!

So what can you make from old books?

I think you can make almost anything your mind can think up. I have classified book crafts into three categories: book page crafts, book cover crafts, and whole book crafts.

These examples are just the starting point, but they showcase different ways to utilize the parts of a book. And if you just can’t make one yourself, you can at least enjoy them for the beautiful creations they are. 🙂

Creative Uses for Old Book Pages

You only need the pages to do the following book crafts. Get out your pens, paint, and origami skills!

The link to this beautiful book page mobile is broken, so I can’t seem to find the original source, but I LOVE it. It’s simple and classic and makes you want to discover what’s inside your most recent book. It also makes me want to play with all the designs and hang it in a reading nook by a window. Heaven.

Book coat rack.  How original is this coat rack–out of books? It’s so much fun! Add it to the book page background and it’s a reader’s heaven. The stacked books give so much texture and color to the rack while the mismatched hooks add character.

Lisa

Thank you! And I’m the same way–i have to write down EVERYTHING.

Amy Wilson

I’m a writer, not a crafter, but I am going to beg, plead, and cry until my sister or my daughter make me that front door wreath. I LOVE it.

I love that mobile, too. Maybe I’ll double my pleas?

Thanks for sharing!

That’s awesome Amy. I’m positive your pleading will result in beautiful book crafts. 🙂

Hi Lisa! Loved these crafts. They’re great! Pinning!

So glad you liked them, Vashti. And thank you so much for pinning!

Meghan

These are all so beautiful but I could just not imagine destroying a book for art.

Hi Meghan, I know it’s a bit hard to do. For other projects I’ve found a book that was already pretty destroyed so I didn’t feel so bad about it. Hope that helps.

The Reading Residence

So now I pretty much want all of the above!

Right? The hardest part is deciding which to start with!

What a fun gathering of book arts creative crafts/artwork! I will try and make time for at least two of your projects (with my own twist, of course!) 🙂 TY!

Thank you Rose!

I love several of the projects but can’t see how I can ever sacrifice a book to do it. It would be like wielding the ax at a beheading. The Library Society here runs a sale every year for the County Library, but the older books just go from the regular library to the Library Guild, run by the Society. We respect our books around here. My mom still has my Dad’s Encyclopedia Brittanica from 1966 with addendum every year until he died. I believe he read every page. I’ve had to promise to keep them as a set on …  Read more »

Book crafts aren’t for everyone. I think every book lover loves the look, but some can’t quite destroy the book and that’s okay. I’ll bet your Dad’s encyclopedias are amazing! 🙂

HOW TO MAKE NEW BOOKS LOOK OLD

book-page-crafts

Use Old Outdated Travel Books

aged-paper-crafts

Make yourself a pot of strong coffee and pour it over the books, as shown. If you have enough to cover them that’s better. Open up the pages and get them soaked really well. This will help the pages absorb the liquid and ruffle up nicely. Leave the books to soak for several hours if possible for more stain… I know that some people use tea for staining but I prefer to use coffee. As a result of using coffee you can achieve a deeper stain.

Wonderful Janet, thanks for the Tutorial. I plan on sorting out my books this weekend for this project. ?

I'm doing this tomorrow! Love this idea.

Thanks for the tutorial. I've been wanting to do this but I was thinking I'd have to scour garage sales, find old books, and with much guilt, rip off the covers. Your method is much better.

Thanks for sharing ! Love the results !!!

Love this tfs♡

Gorgeous…I love this idea, going now to give this a try. TFS, you ROCK!!!

Love your display. What a great idea for a fall display.

OMG I love this idea, they came out so old and pretty! Thanks for linking up to Merry Monday! Sharing on Fb & pinned! Have a great week! Kim

I love project that use stuff I already have. And what a great idea to turn old paperbacks into a cool decor piece. Thanks for the tutorial!

Thanks for posting. Hello from Treasure Box Tuesday.

Thanks for how to on the books. Will be using Pinterest to save so it on the party with my ftench country cottage.

Great idea and so simple! Thank you for sharing with Dream. Create. Inspire. Link! I hope we'll see you again next week!

How exactly do you “ ruffle the pages “?

They should ruffle somewhat naturally if you use this technique. Some of the books pictured are genuine antiques and we are going for the look in this tutorial.

This weekend I am going to try this aging process on some no longer needed books I have. Then I am going to cover the covers with Christmas design paper. Thank you, Janet!

That sounds like so much fun Odessa and will look great for the holiday season!

Will the pages stick together in this process? I am wanting to make a book look vintage, yet still readable without taking it apart and putting it back together.

This would not be a great process if you still want to read the book, as it may indeed cause some stuck pages

So, I have been looking for some way to age only the pages of a new sketch book that I got, and I was curious if you know of any other ways to dry the books faster after staining it? I am just worried that my brand-new book will mold before the sun dries it.

You can try a blow dryer and that should help

Great! Thank you very much!!

Nice post! Will you be able to read them still? I want to do this but I still want to be able to read the book I am doing.

I would not use this particular technique on books that you intend to read Valarie.

From a local “coffee shop” she recorded “everyone is displeased that ‘King Andrew must now have what he pleases’...”. Breathing New Life into Old Books: The Art of Papercraft

paper books old

Why do I take apart old books and sell the parts?

Repurposing old books is a great way to breathe new life into them and allow them to continue their stories.  The pages and illustrations that I sell in my Etsy shop are removed from old books that are worn out or falling apart. They have come to the end of their life as a reading book. and are bound for the dumpster. I am removing the lovely old paper and illustrations so that someone might incorporate them into a new piece of art.

What Can You Do with Pages from Old Books?

These pages can be used to create a visual story, commonly known as a Junk Journal. It allows you to document your life in a unique way—compile a visual record of your travels, create a collection of things you love, paint a picture on a page of words, or even design a memorial or a bucket list.

Making junk journals can be therapeutic. The act of clipping, sorting, pasting, and creating from scrap aids in relaxation and emotional processing. You might discover illustrations and passages meaningful to you within these packets. Interested in seeing what I mean? Check out these Paper Packets on Etsy .

Tell your story.

Creating a junk journal not only helps you tell your story but also contributes to waste reduction, thereby making the world a tad more eco-friendly. It gives new life to objects that might otherwise be discarded, asserting that just because something is old and tattered, it has not outlived its usefulness.

Crafting a New Life for Old Books

Through the art of papercraft, I celebrate the renaissance of vintage book pages. My sources are old books stored in boxes, those gathering dust on thrift shop shelves, or those stacked away in closets, waiting for someone to rediscover their hidden beauty.

The feel of the old paper, the delicate impressions left by letterpress blocks on a page’s reverse side, and the slightly brown-tinted, rich ink can evoke a sense of nostalgia. Whether it’s soft cotton wove paper or textured laid paper, each page carries a unique charm.

While these books have fulfilled their roles as reading material, their paper-based era is sadly falling behind in the wake of digital media. Through papercraft, we pay homage to both the books and the skilled artisan printers, preserving history in a creative and meaningful way.

Selecting The Right Books For Papercraft.

The best place to start? Anything printed before 1900. Within this era, pay attention to the publishers and printers.

Avoid mass-produced books printed on acidic paper that has darkened and turned brittle over time. These papers don’t fold well and may crack, and inks or paints could bleed through or warp them.

Good printing houses use quality materials that withstand the test of time.  Paper from these sources ages gracefully to a warm antique white, remaining flexible and firm. Well-known publishers during the 1920s, such as Scribner, Harcourt Brace, and Houghton Mifflin, are good indicators of quality.

Stains or ‘foxing’—brown, yellow, or red blotchy stains on paper caused by mold or metal contaminants during manufacturing—might be present. Whether you use foxed pages is a personal choice; they are safe to use and don’t affect the paper’s integrity.

Hobbies on a Budget

Paper Hearts out of Old Books

I have a stack of treasured vintage books that I have inherited from my Grandparents and Great Grandparents. Those books have a place of honor on my book shelf. But I also have a box of old, water stained, torn up books in the garage that are not even good enough for a thrift store donation or library. Their pages have just seen too much wear in their lifetime to be good as a book. But that doesn’t mean they’re worthless. The other day I took a few pages and created decorative hearts out of old books.

This post includes affiliate links.

paper hearts out of old books

Materials Needed

  • Old pages from a book (sheet music would work as well)
  • Rafia ribbon or colorful string
  • Measure and cut 8 strips of paper 1 inch wide. (I made my strips about 10 inches long since that was the size of the book. You could make them as long as you wanted your hearts to be.)
  • Divide them into 2 piles of 4 strips each.
  • Trim the ends of 3 of the strips so that each strip is 1 inch shorter than the previous strip.

Paper Hearts out of old books

  • Line up the strips so that one end is even and the other end shows the shorter edges.
  • Staple the end that has the strips lined up.
  • Then pull the strips so that the other end is lined up even and staple the other end. You will see that you have a dimensional shape forming.

Paper hearts out of old book

  • Now it’s time to attach the two halves of the heart. Staple the top two pieces of the heart; then connect the bottom edges and staple. You could even glue a decorative button to cover the staple.

Paper Hearts

  • The Final Step is giving the heart a loop. I used a large needle with a piece of rafia ribbon. There is a natural opening where the staple connects the paper, so I just threaded the needle through that opening and tied a loop.

Paper Heart

Have you ever made paper hearts out of old books? I’d love to hear what you use these for.

What to Do with Old Books – How to Recycle and Dispose of Books

In this digital day and age, the world is still full of physical book lovers. There is nothing quite like physically holding your favorite novel and diving in, folding a corner to hold your place, or using your favorite bookmark. If you are one of these print book lovers, you’ve probably asked yourself the question…what do I do with these old books now?

Selling, donating, or recycling are three great ways of disposing of old print books that you no longer use or can’t store. This also means you’re saving these books from ending up in the trash or landfill.

Where to Sell Old Books

Online marketplaces and bookstores, independent bookstores , garage, and yard sales are all options where you can sell used print books.

According to Statista , today’s reader still prefers print over e-books, with over 40% of the population in countries where e-books are popular (United States, United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, Spain, Germany, and France), having purchased a print book in 2020. In fact, in the first quarter of 2021, print book sales in the US went up by 29% ! This means, plenty of book readers will readily buy your used books. In another Statista Survey , 35% of participants between ages 18 and 29 purchased new and secondhand print books in equal numbers in 2017.

book shelf with used books

These statistics suggest that opting to sell your old books is a great idea; you can even earn a bit of money and help out someone looking to buy a used book or textbook. Let’s discuss your book marketplaces to some length.

Online Marketplaces

You have many options regarding online marketplaces where you can sell books. Starting with Amazon, the largest global marketplace and online book store . Even if you don’t intend to start an Amazon bookstore that sells books online as a business, you can go for the one-time book sale for your books.

Other top 10 online marketplaces where you can sell used books include:

  • Powell’s Books
  • AbeBooks.com
  • Barnes&Noble
  • Textbooks.com
  • BookDeal.com
  • Better World Books

Most online book-buying websites will give you a price quote so you will know exactly how much you will get for your books.

To know where to get the best price for your used book, you can use online stores that compare prices from different online bookstores. Bookscouter is one such tool. It also gives you the option of selling the books from the same site.

Other online bookstores like Better World Books don’t only sell used books, but they also donate them and fund literacy initiatives worldwide. Find more information about the donation process on their website donation page .

If you intend to sell books in bulk, the Facebook marketplace, ThriftBooks.com, Alibaba.com, eBay, Craiglist.org, and BooksbyKilo are good options.

Local Independent Bookshops and Indie Bookstores

If you want to support your local community and economy, your local indie bookstore is the first place to start selling books. This option is also the most eco-friendly choice for what to do with old books.

Indie bookstore

Targeting a local bookstore reduces the carbon footprint because less material is used for packaging, and little transportation is done. You’ll first need to contact the bookstore to find out what type of books they accept. Most secondhand bookstores and chain bookshops like Half Price Books will only accept ‘As New’ or gently used books, and not a Reader’s copy or a Binding Copy.

Find out about their compensation protocol for your books beforehand. Do not expect to earn much from your used books. Think of it as money for nothing, since normally you’d be tossing them out anyway. Bookstore owners have to find willing customers who can beat your selling price, and also have overhead costs to consider. Some secondhand bookstores may compensate you with store credit, which is a great option for book lovers. Others may offer a premium rate if you accept a store credit instead of cash!

Yard and Garage Sales

If your community organizes a yard or garage sale, you can take advantage to earn a few bucks from your unused books. Consider selling them in bulk or in bundles, and pricing each book in the bulk for a dollar or less.

people browsing for used books at a yardsale

Sometimes third-party online booksellers will frequent these community book sales to find a large stock for the least amount possible. Therefore, you can’t expect them to buy from you at higher prices than they could sell them.

Where to Donate Books

You can donate books to libraries, local and international literacy programs, prisons, women’s shelters, foster homes, and army camps among others. These and other options discussed below are great options for your free books if you are not after making money from your books.

Local Library

University, local, and state libraries are common places you can donate books. Some libraries will even have a drop box where you can leave your unused books.

Library book drop

But, whether the university accepts or rejects your book donation will depend on the library’s book donation guidelines and storage space.

The American Library Association explains that many libraries in the US will accept donated books on the condition that the library is free to decide if to keep the books in their collection, put them on sale, or discard them. In addition, you should not expect money in exchange for donated library books. However, some public libraries may give a receipt that can be presented for a tax-deductible value. The appraisal estimate of the donation has to be done by you.

Book donations to your local library can be rejected if they are in poor condition or have too much damage including:

  • Wet or damaged by water
  • Have missing pages or covers
  • Have damaged pages, spine, or binding
  • Present too much writing, markings, or highlighting

damaged old book

Before presenting your books and magazines to a local library, call to find out the conditions for donating or search the library website for guidelines. Libraries often limit book donations to organized seasonal or annual book drives.

Local Literacy Programs

Many local communities have local literacy programs that could make good use of your unwanted books. A quick search online will usually pop up more than one local organization accepting book donations for children , foster youth , and others in need. You can also keep an eye out for a local book drive. Many city libraries also run used bookstores which use the money earned for early literacy programs, so check with your local library also.

Fund Literacy Initiatives Worldwide

International charities can also make your donated book reach and benefit someone far away in a country where there’s book famine. For example, international charities like World Literacy Foundation, Books for Africa, and Book Aid International are among those you can entrust your used books with so they reach someone who needs it.

Donate Books to a Local Prison

People who are serving time can spend their free time reading some of the used books you no longer need.

prisoner reading book

To know if your book can be donated to a local prison, call the prison management to ask or work with a non-profit charity such as the Prison Book Program . Apart from sending your donated books to prisoners, this grassroots organization also lists other ‘Books to Prisoners Programs’ that you can contact to donate books. Visit their website for new posts and further information.

Salvation Army and other Local Charities

Local charities accept donations and distribute books, magazines, and other items to people who need them. Some of these reputable not-for-profit organizations include Habitat for Humanity Restores, St. Vincent de Paul, and the Salvation Army . The Salvation Army is a convenient and quick option for book disposal while also making a helpful donation.

For example, as one of the international social aid providers, they use some of its proceeds to fund literacy initiatives worldwide. It also accepts used hardcover and paperback books and other donated items for their homeless shelters.

Other Places You Can Donate Your Paperback Books

Other places you can donate your unwanted books include local theaters and museums (for props and display), retirement homes, local schools, and soldier camps.

Your old magazines and books can likewise be left at a drop-off location or donated at a Little Free Library . Little free libraries are isolated community book boxes where you can donate and exchange books to keep reading in a fun way.

You can use the Little Free Library Map and Search Tool on the organization’s website to find a Little Free Library near you. This is a great activity to involve your kids in as well.

Little Free Library

More Ways To Reuse

Even after the several options above, there are even still some more ideas listed below.

  • Trade your old textbooks at a community center, organize a book swap meet at a coffee table in a coffee shop, or create online book swap groups.
  • Especially if you are a college student, exchange unused books for those you need through international online book exchange communities such as BookMooch and pay only the shipping cost.
  • Create a ‘Free Books’ box at waiting points in hospitals, offices, or bus and train stations. Check first with the management or municipal council if it is ok to do so.
  • Ask your family and friends if they are interested in reading or keeping books you may not need anymore.
  • Borrow books or rent them as a proactive way of avoiding buying books that end up in a landfill.

How to Recycle Books

What to do with books you can’t donate?

However hard we try to save books from ending up in the landfill, some books and other reading materials will still be too worn out or obsolete to be saved. In this case, recycling books for other paper products is the best option.

paper books old

So, where and how do you recycle books? Here are some great ideas on ways to recycle your books and some fun ideas on how to repurpose unused books.

Can Books Be Recycled Curbside?

Yes, you can recycle your unwanted books in your curbside recycling bin. Most waste management programs accept magazines, newspapers, and paperback books in curbside pickup. Check your city or county trash service website regarding their rules for hardcovers. Some exclude hardcover books because of the binding. You may be able to remove the bindings and include the rest in your recycling bin, but be sure to check locally.

Submit Books to a Recycle Program

Your textbooks, magazines, hardcover, and paperback books that cannot be resold or donated can be delivered to a local recycling center, left in a book recycling bin near you, or delivered to a book-recycling company.

3 book-recycling companies you can consider include:

  • Books4Paper – turns unusable books back to paper.
  • Discoverbooks.com – makes paper products from recycled books.
  • United States Recycling, Inc. – handles a wide variety of paper including books, magazines, and mixed paper.

5 Ways to Recycle Books and Magazines by Crafting Them into New Creations

Turning books into creative art or sellable creations are green ways to recycle your books. You can:

  • Craft a table lamp with mixed papers. See the example on thriftyfun.com .
  • Make unique card and gift envelopes from books and magazines. See some great ideas from creativegreenliving.com .
  • Make sellable paper beads and jewelry from fiction books, colored phone books, and magazines. See an example in this video .
  • Make book page holders for pencils and other writing material. See an example in the 3 R’s Blog .
  • Use old printed pages as gift wrap or to wrap up fragile items you need to store like ornaments.

Should i throw away old books.

You should not throw away old books unless they are moldy, wet, or burnt. Try first to resell, donate, recycle, or use them for decoration. If you can go for one of these options, do not throw away old books.

How Do I Dispose of Old Hardcover Books?

Hardcover books can be disposed of by selling or gifting them to local libraries, thrift shops, local bookstores, or online bookstores. Besides, you can use them to decorate, and if worn out, you can remove the hardcover and leave the paper pages at a local recycling center.

Can Hardcover Books be Recycled?

Yes. Hardcover books can be recycled. But, for most cities, you’ll be directed to remove the hardcover before placing them in the recycle bin. Most hardcovers are made from leather, cloth, or plastic and cannot be recycled as mixed paper.

What Can You Do With Old Books?

There are six things you can do with old books; sell, donate, trade, recycle, decorate, and upcycle . You can resell them online or at a local bookstore, donate them to soldiers, prisoners, local literacy programs, and local or international charities. You can also use your old books to decorate or deliver them to a center for recycling books.

Gorgeous Ways To Use Old Books Pages in DIY Projects And Crafts

Simona Ganea on Homedit

A lot of DIY projects and crafts don’t require big budgets, special knowledge or experience or even any special supplies. There are lots of cool and interesting things that you can make from items that you already own or from things that can be repurposed. For example, you can make lots of interesting decorations out of pages from an old book. These are actually some of our all-time favorite projects and we can’t wait to share these ideas with you today.

DIY Paper Rose Ball Made from Old Book Pages

A nice and simple project to get you started is a big paper flower. There are many different techniques that you can use and the one shown on diyncrafts makes use of a styrofoam wreath form. In addition to this form, you’re also going to need some rope, a picture frame, push pins, a hot glue gun and a few book pages if you want to craft something similar. Of course, the picture frame is optional and not necessarily needed, as you can choose to simply attach the flower directly to the wall or to another surface.

DIY Paper Rose Ball Made from Old Book Pages

On a similar note, isn’t this paper wreath adorable? It’s made from old book pages like all the other things on this list and it’s tiny and cute, a perfect decoration for your kitchen cabinets, walls and any other surface that could use some sprucing up. To make these adorable paper wreaths you’re going to need an old book, mason jar lids (one for each mini wreath), a hot glue gun and some twine. All the details and instructions can be found on thehoneycombhome .

DIY Paper Rose Ball Made from Old Book Pages

Using old book pages you can also potentially make a more modern-looking wreath, one with a bit of boho charm, like the one featured on apieceofrainbow . The supplies needed for this particular project are not many: some glue, twine, book pages and some sort of decorations that you can add to make the paper flowers look nice and pretty. In this case some faucet handles were used. If you like the look, a trip to the local hardware store is in order.

DIY Paper Rose Ball Made from Old Book Pages

To get your book pages to have that old, yellow hue you can use some tea of coffee. It’s a very simple trick and all you need to do is soak the pages in the colored liquid and then let them dry. You can then use them in your project which in this particular case is a garland. As you can see here, you can use a sharpie to decorate your garland and draw or write various different things on the paper pieces. More details about this project can be found on paperandfox in case you’re interested.

DIY Paper Rose Ball Made from Old Book Pages

Another thing that you can use old book pages for is to make cute little gift bags. This is a nice idea to apply when you’re making party favors or if you’re planning a bohemian wedding or some other special event. You could use pages from one of your favorite books to make it even more special. You can add all sorts of details such as lace or ribbon to customize the design. Check out craftandcreativity for more details and ideas.

DIY Paper Rose Ball Made from Old Book Pages

Using old book pages as decorations can be as simple as just cutting them into pieces and sticking them to a wall. There are plenty of ways to make this look special. For example, you could make a sort of display area with pieces of paper resembling speech bubbles. You can actually cut out sections from your favorite books so you can have something interesting and special to read if you ever want to or to create a sort of inspirational board. Either way, be sure to check out cleverlyinspired for the details.

DIY Paper Rose Ball Made from Old Book Pages

Some heavy-duty floral wire and a few pages from an old book are enough for you to make a lovely flower wreath that you can display on your front door or on a wall as a way to add some character to our home. You can add a few extra little bits and decorations to make the design special. For example, this wreath featured on diyncrafts has tiny little sunflowers and they look adorable plus they also add a bit of color to the design.

DIY Paper Rose Ball Made from Old Book Pages

Another lovely idea is to use buttons for the centers of the paper flowers. You can make a bunch of small paper flowers and then combine them all to make a wreath. For the actual wreath form you can simply cut out a circle from a piece of cardboard and have the flowers glued onto this surface in any pattern you like. We really enjoy the simple design featured on diyncrafts . It’s something that anyone can pull off and the project can be done with items that you probably already have in the house which is amazing.

DIY Paper Rose Ball Made from Old Book Pages

In case you didn’t notice it already, the beautiful star-shaped frame of this gorgeous wall decoration is made out of old book pages which were rolled tightly and then glued together. It’s such a creative and original idea and a really cool way of making custom frames for your decorations and projects. You can fill this lovely star with greenery and flowers to create a seasonal display but you can also use other supplies based on your own ideas. Check out the full tutorial on diyncrafts if you want to find out more details about this project.

Here’s an idea that you might want to save for Easter. These are Easter eggs decorated using old book pages. Yes, it’s a fairly tedious process but we think it’s well worth it. The idea is to cut out a bunch of strips of paper and to then glue them onto plastic eggs until the whole surface is covered up and becomes nice and smooth. You can then put the eggs in a cute basket and add a few additional details and decorations to make everything look extra pretty. The idea comes from roseclearfield .

Another cool project idea comes from muslinandmerlot . This tutorial explains how you can use old book pages to make beautiful ball-shaped flowers which you can use as decorations around the house. It’s not nearly as complicated as you may think. You can either use ping-pong balls or styrofoam balls for this project and you’ll also need a scalloped circle paper punch, a glue gun and a bunch of book pages plus an unsharpened pencil or something similar that you can use to push the paper bits into the balls and give them petal-like shapes.

Of course, book pages can also be sued for something other than flowers and wreaths. A really interesting and inspiring idea in this sense is offered on lizmarieblog where you can find a tutorial for a handmade bowl made of paper and rope. You’ll also need mod podge for this project as well as a hot glue gun so make sure you have all the supplies ready before you get started. This lovely bowl can become a nice accent piece or a decoration for the console table in the entryway or for the living room or dining area.

Paper roses are really cute and beautiful on their own and especially when you mix a bunch of them and make a paper rose ball. We’re talking about this gorgeous decoration which you can make for yourself or as a gift for someone you care about. You can use different types of paper for the roses to get different colors and you can also add a few extra little details such as beads. There’s also the option to sprinkle glitter onto the roses for a bit of sparkle or to spray paint the paper before you turn it into flowers. All the details and instructions can be found on diyncrafts .

If you’re looking for ideas on how to upcycle old books, then I have 21 genius ideas for you. And most of them are easier than you might think!

From upcycling the entire book to repurposing the book cover and using up the book pages inside, there are lots of ideas below to suit all levels and styles.

I hope you see something today that inspires you. Happy reading and upcycling!

1. Book Spine Bookmarks

Book spine bookmarks - easy how to

Up first on this list of genius ways to upcycle old books is to make DIY book spine bookmarks .

Not only are most book spines the perfect size to use as bookmarks, but it’s also so easy to repurpose them in this way!

All you need to do is remove the book spine from the cover, reinforce it and protect it with some kind of sealer. And hey presto – you have a unique bookmark!

Take a look at our bookmark tutorial now >>

2. Book Rolodex

A book Rolodex is one of my favourite ways to repurpose old books. For this project, you’ll use the entire book.

By folding the pages in a certain way and anchoring the two sides of the book cover together using chipboard or strong cardstock, you’ll be able to make a beautiful and practical desk accessory.

Here’s a helpful tutorial to show you how it’s done >>

3. Home Decor / Art Piece

If you’re looking for ideas on how to use up old book pages, then you might enjoy making some DIY home decor or an art piece.

There are lots of ways you can do this.

One idea is to make a simple heart art picture just like we did with old maps .

Or maybe you could use book pages as the background for a stunning piece of collage artwork?

Or how about printing a pretty image onto a book page – like in this example – and framing that instead?

Check out this tutorial to learn how to make the heart art picture mentioned above >>

4. Junk Journals

Mini Lace Junk Journals Flip Through

Time for the bread and butter of everything I do here at House of Mahalo: junk journals . These are perfect projects for upcycling old books.

And there are lots of ways you can make them!

You might want to use two book boards and make a ring-bound journal like I did with my Tim Holtz ring-bound junk journal .

Tim Holtz ringbound junk journal

Alternatively, you could create a new spine from thick cardstock to replace the book’s existing spine and make a journal that way.

That’s what I did for my Little Golden Book journals and my “Enchanted Woodland” fairy junk journal .

Or maybe you want to use up some papers and fabric scraps to make mini journals out of pocket dictionaries. Here are some I made for my first junk journal project.

Take a look at my junk journal blogs to find out more >>

Or maybe you want to see how I make my junk journals via my YouTube channel? >>

5. Altered Book Journals

Altered book pages using LianaScrap Autumn Essentials Kit

Alternatively, one of the simplest ways to make a journal from an old book is to make an altered book journal .

This is where you’ll remove some pages from the book and then decorate the remaining pages or make pockets from them by folding them in different ways.

Altered book journals are a lot of fun to make!

6. Writing Boards

Speaking of journals, you might want to make a coordinating writing board to live inside your journal.

By using book boards, you’ll have a flat, hard surface to tuck underneath your page to make it easier to write on.

All you need to do is decorate your book board and seal it with matte medium glue and you have a quick and easy writing board ready to go!

7. Book Folding Art

Here’s another upcycling idea when you want to use the entire book: book folding art.

By folding the book’s pages in a certain way, you can make fun images and words and create an amazing and unique home decor piece.

If you’re not sure where to start, you can buy book folding patterns from sites like Etsy and simply follow their template and instructions.

Find your perfect pattern now >>

8. Book Clutch Bag

Book clutch bag

If you have a book cover that you love, why not turn it into your new lust-have accessory?

You can make your very own book clutch bag by replacing the innards of a book with a gusseted fabric pouch instead of its original book pages.

Here’s a tutorial to show you how it’s done >>

9. Book Page Confetti

Book page confetti

Here’s another simple idea for repurposing unloved books: make confetti with the book pages.

Simply buy yourself a shaped punch from any good craft store and just start punching!

Please note that this won’t be biodegradable confetti, so you probably won’t want to use it outside. But it works well for decorating table tops.

10. Book Page Packaging

If you sell products , why not swap conventional packaging for book page packaging?

There are lots of ways you can do this. You could make envelopes from book pages, as well as pouches, baggies, wrapping paper, you name it.

That’s certainly one way to stand out from the competition!

Note: You might want to avoid this idea if the book pages affect the health and safety of your product, such as in the case of food.

11. Secret Storage Book Box

Finished DIY secret storage book box photo

Who doesn’t find a “catch-all” box helpful when it comes to hiding clutter?

But what if I told you that you could make yours look decorative, beautiful and unique while saving unloved books from going to landfill or incineration?

In this project, you’ll use book covers and book spines to “hide” a box, which you can then fancy up with lace and extra embellishments like I did.

And the best bit? It’s an easy project, which you’ll probably be able to finish in just one weekend!

Here’s how to make it >>

12. Book Safe

Speaking of secret storage, a book safe is another way to make this kind of project. But this time, you’ll upcycle almost the entire book.

You can make one of your own by cutting out a rectangle through all of the pages inside your book. This is where you can keep small valuables.

Pop the book on your bookshelf and no one would ever know (at a glance) that it’s not a real book anymore.

Check out this tutorial for the full instructions >>

13. Book Page Roses

DIY Swirl Paper Roses

If there’s a special occasion coming up such as a birthday or Valentine’s Day, why not make someone a cute rose (or bouquet of them) using book pages?

Check out my tutorial to see how it’s done >>

14. Vintage Writing Folio

Ruby Red Writing Folio

Okay, so this one is kind of like the junk journals and altered book journals I mentioned earlier.

This time, you can turn a gorgeous book cover into a writing folio where you can keep writing paper, envelopes and postage stamps. Perfect for the vintage lovers among you!

To see exactly how I made mine (and how easy it is!), take a look at my blog post and video >>

15. Book Clock

This one is similar to the book safe already mentioned.

This time, instead of hiding valuables inside your book, you can hide a clock mechanism inside it and attach clock hands to the outside of the book.

And voila! You have an instant clock that will look very cool in your home.

Here’s a fab tutorial to show you how to do it >>

16. DIY Book Page Envelopes

If you’d like to send a handmade card to someone you love, then why not add a special handmade touch to the envelope as well?

Book page envelopes are easy enough to make – here’s a tutorial to show you how .

17. Book Page Coasters

Easy DIY Map Coasters

Who doesn’t love the old-school charm that book pages bring to a project? So why not upcycle your old book pages into super cool coasters ?

You can do this by covering plain coasters with book pages and then sealing them with ModPodge or something similar.

Take a look at this tutorial to see exactly how it’s done >>

18. Decoupage Furniture With Book Pages

Here’s another way to celebrate the old-school charm of book pages: decoupage furniture with them!

You’ll need to use a sealer glue such as ModPodge for this one and you’ll likely want to use white book pages rather than yellowed/aged ones.

This would work well for most pieces of furniture. Why not start with something easy, which has straight edges and simple lines, such as a shelf, tabletop or bookcase?

The book pages will give your office or living room such a cool and unique look!

Check out this tutorial for more info >>

19. Book Page Mirror

Okay, so there are lots of home decor ideas in this blog post, but that’s because book pages give such a cool and unique look to the home.

This time, you can use discarded book pages to decorate the edges of a mirror.

I love how this one by The Shabby Creek Cottage looks!

20. DIY Wrapping Paper

DIY Wrapping Paper Using Book Pages

For another quick and easy upcycling old books idea, you can glue book pages together and make almost-instant wrapping paper .

I made mine using an old Pink Panther annual, which was a lot of fun!

Take a look at my tutorial now >>

21. Clipboard Gift Set

Clipboard Gift Set

And finally, here’s another way to upcycle book boards that have come away from their spine: turn them into clipboards.

You can do this quickly and easily by decorating the book boards, sealing them with matte medium glue and adding a clip to the top.

Why not take this idea even further and create a fun clipboard gift set to send to someone?

I packaged up some unwanted Christmas papercraft supplies to sell in my Etsy shop and the whole package looked just perfect for journal lovers and crafters.

Here’s my video to show you how I made mine >>

Rustic Paper Vase Decor from Old Book Pages

Modified: Mar 31, 2022 by Katie Hale · This post may contain affiliate links · Leave a Comment

Paper vase collage

I am absolutely in love with the simplicity of this paper vase decor made from old book pages. Who knew you could turn an old torn apart book into such a stunning centerpiece or addition to your home decor? I am shocked that this simple project turned out so stunning. All you need is a sharp craft knife, some glue, and suddenly you have a gorgeous addition to your home.

Paper Vase Decor from Old Books

In my quest to make as many things as possible from old books, this is my recent project. There is just something that makes my heart happy about turning a beautiful book that would have been thrown away into an even more beautiful piece of decor. The smell of the paper, and the beautiful print on the pages just turn this rustic and make it simply beautiful all by itself.

This is a great little project that doesn't take very long but it looks like it took hours to create. Of course, that makes me happy. I love adding things to my home that look expensive and difficult to make, but are super easy and even frugal!

Can This be Used for Real Flowers?

If you are only using for a short period of time and don't plan to add water to them, it can work for holding a few stems. Otherwise, this is not a vase you add water to and store flowers for long periods of time.

I can see using it for artificial flowers like I show, or a few long stem roses just for a short time on the dinner table. Under no circumstances should you add water to this vase. Obviously, being made from paper, it is not suitable for liquids.

How Can I Decorate My Vase?

I used a simple gold ribbon around the neck of the vase. The simplicity of this look works great for me and my home, but you can easily add your own style. There are tons of great ways to really revamp this into a unique new look.

  • Add a bow with the ribbon around the neck of the vase.
  • Coat the edges of the paper with glue and sprinkle on a bit of glitter.
  • Spray with a light coat of paint in colors that match your decor.
  • Add holiday colors of ribbon at the change of seasons and holidays.
  • Use a string of beads instead of ribbon around the neck of the vase.
  • Tie a bow using burlap or denim around the vase to add a country chic look to the project.
  • Make them in different sizes using different types of books to display on your mantle.

Can This be Made With Regular Craft Paper?

To make this using regular craft paper, you would need to add a bit of glue along the edges to hold them together. I recommend stacking your choice of papers together evenly, then spreading a generous coating of hot glue along one side. Let the glue dry, then once you cut the vase shape out, you can follow the directions to connect into the shape.

How to Make a Paper Vase out of Old Book Pages

Using a small piece of cardboard the same size as the book you are using, trace out a vase shape. You want this to be just the outline of one side of the vase.

Drawing a vase shape onto cardboard

Cut the shape out of the cardboard with a craft knife or scissors.

Place the cardboard template onto your book, putting it up against the edge of the book binding and trace the shape on to the top page of the paper.

Craft knife cutting through book pages

Using your craft knife, cut out off the excess outer paper.

drawing vase shape onto book page

Continue this process until you are down to just the last few pages of the paper vase. At this point, you can use scissors to trim off the final few pages.

Using scissors to cut out book page

Once the entire book has been cut out, you'll have a stack of pages connected on the flat side by book binding glue.

Book pages cut in stack

Now, stand up the stack, and start pulling the two sides together to connect and form a circle.

Use hot-glue to seal the two sides together and hold the vase shape in place.

Now, add a strip of ribbon around the neck of the vase.

Add any additional embellishments or bows and display as desired.

Additionally chose one of my diy flower projects here to add to your lovely vase:

If you have leftover books, you may want to make different crafts. I love using old books and have tons of ideas! This burlap book page rose wreath is a new favorite combination of two rustic items. You might also want to hang this old book page star wall art decoration on your bedroom wall.

Make this upcycled book page scroll wreath for your favorite recent graduate or this old book page origami wreath for your front door. You might prefer this fun and unique hanging paper fern from an old book to hang above your table. Of course, you can always just have fun making old book page roses using one or more of my many tutorials.

Crafter's Tip If you really want to use this style for real flowers, you can find paper vases that hold water on Etsy . These are made just to use as a typical vase.

How To Age Paper To Make Old Book Pages

By now, you have probably seen several rustic craft projects that use old book pages. This is great if you have a lot of old books that you want to dispose of. However, it’s not so great if you don’t have the books or don’t want to destroy the ones you have. Luckily, book page crafts don’t always require an actual book page. There is a way to make your own book pages. In fact, this might be a game changer for you. I’ll show you how to age paper and create realistic old book pages. Besides for book pages, these aged papers can be used for other paper crafts such as scrapbooking or gift cards.

how to age paper

How To Make Your Own Old Book Pages

Photocopy a vintage book page.

I particularly like the look of aged book pages versus brand spanking new. Unless I have a vintage book that is half way destroyed anyway, I will not want to tear any of the pages out. However, I still want to use old book pages in some of my craft projects.  Luckily, I have found a way to get past this little problem and it is really very simple.

The first technique is barely a technique and definitely the most simple. The only requirements are that you already own a book with yellowed pages and you also have a copier that you can make colored copies on. Just make sure to have the printer settings on color before you make your copy.

Here is an example of a copy that I took from a yellowed page of an old book.

photocopied vintage book page

The copy is just a little bit lighter but it definitely has the aged look to it.  You can’t get any easier than that.  However, if you don’t have any old books or any books at all, you can still get some book pages and age them yourself. And, if you just want to age paper without it being a book page, you can do so easily with the next technique.

How To Age Paper With Tea Bags

What you’ll need.

  • white paper

Aging your own paper is a simple technique that you can apply to a basic sheet of white paper. To make white paper look old, you have to get the color to be somewhat yellowed or brown. You can then go further by adding ripped edges or a little crinkling to the paper. Since I wanted to create my own aged book page, I started by printing off a book page copy that I found online. If you are wanting a specific book page for your craft project, this is a convenient way to get just what you want without the actual book.

I googled book page and then clicked on images and came up with several images of different book pages.  I printed off this one.

printed book page

My copy printed off with a line running down the edge. This is not a problem since I will be ripping the edges later. The copy is actually already a little bit aged but I am going to show you how to age it some more.  Start by making yourself a hot cup of tea with a tea bag.

Put your paper into a rectangular shaped plastic container.  Once the tea is steeped, take out the tea bag and rub it all over the paper. If you don’t have a tea bag, just use a little of your leftover morning coffee. You can apply the coffee with a cotton ball or pad in a similar way to the tea bag. The coffee may give a slightly darker stain.

how to age paper with a tea bag

Once you cover the entire paper, take it out of the plastic container and lay it out flat to dry.

tea stained paper

You can use a blow dryer to speed up the drying process but it will end up with a more crinkled texture.  I did it this way for this demonstration but normally like to dry it flat and wait patiently.  When it is dry it will have a nice yellowed and aged look.

At this point, you can tear the edges or add some crinkling if you want. I ripped the edges for my project.

aged paper

It’s now ready to use in your book page crafts or any paper craft that you want the look of aged paper. Doesn’t it look like a vintage book page? A plain aged paper would be an option that is fantastic for doing some hand lettering on.

Here is an example of a page that I used in a project after the paper dried flat. Since this was for a Halloween craft, I found a page to print of The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe. That’s what’s so great about printing off your own book page copies to age. You can make your projects super customized.

Don’t you love a simple technique that you can use for so many different projects?

I tried doing this with watercolor instead of tea, and the ink was running from the water. It looked really cheap so I decided to pre-paint the paper, then flatten it under heavy weights and let dry, then I used that in my printer. After I cut it to size I then added some more watercolor around the edges but was careful not to touch the ink.

I love the idea you gave, because I love books and I don’t want to destroy them for projects. Thank you so much.

You’re welcome Diane! It is a good alternative to actual book pages!

' src=

Great idea to save books for book crafting! Just a thought tea and coffee have acid so maybe not a good idea for aging pages. Perhaps using Distressed ink pads to color may work and are acid free.

' src=

I love it.! I too cannot bring myself to destroy ANY OF MY BOOKS! BUT I love crafting too. I have used the tea aging and it works great. So happy to hear their is another artist who does not like to destroy their books. I often wonder what will happen to my books when I am gone.i know my children do not have the same sense as I towards my books! Kudos for preserving!

Thanks Loretta! It’s definitely great to have other options!

' src=

I was at a thrift store today and bought a trashy romance novel for .25 just so I could try something like this. The pages have a lovely edge to them.

' src=

how would you prevent the pages from warping?

' src=

😂😂😂I feel ur pain

' src=

Love this. Had an old Poe book that was water damaged, but this is an excellent idea to recycle the pages.

The Great Debate: Are Paper Books Superior to E-Books?

Posted: August 6, 2023 | Last updated: November 3, 2023

The rise of e-books has sparked a great debate among book lovers: Are paper books superior to their digital counterparts? Let’s delve into the pros and cons of each to find out.

<p>There’s something about the feel of a physical book in your hands – the weight, the texture of the pages, the smell of the paper and ink. This tactile experience is something that e-books simply can’t replicate.</p>

Tactile Experience

There’s something about the feel of a physical book in your hands – the weight, the texture of the pages, the smell of the paper and ink. This tactile experience is something that e-books simply can’t replicate.

<p>Reading on a screen for extended periods can strain your eyes. Paper books, on the other hand, are easier on the eyes and don’t cause screen fatigue.</p>

Ease on the Eyes

Reading on a screen for extended periods can strain your eyes. Paper books, on the other hand, are easier on the eyes and don’t cause screen fatigue.

<p>Here’s a curious tip from Reddit: “Dead batteries bounce when dropped on a hard surface. Good batteries don’t.” This unconventional method has gained attention online as a simple way to determine the status of a battery. According to anecdotal reports, if you drop a battery on a hard surface and it bounces, it’s likely dead. On the other hand, if the battery remains stationary or only produces a minimal bounce, it indicates that the battery is still functional. While this technique may not be scientifically proven, it can be a handy trick to quickly assess the condition of a battery when you’re in a pinch.</p>

No Battery Life

A paper book never runs out of battery life. You can take it anywhere and read for as long as you want without worrying about finding a power source.

<p>Dive into a world of free entertainment and endless knowledge by utilizing the vast resources available at your local library, as suggested by a Reddit user who shared, “Use the library for books, CDs, DVDs, and now audio books.” Discover a treasure trove of literature, music, movies, and even audiobooks, all conveniently accessible at no cost.</p>

Bookshelves

A well-stocked bookshelf is not just a source of knowledge and entertainment, but also a piece of home decor that showcases your personality. E-books can’t compete with the aesthetic appeal of bookshelves.

<p>The market for used books allows you to buy books at a fraction of the cost, something that’s not possible with e-books. Plus, there’s a certain charm in owning a book that’s been read and loved by others.</p>

The market for used books allows you to buy books at a fraction of the cost, something that’s not possible with e-books. Plus, there’s a certain charm in owning a book that’s been read and loved by others.

<p>Many older individuals have a habit of maintaining handwritten journals or diaries as a way to document their thoughts, experiences, and emotions. These personal writings serve as a means of self-reflection and self-expression. Older people often appreciate the tangible aspect of writing on paper, capturing their memories and preserving a personal record of their lives. The act of writing in a journal allows for introspection, emotional release, and the opportunity to revisit past reflections in the future. These journals become cherished keepsakes and a window into the inner world of the writer, offering insights and reflections that can transcend time.</p>

Note-Taking

While e-books allow for digital note-taking, many readers prefer the act of writing notes in the margins, underlining important passages, and physically interacting with the text in a paper book.

<p>A paper book makes for a more personal gift than an e-book. Plus, you can easily lend and share paper books with friends and family.</p>

Gifting and Sharing

A paper book makes for a more personal gift than an e-book. Plus, you can easily lend and share paper books with friends and family.

<p>Boomers, having lived through various economic cycles, understand the importance of financial prudence. This is a trait that many Millennials, who came of age during the Great Recession, can agree with.</p>

Resale Value

Unlike e-books, paper books can be resold or donated when you’re done reading them, giving them a second life.

<p>While anyone can make a typo, an email from a legitimate company will rarely have major spelling or grammar mistakes. If an email is riddled with errors, it’s a red flag that it might be a phishing scam.</p>

No Tech Issues

Paper books are immune to technical issues. They can’t crash, freeze, or become incompatible with your book reader.

<p>Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) provides a simple and accessible platform for aspiring authors to self-publish their books and reach a wide audience. By writing a book and utilizing KDP, you can bypass traditional publishing routes and take control of the entire publishing process. With KDP, you can easily format your manuscript, design a cover, set pricing, and publish your book in digital format on Amazon’s Kindle store. This platform allows you to retain ownership of your work and earn royalties from every sale. Whether you’re a seasoned writer or a first-time author, self-publishing on KDP offers an opportunity to share your stories and ideas with readers worldwide while potentially generating income from your literary creations.</p>

What Do You Think?

While e-books have their own set of advantages, it’s clear that paper books offer a unique experience that digital versions can’t match. From the tactile pleasure of turning pages to the joy of displaying books on a shelf, paper books have a charm that’s hard to resist. Whether you prefer paper or digital, the most important thing is the joy of reading.

130-Year-Old California Bookstore Seeks Buyer

Vroman’s is a community landmark in Pasadena, Calif. Now, its longtime owner says he’s ready to turn over the reins.

  • Share full article

Joel Sheldon poses on a staircase in the middle of a bookstore. Behind him are shelves with books. The carpeting he is walking on is green and he’s wearing a dark sweater.

By Robin Pogrebin

Reporting from Pasadena, Calif.

Dawn Levesque, 77, goes to learn about World War II. Heidi Barnett, 43, a mother of two, comes to buy presents for her children. Justin Beblawi, 25, has visited since he was a kid and now goes to work there as a clerk.

For people of all ages in Pasadena, Calif., Vroman’s Bookstore, founded in 1894, has been a mainstay, a meeting place, a reliable sanctuary in a world of rapid change. When its founder, Adam Clark Vroman, died in 1916, he left the bookstore to his godson, Alan Sheldon, a Vroman’s employee.

The current chairman and majority shareholder, Joel Sheldon III, 79, is the third generation of his family to guide the company and has been at the helm for more than 45 years.

Now, as Vroman’s prepares to celebrate its 130th anniversary, Sheldon has decided it’s time to hand over the reins.

He doesn’t just want to sell to the highest bidder, however. Sheldon wants to leave the bookstore in good hands.

“Vroman’s deserves new ownership with the vision, energy, and commitment necessary to take it successfully into the future,” Sheldon said in an Instagram post announcing his decision last month.

He continued: “We will take the time needed to find the right new ownership — someone who shares our core values and who is committed to preserving Vroman’s as a community treasure.”

Over the years the bookstore has hosted authors including Upton Sinclair, Ray Bradbury, Ginger Rogers, Joan Didion, Hillary Clinton and Justice Sonia Sotomayor. In 2008, it was named Bookseller of the Year by Publishers Weekly.

“We have generations of customers,” said Sherri Gallentine, who started working as a clerk at Vroman’s in 1992 and became head book buyer in 2010. “We have people who come in and say, ‘I came here when I was a kid with my grandparents, and now I’m bringing my kids here.’ ”

The store is a place of pride for people in Pasadena, said Philip Hawkey, a former city manager. “Vroman’s reflects much of the Pasadena civic identity,” he said.

Reputedly the largest independent bookstore in Southern California, the store has two locations in Pasadena, two boutiques at LAX airport, and an e-commerce site. Its main Pasadena location, on Colorado Boulevard, also has a coffee shop, wine bar and large space for book readings. In 2009, Vroman’s bought the independent bookstore Book Soup in West Hollywood, after its owner died and the store was in danger of closing.

The shops make an effort to curate their selection, with sections like “California and the West” and “Black Lives,” and to prioritize customer service. Often, one of its 150 employees will walk patrons over to shelves to help them find the books they’re seeking.

That personal touch helped Vroman’s to survive competition from the big box stores and online retailers.

“We have people to help you pick out gifts for family or just something nice for yourself,” Gallentine said. “We try to connect with our customers.”

In an interview, Sheldon said he has faith that the right steward for Vroman’s is out there, somewhere: “We’re very confident we can find someone.”

Loyal Vroman’s customers are nevertheless concerned that the bookstore will change — or worse, fail to find a buyer and have to close. “Everybody’s talking about it,” Barnett said.

On a recent weekday morning, Barnett was browsing upstairs in the children’s section with her daughter Liza, who had just turned 8 and was intent on spending her birthday money (her mother was trying to steer her toward the books and away from a stuffed bunny).

“Reading is so important to our family,” Barnett said, and “just bringing them here, I’m instilling that love of books.”

Nearly 40 percent of Vroman’s business comes from merchandise other than books, including gifts, kitchenware, greeting cards and stationery. It would be fine if a new owner chooses to lean more in that direction, Sheldon said: “Adaptability and resilience has allowed a good owner to run a great bookstore.”

Katie Wengert, visiting Vroman’s from Philadelphia on a recent day, had her arms full of goodies, including a novel (“The Idiot,” by Elif Batuman), gifts for her boyfriend who is turning 40, and a birthday card for her sister-in-law.

“It’s everything you want a bookstore to be,” she said. “That doesn’t really exist anymore. ”

Residents have reason to be optimistic that someone will continue the Vroman’s tradition. The bookstore struggled mightily during the pandemic lockdown and the community rallied in response to Sheldon’s social media plea for support.

“We’ve certainly gone through world wars and depressions,” Sheldon said. “With our customer base and our hardworking employees and friends, we got through and came out the other side.”

On a recent visit, Levesque, a regular customer, ordered a book on how to recook leftovers, bought a planner (at 50 percent off) and browsed the travel and history sections.

Her three children always give her gift cards to the store, she said. They also know of her last wish.

“I’ve already told them, when I pass, cremate me, spread my ashes in Vroman’s Bookstore,” she said. “Just a little bit here and there — because that’s where I want to end up.”

New photo book explores old York County Prison and six other abandoned Pennsylvania places

paper books old

The old York County prison has sat deteriorating on Chestnut Street in York for almost half a century without finding a new purpose. Through the years, many ideas to repurpose this sturdy structure blew through the bars and broken windows, lost with decades of winter winds.

Author Susan Tatterson features the stout brick structure in a new book "Abandoned Pennsylvania, Industry and Ending."

Tatterson said that she visited the prison in 2009 during a tour of East Coast abandoned places. She captured the prison in 20 photos. A description winds the reader through the history of the property from the first prison built on the same location in 1853 to the most recent attempt by United Fiber and Data to repurpose the building into a data center.

Speaking of the 2009 experience Tatterson said, “I was photographing the outside with a friend when I heard the jangling of keys and a tall lanky Black man with a big smile waltzed up and asked us if we would like to go inside. I can't tell you how thrilled I was. He was so gracious. He let us in and made it very clear he would not go inside as he believed the prison was haunted. He came back several hours later and let us out.”

Several of the buildings documented in the book have since disappeared, creating a historical archive, marking a point while the collection was still standing in a rapidly decaying state.

I have documented the interior of the prison several times since I began my York Daily Record journalism career in 1984. At that time, the prison had only ceased to be a prison for about five years and was in better shape.

Since then, I have been in to take “before” photos numerous times as dreamers drew up plans to reshape the destiny of this corner of York city. The most interesting idea, early on, was for a restaurant. I can’t remember how the location of the former gallows might have fit into an entertainment venue.

My most recent tour in 2018 was before it was to be renovated into a data center for United Fiber and Data.

Photos from that tour are included in the gallery at the top of this story.

According to historians who traveled throughout North Idaho at the turn of the twentieth century to interpret the early histories and future viability of the region’s towns, Moscow was a community where the early “pioneers got it right.” In 1903, visiting historians observed a thriving town in the center of a rich agricultural valley, where commercial development significantly outpaced resident population growth. They noted that, here, in contrast to other pioneer settlements, railroad companies accepted early settlers’ geographic choice for the town center rather than forcing the town to move the commercial districts to accommodate railroad interests. Downtown Moscow has persisted as the symbolic heart of the community and center of public life. Its late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century buildings have adapted to changing needs over time and currently serve entertainment and housing needs of a university city.

Multiple conditions favored early Moscow’s capacity to achieve stability and prosperity as a business center during its formative years. The region’s geography was naturally accommodating of human habitation. For hundreds of years “Tatkinmah,” the “valley of the spotted deer” in which Moscow is located, served as a seasonal meeting grounds for tribal peoples including the Nez Perce, Coeur d’Alene, and Palouse, who frequented the area to harvest camas roots, trade, and race horses. Early settlers benefitted from ease of access to the region afforded by the Nez Perce Trail, which climbed two thousand feet from the tribe’s winter home in the Snake River Valley. In 1871, the first wave of homesteaders ascended the trail and claimed land in what they called “Paradise Valley,” a landscape of rich soil, bucolic grassy hills, and gently flowing streams. As farm families in pursuit of a permanent home, they brought early stability to the area and a need for a commercial marketplace. Moscow’s formative years also benefitted from the foresight and generosity of four homesteaders and businessmen (Almon Lieuallen, James Deakin, Henry McGregor, and John Russell), who each donated 30 acres of their intersecting claims to establish the initial townsite and commercial center. From the start, they established a climate for community stability by cultivating commercial enterprises along Main Street. Their motivations differed from those of fortunes seekers throughout the west, who temporarily populated, and exploited, early western settlements and then moved on.

Given its central location within a highly productive agricultural landscape, downtown Moscow quickly expanded from its humble beginnings into a booming regional marketplace for outlying communities and farmsteads. In 1885, the railroad arrived downtown, assuring Moscow’s role as a regional shipping point. Equally vital to the commercial district’s economic well-being, was the territorial legislature’s 1888 decision to locate the University of Idaho in Moscow. The combined economic stimuli afforded by agriculture, railroad linkage, and education produced downtown Moscow’s most significant period of commercial development. All downtown buildings constructed between 1888 and 1893 were either retail establishments or banks; over one-third of buildings designated as “contributing” to Moscow’s National Historic Downtown District were built in this period. Their developers, which included William McConnell, Robert H. Barton, and Michael Shields, were among Moscow’s most influential local businessmen. In architectural stature and purpose, these buildings remain unsurpassed by later periods of downtown development.

In 1891, William McConnell and his partner, James McGuire, erected the McConnell-McGuire Building, a three-story department store on the southeast corner of First and Main Streets. The physical heart of downtown during this period, however, developed at the intersection of Fourth and Main Streets, where a prominent commercial building was constructed at each corner between 1889 and 1891. All of the structures were built of brick, as required by an 1891 city ordinance regulating fire safety. The 1891 Skattaboe Block, originally constructed on the southwest corner of the intersection in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, was modified at the street level in the 1980s. The Hotel Moscow, a replacement building following a catastrophic fire in 1890, was also designed in the Richardsonian Romanesque style. Across the street on the northeast corner, Leonidas McCartor erected two mixed-use buildings in the Romanesque Revival style in 1891 and 1896, respectively. The 1891 building initially served as Farmer’s Bank before becoming Moscow’s City Hall in 1900, and it served in that capacity until the mid-twentieth century. Use of the Italianate style for downtown buildings was also relatively common as in the Shields Building on the intersection’s southeast corner. Michael Shields developed the Shields Building North as Moscow’s first three-story brick building with an elevator in 1889. The building has since lost some of its original ornamentation and has been modified at the street level.

Mirroring national economic trends, downtown development and construction activity paused during the economic panic of 1893. The national recession led to a slowdown in new construction and the upper floors of several department stores were converted from retail space to offices and apartments between 1893 and 1900. Main Street’s growth resumed in tandem with the country’s economic recovery. Twenty percent of the downtown district’s current inventory of buildings was built between 1900 and World War I. The majority are one- and two-part, block-style commercial buildings. They are smaller in scale and simpler in their detailing than buildings associated with downtown’s peak period. The Kenworthy Theater, a vaudeville and motion picture venue, is a notable exception. Between World War I and World War II, downtown continued to infill with brick and concrete block buildings designed in period-appropriate Art Deco and Spanish Mission styles. Both downtown movie theaters exhibit Art Deco influences and remain popular destinations for cultural entertainment and community events.

Typical of downtowns throughout the country during the post–World War II period, retail businesses and buildings along Moscow’s Main Street suffered from the erosive effects of highway traffic and shopping mall construction. A downtown revitalization initiative in 1980, featuring highway rerouting, streetscape improvements, and construction of a public plaza at the downtown’s core intersection at 4th and Main, helped to re-establish Main Street as a center for public life. The historic integrity of even the most prominent downtown buildings has been compromised, and many bear the marks of storefront modifications intended to forestall retail decline. Collectively, however, they provide a palimpsest of inherited culture and visitors to Moscow’s Main Street need only look up from street level at the brick buildings to connect with late-nineteenth-century community builders who had envisioned downtown Moscow as a bustling regional marketplace.

CBSE Class 12 Board Exams 2024 start with English paper today; here are tips to score high marks

Whatsapp

CBSE Class 12 Board Exams 2024 begin tomorrow with the English paper. Tips for scoring well include focusing on comprehension, vocabulary, sentence structure, literary devices, and practising sample papers to manage time effectively.

If students are prepared well and have the correct focus for the English exam, they can score well in this paper (Pixabay)

CBSE Class 12 Board Exam 2024: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) class 12 exams are scheduled to begin tomorrow, February 22, with the English paper.

English is the common subject for all streams, be it science, commerce or humanities. The subject is considered to be among the highest-scoring exams and has the potential to improve the overall Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) significantly.

If students are prepared well and have the correct focus for the English exam, they can score a good grade on this paper.

Here are a few last-minute tips for tomorrow's English board exam 2024 to help students score their best.

Know your vocabulary

The first, 20 marks section of the CBSE English exam is typically based on comprehension, vocabulary, and inference. You can't mug up the entire dictionary a night before the exam, therefore, it is best to stick with your NCERT book. Read your chapters and try to remember some jargon to help you frame your answers.

Ensure that you are not stuck on a passage for too long. Managing time is the key to any board exam.

Revise grammar thoroughly

Structuring the sentences properly is essential in an English exam . Be it the comprehension part or literature, wrong sentence structures can bring your score down.

Reinforce the following five patterns to construct your sentence and create an understanding of these:

  • Subject–Verb
  • Subject–Verb–Object
  • Subject–Verb–Adjective
  • Subject–Verb–Adverb
  • Subject–Verb–Noun

Brush up your literary devices like metaphors, similes, irony, and formats for different styles of writing as mentioned in your syllabus. This will help you cover the 30-mark writing section.

Avoid rote memorization

For the 30-mark literature section, it is important to read your lessons thoroughly. Focus on the plot, character sketches, and the central themes for each chapter. The section will analyse your skills and knowledge of the subject matter. Rote learning will not help you score in an English exam.

Long questions often require more detailed responses, and hence, you should begin with them.

Solve sample papers

To get a better understanding of what you'll be faced with tomorrow in the English exam, it is best to try out a few sample papers. It will not only help you to manage your time well but will also help you practice your subject from the exam point of view.

'Today' Star Savannah Guthrie Gets Personal About Faith in Her New Book, 'Mostly What God Does'

The TV host goes deep about religion, family and stepping out of her comfort zone.

savannah guthrie and family

We've been independently researching and testing products for over 120 years. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission. Learn more about our review process.

She's most well-known for co-hosting the Today show, but she's also the author of two children's books — one of which is being turned into a Netflix series . If that wasn't enough, the mom-of-two just published another title, this time going even deeper with fans as she discusses her faith and how it influences her everyday life.

In Mostly What God Does: Reflections on Seeking and Finding His Love Everywhere , Savannah uses a collection of personal essays to offer up a "spiritual manual" for readers to help guide them when they are feeling alone, frustrated or in need of some direction — regardless of where they are on their journey. From sharing anecdotes about her childhood to depicting vulnerable moments she has had as an adult, Savannah opens up about how during some of the hardest times in her life, she leaned on her faith to help her through.

But it's not just about leaning in when things are rough, she also wants to let her followers know how even in the quieter moments of life, there's always a place for faith.

Good Housekeeping had the opportunity to speak with Savannah about Mostly What God Does , where she discussed the personal nature of the project, motherhood and the hopes she has for readers as they delve into the book.

On writing a much more personal book after having coauthored two children's books:

It's exciting, terrifying and exhilarating. It's the most vulnerable thing I have ever done. But faith is at the core or what drives me and animates me and interests me. I'm nervous about it because it is really personal. When you write something like this, you hope that what you're writing is coming across in the way you hope it would, and that people will be touched by it. Plus, there's a lot about growing up and my life.

On the challenges of writing about faith and religion:

My first thought was, What business do I have writing about these topics ? I didn't go to seminary. I'm not a theologian. But what I am is a fellow traveler. I'm just another person trying to walk this journey, and that's the perspective I bring. It's like I say at the beginning of the book. Let's hold hands and do this together.

Mostly What God Does

Mostly What God Does

My second thought was, How can I write a book about faith and not ask some of the hardest questions that are out there? Like, why does suffering exist? Why is there injustice? Why do we live in a world that's full of sadness and pain? Those were the hardest chapters to write. And spoiler alert, there's no answer! I did not answer the greatest and most daunting questions of the universe! But I felt it was important to talk through how we deal with spirituality in our community.

At the same time, it's not a book to try to persuade or proselytize. It's a book about a connection to God that obviously comes from a Christian point of view. That is my faith. But I hope that it's just sharing some aspects of spirituality that are universal and appealing to people of all kinds of faith, or even no faith at all.

savannah guthrie with her husband and children

On how Savannah's faith relates to her parenting and influences her as a mother:

Everything flows through my faith. I'm not saying that makes me a pious and perfect person. It doesn't. And it's not like, "Oh, please, God, make them eat their broccoli more." What it means is, it's God I lean on when I have a problem at work or when I'm home with my kids, or for whatever it is. That's my core, my foundation, my comfort.

My sister, Annie , has the best line in the book when describing our family growing up. She said, "God was the sixth member of our family." So I'm trying to carry that on, you know, in my own family and in my own life.

Parenthood is such a profound spiritual experience. To me, it is the closest we could ever come to understanding the unconditional love God feels toward us. As parents, we love our kids and enjoy them and are crushed by their disappointments. When they do wrong, we don't change how we feel about them. And the same can be said for God's relationship with us.

On having her Today co-star Hoda Kotb by her side while writing the book:

Hoda’s the greatest cheerleader to have on your side. She’s been such an encourager since I even mentioned that I might do it. She’s like, "Oh, you’re doing it. You have to do it." She’s read quite a bit of it.

In the moments when I was wavering, "Oh, why am I doing this? It’s stupid," she just always told me, "No, you have to do this. You’re doing this. You’re going to do this."

It’s such a lucky situation, because you work with someone and to love them so much — we really have each other’s backs. I mean, that’s such a joy, especially when you’re getting up in the middle of the night to work. We’re so similar in so many ways. We became moms late in life, you know? Now, we’re doing these crazy hours.

On what Savannah hopes her fans take away from reading the book:

I just hope that for them, they feel connected to God. That’s really all I want to do. It’s uncomfortable to tell some of these personal stories … it’s not where I choose to be. But for me, it’s all in service of trying to put context to this walk with God. And that doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It happens in real life.

The least I can do is try to share how I experienced it, hoping that [the book] resonates for other people’s lives. It’s less about what they learned about me. It’s more just about how they connect and what they realize about themselves. And most importantly, what they realize about God and their connection and the possibility of a relationship with God.

On the lessons Savannah learned while writing the book:

I've always told people that if they want something interesting to happen, they have to step out of their comfort zone, and that's what I did with this book. The theme of the book is "Mostly what God does is love you," and I tried to look at my life, especially when things didn't go perfectly, with that perspective. You don't arrive at a destination. The path is the destination.

Mostly What God Does is on sale now.
